Dramatic vistas, comical poses and small, intimate moments were represented in submissions by 63 different photographers. Our Jefferson County seniors love to snap pictures of their adventures, big and small. Carole Allen, 54, of High Ridge won this year’s grand prize of $200 when her photo was drawn at random from among all entries. “Holy crap – no way! I was not expecting this,” was her excited response to the news of her win. Allen said she is a longtime amateur photographer and loves to take a lot of pictures on trips with her husband, John. “He is very patient with me,” she said with a laugh. “He knows I’m always going to be four or five steps behind him, snapping away.” Her winning entry was taken during the couple’s 2015 trip to the Canadian Rockies, and shows Maligne Lake in Jasper, Alberta. “We were at the lake just as the afternoon sun calmed the water and the

Serene scene wins $200 for High Ridge photographer By Laura Marlow For the Leader

arole Allen, 54, of High Ridge won the grand prize of $200 in the annual “Way to Go” photography contest sponsored by Times, Leader PublicaGrand Times tions’ magazine for seniors. Her photo was selected at random from among more than 100 entries from 63 different photographers. The lucky shot was taken during a May 2015 trip to Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada, about 400 miles northeast of Seattle. It depicts Maligne Lake, just outside the little

C

town of Jasper, on a sunny afternoon. Allen and her husband, John, always travel in the spring. “We always have to go in May, because that’s when he can get off work,” she said. “But it works out, because his birthday is May 4 and our anniversary is May 27. So whenever we go, we say we’re celebrating those.” No matter the destination, Allen said she always has her camera ready. “There are so many pictures of me with my camera in my hand,” she said with a laugh. “It’s like an appendage.” She said she does get some good photos with the camera in her phone, but

she prefers to rely on her trusty Pentax. “I like the idea of taking them with my camera,” she said. “My husband teases me, because I don’t have a lot of confidence. I know there are other people out there with a lot more talent than me. But I just really love it.” The Allens chose Jasper on a whim, but they fell in love with its unspoiled beauty. “I saw a photo of Lake Louise, and I told John, ‘Oh, we have to go there,’” Allen said. “It turns out, he had always wanted to see the Canadian Rockies, too.” So she set to work at one of her favorite pastimes. “If I could be a travel agent in a next life, I would. I love to plan vacations,” she said. “I did all the research and planned it all, and we had a wonderful time. It was beautiful weather the whole time.” They enjoyed it so much, in fact, they returned a year later, in May 2016.

“But, you know, that time, the weather was exactly the opposite,” Allen says. “It was cool and cloudy. I got some good shots, but nothing like this one.” Allen said her prize money will go into her travel fund. She and her husband are planning a trip to Utah in six weeks. “We’re flying into Las Vegas, then we’ll drive down and see Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion (national parks),” she said. “We’re really looking forward to it.” They’re also saving for a 2020 trip back to Jasper, a gift for the oldest of their three grandchildren. “When our granddaughter, Brianna, graduates from Northwest High School, we are taking her and a friend there for a graduation trip,” Allen said. The other grandchildren are 8 and 1. “It’s a good thing they’re so spread out in age,” Allen said with a laugh. “It’ll give us time to save for their trips, too.”

Wonderful time, and lots of precious memories were made on each visit.”

Don’t mind us; we’re just tourists Katie Stamm, 55, of Fenton took this photo with her phone camera during a memorable vacation to Cozumel, Mexico, in February. “I traveled there with some close neighbors and had one of the best experiences ever in all of my many travels,” she says. “On that morning, we decided to get up very early to catch the sunrise on the east coast of the island, and I am so happy we did. A couple of gun-toting Army guys came strolling down the beach just as I decided to catch some of the first rays of a gorgeous sunrise. Happily for us, they just kept walking on down the beach and didn’t stop to chat.”

St. Francis reflection Peggy Haberberger, 67, of Imperial took this photo during a vacation to Italy in 2010. “This was a trip to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary,” says her husband, George. “The photo is of the St. Francis Cathedral in Assisi, reflected in a window framed by vines of a restaurant across the street.”

Wildlife view

Above the fruited plain Colleen Thompson of Imperial took this picture in May 2016 atop Pike’s Peak in Colorado, following a cog railway ride above the clouds.

Sheila Michael, 60, of Barnhart took this picture during a vacation in Costa Rica. “We stayed in this treehouse near a small town as we headed north to the Arenal Volcano,” she says. “We sat on the deck in the dark, looking for wildlife in the jungle below. That night, we saw things we could not identify; but the next morning we were awakened to the sound of something we knew – howler monkeys. After that, we saw monkeys everywhere!”

Street scene During a visit to some life-long friends in Germany, Linda Bone of Arnold was treated to a memorable road trip in 2011. “We spent a couple of days in Lugano, Switzerland; then in Lake Como, Italy; then in St. Moritz,” she says. “The grand finale was Milan, Italy. I am blessed!” She snapped this view of a busy street in Milan, complete with a clown selling balloon animals on the corner. “It was a gorgeous view and an amazing city,” she says.

Virginia and Tim Rice of De Soto were fishing on Bull Shoals Lake early in the morning on Nov. 3, 2016, when Virginia, 71, was distracted by the beautiful sunrise. Luckily, she had her camera close at hand to capture this shot.

Wide open spaces Pat Scroggins, 58, of Festus took this picture while visiting Canyonlands National Park in Utah on May 17, 2016. “My wife, Kelly Scroggins, is in the left corner of the picture,” he says.

Lonely lighthouse

Romance Robert Banes, 65, of Arnold said after enduring a couple of years of financial hard times, he and his wife, Rachel, celebrated their improved circumstances with a trip to Michigan in September 2014. Rachel snapped this picture at a lighthouse in South Haven. “Of all the memorable places we saw around the state of Michigan, watching the sun set at this beach park along Lake Michigan and the lighthouse was the most romantic,” he says.

Taking it all in Patricia Rimkus, 62, of De Soto and her husband, Tom Van Dyke, took their “dream vacation’ to Alaska in July 2013. “While taking an excursion in Juneau, I was able to capture another excursion boat, along with two orca whales surfacing,” she says.

Karen Hanson, 51, of House Springs took this picture of a lighthouse just off Paradise Island in the Bahamas in November 2016, during a 25thanniversary cruise with her husband, Greg. Their two daughters, Nicole, 20, and Katelyn, 14, went along on the trip. “You can see the Atlantis Resort, there in the background,” Hanson says. “We had gone there for the day and were just leaving. We didn’t even know the lighthouse was there until we were right up on it.”

Gator done! Joyce Shepherd, 69, of De Soto snapped this picture of her granddaughter, Sarah Downs of Hillsboro, holding a baby alligator during an air boat ride, part of a June 2016 trip to New Orleans.

Handouts? Lorraine Sartori, 66, of High Ridge was in Gulf Shores, Ala., with her husband in 2015 when they watched an unlikely friendship between man and bird. “We witnessed (the fisherman) catch several large fish. Before long, this amazing heron visited and waited for the man to feed him some bait. It was so fascinating to watch.”

Snowbirds Lisa Cross, 59, of Festus took this picture, one of many beautiful Gulf sunsets she and her husband, Dave, experienced during their January visit to Orange Beach in Alabama. “This trip is special to us because it was our first ‘snowbird’ vacation after our retirements in 2016,” she says.
