"There's a million things I haven't done, just you wait." Submitted by Dennis Ulanday, Jake’s dad

– from Hamilton

Jake Ulanday, a Fairfield resident for eight years, recently made his Broadway debut at The National High School Musical Theatre Awards held on June 27, 2022, at the Minskoff Theater in New York City. The "Jimmy Awards" (named after James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theatre owner and producer) celebrates outstanding student achievement in high school musical theatre. The award impacts over 140,000 students annually who participate in musical theatre competitions sponsored by over forty professional theatres throughout the U.S. Theatre Under The Stars is the administrative body that conducts the competition for the Greater Houston area. Jake, a member of Bridgeland High School's Class of 2023, won Best Performance in a Lead Role by TUTS for his portrayal as Anthony Hope in BHS's production of Sweeney Todd, School Edition, directed by Adam Delka and Nathan Stanaland. Even though his first onstage appearance was in 5th grade (as Linus in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown), his winning performance marked his first lead role in high school. "Up until my sophomore year of high school, I was pretty scared to get up on stage and act in front of everybody," Jake said. That year, he was chosen as an understudy for a role and unexpectedly found himself on stage when the lead fell ill. Continued on Page 2 Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

"At first, I was scared, but I gave it my all, and at the show's end, I got a bunch of congratulations from everybody, and it was a great feeling." Jake likens his Broadway experience to practicing while he was on Bridgeland's golf team. "Performing well on stage and in a tournament takes a lot of hard work and repetition. You spend all that time practicing, learning all the lines, and to see it pay off feels really good." Jake plans to pursue a career in acting or a degree in the performing arts. CFISD states that students from the Bridgeland, Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods high school theatre departments were nominated in 11 categories in the Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) Tommy Tune Awards, held virtually on May 27. The awards are Houston’s high school version of the Tony Awards, which recognize and celebrate musical theatre. The 2022 awards were highlighted by Bridgeland High School junior Jake Ulanday winning Best Performance in a Lead Role for his role of Anthony Hope in the school’s production of Sweeney Todd and Cypress Ranch High School junior C.J. Friend earning a runner-up award for Best Performance in a Lead Role for her role of Berthe in the school’s production of Pippin. According to CFISD, in addition to earning Tommy Tune Awards, both Ulanday and Friend are 2022 National High School Musical Theatre Jimmy Award nominees. The national competition will bring together approximately 90 students who will work with Broadway professionals for a week. The week concludes with the Jimmy Awards, which include both awards and scholarships.

Skip-Generational Vacations By Jackie Devine

Fairfield and its sister community, Lakes of Fairhaven, are unique. Possibly a third of their residents are at least 50 years old, and many of those folks are grandparents living close to and, like me, within walking distance of their grandchildren.

and Mary College—one of the oldest institutions of learning in the country—and sat in the hall where many of our forefathers listened to lectures. We also participated in reenacting the British surrender to General Washington at Yorktown, where I played the part of George.

However, even though many of us drive our grandkids to school and attend their ballgames, music programs, or dance recitals, we often don't spend quality time getting to know each other on a deeper level. Daily, we go about our scheduled routine and attend to the business at hand, and sometimes special opportunities to play and have fun fall by the wayside. That is why I decided to take my 12-year-old grandson Robbie on what has been coined a Skip-Generational Vacation.

Then we ventured to Washington, D.C., where we visited the Lincoln Memorial. Standing there together we recited Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. We toured the city, where we took in the monuments and caught glimpses of the other magnificent buildings we often see on TV. Our last stop was the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, where we had a private tour that proved to me how much Robbie already knew about paleontology and Egyptian history.

I felt it might give us a break from our fast-paced, hectic lifestyle. And if we succeeded in getting away together on vacation, all our other distractions and daily concerns might magically evaporate. I was also hoping it would give us time to build stronger bonds and allow me to play a unique role in imparting a few old-fashioned values, instilling a sense of family, and creating some cherished memories.

The unexpected benefit of our trip was that Robbie got a chance to visit his ancestors' homeland, in both Missouri and Virginia, and discuss facets of his genealogy, allowing him to learn more about his family history. He reveled in hearing stories about his two greatgrandfathers who fought in WWII, where they were stationed, and their part in winning the war. Plus, he had the chance to listen to his granddad’s “fish” stories and catch a peek where he used to camp on the banks of Missouri's Meramec River.

So, in June, Robbie, his grandfather, and I charted our course, traveled over 2800 miles together, and delved into American history. We explored our nation's birthplace in Virginia. We walked along the site John Smith settled in Jamestown and explored replicas of the ships that brought him and other settlers to this country. We strolled down the streets of Williamsburg and traversed the halls of William 4

I firmly believe that our 2022 get-away was a total success. It brought us closer together and gave us a renewed appreciation of how lucky we are to be Americans. Continued to Page 5 Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

Lakes on Eldridge North Skip-Generational Vacations- continued from Page 4

If you haven't taken a skip-generational vacation, you might want to consider one. Studies show that vacations where kids and grandparents travel together—and leave parents at home—are becoming increasingly popular. According to lifestyle magazine Sixty and Me and AARP. •

One in five parents say their children have taken a skip-gen trip—that is, traveled with grandparents without the parents.

Six in 10 kids say they feel closer to their grandparents after taking a trip together.

65% of children say they like to reminisce about taking vacations with grandparents.

More than a third of grandparents said they plan a skip-gen vacation in the next three years.

I'll gladly offer my insight if you have questions or want more information about skip-generational vacations. I have plenty of experience. Over the years, I’ve scooped up my grands and taken them to San Antonio, Lake Medina, St. Louis, Memphis, and the east coast, sans parents. You can reach me at jackiedevine@peelinc.com.

Pawzitively Fabulous Pet Service Is Eager to Groom Your Pet Pawzitively Fabulous Pet is a relatively new mobile pet grooming service in Cypress, Texas. They have been servicing the area for about seven months and, although the company is new, they have eight years of experience in the pet service industry. They are grooming and canine CPR certified and are constantly working on new certifications to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the pet industry. They are an LGBTQ+-supportive and operated business. Pawzitively Fabulous Pet enjoys giving back to their community. They have partnered with several local senior citizen living facilities to provide discounted grooms for the residents' pets, as many are on fixed incomes. Pawzitively Fabulous Pet has also partnered with the mobile pet vaccine company AZ Mobile Pet Vaccines, which works with rescue groups to provide services and awareness for rescue animals. Their love for animals and the safety of all pets is the driving force that makes Pawzitively Fabulous Pet the unique company they are. They wanted to stand out and be different, so they renovated a small cozy RV as their mobile grooming salon instead of the standard mobile van. They go above and beyond for their clients because they love their work.

Pawzitively Fabulous Pet goes by the motto, “It’s not a job; it’s love!” They offer spa-like grooming services to their clients with fun packages, such as a birthday spa package or pet-safe hair color, as well as regular grooming services. They are one of few mobile pet grooming companies that offer cat grooming services. They also provide quality pet sitting services. Pawzitively Fabulous Pet was formed by Karen Seiffert, a spunky, pink-haired pet lover who has a way with even the most challenging and demanding pets. She will stop and socialize with any pet she sees. At age 51, she hung up her nursing school stethoscope to care for four-legged patients because that was where her heart was leading her, and she couldn’t be happier with that decision. She has two full-time employees, Nefi Marval and Paige Downtain, and one part-time employee, Karen’s son, Joshua, who she states, “Without them, Pawzitively would not be what it is.” She views them more as partners and less as employees. “We are a family, The Pawzitively Fabulous Family.”

AUGUST 2022 “PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK” I remember the day everything changed for me in a mind-blowing, life-altering, unbelievable way. I’ll start by saying we all have course-altering things that happen, and we can use those experiences to walk taller in life. I believe our life’s story is painted best when we let our hearts do the designing and our hands do the work. For those new to JBTM – welcome to the stage where music mixed with real-life is front and center! In my world now, as CMS founder and lead singer of my band HURRY SUNDOWN, I always find people asking me, “So, how did you get into music?” The answer is simple to start. I was born into it; my dad was a drummer, and I watched him play the local music circuit growing up from birth until 2022, when he retired after 40+ years of professional music-making. I, however, didn’t begin my journey in singing and performing until I was 39 years of age. I’m a Cypress native, wife, mother of two teens, and commissioned artist. I’ve held various jobs in the past, but I always found creativity to be my favorite outlet, and I’ve always been driven to succeed at whatever I put my heart into and focus on. When we get nudges – or shoves – from life that change our direction, that’s the whole point; to change. Let it guide you and learn to be flexible. Sometimes you don’t get a choice not to be. The chapters of my life continue to unfold and be written, and the ones on the pages that have already been turned – well, they’re what led me to you. Whether you know me from CYPRESS MUSIC SCENE, my band HURRY SUNDOWN, or from JOYCE BEHIND THE MIC, I’m here as your fellow local!
