Board Message Happy New Year! As we say goodbye to the holidays and enter 2022, we reflect on the year past and plan for the coming year. We will have a chance to do that as a neighborhood at this year’s Annual Meeting for the membership, which will be held on Sunday, January 30, at 6PM VIA ZOOM. The HOA Board decided that even though the pandemic has been somewhat calm recently in the Austin area, with the recent surge of the new variant Omicron and uncertainty about how Omicron might impact best practices for gatherings, we will play it safe for the community and hold the Annual Meeting virtually again this year. We have several interesting speakers planned, but not yet confirmed, such as Jonathan Coon, owner of the Camelback property across Loop 360. Last year he gave a presentation about proposed parking for the “Scenic Overlook,” and this year we are hoping for an update. Also on the potential guest list is a representative from the Texas Department of Transportation for updates on the status of the intersection changes on Loop 360, especially the intersections of Courtyard Drive and Loop 360 as well as the intersection of Loop 360 and Ranch Road 2222. With the ever-present changes in the City of Austin, we also hope to have Council Member Alison Alter or her Chief of Staff Kurt CadenaMitchell give us a summary on relevant issues, such as APD, budgets, and Land Development Code status. Be sure to return your Proxy and Ballot for the Annual Meeting timely! It is very important that we receive the required number of proxies in order to meet quorum for the Annual Meeting. Voting for Board members will ONLY be conducted by ballot in advance of the meeting, so please be sure to return it timely. Neighbors, please remember that 2022 Annual Assessments are $315, due on January 1. Payments received after January 31 are considered late. Please get those payments in early. Contact Marilyn Childress our Goodwin Property Manager for any questions regarding Annual Assessments. Marilyn.Childress@goodwintx.com And finally, January is the last month to safely trim oak trees. Starting February and continuing through the end of June, the oak wilt beetle is active. If you need to trim limbs away from your roof or fence, or remove ball moss, please do that work NOW in January. Please, drive SLOWLY in the Courtyard!!!! Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.
Courtyard Book Club Tuesday, February 1, 2022
Books don’t get more classic than Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, the classic book selection for discussion at the Courtyard Book Club for its Feb. 1 meeting at 1 p.m. Often considered Hemingway’s greatest work, the 1926 novel has it all – interesting lives of British and American ex-pats in Paris, the lifestyles of the Lost Generation, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, bullfights in Spain, and the author’s unique and spare writing style. A book read by many in long-ago English literature classes, The Sun Also Rises often offers up new themes and ideas when given a second look years later. The Courtyard Book Club meets at the home of its chair, Lou Blemaster, 5612 N. Scout Island Circle, at 1 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month. To receive book club emails, contact Lou at LouBlemaster@gmail.com. Even those who haven’t read the monthly book are welcomed to join your neighbors for some interesting discussion. And if you have friends in other areas of Austin who would like to join a book club, feel free to bring them along.

Courtyard Caller Silverfish
Usually, silverfish are not seen by homeowners because they are nocturnal and are most active at night. They can commonly be found in attics, closets or near bookcases. They may also be found behind baseboards or around door and window casings. Silverfish feed on starchy foods like paper, flour, oats or glue and can eat and stain books, fabrics, food and wallpaper. Even though silverfish are capable of causing damage, they usually considered more of a nuisance than a pest. Silverfish wingless insects with flattened, elongated, carrot-shaped bodies with three long “tails” that come off the tip (or pointy end) of the abdomen. The body is covered with fine scales that give them a silver sheen. Immatures look just like the adults but are smaller in size. Tips for managing silverfish: • Remove old books, papers & magazines • Store items in sealed, plastic bags or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids • Clean closets on a regular basis- vacuum and/or sweep floors and wipe down any shelves • Reduce humidity with fans, air conditioning, or dehumidifiers • Repair any water leaks • Inspect all items before bringing them into the house Target treatments to where silverfish live- wall voids, closets, attics, behind baseboards, etc.
Fire Safety Committee
Happy New Year and Congratulations Courtyard Homeowners, the Community enters 2022 with yet another year’s recognition as a Firewise USA Community in good standing. Because we live in the Wildland Urban Interface, wildfire can still occur in our immediate surroundings. Participation in Firewise USA provides us with up-to-date information for homeowners and the community to help meet this challenge. Our membership in the Firewise Alliance commits us to a program of wildfire mitigation that is doable and cost-effective. The program gives priority to educating homeowners about home ignition risk mitigation they can do on their own. And as a community, the Courtyard Board and Committees continue to reduce wildfire fuel in our common areas. When residents take advantage of education and participate in events that increase their understanding we can help our neighbors and ourselves because we are a significant factor in reducing wildfire risks. Although wildland fire seems remote this time of year, at least in our portion of Texas, the recommendations and resources associated with wildfire protection, such as, evacuation plans, might still be For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie relevant. If we experience a first quarter weather emergency as in Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at February 2021, the preparations and checklists might be of some help in case of a temporary relocation. Moving without things we 512.854.9600. rely on, such as, clothing, medicine, together with younger and older family members and pets can be disruptive, but being prepared may be one less thing to worry about. The Red Cross Red, Set, Go website, https://www.ready.gov/ kit provides guidelines and recommendations for assembling a basic pack of essential items to avoid last minute rushing around and forgetting necessities. Registering for notifications at https:// warncentraltexas.org can provide a heads-up if and when emergencies occur. Individuals with mobility or disability issues or other issues that make notification or evacuation a challenge, whether family, friends or neighbors should register at https://tdem.texas.gov/stear/. Although registering does not guarantee that specific services will be available in an emergency, it is another emergency management resource. Now, if Mother Nature cooperates, maybe we’ll have a Goldilocks winter and spring, not to cold and not to hot…just right. Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.
