Little Free Library Take a Book. Share a Book. Our Little Free Library is a year old! Last May Spring Trails introduced a very special amenity for residents…3 Little Free Libraries. These community libraries were a gracious gift from one of our young residents Ashley Reel. At the time Ashley was about to graduate from Oak Ridge High School and wanted to bring her family’s love of books and reading to our beautiful community. Located at Heron Park, in front of the pool house, are our 3 new Little Free Lending Libraries: one for Kids, one for Teens, and one for Adults. The idea behind the libraries is simple…take a book or share a book. Lending libraries function on the honor system. You do not need to share a book to take one. If you take a book from a little library, try to bring one to share when you can. The mission of the Little Free Library program is to inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges. And our libraries do just that. Just another example of the many special opportunities available to Spring Trails residents.

Community Shred Event Contributed by MUD 94 A big thank you to Republic Services for sponsoring our annual Spring Trails Shredding Event in Montgomery County MUD 94. It was an amazing success. We had 112 cars (and one bicycle) drop off shreddable paper products. Barbara Nussa, our Republic Sales Manager, made all the arrangements and with her employees, Derold Lewis and Roberto Lara, kept things moving smoothly. Leanne Kessler and representatives with the Spring Trails Community Association helped with setting up at the new location at Cardinal Park. Thank you to all who participated. Daily lifeguard services will begin June 1st through August 14th. Lifeguards will be onsite 10:00am-8:00pm daily, Tuesday-Sunday. The pool will be closed Monday for cleaning and maintenance. Standard operating pool hours will continue to be 6:00am-8:00pm. Registered residents are free to use the pool during standard operating hours. Very important: • Use of the pool when lifeguards are not present is considered "swim-at-your-own risk". • Access cards and 2022 wristbands are required to access and use the pool. • Use of the pool outside standard operating hours is prohibited. Registered residents who facilitate pool access of non-residents or un-registered residents assume responsibility for the actions of those allowed in the facility. Propping the gate open allowing public access to the community pool is prohibited and subject to loss of amenity privileges.
Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied and supervised, at all times, by an individual 18 years of age or older. A complete list of pool rules is posted at the pool and available on the Spring Trails website, Amenities page. If you were unable to register and obtain the required access card activation and wristbands, contact Inframark at 281-870-0585 for options.

Kindness is Contagious Pass it On RAK (random act of kindness): SMILE!
Have you ever heard laughter is contagious? Well so is a smile. Be mindful to look up when you’re walking around or running errands and show off that beautiful smile. RAK Bonus: Introduce yourself to someone you see frequently but haven’t yet met. You know who they are. Those folks you see every time you go for a walk. The young man at the car wash who scrubs those bugs off the front of your car. How about the local police officer you pass every day on your way home. Next time you cross their path, stop, introduce yourself and wish them a wonderful day.

How Does Your Garden Grow? Contributed by Roger Olsen
It’s officially “summer”. So what, in your garden or lawn, should you start watching or planning for? First, watch your lawn for OVER watering. Remember: You only need to give your St. Augustine lawn a total of 1 inch of water per week provided in consecutive waterings that allow the water to go deep and not run off into the storm sewer. That means, water until it starts to run off then give it an hour and do a second cycle. Modern irrigation systems do this automatically but if you don’t have one, you can still monitor visually. If you want to know more on how to water effectively, go to the Texas A&M Agrilife website and search on “lawn irrigation”. Second, you should have fertilized your lawn by now. Most bagged fertilizer will tell you to fertilize a max of 2 times per year. If not, READ the application instructions on your fertilizer bag! Don’t have the bag? It’s online, of course. Third, if you are using Sevin or other insect killer in your garden, MEMORIZE the instructions on how, when, and how much to use. Some of the most destructive insects are now showing up, or soon will be and will destroy many hollow vine plants, like squashes, in a day. Also, don’t discount the more nature friendly products such as insect “soap” or products that contain the bacteria thuringiensis such as Thuricide and other brands. They require more frequent use but aren’t near as residual as chemical pesticides. Fourth, you should be able to tell by now whether your palm trees (various varieties) are going to come back to life if they were stunned by cold weather. Before you decide to saw them down, think more safely and contact an arborist. Palm trees, even though they look dead, may just be slow. Sawing them down can be dangerous as the sections are extremely heavy and can kill or severely injure the selfhelp person. Watch the center top for a green spear that indicates the plant is still alive. Fifth, remember there are TWO vegetable growing seasons here in the Houston area if you have missed the traditional first one. Once again, you can go to the A&M Agrilife or Montgomery County Master Gardeners websites (to name just 2) and learn about late summer / fall gardening. Last, give yourself some room to make a mistake or two in your gardening. The best gardeners are those who have made the usual “newbie” mistakes but keep reading and learning more. Join the Spring Trails Beautification Committee, come to Saturday in the Garden (Meditation garden first Saturday of the month April thru November), become a fan of the Montgomery County Master Gardeners website, or visit some YouTube videos and learn from the “wise ones” who have “been there and done that”. KEY: Work with a good local nursery like Arbor Gate, Nature’s Way or Plants for All Seasons (to name just a few), to help you learn what to do and get suggestions for your garden. They want to help you select good plants and nurture them correctly. That’s it for this month so, as a dear friend always says to me, “Happy gardening!”
