THE parents of Muhamad Asyraf Haziq dearly want their son home and safe despite the 20-year-old saying he will stay and complete his studies in the United Kingdom despite breaking his jaw after being waylaid in the London riots on Monday. “Within just a month of him being there, he has been made to suffer. He had to go through this ordeal alone with no family members by his side,” said the father, Rossli Harun, a 49-year-old build-

We want him to complete his studies here, but I know at the end of the day, I would leave the decision to him. And we will respect whatever decision he makes,” said Rossli.

Relating the story of how they first learned of their son’s attack almost a week ago, Maznah Abu Mansor, 47, said she received a call from MARA headquarters informing her that Asyraf had been assaulted. “My heart dropped. I freaked out. I kept on asking the caller if Acap was fine and his whereabouts.” She said she was told her son had been hospitalised. • Continued on pg2

THE parents of Muhamad Asyraf Haziq Rossli have condemned the media, both local and foreign, for the handling of news reports on their son's attack in the UK. SUPPORT has been pouring in from well-wishers offering to donate money and goods to Muhamad Asyraf Haziq Rossli, the 20-year-old Malaysian student who was robbed in broad daylight by a gang in the London riots last Sunday, after a website had been set up dedicated to him. Entitled "Let's Do Something Nice For Ashraf Haziq" (somethingniceforashraf.tumblr. com), it was created by sympathetic Londoners on the same day he was mugged. "I and thousands of other British people are disgusted this happened in our country and want to do something nice for Ashraf to show to him and his country only a tiny minority of us are scumbags," the website's creator announced on the main page. A contributor called "The Moodster" offered his personal PlayStation Portable console to Muhamad Asyraf. "I've got a PSP I don't use and Asyraf can have it if he would like. How can I get it to him?" Large private companies were also offering to buy back his belongings that were stolen during the assault. A marketing manager from Big Fish Folding Bike offered Muhamad Asyraf a bicycle as he plans to remain in Britain despite his horrific ordeal. Muhamad Asyraf related to The Sun UK that he may be "mugged, beaten but not broken".

"There's also no provision under Mara for emergencies for the parents to fly there to check on their children," said Rossli. The parents said they would

lodge a police report on behalf of Muhamad Asyraf when they arrive in the UK tomorrow. Muhamad Asyraf 's mother, Maznah Abu Mansor, said when she spoke to her son on the telephone last Tuesday, he had conveyed to his parents not to release any photos of himself to the media. "He was worried he would be an easy target for bullies in the future."

She also kept calling Muhamad Asyraf 's handphone but could not get through. It was only later she learned his phone had been stolen. "I immediately called my husband and he came home," said Maznah, a Bahasa Malaysia school teacher. Said Rossli: "I was at work about 9am when my wife called me, crying hysterically, saying Acap had been attacked and was seriously injured. I was thinking, how could this be? We had a 90 minute-long telephone conversation with Acap just the night before! "We couldn't stop advising him to be careful, to not walk alone, to keep away from the chaos. I knew there was always a possibility that something bad could happen, but I never expected it to happen to my own son." He said Muhamad Asyraf was attacked three hours after their phone conversation, when the latter was cycling to a house in Barking, east London, to buka puasa with his college seniors, but the couple was only alerted of the incident the next day. The following day, they prepared themselves for the worse when they viewed the YouTube video of the incident which turned viral over social networking websites. Rossli said he got to know of the video from the family of one of Muhamad Asyraf 's friends, who was also studying

in the UK, adding the friend had seen the video footage in the local news there. Together with their young child, Muhamad Fitri, eight, the family gathered in front of the computer and viewed the video posted on Asyraf 's Facebook page. In her most heart-wrenching words, Maznah said: "I couldn't stomach the video. Which parent can stand looking at his child beaten up, mugged and pushed around like that?" She said Fitri, who was close to Muhamad Asyraf, also broke down. "The sight of seeing his brother, dripping in blood and so far away, was too much to bear," said Maznah, adding both siblings were so close, each time Muhamad Asyraf called, he would ask about Fitri first. Maznah said at that point, she had to pull Fitri away to another room and consoled him before rushing back to watch the video for the second time. She said Muhamad Asyraf was a straight-A student and was very excited to receive a Mara scholarship to study accounting in the UK as he always had a passion for travel. The couple would be bringing Fitri along to the UK while their other son, who is studying in Johor Baru, would stay behind to focus on the upcoming SPM examinations. It was reported a man, believed to be in his 20s, was held on suspicion of robbery in the incident.

Not a blanket hike Airport tax for domestic flights to remain the same

WHILE Malaysian travellers to international destinations may fume over the increase in airport tax, domestic travellers have nothing to worry about. A source said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), which manages most of the airports in the country, has no plans to increase airport tax for domestic travellers at this point. This follows a local media

report yesterday of an airport tax increase which was subsequently confirmed by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha. He told The Malay Mail the increase was not related to the recent collaboration between Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. “It has nothing to do with

that because every airline, including Singapore Airlines and SilkAir, will have to pay the new tax. There is no ulterior motive behind the move," said the minister. “Also, the increase was agreed between MAHB and the Transport Ministry in 2009.” It was reported that interna-

tional passengers will have to pay from RM51 to RM65 at all 39 airports under MAHB, excluding low cost carrier terminals (LCCTs). LCCTs in Sepang and the Kota Kinabalu International Airport will see an increase from RM25 to RM32 for international flights. Domestic flight passengers currently have to pay only RM9 in tax at KLIA and RM6 at LCCTs.

Change plan or we fight, landowners declare "CHANGE the plan, otherwise expect us to fight." That was the message put across by Jalan Sultan landowners to Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana), the owner of the Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (MRT). The landowners said Jalan Sultan was part of Chinatown and acquiring the land to make way for the MRT was tantamount to destroying the "Chinese cultural heritage and community". Prasarana was just as adamant, stating that land acquisition had to proceed as the underground MRT line to be built underneath Jalan Sultan was the most optimum in terms of engineering and financial considerations. Prasarana's project development group director Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff said yesterday, tunnelling underneath Jalan Sultan was the best route between the proposed stations at KL Sentral and Stadium Negara. The station at Stadium Negara was also to cater for the future development of the Permodalan Nasional Bhd's (PNB) 100-storey Warisan Merdeka project. “We understand the Jalan Sultan community has been there for more than 100 years but I think all of us must realise there must be sacrifices for development,” Zulkifli told some 30 landowners at a briefing organised by Prasarana which was also attended by representatives of the Land Office, Valuation and Property Services Department and MMC-Gamuda JV, the developer of the MRT project. “It’s not that we want to purposely acquire your land. The

alignment has to go somewhere. This is for the rakyat.” The MRT line from Sungai Buloh to Kajang, will cover a distance of 51km, of which 9.5km will be underground. Seven of the 31 stations will also be underground, including one under the existing Klang Bus Stand at the end of Jalan Sultan. Zulkifli said under the law, Prasarana has to acquire the land above the stations and tunnel before subsurface work can begin. Section 44 of the National Land Code 1965 states that property owners not only have the right to the plot itself but also the air above and ground below. He said Prasarana has consulted the Attorney-General's Chambers on whether it was lawful for them to tunnel underneath existing properties without having to acquire them but was told it could not be done. He also told the landowners that due to safety concerns, building owners must vacate their premises due to the possibility of buildings collapsing when tunnel boring began. He added the Land Office will hold hearings with Jalan Sultan landowners from Monday to decide on the compensation to be paid. Owners may appeal the quantum by obtaining their own valuations. Construction of the line is expected to start in November and scheduled for completion in 2016, while MRT operations are expected to commence in 2017.

Driving licence renewal to be based on birthday By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani asrul@mmail.com.my

DRIVING licences can be renewed according to each driver's birthday beginning October, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha. He told The Malay Mail this proposal was awaiting approval by the Cabinet. “Once it is approved, circulars will be sent out. We are confident this new renewal system will be ready by October.” It was reported a total of 2.2 million of the 11.8 million driving licences were either not renewed or inactive. Road Transport Department (RTD) records showed that 47 per cent (2.7 million) of drivers in the country renewed their licence for only a oneyear period, 31 per cent (1.8 million people) for two years, 18 per cent (1.1 million) for three years while only five per cent (265,264) renewed for a five-year period. The renewal on birthday initiative was announced by

Kong last month to help drivers remember the expiry dates of their licences. Kong had also reportedly said drivers whose birthday exceeded more than six months of the licence's expiry date will be charged 50 per cent of the renewal fee. But no penalty fee will be charged if a driver's birthday was less than six months after the expiry date.

Upset but calm DESPITE looking dejected that their pleas to realign the proposed MRT line were denied, the Jalan Sultan landowners calmly argued their case throughout the proceedings yesterday when Prasarana would not budge from their prepared script. Hotel Lok Ann administrator Judy Lam vowed that owners would "fight to the end" and were willing to take the issue to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Describing Chinatown as the cultural heritage and history of Chinese in Malaysia, she said its demolition would be akin to "tearing apart the community". She said landowners were not against development but that does not mean having to sacrifice the country’s heritage. “We’re not asking for compensation because we want to

keep our long-held properties which had been the sacrifices of our forefathers. How can you put a price to that?” Richard Han, another landowner, said he never received any notice from the Land Office regarding the acquisition. He said most of the landowners were unhappy as they were not aware Prasarana must acquire their land to tunnel underneath their properties. Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Luin told The Malay Mail they will intensify their protest against the project if Prasarana did not change their plans. He said KL's Chinatown as a whole will be affected by the project and not just Jalan Sultan. "Chinatown is one of the country's biggest tourist attractions and any development around the area will not be beneficial."

Changes in UK student visa will benefit more CHANGES in the requirements for those applying for student visas to pursue their education in Britain will actually be more to students' benefit than a hindrance. In g iv ing t his assurance, Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ray Kyles (pic) said there are only two "slight changes" in the Tier 4 student visa system. One amendment, introduced in April this year, pertains to the notification of sufficient funds in an applicant's bank account. "The usual procedure is that the student must have sufficient funds to support the course fees and living expenses one month prior to submitting their application," said Kyles. Previously, when applicants failed to show sufficient funds one month before submitting their application, it would

By G. Prakash prakash@mmail.com.my

automatically be rejected. "Now, our processing officers would call up applicants who fail to meet this criteria for an explanation. We will look at it on a case-by-case basis and approval will be based on the officer's judgment." The other change is for students who intend to remain in Britain for a further period upon completing their course so that they can do another postgraduate course. Now the condition is that they enrol in a course which is better or of a higher standing than their previous one. Prior to that, those wishing to remain and work needed to apply for an additional course, irrespective of its benefit to the student.

Out you go! Students can be expelled over Internet torment, warns Education Ministry

SCHOOLS cannot turn their backs on students who fall victim to bullying even if the act took place in cyberspace. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) told The Malay Mail regardless of where the offence was committed, the victim remains a student and the ministry views any type of bullying cases seriously. "It doesn't matter where the bullying happened even online on social networking sites, they are still students and at the end of the day such incidents should not happen in the first place. "Should there be any case of bullying, the victim should report the matter immediately, first to a teacher, a disciplinary teacher and the headmaster. If any of these superiors refuse to take up the case, then the student should report straight

to the ministry. We will investigate and take action," he told The Paper That Cares when asked to comment on the rise of such cases in the country. Wee was referring to the case of a 14-yearold school girl who turned to alcohol as she could no longer face cyberbullying by her schoolmates, through a social networking site. Her school teacher dismissed her complaints claiming the offence did not take place on school grounds. He said action could

be taken on teachers who did not care for the welfare of students under their care in the first place.

SCHOOLS must take action against students who bully, including on the Internet, before the situation gets out of hand, said National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng (pic). "With the presence of the Internet, school bullies have yet another way of getting to their victims. In school, the bullies may have limited time in harassing their victims but with social networking sites, victims have no reprieve from these bullies who can continue posting hurtful messages at any time they wish to," she told The Malay Mail.

"Such bullying on the Internet is an infringement of human rights too. This is because by posting an insulting comment on the Internet

about another person, the wider world can see it. This directly defames the victim." Lok urged school authorities, the Education Ministry and the police to team up in tackling bullying which has become problematic in certain schools. "The authorities should formulate preventive measures to deter bullying at schools, including on the Internet," she said. "Students must be aware they cannot post damaging comments about others on the Internet where culprits should not be allowed to get away free."

Ministry will review cases of intimidation

DEPUTY Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said they will review cases of bullying in schools on a case to case basis and if the bullying results in physical or mental trauma for victims, the guilty students can be expelled. When asked why "leniency" was shown in the May 7 case of 13-year-old Wong from SMK

Raja Abdullah, Kepong, whose humiliation by her school mates was recorded on video and uploaded on Facebook, in which three bullies were only given a two-week suspension and ordered to undergo counselling sessions, Wee said he did not want to expel the bullies as it was the girls' first offence adding that "they (the bullies

SMILES ALL AROUND: The children being treated to a ‘buka puasa’ feast

Fasting month teaches cop to be more patient

BEING a policeman on the 4pm to midnight shift during Ramadan often means delaying buka puasa until the assigned duties are completed. “It's quite rare that I get to sit and buka puasa properly and on time when I am on late afternoon and night duty," said 25-year-old constable Mohd Elias Drahman who has been attached to the PJ police headquarters for the past three years. "Even when I finally break fast, a distress call will come in when I am halfway through a meal. There would be days when I can only manage to down a glass of water before having to run off and catch criminals or something. But the fasting month also teaches me to be more patient.” Mohd Elias, who hails from Kota Baru, said the most com-

mon crimes he has to attend to are snatch thefts and brawls. "I normally go on patrol using a police car or motorcycle," he said The midnight to 8am shift during Ramadan also makes it difficult to perform sahur (meal consumed early in the morning before fasting begins).

"Still, while on duty during before-midnight and aftermidnight shifts, I sometimes don't realise I have become hungry." Naturally, the “easiest” shift during Ramadan would be from 8am to 4pm, as a Muslim would have performed sahur before starting work and buka puasa at about 7pm after hav-

ing had a rest after the day’s work. And what is the most interesting thing that has happened to Mohd Elias while on duty during Ramadan in the last three years? "I was breaking fast during night shift when I was interrupted in order to chase a drug addict."

IN conjunction with Ramadan, Celcom Axiata Berhad organised a buka puasa treat on Monday for 50 orphans from Asrama Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Sekendi in Batu 36, Sabak Bernam, Selangor. The children were taken on a one-day fun-filled trip, escorted by 44 staff from Celcom Central. “As a socially responsible and caring company, Celcom takes every opportunity to reach out and assist those in need, be it financially or other means such as gotong-royong," said Ricky Cheah, regional vice-president of Celcom Axiata's Central region. "What better time to share and care than during the holy Ramadan month with the buka

puasa event with the orphans hosted by Central region being one fine example. Not forgetting the less fortunate, we strive to bring festive joy to the children at the shelter by distributing Raya essentials and providing monetary contribution. We truly hope the donations will go towards helping the children get their school necessities and enable them to better focus on their studies." The orphans received a new pair of baju Melayu or baju kurung each. The Celcom Central staff also helped to paint the Asrama and make minor repair works. Celcom Axiata is the country's foremost mobile telecommunications provider.

Hostels may go

Yayasan Selangor to bring down two decades old dorms next year THE two 1970s-era hostels owned by Yayasan Selangor in Kampung Pandan are expected to be demolished early next year. The hostels, Asrama Tun Dr Ismail and Asrama Toh Puan Norashikin, are located next to the massive multi-billion redevelopment of the government quarters at Jalan Peel and Jalan Cochrane. The hostels, officially opened in 1975, were named after the late Deputy Prime Minister Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman and his late wife, Toh Puan Norashikin Mohd Seth. The demolition has been accelerated as most of the surrounding buildings, primarily government quarters, had been demolished recently to make way for the redevelopment of the area. Last November, The Malay Mail reported Yayasan Selangor, a State-owned foundation set up in 1970 to offer and provide educational opportunities, training and scholarships, had planned to relocate the students at both hostels to a boarding school to be built at Bestari Jaya in Kuala Selangor within the next two years. However, the pace of the redevelopment had forced the foundation to stop the intake of students for both hostels next year. The foundation's website did not state it was planning to demolish the two hostels

but said instead it was closing both down by the end of this year. It also said that due to the redevelopment, the hostels were no longer conducive for students and due to its current location in Kampung Pandan, students had to spend hours commuting to and from their schools, some as far away as Petaling Jaya. Yayasan Selangor also previously had another city hostel, Asrama Dr Latiff in Persiaran Gurney, which was demolished in the 1990s to make way for a highway. These three hostels were built in the early 1970s to give Selangor's rural students the opportunity to enrol at top secondary schools in KL, which was once the State's capital until the Federal Territory was formed. The foundation also runs two district hostels at Sabak Bernam and Klang and still offers scholarships to students from secondary schools in Selangor. It is expected that some of the students at the two hostels in Kampung Pandan will be relocated to hostels at their respective schools. Some others, however, like those studying at Sekolah Menengah Seri Aman and Sekolah Menengah Assunta, need to find other schools or

stay with relatives or friends as both schools do not have their own hostels. Yayasan Selangor spends RM3.9 million annually for both the Kampung Pandan hostels to cater for 468 students. With the impending closure, the money would instead be channelled to help some 4,220 students around

the State. The two hostels will be replaced by religious boarding schools at Ijok in Kuala Selangor, by the Selangor Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jais). Yayasan Selangor came under the spotlight after chalking up losses of RM7.41 million from January to No-

vember last year. The Sultan of Selangor snubbed the foundation’s 40th anniversary luncheon apparently over its exorbitant cost. It also came under criticism from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers due to the low number of non-Malays receiving scholarships and admission into its hostels.

MB wants feedback SELANGOR Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is waiting for feedback from the parents of students staying at two Yayasan Selangor hostels in Kuala Lumpur before deciding whether to accept the foundation's proposal to close both hostels. His political secretary, Faekah Hussin, responding to The Malay Mail, said the fate of the two hostels, Asrama Tun Dr Ismail and Asrama Toh Puan Norashikin, has not been determined although the foundation indicated both would be closed by year-end and demolished to make way for redevelopment in the area. "There is no decision on the closure but the hostels now seem unsuitable for students as they have to commute long distances to their schools and back," said Faekah. "The Menteri Besar has instructed Yayasan Selangor to gauge public opinion by calling the parents of the students and those involved. If affirmative, Yayasan Selangor has to propose a suitable alternative for the affected students and until then no decision will be made on the issue." Khalid is the chairman of Yayasan Selangor's board of trustees. A campaign to save the two hostels has been initiated on Facebook by alumni members. A page called Selamatkan Asrama Yayasan Selangor aims to get at least 200,000 "ayes" to pressure the Selangor government not to close the two hostels. Apart from the travelling issue, the foundation justified the closure as both hostels are located next to the massive redevelopment area. Most of the government quarters in the area had been demolished recently.

'Seeing' double!

Confusion reigns as two housing estates share same road name

SAME ADDRESS, DIFFERENT LOCATIONS: A letter sent to Mahani in Taman Berjaya (above) and to Syed Harun's house in Taman Gombak Tambahan

THeSE ARE YOURS: Mahani 'delivering' mail to Syed Harun — Pix: AKHAIRULL AZRY BIDIN

NO ONE really minds that much if the postman were to send someone else's letters to their house as common courtesy would be to simply redirect them to their rightful recipients. But, to have staff from such utilities as TNB Bhd and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) coming to your house to cut off your electricity or water supply is too much to stomach! That has happened to SYED HARUN SYED YACOB, 54, who has been staying in a house with his mother, aged 85, since1997. It seems SYED HARUN and another woman share the same house number and road name! SYED HARUN lives at No 14, Jalan Berjaya 5 in Taman

Gombak Tambahan. The woman lives at No 14, Jalan Berjaya 5 in Taman Berjaya, some 200m away, completed a few years earlier. But while there are road signs in Taman Gombak Tambahan, there are no signs in Taman Berjaya. The street naming convention needs the approval of the local authorities and SYED HARUN is annoyed at having to cope with the confusion. "I don't know why the Selayang Municipal Council approved the street names in my housing estate as there apparently are similar names in Taman Berjaya. It has caused a lot of problems for many of us." SYED HARUN says attempts by residents in Taman

Gombak Tambahan to have the street names changed have not been successful. He says he has lodged at least 10 letters of complaint with the local council, the last being in 2008, but no action has been taken. Yesterday, TNB staff went

to his house intending to disconnect the power supply because of a problem. SYED HARUN says he took a long time to explain the confusion, backed by receipts, before the officers left. Meanwhile, MAHANI MOHAMED, 41, who lives

at No 14, Jalan Berjaya 5, Taman Berjaya, says she has to take a walk to the other housing estate every time letters or other items are delivered to her house. "Once a week, I would usually be delivering misdirected letters to Taman Gombak

Tambahan," she says. ● A SPOKESMAN for the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) says they will investigate. "If the addresses of both the houses are indeed the same, we will take action."

Subscriber gets smartphone at last HARVINDERJIT SINGH, 31, of Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor, was looking forward to getting a new smartphone when he signed up with DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd to transfer his mobile phone line from another service provider. "When the DiGi representatives came to my office in Cyberjaya to promote their services, I

signed up for their BlackBerry plan for 24 months," he says. " I also agreed to buy the new BlackBerry Bold 9780 phone for RM999, which is cheaper than the market price. I was told the phone would be delivered to me within one week." While the phone service transfer was completed quickly, HARVINDERJIT has been waiting

for his new BlackBerry. When he enquired, he was told the delay was because DiGi was unable to process payment from his credit card. But he was assured the problem would be resolved and his new phone sent to him. With the phone still nowhere in sight, HARVINDERJIT says he has instructed DiGi to cancel

his subscription and transfer his phone line back to the previous service provider. ● A SPOKESMAN for DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd says the delay in the delivery of the BlackBerry phone is because of an "unsuccessful purchase transaction". "However, we are pleased to

inform that he has since received his phone." The spokesman says HARVINDERJIT will not be charged for calls during the period. When contacted, HARVINDERJIT confirms he received his BlackBerry Bold 9780 on Aug 5.

Garden waste ignored Council says Taman Alam Putra not on collection list yet A SIMPLE matter such as garden waste collection has been causing LIEW SHEONG LAM sleepless nights for the past year. LIEW, a resident of Taman Alam Putra in Seri Kembangan, says his garden waste has not been collected by the Sepang Municipal Council's garbage collection contractors. In fact, he says the garbage collectors seem to ignore any garden waste for the whole residential area. As a result, such waste has been left in front of many houses and some neighbours have been forced to hire lorries to take away their garden waste to avoid the stink of rotting wood and leaves. "The other alternative would be to simply burn this garden waste but we are not allowed by law to do so. Imagine what problems the smoke will cause to the neighbourhood. "There is also the fear that flying sparks could trigger some fire during the recent dry season. "Fortunately, we are aware of our responsibilities but we are at our wit's end as to how to get rid of the garden waste." LIEW says the garbage contractors seem to be choosy with their garbage collection. "I will pack my garden waste and my domestic waste separately in garbage bags and place them in the rubbish shutter in front of my house. "The garbage contractors will only collect the domestic

"The rules and regulations of the contest state the winner will receive the prize within six weeks from the date of the points redemption."

AMALINA says that when she did not receive her prize after six weeks, she called the bank several times and was told on each occasion the prize was on the way. "The last time I called their customer service, they told me the problem will be resolved by July 15. Until now, the prize has not arrived. PJ: For The Record: The evil that people do (Aug 10)

Treat everyone fairly

EVIL is present everywhere, either in the form of rioting and looting or in other unseen realm. Malaysia should learn from all this and, like the writer said, be spared the evil of those who love destruction and anarchy. As history has repeatedly shown, if one society is deprived, one day they will rise up. Therefore, it is important to be fair to society no matter how different the cultures or religions may be. Do not make the mistake of thinking that if a society is small or uneducated, it can be ignored.

We are humans and each of us is blessed with a brain to think and react. When the time comes, we will use it. To b egin with, ever y country's population starts from a small number of people. It is common knowledge that nothing in this world stays the same. This also applies to countries around the world. A developing countr y will one day become a developed nation. Likewise, Malaysia will also one day become fully developed, just like the West. When that day arrives,

Malaysia will surely inherit the same problems currently affecting the West and their society. I have live d in b ot h worlds, East and West, for some time. You can say my heart is in the East but my body in the West. I feel it is better we do not over-criticise the West over what is happening to them right now because the Earth is round. One day, the Eastern world will become like that of the West. Who knows, maybe one day we will wake up to find that we are already living in that world. It won't be a surprise.

Coming back to the rioting incident, I find many of the looters and rioters are from deprived families and areas. I believe many also come from many generation of broken homes and families. Some of these areas have long histories of racial tensions; between Whites and Blacks, Blacks and Asians, locals and foreigners. I have lived in most of these areas and got to know a few of them, be it Whites, Blacks, Asians, etc. I have been the local man and I have also been the foreigner. I have been poor and homeless. I have also been mugged.

Be serious in tackling problem More importantly, the recommendations that emerge should be published for public scrutiny and feedback before being fine-tuned and implemented promptly and effectively. In spelling out and executing the policy, there needs to be careful planning — both immediate and long-term — proper organisation with the required resources for its implementation, and an efficient monitoring mechanism to ensure that goals and targets that are meaningfully and transparently set are achieved. We are well aware that in the context of free market economics and globalisation, the use of the English language in the acquisition

of knowledge and information, conducting foreign relations, interacting with international institutions and transacting trade has become indispensable as a means of communication. At the micro-level, learning, improving, mastering and using good English enhance one’s job opportunities, career prospects and personal life. It cannot be emphasised enough that there is a pressing need for English language standards to improve in our schools and institutions of learning. It is sad that Malaysia which, just a few generations ago, produced a host of English-language proficient and articulate workers, tech-

nocrats, professionals, diplomats and leaders, should now be struggling with a generation unable to communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings coherently, clearly and competently in that very language. Let us hope that our policy-makers, administrators and educationists will seriously tackle the deteriorating standard of English in our schools and in the country and, together with the teachers, rededicate themselves to the task of helping develop a more enlightened generation of students eager to acquire a good knowledge of the language. Rueben Dudley

PJ: No water woes in Selangor (Aug 8)

Resolve issues immediately THE recent reports on water shortage anticipated in 2012 is an eye-opener to the people on the need to increase water supply production to cater to the fast growing demand, especially in the Klang Valley. As the population and development grow, there will inevitably be a higher demand for water. The increase in the number of people will also lead to more waste being generated. Some proactive measures

need to be taken immediately to solve this problem and I strongly urge both the Federal and State governments to work hand-in-hand with the water authorities instead of being at loggerheads. The Federation of Malaysian C onsumers Ass o ciat ion (Fomca) has done a great job by highlighting this issue to the Government so that early steps could be taken to deal with the water issues. What surprises me is that

ducted in the West which I have attended and I can say they have little impact on the participants. I believe only a handful of people are the cause of the current problem heppening in the UK and not everyone is bad. Do not hate everyone but love everyone. Society is about living harmoniously with one another regardless of cultures and religions. Be not a problem but be a solution. Now, if anyone is quick to criticise, they must also be quick to give solutions. Colourless Journalist

PJ: US debt crisis

PJ: Bad English (April 28)

DEPUTY Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also our Education Minister, recently expressed serious concern over our students’ poor command of the English language. His directive to the ministry to identify the shortcomings and recommend remedial action is a step in the right direction. It is, however, imperative that a cross-section of academics, especially those with proven English language pedagogical skills, professionals in different fields, teachers and parents, be involved in the assessment, which itself should not take long since much of what has caused the retrogression is fairly well known.

Some of the locals have called me "Paki" although I am not a Pakistani. This is because I am friends with everyone. You can say that I am 100 per cent colour blind. Luckily, I inherited good values taught to me by my parents which has played an important role in my life. It is sad some of these people do not have these good values instilled in them probably because the parents themselves come from a bad parenting background. There are a few integration programmes con-

Selangor State exco member Elizabeth Wong and Klang MP Charles Santiago, who is also the coodinator of Coalition Against the Privatisation of Water, seem to hold the view the current situation needs no immediate solution. Wong has mentioned that water supply is sufficient until 2019. For me, as a consumer, there is no difference between 2012 and 2019 if no action is being taken by then.

Being an exco member in charge of environmental issues, she should have acted wisely by thinking of ways to rehabilitate the environment and preserve our rivers to ensure that raw water is always available to be treated. I hope this will be taken seriously by both the Federal and State governments and the authorities as water is an essential need for all of us. Norma Zainol

Tread carefully during troubled times LAST WEEK, Minister in the Prime Minister's D ep ar t ment Tan Sr i Nor Mohamed Yakcop reportedly said the European financial crisis and US economic slowdown will not affect the country’s economy. From the news report, he was confident Malaysia will be able to sustain its economic growth because of its dependency on China and India. He added that our country was lucky to have business dealings with both countries, now considered the world’s economic giants. This, however, does not mean we should throw money around as if there is no tomorrow. The public and government should adopt the "better safe than sorry" mindset if they don't want to see Malaysia face a similarly dire financial situation as in United States or in Europe. The drop in value of the US dollar will mean that goods from America will be cheaper but this does not mean we should spend more on US goods. Sure, their products will be cheaper but we should focus more on buying lo ca l ly-made products instead.

This will at least ensure ou r m on e y re m ai n s circulated within our economy and make our ringgit more stable and stronger. If things were to turn for the worse, our mindful spending and attitude here will ensure we will be able to "ride out" of the situation safe and sound. What is happening in the US, as many are a lre ady aware of, is because they are overspending their money unt i l it has lost its value. This should serve as a reminder to Malaysia that a similar incident can happen here if we are not careful. Our economy is smaller than that of the US and whatever is happening there will, in one way or another, affect us and the rest of the world. Ju s t l o o k at w h at the previous economic recession has done to the US, a very advanced country, and now barely three years out of it, they are sinking back into the spiral of financial problem. I am sure all Malaysians would not want the situation in the US to happen here. Mokhtar

UK mulls restricting social media BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday the government was looking at banning potential troublemakers from using social media, after it was used to organise riots across Britain this week. "Ever yone watching these horrific actions will be struck by how they were organised by social media. Free flow of information can be used for good. But it can also be used for ill," he told lawmakers. "And when people are using social media for violence we need to stop them. "So we are working with the police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and ser vices when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality." — AFP

Improving ties Cambodia sees end to 'nightmare' Thai relationship

CAMBODIAN premier Hun Sen (pic) said yesterday the "nightmare" of strained relations with Thailand was over as he vowed to work with the new government in Bangkok to resolve a border row. The countries have engaged in occasionally deadly clashes over a disputed area near a 900year-old temple, though tensions have eased since an election victory by allies of ousted ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra last month. "Now is a good opportunity to announce a new era of cooperation between the Cambodian government and the Thai government led by the Puea Thai Party," Hun Sen said in a speech in the Cambodian capital. "I think everything that happened in the past can be considered as the last nightmare of the relationship between

Cambodia and Thailand. From now on, ties will be better," he vowed. He added that Cambodia was "looking at all means" to improve the border situation and that he suspected the dispute would no longer be a major issue of concern for the 10-member Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN). Cambodia is due to take over as ASEAN chair from Indonesia next year. Phnom Penh has made no secret of its delight with the new Thai government, especially Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of Thaksin, whom Hun Sen has described as an "eternal friend". Under previous Thai premier Abhisit Vejjajiva the border spat twice escalated into heavy arms clashes this year, prompting Phnom Penh to take the dispute to the United Nation's

highest court. The Hague-based International Court of Justice in July asked both nations to withdraw military personnel from around the Preah Vihear temple complex. Neither side has pulled out yet, though the border situation has been calm and Hun Sen said Cambodia had started to reduce troop numbers from other areas near the temple. Although Thailand does not dispute Cambodia's ownership of Preah Vihear, both Phnom Penh and Bangkok cl ai m a 4 . 6 s qu are-k i lometre area of adjacent land. 'Good Samaritan' arrested for student's attack

BRITISH police said yesterday they have arrested a man in connection with the robbery of a Malaysian student during riots in London this week by a group who pretended to be helping him. The suspect, in his 20s, was taken into police custody as the student, Muhamad Asyraf Haziq Rossli, insisted he bore no ill feelings about the incident on Monday and intended to stay in Britain until he completes his accountancy studies. Footage taken of a bleeding Asyraf being helped up during unrest in Barking, east London, by a group of men who proceeded to empty his rucksack has become one of the most shocking images of the unrest. The video has been watched almost three million times on YouTube and the incident was condemned by Prime Minister David Cameron as "disgusting", showing "there are things badly wrong with our society". In a statement, Scotland Yard confirmed that a man had been arrested over the attack, which occurred as Asyraf, was on his way to see a friend in nearby East Ham who was worried about the rioting. "Officers have today arrested a man in connection with an incident whereby a young man was robbed by a group who pretended to help him after he was assaulted during Monday’s disorder," Scotland Yard said. It added: "The suspect, believed to be in his 20s, has been taken into police custody. Inquiries continue." Asyraf underwent surgery for a broken jaw on Wednesday and he was discharged

from hospital yesterday morning. Speaking to reporters afterwards, he said he did not intend to leave Britain now, saying he still thought it was "great" and intended to complete the next two years of studies for his ACCA accountancy exams. Asked how he felt about his attackers, Asyraf said: "I feel sorry for them. But it was really sad because amongst them there were children, it was very sad. It was quite shocking." — AFP

A SHOCKED community scarred by riots lined the streets here yesterday to support a father hailed as a hero for his dignified response to his son's death. Tariq Jahan's son, 21-year-old Haroon Jahan, was one of three men of Asian origin killed when the worst riots in living memory rocked Birmingham, Britain's second city. Dozens of bunches of flowers were laid around two lampposts by the entrance to the petrol station which the young men were guarding from looters early Wednesday before they were mown down by a car travelling at high speed. The deaths, in the inner-city suburb of Winson Green and widely believed to be at the hands

of looters of Afro-Caribbean descent, stunned a racially mixed area where relations between different communities are largely good. Skyrocketing tensions threatened to erupt into a wave of interethnic violence late Wednesday as young men of Asian descent vowed to take revenge. Even police have acknowledged that it was only an emotional plea from Jahan not to seek revenge for his son's death that lowered the temperature and saved the area from a second night of violence. "I don't want there to be any more trouble, anyone getting hurt," he told an angry crowd of some 150 men, some wearing hoods and preparing to march through the area. — AFP

US stocks rebound strongly again US stocks made another dramatic comeback after a stunning fall yesterday, in another day of extreme volatility in markets around the world. The Dow Jones Industrial Average battled back from Wednesday's 520-point loss with a 3.94 per cent gain, adding 422.84 points to close at 11,142.78. The broader S&P 500 rebounded 4.63 per cent, up 51.87 points to 1,172.63, while the Nasdaq gained 111.63 points, or 4.69 per cent, to 2,492.68. It was the US markets' second recovery this week, after Tuesday's jump to overcome a big loss on Monday. "This isn't a volatile equity market. It is an extremely volatile equity market," said Patrick O'Hare of Briefing.com. The markets opened higher and picked up the pace after Europe's bourses closed solidly in the green zone.— AFP

Oops, where is our super-plane? IN Los Angeles, an unmanned hypersonic glider developed for US defence research into super-fast global strike capability was launched atop a rocket early yesterday but contact was lost after the experimental craft began flying on its own, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said. There was no immediate information on how much of the mission's goals were achieved, the Huffington Post reports The launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, northwest of Los Angeles, was the second of two planned flights of a Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2. Contact was also lost during the first mission. Shaped like the tip of a spear, the small craft is part of a US military initiative to develop technology to respond to threats at 20 times the speed of sound or greater.

Bear cubs freed from garage home TWO bear cubs who had been locked up in appalling conditions in a small garage in Saint Petersburg, Russia's former imperial capital were freed yesterday, an animal defence official said. "The two cubs who spent almost two years in this garage with only three small holes for air were freed today and taken to a rehab centre," Dinara Ageyeva of the Vita aid group said. The two, named Rita and Roma, were owned by a photographer who sought to attract tourists but rarely let them out of their prison-like home which was not heated in winter and was stuffy in summer. Neighbours alerted animal rights activists on Wednesday after they heard growls coming from the garage and reported a nauseous stench. — AFP

Tiny 'tattoo patch' has many uses

A HAIR-THIN electronic patch that adheres to the skin like a temporary tattoo could transform medical sensing, computer gaming and even spy operations, according to a US study published yesterday. The micro-electronics technology, called an epidermal electronic system (EES), was

developed by an international team of researchers from the United States, China and Singapore, and is described in the journal Science. "It's a technology that blurs the distinction between electronics and biology," said co-author John Rogers, a professor in materials science and engineering at

62 pro-Gbagbo army officers charged IVORY COAST has charged 62 army officers close to ousted ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and is holding 40 of them in custody, a military justice official said yesterday. the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Our goal was to develop an electronic technology that could integrate with the skin in a way that is mechanically and physiologically invisible to the user." The patch could be used instead of bulky electrodes to monitor brain, heart and

muscle tissue activity and when placed on the throat it allowed users to operate a voice-activated video game with better than 90 per cent accuracy. "This type of device might provide utility for those who suffer from certain diseases of the larynx," said Rogers. "It could also form the basis

of a sub-vocal communication capability, suitable for covert or other uses." The wireless device is nearly weightless and requires so little power it can fuel itself with miniature solar collectors or by picking up stray or transmitted electromagnetic radiation, the study said. —AFP

Fiery Obama President lashes out at Republicans who put party ahead of country

Philips recalls two million faulty bulbs DUTCH lighting and electronics giant Philips said yesterday it was recalling nearly two million defective lightbulbs in the United States and Canada. "We are recalling nearly two million domestic lightbulbs in the United States and Canada because the glass that is supposed to protect the element could become unglued from the base and cause it to cut out," said Philips lighting division spokeswoman Shai Dewan. The recall concerns the Marathon and Marathon Classic energy saver compact fluorescent dimmable reflector lamps sold between March 2007 and July this year in the United States and Canada. Dewan said the recall was being undertaken as a precaution following the report of 700 of the lightbulbs failing. Consumers were to urged to call a special hotline or visit its website to request a replacement lightbulb. — AFP

Vampire bat bite causes man's death

A TEENAGER from Mexico became the first person in the United States to die after being bitten by a vampire bat and infected with rabies, US health authorities said yesterday. The 19-year-old man was a migrant farm worker who had been bitten on the heel by a vampire bat in his native Michoacan on July 15, about 10 days before he left for the United States to pick sugar cane at a plantation in Louisiana. "This case represents the first reported human death from a vampire bat rabies virus variant in the United States," said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its Morbidity and Mortality weekly report. The unusually aggressive form of rabies had an incubation period of just 15 days, compared

to the median 85 days seen in other cases of human rabies in the United States, the CDC said. Although vampire bat populations are currently confined to Latin America, climate change could be forcing their populations northward, leading to more cases of human infection in the southern United States. The patient had never received a rabies vaccine and fell ill about two weeks after he was bitten. He developed respiratory distress and high fever and died a few days later. Vampire bats are bloodsucking nocturnal mammals typically found in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. They usually feed on sleeping wildlife and livestock, but s omet imes bite people, too. — AFP

been a willingness to compromise in Congress," Obama said, lashing out in a fiery speech in a Michigan electric battery factory. "The only thing keeping us back is our politics," he said, complaining that some of his foes in Congress were putting party ahead of country. "There are some in Congress right now who would rather see their opponents lose than America win. That has to stop. We are supposed to all be on the same team, especially when we are going through tough times." "There is nothing wrong with our country. There is something wrong with our politics. There's something wrong with our politics that we need to fix." In the speech, which had all the characteristics of a campaign pitch for Obama's election bid next year, the

president called on Congress to endorse an extension of a payroll tax cut and to pass long-stalled free trade pacts. "Do you want to put people to work right now rebuilding America? You have got to send that message to Congress," Obama roared, in an unusually aggressive speech. Obama was to attend two lucrative fund-raisers in New York City, following a month-long showdown with Republicans over debt which pushed his reelection bid into the background. The Michigan factory, Johnson Controls, received US$300 million (RM900m) from the president's economic stimulus plan, which was pilloried by Republicans, and has created 150 jobs in Michigan and Wisconsin. The company will ensure the US produces 40 per cent of the world's advanced batteries by 2015. — AFP

Rhino horn hoard kept secret SOUTH AFRICA'S rhino horn stocks will remain secret due to security fears, amid a poaching crisis that has seen more than 200 animals slaughtered this year, the environment minister said yesterday. "An inventory of rhino horn that is held by conservation agencies in South Africa has been completed, but due to security risks the Department of Environmental Affairs cannot publicly announce the amount of stocks," said Minister Edna Molewa. The stockpile was mostly from animals that had died naturally in the bush with some of the horns confiscated in anti-poaching cases. The amounts and locations were not released due to fears they would be targeted by criminals due to the high black market demand for horns. Rhino poaching in South Africa has reached crisis levels, with more than 200 animals killed in the first half of the year and 333 wiped out last year. A feasibility study on legalising the

trade and a global market research project are still to be done and should enable the department to determine if unbanning sales would be a way to control the market and prevent poaching, Molewa said. "The horns are said to fetch tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, to feed an Asian black market for traditional medicine. Meanwhile in Belgium, robbers made off with two rhino horns from a Belgium museum, the third such heist in the country in less than two months, prompting official warnings against the illicit trade. – AFP

Pop diva gets carried away with food

By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my SINCE getting married to businessman Real Ting Chi Ko in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, Hong Kong pop diva Miriam Yeung Chin Wah seems to have been transformed. From a girl who loves buying handbags and shoes, she is now a wife who loves cooking — especially curry! When the 37-year-old singer shared with reporters her newfound passion in cooking recently, one could sense how much fun she is having. She was in Kuala Lumpur recently to announce her Ladies

ON CLOUD NINE: Yeung, who is busy filming a new movie in Beijing, took time off to be in Malaysia to promote her upcoming concert here next month

and Gentlemen Miriam Yeung Live in Malaysia 2011concert. The Press conference was held at the Garden Lifestyle Store & Cafe, Viva Home. "When I arrived this morning, I was dead tired but was immediately charged up the minute I saw all the shiny pots and pans that were displayed in shops around this area," Yeung said. "Part of me grew up when I became Mrs Ting, and now I am into cooking. My latest craze is

cooking the perfect curry! I love eating spicy food but I don't seem to be getting the perfect taste and texture for my curry. "I heard that in Malaysia, curry paste is sold in small packets. Maybe I should get my assistant to buy some later," she said with a laugh. Yeung, who is currently busy filming a new movie in Beijing, took time off to be in Malaysia to promote her upcoming concert, which will be held at the Arena

of Stars, Genting Highlands, next month. "I hope to take a long break next year after I am done filming and completing my concerts, to stay at home to learn how to cook. I've set a challenge for myself, which is to learn how to cook 10 dishes. Well, actually it's tougher than doing a show!" she said. After realising that she has taken too much time from the conference just to talk about her lastest craze, Yeung apologised: "I am sorry, I just got carried away talking about my food adventure." Well, a woman needs to say what a woman needs to say. Apart from talking about her concert in Malaysia, Yeung also talked about healthy eating and lifestyle. "As a singer, you need to watch what you eat. I will stay on a healthy diet plan. You know, some food can really affect your performance," she said. As for her song selection for the upcoming concert, Yeung said due to

time constraints, she can only go up to a maximum of 25 songs for a single performance. "There's little you can do in two hours. Even if I cut all the talking, I can only sing 25 songs. I can't just sing without saying

anything to my fans. I think I am better than Eason Chan. He could talk for an hour during his show, but I'll be talking for about 30 minutes. But then again, the concert is like an interaction between me and my fans." Since tying the knot in December last year, the celebrity couple is also letting nature take its course, leaving the matter of having children to fate. "No, we're not planning for kids yet. I am very tired after continous filming from early morning till late at night. So tired that I can hardly feed myself. I guess, it all depends on fate. If you're resting well with less stress, your body will automatically be ready to conceive a baby. When we're ready, we'll plan for a bigger family," she said. Tickets for the Ladies and Gentlemen Miriam Yeung Live in Malaysia 2011 concert on Sept 3 at 8pm are priced at RM803 (VIP), RM483 (PS1), RM353 (PS2), RM253 (PS3), RM183 (PS4) and RM128 (PS5). Goodyear launches Eagles GOODYEAR showed off their latest ultra high performance products— the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and F1 Directional 5. The tyres were launched regionally at the Kaeng Krachan Circuit in Thailand and a session with car clubs was their way of giving enthusiastic drivers a chance to feel the performance for themselves. The new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is the first Goodyear tyre to use ActiveBrak-

ing Technology which helps deliver up to 3 metres shorter stopping distance on wet roads and up to 2 metres on dry roads when tested against three leading competitors. Meanwhile, the F1 Directional 5 incorporates SportGrip Technology to offer precise and responsive handling, style and performance on the street. It excels in steering response and cornering power, providing precise handling behaviour

and outstanding grip performance on various types of surfaces and conditions. “Innovation is at the heart of everything that we do. Both tyres are testament of the vigorous and continuous R&D that is the lifeblood of Goodyear. “This ensures that we produce quality performance tyres that meet a wide range of needs, be it ultra performance, everyday motoring or for commercial applications,” said Richard Fleming, managing director, Goodyear ASEAN.

“The local launch involved 11 car clubs whose members put the tyres through the most stringent of tests with the aim of demonstrating why these tyres are the top in class,” added Fleming. Taking both these best-inclass performance tyres to the track, Goodyear dealers and car enthusiasts experienced both tyres on a dry and wet slalom as well as through a high speed course using performance cars such as the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and Porsche Cayman. Following these performance tests, a drift demo was

conducted by the full Team Goodyear, including its newest member, Tan Tat Wei who also facilitated the Time Attack Challenge — a skill challenge for the participants to test the performance of the new tyres. Enthusiasts attending the event were from selected car clubs such as VW & Audi Club Malaysia, VW Sirocco Owners Club Malaysia, VAGMY – Volkswagen & Audi Group Malaysia & SEA, BWM Club Malaysia, My Latio Club, Lancer GT Club, Caldina Club Malaysia, Italia Auto Club, 8 Gen Civic Club and the Proton Inspira Owners Club Malaysia.

FOR as long as there is the motorcar, Continental tyres have been there and they have played a major role in the advancement of tyre technology throughout the years and they plan to continue in that position. The future demands tyres that are energy efficient with high performance — two divergent demands that have pressed their research and development

The RA edition takes on the inspired element of rac-

ing and adds on enhancements from Ralliart, the brand name for all Mitsubishi motor-sports related products. Priced at RM103, 980 on the road inclusive insurance, the fully imported pick-up truck comes

in two colours — Black Mica and White Solid. Owners get to enjoy a three-year/100,000km warranty as well as Mitsubishi’s Two Years Free Maintenance package. The Triton RA Edition is specially customised with an exclusive accessory package that includes tonneau cover, bumper extender, a unique racing element body sticker, window visor, racinginspired interior with Ralliart embroidery logo on the seats, aluminium scuff plate, limited edition Triton RA carpet mat, Ralliart emblem as well as the Triton RA serial plate number which indicates a limited edition of just 500 units made available. The Triton RA Edition centre stack also houses an Audio LCD touch screen entertainment system with built-in GPS navigation. Its full-colour LCD screen also doubles up as a display for the RA Edition reverse camera, which aids parking considerably. Occupants will also enjoy even more comfort from the

l well placed for the future laboratory into overtime. Among the innovations that have made the Continental name are grooved tyres which they invented in 1871, and winter tyres in 1952. Since 2003, Continental have been the market leader for original equipment in Europe and, since 2007, the group has been the overall market leader of automotive components as well. According to Continental Board member responsible for passenger and light truck tyres, Nikolai Setzer (pic), the market for high performance tyres are set to grow, especially in mature markets such as Europe. “I envision attractive growth chances in Europe, above all in the area of ultra-highperformance (UHP) tyres, with approved speeds in excess of 240km/h. “With annual growth rates of more than six per cent, this segment is likely to show the greatest and most profitable growth in the next few years. Our

17

strong technological orientation strengthens the broad base on which our competitiveness rests and remains one of the central cornerstones of our success,” he added. Setzer believes that rising safety awareness among motorists opened the door to additional demand potential for quality products especially in those that offer good performance. Continental is also expanding fast outside of their traditional bastion in Europe with new plants opening in China and fast growth in Brazil and Russia. "With the long-term production capacities planned for as many as 16 million passenger tyres a year in Hefei, we shall consistently reduce the dependence on imported tyres for the China market." Hefei will supply tyres mainly to meet the soaring demand in the growing Chinese market, where Continental already sells more than a million tyres each year.

Triton’s best-in-class cabin space, thanks to leather seats. The Triton 2.5 comprehensive standard equipment list, includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Passive safety features also includes Inti-Intrusion brake pedal, collapsible steering wheel, pre-tensioner, force limiter, dual-stage SRS airbags as well as Mitsubishi Motors’ rigid RISE body structure. That’s not all. Mitsubishi Triton also offers Hybrid LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and the best in class 5.9 turning radius which is the smallest turning radius made available in a pick-up truck. The Triton has made the Best Pick-up award its own since it was launched in Malaysia in 2006, claiming the title no less than four times from Autocar ASEAN and four times from New Straits Times/Maybank Car of the Year

Awards. In 2009, the Triton won Best Pick-up awards from both publications and has successfully defended the titles. In 2010, the Triton has once again proved its capabilities winning the 2010 Autocar ASEAN Pick-up Truck of the Year. It's also the only truck in Malaysia that can claim to have an entire range of award-winning variants. The Triton RA Edition will be made available in East Malaysia from Sept 5 onwards. Subaru teases Asean-bound XV ahead of Frankfurt

In order to maintain their competitive edge, Continental have 1,200 engineers working on new technologies at their development centre in Hanover. “By the end of 2012, we shall have created a further 100 posts bearing on engineering,” he explained. All this R&D will give birth to the Conti Sport Contact Vmax and Conti Force Contact racing tyres for speeds of 360km/h. “Based on our strong technological position, we have a good mix of original equipment and replacement tyres. Road traffic is currently going in the direction of a higher degree of ecofriendliness on the one hand and

an ever more pronounced safety requirement on the other. “This coincides ideally with our technological strengths. Our mix of smaller and larger tyres — i.e. from 17 inches upwards — likewise positions us very well, as do releases for speeds upwards of 240 km/h,” Setzer added.

WHEN Motor Image announced that it would assemble at least one model for the Asean market in Malaysia, the XV is the natural candidate as the new model is a versatile crossover that would suit demanding Asean motorists. Subaru says the XV defines a new generation of Subaru crossover vehicles. It is the production version of the Subaru XV Design Concept displayed last April at Shanghai motor

show. Subaru is pressing the XV into production after the concept was favourably received globally thanks to its distinctive and trendy design which blends a crossover-like commanding silhouette with an urban-friendly image into one harmonious and elegant package. Subaru is expected to display the production version of the XV at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

18 lifestyle TestDrive By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my IN their ad campaign for the S60, Volvo says that it is a naughty car — well, that probably means the S60 T6 AWD is the naughtiest of the brood. The metrics for measuring a car’s 'naughtiness' do not exist, so we are going to rely on the average parents’ yardstick for children’s naughtiness — a certain unwillingness to conform that is both annoying and charming. Right off the bat, the S60 certainly does not conform to the typical styling of Volvo — the curves are more dramatic, the wedge shape more pronounced and the roofline is more Italian than Scandinavian. More than any Volvo before it, the S60 is tuned to please the driver. While it is not yet pin sharp and nervous like a racing car, this sedan is actually in danger of having neutral handling characteristics. There is still understeer on the limit but that could all be down to the nature of all-wheel-

Be assertive and you can feel the chassis gripping of Volvo and on these counts they conform the tarmac and pulling the car into corners. to the naughty yardstick. We now need to decide if these characteristics are annoying and charming in equal measure. To be honest, the design is more charming than annoying but I am not a hardcore Volvo fan. I suspect those who grew up on the tank proportions of classics like the 240 and 740, think the S60 is sufficiently annoying. 63mm The same can be said of the handling characteristics. Those familiar with the relatively soft spoken Volvo steering and safe understeer on the limit may find the S60 T6 AWD a little unnerving. In terms of power delivery, the S60 has more than enough horses to upturn any Recommended frown. Tyre So yes, it is a very naughty Volvo but is it naughty enough to play rough with the other boys in the neighbourhood, like the A4, C-Class and 3-series? In one word, yes. Why? That big stonking engine under the bonnet. There is nothing like a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine beating under the bonnet. For obvious reasons, the S60 is loads of fun in a straight line and once you are adept at keeping the engine on the boil to avoid turbo-lag, it can also be fun in corners. We pushed it relatively hard on some twisty bits and found the car willing to toe the line but in the end the massive engine http://www.dunloptyres.com.my and all-wheel drive system that is biased for

Volvo needs to send the steering to elocution classes though — it hardly communicates to the driver on the limit. You just suddenly feel it lightens up as terminal understeer comes in. Actually it does whisper to the driver about what is happening on the ground but the driver needs to be more sensitive than usual to notice and understand the sound. Within the given dynamic limits of the chassis, especially in sport mode, the driver has enough space to play and enjoy the power and torque in relative safety. Let’s face it, we like our fun but we also want a large safety net and that is what the S60 offers. Since I do find the S60 T6 both annoying and charming, I guess it is the naughtiest Volvo in the showroom and I am glad that it is.

Perodua staff get pro bike tips MOTORCYCLISTS make up the largest proportion of those who are killed or injured in accidents in the country so it makes sense for Perodua to give their staff, especially the younger ones, advanced motorcycle riding classes. Perodua Sales and Perodua Sales Employees Union organised a two-day Safety Campaign and Motorcycle Expedition to Teluk Batik in July where they were given tips by motorcycle racing ace, Wazi Abdul Hamid. Wazi’s trainers from Waziboys took the participants through a short course on

safe motorcycle riding and handling. The participants also had a chance to see up close motorcycle stunts performed by the trainers from Waziboyz. Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh who flagged off the expedition at Perodua headquarters

and plant in Sungai Choh on July 16 said: “The event is timely as a majority of our 11,000 staff are Muslims and they will be joining millions of Malaysians to balik kampung to be with their loved ones for Hari Raya. “Of the 11,000 Perodua staff, about 70 per cent of

them commute to and from work by motorcycles and we care for their safety. We hope to carry out more of such campaigns in the near future. “I hope the participants will also impart what they learnt during the safety campaign to their family members and friends.”

Latar chalks up a million motorists IN less than three months, Latar Expressway has proven that the public wants and needs a faster route to connect Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Selangor as it recorded the first million vehicles earlier this month. The expressway connects Kuala Lumpur via Templer’s Park in Gombak with Ijok in Kuala Selangor via a 33km dual carriageway and on average, the entire journey can be completed in a mere 18 minutes. To put it into perspective, the journey would have taken 90 minutes through the Sungai Buloh-Kuala Selangor Federal Road 54. “Since its opening on June 23 to July 31, one million motorists passed through our four toll plazas. "The expressway has certainly proven it is welcomed by the communities here, justifying its existence to connect

many townships and villages to Rawang, Selayang, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur,” said KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway Berhad chief executive officer Amran Amir. Evidence tracked by the expressway’s state-of-the-art Intelligent Transportation System has shown that Latar Expressway has provided much needed cheer and connectivity to several townships such as Kuala Selangor, Assam Jawa, Ijok, Bestari

Jaya (Batang Berjuntai), Kota Puteri, Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, Bukit Jelutong, Sungai Buloh, Kundang, Rawang and Selayang, allowing for a faster, safer choice between the townships as well as to the cities of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. “The bulk of our traffic comes from all these townships seeking to reach Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Selayang in more efficient manners during work hours

on weekdays while weekend traffic throughput peaks have been the enthusiastic traffic coming in from Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya into these townships for leisure,” said Amran. The phenomenal throughput has also resulted in large numbers flocking to Kuala Selangor to enjoy the seafood in Pasir Penambang as well as the touristic spots at Bukit Malawati. Latar Expressway will remain toll-free until Aug 31.

BMW viral is a spam RECENTLY many motorists and fans of BMW may have received an e-mail entitled Annual BMW Series Lottery Draw. The company has since explained that the electronic mail never originated from them and it is a false viral activity. The e-mails look believable as they bear the company addresses of BMW Group Malaysia and BMW Credit (M) Sdn Bhd, and signed by a Shahida Idris. In a statement to the Press, BMW Malaysia said the online campaign is not initiated and recognised by both BMW Group Malaysia and BMW Credit and should be deemed illegal. “We would also like to affirm here that the name used in the email spam, Shahida Idris is neither an employee nor a representative of both companies, making this a fraudulent representation." BMW Malaysia also took the opportunity to remind customers and the public to be wary of such e-mails and not to entertain any similar correspondence in the future. “We apologise for the inconvenience caused

by this illegal activity but we greatly appreciate your patience and trust in our brand. We would also like to underline here that our database system is protected and that the email spam was spread randomly across the country and not via our database. “BMW takes information protection very seriously and we will continue to maintain the same practices in conducting our businesses,” the statement concluded. If you have any further enquiries about the above matter, contact BMW Voice at 1800-88-3000.

I'm just hoping more atheletes will make it to the Olympic Games — Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek

The Malay Mail Friday 12 AUGUST, 2011

Only the best

PETALING JAYA: SPORTCHECK

NSAs should do away with training squads to squash favourtism SHOULD national sports a s s o c i at i o n s ( N S A s ) do away with training squads? That seems to be the question lingering on the minds of sports officials and observers as many strongly believe national bodies should only be focused on selecting the best athletes in the country and not continue to safeguard players that train under their banner. Using football as an example, the players are selected from various States and train at Wisma FAM ahead of a major tournament or an international friendly match. The players then return to their respective clubs, allowing the national coaches to select the cream of the crop for future assignments. Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said it was time for national associations

to accept only the best players in the country. "It is better if NSAs don't have a training s qu a d. It s h ou l d b e open to all and the best athletes will then train together ahead of a major tournament," explained Kok Chi. "Associations must be open and transparent in their selection process. They must have a system. "The selection must not only be fair but seen to be fair." Kok Chi admitted certain actions by the associations seem to portray there is favouritism in play. "It would sometimes appear some associations treat certain athletes like step-children. It may not be true but it creates such a perception. "There must be fair play," he added when

met at Wisma O CM recently. Kok C hi's remarks were timely as the OCM — through the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) — are now playing cupid between indep endent doubles pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and the BA of Malaysia (BAM). The duo claimed they were sidelined by BA M f r o m c o mp e t i ng i n t he on - goi ng World Championships in London in favour of Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How despite being ranked higher. Zakry and Thien How lost to Fang Chieh MinLee Shen Mu of Taiwan in the second round of the world meet. A meeting between Teik Chai, Bin Shen, OCM and BAM is scheduled to be held next Thursday.

Chief coach demands unpaid salaries

HARUN

NATIONAL athletics chief coach Harun Rasheed has demanded seven months of unpaid salaries since January from the National Sports Council (NSC). He said the council did not give any explanation why his salary was not paid. "I do not why the NSC

are not paying me. I feel like they do not appreciate my contribution to the athletics team," he said. "However, I am committed to continue preparing the athletes for the Sea Games. After that, I will decide whether to continue coaching or resign." Harun said he had to

make withdrawals from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for his financial needs. He claimed that athletes under his tutelage were also not paid their allowances by the NSC since June while several of them were not allowed to stay at the NSC. — Bernama

Semenya out of Student Games

WORLD women's 800m champion Caster Semenya of South Africa has withdrawn from the World Student Games this month because of a back injury. Semenya was scheduled to compete at the Games in Shenzen, China, from Aug 12-23 before defending her world title in Daegu, South Korea. University Sport South Africa athletics chairman Glen Bentley said the injury was not serious. "It is only a niggle but she did not want to risk aggravating it," he said. Semenya has struggled this season. She ran 1:55.45 to win at the 2009 worlds as an 18-year-old in Berlin before she was sidelined for 11 months in a gender-test controversy. — Agencies

Steve Stricker put himself in rare company by matching the all-time low round in Major golf history with a seven-under 63 to seize the lead at the 93rd PGA Championship — AFP

ATLANTA: GOLF

EXCITED after three birdies in five holes, Tiger Woods threw caution to the wind and wound up firing his worst opening round in a Major, a seven-over 77, at the PGA Championship this morning. Former World No 1 Woods, who began on the back nine, opened with a birdie, added two more at 12 and 14 and

grabbed a share of the lead. Then reality struck. Hard. Three double bogeys hard. "Every shot I hit up to that point were all mechanical thoughts," Woods said. "I put the club in a certain position, and I was doing that and I said, 'I'm feeling good. Let's just let it go.' And it cost me the whole round." Woods, a 14-time Major

champion chasing the record 18 Major titles won by Jack Niclaus, showed how much work his game needs in his second event after a threemonth injury layoff, matching the sixth-worst round of his career. It was Woods' worst round ever at a US-based Major and matched his secondworst at any Major, his only

worse major round his epic 10-over 81 at the 2002 British Open. "I'm really angry right now," Woods said. "It's a bunch of things. I just thought, 'This is a Major and you peak for these events.' So it's just, unfortunately, I'm not at a point that I can let it go." Woods, who has slid to

30th in the rankings and gone winless since his sex scandal erupted in November of 2009, last fired so poor a first round of a 72-hole event at the 1996 Australian Open, a seven-over 79. Woods has only missed the cut twice at major tournaments, the 2009 British Open and 2006 US Open, but he is in danger of failing

to find himself among the low 70 and level in order to reach the weekend at Atlanta Athletic Club. Woods, who missed the US and British Opens as part of a three-month layoff due to left leg injuries suffered at the Masters in April, briefly shared the lead before the humbling collapse came. — AFP

WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei and Olympic champion Lin Dan moved closer to a dream final when they reached the quarterfinals of the world badminton championships in contrasting styles yesterday. C h o n g We i w a s i n supremely brilliant form in a 21-11, 21-5 victory over Park Sung-hwan, the ninth-seeded Korean, getting so completely on top that eventually the Malaysian was able to run through his entire range of tactical options. Lin, however, had to work hard to win 21-16, 21-13 against Lee Hyun-Il, the 12th seeded Korean, trailing for two-thirds of the first game. The Chinese player, often an explosive attacker whilst winning every Major title in the game, was now obliged to dig deep in defence, and to lift and clear patiently during some lengthy rallies. These two faced each other in the 2008 Olympic final and in this year's All-England Open final, and two more wins for each would give the tournament the perfect climax on Sunday. "These are my seventh world championships and every time there are many more players from different countries who are difficult to beat," commented Lin. "Today I tried my best. He was mentally very well prepared and I am glad to have won." Chong Wei's splendid success against Park was a victory over the man who had ended Lin's world title defence in Paris last year, and he was ruthless in forcing home his advantage. It was a contest up to 9-6 in the first game, during

which Lee used his gliding movement and accurately deep placements to create cumulative pressure. But after that he began to open up, risking full-on smashes and sliced overhead attacks earlier in the rallies, and finding that he could often force his way through more quickly. Chong Wei was then able to mix it up, sometimes counter-attacking, and sometimes switching between tactics, although he afterwards seemed nervous, perhaps concerned that he was peaking too soon or perhaps giving away tactical secrets to opponents. "You already know what I was doing," Chong Wei retorted, when asked if he would comment on the dazzling range of

options he displayed. Earlier he volunteered that he had been very focused during this match, and that he had played better each day during his three matches. — AFP RESULTS Men's singles Third round Lee Chong Wei (MAS) bt Park Sung-hwan (KOR) 21-11, 21-5; Lin Dan (CHN) bt L e e Hy u n - I l ( KOR ) 21-16, 21-13; Hans-Kristian Vittinghus (DEN) bt Wong Zi Lian (SIN) 21-16, 21-10; Peter Gade (DEN) bt Simon Santoso (INA) 21-18, 14-21, 21-14; Sho Sasaki (JPN) bt Du Pengyu (CHN) 10-21, 24-22, 21-10; Chen Jin (CHN) bt Ajay Jayaram (IND) 18-21, 21-12, 21-11; Tien Minh Nguyen (VIE) bt Boonsak

the southern Italian city of Bari. The 24-year-old has a strained hamstring in his right leg and the evolution of the injury will determine if he is available for Sunday's

match, Barcelona said in a statement posted on their website. His replacement during Spain's match against Italy, Busquets, has a bruised rib on his right side and is also

in doubt for the match, it added. The second-leg of the Spanish Super Cup will be played at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium on Aug 17. — AFP

Cesc replacement in Gunners' sights ARSENAL are moving to replace Cesc Fabregas with Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Jadson, according to reports. The Gunners are on the verge of losing their captain to Barcelona and it seems Arsene Wenger has wasted no time in trying to secure a replacement. The little Brazilian is already in London with his agent, waiting for the Gunners to agree a fee with his current club. With the arrivals of Gervinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ryo Miyaichi, it seems unlikely the Frenchman will add more than one midfielder to his squad.

Bayern's Ribery wants three wins in a row FRENCH midfielder Franck Ribery this morning challenged Bavarian giants Bayern Munich to beat VfL Wolfsburg, FC Zurich and Hamburg in their next three games to get their season back on track. Bayern were stunned last Sunday when they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Borussia Moenchengladbach and face 2009 German league champions Wolfsburg away on Saturday. The Bavarians also face FC Zurich in a first-leg Champions League qualifier on Wednesday in Munich, before taking on Hamburg in the German league next weekend, and Ribery has set his side the task of winning the lot. "It's very important to win at Wolfsburg, but we want to win three straight games," Ribery said at a news conference in Munich. Ribery came off the bench against 'Gladbach last weekend after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season training, but says he is ready to face Wolves. "I have trained well since the defeat," he said. "I was hurt for a week, but I had prepared well for the season ahead before that." The 28-year-old French star said he was working well with Bayern's new coach Jupp Heynckes, having not always seen eye-to-eye with his predecessor Louis van Gaal. "I trust him (Heynckes). I am more motivated," said the Bayern midfielder, who said working under Van Gaal for two years had been "very hard for me without a lot of fun." — AFP

Real swagger Ronaldo and Co look too hot for Barca in Super Cup

HOLA! Real Madrid are hot favourites when Los Blancos clash with bitter rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, beginning with the first-leg at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. The return-leg will be at Nou Camp on Aug 17. The Super Cup is the traditional pre-season curtain raiser played between Primera Liga champions and Copa del Rey winners — Barca and Real respectively in this case. Interestingly, the Catalans have never beaten Real when it comes to the Super Cup on the four occasions these giants have met — in 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1997. This trend is likely to continue this time, and Barca fans must take this in their stride. Barca, who are also last season's Champions League winners, have not been impressive in pre-season where they were even beaten 4-1 by Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara in Miami recently. Never mind the fact that manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola was without his star players. Barca were not playing the kind of performance they are renowned for and appeared lethargic. In short, they are not well-prepared to contest for this silverware and are likely

to present Real with early bragging rights. Lionel Messi and new-signing Alexis Sanchez have also only joined training last week after their Copa America exertions last month. Messi has voiced his intention to play on Sunday, though but he may see himself starting from the bench. This should also be the case for Sanchez, who played for Chile in their 1-1 draw with France in a friendly on Wednesday. Barca will go to the Bernabeu with a makeshift emergency defence because of injuries to Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Maxwell. Puyol is still recovering after a knee operation, while both Maxwell and Pique suffered muscle injuries. In addition, rightback Dani Alves and midfielder Javier Mascherano — like Messi and Sanchez — has only done a week of light training because of the Copa America. Playmaker Xavi is also out because of the recurrence of a

muscle injury in his right leg that plagued him throughout the first-half of last season. But are these ready-made excuses? This should be on the minds of Real fans, but excuses or not, they just want to see Real win, and in style as well, which can be the case this time. Cristiano Ronaldo and company were banging in the goals like there was no tomorrow on Real's tour of China recently, and the Portuguese ace would love to humiliate Barca whether the Catalans are ready or not. He simply can't forget what happened last season when Real were thrashed 5-0 by Barca in a league match at Nou Camp. Then a Messi-inspired Barca dumped them out of the Champions League the semi-final stage. This would the best time to hit back at the Catalans. However, there is not so good news for avid Primera Liga fans all over the world. The Association of Spanish

Footballers (AFE) announced Primera and Segunda Division players will go on strike in the first two weekends of the new season. The players want a wage guarantee fund in case clubs become insolvent and won't play until a collective bargaining agreement has been signed between the AFE and the individual clubs. "We are unanimous and firm in our decision to call a strike," said AFE president Luis Rubiales. "All the players in the Primera and Segunda Division support this decision. The competitions will not start until a new agreement between the league and the players has been signed. "We are behind all of Europe in this matter. The current situation is very lamentable. We are not asking for more money, but want contracts to be respected. All the players deserve the same treatment, regardless of the team they play for." Several Spanish clubs are plagued by financial trouble and struggled to pay their players wages in recent years. Mallorca were even banned from playing Europa League last season due to their financial worries. Times are really bad. Adios!

ARSENAL representatives have opened talks with Birmingham City over defender Scott Dann, and hope to conclude transfer discussions before the first game of the season. Sources close to both clubs have confirmed that negotiations are now underway regarding the 24-year-old, who is valued around £8m. Arsene Wenger is said to be reluctant to part with more than £5m for the player but could settle on a figure of around £6m plus at least £2m in performancerelated fees. Dann's wage demands are also unlikely to rock the boat too much, which would facilitate a swift conclusion to the transfer.

Party boys banned for life CESENA striker Adrian Mutu and West Brom defender Gabriel Tamas have been banned by Romania for life after going drinking before a friendly against San Marino. The two players have been expelled for life from the national team," Romania coach Victor Piturca said after his side beat San Marino 1-0. "It's a pity but rules are strict and they should have known it," he added. Mutu and Tamas had gone out partying on Monday evening despite strict orders from the coach. "We understand Piturca's decision," Mutu said.

WIGAN ATHLETIC and Wolverhampton Wanderers are seen by many as relegation candidates in the new season. Mailsport's MUSTAPHA KAMARUDDIN looks at the possibility of these two teams surviving yet again.

Hail Ali Goalkeeper Al-Habsi set to continue his form as Wigan battle on

WIGAN are playing some entertaining football under manager Roberto Martinez although he did not get the desired results last season when they finished 16th in the Premier League. And the Spaniard is not about to discard his approach for the new season, where the Latics are again touted to be one of the favourites to be relegated. French winger Charles N'Zogbia's departure to Aston Villa for £9.5m (RM46m) is one of the main reasons for critics to suggest Wigan are staring at relegation. But what they fail to realise is the confidence and self belief that Martinez has instilled in his squad. Wigan have been unbeaten in pre-season after two successful trips to Sweden and Austria against a range of different oppositions. They have also looked strong in England with a 3-1 away win against local rivals Preston North End. A pro du c t ive pre - s e a son, without the services of N'Zogbia, saw 20-year-old Nigerian winger Victor Moses playing an influential role in attack. Moses, who can also operate as a striker, scored two goals against Preston and also got

the winner against top Spanish club Villareal. The win against the 'Yellow Submarine' will be a huge boost to Wigan, and is considered as a big scalp considering Villareal are to take part in the Champions League in the coming season. But the signing of last season's heroic goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi on a four-year deal could also prove crucial for the Latics' campaign. "Wigan Athletic means so much to me. This is the club that first gave me the opportunity to play regular football in the Premier League and that's an opportunity I will never forget," the Omani told the club's website. Wigan fans were delighted with the capture of the club's Player-of-the-Year last season. He was on loan from Bolton. Anyway, things could have been much better for the Latics last time out if only the strikeforce had converted chances, resulting in them becoming one of the league's lowest goal scorers. C onor Sammon, Hugo Rodallega and Franco Di Santo are the only out and out strikers. Maybe Martinez should try and sign one more to ease the problem before the transfer

O'Hara and Johnson show for Wolves NEW signings midfielder Jamie O'Hara and central defender Roger Johnson will make Wolverhampton Wanderers a better team than the one who finished 17th in the Premier League last season. O'Hara, after a loan stint from Tottenham last season, signed on a permanent basis. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder can create space for the strikers and is a freekick specialist. Johnson, on the other hand, was signed from relegated Birmingham. This is a massive capture for manager Mick McCarthy and the club as Johnson, standing at 6ft 3in, was a superb

performer in the heart of Birmingham's defence last season and brings strength

and experience with him. And the 28-year-old has already been named the new

captain and is surely the first name on McCarthy's team sheet. Wolves should be brimming with confidence entering the new season. This is because they have been impressive in pre-season friendlies and have beaten Celtic, Ipswich and Real Zaragoza. As expected, O'Hara and Johnson are the two key players here and should be expected to continue in their central roles as the focal point of the Wolves attack and defence respectively. Wolves have players like Stephen Hunt and Karl Henry, who have loads of experience as well in midfield to help them in their bit to finish between

12th and 15th spot. Manager McCarthy is in optimistic mood and reckons his summer signings could even propel Wolves to a tophalf finish. "I hope there is a bit of optimism around," he told the club's website. "We've signed Jamie, who is better now having had a pre-season, and Roger has made a difference straight away. They look like they have made us better. "I have seen people putting us in the top 10, I saw the headlines the other day. And I don't see why not. Seconds out, round one ... and now watch out for another exciting season

IF last Sunday's Community Shield is anything to go by, Manchester United have already established themselves as the team to beat this season. As the curtain prepares to rise on the 2011-2012 Premier League campaign, expectations in and around Old Trafford will be sky high, and United will be brimming with confidence, having ultimately silenced their "noisy neighbours" at Wembley. Big spending Manchester City took a two-goal lead into the break, somewhat undeservedly, most people would say, and yet were undone by a spectacular second-half resurgence from Alex Ferguson's men, with all the summer signings making a significant impact. Ashley Young was industrious and effective, and displayed plenty of the versatility that has made his 'best position' difficult to categorise, while Phil Jones looked very solid at the back, and keeper David de Gea, despite possibly being at fault for City's second goal, grew in assurance as the game progressed. The revelation, however, was Chris Smalling, who looked "to the manor born" at rightback, and could well have solved one of Ferguson's niggling problems

in the space of 90 very accomplished minutes. There should be honourable mentions as well for Tom Cleverley, who showed just how useful a loan spell and regular first team football can be, by stamping his mark on the second-half, and showing Michael Carrick a thing or two about central midfield dynamism, and Danny Welbeck, another loanee who appears to have learnt well under the tutelage of former Old Trafford stalwart Steve Bruce. Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of United's overall performance is the fact that the average age of the 11 players who featured in the second-half at Wembley, was 22. Having achieved the highly unlikely last season — winning the title with not the strongest squad in the world, and after some seriously mediocre performances — United have already laid down a marker for

this upcoming one. They are the defending champions, and they are the team to beat, a message that Roberto Mancini would have received loudly and clearly last Sunday. City did what they had to do last season, in light of the enormous amounts of money the owners have put into the club. A top four finish was mandatory (most pundits suggest that Mancini's continued tenure was dependent on it) and the FA Cup was something of a bonus. Clearly City are headed in the right direction, and they ought to be a force to be reckoned with this time round, simply in terms of their playing personnel. In my opinion though, they still have a way to go before they can do what United did last season — play badly and win. More importantly perhaps, City are even further from displaying the indomitable spirit and self-belief that character-

ised United's performance last Sunday — essential ingredients when it comes to mounting a genuine and sustained title challenge. While Chelsea went toe to toe with United for much of last season, they fell away when it mattered most — testimony to what most pundits suggested was a lack of squad strength in depth. This summer, the club have spent little on new talent, and the lack of faith put in Chelsea's youngsters last season means that the likes of Josh McEachran, Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Aanholt have had insufficient top level experience to hit the ground running in the forthcoming campaign. In Andre Villas-Boas however, they have a dynamic young manager who, seemingly, has everything going for him. Having been mentored by the late Sir Bobby Robson, and Jose Mourinho, he simply oozes confidence and composure, while his fluent English and good looks will instantly endear him to the English media. What may delight Chelsea fans even more is the fact that he has a reputation for demanding attractive football, while never losing sight of the ultimate

prize and the ultimate objective — winning games. His, and Chelsea's progress this season, will be fascinating to behold. And whither Arsenal? With no silverware for six years, the pressure is certainly on Arsene Wenger, and with the apparently impending departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, the Gunners will be losing their two best players. It's been a troubled time for the club, who may head into the new season with the prospect of having to build a team around the relatively inexperienced Jack Wilshere, and Wenger's future will be speculated upon from their very first kick of the ball. It would take a brave person to back Wenger to confound us all. Last season's top four prepare to do battle once again, knowing full well that Liverpool and Tottenham have every right to include themselves in what must now be referred to as 'The Big Six'. Savouring the anticipation of a new Premier League season is always one of the delights of summer. It is the best league in the world, and I don't say that simply because I have the privilege of presenting it.

Quick resolution Wenger expects Fabregas decision soon

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger expects Cesc Fabregas’ future to be sorted out “very quickly”, with a decision over the captain’s dream of returning to Barcelona to be reached by this weekend’s Premier League kick-off. “That is completely the truth,” Wenger told arsenal. com. “We hope it will be sorted out very quickly one way or the other. We’ll know very quickly.” British media yesterday claimed the Gunners had accepted a €36m (RM153.6m) offer for the Spanish midfielder from the European champions, Fabregas’ boyhood club. His likely departure ends years of speculation surrounding the 24-year-old World Cup winner, who had made no secret of his desire to one day return to the Nou Camp. Several outlets reported that Fabregas would forfeit €5m in compensation he is contractually entitled to because of Arsenal’s decision to sell him to Barcelona. Barcelona had tabled a bid for Fabregas last summer only to have it rejected by Arsenal, who insisted the player was not for sale. However Arsenal’s hardline stance did not deter Bar-

celona, who duly resumed their pursuit of the player this year. Wenger had initially insisted he expected Fabregas to stay but has become increasingly resigned to losing the player. He had urged Fabregas to show commitment last month to avoid destabilising Arsenal’s pre-season. “If Fabregas is committed to this club and wants to stay, no money will get him out of here,” Wenger said before the Emirates Cup. “We are not in a position where we need to sell our players. We are not looking after money. “He cares about this club and that’s why I hope we can keep him.” Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Lee Dixon believes Wenger will be making the correct decision if he lets both Fabregas and Nasri leave the club. “You’re better off getting £60m for two players who don’t want to stay and spending the money wisely,” he told BBC Sport. “There is no doubt they are top quality players and they will be missed, but it is important that supporters and everyone at the club remembers that the cannon on the chest is more important than anybody.”

MIAMI: FOOTBALL

Fifa open ethics probe on 16 officials

WORLD football’s governing body Fifa said they have opened ethics proceedings against 16 Caribbean football federation officials, following an initial probe into cash-forvotes allegations. The cases are related to the meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on May 10 and 11, where it was alleged that Qatari football official Mohammed bin Hammam handed out bribes to Caribbean members of Concacaf – the regional body for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Hammam has been banned for

life by Fifa but has protested his innocence along with ex-Concacaf president Jack Warner, of Trinidad, who resigned before the investigation was completed. One of the 16 officials — Colin Klass of Guyana — has already been provisionally suspended from taking part in any football-related activity, Fifa said. Fifa said the cases were “apparent violations of the Code of Ethics” and the governing body did not rule out opening more cases if fresh evidence is uncovered. “It is important to note that the

investigations are still ongoing and it is therefore possible that further proceedings could be opened in the future,” said the statement. The allegations, made after Concacaf’s American general secretary Chuck Blazer reported the claims to Fifa, came shortly before the re-election of Fifa president Sepp Blatter. Hammam was challenging Blatter in the June 1 election but withdrew before the vote. Several Caribbean officials described receiving brown envelopes containing US$40,000 (RM 120,000) in cash.

The 16 officials facing investigation by Fifa are: David Hinds and Mark Bob Forde (Barbados); Franka Pickering and Aubrey Liburd (British Virgin Islands); David Frederick (Cayman Islands); Osiris Guzman and Felix Ledesma (Dominican Republic); Colin Klass and Noel Adonis (Guyana); Yves Jean-Bart (Haiti); Anthony Johnson (St. Kitts and Nevis); Patrick Mathurin (St Lucia); Joseph Delves and Ian Hypolite (St Vincent and the Grenadines); Richard Groden (Trinidad and Tobago) and Hillaren Frederick (US Virgin Islands) — Reuters
