+ An In-between Position to be Defined + Nowadays, architecture, as the thinking model to critically perceive the real world across various scales, the emotional model intertwined with sensibility and rationality, and the space model between ambiguity and certainty, is essentially a methodology to reach the “in-between balance point. Architects consequentially become the ones who need to define it. My name is Junfei Pei. I am one of these architects.

The enormous central park is an emblematic urban fabric break space in Manhattan, is the most visited park in the US. People come here to enjoy the dramatic differences from its surroundings on a city scale. Meanwhile, we try to form a flexible space to let people have a special experience which is different from the meadow and trees circumstance, by utilizing kinetic joints and extended tensile material in the center. In this way, the book studio centerpiece will be able to fold to adapt multiple space uses by creating steps, seating, ramps, and canopies.

Refugee Crisis & A Neutral Site That Between ‘Asylum’ and ‘Home’
OLD
In 2015, the worsening of the Syrian war has expelled Millions of People out of their home country. In search of a dignified life in piece and freedom many are fighting their way to Europe risking death, capture and deportation. This migration of Peoples is a crucial test for the European Union. At the moment the Lageso/Bundesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales, where the refugees have to register themselves first is completely overloaded. In September 15 more than 3000 people daily were waiting outside the building, some of them are camping out for more than 18 days just to keep their place in line. Also the BAMF/Bundesamt fuer Migration und Flüchtlinge, where they can then apply for asylum is not looking better. This overload but also the architecture of those buildings (long and dark corridors connecting tiny cell like offices) create an atmosphere of depression, frustration and even despair for the applicants but also for the people working there.

The new house of welcome will be a truly public building, rendering services in its deepest meaning. The site is relatively neutral: the site in central location illustrates the value of cultural diversity for the urban development and gives the integration model a visible sign in the urban space. It should connect to the city and even more become a natural part of it. It should be a building that Berliners can be proud of.
public transportation
Berlin has always been a heterogeneous patchwork of various districts and neighborhoods. There is no real city center. The site is located in the east of Alexanderplatz, close to various public transport stations (U-bahn, S-bahn and M). The site locates in between historical old town boundary and housing projects developed by former USSR, which means total different architectural context and typology around. No adjacent buildings in context, which itself is an open attitude as well.

The city of Berlin is not only the capital of Germany but also its vibrant cultural center. Plus, one of the most urgent political and social question of today’s society is Migration, therefore, with the increased number of refugees and security risks, the government efficiency getting became lower and lower. A much-needed house of welcome in city center is need be designed: It is among other public amenities providing rooms that can be rented by governmental services upon need. It also is a place of information about all the possibilities that the new arrivals have. It should be their first starting point. It should not only provide new capacities but be a welcome sign. It should give the people orientation and a first place to turn to. It is not only for refugees and those seeking asylum but be for all people that come to Berlin and want to stay, also those applying for citizenship, students and temporary visitor.

SITE ANALYSIS
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
WHY TRIANGLE IN SUCH CONTEXT?
T
he site is located in the heart of Copenhagen, close to Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Tivoli Garden and Christiansborg Palace. Respect to the city scale context, I try to ensure that the axis of the of between the Christiansborg Palace and the railway station will not be blocked; on the other hand, the block scale, in order to maintain the original publicness of the square and provide enough public space for the conference hall, I firstly create skin-in “square”, redefining the public character of Dantes Plads, rather than blindly occupying the site. Another clue comes from Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The landmark classical facade of this historical building is facing the new conference hall on the south side of the street. This classic building also has a central axis, which I will exploit to extend the axis as the central axis of my proposal.
CITY SECTION
Thus, the volume of the triangle was born from these site considerations on different scales. A huge triangular mass extruding out of the sinking “square” formed a “shell”. I wanted to keep the “shell” as transparent as it can, creating a feeling of openness; meanwhile, I hoped that the glass would not be so conspicuous in the neighboring classic style buildings. I solved this contradiction through the details of an inward zigzag facade: at certain angles, you wouldn’t see large areas of glass and their reflections, but arrayed pillars which are similar to the nearby building scale. But once you approach and enter the building, the sun light will spare no effort to spread it through the glass from façade and skylight.

hen, the sharp corners of the triangle will be used as exhibition space. This is a three-story space, whose corner is facing the national museum and the Christiansborg palace. People always have the opportunity to meet with famous historical buildings by any chances, as if those historical buildings in the city were at the exhibition as well. With a slowly rising ramp, you can enter the top floor of the exhibition hall, where you will have chance to access to roof deck. The rest of the triangle is occupied by the auditorium space. But these spaces are not filling the shells, but form “the space in the shell, floating in, leaving gaps as corridor outside the auditorium to links all the rest spaces.

REBUILD WETLAND
Alder River Area
A RESILIENT WETLAND PARK IN QIMU BACHELOR THESIS DESIGN SITE: QI MU, CHENG DU, CHINA TEAM: WITH HANXUE ZHAO
A more than 60 hectares farm land is requiring a park of ecological protection, ecological education and cultural recreation. The project focuses on the safety of the river and satisfies the flood control requirements. It is required to further satisfy the natural self-sufficiency, keep the river shape, reduce the destruction of the natural environment, reflect the sustainability of the river ecology, and improve the biological reproduction of the native species. Therefore, rebuild wetland from existing farm land is the solution here aside Alder River. It is aimed to create a regional natural and cultural landscape, to provide science education platform, also to promote the sustainable development of urban and rural environment.

Beside the White town adjacent to Chongqing Road, a series of attractions in this tourist routes bring a certain number of cultural highlights, but the most popular traditional natural settlement form -LinPan- is under demolition. This is an opportunities to offer such traditional landscape/architecture experience in park as gathering/service space for people’s recall of rural traditions. While other traditional historical and cultural activities will be provided as well.

After the site investigation, first thing can be found is that the field pattern is simple and the vegetation type is not diverse, which is unfavorable to the restoration of wetland. The soil nutrient is beneficial to the improvement of vegetation, but it also has some problems of eutrophication for wetland reconstruction. Second, the current water area shows narrow surface. The overall width of the Alder River is less than ten meters, although the high degree of bending but the constant width means no large area of open water to slow down for the formation of wetland habitat. And the poor water quality due to domestic and agricultural sewage still affects the ground.

Master Plan
he design of a wetland park focus into the following three aspects: the first is to regard it as a wetland generator, to restore and shape the wetland habitat; the second, as a water source filter, for cleaning water in the wetland park in a natural or artificial way of filtration and purification; thirdly, as a urban infrastructure. “Green belt form can be used as a demonstration to the surroundings, as a recreational infrastructure, thus weakening the traditional concept of an isolated park. Finally this wetland park will be enlarged and extended with the surrounding cities and turned to become a cityscale greening system.

Reshape Water System By extending narrow water body to a open water gathering pond, enlarging the total area of water, creating different flow speed for different wetland species and making more natural shape connections.
36 |
Resilient Transition Sallow mud flats, shoals, marshes, ponds, lakes, riverbanks...All of them can be a transition part from ground to water, which is so-called wetland here. However, the wetland is not only a geological transition, but a segment of mixture of ecological system at both ground and water. Acknowledging that, we can forge wide enough spaces for this transition in natural or artificial ways.
