Supporting the Troops

Early this fall, three organizations Community of Faith, Back the Blue Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, and Operation Lone Star Texans Supporting Our Troops - joined forces to collect items for care packages to send overseas to our outstanding military men and women serving our nation.

The idea was the brainchild of two men: Bobby Roberts, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, the Director of Security at Community of Faith, and member of Back the Blue Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, and Jim Conley, a 37-year veteran of HPD, U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran and President of Operation Lone Star-Texans Supporting Our Troops. Once the two felt their idea had credibility, Bobby approached Johnie Jones, head of Missions and Community Engagement at Community of Faith.

Their mission was to increase the morale of deployed service members from all military branches by providing them with care packages filled with non-perishable food, personal care supplies, and miscellaneous fun items. They hoped the packages would help keep the recipients healthy, sharp, and motivated.

From start to finish, the three-way coalition worked diligently to develop, execute, and manage the important project. Their fourweek drive ended on October 24 so they could be ready to pack and ship the packages by mid-November.

Approximately 1.3 million active-duty personnel are stationed at roughly 750 U.S. foreign military bases that spread across 80 nations! And tens of thousands of service members on the front lines could benefit from an ongoing supply of hygiene, nutrition, medical supplies, and operational gear.

If you’ve never heard of Operation Lone Star-Texans Supporting Our Troops, it is not affiliated with Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, launched in March 2021 to respond to a rise in illegal immigration.

Operation Lone Star Texans Supporting Our Troops is a 501(c)(3) Texas non-profit corporation founded by families who have had, or currently have, loved ones serving in the Armed Forces. Their mission is to provide fellowship, guidance, encouragement, and support to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families and friends.

Three of their most well-known events include:

• The Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run, which brings communities throughout the country, and around the world, together to honor the sacrifices of all the Heroes of September 11, including veterans, first responders, military, and civilians.

• Memorial Day Weekend where, on Friday, they place a wreath on the grave of a high school friend who was Killed in Action in Vietnam on January 17, 1971; on Saturday, they place over 700 small flags honoring the names inscribed on the walls of the Fallen Warriors Memorial; on Sunday, they assist in placing several thousand flags on veteran graves at Houston National Cemetery; and on Monday, Memorial Day, they participate in ceremonies at the Fallen Warriors Memorial.

• Two weeks before Christmas, the OLS-TSOT places 200 Christmas wreaths on the graves of veterans to honor their service and to remind their families that they will never be forgotten.

The Back the Blue Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club consists of federal agents, peace officers, firefighters, paramedics, military veterans, and civilians. Their mission is to provide support to peace officers and law enforcement families in their times of need. When Back the Blue LEMC sponsors an event, all military branches, fire stations, and law enforcement agencies come out in force to participate in their amazing events.

Community of Faith’s mission and community engagement programs focus on organizations in Houston and many different nongovernmental organizations around the world. Over the years, they have built and support an orphanage in Costa Rica, as well as a home for homeless elderly in Nicaragua. They have transformed an entire community, including an elementary school, trade school, and health clinic, for the Batwa people in Burundi, Africa. They routinely aid families impacted by natural disasters both locally and internationally, partner with organizations to support survivors of human trafficking, and much, much more.

If you are interested in participating to help promote the morale of our deployed U.S. service members from all branches of the military, please contact johniej@communityoffaith.tv. Community of Faith is located 16124 Becker Road, Hockley Texas. In addition, Operation Lone Star-Texans Supporting Our Troops mails packages quarterly and on an as-needed basis. Should you have family members who are currently deployed, please email names and deployment addresses to OLS at OperationLoneStar@hotmail.com, or call Jim at 281-5135661 and he will see to it your loved one is added to the care package mailing list. Around Fairfield National Night Out: A Great Success

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. The ultimate goal of National Night Out is to make our neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live. The event enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while fostering a true sense of community.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our area sponsors who helped us make our National Night Out event in Fairfield a fun time for all! We love serving our great community and meeting our neighbors. Special thanks also to our fire department and our Bridgeland High School Key Club!

The Ellis-Nabors Team of the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene Team puts on the event in Fairfield each year. They recruit sponsors and set up the event. Wanda Abel, an agent with their team, started this event 4 years ago and it has grown every year.

What can we do about Airbnb’s in our community?

Our family moved to Fairfield in 2017. We chose Fairfield because of its quiet and familyoriented setting. It was not too far from the city and had plenty of nearby amenities, a low crime rate, and good schools. In September of 2021, the home next door to ours was sold to an individual who turned it into an Airbnb. It has been nothing short of a living nightmare since.

The homes in this neighborhood are mostly four-bedroom, two-story houses occupied by your typical family. The house next door is currently listed on Airbnb as having four bedrooms, ten beds, and accommodating up to sixteen guests. Sixteen! Every week, we have sixteen new neighbors. They’re loud, they do drugs (we smell it constantly), and they leave mountains of trash on the curb. We’ve even had people sticking their cell phones over the fence, taking pictures of our backyard, and harassing our dogs.

The real issue is that the house right next door to ours is an Airbnb, period. There should be HOA regulations prohibiting it. In our situation, the problem will continue indefinitely, resolving only if the owner sells the house to a family that will occupy it as their primary residence, or we sell our house and move. Those are the only two paths forward, at this point. It would make more sense if this was a beachfront community lined with vacation rentals. But it is far from that, we’re 75 miles from the beach.

When I received this article, I was not aware that Fairfield had Airbnb’s scattered throughout the community. After researching our area, there were ten available houses, a suite, and a room. Although it sounds like a great entrepreneurial idea, hear what someone living next to one has to say.

We have filed complaints with the HOA, the police, Airbnb, and even reached out directly to the owner of the home. The HOA does nothing. The police say they can’t do anything about drug use unless they’re “caught redhanded”. Airbnb just sends a message to the owner. The owner claims to address the issues.

However, the real issue is not necessarily the fact that we must file complaints constantly.

I do understand entrepreneurship, however, allowing something like this to take place in a master-planned community is wrong. Allowing it to continue despite the obvious negative impact on homeowners speaks volumes about the Fairfield HOA and law enforcement, as well as some Airbnb owners with a disgusting level of greed and complete disregard for how they affect the lives of other people.

What was basically a dream home for us 5 years ago is now nothing but a nightmare. We have no recourse or easy way out. Good luck selling our home when the prospective buyer finds out there’s an Airbnb next door! Will Fairfield put an end to this and prevent it from happening in the future?? We need real solutions, not suggestions.

fourth consecutive year—down from $0.9292 in 2021, $0.9555 in 2020, $0.97 in 2019 and $1.06 in 2018.

CFISD also offers a local optional homestead exemption of 20 percent of the appraised value of a home. When paired with a $40,000 state exemption, a CFISD taxpayer with a home valued at $350,000 would pay a tax based on $240,000 of value.

The 2022 tax rate decrease will save the owner of a home valued at $350,000 approximately $307 on their annual property tax bill.

The CFISD Board of Trustees approved a 2022 tax rate of $1.2948 per $100 of property valuation—a reduction of $0.0444 from 2021—during its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 10.

Being an auctioneer can be rewarding and lucrative

How many female auctioneers have you met in your life? Chances are not very many. As of July 2022, only 15 % of National Auctioneer Association members were women. Of that 15%, an astounding 78% of those women are auctioneers and entrepreneurs/business owners! So that tells you that Magnolia Gardens, the auction house in Hockley, Texas, owned and operated by Tina Murphy, is pretty special.

Tina started working the auction floor and presenting merchandise eighteen years ago. She became so enamored with the trade and the people that she decided to become a professional. So, she earned an auctioneer license, which required 80 hours of classroom instruction, through a TDLR-approved auction school. She studied specific topics relating to the business of auctioneering.

Tina explained, "I never cared for second-hand items growing up, but now it is my life and love. The history behind some items can be like a love story. Objects can hold so much value in them - and not necessarily monetary. I basically started out in this business doing antiques solely."

"During the pandemic, we had to adapt to the changes. But fortunately for us, unlike many other companies, we never stopped working and my employees kept their jobs. Several local businesses closed but we were able to help other businesses stay open. By us selling their overstock or other items, they could pay their bills, which tided them over. I am very grateful and proud of that.

"I feel happy and blessed that because of our community and reputation, we have been able to do many fundraising projects. We've raised over $13,000 for first responders. We have conducted auctions and fundraising projects for the nonprofit “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” which offers untold benefits to survivors facing medical bills due to illness. Because I own my building, I have the freedom to hold a variety of auctions and events there. We have held small business socials, pet rescue groups to help in pet adoption, vendor sales, and weekly auctions. I love being an auctioneer. I can help a variety of people – from those who want to honor their deceased loved ones to children helping their parents downsize or move to assisted living.

Items are precious treasures that represent memories of someone's hard-earned money, time, and life stories. My staff and I treat all items with great respect, as if each belonged to our own family members. You can find us every 3rd Saturday at 18090 Bauer Rd. Hockley, TX 77447 at 7:00 pm. All other Saturdays and Tuesdays , visit us online for a live auction at 7:00 pm at https://www.facebook. com/MagnoliaGardensAuction.

Cypress-Tomball Democrats

November Speaker: Egberto Willies Analysis of the 2022 Election

The Cypress-Tomball Democrats will hold its next monthly meeting, Monday, November 21, 2022 at Rudy’s Grill and Cantina, located at 11790 Grant Rd, Cypress, TX 77429. There is a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m. The general meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. For More info, visit our website at cytomdemocrats.org.

Our speaker will be Egberto Willies – Blogger/Radio personality - Politics Done Right

Egberto Willies is a political activist, author, political blogger, radio show host, business owner, software developer, web designer, and mechanical engineer in Kingwood, TX. Egberto is an ardent Progressive that believes tolerance is essential. His favorite phrase is “political involvement should be a requirement for citizenship”.

He believes that we must get away from the current policies that reward those who simply move money/capital and produce nothing tangible for our society. If a change in policy does not occur, America will be no different than many oligarchic societies where a few are able to accumulate wealth while the rest are left out because it is mathematically impossible to catch up.

All are welcome to attend and to join this growing club, which meets on the third Monday of every month. For more information email us at cytomdems@yahoo.com, go to our Cypress-Tomball Democrats Group on Facebook, or visit the club’s Website at cytomdemocrats.org.

Fairfield Republicans

Fairfield Republicans are a group of conservative like-minded neighbors residing in Fairfield and neighboring areas. While we are predominately residents of Fairfield and the adjoining subdivisions, we welcome people from other precincts to attend our meetings as well. Our group meets every month to provide information to our community about current legislative priorities and other pertinent information. We can be found on Facebook under the heading of Fairfield Republicans. Please check those pages for confirmation of the upcoming meeting dates. In honor of Veteran's Day, we have a special program about Camp Hope that provides interim housing for our combat veterans suffering from combatrelated PTSD in a caring & positive environment.

With the reassignment of Jay Fondren, our previously planned speaker, we will hear from a new speaker, Alex Yutzey, Camp Hope Program Manager, a former US Army combat veteran, who will describe his story of serving tours in Iraq & Afghanistan before the age of 20 & the "invisible" injuries of war... PTSD & drugs.

Alex best tells of the impact that Camp Hope has had on him... "Camp Hope saved my life, it saved my marriage, it gave me my son (Alex Jr, 2 years old) & a new baby on the way (Scarlett Piper). Camp Hope didn't just give me my life back; it gave me a life I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams. I am called to give back what was so freely given to me. The HOPE that any veteran struggling can find HEALING and PURPOSE through FELLOWSHIP & FAITH in the Lord our GOD."
