Selangor Fruits Valley debacle ‘juices’ war of words By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

Wednesday 20 July 2011

THE finger-pointing has started. A day after The Malay Mail front-paged an expose on the failure of the Selangor Fruits Valley mega project, accusations were hurled between the previous and current State governments. While ex-Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo has blamed the Pakatan Rakyat government for allowing the “Fruits Basket for the World” initiative to turn into a disgrace, they, on the other hand, claimed the fault lies with the former. “It is the current MB’s (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) fault,” Dr Mohamad Khir told The Malay Mail. “Pe r h ap s the MB, who says

he is an expert on plantations, wants to turn the whole area into a oil palm plantation,” he said, taking a swipe at the former Guthrie supremo. However, Dr Mohamad Khir, who is currently facing a graft charge at the Shah Alam Sessions Court, said the Selangor Fruits Valley cannot be turned into a oil palm plantation as the area had been gazetted as a “revenue forest”. “The land was originally gazetted as a permanent forest but when the State exco chose to open up the land back in 2000, an area of 8,000ha, we decided to regazette it as a revenue forest. This means only cash crops can be planted there, from fruits to rubber trees.

“Unfortunately, oil palm is not listed as a cash crop,” he said in a telephone interview yesterday. Dr Mohamad Khir expressed surprise when asked to comment on the fate of the fruits valley, which was one of his administration’s golden projects. He claimed the State Assembly was recently told the project was on track and profitable. “Yaakop Sapari (Selangor Agriculture Modernisation, Natural Resources and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman) had told the Dewan that the project was making money.”
