Sisters flee hell Four siblings turn to The Paper That Cares following claims of torture by mother and her ‘lesbian lover’ Pic: SAMSUL SAID By FRANKIE D’CRUZ frankie@mmail.com.my

FOUR sisters, aged between six and 15, have sought refuge in a shelter home for children with the help of The Paper That Cares following hellish allegations of child labour, illtreatment, neglect and drugs involving their mother and her alleged lesbian lover. Another sibling, aged 14, is with their 35-year-old-mother, who was imprisoned for 36 months and fined RM300,000 in 2005 for illegal deposit-taking totalling RM1.7 million in Sabah. Their father, 46, also served the same sentence for taking

deposits without a licence, an offence under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act in 1999. They were joint directors of the rogue company that was one of the earliest exposed in Sabah for illegal deposittaking. The whereabouts of mother and child are currently not known but it is thought she is holed up with her 34-year-old alleged lesbian partner. It was learnt the mother met her alleged lover while serving time in the Kota Kinabalu prison, where the latter was

convicted for an unrelated crime. All three were released in 2008. While the girl’s father stayed put in Kota Kinabalu, the two women moved to Kuala Lumpur and subsequently took the five girls who were being looked after by their grandmother. That was when the nightmare for the Sabahan sisters unfolded. After more than three years of alleged torture, four of them, aged six, eight, 12 and 15 respectively, fled their home two

weeks ago when their mother and the other sibling went shopping. The 15-year-old, a Form Two student, lodged three police reports on July 11 at Bukit Puchong police station, claiming: • All five girls were allegedly subjected to child labour. • They were forced, among other odd jobs, to sweep and collect trash at Taman Langat Utama , Kuala Langat, under a local council cleaning contract obtained by their mum’s ‘lover’. • They were paid between

RM1 to RM5 each for 12 hours work. • She had to work parttime, including as a restaurant dishwasher and mobile phone shop assistant, to allegedly support the drug habit of her mother’s ‘lover’ and to buy rations. • They were exposed to an environment of lesbian activities at home. • Hardship of working while studying. • Insufficient food, mental anguish, agony and deep fear. • Continued on pg2
