KL2020 gazetted by month-end By Terence Fernandez and Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani mmnews@mmail.com.my DESPITE attempts to further delay the implementation of the Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020, City Hall says it will be gazetted by the end of this month. Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the draft plan, launched three years ago, has been delayed long enough and he will ensure it is gazetted. “Yes, there are parties out there who want to further delay the process, but I am going to exercise my authority as mayor to ensure it is gazetted,” he told The Malay Mail. He was responding to a question that the implementation of the draft plan would be further delayed as the issue was being politicised by various political parties to gain votes. Many residents’ groups had objected against the draft, taking their concerns to politicians from both sides of the divide, but Ahmad Fuad said the time for objections was over and now is the time to put the plan into action. “We have already consulted them and followed procedure. What more can we do?” Launched in May 2009, City Hall had spent a year conducting public hearings with various residents associations, developers, NGOs, religious groups and other focus groups, which ended on June 2009. All objections and suggestions by stakeholders in the city had been vetted by City Hall, and also gone through recommendations by the draft plan’s Public Opinion Hearing Committee (POHC). The draft was originally expected to be gazetted by the middle of last year. Ahmad Fuad said the gazette was postponed due to the number of suggestions received from residents. • Continued on pg2

Police now looking for missing ‘pet hotel’ owners

POLICE have unearthed 12 cat graves scattered within the compound of a double-storey house in Sungai Buloh believed to belong to the owners of Petknode, a pet boarding centre. The discovery of the ‘pet cemetery’ was made about a week ago by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), police told The Malay Mail. Now, police are urging the two owners of Petknode to turn themselves in to further assist ongoing investigation of the case. Selangor deputy Crime Investigation Department chief (Intelligence and Operation), ACP Rosli Mohd Isa, said the duo had been out of contact since police first obtained their statements two weeks ago, shortly after hundreds of cats were found maltreated at the centre run by them. “Based on police reports lodged, a total of 169 cats have been found alive while another six are still missing,” he told The Paper That Cares yesterday.

By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my He said 14 cats had been found dead, some at the centre in Damansara Damai, with 12 of them found buried at the house in Desa Moccis, Sungai Buloh, purportedly belonging to the Petknode owners. “The police, together with the DVS, have been investigating the case to get to the bottom of things. Although the case involves only pets and not humans, we take this matter very seriously.” Police have classified the case under Section 428 of the Penal Code for “mischief by killing or maiming any animals of the value of five ringgit”, an offence punishable by law with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine or both. Following the latest discovery of the cat graves, non-governmental organisations and animal lovers have expressed their shock and outrage.

Inch perfect

On the night of Sept 4, hundreds of cat owners, who had entrusted their pets to the ‘cat hotel’ during the Hari Raya holidays, were shocked after they found the animals left unattended at the Damansara Damai centre. With the approval of the area’s security guards and police, the pet owners as well as concerned animal lovers and volunteers broke into the premises and rescued about 100 pets there. Nine felines were found dead that night. After lodging police reports, the ‘rescue team’ of owners and volunteers then went to the Sungai Buloh house where 200 more cats were rescued. At both premises, the cats were kept in inhumane and unsanitary conditions, and left starving from insufficient food. So far, at least 75 police reports have been lodged over the incident. • More on pg3 TEACHER Shuvinothini Arumugam, 33, (left) and student Muhammad Shukri Amin Shuib Wee, 12, setting the tables at a ‘safe’ distance at the SK (2) Sultan Alam Shah’s school hall for students sitting for the Primary School Assessment Test or Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) which begins today. Blueprint for development ● From pg1 “It is almost completed. They (the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry) have given it (the draft) back to us, so we will begin printing and I hope it will be gazetted by end of this month." He said City Hall had to sieve through thousands of suggestions from all parties and had nailed down final decisions on the future of KL's development, adding not all suggestions would be implemented. "We received about 60,000 suggestions from the residents and 20,000 from professionals. Whatever complaints for them, we listened through our hearing committee, but it doesn’t mean we have to follow their views. “We can listen but because we are talking about benefits to almost everybody. Majority comes first." Once gazetted, the plan would become the blueprint for development in the city right up to 2020.

Controversial hillslope project expected to start soon DEVELOPMENT works on the controversial Damansara 21 projec t in Medan Damansara here is expected to start soon. After almost four years of lying idle, the project is expected to resume culminating with 16 bungalows expected to be built on the hillslope. The Malay Mail learnt an announcement is expected to be made by KL City Hall (DBKL) to residents later this evening. The scheduled announcement, although not something new, will clear the air on whether the project would ever take root since earthworks on the site started four years ago. The project came to a standstill after the plan was temporarily halted by the government in 2008 following the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide tragedy. The Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Ministry and DBKL announced last October they would allow the building of only 16 bungalows. The decision, according to the ministry, was made following numerous inspections by the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) after taking into account of residents'

safety and environmental factors. The ministry's secretarygeneral Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib then said the developer needed to first comply with a list of requirements, including having to meet certain engineering requirements. Work on the hill never started. In April, Ahmad Phesal confirmed developers Selangor Dredging Berhad Properties Sdn Bhd had filed a suit against DBKL. During a radio programme on BFM in the middle of this year, the managing director of the property arm of SDB Properties, Teh Lip Kim, said the judicial review application was filed because DBKL did not formerly inform the company about the 16-units requirement, as they only learnt about the matter from the Press. Teh had said the application was filed against the decision to reduce the number of bungalow units. Last week, residents of Medan Damansara received a letter from DBKL inviting them to a meeting to discuss matters regarding the project. Medan Damansara

Residents Association assistant secretary Randhir Singh said residents were puzzled as to why a meeting was being called as they thought a decision had already been made last year that developers could only build 16 bungalows. "It's been a long battle for us. We hope there will not be a sudden turn of events as we understood the matter had been finalised last year," he said. The residents voiced their displeasure over the project

and also urged the government to scrap it. They, however, agreed with the project when assured last year only 16 homes would be built. "We've come a long way fighting for our rights. We've even been slapped with a defamation suit by the developer. Our former chairman and also a party in the suit, Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Shukor Abdullah, passed away recently. We hope the authorities don't go back on their word as it would be another uphill battle for us," said Randhir.

Public must be aware of KL2020 plan THE Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 must be shown to the public before it is gazetted. This was the view Coalition to Save Kuala Lumpur (CSKL) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman on Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail's confirmation the draft plan would be gazetted by the end of this month. He said while it is not required under the law to inform the public of the draft, residents have a right to be informed of the amendments made. CSKL comprises of 35 residents' associations in KL and

Although it is not required to show us the plan but after objections, we have the rights to ask what amendments were made. “So instead of gazetting before showing then, they might as well show us before gazetting. our concerns,” he told The Malay Mail. Abdul Aziz also reiterated the draft plan violates legislations, such as theTown and Country Planning Act, the National Physical Plan (NPP) the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020 (KLSP 2020) and the National Urbanisation Policy (NUP). Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar also echoed Abdul Aziz’s concern. “As such, in the end, they pretty much will get away with any draft since nothing

is minuted in a manner which can immediately be indentified and cross-checked.” Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya City councillor and Bukit Gasing RA member Derek Fernandez said the plan must not secede on the promise made by former Mayor Tan Sri Kamaruzzaman Shariff in safeguarding the green lung. “The Mayor must be honest with KL’s commitment as world-class and meet requirements for public open space for a world-class city. The public open space minimum requirement is two hectares per 1,000 population which means there must be

no development for Bukit Gasing on KL side. “City Hall must uphold the promise made by previous Mayor Tan Sri Kamaruzzaman Shariff that no development would be carried on the KL side of the hill,” said the lawyer. Bangsar Baru Resident Association president Datuk George Joseph admitted City Hall could not meet every demand but was looking forward for the plan to be implemented after much delay. “We cannot expect 100 per cent of our demands are met but, hopefully, they include everything we suggested."

Heartless minders Shock over discovery of cat graves

FOLLOWING the discovery of 12 cat graves in the compound of the Sungai Buloh house belonging to the two male owners of Petknode, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) animal lovers expressed their outrage to The Malay Mail. ● Wani Muttiah, MDDB founder: "The Petknode issue, and now with the discovery of 12 buried cats, reflects poorly on the laws we have for animals in Malaysia. "In other countries, if you want to open a pet centre, you would have to undergo a thorough screening on various aspects. There would be checks on you to determine if you are a genuine animal lover, if you had experience in caring for animals, the extent of your resources in caring for animals and manpower availability, just to name a few. "It was reported that Petknode's licence expired. I believe lack of enforcement and monitoring allowed such unlicensed pet businesses to bloom. "If our laws are not looked into immediately, this incident would repeat in the future." ● Bazilah Bahrin, animal lover who was part of the pet rescue team: "The Petknode owners were just too damn greedy. They know the long Hari Raya holidays would be a highly profitable period for their business as many cat owners are Muslims and they would be travelling outstation. "I believe this was a clearcut case of them biting off more than they could chew. They did not have the manpower to care for the animals, and when the felines died, they just took the easy way out and buried them. "They could have buried the 12 cats out of pressure upon knowing that they couldn't cope."

By THASHA JAYAMANOGARAN thasha@mmail.com.my

While Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) said this disheartening discovery reflected poorly on the laws Malaysia has for animals, the

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) attributed the finding of the graves to the concerted effort of NGOs, animal lovers, vol-

unteers and the media over the past two weeks. Two animal lovers also opined the owners of the 'cat hotel' were greedy and advised parents to educate their children to love animals from young.

Misunderstanding triggers gang fight at wedding FOUR men were injured by an enraged Indonesian after brushing of his shoulder during a wedding ceremony at Taman Subang Mas here on Sunday night. Selangor deputy CID chief (Intelligence/Operation), ACP Rosli Mohd Isa said the 10.45pm incident was sparked when a Sabahan man accidentally brushed the shoulder of an Indonesian man. “The Indonesian demanded an apology from the Sabahan and when this was denied, the Indonesian grew into a rage and argued with several of the wedding guests," said Rosli. "The Indonesian went back to his nearby house to retrieve a knife and upon returning to the wedding reception, attacked several guests who were mostly Sabahans."

By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

Rosli said the guests tried to restrain the Indonesian and in the ensuing scuffle, four men were slashed on their hands and bodies. "This led to a gang fight between Sabahans and Indonesians at the wedding," he said. Police arrested two Indonesians and a Sabahan, all in their 20s, for questioning. The four injured were taken to Hospital Serdang for outpatient treatment. It is believed those involved in the fracas were construction workers from the same project site. Police are investigating the root cause could be a grudge between factions at the work site.

KLANG

Arsonist arrested after making police report ● Christine Chin, SPCA president: "If it wasn't for the concerted effort of various NGOs and animal supporters to rescue the maltreated cats from Petknode two weeks ago, the remains of the 12 cats would probably not have surfaced at all. There would be no pressure on the authorities. "The NGOs were the ones who advised cat owners to lodge police reports. There have been 75 reports lodged with police to date. It these reports were not made, police and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) would not have looked into the matter. "The media as well as those on social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, must be thanked for their help in spreading the word fast."

CHIN: Authorities under pressure to take animal cases seriously

● Sheila, animal lover who was part of the pet rescue team: "I'm shocked! I believe all cruelty to animals stem from lack of education by parents at home. "I have encountered children kicking pets and other animals while their parents

SHEILA: Have sadly witnessed children kicking pets

would just look on! This would drive kids to treat animals like toys and eventually grow up to become animal abusers. To them, abusing pets or other living things would not be a big deal. "Parents must educate their kids from young to love and treat animals with care."

A BUNGLING arsonist torched two cars and in his getaway, lost control of his own car which crashed into a power sub-station here on Sunday. This proved to be his own undoing when, in making a police report of his accident, he was identified as the culprit who destroyed the two cars. North Klang district police chief, Supt Shukor Sulong said the incident began at 7.30pm when the suspect was seen loitering at Taman Bukit Raja. "The suspect, in his 20s, seeing a Toyota Hilux parked his own Proton Wira beside it, poured petrol on the Toyota and set it ablaze," said Shukor. "The fire spread to the driver seat and floormat of the suspect's own car when he threw the floormat out on the bonnet of a Proton Gen2 which in turn caught fire." Panicking, the suspect drove

off but lost control of his car which skidded and rammed into a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) sub-station, about 100 metres from where the other two cars were burning. The suspect then went to the Bukit Raja police station to lodge a report on his accident but was recognised by an eyewitness reporting on the arson. Police arrested the man and are investigating his motive.

He was the PKA general manager who left the authority cash-rich before the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) débâcle under the watch of his successor, O.C. Phang. PKA's nomination for Rajasingam's re-appointment as an independent director earlier this year was rejected by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Chor Har. While Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had initially approved Abdul Rahim's appointment, it is understood

the premier left it to the civil service to decide. “The fact Abdul Rahim worked in Bintulu may have put paid to his appointment as it cast unnecessary aspersions,” said a source. Bintulu is the constituency of Sarawak MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, whose firm Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, is embroiled in the PKFZ episode. When contacted yesterday, Teh confirmed the rejection. “Apparently, Abdul Rahim was considered too old for

the job,” said Teh, adding that Padman will continue to perform the duties of general manager, including sitting on the PKFZ Board. At the moment, Teh also said, no efforts are being made to find a replacement candidate. Police seek help of cyber crimes experts POLICE are seeking the help of gambling and cyber-related crimes experts to determine if a man arrested in Johor last week is involved with illegal football betting. A source at the Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division in Bukit Aman confirmed receiving a report from Johor police but added further action is pending the findings of experts. The experts comprise police personnel who have undergone training in gambling and cyber crimes. “We have seen the report and it doesn’t link the man to any players, but our experts will investigate and come up with their report," said a senior officer. “If the experts confirm there is no betting element, then we will close the case.” The senior officer added such operations will continue at football stadiums to keep punters at bay. “This is actually part of our harassment action. We tell the public we’re monitoring every game and we will be at the stands on the lookout,” he added. Johor police arrested the alleged bookie during the Johor-Kedah Malaysia Cup clash at the Tan Sri Haji Yunus Stadium in Johor Baru last Tuesday. The suspect, however, was released hours later. Real Time Sportscast (RTS) Malaysia country manager Shamim Imran cried foul after his employee was arrested as he rubbished allegations they are “bookies” and run a “betting

Abdul Rahim's appointment had raised eyebrows, partly because he was way past the government retirement age, but also because his experience was in managing a smaller port like Bintulu, unlike Port Klang, which is the country’s biggest port hub. Some quarters felt if PKA really wanted to appoint a retired portman for the job, they did not need to look further than Datuk M. Rajasingam, 68.

website” saying: “We provide real time results. We do not collect bets." Sports betting is illegal in Malaysia but the law is silent on operators providing live results of matches that are often linked to betting websites worldwide. Also, police are not able to act against websites where its Internet protocol (IP) address is based abroad. Lawyer Bryan Tan was quoted in a Singapore daily in 2009 as saying it is still “an offence to manage a business which transmits information about a sports event for the purpose of gambling”. RTS, developed by Global Sports Services (GSS), has been around for the past 10 years and has a presence in 80 countries worldwide. The local football scene was rocked with match-fixing scandals in 1994 that saw more than 100 players and officials banned. Elements of graft emerged, even at the Under-21 President’s Cup last year. Singaporean bookie K. Rajendran was arrested on June 8 in Seremban and is believed to be the ‘mentor’ of infamous bookie Wilson Raj Perumal, who was arrested by Finnish authorities earlier this year. Efforts to legalise sports betting in Malaysia last year failed due to a public outcry. However, Malaysians continue to place bets on foreign websites, channeling billions of ringgit out of the country annually.

REHEARSALS for the Malaysia Day parade at Dataran Merdeka here on Friday are now in full swing, much to the chagrin of motorists. The rehearsals, which began last Saturday and will continue until Thursday, is from 7am to 10am daily, with some roads closed to traffic from 6am. While the public understand the need for rehearsals, many are upset the resulting traffic congestion has caused them to be late for work. Civil servant Zahid Ahmad, 26, usually leaves his house at Seri Kembangan, Selangor, at 6.30am on work days. "Normally, it takes me an hour to reach my office at Damansara Town Centre but this week I will be late for work due to the Malaysia Day rehearsals," he said. "I have no alternative routes and will have to bear with the diversions and slow-moving traffic." Office worker Khiril Omar, 28, who resides in Putrajaya, said he's fortunate he has flexible working hours. "My office is in Jalan Tun Razak and when I read about

the rehearsals, I decided to leave my house only at 10am to check-in for work before 11am," he said. "Perhaps the government should hold the Merdeka Day or Malaysia Day parades in Putrajaya so that rehearsals are also held there." City taxi driver Muhamad Azizi Rosli, 32, said some of his passengers left their cars at home. "They told me they would rather pay for cab rides for a few days instead of being caught in traffic congestion," he said. Meanwhile, motorists upset with the Malaysia Day rehearsals have voiced their disapproval over Twitter. One of them, @stevomeano said the rehearsals should not be conducted during morning rush hour. Another, @kamal3101 said the rehearsals are making motorists "curse by the basketful early every morning". Other twitterers like @izham_ hny, @zulfo123, @AqilahHalim and @weween urged the government not to hold the Merdeka Day or Malaysia Day parades and rehearsals in KL.

Closures at 16 roads AT least 16 roads around Kuala Lumpur are closed to facilitate the rehearsals for the Malaysia Day parade at Dataran Merdeka on Friday. The closures, from Sept 10 to 16, are from 6am to 10am daily, with rehearsals starting at 7am.

Kuala Lumpur traffic chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said some of the 16 roads have to be closed as early as 4am. The affected roads are Jalan Travers, Jalan Mahameru, Jalan Damansara (Carcosa Seri Negara), Jalan Lembah, Jalan Perdana (National Mosque),

Hishamuddin Roundabout, Jalan Hishamuddin, Jalan Tembusu, Jalan Cenderasari, Jalan Kinabalu, Bukit Amja Laut, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Munsyi Abdullah, Jalan Dang Wangi and Jalan Mahkamah Persekutuan. This year's Malaysia Day

parade, participated by thousands, including students, and representatives from the public and private sectors, also in conjunction with the 54th anniversary of Merdeka, is themed 'Transformasi' 'Berjaya', 'Rakyat Sejahtera' (Successful Transformation for Citizens' Wellbeing).

Grave tradition

Caretakers of Japanese burial site ensure area is pristine FOR 35-year-old Vincent Lessler, being the caretaker of a Japanese graveyard in Jalan Dewan Bahasa is a major responsibility, as the owners follow a proud tradition of remembering their dead. Residing in living quarters close to the site, he and his mother maintain it seven days a week by sweeping the area and trimming the grass and trees themselves. The KL-born Vincent had inherited the duty from his father, Stanley Bernard Lessler, who died two years ago. He had been taking care of the graveyard since shortly after Vincent's birth. "There are over 300 graves here, comprising roughly 200 Japanese soldiers from World War II and civilians," he told The Malay Mail, adding remains of the soldiers had also been brought in from another grave site in Klang. Victims of the 1978 Japan Airlines plane crash in Sungai Buloh and Japanese victims of the 1993 Highland Towers collapse in Ulu Kelang were also laid to rest here. However, Lessler said some of these graves were later exhumed and the remains taken back to Japan for re-burial. The site, which had been designated a graveyard in 1897, underwent renovation in the 1990s with Lessler's current living quarters built

Erosion worries at Taman Bukit Teratai CONSTANT soil erosion which has clogged drainage in Taman Bukit Teratai has residents worried about their safety. When The Malay Mail visited the area yesterday, there was a deep gaping hole near a drain and residents resorted to placing concrete slabs and wooden planks to cover it up to prevent unwary pedestrians and motorists from falling into it. A resident, Kow Chew Yang, said the concrete slabs are a temporary measure and complaints to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) had fallen on deaf ears. Another resident, Kuang Hua Ying, said he and his neighbours fear the situation

the graveyard follows strict guidelines with regards to cleanliness. "We do not allow strangers in and maintain tight security at all times," said Lessler.

Those laid to rest came from various religious backgrounds, including Christianity, Methodism, Buddhism and Shintoism. "Twice a year, a priest from Japan visits us to lead prayers for the souls, which are overseen by the Japanese ambas-

sador to Malaysia. We also supply joss sticks, candles and prayer water for such occasions. Relatives and Japanese tourists also visit the site on a regular basis to pay their respects." Lessler said the graveyard frequently hosts the Obon Festival, a Japanese Buddhist custom which honours the departed spirits of their ancestors. This 500-year-old custom has today evolved into a family reunion in which people return to ancestral family places to visit and clean their ancestors' graves. This is done when the spirits of ancestors supposedly revisit their household altars. The founder of the graveyard, Mori Takamizu, who passed away in 1986, was buried here as well. "The Japanese Embassy and the Japan Club also researched and documented the history of the gravesite in a book that features newspaper cuttings, illustrations and ownership documents from as far back as 1896, 80-to 90-year-old photos of prayer meetings as well as contemporary ones," said Lessler. "Photos of Japanese burial sites throughout Malaysia are also featured." The graveyard has been widely written about in local and foreign media articles.

would worsen if no remedial action is taken soon. However, the residents' plight is now being championed by Gerakan Selangor youth chief Ben Liew and Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Welfare Society for Handicapped Citizens president Lim Kok Onn. "We urge MPAJ to act without further delay and, meanwhile, we will erect a signboard to alert the public of the danger," said Liew. Said Lim: "The soil here is too soft, the erosion could worsen and this situation must not be allowed to deteriorate." When contacted, a MPAJ officer said they would look into the matter.

Family in fear over seven break-in bids

MOST families would be traumatised if their house was broken into even once. But for one family in Taman Bukit Teratai, the experience is like a recurring nightmare. Burglars have attempted to break into their house seven times this year! "Due to previous attempts to burglarise our house since last year, we installed security alarms," said the resident who only wanted to be known as Michelle. Speaking on behalf of her family she said:"Each time there was a break-in attempt, the alarm would be triggered and that would

scare them off but the burglars kept coming back. Once, we heard them trying to saw through something." The latest incident occurred yesterday morning. "My siblings were getting ready for school when the alarm was triggered." So far, the family has been fortunate not to have lost anything or having to confront the burglars face-toface. "We suspect the same people have been responsible for the break-in attempts and they are getting

bolder," Michelle said, adding it was puzzling only her family's house has been targeted. "All my neighbours do not seem to have been victimised." The family has filed several police reports on the attempted break-ins. "We used to contribute to the neighbourhood's monthly security fees but stopped doing so because we felt their services were unreliable as there was no security checkpoint into our area." At Press time, Ampang Jaya police could not be reached for comment.

How unlettered are we?

I READ with disbelief and concern a report in a local daily yesterday that some students chosen for National Service training last year were found to be illiterate. For those who missed it, The New Straits Times, in one of its cover stories. revealed more than 1,000 out of 11,000 students chosen to undergo the training from last year’s third batch could not read, write and count. Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad, was also quoted in the report as saying the findings had prompted the department, with the help of the Education Ministry, to formulate and introduce a module to help affected trainees improve their 3M (reading, writing and arithmetic) skills. The report also revealed that after attending only 30 credit hours of the module, the trainees could read and write. It didn’t say whether they could count though. I found the findings, by my

personal standards and expectations of our education system, quite disturbing. Never mind that it was based on only one batch of National Service trainees. What about other batches then, I wondered. Personally, the high percentage — about 10 per cent of selected trainees — is an alarming statistic for me to chew over, simply because the selection of trainees is random (National Service participants are selected through a computerised process from a national database of 18-yearold Malaysians). So much so, I would expect that some red flags have already been raised by the authorities, especially the Education Ministry, that there is a serious issue at hand. The fact is that, at random, we had picked, with our eyes closed, more than 1,000 illiterates for one batch of National Service trainees. One can only wonder whether the real statistics of the literacy rate of our youths and children paint

I Don’tCare With Muzli Mohd Zin

ON TUESDAY a grimmer picture. I am now quite curious, although a part of me is trying hard to soften my sudden anxiety following the report the findings were incidental in nature. In Malaysia, by law, primary education is compulsory. The establishment of the Education sub-sector of National Key Result Areas u n d e r t h e G ove r n m e nt Transformation Programme last year to widen access to quality and affordable education for our younger generation reflects the government’s continuing efforts to raise the standard of our education system. While the report on the findings by the department did not provide detailed

backgrounds of the ‘illiterate’ trainees, one damning fact is that some of them were the products of our education system. Some could have dropped out, while some failed to get into the system, due to poverty or inaccessibility to formal education. It was more disheartening to know that despite undergoing compulsory primary education, some of our children could not read, write and count, as revealed by the findings. It also goes to show there are enough illiterate students to populate more than 300 primary schools in the country. Some could suffer from learning disabilities like dys-

GETTING TOUGH: File photo of National Service trainees at a camp. It is hard to imagine some of them may be illiterate

lexia which some ‘trained’ teachers, as highlighted in my previous column, “I’m dyslexic, not stupid” (refer to the online version at www.mmail. com.my), failed to identify and address. It is also damning to assume that some of them failed to master the basic skills after sitting through the system and a series of national examinations at both primary and

secondary levels. Whatever the reasons for their inability to read, write and count at the prime age of 18, it goes to show that we have our work cut out for us to address the problem. Have we failed or are we just starting to improve? Muzli Mohd Zin receives brickbats at muleez@ gmail.com.

Unhappy with security Three break-ins in one night, officer says thieves were 'tipped'

ON Aug 26, a family woke up to find their condominium unit on the 14th floor of Villa Lagenda in Selayang broken into. Upon inspection, NANTHA KUMAR found out the thieves had climbed in through the kitchen window after standing on the compressor of his air-conditioning unit. NANTHA, 27, lives there with his parents and sister. He says the thieves escaped with RM3,800 in cash, jewellery worth RM10,000 and two handphones valued at RM300. "I alerted security and a guard came and inspected my unit. He told me to lodge a police report," he says. NANTHA went to the management office to ask to view the close-circuit television (CCTV) footage. He says he had to wait for some time because there was no one in the office, and when someone finally arrived, he was rude and uncooperative. "This is ridiculous. The residents are paying the management more than RM200 for security and maintenance every month, yet we are provided with such poor service. "The security personnel change every few months. How can the guards know who are residents and outsiders when they are not here long enough? "And how can the residents trust the guards if they see new faces all the time?"

TWO friends are disappointed because they could not donate blood after the organisers decided to cancel the event at the eleventh hour. EUGENE LEE, 40, of Petaling Jaya, and a friend spent 90 minutes travelling from Petaling Jaya to KL Sentral by LRT and walking to Palm Court Condominium in Brickfields after receiving an invitation by

● VILLA LAGENDA building manager M. Maniam has invited NANTHA to view the CCTV footage as the management keeps a 30-day record, although he says they were unable to detect any suspicious behaviour themselves. He says the fees paid to the management are not just for security but for utility maintenance, gardening and cleaning, and other services. Maniam says the changes to security are made to provide the best service possible for the tenants. On the rude manage-

ment staff, he says he will look into the matter as he is unaware of it. The condominium's se-

curity manager, who only wanted to be identified as Sathiya, says there were three break-ins that night.

He says they were all due to occupants neglecting to lock their grilles. "We've informed the ten-

SMS to give blood at a mobile blood donation drive on Aug 14. They sought confirmation of the event, on Aug 9 and Aug 14, but when they arrived at the condominium, they were told by security there was no such event that day. When LEE and his friend insisted that there was, they were led into an empty hall where

they were told by residents the blood donation drive had been postponed to a later date. LEE learned that notices had been put up but had already been taken down. However, the National Blood Bank website had not been updated with the information, he says. He sent a complaint letter to the blood bank the next day. When he did not receive

a reply after a week, he sought Hotline's help for clarification. ● NATIONAL BLOOD BANK spokesman Dr Norris Naim says there has been a miscommunication problem. "The mobile blood donation drive is handled by the blood donor recruitment unit while the website is under the

IT department," he says. "Normally, when an event is postponed, the recruitment unit will issue a memo to the IT department to update the website. "Unfortunately, when this particular event was postponed, the memo from the recruitment unit did not reach the IT department. "To prevent this from hap-

ants that they must lock their grilles, and even distributed eight padlocks and keys to them during the festive season," he says. Sathiya says DNS Security Sdn Bhd has been providing security for Villa Lagenda for the past three months and there have been no break-ins before or after Aug 26. He suspects the thieves may have been informed by certain tenants of the security arrangements. They not only cut the barbed wire and bent a number of spiked railings on the back wall of the condominium but also managed to avoid being filmed on any of the 24 CCTV cameras. The spikes and barbed wire have since been repaired. "We have five guards per shift who patrol every one hour," he says. Sathiya says he has since made several proposals to the management to improve security at the condominium, including the installation of 20 more CCTVs and additional barbed wire around the back wall. He has also requested an additional guard per shift, decreasing time between patrols to 45 minutes, and equipping them with nightsticks. When contacted, NANTHA says he is happy with the management's reply.

pening again and as part of our effort to ensure there is continuous improvement, the IT department will upgrade its system to allow the recruitment unit to update the website themselves. This upgrade should be in effect after the Hari Raya holidays." When contacted, LEE says he accepts the apology.

Males shamelessly occupy 'women only' coach as KTM staff close an eye IT is meant to be for women only. Yet, men are the ones spotted in this special coach provided by KTM Komuter. RACHAEL, who commutes from Rawang to KL Sentral everyday, says when the train reaches the Sungai Buloh station, many men would shamelessly board the Pink Coach meant for women only. "Some women tell the men it is a 'women only' coach but they don't seem to care," she says. RACHAEL says the KTM staff at the station do not appear to advise the men to use the other coaches. "They should be making sure rules are not violated. "The purpose of having a 'women-only' coach is to ensure they do not experience any form of harassment. "I'm shocked they brazenly allow men to enter the Pink Coach. The women need to be protected." RACHAEL says on one occasion, she heard a woman passenger asking a KTM worker why he was allowing men into the coach. "The worker replied it would not make any difference. He said that even if he tried to stop the men, they would not listen to him." ● KERETAPI Tanah Melayu Berhad corporate com-

Taken for a ride (Sept 12) ● THE authorities must come down hard on taxi drivers who flout the rules. SPAD's Che Hasni has called on commuters to report to the SPAD hotline if they encounter errant public transport drivers but, sometimes, it is not so easy to record such details as the vehicle's number plates, company name, full name of driver, etc, on the spur of the moment. SPAD needs to go down to the ground more often, to pose as passengers and to catch the drivers on the spot. The drivers must be hit where it hurts most — in their pockets — by being given hefty fines and suspension for reasonably long periods. — Victim ● FOR too long, those without transport have fallen victims to taxi drivers who try and rip off their passengers at every chance they can get. Some cabbies even abuse and threaten their passengers who are told to "take it or leave it". The bus companies can do a great deal to help. If they can ensure that there are regular bus services (manned by friendly bus drivers), then the people will not hesitate to take the bus. When the taxi drivers begin to lose their income, hopefully, that's when they will start to behave. — Another student Dream vacation dashed (Sept 9) ● AS customers, we want to know where our money goes. "It will take some time for the passengers to understand the need for such a service. Thus, we will strive to continuously educate our male passengers and step up our efforts to make sure the idea works."

Siti Badariah also says the men need to cooperate by not using the Pink Coach. "We take note of RACHAEL's complaint and will improve the services of our personnel at the stations and platforms."

Wireless to beat phone cable thefts

SIMON KARUNAGARAM is disappointed with the poor phone service in his parents' house in Kampar, Perak. "The line has not been functioning properly since June. My mother said the phone would ring if there's a call but she cannot hear the person at the other end," he says. SIMON lodged a complaint with Telekom Malaysia on June 15. A week later, his sister told him there had been no response, so he called TM again. "To my surprise, TM told me the problem was due to a cable being stolen. They said they cannot do anything and that they've closed the case. "How can they close a case if the matter is unresolved?"

Worse, he says, his father is being charged monthly despite the service disruption. Believing the problem is not because of a missing cable as the phone could still ring, SIMON, who works in Kuala Lumpur, lodged a fresh complaint. "TM them told me they are replacing cable phones in the area with wireless ones, to overcome the cable theft problem." He says he was told to a contact technician but when he made a call, he found out it was a wrong number. A week later, his sister went to the TM office in Tapah to make another complaint. A technician finally went to the house several days

later and changed the phone to a wireless one with a new number. "Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a line with the new phone. Even when there is one, the line is not clear," says SIMON. He found out that the neighbours' phones, which have also been replaced, have a device installed by TM outside their houses for better coverage. "Why didn't TM do the same thing for my parents' house?" he asks. After contacting TM again, a technician went to the house in early August but left after an inspection and promised to return the next day. At the time of contacting

Hotline, the technician has not returned. ● A SPOKESMAN for Telekom Malaysia Berhad says: "After investigating the case, we found the problem stemmed from a faulty cable outside the house. Our technicians replaced the cable on Aug 16. "SIMON has confirmed his TM phone line is working normally. "We would like to explain that the area surrounding the premises has frequently been a target of cable thieves. Hence, we have no choice but to install TM CDMA (wireless) services." When contacted, SIMON confirm his parents' phone is working properly.

KL: Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020

Detailed policies needed

BACK in 1975, I used to tell tourists that Kuala Lumpur never had a master plan. The city grew like the tentacles of an octopus as roads and buildings were constructed according to the contours of the land. In the same year, a national travel association was founded and today, it has 2,800 corporate members engaged in the travel, tours and transport of tourists. Many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and trade associations have helped to overcome many challenges over the years and this national

travel association is no exception. However, it can be more effective and the surest way is to institutionalise its activities. Their highly successful bi-annual consumer travel fair is proof of this. It can start with setting up a detailed policy on education and training for its members, as the overwhelming majority of travel industry personnel are not formally trained. The only exception is tourist guides, and training courses for them have been conducted for close to half a century. It

remained the only licensed profession in the travel industry, since 1975. As many tourists have become more independent and not travelling in groups, there is an urgent need to train the large number of van and taxi drivers as driver-guides. A detailed policy on road transport for tourists is equally urgent. With numerous problems remaining unresolved, it had been more of a talk shop whenever the association engaged with the authorities in this area. An effective policy is beyond

the usual vision and mission statements. It should categorically state the association’s position on many matters such as licensing, although it is under the purview of the authorities. However, the authorities are staffed by officers who come and go and may not fully comprehend the quirks of a particular industry. As such, they rely on internal source and feedback from the few contacts they have with the industry. On the other hand, a policy can be vetted by hundreds of stakeholders and strengthened

pj: Spoilt for choice of Jalur Gemilang (Sept 12)

Show your loyalty, fly the flag

NOT many people and car owners are fixing the miniature Jalur Gemilang on their cars in conjunction with the Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations. Why is this so? There are, of course, many ways of showing one’s patriotism towards the nation either through action or in words. Or even better, by doing both. Hoisting the national flag at one’s home or putting the mini flag on the roof or windscreen of one’s car are ways Malaysians can adopt to show their patriotism. I remember during the nineties, when this campaign was a success, most motorists showed their love for the country by displaying the miniature flags during the entire month of Merdeka. During that time, most of the cars and motorcycles on the roads had at least one Jalur Gemilang stuck on them. It was good to see all these vehicles on the roads and highways with the mini flags. That was the time when government agencies and corporate bodies distributed the miniature flags to the public for free. Nowadays, you rarely see this anymore. Does this mean the reason not

PATRIOTIC GESTURE: Fixing the national flag on your car is one way of showing your love for the country

many people are flying the flags is because they do not receive them for free? Is the mini flag so expensive the people are not able to buy them? Why be a freeloader? Last time I checked, it cost less than RM5 a flag at various

hypermarkets. Dear Malaysians, we will be celebrating Malaysia Day on Friday. It is really sad to see motorists are not so eager to fly our flag anymore. But I really hope those in the Klang Valley and other States

will take up this challenge by affixing at least one flag on their vehicles. Selamat Menyambut Hari Merdeka dan Hari Malaysia 2011. Mohd Faizal Abdullah

over time through continuous reviews. It is common practice for the private sector to air their grouses or ask questions in meetings and conferences with the public sector. However, no satisfactory answers were given on the spot or remain unresolved for many of these issues. It is time for both the public and private sectors to gather the problems in advance and deliver proposed solutions during such functions, thereby raising productivity by several notches. A detailed policy should state

clearly the position taken by an NGO or trade association with supporting data. It will be up to the authorities to accept, amend or reject with explanation. Without a set policy, an NGO or trade association may be busy but running in circles without a reference point to move forward. Meanwhile, many stakeholders are eagerly waiting for the 20-year master plan to be announced this month by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD). YS Chan

KL: Scams and tricksters

Gullible Malaysians continue to fall victim IT IS a paradox that despite so much being highlighted in the media on how not to be duped, many are still taken in by sweet promises. Scams, no matter in whatever form, must be put to an end. This con game has brought victims nothing but trouble. And foreigners, knowing how gullible Malaysians can be, are the culprits behind most of the reported scam cases. However, can we solely blame them for the problem when some of the fault lies with us, too? Many victims are just greedy and want something for nothing. The solution is simple really. Let's start by not being greedy. Don't be gullible and don't be an easy prey. Believe me, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Everything in this world has a price and you have to pay for it, in one way or another. Stretching it a bit, maybe someday, we might even have to pay for the fresh air we breathe. Instead of hoping to become rich quick, let us earn our money by working hard for it. So how do you recognise a scam and avoid being conned? Simple, if the offer is too good to be true, then it usually is. Nobody wants to give you some-

thing for nothing. Mind you, the people that run these scams are clever and know how to persuade you to part with your cash. However, conmen have the same things in common. They will: ● catch you unawares, by phone, email, post or, sometimes, in person, ● sound polite, well-spoken and want you to think they're your friend, ● have slick, professional leaflets and letters, ● be persistent and persuasive, ● rush you into making a decision, and ● ask you to send money BEFORE you receive their tempting offer or prize. How to spot a scam? They usually offer you: ● a prize (even though you never entered any contest), and ● an exclusive entry to a scheme that is guaranteed to make you huge returns. There are hundreds of examples, so the best way to protect yourself is to be sceptical of any offer that comes your way. If you have been scammed, report it immedately to your local police station. KL: Down2Earth: Lessons not learnt (Sept 8)

Glaring absence of safety precautions ALTHOUGH the Prime Minister has instructed that no one point fingers and engage in the blame game for which Malaysian politicians are notoriously famous for, there were precautions that

were ignored. It was tragedy that Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, the 39-year-old Bernama TV cameraman, was killed in Mogadishu, Somalia, while on duty.

For the family, it is so sad to lose a son. And for the children to lose their father. All the money given to the parents and family members can never adequately balance

out their loss. And to think that the writer had issued all these guidelines for war zone journalists years ago. I had this creeping fear the aid mission to Somalia and all

the media coverage was to gain attention for the organisers. Even some emails circulating seem to suggest the same. But no matter what the actual motive behind the mission to

Somalia, the absence of safety precautions is glaring. Bitter lesson learnt indeed. May God rest his soul. Sonal

Obama: Tax the rich US president proposes hikes to pay for 'American Jobs Act'

US President Barack Obama signaled yesterday he would pay for his US$447 billion (RM1.4 trillion) jobs plan by raising taxes on the rich and energy corporations and demanded that Congress pass it right away. The president, seeking to reset his under-pressure presidency and slice away at 9.1 per cent unemployment, sent the bill to lawmakers and warned Republicans not to slow it down with "political games" at a time of great national urgency. But Obama, by deciding to finance the bill by ending tax breaks for oil and gas firms and individuals earning over US$200,000, set up a new showdown with his political foes — who have already rejected such methods in the past. The president, who has promised to fight for the Bill in every corner of the country, gathered firefighters and teachers who he said would be helped by the Bill yesterday in the White House Rose Garden. "This is a Bill that will put people back to work all across the country. This is a Bill that will help our economy in a

moment of national crisis," Obama said. "This is a Bill that Congress needs to pass. No games. No politics. No delays." The White House later unveiled Obama's plans for paying for the legislation in a way that will not run up the already bloated deficit. Budget Director Jack Lew said the plan would remove itemized tax deductions and some exemptions for people earning over US$200,000 a year and families which take in US$250,000. Obama would also tax carried interest earned by hedge fund managers as ordinary income rather than as capital gains and take away special preferences enjoyed by oil and gas firms. He would also close tax loopholes enjoyed by corporate jet owners. In all, the package would raise US$467 billion, Lew said. The congressional supercommittee mandated to find US$1.5 trillion in deficit reductions by November could accept Obama's suggestions or recommend a different path to pay for the jobs Bill, Lew said. Republican sources, however, said that Obama's proposals

proved he was still wedded to raising taxes, which they say would slow job creation by small businesses. "It would be fair to say this tax increase on job creators is the kind of proposal both parties have opposed in the past," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. "We remain eager to work together on ways to support

job growth, but this proposal doesn't appear to have been offered in that bipartisan spirit." Republicans in the House of Representatives, who have been a roadblock for Obama since their mid-term election triumph last year, however have hinted they will accept some parts of the plan, though not the full Bill as sent to them. Obama, who has record

low ratings for his economic management, complained that some Republicans would prefer to make jobs a weapon in the 2012 elections rather than back the "American Jobs Act". "We have been seeing that too much around here ... That is OK when things are going well ... It is not OK at a time of great urgency and need across the country," Obama said. Prince Harry seals record currency trade deal Britain's Prince Harry helped break the world record for the biggest currency trade as he took the call to complete the deal yesterday. The 26-year-old army helicopter pilot looked a little bemused as he chatted down the line to a trader from Barclays, using trading floor jargon. Robert Sully, a broker on the foreign exchange desk who handed the telephone to the prince, described his performance as "brilliant". "We told Harry to say '28 your choice', which means you can buy or sell," he said. The planned trade went through and the BGC trader described it as the biggest forward foreign exchange

Gunmen kill 22 bus passengers in west Iraq Gunmen killed 22 passengers on a bus coming from Syria late yesterday in a desert region of Iraq's western province of Anbar, police general Haider Rzayj said. "Some armed men stopped the bus coming from Syria yesterday around 9.30pm, they made the 22 passengers get off the bus and killed them with automatic weapons," he said. "All the victims are men and their bloodied bodies were stretched out on the ground," he added. The incident took place about 300km west of Baghdad, in a sector under the control of the Iraqi army. Since the US-led invasion in 2003, the mainly Sunni province of Anbar has been a stronghold of al-Qaeda, whose members have killed

numerous Iraqis and foreigners travelling the roads to Jordan and Syria. While tribal militias have cracked down on insurgents since 2007, they have not completely eliminated them. Earlier yesterday, in a separate incident, gunmen shot dead a Sunni imam hostile to al-Qaeda in the troubled city of Baquba, 60 kilometres northeast of Baghdad, a local security official said. The gunmen, using weapons fitted with silencers, killed 63-year-old Ahmed Mahmud al-Jabalawi, the imam of the Al-Shuhada mosque, yesterday morning," said the official. The imam, who was known for his outspoken criticism of al-Qaeda, was killed on his way to the mosque for morn-

ing prayers, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. In the main northern city of Mosul, a car bomb wounded six people, including five policemen, a police officer said. And in another attack, a vehicle packed with explosives wounded two people in Iskandariyah just south of Baghdad, another police officer said. Both sources declined to be identified. Violence is down across Iraq from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common. A total of 239 people were killed in violence in the country in August, according to official figures. A total of 1,860 Iraqis have been killed since the beginning of the year. — AFP

In line with his pledge to sell the jobs plan in every corner of America, Obama will tout the legislation today in the vital electoral swing on Ohio and then follow up in another key battleground, North Carolina, tomorrow. Arabs spearhead Statehood bid amid US apprehension ARAB States will push for a fullyfledged Palestinian State at the United Nations next week, the Qatari prime minister said yesterday, despite a US threat to block such a move. Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, in Cairo for talks with officials at an Arab foreign ministers' meeting on the Palestinian UN bid, said the European Union has still not decided on a united position yet. The Palestinians decided to seek United Nations recognition of Statehood after years of negotiations with Israel failed to deliver the independent State they want to establish in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem — areas occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War.

The Palestinians currently hold UN "observer" status. Full member status would require approval in the Security Council, where Israel's ally the United States had said it would veto any such resolution. "The Arabs had agreed to apply to the United Nations for a full-fledged Palestinian State with its capital East Jerusalem," Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, chairman of the follow-up committee on the Palestinian UN bid, said at the start of the meeting. "At this meeting, we will look into the steps that has been taken to go to the United Nations," he said before a closed session began. Diplomats have said it is not clear

what the Palestinians will do when the UN General Assembly opens on Sept 19. They could seek lower status as a "non-member State," which would require a simple majority of the 193-nation Assembly. Ashton, speaking after meeting Egypt's foreign minister Mohamed Kamel Amr in Cairo, said: "There is no resolution on the table yet, so there is no position. "What we're very clear about from the European Union is that the way forward is negotiations," she said. "We want to see a just and fair settlement, we want to see the people of Palestine and the people of Israel living side by side in peace and security, and I will do everything I can to help achieve that." — Reuters

Woman undercover 24-year-old guided Nato bombs to Gaddafi targets

THE Nato bombing campaign which fatally weakened Muammar Gaddafi's rule had a secret asset: a 24-year-old Libyan woman who spent months spying on military facilities and passing on the details to the alliance. The woman, operating under the codename Nomidia, used elaborate methods to evade capture — constantly changing her location, using multiple mobile telephone SIM cards and hiding her activities from all but the closest members of her family. Her biggest protection against arrest by Gaddafi's security forces though was her gender: as a young woman in Libya's conservative Muslim society, they did not suspect her. "I was not on the radar," the woman, an engineer, said in an interview in the lobby of a Tripoli hotel, two weeks on from a rebellion that broke Gaddafi's control over the Libyan capital after 42 years in power. "They were concentrating more on the guys and it was almost impossible to think that a girl was doing all of this," she said. "(She was) a very important source, and very trusted," said Osama Layas, a forensic pathologist who was a member of the network. When Nomidia began her undercover role five months ago, Gaddafi and his security forces had a firm grip on the city and stifled any information which could be useful to his opponents. Testosterone drop helps men do dad-duty MEN experience a drop in testosterone after the birth of their children, a phenomenon that may help them meet the challenges of caring for their offspring, said a study released yesterday. Testosterone is a hormone that fuels male sexuality, aggression and physical robustness, said the research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. With less testosterone coursing through their veins, men are more likely to adopt fatherly roles and help nurture their children, a particular need among humans who have much longer dependent childhoods than other mammals. Of those who started the study single and became fathers by the end of it, the men with the highest initial testosterone levels were more likely to have become dads. — AFP

chiffon scarf draped over her head, Nomidia said she felt compelled to act after the brutal way in which Gaddafi's forces put down the first stirrings of revolt in cities around the country. "I could not help it when I saw what Gaddafi did in Benghazi first, in Misrata, in Zawiyah, in Tripoli, the Western Mountains," she said. She began by calling Libya al-Ahrar, an anti-Gaddafi television station based in Doha, Qatar. With little real information leaking out of Tripoli, producers at the station put her voice on air — under the name Nomidia — with accounts of what was happening in the city. Soon, she was dialling in with details of military forces which the channel wanted to keep off the air to avoid alerting Gaddafi's government. Instead, they began passing on the information to Nato, via officials with the rebel government, the National Transitional Council, said Lina, at the time a producer at the station who was Nomidia's principal point of contact. The information Nomidia supplied was "basically, where they were storing their arms, their tanks," said Lina, who asked to be identified only by her first name. "She did an amazing job," Lina said. "That was pretty brave. I know a lot of guys who wouldn't do it in Tripoli at the time. So, I'm very proud of her." — Reuters

'I want to die with you' Rare interview reveals Jacqueline Kennedy's thoughts on politicos

IN THE early days of the Cuban missile crisis, President John F. Kennedy telephoned his wife, Jacqueline, at their weekend house in Virginia. From his voice, she would say later, she could tell something was wrong. ''Why don't you come back to Washington?'' he asked, without explanation. ''From then on, it seemed there was no waking or sleeping,'' Jacqueline recalls in an oral history to be released in the US tomorrow, 47 years after the interviews were conducted. When she learnt the Soviets were installing missiles in Cuba aimed at US cities, she begged her husband not to send her away, reports The New York Times. ''If anything happens, we're all going to stay right here with

you,'' she says she told him in October 1962. ''I just want to be with you, and I want to die with you, and the children do, too — than live without you.'' The seven-part interview conducted in early 1964 — one of only three Jacqueline gave after her husband's assassination — is being published as a book, Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life With John F. Kennedy, and an audio recording. The widow, then 34, speaks with Arthur Schlesinger Jr, the historian and Kennedy aide, about her husband's presidency, their marriage and her role in his political life. They do not discuss his death. The 8½ hours of interviews had been kept private at Jacqueline's request, who never spoke pub-

Nine lives and counting Alleycats to hold 43rd anniversary concert for three straight days IT all started when a friend suggested they look for a name to match the new band’s identity. The friend suggested “Alleycats” when he saw a lot of stray cats roaming around the back alley. The group’s previous name was Super Jets, and when they changed their name, they also decided to don the afro hairstyle that has remained the band’s trademark until today. Some four decades later, after having become one of the most respected group of musicians in the country, the band, has good news in the offing. Alleycats will be having another concert at Istana Budaya. Going on stage three

band’s 43rd anniversary, Alleycats will perform its best songs and hits for three days beginning Thursday. “We are really looking forward to this concert. We hope it will be another memorable event. I am 61 now and I think I have celebrated and enjoyed every moment of my life as a singer and performer. That’s why we decided it would be just about us this time around,” Alleycats main vocalist Datuk David Arumugam said. Alleycats is now left with six members, after the passing of David’s brother, Datuk Loganathan Arumugam, who succumbed to lung cancer four

years ago. Loganathan was the band’s other vocalist. David said the concert at Istana Budaya could be seen as a tribute to Loganathan. “I still need to get used to performing without Loga on my side. All I can say is, it is not an easy process, not only for me but for all of us. However, it will never be an excuse for me to stop singing. He would want me to continue... “We will have a special segment just for Loga in the concert which will be slotted in the second part of the show. His daughter Priyadashini will join me on stage singing her late father’s famous songs,” David said. Berjuta Batu and Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi are among of the famous songs which will be sung by Priyadashini. The first part of the concert will kick off with the 1Malaysia concept that would include multi-lingual songs. Supporting the band would be traditional sounds supplied by the Istana Budaya Malaysia Traditional Orchestra under the direction of Eddie Marzuki. The third part of the concert will be dedicated for fans as they will perform their greatest evergreen hits from the collection of their 27 albums. David will also be joined by Glen, the band’s newest member. They have practised more than 30 songs for the performances. As for the total number of songs that would be showcased, David said that has not been decided yet. The only plan is to sing as many songs as they can to fit the two-hour concert. “At my age, I definitely need help with my performance. It is quite hard for me to memorise every single song. There are just too many of them! So, in order not to ruin the concert with me fumbling with the lyrics, I will perform with the lyrics in my hand.” Part of the proceeds from the concert will be going to charity. David said they will contribute RM5 from each ticket to Majlis Kanser Nasional Malaysia. Tickets, priced at RM65, RM85, RM125, RM165, RM205, RM245, RM305 up to RM450, are selling fast. Taiwanese songbirds to fly in

THEY are known as the four beauties of Taiwan. Those who know why they have been given this moniker would scramble to catch a glimpse of them. The four songbirds — Winnie Hsin, Michelle Pan, Shunza and Chyi Yu – will be in Malaysia next month for a one-night only concert, Songbirds of Taiwan Live in Genting. While the organiser had promised a fun show ahead, the four beauties themselves assured it would be a memorable night, especially for fans of Hokkien songs, notably oldies. “There are definitely crossovers between the four

of us, and fans can expect a unique performance. We will be including various songs from the TV series, English songs and other well-known hits from us,” said Yu, one of the fantastic four who will be gracing the stage. Yu, who is in the midst of preparing her new English album said she has been extremely busy organising for the concert and the release of the album. “The concert is something different as we’re working as a new team. I am very excited and hopefully it’ll be a great one that the audience will remember for a long time.” Pan added that fans can

expect “a fresh feeling” when the four go on stage together, and with all the costume changes, that would certainly add colour to the evening. “Fans can expect to see 12 different sets of costumes, hopefully,” she said. As for the repertoire, the four are still deciding on the final rundown. The song list has yet to be finalised and the quartet is determining the appropriate duets and such. “It could be easier with Malaysian fans, as people listen to English, Cantonese, Mandarin and even Hokkien songs. I think the Malaysian crowd is very

warm. I have no stress at all, and I am very much looking forward to meeting you all soon.” • Tickets to the Songbirds of Taiwan Live in Genting 2011, which will be held at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands on Oct 15 at 8pm are priced at RM450, RM320, RM230, RM160 and RM100. Macabre novella of four gothic tales By HAMZAH NAZARI hamzah@mmail.com.my TITLE: Full Dark, No Stars AUTHOR: Stepen King PUBLISHER: Pocket Books RATINGS: 7/10 CONTEMPORARY American horror-writer Stephen King's latest offering is a collection of four short stories. The opening tale 1922 takes the form of a long letter written by a farmer in the 1920s who suffers the consequences of sacrificing one love for another. Though the tale itself is predictable, the author still manages to shock and awe with his trademark attention to detail, painting a horrifying picture in the mind of the reader. Big Driver, told in the third person and set in modern rural America, tells the story of a female mystery author who becomes the victim of a gruesome attack.

Not shiny enough TITLE: Shine – Fulfil your potential AUTHOR: Jenny Ungless PUBLISHER: Advantage Quest RATING: 5/10

It is perhaps the best story featured in this compilation with intermittent stomachchurning moments coupled with the main character's struggle to maintain her sanity. Fair Extension, the shortest of the four stories, is set in the author's element — the supernatural. Though it falls slightly short in its delivery, the covert undertone makes it worth the read. The final story, A Good Marriage, is set in presentday America and is rife with references to modern life and activities. A suburban housewife's life is torn apart following a unimaginable revelation forcing her to face the harsh realisation that we never truly know someone, not even ourselves. In short, this compilation is a recommended read for horror enthusiasts looking for a snack.

IF you are just about to start working or are looking forward to kick-starting your career, Shine — Fulfil Your Potential is a good book to read. While the 34 chapters in the book consist of the usual mix of self-help combined with self-marketing techniques, Ungless has the ability to make readers stop, think and absorb points that most of us already know. Each chapter deals with a key strength or skill to work on and develop and gives you a chance to justify ideas that are in your mind. Working with three sections — finding out what you want, managing your career and managing

yourself, the book also covers areas like saying “no” and dealing with difficult people — an important aspect in everyday interaction. This is a handy guide to kick-start your ideas and move a step or two up your career ladder, if that is what you’re looking for. However, if you're looking for earth-shaking advice, it may fall short of your expectations. — By

THE BIG REVEAL: Models showing what's in store for you — Pix by SAMSUL SAID

Smarter, smoother and sleeker The new members of the Blackberry 7 family shows superb form and functionality well as the usual 3.5mm earphone slot that provides handling ease when propping the 9900 up. With a well-positioned lock button to boot, it is obvious RIM had thought out the finer details well to turn the classic Bold into a more functional phone. The beautiful touchscreen at 640 x 480 pixels at about 2.8 inches is capacitive and highly responsive. With a great QWERTY keyboard, and abundant spacing as opposed to the 9700 and the 9780, and a standard 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities — the 9900 is definitely a real step in the evolution of the Bold series — and one of the smartest smartphones of the year for it’s petite packaging of a powerhouse. Expected to be retailed at the price of RM2,188 (with varying pricetags on telco bundles) the 9900 will be available in Malaysia on Thursday. Other specs for the device are a powerful 1.2Ghz processor, and 768MB RAM to boot. Meanwhile, the Torch 9810 comes with a large 3.2inch touch display and slide-out keyboard for faster typing. The 9860, is a visual beauty with its all-touch design offering a larger 3.7inch touchscreen display. The 9810 is the successor of the current Torch 9800. It comes with a 1.2Ghz processor, 768MB RAM, 8GB Internal Storage (supports expansion storage up to 32GB via microSD), and a 5MP camera.

The 9860 is BlackBerry’s first full touchscreen phone with a 1.2Ghz processor, 768MB RAM, 4GB Internal Storage (supports expansion storage up to 32GB via microSD), and like other Blackberry members, a 5MP camera with LED flash. Both phones feature 720p HD video recording, completing the new additions running on RIM's next generation of the BlackBerry 7 operating system. What’s so hot about OS 7 is that enhancements include a faster BlackBerry browser the company has claimed to be 40% faster than the previous versions. And a quick run-through proves there is definitely a marked difference in performance, so you know it’s not just a boast. RIM promised a HTML 5-optimised browser which it delivered ensuring better gaming and video experiences on the Web, as well as better zooming and panning ability for smoother web-browsing.

During a recent preview of RIM’s new roll-outs, the company also announced a surprise addition to the Blackberry Curve 9360 — OS 7’s most affordable model of the lot. Do we hear the hurrahs from those who want to jump on the Blackberry Messaging (BBM) service bandwagon? With a faster processor than its predecessor, it may lack a touchscreen and relies on the more conventional trackpad but it is extremely responsive as promised and still visuallypleasing despite its small size and low resolution (2.44-inch, 480 x 360). The Curve 9350 is powered by a 800Mhz Processor, 512MB RAM, 512MB Internal Storage (supports expansion storage up to 32GB via microSD), and a 5MP camera with LED flash. Simply put, the Curve 9360 — OS 7 looks pretty and works well. After spending over an hour getting acquainted with all four models, and fiddling

with the incorporated features there is only one dilemma over RIM’s latest line — and that is, which model to settle for as an upgrade to what you’re using.

THE Blackberry range of OS 7 smartphones vary in prices and more information is available on http://www. blackberry.com.my

SUDOKU

HOW TO PLAY Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

YESTERDAY'S SOLUTION

BLACKBERRY has consistently been in a class of its own, despite new-fangled devices released by competitors in the smartphone market, particularly "the other fruit in the market" such as Apple. But there's no doubt about it — In the area of corporate smartphones, Blackberry reigns supreme. Still, detractors will say that the brand has not been paving the way for further innovations in its new releases. Features included have been relatively standard fare and can hardly be regarded as pushing the envelope. Then came the range of four new smartphones in the Blackberry 7 family. The Bold 9000 opened the floodgates of Research In Motion's (RIM) dare to makeover its range. The company was the first to throw it all in, while others were still dreaming and planning. With liquid graphics and augmented reality, it was a complete offering of a techie dream come true! In the new range of Blackberry 7 smartphones released by RIM, having a go at the four new members of the family was a suspenseful moment. Did RIM pick up its stride in delivering what was definitely much-needed in the sea of mediocre but overhyped products rolling out of assembly lines of various manufacturers? The Bold 9900 was a standout and invited most time spent on it. At 130g, it weighs enough to mean business and yet remained sleek enough to slide in pockets without making you appear "excited", although it's understandable if you do get turned on by it. Measuring 115 x 66 x 10.5mm and the slimmest Blackberry yet, it’s a throwback to the 9000, without the actual feel of the bulk. There is 8GB of internal storage and an option to increase to 32GB. Navigation is made easy with four buttons, three clustered together with the top and bottom for volume and media pause, as well as a convenience key. The other side is reserved for ports, including a micro USB charging and syncing port, as

PKNS captain Mohd Fadhil Hashim demands nothing but victory when they entertain Sime Darby in the Malaysia Cup today. He believes the players just need to maintain their performance to get the three points and keep their hopes of qualifying into the knockout stage alive. "We have shown improvement in our last two matches and that is the positive we take." PKNS have played well in their opening two matches only to lose by a single goal. They lost 2-1 to Negri Sembilan at home and lost 3-2 to FA Cup champions Terengganu away. However, there is no embarrassment in both the losses as their opponents were Super Leagues sides. PKNS will only play in the Super League

next year after winning the Premier League comfortably. "Sime Darby cannot be taken lightly despite them being at the receiving end of a 5-0 drubbing to Negri Sembilan over the weekend. "We struggled to beat them in both our league matches previously. Just like us, Sime Darby will be out to collect their first points," added the skipper. PKNS had beaten Sime Darby 1-0 in both their previous meetings in the recently concluded Premier League. Unlike PKNS, who decided against loaning players, Sime Darby have boosted their Malaysia Cup campaign by loaning three. The trio are Yusaini Hafiz Chee Saad (Armed Forces), Premnath Chandran (Penang) and Thinagaran Santhanathaven (USM).

Cup gets school boost

SCHO OLCHILDREN in Selangor can look forward to see former and current football stars in action during the Sultan of Selangor Cup at Shah Alam Stadium on Oct 1. The organisers handed out 40,000 tickets to Selangor education director Abdullah Md Yusof for the competition. The allocation is double the usual ticket handout to schools. "This is not a gimmick to fill up the stadium. People

love watching Selangor and Singapore take the field even during the days our neighbours used to compete in Malaysian football," said organising chairman Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar. This year's edition is not only the 10th but it would also commemorate Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's 10th year as head of State. It was announced that there will be 10 sky divers carrying

the flags of Malaysia, Selangor, Singapore and the royal flag. Also 10 lucky draw prizes will be given out to ticket buyers. Besides football, fans can also look forward to a performance by local rock star Amy Search. Tickets for the Cup are priced at RM10 and are sold at Quality Hotel, Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, Hard Rock Cafe KL and Shah Alam Stadium on match day.

nothing but rocky. They lost 1-0 to T-Team in their opening match but beat Police 2-0 last weekend. "We are out to win the match. But it will not be easy. Despite Selangor's shaky start, they are still to be

feared," said Razip. "The boys are playing with confidence and the two earlier wins can only motivate them to win again." Last month, attendances for training were poor as KL players were not paid their

wages. However, all outstanding wages have been paid and Razip has a set of committed players once again. "They can play with a clear mind now. I can see the players enjoying their football," added Razip.

PETALING JAYA: Obituary

Goodbye Seremban heroes

Nation mourns former hockey and football internationals By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my

A SENSE of sadness envelops the town of Seremban as the country mourns the loss of two sporting legends, Peter Van Huizen and M. Joseph. Peter, or fondly known as Uncle Peter, passed away yesterday while Joseph passed away on Sunday. Peter was 79 while Joseph was 77. Both Peter and Joseph were former hockey and football internationals. Former hockey international Raymond Tio remembers Peter as a "caring uncle". "He was very concerned when it came to family matters," said Raymond. "Uncle Peter was always around to help us. He was like a father to us." Raymond added the family members would often refer to Peter for guidance and was a source of inspiration to many in the family to take up hockey. Among those in the family who went on to represent the country include brother Lawrence, nephew Stephen and Raymond himself. His son Adrian, meanwhile, played for the State team. "Although he was a goalkeeper, his passion in the sport rubbed off on us. I remember playing with him for local club Rangers when I was still a school boy. We've got a huge age gap but it didn't stop us from playing together. The whole family

PETER: Voted world's best goalkeeper in 1956

is really sad to lose him. He's been a role model to us all." Born in Seremban in 1932, Peter took up the sport at the age of 20. He went on to represent Malaysia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. He was voted the world's best goalkeeper in 1956. He also played football for the country at the 1959 Seap Games in Bangkok. Peter, however, could not join his teammates for the 1960 Olympics in Rome as he was cash strapped. Athletes then had to pay for their own air fare when travelling abroad — a sacrifice which is alien to today's breed of sportsmen. Peter leaves behind wife Angeline and sons Adrian and Terrence. Joseph, or better known as One-Eyed M. Joe, played football for Malaya from 1947 to 1953. In hockey, he also played at the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games.

JOSEPH: First Malaysian to obtain a German coaching certificate

Up on ret irement, he started coaching in the early 1980s. Joseph was the first Malaysian to obtain a coaching certificate from the German FA. Among those coached under Joseph were former national coach B. Satianathan and Selangor coach K. Devan. "It's a shame that Negri Sembilan lost two of its favourite boys. I remember clearly how Joseph and Peter were always on the field, looking out for new talent and always guiding the youngsters," said Satianathan. "These two gentlemen were gems. It is difficult to find such characters these days." Family and friends are expected to throng the Church of Visitation along Jalan Yum Tuan to pay their respects to Joseph (10am) and Peter (2pm) during the service tomorrow before the national heroes are laid to rest.

AUSTRALIA wing Rod Davies may still be having nightmares about Samoa's Alesana Tuilagi. During Samoa's stunning 32-23 upset win over the Australians in Sydney in July, Davies was smashed several times by Tuilagi, who weighs at 117kg. It was then left to Matt Giteau to take his turn in the firing line, as the flyhalf tried in vain to stop Tuilagi from scoring a blistering 80-metre try. "He's a monster and he's got a bit of speed," Samoa scrumhalf Kahn Fotuali'i told the tournament's website ahead of the Pacific Islanders' World Cup opener against Namibia in Rotorua tomorrow. "He's quite brainy, too, and rugby-smart. You just give him the ball and let him do his thing. I think Rod Davies will be having nightmares after the

UPON arriving in Whangarei, Tonga hooker Aleki Lutui (pic) gave a small clue to the surprise about to be revealed at the team announcement later that day. "When you have a game first, all the other teams analyse you," he said when asked about Canada, who will make their debut against Tonga tomorrow. "So it’s good to mix things up and surprise them." But it would have been difficult to predict the 11 changes that has reshaped the team, the most made by a Tonga team in World Cup history. Of the starting lineup against host New Zealand last Friday, just four players remain to play Canada. However, those four have switched positions, four others are headed for the reserves' bench, while the other seven of the initial team have been omitted. Head coach Isitolo Maka said the player carousel was always part of a masterplan.

"We’re looking at making sure that everyone is fit and ready because we still have two more games left and the turn around was too short from last Friday to Wednesday. The move reveals a confidence in the depth of the squad," said Maka. "All those guys who were on the bench last week are all starting on Wednesday, some of the guys who were started last Friday are on the bench, so we’re trying to rotate last week and this week. I have faith in every single one of them." Captain, and Isitolo's brother, Finau Maka, who will move from position six to seven in the back row, said it might be a challenge to continue from where they left off in the second-half against New Zealand. "Guys who didn’t make the 22 against the All Blacks are starting this week, so it is a challenge to get them up to the same page as where we left off last Friday," he said.

Maka said he is over the achilles problem which plagued him during the match against New Zealand, and is ready for what his coach expects to be a hotly contested match with Canada. "We have a lot of respect for them, they beat the USA and you can see the Americans did well against Ireland," said the elder Maka. "There are no easy games so we expect a very, very hard game."

Lewes cited for 'striking' Ledesma CURRENT WORLD RANKINGS TOP 20 bad tackle: Lawes (left) collides with Ledesma

ENGLAND'S Courtney Lawes has been cited for allegedly striking Mario Ledesma with his knee during last Saturday's 13-9 win over Argentina in Dunedin. The 22-year-old must appear before a disciplinary hearing in Auckland today. "We will provide any information required and attend as requested," said England head coach Martin Johnson. Lawes is alleged to have breached law 10.4(a), which concerns "punching or striking (with the knee)". The Northampton forward was cited by match disciplinary commissioner Murray Whyte for his challenge on Ledesma near the end of the first-half of England's World Cup Pool B win.

1) NEW ZEALAND Sanctions for such a breach can range from three weeks to several months, though punishments are usually handed down in terms of matches at World Cups. The hearing will be chaired by Terry Willis of Australia. England's next match is against Georgia in Dunedin on Sunday and they are preparing for the match at their base in Queenstown. Lawes was also involved in a controversial tackle on centre Gonzalo Tiesi. He hit the Argentina centre after he had kicked the ball, causing knee ligament damage that ruled the player out of the rest of the tournament. However, he has not been cited for that incident.

LONG-HITTING Spaniard Alvaro Quiros has pulled out of this week's Seve Trophy because of a wrist injury, organisers said this morning. Quiros will be replaced by Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin in the Continental Europe side to face Britain and Ireland in the biennial event at St Nom La Breteche which

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard praised Sam Stosur's "outstanding" US Open victory, saying it would encourage the next generation to pick up a racquet — AFP

Jacquelin replaces injured Quiros starts on Friday. Jacquelin, 37, was next in line for a place in the team through the Race to Dubai qualifying list. It will be his fourth appearance in the competition. "It is desperately disappointing news for Alvaro," Europe captain Jean Van de Velde told the tour's website (www.euro-

peantour.com). "He wanted to play and to be able to honour the memory of Seve. "He is a wonderful player and a great character. Having said that, Raphael is an outstanding player as he proved in three previous Seve Trophies when he collected eight-anda-half points." Britain and Ireland have

won the trophy five times and Europe once since the event was launched by Spanish great Seve Ballesteros, who died earlier this year after a long battle with brain cancer. Mere pittance Williams escapes with small fine for outburst

SERENA WILLIAMS escaped with a fine of just US$2,000 (RM6,100) this morning for her US Open final rant, when she launched an angry tirade against the chair umpire in yesterday's title match. The American, who was under a Grand Slam probation for another outburst at the tournament in 2009, could have faced a ban if officials had deemed Sunday's tirade in the final, that she lost to Samantha Stosur, to be a "major offence". Williams was handed a code violation by Greek umpire Eva Asderaki after the first game of the second set against Stosur, when she had been docked a point for "intentional hindrance" when she screamed 'C'mon' before Stosur had a chance to put her racquet on the ball in a rally. The incident came on a break point, giving Stosur a break of serve. Williams berated Asderaki after the game and continued to complain bitterly during the subsequent changeover. "US Open Tournament Referee Brian Earley has fined Serena Williams $2,000 following the code violation issued for verbal abuse during the women’s singles final," the US Tennis Association said in a statement. "This fine is consistent with similar offenses at Grand Slam events," said the USTA adding that the money would go to the Grand Slam Development fund. Williams earned US$1.4 million at the US Open. He r r u n n e r- u p p r i z e money was US$900,000 and she made a US$500,000 bonus for finishing first in the standings of the US Open Series of hardcourt tune-up

events in the weeks before the final Grand Slam of the season. The USTA also said Grand Slam committee director Bill Babcock determined "Williams' conduct, while verbaly abusive, does not rise to the level of a major offence

under the Grand Slam Code of Conduct." "Aren't you the one who screwed me over last time?" Williams, who was eventually defeated 6-2, 6-3, bellowed at Asderaki from the court, in an apparent reference to a similar incident in

Doha two years ago. "Don't even look at me," she shouted up at Asderaki as she sat in her chair during the next changeover. "If I see you in the corridor don't even walk past me... a code violation for expressing my opinion, we're in America... you're unattractive inside..." The scene recalled her profanity laced tirade toward a line judge in a 2009 semifinal against eventual champion Kim Clijsters. That incident brought her an immediate US$10,000 fine from the US Open and later a US$82,500 fine from the Grand Slam committee, along with the probationary period during which another major offence could result in a ban from the next US Open and a doubling of her fine. Williams insisted after the match that she didn't intend to put Stosur off her stride. "I just yelled, 'Come on'. It was a great shot. I hit it right in the sweet spot. It was the only good shot I hit. I was like, 'Woo Hoo'." As for what she said to Asderaki, Williams claimed she couldn't even remember it. "I don't even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there ... I guess I'll see it on YouTube." The US$2,000 fine wasn't even the largest issued so far at the Open. Me n ' s d o u b l e s p l a y ers Mike Bryan was fined US$10,000 for an "off court" incident after he and brother Bob Bryan lost in the first round. Taiwan's Tseng holed the winning putt on the parfive 18th hole to edge South Korea's Amy Yang who failed to convert a six-foot birdie try just moments earlier. "I almost cried because today because in the middle of the round, I felt like, 'Oh, I'm

going to lose today.' Because I didn't feel any excitement and I wasn't making any birdies," Tseng said. Like the last three holes, I made some birdies, so that was very important for me." — Agencies

MONZA: MOTORSPORT/ FORMULA 1

McLaren will fight on MCLAREN chief Martin Whitmarsh (pic) vowed to continue fighting to win Grands Prix and said his team had not yet given up hope of stopping Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull from winning this year's world titles. Whitmarsh, who conceded that Vettel was in imperious form after the 24-year-old German defending drivers' champion cruised to victory in Sunday's Italian Grand Prix, said he and his team had set their sights on winning the Singapore race later this month. Even though it would take a bizarre sequence of events for either of his British drivers 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton or 2009 champion Jenson Button to rekindle their title hopes, Whitmarsh said nobody at McLaren had given up hope. He said he retained hopes of winning in Singapore and, at least, stopping Vettel from retaining his crown there with another sumptuous triumph to add to the 25th of his career Sunday. Whitmarsh said: "There is a good chance of winning it — the race in Singapore. Winning Grands Prix is what we are here to do and we will be trying pretty hard in Singapore. You can be pretty sure of that." Asked if he thought the championship was virtually over, he said: "No, not yet. But we think we want to try and win some races. "It is definitely possible, but they (Red Bull Racing) are doing a good job and Sebastian is not making enough mistakes for my liking at the moment, but we will see." Looking back on the Monza weekend where Button finished second and Hamilton fourth, with Ferrari's twotime champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso sandwiched between them in third place to the delight of the home fans, Whitmarsh said there were plenty "of positives" to

be taken from it. He said: "We had the pace in the car, but we had poor starts and that is frustrating. If the race was one lap longer then we would have two cars on the podium. "We scored more points than any other team and we set fastest and second fastest laps of the race with the two guys, so we are disappointed with not winning. "But we have got six races left that we are able to win and we will keep pushing on so we can." While McLaren departed the Autodromo Nazionale determined to keep on fighting, the Red Bull team went home triumphant and equally set on attacking at each race left this season. Vettel's victory at Monza gave him a 112-point advantage ahead of Button and a chance, in Singapore, to clinch his second champion's crown. Te am ch i e f C h r ist i an Horner said: "Our approach to Singapore will be exactly the same as every grand prix this year — we will go there to try and win. We came close last year and it would be great to win that race and the championship will take care of itself at the end of the day. "I think that our philosophy has been to attack each weekend and not cruise and collect points — and I think that is the right philosophy. We continue to learn very valuable lessons for next year so our approach will be exactly the same." — AFP

Leverkusen can stun Chelsea, says former Blues star

BARCELONA

Ibra to miss Barca brush AC MILAN striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (pic) picked up a muscle problem in training this morning and will not be fit to face his former club Barcelona in tomorrow's Champions League Group H game, the Serie A club said. "AC Milan announce that during today's training Zlatan Ibrahimovic felt pain in the adductor region," Milan said in a statement on their website (www.acmilan.com). "A clinical evaluation revealed a muscle injury that will prevent him joining the trip to Barcelona," the Italian champions added. The volatile Swede's return to the Nou Camp had been hotly anticipated after he fell out with Barca coach "Pep" Guardiola and was offloaded to Milan at the end of the 2009-10 season. Milan's Brazil forward Robinho, a former Real Madrid player, is still suffering from a groin problem and was not included in the squad for the match at Nou Camp (2.45am), Milan said in a separate statement. — Reuters

LONDON

B AY E R L E V E R K U S E N midfielder Michael Ballack (pic) believes they have what it takes to cause an upset when they take on Chelsea in their opening Group E match at Stamford Bridge tomorrow (2.45am). The German club return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2004-2005 competition and Ballack is keen to get off to a winning start against his former team. "We have a bit of international experience, thanks to the Europa League last season, but it's completely

different to be playing in the Champions League," he told Uefa's website. "I know from experience that it's a different level. In the opening match in London, where we can go without any pressure, we may spring a surprise." Ballack, 34, said he was looking forward to a return to Stamford Bridge after leaving Chelsea for Leverkusen in the summer of last year. "I was happy. The draw could hardly have been any better. I am looking forward to travelling there again,

to playing there. This will certainly be a special match for me." Leverkusen will be high on confidence ahead of the clash following their 4-1 Bundesliga win over Augsburg over the weekend. Meanwhile, Leverkusen manager Robin Dutt said Ballack is not guaranteed a place in his starting lineup. Former Germany skipper Ballack was restored to the starting 11 for last Friday's clash against Augsburg after sitting on the bench for

Leverkusen's last two league games, playing together with captain Simon Rolfes despite Dutt saying before the season that both would not be seen on the pitch together. "I was happy with Ballack and he was active against Augsburg. But I still don't know whether he will play tomorrow in Chelsea," said Dutt. "Many players will be fit for the match and I am not going to reveal my team now. The Chelsea game is going to be totally different."

Mertesacker to plot Dortmund downfall

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger believes new signing Per Mertesacker's familiarity with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund will come in useful when the two sides meet in their opening Group F match tomorrow (2.45am). Dortmund were regular opponents for centreback Mertesacker during his time with Werder Bremen, and the 26-year-old is no stranger to the formidable atmosphere Arsenal will face at Signal Iduna Park. Wenger believes this wealth of experience will help the Gunners settle in the early stages in Dortmund, as they look to get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start. "Mertesacker knows the stadium well and German football well," said Wenger. "He is strong and he communicates." Wenger believes Arsenal's Champions League qualifier against Udinese had a detrimental impact on his side's Premier League form. But thinks victory over Dortmund could provide a timely confidence boost.

"We were disturbed by two things. The players who were not with us (Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri) and the two Udinese games had an impact on our games against Liverpool and Manchester United," he said. "We have a big game against a big side. It's a massive game

and a chance to show what we can do. It's a first big test." The Frenchman knows momentum will be everything if the Gunners are to continue their revival as they prepare to face Dortmund. Arsenal registered a nervous 1-0 win over Swansea at Emirates Stadium last Saturday

as they secured a first Premier League victory of what has been a new campaign. Wenger now wants all thoughts of the 8-2 humiliation at United before the international break to be put out of the players' minds as they focus on the targets in front of them.

"In our job, momentum is vital. We just want to play to win," he said. "When you look back when we travelled to Udinese everyone expected us to win the game and we did, we want the same against Dortmund. "The confidence is back now. We just had not won yet in the league and that had played a big part in our heads." Arsenal will have both Gervinho and Alex Song available for the Dortmund clash as their three-match suspensions were only for domestic games. New signings Mikel Arteta and Mertesacker impressed in what was a tough clash against a gallant Swansea side. Yossi Benayoun, on loan from Chelsea, came on as a substitute and should feature in this match while Brazil fullback Andre Santos and South Korea captain Park Chu-Young could both make their debuts. Wenger is in no doubt the fresh faces will help lift a squad which is severely stretched as they aim to secure qualification for the lucrative group stages at the expense of domestic results.

ARSENAL must do without Aaron Ramsey and injuryprone Tomas Rosicky as they embark on their Champions League campaign away to Germany's Borussia Dortmund tomorrow. Wales international Ramsey limped out of training with an ankle complaint and Czech veteran Rosicky has a knee injury. Thomas Vermaelen and Jack

Wilshere are other regulars missing but new signings Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Yossi Benayoun, Andre Santos and Park Chu-young are all available. Ramsey has emerged at the start of this season as a first choice pick in the Gunners midfield following the sale of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, and Wenger has been pleased with his progress.

"I think Aaron Ramsey has been influential in our team since the start of the season, but it is a good opportunity to show that we have now a big squad, and that we can cope with it," said Arsene Wenger to a Press conference. However, the Gunners boss is now looking for others to stake their claim for a firstteam place, in the absence of the midfielder who he believes

has become more influential at the Emirates Stadium. "We have three midfielders out with Diaby, Wilshere and Ramsey. But we still have a strong midfield tomorrow." Wenger will be missing from the touchline for what is the first of a two-game ban for the Arsenal manager in the competition. The Frenchman was penalised for communicating with the Gunners bench while

serving a one-match ban during last month's 1-0 win over Udinese. Wenger has admitted that he has no idea what the rules are regarding touchline bans. "I don't understand anymore what are the rules, what you can do and you can't do," added the Arsenal boss. "So I think I'll go to the stands straight away when I arrive tonight." — Agencies

'Special One' gets technological REAL MADRID boss Jose Mourinho will watch his side's opening Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb from his hotel room and will communicate with his coaching staff via phone and iPad. Last season, Mourinho was handed a five-match touchline ban by Uefa, which was later reduced to three games, for suggesting referees favoured arch rivals Barcelona after Pepe was sent-off in a clash the Catalans won 2-0. The 48year-old watched the secondleg encounter against Barca from his hotel room and it seems he will employ the same tactic in the Croatian capital, due to his ban prohibiting him access to the tunnel or technical area before or during the game. Mourinho's assistant Aitor Karanka will take charge of meeting the Press.

Bastian reckoned to Barca midfield BAYERN MUNICH coach Jupp Heynckes believes that Bastian Schweinsteiger is on the same level as Barcelona trio Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. Heynckes' men head to Spain for a tricky Champions League test against Villarreal and the 66-year-old tactician is adamant that Schweinsteiger will need to be at his best for the match. "For these games, we need the Schweinsteiger from the 2010 season. If he is in form, he plays in a league with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets," Heynckes said. The German international has made an impressive start to the new campaign and his performance in Bayern's 7-0 win over Freiburg at the weekend has earned plaudits from the German media.

Silva bullet Mancini believes midfielder one of the best in the business

ROBERTO MANCINI hailed David Silva as one of the best players in the world and is grateful that Spain's loss is Manchester City's gain. The Italian is baffled that Barcelona and Real Madrid overlooked the gifted midfielder, signed from Valencia in 2009, who has played a dominant role in the club's 100 per cent start to the season. "Silva is a top, top player. I don't know why he didn't go to Barca or Real Madrid because he's Spanish but we are lucky because he's here. If he had gone to Barca two years ago, everyone would say he's one of the best players in the world — and he is one of the best players in the world. "He's different from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo because they are strikers and score a lot of goals but I think he's the same as Xavi and Andres Iniesta." City will make their debut in the Champions League against Napoli at home on Thursday (2.45am) and Mancini will hope to reap the dividends of

MILAN

a rotation policy that is one of the benefits of his large and talented squad. Mancini admits the players may not be happy to kick their heels on the bench — for example striker Edin Dzeko did not play a minute of City's 3-0 win over Wigan last Saturday despite scoring four goals in the previous match. "They may not be happy — that's impossible because every player wants to play always, but I'm the manager and I need to take this decision. "Now we have a difficult match coming up, we play every three days and these players like Dzeko, Aleksandar Kolarov, Stefan Savic and Samir Nasri have played two games in four days and they need to recover. "We have a long year and I need all the players to be available as much as possible and sometimes it's better that they rest. We have the first game in the Champions League for the club, it will be an exciting night but we need to have a focus and make sure

we beat them." Mancini accepts that Serie A is behind the Premier League in terms of quality but insists City should not think they can stroll to victory against Napoli, who were from the pot of fourth seeds in last month's Champions League draw but have a pedigree in the competition going back to the days when Diego Maradona ruled the roost in Naples. "Serie A is behind the Premier League but in the Champions League it's different. For Napoli it will be the first time in the European Cup after many years, after Maradona, and for them, like us, the first night will be very exciting. "They are a very good team and the Champions League is not like the Premier League, we only have six games and you need to win always if you want to go in the second stage. "It's strange because our group is a very hard group and all the teams can finish top or in fourth position."

ON TOP OF THE WORLD: Silva is one of the best players

City of course, have the Maradona connection too now — Sergio "Kun" Aguero, who has already hit six goals this season, is the Argentina

legend's son-in-law. "I don't know if Maradona will support Naples or City — he will have mixed feelings!" exclaimed Mancini.

Cole fires Hazard warning to rivals JOE COLE will be back in familiar territory with a return to the Champions League as Lille take on Russians CSKA Moscow in Group B. And Cole, on loan from Liverpool, reckons new teammate Eden Hazard is in the same bracket as Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. Belgian Hazard, 20, turned last weekend's match in St Etienne with two goals of Messi-like class. "Eden reminds me of Messi in that he can unlock teams with frightening technical skill," Cole said.

AC MILAN manager Massimiliano Allegri hinted inform striker Antonio Cassano will not feature from the start in their opening Champions League match away against champions Barcelona at Nou Camp tomorrow (2.45am). Cassano impressed for Italy's national side earlier this month and helped Milan to a 2-2 draw against Lazio last weekend in Serie A by scoring once and setting up another, but Allegri feels Alexandre Pato is the better option in Spain. "Cassano put in a superb performance in the game against Lazio, but Pato is the favourite to start against Barca because of his specific characteristics," Allegri told La Repubblica. The tactician was full of respect for the Catalans but stressed that Milan have plenty of quality as well. "We have a lot of respect for Barca. They play some of the best football, but we shouldn't forget that we have great players too. We have to

be very alert at the back and up front. We can't afford to be careless," he said. Midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, meanwhile, said his side will travel to Nou Camp to dazzle and intimidate. He insists Barca, who drew 2-2 with Real Sociedad in Primera Liga, and have lost attacker Alexis Sanchez to a thigh injury for eight weeks, are not untouchable. And Boateng feels stopping Josep "Pep" Guardiola's playmakers is the key. "Barca unbeatable? If I believed that then I wouldn't be playing football. Every team can be beaten," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "We have to be compact against Barca because we are away from home and so we have to defend well. Up front we have excellent strikers, and so we will score against them sooner or later. "If we block Xavi and Andres Iniesta then it will be difficult for them to score. I think the game will end in a 1-1 draw."

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle and Blackburn have all been linked with him but the Blues have always been leading the chase. due training compensation. "It is a massive step for Islam and for Scottish football," his agent Rui Alves told Sky Sports. "For him, it is the beginning of a major

adventure. He will have to work, work and work and raise his own level. "Playing for a top club like Chelsea, where the major word in the squad is quality, will oblige him to show his own quality and deliver his best and convince the staff that he is more than just a major prospect." Alves admits there was little doubt he would join Chelsea after they impressed him so much. "The first impression was extraordinary, it is a feeling that the whole club are behind him, they will support him on a daily basis and give him total trust and make him believe," he said.

COLOURFUL midfielder Joey Barton was handed the captain's armband by QPR manager Neil Warnock on his debut against his former club Newcastle United here this morning but was unable to deliver them victory in a 0-0 draw. The 29-year-old Englishman — capped once for his country — signed for QPR on a free transfer last month after falling out with the Newcastle management and board. However, while he along with gifted Moroccan Adel Taraabt produced sparkling performances in a match that the hosts largely dominated, they were unable to find the finishing touch to give them the three points but it at least ended a run of three home defeats. The draw also allowed Newcastle to maintain their unbeaten start to the season — it sees them go to fourth in the table — which is their best since the 1995-96 season when they ended up finishing second. QPR had some great chances

to put their opponents away with another of Warnock's astute transfer window signings Shaun Wright-Phillips going closest with a chip on 39 minutes but Steven Taylor did brilliantly to hook the ball away off the line. Indeed Taylor had to do that earlier in the half, that time as he nicked the ball off Alejandro Faurlin when he was sizing up knocking the ball home from close range. However, other missed chances from Jay Bothroyd and veteran midfielder Shaun Derry, whose two missed headers illustrated why he hasn't found the net in the past five years, could have been costly against a more ambitious team. Barton, though he was booed throughout the match by the Newcastle fans when he touched the ball, was rewarded at the end as the away fans applauded him off the pitch and he saluted them back. — AFP

He confirmed that Chelsea fended off interest from around Europ e to land Feruz. "It was not just every club in the Premiership but also most big clubs in Europe who were tracking him. He is the one serious player in Scotland at the moment." Feruz has been described as the ''Scottish Wayne Rooney'' but Alves insists those comparisons are not accurate. "He is a totally different player than Rooney. He is explosive with an amazing strength and good strike. Due to his speed, he can also play on both wings. But like Rooney, Islam doesn't cheat, you won't see him crying on

the floor begging for cards or arguing with referees. I believe he will raise his level fast." Alves did, however, confirm that Feruz will continue to pledge his international allegiance to Scotland and will not forget what Celtic did for him. "He is looking forward to starting his career with Chelsea, but he would love to thank Celtic for all they did for him and his parents. He is Scottish and will one day score goals for Scotland." Feruz moved to Glasgow in 2001 after escaping wartorn Somalia with his family, and having been there for five years.

Barton fails to spark

deal," said Redknapp. "We are looking to make him a good offer. The transfer window being shut now makes my job easier because he has to just get on with playing." Redknapp is also anticipating talks regarding an improved contract for Modric, who is already tied to a long-term deal at Spurs. Modric started in Spurs' 2-0 away win over Wolves last Saturday and did a reasonably good job to assist the team.

TV show exposes drugs bombshell CHANNEL 4’s Dispatches programme named striker Garry O’Connor as having been banned after testing positive for cocaine while playing at Birmingham two years ago. It also revealed that hundreds of random doping tests have been missed over a three-year period. The report claimed 240 tests had to be abandoned between April 2007 and August 2010 because players were missing when doping officials turned up to screen them. The documentary also claimed players were positive for cocaine when they were at Everton, Nottingham Forest and Tranmere and featured a former Chelsea staff criticising the use of intravenous iron treatments.

Cahill calls for calm from fans

EVERTON fans marched in protest at the weekend at what they see as a lack of progress in recent years due to financial restrictions. But Tim Cahill reckons there is still quality in the squad, and even though the players themselves would like to see new signings, they understand that is not always possible. "Everybody wants to see new faces and change, but sometimes it can't be done," he said. "We are balancing the books and we want to be a club that's going to be around for a very long time. "Hopefully the fans who did protest can understand that this is a great football club and we can all pull together in the right direction."

Spurs to offer Modric better wages TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp expects club chairman Daniel Levy to sit down with Luka Modric and make the midfielder a "good offer" over a new contract. Modric, 25, was keen to leave Spurs during the last transfer window after being the subject of bids from Chelsea, but Levy repeatedly insisted the Croatia international was not for sale. "Luka will just get on with it. The chairman will sit down and discuss his contract and make a

Redknapp also confirmed attacker Giovani dos Santos rejected the opportunity to join Udinese as he was holding out for a move to Sevilla. Meanwhile, Redknapp insists Heurelho Gomes has not been relegated to third choice goalkeeper, but admits he could leave in January. Gomes has endured a mixed career at Spurs since his 2008 arrival from PSV Eindhoven and was linked with a return to the Dutch club at the end of last season.

Redknapp has previously kept faith with Gomes and the 30-year-old Brazilian started the first game of the season against Hearts in the Europa League. However, Redknapp has used summer signing Brad Friedel in the Premier League and Gomes has not even been on the bench for the last two games. "I've not bombed out Gomes but we decided Carlo Cudicini would be better on the bench," said Redknapp.

ARGENTINA legend Diego Maradona (pic) says he has never watched the national side since he was dismissed as coach last year, and has no desire to return to manage them. The 50-year-old was sacked after they lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarterfinals of last year’s World Cup in South Africa, but in May, was appointed coach of Dubai’s Al-Wasl of the UAE. "Since I left, I have never seen the Argentina team… and I think I will not see them again," he said. "I am looking at doing something great at Al Wasl, far from those ill-tempered people." Since losing his job, Maradona has several times hit out at Julio Grondona, head of the Argentine federation since 1979, dubbing him "old" and "corrupt".

Iniesta insists there is no bad blood between him and van Bommel BARCELONA’S Andres Iniesta insists he holds no grudge against Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel as the two European giants prepare for tomorrow’s Champions League clash at Nou Camp. The former teammates met in last year’s World Cup final with van Bommel earning criticism for his physical approach to the game, which was won by Iniesta’s injurytime goal. “I do not fear van Bommel, I had no problems with him at Barca. I have nothing against him,” he told reporters. It will be the first time that the two have come head-tohead on the pitch since the final yet Iniesta maintains there will be no problems. “There could have been some kind of actions but I don’t think it will be repeated again,” said Iniesta. “I like to think we all act in good faith, defending our own interests. There were hard tackles but it ended very well for me, for us.” The Spain international also reacted to news that another former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out of the game through injury. “It’s a shame that Ibra will not play, you always want to see the great players feature.

He was eager to return for this game but Milan are too big to rely on one person,” he explained. Iniesta was also keen to pay his respects to Milan, but insists his side should have the edge over the Serie A champions. “I have great respect for Milan as a club and the players they possess. They are always a major team. I feel that we are better than Milan but they can win. We will work very hard to achieve what we want to,” he concluded. Barcelona will be looking to get off to the best possible start in the new Champions League campaign after defeating Manchester United 3-1 in last season’s final at Wembley. Meanwhile, Barca boss Josep “Pep” Guardiola was adamant to say his side are not the favourites. “When we won (the Champions League) in Rome, I said the same thing I will say now: we are not favourites because no one has been able to win two titles in a row in the last 20 years,” Guardiola said. “AC Milan have done it and no one has been able to repeat it during all this time, and this shows how difficult this competition is.”

However, Guardiola insisted that retaining the Champions League crown would be of utmost importance for his side. “In these three years we won two Champions League crowns and we reached the semifinals once. We competed very well and now we want to do the same and go as far as possible.”

The Spanish coach played down Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad and stressed his men are aware of the hard task ahead. “We have to quickly forget the previous matches, whether you win them or lose them, though it is always better to come off a victory,” Guardiola noted.

“I have very few things to reproach about regarding what happened on Saturday. The players are grown men and they know Milan are coming, a great team backed up by their history. We always compete knowing we can draw or lose and that is why we have won so many titles in the last three years.” — Agencies

AC MILAN’S Thiago Silva believes tomorrow’s clash against Barcelona in the Champions League will showcase the best two teams in European football. The Scudetto holders struggled to a 2-2 home draw against Lazio on Friday in their opening game of the Italian season but the Brazil centreback remains confident ahead of the match against the Catalan club. “We are working hard, it will be a difficult game but we’ll see,” the 27year-old told Rai Sport. “We are not facing certain defeat. Every week we know we will face a great team and we must pay attention to the

specific characteristics of our opponents.” In addition to acknowledging his side would face difficulties against Barcelona, Silva added that both sides were among the top teams in Europe, which would add to the allure of the game. “For me it’s like playing a derby between the two best sides in Europe. Both will be strong but we will try to win,” he said. Silva joined Milan from Fluminense in December 2008 for €10m (RM41.4m) and has since established himself as a fundamental part of the team. — Agencies
