Local Spotlight HIVE AND HONEY
Meet Summer Rose and Chrissy Ivie, co-owners of Hive + Honey, a fitness boutique offering Pilates and group fitness. Located in the Highland Park West shopping center on Hancock Drive, H+H opened in April 2021. Hive + Honey has something for everyone. A great place to shop for gifts, enjoy an infrared sauna, take a Pilates or group fitness class. The shop contains many womenowned, local products such as Her New Tribe, Deux Moons candles and Folk Botanicals. Summer lives in Rosedale and her two daughters attend Highland Park Elementary. Having spent lots of time at Crenshaw’s and the surrounding areas, she would check in from time to time to see if space was available at Highland Park West. When she learned about an availability, she recruited her dear friend Chrissy to join her in this venture. They both love being in the neighborhood and enjoy that it has been a gathering place for several surrounding neighborhoods. It is what they hoped would happen when they opened! Summer and Chrissy went into creating their business with wide eyed optimism and a flexible mindset. With the Covid pandemic, many businesses were having to to reinvent themselves. Since they were starting during that time, they didn’t feel like they had to follow any formula. It allowed them to grow organically and see what made sense for them and the community they are serving. Navigating the different mask policies was a challenge. It was confusing for everyone and pleasing everyone was impossible. At H+H, clients are everything. They help create the positive energy Summer and Chrissy have strived for. A high moment is always when a client shares that they feel welcome and comfortable in the studio. That is always their number one goal. H+H wants people to know the studio is a warm and inviting environment and hope people feel comfortable trying new things as a result. H+H instructors are thoughtful and creative. Clients are encouraged to try different instructors and times until they find what works for them. Hive + Honey offers a discount to teachers and nurses in hopes that those that work nearby will be able to participate in a class before or after work. Enjoy 20% off any class booking with the discount code HPWBANA. You can book at www.hiveandhoneyatx.com. The Highland Park West Balcones Area Neighborhood Association News - April 2022

LETTUCE RECYCLE by Dena Houston
PLEASE, NO PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING CART Every recycling day, we see this in our neighborhood the blue curbside cart with the lid half open with one or more plastic bags, stuffed with trash or recyclables, perched on top. There are no recycling police in Austin, so the carts are still emptied into the recycling truck and taken back to the recycling facility.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE BAGS? The workers at the recycling facility do not have time to open and sort most of the plastic bags due to time and safety issues. All unopened plastic bags go to the landfill. As a result, 15% of what comes into the recycling facility goes to the landfill. The City pays a processing fee to the recycling facility to cover the additional cost of hauling these plastic bags and other items that contaminate the recycling process to the landfill. THE RECYCLING HISTORY OF BEER AND BEVERAGE CAN TABS
A “Lettuce Recycle” reader was wondering when the industry began using the “StaTab” can opening where the pull tab stays on the can. Here is what I learned. The first beer and soda cans had a flat top and needed a tool we all called a “church key” to open it. In 1963, a “pull tab” beer can was invented. It was great because no tool was needed to open the can, but there were some drawbacks. It was easy to cut your finger on it and discarding these metal rings polluted the forests and beaches. The first ones were known as “finger rippers”. In the song “Margaritaville”, Jimmy Buffett sings “I blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop top, cut my heel and had to cruise on back home”.
HPWBANA March Meeting Monday, April 25th, 6:30 p.m.
Open to the public Location: TBD Meet the HPWBANA Board and your neighbors @HPWBANA on Facebook or Instagram for updates
In 1975, Reynolds Metals Co. patented the “StaTab”. This is what we see today on beer, beverage, and other aluminum cans.
WHAT IS A CHURCH KEY AND HOW DID IT GET ITS NAME?
Centuries ago, many of the best brewers were monks. To protect their aging beers in their monasteries, the monks locked their brew away in lager cellars, for which only the monks had the keys. It is theorized that the modern openers reminded someone of these keys and started calling them “church keys”.
NEW RATES FOR EXTRA TRASH STICKERS
On October 1, 2021, the rate for “extra trash” stickers increased to $5.00 + tax. If you have old stickers on hand, they are like the post office “Forever Stamps” and will always be valid. “Extra trash” bags without the sticker are billed to City utility customers at $10.20 + tax per extra bag. Here is a very informative City of Austin recycling website that offers help in finding out how to recycle specific items: www.austintexas. gov/what-do-i-do. Stay tuned for future tips that will include creative ways to recycle or reuse. If you have any questions or recycling ideas, please send them to me at this address: recycling@hpwbana.org.

FUN FACTS ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD By Dena Houston
Years ago, I was curious about the history of our house on Big Bend Drive (built in 1949) and the surrounding neighborhood. I went to the Dolph Briscoe Research Center on the UT campus and to the Travis County records department to do some research. Here a few fun facts that I learned: •
Our house on Big Bend Drive was built by Barnes Hoff and was purchased in 1949 by Lester Palmer (former mayor of Austin) for $2200.
•
Huff Baines, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s first (and favorite) cousin lived on Perry Lane.
•
Most of this neighborhood was originally part of a dairy farm, owned by whoever lived in the old farm house on Bull Creek. There is an old watering trough in the back yard of a Big Bend neighbor that is from the dairy farm days.
•
Most of the limestone used in the original houses in this neighborhood was excavated from the quarry behind Highland Park School.
•
Upcoming editions of the newsletter will feature a series on the history of the Highland Park neighborhood by Trey McWhorter.
