Spring Trails Celebrates Big!

WOW! What a memorable day July 4th was for Spring Trails . Back and better than ever was the 4th of July parade. This year’s parade showcased dozens of bikes, scooters, and wagons, classic cars and motorcycles, all brightly decorated in red, white and blue. Scout Troops T293 and T1293 served as color guard and led the procession presenting the United States and Texas flags. South Montgomery County Fire Department, Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable and HEB joined in on the fun. And Uncle Sam waived to the crowd from a beautifully decorated float honoring our nation and Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

veterans. It was a tremendous parade and all thanks to a small team of resident volunteers who worked for months to coordinate the logistics and decorate the float. How blessed are we to have such talented and dedicated residents. Afterward, parade participants and observers gathered at the parking lot of Broadway Elementary to visit and enjoy a hot dog lunch grilled up by Tailgate USA. As an added bonus kids young and old received new, 20year anniversary, commemorative frisbees. It was truly another special day in Spring Trails.

A great big Spring Trails thank you to the dedicated and gracious members of the allvolunteer parade committee for bringing back the much loved parade, Al and Mary Nowak and Ralph and Dolores Jones for spending their day serving hot dogs and snacks to hundreds of Spring Trails residents, and certainly Genette Wilbanks for managing and preparing all the event communications and registrations. Planning has already begun for next year’s parade. Contact the Board of Directors through Request Manager if you would like to get involved in planning next year’s parade and celebration. Kindness is Contagious Pass it On

RAK (random act of kindness): School supplies. Many of us will take extended vacations this summer. And some of us will choose to stay-cation. If you are the latter, take the initiative to watch over your neighbor’s home while they’re away. Put out and put away garbage carts. Pick up the newspaper or deliveries and store until they return. Park a car in the driveway. And of course call the police if you see anything suspicious. RAK Bonus: Don’t forget the teachers. Make sure to check for a teacher’s tsupplies list while you’re at it. They too need a little help once in a while.

SPRING TRAILS How Does Your Garden Grow? Contributed by Roger Olsen

It’s REALLY hot and maybe you’re wondering if anything beautiful can grow during the oppressive humidity and heat. Well, there’s good news! From now until the end of October, your garden will continue to feel the heat and may lose its abundant green foliage and your flowering plants will be found without flowers and dry parched soil all around. What to do? Make sure you keep your garden watered, most preferably in the mornings and ensure the soil is moist at a depth of at least 8-10 inches. One of the great and beautifully colorful summer loving plants is the Flame Acanthus. It is a tough perennial with beautiful bright green leaves and the most amazing red-orange flowers that look like upright trumpets (the old long ones like in Ben Hur). You can imagine hummingbirds LOVE this flower which starts blooming in June and typically continues to bloom through the end of the year. Put this sun-lover in full sun but if the garden gets some partial shade during the day, it will do fine. Prune it back after the blooming so it stays in shrub form. If you or just about anybody loves butterflies, Texas Lantana is a definite add to your garden / landscape. This beauty comes out of dormancy when temperatures warm up and it lasts all summer. It grows super fast when cared for and can start flowering as early as April. It is a member of the verbena family and a Texas native which is drought tolerant and produces brilliant orange, red, and yellow flowers. One other excellent choice is Gregg’s Mistflower which is a beautiful Texas perennial with exquisite lavender / blue flowers that will bring the butterflies. The plant is a shrub, spreads easily, but just loves the sun and will tolerate some shade as well as the various soils we have in this part of Texas. It too can bloom in early April and will typically last through the fall. So, if you thought you couldn’t get beautiful color for your late summer garden, these choices are perfect. Visit a local nursery such as Arborgate, Plants For All Seasons or Nature’s Way Resources. They have knowledgeable help, unlike the large garden stores. I personally prefer these specialty nurseries to get well cared for and vigorous plants as well as sound advice. If you want to see more about these plants and other Texas natives, type www.wildflower.org/plants into your browser and see how easy it is to put color into your garden all year long!
