This past summer, I joined colleagues from girls’ schools from across the nation in celebrating 20 years of work by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools. I raised a glass and toasted progress, but I also asked the question, “How much more work is left to be done?” Has our campaign to empower young women been successful?

A 21st Century Leader The full empowerment of our students requires a complex curriculum, one that highlights 21st century skills that will prepare them for present and future success in areas such as: • Critical thinking and problem solving

While our school is young, it is wise beyond its years. Founded in 2001, we were fully accredited by the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS) in 2008. Today, we are a thought leader in girls’ education both regionally and nationally. Our leadership is rooted in our innovative approach to teaching and learning and in our willingness to advocate for the middle years – the middle really does matter. Finally, our commitment to redefining rigor and making certain we prepare students for their future and not our past speaks to our continued commitment to our empowerment campaign.

While more women than men are entering colleges and universities, research from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) suggests men “out-perform” women in many areas – especially in the sciences and in technology. Evidence suggests issues of confidence rather than issues of competence as the reason for the disparity. Women also must create space for themselves in many male dominated fields. Where are the allies? Male engagement in ending sexism is needed now more than ever. My first year as Head of School has affirmed the need for all of us to work in concert. I feel very fortunate to be part of a community that recognizes this need and works toward short-term as well as long-term solutions as we seek to empower our students.

Design of TradeCraft logo, Tech-data sheets and various concrete bag packaging. These products were a subsidiary under the Pakmix pro-line company. I was then hired to re-design the Pakmix logo as well as numerous product labels, tech-data sheets and concrete bags.

As a shameless self promotion, each year pretending to be a not so obsessed Martha Stewart, I create a new product to be doled out among the deserving. I concoct, design, illustrate and package.
