Teen terrors

ONE nabbed by police under suspicion of murdering his girlfriend in cold blood. Two others for their role in robbing restaurants while wielding parangs. These three individuals share a common trait — all are in their teens and still in school, and have been intrinsically linked to criminal acts which do not reflect their tender age. In the first incident, police believe they are moving closer towards solving the mystery behind the gruesome murder of a teenage girl whose charred remains were found in Kampung Melayu Ampang last week. The girl’s body, naked from waist up, was found dumped just metres from several

houses, leaving police initially baffled over her identity. A 19-year-old UiTM student, believed to be the girl’s boyfriend, has emerged as the main suspect, following discovery of hair samples in his car, on top of possibly incriminating CCTV footage of him buying fuel at a petrol station, likely used to set his lover’s remains ablaze. In the other case, police have finally tracked down the thugs behind a brazen robbery last month at a mamak restaurant in Section 15, Shah Alam. CCTV footage of

the incident has become a viral sensation since it was uploaded onto YouTube. The video captured the actions of the parang-wielding gang who sent patrons running in fear as the culprits attempted to snatch a female diner’s handbag and ransack the cash register. In an unexpected twist, police have disclosed two members from the gang are Form Five students about to sit for their SPM examinations in November. The two cases have left the authorities bewildered over the involvement of youth in such criminal acts and begs the question: Are the kids alright?

But a couple received such a treatment at their nuptials in a Shah Alam home on Sunday while observing a tradition originating from Perak. It requires their family to prepare at least seven types of flowers and water from seven mosques, in this case, 11 of each were provided, including zamzam water from Mecca and rose water. Boy, 3, burnt to death A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy was burnt to death in a fire that razed a house in Kampung Simpang Cahaya Baru near Beluran, Sabah yesterday. Mohd Rauffel Yanshah was trapped in the house when the fire broke out at 10.20am. The boy's 53-year-old grandmother tried to rescue him but her effort was hampered as the fire spread fast. The woman, however, managed to rescue two other children from the burning home.

They are believed to be involved in robberies WHILE most Form Five students are mugging for their upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations, two teenagers were up to a 'mugging' of a violent kind. The duo, both 17, were among eight nabbed in connection with robberies at two 24-hour mamak restaurants in Sections 15 and 24. A CTV recording of one of the robberies went viral on videosharing website YouTube. Among the eight were two condominium security guards. Police believed the group could be linked to as many as five robberies in Selangor. State police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the incidents led to a special task force being formed to track down the suspects. "Following events at the restaurants on Aug 28 and on Friday, we gathered information from eyewitnesses as well

as analysed the closed-circuit television camera footage from one of the restaurants," he told a news conference yesterday. Based on witnesses' information and description, police arrested the suspects between Friday and Sunday. The first arrest was made hours after the second strike at the restaurant in Section 24. That robbery happened at 3am and the first suspect, a 25-year-old, was held at 11pm. "We arrested him at his unit in Rimba Jaya Apartments in Section 16. That led to several more detentions," said Tun Hisan. The second suspect arrested was a condominium security guard 27-years-old in the city. The third arrest was made on a 23-year-old, who was

the first suspect's housemate. Both housemates were oddjob workers. The fourth suspect was also a condominium security guard. He was arrested on Saturday. The next day, four arrests were made in Rawang. The 17-year-olds were among that group. "One of the suspects, in his 20s, was nabbed in Rawang. He was also involved in a house break-in in Gombak," said Tun Hisan. He said police seized a stolen Yamaha motorcycle which was reported missing in Shah Alam earlier this year. "We also seized a laptop bag, several jackets and motorcycle helmets from the suspects. We believe the suspects raked in more than RM10,000 from their crime sprees." Police are also seeking help from a man, identified as Veeramuthu Selvamoorthy,

19, to facilitate investigation. His last known address was No. 8, Jalan Ponak, off Jalan Meru, 42200, Kapar, Klang. "We believe the group indulged in gangsterism activities. However, it is too early to ascertain as investigation is ongoing," said Tun Hisan. He did not rule out the gang was vicious and heartless as they dared to strike in the presence of eyewitnesses.

On the teenagers, Tun Hisan advised parents to be more responsible in monitoring their children's whereabouts. "Parents must always know who their children are mixing with, where they go and what they do. Teenagers have the tendency to be easily influenced, and the responsibility lies with parents to ensure their kids are not influenced by negative conduct."

AMPANG: BURNT BODY CASE

Shock over student's detention EVERYONE — from family and friends to lecturers of a 19-year-old UiTM Seri Iskandar student in Perak — are in a daze over his detention on suspicion of the recent murder of Nurul Awati Mohamad Shakri. The second-year Bachelor of Quantity Surveying student was detained by Ampang police yesterday afternoon in Perak and remanded for a week until Monday. A police source said most of the suspect's friends and family members interviewed

by cops expressed disbelief. They were unsure what could have transpired between the student and the victim, before he allegedly resorted to such violence. It was also revealed the suspect and the victim were lovers. Police are probing jealousy as a possible motive. Nine days ago, residents of Kampung Lembah Jaya Utara in Ampang encountered a

shocking find just metres away from their houses, in some bushes by the road side where the remains of a half-naked girl, with close to 80 per cent burns, were found. Last Friday, the charred remains were identified by the victim's father from details of her gold bracelet, gold earrings and from what was left of the baju kurung she wore. The source said on that fateful Sept 4, the victim told her family she was going out to meet a friend. She went to the suspect's

house and was never seen again by her family. Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the suspect was picked up outside the university campus at noon. Police also seized the victim's mobile phone, a Perodua Kancil car belonging to the suspect's family as well as other crucial physical evidence. "We found strands of hair in the car, which have been sent to the forensic laboratory to see if they matched the victim's DNA profile."

BY day, three men worked as lorry drivers and co-drivers, ferrying goods. But by night, their skills were used for a more sinister purpose — alegedly robbing warehouses and driving off with the goods. However, their crime sprees ended last week after robbing a rice warehouse in Rawang, brazenly fleeing with the warehouse's trucks and stolen rice worth RM220,000. the heels of their six accomplices. Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah, said the incident unfolded on the night of Sept 7, when nine men beset the warehouse in Rawang Integrated Industrial Park. "Two security guards were manning the warehouse when suddenly the nine, armed with parang and wire cutters,

stormed the warehouse compound and overpowered them," he said. The group stole three trucks loaded with packets of rice . The guards, who were bound and gagged, managed to free themselves 10 minutes later. "The guards lodged a police report and we immediately conducted road blocks to trace the trucks," said Tun Hisan. He said based on a tip-off and police surveillance the next day, police went to an industrial

premise in Sungai Buloh and arrested a 25-year-old man. "That arrest led us to a housing estate in Sungai Buloh where we managed to detain two more suspects aged 25 and 30 years." The suspects led the cops to a store within the area where police recovered the three stolen trucks. "Upon inspection, we saw that several rice packets had been opened and the contents transferred into a large gunny

sack," he said. Only 54 packets of rice were left unopened and police believe the stolen rice was to be sold to grocery shops or small supermarkets within Sungai Buloh and nearby areas. The police are also searching for another six men they believe are involved in the robbery. "From the six accomplices sought by police, we've identified one who we believe can help facilitate our investigation," said Tun Hisan.

GOOD CATCH: ASP Zainal Abdullah (right) and ASP Chandran showing the stolen tyres

HOW did a man with two criminal records for armed robbery get a job as a security guard? This is what's puzzling the police upon nabbing the suspect, who was among four caught after they hijacked a freight trailer laden with tyres in Bandar Bukit Puchong yesterday. The guard was the accomplice of another suspect, an ex-convict aged 44, who has 18 criminal records and who was just released from the Simpang Renggam Detention Centre for crimes he committed under the Emergency Ordinance. Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the four, each armed with a parang, had stormed a used-tyre factory in the township about 10.45pm on Monday. "The robbers overpowered a Myanmar security guard, who was gagged, bound, then thrown into a nearby drain, before breaching the factory compound," he said. They then stole the trailer, loaded with 319 tyres, from the compound. "The security guard, who sustained injuries on his hands, legs and body, managed to free himself 15 minutes later and immediately lodged a police report," Tun Hisan said. Following a tip-off, police spotted the trailer at 4.30am

yesterday 26 kilometres from where it was stolen — at an open land within a Tenaga Nasional Berhad reserve land in Persiaran Surian, Petaling Jaya. "It was left unattended, so police surveilled the area," said Tun Hisan. At 10.10am, cops spotted four men approaching the location. As one of them opened the trailer door, police ambushed and apprehended them. The stolen tyres were estimated to be worth RM65,075. "The suspects, aged between 35 and 44, were arrested," Tun Hisan said. The ex-convict's accomplice was a private security guard with two past robbery records. "I don’t understand how a man with such records can be hired as security guard. There must be something wrong with the company that hired him," said Tun Hisan. He said the investigation is ongoing to determine if the other two suspects, aged 35 and 40, were the buyers of the tyres. Police also seized two cars — a white Perodua Myvi and a white Toyota Corolla — believed to have been used in the robbery. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery.

Samy Vellu-Chitrakala spat Bitter public feud ends with acquittal of former MIED chief executive

THE bitter, high-profile feud involving former chief executive of MIC’s education arm, Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), P. Chitrakala Vasu and her mentor Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, is finally off the public radar. Disclosures of alleged murky financial dealings of the MIC that were to have been laid bare, have dissipated following the acquittal and discharge of the mother-offour on three counts of cheating yesterday. The Sessions Court here freed Chitrakala, 40, on charges of allegedly siphoning off RM4 million from MIED, considered the jewel in the crown of the MIC. The court was told Chitrakala returned the money to MIED in one lump sum on July 29, prompting the Attorney General’s Chambers to drop the charges against her on Sept 6. Former MIC secretary-gen-

Cabbies to help fight corruption OVER 30,000 taxi drivers will be appointed as "mini ambassadors" to fight corruption in stages, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz (pic). The move, an initiative of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), is to engage the community in fighting corruption and raising their awareness and responsibilities. Mohamed Nazri said initially, the programme involves 200 taxi drivers in Klang Valley before being expanded nationwide. "Taxi drivers find information when chatting with passengers. In addition, they are the first people to interact with foreigners. "They can be our whistleblowers and can play the role of deliverer of information to MACC," he said after launching 'Kempen Perangi Rasuah Melalui Teksi' in Putrajaya yesterday. Nazri said that the taxi drivers would be briefed on ways to avoid, prevent and report corruption. Also present was MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed.

eral Tan Sri M.Mahalingam whom she was alleged to have induced to sign three cheques for RM1 million, RM1 million and RM2 million, respectively, in 2007, was relieved at the outcome of the trial. “I am glad a bitter chapter on MIED and the MIC has ended,” said Mahalingam who was a director and signatory of MIED Sdn Bhd. He said there was no loss to MIED as the money was returned in full to MIED Capital Sdn Bhd. “I am glad the matter was resolved amicably and had I testified, I would have said exactly what I stated in my police report,” he said. The former party stalwart said he was due to testify on the same day the charges were withdrawn. “Chitrakala is a good friend and I wished her well in her

She was alleged to have deceived him into believing the payments, which were made to Silver Line Services Sdn Bhd, were loan repayments to one Abdul Rashid Manaf, 65. The trial started on April 6 with Samy Vellu and his son, Vell Paari, testifying against Chitrakala. Chitrakala joined MIED as an accountant in the late 1990s and resigned in 2002 before being brought back on board in 2004 as its CEO. Samy Vellu retired as MIC president on December 6 but remains as MIED chairman. MIED was incorporated as company limited by membership in 1984 and was always advertised to the Indian community as MIC’s education arm. Reportedly worth more than RM1 billion, its core business is providing study loans to needy Indian students.

Ambiga not seeking political office THE Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan (pic) has again refuted claims she will be contesting in the next general election. The former Bar Council president said she does not know how the "rumours" came about. She told The Malay Mail: "The reason I'm not contesting is because I want to see through the demands of Bersih 2.0." A local English daily reported yesterday that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof demanded a response from Ambiga to state if she would be contesting in the coming general election on an opposition ticket. “No, I am not running in the coming election. charge yesterday. Chitrakala was not available for comment. Mahalingam echoed the views of ex-colleagues of Samy Vellu and Chitrakala that the relationship between the two would never be the same again. It is widely held that former MIC president Samy Vellu

won the fight with Chitrakala, who was his one-time confidante and the only woman to do battle with him. The Samy Vellu-Chitrakala row was one of the most intense during the flamboyant politician’s three decades as president of the MIC as it revolved around misappropriation of MIED funds and cost overruns in the construction of the AIMST campus project. The woman factor in the spat heightened public attention amid alleged shady dealings involving MIED and AIMST university and other colleges it operates. Both individuals traded allegations over who was responsible for the RM5 million MIED funds that went missing. On May 11 last year, Chitrakala claimed trial to cheating Mahalingam and was released on a RM 30,000 bail.

the demands of Bersih 2.0 must be implemented before the 13th general election. I would like to reaffirm I have no intention of running.” Bersih 2.0's eight demands are the use of indelible ink, cleaning up the electoral roll, reforming postal voting, minimum campaign period of 21 days, free and fair access to the media, strengthening public institutions, and eradicating corruption and dirty politics. Rumours over Ambiga’s candidacy swirled after she successfully led the Bersih 2.0 rally in KL on July 9 this year. The rally elevated her as a symbol of civil society’s dissent and her close relationship with opposition leaders led to assumptions over her political affinity. A few days after the July 9 rally, Ambiga had told reporters she would not stand in the coming general election because she does not have the “stomach” for local politics.

Educate illegal child immigrants not deport them ILLEGAL child immigrants can contribute to the country and should not be deported. Tenaganita director Irene Fernandez said her non-governmental organisation, which promotes the rights of migrant workers and other oppressed and poor people in Malaysia, handed a proposal to the Home Ministry that illegal child immigrants be educated instead. "Such children should be given proper education and necessary skills training to make them competitive and able to contribute to our country's economic growth," she said. "Certain industries depend on young immigrants and deporting them is not the best solution." Under the ministry's 6P amnesty programme from July 11 to Aug 31, at least 1.3 million immigrants had been registered and of these, 40,500 are under 12 years of age and 21,656 aged 13 to 18 years. There is a possibility some are victims of human trafficking as legal foreign workers are not allowed to bring along their dependents. "We believe the number

By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

of illegal child immigrants is much higher as a study conducted by us a few years ago indicated there are an estimated 60,000 child trafficking victims in Sabah alone," said Fernandez. "Many of the illegal child immigrants are children of illegal adult immigrants. If their parents are not deported, such children should not be deported too." When contacted on the matter, Home Ministry secretarygeneral Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said they are still checking the background of the illegal child immigrants. "For each child, we have to determine whether the child was brought here by their parents, or born here, or are the victims of human trafficking syndicates," he said. On Tenaganita's proposal on educating and training these children, Mahmood said those aspects do not come under his ministry's ambit. "It's up to the United Nations High Commissioner for R e f u ge e s ( U N HC R )

to do this." The ministry's 6P programme, expected to take six months to complete, comprises registration, legalisation, amnesty, supervision, enforcement and deportation. The programme's purpose was to cut down the number of illegal immigrants in Malaysia, and once registered, the foreign workers' particulars would be keyed into a biometric system. It is believed there are two million illegal foreign workers, almost equal to the number of legal foreign workers in the country. Mahmood also said advertisements on job vacancies will be made known later this week, with priority being given to locals. "The second phase of our 6P programme will be revealed at a Press conference on Sept 14 (today) at the ministry in Putrajaya," he said. On Aug 4, The Malay Mail reported there are five sectors which will focus attention on foreign workers, namely, agriculture, domestic help, factory, construction and the service industry (hotels and restaurants).

Keeping close watch Joint body to monitor Damansara 21 project

By PEARL LEE pearl@mmail.com.my

A JOINT committee comprising a property developer, residents and the authorities will monitor the development of 16 bungalows in Medan Damansara. The move is to ensure proper communications and monitoring among developer SDB Properties Sdn Bhd, City Hall, Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) and residents regarding the controversial hillslope development project, known as Damansara 21. KL mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail announced this to Medan Damansara residents at City Hall's headquarters yesterday. He said the committee would also be an avenue for all parties, including the residents, to be updated on the progress of the project. "They will meet once a month and everyone will know what is happening". Ahmad Fuad reiterated City Hall's stand that only 16 bungalow units instead of 21 would be built on the hillslope, a decision first taken in October last year. He said the project had been lying idle for too long and it was time for the hillslope development to go on. "We will inform the developer on the need to submit new plans. This, in turn, will be made known to residents," he said.

HILLSLOPE CONTROVERSY: The project site. (Left) Raiappan

However, no time-frame was given as to when the developer is required to submit plans to City Hall. Ahmad Fuad said the developer would have to adhere to guidelines, including having a 4.5-metre buffer zone between the development and existing homes below the hillslope. The developers must also ensure the Factor of Safety (FOS) for the hillslope was met — 1.5 for the disturbed part of the slope and 1.3 for the natural (undisturbed) slope. "The developer will have to surrender the land in the

buffer zone area to us and residents can make an application later for an open space behind their homes," Ahmad Fuad said. Asked about the status of an earlier judicial review application by SDB Properties against City Hall for reducing the number of bungalow units claiming they were not formally informed about it, he said: "We informed them before they would have to withdraw their application if they agreed to build 16 units." It is not known whether the name of the project would be changed in light of the new development plan. The residents present at the meeting said they accepted the decision and the fact they would have to compromise allowing the project take shape. Medan Damansara Residents Association secretary Peter

Raiappan said the residents welcomed the setting up of the joint committee as it would ensure proper communications should there be grievances. "The move for a buffer zone is also good as it ensures there won't be a repeat of the 2008 incident where a landslip damaged a home in the area," he said. The association's assistant secretary, Randhir Singh, said the residents were alarmed when City Hall called them up for a meeting yesterday but were happy that only 16 bungalow units would be built. Earthworks for the project, which started in 2007, ground to a halt in December 2008 after development plans were temporarily stopped following the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide tragedy. Before that, The Malay Mail had extensively reported on the project, which included a series of mishaps in the area. One of them was in June 2008, when a mother and daughter narrowly escaped injury when a tree fell on their house in Jalan Setiapuspa 2. Two landslips followed in August the same year, causing the collapse of a retaining wall and extensive damage to the kitchen of another house. This spurred the Medan Damansara Residents Association to protest and send a memorandum to City Hall in November 2008.

Hundreds stranded as LRT breaks down

HUNDREDS of commuters were left fuming yesterday morning when a technical hitch led to a two-hour delay along the Kelana Jaya LRT line. The line's first three stations, at Gombak, Taman Melati and Wangsa Maju, were packed with passengers going to work by 7am. The trains, which usually arrived at two- to three-minute intervals during morning peak hours, were reduced as only two to three trains made their way to the stations every hour. It did not help as all three trains were packed with passengers from earlier stations, leaving little space for passengers from the other stations to board them.

By T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my

This situation created a human traffic congestion at the stations where many were seen restlessly texting away on their mobile phones. Lee Mei Ling, 34, a bank executive from Taman Sri Rampai, said she was supposed to be at her office in Jalan Leboh Ampang at 8am for an important meeting. "I was at the station at 7am and disappointed to see people already queuing up to board the train. At first, I found it strange to see so many people at the station at such an early hour. Then came the announcement that the trains were delayed," she said, adding she finally boarded a packed train

at 8.30am. "I texted my friends who rely on public transport to go to work, to warn them not to take the LRT for the day. I hope the LRT services get better in the future as this is not the first time this has happened." Another regular commuter, Pauline Wong, 25, from Taman Melati, said she was 'trapped' in a train since 7.30am. "I was in a train heading from Wangsa Maju to KL Sentral. The train moved so slowly that I had to get off at the Damai station and opt for an alternative means to get to my office in Petaling Jaya," she said, adding LRT ser-

vice disruptions have been much too frequent. "I was caught in two-hour delays before. I feel frustrated, helpless and trapped but I have no other choice. If I drove, I would have been trapped in a two-hour traffic jam too and have no parking space on reaching my destination. The problem is due to public transport system that's not properly planned and does not cover a wide or extensive network of locations. This results in more and more people buying cars." Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) media affairs manager Azhar Ghazali told The Malay Mail the delay was caused by an underground technical problem.

Prepaid tax one of several issues THE proposed six per cent tax on prepaid customers purchasing reload coupons is just one of the many issues related to the telecommunications industry, consumer associations said. "I think it’s about time we stop thinking about the six per cent tax and start discussing other issues pertaining to the telco industry,” said Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) chief executive officer Datuk Paul Selvaraj. He called for more transparency in the charges on consumers. "We need to start looking into other areas such as charges. Such areas need to be transparent." He also called for the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to be more active in regulating telco service providers. "Even though providers are private entities, they still come under the MCMC. The commission needs to find a balancing act in catering to consumers' needs and regulating service providers." According to the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC), this was the sector

By RAM ANAND mmnews@mmail.com.my

with the most complaints last year, he said. Asked if the government tax should be borne by telco companies or consumers, Selvaraj said the companies should continue paying the tax. "If the service quality was good, then we can talk about taxes. Such matters need to be looked into before we start considering a tax implementation," he said. Selvaraj's views were echoed by Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) president S.M. Mohamed Idris. "In some cases, prepaid users pay more than postpaid users. That shouldn’t be the case as prepaid is supposed to be the cheaper option." He said the validity period of a reload coupon also burdens consumers. "People pay for the coupon and they're not going to get a refund either way. It is unfair to have the remaining balance forfeited by service providers if it exceeds a certain time period."

Users against paying more for service SEVERAL prepaid phone users proposed the six per cent tax on reload coupons be abolished. Another said if the telco companies wanted to implement the tax, they should incorporate it into the top-up cost. The Malay Mail sought the opinions of customers: ● MOHD ARIF, a staff at the Borders bookstore in Times Square, refuses to buy the idea that telco companies could not shoulder the six per cent tax. "I think their profit has been going up, so they have plenty of money. And it's frustrating to have to pay extra money for RM10 top-up." ● JOHN, 28, believes a suspension would not suffice and that tax implementation should be abolished. "I believe a suspension alone would not be enough. The current charges are just fine and convenient." ● A. RANJINI, 24, has a unique suggestion. The junior lawyer from a leading firm in Bangsar said if telco companies implement tax on consumers, they could include tax charges within the

existing prepaid charges itself. "If the top-up is RM10, they could deduct 60 sen from the RM10 itself. That way, people don’t have to pay extra. At the same time, they could find a way to provide more free messages to compensate the public," she said. ● V. VIGNESWARAN, 31, a trainer at a local professional academy, questioned the wisdom of wanting consumers to pay more when service level has not been upped. "Why should we pay more when the service is not improving? If placing the burden on consumers is the best way to solve the problem, then we are no different than a capitalist economy we claim to abhor." ● JEREMY WONG, 22, a linguistics student at Universiti Malaya, offered a straightforward point. "Whatever it is, people are unhappy with the rising cost of living nowadays."

Car part replaced after three months

... but resident is not amused because shopowners and shoppers deprived of parking space for last two years

DANIEL LIM, of Wangsa Permai, is furious the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has failed to enforce its own guidelines. According to him, tables and chairs being placed on car parking lots along Jalan Wangsa 2/5 in Wangsa Permai is a two-year-old issue and, despite numerous complaints to the council, the problem persists. This creates inconvenience to shopowners in the area as well as to residents who wish to go to the grocery shops there. "Some time this year, MPS had, in its full council meeting, announced a maximum of 20 tables and chairs are allowed for each restaurant. But this guideline has never been followed," he says. LIM says the council has failed to take action against the restaurant owners who indiscriminately place the tables and chairs in the parking lots. He also says leftover food is being thrown into the drains, causing a stench and attracting rodents. On May 11, The Malay Mail reported three restaurants have been placing their tables and chairs in parking space in Jalan Wangsa 2/5 for the past two years. In April, the council held a meeting with Wangsa Maju business

owners, chaired by the local councillor and attended by the council's enforcement, licensing and health department officers, to discuss the matter. At the meeting, the council decided to allow the operators to place tables and chairs in the parking lots if the operators applied for and obtained permits from the council. ● MPS public relations director Mohamad Zin Masoad says the council is aware of the problem.

TAKE NOTE 1. The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) is taking action against illegal parking in Taman Melawati by issuing between 150 and 250 summonses a day around Pusat Bandar Taman Melawati. 2. Taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters can be charged under Section 75 (1) of the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (Amendment) Land Public Transport Act 2010. They are liable to a maximum jail term of three years and a fine amounting to not more than RM50,000 if found guilty. 3. City Hall is taking action against vehicles parked along the road and on the curb in Bukit Pantai, as they are deemed a public nuisance. A total of 586 compound notices were issued from January to July.

"MPS has taken action. On Sept 12, our enforcement team raided the place. Three restaurant operators were given the maximum compound of RM250 under Section 461B of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974." Asked why the council did not seize any tables and chairs, Mohamad Zin says it could not do so as there were people having dinner at the time of the raid. “We can't just tell them to go away," he says.

He says the council will continue to monitor the situation and enforcement operations will be carried out from time to time. Meanwhile, LIM says the residents are not asking the restaurant operators to stop their business but to find other ways to accommodate their patrons so that the residents may use the parking space as well. He also hopes the council will keep to it promise to continue to monitor the area.

COLLIN CLIFTON ABAYASUNDRA, of Taman Setapak, sent his Proton Iswara to a Proton service centre in Section 13, Petaling Jaya, on May 30 to have the brakes adjusted. He says the service personnel damaged his car’s handbrake panel. "The panel was in good condition before I sent my car to the centre. I only realised it was damaged after I took my car back." COLLIN went back to the service centre the next day to ask for a replacement and was told it will take at least a week for it to arrive. A few weeks later, COLLIN received a call from the service centre informing him the part had arrived. Shortly afterwards, he was told the centre had ordered the wrong part. "They told me I will have to wait for another week,” he says. A few days later, he was asked to look for the part himself and claim the cost from Proton. "What is the purpose of chasing Proton for the part only to be told to look for it myself?" COLLIN says three months is a long time to wait for the replacement of a part which was damaged by the service centre staff in the first place. "Is this the kind of service Proton provides its customers? ● A SPOKESMAN for Proton Holdings Berhad says COLLIN was asked to go to the service centre immediately after the company had obtained the part. When contacted, COLLIN confirms the handbrake panel was replaced on Aug 13.

Online comments www.mmail.com.my When GPRS takes over from WiFi (Sept 7) ● DATA plan? The victim just wants to access the net using WiFi. That's her right and prerogative. If you want a data plan, that's your right and prerogative. What isn't right is the telco covertly switching from WiFi to GPRS without the consent and knowledge of the customer and making lots of money out of it. Which means they will keep doing it until stopped by law. Yes, it is really sad, everything needs to be controlled by law these days. — Fairgo

● JUST subscribe to the data plan because it's worth it. You can surf anywhere any time. No sweat! — Anonymous Taken for a ride (Sept 12) ● TAXI drivers have always been a major problem in this city. Almost everyday, you see tourists and locals getting turned away by cabbies who refuse to pick you up during peak hours even if the cab is empty. There are also drivers who refuse to use the meter and they charge ridiculously expensive fare. So

it's either you take it or leave it. Some would also take a longer route and the best part is they don't give back your change and if you ask for it they will scold you. Fearing for our safety when we encounter such drivers, most of us choose to let it go without wanting to find fault. People take the cab because the public bus service is inefficient. I hope the authorities will do something about it as not everyone can afford to own a car looking at how expensive everything is these days. All we want

is to travel without facing any difficulties and feeling frustrated. — Frustrated commuter ● WHAT the country needs is a total revamp of the taxi service and star t anew with a proper, strict and clean system. For example, get rid of the corrupt cronies, drivers must go through series of tests, taxis must be well equipped, etc. The current system is like an incurable cancer which needs to be eradicated immediately. Difficult? You bet but let's try. — Anonymous

Unhappy with security (Sept 13) ● SOME criminals pay rent to live in condo units for a few months mainly to observe the movement of security personnel and targeted victims. They often pose as students, expats or professionals, and are good at striking up conversations with their neighbours. This is a well-known modus operandi. Therefore, no matter how much is paid for security/maintenance, do not take security for granted. Keep all doors and grilles locked at all times. — Anonymous

PJ: 'Cat hotel' checkout (Sept 12)

Educate pet lovers, too

I WAS not a pet lover but all that changed two-and-ahalf years ago when I started to adopt a sickly, dirty and depressed little Shih Tzu. I decided to name her Lily. Not long later, I adopted another Shih Tzu that was sent to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) because it was sick. Having read in the media of the abuse of cats at a "pet hotel" in Sungai Buloh, it occurred to me that animal abuse can take place anywhere. In fact, I would like to add that many of these so-called pet lovers also abuse and mistreat their pets. There are many ways to mistreat a pet, for example, by

No need to fuss over English

CHOW TIME: Leaving a cat hungry and dirty is one form of mistreatment

getting rid of it when it is sick or by leaving it at home alone, hungry and dirty. Recently, I witnessed a man who beat up and manhandled his pet. The little poodle was first punched in its stomach and thrown to the floor before it was beaten with a rotan.

Police and department must take action I WOULD like to congratulate the media, including The Malay Mail, for their reports on the abuse of cats at a "pet hotel" in Damansara Damai recently. Animals play an important role in human lives, more so for animals involved in assisted therapy for the disabled and elderly in Malaysia. For that reason, the police and Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) should work closely and take appropriate action on the case. Cats are independent, so much so that even a paralysed person can take care of a cat. Thus, there is no reason for the "pet hotel" owners not to be able to care for them. Our members who are dis-

KL: Findings on maths and science disputed (Sept 9)

abled and elderly are concerned about the matter and it will be a big blow to our work if the case is unresolved To the international community, it will give Malaysia a bad name if nothing is being done about the case. If the authorities don't care enough for the animals, they should still do something about it. At least, think of all the people these animals have helped. Anthony Thanasayan President Petpositive (The Malaysian Animal Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association)

We should not tolerate such behaviour. The authorities need to instil awareness in all pet lovers of their responsibility. The owners must also be educated on the law protecting such animals. Nobody should be allowed to keep a pet if they are unfit or

unable to care for it properly. Enforcement must also be practical and done effectively. The public must know what to do and who to contact the moment they witness an abuse going on in their area. Alice Choo

Get the job done PET lovers must ensure the task force formed to investigate the cat abuse will take action against those responsible. The task force must do its job and ensure its formation is not merely to appease complaints. Our authorities are wellknown for setting something up whenever the subject is hot. But after a while, the tidak

apa attitude sets in and everyone forgets about it until a similar incident happens. We need to know that checks and regulations are put in place so the possibility of anything remotely close to this will never happen again. How animals are being treated will reflect on you. Chris Daly

Also check the petshops THE authorities should start checking petshops, too. If this kind of thing can happen at a so-called "pet hotel", where owners pay to take care of their pets for a short period of time, one wonders what could be brewing at other places where pet animals are being kept. In the past, there were many

cases of pets, which were meant for sale, being kept in cramp conditions. But things quietened down later on. If the authorities conduct their checks now or from time to time, surely they will be be able to unearth something. Moon

KL: Towards better taxi service (Aug 3)

Passengers held to ransom

IT IS difficult to understand why the Road Transport Department, the traffic police or other relevant authorities are not taking action against taxi drivers who fail to use their meters. What is the point of having posters, such as "metered taxi" and "no haggling allowed",

pasted on the side of the taxis if none of the drivers actually practise it or take it seriously? Try and approach taxi drivers at a few of these locations — next to Central Market opposite Pasar Seni, Pudu bus station and KL Sentral — and you will know what is actually happening on the ground and

what the taxi drivers say before you get into their taxis. I think there are just too many taxis in Kuala Lumpur and weeding out a few black sheep will not make any difference. The authorities should immediately go undercover and do the necessary.

I am sure no one wants the rakyat to be fleeced by taxi drivers who break the law. While I understand that taxi drivers are also trying to make a living, this is not the way to do it, by holding passengers to ransom. Anandh

WHY all the fuss about the need to teach mathematics and science in English and blame the government for the decline of English language mastery among our citizens? Don't we all learn the basics of English already, as early as primary school? We then improve our English when we enter the secondary school and brush it up further at the tertiary level. Years back, when I was sent to the US for some job-related training, I had a Japanese instructor who had a poor command of English. Most of the time, he would be using his hands to explain things and to describe what he was talking about. Despite the slight setback, we still understood what he meant. Nowadays, I meet people from all over the world, such as France, Argentina and India. Guess what kind of English they are speaking. In short, I feel there is no need for us to be too

engrossed with this issue. True enough, English is an important language but there are still many countries, even EU nations, which do not even understand English. On the other hand, for us in Malaysia, there are alternatives for parents who want their children to be good in English. Why not send them to private institutions if you can afford it? If not, just be satisfied to learn the language in school. The best way to learn English is to be around its people. If you stay in England, you will be speaking British English and if you stay in the US, you will be able to speak the American slang in no time. I still maintain that the majority does not want the two subjects to be taught in English. Even the Chinese and Tamil schools do not teach the two subjects in English. Anak Perak

Have children's interest at heart I WOULD prefer the government to maintain the teaching of mathematics and science in English rather than in Bahasa Malaysia. However, If it can't be done, at least allow them to be taught in both languages. It is all right for politicians to flip-flop over the decisions ever so often because their children are not the ones affected by it; many send their children to study overseas instead.

For those of us who cannot afford it, we have to make do with whatever is being offered in the country. All I want, and I believe other parents as well, is for the government to have the best interest of the children at heart. I asked my daughter on the matter and she personally wants both subjects to be taught in English. Anak Jati Perak

Shortsighted view I FEEL sorry for the schoolchildren who are victims of this flip-flop policy. Let's get this straight — mathematics and science must be taught in English so these poor children

will have a brighter future in this great big world of ours. Only shortsighted people will insist otherwise. Wong

Firms must pay RM1.2bil to protect themselves from Triple-X domain names AUSTRALIAN businesses must pay more than AU$400 million (RM1.2bil) to a US company to block porn sites from hijacking their brands on the new .xxx domain. And they have less than 45 days to do it. Australian Sex Party Convenor Fiona Patten slammed the .xxx “red light district” as corporate extortion, opposed by both the adult industry and governments worldwide, reports news.au.com. “Effectively, the ICM Registry is selling off other people’s trademarks,” she said. “It’s a pretty brilliant money-making venture.” Triple-X domain names officially went on sale last week for US$199 (RM607). The scheme means unscrupulous buyers can cash in on the reputation of Aussie

businesses by snapping up a domain in their name — for example, harveynorman.xxx. Patten, describing the registry’s control as “quite frightening”, said a private company for the first time could decide the content on an organisation’s website. Australia has more than two million actively trading businesses, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Non-adult businesses have until Oct 28 to apply to prevent their trademark from being registered. Toys R Us is one big name business which will fork out the cash to protect their brand. “We are very aware of this issue and are applying for this application with regards to all of our websites,” a company spokesman said.

Money before kids for Fox ACTRESS Megan Fox wants to have children when her bank balance is right. The Transformers actress, married to actor Brian Austin Green, told The Hollywood Reporter she was keen to start a family soon but only wants to do so when she has enough money to support them. "I want to have children. I've always wanted kids. I have a number in my mind of what amount of money I want in the bank so that I can protect that child's future." The 25-year-old star adds she does not always think of herself as beautiful, despite being named Sexiest Woman in the World by FHM magazine in 2008, because she was not the most attractive girl in school. "I was never the beautiful girl in my school. I mean, I had braces and I dyed my hair orange. I was not the popular girl. I was always the loner. I was drawn to this industry for other reasons." However, she said her job in Hollywood has not always been easy. "Careers sort of go up and down. Not everybody makes a hit every single time. There's no particular technique. Most of the time it's just about survival."

Coordinated Taliban attacks come right after forces lower their guard

THE latest in the series of attacks on Kabul came just when the security forces had lowered their guard. When Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the US, passed off peacefully, the Afghan national army and police went into a "state of inertia", an intelligence officer told the BBC. Nato-led Western forces handed over the security of Kabul to Afghan forces about three months ago. Since then, insurgents have attempted at least three big attacks on the city, of which Afghan security forces managed to prevent just one. This is despite specific and credible intelligence inputs warning of such attacks by a desperate Taliban and remnants of al-Qaeda. "We have been regularly briefing security forces of the

possibility of such attacks," an official at the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Afghanistan's spy agency, said. "These briefings were based on intelligence gathered by our field officers, phone intercepts from and to Pakistan, and surveillance of suspects." Yesterday's attack took place just 50m from the Ring of Steel, a police checkpoint equipped with state-of-the-art security apparatus included CCTV and manned round the clock by heavily armed guards and police sniffer dogs. "That the insurgents managed to strike so close to the ring proves that its steel was not reinforced enough," an Afghan security analyst said on condition of anonymity. Two Afghan intelligence officials told the BBC: ''The attackers had stored weapons

inside the building. They had stored RPGS, heavy machine guns and hand grenades. Some had energy drinks.'' A top counter-terrorism official did not hesitate to blame the Taliban-affiliated

organisation, the Haqqani network, for yesterday's attack. "We have enough evidence at hand to say that the Haqqani network was behind today's attacks. They were behind the truck bomb attack targeting

the US base in Wardak.'' Ta l ib an g u n me n w it h suicide vests and rockets launched spectacular, coordinated attacks in Kabul yesterday, targeting the US embassy and Nato's headquarters and killing at least seven people. Afghan forces had not managed to end the siege after 10 hours and at least 10 heavy explosions with one or two insurgents still holed up in the high-rise building under construction from where the attacks were launched. The stand-off dragged into the night after a day of chaos in the Afghan capital. Interior ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui said four civilians and three police had been killed in the main wave of attacks plus three linked smaller incidents, while 10 civilians and nine police were hurt.

Overweight the new normal

SYDNEY

Survey finds Aussies world leaders in self-deception about fat AUSTRALIANS are in denial about their ever-expanding waistlines and claim to be the most unhappy in the world. The findings came from an international health survey which revealed Australians were among the world's biggest drinkers, coming in just behind their British cousins, reports The Australian. The survey by health insurer BUPA showed that while 64 per cent of Australians said they were in relatively good shape, there were some worrying trends. A measurement of waistlines among the 13,000 people from 12 countries who took part in the survey showed

Australians were world leaders in self-deception when it came to being fat. While one-third of the 1,200 Australians surveyed admitted being too fat, BMI (body mass index) measurements revealed their perception was far from reality, with 60 per cent actually overweight. T he B M I re su lt s put Australia in equal third place with Britain, just behind the US and Saudi Arabia where nearly two-thirds of people were overweight. While more than half of the Australians wanted to shift those extra kilos, 44 per cent spent less than two hours a week working out.

Three-quarters said they drank alcohol, second only to Britain, where 84 per cent enjoyed a tipple, and just over a quarter ate the recommended five serves of fruit and vegetables. Bert Boffa, a practising GP and head of BUPA's medical services, said Australians might not realise they needed to lose weight because they had become used to seeing more overweight people. "If you look at pictures of young children on the beach 30 years ago, they were stick figures and now you go to the beach and kids aren't stick figures any more," Dr Boffa said.

As well as battling the bulge, Australians were also struggling with depression. One-fifth of the Australians surveyed said they suffered from depression, the highest result for any country. China, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia had the next highest levels of depression (16 per cent) followed by the US and Britain on 14 per cent. Thailand had the lowest rates at just seven per cent. The survey also found that Australians were most afraid of getting cancer (33 per cent) followed by dementia (15 per cent) and heart disease (13 per cent).

LONDON

Europe's biggest shopping mall opens

THE Oly mpic site's Westfield Stratford City shopping centre opened yesterday in a deprived area of east London where it will act as the gateway to the 2012 Olympics. The complex, which has risen from derelict wasteland in one of the poorest areas in Britain, houses more than 300 shops, 70 restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, three hotels and Britain's largest casino. Hundreds of people queued outside the £1.45 billion (RM7.2bil) mall before the doors even opened and 100,000 people were expected to turn up on the first day. The giant Stratford site is a cornerstone of the Olympic Park and spectators arriving for next year's Games will have to walk through the shopping centre to reach the sports venues. — AFP

Shy Shila comes of age Former child singer grows up in more ways than one

MOST teenagers would tell you that turning 21 is one of the most-awaited events in their lives. They'd be old enough to make their own decisions (they're even eligible to vote) and young enough to enjoy life. That's exactly the case with Nur Shahila Amir Amzah who just turned 21 in August. Once a child singer known as Shila Tekno who was very much guarded by her parents, Shila's first attempt to break out of parental mould was seen when she took on the One in A Million challenge in 2008. She fought hard along many hopefuls and emerged first runner-up in the end, and that automatically "erased" her previous reputation. From there, Shila never looked back, and is currently one of the most

By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my sought-after singers in the country. Shila is still hungry. As part of her new agenda, she intends to strengthen her position as a singer by moving into songwriting. In short, she is more interested in voicing her own expression.

In an interview with The Malay Mail, Shila admitted she was a shy girl, and had been controlling herself from showing her true colours. "Now I am taking charge of my life, as I am also free from any record label. My first selfwritten single Patah Seribu has been playing on local radio stations and I am now busy promoting it. I wrote it like three years ago but now I have the confidence to share it with the public." Shila apparently has been writing songs since she was 16, but never had the chance to showcase her work. After Monkey Bone, her previous label and management, released her, Shila found a new strength to show her real talent. "Before I joined One In A Million Season 2, I was a very pas-

I was too shy and I had difficulties communicating with people. After the reality show, my direction in music and the choice material were still decided by others at the label. I chose to go with the flow... Now I am free!" she said. "I am very comfortable being independent and things are looking very well. I have to admit that I was a little bit wor-

ried about going out on my own. I thought it would be very hard and difficult, but it seems that everything is going pretty smoothly. Since everything is in her hands now, Shila has decided not to just rely on TV and print publicity. As an alternative, she is learning to self-promote her projects via the new media, including various social networks.

She is also placing her works on YouTube. "I have my own YouTube account and I have been uploading every song that I have recorded there. So most of my fans and followers on YouTube can sample my songs way earlier before

they get played on the radio. I am glad I've been getting good response so far," she said. Shila now considers herself an "indie artiste". She would usually play her guitar and sing new tunes and turn them into songs before going to bed, or immediately after she wakes up. So far, she has uploaded 44 videos on YouTube. "I also get to interact with my followers. We'd share our opinions and I have to say that the feedbacks are amazing!" After Patah Seribu, a ballad, Shila plans to release another of her own composition, Sedar, a fast number. Both songs reflect Shila's new taste and flavour in music, which seems to be leaning towards folk and country.

"My fans seem to like the new material, perhaps, because of the current Miley Cyrus flavour. Now I have a libary of 30 completed songs. A few singers are showing interest to record them too," she said. Once all the singles are released, Shila said she plans to compile all of them into an album, to be released as early as May next year. The singer-songwriter does not discount acting as another creative outlet. "Singing is my passion, but acting is fun, too!" THERE is always a strong connection between fashion and perfumes. Moving side by side in the same stream of global demands, it is one of the major industries that rule the world today. An instinctual designer who has been making big achievements in the fashion industry, Elie Saab, who started out by only having a fashion house, is now ready to gear up for the next level in his career by launching a perfume. After being successful with his couture designs, ready-to-wear and accessories, he is now driven and passionate about his latest addition to his line. Elie Saab Le Parfum, is the commitment to faithfully translate the fashion house's codes — "A fragrance which expresses a radiant feminity and which includes the duality of my world: the light of the Middle East and the modernity of the West." The name is also a manifesto in announcing the arrival of a new way of wearing the Elie Saab signature. Composed as an ode to

light, Elie Saab Le Parfum celebrates the splendour and the brilliance of radiant femininity with a floral solar woody theme. The permanent exchange between flowers and wood is what gives the fragrance such a captivating resonance. From the first note, the soaring brilliance of the orange blossom sets the tone for this olfactory spell. A solar evocation of

armfuls of Mediterranean petals, whose luminosity comes from the rays of the sun at its zenith. While the heart is amplified by the most sumptuous quality of jasmines, an absolute of jasmine grandiflorum and sambac enriches its sensuality with the gentle shading of a very pure 'patchouli heart'. On the other hand, the tone of white flower bouquet is filled out voluptuously by a cedar woody accord, which gives the floral notes a new density. The trail unfurls, infinitely elegant and enveloping, borrowing its addictive notes from rose honey. "I wanted something in simple, straight lines, the rigour of a cube and the sensation of an object made to be held in the hand, but with the density of beautiful objects. And as always, light is the over-aching theme. For me, light is eternal strength," said Elie Saab. As for the bottle, it is designed by Sylvia de France. A luxurious bottle in the great perfumery tradition and at the same

time expresses a resolutely modern aesthetic. The transparency and luminosity of the heavy glass, cut like crystal, is a veritable prism. Sharpened by the designer's high standards and his desire for absolute brilliance, the glass-work was pushed to the extreme of precision to reflects all of Elie Saab's elegance. The case was inspired by the harmony of colours in the Elie Saab boutiques. The chocolate brown lettering which is the colour of wedgewood, stands out on the clarity of textured white surrounded by a thread of gold. Is it definitely a line to reinforce and give new depth to Elie Saab Le Parfum's trail based on four feminine beauty rituals, Perfumed Body Cream, Perfumed Body Lotion, Perfumed Body Wash and Perfumed Deodorant. The product range includes Le Parfum EDP 30ml (RM200), Le Parfum EDP 50ml (RM329), Le Parfum EDP 90ml (RM420), Body lotion 200ml (RM185), Deodorant Spray 150ml (RM140) and Shower Cream 200ml (RM150). Elie Saab Le' Parfum and other products can only be exclusively purchased at Parkson Pavillion, KLCC and Sogo Kuala Lumpur.—By CHE'AZ

In praise of palliative care

Homecare: A nurse from Hospis Malaysia with a patient at his home

About Hospis Malaysia Hospis Malaysia provides professional palliative care to those living with life-limiting illnesses which typically include cancers, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), organ failure or progressive neurological conditions. Palliative care works alongside curative treatment, but it correspondingly increases as curative measures decline. The heart of its service lies in its philosophy — which is to offer palliative care that effectively addresses the various needs of patients and their families, and in the process, ensures comfort and dignity for those our own minds. We are frightened of death. But, let’s face it, we all die. In the UK, we are fond of quoting Benjamin Franklin who famously stated that “In this world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes”! None of us like to think about death, especially our own, but perhaps it’s time that we faced up to the elemental fact that, as one wit noted, “The global death rate remains constant at 100%”! Death is a normal process in that it happens to us all. So it makes sense to prepare for it if we can. But that is not to say that it is an easy subject to discuss. My mother was a remarkable woman and faced her final illness with great dignity and bravery, but even she was scared when the word “hospice” was first mentioned. She associated it, as many people do, solely with the end of life. As the months went by, however, and the treatment she received (to drain fluid from her

living with the illness, as well as the best quality of life for them and for their loved ones. Hospis Malaysia’s services include a homecare programme, daycare for patients and loan of medical equipment. All the services and facilities are offered free-of-charge. The medical team of palliative care doctors and nurses make approximately 1,000 home visits a month. Hospis Malaysia needs about RM3 million to fund the operating expenses annually. More information can be found on http://www.hospismalaysia.org stomach) was repeated many times, she came to regard her two-to-three-day stays in the hospice much as one would regard a stay in a nice hotel! As well as the medical attention, she enjoyed complementary therapies such as massages and aromatherapy. There were daycare sessions to attend and counsellors and a chaplain on hand if she wanted to speak to them. But, in-between her visits to the hospice, my mother’s life continued as normal, running the house, caring for my father and seeing family and friends. In short, the care my mother received was life-enhancing; it enabled her to continue living in the way she wished to do. Indeed, she told me, some months before her death, that she was truly enjoying every minute of her life. Part at least of that enjoyment was due to the holistic care she received both at home from her lovely, caring palliative care nurse and in the hospice from the wonderful staff there. Just weeks

before her death she was well enough to visit us for a few days in Switzerland. She walked a great deal, laughed a lot and generally exhausted us all! And, when the time came and she was told that death was likely to be very near, she was given constant emotional help and support as well as the medical intervention she needed to control her pain and keep her physically comfortable. We, her family, were offered support and counselling both before and after her death and encouraged to ask any questions we wanted. Here in Malaysia, palliative care is impressively advanced given its relatively recent emergence as a recognised medical specialisation but, as Dr Ednin Hamzah, the visionary Chief Executive of Hospis Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, is keen to point out, there are formidable challenges to be overcome if the huge and ever-increasing needs of local communities are to be met. He told me: “Malaysian healthcare needs a paradigm shift both in terms of planning services as well as teaching doctors and nurses, all in the realisation that at the root of all illness, is a patient and a family that simply wants to have their fears understood, their suffering to be empathised, their words listened to and their lives to have meaning. Palliative care can do this”. I was privileged and moved to see for myself the way that Dr Ednin and his nurse put these words into practice when I joined them recently to visit two hospice patients (from widely different socio-economic backgrounds) in their respective homes. As well as providing medication and advising on physical treatments, they spent a great deal of time just getting to know the gentlemen concerned. At no point did they

appear to be in a rush. Dr Ednin gave the first patient plenty of time to ask questions but did not force him to say anything; he asked for permission of the second before leaving the room to speak to his family; when speaking to the families he was gentle but did not avoid “difficult” questions and was honest when he didn’t know an answer. In short, both patients and their families were treated with great respect; as “whole” people who were gravely afflicted and affected by illness but not defined by it. Whether a person with a life-limiting illness dies in a hospice (as was the case with my mother) or at home, the aim remains the same: to give value and quality to that individual’s life, however long or short it is, by controlling the symptoms of their illness — especially pain — in a way which neither hastens nor postpones death. By the time my mother died, she knew all the staff at the

hospice well and thought of them as her friends. What better way to die than peacefully, painlessly, and surrounded by friends and family? Such a death is possible for many more of us than we realise. But we need to think about it. Now. Hospis Malaysia will be holding its biannual Voices for Hospices gala fundraising event on Oct 9 at the JW Marriott Hotel for the fourth time since 2005. Themed ‘Many Lives, Many Voices’, the event will be held to help funds for the organisation as well as to raise awareness and understanding of the medical, social, practical and spiritual needs of people living with a life-limiting illness, and their families. Proceeds from the charity dinner will help Hospis Malaysia continue to support and develop hospice and palliative care services, to uphold the dignity and quality of life of those affected by a life-limiting illness.

sudoku

how to play Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

Yesterday'S solution

OCT 8 marks ‘World Hospice and Palliative Care Day’. Gail Featherstone, wife of the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, writes a very personal view of its benefits. "My mother died in her local hospice just before midnight on Nov 11, 2005. Peacefully. Without pain. I was holding her hand. She knew she was dying and had written a letter for us to read after her death in which she told us all she loved us, expressed gratitude for a “happy life”, and gave instructions for her funeral. Writing these words has made me cry. The grief of losing her is still there. But it is the fact of her death rather than the manner of it which saddens me. I am grateful for the way she died. For hers was what used to be called a “good death”. And it’s the kind of death I would wish for everyone, myself included. So why doesn’t this happen more often? I would argue that it can, if we only paid more attention to and spent more money on hospices and palliative care. What is palliative care? The World Health Organisation defines it as: ”An approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with lifethreatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual”. Terminal cancer is not the only such disease: the ageing populations of the world are seeing an increase in the incidence of Alzheimer’s and dementia, for example. In all, they are estimated to be around 100 million people annually who would benefit from hospice and palliative care. Less than eight per cent of those in need actually have access to it. It’s heartbreaking to think of the pain and grief those statistics represent. Yet it doesn’t have to be this way… End-of-life care services are often, though not exclusively, centred in hospices. I’m proud to say that the modern hospice movement is at its most developed in my own country, the UK, spearheaded as it was by Dame Cecily Saunders, the founder, in 1967, of St Christopher’s Hospice in southeast London. Her mantra was: “You matter because you are you, and you matter to the last moment of your life”. Yet, even in the UK, the access to hospice care is patchy and mostly privately funded via charitable giving. Palliative care in general and hospices, in particular, remain taboo subjects for many. Part of the problem lies in

SUBANG: GOLF/ 100PLUS Malaysian Open

Jeremiah leads Malaysian charge JEREMIAH KIM (pic) carded a three-under 69 to take the lead in the Boys' U-18 and overall categories at the 100PLUS Malaysian Open at the Saujana Golf and Country Club yesterday. Jeremiah is three ahead of Indonesia's Joshua Andrew Wirawan in the overall competition and six strokes ahead of Kow Eiki in the Boys' U-18 division. Low Khai Jei, who won Malaysia's first ever individual title at last week's Lion City Cup, carded a four-over 76 to place fifth in the U-16 division and eighth overall. The 15-year-old Khai Jei defeated Thailand's Chanchok D e j p i r at a n a m m o n g k o l a week ago to win the gold medal at the 51st Southeast Asia Amateur Championship. He also helped Malaysia win the silver medal in the team event. In the girls' competition, Dottie Ardina of the Philippines fired a sizzling five-under 67 to lead the girls' U-18 and overall competition. Malaysia's Nur Durriyah Damian is five strokes behind in the overall competition. "I was on a high after winning in Hong Kong last week and thought I would be able to continue my fine form on my home ground," said Khai Jei. "I had problems with my irons today and I hope to sort it out tomorrow. I know the course well. I'm confident of posting a good score in the second round. "It won't be easy to make up the deficit but I reckon I can close the gap over the next two days. "The last two overall champions have come from the U-16 division so it is obviously a difficult group to be in. I just have to keep my head down and try to get as many birdies as possible over the next two days." Dottie, meanwhile, said she is confident of winning the title after a confident round. "I like the course. It is

challenging but I think it suits my game quite well," said the 17-year-old who hails from Laguna, a suburb 40-minutes from Manila. "I think I have a good lead and need to remain focus if I'm to clinch the title." In the team event, India lead with a score of 150, two ahead of Malaysia with Indonesia third on 158.

KL coach Razip Ismail had a satisfied look on his face. The city team were robbed of two penalties, which could have turned their fortunes for the better, and played on a waterlogged pitch due to the rain but Razip was happy with the result against Selangor. KL continued their unbeaten run in the Malaysia Cup after holding the Red Giants to a goalless draw in a Group D match at Selayang Stadium yesterday. "There were doubtful decisions and our strikers failed to score when it mattered the most but I'm generally pleased with the team," said Razip. "We rose to the occasion in the second-half. For me, securing one point is good enough." Both KL and Selangor missed several sitters throughout the

match. KL had goalkeeper Norazlan Razali to thank for his outstanding performance as he frustrated the Selangor forwards on many occasions. Selangor's Rudie Ramli was in disbelief after his shot at goal was stopped by Norazlan while Selangor captain Amri Yahyah's free-kick rattled the post, leaving the team frustrated in the first-half. KL too could have enjoyed a goal when striker Yong Kuong Yong was left with only Selangor goalkeeper G. Jeevananthan to beat but shot wide instead. KL were having problems in the engine room with See Kok Luen, especially, failing to shine. Kok Luen later made way for Azwan Malek, who

provided better support for his teammates up front. "Unlike Selangor, our midfield was a little shaky. They were clearly better in that department. But Azwan provided more options. I'm happy with his progress although he only played some 15 minutes." KL, despite their unconvincing run prior to the start of the Malaysia Cup, now tops the table with seven points. Trailing close behind is T-Team as the Terengganu — based club blasted four goals against Police. Razip and his charges are scheduled to meet Police on Saturday, and the coach has warned his players not to take their opponents lightly. "You may say Police are the whipping boys of the group but every team would want to beat KL. They will play extra hard

Olympic Council leaves everyone guessing

WERE the Olympic Council of Malaysia's (OCM) mediation process a mere charade? That was the question on everyone's lips after OCM claimed to have "successfully" played mediator between independent doubles pair Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) when the signs suggest otherwise. BAM secretary Ng Chin Chai walked out, gesturing his lips were sealed while the players were advised by OCM's alternative dispute resolution (ADR) committee chairman Datuk Roy Rajasingam against speaking to the Press. The body language of the pair and Chin Chai also told a different story and contradicted what Rajasingam had to say. "They have reached a gentleman's agreement and some minor issues will be sorted by the parties as time goes on," said Rajasingam.

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

"BAM will give all assistance in terms of entries for international tournaments." Wasn't the key issue of dispute the selection criteria for major tournaments like the World Championships and Olympics? When pressed for an answer regarding the above, Rajasingam merely repeated himself. The saga was triggered when BAM dropped the pair in favour of lower ranked Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thien How from the World Championships in London last month. The KL Racquet Club (KLRC) duo are looking for clarification on the selection criteria on representing Malaysia in major meets. The duo are looking forward to qualifying for the London Olympics next year

and do not want their efforts to be in vain. Besides clarification on the selection criteria, Teik Chai-Bin Shen also want to be able to spar with BAM's players. They also seek compensation in the form of tournament sponsorships and an apology from the national body. It was learnt that none of the issues brought up by the players were actually solved. This left many, members of the Press included, wondering as to why OCM claimed the mediation was a success. BAM have indeed granted their sparring request but insist that the pair's coaches cannot be present. They also refuse to give an apology nor grant tournament sponsorships. Compensation in the form of tournament sponsorship is nothing new. BAM funded Roslin Hashim, who was also an independent player, for all

the remaining Super Series tournaments throughout the year after they accidentally omitted his name from two Super Series tournaments in May 2007. Teik Chai-Bin Shen now have four options. The cheapest would be to seek an arbitration or air their grouses to the Sports Commissioner, hoping to seek a redress by Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek under the Sports Development Act 1997. Alternatively, the duo can opt for a civil suit against BAM or take the matter to the Court of Arbitration Sports (CAS) in Switzerland. However, this would be costly and time consuming. Teik Chai-Bin Shen are expected to give a Press statement announcing their next move at the New Vision Badminton Centre in Petaling Jaya today.

Ignorance is not bliss Malaysia's sports heroes deserve better place in history

THERE has been so much talk about history lately, what really transpired and if it has been altered to serve a political agenda. China and Japan, despite decades of research, have differing views of the SinoJapanese relations, especially events surrounding World War II. Closer to home, not many people know the true history of Ampang despite it being discovered slightly over a centur y ago. The two rows of shophouses in Pekan Lama Ampang are the only artifacts left in a small but bustling town that once thrived on the tin and rubber industries. There are those who treasure history. Two World Wars, major recessions and

the on-going economy crisis in Europe has done little to discourage Catalans from completing the Sagrada Familia. Construction of the church, located in the heart of the city, began on March 19, 1882. Modernisation grows rapidly in Barcelona but it blends with the historical buildings. Administrators did not tear down the Sagrada Familia but built an underground tunnel of Spain’s high speed railway — although some

claim it could disrupt the building's stability. The fact remains that history still has a place in modern Barcelona. A reminder to the people what the past was like. It’s the same with other major cities in the world including London, Paris and Delhi. Sadly, we don’t see it here. Old buildings are not appreciated while legends are easily forgotten. The nation lost three sporting heroes in the span of three

PENANG: KARATE

days. Badminton supremo Datuk David Choong died on Saturday while double internationals M. Joseph and Peter Van Huizen passed away on Sunday and Monday, respectively. Little was mentioned about them. Reason? There was hardly any facts on them to begin with. Word of their demise was passed around by former journalists and friends. Those who wrote about them had to rely on vivid memories of family members and former teammates. Sporting organisations do not have a proper archive of their history. The FA of Malaysia do not have a proper library or archive of players and matches. The same goes with other nation-

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was spot on to say the younger generation do not understand history and the origin of the nation. In Dr Mahathir’s words, ''we forget easily''. If this carries on, the contributions of our legends will soon be forgotten. As aut h or R o b e r t A . Heinlein penned in his 1973 book Time Enough for Love; "A generation which ignores history has no past — and no future". ● Haresh Deol is a Senior Journalist with The Malay Mail. NETBALL FIGHTER'S SPIRIT: Chee Wei hopes to do well in his inaugural Sea Games in Jakarta and extend his good form

NATIONAL karate exponent Lee Chee Wei hopes to continue his ''purple patch'' when he makes his debut at the Jakarta Sea Games later this year. A streak of recent successes in karate, culminating in his admission into Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), has given him the much-needed impetus to perform well in sports and education. Chee Wei, who competes in the kata (demonstration) category, won gold in the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf ) Junior Championship and Singapore Karate International Open this year. Efforts to document our sports history was also seen through the Encyclopedia of Malaysia: Spor ts and Recreation. A noble initiative but we still hunger for more information. Wouldn’t it be timely for associations to start compiling information of their past athletes and documenting it in a public domain. UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA (USM) Penang International Netball Fiesta will celebrate their 21st anniversary on Oct 22-23 at their campus. The festival's significance lies with the fact that the event dates back from two decades ago and there are also competitions for men — a main draw as netball is considered a female domain. Foreign and local teams will vie for honours in eight categories with cash prizes of RM24,000 to be shared and medals awarded to the semifinalists and winners of each category. Organising competition committee chairperson Siti Nur Elainee Arifin (pic) said the deadline for

entries is Oct 8 but she is confident there will be an increase in the number of teams participating. "To date, we have received c on f i r m at i on f rom 1 5 teams, of which 10 are from Sri Lanka while the

NEW YORK: TENNIS

WILANDER

THE good news for Roger Federer, according to former world No 1 Mats Wilander, is that he hasn't lost any of his skill and is playing as good as ever. But the bad news for the Swiss maestro is that the opposition has improved as well and he needs to find a way past them to add to his record collection of 16 Grand Slams. "There's no question he's better now than he's ever been," Wilander said in an interview. "He's just not winning." Wilander said Federer's biggest problem was that his two greatest rivals, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal,

Nadal vows to turn the tables

Federer better than ever but so are rivals, says Wilander were now playing at a much high level than the rivals he was beating when he was scooping up Grand Slams at will. "There's no question that Novak Djokovic is way better than the opposition he had four, five years ago," said the Swede. Federer won the last of his titles at the 2010 Australian Open. This year was the first time he had gone through a season without winning at least one Grand Slam title since he broke through to capture his first in 2003. But Wilander, who won seven Majors between 1982 and 1988, said the 30-year-old

Swiss had shown he was anything but a spent force, reaching the final at the French Open this year and coming with one point of beating eventual champion Djokovic at the US Open, which ended yesterday. The pair slugged it out over five gripping sets in an enthralling match that could have gone either way. Federer had two match points in the fifth set but Djokovic survived them both and won the decider 7-5. "Is Roger the best of all time? RAFAEL NADAL was sent reeling to another bruising defeat by Novak Djokovic yesterday, but insisted his US Open disappointment had only strengthened his resolve to reassert himself against the Serb. "I go back home knowing that I am on the way," said Nadal, who beat Djokovic in the 2010 final at Flushing Meadows to complete a career Grand Slam but has had no answer to Djokovic's transcendent

Fiery contest

Scots to employ physical approach to down Georgia SCOTLAND head coach Andy Robinson has opted to fight fire with fire in their Pool B clash with Georgia at Rugby Park Stadium today and called for his team to get physical. Robinson named a team showing 11 changes to the XV who began last Saturday's unconvincing 34-24 win over Romania, with Allan Jacobsen, Kelly Brown, Sean Lamont and Max Evans the only players retained. Ror y L awson will captain the side, who have his Gloucester teammates Scott Lawson, Jim Hamilton and Alasdair Strokosch in a pack selected to front up to a Georgia side deemed to possess more accomplished forwards than Romania. "Right across the board there's real physicality about the side — we need to bring that physicality out in the way we play," said Robinson. "One of the things we allowed Romania to do was get forward through their maul, through their scrum, but also through their pick and go and we've got to be able to stop that." Robinson and his management team decided not to

deviate from the prior selection plan despite the chaos caused by Romania's pack, the head coach insisting the scale of the changes was dictated by the proximity of the matches, rather than the performance last Saturday. The Scots are out for their fifth successive victory against Georgia, who are coached by former Scotland boss Richie Dixon and have won their last eight fixtures. They even came close to a shock defeat by Ireland in the last tournament four years ago. "We see this Georgia game

as a really tough game. We expect it to be harder than the Romania game," said Robinson. "They want a place at the Six Nations table and they see this as an opportunity to put their hand up for that. This is a huge game for them in terms of being on the global stage and if you think back to 2007 they got very close." Georgia head coach Dixon described his "warrior" squad as "made for rugby". "Genetically, I think they are made for rugby. They are warrior-type players. The people

are fully behind this team. They realise that rugby has become a window to the world for Georgia," he said. Dixon remains a patriotic Scotsman, but he is looking forward to taking charge of Georgia in a World Cup following a run of eight successive wins. "In today's professional world, you can't change your heart. Obviously, I'm a Scottish boy but, when I'm with the Georgian boys, I'm 100 per cent with them. It will be another international game."

Byrnes can't wait to be a Bear AUSTRALIAN-BORN lock Adam Byrnes is set to make his international debut for Russia. And at the age of 30, Byrnes, who harboured hopes of becoming a Wallaby, may instead get the chance to play against his country of birth. "I understand that my case is really unique," said Byrnes, who plays for the Melbourne Rebels. "In JanuaryFebruary this year, I read an article in an international rugby magazine about Russia's first time at the Rugby World Cup. One of the coaches was asking for players with Russian background to be able to join the team. "My teammate gave me an email address of Russia’s Welsh forwards' coach Kingsley Jones and I wrote a letter to him explaining who I am and saying that I'd be pleased to play for the Bears. "I asked him, 'Do you want me?', and he replied within hours, 'Yes, we do'. "I'm Russian from my mother’s side. She left the USSR for Australia after World War II with her parents and sisters. "There is a strong Russian community in Australia. The nation which is made of immigrants embraces various cultures, so I can’t say I don’t

feel Russian because I was born in Australia. "Although I forgot the language when I went to school, I still hear much of it when we celebrate Russian Christmas and Easter. These holidays are big events that bring all our family together twice a year. "It has always been my goal to be a Wallaby but getting a chance to represent Russia at the Rugby World Cup is a pleasant surprise I really appreciate. I feel proud and I wish to help Russian rugby to become a professional organisation capable of competing with international rugby giants in the future." The chance to play Australia in their last Pool C game is something special for the newly-born Bear. "It is fantastic to face Australia in the competition. There are so many guys among the Wallabies who I played with or against. And if I oppose Melbourne Rebels teammate Nick Phipps on the pitch, that would be nice for the club." Byrnes has been named in the Russia squad for the match against the United States in a Pool C clash tomorrow. The Bears are also making their debut in the tournament.

NEW ZEALAND could be without playmaker and ace goal-kicker Dan Carter (left) for Friday's Pool A clash against Japan in Hamilton. The Crusaders No 10 took a blow to his back in the All Blacks' opener against Tonga in Auckland last Friday and assistant coach Steve Hansen revealed that Carter could sit out the game with the Japanese. "He got hit in the back, so he's a bit sore. We'll just have to see how he goes," said Hansen. He also hinted that centre Conrad Smith and fullback Mils Muliaina, both of whom were dropped for the win over the Tongans, could earn recalls on Friday. Smith lost his place in midfield to Sonny Bill Williams, while Israel Dagg was surprisingly entrusted with the No 15 jersey ahead of Muliaina. "You might see Smith come back into the centres. I don't think too many people are going to see that as a negative," said Hansen. "You might see someone like Mils get a start so we can sort out which of those two (Muliaina and Dagg) is playing the best to go through the rest of the tournament." There have been several calls within the New Zealand media for head coach Graham Henry to resist any temptation to rotate his squad and name his strongest side on Friday. Hansen is expecting some changes but he suspects that they will be kept to a minimum. "We've had one game; we've selected a side who we believe was pretty much the strongest side we could have picked for that particular game (against Tonga) and the core of that side you'll see on Friday," he said. "But in saying that, it is a long tournament and you're going to need to bring people in and out of it on occasion, but not wholesale changes. "Ever yone out there is probably feeling a little bit of pressure because it's been 24 years since we had Webb Ellis (the World Cup trophy). We're not worried about what other people are saying. Our job is to make sure that we stay to the plan we've elected and we're confident our plan is the right one. You know, we're only one game into it and you just need to trust us that we'll get this task done."

But as they were speaking to him in Newcastle city centre, the car was allegedly driven off. Two men were later arrested on suspicion of taking the vehicle without consent. Ranger, who posted a picture of himself with the car on Twitter shortly before the incident, was bailed pending the result of a blood test.

Wenger identifies financial elite ARSENE WENGER has spoken of his fear that Arsenal are being left behind by a financially elite cartel led by Barcelona and Real Madrid. Arsenal's manager also name-checked Chelsea and Manchester City as part of a group of clubs whose spending power has separated them from the rest of Europe's sides. "I believe that this season, I see two teams that are above the rest — Real Madrid and Barcelona — and the rest have to catch up during the season," Wenger said. Modest Devils Ferguson plays down United hype

SIR ALEX FERGUSON sought to dampen down some of the excitement surrounding his Manchester United team this morning, as they prepared to open their Champions League campaign against Benfica. United tackle the Portuguese giants in their Group C opener at the iconic Estadio da Luz tomorrow (2.45am), having begun the defence of their Premier League title in scintillating fashion. Four straight wins have put them top of the table and their haul of 18 goals is the highest tally after four English top-flight games since Wolverhampton Wanderers plundered 20 in as many matches in 1947. Expectations have soared following the 8-2 annihilation of title rivals Arsenal last month and Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Bolton Wanderers, but Ferguson believes it is too early to assess his team's worth. "We've only played four games," he said at his prematch Press conference this morning. "The quality of our play has been superb, but it's a young squad. "Obviously there'll be a time when their form tapers off, so I hope the experienced players will then step in and add to the great start to the season we have had. "You can't judge a team after four games. But hopefully they'll become one of our best teams." Ferguson confirmed that centreback Rio Ferdinand had been left behind in Manchester as a "precaution" ahead of Sunday's visit of Chelsea in the Premier League. The Scot also revealed that captain Nemanja Vidic was around "two weeks" away from making a comeback after his calf injury, but said he had faith in his squad's ability to compete on several fronts. "The season really starts when the Champions L e ague comes around,"

With Ferdinand and Vidic out, Ferguson will hope that Jonny Evans is able to line up alongside Phil Jones at centreback despite having sustained a hip injury in the game at Bolton. Napoli approaching opener as a final NA P OL I are t re at i ng tomorrow's opener against Manchester City as a final and are forgetting about their opponents' spending power. The Italian side travel to England as underdogs in a Group A that also features Bayern Munich and Villarreal, but coach Walter Mazzarri refused to be daunted and said Napoli could draw much encouragement from their Europa League outings last season. "I will tell my players not to focus too much on the other side and how strong they are," Mazzarri said. "Statistically we are the least favourite in this group, but I do not think that is very important. "All we need to do is keep focused, keep calm and think about the competition one game at a time. Tomorrow

we will play Manchester City and we will play it as if it was a final, after we have done our best we will see where we are at." Napoli, who last appeared in European Cup competition 21 years ago, only returned to Serie A four seasons ago and have rapidly grown into title contenders despite modest means. Manchester City, meanwhile, have invested hundreds of millions of pounds on players in the past three years, prompting reporters to ask Mazzarri whether he felt like it was a bit of a David and Goliath contest. "It's either us being very clever for the approach that we have or the other side being a little bit foolish because if we manage to do what we are doing in the way that we do it then people can see it does

pay off," Mazzarri said. "It's only a matter of getting in the right mindset and looking after and nurturing our group of players. Last year, Manchester City finished third in the Premier League and so did Napoli in Serie A, so we can see the results were there." The Italian side got a taste of life on the big stage by playing a friendly against European champions Barcelona last month and despite losing 5-0, it was valuable experience. "It was quite useful to have a feel of the atmosphere, to take in the environment," Mazzarri said. Napoli reached the round of 32 in the continent's second tier competition last season, losing to Villarreal. City were also in the Europa League last term, falling at the last-16 stage. — Reuters

Mata, Luiz strike as Chelsea down Leverkusen

CHELSEA made a winning start to their latest bid for Champions League glory this morning as second-half goals from David Luiz and Juan Mata secured a 2-0 win over Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Brazil international Luiz fired the English Premier League giants ahead with a 67 minute goal, curling a low shot beyond Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno after a neat lay-off from Fernando Torres. Torres then set up Chelsea's second of the night deep in injury time, accelerating clear of the Leverkusen defence before unselfishly cutting back for Mata who sidefooted home into an open goal. With one eye on Sunday's looming domestic battle with Manchester United, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas had taken a gamble by leaving Frank Lampard on the bench and omitting captain John Terry altogether. Until Luiz's superb strike, however, it looked as if VillasBoas's men were in for a frustrating evening against their compact German opponents, for whom former Chelsea star Michael Ballack started in midfield.

THANK YOU, AMIGO: Mata (right) celebrates the second goal with Torres — AFP photo

With Chelsea's old guards missing, the stage was set for Torres to spearhead a pacy front three featuring Daniel Sturridge and Mata on the flanks. Torres had created headlines

earlier in the week when he had appeared to blame his failure to shine at Stamford Bridge since his record £50 million (RM241.1m) move from Liverpool on a Chelsea attack which he branded

"old and slow''. Chelsea had served notice of their attacking intent within minutes of kick-off, when the pacy Sturridge went speeding down the right flank and crossed for Torres, whose shot flew just over. At the other end, Chelsea suffered an early scare when Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes headed home from a corner only for French referee Stephane Lannoy to disallow the effort for pushing. Chelsea had a goal disallowed only moments later. Mata ghosted down the left wing and crossed for Torres who flicked on to Raul Meireles who steered the ball home only to be adjudged offside. Torres' energetic start then saw him fall foul of Lannoy, who booked the Spaniard for a clumsy tackle on Rolfes in the ninth minute. Torres came agonisingly close to giving Chelsea the lead a minute later, surging through the visitors' defence only to be denied by the leg of Leno. It was the closest Chelsea came to scoring in the opening 45 minutes. Despite relentless pressure, they were often let down by a lack of precision in the final third.

In fact, Torres was outshone by the in-form Sturridge, who forced a good save from Leno on 32 minutes when he unleashed a wicked shot from 20 yards that the Leverkusen keeper batted away for a corner. Shortly before half-time, Sturridge let fly again, sending a rasping effort swerving just wide from near the edge of the area. Chelsea continued to dominate in the second-half but had goalkeeper Petr Cech to thank for a fine block on 57 minutes to deny Ballack. On 64 minutes, Sturridge saw his low shot clawed away by Leno as Chelsea went close again. Villas-Boas then replaced the young attacker with Nicolas Anelka while introducing Lampard for Meireles. Within three minutes, Chelsea had scored the decisive goal. Luiz picked the ball up on halfway and surged forward before releasing Florent Malouda. The Frenchman's centre found Torres, who teed up the charging Luiz to score. In stoppage time, Torres set up the knockout blow, bursting clear down the right to set up Mata's strike. — AFP

DORTMUND'S Croatia midfielder Ivan Perisic came off the bench to score a late equaliser which grabbed the hosts a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in their opening Champions League clash this morning. After Arsenal captain Robin van Persie's first-half strike had put the Gunners ahead, the 22-year-old Perisic came off the bench with 20 minutes left to finally convert one of Dortmund's string of chances. Despite passionate support at their 65,000 sold-out Signal Iduna Park stadium, it was not until the 88th minute that the hosts finally broke the visitors' defence. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was banished to the stands as he serves the first of his two-match Champions League ban and his side defended doggedly as the hosts had 22 chances compared with the Gunners' eight. Dortmund are back in the Champions League after an absence of nine years while Arsenal are competing in the tournament for the 14th successive season, and the differ-

ence in experience showed. Wenger named three new signings in his starting lineup in Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who did not look comfortable, and Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta with Israel's Yossi Benayoun playing just behind van Persie. Surprisingly, Russia midfielder Andrey Arshavin, who scored in the 1-0 Premier League win over Swansea last Saturday, started on the bench. Arsenal have been plagued

by injuries at the start of the season and their 8-2 hammering at Manchester United a fortnight ago had dented confidence. Dortmund's teen German star Mario Goetze came back into midfield after being suspended for the Hertha defeat and put in some slick passing. Despite dominating the first 25 minutes, Dortmund found themselves 1-0 down at halftime as Arsenal snuffed out the hosts early chances and then converted one of theirs.

In the first 11 minutes alone, Dortmund's Japan star Shinji Kagawa fired over with only the goalkeeper to beat and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski had a chance cleared off the line. Arsenal began to assert themselves and Van Persie had a good chance saved when he beat the defence on 33 minutes. But there was no mistake when his second clear chance arrived as Theo Walcott's pass split the defence. The Dutchman picked his spot perfectly to drill his shot past goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller on 42 minutes. The hosts' luck refused to improve over the break and with an hour gone, they had racked up 10 attempts on goal without testing Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before Perisic spared their blushes. JUVENTUS are set to test Manchester City's resolve with a January bid for Aleksandar Kolarov (pic). The Serbia fullback has struggled to maintain a regular spot in the club's starting line-up due to injury problems since his arrival from Lazio in the summer of 2010. City purchased leftback Gael Clichy in the summer and the former Arsenal man looks set to be first choice, having featured in all but one of the side's fixtures so far. Juve were previously linked with Kolarov before City swooped in to complete a deal for the 25-year-old Bulgarian.

Van der Vaart peeved TOTTENHAM midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is "annoyed" at having been left out of the club's Europa League squad by manager Harry Redknapp. Initial tests seemed to confirm that the Dutch international had torn his hamstring, and Redknapp expected to lose his playmaker for up to six weeks. This prompted the manager to leave van der Vaart out of the squad. But van der Vaart said he was not consulted over the move. "I still think it's a peculiar situation," he said on his blog. "Spurs could at least have consulted me. Anyway it's up to the point of no return. I will be focusing on the game against Liverpool."

"The Champions League final doesn't still hurt," said the 30-year-old. "It was disappointing because we lost the final but it wasn't a massive failure. You have to accept they were good. It is up to us to be better."

BARCELONA: FOOTBALL/ CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Brazilian earns Milan draw at Barcelona

THIAGO SILVA powered home a header in the second minute of stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw for AC Milan at holders Barcelona in the heavyweight pair’s Group H opener this morning. A sultry Nou Camp was stunned into near-silence after only 24 seconds when Alexandre Pato left the Barca defence for dead and beat goalkeeper Victor Valdes for the fifth-fastest goal in Europe’s elite club competition, according to Opta. However, World Playerof-the-Year Lionel Messi, Champions League topscorer the past three seasons, created an equaliser for Pedro in the 36th minute with a brilliant weaving run and cross and David Villa netted a superb long-range free-kick five minutes after the break. A dominant Barca were apparently cruising towards victory when Brazil defender Silva leapt above the home defence and crashed a 92ndminute header past Valdes. Barca fullback Daniel Alves told Spanish television: “When they score an equaliser in the last minute you are left looking a bit stupid. We have to pick ourselves up and keep working.”

With captain Carles Puyol only just declared fit after knee surgery and his partner in central defence Gerard Pique sidelined, Barca coach “Pep” Guardiola deployed midfielders Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano at the back. The decision immediately appeared to have backfired when pacy Brazil striker Pato picked the ball up near the halfway line, played it into a huge space behind the defence and raced clear to score. Straight away, Barca created a slew of chances for an equaliser before Messi, after striking a curling free-kick against the post, once again came to the rescue. The Argentine forward danced through the Milan defence to the byline and squared for Pedro to rifle home with goalkeeper Christian Abbiati stranded. Barca had recovered their customary domination of possession and a goal had long been coming when Villa stepped up to crack the ball into the top corner from 30 metres. Meanwhile, Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta will be out for around four

weeks after he damaged a leg muscle during the match. Iniesta was replaced by Spain teammate Cesc Fabregas shortly before half-time. “Tests have confirmed that

the player suffered damage to the femoral biceps of the left leg,” the La Liga club said in a statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.cat). “The approximate time he

will be out of action is four weeks,” they added. Iniesta joins injured pair Gerard Pique and Alexis Sanchez on the sidelines. — Reuters

unhappy: Carvalho given a 12-month ban for walking out of the national squad’s training camp

PORTUGAL defender Ricardo Carvalho has been banned from the national side for one year for abandoning the team’s training camp without explanation last month, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said this morning. The FPF said in a statement that they applied a regulation that allows a player to be banned for up to 24 months. “Given the player’s sporting past, the FPF has decided to ban Ricardo Carvalho

from the national side for one year and make him ineligible for any premiums resulting from a possible qualification for Euro 2012,” the FPF added. Real Madrid central defender Carvalho, 33, left Portugal’s training camp for the Euro 2012 qualifier away against Cyprus on Aug 31 without an explanation, but later said he was retiring from international football as he had been disrespected at the camp. He made his debut for

Portugal under Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2003 and went on to earn 75 caps. He played in the 2004 and 2008 European Championships as well as the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. At club level, the reliable defender won several titles for Porto and Chelsea before moving to Real Madrid last summer. Portugal are top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group H level with Denmark and Norway on 13 points. — Reuters
