Mark Webber went second quickest for Red Bull Racing and Jean-Eric Vergne third for Toro Rosso. Behind the top three many teams opted to give a run to third and reserve drivers. Jerome d’Ambrosio was fourth quickest for Lotus, Nico Rosberg fifth for Mercedes. Kamui Kobayashi came next for Sauber. Oliver Turvey was seventh for McLaren and Jules Bianchi eighth for Force India. Rodolfo Gonzalez was ninth for Caterham, Charles Pic tenth for Marussia and Valtteri Bottas eleventh for Williams. 10

Both McLaren and Mercedes switched their drivers for the afternoon, but owing to the incessant rain, Gary Paffett was restricted to a handful of laps and was half a minute off the pace while Michael Schumacher set no time. The only non-attendees were HRT, who opted out of the test, saying they preferred to concentrate on getting their new factory set up in Madrid. With the track wet many teams completed an installation lap when the pitlane opened and then headed to the garage to wait until the circuit dried.

Only by mid-morning with the dry patches appearing did testing begin in earnest. Among the most notable things on display were heavily revised bodywork on Kobayashi’s Sauber and a large sensor suite bolted to the back of Webber’s RB8. Approaching lunch Jean-Eric Vergne was quickest, with Alonso and Rosberg right behind him. All three men had also stopped out on track at various times, Vergne causing the first red flag, spinning off on the still-wet track. Alonso managed to go fastest before coming to a halt. He had completed 38 laps. Little running occurred in the afternoon as the rain increased. Eventually the session was redflagged as the cloud cover made it impossible for the medical helicopter to operate, and while things cleared up a little later on and the track went green again, there was little additional running, Alonso stayed top, having completed 46 laps. “It’s a shame about the rain, which complicated the running of this first day of testing and a shame for the spectators who deserved to see more of a show,” said Alonso. “We had a pretty busy work programme, but we only managed to get through a part of it. Therefore, it’s impossible to give a serious evaluation, especially as we did so little dry running. I can only say that,

REPORT MUGELLO TESTING for me, it was a pleasure to be driving at this track again: the first and only other time was back in 2001, when I was testing for Minardi. It’s a spectacular track and it would be nice to be able to race on it!” Alonso’s view was echoed by second fastest Webber: “Obviously, the weather wasn’t great today, so we didn’t get to do much running in the dry. Really, we only got one decent run on the slicks. Then it rained after lunch and with limited sets of wets available, you can’t do that much. We’re hoping for better over the next couple of days. “It’s an important test. We have a lot of information to gather and, while today didn’t quite work out as expected, I’m optimistic that over the course of the next few days we’ll get the information we need. I have to say this is a fantastic track. It’s very challenging for the driver and very quick. I don’t know if we’ll ever race here in the future, you never know, but to see the crowd here today was very special. A lot of people came to watch and that’s great.”

The circuit, which was built in the early seventies has been a regular fixture in MotoGP, sportscar racing, Formula 3000 and other junior formulae, is owned by Ferrari and was often the setting for the team’s in season testing which was permitted until 2008 - particularly during Michael schumacher’s era with the Maranello squad. After much coaxing from Ferrari the F1 world descended on the picturesque circuit, in the Tuscan hills, for the fourth official testing of the season and the response from drivers has been enthusiastic. Around 15,000 tifosi endured the weather and packed the main grand

Fernando Alonso, the chief target of the cheers, commented, “It was a pleasure to be driving at this track again: the first and only other time was back in 2001, when I was testing for Minardi. It’s a spectacular track and it would be nice to be able to race on it!” “It’s a shame about the rain, which complicated the running of this first day of testing and a shame for the spectators who deserved to see more of a show,” added the Ferrari driver.

It’s also good preparation for the next race in Barcelona with the high-speed corners.” Red Bull driver Mark Webber was equally enthused despite the wet and miserable conditions, “I have to say this is a fantastic track. ast year Adrian Newey for the first time publicly revealed his emotions and thoughts surrounding Ayrton Senna’s death – on 1 May 1994 at Imola – while driving one of the cars designed by him saying that the tragedy changed his life. He recalled the dark period in the aftermath of the accident that robbed Formula 1 of its greatest superstar. 26

S ANGUISH IN THE 994

cover story ayrton BY ADRIAN NEWEY Speaking to the Guardian last year, Newey – the architect of Senna’s ill fated Williams FW16 – revealed that he was physically affected in the wake of what happened at Imola in 1994, “The little hair I had all fell out in the aftermath. So it changed me physically. It was dreadful. Both Patrick Head [the Williams technical director] and myself separately asked ourselves whether we wanted to continue in racing. Did we want to be involved in a sport where people can die in something we’ve created? Secondly, was the

accident caused by something that broke through poor or negligent design? And then the court case started.” The acknowledged Formula 1 design genius, when asked if he thought of quitting the sport at the time confirmed: “Yes. For the whole team it was ncredibly difficult. I remember the day after the race was a bank holiday Monday and some of us came in to try and trawl though the data and work out what happened. They were dark weeks.”

Newey believes that the exact cause of the accident will never be ascertained, “The honest truth is that no one will ever know exactly what happened.” He asks the question: “There’s no doubt that the steering column failed and the big question was whether it failed in the accident or did it cause the accident? It had fatigue cracks in it and it would have failed at some point. There is no question that its design was very poor. However, all the evidence suggests the car did not go off the track as a result of steering column failure.” Newey, who is now technical boss for world champions Red Bull, has his own theory of what caused the Williams FW16 to plough into the wall at Tamburello that fateful day, saying the car “stepped out, the right rear tyre probably picked up a puncture from debris on the track. If I was pushed into picking out a single most likely cause, that would be it.”

KEITH SUTTON AND THE FIRST EVER SINGLE SEA For highly respected Formula One photographer Keith Sutton there have been many memorable moments in a career spanning over thirty years. In fact their have been very few momentous motorsport events where Keith hasn’t been there to witness first hand. Not long ago he was asked to pin down his favourite memory from his distinguished career and immediately a smile crossed his face and the response was almost instant: “Thirty years ago. March 1981 - Ayrton Senna.”

E LEGEND OF AYRTON’S ATER WIN

cover story ayrton BY keith sutton Over three decades ago - Keith, then a young and enthusiastic motorsport photographer trying hard to make his name in the sport, crossed paths with a young Formula Ford driver from Brazil who was also at the beginning of his career and attempting to make his own name in motorsport. That driver was Ayrton Senna da Silva and what was to follow that week was the start of a friendship that would last until the legendary driver was tragically killed one sunny, spring day at Imola during the San Marino Grand Prix. On March 8th, 1981, Ayrton Senna was competing in Formula Ford 1600 at the fast airfield circuit of Thruxton. This was only the Brazilian’s second car race having moved up from 100cc karts in his native country but already all eyes were on him after finishing an impressive fifth on his debut at Brands Hatch the week before. Having offered his photographic services to a variety of publications but only receiving indifferent replies in return he was commissioned by Autosport Brazil. Keith takes up the story. “I was at Thruxton working for a Brazilian motorsport magazine that wanted photographs of Brazilian drivers racing in England. I was shy in those days so I never introduced myself (to Senna) – I just took lots of photographs of him, in the paddock, on the track – he must have wondered why this photographer he had never seen before was taking so may rolls of film of him at only his second event in a racing car.” 34

cover story ayrton BY keith sutton The race win that day went to Rick Morris with Senna rounding off the podium in third place after an aggressive challenge for the position from Enrique Mansilla. The next round of the Townsend Thoresen championship was to be held at Brands Hatch on the 15th March. Keith remembers: “For some reason I decided to go down to Brands Hatch the following weekend on the train using a free British Rail promotion ticket that

was obtained after saving tokens from boxes of Kellogg’s Cornflakes.” “I had just arrived at the Brands paddock when Senna approached me after recognising me from Thruxton. He asked me why I had been taking photographs of him. ‘Are you a professional photographer?’ he enquired. ‘Yes of course,’ was my reply. Well I need photographs to send over to Brazil on a regular basis. Can you help me out?’ Naturally I agreed but only under the condition ‘that you pay me!’”

cover story ayrton BY keith sutton

Early spring weather in England is unpredictable at best and that week in March would see heavy rain, particularly on race day. Senna and his wife, Liliane, were still new to England and the cold and damp weather came as an unwelcome surprise to them as both were far more at home in the tropical weather of Sao Paolo. Senna’s Formula Ford race went ahead despite the wet conditions and those present at Brands Hatch that day were to witness history in the making that day, albeit unknowingly, as the small cars that were capable of 125mph, were to race around 15 laps of the shorter Indy Circuit. After winning his qualifying heat Senna would start the final from pole position. At 4:30pm the cars took to their allotted grid positions and when the lights went out Senna was seen to pull away as the cars rushed towards Graham Hill Bend in a wall of spray. Senna was invincible and took victory by 9.4 seconds from Mexican Alfonso Toledano. 38

cover story ayrton BY keith sutton The emotional Brazilian was met with a kiss from Liliane in parc ferme and joined her husband on the podium to celebrate his first victory in a car. Keith was also on the podium capturing all the emotions of this historic moment and remembers: “He won his heat, then he won his race and there I was on top of the rostrum doing the shots – fantastic light, him and his wife. Brilliant. From that moment I tried to get to as many Formula Ford races as possible, doing shots for him.” So was to begin a working relationship and friendship that would see Keith photographing this prodigious Brazilian talent and handling all his public relations. “I look back to that week with great fondness as it was the start of my friendship with the late, great Ayrton Senna. From the moment I first photographed him in only his second car race, and then taking his first victory a week later, I knew I was witnessing an incredibly charismatic and talented young racing driver who would one day go on to become one of Formula One’s legends.” And though it’s now thirty years ago since these events took place it’s clear that this memory of two aspiring talents who both met at the start of their respective professional careers will remain a special one to Keith for the rest of his life. 40

The story has entered Formula One folklore, of how Senna was leading after a safety car period from the young Michael Schumacher, desperate to beat the legendin-waiting after a poor opening to the season.

ntering the Tamburello curve, something caused the Williams to veer violently to the right in a split second before slamming into an unprotected wall at close to 150mph. Senna would have survived the impact, yet it was the unruly suspension rod that pierced the Brazilian’s helmet that ultimately killed him. After so many years, 18 to be exact, and so many eulogies, one could be forgiven for running out of things to say about the driver Nelson Piquet referred to as the “Sao Paolo taxi driver. However, the reach of this special Brazilian driver knows no bounds.

A number of people with different backgrounds have contributed to this article on Ayrton Senna. The number of people that he affected spans the globe. What of those that never saw the great Brazilian race? Luke Geddes, a young software engineer working in the automotive ndustry says, “Being only six years old at the time of the tragic incident n Imola, I had yet to take a keen interest in formula one. However after following the sport for a number of years now, there is one driver’s name that often comes up in any discussion surrounding the greatest driver – Ayrton Senna.

cover story ayrton by james rossi We can only imagine how successful he would have been, if he saw out the whole of his career in F1. It’s quite probable that Michael Schumacher would not have won as many world championships if Senna was there to challenge him. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that May 1st 1994 saw the loss of potentially the best driver in F1 history.” Perhaps what is most striking is that Senna’s persona is even more magnified after his death. This has led to calls that the Brazilian is nothing but a martyr, elevated to god-like status after his tragic passing. However, Senna was a driver like no other. A deeply religious man, Senna was not just

a sportsman, but a tremendously charismatic and philosophical individual. From his admission on a Monte Carlo qualifying lap that he realised he was no longer consciously driving his car (which proved correct, where he went over a second faster than the next fastest driver, Prost), to the revelation after his death that he had secretly given millions of his earnings to charities in Brazil, to the discovery of a furled Austrian flag in the wreckage of his fatal accident (in homage to Roland Ratzenberger, who had died the previous day). He was a rare human being that wasn’t commonly found in the ultrarich, superficial world of a professional sport such as Formula 1.

cover story ayrton by james rossi Let us put the first example in context. The final qualifying session of the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix. In the words of Senna himself: “I was already on pole, then by half a second and then one second and I just kept going. Suddenly I was nearly two seconds faster than anybody else, including my team mate with the same car. And suddenly I realised that I was no longer driving the car consciously. Then suddenly something just kicked me. I kind of woke up and realised that I was in a different atmosphere than you normally are. My immediate reaction was to back off, slow down. I drove slowly back to the pits and I didn’t want to go out any more that day. It frightened me because I was well beyond my conscious understanding.” At this circuit, with the identical machinery on hand to Senna and Prost, this day was nothing short of astonishing. It was this experience that compelled Ayrton Senna to describe how he felt that he had encountered God on that day, and it is this theological interpretation of a material world that proves so inspiring to a generation always wanting more. 48

From a British point of view, Ayrton Senna is seen as something of a mystery. The British stoic personality cannot understand the philosophical and intense nature of a man like Senna. The attributes that made the three times World Champion successful are altogether more observable to a British eye, such as the will to win, the fight, the hard-edged driving that drew criticism as it did praise. However, perhaps it is best left to one of Senna’s own to describe what kind of effect he has had on people who have known of him. Bianca Ghidini, a resident of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, gives a personal insight into the wonder of Senna, “For everyone else Ayrton Senna da Silva may be just a pilot that won a couple of races around the world, but to us, Brazilians, he is more than that.”

cover story ayrton by james rossi

For me, it’s a personal thing. My parents got divorced when I only two years old. And every other weekend I used to spend at my dad’s house. As I started to get a little bigger, my dad and I developed some Sunday rituals. And one of them was watching Senna race every Sunday morning having breakfast in bed. So, what he means to me is family. He brought me closer to my dad. I feel that he belongs in my life, he has a meaning. That’s why after the tragic accident, our ritual sort of faded. We really enjoyed watching him and cheering for him. No one else was the same as he was. He really was special. 52

And we know he has a very special place in every Brazilian heart. In the age of corporate drivers that we live in now, the ilk of Senna has all but disappeared. Individuality and a 100% cast-iron will to win must now be tempered with politically correct interviews and verbal straight-jackets. We must never forget Senna, a gift from God that we may never see the like of again. As is simply written on the grave of this mystical Brazilian: Nada me pode separar do amor de Deus.

E OF THE SENNA-ERA

COVER STORY ayrton by f1 novice Although having never actually met the man, Ayrton Senna seemed to be an amazingly driven man – it’s kind of funny but sometimes when you are living through an era like, that when someone like Senna comes along you don’t necessarily realise at the time that you are observing is history in the making. This may seem a bit odd now, but back in those days I remember watching Senna getting pole week in and week out, then during one year (must have been ‘88 – having just had a quick peek at the stats) watching him dominating

a massive percentage of races by starting from pole, putting in some stonking early laps to create a gap then controlling the race by maintaining the gap keeping it at around 10 seconds. If the guy in second put in a quick lap on one ap Senna would put in a quicker lap the very next lap to re-instate the gap! I remember sometimes thinking it was becoming a little boring with Senna winning so many races in a season, you kind of knew Senna would be on pole and he was most probably going to win it.

COVER STORY ayrton by f1 novice A bit like, more recently, when Schumacher was dominating. It’s only later that you realise what a genius behind the wheel you were witnessing, something you didn’t really grasp or comprehend that at that time. There’s was quite a lot of folklore that surrounded Senna during those years that used to make me laugh – how much of it was true I don’t know. One story I heard was that it was Senna who made made John Watson question his own future in Formula 1 and finally made him realise it was time to

He was, in his mind on a good lap, happily going through Dingle Dell as quick as he could (Dingle Dell a much different corner in those days than it s today it used to be an elongated quick chicane – quick flick right/left right then onto Stirlings) when a car overtook him THROUGH Dingle Dell at an unbelievable rate of knots.

That in itself is pretty amazing if you know that corner in that configuration. Watson said at the time that the back of the car that passed him was absolutely on the edge of adhesion with it’s rear tyres virtually dancing over the Tarmac, apparently Watson aborted his lap and went into the pits totally stunned and 60

COVER STORY ayrton by f1 novice On a lighter note the relationship between Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna used to make me chuckle – Berger being the practical joker….. There’s a story of an incident at Monza where in a joint helicopter ride Senna had been showing off his new tailor-made briefcase. Having been made of carbon fibre composite, Senna argued that it should be virtually indestructible. Berger, without much hesitation, and much to Senna’s disbelief, opened the door of the helicopter and threw the briefcase out, to test the hypothesis. Another one was that Berger filled Senna’s bed with animals. Senna understandably infuriated, confronted Berger by saying: “I’ve spent the last hour catching 12 frogs in my room,” to which Berger replied, “Did you find the snake?” The funniest though being an incident in which Berger replaced Senna’s passport photo with what Ron Dennis described as “an equivalent-sized piece of male genitalia”. Senna’s fame meant he rarely had his passport checked, but on a later trip to Argentina Berger’s prank resulted in officials holding the Brazilian for 24 hours. As a response to this gag, Senna superglued all of Berger’s credit cards together. 62

CRISIS TO LINGER OR ACK TO WINNING WAYS?

for the record red bull After a victory drought spanning the opening three races of the 2012 season, Red Bull broke through with Sebastian Vettel’s familiar win-from-pole triumph in Bahrain last weekend. It means he has leapt to the top of the drivers’ standings, while the Milton Keynes based team is now 9 points clear of its nearest rival, McLaren. “King Sebastian is back!” exclaimed the authoritative newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport after Bahrain. “Vettel and Red Bull dominated like old times. They have worked hard in recent weeks to have a great car again, so it will be difficult once again to take the throne from Sebastian.” The energy drink-owned camp, however, is not so bullish: “To predict our performance in Bahrain just a week after what happened in China would have been tricky,” said team boss Christian Horner, referring to Vettel’s fifth place in Shanghai. “I am sure that with 16 races to go, we are going to see a lot more variation.” Vettel agrees that, despite the familiar pole-and-victory in Bahrain, 2012 is not the same as 2011, when the RB7 car utterly dominated F1, “We’re not as confident as we used to be,” he is quoted by the Sun newspaper, “so small things can make a difference in qualifying and have a big impact on the race. We’ve only had four races but I’m not entirely happy with where we are.” Vettel will be back in action next week, when F1 moves to the Mugello circuit in central Italy for a rare in-season test. “In Italy we’ll be able to test and evaluate a lot of things and get the car in a happier place for Barcelona.” 68

EEL LIKE ROCKY,

for the record fernando alonso Speaking to Spanish journalists at the Ferrari owned circuit, where F1 has descended for three days of in season testing, Alonso said, “I feel like Rocky, always fighting.” Alonso referring to the perennial underdog, fictional boxing character Rocky Balboa made famous by Sylvester Stallone in several ‘Rocky’ Hollywood movies. “It seems that way I am on 30 meter high wire. If I take a wrong turn or small mistake when braking, I just won’t make it into the top ten. We lack the basics: a fast car. With a team like Ferrari, a good car is enough,” mused Alonso. But the two times world champion remains optimistic and what the target must be to remain in contention. he told La Stampa, “We must qualify in the top ten, fight for the top five in each race and have both cars in the points. We have to take one step at Barcelona, one in Monte Carlo, Canada and so on.” He added, “We are optimistic. I’m the best in qualifying, in the wet, in the race, on street circuits. I try to be a 9.5 [out of 10] in everything. I respect people who work steadily in Maranello, I must pay them 101%.” Alonso topped the time sheets at the end of the rain interrupted first day at Mugello, “It’s a shame about the rain, which complicated the running of this first day of testing and a shame for the spectators who deserved to see more of a show. We had a pretty busy work programme, but we only managed to get through a part of it. Therefore, it’s impossible to give a serious evaluation, especially as we did so little dry running.”

for the record JENSON BUTTON Button won the opening race of the 2012 F1 world championship season when he powered to Australian Grand Prix victory back in March, but since then fortune has not favoured the McLaren driver who now lies fourth in the points table with four rounds completed – where he only scored in two of these – thus unsurprisingly the 2009 world champion is looking to up the ante and target consistency, starting with the forthcoming Spanish Grand Prix on 13 May in Barcelona. I don’t think it means you hold back going out for a win.” “You’re not going to hold back if there is a manoeuvre or a move to go for, but consistency is going to be very important this year. In your heart we’re all here to do one thing and that’s to be the first to cross the finishing ine, but if that’s not possible you’re there to pick up points,” added Button, winner of 13 grands prix.

for the record KIMI RAIKKONEN Why do you always wear a cap and sunglasses, even when there is no sun? Kimi Raikkonen: I like caps and I like sunglasses. I have very sensitive eyes so I have to protect them with the sunglasses. Have you ever got something special from your fans? KR: I receive a lot of gifts from fans… they can be really inventive and it makes me smile. They remember my birthday, they send their congratulations and their supporting slogans in Finnish. That’s something special, isn’t it? Why you don’t have a twitter account? KR: Well, I don’t really like Twitter… or Facebook. I prefer privacy. What will be your revenge against Sebastian Vettel after what he did on the podium? KR: Yeah I saw that, it was funny. The revenge will come soon enough, I hope! Getting on the first step of the podium would be a good start. Who’s better at badminton, you or Sebastian Vettel? KR: I keep on winning! It’s something like 100 to 0 so far… 86

for the record KIMI RAIKKONEN What is your favourite activity outside of Formula 1? KR: I like a lot of things… all kinds of sports and games where there is an element of competition. Ice Hockey is my current favourite while it’s still time for winter sports. What would you choose: a guaranteed 2nd place (which definitely brings you a Constructor’s Title) or a risky strategy with a 10% chance for 1st place? (Let’s say the race is taking place at Spa) KR: I think it’s more exciting if you have to battle and take some risks to obtain the top spot. I’m here to win! What situation makes you nervous on the race track? KR: If somebody is doing something really stupid. But luckily right now the grid is very talented! You’re always so calm and collected. How do you do manage that being involved in a sports that’s, to my mind, frequently tension-filled and highly stressful? KR: I just focus on racing and don’t let other things bother me. I have been in racing for two thirds of my life now; you just get used to being in this environment. 88

for the record KIMI RAIKKONEN Can you explain why you always perform so well at Spa? KR: I really like the track so I guess that helps. I’m looking forward to racing there again and hopefully come home with a good result for the team. What ice cream flavour do you like most? KR: [smiles] There is no specific flavour… vanilla, chocolate, strawberry the traditional Finnish ice cream flavour – whatever is available. How do you relax after a race? KR: I like to chill out with my close friends. Sometimes, I have a couple of my Finnish mates with me in the paddock and I like it a lot. It’s just nice to chat with them in Finnish, to think about something else than racing. What was your first car and what do you have in the garage these days? Have you still got the Enzo? KR: It was a Lada, a used one. I had good fun with it. I haven’t got the Enzo anymore but I have a nice Lotus Evora S, which is a really good compromise. 90

Do you think a hat trick (pole + win + fastest lap) could be possible in the E20? If so, at which circuit will it be? KR: That would be nice! After our performance in Bahrain, I know that we can do even better. The win was very, very close. We’ll have to see at which circuit that will be… but keep in mind, you don’t gain any extra points for poles and fastest lap times!

How do you improve on a lap by lap basis in a race? KR: With brand new tyres, you always go faster compared to used ones. Also, the car gets lighter and lighter in the race. While the new tyre drops off, there is no way you can improve your times after a few laps. Normally, you improve the time with the right timing of pits stops and then burning the fuel so the car gets lighter all the time to the Finish. 93

How would you know if you have done a perfect lap? KR: There is not a perfect lap, only in dreams. You can get a great lap without any mistakes, but you can always improve it, believe me!

FOR THE RECORD DANIEL RICCIARDO Sixth to 16th on the first lap does not make for good reading, as Ricciardo ackowledges, “It was a shame. It was frustrating. It was disappointing. It’s a race to forget but chances are I won’t do that very easily…” In fact Ricciardo, has has made it to the Toro Rosso race seat through Red Bull’s junior development programme, spent quite some time dwelling on where things went wrong that hot afternoon at Sakhir. He admitted on his team blog, “Do I now forget about it and brush it off as just one of those things? No, of course not. I’ll dwell on it.”

And added, “The first thing I did after the race was take a look at the data and watch a replay of the start. The good news is that the procedure wasn’t too bad. I’m usually fairly relaxed on the grid. As the start approaches, I’ll put some music on a couple of minutes before getting into the car, just to get the heart rate up a bit more, and I didn’t do anything I wouldn’t normally do in Bahrain.” “I actually felt pretty good as I got in, and the nerves weren’t playing up. I didn’t freeze up and make a mess of the procedure – it’s just that we struggled. It’s something I’ve got to figure out. I’ll think about it before the next race,” said Ricciardo.

D, BAD OR UGLY? ...

FEATURE PIRELLI For the first time in almost three decades, four different cars – McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull – have won the opening four races of the season, while others – Lotus and Sauber – have displayed potential winning pace. “The explanation is Pirelli – it’s the tyres,” Swiss commentator and former F1 driver Marc Surer told Servus TV. “It’s been a question of who can make them work, and that is depending on a number of factors.” Some cars, for example, require the tyres to be running hot and working hard before they deliver their pace, whilst others only find the ‘sweet spot’ in cold conditions. For most, however, it’s just a mystery. “We know we were slow (in Bahrain) but we don’t understand why,” revealed Melbourne winner Jenson Button. Publicly, teams like McLaren are hailing the invigorated ‘show’. Privately, they may be looking back ruefully on the Bridgestone era. “Bridgestone made great tyres that could hold on for the whole race,” Surer continued. “The only tension was when the two at the front were going to 106

FEATURE PIRELLI pit. Now, there is a stress factor that has been produced by the tyre company. Sometimes, maybe, it’s a bit too much.” Vitantonio Liuzzi, the former HRT driver, doesn’t agree with Surer’s final point, nor Michael Schumacher’s claim that Pirelli needs to rethink its approach to making F1 tyres. “The tyres are not blowing up, they are not blistering and it’s always a challenge for both drivers and engineers to set up the car properly and get the maximum out of them. “A tricky situation,” he told gocar.gr. “We have to give thumbs up to Pirelli for the work they have done.” It is on Liuzzi’s point about the situation being “tricky” that F1 team bosses completely agree about. “The challenge is how to use the tyres, how to set up your car,” said Mercedes’ Norbert Haug. Agreed Red Bull’s Christian Horner: “I think this year the tyre has dominated performance and I think it’s crucial to try and understand how they work.” “It’s clear,” Lotus’ Eric Boullier added, “that the key for performance is the tyres.” 108

REPORT PIRELLI “We haven’t spoken,” Hembery is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “I’ve just read something on the net about the tyres from his teammate Nico Rosberg which is very different.” Asked if Schumacher ’s criticism was irritating, he answered: “ We built the tyres the way we were asked to. The FIA, Bernie Ecclestone, even the teams wanted it this way. The spokesman for the teams at the time was Ross Brawn, Schumacher ’s team boss.” “ There have been four different winners in the four races so far, which alone shows that we must have done something right,” Hembery insisted. “As [an ordinary] fan I would be thrilled.” Asked if he can at least understand, seven times world champion, Schumacher’s frustration, he continued: “ The four winners this year have not won by chance. They were absolutely the best drivers in those races and all of them were faster than their teammates.” 114

REPORT PIRELLI “I can understand that Michael was frustrated at the last race. Among the four winners so far were two Germans, and then you had Kimi (Raikkonen), who in the fourth race of his comeback is on the podium,” said Hembery. “Racers are winners; they’re not happy unless they’re winning.” Hembery denied that tyres have, in 2012, become more important than the cars or drivers, “That’s a misconception,” he insisted. “ The driver has a huge impact.
