Perhilitan’s special squad in nationwide animal park checks By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

THE Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has set up a roving task force to check on the condition of zoos and more importantly, the animals. Its director-general Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin, in a statement to The Malay Mail, said the Zoological Park Task Force’s concern was to monitor the condi-

tion of these places, with special attention being paid to the welfare of animals being kept or exhibited. “We also want to create an awareness on compliance to the new regulation on zoo operations supervision under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 which is in its final stages,” he said. “The main purpose of the

Act is to monitor how zoos in Malaysia are being managed and operated.” The flying squad has started operations around the country. To date, they have conducted audits on 17 zoological parks in Peninsular Malaysia. The outcome of the audits will be used as a reference by a committee entrusted with scrutinising applica-

tions for zoo management. Abd Rasid said under the Wildlife Conservation Act (Act 716), a permit was required by any party intending to operate a zoo, circus and wildlife exhibitions. “However, a permit will not be issued to any party that fails to adhere to any of the stipulated regulations.” • Continued on pg2

A'Famosa tiger case now with AG's Chambers

MORE than a year after a controversial YouTube video of a tiger being allegedly abused at the A'Famosa Resort in Malacca first stirred controversy, the case is now finally on the verge of making progress. The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), in charge of investigating the case, has been instructed to send the results of their year-long investigation over to the Attorney-General's Chambers. Its director-general, Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin, in a statement to The Malay Mail said the department had, on May 26 last year, launched investigation into the matter after being alerted to the video's existence by members of the public as well as the Wildlife Crime Hotline, an

The investigation, he said, was time-consuming due to several factors. "We faced difficulty in obtaining cooperation from several parties involved in the case. In addition, the analysis done on the tiger's blood sample also took a long time." Their findings were eventu-

ally compiled and sent to the legal adviser for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment last Thursday. "As a result of the following discussions, we have been advised to send it to the AG's Chambers for further scrutiny before the next step can be taken by Perhilitan," said Abd Rasid. In May last year, The Malay Mail had highlighted the appearance of a YouTube video of a tiger, allegedly being abused by its handler at the A'Famosa Resort in Malacca. It purportedly showed a chained tiger being used for photo-taking sessions with members of the public. Commenters on the video had claimed that the tiger appeared drugged, due to its placid state.

The two-minute video caused an uproar among animal activists as well as members of the public. It prompted 50 demonstrators to hold a 30-minute demonstration outside the resort's main entrance and also saw the creation of a Facebook page titled "Stop Animal Abuse at A'Famosa". In response, the resort denied the allegations, stating that the tiger was merely in a lethargic state. It also stated that the assistant trainer, shown in the video handling the animal, had his employment terminated due to unsatisfactory overall performance. Perhilitan has urged people to alert them on possible animal abuse cases by contacting their hotline at 03-90866800.

One in 10 pets has online profile

FOREIGNERS are still running stalls in Petaling Street, despite assurances by City Hall that they would be operated only by Malaysians. Checks by The Malay Mail at the popular tourist spot showed at least 70 per cent of stalls were handled and assisted by foreigners, mostly Bangladeshis, Myanmar and Indonesians. Santish Khan, 23, from Bangladesh, said he had been working for a sunglasses stall for the past four years. "The enforcement officers come here frequently and foreigners like me have to run

TEN per cent of British pets have their own social networking profile, according to a study published yesterday. According to the UK's largest pet insurance provider, millions of Britons created Facebook, Twitter or YouTube profiles for their animals, in a trend described as "petworking," The (London) Daily Telegraph reported. The boom also sparked a rise in websites dedicated solely to petworking.

"WE can only take action against the business operator and not their employees," says KL City Hall deputy director-general (services) Datuk Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz concerning the prevalence of foreign workers manning stalls at Petaling Street. "The RM50 fine is usually paid by the stall owners but they continue to flout the law. Action on immigrants come under the Immigration De-

and hide when they do. After they leave, we come back and resume our work," he said. "I am fed up of this 'cat and mouse' game and I want to find work elsewhere." Ah Meng, 24, from Myanmar, works for a handbag stall and said he also ran and hid whenever enforcement officers arrived. "When the situation is clear, my Malaysian boss will let me know," he said, adding his employer also helped him renew his passport. "I am happy with my pay as I earn up to RM50 a day. I also work on weekends."

Aji, 24, also from Myanmar, said he earns up to RM2,000 a month as a helper at a shoe stall. "I hope I can continue doing this for a long time as I don't think I can find a job that pays better," he said. A local trader who has been operating a clothes and handbag stall here for 36 years, said she had stopped hiring foreigners after being fined. "After being caught for having Myanmar employees, I had to let them all go," she said. In 2009, City Hall set June

RM50 fine may be too low partment or Home Ministry." When asked whether the fine should be higher to serve as a deterrent, Amin said: "Yes, that's a good suggestion. Perhaps the value of the fine should be increased to RM2,000." He said if a stall owner was not present at his or her stall three times in a row during checks by City Hall officers, a show cause letter would be issued.

"After that, the trading licence of the owner can be revoked." He said from January to June this year, City Hall carried out five operations at Petaling Street and 34 compounds were issued, six licences revoked and seven seizures made. Immigration: They just keep coming back THE Immigration Department constantly conducts joint operations with KL City Hall and the National Registration Department to curb the practice of foreign stall helpers working in Petaling Street. Kuala Lumpur Immigration enforcement division deputy chief Mohamed Yusof Khan Mohamed Hassan said their latest operation was last month. "We conducted a raid there on June 16 and detained eight immigrants, including a Bangladeshi, six Myanmar as well as an Indonesian woman. We caught 123 immigrants in the area last year. "We are aware despite our actions, foreigners still operate stalls in Petaling Street. "Those without identification papers are detained for 14 days and charged under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amendment 2002) for which they can be jailed no less than six months and three strokes of the rotan." He said employers could face a RM5,000 fine while the workers themselves could be fined RM200. "However, our hands are tied in cases of immigrants with documents issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. We usually have to let them go."

Two Vietnamese die in spat over house lights By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

AN argument over switching off a room's lights lit a conflict that resulted in the death of two Vietnamese factory workers as a result of being stabbed by their 28-year-old housemate. In the 12.30am incident yesterday at a shoplot unit in Jalan Orkid, Bukit Sentosa the suspect wanted the lights off so he could sleep but the

two victims disagreed. Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Affendi said the argument led to the suspect taking a kitchen knife to attack his three housemates. After he fled, the fourth housemate, who was injured, alerted the police. The suspect was nabbed soon after. “The two victims, aged

36 and 25, were fatally stabbed in their abdomen and chest,” said Norel, adding the 25-year-old suspect was seriously injured on the palm of his left hand. "We found the knife which was ditched by the suspect about two kilometres from the scene.”

The bodies were sent to Hospital Kuala Kubu Baru for post-mortem, while the injured housemate, was treated at Hospital Selayang. The case is being investigated under Sections 302 and 330 of the Penal Code for murder and causing hurt.

POLICE have denied claims that videos over the Internet of a man allegedly being man hand le d by p olice was former PAS member Baharudin Ahmad who died of a heart attack at the Bersih 2.0 rally last Saturday. The video clip which has gone viral over the Internet was said to have been uploaded from Sunday morning on several websites including bloggersites. Bukit Aman assistant director of public relations, ACP Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, told The Malay Mail police have yet to ascertain the iden-

tity of the man and stressed he was not Baharudin and police did not use force on him. "The man in the video was faking, showing signs of dying as though it was due to police manhandling. The policemen were actually trying to get the man to a nearby hospital where he recovered instantly." The information gathered from websites was that the person in the video was Mohd Suhardi, a land broker from Bangi, Selangor, and said to be a former follower of the Al-Arqam

religious movement. However, when asked to verify if the man was Mohd Suhardi, Ramli urged the person in the video to come forward and identify himself. "We cannot simply name someone without verification. The websites themselves published his contact number and if the man wants to make his identity known, he can do so." Taxi driver Baharudin, 58, was with his family in KLCC during the Bersih 2.0 gathering when he collapsed and died shortly after.

CITY police are baffled a suspected car thief jumped out of a stolen car driven by his accomplice midway through a high-speed chase yesterday and attacked the patrol car in pursuit with a parang. He was later shot dead. KL CID chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said it was highly unusual for a suspect to charge at police when there were two patrol cars and two other cops on motorcycles in close pursuit. He did not rule out the possibility that the suspect, a Bangladeshi in his 20s, was forced to jump out of the moving car by the driver who managed to escape. He said police had to shoot the Bangladeshi when he rushed at them brandishing

a parang. The suspect died enroute to Hospital Kuala Lumpur. "The accomplice, believed to be a Malaysian, fled with the stolen car and hit a patrol car while escaping. He was not injured although police fired shots at him." The incident at 2pm yesterday began when a car owner, who lodged a police report two days ago that his Proton Waja was stolen, spotted his car near a supermarket in Wangsa Maju. "The owner saw his car being driven by the suspect and his accomplice, and decided to trail it while calling the police.” It is learnt the car owner followed the suspect from the supermarket to a housing estate at Section 2, Wangsa

Maju, and police by then, had dispatched two patrol units and two other cops on motorcycles. "Upon noticing police presence, the suspects tried to escape but were cornered at Jalan 40/27b in Section 2," said Ku. "Suddenly, the Bangladeshi came out of the vehicle and charged at the cops on motorcycles, and that's when my men fired and hit the suspect in the neck." The Bangladeshi ran a few metres after being shot and then fell on the street. Police have launched a manhunt for the other suspect. Ku said: "We believe the two suspects may have been involved in other car thefts in the Klang Valley."

Quick homes for victims Villagers who lost entire belongings to fire get alternate accommodation

AT least 12 families are facing the prospect of a bleak Ramadan and Hari Raya after losing their homes and most of their belongings in a fire which razed their village in Kampung Chubadak Jaya, Sentul, on Tuesday morning. Mohd Salleh Ahmad, 60, a resident for over three decades, said his Raya plans to bring his family for a vacation in Penang took a knock after the devastating fire. "We were excited about the coming Raya vacation. However, the money I saved for it also went up in smoke. There's nothing left," said the father-of-seven. The retiree said even though his family received

RM1,300 from City Hall and Yayasan Wilayah Perseketuan, his holiday plans had to be shelved as there were other more pressing matters for his new home in PPR Batu Muda. "City Hall offered us a unit in PPR Batu Muda. We remain grateful for the help. We are also glad no lives were lost in the incident." Public used to the haze

THE public has become accustomed to putting up with haze almost every year since the 1990s. Some have even taken precautionary measures such as using surgical-type masks. There are even those who seem unfazed by the weather phenomenon until it worsens. "Almost every year we encounter the haze caused by too much open burning Indonesia. Yet the housewife's relief at having escaped the fire turned to anger and frustration as she claimed the Fire and Rescue personnel arrived only 30 minutes later. By then, she said, 12 houses were already in flames. "If they had arrived earlier, maybe some of us would still have a home," said Norliza, who lost at least RM10,000 in cash and belongings. "The earnings from my husband's food stall in Taman Maluri was in the house,"

she said, adding she only managed to save her handbag containing her personal documents. Ye s t e r d a y , F e d e r a l Territories and Urban Wellbeing deputy minister Datuk M. Shadows of War, the title track of Loudness' 1986 album, was included in their Lightning Strikes album specially for the US market released the same year. Loudness currently comprises Akira, vocalist Minoru Niihara, bassist Masayoshi Yamashita and drummer Masayuki Suzuki. Nikon opens second retail store By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my

NIKON Malaysia Sdn Bhd continues to offer hands-on experience for photography enthusiasts with the launch of its second retail store in the country at Suria KLCC, following its first at Alamanda Putrajaya shopping centre in October. The second Nikon Shop was opened in collaboration with Fotokem Sdn Bhd yesterday. Located on the third floor, Suria KLCC, the outlet is a RM1 million investment and offers a full range of Nikon DSLR and Coolpix cameras, lenses and accessories. “As demand is encouraging, we want to cultivate the photography culture in Malaysia and offer solutions

that cater to photographers’ needs,” said David Ng, Nikon Malaysia general manager of consumer products marketing. He said the Nikon Shop was extending the concept of giving shutterbugs the liberty of browsing and testing Nikon products at leisure and to develop their interest in the brand. "Our stores will organise photography clinics and workshops on a regular basis to improve the photography skills of our customers. “Nikon Malaysia expects over 40 per cent growth in revenue this year with our two Nikon Shops, the Nikon Centre in Berjaya Times Square, KL, and the opening

of a Nikon showroom in Kota Kinabalu next week,” said Ng, adding the company wanted to grow its business with the opening of more stores.

The Nikon Centre functions as a showroom, training and after-sales service centre while the Nikon Shop is focused on retailing its products.

That's my space

Townhouse owner says neighbour's wall occupying part of his car park FOR three years now, N. GOWRIKUMAR of Batu Caves has endured his neighbour taking up part of his parking space. The owner of an upper unit of a two-storey townhouse in Taman Laksamana Permai, says his groundfloor neighbour had built a wall that encroaches into his parking space. He says the problem began on March 16, 2008, when the neighbour built a 10ft x 4ft wall that occupies 40sq ft of his car porch. "The car juts out because the front portion has been taken up by the wall. This is causing me to lose potential tenants for my unit." GOWRIKUMAR says the developer, Zacklim Properties, had failed to erect a 3ft-high chain-link fence between the two properties when he first highlighted the problem to them on April 21, 2008. He says even after the Selayang Municipal Council officially instructed Zacklim Properties to build the fence in a letter dated Jan 24, 2011, the developer failed to do so. "The developer wanted feedback from more residents before building the fence but no circular or notice had been issued. If the residents here were not aware, how were they to reply?" he asks. "All this is causing unnecessary delay. It's part of the developer's responsibility but they have yet to act." He wants a clarification.

SHRUNKEN: A car can just fit into the space below Gowrikumar's townhouse

● ZACKLIM Properties

(M) Sdn Bhd managing director Lim Eng Hock says the company was originally instructed not to put up the 3ft-high fence when the project was completed almost 10 years ago. He says GOWRIKUMAR now wants them to put up the chain-link fence because he failed to prevent his neighbour from putting up the brick wall. "We are willing to do it provided he gets the brick wall removed first as we do not have the authority to tear down walls." Lim says GOWRIKUMAR should have discussed the matter with his neighbour if he had encroached on his space from day one, rather than complaining after so many years. When contacted, GOWRIKUMAR says Zacklim Properties is going against

the local council's order. "They should demolish the obstructing wall before putting up the chain-link fence. "My neighbour encroached onto my area because the developer failed to put up the chain-link fence in the first place."

TOWNHOUSE FACT TOWNHOUSES are two properties built on the same land, with the lower unit occupying the ground and part of the first floor, and the upper unit occupying the remainder of the first floor and second floor. They are different from condominiums and apartments and, generally, not as popular as other types of houses in Malaysia. In other countries, townhouses are also known as row houses.

No compensation for car trade-in loss AFTER buying a Proton Savvy in 2006, R. USHA DEVI claims the car spent more time in the workshop than on the road. "The car had been problematic from the start," she tells Hotline. "I don't question Proton's service but being without my car was the biggest inconvenience." USHA DEVI says she was given the same reason for the

fault each time — a computer problem with the AMT (auto manual transmission). "I had to get the car towed several times as it kept breaking down and it was embarrassing." She says the last incident was on Nov 25 last year when the car stalled. Frustrated, USHA DEVI sold the Savvy to a used-car dealer. She says her outstanding loan amounted to

RM26,000 but she only managed to get RM14,000 for the car. She understands Proton had recalled all Savvys with AMT problem and wants the company to compensate her for the loss she suffered.

● A SPOKESMAN for Proton Holdings Berhad says the company has responded to USHA DEVI via email on March 28 and also forward-

ed her complaint to EON customer service as her service record is with EON. "Based on our communication with EON, the documentation showed the customer's AMT problem, which derived from improper gear-shifting and resulted in difficulty in engaging gear, was settled with a warranted replacement," she says. On the request for com-

pensation, a Proton i.Care executive has contacted USHA DEVI to inform her the company is unable to accede to her request as the car value depends on the trade-in market value, of which the company has no control over. "We would also like to clarify there was no recall of the Savvy AMT model. In fact, the previous recall involving the Savvy was

for a rear spindle in March 2007," says the spokesman. "Should the customer need more information, call PROTON i.care at 1-300-880-888 and our personnel will be glad to assist further." USHA DEVI is unhappy with Proton's clarification. She says she will lodge a complaint with the National Consumer Complaint Centre.

Danger ahead Uncovered manhole an accident just waiting to happen

T. SAVITA was driving to a friend's house in Petaling Jaya recently when she noticed an exposed manhole in Jalan SS7/13. The manhole is on the left side of the road. "The road was slightly congested that day and I was wondering why. It

was only when I approached the manhole that I noticed that people were manoeuvring their vehicles to avoid it," she tells Hotline. SAVITA says the manhole poses a danger especially to motorcyclists who may see it at night. "It is an accident waiting

to happen. I hope the authorities will take action as soon as possible."

Billed for 'cancelled' service AFTER being a Celcom broadband user for years, Banting resident NURFAINIE IRDINA GANI terminated the service last December and installed TM Streamyx at her home. The 25-year-old claims she terminated the broadband service through telephone. "I contacted the Celcom call centre to cancel my broadband as I'm not under contract with them. I bought the modem for nearly RM500 and I pay RM98 monthly. I can terminate the line anytime, the modem is mine," she says.

Recently, NURFAINIE received a call from Celcom's lawyer, informing her she owes the company RM324.40. "I was surprised because I wasn't using their service anymore. I checked with the call

CELCOM AXIATA BERHAD says its investigation reveals the charges are valid since there is no record of the termination request. "We have informed the customer our findings.

centre again and found out that, apparently, they never terminated the line." NURFAINIE says she received another shock when the staff told her they never received any call from her. "They claimed to have

checked the call history and said I never called them. I'm upset as I have to pay for a service which I have already cancelled," she says. NURFAINIE says Celcom should not have put their former customer through this.

As a goodwill gesture, we have offered NURFAINIE a waiver of RM103.75 for her January 2011 bill and she has agreed to pay the balance." The company says it value all customer complaints and feedback and it continuously

strives to ensure customer satisfaction. When contacted, NURFAINIE says she agrees to settle the balance of RM220.65 as she does not wish to make matters worse.

Credit card that came late AFTER being promised he would receive a new credit card within days, BILLY TAN signed up with United Overseas Bank (UOB). It was only a month later that he received his credit card, and by that time, he did not need it anymore. "I didn't even bother activating the card. So, imagine my surprise when I received a bill asking me to pay RM50 service charge," he tells Hotline. "I should not be made to pay

for a card I never activated, let alone use. The bank had taken its own sweet time to send me the card and I don't want it anymore." BILLY says to make matters worse, he has reveived more bills and the amount has escalated because of late payment charges. "This is outright extortion. The bank is just charging me as it wishes." He wants a clarification from UOB.

● A SPOKESMAN for United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd clarifies there had been a delay in processing BILLY's credit card application. "Since then, the credit card has been cancelled as per customer's request and the charges have been reversed accordingly," says the

spokesman. "As a goodwill gesture, we are pleased to offer BILLY 20,000 UNIRinggit reward points if he wishes to retain the card." She says UOB has contacted BILLY. When contacted, BILLY says he is considering the offer to retain the card.

"We have alerted our contractor and an order has been placed for a permanent metal cover for the manhole." The spokesman says the council has instructed the contractor to attend to the matter immediately.

'Fruitless' RM17m city orchard (July 11)

Singing the same old song

THIS project bears a striking resemblance to the Paya Indah Wetlands in Sepang which is now in limbo. The wetlands project got off and was opened to the public but, over time, it was forgotten. Another white elephant. In 2010, it was reported there were various forms of deforestation taking place around the wetlands, and open burning and illegal sand mining topped the list of activities leading to the declining condition of the area. If I am not mistaken, Selangor environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong visited the area and promised some remedial measures would be undertaken to rectify the problem. However, there has been no news of the status of the wetlands ever since. Perhaps it is better now or maybe it has got worse. Whatever the situation may be, I just don't know because I never visited the area. The point I am trying to make though is that we have

been hearing the same old song again and again whenever it comes to governmentrelated projects. Everything is always rosy at the beginning but as time goes by — coupled with the lack of maintenance culture among

SOME orchard in the city this turned out to be? And a whopping RM17 million being wasted just like that. More shockingly, only three per cent from the allocation was spent to plant fruit trees in what was supposed to be

a sprawling 7.7ha tropical paradise. City Hall really needs to recheck its accounts on this and find out who is responsible for the debacle. There has to be a planner to the project, someone who

FIASCO: City Hall must now focus on ensuring the orchard project meets its objectives

us Malaysians — it just goes into a state of disrepair. I wonder who is the genius who thought up this idea of having an orchard in the city. Since the damage has been done, perhaps City Hall should

just lease out the orchard to the experts — farmers who actually know how to plant and care for the fruit trees. There is no use now of appointing another contractor to undo the job already done by the previous contractor.

Public money gone to waste approved it and someone tasked to monitor the development of the project as big as this. The public, naturally, would want to know whether anyone is profiteering on the project, charging an exorbitant fee

PJ Hike in fishing fee

Angling for extra revenue

IT pains us, the PJ residents, to read of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) wasting its time increasing the fees for recreational fishing at our lakes. Not only is it petty but MBPJ should tackle more serious matters such as providing enough parking places in the city and enforcement against those who do not park at designated areas. All that is needed is for the enforcement officers to have a look at the 'gangster-style' parking around the restaurants in Section 11 (in fact, the whole stretch of Jalan 11/4) during lunch and dinner. Then they will understand what I mean. Slapping these vehicles with tickets will prob-

ably earn the city council enough money to do away with charging fees for recreational fishing activities at our parks, such as Taman Jaya. Another area where MBPJ can collect money to pay for landscaping of Taman Jaya is by dismantling a metal structure behind HSBC Bank which is occupying not less than seven parking bays in the PJ New Town area. The weight of the collected metal could fetch thousands of ringgit and the money can be used for the landscaping budget. At the same time, the additional seven parking bays can also bring in some revenue. Finally, MBPJ should release about 30 empty parking bays on the ground

for the work already done to the area. To say all this is ridiculous would be an understatement. No wonder the world is always laughing at us. Dan PJ Bus seat belts (July 4)

floor of the multi-storey car park behind Standard Chartered Bank. These can also generate the muchneeded revenue for landscaping. The question now is why the need to impose more hardship on the PJ residents who, after a long hard week, just want to relax and enjoy fishing. MBPJ officials should not be so selfish in their thinking; RM5 may not be much to them to fork out for a weekend fishing trip, but tell that to those with lower income who have no money left for other forms of entertainment. Please give us a break, MBPJ. Don't make decisions sitting under a coconut shell.

I HAVE to agree with the opinion of The Malay Mail reader Abdul Halim, who called for the authorities to stick to the real issue to resolve the problem of deaths caused by accidents. From my own observation, unfit drivers are usually the reasons for these tragic accidents, next to poorly-maintained buses and road conditions. Educating the drivers is the key to resolving the matter and bus companies should make it their priority. I feel that installing seatbelts may help but probably in a small way. The authorities should have the right people taking charge of the safety issue instead.

Planting trees, after all, is not as simple as digging a hole, putting in the seed and leaving nature to do its work. Trees need constant watering, fertilisers, pesticides, pruning, and some tender

loving care. I am sure there are plenty of talents out there who can turn this orchard into what it was supposed to be. In 2005, then KL mayor Datuk Ruslin Hassan had said that upon completion, the orchard park would have 100 species of local fruits like durian, mangosteen, langsat, duku, rambai, ciku, cempedak, jackfruit, guava and banana trees, among others. To make this work, we can even have one or two farmers to focus on just one or two type of fruit trees. I agree with the current mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, who refuses to adhere to the contractor's request for more money. Ahmad Fuad said City Hall will have to think of how to "undo the wrong" and ensure the park meets its objective. Whatever the outcome may be, please make sure it is for the good of the people and not another waste of the taxpayers' money. Mokhtar

KL Singer full of remorse during public confession (July 4)

Courageous act IT was really courageous of Yi Jet Qi, the Taiwan-based Malaysian singer, to admit his mistake in public. Not many dare to admit to their wrongdoings, especially famous people. For the uninitiated, Yi was caught in a controversy where he was accused of stealing money from Penny Tai, another Malaysian singer and also a good friend of his, last February.

I just hope the 39-year-old singer will be able to recuperate and come through from his depression... and his friends to continue giving their support. Do find solace in religion, go and find God, surely you will find Him. If you try hard to find God, God will try harder to find you simply because He wants you to find Him. Nawawi

making their way to the stadium early to catch their idols live in action, even though the gates only opened at 6.15pm, to witness the match that saw Arsenal swat Malaysia 4-0. A diehard Arsenal fan, Allan Liew, said he took the day off from work to catch the match. "Being an Arsenal fan, I wanted to enjoy the atmosphere leading up to the game as well. "It is not just about seeing my favourite players but also about strolling in a sea of fellow Arsenal fans, wearing red and chanting club songs. "I feel as if I am at the Emirates," said Liew, who was among the 65,000 fans in the stadium last night. The meet did not just attract Arsenal fans. Manchester United supporter Justin Ho also wanted to see one of the best teams in the EPL play. "It is not often one gets to see worldclass players in action. I was around when

Manchester United came down and will be going for the Liverpool and Chelsea matches as well." Chelsea will play Malaysia's Under-23 on July 21. Many fans, however, were disappointed the match was not telecast live on television. Local TV channels were unable to carry the match as the minimum required tickets sold to show the match as of Tuesday was not met. As a result, many resorted to watching the "live stream" feed of the game online. Red will once again make an appearance here when Merseyside giants Liverpool play our national team on Saturday.

21 slain on Tuesday in Mexico's most violent city MEXICO'S most violent city, Ciudad Juarez, suffered its deadliest day this year on Tuesday, with 21 homicides, local officials said yesterday. "It was the most violent d ay t h i s y e a r, s u r p a s s i n g Feb 18 when 19 people were killed," said a spokesman for the State prosecutor. The border city of Juarez, which lies opposite the Texas city of El Paso, has for the past three years been at the center of an ongoing war between two drug cartels,

Juarez and Sinaloa, for control of the lucrative market in the United States. Last year, the city recorded more than 3,100 homicides. THE government should have the right to remove severely obese children from their parents' home and place them in foster care, two US doctors argued in a controversial editorial published yesterday. "State intervention may serve the best interests of many children with life-threatening obesity, comprising the only realistic way to control harmful behaviours," wrote Lindsey Murtagh of the Harvard School of Public Health and David Ludwig of Children's Hospital in Boston. "In severe instances of childhood obesity, removal from the home may be justifiable from a legal standpoint because of imminent health risks and the parents' chronic failure to address medical problems." Some two million children in the United States are considered severely obese with a body mass index at or above the 99th percentile, the doctors wrote. "Obesity of this magnitude can cause immediate and potentially irreversible consequences, most notably type 2 diabetes," they said. Child abuse laws have long addressed situations in which children are starved or neglected, but "only a handful of states, including California, Indiana, Iowa, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas, have legal precedent for applying this framework to overnourishment and severe obesity." — AFP

US, Russia approve adoption safeguards

THE United States and Russia agreed yesterday to strengthen safeguards on adoptions, hoping to remove a key irritant in relations as the two powers look to improve cooperation. On a visit to Washington, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took up a range of issues from Libya to Syria to missile defense. In a rare step for a non-head of state, Lavrov met at the White House with President Barack Obama. Lavrov signed an accord with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on adoption. Many Russians were outraged last year when a Tennessee woman returned her seven-yearold adopted son on a flight alone back to Russia with a note saying he was violent and she could not care for him. "We take very seriously the safety and security of children that are adopted by

American parents and this agreement provides new, important safeguards to protect them. It also increases transparency for all," Clinton told reporters. Under the accord, only agencies approved by Moscow would be able to arrange adoptions in Russia, officially ending the role of independent services. The only exception would be for children adopted by biological relatives. The agreement also calls for Russia to provide more information on children's social and medical histories and for monitoring and reporting on US parents after they adopt children. The United States has the world's most adoptive parents and Russia has long been one of the biggest sources of children, with only China and Ethiopia providing more children last year. — AFP

THREE bombs ripped through India's commercial capital Mumbai yesterday, killing 21 people and injuring more than 100 in the deadliest attack in the city since the 2008 assault by Islamist militants. The coordinated blasts hit busy districts in the south of the city, the same area targeted two and half years ago by Pakistan-based militants who caused mayhem and bloodshed during a 60-hour siege that left 166 people dead. "It is another attack on the heart of India," said the chief minister of Maharashtra

Gaddafi's days are numbered

SECRETARY of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's (pic) "days are numbered" after signs of advances on the field by rebels. Clinton, at a joint news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, said that Gaddafi had yet to meet "red lines" of withdrawing his forces and stepping down. "Although neither of us can predict to you the exact day or hour that Gaddafi will leave p o w e r,

gold market and a district housing diamond traders and jewellery shops, which is also home to Mumbai's abandoned opera house. All three explosions went off within a 15-minute period, starting at about 6.50pm local time. Fashion photog rapher Rutavi Metha heard a "massive" explosion and ran towards the site of the bomb in the gold market area known as Zaveri Bazaar, a target for explosions in 2003 that killed 52 and injured more than 150. "There were bodies on the

we do understand and agree that his days are numbered," she said. "We will continue to work closely with our international partners including Russia to increase the pressure on him and his regime." Clinton said she hoped eventually for a ceasefire that will "give the Libyan people a way to plot their way forward." A correspondent in the field said Libyan rebels had repulsed Gaddafi loyalists in the desert hamlet of Gualish — AFP

News Corp will struggle to recover: Branson THE media empire that Rupert Murdoch heads is getting its "comeuppance" for long questionable practices and will struggle to recover its reputation after the phone-hacking scandal, Richard Branson (pic) said yesterday. The Virgin Group boss, asked about the importance of branding, for which Branson's own multi-national group is famous, said Murdoch's businesses around the world could suffer because of the British firestorm. "Your reputation is all you have in life, your personal reputation and the reputation of your brand, and if you do anything that damages that reputation, you can destroy your company," said

the British entrepreneur and tycoon with holdings in media, music and travel, among others. "In the UK right now, News International are on their knees. You could argue that they should have been on their knees years ago because the way they've run some of their newspapers has been quite questionable for a long time. "But they're certainly getting their come-uppance now, and it's going to be very difficult for that brand to ever recover." — AFP

testdrive By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my A MAN who is aware of his emotions and can properly match a pair of brown pants with shirts, shoes and accessories is described as a metrosexual man. Well, here is a car that can juggle the needs of a city dweller for a comfortable, stylish after-hours transport and spacious weekend shuttle. So it deserves the title ‘metromechanical sedan’, a car that has been engineered to be sensitive to the many needs of modern lives in the metropolis. The City badge was first used on a K-Car but later came out to describe the entry-level car for the developing market and since then, it has been quite the sales stealer for Honda. The current model has enjoyed a strong following thanks to the combination of strong brand image and clever packaging. Given the size limitations in terms of its footprint,

engineers working on the City had to work hard to find extra room inside the car. The solution was to raise the roof slightly, push the cabin forward and back, and design everything around the generous proportions of the passenger compartment. The resulting styling is a compromise and some will say that it looks too pudgy to be exciting while others can see beauty in the City’s

Metromechanical sedan The engine’s ability to spin smoothly at high speed is the key factor that makes Honda City a reasonably fun car to drive

purposefulness. Engineers then went to work in the cabin to give it more versatility and the biggest innovation Honda found was the flat floor.

Removing a central hump that spines the length of the cabin may not seem like a major coup in releasing interior volume but in reality, it makes a world of difference to those sitting at the back. The ability of the rear passengers to scoot across the cabin without having to lift their leg over a tunnel creates

an impression of space that cannot be achieved any other way and the success of this design means that the flat floor has become a feature in other Honda models. Honda also worked hard to design front seats that are relatively slim in order to release even more cabin space. Overall, the City is a class leader in terms of interior space but it does fumble when it comes to versatility, thanks to the lack of magic seats that were offered in the previous model Honda City. The ‘magic’ rear seat squabs folded upwards to reveal a large flat floor that can swal-

low a decent-sized furniture. Now it just has 60:40 folding rear seats that allow long objects to be carried. Honda made up for the lack of the magic seats by fitting storage bins under the rear seats - it’s fairly useful but nothing near as useful as an upward-folding seat squabs. Honda gave the City a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that cranks out 120PS of power and 145 Newton metres of torque. While these figures are not enough to distinguish the City from the competitors, the willingness of the engine to whip all horses to work makes it stall head and shoulders over the other players. The engine’s ability to spin at high speed without complaining or sounding painful is typical of Honda power plants and most of this is down to the way they engineer the VTEC system. In this case a single camshaft i-VTEC system is designed to sip fuel at low to midrange speed and give the driver a mild shove if the throttle is shoved into the carpet. It would be a lie to say that the City is a sporty vehicle

but as a city car, it possesses sufficient gusto to keep drivers happy when they want to drive at a brisk pace. In the market segment that it shares with the Toyota Vios, the City also has to worry about two new kids on

the block in the shape of the Kia Forte and Proton Inspira, vehicles that fight one class above in terms of size but in the same category with the City when it comes to price.

High performance rubber impr THE Continental SportContact (CSC) model has always had a strong presence in the premium replacement tyre market and this is due to the balance of grip, durability and progressive and forgiving nature of the rubber. A few weeks ago, the German rubber giant invited a select group of journalists to the Sepang International Circuit to experience the various qualities of the SportContact 5 (SC5), the latest incarnation of the now famous CSC range. When compared with its popular predecessor, the new tyre reflects the considerable progress made by the tyre engineers through extensive research and testing during the development stage. All their hard work and dedication has created a tyre that brakes harder, lasts longer and feel more predictable when under pressure. Continental says, braking distance on both wet and dry roads have been markedly reduced. Furthermore, rolling resistance was cut by over 10 per cent and mileage performance enhanced by 13 per cent. These improvements were due in particular to the tyre’s innovative compound, which is designed to achieve maximum transmission of forces when braking and low-rolling resistance during normal driving. To do this, the rubber formula, referred to as BlackChilli Compound, utilises the different vibrations of the tyre. Apart from improving wear

By 4)".46- :6/04 lifestyle@mmail.com.my rate, and reducing braking distance, the BlackChilli Compound is also more progressive and predictable when it comes to dealing with driver inputs. We were given a chance to experience the SC5’s wet braking performance through a series of emergency stopping exercise that also included lance change and obstacle avoidance elements. Even on the limit, as the rubber is forced to handle maximum braking force, the tyre is still able to translate directional change without upsetting the car’s balance too much. Continental engineers say that the tyre’s full potential can

be experienced in a car that is fitted with electronic stability programme because it has been designed for high performance vehicles which are, typically fitted with ESP. Later we were let loose on an extended session on the North Track, with the SC5 tyres fitted to BMW 3-series and discovered what it meant to have progressive and predictable tyres. Track driving meant braking much later than drivers would on the road and it also meant attacking corners a lot more aggressively than on the streets, and these are perfect conditions

for exposing flaws in both car and tyre design. We know that the BMW 3-series has neutral handling characteristics with a tendency towards understeer at higher speeds so we base our evaluation of the tyre on these known parametres. Turn 1 of Sepang will show off a tyre’s ability to handle heavy handling as the car brakes hard and turns right at the last minute to meet the late apex and here the SC5 showed that it could respond quickly to strong steering input despite having to dissipate heavy braking forces.

The quick succession of corners meant that drivers try to get on the power early here and this usually means a slight tail wiggle or significant frontend wash of understeer. The CS 5 acquitted itself well with controlled understeer and a planted rear. Turn 2, is a hairpin left hander with a noticeable corkscrew which magnifies a tyre’s ability to progressively warn drivers of an impending loss of grip. The SC5 gave clear, early warning if the driver piles on the power too early just as the car passes the corkscrew apex, allowing for confident correction. The long, high-speed right hander allows cars and tyres to show off ultimate grip and ability to forgive driver’s mistake. Continental’s newest baby doesn’t disappoint here either. It grips tenaciously while communicating clearly with the driver on grip reserves. Steering correction at high speed sees the tyre progressively breaking grip before gently taking it up again as the driver lifts off the throttle or counter steers. There are no nasty surprises, just a moment of directional change and a glimpse of loss of grip. Turn 4 is a high-speed rightangle corner with early turn in and early on the power to maintain momentum on the uphill to the high speed twins of turn 5 and 6 — and it is a well known front tyre eater with

inexperienced drivers battling terminal oversteer on the high entry speed. Provided that the driver enters the corner at the correct speed, the SC5 will tolerate early throttle input quite well, controlling understeer admirably and regaining grip with judicious balancing of the throttle. Turn 5 and 6 is the perfect place for exploring high-speed transition from a left to right hander. It is one of the best ways to experience the SC5’s ability to handle high lateral loads without losing its progressive and forgiving nature. Grip limit starts showing up on the steering wheel well before any

dramatic squealing which also indicates sideways slip and high rubber wear. Our time on track, with over 20 laps of hard driving showed that the SC5 is not only responsive, grippy, progressive and forgiving but also resistant to wear as the performance barely deteriorated even after an extended circuit session which would have decimated other rubber. The SC5 is available from Continental Ultra High Performance tyre dealers as a 50 to 35 Series car tyre suitable for 17 and 18 rims and approved for speeds of up to 300km/h (187mph). Efficient luxuries

THE Mercedes-Benz S-Class V221 is known for its elegant lines. Now that it comes fitted with BlueEFFICIENCY engines, it can also claim to be environmentally sound. This extensively updated new series of the world’s most successful luxury saloon is reiterating its claim to be the standard for automotive progress. The ultra-modern 3.5-litre V6 engine of the S 350 L BlueEFFICIENCY is naturally aspirated but was designed with a turbocharger in mind, thanks to the modular design concept. The most noticeable change between the new V6 unit and its

predecessor is a reduction in the V-angle between the cylinder banks from 90 degrees to 60 degrees. This enables the primary balancer shaft to be omitted, and as a result, the driver registers an outstanding level of comfort. A completely new air intake and exhaust system in conjunction with a variable resonance intake manifold have optimised inflow and outflow to result in 306 hp, while maximum torque has increased by 5.7 per cent to 370 Newton metres. The higher output comes with reduced fuel consumption from 10.0 litres of premium petrol per 100km and it now burns 7.6

litres per 100km. This makes the S 350 L BlueEFFICIENCY the most economical petrol model in the luxury class. Meanwhile, the new V8 biturbo engine in the S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY generates 435 hp and 700 newton metres of torque– an increase of 32 per cent. Despite a considerable increase in power of 35 kW (47 hp), Mercedes developers have been able to reduce the combined fuel consumption of the S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY significantly. At 9.3 litres of premium petrol per 100km, this is 16 per cent below the figure for the preceding

model. Other interesting features offered on these two models include Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Night View Assist Plus with infrared camera for special pedestrian detection function, and Drowsiness detection on the basis of more than 70 parametres. They have also packed Brake Assist (BAS) PLUS and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity cruise control with the new S 350 L and S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY. The new S-Class is also a leader in in-car-entertainment with Logic 7 technology developed by Mercedes-Benz together with the audio specialists Harman

Kardon. It delivers an outstanding performance with threedimensional sound as a natural 360-degree musical experience for all passengers. The S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY is equipped with an even higher grade sound system, the Bang and Olufsen Beosound AMG sound system. This premium sound system comes with 15 loudspeakers and a total output of 1200 watts. The new locally assembled Mercedes-Benz S 350 L and S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY are priced at RM840,888 and RM1,056,888 respectively.

was enough to push the Shah Alam carmaker’s cumulative numbers ahead of the rest. Industry insiders say the implementation of the new Hire Purchase Act (HPA) has hurt the sales of Perodua more than Proton in June and this will further consolidate their leadership position in the sales chart. Perodua reported sales

SINCE the launch of the new Myvi, Perodua became the most popular brand in Malaysia. Therefore, news that Proton has finally overshadowed its main competitor was big news. Although the number for June has yet to be finalised, Proton outsold Perodua in January and May and this

shrinkage of between 25 and 30 per cent as a result of the new HPA while Proton says their June numbers fell between 10 and 20 per cent. According to published MAA data, Proton sold 72,211 vehicles in the first five months while Perodua found 70,597 buyers for their models. Proton’s sales made up 28 per cent of the market total and by June, that figure was expected to rise to slightly above 30 per cent.

Have on-board dynamo, will travel

SWEDISH carmaker Volvo is keen to cement its reputation as an ecologically responsible company and to do that, they are taking quick steps towards electrification. Pure electric cars have limited range and have really expensive battery arrays so the current trend is to augment the range limitations with an on-board combustion engine which can stretch their possible travelling distance. These cars are called Range-Extender Electric Vehicles. "This is an exciting expansion of our increasing focus on electrification. Battery cost and size mean that all-electric cars still have a relatively limited operating range," said Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineering at the Volvo Car Corporation. “With the Range Extender, the electric car has its effective range increased by a thousand kilometres - yet with carbon dioxide emissions below or way below 50g/km,” he added. They came up with three concept vehicles as a way of demonstrating the three different technology combinations being pursued in Gothenburg.  TECHNICAL CONCEPT I: VOLVO C30 WITH SERIESCONNECTED RANGE EXTENDER This is based on a C30 Electric with a three-cyl-

inder combustion engine producing 60 horsepower (45 kW) connected to a 40 kW generator installed under the rear load compartment floor. The Range Extender increases the electric car's range by up to 1,000km on top of the 110km range provided by the car's battery pack. 

TECHNICAL CONCEPT

II: VOLVO C30 WITH PARALLEL-CONNECTED RANGE EXTENDER Although it basically

gets a more powerful version of the same three-cylinder engine that appears in the series-connected concept, the parallel connection means the turbocharged 190 horsepower engine primarily drives the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The Range Extender increases the electric car's range by more than 1,000km, in addition to the range of up to 75km provided by the car's battery pack. TECHNICAL CONCEPT III: VOLVO V60 WITH PARALLEL-CONNECTED RANGE EXTENDER

This is a solution whereby the entire drive package is installed under the bonnet at the front. The 111 hp (80 kW) electric motor is supplemented with a three-cylinder petrol turbo engine producing 190 hp (140 kW), a two-stage automatic transmission and a 40 kW generator. Power from the combustion engine drives the front wheels via the gearbox and recharges the battery pack whenever needed. The battery pack is located under the rear load floor and it gives the driver a range of 50km on electricity alone. The car also has a 45litre tank for petrol or E85. With this technology, the Range Extender increases the car's total range by more than 1,000km.

BEYONCE Knowles (right) spent £9,000 (RM43,368) in a 90-minute shopping spree. The Run the World (Girls) hitmaker — who is married to rapper Jay-Z — stunned onlookers in London's Oxford Street on Tuesday when she spent £5,000 in the city's flagship Topshop store before moving on to Selfridges, where she added another £4,000 to her clothing bill. A source told The Sun

newspaper: "It was like that shopping scene out of the film Pretty Woman. "Everyone was gobsmacked by the speed she was choosing clothes. When she hit the shoe section she picked up even more speed. The woman clearly loves footwear." Last month, Beyonce splashed out on 25 pairs of designer shoes as a 25th birthday gift for her sister Solange. Beyonce, 29, is known for

her generosity towards her loved ones. Last year she treated Jay-Z to a $2 million Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport car — the world's fastest road vehicle — for his 41st birthday on Dec 4. PETALING JAYA: FOOTBALL

Zimbabwe journalist claims FAM knew about match with club By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

Bigger field, better prizes at LPGA Malaysia SIME DARBY BERHAD and event organisers IMG have announced that the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011 will be even a greater showcase this year — offering better prize money and with an increase in the field size and number of playing days on the cards come October. The tournament, to be played over 72 holes (an increase from last year’s 5 4 hol e s ) , w i l l s e e t he prize money increased by US$100,000 (RM302,000) to a new high of US$1.9 million. The field size will also be expanded to 72 players from 60 last year and will comprise the leading 62 players from the LPGA money list and 10 sponsor invites. This year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be held from Oct 13-16 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s East Course. Sime Darby and IMG recently confirmed that two Malaysian golfers, Kelly Tan and Je a n C hu a , w o u l d receive two of the sponsors’ invites for the 2011 championship. Rising star Kelly ended in a commendable 32nd to finish as the leading local player in last year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, while Jean Chua recently played in the US Open 2011. Last year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia was won in spectacular style by a fast-finishing Ji m i n Kang of South Korea, who made birdies on three of the final four holes to edge out the legendary Juli Inkster for the title. The field also included nine of the top 10 players on the Rolex Rankings and five Malaysians.

THE "Asiagate" scandal involving Zimbabwe club Monomotapa United and Malaysia in 2009 took a twist after Zimbabwean journalist Hope Chizuzu revealed the FA of Malaysia (FAM) were aware a club team would play in KL. Chizuzu appeared before a Zimbabwe FA (Zifa) investigation committee on March 25 to answer several questions specifically on Monomotapa's trip to Malaysia. In clarifying an earlier report by The Herald published on Tuesday, Chizuzu had, in the statement "Hope Chizuzu Speaks on Asiagate Allegations" published by the same daily yesterday, said: "On the question if, in Malaysia, they were expecting our national team, then

why did we send a club? My response which they (investigation committee) did not capture was: "My understanding was that Zifa had extended the invitation to Monomotapa at the insistence of FAM who could not take the cancellation at the last minute as Zifa had indicated they could not raise a team at that short notice.'" Chizuzu further added: "If there was any other reason, it was never communicated to anyone including the Zifa board member and club owner Solomon Mugavazi. It made sense for the team to get match practice ahead of the Champions League where they expected tougher opposition." This comes as a shocker as FAM insisted they were informed by Zifa that the Zimbabwean national team

agreed to play two international friendly matches at the Cheras Stadium. This was stated in a letter to FAM bearing the Zifa letterhead and signed off by former Zifa chief executive officer Henrietta Rushwaya. Mailsport was the first to expose the issue in its article "Con deal?" published on July 13, 2009. However, FAM had brushed aside the allegations and insisted they played against the 'Zimbabwe national team'. Checks revealed the players representing "Zimbabwe" were actually from Monomotapa United. The club players, however, donned the national jersey. Malaysia won 4-0 and 1-0 respectively. FAM are adamant they did not fork out a single cent for

BUSTED: The scandal first came to light in this article two years ago

the trip. Monomotapa, meanwhile, claim their flight was paid for. Further investigations revealed each player was paid after their match against the Malaysians. The players were said to have received at least US$2,500 (RM7,600) each while the coaches received double that amount. Elements of matchfixing are believed to be part of the scandal involving Rushwaya, several players and Singapore bookie Wilson Raj Perumal. Chizuzu also revealed: "We were not sure how many games we were to play but

were told that the club were called in at the last minute after the national team could not be cleared to go and play in Malaysia. "For the club it was very important to have some game time as (we) were to play Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia in the Champions League. If we realise some dollars from it, then that would be good enough to motivate the players." Zifa concluded its investigations and produced a 162page report on the scandal which was handed to Fifa and Zimbabwe's sports and recreation ministry recently.

Christina to soak in the experience By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

N AT I O N A L s w i m m e r Christina Loh has been making waves domestically in recent times. Next week she makes her debut at the biggest stage in the World Championship in Shanghai. She is delighted to be able to make an appearance at the world meet considering some of the seniors in the national squad have yet to experience it. The SMK Aminuddin Baki student wants to

enjoy herself and not be held down by pressure as she prepares to compete in the 50m breaststroke. "I'm not putting much expectations on myself beside improving my personal best," said Christina. "Age is on my side as far as swimming is concerned, and I want to gain as much experience as possible before

making a name for myself at the international level." Her fellow national swimmers, Kevin Yeap and Khoo Cai Lin, have already mentioned the kind of experience they gained from competing in previous editions of the world meet. Cai Lin was present in 2009 and Kevin was 18 when he competed in Melbourne in 2007. Both agreed the exposure they gained made them better swimmers.

"They said they watched how world class swimmers prepared themselves and swam. I will do that as well." "I also hope that competing in Shanghai will make me more composed when I mature as a swimmer," said Christina. Since she joined the national setup last year, Christina broke Siow Yi Ting's 50m breaststroke national record at the Delhi Commonwealth Games last year by clocking 33.22s, beating the previous record

of 33.64s. Christina has gone on to better the previous record on several occasions, namely at the Guangzhou Asian Games (33.42s), the National Schools Meet (33.18s) and the Malaysia Open (32.31s). However, national coach Paul Birmingham will not put much hope on Christina in Shanghai. He is more keen for her to perform at the World Junior Championships in August instead.

Clubs should respect other clubs, says Wenger

RESPECT should be an element when regarding a transfer of players to another club. Those were the words echoed by Arsene Wenger when asked on the possible departure of club captain Cesc Fabregas. Wenger was furious when told that Barcelona star Xavi was quoted, on the Spanish club's official website, saying Fabregas told BRUSHED ASIDE: him he was suffering Malaysia's Amirul Hadi because of not being Zainal (centre) fails to able to move to the get the better of Jack Wilshere (right) and European champiKieran Gibbs of Arsenal ons. — Pic: RAZAK GHAZALI "Clubs and their

players should respect other clubs. It shouldn't be on their (Barcelona) official website," said Wenger. "If Xavi indeed did say that, it is no surprise as this is not the first time he has disrespected Arsenal." However, he refused to comment on the possibility of Xavi's statement being true. "I can't be commenting on every comment made by others. Then I won't have time to manage my team. Also Arsenal is a big club, it is natural for there to be many transfer rumours," he added. Wenger also stressed that the

decision to keep Samir Nasri, despite the Frenchman being able to leave for free at the end of the season, was a collective decision with the board. He reckoned Nasri to be a professional and will continue to serve the club like he has always done. Meanwhile the Arsenal manager was happy with the display put on by Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. The duo paired in the midfied in the first-half of their match against Malaysia yesterday which Arsenal won 4-0. "They are only 19 and 20 years of age. People often forget that fact."

Don't get carried away, Ferrari boss warns

FERRARI president Luca di Montezemolo has warned his te am to keep t heir feet on the ground after Fernando Alonso ended an 11-race losing run for the Italian Formula 1 outfit at Silverstone. Before Sunday's British Grand Prix triumph Ferrari last tasted F1 success in South Korea last season, with

Alonso taking the chequered flag that day. " You we re go o d, you showed how to react to difficulties, you didn't lose your courage, you succeeded in improving in every area," di Montezemolo told Ferrari this morning. "But now, keep your feet on the ground, as we're used to doing because we know what

winning is all about." He concluded by urging Ferrari "to take another step forward, because we want to win again this year". The two-time former champion's Silverstone win pushed him up into third in the drivers' standings, 92 points behind Red Bull's defending champion Sebastian Vettel. Alonso echoed his team

president's note of caution, insisting: "This win doesn't change anything, we have to be realistic — 92 points behind is a lot. "We are taking each race one by one and will try to win as many as possible." Teams will now take a break before Nuerburgring for the Germany Grand Prix on July 22-24. — AFP

NEW HAVEN: TENNIS

Wozniacki to get busy

THERE are some tennis fans who believe world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki plays in too many tournaments, and that’s one of the reasons that, despite ascending to the top, she’s yet to win a Grand Slam event. New Haven Open tourn a m e nt d i r e c t o r A n n e Worcester, however, is more than happy that Wozniacki plays a busy schedule, particularly in August. "She is a player that likes to prepare for a Grand Slam by playing, whereas some like to rest or just practise," Worcester told New Haven's Middletown Press. While Wozniacki is still looking for her first Grand Slam victory, she's perfect in New Haven and will be looking to continue her unblemished mark this year at the New Haven Open at Yale (formerly known as Pilot Pen Tennis), to be held from Aug 18-27 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Wozniacki, who’s been No. 1 in the world since the fall, is the three-time defending

champion at the New Haven event and looks to tie Venus Williams’ record of four straight wins (1999-2002) at the tournament. Wozniacki won a WTAleading six events in 2010 and has won five times this year (Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels and Copenhagen), but has developed a special bond with the people and fans in New Haven. "She loves Yale," Worcester said. "She's gone on Yale tours, she has a special relationship with the football team. She wants to go to Yale." Wozniacki heads a talented field in an event that goes back to being women-only for the first time since 2004. She'll be joined by world No. 8 Francesca Schiavone, No. 12 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 13 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, among others. In all, nine of the top 25 women’s players in the world will be at the event. " We ' r e

quite pleased with this very strong start to the field," said Worcester. "The world No. 1, two Grand Slam champions, fan favourites like (No. 22) Daniela Hantuchova and (No. 25) Maria Kir i len ko, a nice group of rising stars. It’s a very strong start." — Agencies

Webber will re-sign, says Red Bull owner

AUSTRALIAN Mark Webber (pic), at the centre of a furious "team orders" row with his team chiefs during the British Grand Prix, will re-sign with Red Bull, the stable's owner insisted yesterday. Webber, in a clearly faster car, decided to ignore instructions from the pit wall that he should not close in on second-placed Red Bull teammate and championship leader Sebastian Vettel. Vettel, struggling for competitive speed on worn tyres, came home second behind triumphant Ferrari hero Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who registered the Italian team's first win this season and set up a possible revival in fortunes. The second placed finish helped defending champion Vettel increase his runaway lead in the title race to 80 points ahead of Webber, who is now second — but with little hope of fighting for the title if Red Bull have chosen to back Vettel against him. Webber admitted he was furious and had not obeyed the orders as he fought to beat his teammate, and will clearly need some convincing to stay with the team — 12 months earlier he had won at Silverstone and famously quipped "not bad for a No. 2 driver" on his slowing down lap. But Red Bull boss Dieter Mateschitz told autosport. com this morning that there were absolutely no doubts that Webber would stay with

the outfit next year. "Mark Webber will re-sign with us," Mateschitz said. "This will happen for sure. He is very popular within the team, he feels very comfortable and it is an excellent relationship. He knows this and we know it. "To be honest, Mark has no better choice than the fastest car and we have no better choice for a fast driver." The Red Bull boss also admitted he was fine with Webber trying to overtake Vettel despite the order given to him. "This is no problem for us," Mateschitz said. "Sebastian re a l i s e d t h at Fe r n a n d o Alonso was gone and could not be caught anymore, so he backed down. This let Mark close in. He would be a very bad racer had he not tried to attack and gain a position." — AFP

'Blade Runner' runs in Italy for Daegu qualifying time

SOUTH AFRICA'S Oscar Pistorius, the famed "Blade Runner", has said he has two more races in which to try and register the qualifying time for next month's world championships in Daegu, South Korea. The 24-year-old r unner, who has a best time in the 400m of 45.61sec, intends to run two races in Italy — in Padua on Sunday and in Lignano on July 19, the deadline for qualification — hoping to record the 45.25sec time that he needs to compete in South Korea. "I was hoping to collect

my ticket for Daegu last Friday in Paris," he told Gazzetta dello sport. "I will try again on the two occasions that remain open to me. "But if it doesn't happen, it won't be a big drama. My real objective is to make the Olympic Games." Pistorius, who had both lower legs amputated when he was 11 months old, has captured four Paralympic gold medals but since 2008 has been cleared to run in able-bodied races using his artifical legs: springy, lightweight, J-shaped limbs called "Cheetahs". — AFP

Organisers in Ballesteros tribute PLAYERS are being invited to write messages in a Seve Ballesteros book of remembrance at this week's British Open, the Royal & Ancient (R&A) organisers said yesterday. "This is the first Open championship since Seve's death and we have taken the opportunity to mark his passing in a number of ways," chief executive Peter Dawson (pic) told reporters on the eve of the third Major of the year. "The thrust of the messages from the players is what a wonderful inspiration Seve has been to golfers the world over and particularly in Europe. "Many of them actually said Seve was their own inspiration for playing golf. He was the guy they all watched when they were kids and they said he was going to be greatly missed." Ballesteros, who won the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and the US Masters in 1980 and 1983, died in May at the age of 54 after a two-year battle with brain cancer. "We also have quite an amount of signage around the course, tented village and at the entrance points featuring Seve and have some silhouettes of him around the 18th green," said Dawson. "His image will appear on the draw sheets every day and we are donating all the proceeds to the Seve Foundation. "That will supplement the large amount raised by the Seve Foundation at last year's Open which I understand was the biggest single source of income for the foundation last year," added Dawson. "All this will remind everyone as to what a great man he was and his connection with the Open." More than £1.3 million (RM6.3m) has been raised in total since the late Spaniard launched his foundation in December 2009. "The foundation is Seve's biggest legacy," his nephew Ivan said at the PGA Championship at Wentworth in May. "He fought all the way and lost the battle...but he started the foundation for cancer research so that people can win these battles." — Reuters

New venue for Rio Olympics

SANDWICH: GOLF/ BRITISH OPEN

An open Open

THE golf tournament at the 2016 Olympics will be held on a new site in the southern suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, the Royal & Ancient Chief Executive Peter Dawson confirmed this morning. The Rio games will see the return of the sport to the Olympic fold for the first time since 1904, but the lack of tournament level golf facilities in and around the Brazilian capital raised some doubts over where the venue would be. "The situation is that very recently, as recently as within the last three weeks or so, the Rio Organising Committee and the city of Rio confirmed that the Riserva Uno site, which is a site quite close to the Olympic village and quite close to the sea in the Barra area of Rio will be the site of the Olympic golf event," Dawson said. Turning to the question of the format of the Olympic golf tournament, Dawson said that the plan was still to stage one competition involving 60 men and one involving 60 women, both competing in a 72-hole stroke play event. — AFP

Patient Rose still seeking to surpass teenage heroics WHEN he burst onto the worldwide golf scene with a tie for fourth as a teenage amateur in the 1998 British Open Justin Rose (pic) would not have expected that 13 years later it would remain his best finish in a Major. Yet, despite claiming six Tour titles, topping the European Order of Merit, amassing almost US$15 million (RM45.3m) in prizemoney and chalking up top-10 finishes in the US Open, the Masters and the US PGA, the Englishman has never managed to nail one of the career-defining tournaments. Rose turned professional the day after his heroics as an 18-year-old at Birkdale but has failed to make the Open top 10 since. His nextbest finish was a tie for 12th at Carnoustie in 2007 while last time the Open was in Sandwich in 2003 he missed the cut. However, he has been in good form over the last 18 months and after an enjoyable practice round at a blustery St George's this morning he said he felt he was in with his best chance for a while. "I suppose I'm coming in not as one of the favourites

but I feel like I'm a real contender this week," he said. "It's a very open Open and there are a lot of guys like myself who have the game to do it and could do it but just need to put it together for four days. "We've had 11 different Major winners in a row and you could add the 12th on Monday and I hope it's me." Rose said it was difficult to identify which type of golfer the course and conditions would suit after a day when the wind blew in a virtually opposite direction to Wednesday, following a benign Tuesday. "I think that's the wind we're going to have tomorrow so it was a valuable practice round today but really you never know what you're going to get," he said. "This course really changes a lot in the wind. I know all links courses do but this one in particular because the bounces are so extreme so you've really got to think about your lines. "You have to play with the different winds — it's definitely tricky but it's a fun course. "It could suit a guy with a great short game because

you're not going to hit many greens out there but also it can suit the better ball-striker because you are going to need to hit great shots to hit the greens so who knows. "Whoever steps up will have to be on top of their game." R o s e f a m ou s l y missed 21 consecutive cuts after turning professional but kept plugging away until his talent blossomed and eventually earned him his first title in 2002. Now 30, he is something of a veteran of the Tour and said he thought the experience he has picked up would serve him well. "You are going to have to be incredibly patient — I think that's the major test this week," he said. "It's fun but you are going to face a lot of adversity and the guy who can deal with that and stay patient will have a great chance." — Reuters

No extra pressure on Americans, Watney says

Dashing Ishikawa ready for offensive JAPAN'S rising young talent Ryo Ishikawa will have no trouble catching the eye and gaining an army of new admirers at Royal St George's this week although he may find the British Open winds harder to win over. The precociously talented 19-year-old is already one of Japan's most high-profile sportsmen and looks set to challenge Irishman Rory McIlroy for Major honours over the next decade. "I'm not going to make the wind my enemy, I'm hoping to make it my friend and have some fun with it," Ishikawa,

whose colourful trousers have become a trademark, said after he finished his final practise round on the blustery coastal layout this morning. "The wind doesn't worry me too much even though it's different conditions to Japan. I'll play my natural game. The bunkers are a concern though, they're small and deep and nasty and nothing like the ones I'm used to in Japan. "I love links golf even though I don't play it much. It's a different kind of game. I hit the ball high but I won't

try to change too much. I'll just hope for some lucky breaks because the fairways are so undulating. But I won't get angry." It is hard to imagine much riling Ishikawa, the teenager from Saitama who has taken Asian golf by storm. Nicknamed Hanikami Oji, which translates as "Bashful Prince", his boyish looks and stylish outfits have already made him a favourite across the generations back home and blue chip sponsors queue up for his signature. He won his first professional tournament aged just 15

27

and last year carded a sensational 12-birdie 58 on his way to winning the Crowns tournament in Nagoya. With nine titles already under his belt on the Japanese Tour and an impressive 20th place at this year's Masters, no wonder McIlroy himself has tipped him for great things. "I'm very happy that people like Rory are saying good things about me," Ishikawa, who drew widespread admiration this year when he pledged his entire 2011 earnings to the Japanese Tsunami fund, said. — Reuters

AMERICAN hopefuls teeing off in this week's British Open need feel no extra pressure over the US winless streak in Majors that dates back to last year's Masters, according to top hope Nick Watney. It is the first time in golf history that five Majors have gone by without an American winner and the US media have been demanding to know what has gone wrong. The 30-year-old Watney, who will take part in his fourth Open at Royal St George's on the Kent coastline, said that to him, and most of his compatriots, nationality is not the prime consideration. "You never want to hear that you're inferior or something like that," he said. "But at the same time, again, all due respect to America, I don't think anybody here is trying to win one for America. "Golf is an individual game. We're trying to win every tournament, and if it happens to be an American that wins, then who knows, I guess we'll be on the comeback trail or whatever. "But I think the person that wins, whoever it may be, will be doing it for themselves first and foremost." — AFP

Under-fire Neid to stay on as Germany coach

UNDER-FIRE Germany coach Silvia Neid confirmed this morning she will stay on as trainer of the two-time world champions, despite her side's shock exit from the women's World Cup. The 47-year-old met with Theo Zwanziger, president of the German Football Federation (DFB), and general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach at their headquarters in Frankfurt. "I've got so much support from my players and from

so many other people that I am full of energy again," Neid told German broadcaster ZDF before the second semifinal between Sweden and Japan. The DFB bosses were quick to publicly back Neid and Niersbach described it as "a good decision for women's football". "We are convinced she is the right coach for our national team," he said. Neid has been the subject of much debate in Germany BANZAI! Skipper Sawa (left) celebrates with Nahomi Kawasumi after scoring Japan's second goal — AFPpic

since the hosts and defending champions were knockedout of the tournament after Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Japan following extra-time. Germany were bidding to win a third-straight World Cup title after winning both the 2003 and 2007 tournaments. Neid had said she would take some time to consider her future, but has always been backed by DFB boss Zwanziger and came to her decision far

sooner than expected. "I do not think that suddenly we did everything wrong. It just wasn't meant to be," said Neid, when asked about her side's World Cup campaign. The criticism of Neid has included the tactical decisions she made, but personal comments have also been made and the coach admitted she has been hurt by some. "When the criti cism is personal, and not factual, then I can't handle

it so well," she said. Bernd Schroeder, the coach of highly-successful women's side Turbine Potsdam, has been the harshest critic of Neid and the Germany trainer is offended. "Except for Bernd Schroeder, no other coach in the Bundesliga has criticised me and he has violated a code of honour," Neid said. Yesterday, Stefan Prinz, the father of Germany captain Birgit Prinz who spent the game against Japan on the

bench, accused Neid of creating splits in the team between young and old players competing for places. His daughter Birgit, who has retired from the national team after the World Cup, immediately distanced herself from her father's words. The Japan defeat cost Germany a place at the 2012 Olympics and Neid will now busy herself with qualifiers for the 2013 European Championships which start in September. -- AFP

Japan shock Sweden to set US final date

JAPAN booked their place in the women's World Cup final against the United States with a emphatic 3-1 victory over Sweden in this morning's semi-final after claiming another European scalp with an historic win. Despite their nickname Nadeshiko — a pink flower symbolising grace and beauty — the Japanese are proving no pushovers at Germany 2011 and having beaten the hosts 1-0 in the quarterfinal, they dominated Sweden in the semi. Japan are in a World Cup final for the first time in their histor y as striker Nahomi Kawasumi netted goals either side of half-time while captain Homare Sawa capped another impressive display with her fourth

goal in five games. There was no hint of the Japanese domination to come when Sweden striker Josefine Oqvist opened the scoring when she drilled home after 10 minutes past Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori. Her strike took a deflection off the boot of Japan defender Saki Kumagai, which lifted the ball out of Kaihori's reach, but the Asians were level soon after having noticeably raised their game in front of the 45,434 crowd. Midfielder Aya Miyama dr i l le d in a cross and Kawasumi wove her way through several Swedish defenders to scramble the ball home on 19 minutes. Japan finished the first half with 62 per cent of ball possesion and never reliquished

their strangehold over the Swedes. They dominated the firsthalf — managing six shots on goal, with three on target, compared to Sweden's one of each — and nearly scored in the opening minute of the second-half. Right wing Shinobu Ohno unleashed a long-range shot from well outside the penalty area, which beat Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl, but clipped the crossbar as it went out. With Sweden failing to put any consistent pressure on the Japan goal, the Nadeshiko put the game beyond their reach with two goals in four minutes. Sawa, one of the stars of this tournament, headed home after a goalmouth

scramble on the hour mark, her fourth in five games here. With the Swedish defence all at sea, the Japanese capitalised when midfielder Kozue Ando forced Hedvig into a hasty clearance kick and Kawasumi scored her second of the game when she lobbed her shot into an empty goal from 40 yards on 64 minutes. It was no more than Japan deserved having dominated the game, nullifying Sweden's attack into just four shots on goal all game compared to the Japanese's 14. THE UNITED S TAT E S struck twice late in the second-half to beat France 3-1 this morning and book a spot in the women's World Cup final where they will face Japan. On a rainy day in Mo enchengladbach, the Americans, who won the title in 1991 and 1999 and have never finished below third place in a women's World

Cup, took an early lead when Lauren Cheney flicked in a Carli Lloyd cross in the ninth minute. France levelled after the break with a Sonia Bompastor cross that bounced past US keeper Hope Solo but two goals in three minutes from Abby Wambach (79th) and Alex Morgan (82nd) secured a third World Cup final appearance for the Americans. "This is our journey, this is our dream," a beaming Wambach said. "France are a great team. There were

moments they were outplaying us but I am so proud of this team." "I know we are going to pull through. I have belief in this team. Everybody is working for each other." "We lost our legs a bit but we picked up the fight," said US coach Pia Sundhage, whose team needed a penalty shootout to overcome Brazil in the last eight. "I think it was obvious we had heavy legs so we had to adjust." — Reuters

Markarian wrath Mad Peru coach takes a swipe at everybody after Chile defeat

ANGRY Peru coach Sergio Markarian blasted journalists, coaches and referees following his side's 1-0 defeat by Chile in their final Group C match at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas yesterday. He criticised journalists for labelling teams as either attacking or defensive and appeared to take a swipe at the coaches of the competition's top sides, although he did not name names. He s ai d h i s d e fe nd e r Giancarlo Carmona did not deserve to be sent off against the Chileans and described the yellow card shown to another of his players, Aldo Corzo, as "laughable". "I'm fed up with labels, fed up with them," said Markarian. "The media, the journalists, the coaches who put labels on everything, I'm tired of it. "There are some coaches who are labelled as attacking, others who are labelled as not, it's everywhere, in every country. "It's very easy when they have the players and the pedigree that they do to say 'I'm an attacking coach'. I'm tired of it. Enough!" said the Uruguayan, visibly angry. When asked to clarify who exactly he was talking about, Markarian refused. Peru have come under some criticism for playing too defensively after scoring two goals in their three group matches. However, they have qualified for the quarterfinals by virtue of being one of the two third-placed teams and find out today who they face next for a place in the last four. Chile, with this tensed

win, finished on top of the group with seven points. The Chileans' winner dramatically came in stoppage time via an own goal by Andre Carrillo, who bundled into his own net from a corner after both sides had been reduced to 10 men in the 60th minute. This was when Peru's Giancarlo Carmona and Chile's Jean Beausejour were dismissed. Both teams were able to rest players with top-three spots in the pool — and places in the last eight — already assured. Chile made six changes to their starting line-up and Peru nine. Chile striker Humberto Suazo said they are capable of winning the Copa. "We have shown we can produce good performances. We have that chance to win the title. But we have to take a game at a time and not get carried away. "We have to play consistently well."

Sandro blow for Spurs

TOTTENHAM defensive midfielder Sandro is a doubt for the start of the new season after suffering a knee injury while on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America in Argentina. Sandro was sent for a scan after complaining of pains in both his calves and his right knee in training. Results showed he had ruptured the meniscus in his

right knee — an injury which requires surgery and usually takes around a month to heal, making him a doubt for Spurs' season-opener against Everton on Aug 13. The Brazilian Football Federation say the 22-year-old will return to Spurs, who will assess his injury further, and he will take no further part in the Copa America. The news comes as a big blow

for the combative midfielder, who was hoping to force his way into Mano Menezes' first 11 after missing out on Brazil's two disappointing draws in the Copa thus far. "It is a problem that I have had been feeling for some time,'' Sandro told UOL Esporte website. "It has been troubling me more recently because it has stopped me training.

"The scans showed that I have to have surgery. Unfortunately for me the injury happened now, at an important moment of my career. But I will have the surgery and try to recover soon.'' Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said: "There is swelling muscle in the calves and a rupture of the meniscus externally in the left knee." Sandro has become a popu-

lar figure at White Hart Lane since his move to the club in March 2010. He was signed from Internacional for £8m and played 26 times for Spurs last season. He made his international debut in 2009. The injury could further strengthen Spurs' already fierce resolve to hang on to playmaker Luka Modric, who is believed to have been the subject of two bids from Chelsea.

Argentina next for Uruguay URUGUAY secured a quarterfinal clash against traditional and bitter rivals Argentina — thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory over Mexico in their final Group C match at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata yesterday. Alvaro Pereira scored the winner in the 14th minute to ensure Oscar Tabarez's side finished second in the group behind Chile, who earlier defeated Peru 1-0, while Mexico were condemned to a group-stage exit from the competition for the first time. Diego Forlan and Nicolas Lodeiro both hit the woodwork as Uruguay sought the elusive second goal before an offside flag denied Rafael Marquez Lugo a late equaliser for Mexico. The Uruguayans started on the front foot with Mexico seemingly content to look for the counter-attack. Pereira pounced for his second goal of the tournament when a Forlan freekick was spilled by goalkeeper Luis Michel, causing panic in the Mexico defence. Forlan almost added to Mexico's woes a minute later with a fierce attempt from distance, but this time Michel was able to beat away the shot. Giovani dos Santos was Mexico's dangerman and forced a good save from Fernando Muslera in the 25th minute, firing low and hard across the Uruguay goalkeeper after a tricky run on the left-hand side. The action soon returned to the other end and the Uruguayans almost doubled their advantage in the 30th minute — Forlan hitting the post after Hiram Mier had failed to deal with Maxi Pereira's cross. Liverpool star Luis Suarez tried his luck from distance six minutes later but Michel tipped it around the post for a corner. Dos Santos was taken off at half-time and Mexico struggled as an attacking force without him. The Uruguayans continued to create chance after chance in the second period but, without Edinson Cavani out due to a knee injury, were unable to grab the second goal.

Chile, but a Nou Camp switch appears imminent after negotiations reached advanced stages over the last few days. And Biels a, w ho was unveiled as the new coach of Athletic this morning, believes the move — reported to cost the Catalans around €45 million (RM192.2m) — will suit both parties.

"He is not a Barcelona player yet, but I believe he will be very soon," Bielsa said at a Press conference this morning, which was transmitted on Athletic's official site. "I'm happy for him and for Barcelona. I think they mix very well, although Alexis would mix well with any club — and even more so at

Barcelona." Bielsa and Barca boss Pep Guardiola spent time together before the Catalan took the job as Camp Nou coach, but the Argentine says he did not ask the former Spain midfielder for advice before accepting the challenge of managing Athletic. "I didn't advise him back

Leonardo confirmed as PSG sporting director

LEONARDO was officially presented as the new sporting director of Paris SaintG er main t h is mor n ing , ending weeks of speculation about the management structure at the newly-rich French giants. Leonardo's arrival was made possible by the departure of Robin Leproux, who revealed earlier in the day that he had been removed from his position as club president. Former PSG f inancial director Benoit Rousseau was named as an intermediary successor to Leproux. "It's been a bit mad recently," said Leonardo, who spoke in flawless French during his introductory Press conference at Parc des Princes. "Lots of things have happened." The former Brazil international, a World Cup-winner in 1994, returns to PSG having starred for the club during the 1996-97 season but admitting that leaving his position as coach of Inter Milan had been a wrench. "It wasn't easy to leave Italy. There was a bit of confusion," he said. "I'm really happy because I was chosen by people who really want to do something special. I'm happy to be a part of this project." Speaking about his previous time at the club, he said: "It was a very intense 14 months and it was very difficult to leave Paris. I didn't expect to come back like this. Today, being here makes me really happy." T h e 4 1 - y e a r- o l d w i l l reportedly work as a director of football with sweeping p owers over pl ayer

recruitment. His imminent arrival had prompted speculation in recent weeks that head coach Antoine Kombouare would have to leave the club, but the club's new owners said Kombouare would remain in place. "I thought I'd been very clear in my previous statements: the coach is Antoine Kombouare," said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of majority shareholders Qatar Sports Investment (QSI). Senior club official Simon Taher said Leonardo would work as an "English-style general manager" and QSI clarified his role in a statement. "(Leonardo) joins PSG as a sporting director," they said. "His role encompasses all the sporting ac t iv it ies of the club. He will coordinate with the shareholders at the club and assist with t he identif ication and implementation of their strategies." Al-Khelaifi said: "We are very happy to confirm the signature of Leonardo today as sporting director of PSG. "His arrival guarantees good conditions to start the season for the teams and for QSI. We have every c o n -

fidence in his vision and his ability to continue to develop the club and make PSG a great team." Leonardo's appointment came hours after the decision to remove Leproux from his functions. Leonardo is believed to have held out for Leproux's departure as a condition of his arrival, as his desire to have complete power over transfers would have intruded into Leproux's remit. Leproux announced earlier on Wednesday that he had been removed from his position less than a month after QSI took

over as majority shareholders. "I have been removed as president," said Leproux. "My first thought is for the future of PSG. I tried with all of the teams that I directed to develop this club and work as seriously as possible. "From the bottom of my heart, I hope that the management team will have tremendous success." QSI completed a deal on June 30 that gave them 70 percent of the shares of the club. Leonardo met four days ago with Al-Khelaifi and the Qatar Crown Prince Tamim Al-Thani in London, telling them he would not come to Paris until the question of Leproux's future had been resolved. PSG finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, earning them a place in next season's Europa League, and lost 1-0 to Lille in the French Cup final. — AFP

then and I didn't consult him now either but I know, through common friends, that he agrees with my decision," he said. Bielsa, though, says he won't be picking up the phone to speak to Guardiola. No offers for 'Le Sulk', says agent THE agent for Nicolas Anelka confirmed that Chelsea have received no offers for his client, and has rubbished rumours linking the veteran forward with a move to the MLS. The 32-year-old will face stiff competition for a firstteam place at the Stamford Bridge outfit in 2011-12, with Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou also in contention for a starting berth. Due to the former Real Madrid attacker's advancing years, a move to the United States has been speculated, but his representative, Michael Wiesenfeld, has stated that he has not been approached by any teams for the Versailles-born attacker. "No MLS club has expressed an interest in him," Wiesenfeld told France Football. "If we try to think rationally, LA Galaxy is not an option. They have three high profile players — David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Juan Pablo Angel — and thus reached the quota imposed by the MLS. "So, unless Nicolas agrees to play for less than US$415,000 (RM1.3 million) gross per season, it is not feasible," he stated. The former France international has also been linked to the New York Red Bulls, where countryman Thierry Henry currently plays, and Wiesenfeld admitted this was more likely, despite no contact being made as of yet. " Wi t h r e g a r d t o t h e New York Red Bulls, they have Henry and (Rafael) Marquez," he said. "There remains a place for a (highprofile) player, as Dwayne De Rosario was transferred to DC United." Anelka's current contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2012. — Agencies

understand what actually happened. We didn’t play our brand of football today.” A silly tackle by defender Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak on Jack Wilshere saw Arsenal awarded a penalty in the fifth minute. Aaron Remsey had minimal problems scoring from the spot. The other goals were courtesy of Theo Walcott (37th minute), Carlos Vela (58th) and Tomas Rosicky (90th). Rajagobal is baffled as to why the players were stiff against the Gunners when

they have played in hostile environments in the past. The match last night saw around 65,000 fans at the stands, about 20,000 fewer than the full turn out for the FA Cup Final between Kelantan and Terengganu at the same venue last month. “It has nothing to do with stage fright. We’ve played in a more hostile environment in the Asean Cup (2009) in Jakarta. Our players should not fear anyone.” Rajagobal admitted his strike force, including Nor-

shahrul Idlan Talaha, failed to shine. However, he was quick to add hitman Safee Sali should be able to beef up the front line when the national side play Singapore in the preWorld Cup first-leg match at the Jalan Besar Stadium on July 23. Rajagobal could also call up Harimau Muda A’s Ismail Faruqi. The national team will play another English side Liverpool in Bukit Jalil on Saturday. Arsenal manager Arsene

Wenger also agreed the Malaysians lacked sting up front. “It is a very motivated team, very organised especially in defence but lack offensive play,” Wenger said. Wenger had no complaints over the performance of his lads. He also reserved special mention for the ardent Arsenal fans in the nation. “We discovered a new country and discovered how much we are loved here... something which is unknown by the players.”

ROME: FOOTBALL/ EURO 2012 QUALIFIERS

Italy to train on deadly grounds

IT was once a base for one of Italy’s most feared mafia organisations but now a field in Calabria is set to become a training ground for the national team as they push towards Euro 2012 qualification. The land in Rizziconi — confiscated from the ‘Ndrangheta criminal organisation in 2003 — is

likely to play host to the Azzurri for training sessions in August, October or November, the Italian Football Federation said in a statement. The symbolic move is an attempt to show Italy is winning its fight as a nation against mafia organisations. Federation officials ex-

amined the facility this morning, which has been converted into five-a-side pitches where 120 children between six and 14 play football. Rizziconi, at the end of Italy’s “boot”, has long been a centre of activity for the powerful ‘Ndrangheta with the city council dissolved in 2001

because of the group’s infiltration. “The national team coming brings great hope and encouragement for all young people in the area who are looking to turn the corner,” Pino De Masi, regional representative for anti-mafia group Libera, told reporters.

THE national team received a reality check last night. The 4-0 defeat to Premier League outfit Arsenal at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil left the whole squad shaken. National coach Datuk K. Rajagobal, suffering from a bad throat, was visibly disappointed with the outcome of the match. “We’ve got to accept reality. They (Arsenal) have top class players,” said Rajagobal. “I’m very disappointed and there is concern. I need to sit down with the players and
