We’re going morning PETALING JAYA
THE MALAY MAIL, one of the nation’s oldest newspapers, today announced a strategic change in its business model – from a free afternoon daily to a paid morning paper. “The new morning paper will be positioned as a content provider that reports the news without any fear or favour,” said The Paper That Cares editor-in-chief Yushaimi Yahaya. “We will report on a wide spectrum of issues that affect Malaysians of all communities. We will give voice to our readers, and invite opinions and commentaries that highlight a diverse range of viewpoints on a particular debate. “We will focus on in-depth investigative reports on issues that impact our readers and Malaysians in general. Our content will set us apart from the competition. We believe there is a demand for such content and we are wellpositioned to fill that void,” he said. “Recent feedback from the public and an analysis of the
historical track record of the newspaper reveals that there is a critical mass of readers out there who are willing to pay for the type of content we intend to publish.” Yushaimi said the switch from afternoon to morning was primarily due to the fact that the benefits of an afternoon paper had been voided by the advent of technology, adding consumers today obtained late breaking news through alerts on their phones, tablet computers and the Internet. “A morning paper will further allow us to give our readers in-depth reports of news events that occur during the news day. If we continue as an afternoon paper, we will be put at a disadvantage as we will not be able to report the day’s events the following day, as it will be stale news after one reads the morning papers.” Yushaimi said The Malay Mail would be launched as a paid morning paper within the next few weeks. Planning is currently underway to en-
sure a smooth transition. “As we work towards moving from a free paper to a paid model, we will gradually decrease our print run as an interim measure, until the new paper is launched. We seek our readers’ understanding on this. They can, however, continue to access The Malay Mail via our website. “All of us at The Malay Mail are very excited about the prospects for the paper as we transition from a free daily to a paid model. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal readers and trust they will continue to support us as they have done so over the years. “I would also like to thank our advertisers, clients and partners who have stood by us during this time. I wish to assure them that we will do everything possible to ensure the new paid morning paper will be an even better value proposition to address their marketing and communications needs.”

Aussie women latest targets of love rats
AN Australian woman became the latest target of an online romance scam whose victims were previously mainly local women. The 29-year-old victim in Victoria was almost duped by two Nigerians and a local into sending US$23,000 (RM70,770) more after having earlier transmitted A$760 (RM2,393). Suspicious, the woman alerted the authorities. This led police here to arrest the three suspects last Friday. Federal C ommercial Cr ime Department director, Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the Australian initially hooked up with one of the Nigerians via social networking site, Facebook.
“Their two-month friendship developed into an intimate relationship and the Nigerian then asked her for financial help by banking-in money for his business,” he said. The Nigerian claimed to be British and that he had just come to Malaysia to set up a business and needed more funds. “Initially, the woman did not suspect anything and she transferred A$760 to the Nigerian," said Syed Ismail. "Embolden by this, the Nigerian then asked for US$23,000 and that's when the woman decided to come to Malaysia to meet the man." Once here, the woman sought advice from the Australian High Commission
which felt it was a scam and alerted the police. “On Sept 9, police arrested the Nigerian and his two accomplices, another Nigerian and a local, at the lobby of KL Sentral," said Syed Ismail. "Our investigations revealed the three suspects, aged 17 to 23, used the same modus operandi in 12 previous cases here where their victims were mainly local and Australian women." Police seized computers, bank books and ATM cards from the suspects. "We are still determining the total losses of their victims and why they are targeting Australian women too," said Syed Ismail.

Banking thieves Just when you thought online transaction is safe
ONE was a civil engineer and the other an IT graduate. But the two foreign students, with help from their accomplices, used their skills to con Malaysians of their money. The duo — a Jordanian and a Sierra Leonne national — joined forces with a Pakistani and four locals in conducting a new financial fraud scam using the 'data phishing' techniques and 'hijacking' SIM cards of mobile phones. Federal Commercial Crime director Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the syndicate had been operating since early this year. Its members would scout secluded Internet banking kiosks, particularly those with minimal security, and wait for customers to conduct transactions. "After customers concluded the transactions at the kiosk, the culprits immediately head for the machine. Using a thumb drive downloaded with a special software, the culprits obtained the victim's Internet banking data, including the username

and password, account number, PIN number and also the mobile phone number via the machine's USB port," said Syed Ismail. He said the data was stolen using the 'phishing technique'. Next, the syndicate hijacked the victim's SIM card by impersonating as a telecommunication service provider personnel. "The suspects then contacted and informed the victims of a two-hour 'service disruption', apparently for 'system upgrading'," said Syed Ismail, adding a two-hour time frame was all the syndicate needed for the scam. At the same time, other syndicate members would create a phony police report by using a ready-made template. The report would state the victim was mugged or robbed and their handphones and identity cards had been lost during the incident. "Posing as the victim, a syndicate member, usually one of the

locals, will then head to the telco company equipped with copies of the forged police report and the victim's identity card to claim a replacement SIM card," said Syed Ismail. The forged identity card would list the victim's personal data. Only the photo is changed to the culprit's. But the culprits would only go during closing time so that telco staff would have no time to thoroughly check their claims. "There were also instances where a syndicate member visited telco by posing as a handphone
shop staff. Armed with a forged authorisation letter 'signed' by the victim, the culprits obtained a new SIM card," said Syed Ismail. Upon releasing a new SIM card, the victim's original one would be automatically cancelled by the service provider. "Only when victims turn on their handphones after two hours would they realise that their SIM card no longer works." With a new SIM card, the syndicate obtained the transaction authorisation code (TAC) needed to transfer funds from the victim's account to their own.

Based on information from victims, police traced all seven suspects, aged between 20 and 27 years. They were arrested between Saturday and Monday at an apartment unit in Millennium Square in Section 14, Petaling Jaya. "Police also seized several sets of computers, savings account books from various banks, SIM cards and micro cards (memory cards) of various telcos, laptops, thumb drives, copies of identity cards, fake police reports, stolen credit cards and other documents," said Syed Ismail. Police believed all cases were committed in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur with losses estimated around RM243,000. "We believe the Sierra Leone man is the syndicate's mastermind as he has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Networking from a local private college in Petaling Jaya, while his Jordanian friend is a civil engineering college dropout," said Syed Ismail. City Orchard Park to be ready in three months By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani asrul@mmail.com.my
THE beleaguered KL City Orchard Park in Jalan Bellamy here is expected to be completed within three months. City Hall has identified fruit trees from nurseries, which include durian, mangosteen and rambutan, which will be purchased to complete the park. The park, for which RM17.2 million was allocated, was due to be officially launched this month but was postponed after public uproar over the conditions at the orchard. A visit by The Malay Mail in July found the 7.7 hectare park only had young trees and saplings, some of which were shrivelled. There was also an absence of shady trees, subjecting visitors to the scorching heat. KL Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail (pic) said the fruit trees would be planted by next month.
“We have already identified the trees that will be planted. I have checked the place a few times and visited many nurseries from which the trees will be transplanted," he told The Malay Mail. "We do not want to plant that many but our priority is to show people there are big trees. I expect in one month we would be able to plant the trees.” The project first made headlines in 2005 when the then mayor, Datuk Ruslin Hassan announced that upon completion, the park would have 100 species of local fruits including durian, mangosteen, langsat, duku, rambai, ciku, cempedak, jackfruit, guava and banana. The Malay Mail had also reported that project contractors Zikhtar Associates Sdn Bhd had revealed only RM595,000 from RM17.2 million was used for the purchase

and planting of trees, of which only 40 per cent comprised local fruit trees while the rest were wild fruit trees. Ahmad Fuad promised there will be upgrades to the park's infrastructure to allow visitors greater access to the fruit trees. “In terms of infrastructure, we may upgrade a little so people can move among the trees. I was not happy when people complained the trees were too small. Within three months, the park will be ready for people to come and see."

Councillors dismiss boycott conspiracy
COUNCILLORS from the Shah Alam City Council have rubbished reports that several members had staged a boycott against Mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan during last month's meeting. A lo cal English daily reported on Monday that several councillors boycotted the monthly meeting because Mohd Jaafar had allegedly refused to secure contracts for them and their cronies. The report said the councillors were allegedly unhappy with Mohd Jafaar who had become Mayor in April, replacing Datuk Mazalan Md Noor. Council chief whip Kamarudzaman Sanusi ridi-
culed the rumour and labelled it fictitious. "Boycott? I didn't hear of any boycott. There was no boycott and if there was one then we would have been solid. " No b o d y w o u l d h av e attended the meeting. So don’t listen to such rumours," he told The Malay Mail. Councillor Muhammad Najmi Samsudin echoed Kamarudzaman's sentiment and said the report was absurd. "The allegation is plain silly. Where did they get such a story? There was never a boycott." Justifying the poor turnout at the meeting last month,
councillor Sarimah Lisut explained some were absent because they had personal matters to attend to. "Yes, there were many who didn't attend but they had personal business and some were overseas." Councillor Yogasigamany Krishnasamy agreed with her councillors being absent did not translate into a boycott. "It is ridiculous. Nobody boycotted. I personally was there and can assure you there was no boycott." Councillor Ganabatirau Ve r a m a n , w h o w a s i n Australia at the time of the meeting, also denied there was any plan to boycott the Mayor.

Cautious reception of compulsory pass for English MAKING the English language a compulsory pass at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level, a move to be implemented by the Education Ministry soon, has generally been well-received but parents and others caution it must be properly implemented, including having teachers competent to teach English. National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council (National PTA) president Assoc Prof Datuk Mohammad Ali Hass an agreed it is a good move for the long-term because English proficiency of students, will improve their marketability and their leadership skills will increase with its implementation. "However, I do not think we are ready for this move because firstly, the English language curriculum is not up to the mark," he said, when contacted by The Malay Mail.
"Firstly, school children today, even after being exposed to 13 years of primary and secondary education, speak broken English as they are unsure of its proper usage. Secondly, the teachers who teach the language are themselves not equipped with sufficient proficiency." Mohammad Ali also said there's a wide gap in English language proficiency between rural and urban schools. "Teaching and learning resources are lacking in rural schools. For example, libraries at some rural schools have very few English books. Such schools also usually do not organise activities such as dramas or public speaking in English because they are not exposed to such programmes," he said. "In order for English to be made a compulsory pass in SPM, teachers need to be properly trained and once trained, they have to be equally distributed especially in
By T.K. Letchumy Tamboo and Marhalim Abas mmnews@mmail.com.my
rural areas. Unless we satisfy this condition, it's unfair, especially to students in rural schools to make the language a compulsory pass." Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (Page) president Datin Azimah Rahim said the move is in the right direction as the association has always advocated it. "Making English a compulsory pass subject is more imp or tant than making History a must-pass subject, the latter a move that will be implemented beginning 2013," she said. "However, we hope this move won't take too long. About two to three years is a reasonable time to implement this. By making English a subject compulsory to pass, school children will take it more seriously. Many employers have said they do not offer jobs to some school leavers
because of their poor command of English." However, Azimah said she is worried about the implementation of the whole move. "As we know, policy-making is exemplary in this country but implementation is not. Teachers have to be properly trained. Additionally, I believe science and mathematics should continue to be taught in English as opposed to reverting to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools and mother-tongue languages in national-type schools from 2012 onwards," she said. "One of the main objectives of introducing science and mathematics in English was to improve students' grasp of the English language but if this policy is abolished, there will be no other subject for the students to apply the English they learn in their English language classes. As
such, there's no point making English a compulsory language to pass while reverting science and mathematics to the Malay language." Ye s t e r d a y, E d u c a t i o n Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the target to make English a compulsory pass at the SPM level is “not very far away". He had said this could become possible once there were enough English teachers for the whole country and with a new curriculum in place. He also said the ministry is examining and evaluating the issue and he advised parents not to expect the transformation to be put into place straight away as the results might only be seen in two to three years' time. Meanwhile, Pasir Mas MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali said he disagreed with the move. "This was proposed way back in the 1960s and 1970s but was never implemented
for various reasons," he said. "The issue of students failing or are weak in English is due to lack of proficient teachers. There are a lot of other reasons, including the curriculum, teaching and training methods and teaching aids." With the pass being made compulsory, Ibrahim also asked whether the ministry would allow those who failed, a repeat. "Do we have enough classes to accommodate these students or will they have to resit the paper in July just like those who failed their Bahasa Melayu paper?" Ibrahim said it may be better that a pass requirement for any subject be introduced at the Form Three Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) or Standard Six Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) levels. "If they fail at those lower levels, they can repeat at the same school."

Addressing perceptions, suspicions
SO finally, the civil service is showing it's a force to reckon with. The Public Service Commission, which works in tandem with the Public Service Department and the office of the Chief Secretary to the Government, rejected the Port Klang Authority's (PKA) appointment of Capt Abdul Rahim Akob. The reason being at 62, the former Bintulu Port, Sarawak, general manager is deemed “too old” to be recalled from retirement. This decision appears have done a disservice to Abdul Rahim and all civil servants who have retired but still have more to contribute. When are you too old to serve your country? If Abdul Rahim is the best candidate to replace Kee Lian Yong who stepped down on July 5, then his age should not be a factor. In more developed countries, people like Abdul Rahim will still be gainfully employed. In the UK, the government has passed a policy where people who have reached the retirement age of 65 will not be forced to quit. Next year, Singapore will raise the retirement age from the present 62 years to 65. While Thailand and Indonesia are both reviewing their respective compulsory retirement ages of 60 and 55, respectively. Back home, we have made strides in raising the retirement ceiling, both in the public and private sectors. The retirement age in the public service was raised to 58 from 55, in 2009, while the government is discussing with stakeholders to increase the retirement age in the private sector, also from 55 to 58. But having said that, Abdul Rahim's case is unique as PKA is a unique entity. The argument one would have, echoes that of opponents to raising the retirement tenure, that there would be little room for those at rungs below to be promoted. Case in point being Capt David Padman, the deputy general manager of PKA, who at 53 and having served the port for over two decades
Down2Earth
With Terence Fernandez ON THURSDAY
with an outstanding service record, should rightly be Kee's replacement. Why did the PKA, and by extension the Transport Ministry, go out of its way to pick someone out of retirement to replace Kee? Abdul Rahim, no offence to him, ran a small port 320 hectares in size, handling 160,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of cargo. Port Klang handles about 100 million tonnes of cargo a year from three ports. Even so, one is confident that Abdul Rahim with his years of experience, albeit in a small port, will be up to the task — considering that Kee had zeroexperience running a port. But as taxpayers we have the right to ask — is there no one whom we can get to replace Kee? No one from the current batch of PKA executives, including Padman, who cannot be entrusted with the responsibility? No one from the private sector whom we can hire to run the port? And if bringing someone back from pasture to run the show is inevitable, as some critics ask, why was Datuk M. Rajasingam not considered? The 68-year-old is the former general manager of PKA who left the authority richer by RM450 million when he retired 13 years ago. He was appointed two years ago as an independent director and had pushed for transparency on the board, including holding former board directors accountable for facilitating or turning a blind eye to the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal. The PKA's appointment of Rajasingam was vetoed by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Chor Har for reasons he has yet to account for. But here's the open secret — the position is a political appointment. Someone whom the powers-that-be would be “comfortable” dealing with —
whatever that means. It is hard not to delve into perception and speculation for considering Abdul Rahim when Bintulu is the constituency of the man in the centre of the PKFZ fiasco. Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing's company, Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, is the turnkey contractor in the billion-ringgit scandal, which is now the subject of an ongoing court case that has so far seen the charging of former PKA general manager and Rajasingam's successor, O.C. Phang, and ex-transport ministers Tun Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy. Abdul R ahim, probably through no fault of his, has now become an unwilling and unwitting participant in the whole debacle and is now the recipient of unnecessary and unjustified suspicion. By right, the suspicion should be focused on the Transport Ministry and PKA for making the approach in the first place. They have not justified the need to bring Abdul Rahim out of retirement, a move which for certain, has caused dissatisfaction within the ranks of the PKA management, and worse, aspersions on an innocent party who was happily enjoying his twilight years. Even now, when public perception on the ministry and the PKA is still at a low, it does not seem that the politicians — including the minister and the chairman of the authority — are taking the trouble to improve this perception. Questionable decisions like this will continue to cause taxpayers and investors to eye the PKA with suspicion and question if the government is serious in making things right. TERENCE hopes answers will be forthcoming but isn't holding his breath. Feedback: terence@mmail. com.my

It dates back to Aug 31, 1957, when the British flag was lowered at the then Royal Selangor Club's Padang and Tunku Abdul Rahman led the shouts of "Merdeka" as he became the nation's first Prime Minister. Dataran Merdeka has long been a popular spot for thousands of people counting down to each new year as everybody's attention focused on the clock tower ticking away the final seconds of the old year. Sabahan teen braves the blaze to rescue cousins
HIS ambition was to become a firefighter, and to fulfill this, 14-year-old Jonathan Jobal joined the Fire Brigade Cadet Corps at his school in Keningau, Sabah. His budding fire-fighting skills were tested sooner than expected when he singlehandedly rescued his two cousins, aged three and one, from their wooden home which was burned to the ground. Yesterday, Jonathan was among seven recipients of F&N's Out-Do Yourself Award (OYA) 2011, which aims to recognise ordinary individuals who performed extraordinary deeds ranging from bravery, chivalry, civicconsciousness and promoting nation-building, to outstanding sports or academic achievements. Held at the Royal Selangor Golf Club, it event was organised annually since 2007 by Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd. For the first time since OYA's inception, a posthumous award was presented. The late lorry driver Ong Kim Koon, who was 52, was recognised for his self-sacrifice in rescuing a couple involved in a car accident in April, during which he was hit by a passing motorist and passed away 11 days later. His son, Vincent Ong Kah Hui, 27, said his family was touched by the honour bestowed on their father. Also present was his mother, Lau Chooi Lin, 51. Other recipients were Tey Chong Suan, 74, who dived into a canal to rescue a drowning boy in Muar, Johor; Han Besou, an Orang Asli from the Jahai tribe who saved her hus-

Good night's sleep at last Neighbour advised to reduce number of dogs after incessant barking and damage to fence
AFTER being kept awake at night and having her property damaged by a neighbour’s dogs, a woman reached her limit and complained to Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) but to no avail. T. VINITA says the disturbance started in April when her neighbours moved in. She says her neighbour’s six dogs are a nuisance as they dig at the fence bordering her property and their incessant barking keeps her up at night. “A small person could climb through one of the holes," she says. VINITA has covered the holes with rocks and roofing tiles but says the problem will persist until the council acts

● THE Petaling Jaya City Council's public relations officer, Zainun Zakaria, says
its enforcement officers visited VINITA's neighbour the same day she made the complaint. The officers advised the neighbour to reduce the number of dogs in the
household and gave them a grace period to do so. “They said they would give the dogs away to friends who are willing and able to take them. That is why it is taking so long."

Months have passed, and on one occasion when he contacted TM, a customer service representative said they would look into the matter and also refund the payment he has made for the Streamyx account. member about my complaints. I tried contacting them again and they insisted I provide them with my personal details since they claim they cannot trace my earlier complaints." He says despite giving them his full name and identity card number, they were unable to trace his complaints. "The representative was also rude when she spoke to me," says
THOMAS, who adds it has been 11 months since he first lodged a complaint with TM. ● A TM spokesman says the Streamyx account has been terminated. "We have also proposed an adjustment from the date of the Streamyx account termination which will be reflected in the following month's bill," he says.
On the number of dogs allowed per household, Zainun says each house is initially allowed only one dog but it also depends on the size of the residence. “Dog owners are not encouraged to keep five or six dogs in an area that is too small,” she says. When contacted, VINITA’s says she is aware the council's officers had visited her neighbour on Sept 12. Since then, there have only been two dogs visible in the compound. “Things are much quieter now and I’ve finally had a good night’s sleep after so long,” says VINITA. “Now I’ll just have to look into getting my fence fixed.”
"With regards to the problem of the fixed line, our technical team has discovered it is due to a faulty telephone cord. The cord has since been replaced and we have confirmed with the customer the service is now back to normal." When contacted, THOMAS says he satisfied TM has attended to the problem, and his parents can make and receive calls without disruption.

KL: Findings on maths and science disputed (Sept 9)
Tough decision to make
ENGLISH, without a doubt, is the world's lingua franca and if students are able to fully master the language, it will be of great use in their future career and personal development. The Education Ministry must realise this and ensure the consistency of whatever policy it is introducing. At the same time, Bahasa Malaysia is the language of the land. It was once the lingua franca of the region and used by many from all over the world during the heydays of the Malaccan Empire. Losing the language would mean losing
the nation's identity. Such is the dilemma we are facing. Nonetheless, changing a policy mid-way and at anyone's whim and fancy will only make things worse and prove detrimental to the education of the students (who will be most affected) as they will find it difficult to adapt. Hence, I feel Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's idea to enforce compulsory pass for English subjects for SPM is timely. By making it compulsory, students will have no choice

going to achieve unity? The only solution is for all of us to shed our selfish ways and unite. What harm is there for all Indians to join MIC (the largest Indian-based party), all Chinese to join MCA (also the largest Chinese-based party, from the beginning of Merdeka) and, needless to say, all Malays join Umno? If we all can shed our egos and think of the good this will bring to our families and friends, please go ahead and do so straightaway. The leaders of all political parties must not be a stumbling block to this proposal but meet and make the right decision for the sake of unity and a peaceful and stable Malaysia. Anandh
PJ: Paloh and Jeli deserve better life (Aug 5)
Let baby elephant run free IT was great to find out from Daily Mirror that baby elephant Paloh, which was cruelly chained up at a zoo in Johor recently, was finally freed. I am happy for the orphan elephant. Paloh is being placed at a sanctuary in Pahang where it can forage freely. Before this, Paloh, left exhausted and traumatised, was barely able to even shuffle her feet. It was the relentless effort of animal lovers around the world
ernment must ensure the usage of the English language does not intefere with the status of the national language to a point where, in the near future, the command of Bahasa Malaysia will become poor from lack of use. If that were to happen, what will do we do then? Do we revert back to teaching in Bahasa Malaysia? By that time, I think it is already too late. I have to agree whatever the decision may be, it will not be an easy one. Saifullah Mohd Ali
BRAVO to the government for coming up with the plan to enforce compulsory pass for English subjects for SPM. It is a laudable move, albeit a little belated. Malaysia needs to make English a compulsory subject, if we really want the students to master the language. Like it or not, English is still the preferred language used internationally. By doing this, students will be able to master, read, speak and write in two languages — Bahasa Malaysia and English. Instead of neglecting the English language, we should capitalise on it to help foster harmony and unity. I remember in the old days,
secondary schools were committed each year to hold at least one of Shakespeare’s or one of Charles Dickens’ plays in the school, to get students involved in stage acts and, more often than not, the play was held in the same year for students who had to sit for the literature study paper in the final school exam. In short, the students must be given full exposure in schools to help them learn how to master the language, to read, speak and write correctly. There are actually many other methods or ways one can master the English language but this is for each person to discover. Lau Bing
KL: University rankings
Too many political parties WHILE I have the highest regard and respect for democracy, allowing too many political parties in a plural society like Malaysia is just not a practical move. It needs to be reviewed because in the long run, it can be damaging to the rakyat and the family institution. Take, for example, an Indian family where the father is with the MIC, a son is with PPP, another son with Gerakan and another with IMP. The same goes for family members of other races. While the leadership has not only introduced the 1Malaysia concept, they are also striving for unity among the people. Don't we see there is so much in-fighting going on among those of the same race? In such a situation, how are we ever
but to master or at least have a good command of the language. SPM is the best place to start because it is the time when students are preparing to enter tertiary education, where almost all references are in English. This will be a good start and will surely garner a lot of support from various parties. Everyone agrees Malaysia needs a new education agenda that can slingshot its status as a formidable economic and political power in the region. Amidst the hoo-ha, the gov-

that finally forced the authorities to do something about it. Daily Mirror reported Paloh and Jeli, who have now formed a close bond, were seized from Johor Zoo by officials and taken to the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre. Although the recovery may be slow, at least Paloh is in a better place and her future is more certain now under the care of the sanctuary. Mokhtar
Aspire to be among world's best
IT is critical that all universities are both ranked and rated. Only through ranking and rating do we know where a university stands in relation to their peers. There are just too many of them. No doubt, some are excellent but many are plain mediocre. In the case of Malaysia, the government pumps in billions of ringgit each year to support the public universities and the people expect some results in the form of high ranking when any reputable survey is done. High ranking will also attract the best students and professors to be associated with that university. As we move towards a developed economy, we certainly need excellent universities to spearhead us in research and push the boundary of knowledge. We cannot take centrestage if our faculties are light and if we have no knowledge of our own. We just cannot copy and lead the way. We must aspire for some of our universi-
ties to be in the top 100, if not top 10. If not, how are we to justify the billions we pour into higher education? There are, however, many implications of having a university of distinction. First, it acknowledges that we are a country of certain standing, not a backward country. Second, it will attract more international students. Not every Tom, Dick and Harry but students of choice — the cream of the crop, like what Oxford and Cambridge did for Britain, and Harvard and MIT for the United States. Hopefully, those student will stay and contribute further to our gene pool. Third, having a distinguished university or two will make more foreign direct investors consider investing here. We tell the world, we have brains and brains are what they want. Finally, it is a great moral
booster for all of us. Academic or not, middle-class families will not be pressured to send their children overseas at tremendous cost to them. They do not have to if local universities are as good, if not better. Keep the ranking and rating. Follow it closely and be on top of the game. Mokhtar
I Don't Care: How unlettered are we?
Literacy, the first step to everything
IT is shocking there are still some students, despite already in Form 5, unable to read, write and count. How can this happen to a country like Malaysia after more than 50 years of Independence? How did the students even make it to Form 5, to say the least? What are the teachers and parents doing all this while? Is the so-called "illiteracy" by choice?
There are so many questions that need answering. At the same time, I have to agree with the writer it is quite disturbing the way our education system is being implemented. I hope the Education Ministry is taking this seriously as this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. If in one batch of National Service training, 1,000 out of
11,000 trainees are illiterate, imagine what the actual figures will be nationwide. It is no wonder we are lagging behind in many fields from other countries. How are we to compete if we still face problems of illiteracy at this time and age? Last Thursday, UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon, in a message marking International Literacy Day, was spot on when
he said illiteracy undermines efforts to combat social problems, such as poverty and diseases, and threatens social stability. He reminded the world the critical tasks of preventing violence, calming tensions and ending conflicts all demand attention to literacy. I rest my case. V. Murugan

Obama looks to gain supporters to champion key legislation UNITED STATES President Barack Obama told fired up supporters yesterday that if they loved him, they must help pass his jobs Bill, injecting more urgency into his push for key legislation. Italy greenlights austerity package amid revolt ITALY'S Chamber of Deputies yesterday formally adopted a €54.2 billion (RM229.4 bil) austerity package, the second in three months aimed at pacifying markets amid a European debt crisis. The package was adopted after deputies voted 314 in favour to 300 against. A final evening ballot followed an earlier confidence vote aimed at speeding up implementation of the measures after investors' reluctance to buy Italy's debt drove interest rates to new highs. Skirmishes broke out shortly before the evening vote outside parliament between a group of protestors and police officers, with demonstrators chanting "resign!" and throwing flares. Highly unpopular among ordinary Italians, the package was announced in a hurry last month by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government in exchange for support from the European Central Bank. — AFP

Supermodel name game Man accused of 'cybersquatting' defends 'altruistic' move
SUPERMODEL Miranda Kerr has been dragged into a complicated "cybersquatting" dispute over the .com.au web address bearing her name. James Wester, who bought mirandakerr.com.au in March, this week had it ripped away by the Australian domain name regulator, auDA, who accused him of being a cyber squatter. But he claims he bought the domain name for altruistic reasons and has accused auDA of defaming him, reports The Age. Wester caught the attention of auDA after he appeared in a Courier Mail article, published late last month. The article quoted him as saying he had registered the mirandakerr. com.au name and that it could be worth up to AU$200,000 (RM629,850). On Monday, auDA put out a statement saying the article had highlighted that mirandakerr.com.au had been bought by a company not connected to the model. It said it had decided to cancel the domain name licence for

How many tickets were sold at more than AU$150 (RM472) a pop? Etihad's concert capacity is listed as "between 12,000 to 74,000 for sporting and entertainment events," reports The Age. While Green Day drew 37,00 in 2005, for example, its highest ever attendance for a concert was in 2003, when 58,163 shriekers saw Robbie Williams. eBay scalpers already have a selection of tickets up for between AU$200 and AU$540. "breach of policy" and the name was deleted. Australian domain name rules state if you register someone's name, you need to have some form of business connection with them, and registering a domain name for the sole purpose of resale or transfer to another entity is not permitted. "The purpose of the rule against resale is to prevent people from 'cybersquatting' the names of well-known people and brands," said auDA CEO Chris Disspain. But Wester, who through his company Pacific Octane owns 6,500 domain names, including calculator.com.au and electricity.com.au, claims he has been unfairly labelled a cybersquatter and that he is considering taking legal action against the Courier Mail and auDA. He said he saw mirandakerr. com.au had come on to the market and bought it in March in order to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. "It was being bid on in an auction
and I wanted to prevent this very thing from happening," he said, comparing his actions to someone helping an injured stranger on the street. Wester said representatives of Kerr's beauty products range, Kora Organics, contacted him earlier this year requesting the domain name be transferred to them. Far from asking for an exorbitant sum for the name, Wester said he agreed to transfer it to them for free. He believed the transfer had gone through until he was called by the Courier Mail. He claims the registrar from which he bought the domain, NetRegistry, had failed through "administrative error" to transfer the name from his ownership into Kerr's ownership. Wester says that while he may have broken auDA's rules he did not register the name with malicious intent and was not seeking to profit from Kerr's name. auDA did not reply when asked whether it defamed Wester.

These women seemed to enjoy the torture of the relationships but in this story,
there is the redemption at the end," reports the Times of India. "I've said before, maybe I'm wrong, the films like the Twilight Saga have the same sort of structure, like a love that can never exist. Women seem to go crazy for these sorts of things." Fassbender admitted he didn't read the story of Jane Eyre until fairly late in life but his female relatives are big fans, so he is pleased they enjoyed his new film. "I didn't get round to reading Jane Eyre in my teenage years at school. I first came to it in about 2004 but my mum and my sister had talked about it. They both loved the Bronte sisters and they saw the film and enjoyed it."

twitter @klubbkiddkl FLASHMOBS have become common in Malaysia in the last few years. From dance mobs to live street musicals, groups of people have taken to suddenly gathering at a public venue to randomly perform an act, before dispersing just as quickly as they had assembled. And now, the flashmob has become more than just a burst of spontaneity in the streets. It became the main feature in Datuk Siti Nurhaliza’s Falling In Love music video. Just a few days ago, shoppers at the Pavilion mall were caught offguard when music started blaring near its main entrance, before the pop diva, garbed in Burberry and Mont Blanc, appeared and broke into song and dance. Surrounded by over a hundred dancing fans who descended on the scene in minutes — it was a sight to behold and attracted much attention. That was until the director yelled “cut!”. In between almost a dozen takes, Siti took time off to tell The Malay Mail why she attempted the flashmob for the music video of her debut English single. “I thought it would be interesting to incorporate it as it had never been utilised before in a local music video. “Of course, it was all the more special that I had my fans in it to be a part of the flashmob, aside from the professional dancers who were recruited.” Some 90 fans showed up at the early Monday morning shoot. While everyone had fun in the late morning shoot, it was tiring indeed to repeat the same routine, from scratch every time the smallest of details did not meet the mark. “For me, the main difference with today’s shoot was that the
GOING WITH THE FLOW: Siti, in a chequered purple jacket, dancing and singing along with the group (top and left) director Khairul Azri had employed a one-take approach to this music video for a seamless and effortless feel. “While that means the whole shoot was faster to complete, the fastest for any music video I’ve ever been involved in at least, being a one-take, single
camera shoot, there was the challenge to get everything perfect in that three minutes.” Siti is very excited about the launch of her maiden English effort, and the music video for Falling In Love will make its public appearance in less than two weeks on Sept 26.
She also put to rest some of the speculation surrounding the album, such as its cost of RM400,000 and that it includes Sean Kingston, Pitbull and Alicia Keys.

One shot at organised chaos
THE execution of the Falling In Love music video is a groundbreaking effort in that it involved a total of almost 200 cast and crew. Khairul Azri, the director of the music video for Phuture Phlow Films heaved a sigh of relief when the shoot was over, and took a deep breath before answering questions on it. “The idea for a flashmob was from Siti herself, as she wanted that feel which incorporated dance, and we came out with this one-shot approach, which is pretty straightforward so that it looks effortless.” The single camera production may not appear to raise a sweat on film, but the planning surrounding the making of it was something else. “We had a crane, where we could fly off our cameramen with a steadycam to follow the movements of Siti around the venue in that three minutes,” Khairul said. Of course, everything sounded easy on paper. When it came to the execution, imagine having to navigate through shoppers while controlling pedestrian traffic, curious onlookers and unfocused members of a large cast.
“There are definitely pros and cons when it comes to a shoot like this. There’s less editing, but on the shoot itself, we needed a lot of time to run through and practise each moment of the routine until we got it perfect,” he said, adding that the preparation however did not guarantee a flawless take, which was the reason behind repeated attempts. Khairul subjected the crew of some 50 dancers, some 90 fans and 16 production crew members to repeated takes, reviewing each frame, and paying attention to details to pick out flaws. Unlike other music videos, mistakes cannot be erased in postproduction. Still, his experience of three after establishing Phuture Phlow Films did him well, and the shoot was completed without a glitch. “I’ve done music videos for Butterfingers, Ahli Fiqir, Prema Yin, Atilmet, and Deja Voodoo Spells, and I won Best Music Video
at the Anugerah Industri Muzik with Butterfingers’ 1000 Tahun.” In the same year, he was also nominated in the same category for Butterfingers’ Mati Hidup Kembali, which incidentally
TEAM OF TWO: Atomsk (left) and Khairul
was the lowest budget for a music video at RM2,000 but remains one of the most creative music videos to date. “Phuture Phlow Films focuses mostly on corporate videos, and we ventured into music videos. Lately, we’ve begun dabbling in TV productions.” The story of Phuture Phlow apparently began when Khairul met Phuture Phlow Events founder Atomsk while they were studying in the States. “We planned that when we came back, we would focus on commercials, and work our way up from music videos,” said Khairul. “We found that wasn’t the way as music videos did not have big budgets here,” he said laughing. “Atomsk and I used to be housemates when we were studying so when he came back first, he opened Phuture Phlow Events. The last event he organised was bringing Ne-Yo here. “When I got back, we opened Phuture Phlow Films which now has six in-house staff, including two editors, two producers and two directors where Atomsk and I switch roles de-
pending on jobs.” The music video market may not be lucrative, but having a bigger budget is not the be all and end all for Phuture Phlow. “Music videos are getting better as DSLR’s are getting cheaper, and the technology for editing software is becoming more accessible. Ideas are also easier to come by too when technology is at hand. “I think the biggest problem we have is the avenue for airing as well as the lack of acknowledgement for music videos. In the States, people spend up to US$500,000 (RM1.5m) on a video,” he sighed. “Slowly our artistes are going regional and international, so hopefully music videos will be given a breath of fresh air as it does help to sell a song.” The easy way out for most in the business is incorporating CGI into their work. For Khairul, however, while post-production graphic effects can take its toll, he prefers using live action. “I’m not really a fan of the green screen even though I won with a video using the technique. I am more of a live action person.” Still, between Khairul, and Atomsk who recently just finished the music video for Siapa Dia from The Secret Life of Nora, it appears that putting moving pictures to some of the best music from the local music industry may have just gotten a new lease of life. — By JOE LEE
Action-based local idol drama to debut on TV WHEN five youngsters decided to pursue their dreams, they did not know that fate had already decided their destinies from the start. As one succeeded in achieving his dream, another is left, feeling despair over his loss to providence... Err, now, what is this all about? Well, that's the premise of a local television series, Dreaming of Sunshine, which began shooting a couple of days ago. It follows the same story arc of Taiwanese idol dramas like Meteor Garden, Smiling Pasta and Endless Love. Apart from that, audiences can also expect a whole lot of "action" as opposed to just pretty, smiling faces. For instance, local actor William San assured fans there will be a lot of challenging and dangerous scenes. San, who plays Bo Wen in the drama gets
himself into illegal races, hoping that his winnings will give his younger brother, Bo Bing (played by Adrian Tan), a better life. "As my character is involved in a lot of motorcycle-racing, I do get scared sometimes. If those stunts are not done properly, I might land myself in big trouble," San said. "But, looking at the script itself, I'm excited about it." Tan seemed even more excited about his involvement in the production. "I am very happy to be a part of this locally-made idol drama. Apart from playing a successful financier in the drama, I also play a swimming instructor for children." Tan did not mind showing skin for the drama. "I have been exercising a lot to keep fit and I want audiences to see a different side of me. When we were discussing the role the other day, the director asked if I could swim. There was an awkward moment
THE SUNSHINE CAST : (From left) Wee, Ong, San, Loo and Tan when I told everyone that my swimming skills can only save myself from drowning!" Also in the production is fresh-faced beauty Ong Ai Ling, who plays Fang Shu Ling, the only surviving family member of both Bo Wen and Bo Bing after their mother died.
Currently splitting her time between Malaysia and Singapore, Ong has been focusing most of her time in her new event company. "Time has finally permitted me to make a comeback and shoot a local drama. I am glad to be back, actually," Ong said.
Together with San, Tan and two other co-stars, Yise Loo and Wee Kheng Ming, Ong will also be lending their voices to the drama's theme song. Dreaming of Sunshine will be aired on ntv7. —By LOONG WAI TING
16 lifestyle Entertainment Legend rejuvenated in Madame White Snake
The Malay Mail Thursday 15 SEPTEMBER, 2011
By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my THE legend of the green and white snake is relived once again in Tony Ching's upcoming movie The Sorcerer and the White Snake starrring "big brother" Jet Li, Raymond Lam, Eva Huang and Charlene Choi. Passed down the generations through word-of-mouth, the tale revolves around snakes, and it has been the foundation of many great movies and TV series, most notably Tsui Hark's 1993 Green Snake. While Malaysian audiences can only get to see the movie when it officially slithers into cinemas nationwide on Sept 29, the Press and jury mem-
bers at the recent 68th Venice Film Festival gave their nod of approval. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter summarised the movie as "... fantastic visuals and non-stop action make for a spectacular, romantic Chinese CGI feast." However for fellow co-star and heartthrob, Raymond Lam, this has been a relaxing production as he is not involved in any of the major action scenes. "No, there wasn't any action scene for me, unfortunately. But I do hope in the future I will get the opportunity to flex my fighting muscles." Lam is apparently an admirer of Ching's works. "I am a big fan! I watched all of his films when I was younger. When I was offered the role as Xu Xian, I was elated and excited at the same time." On the other hand, Eva Huang, who plays the White Snake in the movie got more than she could handle, including being strapped on a wire and made to "fly". "Wireworks is not as easy as it looks. It's pretty danger-
ous, actually. You'll get injured here and there, but it won't be serious enough to halt the filming," she told the local Press recently. So who had the toughest scenes in the movie? Lam and Huang agreed it was the one that had the two of them submerged in water for 10 hours straight for two days. "Eva and I shared a kissing scene underwater and it was a very tedious process. We were shooting for a very long time in a swimming pool and the chlorine made it worst. As a result, my eyes became red and painful. We had to stop shooting for a while. It was a very cold and windy day ;
CLASH OF CO-STARS: Lam (left) and Huang
and I remembered the temperature in Beijing being at zero degrees Celsius. I worried about getting sick," he said with a laugh. On Jet Li, Huang said
TALK TO THE HAND: The formidable Jet Li
the former had been a great colleague. "He was very professional, especially on action scenes," she said. "He knew where to apply his force and where to stop short before hitting someone for real. I think he must have felt more pressure working with people like me, as I have no professional training in martial arts." On a lighter note, Lam hoped members of the audience would support the movie. "The story has great animation and action scenes. I'm
sure people, especially young audiences, would love it." The Sorcerer and the White Snake also marks the return of action superstar Jet Li to the silverscreen, after his retirement announcement a few years ago. The movie also stars Miriam Yeung as Rabbit Devil, Chapman To as Toad Monster and Vivian Hsu as Snow Goblin. The Sorcerer and the White Snake, distributed by Golden Screen Cinemas, will be gliding into cinemas nationwide on Sept 29.

Mayday, Mayday! By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my SURPRISES upon surprises. And that’s not all. You can expect tons of eyegrabbing effects that will make you come back for round two. Recent international “concert movies” — think Michaeil Jackson’s This Is It, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Glee, the 3D concert movie — might have been great hits among English-speaking moviegoers. But now, the Chinese have their own version. Enter Mayday 3DNA. Now this is going to get all Taiwanese boyband Mayday fans excited. The movie features the group’s Mayday DNA Tour, where tickets were reported to have been snatched up within hours of the band’s Singapore’s stop last year. The Mayday 3DNA concert movie is like watching a real concert and the way it unfolds is truly engaging. It feels like you’re at the actual concert hall amidst thousands of screaming fans. The problem with watching the movie in 3D is that there is such a sense of realism that you get the overwhelming urge to sing along to the many popular hits. And then you remember you’re in a cinema so you

entire film is fully-enhanced through brilliant camerawork that pans close to the stage whenever necessary, giving audiences a front-seat view. The scenes are also garnished with lighting brilliance and colours that seem to pop right out of the screen. Mayday 3DNA is an innovative and fresh attempt at turning a conventional-concept film into something bigger. It is simply aweinspiring and that’s not just because of its infectious medleys. better suppress that urge! Billed as a “concept film,” the movie is not just about a group of guys singing and head-banging in front of a massive turnout. The story also involves the ordinary lives of the people in the movie. The mood and characters are wellcaptured by actors like Richie Ren, Rene Liu and Lam Suet. Non-fans might be disinterested but hardcore fans would no doubt crash the box office counter. However, this reviewer can assure non-fans they wouldn’t be wasting a penny if they bought a ticket. The effects is top notch and the

SERI KEMBANGAN
Shabery: We'll step in if we have to SPORTS MINISTER Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek says his ministry is willing to step in and resolve matters between independent doubles pair Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen and the BA of Malaysia (BAM). However, this will only be the case if all other amiable options have been exhausted. Shabery was responding to the Olympic Council of Malaysia's (OCM) so called successful mediation procedure between the three parties. "I've not received a report from OCM. Before I say anything, I need to see what they mean by a successful mediation," said Shabery. "We (Sports Ministry) can intervene under the Sports Development Act 1997 but I rather the parties come to an understanding." Intervention by the Sport Minister is one option Teik Chai-Bin Shen can seek. Other options include arbitration, civil suits or taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) in Switzerland.

from 12 nations which many nations are using as a venue to select their golfers for the Sea Games. "I didn't play too well today but I hope to make up for it when play resumes tomorrow," said Jeremiah, who is trying to impress the national selectors and get in the Sea Games squad. One person who doesn't have to worry about the Sea Games is Dottie, who is already assured of boarding the plane to Indonesia. The 17-year-old has already been selected to represent her country at the biennial regional games and it is this knowledge which is giving her the edge in Saujana's famous Palm Course. "It is good to know that I have already secured my spot
KLRC players Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen may opt for arbitration to settle their ongoing woes with the BA of Malaysia (BAM). Teik Chai-Bin Shen did not discount the possibility of seeking such redress while sources close to the duo claim they will file for arbitration next week. Nevertheless, the independent pair insisted they have no beef with BAM and added the mediation conducted by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) was promising. Teik Chai-Bin Shen were dropped for lower-ranked Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thien How at the World Championships in London last month. They took BAM to task and this was followed by a three-eyed meeting between the pair, BAM and OCM. OCM claimed the two meetings were a success on Tuesday but Teik Chai-Bin Shen sang a different tune during a Press conference at New Vision Badminton Centre in Petaling Jaya yesterday. "We're thankful to OCM

for mediating this matter. The process helped us progress in our discussions with BAM," said Teik Chai. "But the matter has not been resolved. We have compromised a lot and I know BAM has done the same too. But we have yet to find a common ground." However, the pair are hoping the matter will not prolong as they would prefer to concentrate on their careers in the sport instead. "We're badminton players. We want to concentrate on the courts and move on as quickly as possible. "If things don't go down well, then we will take several other options including arbitration or going to the courts. But let's take it one step at a time and I hope we don't have to go to that extent." Nevertheless, the duo maintained they remain grateful to the national body for their help and assistance in the past. "We are appreciative of
BAM. Without their support during our early days, we will not be where we are today," said Bin Shen. "We do not want to fight BAM. We just want our rights to be upheld. We trained s o hard for t he World Championships but couldn't play. That's the only thing we are unhappy of," he added. They remain tight-lipped over their wish list, acknowledging their "gentleman's agreement" with BAM to solve this matter internally. As Z a k r y, as wel l as Fairuzizuan Tazari, are now attached to KLRC, Teik ChaiBin Shen could stay away from training with the BAM shuttlers at Stadium Juara. "We wrote to BAM requesting to spar with their players but we've seen statements being made saying that players who do not enjoy a good standing with BAM are not welcomed to train there. Furthermore, we can train with Zakry and Fairuzizuan now," added Teik Chai, who last trained at the stadium last Wednesday.

SUBANG: GOLF/ 100PLUS Malaysian Open
A HEAVY thunderstorm disrupted play at the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open with Malaysia's Jeremiah Kim still in contention to take home the boys' overall crown. Jeremiah, who carded a three-under 67 yesterday, was four-over for the day with five holes to play. The players kept their scorecard and as such, there is no clubhouse leader board. Dottie Ardina of the Philippines, who was fiveunder on Wednesday, dropped a stroke yesterday, but she too has not finished her round. A heavy thunderstorm at 1.45pm caused havoc with the scheduling as only one flight managed to finish their round before play was halted. The golfers kept their scorecards and play will resume at 7.30am today. The cut-off for the third and final round has been set at 50 per cent of the number of participants in each of the three categories — U-18, U-16 and U-14. The tournament received entries from 124 golfers

in the team for the Sea Games in November," said Dottie, who hails from Laguna, a suburb 40-minutes from Manila. There is less pressure on me to perform and I can go out there and give it my all. "I finished fourth in the individual event at the Laos Sea Games two years ago. This time I will try to earn a medal of any colour, although it would be good to get the gold. "I'm delighted with the way I've been playing in Malaysia and in particular the Palm Course. I played here five years ago and it is as daunting now as it was back then. "Nonetheless, I feel the course suits my game and I hope to continue my good form until the last day to take home the title." If Dottie does win the overall crown tomorrow, she will be the third Filipina to emerge as the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open champion. Chihiro Ikeda was the first to do so in 2007 while Sarah Ababa emulated that feat last year.
Shaaban relishes Classic opportunity NATIONAL professional golfer Shaaban Hussin's celebration on the greens said it all. He had just qualified for the Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia by winning the national qualifiers. Shaaban also won the qualifiers in the inaugural edition last year. "It's just delightful. This is the biggest golf event in Malaysia," said Shaaban, 31. "I wanted to play here badly because there is a special aura to this tournament. Furthermore, it's sanctioned by the Professional Golf Association (PGA)." Shaaban finished 40th in the tournament last year and wants to improve in the final standings this year. "Even 39th place would be an improvement. But that is not my target. I want to play my best and aim higher." The defending champion, who was joint leader on day one and took the outright lead in the second round, sealed the triumph with a flawless 2-under-par 69. "I played according to my game plan and it worked out just right. I came into the

third round thinking that if my closest rivals made a move up the leader board, then I would have to go on the offensive and attack the pins more. However, I maintained my lead and had to place the ball in the centre of the greens." managed 5-under-par 208. Shaaban will compete in the Macau Open today and the Indian Open next month before beginning preparations for the Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia. "Practice before the main draw will be crucial. The conditions will be different then and I have to get used to it," added Shaaban. The tournament will be held at the Mines Resort & Golf Club from Oct 27–30.

Emotions did get the best of me, tweets Serena SERENA WILLIAMS (pic) explained her outburst at Greek umpire Eva Asderaki in Monday's US Open women's final in a Twitter posting this morning, saying she lost control of her emotions. Australian Samantha Stosur coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over the American 13-time Grand Slam singles champion, who directed a series of insults at Asderaki in the second set. "My emotions did get the best of me this past weekend when I disagreed with the umpire," Williams said. "It has been a long road to get back to the US Open this year, and I am thankful to have had such a great two weeks in New York." Williams, who turns 30 on Sept 26, was fined US$2,000 for a code violation for verbal abuse for her comments. She was on probation after a 2009 US Open semifinal outburst but was not banned from next year's US Open because the latest tirade was not ruled a "major offence". The latest controver sy stemmed from Williams hitting a forehand winner and screaming, "Come on," while

Britain and Ireland skipper Paul McGinley agreed to give up the right of the visiting team to strike the opening shot. "It was Jean's idea and a

IT has not been the perfect start to their Malaysia Cup campaign but Selangor coach K. Devan is not pressing the panic button just yet. Having settled for a goalless draw against KL on Tuesday, Selangor are now third in Group D. The Red Giants play Terengganu-based T-Team at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday. Selangor lost 1-0 to T-Team in the curtain-raiser and could only manage a 2-0 win over Police. "I guess we’re choosing the hard way to qualify," said Devan. "Our finishing is poor. Perhaps the weather (on Tu e s d a y ) a f f e c t e d o u r rhythm." Devan pointed out the water-logged pitch frustrated his players, who failed to play their brand of football. Captain Amri Yahyah and Amirulhadi Zainal could not run well, while P. Gunalan and Razman Roslan could not perform their overlaps effectively. Safiq Rahim sat on the sidelines during the match against KL, and the national captain could once again warm the

bench in the match against T-Team. "Safiq needs rest. We have options in midfield... there’s Amri and Hardi (Jaafar) so I can afford to rest Safiq. We will surely use him in the later stages of the tournament, especially in the quarterfinals. "I wish I can also rest Amirulhadi but there’s no suitable candidate to replace him at the moment." Devan would also want to rethink fielding Sritharan Selver Raju in the coming matches. Sritharan looked
unfit and was easily outpaced by the KL players during the match on Tuesday. It’s back to the drawing board for Devan and Co. as they hope to employ the right tactics when facing T-Team. "It’s a do or die mission. They won in the earlier match and I want to see us reverse that result on Saturday. "If we don’t win at Shah Alam, then it’s going to be a problem." very good idea. I was very happy to roll in behind it," said McGinley. The Irishman caused a minor surprise by splitting up good friends Lee Westwood, the world No 2, and British Open champion Darren Clarke when
he announced his pairings. Westwood and Mark Foster take on Dane Anders Hansen and Italy's Francesco Molinari in the opening session of the biennial event while Clarke joins forces with David Horsey against Italian Matteo
Manassero and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts. "I decided on the first day it was important the rookies on the team all have experienced players with them," said McGinley. "That's why I broke Lee and Darren up. "I'm very much aware of how formidable this European team is. It's probably the strongest team they have ever produced... so we are under no illusions whatsoever that we are going to have to play extremely well if we want to win." The other two matches feature Swede Peter Hanson and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin against Ross Fisher and Scott Jamieson while Dane Thomas Bjorn and Swede Alex Noren face Ian Poulter and Robert Rock. Tseng confident in quest for ninth win of year COMING off a playoff victory last week, world No 1 Tseng Yani of Taiwan bids for her ninth triumph of the year starting tomorrow at the US$1.3m (RM4m) Navistar LPGA Classic. Tseng hopes to add the US$195,000 top prize to a tour-best US$2.1m in 2011 earnings. Her rivals include world No 2 Suzann Pettersen of Norway, world No 3 Cristie Kerr, an American, and world No 4 Choi Na-yeon of South Korea. "I feel pretty good. I've got lots of confidence right now," Tseng said. "My goal this year was to be No 1 and I did it. "Now I just keep achieving my goals, like hitting the driving straighter and bunker shots save more and getting my putting average lower. I just keep doing it this year and it seems to work out pretty well." Tseng has been atop the rankings since Feb 14 but has found staying on top for 30 weeks tougher than the achievement
of climbing to the top. "It's difficult to defend the No 1 position because when you have a goal of getting there, you just keep trying to achieve it," Tseng said. "I'm No 1, but I feel like I still have a long way to go. I still have so many things I need to learn, I need to achieve and I need to work on. I'm only 22." Tseng became the youngest golfer, man or woman, with five Major titles when she won last month's Women's British Open. Her other LPGA titles this year include last week's Northwest Arkansas Championship, the 10th LPGA victory of her career, plus the Honda LPGA Thailand, LPGA State Farm Classic and Wegmans LPGA Championship. Tseng also won the Women's Australian Open and the ANZ Ladies Masters last February. — AFP

Scotland's physical play does the trick over fighting Georgians SCOTLAND captain Rory Lawson was delighted with their hard-fought 15-6 victory over Georgia in a physical Pool B clash yesterday where persistent rain had a huge influence on the game. "The conditions dictated a lot of today (yesterday)," Lawson told ITV. "We came up against a big old Georgian side who were really determined, physical and ultimately, it was a workmanlike performance to put them away." Scotland's defence had come under fire after last Saturday's 34-24 win over Romania, but they looked much more solid at the back yesterday. "That adds to a little bit of tension," Lawson said of the criticism. "But we just kept plugging away in the right areas and then took the points when they were on offer. "It's a massive hats off to our front five. They took the Georgian scrum on. A lot has been touched on there but
ROTORUA
the boys went out and showed what we're about. We came here looking to get two wins and it's tough with a four-day turn around. But we got what we came for. Now we prepare for the next challenge." Scotland head coach Andy Robinson was disappointed with the number of turnovers but praised the defensive improvements since the weekend. "It wasn't going to be pretty with the weather and we needed our front five to perform tonight," he said. "I thought they did that really well. We turned the ball over and allowed Georgia to get out of their territory. "But I was really delighted with the way we defended. We had to step up from last week when we conceded 24 points. That was disappointing, so it was pleasing to see this. "The four-day turnaround was tough as well. When we came in to Invercargill we wanted nine points minimum

so I'm really pleased we've got those nine points. Georgia's Scottish head coach Richie Dixon admitted his side needed to cut out on mental errors to get results. "Scotland dominated in attacking us. Our defence was coping but there were too many errors and Scotland kept us
from getting any momentum,'' he said. "You can do all the training you like but it's only in the first game that you really find out. So we know we have a lot of work to do. We killed ourselves in terms of attacking momentum with so many fouls and penalties."
Costly win for Samoans
SAMOA are paying the price of their 49-12 victory over Namibia after two influential players were injured in a bruising Pool D clash yesterday. Flyhalf Tusi Pisi and flanker Taiasina Tuifua suffered a left hamstring and a rib injury, respectively. They were forced off the pitch after 30 minutes against a Namibian side without a win after 13 Rugby World Cup matches. Samoa head coach Titimaea Tafua said it was too early to assess the damage. But he will be especially concerned for Pisi, a left-foot kicker who had bagged 10 points before leaving the field. "The medical people are still working on it," said Tafua. "We'll know more tonight (yesterday)." Tafua and his players will have their fingers crossed as they have just four days to prepare for a crunch match against Wales in Hamilton which is likely to decide who will progress to the last eight.

Human wrecking ball Alesana Tuilagi was at his destructive best yesterday scoring a hattrick of tries for the Samoans, while flanker Maurie Fa'asavalu and ''Man-of-the-Match'' George Stowers were strong in the forwards. The official media guide lists Tuilagi at 111kg but in an ominous revelation for the Welsh, Samoa backs coach
Brian McLean said he was, in fact, much bigger. "I wouldn't like to be standing in front of him when he's in full cry," said McLean about Tuilagi, who has now scored an impressive 15 tries in 23 Test matches. "I saw someone in the paper saying he's 110kg but he's actually 121kg. He was unfit when we played Australia last July and he was 126kg.
He's quite a sight when he's in full flight." Samoa started with the same XV who pulled off their remarkable upset over the Wallabies in Sydney on July 17, and the match went to script when scrumhalf Kahn Fotuali'i opened the scoring after just 49 seconds. The Samoans led 25-0 at half-time, and it was no surprise when they eased off a little after the interval as Tafua rested his star players. Namibia struggled in the lineouts and scrums as the physical Samoans imposed their stamp on the match, played in windy conditions in a mid-week carnival atmosphere. "They pride themselves on being really physical," said Namibia captain Jacques Burger, who was outstanding at openside flanker in a losing side. "We tried to play a safe game against them but they outclassed us today and showed why they're a worldclass team."
C A NA DA c ap t a i n Pat Riordan praised their awesome performance in sending Tonga packing 25-20 in a Pool A match at Northland Events Centre yesterday. Tries in the last quarter of an hour from number eight Aaron Carpenter and wing Phil Mackenzie helped the Canadians come back from 13-20 down, maintaining their 100 per cent record against Tonga in Rugby World Cups. "That was awesome, I'm so proud of the boys, the guts they showed,” Riordan said. The hooker admitted there was little time at the interval to dwell on Tonga’s revival as he was too busy getting his head stitched up. Canada had to battle to wrest the initiative from Tonga after two tries from Siale Piutau had helped the Sea Eagles to a 20-13 lead midway through the secondhalf. Piutau crossed just before half-time and again in the 53rd minute to register the first brace of tries by a Tongan player in the tournament. Canada led 10-7 at the break thanks to second row Jebb Sinclair’s 13th minute try, after DTH van der Merwe scythed through and fellow centre Ryan Smith delivered the scoring pass. Fullback James Pritchard also got in the act with a conversion and penalty. Piutau's first try, converted by fullback Kurt Morath, brought Tonga back into contention just before the break. And Morath levelled straight after the interval with a penalty. Pritchard replied almost immediately before Piutau’s try, converted by Morath, took them 17-13 ahead. As the second-half wore on, Tonga began to find more shape to their play and another Morath penalty took
them 20-13 ahead. However, Carpenter powered for a try in the 67th minute after good work from Conor Trainor to leave the sides poised at 20-18, before Mackenzie's try and Pritchard's conversion took the Canucks clear.

'El Nino' will strike back Luiz believes Torres will get goals after fine performance against Leverkusen
CHELSEA defender David Luiz hailed teammate Fernando Torres saying the Spaniard will score plenty of goals despite not finding the net in their first Champions League match this season at Stamford Bridge yesterday. The Blues defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 with Torres providing assists for both goals. Luiz, a former Benfica m a n , t o l d S k y Sp or t s : "Torres had a good game (against Leverkusen). Two assists and people always say 'Fernando has big pressure in the head' because of no goals, but this season I know he will score many, many goals." Chelsea boss Andre Villas-B oas, meanwhile, reserved special praise for Luiz, particularly for his determined attacking play from the back. "It's not the first time this season that you've seen our centrebacks breaking through, driving with the ball. It's something we're proud of — all four of them have that natural technical ability. That led to a superiority in the channel that got us the goal," the Portuguese told Daily Mirror. "I'm happy. It means the idea that were putting over in training is taking hold.
STORM WARNING: Torres (right) takes a shot in the match yesterday — AFP photo
These players have the technical talent to take it out on the pitch." Chelsea next face Manchester United in the Premier L eague at Old
Trafford on Sunday, and will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in all competitions and prove their title credentials against the champions.
Villas-Boas refused to say if Torres will start in this massive game despite his impressive display against Leverkusen. "We have another couple
of days to train and he will compete with the other four (strikers) for that position. We have to take the best decision possible," he told The Times. However, he did say he has forgiven Torres after an interview in which the striker supposedly called his teammates old and slow, and that the internal inquiry into the incident is over. "The problem is solved. The investigation is over. You saw the player involved and he put in a good collective performance. "Hopefully, these things won't arise in the group again. If they do, it'll be the manager who has to resolve it," he said. Villas-Boas pledged his side will play with ambition against United and that it should be a good indication of their chances for the Premier League title. "Sunday is a different kind of challenge altogether," he said. "We face United perhaps in their most tremendous moment of motivation and flair and style. They have made their impact at the beginning of the Premier League. Motivation will be the key factor in the game and we will go there to try to win it."
SUNDERLAND
Black Cats must be formidable at home, says O'Shea STRUGGLING Sunderland defender John O'Shea is desperate to put an end to the club's wretched home form. The Black Cats have won just twice at the Stadium of Light this year with a New Year's Day success against Blackburn and a victory against Wigan in April.
Steve Bruce's side have lost both of their matches at home this season, a 1-0 derby defeat to Newcastle and a 2-1 loss to Chelsea last weekend. They are languishing in 16th place after four games and take on a Stoke side on Saturday who have made a flying start to the season.
O'Shea has not played at the Stadium of Light yet, after missing the defeat to Chelsea with a calf strain. "It's been the case this year that the home form hasn't been that great," the summer signing from Manchester United told Sunderland Echo.
"That will be the key to how successful we are this season, making sure our home form is rock solid. I never had an easy game when I came up against Sunderland in the past. It was always a difficult game as a United player and an intimidating ground to play at.
"As a group, we have to make the Stadium of Light a fortress again for us. The key is scoring goals. "The Stadium of Light will be rocking this weeke n d . Hop e f u l ly, we ge t the goals we need and we can send everyone home happy."
LIVERPOOL
Liverpool out to bounce back at White Hart Lane LIVERPOOL assistant manager Steve Clarke is not prepared to speculate on rightback Glen Johnson's fitness and expects a firedup Liverpool side against Tottenham on Sunday. Johnson suffered a hamstring injury in the 1-0 defeat to Stoke last Saturday having only made his first appearance of the season as a late substitute.
The 27-year-old had been sidelined with a thigh problem and his latest setback represents a frustration for manager Kenny Dalglish. Ahead of Sunday's trip to Spurs, Liverpool are waiting to discover the extent of Johnson's injury and Clarke does not want to guess before medical assessments are complete. "We will just see how he
is when we get the scan and see what the time frame is," Clarke told his club's website. On top of Johnson's injury, the loss to Stoke came as a huge annoyance to Liverpool in a game in which they dominated but lost to Jon Walters' controversial penalty. It was the Reds' first defeat of the season and Clarke
is expecting the squad to bounce back when they take on Spurs. "When you've been in football as long as I have you know these things can happen. You can completely dominate the game, create many chances and not manage to get a goal that would have given us some reward for the hard work we put in," he said.
"Stoke got a soft penalty which gave them an undeserved lead and I think that was the first time they had been in our penalty box. Once they got themselves in front, they proved to be difficult to break down. They were difficult opponents. "We have to make sure we put in an acceptable performance when we go to Spurs and get the required result."

Dinamo undone by di Maria strike
SPANISH giants Real Madrid got off to a winning start in their Champions League group in a hard fought 1-0 win over Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. A second-half goal from Argentinian Angel di Maria (pic) was the difference between the sides, though, the hosts had goalkeeper Ivan Kelava to thank for restricting the damage. The result may have satisfied Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, but the refereeing of Norwegian Svein Moen for him left a lot to be desired. "We are happy with the result as it is always good to get off to a winning start," said Ronaldo, who failed to add to his tally of 28 Champions League goals in 70 appearances. "However, I hope we will not have a repeat of this refereeing performance, it was shameful," added Ronaldo, who received a lot of close attention and ended with a bloodied ankle after a tackle by Jerko Leko. Real had started brightly creating several early chances, Cristiano Ronaldo firing in a third minute left-footed volley that flew wide while in-form French striker Karim Benzema went close on two occasions but both efforts went over the bar. Fabio Coentrao also had a narrow miss, breaking into the hosts' area but his curled shot shaved the bar. Dinamo, though, gradually came more into the game and whilst they found chances hard to come by they more than held their own and were deservedly all square at 0-0 at half-time. Real, though, resumed their early dominance at the start of the first-half keeping home custodian Kelava busy. He had only just saved from Xabi Alonso when di Maria struck, superbly set up by Marcelo, in the 53rd minute. Kelava kept the host in the match with several fine stops from Ronaldo and two from fullback Sergio Ramos as the Spanish side tried to ram home their advantage. — AFP
AN EARLY Toni Kroos strike set Bayern Munich up for a convincing 2-0 win over Villarreal this morning as they look to assert themselves in the Champions League "Group of Death". With Manchester City and Napoli also in Group A they are all set to be tough matches and no side can afford to drop points. Bayern got off to the perfect start with Kroos firing home after six minutes and they never looked back in a commanding performance from the Germans. They had a series of chances in the second half to finish off Villarreal before substitute Rafinha secured the win with 15 minutes left. It left their veteran coach Jupp Heynckes delighted, following on as it did from the 7-0 hammering of Freiburg last weekend. "We can all rejoice after this match," said Heynckes, who coached Real Madrid to the 1998 trophy. "We could of course have wrapped this up earlier. But the Champions League is not the Bundesliga, it is a lot tougher. "We have a great bunch of players who can be very proud of themselves." Despite the task ahead, Villarreal knew how important it was to start the group stage well with difficult games ahead

Ronaldo drops Anzhi hint CRISTIANO RONALDO has hinted that he is open to linking up with Samuel Eto'o at Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian Premier League. Anzhi announced their intentions to create a team of superstars by agreeing to pay Eto’o £300,000 a week when snapping him up from Inter Milan, and now they have Ronaldo in their sights. Anzhi are willing to splash out £80m for Ronaldo and double his wages to tempt him to Russia. Ronaldo is rumoured to have said about the deal: "In football you never know what can happen in the future, so if one day I go and play in Russia, do not be surprised."

but they went behind early on. Missing his main creative player Borja Valero through suspension, coach Juan Carlos Garrido fielded a solid midfield including the veteran Marcos Senna, and aimed to attack using the pace of Nilmar and Giuseppe Rossi. However his plan to be defensively strong did not last more than a few minutes as Bayern's potent attack put them ahead. Franck Ribery found Kroos, who was given far too much space in the heart of the Villarreal penalty area, and he finished clinically. The home side tried to respond and their forwards certainly looked like they had the beating of Bayern defenders
Holger Badstuber and Daniel Van Buyten, but they saw little of the ball as the Germans enjoyed the majority of the possession in midfield. Bastian Schweinsteiger had a powerful shot from distance which was blocked by keeper David Lopez, while Ribery was the main threat and making it a tough evening for full back Mario Gaspar. Rossi had Villarreal's best chance of the first half when he got goal side of Van Buyten but with the ball at a difficult height, he shot straight at Manuel Neuer. Shortly after Van Buyten limped off and was replaced by Rafinha, who at least offered them greater speed at the back.
After the break Bayern substitute Nils Petersen made an immediate impact but was twice denied by Lopez in the Villarreal goal, the second time he just had the keeper to beat. The game lost its earlier rhythm but while the game was scrappy, Bayern were enjoying better openings and Lopez continued to come to Villarreal's rescue. Schweinsteiger and Peterson had further shots saved after being given plenty of time on the edge of the box. With Bayern peppering the Villarreal goal it appeared only a matter of time before they scored again and it came eventually from Rafinha, with Lopez for once, at fault as he was beaten at his near post. — AFP

Kolarov rescues draw for Manchester City DEFENDER Aleksandar Kolarov salvaged a point for Manchester City as they drew 1-1 at home to fellow newcomers Napoli in their Champions League Group A opener this morning. City had by far the best of the possession and the chances but failed to heed the warnings that Napoli were dangerous on the counterattack before the Italians took a surprise lead through Edinson Cavani in the 69th minute. That goal and the fact that Vincent Kompany had been forced to save a Marek Hamsik volley off the line stunned City into action and they levelled five minutes later with an unstoppable free-kick from 25 metres out from Kolarov. It sent the Etihad Stadium into jubilant celebrations even if the fans will rue so many missed opportunities including Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure hitting the woodwork. City showed no sign of nerves on their debut when Samir Nasri shot just wide in the third minute before Edin Dzeko used
all his muscle and height to power through the Napoli defence only to send his effort just wide after a neat one-two with David Silva. The hosts got a sharp reminder to be wary of their visitors on the break midway through the first half when forward Ezequiel Lavezzi cracked a powerful curling shot against the crossbar. City tightened up and then rattled the woodwork themselves towards the end of the first half when Toure clipped the underside of the crossbar with a drive after a move he had started in his own half. Napoli keeper Morgan De Sanctis dived well to his right to save a Kolarov free kick that had missed several City heads five minutes before the break but still the team who had averaged nearly four goals a game this season did not score. Instead Christian Maggio raced up the field to put Cavani through and he kept a cool head to give Napoli the lead against the run of play before Kolarov rescued a point for City. — Reuters
LIVERPOOL youngster Nathan Eccleston has risked his future at the club after making a controversial claim on Twitter about the 9/11 attacks in New York. The 20-year-old forward suggested attacks on the Twin Towers weren’t the work of terrorists, and now the Reds' American owners could be gearing up to come down hard on the naive prospect. "I aint going to say attack don't let the media make u believe that was terrorist that did it," he wrote on his social network page. The forward later removed the post, but he wasn't quick enough to avoid the attention of Liverpool’s eagle-eyed chiefs and could be punished for his actions.

Giggs: Scholes will never be replaced
RYAN GIGGS (pic) wishes his old mate Paul Scholes had not quit in the summer because he knows Manchester United will never find another like him. United embarked on a fruitless search for a replacement playmaker who could take on the responsibility which Scholes carried for so long but Giggs felt it was almost a pointless search. "Will you get another Paul Scholes?" he said during an exclusive interview with MUTV. "No. Never. Not in a million years." Getting someone in like for like is impossible. But the club has to go on. We have to evolve. That is the Manchester United way."

Devil’s saviour Giggs spares sluggish United
MANCHESTER UNITED were indebted to a superb Ryan Giggs goal as they drew 1-1 with Benfica this morning despite a below-par performance in their Champions League Group C opener. Giggs, 37, sent a rocket into the top corner three minutes before half-time to cancel out Oscar Cardozo’s 24thminute opener for a Benfica side who seemed intent on puncturing their opponents’ early-season momentum. At Lisbon’s iconic Estadio da Luz, United looked a shadow of the side that has soared to the top of the Premier League with 18 goals in their first four games. It was only thanks to Giggs and some fine goalkeeping from competition debutant Anders Lindegaard that Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest a string of players did not backfire. “Once we scored, we played well,” said the United manager. “Our possession was too cautious in the first-half. It was the kind of possession that gives you a certain control but doesn’t win you the game. “Benfica had some terrific chances in the last 15 min-
utes. There was one good chance and Anders made a great save.” Ferguson made eight changes to the side that beat Bolton 5-0 on Saturday, in a nod to Sunday’s visit of Chelsea. Patrice Evra, Jonny Evans and Wayne Rooney were the only men to keep their places. Mindful, perhaps, of United’s pedigree, Benfica were initially content to concede the initiative but uncertainty in the visitors’ play allowed Jorge Jesus’ men to assert themselves. Cardozo registered Benfica’s first shot on target with a low effort that Lindegaard claimed comfortably but the Paraguayan was less merciful in the 24th minute. Collecting a high pass from the enterprising Nicolas Gaitan on his chest, he turned Evans cleverly before clipping an accomplished finish inside Lindegaard’s right-hand post. It was the first away goal United had conceded in the competition since their quarter-final loss to Bayern Munich in the 2009-10 tournament. United’s only effort of note
had been a shot from a tight angle that Antonio Valencia blazed over the bar. But from nowhere Giggs rolled back the years to produce a stunning equaliser that silenced the home fans. After picking up possession on the right-hand side, the Welshman spied a pocket of space on the edge of the box that he surged into before arrowing a fine drive into the top-right corner. Giggs’ goal, from United’s first shot on target, broke his own record for the tournament’s oldest goalscorer and means he has now scored in more Champions League campaigns — 16 — than any player in history. His intervention could not disguise United’s problems, however, and Benfica continued to look dangerous in the second-half. Pablo Aimar fizzed a low effort narrowly wide. And although Giggs drew a save from Artur after wriggling into the area, Lindegaard then had to produce a brilliant stop to palm away a side-footed effort from substitute Nolito. When Emerson advanced from leftback and toed a shot across goal, Ferguson
rescued: Giggs makes a point at Benfica — AFP photo
decided he had seen enough and sent on Nani and Javier Hernandez in place of Darren Fletcher and Valencia. There was no stemming the red Benfica tide though and after Lindegaard had pushed away a curler from Gaitan, Phil Jones was sent on to add muscle to the
creaking defence. A late let-off for United saw Nolito find the side netting from close range with three minutes left and Ferguson will be thankful that his side’s most challenging fixture of the group phase did not prove more costly. — AFP

TRABZONSPOR’S Ondrej Celustka struck 14 minutes from time to stun 2010 winners Inter Milan and clinch a 1-0 away win in the Turkish side’s Champions League group stage debut this morning. The Turkish runners-up, only in the competition after Fenerbahce were withdrawn because of match-fixing allegations, looked comfortable throughout and Celustka expertly hooked the ball in on the slide after Halil Altintop struck the bar. Just before the goal, Inter substitute Diego Milito spurned two chances when his close-range effort was saved and then his header went over. But the hosts were poor in their opening Group B clash.
New Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini has now lost his first three matches in charge, including the Italian Super Cup defeat by AC Milan, and has already been criticised in the media by the club’s owner Massimo Moratti. Gasperini abandoned the three-man defence that flopped in Sunday’s opening 4-3 Serie A defeat at Palermo and reverted to their traditional four at the back. But it made little difference. A spark was lacking and the hosts only really came to life midway through the second-half when Mauro Zarate had a shot saved at the near post and then strike partner Giampaolo Pazzini failed to connect with the goal at his mercy. Wesley Sneijder wasted another free kick just after the break and Inter con-
tinued to labour with their slow build-up play giving the visitors ample chance to cover any gaps. Inter, second in Serie A last season, have had four managers in just over a year after the glory of their 2010 treble under Jose Mourinho turned sour and few fans expect the current crop to challenge for a title in Europe this campaign. Their performance will reinforce that view even if Trabzonspor failed to offer much threat until Czech Celustka’s goal. The visitors, who had two players suspended and coach Senol Gunes banned from the bench, had goalkeeper Tolga Zengin to thank for some smart saves later on. — Reuters
