By PEARL LEE pearl@mmail.com.my HOW much was actually spent on the planting of fruit trees at the Taman Dusun Bandar? This is the poser raised over the amount of funds actually used to plant the trees, which were supposed to be the main attraction at the RM17.2 million “city orchard park” in Jalan Bellamy. Following The Malay Mail’s front-page expose on the lack of fruit trees at the 7.7ha park - despite it being due to open in two months - the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, in a statement yesterday, disclosed that from the RM17.2 million budget, RM2.6 million was allocated towards the purchase and planting of trees, as stated in a bill of quantity. The ministry claimed that from the RM2.6 million, approximately RM1.5 million had been paid to the project contractor solely for treeplanting works. This, however, has raised more questions than answers, as Zikhtar Associates Sdn Bhd, the contractor appointed to build the park, had earlier stated that they spent only RM595,000 on trees. Observers have noted that the math doesn’t add up, and the authorities are now attempting to establish where the remainder of the money

has gone. Zikhtar Associates director Zulbainoor Zulkelfee had been quoted as saying that they had asked for more funds from City Hall to plant the trees. Zulbainoor had stated that apart from tree-planting, the bulk of the money was also spent on earthworks, landscaping, building works, internal drainage works and lighting

Hotline

It was also reported that the request was rejected by KL Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, who believed that enough funds had been disbursed. The ministry also claimed yesterday that as of April 30, 2010, they had already paid 86.5 per cent (approximately RM14.9 million) of the total RM17.2 million owed to the contractor. The money muddle, however, is merely one among many problems affecting the orchard park. Chief among its more immediate concerns is the apparent lack of readiness to enable it to become a full-blown fruit orchard by opening day. The Malay Mail had reported that despite the sizable budget, the park had little to show in terms of fruit trees. Our checks at the site had showed that the fruit trees there were mostly young saplings. Botanists have also criticised the poor planning involved in setting up the park, but noted that all was not lost, provided the authorities sought expert help. Klang Valley residents meanwhile, panned the project as an unnecessary waste.

'Total failure' RAs label orchard a 'shame', 'atrocious', 'disappointing' By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my

THE Taman Dusun Bandar "orchard park" project has failed to appeal to local residents and communities even before its slated launch in two months’ time. Yesterday, The Malay M a i l frontpaged the 7.7ha tropical paradise dotted with rows of fruit trees, which, after four years and despite millions spent on development, hardly resembled the urban oasis it set out to be. Shockingly, only RM600,000 from the RM17.2 million allocation was spent on fruit trees. Ta m a n Ya r l R e s i d e n t s ' Association secretary Ho Khai Hong said the condition of the orchard park was disappointing. “The park project was kept under wraps. I think it’s an embarrassment and no one wants to bring

it up. To think that it costs RM17m is atrocious.” Ho said there were no residents nearby the area except the dead at a Chinese cemetery behind the park. Gasing Indah Rukun Tetangga chairman Alfred Chuah said the "fruitless" RM17m orchard was "nothing shocking" and was a failed project. “Plenty of money was allocated and not properly handled. This needs to be changed if we want to progress into a developed country.” Chuah said an orchard within the city was a good move but that it was a shame its development was not seriously looked into. “It’s sad that even after four years, they still could not grow a rambutan tree,” said Chuah. He said the launch of the urban oasis should be delayed so that the state of the park could be improved. “Hopefully, this idea can be introduced to all parks and not just in Jalan Bellamy. It should be promoted and encouraged rather than confined to just one place.” B and ar Sr i D amans ara Residents' Association president Ravindran Raman Kutty told The Paper That Cares the idea was only

"great on paper". “It’s a waste of taxpayers' money and a failure on the part of the parties concerned. The project is poorly executed. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission should audit the whole thing and reveal the findings publicly.”

In response, the ministry claimed the contractor was required to plant trees of different species at different heights. Small trees were also supposed to be planted in between as these trees grow faster. "It would take a minimum of five years for these trees to grow and mature," said a ministry spokesman, who also noted that "mature" did not necessarily mean that the trees would start bearing fruits. The spokesman added a possible way of resolving the problem of the lack of fruit trees was to engage the help of corporate companies. "The ministry, via City Hall, will encourage companies in KL to contribute towards the planting of trees at the park. This can be part of their corporate social responsibility programmes (CSR)," said the spokesman, adding this would be in line with the goal of transforming KL into a "green city" by 2020. "The ministry, along with City Hall, would also check the contract to ensure the works scope has been fully completed by the contractor. "We will also direct the contractor to replace existing dead trees and trees which had not been properly cared for."

Down with dead tree

SAD VIEW: The sorry state of trees near the City Hall office

WHILE The Malay Mail had earlier last week discovered a fair share of dead trees at the City Orchard Park in Jalan Bellamy, our second visit over the weekend revealed some had been removed and replaced. During our first visit, we found a dead palm tree next to a lake opposite City Hall's administration office within the park. But on our second visit days later, the palm tree had been chopped down.

A few dead mango trees which were shriveled and brown had also been removed and new trees planted in the same spot. Also during the second visit, we found several City Hall workers busy clearing the area and removing old leaves and branches from the roof of the administration building.

THE MALAY MAIL team revisited Taman Dusun Bandar with a group of experts in agriculture, soil and landscaping, who all agreed the place is a far cry from an actual orchard park and raised questions over the planting methods used. Dr Tan Swee Lan, former research officer for the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), said the fruit trees were planted too close to each other. "For a tree which would grow about 20 feet high, there needs to be a distance of 15 feet between the tree next to it but this is not the case here." She said ideally, each spot a tree is planted should be in a hole about one metre-deep and one metre-wide, which is not how the trees here were planted. She said although the soil in the area is clay, if the trees were planted correctly with proper drainage, the fruit trees would grow well. Tan, also president of the Selangor and Federal Territory

WET: Moss growing on the soil due to improper drainage

Gardening Society, said proper compost should be mixed with soil and rock phosphate, and the correct amount of sand added for drainage. The theme for the orchard park appeared confusing as well. "There should be dedicated areas for plants of the same species. "For example you can have an area dedicated to different types of mango trees. This is not the case here as you see mango trees planted between ciku and starfruit trees."

STRANGE PRIORITIES: More seems to have been spent on the bathrooms and decor than the trees (INSET) Tan

Tan said she did not know about the orchard park until The Paper That Cares alerted her to it. "This place doesn't reflect an orchard park. It's a shame to learn so little of the allocation was spent on the trees and instead, a bulk of the money was spent on things like water features and buildings." Another member of the society who accompanied Tan said although clay impedes root growth, it is not a setback as long as there is good groundwork preparation. The member, who declined to be named, said trees in the area appeared to be tainted with disease. Some have been eaten by insects and caterpillars. "From what I see today, there is already moss on the soil and you can see there is no proper drainage here despite there being a surface draining trap. Moss only forms because the soil is wet." Another member of the society said there were a lot of ants in the area.

"Those responsible must find the nest and destroy it as it will pose a problem in the long run."

IS the haze making a comeback? Many believe so, despite Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of between 0 to 100, falling in the "good" and "moderate" categories throughout Malaysia as of 5pm yesterday, as featured on the Department of Environment’s website. Even so, not all are convinced as several Klang Valley residents The Malay Mail spoke to yesterday said the skies have looked the worse for wear over the past few days. Direct foreign maid hire proves to be simple, economical

HIRING a foreign maid without going through maid agencies is a piece of cake — and will save you a lot of dough as well. As long as one has a candidate on the other side, just make the necessary travel arrangements, complete a series of immigration-related tasks and the maid will be your legal domestic worker. The Malay Mail paid a visit to the Immigration Department branch at Pusat Bandar Damansara to learn

the procedures for hiring a maid without using an agent. An immigration counter personnel explained: “The individual must come into this country first and obtain a visitor’s pass which is valid for 30 days. Within that period of time, the prospective employer must complete a set of forms inside this booklet. The maidto-be will also have to undergo a medical check-up with any registered clinic under Fomena Sdn Bhd.” He handed over the booklet

Hiring more male teachers could resolve shortage THE Ministry of Education believes increasing the intake of male teachers may alleviate the teacher shortage problem due to the newly-lengthened maternity leave of 90 days but it should not be the only reason to induct more males into the teaching profession. “We do try to strike a balance but we don’t want to take in more male teachers just to deal with the shortage of female teachers having extended maternity leave,” said Deputy Education Minister Datuk

WEE: We try to strike a balance

Wee Ka Siong. “We want to hire more males to become disciplinary teachers and to handle extra-curricular and sports activities. What the ministry really needs now is to

have extra allocation for substitute teachers to fill the void caused by those going on maternity leave. Hiring male teachers is more for the long run.” Wee also said the ministry was seeking to strike a balance in the ratio of male and female teachers. Meanwhile, the National Union of the Teaching Profession secretarygeneral Loke Yim Pheng is pleading with the Education Ministry to provide schools with allocations for hiring substitute teachers. “Substitute teachers are easy to get actually, but I have received complaints from principals and headmasters that their schools cannot afford to pay the wages,” said Loke, adding that schools

suffer the most when several teachers go off on maternity leave simultaneously. “We hope the government can provide an allotment for this. Perhaps, the parent-teacher associations can also chip in to help. We should make this a win-win situation.” Parent Action Group for Education president Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said hiring more male teachers may not be the best solution as the emphasis should be on quality and not quantity. During the Budget 2011 announcement last year, the government extended maternity leave from 60 days to 90 days.

THE authorities are making a last-ditch effort to resolve the issue surrounding the Damansara 21 project in Medan Damansara which has been stalled for three years. It is learnt that the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall are organising a round-table discussion with the Damansara 21 developer, SDB Damansara Sdn Bhd, this week to thrash out matters.

A source said the ministry, in a "last-ditch effort", will discuss the demands made by SDB Damansara which include the reinstatement of a number of units as agreed in the original development order (DO) which was approved by DBKL in 2008, as well as a lawsuit by the developer against DBKL over the DO. "The intention is to ensure that no one ends up with the short end of the stick," said the source. However, Selangor Dredging

Berhad's (SDB) communications and corporate affairs manager Yeoh Guan Jin said they were not aware of the impending meeting. "SDB Damansara Sdn Bhd has yet to receive any official correspondence from the authorities over the said meeting. Nevertheless, we are open to any negotiation which can speed things along. " The Damansara 21 project was approved in 2008. But owing to a

series of accidents and natural diasasters that befell it from June of the same year, the ministry issued a stop-work order on Dec 6, 2008. Since then, the project had been at a standstill.

KL, PJ residents hopeful of getting MRT to go underground By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

WHEN the final alignment of the MyRapid Transit (MRT) system was unveiled last Friday, residents of Bukit Bandaraya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail in KL and Bandar Utama and Mutiara Damansara in Petaling Jaya were dismayed to find their requests for it to run underground did not materialise. The Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line, the first of three MRT lines, was made public with changes to the initial alignment after taking into account public feedback, but none of the changes contained lowering elevated lines underground. For the past few months, residents of the affected areas intensively lobbied the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the government to consider taking the MRT line underground in their areas, citing reasons such as traffic congestion and noise pollution. TTDI Residents Association (RA) chairman Mohd

They didn’t agree with our suggestion although they did agree with

one of our suggestions to re-align the tracks from running parallel with Persiaran Zaaba.” Mohd Hatim said they hoped to receive an explanation from SPAD soon as to why they decided not to run the tracks underground. Bandar Utama RA chairman Lim See Meng said he will discuss with RA members regarding their next move.

“We might write to SPAD or even the Prime Minister for an explanation as to why our section of the MRT was not going underground,” he said. Bukit Bandaraya RA chairman Mumtaz Ali said it was disappointing SPAD did not get back to them as promised and instead went on to announce the final alignment. “They asked for our feedback which we did. They promised to come back to us but they didn’t,” he said, adding they will seek from SPAD an explanation. The Sg Buloh-Kajang Line was put on public display from Feb 14 to May 14 to gather public feedback. Based on that, SPAD reduced the initial 35 stations to 31 stations. Out of the 51km length of the Sg Buloh-Kajang Line, 41.5km are elevated lines while 9.5km runs underground. The project will start in November and is expected to be completed by 2016.

HomeGuru up in second place in record time

IN less than a year since going online here, newcomer property website HomeGuru has grown to be a force to be reckoned with in the property scene. Since launch of www.homeguru.com.my in November last year, it has remarkably propelled itself to second spot among Malaysia’s property listing sites today, with over two million page views. And by June 30, HomeGuru amassed 71,000 listings of residential and commercial properties available for sale and rent. “It is a significant increase from the 50,000 listings we recorded in January,” PropertyGuru group chief executive officer Steve Melhuish told The Malay Mail. He said the group invested RM3 million on marketing and branding in its effort to build a presence in the Malaysian property scene. “The investment was essential in making people know the HomeGuru brand. We want people to think of HomeGuru when they think of property,” said Melhuish, adding that HomeGuru has intensively advertised on public buses, taxis, newspapers and television. PropertyGuru is a Singapore-based company that owns Malaysia's HomeGuru. com.my, as well as Singapore’s PropertyGuru.com.sg, Thailand’s DDproperty.com and Indonesia’s Rumah.com. It started in 2006 with PropertyGu-ru.com.sg in Singapore, and is currently the leading property web portal in the island republic. Melhuish said the company wanted to provide customers with an alternative credible property listing website in Malaysia.

“When we came in last year we researched on whether Malaysia is a good market to get into. We found customers wanted more choices,” he said. “As we are successful in other markets, we felt strongly positioned to adapt what we’ve done in those markets and bring it to Malaysia and provide a strong credible competitor to the existing portals.” Melhuish said HomeGuru’s strength lay in quality content as well as usability of website. “We focused on moderation of content. We try to ensure there are no dubious listings from our advertisers, because if we do, we get complaints from customers,” he said. “We have an editorial team who ensures we have good editorial content. We publish property news articles, data analysis and market researches for the benefit of our customers. Another of our strength is in usability of our website. Based on feedback from our users, whether they be advertisers or home buyers, they say they find our portal easier to use than our competitors.” Melhuish said advertisers enjoy HomeGuru’s money back guarantee feature. “If for any reason our advertisers feel they are not satisfied with our service, we give them their money back if they complain within a month, no questions asked.”

TWITTER YOUR S@Y Fat can be fabulous too By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my twitter.com/mistycheaz WEIGHT, or more precisely, being fat, has always been an issue not just for individuals but especially those in showbiz, as lead roles tend to go to those who are slimmer while fat people are usually type-cast for comedic roles. Do "fat" talents here have the chance to shine as much as those who are not, or do they have to struggle more to succeed? Using Twitter to obtain feedback, here are some reactions to this writer at @mistycheaz. Some of the tweets have been modified, without altering the intent of the messages.

Actress faces near-death experience while performing stunt By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my

IT comes with the job! While audiences are thrilled by deathdefying scenes in martial arts movies, little do they realise that sometimes the actors get hurt doing the stunts themselves.

@nadiahyayah: I like Adibah Noor. She's got a very good voice. Problem is, some Malaysians don't know how to appreciate such artistes.

@amrule: Yes... that's reality! It's not discrimination but that's how it works. You have to look good and fabulous! Fatties are not "it". Too bad...reality check!

PRIMED FOR ACTION: Hui in a typical martial arts pose

@MirulNasron: Weight is NOT and NEVER has been an issue. Talent comes in different shapes and sizes. Music lovers nowadays appreciate talent rather than an artiste's wardrobe size. Several not-soskinny singers have made it in showbiz and this is testament you don't have to look 'anorexic' to be accepted as an artiste or singer in Malaysia.

@rizmanruzaini: Size is not the issue, the way u carry urself is more important!

@wenkt: They definitely have to struggle a lot more... I mean the fatter ones.

@mummyjuju: It's 2011. Discrimination against weight does not exist lah. We have A LOT of talented artistes who are NOT size zero.

Such has been the case for awardwinning Hong Kong actress Kara Hui who, while filming new kung fu actioner Wuxia, had several perilous experiences including a seriously injured knee. "There was a scene where I was fighting between six cows. Suddenly two cows went wild and

rammed into me and I felt a chill and thought I would be killed," said China-born Hui, 51, a Manchu descendant. She is highly respected for performing most of her stunts in her 35-year movie career which kicked off in 1976 with Challenge Of The Masters. In another scene, she and co-star Donnie Yen, who will turn 48 on July 27, had to run on top of roofs of ancient Yunnan houses some 2,800 metres above sea level. "At the end of the houses was a drop-down cliff and Yen, who was running ahead of me, kept looking back because he worried I could not stop in time and would fall off the roof. "Happily for both of us, there was no mishap." But a third perilous experience resulted in injuries for Hui who has won Best Actress twice at the Hong Kong Film Awards, starting at the

1 massive jam Residents frustrated by chaotic traffic at 1 Utama

THE 1 Utama Shopping Centre may be a shopping haven for many, but for Bandar Utama residents, the traffic congestion is a daily frustration. Readers have alerted Hotline to the situation, citing "bad and chaotic traffic", especially along Lebuh Bandar Utama between the mall's old and new wings. It has been pointed out that the road, which leads to the entrance and exit of the mall's basement parking, is between two traffic lights over a short distance, hence congestion is inevitable. "Many cars double-park along the road and there are taxis picking up and dropping off passengers as well," says shopper Felicia Hew, 32. Bandar Utama resident Hani Zulfikli, 44, says when exiting the car park, many motorists cut across several lanes to make a U-turn at the traffic lights, adding to the chaos. Worse, the shopping centre has placed traffic dividers on the main road to direct cars into it. Motorists stop next to the dividers to drop off and pick up passengers, causing traffic to build up. Passengers, on the other hand, continue to wait at the side of the road for their transport to arrive.

YAP, of Kuala Lumpur, has a fixed deposit account with CIMB Bank where the interest is due on the 26th of each month. The 53-year-old tells Hotline that if the date falls on a weekend or a public holiday, interest is not credited into the account and sometimes, it is only credited in the evening of the next working day. "In this day of Internet banking and ATMs, this makes a lot of difference as the customer may want the money on the day itself." YAP says when she called CIMB to enquire, she was told this is because the interest has

Uncalled for phone Internet service SURAYA SAM claims there is an unjustified Internet charge being imposed on her by Celcom. She says it happened when she replaced her SIM card after her handphone was stolen recently. "My phone only has basic functions, far from being today's latest model. Imagine my shock to learn I'm being charged for Internet connection," SURAYA tells Hotline. She claims to only know how to make and receive calls. SURAYA also says her monthly bills have never exceeded RM20 for several years. She wants Celcom to clarify.

● A SPOKESMAN for Celcom Axiata Berhad's corporate communications division says an investigation revealed SURAYA's mobile phone is able to support GPRS connection and 3G service. "Our system also shows the 3G service was activated on May 15 from the customer’s mobile number. "Following her complaint, we have informed the customer via phone on our findings." The spokesman says

Celcom has advised SURAYA to reset her mobile phone Internet settings by calling Celcom's technical help desk to avoid accidental activation of the Internet service in future. "As a gesture of goodwill, we have also offered the customer a RM250 waiver for her bill on May 28." When contacted, SURAYA acknowledges receiving the call from Celcom on the waiver but she insists her phone does not have the 3G feature.

Hospital stay covered by policy AFTER suffering a fall in her bathroom last April, NABILA ABU SAMAH of Cheras has been wanting to check with her insurer, ING Insurance, if she can make a claim under her policy. "Three weeks after my fall, I felt pain around my spinal area and couldn't sit or walk more than an hour. I went to the clinic and was referred to a hospital," says the 26-year-old. She was admitted to Gleneagles Medical Centre from May 3 to 7 for a slipped disc. "I'm resting at home but still undergoing physiotherapy at the medical

centre as an outpatient. I'm wondering if I can make a claim under the policy and how." NABILA says ING Insurance has been taking longer than she expected to respond to her enquiry, which she made several weeks ago. "How long do I need to wait to check on my policy status? This is not the kind of service customers expect from their insurer after paying every month without fail." She says her case may not be as traumatising as others but, as a customer, she feels she should be treated the same.

ING Insurance Berhad general insurance operations head Sarala Puvanesan says: "We wish to advise NABILA her recent admission to Gleneagles Medical Centre due to her slipped disc condition is claimable. The ING Insurance Personal Accident plan will provide her with the daily hospital cash benefit of RM100 per day throughout her admission period in the hospital."

Sarala says the company emailed NABILA after being informed by Hotline. "We have advised NABILA to submit the required documents including her claim form, medical report as well as copies of her admission bill and MyKad and we will expedite her claim accordingly." She thanks NABILA for bringing up the matter and apologises for the delay.

Taking the risk I SYMPATHISE with the widow of taxi driver Baharudin Ahmad, who died after taking part in Saturday’s rally at KLCC, for her loss. Even so, I think those who wish to be a part of such demonstrations should know the risks involved in joining a crowd like this where anything can happen, as stated by several leaders before the rally. To be fair, the police repeatedly warned the public of the consequences of taking part in the rally. Please understand that in such a chaotic situation, the police are not going to make announcements such as “Ahem... those allergic to tear gas, please go away. Those with health problems, please go home now as we are about to fire tear gas and

spray water on the crowd”. Let us not make rallying and, consequently, violence a part of the Malaysian scene. In my opinion, there are more effective ways to voice one’s displeasure. In the end, the memorandum did not get submitted at all, so

IT was such a shame to read about the losses incurred by traders who had no part in the protest that took place in the city on Saturday. I would advise the traders

HEARTWARMING. That is the feeling I got after reading ‘Crimebusting residents’ in Hotline yesterday, which highlighted the efforts by the PPR Rasa Permai Residents Association in tackling cases of car thefts. It is indeed endearing to read the residents have banded together to bust crime in their neighbourhood after they claim reports to City Hall and the police proved futile. Although I agree that the rakyat living at the PPR should be grateful for the low-cost housing, the authorities, too, must adhere to their responsibility of ensuring proper maintenance and security at the flats. It is my opinion that the residents should send the bill for cost incurred due to their efforts to City Hall and the police, or at least get a tax rebate for this. Jamie

Street rally not the answer WHILE I empathise with the widow of Baharudin Ahmad for her loss, this is, unfortunately, one of the consequences of street demonstrations, whether held legally or illegally. Anyone who attends a street demonstration does so with the understanding that the personal risks are high and when it is an illegal demonstration, the risks becomes critical. That is why peace-loving Malaysians understand that the street is not where one voices one’s grievances, unless we want our country to end up like Thailand, Egypt or other Middle Eastern countries where the people are now suffering in the

name of 'political correction'. I can foresee that if we continue being pawns to political parties, our country will be heading towards destruction. This is why we have elections, and why we elect our representatives to make our voices heard in Parliament. Unfortunately, those we elected seem incapable of doing their jobs. As a result, death, fatalities, injuries and loss of economic wealth continue to plague our country. Be careful of what you wish for. You might not like what you get. Anonymous

Up to MPs to speak up why all the hype? It makes me wonder and truly doubt if that was the main reason for this rally in the first place. Do not let yourselves become pawns in any political tug-ofwar. We have seen enough exam-

ples of how unrest can bring a whole country to its knees at the mercy of 'big forces'. Let us voice our views the the way we have always done, by voting for our chosen candidates. Dan

Take pride in our roots PEOPLE are naturally proud of their race, religion, language, culture and traditions but some sources of pride can be superficial. For example, those who accord great importance to their race may not be able to trace their roots. Race, as stated in our identity card, does not necessarily denote a person’s parentage. By definition, a Malay is a Muslim who speaks Malay and practises Malay customs. Howe ver, many are of mixed parentage and their parents are testimony that race was never an issue. It is more meaningful to trace ancestral lines and ponder over the trials and tribulations of past generations. When the descendants are respectful of their ancestors, they would plan their contributions for future generations. Unfortunately, our social progress has not kept pace with economic development where well-being of others is given lesser importance

then the pursuit of material possession. Emig rat ion and urb an migration may be a worldwide phenomena but cause many Malaysians to not take ownership of their community. When the neighbourhood deteriorates, many move to a better one instead of tackling the problem. There is little attachment with the community they live in and neighbours are strangers. Sadly, some hometowns and villages are forgotten. What we need is more people who are proud of their history and traditions, much like in many parts of Europe where there is strong connection to local history, culture, traditions, roots and family name. Culture should b e t he way of life and goes beyond merely performing cultural dances. The Citrawarna or the Colours of Malaysia festival may be impressive with thousands of dancers performing

in colourful traditional costumes but it is just a show for tourists held once a year and has no impact at other times. A fine example in Malaysia is the adat perpatih brought over from Minangkabau, Sumatra, and found in Negri Sembilan. Such rich cultures, among other virtues, promote courtesy, which is ver y much lacking in uprooted societies of today. For centuries, the royal houses in this peninsula have united people of various races, religions, languages, cultures and traditions. That is, until politicians clamouring for power succeeded in doing otherwise. We ought to connect to the past, taking in both the tragedies and the triumphs, of our families, our communities and ourselves. We should take pride of our roots and carry the torch passed by our ancestors to our descendants. YS Chan

WE have opposition Members of Parliament who have been elected by the people. It is up to them to voice the grouses expressed by Bersih. I have yet to see a street rally without any untoward incidents or injuries. Even deaths have been known to occur in rallies throughout the world. If the police or government in control do nothing during a rally, they are deemed stupid. But should they do something, such as exercise crowd-control, they are blamed. Humans never seem to learn.

If you do not like the present government, do not vote for them in the next general election. Whoever garners the majority of the votes, wins. It is that simple. No matter who rules a nation, there will always be some opposition. Nothing is perfect and no human is perfect. Humans are born to fight and hate and disagree on everything, it seems to me. It is sad when humans cannot live peacefully together, and I fear this may lead us to our doom. FedUp

The findings from a team at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are a counterpoint to a fiercely-debated study released last week that found no evidence that making small cuts in salt intake lowers the risk of heart disease and premature death. "Salt is still bad for you," said Dr. Thomas Farley, Health Commissioner for New York City, which is leading a campaign to reduce salt in restaurant and packaged foods by 25 per cent over five years. Most health experts agree with Farley that consuming too much salt is not good for you

and that cutting salt intake can reduce high blood pressure, which raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. Salt intake has been rising since the 1970s, with Americans consuming about twice the recommended daily limit. The CDC study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, specifically focused on growing research that shows a diet high in salt and low in potassium is especially risky. Farley, who wrote an editorial on the CDC study, said: "It is entirely consistent with what we've said all along about sodium intake." For the study, researchers looked at the longterm effects of sodium and potassium intake as part of a 15-year study of more than 12,000 people.

By the end of the study period, 2,270 of the study participants had died; 825 of these deaths were from heart disease and 433 were from blood clots and strokes. They found that people who had a high salt intake and a low potassium intake were most at risk. "People who ate a diet high in sodium and low in potassium had a 50 per cent increased risk of death from any cause, and about twice the risk of death, or a 200 per cent increase, from a heart attack," said Dr. Elena Kuklina of the CDC. She said consumers need to increase the levels of potassium in their diet by adding more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, grapes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and low fat milk and yogurt. — AFP

Spanish surgeons claim first double leg transplant SPANISH surgeons yesterday performed the world's first double-leg transplant on a man whose legs were amputated above the knee after an accident, officials said. Surgeons operated through the night on the man, who had faced life in a wheelchair because prosthetic limbs were unsuitable, said the health authority for the eastern region of Valencia. "It is the first time in the world that such a transplant has been carried out," it said in a statement after the surgery, carried out in the La Fe hospital in the city of Valencia. Neither donors nor the patient were identified but the health authority promised to give further details later, depending on his condition. The doctor in charge of the operation, Pedro Cavadas, said he would need at least 48 hours before being able to provide more information. Spain's health ministry authorised the transplant last November.

Royals victims of newspaper PRINCE Charles and Camilla may have been among the most high profile phone hacking victims, the police have warned Buckingham Palace, the Daily Mail reports. Palace officials were approached by officers recently and told the royal couple may have been targeted by Glenn Mulcaire. Their names, were among 4,000 in his dossier.

Irish staff to know fate in a few weeks STAFF at the Irish News of the World are facing an uncertain future, the Irish Independent reports. All 22 employees of the UK paper's Irish edition have been asked to be available over the next two weeks to be individually informed of the intentions of management. Staff will receive full pay for the next three months.

Cavadas is known in Spain for having made several groundbreaking organ transplants. In October 2008, he carried out the first double arm transplant in Spain and the second in the world, and in August 2009 he performed Spain's first face transplant. Spanish Health Minister Leire Pajin yesterday telephoned Cavadas to congratulate him on the "success" of the latest operation, Spanish media reported. The surgery "brings hope to other patients who have suffered amputations," the minister said. She also praised the "generosity" of the donor's family who had helped "make our country an example of solidarity in the world." The director of the National Transplant Organisation, Rafael Matesanz, confirmed the operation was a world first. "The indications for this kind of surgery are very rare; it is when the amputation is so high

that there is really no space to fit a prosthesis and the patient is condemned to remain in a wheelchair," Matesanz told Spanish public radio. When a patient is missing one leg or the amputation is below the knee, a prosthesis is the recommended treatment, he said. The Spanish transplant chief said the search for a donor was "very complicated" because the person had to fulfill a series of requirements including being of the right age and blood type, and not being too far from the operating hospital. Spain has become a world leader in organ donation since it set up a network of transplant coordinators in 1989 at all hospitals to closely monitor emergency wards and identify potential donors. When they learn of a death, they tactfully talk to the grieving families to get permission to use the organs to help save the lives of others. — AFP

Second Murdoch paper hacked British ex-PM BRITAIN'S former prime minister Gordon Brown (pic) may have had his phone hacked and bank account breached by The Sunday Times, another newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch's media empire, police said yesterday. The allegations broaden the scandal over widespread phone hacking by the News of the World, which was shut down at the weekend by News International, Murdoch's British newspaper publishing operation. Brown's spokesman said the family was "shocked" when police told them of the new claims. "Gordon Brown has now been informed of the scale of intrusion into his family's life," said the spokesman. "The family has been shocked by the level of criminality and the unethical means by which personal details have been obtained. The matter is in police hands," he added. Police told Brown that private investigator Glenn Mulcaire,

who was working for News International, hacked his phone and accessed his personal bank account when he was finance minister. The BBC and The Guardian newspaper also reported that The Sunday Times had targeted Brown when he was finance minister, obtaining private medical, financial and property details. The BBC said someone acting for The Sunday Times posed as Brown and obtained details of his accounts. — AFP

TRAGIC CRUISE: Emergencies Ministry workers fillling up stocks of water yesterday not far from village of Kamskoye Ustye, some 130 kms south of Kazan, Tatarstan's main city east of Moscow. They helped to search for the bodies of the passengers of the Bulgaria river cruise ship that sank on Sunday in a storm on Russia's Volga river. Some of the bodies recovered by divers had lifejackets, indicating the sinking was so swift they most likely did not have time to run up to the deck. — AFP

Death on the Volga

Tragic 'Bulgaria' carrying double its load and was in unsuitable condition RESCUERS recovered more than 50 bodies yesterday from an overcrowded pleasure boat that sank in the Volga River in an accident the Kremlin blamed on safety breaches. The emergencies ministry reported raising 55 bodies off the vessel, the Bulgaria, which went down in a heavy storm on Sunday on one of Russia's main rivers with 208 people on board, reportedly including at least 30 children. Only 79 people were rescued from the water after the sinking of the 56-year-old ship and hopes faded of finding any survivors yesterday after a search involving nearly a hundred divers, support vessels and helicopters. Divers continued to search the wreck yesterday afternoon, after making more

than 60 descents and finding the bodies of passengers including five children. Most of the bodies were found trapped inside the boat in a music room on its middle deck, the emergencies ministry said. President Dmitry Medvedev proclaimed today a day of national mourning and demanded a complete review of all Russian transport. "We have enough old tubs floating around," Medvedev sternly told a government meeting. "Based on the information we have today, the ship was in an unsuitable condition," Medvedev said in nationally televised remarks. "We can already say today that the accident would not have happened had the safety requirements been met,

despite the weather conditions." One of Medvedev's top ministers told the government meeting that the craft was filled well beyond capacity when it sailed in breach of basic regulations from the central Russian city of Kazan, about 800km east of Moscow. "All the witnesses on the boat have been questioned, we found there were 208 people on board," emergency situations minister Sergei Shoigu was quoted as telling Medvedev. Officials said the ship was not designed to carry more than 140 people. The ageing vessel had engine trouble even before setting out on the cruise and was seen to be listing to one side, investigators said.— AFP

THE phenomenon is dubbed "Manhattanhenge" and happens twice a year when the sun aligns at dusk with streets in a glowing magic trick as rays of sunlight span across New York perfectly, from west to east. "Manhattanhenge may just be a unique urban phenomenon in the world," says astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, of the American Museum of Natural History, who officially discovered the phenomenon. The name "Manhattanhenge" is a play on Manhattan, this city's most famous borough, and Stonehenge, the megalithic monument in southern England with large stone blocks set out in concentric circles. At Stonehenge, the sun crosses the site's central axis during the summer and winter solstices, leading experts to speculate that the site could have been used as

a sort of sun calendar and for religious ceremonies. But in Manhattan, the phenomenon takes place before and after the solstices when at dusk but before sunset, the sun neatly matches up with the even-numbered streets running west and east, sending out fingers of light. "As a kid I visited Stonehenge in the Salisbury Plain of England and did research on other stone monuments across the British Isles," DeGrasse Tyson said. "So I was, in a way, imprinted by the emotional power that terrestrial alignments with the sun can have on a culture or civilisation." And New York's phenomenon is more unusual than it may seem, he says. "Any city crossed by a rectangular grid can identify days where the setting sun aligns with

their streets. But a closer look at such cities around the world shows them to be less than ideal for this purpose," he stressed. D e G r a s s e Ty s on f i r s t started thinking about the "Manhattanhenge" effect back in 1996. It was not until five years later, in July 2001, that he took a photo of the sun-meetsskyscrapers display. It and others were published in 2002 in a special edition of Natural History Magazine called "City of Stars," he said. And the effect to became better known. This year, the effect took place on May 30, before the June 21 solstice, and now it will be seen again tomorrow, though it can be seen partially one day earlier. In wintertime, the phenomenon is seen around Dec 5 and Jan 8. But weather conditions tend not to be ideal. — AFP

Jack in the box

NOTHING moves a club more than being able to parade one of their own. Jack Wilshere epitomises that. He is a product of the Arsenal academy, a roughcut diamond when he joined them but now a sterling player who has found a permanent place not only with the Gunners but for his country as well. And that this 19year achieved in the past 12 months when he broke into the senior ranks. Arsenal were quick to ensure that he remained with them, by offering a further £10,000 to his present £40,000 a week deal he signed last November. Jack started the 2010/11 campaign as a highlyrated youngster hoping for a chance in the Arsenal first team. He ended it as a full-fledged international, the bedrock of Arsene Wenger’s midfield, the Club’s Player of the Season and the PFA Young-Playerof-the-Year. The term ‘meteoric rise’ is reserved for those who come from nowhere to imprint themselves on the public’s consciousness and Jack did exactly that — even surprising himself

with the progress he made in such a short time. Jack joined the club when he was just 10. He developed into a natural that he had the passing, vision and off the ball movement which are integral parts of our style of football. He made his international debut in August and emerged as the poster boy for a new generation of English talent in the wake of a poor showing at the 2010 World Cup. Later that month the absence of Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song gave Jack the chance to start his first Premier League game for Arsenal — at Anfield on the opening day of the season. That went well enough and the teenager simply went from strength to strength. He might have expected 20 to 25 appearances given Wenger’s battery of midfield talent but Jack’s quality and consistency made him undroppable. He wound up starting more firstteam games than any other Arsenal player last term — not bad for a lad who was still learning his trade. Wenger’s decision to deploy Jack in a deeper midfield role helped him

acclimatise to the pace of the Premier League and before long he was dictating the tempo of Arsenal’s forward play with his range of passing and ability to drift past opponents. Jack only scored twice — against Shakhtar and Aston Villa — but you sense that the goals will flow in time. Jack’s tenacity and loyalty — as well as his quality — made him an instant hit with the Arsenal fans and they crowned him their Player of the Season in May with 41.4 per cent of the votes cast in the club’s official poll. The teenager has already achieved so much — but this is surely only the start of a long, illustrious career. Jack ended up on the losing side over two legs against Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals but no one impressed the Catalan giants more. He went toe-to-toe with Xavi and Andres Iniesta for 180 minutes, inspiring his team to a memorable first-leg win at the Emirates before putting in a huge shift in the Nou Camp. Europe sat up and took notice. — Arsenal.com

Genius of Wenger

KUALA LUMPUR

Stunning achievements of the Professor and his young 'uns Article reproduced courtesy of ARSENAL Malaysia, www.arsenalmy.com

NOT to take the shine away from another successful manager in England, but the main reason that Wenger edged that other fellow was he brought about a structural change to the way a football club is run. Not to mention, he won the league title in his first full season, something that took seven years to achieve by his main rival. For all intents and purpose, Wenger brought about a tsunami of change to Arsenal from the moment he first walked onto the hallowed grounds of Highbury. Most important of all, the classy Frenchman is the best thing to happen to English football since Herbert Chapman, another great manager at Highbury back in the 1930s. Since his entry, the English Premier League (EPL) became more of a competition, as no other club could really measure up to Manchester United’s might in the mid-to-late 1990s on a consistent level. Leeds United were on the decline after their 1992 success, Blackburn Rovers were just one-season wonders, while Newcastle United had some hope for more than just a season or two but just could not overcome some psychological barriers to achieving greatness. Then came Wenger in October 1996 and suddenly there was something different in the air, a freshness to the style of play besides a new fitness and health regime at Highbury that transformed and extended the careers of many senior players at Arsenal. Within seven months the Gunners were on the brink of Champions League (CL) qualification, but ended up third, just a point behind Newcastle. Back then, only the top two sides in the EPL qualified for the CL. But just 12 months later, in May 1998, Arsenal had overcome an 11-point lead by MU to win their second Championship of the decade, having won the previous First Division title in 1991. Not only that, the Gunners also won the rare League Championship and FA Cup double. All this, in his first full season as manager of Arsenal. What more could a true supporter ask for. Wenger then started work on the second part of his revolution in English football. Now, many managers come and go in the top flight in England. That has always been the

case. It is not a new phenomenon. The difference between all of them and Wenger is that Wenger truly had a plan, a long-term plan, and he set about getting it all on board with the club’s directors and staff to make sure that Arsenal are a successful club for many years to come, not just shortterm glories. Any championship or cup won were just the bonus. The foundation for that success included the new stadium with an increased capacity (almost double that of Highbury), a scouting network and advanced training facilities that no club in England, let alone

Europe, can match. In less than 10 years, Wenger achieved all of this and has increased the value of Arsenal far beyond what trophies can bring in the short term. With arguably the best set of young players in the land, we know we speak for the majority of Arsenal supporters out there who are more than satisfied with what the gaffer has done. The present and the future both look bright for the Gunners thanks to Wenger’s persistence and efforts from that fateful day he became manager of a club he almost shares a first name with. We dare supporters of other clubs to a debate on whether

their club have a better formula that has worked consistently well from the start of a manager’s reign till today, and with good future prospects, both financially as well as on the pitch. To bring it all into perspective, let us refer you to this gem of a quote from the genius himself, as reported on Arsenal.com a few years back: "When people say 'you have no trophy for four years', I say ‘yes, you are right’

but in these four years we were in the final of the Champions League and the semi-final of the Champions League too. Had we won the Carling Cup, people would not say that. "For example, you go out in the first round of the Champions League and you win the Carling Cup, you have one trophy. But for me it’s worse." These days, football supporters expect their team to win trophies every season. Worse

still, the instant-gratification demanding fans of today expect heads to roll if their team does not cut it. We have to take the ups and the downs, the good times and the lean years. That is what supporting any club is all about — loyalty, positive-thinking and having hope. Between 1968 (winning the European Cup) and 1993 (EPL), MU won four FA Cups (1977, 1983, 1985, 1990), one League Cup (1992) and a CupWinners' Cup (1991). They were even relegated for a season in the mid-70s. Compare that with what they have won since 1993. Likewise, compare Liverpool’s tally of success in the ‘70s and ‘80s with the lean years since 1991. These are perfect examples of the ups and downs in the fortunes of professional football clubs.

Reach for the stars Malaysians have good reason to play well

IF Malaysian players are looking to be motivated when they play English Premier League giants, Arsenal, tomorrow, here it is. Manager Arsene Wenger will be looking out for players he can take back with him to Arsenal. So, here’s an opportunity knocking on the door of Malaysian players. “More and more Asian players are coming out to Europe and are very successful. I’m sure given the large base in Malaysia, and especially in China, there are players who can impress,” said Wenger yesterday. “I want to have a look at the level of the game in the countries we’ll be visiting. I wish Arsenal are also travelling to Japan and maybe Thailand. I want to look at players.” The most famous Asian player in Europe is probably Park Ji-sung who has been with Manchester United since the 2004/05 season. There are an estimated 30 Asians in the top leagues in Eruope and several more with less prominent clubs. Sadly, not a single Malaysian has been able to gain that recognition though there had been jaded attempts by the likes of Titus Palani and Akmal Rizal Rakhli. Wenger, 62, assured that Arsenal will play the best team possible in Kuala Lumpur and China, as a show of gratitude to their loyal fans in region. “We need to have friendly contact with fans. We are people from different environments and we need to experience and appreciate each other. These tours are also to further develop our fan base in these countries. “The EPL is a world brand. We have resisted for a long time about coming out to this region to play. But we are glad to come. I know the organisation and hospitality will be great. I’ve been to Malaysia before and people are always trying to make you as comfortable and as welcome as possible,” added Wenger. One person who is looking forward to catch up with Wenger again is Malaysia’s No 1 Arsenal fan, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. “I’ve met him about three times...but just brief ‘hello’. He always looks fierce but focussed. This will be a good

time to know Wenger better,” said Tengku Abdullah. Wenger became the first non-British manager to win the double in English football in 1998 with Arsenal and reproduced that form in 2002. Arsenal were stunning in 2004 when they went through the entire season undefeated, a run which ended at 49 games. Wenger’s tenure also brought Arsenal a first appearance in a Champions League final in 2006 in Paris, where they were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona.

Amirul's day in 7th heaven

AMIRUL H HADI ZAINAL: NATIONAL PLAYER/ ARSENAL FAN

By HARESH DEOL hareshdeol@mmail.com.my

AMIRUL HADI ZAINAL (above) grew up idolising the likes of Arsenal stars Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars. Never in his wildest dream had he imagined he would face his favourite English Premier League team. The national player will now be able to realise his dream as the Malaysian Selection take on Arsenal tomorrow at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. “This is like a dream come true. I’ve never expected this day would come true, really,” said a jubilant Amirul. This is his second experience playing against an English team. He raised eyebrows with his promising efforts when the nation hosted Chelsea at the Shah Alam Stadium in 2008. Born on May 27, 1986 in Malacca, Amirul was raised in Selangor and started his football career through the Selangor FA academy. He then represented the State’s President’s Cup team in 2004 before graduating to the senior team two years later. Football runs through his veins as his father Zainal Nordin played for Selangor in the 90s.

RAJAGOBAL: Arsenal game will make us stronger

Amirul admitted he does not idolise any particular Arsenal player from the current squad but is a fan of the team. “It’s going to be my proudest moment. Not only I will be playing for my beloved country but I will be up against my favourite team in the whole world. “Sentiments aside, my focus will be to aid our team. We want to show the world what we are capable of.” When asked what he would say if he had a moment with Arsenal team manager Arsene Wenger, Amirul paused for awhile before saying: “I would tell him (Wenger) to take notice of Malaysian players.” Amirul played an instrumental role in aiding Selangor to finish third in the just con-

cluded Super League. With the national team, Amirul last saw action in the World Cup qualifier against Taiwan. Malaysia advanced to the next round thanks to the away goal rule despite the 4-4 aggregate against the Taiwanese side. The Tigers face Singapore in the second round and the match against Arsenal will be a good avenue for national coach K. Rajagobal to further test his lads. Nevertheless, Amirul is bullish about the Malaysian side putting up a challenge against the visitors. “People may say we looked sluggish in our last (preWorld Cup) match against Taiwan (in Taipei) but we know our capabilities and we plan to show against Arsenal,” he added.

Sagna: I love it here

KUALA LUMPUR

Rightback likes sunny Malaysian weather By HARESH DEOL hareshdeol@mmail.com.my

IT IS his first visit to Malaysia but Bacary Sagna is determined it won't be his last. The Frenchman is enjoying the sun and sights of the Malaysian capital despite having arrived only hours earlier. “It’s great…everything is nice. I like the weather,” said Sagna. “This is the first time I’ve been on a really long trip across the globe. But it’s a good trip and I’m hoping for an even better game on Wednesday.” Born on Feb 14, 1983, Sagna started his career with FC Sens but it was in 2007 that he made a move to Arsenal. TWIN ATTRACTION: Van Persie (left) and Sagna arrived with the rest of the Arsenal squad yesterday afternoon — Pic: RAZAK GHAZALI

Van Persie will miss captain Fab ARSENAL player Robin Van Persie admitted life would be tough without Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas is rumoured to return to his former club Barcelona but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident the Spaniard will stay for another season. “It will be hard. We have a good connection together on the field,” said van Persie. “He knows exactly when to make decisions. I remember our away game in Blackpool where he created magic with his touches. That’s Fabregas,” the Dutchman added. Van Persie, however, did not want to dwell further over his teammate’s future with the Gunners. “Fabregas is a special play-

er. He can see better than other players and personally, I really hope he stays.” Another player, Samir Nasir, is also linked to a move to Manchester City. Van Persie was met when the Arsenal team arrived in Malaysia yesterday afternoon for their match against the Malaysian Selection at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow (kickoff: 8.45pm). The international hitman started his career with Dutch club Feyenoord before joining Arsenal in 2004. He scored his career best of 18 goals last season and plans to better it in the new season. Meanwhile, van Persie added that huge money spent on new players should be jus-

tified with quality football. “Good players cost money. Personally, the main thing is not just the label (price tag) but the quality of the players." That aside, Van Persie is hoping for at least a silverware in the coming EPL season. “I would like us to win something. It doesn’t really matter which title but it’s about time we won something. We’ve suffered several disappointments already. “I give my full concentration and keep it going. I can’t speak for the other players but we need to work more as a team. If we focus on our goals as a team, I’m sure we can achieve our ambitions,” he added.

However, a year later Sagna suffered a huge loss when his 28-year-old brother, Omar, passed away — a day before Sagna turned 25. Nevertheless, Sagna put on a brave front and played for the Gunners in the second leg Round 4 Champions League match against AC Milan a week later. Arsenal won 2-0. “It was a difficult time for me. I don’t want to speak about his death but I learned how to be focused on the field. I just concentrated on the game and I’m glad it worked out well. “Now I have a family and two kids. Losing a brother that early was not easy but

this is part of life and I want to move forward.” When asked if he felt threatened that his place in the squad could be taken by Carl Kenkinson, the rightback Sagna added he was aware of the possibility. “Anything is possible in football. For now my boss (Arsene Wegner) believes I’m good but I need to prove myself. If there are better players, of course I will be taken out. It’s normal.” So will Sagna consider KL as a destination for his vacation? “Yes, why not,” he replied with a smile.

ARSENAL FUTBOL CLUB, usually referred to Arsenal de Sarandi, are a football club from the Sarandi neighbourhood in the city of Avellaneda, Argentina, which was founded in January 1957 by the Grondona brothers Hector and Julio Humberto Grondona (pic), inspired by the English club Arsenal. Arsenal play in the top tier of Argentine football, the Primera Division Argentina. They play their home games at the Estadio Julio H. Grondona,

named after one of the founders, which has a capacity of 16,000. It opened in 1964 but was not used in the First Division until 2004. The club's colours are red and light blue, in honour of the traditional teams of Avellaneda (Club Atletico Independiente and Racing Club). They have never won an Argentine league championship. The club's first major title was the Copa Sudamericana 2007.

THIS would be another instance when the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah shares his father's unbridled passion for sports — be it polo, football and hockey. The 53-year-old Tengku Mahkota Pahang was, during his heydays, a worldclass polo player, the deputy-president of the FA of Malaysia and since recently, the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president. So, when Tengku Abdullah declared he was a diehard Arsenal fan, there was little surprise because Sultan Ahmad Shah is also a great admirer and supporter of the Gunners. "I recall it was my father who really triggered my support for Arsenal. Whenever I was in England during school holidays, Tuanku Sultan would take me to all the Arsenal matches at Highbury," said Tengku Abdullah.

"It started as a day out to a football match with my father, but eventually I became a huge supporter as well. I suppose you can say Tuanku Sultan was the single biggest influence in me being a Gunner." Tengku recalled his Gunners experience started sometime during the 1976 season. He remembers vividly the performances of players like Liam Brady (197380), Malcolm MacDonald (1976-79) and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pat Jennings (1977-85). Tengku Abdullah couldn't pick the most memorable match that he had watched of Arsenal, pointing out that at times he was mesmerised by the electrifying atmosphere at Highbury and watching his heroes. "It was not just the matches alone. We had to park our car some distance away and walk, I think maybe for about two-three kilometres to get to Highbury.

I would be in a sea of red/ white shirts flowing towards Highbury. That itself alone was always very thrilling," recalled Tengku Abdullah, whose social status in Malaysia entitles him to police outriders who would escort him right to the main door of his intended destination. "I've been to so many Arsenal matches that I've now even lost count. Even now, if I'm in London and Arsenal are due to play at Emirates Stadium, I'll try to make to the match. "This is why it is such a thrill for me that Arsenal are coming to Malaysia. I'm really looking forward to meeting with (Arsene) Wenger, and the players." Tengku Abdullah had dinner with the team last night. Arsenal play Malaysia Selection at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow. Gunning through the years

THE origins of Arsenal’s kit tell a great and unusual story. In 1886, before the club became professional, a small group of Nottingham Forest players, Fred Beardsley, Bill Parr and Charlie Bates, joined Dial Square FC, (the club’s first name) and brought their old red kit along with them. Working to a tight budget, the club decided the most inexpensive way of acquiring a strip was to kit out the team in the same colour as the ex-Forest players. This original kit comprised a dark red shirt with long sleeves, a collar and three buttons down the front. The shirt was worn with white knee length shorts and heavy woollen socks with blue and white hoops. The goalkeeper wore the same attire apart from the shirt, which was a hand knitted cream woollen polo neck jumper. It was this dark red kit that the team wore during their first season at Highbury in 1913/14. Beardsley, Parr and Bates’ generosity in providing shirts and inspiring the club to play in red encouraged several other teams to follow Arsenal’s lead. One of the most famous examples is Sparta Prague whose president, Dr Petric, visited London in 1906. He returned home to Czechoslovakia after having watched Woolwich Arsenal and was so inspired by the kit that he demanded his team play in the same colours. Today, Sparta Prague continue to play in the same dark red kit, not dissimilar to Arsenal’s 2005/06 redcurrant. It was the arrival of manager Herbert Chapman, the ‘Great Innovator’, in 1925 that launched the Arsenal kit as we know it today. Depending on which source you believe, Chapman either noticed someone at the ground wearing a red sleeveless sweater over a white shirt or played golf with famous cartoonist of the day Tom Webster, who wore something similar. Either way, the ‘look’ inspired the manager to create a new strip combining a red shirt with white collar and sleeves. It also incorporated the club badge, which was positioned on the lefthand side of the shirt. In the 1950s, a second kit was developed to combat any clash of colours with opposing home teams wearing similar kits. And, in around 1960, the club moved away from the woven rugby shirt style to a new knitted cotton jersey. The club’s famous cannon graphic appeared on the shirt for the first time in 1967. It was with this shirt that Arsenal won their first famous ‘double’, both the League Championship and the FA Cup in the 1970/71 season. In the late 1970s, the shirt featured a kit manufacturer’s logo for the first time, in this case ‘Umbro’. And in 1981 ‘JVC’ became the club’s first shirt sponsor, eventually making way for ‘Dreamcast’ in 2000. Two years later and ‘O2’ replaced the games company before ‘Fly Emirates’ took up the sponsorship in 2006. A deal which will last for eight years. In the 2005/06 season,

to commemorate the club’s final campaign at Highbury, the home of Arsenal since 1913, the Gunners wore a special ‘redcurrant’ shirt. Designed to honour the colour of the club’s set of shirts for the first season at Highbury, they were adorned with gold lettering and accompanied by white shorts and redcurrant socks. For season 2006/07, the first at Emirates Stadium, a welcome return to the famous red and white was made — although the redcurrant remains to some extent in subsequent strips. In 2007/08 the club launched a white-shirted away kit with redcurrant shorts, designed to pay tribute to the influence of Herbert Chapman on the Club, alongside a redcurrant and navy third kit which was believed to be Arsenal’s firstever striped effort. The Chapmaninspired kit sparked reminders that he first introduced white sleeves to the Gunners’ shirts, and also pioneered the design of hooped socks — which he believed would help players recognise one another more easily. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of winning the title at Anfield, the yellow and blue away kit was modelled on that which was worn on that famous night on May 26, 1989. For 2009/10, the away kit features a ‘midnight blue’ design, including a polo collar inspired by those worn by the all-conquering side of the 1930s. In common with the current home kit, it bears the club’s motto, ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit’, inside its neck. The 125th anniversary home shirts for the 2011/12 season capture the spirit and history of Arsenal Football Club, the new home shirt features a bespoke crest to highlight the proud origins of the club 125 years ago. Founded in Woolwich in 1886 and called The Royal Arsenal, the celebratory design features 15 laurel leaves to the left side of the club's crest to reflect the detail on the reverse of the six pence pieces paid by 15 men to establish the club — the laurel leaves also represent strength. The 15 oak leaves to the right of the crest acknowledge the founders who would meet in the local Royal Oak pub. Underneath the crest is one of the first recorded mottos related to the armament and battle — 'Forward' — with the anniversary dates of 1886 and 2011 either side of the heart of the shirt. The classic design is inspired by the 1970's strips and boasts a clean, refined look with a block red body and white sleeves with red speed stripe detail. The shorts are white with a red speed stripe. On the back of the shirt below the neck reads ‘Arsenal', while inside the front, on the back of the crest, reads ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit', (‘Victor y Through Harmony'), Arsenal's Latin motto, which was previously featured on earlier versions of their club crest between 1949 and 2002.

FOR the first 80 years of the Club's existence Arsenal shirts were without a Club emblem, except for special matches such as FA Cup Finals. Arsenal's first six FA Cup Finals in 1927, 1930, 1932, 1936, 1950 and 1952 saw a Club badge used on the Arsenal shirt for each of these highprofile one-off occasions. The 1967/68 season saw a white cannon added to the famous red shirt for the first

time on a regular basis. This remained virtually unchanged for 22 years except for the addition of the A-F-C 'cannonballs' in 1978. The full 'Victoria Concordia Crescit' crest was introduced to the shirts at the start of the 1990-91 title winning season and underwent several cosmetic changes over the next 11 years before finally being replaced with the current crest in 2002.

Almost like Henry Walcott, youngest Arsenal player to appear in a European competition in 2006

THEO WALCOTT

Full Name: Theo James Walcott Position: Striker Squad Number: 14 Age: 22 Date of Birth: 16-3-1989 Birth Place: Stanmore, England Joined Arsenal: 20-1-2006 Height: 5ft 9in (1.75m) Weight: 68kg THE-O ONLY ONE: Walcott (left) in action against Ashley Young of Aston Villa (now Manchester United) at the Emirates — GETTYpic

THEO JAMES WALCOTT was the subject of worldwide media attention when he was a shock inclusion in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s final 23-man England squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but he ended up without playing a match during the tournament. Born in Stanmore, North London on 16 March 1989, Walcott grew up at Compton, near Newbury, Berkshire. He scored more than 100 goals in his one and only season for

Newbury before leaving there for Swindon Town in 2000. He spent only six months with Swindon Town before leaving for Southampton (2005-2006) after he rejected a chance to join Chelsea. Nike agreed to a sponsorship deal with Walcott when he was only 14-years-old. Walcott transferred to Arsenal on 20 January 2006 for a fee of £5 million. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has likened the current England striker to

Walcott’s former teammate and captain Thierry Henry. FIFA World Player-of-theYear winner Lionel Messi describes Walcott as “one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against.” Walcott first donned England colours with the Under-16 team (2004-2005) and made four appearances. From 2005 to 2006 he was in the England Under-17 team with 14 appearances and played once for the Under-19 team (2006) before

moving up to the Under-21 team (2006-2010), scoring six goals in his 20 appearances. He made his Under-21 debut with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Moldova and in the process became the youngster player ever to score for the team. Walcott made his UEFA Champions League debut against Dinamo Zagreb in 2006 where he became the youngest ever Arsenal player to appear in European competition, a

record previously held by Cesc Fabregas, and since beaten by Jack Wilshere. To-date, the talented winger/ forward has scored three goals for the England senior team and has been capped 17 caps. Walcott was born to a British Jamaican father and an English mother. His family made a cameo appearance in the 2007 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. However, Walcott did not make an appearance due to his commitments

to Arsenal. Walcott, who has done 100metres in 10.30s, was a torch bearer for the Olympic Flame for Beijing 2008 as it was paraded around London. He is in a long-term relationship with Melanie Slade. The couple got together after meeting in 2004 at a shopping centre in Southampton. His cousin Jacob Walcott is a trainee at Reading and a member of the England national Under-17 football team.

An answer to their prayers

KUALA LUMPUR

Gunners fans in for a rare treat

Committee 2010/2011

PRESIDENT: Sukumar Krishnan VICE PRESIDENT: Captain Fairuz TREASURER: Jefree Johari SECRETARY: Atiqah Abdul Hamid

THE trip by Arsenal FC to Malaysia is such a longawaited dream come true for tens of thousands of Malaysian Gooners (as Arsenal supporters are referred to). Their last visit to Malaysia was in May 1999, just one week after the English Premier League (EPL) season ended that year. Back then, as the league runners-up and the previous season’s champions, Arsenal had greatly multiplied their fan base in Malaysia in a short span of two years. This was mainly due to the beautiful attacking football that the Gunners showcased under the then new manager Arsene Wenger. But also it was because many neutral English football supporters in Malaysia longed to get behind a team other than Manchester United and Liverpool. Whatever the reason, the support has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 12 years thanks to legendary players who contributed to two more Premiership titles, three FA Cups, a league-Cup double, an invincible season, a Champions League final, two Carling Cup finals and just being consistently among the top four teams in the EPL every season. Arsenal were actually due to make a trip to Thailand and Malaysia during the

mid-season break in 2003, but sadly that Tour of the Far East was cancelled due to the SARS outbreak, especially across Asia since the early part of that year. So, this trip has also managed to finally calm that deeply frustrating feeling from eight years ago. Though the club has not added to its trophy chest since 2005, the mere pres-

ence of the Gunners in Bukit Jalil this week will be the highlight for many

young supporters, mostly in their teens, who started supporting the club from

the moment they took an interest in football thanks to the weekly live telecasts

of Arsenal matches on ESPN/StarSports. The intensity of the match against the Malaysian Selection tomorrow will be nothing compared with the level of play in England and Europe, but as they say, the talent and class of the team are permanent. It will certainly be on show from the young and talented squad Arsenal are bringing to Malaysia. — Courtesy of Arsenal Malaysia

THE ARSENAL FC Supporters Club Malaysia (AFCSM), was first launched in 2000, but had a successful relaunch as a registered society since early last year. The club’s inaugural annual general meeting was held at the Kelab Golf Negara Subang on May 1, 2010. The AFCSM is now of-

ficially recognised by the Arsenal Football Club in London, England as Arsenal Malaysia. Among the club’s regular activities are futsal and football matches with various teams as well as the weekly and mid-week Arsenal match live telecast viewing at the Eckywoobee

Sports Cafe in TTDI Plaza, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. This year there were two significant events organised by Arsenal Malaysia. The first was the Carling Cup Final gathering in February. It was held at the Kelab Shah Alam and drew more than 200 members and

non-member Arsenal fans. Then on Sunday March 27, the inaugural Arsenal Malaysia Cup futsal tournament (for members only) was held at the Samba de Futsal in Petaling Jaya. Arsenal Malaysia hopes to chart a course for the benefit of all Arsenal supporters in Malaysia.

Plans for the upcoming season include a trip to the Emirates to watch Arsenal live in action. Details will be announced in coming months on Arsenal Malaysia’s website, www.arsenalmy.com. Arsenal fans can also reach the club on Facebook (www.facebook.com/

AFCSM) and via email, arsenal.my@gmail.com. The Arsenal Malaysia world online is also present in the form of an online forum at spor ts.groups.yahoo.com/ group/arsenal-my/. For more information, contact Arsenal Malaysia president Sukumar Krishnan at 012-393 5026.

Tasty Terengganu dishes

By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my DINING at Restraurant Mek T in Puchong is a delicious and enlightening experience, all rolled into one. Featuring the authentic flavours of Terengganu, the little — known restaurant situated in a bustling business centre, is one of Klang Valley’s best kept

secrets... until now. Like many KL-ites who have yet to sample Tereng-ganu’s bona fide dishes, this reviewer had no idea what to expect before walking into Mek T. For those wondering what Mek T means, it is derived from the local slang of Mek (meaning Miss) and T stands for the State in the spotlight, Terengganu. The family-run restaurant offers foodies a chance to experience and appreciate traditional cuisine, straight from

Craving for chicken?

DOMINO’S Pizza continues to entice food lovers with the latest introduction of two irresistible new side orders — Crazy Chicken Crunchies Original Flavour and Roasted Chicken Drummets. A fresh twist of the popular side order, Crazy Chicken Crunchies Original Flavour is made with 100 per cent boneless, skinless, tender cuts of succulent chicken breast marinated with sour cream and mixed spices then breaded before being baked to perfection. Crazy Chicken Crunchies Original Flavour can be enjoyed equally on its own or dipped in the salsa sauce that accompanies each serving. Equally as delicious is the Roasted Chicken Drummets (six pieces). Each juicy chicken drummet is marinated in dried oregano, black pepper and garlic and then roasted to golden. Ba U Shan-Ting, Chief Operating Officer of Domino’s Pizza Malaysia and Singapore, said: “Our two new chicken side orders are sure to appeal to all, with savoury flavours that Malaysians appreciate. Domino’s is committed to bringing new and exciting dishes for

our customers to enjoy and we will continue offering our customers the best value-formoney meals.” Domino’s Chicks on the Side Meal Combo is priced at RM55 each. The Meal comes with two regular pizzas, one Chocolate Lava Cake, one twisty bread and a choice of Crazy Chicken Crunchies Original Flavour with salsa dipping sauce or Roasted Chicken Drummet (six pieces). The Chicks on the Side Meal Combo offers savings of RM20 in total. Domino’s Crazy Chicken Crunchies Original Flavour and Roasted Chicken Drummets are priced at RM12.80 ala carte. the kampung in the beautiful State to busy Puchong. The red-themed restaurant has a fast food-style ambience, not surprising as Mek T is supposed to be a fast-food, authentic spot. However, don’t be fooled by the fast food concept, the dishes served here are homemade right to the last morsel. For those who have not tried Terengganu cuisine, Mek T is the perfect place to change that fact. Those with bigger appetites should try their signature Nasi Sedap Sokmo. Consisting of fragrant basmati rice served with delicious chicken and egg curry with a side of special tangy pineapple sambal, this dish gives new meaning to satisfying. If you are looking for something a little less filling, there is the well-known Nasi Dagang. Mek T’s version however, is likely to be different from any other restaurant-prepared version you have tried. A mix of glutinous rice with coconut milk served with curry tuna

and vegetable pickle ((gulai ikan aiya and acar timun in Malay), this dish shed some new light on the flavours of tuna, for this reviewer. Traditional foodies are likely to go for the Nasi Ulam and would have no regrets doing so. The dish is a mix of rice tainted with blue and bunga telang combined with flakes of grilled fish, fried chicken, local herbs and two types of sambal and rich, thick gravy — this reviewer’s favourite big meal. Laksa lovers, be prepared to be surprised with handmade noodles served with fresh herbs and ulam with a spiced gravy of pureed fish — a rather unique taste in a paper bowl. Broaden your laksa horizons a tad with Mek T’s Laksam, a thick cut noodle made out of wheat and rice floor that is served with a rich gravy of pureed fish, light coconut milk, herbs and ulam — definitely a taste that you will remember. While one would be tempted to try out the main meals,

AT YOUR SERVICE: The red-themed restaurant has a fast foodstyle ambience

there are certainly choices for those looking for something light. There’s the low-carb high-protein snack Rojak Betik — shredded raw papaya, pineapples and cucumber combined with the sweet tangy fish puree gravy. Best eaten in true Terengganu style using crispy keropok to scoop by the rojak, it is an experience by itself. Mek T also offers a variety of desserts, including traditional delights Puteri Mandi, Pulut Lepa and Lompat Tikam as well

as cendol and four different types of bubur (porridge). It is obvious from the quality of the array of dishes at Mek T, that the restaurant owners have taken the effort to provide a traditional Terengganu experience like no other. Mek T’s traditional delights are all reasonably priced, starting from RM4.50 onwards. RESTORAN Mek T is located at 127, Jalan Kenari 23A, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Puchong.

Azura Zainal along with her family members. Served with ample amounts of chicken, mashed potatoes, fish bites, and all the other good stuff perpetuated by the Bona Fide Sale, Azura and family helped themselves to the varied offerings. One could say it was a finger licking good time, but then again, another may say it’s misplaced marketing. Turns out that Azura’s favourite dish was the mash potatoes, thanks to the copious amount of sauce that was dumped in the delicious mash, plus the tinge of spiciness that makes for a greater savour. Her dad, on the other hand, found Popeye’s famous chicken a fitting stomach filler along with the flavoursome fries. Suffice to say, the family had a good time. And your family just may find Popeye’s a great place for some good, fulfilling fast food at affordable prices. Just head on over and enjoy the offer while it lasts. Expressing her expectations of this year’s participation, Lee said: “Last year, we received a total of 19,450 entries — the highest we have had so far; and we hope to exceed the 20,000 mark this year!” The panel of judges will not only look for bright, healthy and cute looking babies, but a child that possesses the smile, wink or the X factor to be crowned the ‘prince’ or ‘princess’. To participate in this contest, the first step is to snap a couple of pictures of baby, specifically one full-body shot and another close-up of baby’s face. Printed pictures can either be in 3R or 4R size. Then, purchase any JOHNSON’S baby products and keep the receipt as proof of purchase and submit them together with the entry. Submission can be done via three easy ways - post, online or at any of the in-store photography counters. Parents can take these pictures on their own or drop by at any of the JOHNSON’S baby in-store photography counter to have them taken by professionals with submission on the spot. Simply bring your little princess or prince to the 60 photographic

counters at leading hypermarkets, supermarkets and retail outlets throughout Malaysia in the month of July to have their pictures taken for free. If you want to submit your entry via post, complete the contest form and attach baby’s pictures and proof of purchase to mail. Alternatively, you can do the same online by uploading the pictures and proof of purchase at www.babycenter.com. my/johnsonsbaby/boty2011. Early bird submission will stand a chance to win a trip

to Hong Kong Disneyland for four! This exclusive prize is only applicable to submission online at www.facebook.com/iLoveJohnsonsbaby.com, within the period of July 1 to 21. The highest voted ‘prince’ or ‘princess’ will win the Disney trip! Closing date for entries is Aug 31. The prince or princess who wins the most hearts this year will also go home with RM15,000 cash prize, a chance to appear on the covers of parenting magazines, and a JOHNSON’S baby hamper worth RM1,000.

Postcards for keeps By SITI NURSURAYA ALI suraya@mmail.com.my TITTLE: Selangor : 300 Early Postcards AUTHOR: Cheah Jin Seng PUBLISHER: Jugra Publications Kuala Lumpur

SUDOKU

RATINGS: 3/10 SELANGOR: 300 Early Postcards presents a wide range of views from the early 1900s to the cession of Kuala Lumpur to the Federal Government

SUDOKU

in 1974. Flipping through the postcards, one can see physical changes that the State, mainly Kuala Lumpur, has gone over the years. As postcards and stamps play an important role in capturing or recording our country's history, the author puts collectogether a collec tion that describe Selangor the best and shares with readers her journey during corresponding eras. As an added bonus, some of the postcards featured also have stamps on them and that alone would bring us back to when they were written and sent. Each postcard has its own story and the only way to understand the whole collection is to go through every single one of the postcards. Definitely a book for the coffee table.

Influence made easy TITLE: Instant Influence: How to Get Anyone to Do Anything — Fast AUTHOR: Michael V. Pantalon PUBLISHER: Little Brown and Company RATINGS: 7/10 ACCORDING to the author, it takes less than seven minutes to influence someone to change their attitude. While this may be difficult to believe, Yale researcher and psychologist Dr Pantalon does have some interesting points to

present in his book. Having spent much of his time investigating ways to move people from feeling resistant to being motivated, his reflections of the human behaviour is accurate and realistic, transcending any culture or nationality. He describes the six steps

that will allow you to achieve instant influence — asking questions like why might you change?; how ready are you to change (from a scale of 1 to 10) ; why did you pick a lower number?; imagine the change; why those outcomes are important to you and what is the next step. This book is an interesting read, not just for managers looking to motivate staff in the workplace, but also for colleagues, friends, loved ones and even strangers. While it may not be 100 per cent proven, Pantalon’s techniques are certainly worth a read and an experiment with. — By ANU VENUGOPAL

Remixed and fun TITLE: Malaysian Tales Retold and Remixed EDITED BY: Daphne Lee PUBLISHER: ZI Publications RATING: 8/10 MALAYSIAN fables and fairytales have never been this hip and cool. Handed down from generation to generation, these myths and legends are part of our heritage. The authors of this collection have stretched their imaginations far and wide to come up with bite size stories, which include Si Tanggang, Mahsuri and Sang Kancil in mind. Authors like Amir Muhammad, Daphne Lee, M. Shan-

mughalingam, Rehman Rashid and Kee Thuan Chye cleverly spin tales steeped in mythology and magic as well as metaphysics. Many of the tales have the ability to pull strings in the heart — including Samarasan’s modern day version of Mahsuri and the unconventional sisters in Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih, redesigned by Fazlyn Abdul Malek. Malaysian Tales Retold and Remixed is a collection of fairy tales and myths that evoke a walk down folklore lane for many adults. The breezy and interesting stories

are a page turner and one can’t help but look forward to the next story after one is finished. — By ANU VENUGOPAL

"I love badminton so much and have the passion to promote this sport so that it will become more popular in the country," said Sean. "Our centre is convenient for the residents in the area to play badminton in a proper environment," he added. There is also a Proshop that sells badminton equipment and a coaching course

more concerned about the departure of Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, bombarding manager Arsene Wenger with questions, Rajagobal was in a more relaxed mood. "We won't be having any new signings with us," Rajagobal said as the crowd burst into laughter. The remark even got Wenger smiling. "The boys are pumped and excited to play Arsenal. As you know we play Singapore (Round 2) in the pre-World Cup (tournament) and this will be a good place for me to test our players." Malaysia visit Singapore at the Jalan Besar Stadium on July

23 while the return-leg will be held in Bukit Jalil on July 28. With the exception of hitman Safee Sali, Rajagobal's lads are all fit to see action against the English side. "Even Khairul (Fahmi Che Mat) has recovered but I haven't decided if I will field him." Only two of the national players — Amirul Hadi Zainal and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha — idolise Arsenal while the others, including Rajagobal himself, are die-hard Manchester United fans. So will this make things easier for Rajagobal and Co to disarm the Gunners? "Although I am a Manchester

United fan we still went all out in our match against them (in 2009). I expect no different this time around. "We've seen how they play and they are Arsenal… a fantastic team with world class players. They play attacking football so we anticipate an interesting time." Arsenal and Wenger, meanwhile, are clueless about the Malaysian team. Striker Robin Van Persie and rightback Bacary Sagna admitted to not having seen the national team before. Hopefully, Rajagobal and Co will be able to spring some surprises and leave the crowd smiling for a long time.

PAVILION is the place to be for Liverpool fans who have yet to visit the English club's homeground, Anfield. "It's a good idea to replicate parts of Anfield here, especially the dressing room and the Shankley Gates," said lifelong Liverpool fan Cameron Ng. "It gives the opportunity to those who have not had the chance to visit the club's stadium." Cameron went to Anfield a couple of years ago. He even managed to watch Liverpool's derby match against Everton. While he recalled his memories, the 32-year-old is looking forward to watching his team play against our Tigers. "In Anfield, I was with fans I did not know. This time I

can enjoy the match with my friends and the Liverpool Supporters Club Malaysia (LSCM). I'm certain it will be a different experience. Cameron also commended the efforts being put in to make the shopping mall a beautiful sight for Liverpool fans. He enjoyed the walk of fame as it shows the club's proud history. He is looking forward to meeting the players when they conduct a coaching session for selected kids at the futsal centre he runs in Bandar Utama. The association was founded as the Federal Territory Football Association in 1974 and competed in the local football tournaments in 1979 before being renamed Kuala Lumpur FA in 1986. Ryu clinches first Major victory in all-Korean playoff

S O U T H KO R E A ' S Ry u So-yeon won her first Major title by beating compatriot Seo Hee-kyung by three shots in a three-hole playoff for the weather-delayed US Women's Open this morning. T h e 2 1 - y e a r- o l d Ry u rolled in a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th green, the third extra hole, to complete her maiden LPGA victory before pumping her right fist in delight. She w as t he n s o a ke d in champagne by fellow Korean players and former winners Pak Se-ri and Ji Eun-hee after they ran across the green to join her in joyful celebration at The Broadmoor. "Unbelievable," a beaming Ryu said greenside after going par-birdie-birdie over the 16th, 17th and 18th holes in the playoff. "I won KLPGA (Korean LPGA) tournaments six times but no Majors and now I have won the US Women's Open. I can't believe it," she squealed in delight. The orange-and-white clad Ryu, who plays most of her golf on her home circuit, became the fifth Korean to win the US Women's Open after her role model Pak (1998), Birdie Kim (2005), Park In-bee (2008) and Ji (2009). She was especially delighted that Pak and Ji both

stayed on at The Broadmoor to watch her secure victory after the year's third Major had been heavily disrupted by rain, thunder and lightning over the previous four days. "When I was a youngster, Se-ri was my hero," Ryu said. "Se-ri is (for) all the Korean golf players a hero. "And Eun-hee, I practise with Eun-hee in Australia for winter training so I am really proud of it because my hero Se-ri was rooting for me today so it's a really big power."

Ryu and S eo finished the regulation 72 holes at three-under 281, Seo having closed with a three-under 68 shortly before play was suspended because of darkness yesterday. Ryu was one stroke behind overnight with three holes to play but she sank a six-foot birdie putt at the par-four for a 69 to force a playoff with Seo. She conceded that playing the final three holes twice this morning had given her a welcome bonus. "Sure, it was really good

Bjorn in, Vijay out

DENMARK'S Thomas Bjorn has earned a last-gasp place at this week's British Open following the withdrawal of former world No. 1 Vijay Singh. Bjorn came agonisingly close to winning the championship when it was last played at Sandwich in 2003, finishing joint second with Vijay behind American Ben Curtis. Vijay has had back problems recently and pulled out of the AT&T National in Pennsylvania this month after 36 holes. "I'm very pleased but then obviously very sorry for Vijay as no one wants to withdraw from any event let alone a Major," Bjorn said this morning. "I arrived here today not knowing what I was going to do all week and whether or not I should play a full practice round each day or just stay on the range.

"But now that I'm in the Open it means that I will now be able to prepare properly." the Dane added. Bjorn, 40, who won the Qatar Masters in February and was one of European Ryder Cup skipper Colin Montgomerie's deputy captains at Celtic Manor in October, led after the third round at Royal St George's eight years ago. The Dane's title challenge unravelled in spectacular fashion, though. Bjorn arrived at the 15th hole with a three-shot lead over Curtis but immediately dropped a stroke. He then found sand at the par-three 16th and doublebogeyed after twice watching his escape attempt spin back into the bunker. Bjorn also bogeyed the 17th after driving into the right rough and finished one stroke adrift of Curtis. — Reuters

PARIS: TENNIS

No word on return date THERE was no word on when world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki or multiple Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters — the top two ranked women's tennis players — would return to action. Wozniacki injured a shoulder last week in the Swedish Open but her website carried no mention of the injury, just a Twitter note stating: "21 today :) great to be home and celebrate with my friends and family :)." Wozniacki celebrates her 21st birthday today. Clijsters reinjured her right ankle at the Unicef Open in early June and is "forced to rest a few weeks," a statement on her website said. Wozniacki has been No. 1 for a total of 39 weeks, including the last 21. The 39 weeks on top is tied with Amelie Mauresmo for ninth most. Wozniacki has 9,915 rankings points with Clijsters second at 7,625. Vera Zvonareva (6,695) is third with Victoria Azarenka (6,465) in fourth and Maria Sharapova (6,141) fifth. Li Na has 5,855 points, which is good for a No. 6 ranking. Petra Kvitova (5,437) is seventh and Francesca Schiavone (4,860) eighth. Marion Bartoli (4,230) and Samantha Stosur (3,405) complete the Top 10. Roberta Vinci won last week's Budapest Grand Prix and went from 25th to 23rd in the rankings. Polona Hercog took the Swedish Open — her first WTA title — and jumped from 53rd to No. 37. The marks are career bests for Vinci and Hercog. — Agencies

McIlroy tees off with Els, Fowler RORY MCILROY will begin his quest to add the British Open title to his US Open crown in the company of multiple Major winner Ernie Els and rising American star Rickie Fowler. The trio will tee off in Friday's first round at 3pm (Malaysian time) at the Royal St George's Course in Sandwich, south-east of London, where the 22-year-old McIlroy will aim to be become the youngest winner of the British Open since 1893. South Africa's Els will be bidding to add to his 2002 British Open title with Fowler seeking his first Major triumph. McIlroy, whose win at the Bethesda course in Maryland in June made him the youngest US Open champion since American great Bobby Jones in 1923, enjoyed a stellar start to last year's British Open at St Andrews, shooting a record-equalling 63 and finishing third despite a second round 80 in bad weather on the Scottish course. The Northern Ireland youngster has not played a competitive round of golf since winning the US Open. This year's British Open will be started by American Jerry Kelly, who is due to hit the first shot at 1.30pm (Malaysian time). — AFP

Ferrari victory good for F1

Red Bull boss Horner stresses F1 not about an individual RED BULL chief Christian Horner mounted a rapid damage limitation exercise yesterday as the dust settled on an incident-filled British Grand Prix at Silverstone highlighted by a potential "team orders" row in his team. He admitted he was surprised by Mark Webber's decision to ignore his instructions from the pit wall — and did his best to paper over a rift that may yet blow this season's championship wide open. Horner, who had been under great strain throughout a weekend of rows and meetings over the controversial mid-season introduction of new technical rules, looked stretched to the limits of his patience as a post-race media scrum focused on Red Bull's decisions. He did his best to justify why he ordered a procession and not a race in the closing laps as Webber, in a clearly faster car, closed in on his second-placed teammate and championship

leader Sebastian Vettel. "This is something we have to discuss in private, behind closed doors. But, at the end of the day, the team are the biggest thing — and no individual is bigger than the team," said Horner. Webber, who admitted he was furious and had not obeyed the orders as he fought to beat his teammate, will clearly need some convincing — 12 months earlier he had won at Silverstone and famously quipped "not bad for a No. 2 driver" on his slowing down lap. Vettel, struggling for competitive speed on worn tyres, came home second behind Ferrari hero Fernando Alonso, who registered the Italian team's first win this season and set up a possible revival in fortunes. The second placed finish helped champion Vettel increase his runaway lead in the title race to 80 points ahead of Webber, who is now second,

Dominguez doping case dropped

A SPANISH judge this morning threw out a case against world steeplechase champion Marta Dominguez (pic) for allegedly administering medication to a friend without a licence. The decision follows a previous verdict delivered in April to clear the 35-year-old of trafficking in performanceenhancing drugs. Dominguez, who won the 3,000m steeplechase gold in Berlin in 2009 after taking silver in the 5,000m in 2003 and 2001, was one of 14 people detained for questioning in December as part of a probe into doping in Spanish athletics. Six of the 14 suspects were charged with public health offences and trafficking in

illegal substances, including Dominguez' coach Cezar Perez. Dominguez repeatedly denied the allegations against her, although in an interview published in January she said she had recommended an "authorised" treatment to an athlete friend who was injured. Dominguez, who is expecting her first child, has said she plans to return to competition once she has recuperated after her pregnancy. She had already announced that she would not defend her world title in the 2011 event in the South Korean city of Daegu because of her pregnancy but intended to return next year to compete in the London Olympics. — AFP

FERRARI'S first win of the Formula 1 season owed something to luck, something to changes in the engine regulations and a lot to hard work and the sheer talent of Fernando Alonso. Was the British Grand Prix simply a one-off, gifted by a rare Red Bull pitstop problem? Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali hoped not. "Honestly, today the race pace was good. Even without that mistake, we could have won the race in any case. Today we were very strong," he told reporters. "I really hope that after this one some others will come." Sport is full of ifs, might haves and should haves but Ferrari's win was overdue and good news for F1 as a whole. They are the original glamour team, on the Formula 1 scene since the very first championship in 1950 and the sport needs them to be competitive. In a season dominated by Vettel, whose 80 point lead means he could afford to go away until September and still lead the championship, a different winner is welcome. — Reuters

DRESDEN: FOOTBALL/ WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

Boos for Marta bemuse Brazil coach

AFTER his side's dramatic quarterfinal exit from the women's World Cup at the hands of the USA, Brazil coach Kleiton Lima said he fails to understand the jeers for star striker Marta. The 25-year-old, who has been voted women's world Player-of-the-Year for the last five seasons, scored both Brazil goals as they drew 2-2 with the USA in yesterday's quarterfinal, but lost 5-3 on penalties. The Americans equalised deep in injury time of extra time when Abby Wambach's 122nd minute header took the game to penalties after Marta had earlier put her side 2-1 up with a strike in the 92nd minute following her 68th minute penalty. Despite her obvious talent, Marta was booed and jeered several times by the Dresden crowd, just as she has been at all four of Brazil's matches at Germany 2011. Lima said he was surprised by the reaction from the

football-mad German public and said it was a pity Marta's talents will no longer feature in the tournament. "I actually don't understand why there were so many whistles, she is one of the best players in the world with her creativity and style," said Lima. "I don't understand it because there were whistles from the first game, she has made a huge contribution to the team, she scored two goals and supported the team, she was a genius. "It is a shame we couldn't re a c h t h e semifinal to show more of what she can do." Having also netted twice in the group stage win over Norway, Marta now has four goals from Germany 2011 to give her 14 World Cup goals in total to make her the all-time joint top scorer alongside Germany's

Birgit Prinz. But USA coach Pia Sundhage perfectly summed up the difference between the teams as the USA's refusal to give up brought them back from the verge of defeat. "Marta is the best player in the world, she is phenomenal, but this team is better than one player," said the 51-yearold. — AFP

MOST of the superstars have failed to make an impact at the on-going Copa America thus far. But this is not the case for Colombia's prolific striker Radamel Falcao, who has been instrumental in assisting the Cafeteros or Coffee Growers to become the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals by beating Bolivia 2-0 in their last Group A match at Mario Kempes Stadium yesterday. The win means Colombia finished on top of the group — which also comprises favourites

and hosts Argentina and Costa Rica — with seven points from three matches. Falcao, 25, was in his element against Bolivia and in the process scored both the goals, with one coming from the penalty spot, to the jubilation of his teammates and fans. This was the first time he had scored two goals in a match for his national team. He now has 11 goals from 34 matches for Colombia since making his debut in 2007. The Porto superstar, for the record, scored 16 goals from

22 matches last season to steer the club to the Portuguese title. Then amazingly, he also struck another 18 goals from 16 matches as Porto won the Europa League in style. So it is not a big surprise to see the Chelsea target doing fine at the Copa and he is threatening to be deadlier. Falcao is a dynamic striker who has the ability to finish with both feet, has a strong burst of pace and a powerful header. He began playing at Fair Play, a Colombian football school,

before joining the youth system of Bogota's Millonarios club. At 15, he was discovered by River Plate while playing for the Colombia Under-17 side and recruited to join the Argentine side's legendary youth academy and reserve system. Interestingly, before signing his first professional contract with River Plate, he had just began studying journalism at the University of Palermo in Buenos Aires. Falcao, despite Colombia's success of making the last eight, sounded a note of caution,

Farias reminds Venezuela fans they are not there yet

SURPRISE package Venezuela's coach Cesar Farias (pic) is highly satisfied with the way things have been going in the Copa America so far, but says they have not qualified for the next round of the competition j u s t yet.

The Venezuelans are now on top of Group B with four points from two games after a draw against champions and hot favourites Brazil and a win over Ecuador but insisted that his side must keep their feet on the ground. "We have no suspended or injured players. We are adding positive things that allow us to keep on dreaming, and that means we are doing something well, but we have not qualified," said Farias. He then looked back at his side's 1-0 win over Ecuador last Saturday and was full of praise for the team.

"We gave what we could give and saw a team that pressed, believed, accelerated, defended when had to and played when needed. This is part of the growth of the players. This is a different team and the results follow it," he said. Farias made it clear that Venezuela's third match against formidable Paraguay, also in the running for the last eight, on Thursday (6.15am) will be crucial and said they have to remain level-headed and not become overconfident. "We have to be very focused with this good chance. In the first game (against Brazil)

the team held the result, the second (against Ecuador) we were more released, and in the third one, we will have to play with the result and with the pressure, which is less than Paraguay's." G e r m a ny - b a s e d m i d fielders Tomas Rincon and Juan Arango, who play for Hamburg and B or ussi a Monchengladbach respectively, will have to perform to help Venezuela get a result against Paraguay. This is also the case for striker Giancarlo Maldonado, who is plying his trade at Mexican club Atlante.

though. He understands the fans may be excited about the team's results so far but called for vigilance. "The Colombian fans must stay trustful and calm. We are not the best nor the worst. We are not in the final, we have just moved on to the second stage and we need to have our feet on the ground," he said. Meanwhile, Falcao stressed he was never worried about his personal record after failing to score in the first two matches against Argentina and Costa Rica.

"Our priority is the team, it does not matter who scores, the important thing is for us to grow as a unit. Our goal is for Colombia to win. Personal goals will come as the team get stronger," he said. Which team would he like to face in the quarterfinals? "At this point, you can face any team. If we want to aspire to continue in the competition we have to beat anyone," he said. Falcao and his teammates are enjoying the Colombian salsa, at least for now.

Cavani, Godin to miss Uruguay's clash against Mexico URUGUAY striker Edinson Cavani may miss their Group C clash against Mexico tomorrow (8.45am) as a team doctor claims he needs to rest following a knee injury. The 24-year-old Napoli star sustained the problem during last Friday's 1-1 draw against Chile, and doctor Alberto Pan confirmed the striker's injuries could force him out of the final group match. "Cavani has a light sprain to his right knee and he is having treatment. Obviously he must rest now," Pan told Corriere dello Sport. "His recovery depends, but we cannot be exactly sure when he will be back. It would be premature to give a date."

The good news for Uruguay is that they still have quality strikers to rely on in Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan. Forlan may not have enjoyed a great outing in Primera Liga last season but has been able to raise his game in the tournament. He is still key in the Uruguayans' bid to progress to the next round. Influential centreback Diego Godin, who also plays for Atletico, is another set to miss the match against the pointless Mexicans. Uruguay, under coach Oscar Tabarez, are now third in the group following draws against Peru and Chile. They should not have much problems in getting the better of the young Mexicans.

Gunners are goners

ARSENAL are set to ship out Nicklas Bendtner and Manuel Almunia this week. Bendtner left for Germany at the weekend to have talks with Borussia Dortmund while Sporting Lisbon are also interested in signing the striker. Arsenal want £12m (RM57.5m) for the Dane but are likely to have to accept around £9m. Meanwhile, Almunia is set to return to Spain. The goalkeeper, signed from Celta Vigo seven years ago, is likely to join Atletico Madrid or moneybags Malaga, with boss Arsene Wenger believed to want a fee of around £1m for the 34-yearold. Both players had been expected to quit the club with Almunia — despite captaining Arsenal regularly in the 2009-10 season — falling down the pecking order behind young Polish stars Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny.

Blues target De Rossi CHELSEA boss Andre VillasBoas is preparing to offer £18m (RM86.2m) for Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi. Fears over the future of Michael Essien has prompted Villas-Boas to sign a world class midfielder. Essien is fighting to save his career after a third serious knee injury in three years — and De Rossi is seen as the man to take his place in midfield. The Italian International, who has only a year left on his contract, has become disillusioned with life at the Olympic Stadium, giving Villas Boas the green light to make his move.

Johnson held talks with Wolves officials at Molineux this morning and then had a medical. The player said on Sky Sports News yesterday: "We're halfway there. It wasn't an easy decision, I enjoyed my time at Birmingham but relegation half made the decision for me. "I want to be in the Premier League and I'm sure everyone can appreciate that. But I enjoyed my time at Birmingham."

Birmingham, Villa settle McLeish row

Ivory Coast international to add sting to Arsenal attack ARSENAL have completed the signing of highly-rated Lille striker Gervinho (pic). The Ivory Coast international, who helped the French side to their first league title in 57 years last season, arrives at the Emirates for a fee believed to be €12m (RM50.7m), although the length of his contract has not been revealed. Wenger revealed the news about Gervinho as his side arrived in Malaysia, without their newly acquired striker, ahead of their pre-season tour of Asia. "Gervinho has come back from holiday and signed," said Wenger. "He had a medical on (last) Thursday and we sent him back home to sort things out for two days. He has a family with children. "He came back yesterday and starts his fitness programme in London today (yesterday). He is officially an Arsenal player now. I decided not to take him because he had had no training sessions." Arsenal reportedly agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old last month, but have spent the intervening period in talks with Lille over an agreed price. Ger vinho becomes the second summer arrival at Emirates Stadium after the signing of fullback Carl Jenkinson from Charlton Athletic, as Wenger looks to revamp his squad in a bid to end the club's six-year trophy drought next season. The news could well con-

stitute the final nail in the coffin of Nicklas Bendtner's Arsenal career, with the striker now the subject of interest from German club Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Lisbon as well as several English clubs. There was more welcome news for the Arsenal fans, as Wenger believes that attacker Samir Nasri should be staying at the club — despite reports linking him to a move to Manchester United, as his contract is running down to its last year this coming season. "I expect Nasri to stay. There is always speculation, but he is committed to the club right now," said the Frenchman. However, question marks remain over Arsenal's ability to hold on to the player in the long run, but Wenger was hopeful that he could persuade his compatriot to sign a contract extension. When asked about the matter, Wenger said: "Oh yes, why not?" Wenger, however, refused to speak on captain Cesc Fabregas' absence from the squad in Malaysia. The media is rife with reports that the Spaniard is close to a move to Barcelona. "I never speak on matters that happen behind closed doors. I have given the media enough headlines and I don't want to add any more," he said. However, Wenger told Sky Sports News: "Cesc loves the club and hopefully we

will manage. We know that this story for Barca has gone on for years now, we have to close that and fo c us on the season, hopefully with Cesc Fabregas." Speaking about Arsenal's first tour to Asia in 12 years, Wenger admitted his players were tired from the journey across two continents, but pleased to have a "new experience". "Arsenal know that we have a big fan base in As i a , an d we h av e n ' t b e e n here since 1999. Physically we are jet-lagged, but overall this will be a new experience for the team."

ASTON VILLA and B i r m i n g h a m C it y h av e reached a compensation agreement following manager Alex McLeish's cross-town move. McLeish resigned as Blues b oss af ter t hre e-and-ahalf-years at St Andrew's last month, following Birmingham's relegation from the Premier League and eventually made the move to arch-rivals Villa, still in the top flight, who saw Gerard Houllier step down on health grounds. Birmingham, who have already appointed Chris Hughton as their new boss, demanded Villa pay them compensation for the remaining two years of former Scotland centrehalf McLeish's contract and initially threatened legal action. Birmingham's joint first team coach, Peter Grant, and chief medical officer, Dr Ian McGuinness, are also moving to Villa. But other members of McLeish's backroom staff, joint first team coach Andy Watson and goalkeeping coach Dave Watson, are not following them to Villa Park. A joint statement issued on behalf of both Midlands clubs said Monday: "Birmingham City and Aston Villa can confirm that agreement has been reached between the parties ending the legal disputes surrounding Alex McLeish's departure. "Aston Villa has agreed to pay Birmingham City an undisclosed figure following negotiations whereby the parties have agreed to bring to an end all disputes, including the further recruitment of Peter Grant and Dr Ian McGuinness by Aston Villa." — AFP

Sneijder refuses to rule out move

HOLLAND midfielder Wesley Sneijder, said to be a target for Manchester United and Malaga, has admitted that he is prepared to leave current club Inter Milan should they accept a bid for him. "Of course, if the club decides to sell, I'll go where they tell me to go, but I would be sad to leave," Sneijder is

quoted as saying in an interview with the Italian edition of Vanity Fair magazine. "My wife and I are happy in Milan, and I would miss Inter, but that's football. When Real Madrid sold me to Inter, at the time I wanted to stay in Spain." Inter last week agreed a deal to sign young Argentine midfielder Ricky Alvarez

from Velez Sarsfield, seen as a potential replacement for Sneijder. However, the club's new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, speaking at their pre-season training camp in Pinzolo in the Italian Alps, has said he is confident that the playmaker will stay put. "Sneijder is a great player, a top player. His approach

has been more than positive. He is here and he wants to remain with us." Manche ste r Un ite d assistant manager Rene Meu lenste en, hims elf a Dutchman, said last week that he "could not think of a more ideal player for our team", and former United defender Gary Neville echoed those comments.

"He is a great player who has played at some great football clubs like Real Madrid and Inter and it won't faze him coming here", he said. "He would be a great signing, but I'm sure that there are a number of clubs that are looking at him. I hope that Manchester United get him, but I don't know whether that will be the case." — AFP

Lucio slams Brazil’s below par performance

NO NONSENSE: Lucio listens to a question during a Press conference before a training session — AFPpic

CAPTAIN Lucio slammed Brazil’s Copa America performances this morning saying the holders needed to improve their commitment in the colours of the five-time world champions. Brazil have drawn both their Group B matches so far, leaving them equal second in the standings with Paraguay two points behind surprise leaders Venezuela.

“Noone is happy with these results,” Lucio told reporters at Brazil’s training base outside the capital. “We know the quality of players we have in this squad, we must show much more, more seriousness and more commitment to the Brazilian national team shirt,” he said. “I think the badge on the shirt is more important than the name on the back,” said the 33-year-old central defender, a World Cup winner in 2002 and one of the few survivors from Brazil’s 2010 team in coach Mano Menezes’s young squad. “Each one of us has to looking for an improvement and understand that you have to give a bit more of yourself because we’re

not getting the results. “We know we have to put a bit more energy, more seriousness and competitiveness into our game. Everyone will have to show something with their performance because this is the Brazil team.” Brazil’s performances have been fitful, only occasionally showing what Menezes wants in his efforts to return to their traditional attacking game — usually when playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso is involved. Teenage forward Neymar, Ganso’s club mate for newly crowned South American champions Santos, has shown little of the sparkle that won him a place in the team although Menezes defended him after a lukewarm performance against Paraguay.

“He is one of the great hopes we have. He’s already a reality for Santos and he showed good form in some friendlies with the national team,” Menezes said. “But we have to wait for him and this tournament also is much harder than I expected.” Menezes said the 19-yearold must learn to release the ball more quickly and not go solo too much. “Against Paraguay his way was usually blocked by three opponents. He needs to realize that more quickly because behind those defenders there’s lots of space (others can run into).” Brazil meet Ecuador In Cordoba on Thursday (8.45am) looking to secure a place in the quarterfinals, while Paraguay meet Venezuela in Salta (6.15am). — Reuters

Mexico coach urges rule change before next Copa

MEXICO coach Luis Tena said this morning he hoped the rules would be changed to allow his country to compete on an equal footing with teams from South America at future editions of the Copa America. Mexico are allowed only to field what is effectively

an under-22 side at the Copa America because of rules imposed by Concacaf, the federation they belong to, which governs football in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Concacaf are worried that if their teams send full-strength squads to the

Copa America, they will field only under-strength teams at their own regional tournament, the Gold Cup. This year’s Gold Cup was played in June, just before the Copa, and Mexico, fielding a full-strength squad, won it. But the young Mexican

squad at the Copa has struggled to hold their own against the stronger South American teams. Mexico were beaten by Chile and Peru in their opening two matches and are the only side in the tournament without a point. “I hope this is the last

time that Mexico come to a Copa America with a squad with an age limit,” Tena, who is Mexico’s assistant coach but is in charge for the Copa, told a news conference in Buenos Aires ahead of his side’s last Group C match against Uruguay. “It would have been very

interesting to see our full team, which had such an amazing Gold Cup, playing against teams as strong as those that are playing here.” Mexico have to beat Uruguay tomorrow to stand a chance of squeezing into the quarterfinals of the competition. — Reuters
