Foreign flights may cost RM100 more in airport tax hike and ‘anti-terrorism’ fee

INTERNATIONAL travellers may find themselves paying RM35 more for ‘security’ on top of the recently reported RM14 hike on airport tax. Sources told The Malay Mail said the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) may impose the RM35 fee to cover costs on maintenance and new equipment if it implements the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS). The United States-designed electronic data interchange system can vet high-risk passengers, such as suspected terrorists, via their background and flight information. It is understood the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has been pushing the government to

By ASRUL HADI ABDULLAH SANI asrul@mmail.com.my implement APIS so that Malaysian airports can conform to international standards in passenger processing. According to sources, the IATA is, however, against the move to impose the RM35 fee as it believes the government should bear the costs as it involves security issues. The sources also confirmed MAHB will hold a meeting with IATA in two weeks time. Last Thursday, news reports surfaced over an impending increase in airport tax of RM14 for international flights in which passengers would

have to pay RM65 from RM51 at all MAHB-run 39 airports, excluding low cost carrier terminals (LCCTs). LCCTs in Sepang and Kota Kinabalu International Airport will see an airport tax increase from RM25 to RM32 for international flights. The report added the move was part of MAHB’s exercise to cover operating costs and airport expansion. The Malay Mail also reported last Friday that MAHB’s top management had decided to put off an increase in domestic airport tax after news of the international passenger service charge hike was reported in a local paper. If implemented, international passengers are expected to pay a total of

RM100 for flights to countries requiring APIS, comprising RM65 for the new airport tax and RM35 for APIS. APIS compliant destinations are Antigua, Australia, Barbados, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Saint Lucia, Spain, the United Kingdom and the US. In April, Home Ministry deputy director-general Datuk Raja Azhar Raja Manap announced the government was considering implementing APIS and seeking the expertise of the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA). • Continued on pg2
