Sunday’s victory ended nearly eight years of waiting for the once-dominant ormer champions, whose last win came with another South American, Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, in Brazil in 2004. Last season was Williams’s worst in Formula One since the 1970s, with just five points all year, and it was our years since the team that won nine constructors’ crowns and seven drivers’ itles last appeared on the podium. They have, however, made a raft of changes and hauled themselves back nto mid-table respectability.

That list includes McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Lotus duo Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. It also includes Sauber’s Mexican Sergio Perez - second in Malaysia in a race he could have won - and like Maldonado representative of a rising generation of initially underrated Latin American talent.

“I truly haven’t got a clue,” said Williams of his team’s chances of winning more this year. “Everyone who didn’t win is seething out there. It was my first pole and first win and you can imagine what I am feeling.” The Venezuelan is the 104th driver to have won a grand prix, out of 735 drivers who have started F1 races. Alonso’s second place puts him joint first (with Sebastian Vettel) in the points standings. He reflected, “It was a fantastic start and it was close into Turn One, but we had the better side and we had the momentum to lead for the first part. But Williams anticipated the first stop better and as the race went on we lost grip and maybe some aero and in the end I was in the battle with Kimi for third. But we are back in front in the championship with plenty of possibilities.” Raikkonen commented, “I’m a bit disappointed. I expect to be a bit stronger in the race, especially at the beginning. At end of the race, we were good but it was too late. We were too slow at the start which is why we couldn’t fight for the win. We showed we still have the speed. Maybe we took the wrong choice in the first stop. I was not so disappointed during the race, but in the end, when you can catch them up almost 20 seconds, you have a disappointed feeling. If we had a few more laps, we could have fought for a victory. But that’s racing and it’s good points for the team.” Romain Grosjean survived a few altercations along the way, but failed to match the pace of his more experienced team mate, and crossed the line in a lonely fourth place. Kamui Kobayashi finished fifth, matching his best ever F1 finish, giving Sauber valuable points and beating some of the ‘grandee’ teams in the process.

They were always in the the thick of the action but simply lacked the pace to contest for a win and they leave Spain with crumbs. World champion Sebastian Vettel, was sixth after an eventful race, which saw him tussle with just about everyone outside the top four which was the highest he managed to run during the entire race and that was for one lap during the early pitstops. He also served a drive through for ignoring yellow flags, nevertheless he scored enough points to keep him top of the points table along with Alonso.

It’s fantastic for Williams but for us, it’s strange. Tyre management is an issue for us. I’m enjoying this season but scratching my head at the same time. It’s very strange.”

Hamilton gave a gutsy performance to finish eighth and would probably have been a contender for top spot on the podium had his team not let him down. “I am proud of myself and the team. We did a good job to come all the way from the back, we battled through and conserving the tyres was tough. Someone told me that I was only the person on a two stop, so I think that considering everyone keeps telling me that I am hard on tyres and how much smoother my team-mate is, I think that should show them. I just nursed them all the way through. I just cleared my mind and got on with it from the back of the grid. It was like being back in the karting days. Sometimes I would turn up with my dad and that is something that we would have to do,” reflected Hamilton. Teammate Jenson Button was simply not a contender this weekend. The Australian GP winner unable to find a suitable balance for his McLaren MP4-27 and ended up in ninth after an sub-standard race for the 2009 world champion. “I was just slow. Just out of the points, in 11th, was Mark Webber who had to change a front wing and fight his way through the field with little reward. “It was an interesting race. I don’t know where I got damage on my front wing but I had to pit for a new nose. When you’re out of position round here you have to look after your tyres and when you catch people, your tyres get killed. I was out of position whatever happened with the nose. If you push you have to pit. It’s a new way, it’s good for the fans if they like it, but it makes it more

challenging for us in different ways,” said Webber. It was another ‘nail in the coffin’ race for Felipe Massa who finished 15th but was again thoroughly shown up by his Ferrari teammate. The Schumacher-Senna incident was a case of one driver having plenty grip in his tyres (Schumacher) and the other nursing his tyres (Senna) – when Senna arrived at his braking zone going into Turn 1, it was about 20 metres before Schumacher even considered braking. The Williams moved to the left, hen jinked to the right, but by then it was way to late for the Mercedes driver to avoid it. At the end of the day it is likely to go down as a mistake by Schumacher, despite the circumstances.

At the end of the day, I was not expecting him to hit me, I thought he was going to dive for the inside. He probably misjudged me a little bit. He came with good speed on the straight and I had to brake. Most of the season has been thanks to a fresh group of people but it’s been very well balanced. The aero guys have done their stuff, more than their stuff. The Renault engine is very competitive. The car has got possibilities and our rate of development has to exceed that of the other eams. We’ll see.”

round 5, spanish grand prix FOR THE RECORD Team founder and principal Frank Williams, who is in a wheelchair, had been in the Circuit de Catalunya garage when it went up in flames but was wheeled to safety, his daughter Claire told Reuters. “We have four people in the medical centre at the moment receiving precautionary care and I believe one has been flown off to hospital but that has not been confirmed,” she said. Caterham, who have an adjacent garage to Williams, said in a statement that four of their staff had been taken to the circuit medical centre for examination – one with a minor hand injury and three with respiratory issues.

Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley said one of his staff had been taken to the medical centre and would remain under observation for an hour after suffering from smoke inhalation. The fire, with thick, acrid black smoke billowing out of the garage and across the paddock, started about 90 minutes after the end of the race won by Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado, when team members had gathered for a photograph in the pit lane before the fire started. Photographs showed Brazilian Bruno Senna’s car in the middle of a gutted and charred garage. Maldonado’s had been parked elsewhere under post-race parc ferme rules.

Team officials and guests were ushered to safety and the area cordoned off. A medical helicopter was seen to take off later. Maldonado’s victory, from pole position, was the first of his career. The fire was the second in the Formula One paddock in five races this season, with one breaking out in the Lotus hospitality area at the Malaysian circuit in March. In a statement, Williams also applauded rival teams for their selfless support during the life threatening incident, “Everyone at Williams F1 is extremely relieved that this event was contained as quickly as it was and the damage which occurred was, relatively speaking, limited in its nature.” “While the incident was unexpected and definitely most undesirable, it has demonstrated the genuine cohesiveness, camaraderie and spirit of co-operation that exists within the Formula One paddock. The astonishing response from the teams and other paddock personnel was immediate, unconditional and overwhelming.” “I was pleased to welcome back to the factory the majority of our team this morning. One of our people remains in Spain for further medical

Pastor Maldonado: I think it’s a wonderful day, not just for me but for all the team. We have been pushing so hard since last year to try to improve race by race and here we are. Yesterday we were here after a great qualifying and we did it again in the race. It was a tough race because the strategy as well, it was tough especially because of the rear tyres – after a couple of laps we were struggling with [them]. I need to say I’m pretty happy because the car was so competitive since the first lap. Fernando did a better start than me but I was just following the pace and it was so great. It’s my first podium and my first victory and you can imagine what I feel. The first Williams win since 2004. They managed to get you to jump Fernando at the second round of pit stops but he gave you some real pressure at the end? PM: Yeah, it was so close. We were looking to manage the tyre degradation so I wasn’t pushing that hard, just to keep the tyres alive for the end of the race and Fernando got too close. There were some moments that he was so close, especially at the end of the straight. But I was managing the gap and controlling everything. I think our pace was pretty strong and the car looks fantastic. Even the team. We did a small mistake at the last pit stop but it doesn’t affect our performance.

PM: When Fernando got close I was looking after the tyres, I didn’t push that much, just because the big tyre degradation. You were in the same team last season. When you finished the season you were in front of only three teams: Marussia, Hispania and Caterham, and now you are in front of all of them; what has happened to explain such a change in performance from one season to another? PM: We made big changes in the factory, we have new staff in some of the departments and completely changed the approach to building the car. I need to say that this year’s car has great performance, great potential to become even stronger than it is and for sure, this is great for motivation, to motivate the team, the factory, to keep pushing like that. I think this is the way. We are motivated and we need to keep pushing.

Fernando Alonso: Yeah, it was a fantastic start again. The team prepared quite nice again the clutch and everything – the procedure to do a good start. It was close on the straight until Turn One with Pastor, and then we had the better side, the inside. We took the momentum there and we led the race for the first part but then William’s anticipated the stop and get in front and at the end it was close. We had a newer tyre than Pastor and we tried a couple of times but it was not possible out of the last corner. Then in the very last laps I felt the car was strange, we lost a lot of grip. Maybe we lost some aerodynamic part or something because we were very slow… (inaudible) …we were lucky at the end. Second place at home feels fantastic and thanks to the people that came here and the people at home and hopefully a step forward in terms of championship possibilities. Describe your feelings at the second stop when Pastor jumped you because you were caught up behind a backmarker in that critical lap weren’t you? FA: Yeah, we were a little bit unlucky maybe. We had a Marussia but I think he got a penalty at the end. Obviously, it’s not a solution now but hopefully people start to understand that they need to respect the rules and again they didn’t and they paid the penalty. It’s more of a penalty the penalty we paid – maybe the race win – but yeah a little bit disappointed. But they [Williams] did a great job and they had the pace, because in the last stint, if we were faster than the Williams we had the opportunity to overtake but they were quicker than us so thy deserve the victory.

round 5, spanish grand prix FERNANDO ALONSO interview You got so close, right up there, and then it just went away I guess, and then by the end it looked as though you really were struggling on the tyres. FA: Yeah, it was close with ten laps to go, ten laps to the end. We were attacking Pastor when we were closing to within one second but then the last seven or eight laps we lost the grip, around Turn Seven I felt. I informed the team some corners after, in Turn Nine, to check if everything is OK because maybe we lost some aerodynamic part of the front wing or under the floor or something because we had no more grip at all. So, from that point the last seven laps, it was monitoring the distance and the gap with Kimi. We knew it was a very long last seven laps. At the end it was close. I think one lap more and Kimi overtake us. So we were lucky at the end and happy – happy with the weekend in general, not only with the race, because we had a very strong weekend, on Fridays with good practice, the car felt more or less competitive yesterday. I think we extract everything from the car again, maximise the potential of what we have in our hands and the start was great, the race pace was good, at one point we were lapping one Red Bull in front of us with the blue flags, so… it’s very strange. We were 57 seconds behind Vettel in Bahrain, and we were lapping Webber here. No one understands probably. Not us either.

After the first five races, and all the problems you’re supposed to have in your points than you have now. How much more confident are you than you were o were you expecting this? FA: No, I am a definitely surprised by the quantity of points that we have; I’m a bi weekend’s results. We were confident of improving the car, we were hoping for s here in Barcelona. As I said, in Bahrain, we were nearly out of Q3 and then in the leaders, so we arrived in Barcelona with some hope, some optimism about the u the result, the overall weekend pace has been a little bit better than expected, b quick in qualifying and quick in the race but this, in my opinion or how I feel afte I still don’t know where we are. I think we need to wait for more races, for the championship to stabilise a little bit because I think we maybe over-performed a little bit compared with the potential we have and maybe some other teams under-performed or they had some problems to get their tyres working or something, because, as I said, some of the results that we saw this weekend feel very strange.

I thought I would get the chance to overtake outside both of the first two but I didn’t have enough speed in a straight line – I actually hit the limiter I think in fifth gear which kind of stopped my acceleration a bit but after that I didn’t have the speed to hang on and hound them. I was pulling away from the guys behind me but I couldn’t stay. The first stint was pretty OK but the second, I chose the soft tyre and I didn’t have the speed to keep up with them. I’m a bit disappointed but I just tried to fight and then we changed the tyres and it seemed to turn out to be pretty good but we were just too far away. We need, like, ten more laps and then I think we could have been fighting for the win. Absolute charge at the end, your tyres were OK? KR: Yes, it was OK. I had two new sets of Prime but unfortunately I didn’t have more sets of Prime anyhow to put in the first pitstop. The car was very good but just a bit too late for me. We fall off too much in the last stint to be able to fight for the win. But one more lap we could probably could have got Fernando – but it’s easy to say after.

KR: The fact is the reason why I’m disappointed is because in the end if we have done everything right, we could have put ourselves into first place. The car has been fast enough but we’ve been doing small things not correctly and I’ve done some mistakes on my side but if everything was 100 percent OK we could have won. There’s no issue with the speed of the car, but it’s so close between all the teams and drivers that if you have a small problem or a small issue during the weekend then it’s going to cost you a lot. If you’re three tenths behind then you’re suddenly not in the last qualifying. As you give yourself the chance to be fighting at the front, I think our car can do it but everything has to fall in the right place to be able to win.

Did you believe that Pastor could be your main rival in Spain, and if not, how big a surprise is it? KR: Williams have been quite fast for two races in certain points and I think, as we’ve said before, it’s very difficult to say who is really the quickest overall because at one race one team is there and then suddenly they are tenth in the next race, so it’s bit of an odd situation where we are this year, but it gives a lot of chances for all the teams who have the speed and when the tyres are working for them they are much better than the others. The tyres seem to be the key thing. If you get them working well you seem to be fast. Sometimes you just drop out of the window a little bit and you have a hard time.

“This second place feels like a victory. Having finished the race in Sakhir almost a minute off the winner, today we overtook one of the two Red Bulls and we fought right to the very end for the win. On top of that, we have made up a lot of points on the Red Bull and the McLaren drivers, which makes the outcome of this weekend even more positive. At the end of the second stint of the race came the key moment: maybe Maldonaldo pitted a bit early and we stayed out on track, but we lost time behind a backmarker for a whole lap, partly because there was a yellow flag on the last part of the main straight. Honestly, I don’t think I did anything wrong and I believe it is better to look into the detail of what happened, because I was in the middle of a group of cars and I definitely did not try to overtake anyone. Hamilton appeared to have clinched McLaren’s 150th pole position in the dying seconds of Q3, displacing provisional front-of-grid driver Pastor Maldonado, but was almost immediately told by his team to pull over and stop his car. stewards to explain why he had not been able to return his car to the pits under ts own power as prescribed in article 6.6.2 of the FIA’s Technical Regulations. According to an FIA statement: “The stewards heard from the team epresentative Mr Sam Michael [Sporting Director], who stated that the car stopped on the circuit for reasons of force majeure. A team member had put an nsufficient quantity of fuel into the car thereby resulting in the car having to be stopped on the circuit in order to be able to provide the required amount [of uel] for sampling purposes.”

They then ruled that the team had breached article 6.6.2 and excluded Hamilton from the qualifying result. Hamilton was allowed to start but from the back of the grid. The penalty meant that Pastor Maldonado would take pole position for Spanish Grand Prix. It was the Venezuelan’s first in F1, it also marked Williams’ first pole position since the Brazilian GP of 2010, claimed by Nico Hulkenberg. Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari was thus promoted to the front row, the Spaniard starting his home race from second on the grid. Hamilton said afterwards, “This is such a disappointment. Today’s qualifying session was one of the best I’ve ever driven – the whole car was just rolling so smoothly – it felt fantastic. The team had done a fantastic job to bring the updates here this weekend – so I want to say a huge thank-you to all the men and women at the MTC for working day and night to get all the new components here this weekend. “But, on my slowing-down lap, my engineers told me to stop on the track, and I didn’t know why. Later, to hear that I’d been excluded from qualifying, was of course extremely disappointing. “But, now, looking ahead, I think it’s clear that it’s going to be an incredibly tough race for us. Even so, as always, I’ll never give up and I’ll give it everything I’ve got. It would mean so much to me to get a good result here in Spain: it’s such a pleasure to come here and the support I get is amazing. “As I always say, and as I always do, whatever

His evolution into a strong competitor, deserving respect is complete. He said afterwards, “We have been working so hard trying to understand these tyres and to develop our car around these tyres, we did a very good step forward for this race. There is a great atmosphere in the factory and team. The car looks fantastic especially in terms of race pace.” It was also a timely 70th birthday present for team principal Frank Williams who was in his team’s pit garage in Barcelona to witness Maldonado’s feat. The pressure on Ferrari to perform has been huge and Alonso showed why he is regarded as one of the best drivers of his generation as he muscled the cumbersome Ferrari F2012 to third on the grid in front of his adoring home crowd. The Spaniard continues to be a crucial galvanising factor in the Maranello camp with performances which surprise even himself. “For us, it was impossible to dream about being in the top three in the first four races, so it is definitely a step forward. We did a step forward, I don’t know how much because I think P3 [which became P2] is overperforming. I was really happy with the lap, it was perfect, I could fit 100 more sets of tyres and not do better,” admitted Alonso.

round 5, SPANISH grand prix qualifying report The Lotus pair have looked strong all weekend, make that all year, and this time around Romain Grosjean ended the session fourth fastest, with Kimi Raikkonen set to head up the third row of the grid in fifth. The team would probably have been hoping for a better grid position, considering their pace in practice, they will nevertheless be strong podium contenders as their race pace is at the top end of the spectrum. Grosjean said at the end of the session, “It was a good performance from the team, especially as I didn’t run in FP3 because of a fuel pressure problem. For the set-up we went from what we’d found out yesterday and it worked pretty well. Everyone did a good job to get the car ready for qualifying after the problems of the morning. We can be happy with what we have achieved.” Raikkonen commented, “I think we had a good chance to finish in the top three but we had a problem with the set-up. We’ll see how it goes in the race. There are a lot of small details which will decide who is on the top but we have a good car.” Sauber have looked strong all weekend and both Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez made it into Q3, but Kobayashi’s C31 came to halt on his slow down lap at the end of Q2 and his qualifying session was over. Kobayashi, who will start tenth, lamented, “I had an oil leak, which is really a shame. I had to stop and I did not drive in Q3. I had a good chance to qualify in the top five but we are confident on our long run in the race.”

Much was expected from the world champion Red Bull team after their impressive showing in the morning’s free practice session, but Vettel and Mark Webber will start further down the grid than they have in quite some time. In Q3 Vettel’s first lap was slow on purpose, then he had a a half hearted stab at a fast lap which he aborted before crossing the line, while Webber failed to make it beyond Q2 and will start from twelfth.

Vettel explained, “There is nothing is wrong. We decided to abort the lap to have a free choice of tyres for the race. If I had set a lap, we would have to start the race on soft tyres. In Q2, the first run was crucial. I didn’t manage to pull a lap out so I had to use my final set of tyres to get into Q3. We simply weren’t quick enough. We’ll see how it goes for tomorrow. “The first lap in Q2 was very competitive but it lulled us into a false sense of security so we parked up the car. The times kept coming and I realised that t was going to be tight with about 50 seconds to go but it was too late by hen, you are committed to a strategy.� In a quirky twist of fate the teammates of the top trio were comparatively way down the order: Jenson Button failing to make it into Q2 and will start 11th; Bruno Senna spun out in Q1 during his flying lap and will start 18th and Felipe Massa will start 17th after failing yet again (five times this year) to progress beyond Q2.

Button, whose pace setting car from a day earlier, was simply not the same machine on qualifying, tried to explain, “I don’t know where it went wrong. All day I’ve struggled with balance. Showing a good turn of speed, in the wake of some major upgrades first scene at Mugello, was Kamui Kobayashi in the Sauber C31 who was fast hroughout the session and racking up 28 laps in the process.

Neither of the McLaren drivers ran the higher nose version of the McLaren MP4-27, which was expected to make an appearance in Spain. They

did however run an element on the nose which perhaps was gauging the drivers view from the cockpit. Either way speculation is rife that the raised nose is part of a comprehensive front end over haul which the team will only release at the very last possible moment, hence keep their rivals guessing and photographers hovering around their pit garage.

Meanwhile pitstop practice was very much in evidence in the McLaren pit b equipment as the team seek to streamline their wheel changing work after some Valtteri Bottas was one of a number of reserve drivers doing duty, the Finn repla and impressing with the fifth fastest time in the Williams FW34. Michael Schumacher only did 15 laps, ending sixth fastest with his team mate Ni Rosberg half a second slower in 14th. Much is expected of the Lotus team this weekend, in the wake of their pace setting Mugello test, But with Romain Grosjean seventh and Kimi Raikkonen ninth it appears that duo have yet to be unleashed in anger. Grosjean spent most of the session watching his car being worked on and thus only completed 16 laps while Raikkonen racked up 29 laps – more than any other driver in the session. Rounding out the top ten was Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India VJM04. Apart from Bottas, other reserve drivers in action were: Jules Bianchi for Force India (18th), Alexander Rossi for Caterham (21st) and Dani Clos for HRT (24th).

Ferrari appeared to lack the pace to mix it at the front despite a host of highly publicised updates to their cursed F2012. Again a Ferrari powered Sauber was faster than the pedigreed offering from Maranello. At the front, with a set of soft option tyres bolted on Button powered around the Circuit de Catalunya in 1 minute 23.399 seconds, after overcoming a bout of understeer on the McLaren MP4-27 early on in the session. A few setup tweaks by his crew appeared to have sorted it out for the Englishman who won the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix. Second fastest was Bahrain GP winner Sebastian Vettel again showing

strong pace and consistency in the Red Bull and only 0.164 seconds off Button’s best. Up next, third quickest, was Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton fourth fastest in the McLaren, suggesting that the Mercedes powered cars are intent on reversing the trouncing they received in Bahrain from their Renault powered rivals. Lotus duo Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean were fifth and sixth respectively, with the top six covered by half a second – it was very, very close at the top.


round 5, SPANISH grand prix FREE PRACTICE 2 REPORT An hour into proceedings Mark Webber got it all wrong on the exit of Turn 4, flying across the gravel before rejoining the track in his Red Bull RB8. The Australian ended the session seventh on the timing sheets and half a second down on his team mate. Michael Schumacher was eighth after an inconspicuous session for the six times Spanish Grand Prix winner. Kamui Kobayashi was fastest of the Ferrari powered posse, ending the session ninth after setting hearts fluttering with an off in the Turn 14 and Turn 15 kink late on in the session. No harm done. Hamilton and Bruno Senna also had close calls around the same time, at the exact same place, as drivers pushed the limit in the final moments of practice.

Rounding out the top ten was Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg who was also the last driver within a second of the fastest time set by Button. Out of the top ten were the Ferrari pair of Felipe Massa (11th) and Fernando Alonso (14th) which indicated that the Italian squad had not found any extra pace compared to their rivals or they were playing one hell of a good game of bluff. Ferrari fans would be hoping the latter. Special mention has to be made about Narain Karthikeyan’s wretched day, after being forced to sit out the morning practice as Dani Close did duty for HRT. Thereafter the Indian driver’s car was plagued by an electrical problem that lost him an hour of track time. And when the 112 eventually did get out on track it was only until Turn 3…

round 5, SPANISH grand prix FREE PRACTICE 3 REPORT Vettel left it until the very end of the session, to pop in a 1 minute 23.168 seconds – the best lap of the weekend, until then, around the Circuit de Catalunya in hotter than normal conditions for this time of the year in Barcelona. Showing a good turn of speed on the soft tyres was Pastor Maldonado who ended second fastest in the Williams FW34, but teammate Bruno Senna failed to match the pace set by the Venezuelan by a whopping one second – ending the session 14th. The surprise package was Sauber who topped the timing screens 1-2 with a few minutes to go. Both Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez quick and comfortable in the Ferrari powered C31. Kobayashi was third fastest and Perez fifth.

Again out paced by one of their customers, Ferrari’s best was Fernando Alonso in the F2012 who ended the session sixth quickest with teammate Felipe Massa about half a second slower, down in 11th. The last time a Ferrari started from pole position was with Alonso at the 2010 Singapore Grand Prix. Rookie Jean-Eric Vergne, another one to shake up the form book, was seventh fastest in the Toro Rosso also ending the hour session half a second up on his teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

Raikkonen ending the session ninth while teammate Romain Grosjean did two imed laps in his E20 before it spluttered to a halt with an electrical problem. He did not take part again. Like McLaren, the Enstone boys found themselves on he back-foot after starting the weekend strongly just 24 hours earlier. Nico Rosberg was tenth in his Mercedes, he was also the last driver within one second of Vettel’s best. Team mate Michael Schumacher was 17th.
