What a wonderful time of the year! It was a great turn out at the holiday party on December 4th. So many neighbors and friends gathered at our clubhouse to play, craft, and greet Santa! We enjoyed Christmas donuts and took lots of pictures too! Thanks to Santa for stopping by and taking wishes and hugs! Also a big thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make this event a success!

Are You Ready for a Freeze? With the potentially erratic winter weather in Houston, it may be a warm and sunny one day and freezing the next. Preparing for cold weather before it comes may save last minute scrambling and possibly costly repairs if a pipe freezes. Freeze Tips: • Drain, if possible, and insulate all external pipes and faucets – towels/ bubble wrap may work for mild freezes but pipe insulation is an inexpensive easy to install option, and usually available at any home improvement store. • Turn off your sprinkler system and drain the back-flow preventer. • Take plants inside or cover them – sheets are good for mild freezes. Drop cloths or plastic sheeting is better for severe freezes as it helps capture the ground heat and keep it around the plants. • Disconnect and drain garden hoses. • Keep pool pumps running as long as the temperature is below freezing. If there is a power loss, drain all pool equipment quickly to avoid water freezing in the pool equipment. • For extended weather below freezing and loss of power, let inside faucets drip/trickle to keep water moving. Moving water is less likely to free in pipes. • Open cabinet doors under sinks. • A hairdryer can be used to thaw frozen pipes.

As has been previously noted many pear trees within LOE have reached the end of their lifespan. There have been several instances recently where large pear limbs have fallen across sidewalks unexpectedly without warning. The HOA has removed most of these pear trees and is continuing to evaluate remaining pear trees and remove them as necessary. If you have pear trees on your property and are interested in having them removed, the HOA has contacted Pablo Sierra with All Texas Tree Services. He has offered to remove corner lot pear trees for $250/tree, including grinding the stumps & cleanup for all LOE residents. This is for pear tree removal on side yards of corner lots only. Please contact Pablo for pricing on any other tree removals. Please text or email Pablo directly before March 31 with your name, address, and number of pear trees to remove. At his discretion he may wait until he has several requests in LOE before scheduling the tree removal and may not give advance notice. When the work is complete you will receive an invoice from All Texas Tree Service. Payments should be made directly to All Texas Tree Service.

The Tree Resolution requires side yards for corner lots to have 2 medium sized trees or 3 small sized trees (a listing of suggested tree species for both medium and small trees is included in the resolution appendix). Typically, any trees removed should be promptly replaced. However, any homeowners who decide to have the pear trees removed with this offer will have up to 18 months to replace the trees.

The HOA disclaims all liability should a homeowner elect to use All Texas Tree Service to remove any trees.

Most of us chose to live in LOE because it is a safe neighborhood and each of us has a responsibility to contribute to this environment. Speeding and running stop signs may get you home seconds sooner but are those seconds worth increasing the possibility of accidently hitting a child playing or not seeing a pedestrian crossing the street? This might happen in an instant but could permanently change your and another family’s lives forever. Please, please, please, slow down and remind all drivers in your household as well as visitors and contractors to be considerate and obey the traffic rules. Your help will let everyone continue to feel safe in LOE!

Lakes on Eldridge Book Club’s next meeting is on January 24 at 7:30 PM in the clubhouse. Plenty of room, masks optional. We welcome anyone to join us! Usually the 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 PM (we sometimes move the date because of holidays, so check with celeste. fritz@gmail.com ) Don’t forget about LOE’s Little Free Library located at the bus stop in front of the clubhouse! Take a book / leave a book. January 24 – The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri Nuri is a beekeeper and Afra, his wife, is an artist. Mornings, Nuri rises early to hear the call to prayer before driving to his hives in the countryside. On weekends, Afra sells her colorful landscape paintings at the open-air market. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo—until the unthinkable happens. When all they love is destroyed by war, Nuri knows they have no choice except to leave their home. But escaping Syria will be no easy task. Afra has lost her sight, leaving Nuri to navigate her grief as well as a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece toward an uncertain future in Britain. Nuri is sustained only by the knowledge that waiting for them is his cousin Mustafa, who has started an apiary in Yorkshire and is teaching fellow refugee’s beekeeping. As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss but dangers that would overwhelm even the bravest souls.

Above all, they must make the difficult journey back to each other, a path once so familiar yet rendered foreign by the heartache of displacement. Moving, intimate, and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a book for our times: a novel that at once reminds us that the most peaceful and ordinary lives can be utterly upended in unimaginable ways and brings a journey in faraway lands close to home, never to be forgotten. When the stress of the holidays gets to you, why not curl up with a good book? Here’s our reading list for 2022; January February March April May June July August September October November December
