José Serebrier Symphony No. 1 for Orchestra
Score
After early musical training in Montevideo, Uruguay, where I began to compose and to conduct, I was honored to be invited to study with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood in 1956. After an idyllic six weeks, and then a month in New York, I was to start my first year at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, studying with Vittorio Giannini. During those four weeks in New York I worked intensely on my first symphony, which was my second orchestral work. I was 17. The Symphony, together with my earlier saxophone quartet, went on to win a BMI Young Composer Award that year. I had decided to write a one-movement symphony with connected sections in different tempi, feeling that the idea of a multiple-movement symphony of largely unrelated sections no longer applied in the middle of the 20th century. I had had very little exposure to contemporary music, except for the festival of American music I organized in Montevideo the year before, in which I included everything from Varèse to Cage. They both fascinated me. Curiously, I hadn’t discovered Ives just yet. The following year, while walking towards school, I bumped into cellist Harvey Wolf. Literally -- my score fell to the floor. Wolf was on his way to the airport to join the Houston Symphony. He instinctively asked if he could carry the score with him to show to Leopold Stokowski, who had just hired him as the last cellist in the orchestra. I had another copy, so I agreed, not expecting anything from this gesture. A couple of days later, the Curtis telephone operator started giving me messages to call Mr. Stokowski. I was sure it was a joke, as I used to leave messages for other students to call Bernstein or Rubinstein. Eventually, the Institute’s Director, Efrem Zimbalist Sr, called me to his office. “What are you doing? Maestro Stokowski called me to say he’s been trying to reach you urgently for two days!” We called from his office. There was this highly accented voice telling me: “We tried doing the premiere of the Charles Ives Fourth Symphony but it proved impossible. Orchestra can’t get past first bars. Need a premiere. Press invited: Time magazine, Life, UPI, AP. We do your symphony premiere instead. Please bring music. Rehearsals start in two days.” The premiere of my first symphony took place in Houston on November 4th, 1957. The concert also included Debussy’s Épigraphes antiques, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Leonard Pennario as soloist, and Stokowski’s own orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (it was the first time I heard it; I later recorded and filmed it). But another, more momentous event took place that evening: the USSR had launched the first man-made object in space, the Sputnik. Although the symphony was a big success with the public and the critics, the interviews with Time and Life magazines never came out. Space science filled the news for weeks and weeks. It was with great surprise and joy that I learned of the 2010 CD release of the Stokowski premiere of my first symphony, taken from the original broadcast so long ago. Incredibly, its release coincided with my own first actual studio recording of this early work for Naxos in 2010. —José Serebrier
Recorded in 1957 by the Houston Symphony with conductor Leopold Stokowski, released on CD in 2010 (Guild 2347) Recorded in 2009 by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with conductor José Serebrier, released in 2010 (Naxos 8559648)
José Serebrier established himself as a significant composer very early in his career. Following the premiere of his Symphony No. 1, he was awarded two consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships at 19 and 20, he remains the youngest person to have ever obtained these awards in any field. Subsequent awards for his compositions include a Rockefeller Foundation award as Composer in Residence with the Cleveland Orchestra, at the invitation of George Szell; a Harvard Musical Association Commission Award (for Fantasia for string quartet); a Pan American Union Publication Award (for Elegy for Strings); a National Endowment for the Arts Commission (Orpheus x Light, a ballet for the Joffrey Ballet); a BMI Young Composer Award (for his Symphony No. 1); and commissions from the American Accordionists Association and others. Serebrier’s works have been recorded by Leopold Stokowski, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and many others, and are available on BIS, Reference Recordings, Naxos, Warner Classics, Decca, Universal, RPO Records, Toccata Classics, SOMM Recordings, Cedille, and Sony. He is one of the most recorded classical artists in history. For further information: www.joseserebrier.com www.peermusicClassical.com
