Happy Fall! What a beautiful time of year in Cypress. The weather is starting to cool down, and our sunrises and sunsets are enchanting. The trees and flowers are still in bloom, and early morning and evening walks dazzle our senses and support our mental and physical health. With September comes our focus on education. So this month, you will have a healthy dose of it: from school openings, homeschooling, and hosting international students to providing sponsorships abroad and scholarships to students around Cypress. Check out our story about Basham's Little Free Library at OnSite Certification in Waller. It provides a library for the children of Waller, who lost their public library over two years ago. And, since we have a new church in the neighborhood, we thought you would like to learn about the new pastor and his family. Please remember to be on the lookout for all the amazing acts of kindness and generosity you find around the community and send me your tips or, better yet, your stories regarding them. It is good practice to recognize the admirable qualities of others. And, it makes my day to hear about them from readers. So as they used to say back in the day, "Keep those cards and letters coming in!" You can reach me at jackiedevine@peelinc.com.

Cypress Texas is not only a mecca for growth and expansion; it is a business-friendly haven for the entrepreneurial spirit! One of our newest enterprising femme d'affaires is Kim Gillihan, the owner and operator of Spavia, located in Fairfield Town Center at Suite A11. Like most 21st-Century businesswomen, Kim, a long-time Fairfield resident and former medical diagnostic sales executive, conducted years of soul searching and months of primary and secondary research before arriving where she is today. Mark Twain's explanation of entrepreneurship was one of Kim’s driving forces, "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Kim explained, "That is precisely what I did. I dreamed, explored, and discovered. My dream was to own my own business, have fun, and help other people. I started thinking about what I wanted to do for the rest of my career. At that time, Cypress was expanding, and opportunities for business start-ups were snowballing in Fairfield Town Center. I started investigating and asking questions about what was missing, what would my friends like, what does the community need, and most importantly, what would I like to do?” She continued, “The idea of a day spa came to mind. But, not just any spa, a TRUE Day Spa. Mine wouldn't be just a place to go in and get a massage and facial; I wanted my guests to have a real and transformational experience. I looked at scores of options and found Spavia! It was the perfect concept for what I was seeking and I intuitively felt that Cypress would welcome this business." Spavia turned out to be the answer to Kim’s dreams. It's a true day spa—providing a full range of services for health management and body relaxation, including massages, body wraps, facials, waxing and a quiet retreat room—where one can leave the world behind and simply relax, recenter and renew. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

The decision to open Spavia in Fairfield Town Center is evidence of Kim's business savvy and understanding of the current market. Significant growth in the wellness industry, increasing health consciousness, rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, hectic schedules, and the desire to relax in a comfortable ambiance are driving the demand for therapeutic spas aimed at reducing anxiety and stress. According to Market Research.com, "What's driving this trend is today's state of unprecedented stress: being connected 24/7, the lack of boundaries between work and life, and the fact that by 2030, 80% of the human population will live in urban, nature-deprived areas." Spavia's goal is to deliver effective and regenerative spa treatments focused on providing personalized therapies or services. Kim encourages customers to identify specific skincare concerns or parts of the body that they want to focus on in the treatment, which will enable her team to recommend specific kinds of treatments like calming, wellness, balancing, or reenergizing the body." Spavia is at the forefront of the holistic and wellness movement in line with the latest pioneering treatments and research into nutrition, mindfulness, and wellbeing. They offer individualized, tailored treatments and exceptional amenities such as plush robes, spa sandals, showers, lockers, and a wonderfully relaxing retreat room to enjoy before and after one's treatment. Spavia supports you in doing more of what makes you happy by offering an alternative or complement to your leisure activities, including Spalebrations created to celebrate one-of-akind special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and showers. Plus, you will find a variety of treatments for men and couples! Kim says, "Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself is just call it a day and go get a massage. And if you decide to take my advice, I hope you check out Spavia. To your delight, you'll find, we are much more than a spa; we are a life-changing experience.” For more information, visit https://spaviadayspa. com/tx-fairfield/ or contact Kim at 832.769.0077.

Meet Joe Ogletree. He is our community's newest minister and the pastor of Image Church, located at 20402 Chappell Knoll Drive in Fairfield. You may know about Image Church, or possibly you have already attended one of its services. However, if not, I'm sure you will be interested in Pastor Ogletree's story about why he and his family have chosen to settle in Fairfield. Leading a church wasn't in my original plans. After graduating on a full football scholarship from Nicholls State University, and as an all-conference football player, I had big dreams of playing in the NFL. However after walking across the stage and collecting my diploma, I realized God had something different than the NFL planned for me. Instead, my future included a career in corporate America and then later I was called to the ministry. It pays to travel with the Traveling Seniors of Cypress ( TSoC). Sometimes you even come out a winner—like Linda Oates who won $11,304 at the Astros game in July! Enjoying an Astros game together has its rewards, but there are many more reasons than winning a pot of money to join the group. Travel By Jo Ann Lambert leaders, Jackie Devine and me, are constantly finding new places to explore, things to learn about and fascinating people to meet. Seniors (age 50 and above) relax knowing when taking short day trips or venturing out on extended excursions they won’t have any trouble making friends and getting around. Also , you won’t worry about getting lost on our trips. Plus, seniors are often relieved to find they don’t have to make plans or decisions on their own. Moreover, when traveling long distances, they’ve discovered that they rarely have to pull out their wallet to pay for hotels, meals, and tips or worry about local gratuity customs. The best benefit of traveling with TSoC is we share different interests which encourages us to expand our horizons, think outside the box, and try new things. And when members join us we typically bond very quickly because we are such a friendly bunch. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

While working in corporate America, I found myself still searching and searching for more. More connection, more family, more community. The divorce rate is increasing, making broken homes seem like the norm. The confusion that lives in a broken home can permeate through children, and then they get married, only to wind up divorced like their parents, and so begins another cycle. How do we break this cycle? God has a design for the family. We need to get back to His design and equip families with hope. As the son of a preacher, I had this deep down feeling that my calling was in ministry. This hunch was confirmed in 2008, when God called me to minister the gospel under the leadership of my father, Dr. John Ogletree, at First Metropolitan Church as a Young Adult Pastor and an Elder. I've served in the CityView Collective Planting Residency, a group of gospel-centered churches working to plant churches in the Houston area, and I am excited to see how God has ordered my steps in the years to come. We've been here since 2017, and today, I'm humbled and honored to be a part of the Cypress community bringing families together and bringing communities together. Today, I still work in corporate America, but I'm excited to have started my seminary degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. When I'm not connecting our patrons to the Source to find their joy and peace, you'll probably find me watching a football game, spending time with my wife, Sherrell, or playing with our three handsome boys– Jaiden, Josiah, and Jaxon. Image Church had its grand opening on September 12th at 3 pm. Regular service times will be 10 am every Sunday.

By Kim Maxian The Fairfield Women’s Club would like to thank the Fairfield community for your support over the last year, despite working around Covid. The two Garage Sales were a great success for both FWC and the neighbors who sold their goods. Also, the Holiday Market was fun, and the vendors who participated said that they did very well. The Parade and Fourth@Fairfield were also a huge success, with over 1,000 people in attendance at the parade and the event at Keith. All of your participation in these events makes it possible to raise money to put right back into the community. We made almost $10,000 this year that we can now award to our charities. Ault, Keith, Swenke Elementary, Salyards Middle School, Bridgeland High School, and our Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from your community involvement. We also support the Constables throughout the year. We will invite representatives to the September meeting to award the checks. Save the date for the Fall Garage Sale, October 2nd. Go to www. fairfieldwomensclub.org to register. Save the Date of December 4th for our first ever Christmas Market and Parade. More details to follow. Our next meeting will be on September 21st at Bradford Creek Clubhouse at 7:00 pm. Fairfield Community Gazette - September 2021

By Lily Wachuku My name is Lily Wachuku, and I am a 16-year-old senior at Cypress Ranch High School and a Cypress resident. I created "Live Life the Girl Way," a web-based girls' organization that focuses on empowering young girls and teens. My organization is over two years old and is frequently accessed by over 130 countries, with some of my posts averaging over 6,000 hits. My organization focuses on positive and uplifting messages for young girls and teens to encourage them to reach their full potential. I am also a motivational speaker, because when I started middle school, I noticed that many girls around me lacked self-confidence and didn't believe in themselves. The majority of the girls throughout middle school and high school weren't empowered or encouraged. They believed the stereotypes that society has set for girls and women today; many didn't seem to think there was a place for them outside of "girl careers." I have been lucky enough to have people around me every day who empower and encourage me to be my best self and achieve all of my goals and dreams. This year, we have launched the campaign, "Fuel Her Dreams," to raise money to educate girls in Malawi, Africa. Our mission is to fund 20 girls with one year of education to help combat child marriage. "Live Life the Girl Way" is working with UNICEF USA to reach a goal of raising $3540. I am asking for the support of the Cypress community to help me "Fuel Her Dreams." The fundraiser link is https://charity. gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/fuel-her-dreams1. The deadline for donations is September 30, 2021. Live Life the Girl Way is not a feminist organization. It is dedicated to encouraging girls globally to achieve all of their goals and dreams, eradicate their insecurities, and take their place in the world. If I empower and inspire girls to Dream, Succeed, and Achieve, I can change the world for the better. "Live Life the Girl Way" can be accessed at www.livelifethegirlway. com.

Submitted by Pat Hudson Because we value the health and well-being of our sponsors, volunteers, and friends, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our Cy-Fair Helping Hands’ 1st Annual Stetsons & Stilettos Gala. The new date for our fundraiser is Saturday, February 19, 2022; the venue will remain Bridal Oaks Weddings and Events, 18224 K-Z Road, Cypress, 77433. While this decision saddens us, we are confident that it is the right thing to do. All current sponsorships, donations, and ticket purchases will be recognized and honored on the new date. We will continue to seek out enticing food and beverage selections and additional auction items that are sure to draw some bidding wars! Watch our website and social media for updates in the silent and live auctions. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you at our Stetsons & Stilettos Gala on Saturday, February 19, 2022.

Re aders Become Le aders By Jenny Basham After learning that the public library in Waller, where our business is located, has been closed for over 2 years, my husband and I decided to install the Little Free Library I received from a retired steward in the Waller community. Reading is exciting and is an important element to an educational foundation, so I wanted to give the gift of reading to kids and adults in our community and do it for FREE with absolutely no strings attached. After my husband got the little library installed for me, I took to social media and asked for donations from the Fairfield community and the response has been overwhelming! My dear friend, Kim Berryman, has been the biggest help by driving all over Cypress picking up boxes and boxes and boxes of books. Donations were coming in faster than I could keep up with and the Little Free Library stationed outside very quickly needed an expansion. My husband built shelves inside our business and I eventually got the books somewhat organized. But the books weren’t going out the door. Word of the little library had not gotten out into the Waller community despite my attempts on social media. So, to get books out the door and in the hands of readers rather than just have them sit on the shelf, I took to social media again in mid-July but this time it was to ask for specific book requests from readers. So, I took orders, lots of orders! A few people came to the library in Waller to get their books, I personally delivered books to the porch of some but most picked up their books from my front porch in Fairfield, and some even left donations as they picked up their books. I was able to provide a couple of new teachers with a box of books to start their classroom library, give many parents new titles for their avid readers, as well as fill the shelf of a low income apartment lending library started by the college age daughter of a fellow Fairfield neighbor. It was a great experience, a bit overwhelming at first because there were so many requests, but I got through them all and it was well worth it. A lot of books hit the hands of readers in July! Right now the library is manned by me with the help of my husband when needed. How can the community help? There are two big things that would help right now. We need more books in Spanish. We have a very small selection in Spanish, maybe 10 children’s books. So we could use more books in Spanish for children, teens and adults. We need help getting the word out to the Waller community. I contacted the school district at the end of May but will need to utilize their electronic flier notification system which will require a payment per flier distributed, which we probably will still do but we still need more communication sent out to the community. We are accepting donations, especially if the alternative is for the donor to take the books to a donation center that will turn around and sell them. We want to prevent the reselling of books and keep them free for the community. The Little Free Library is located at 2930 Washington Street in Waller and is open 24/7. The Little Free Library is located at On-Site Certification, 2930 Washington Street in Waller. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

My slogan is “you point I plant.” Others services I provide include weeding, planting, plant removal and relocation, mulching, and making new flower beds. Wanna know how to make a musician cry? Tell them “Sorry, the show is cancelled” but in this case, my tears turned to excitement! When my band’s show was rescheduled, I knew exactly where I was going to spend the night instead - watching the “Matt Sebastian Band” play locally at The Barn located at 16416 Meuschke Rd. in Cypress, TX! Matt Sebastian’s local show venues include the Cypress favorites Creekwood Grill, The Barn and The Burger Ranch, just to name a few, but that’s not the extent of it. His Alternative, Bluesy, Southern Rock sound is popular amongst every age group! Matt performs as an acoustic solo artist and when we are lucky, he’s with his FULL band! (Matt Sebastian, Lead Vocals, Guitar + Byron Burnham, Lead Guitar + Gavin Gonzales, Bass + Jake Dansby, Drums) All very cool dudes I enjoyed chatting with between sets. Be sure to Follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/mattsebastianband/ to keep up with their events and happenings! Performing songs such as “Nothing Else Matters, by Metallica, “Save Tonight”, by Eagle Eye Cherry, “Wonderwall” by Oasis and “Hurricane” by Band of Heathens, you are sure to get your fix of hits! The crowd roared when Matt invited me on stage to sing the sultry Hurricane tune with him on stage! Surprise! (for me too!) It was a blast, and we made a memory that night! His wife, Kimberly, was there in major support too! With a smile on her face and her camera hung around her neck, Kim captured Matt’s highlight moments every step of the way. They welcomed me with open arms, we toasted to the special occasion then I ran straight to the Merch Table and grabbed me a shirt and a Koozie! I changed into it immediately because it was softer than the shirt I wore there! Get yours ASAP! Grab some friends and go catch you a Matt Sebastian Show – you’ll be glad you did! Bridgeland High School quarterback Conner Weigman, Cypress Park High School running back Nate Livingston and linebacker Harold Perkins, Cypress Ranch offensive lineman Bryce Simpson and Cy-Fair High School linebacker Hunter Warren were among the standout football players named to and honored as a part of the Touchdown Club of Houston 2021 UIL High School Preseason Football Team. The honorees will be recognized on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center (9401 Knight Road). Each player honored by the Touchdown Club will be presented with a plaque commemorating the distinction. Since 2013, 30 CFISD players have been named to the preseason team, which included the district having multiple selections from 2014-2017. CFISD had three honorees each in 2019 and 2020, and seven standouts selected in 2016. For a full list of honorees and other information, visit the Touchdown Club website at www.touchdownclub. org.

Cowser Selected By The Baltimore Orioles Cypress Ranch High School 2018 graduates Colton Cowser and Ty Madden were both selected on the first day of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft, which included Cowser tying the mark as the highest draft pick in CFISD history. Cowser was selected fifth overall by the Baltimore Orioles, while Madden was picked 32nd overall by the Detroit Tigers. The two gathered with family and friends on July 11 at Creekwood Grill to watch the MLB draft. “It’s an honor,” said Cowser, an outfielder at Sam Houston State University who became the highest draft pick in baseball program and Southland Conference history. “It’s awesome that the Baltimore Orioles believe in me and believe that I have the skillset to contribute to their organization eventually.” Said Madden, a right-handed pitcher for the University of Texas and the program’s highest selection since 2011: “This is amazing. I can’t thank the Tigers organization enough for giving me this opportunity. Let’s roll.” As seniors at Cypress Ranch, Cowser and Madden helped lead the Mustangs to the 2018 Class 6A state semifinals. Cowser became an instant star at Sam Houston State University and one of the most decorated players in program history. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2019 and the Southland Conference Hitter Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.

Klein Cain posted an 8-3 record last season and finished as a Division II-6A Region II area finalist. The two young programs faced each other to begin the 2020 season, with Bridgeland prevailing 49-42 at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium. The game featured more than 1,100 yards of total offense between the teams. Bridgeland senior quarterback Conner Weigman, who was recently named to the prestigious Elite 11, is among a number of top football recruits to be featured in the weekend’s games according to ESPN rankings. Weigman is verbally committed to Texas A&M University and currently ranked 36th in the ESPN 300 and second nationally among his position (Quarterback: Pocket Passer). Against Klein Cain last season, Weigman passed for 372 yards and three touchdowns to go with 149 yards rushing and three scores. of the Year. He then earned a spot on the Collegiate National Team that summer and was named MVP of the United States vs. Cuba Friendship series. In 2021, Cowser ranked in the top five in the Southland Conference in batting average (.374), runs (61), hits (76), home runs (16), RBI (52) and walks (42). He was the conference’s Player of the Year and StudentAthlete of the Year. “For this to be a reality now, it just tells a lot about how hard I’ve worked and how much my friends and family have believed in me,” said Cowser, who wasn’t drafted coming out of high school. “I’m very grateful for Sam Houston to give me the opportunity to get better and develop. I’m forever grateful for that.” Madden was selected in the 43rd round (1,022nd overall) by the Kansas City Royals in 2018 but elected to attend the University of Texas. He posted a 4-1 record as a freshman and compiled a 1.80 ERA in 25 innings as the Longhorns’ Saturday starting pitcher in 2020. As a junior, Madden struck out 137 batters, the most by a Longhorns’ pitcher since 2004. He held opponents to a .188 batting average and was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and first team AllAmerican by two organizations in helping lead the University of Texas to the College World Series. “Going to school was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Madden said. “Back then I thought I was ready, but I wasn’t. My time at Texas was the best time of my life and the way my game developed was unbelievable. I’m glad I made that decision three years ago.” Cowser and Madden surpassed their Cypress Ranch teammates in becoming the first high school teammates selected this high in the draft in nearly 20 years. I’m a COVID-era homeschool mom. This is our second year of homeschooling, and I am very excited! I hope after reading this, more families will be encouraged to start or consider homeschooling as an excellent alternative to public education. I’ve always wanted to stay home and raise my children, especially when they were little. However, I was not familiar with homeschool; therefore, it had not been something I considered. It was only after the start of COVID-19 that my husband and I began to discuss it as the next step for our family. I met more and more homeschool families through church and other local events. They were always welcoming, helpful, and encouraging. We did the online version of public school for a semester in the Spring of 2020 but realized it was not for my family. We decided that either the children should be homeschooled or return to inperson instruction. At home, we could control the environment, educate safety, and provide continuity knowing another shutdown could occur. At-home instruction, although different, would provide much-needed stability and was the best choice for us! At this writing, there is a variant of the original COVID-19 virus, called the Delta variant, surfacing. I’m not advocating responding out of fear or letting it dominate our choices. I’m suggesting we 14 Fairfield Community Gazette - September 2021

operate in wisdom and courage to do the best thing for our family. Homeschooling in this season was the wisest choice for us. In fact, we plan to continue homeschooling even if the pandemic ends! My kids are doing well mentally, emotionally, socially, and academically. If families can logistically afford to homeschool their children, I think their education can be more rewarding, fun, challenging, flexible, and exciting! You do not have to have a teaching certificate to educate your kids. You have been their first teacher since they were born, and you can continue to teach them! Here are some tips that I would give to any mom or family that is new to homeschool or has recently decided to try homeschooling, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can do this: Connect with other homeschool families. Support and connection are so important, especially now. Many of us were in quarantine for quite a while. As a result, the mental, emotional or social impact could be felt in our kids, resulting in learning challenges or behavioral changes. Those that had a prolonged period of isolation to protect against the spread of disease may have noticed their child report more feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, sad, or experiencing changes in mood due to the very sudden and sustained life changes. Balance their education and social needs while trying to be wise and cautious as well. Join homeschool groups. Connecting, even in a small way, makes a big difference! Making connections and getting involved with your local homeschool groups is very helpful. Take a deep breath! Do not get overwhelmed. There are a lot of choices, and you don’t have to rush. Stay encouraged. Ask for help. Talking to other moms about what they have tried was very helpful. Ask about what worked for their learners and what didn’t. What programs they preferred over others and why? These are a few questions more seasoned moms are happy to answer. It will give you valuable pieces of information that will help you streamline what you may want to do with your learner! Do not be afraid to outsource. There are many options available, from local Co-Ops to signing up for a teacher to help teach your child in a particular subject. Deschool: This was a term I was introduced to about two years ago to help “unlearn” some of the routines of public school, like having to start and stop at a particular time of day, having to teach for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR Test), or the notion of having to teach all of my kids the same way. As homeschoolers, we are moving forward all the time and at any time! The learning may not necessarily be from a textbook. I find those experiences are the most fun! You can explore this website for more details on deschooling. https://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/ homeschooling-101/deschooling/ I recommend checking the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and joining a local homeschool advocacy group such as: Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLA). For moms new to homeschooling in Texas, visit www.tea.texas.gov for lots of helpful information. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association is beneficial and advocates for the freedom to homeschool and offers support for families on the homeschool journey. Do not give up! No one will advocate, push for your kids, love them or want the best for them in this world more than you. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
