Selangor Fruits Valley debacle ‘juices’ war of words By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

Wednesday 20 July 2011

THE finger-pointing has started. A day after The Malay Mail front-paged an expose on the failure of the Selangor Fruits Valley mega project, accusations were hurled between the previous and current State governments. While ex-Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo has blamed the Pakatan Rakyat government for allowing the “Fruits Basket for the World” initiative to turn into a disgrace, they, on the other hand, claimed the fault lies with the former. “It is the current MB’s (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) fault,” Dr Mohamad Khir told The Malay Mail. “Pe r h ap s the MB, who says

he is an expert on plantations, wants to turn the whole area into a oil palm plantation,” he said, taking a swipe at the former Guthrie supremo. However, Dr Mohamad Khir, who is currently facing a graft charge at the Shah Alam Sessions Court, said the Selangor Fruits Valley cannot be turned into a oil palm plantation as the area had been gazetted as a “revenue forest”. “The land was originally gazetted as a permanent forest but when the State exco chose to open up the land back in 2000, an area of 8,000ha, we decided to regazette it as a revenue forest. This means only cash crops can be planted there, from fruits to rubber trees.

“Unfortunately, oil palm is not listed as a cash crop,” he said in a telephone interview yesterday. Dr Mohamad Khir expressed surprise when asked to comment on the fate of the fruits valley, which was one of his administration’s golden projects. He claimed the State Assembly was recently told the project was on track and profitable. “Yaakop Sapari (Selangor Agriculture Modernisation, Natural Resources and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman) had told the Dewan that the project was making money.”

Asking readers to nominate the likely perpetrator, the poll resulted in Franco leading the field ahead of Christian Bale and Will Smith.

Plans turn rotten

By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

THE plan for the Selangor Fruits Valley was initially a comprehensive one, said former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo. "We had envisaged the park as part of an industry which included up and downstream activities. The fruit park was supposed to be conducted through contract farming methods to boost yield and efficiency for a viable fruit industry. But we also realised contract farming had failed in the past. "As for the export market, starfruits need to be of a certain size. Those too small or too big cannot be exported so our plan was to turn them into a fruit salad. Over-ripened fruits would be turned into juices, which has big export potential." The Selangor Pride-branded starfruit was supposed to be the main fruit planted at the park. It was learnt the cultivation of starfruits began in November 2002. About 17,000 starfruit trees of the B10 variety were planted on 250 acres and were expected to produce nine million starfruits a year. Dr Mohamad Khir said two

factories were supposed to be built in Puchong but when the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government came into power, the factories were sold. "So, our plan to have viable downstream activities were changed. When that part of the plan failed to take off, the whole plan unhinged." It was for these reasons the Selangor Fruits Valley venture failed, he said, adding another part of its initial plans was to recycle fruit rinds into compost to

'Disaster from the beginning'

Yesterday, we reported that checks by The Paper That Cares revealed the valley was not a tropical fruit paradise which its backers had claimed it to be. Our visit to the project site located along the road from Rawang to Batang Berjuntai showed there were no fruit trees as advertised on several government websites, and most of the land was barren. The boast the valley had the world's largest starfruit farm was not realised on site. Yaakob had denied the fruits valley had turned into a fiasco. Dr Mohamad Khir said: "Of course he is angry as he had told the Dewan a different story. If your report is correct, it shows he is not aware of what is happening on the ground. He must have been fed the wrong information by his officers."

scape shots, and highlighted activities such as tram rides and tours of various orchards. However, the park is still listed as a tourism destination on the Selayang Municipal Council website. Various photographs of the valley and its attractions, similar to those that had been featured on Tourism Malaysia's website, remained accessible online at Press time. Ironically, it was the council which had promised to take down the listing when alerted by The Malay Mail on Monday, but Tourism Malaysia did it first.

He said about RM5 million had been spent by the previous State government to develop the park. Dr Mohamad Khir claimed the Selangor Fruits Valley had managed to break even before his administration was voted out in the March 2008 general election. Two years earlier, the then Prime Minister Datuk Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had visited the park, previously dubbed the Golden Valley. When asked to respond to the ex-MB's claims, Abdul Khalid's political secretary Faekah Husin told The Paper That Cares: "Let Dr Mohamad Khir say whatever he wants — his time has passed. "One thing is for sure — he has failed to honour the trust given by the Selangor rakyat." Meanwhile, Selayang MP William Leong Jee Keen said: "It is at the border of my constituency. It was a disaster from the beginning under Khir Toyo's watch."

be sold to nurseries and farms. Dr Mohamad Khir said he did not understand PR's fear of taking loans for the Stateowned business. "When you take loans, it forces your personnel to be more efficient, thus challenging them to increase profits. "Tell me, which company does not take loans and only uses internal funds for its business?"

BARREN: The empty Fruits Valley

An attraction no more TOURISM Malaysia has deleted the Selangor Fruits Valley from its list of State tourist attractions on their website, mere hours after The Malay Mail's expose on the Selangor Fruits Valley fiasco hit the streets. A spokesman claimed they were unaware of the park's status but promised it would be de-listed if found it had been closed to the public. Checks on the website at 4pm yesterday showed it was no longer listed. The Tourism Malaysia website had showcased 13 photographs of the Fruits Valley, including land-

AN Iranian drug syndicate using Pos Malaysia services by hiding ketamine in rolledup painting scroll tubes was uncovered by the Customs Department last week at the KL International Airport (KLIA). "On July 13, our officers scanned a box containing seven painting scroll tubes and found 4kg of ketamine powder worth RM72,000 hidden inside. It was the first time we came across such a modus operandi," KLIA Customs director Datuk M. Govinden told a Press conference yesterday at his headquarters. "The tubes, each about 1.5m long and made in China, were addressed to two houses in Sepang and Subang. We went to these addressed places and picked up two suspects aged 49 and 21, both locals. We believe an Iranian drug syndicate was responsible and the ketamine was meant for distribution here." Both suspects are unemployed and have been remanded until today to assist investigations. "We believe drug syndicates are resorting to Pos Malaysia's parcel delivery services as there is less 'red tape' compared to courier services," said Govinden. "Last Saturday, we seized

of the Plaza Idaman Shopping Complex in Setapak. Sentul district police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan said the suspect, wearing full-faced helmet and black jacket, used a hammer to smash the glass showcase at the shop and then scooped the jewellery into a bag. "The shop had just opened for the day. There

were no security guards or customers at the time, only four sales personnel," he said, adding the robber was also armed with a meat cleaver. The suspect has been remanded for questioning. The shop, which operates daily from 11am to 9.30pm, was closed to the public yesterday for repairs to the damaged glass show case but will reopen today. The entire loot was recovered. Police screening of Bersih 2.0 welcomed By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my

THE Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) has urged police to be transparent in their public screening of video footage of the July 9 rally here. "We welcome the police move to publicly screen video footages on the rally," said Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Wong Chin Huat when commenting on Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar's announcement yesterday that police findings on allegations of violence during the rally will be made public. "Since the IGP said police

will make public the findings, we hope he will reveal the truth and be transparent on the incident and not just use 'chosen' video material but also the footage available on the Internet. Everybody is aware that lies cannot be successfully defended in this age of the Internet." Wong also suggested that the police, during the public screening, allow the public to screen footage they have on the rally so as to establish the truth of what happened. At a Press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday, Ismail said

police were close to wrapping up investigations on allegations of police brutality during the Bersih 2.0 rally. Ismail said a special video screening session for members of the media would be held soon. "We will air videos for you to see. We will not hide anything from the public who have the right to know." Six special police committees will look into allegations of police brutality at the rally. "The committees have been working round-the-clock investigating all aspects of the rally.

They include interviews with police officers on duty that day," said Ismail. He also urged the public not to "jump the gun" on the matter and let police conclude their investigations first. "We also urge those with still pictures and videos on the rally to come forward to assist in our investigations." Those with information, still pictures and videos on the Bersih 2.0 rally can email them to pusatmediapdrm@rmp.gov.my or contact the police at 03-22668321 or 03-22668320.

No resolution yet for temporary school sports centre debacle By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

PARENTS and students will have to wait a little longer to know the situation concerning the Jalan Maran temporary school sports excellence centre, as the Education Ministry requires more time to look into the matter. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong said he will visit the sports hub — which will temporarily house students who had been training at Pusat Kecemerlangan Sukan Cochrane — but will only do so after he obtains a progress report on the situation. “Definitely, I will go to the centre and check the situation myself,” Wee told The Malay Mail after he launched the IBM School of Excellence at Tunku Abdul Rahman College yesterday. “But I need to see the report

on the situation from ministry officials first.” The sports hub — formerly the Seri Kota Teacher’s Training College — is a temporary sports centre for KL’s sports students, and it replaces the Jalan Cochrane Sports Excellence Centre which will be demolished to make way for redevelopment. The temporary centre at Jalan Maran, however, has received a lot of flak from parents as well as the KL Schools Sports Council as it is incomplete and lacks many facilities, most notably, a football field. When asked how it is possible for a sport excellence centre not to have a training field, Wee said: “I cannot comment until I receive the report.” The Malay Mail visited the temporary sports hub in Jalan Maran last month and found

many things lacking, aside from the all-important training field. It only has one outdoor sepak takraw court, a single outdoor multipurpose court and basketball court and an indoor badminton court. Some doors were not yet mounted and safety grills were not installed. Its hostel did not have furniture including beds. Sources claimed the building had not been issued a Certificate of Fitness. The Jalan Cochrane centre, for long the largest state-level training facility in the country, is making way for the construction of My Rapid Transit tracks and shopping malls. The newer centre will be built at Jalan Cochrane as well, but will only be 3.2ha in size, remarkably smaller than the

current centre which is 5ha and boasts two football fields, two basketball courts, three sepak takraw courts, a hall, dining area, gymnasium and a hostel for 400 students. Ironically, the older centre underwent an RM5 million renovation less than two years ago which saw the installation of a drainage system for the football field, an upgrade of the dining hall and the building of a warden’s room. In April this year, Wee had told The Malay Mail the new centre will be “equivalent” to the previous one, “if not better”.

The festival would be at the 1Malaysia Cultural Village and around Menara Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, Muzium Telekom will hold its annual Durian Festival from Monday to July 27. Visitors are free to eat their fill of durians, rambutans and mangosteens in the Makan Sehingga Kenyang (Eat Until Full) promotions at RM20 for adults and RM12 for children. Entrance is free and the festive times are from 8am to 10pm.

Sticky situation persists despite ad-removal operations By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my

ILLEGAL advertisements have been a perennial problem and this prompted Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan to accompany Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s operation yesterday to take a closer look at the issue. “Most of these illegal banners and sticker advertisements posted by the roadside and on public property involve loan sharks and libido-enhancing drugs,” Saravanan told reporters during the advertisementremoval operation at Desa Setapak, Teratai Mewah and Taman Bunga Raya. "City Hall has been removing these advertisements everyday but the problem continues." Saravanan said City Hall has submitted 400 telephone numbers to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) last year for it to terminate the telephone lines listed in the advertisements. “We have not received feedback from MCMC but deactivating the telephone lines is more effective than removing the stickers. MCMC has to form a special unit to terminate these telephone lines.” He also called on non-governmental organisations to

play a bigger role in campaigns to remove these stickers and increase public awareness on the issue. In the first half of this year, City Hall took down 22,785 illegal advertisements in the city, with Cheras recording the highest number (44,829), followed by Batu (37,707) and Bandar Tun Razak (33,321). Last year, City Hall took down 458,811 of these advertisements, the highest number being Bandar Tun Razak (68,811), followed by Bukit Bintang (65,212) and Wangsa Maju (56,034).

"When I moved into this area in 1995, a green lung with trees had already been designated to act as a retaining wall to reduce the noise and air pollution from the traffic along the nearby Bukit Jalil highway. Prasarana clearly did not bother to get our opinion. An LRT station should be at least 700 metres away from houses." Wong's neighbour, 49-yearold housewife Faezah Ahmad, said going ahead with station No. 5 in their area will worsen traffic congestion and pollution. "If station No. 5 is allowed, outsiders will be parking their cars in front of our houses. We are also worried that criminal activities might increase." BK3 pro-tem committee

Decision made to allow staging of MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

FAEKAH HUSIN, political secretary to Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, says the staging of the MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia 2011 will go on as scheduled despite protests from PAS. "The show will go on. There is no need for people to question anymore if the concert will be cancelled or not. The decision has been made," was Faekah's response when contacted by The Malay Mail regarding the staging of this concert at i-City, Shah Alam, this Sunday. Faekah also criticised PAS Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad and PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi for opposing the concert. "I really don't know why they are bringing up the issue of the concert being too close to the fasting month as Ramadan is expected to start in August. "Also, the show is being held in an industrial area and not a residential area as they claim. The concert venue is far away from places of worship such as the Blue Mosque and the Sul-

sides, we live in a multiracial society and the MTV World Stage is merely an entertainment event for all to enjoy." On Monday, Khalid Samad said he opposed the concert

Nasrudin said PAS has never been agreeable to concerts which allegedly encourage immoral activities and indecent behaviour. He also said PAS will continue to protest against such concerts. The concert on Sunday is the third consecutive year it will be staged in Malaysia. The first two took place at Sunway Lagoon Resort on Aug 15, 2009, featuring seven artistes and July 31, 2010, with four acts, including American singer Katy Perry and South Korean group, Wonder Girls. Feb 13, 2010: Rihanna PAS called for a cancellation of her concert, saying Rihanna's performances were unsuitable due to her daring outfits and raunchy dances. They also said inviting the Barbados-born singer, who resides in the United States, would be akin to supporting US ally Israel, which does not have diplomatic relations with Malaysia. After her scheduled concert in Johor Baru the previous week was cancelled by a district officer there, the Indonesian dangdut star came to the city to try her luck but this was fiercely protested by PAS which said she “overacts” in a suggestive manner when on stage and her performances are inappropriate for youngsters. City council will seek police help to ease congestion in Subang Jaya SUBANG JAYA residents living near an international school in Jalan SS 15/7A are appealing to the authorities to resolve the traffic situation along Persiaran Kewajipan, next to the school. One resident, who only wishes to be known as NG, says triple-parking is common because of school buses parked along the road and parents dropping off their children, resulting in congestion that can stretch for up to 3km, as far as Sunway Pyramid. "The traffic usually intensifies in the morning from 8 to 9 and in the afternoon from 2 to 4," complains the 60-year-old retiree, who says the school often puts up plastic cones along the main road to reserve parking space for buses. ALVIN TEY, 20, a college student living in a residential area nearby, says he is often awakened by the blaring of car horns in the morning. "Even when we go out to eat, we get stuck in the traffic," he tells Hotline. TEY says the school allows cars into the premises, one by one, to drop off or pick up the children. This leads to congestion outside. "The parents comply because they are concerned for their children's safety. Personally, I think they should just drop them off at the main road and leave."

WEE: Complaints made to MP and the police

He says that at times, more than 10 buses and a number of taxis are parked by the roadside. Retiree WEE SENG KEE, 65, who has been living next

to the school since 1977, tells Hotline the problem intensified after the school expanded six to eight years ago. He says motorists turn the one-way street adjacent to the school into two-way traffic during peak hours. WEE says complaints have been made to the MP as well as the police but the problem remains. "How can vehicles enter the area in case of an emergency such as a fire?" he asks. "It is also a problem for the ambulances at the nearby Sime Darby Medical Centre."

● SUBANG JAYA Municipal Council (MPSJ) public relations assistant director Asfarizal Abdul Rashid

says the council will request police help to divert the flow of traffic. He acknowledges that the council had received complaints on the traffic situation in the past. "Our best hope for now is to rely on the police to help divert the flow of traf-

fic." Asfarizal tells Hotline a check with the council’s engineering department shows there are no plans for a traffic diversion scheme. "We urge the police to issue summonses for those who double-park," he says.

Asfarizal also feels that parents picking up their children from the school are the main cause of the congestion as opposed to those dropping their children off. He says asking the parents to drive in one by one is not a good idea.

Slowdown in Internet download speed ANTHONY LOW of Johor wanted speedier, uninterrupted Internet access, so he signed up for P1 WiMAX's P1 Home Pro package which promises up to 4.8Mbps download speed. "I subscribed to this service 10 months ago and, initially, everything was perfect. I was happy with the download speed. However, recently, the speed started to deteriorate,"

from the P1 4G signal station and/or the time of the day he uses the service. "P1 has contacted LOW and is following up closely with him to help restore his surfing experience.”

When contacted, LOW expresses his dissatisfaction with P1’s response. "When I started using the service, the speed was up to 4.8Mbps. How can it deteriorate if I have not changed the location of the modem? Nothing

not guaranteed but subjected to the “best effort” of the company. LOW wants an explanation from P1 WiMAX. has changed and yet the problem exists," he says. “I am not paying RM159 a month for this kind of speed. Is this their 'best effort'?" LOW is considering terminating the package.

UniFi connection restored FOR more than a month, ASOK NAIR's office in Bandar Sunway, which subscribes to Telekom Malaysia's (TM) UniFi service, has been experiencing disruption. Calls to TM have gone unanswered or promises to send a contractor over have not been carried out, ASOK says. "No one is picking up calls at the customer careline, too. On two occasions, I held onto the phone for 14 and 20 minutes without any success."

After waiting for two weeks, ASOK decided to go to TM's branch in Taipan, USJ. "I told them about the service disruption and the unanswered calls. I was shocked when the staff told me that sometimes, even they cannot get through when they call the line. "I had to 'force' a customer service staff there to pass me his personal number so I can just call him instead." Despite lodging a complaint at the branch, the

problem is still not solved. "TM should get their act together or tell us in writing they are unable to provide this service and terminate our contract," ASOK says. "It is shameful that our so-called premier telecommunications company is unable to promise even basic services, and worse, unable to address a complaint quickly and efficiently."

● A SPOKESMAN for Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) says a technical

team visited ASOK's office on July 13 and found his problem stemmed from faulty TM equipment outside, which affected his UniFi connectivity. "The technicians have repaired the equipment and reconfigured his connection accordingly. His connection has been restored and he can now utilise his UniFi and telephone services normally." When contacted, ASOK confirms his connection has been restored.

No ID for 17 years Sabah resident reapplies for card but NRD wants proof

MADJIRI SALAA of Beaufort, Sabah, has been forced to go on with his daily routine without his identity card since he lost it in 1994. He has been going back and forth to the National Registration Department (NRD) in Kota Kinabalu to try and obtain a new card. "I was born in Sabah in 1960. Some time in the 1970s, I moved back to Pakistan with my father but returned to Beaufort in 1979," he tells Hotline. In 1980, MADJIRI applied for a Malaysian identity card. "I was issued a blue identification card. has still not replaced his card and has not explained why.

MADJIRI wants to know when or if he will ever get his identity card.

MADJIRI has re-applied for an identity card and attended an interview at the Kota Kinabalu NRD last Oct 12. "His application will be processed in accordance with the law. Approval is up to the discretion of higher panels," she says. "Once a decision is made, MADJIRI will be notified in writing as per the address on his application form." Janisah says the process can take up to six months if MADJIRI has provided the necessary doc-

uments. "Unfortunately, the complainant again failed to provide the documents. He has only given some supporting letters," she says, adding that the department does not issue identification cards or MyKad based on supporting letters by any party. "MADJIRI will have to provide sufficient proof of citizenship documentation or his application will be cancelled again." When contacted, MADJIRI says he cannot provide his dead parents' identification documents as he has no idea where they are. He says he does not have the other documents requested by the NRD but he will keep pursuing his case with them.

al Registration Department public relations officer Janisah Mohd Noor says they are aware of MADJIRI's case. She says it is still pending. Asked about the delay, Janisah says: "The application made by MADJIRI on Aug 8, 1994, had been cancelled because he was unable to produce relevant documents to the NRD. "Since MADJIRI claims he had travelled to Pakistan and returned, he must have had some kind of identification with him at the time." Jainisah confirms that

Malaysia put up a good fight against Liverpool (July 17)

Unsporting Malaysians Tough time for disabled fans at match against Liverpool

MALAYSIA may be a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and may have enacted the Persons With Disabilities Act 2008 (Act 685) but, in reality, our laws, society and institutions fail to commit to the genuine inclusion of disabled individuals in all aspects of living. At no time was this more evident to me than during the Liverpool FC vs Malaysian XI match on Saturday, when I was not allowed to park at the designated parking space for the disabled or even allowed to approach the entrance to allow my disabled friend to disembark from my car. Our polite request for access to the parking space for the disabled was dismissed by the traffic police stationed around the National Stadium, who told

us in no uncertain terms the disabled was not allowed to park in the stadium car park as the entire parking area was reserved for VVIPs and members of royalty. The event management company personnel and traffic police shrugged off our questions with an air of impatience and insensitivity, and the unspoken message seemed to be that the disabled should know their own limitations and should not have come to watch a sport they could not participate in. We ended up having to park over 1km away in front of the Astro headquarters and had to walk to the National Stadium. My friend was exhausted and in considerable pain and distress when we finally arrived. To make matters worse, the

The most important part of all was Malaysia's and the Vatican's commitment towards surmounting negative forces that use religion to justify acts of terrorism by employing the powers of reason and moderation. I was also glad to read that the Holy See recognises Malaysia’s commitment towards promoting moderation as a global doctrine. I am sure the ties will please many Christians in Malaysia and bound to forge greater religious peace and harmony in our plural society. Bulbir Singh

It's fine to cheer both teams

FIRST of all, congratulations are in order to the Malaysian team for putting up a good fight against Liverpool over the weekend. It was a momentous display of sportsmanship by both teams. I have to disagree with Lee's opinion (The Malay Mail, July 18) that Malaysian football fans are unreliable

because they rooted for both Liverpool and Malaysia during Saturday's game. I believe this is a healthy show of support because despite the fact the majority of the fans were wearing Liverpool jersies, they still showed patriotism and support for the Malaysian team whenever they scored. You cannot blame the

Excellent game and excellent crowd I HAVE to disagree with Lee who claimed Malaysian football fans are unrealiable and flip-flop over which team to support during Saturday's match. It is not a show of disloyalty. I believe our fans were being sporting.

After all, it is not everday you get to watch your favourite EPL team play live. I thought our football fans were cool for rooting for both sides. Excellent game and excellent crowd, too. Nick Arthur

Arsenal fan club should know better Kuala Lumpur and played against the Malaysian team last week. I place the blame on Arsenal FC Supporters Club Malaysia (AFCSM), which should have had a record of

passionate one but it is, in essence, feudalistic. When the need to impress the wealthy and powerful in our society overrides the safety needs and basic rights of our disabled citizens, we know we have a lot of soulsearching to do.

KL Rooting for Malaysia and Liverpool (July 17)

IT was reported that S. Kathiravale officiated Arsenal Football Club's first visit to Malaysia 36 years ago. What saddens me is that he was completely ignored when Arsenal paid a visit to

no sincere effort to ensure the disabled have reasonable access to the said infrastructure, not when the disabled are barred from parking at the disabled parking zone and have to struggle to get a seat at the disabled seating area. Malaysian society tries to pass itself off as a com-

such a prominent individual and officially invited him to meet the Arsenal squad. I am disappointed with the AFCSM committee for this oversight. It is about time the club

kept a record of all those who had close contact with Arsenal over the years. Such Malaysians must be honoured and extended due respect. Anandh

fans for wanting to wear the Reds' jersies because it is not everyday that these fans are able to see their favourite EPL team 'face to face', so to speak. At the same time, it has also been a long time that we have fans rooting for the national team. Are not all these positive developments for our foot-

ball? Of course, we have not reached the level of 'Super Mokh' but whatever have been achieved are commendable and our team deserves every honour they receive. In the end, the most important thing is everyone there enjoyed the game. Mokhtar

Unfair to label fans I THINK it is unfair to label our football fans as being unreliable just because they rooted for both Liverpool and Malaysia. It was a friendly match and those who were there were both Liverpool and Malaysia fans.

What did you expect them to do? Boo the Malaysian team like those at the Arsenal game? The question of loyalty never should have been raised. Kamal

Wendi Murdoch's stunning left hook ON a day he called the most humble in his life, things turned downright humiliating for Rupert Murdoch who was hit by a foam-pie thrower, while his wife Wendi jumped up to attack his assailant. The tension was high as the global media baron faced a three-hour grilling by British lawmakers on the phone-hacking scandal at his News of the World title, which has engulfed Britain's press, politicians and police. The atmosphere at the parliamentary committee hearing exploded when a scruffily

dressed man sprang up from the public gallery and tried to slap the 80-year-old in the face with a plate of white foam. The News Corporation chairman and chief executive, rooted in his seat, could do little to stop the attack. However, his wife, sitting just behind him, sprang into action and took a full-blooded swing at the attacker, clouting him on the head and managing to push the plate of gunk into the assailant's face. Chinese-born American Wendi Deng, Murdoch's 42-year-old third wife, grap-

pled with the assailant well before the sole policeman in the room got to him. The attacker was later revealed as "activist and comedian" Jonathan May-Bowles, 26. Murdoch was appearing before the Culture, Media and Sport committee panel of lawmakers from parliament's lower House of Commons.Members of the committee apologised for the assault with opposition lawmaker TomWatson finishing by saying: "Mr Murdoch, your wife has a very good left hook." — AFP

Unrest in Xinjiang

BEIJING

20 die as Uighur protesters and police clash TWENTY protesters from China's minority Uighur community were killed in a clash with police in the ethnically tense northwestern region of Xinjiang, a Uighur exile group said yesterday. State media quoted an official in the region calling Monday's clash a "terrorist" attack and said four people including a police officer were killed when a crowd set upon a police station in the remote city of Hotan. But Uighur activists called it an outburst of anger by ordinary members of the mainly Muslim ethnic minority, and accused authorities of attempt-

ing to block information on the deadly incident. The Germany-based World Uyghur Congress, citing sources in Xinjiang, said security forces beat 14 people to death and shot dead six others during the unrest. "The Chinese authorities should immediately cease their systematic oppression to prevent a further escalation of the situation," said Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the group. The Xinhua news agency quoted an unnamed local official saying police had "gunned down" 14 people who attacked the police station, though the report did not say clearly whether they had been killed.

Six civilians were taken hostage in the attack, Xinhua said. Xinjiang has been plagued by violent unrest in recent years, culminating in savage Uighur attacks on members of China's dominant Han group in the regional capital Urumqi in July 2009. Raxit said the latest incident erupted after a group of Uighurs tried to seize a number of police officers as leverage in their demands for the release of family members detained previously. The attackers also set fire to the police station, located near the city's bustling bazaar, reports said. — AFP

Final homecoming for Atlantis

THE crew of Atlantis undocked yesterday from the International Space Station, wrapping up the last visit by a US shuttle to the orbiting outpost and setting its sights on an emotional homecoming. With a spectacular orbital sunrise illuminating a vessel in the sunset of its career, Atlantis maneuvered away from the ISS at 0628 GMT about 350 kilometres above the Pacific Ocean. "Thanks so much for hosting us. It's a great station, and it's been an absolute pleasure," Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson said of his crew's eight-day stay at the ISS, closing the book on the storied relationship between the two iconic spacecraft. "We'll miss you guys.

Godspeed," space station flight engineer Ronald Garan called out as Atlantis floated away. As the age of the shuttle, which has carried US astronauts into space longer than any other vessel, drew to a close after 37 dramatic rendezvous with the ISS, their crews on Monday exchanged embraces and kisses before shutting the hatches separating them for a final time. Atlantis blasted off July 8 with a four-member crew, lugging the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module and several tons of supplies to the ISS to help sustain the outpost for a year. The shuttle is scheduled for a predawn touch-down tomorrow at 0956 GMT at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. — AFP

Spaniard reckons he has found scoring touch again

Wednesday 20 July 2011

IT HAS not been easy for Fernando Torres, the enforced break from the game at the tailend of last season doing no favour to his mood or proficiency in front of goal. Chelsea’s £50 million (RM243m) striker described last season as his worst ever, saying he would prefer to forget it. Torres, who scored just once last season following his big money move from Anfield in January, will be hoping for a positive start when the new season begins. He may, however, have received the boost he has been looking for. Though this won’t count when the goals are being tallied, Torres got his name on the scoresheet against newly-promoted League One side Wycombe Wanderers in a warm-up at Cobham on Tuesday. And before they flew out to Kuala Lumpur, Chelsea beat Portsmouth 1-0, the goal gifted by Tal Ben-Haim, the former Chelsea defender, who headed into his own goal.

Torres reckoned that was the kickstart he needed to get back on the goalscoring trail. He has the opportunity to cement his confidence during Chelsea’s tour to the Far East, starting with the stop in Kuala Lumpur before flying to Bangkok and Hong Kong, where they will play in the Asia Trophy. Torres has played in this tournament before, though in Liverpool colours, in 2007. “I missed a penalty, and the other one was Yossi Benayoun,” Torres said to Chelsea FC website. “I remember it because I didn’t play in the first game against South China because I didn’t have the clearance from my transfer. But I travelled just in case, not expecting to play in that game. “I was in the stands and was sitting in my seat to watch the game with Portsmouth when some people from Liverpool called me back and said I could play, so I changed, played and missed a penalty so we lost the

in a 1-1 draw, and he believes competitive football in pre-season prepares players for the tougher task ahead. Torres and his teammates will get the much-needed competition especially in Hong Kong, where the tournament also features Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and a Hong Kong division One side. “I’m feeling good, it’s a new season, a new start for me. It was a difficult four months last season. “Now I’m already settled and happy, feeling sharper and I could enjoy my holidays in the summer after five years without a break. I’m happier after some time with my family and a rest and I feel ready to start the season.”

The Malay Mail Wednesday 20 JULY, 2011

Terry recounts ‘first’ title CHELSEA captain John Terry has somewhat a soft spot for Malaysia. The no-nonsense skipper, who has led the club to a host of titles since the dawn of the Roman Abramovich revolution, had after all lifted his first title as the club’s skipper at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in 2003. The Blues have gone on great strides since then, having added three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Carling Cups to their trophy cabinet, in addition to reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2008. However, Terry believes that the team’s first taste of success, winning the Premier League Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur eight years ago, was the lucky charm which started

the ball rolling for the club. “It probably sounds funny to some people but it was the first trophy that we won as a group and it was the start of a very good period for us. “It was special at the time. Obviously looking back now at what we’ve done, it loses its significance and rightly so. But if there is a trophy to go and win, then we want to win it. And that’s pre-season as well, regardless of how big or small it is,” Terry said, admitting that it was exciting to come back to Malaysia since their last visit in 2008. Chelsea will play the Malaysian national team at the same Bukit Jalil Stadium tomorrow, followed by a match against Thailand on Sunday, before flying to Hong Kong. And if what the feisty Eng-

land international claims is anything to go by, then fans are in for a real treat. Terry said although the matches might be a friendly on paper, Chelsea would be going all out for the win. “As a player you always want to win games, and it’s no different who we’ll be playing, be it the Malaysians, Thais or the Hong Kong side, we are going there to win. “Despite it being a pre-season warm-up, we should be in good condition by then. So, we don’t need to worry about the other teams looking fitter or sharper than us. The main thing is we know come Day One of the season we’ll be ready to go,” Terry said, adding that he was just as hyped up to meet the fans as he was the first time.

Cole reckons pre-season in Asia will help titles assault

CHELSEA’S Asia Tour will benefit the club in their hunt for glory in the coming season, said one of the world’s best leftbacks Ashley Cole (pic). The 30-year-old English lad, who was with the team during their visit here in 2008, is optimistic that the tough preparations in the continent during pre-season would serve well when the English Premier League kicks off next month. “Going to Malaysia in 2008 was really good, but I remember it was hot. The training is hard anyway but I found it harder to do the work. The humidity makes it a real challenge but when we came back afterwards we started the season really well and were unbeaten for a long time before we dropped off a bit. “Asia was a good place to go. I remember sleeping a lot and having a couple of races on the plane to keep us amused on the way out there,” said Cole whose former team Arsenal beat Malaysia 4-0 in the curtain raiser of the Asia Tour at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last Wednesday. Cole said pre-season was always hard and not “every player’s favourite time of the year” but their jaunt to the Far East certainly made it more fun. “It’s hard to pick out a positive of pre-season. We do train hard but I guess it is enjoyable most of the time, deep down. You’re playing football which you love, and it’s nice to see the guys again after a break. But it’s not my favourite time of the year. “Running without the ball is really bad. But credit to the staff here, we don’t really do that. We use a lot of the ball and that helps so much in the heat,” the London lad confessed, adding that the Asian weather was more suited for holidaying, rather than for dwelling it out on the pitch. Three years ago, the Blues beat the Malaysian team 2-0,

courtesy of goals by prolific striker Nicolas Anelka and Cole himself. Goals have come few and far between for Cole, scoring just six in 149 appearances since making his Chelsea debut in 2006. But he is hoping to celebrate with his fans here by giving the Malaysian side a sense of dejavu by putting one at the back of the net again. “The fans are crazy. You expect to go there and not be noticed, that you could walk down the street and nobody will look at you or recognise you. But to be honest, it’s the opposite and that just shows how big Chelsea are around the world. So, it’s great that we can go and play there. “But what would be greater is I get to score again,” he said with a smirk, before adding: “It would be nice to celebrate in front of so many faces you don’t always see. People love football everywhere and you see how passionate they are about Chelsea and they know their stuff as well. Over there

I think they get to watch a lot of the Premier League on TV, maybe three games a weekend or more, so every team is shown a lot which is good.”

KUALA LUMPUR

Surviving the Roman empire Will Villas-Boas be just another casualty?

CALL it what you want — ironic, surreal, uncanny. The fact will remain though the lion that dominates the Chelsea crest actually reflects the state of the club today. The managers who have worked at the club since Roman Abramovich took over have been like cats on a hot tin roof. That was in June 2003 when the Russian oligarch extended his tentacles to take over Chelsea. Flamboyant and respected managers, starting from Jose Mourinho, were soon to feel Abramovich’s wrath. Consider this: In 2007, there were rumours of a feud between Abramovich and Mourinho, mostly about players and particularly about Andriy Shevchenko. On Sept 20 that year, Mourinho quit. Former Israel coach and Chelsea’s director of football, Avram Grant, was named as his replacement. Grant never did get along with Mourinho. Grant was even told by Mourinho not to interfere in team affairs. On May 24 the following year, Grant was removed. About a month later, in came Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, who lasted till February 2009. Guss Hiddink stepped in for the interim before the reins were handed over to Carlo Ancelotti. When the 2010-2011 season ended, so did Ancelotti’s tenure with the Blues. And now Andre Villas-Boas. What is his fate? What is his future really like with Chelsea? No one knows. Frankly, not even the almost-eccentric Russian billionaire. But one thing is for certain, Villas-Boas is at the mercy of his paymaster. Villas-Boas was FC Poto manager when Abramovich agreed to pay the £13 million (RM63m) release clause in his contract. Chelsea are paying him £4.5 million-a-year to be their new manager. The 33-year-old was once Mourinho’s assistant but is a great admirer of Pep Guar-

diola’s on-field soccer philosophies. The Russian is not the only one he

now has to watch his back against. Falling in the same age-group as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, VillasBoas will have to prove that he is not at the end of Abramovich’s strings, that he would be the boss who will decide which players would play and what strategies he would use. Abramovich is infamous for making his preferences known to managers. And he has to also contend with his captain, the wily John Terry, who epitomises player power. Terry has the ears of the players who matter at Chelsea. Please Abramovich, half the battle is won. Please Terry, the other half is also in the pocket. And so you have it — will Villas-Boas be making popular decisions or correct decisions? Is Villas-Boas here to stay at Stamford Bridge or is he just another drifter, a convenient rag-doll for Abramovich to play with and discard when he tires of him? Only time will tell......

Mourinho unexpectedly left Chelsea on Sept 20, 2007 “by mutual consent,” although there had been a series of disagreements with Chairman Roman Abramovich. Mourinho left as the most successful manager in Chelsea’s history, having won six trophies for the club in three years. He was also undefeated in all home league games. Avram Grant succeeded Mourinho as Chelsea manager but failed to win any trophies in his year in charge, although he reached the final Grant’s Chelsea beat Liverpool 3–2 (4–3 on aggregate) on April 30, 2008, to advance to the UEFA Champions League Final, something they failed to achieve under Mourinho. Chelsea drew 1–1 with Manchester United in the final, only to lose out on the European Cup in a penalty shootout which United won 6–5. In the heavy rain, John Terry slipped on his team’s fifth penalty, clipping the ball off the post and wide. Had he scored, Chelsea

Scola r i took over as manager on July 1, 2008. With this appointment, Scolari became the first World Cup winning manager to manage in the Premier League. Scolari was sacked as Chelsea manager on Feb 9, 2009 after a run of poor form culminating in a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool followed by frustrating 0–0 home draw with Hull City.

JOSE MOURINHO 2004 - 2007 of the Champions League and League Cup. Grant’s Chelsea also finished second in the Premier League.

AVRAM GRANT 2007 - 2008 would have won. On May 24, 2008, Chelsea announced that Grant’s contract had been terminated. Just as his predecessor José Mourinho had done, Grant completed his period as Chelsea manager without losing a single home game in the Premier League.

LUIZ FELIPE SCOLARI 2008 - 2009 The club’s stated reason for his removal was that “the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.” Scolari’s replacement for the remainder of the 2008-2009 season was Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who managed the Russian national team at the same time.

CARLO ANCELOTTI 2009-2011 Chelsea sacked manager Carlo Ancelotti, who brought the Premier League and FA Cup Double to Stamford Bridge in his first season at the club, after a trophyless second campaign. “Chelsea can confirm that Ancelotti parted company

with the club (Sunday, 22 May),” said a Chelsea statement. “However, this season’s performances have fallen short of expectations and the club feel the time is right to make this change ahead of next season’s preparations.”

A goal to behold HAIRUDDIN OMAR: NATIONAL PLAYER

Striker wants to get back into national team By HARESH DEOL hareshdeol@mmail.com.my

IT WAS JULY 25, 2003. The 21,000-odd fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium were at the edge of their seats. Rosdi Talib ran to the right of the field to take the cornerkick. Rosdi was determined to see his shot fall in place after Chelsea took the lead through Frank Lampard three minutes earlier. Rosdi took a couple of steps back and quickly ran towards the ball to perform the kick. Teammate Hairuddin Omar suddenly appeared from the middle of the field as he leaped over the then England Under-21 John Terry in the penalty area and headed the ball into goal. Malaysia held Chelsea 1-1 at halftime. However, the Blues went on to score three goals, courtesy of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (70th minute), Eidur Gudjohnsen (83rd) and Glen Johnson (85th) in the second half to win 4-1. Hairuddin had another chance to play against the English side in 2008. Under the guidance of former national coach B. Satianathan, the national side lost 2-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium. Today, Hairuddin is eager to produce another memorable performance that will enable him to better his 2003 effort. “I can still picture the corner-kick even till today,” said Hairuddin.

In fact, he is bent on showing national coach Datuk K.Rajagobal and Malaysian fans that he is still one of the best players in the country. “I want to prove that I am still able to contribute. I hope coach Raja and the rest of Malaysia would be able to see my true capabilities (tomorrow).” “Win or lose, I want to score. That’s my personal goal for the match.”

It’s been eight years but Rosdi’s kick from the far right followed by my jump over Terry and the goal…,” he paused before breaking into a smile. “I really wish I can score against them again this time around. I wonder if Terry still remembers that (incident).” Hairuddin, who turns 32 on Sept 29, has been called up to beef up the Harimau Muda A squad that will play Chelsea. The other experienced players in the team include Joseph Kalang Tie and Amri Yahyah. “The team’s been great. You can’t expect us to do much as we’ve been only together for slightly over a week but it’s been fun. “The morale is good and these young players have a bright future,” added the

World class line-up promises world class exhibition

IF YOU thought the matches against Arsenal and Liverpool were sizzlers, be prepared when the Malaysian Selection take on Chelsea tomorrow. ProEvents chief executive officer Julian Kam (right) is confident that with Chelsea sending their best squad to Malaysia — with the likes of Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres, both of whom will be playing in Malaysia for the first time, as well as John Terry and Frank Lampard, fans would certainly get their money’s worth. “It’s fantastic news and we all appreciate Chelsea’s effort to bring their best players to Malaysia,” Kam said. “Not only Chelsea fans will be interested to watch the match as it involves players who have set not only the EPL alight, but also other

major competitions such as the Champions League and the World Cup. “No matter which team you support, all football fans should come and support Chelsea as well as the Malaysia XI. I’m confident the stadium will be packed and it’s going to be a real party atmosphere tomorrow.” Other big names in the star-studded lineup are Nicolas Anelka, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda, Petr Cech and Yossi Benayoun. The only notable absentees from the team are versatile midfielder Michael Essien and Brazilians David Luiz and Ramires. The match against the Malaysia Tigers will also see new manager Andres Villas-Boas take charge of the Blues for the third time ever since the Portuguese took over the reins from

Carlo Ancelotti. Chelsea had earlier played Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth in warm-up friendlies. Villas-Boas said fans could expect an entertaining display from the English Premier League powerhouse, promising that every one of his stars would get the chance to strut their stuff on the field. He added it was the least the club could do to repay the support from the local Chelsea supporters. “It’s important for the club to expand in the Asian market as people love us so much there as they love us back home. So, it is important for us to be in Malaysia and show ourselves a little bit to them as well,” he said. Villas-Boas also said he anticipated an overwhelming turnout on matchday

as Chelsea had packed the stadium during their last visit to Malaysia in 2008. A big sea of blue waves is expected to fill Bukit Jalil Stadium tomorrow, so VillaBoas is looking forward to give fans only the best. “Coming back to Asia is important for us. It shortens the distance with the Asian supporters who are following us from a huge distance. It is important for them to feel we have respect for them and we are able to feel their heat. “I’m sure they will give us tremendous support for the game here.”

Mikel: Asia the best

KUALA LUMPUR

Midfielder believes tour to Far East better than friendlies in Europe

CHELSEA’S John Obi Mikel reckons that the club’s matches during the Asia Tour will prove to be more important than playing against club outfits in Europe. The Blues played two friendly matches during this pre-season, beating Wycombe 3-0 before snatching a 1-0 win against just-relegated Portsmouth. But the midfielder said the matches against their Far East counterparts have got more potential to bear fruits during season proper. “We have played a couple of friendlies against Wycombe and Portsmouth already but I think the most important friendly matches

will be during the tour of Asia,” said the 24year-old. “We will be in Asia for a long time. Most importantly, what the manager has been doing since he came in is to bring everyone together and bond the team. This is what he has been working on and I think it’s paying off really well.” “It’s good for team spirit to be away together,” he said. “It’s something Mourinho used to do and did well, whereas the other managers since didn’t do so much. The new manager obviously has some fresh ideas.” The Nigerian believes that the Blues fans in Malaysia will get a

chance to watch every player in action, thanks to the depth of quality in the squad. “It is going to be a tough trip, but obviously if we go with the full squad then players can have rests and will probably not have to play all of every game, so we can come back in good condition and be ready and fresh for the start of the season, which is what the manager wants. “What matters most is what we do on the pitch and if we can carry the bond onto the pitch then everyone will want to play and work for each other and we can succeed together,” Obi Mikel said, before jok-

Drogba making up for lost time

CHELSEA’S Didier Drogba is eager to make his debut in Asia after having missed two of the club’s previous jaunts to the continent. A couple of knee injuries had forced the Ivorian to stay back in London while his teammates travelled to South Korea in 2005 and more recently, a 2008 tour of China and Malaysia. But it’s never too late for the forward as he prepares to line up against his Asian teams for the first time when the Blues play a Malaysian Selection tomorrow at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. And Drogba is hoping that there will not be major hiccups this time around. “This time I hope for no injuries and a good preseason. Injuries are the only thing that stops players being happy so that’s what I am hoping for.

“I didn’t go on the tour in 2008, I was injured, so I stayed at home. I don’t know what it will be like, but I think it will be friendly because we have a lot of fans in Asia and they often come here to show their support. So, I think it will be great,” said the 33-year-old. Drogba, who was Chelsea Player of the Year last year, added that it would be interesting to see what Asia and the fans here are all about. He said his Chelsea teammates, who had travelled with the team on previous visits to the Far East, had already made him a green-eyed monster through the stories they shared from their experiences. “It is interesting to see the way people see us, see football, and understand the game differently in different places. “In America it was something new for them and I

think in Asia it is more popular. At home in Africa, football is like a religion. People can be in the stadium hours before kick-off. It is completely different. “Europe is more normal, I guess, when you s p e a k about football. We play everywhere in Europe and for me that is normal and conventional. And so, it will be interesting to see what Asia and the fans there are like,” said Drogba who joined the Chelsea ranks in 2004.

ing the attention was always big in Asia. “Terry, Lampard and Drogba will get loads of attention but some of us can merge into the background!” Putting on a more serious face, Obi Mikel admitted that he was looking forward to return to Malaysia, a country he visited during Chelsea’s 2008 Asia Tour, saying he could still recall the Malaysians’ warm hospitality. “It’s a great experience. And they love us out there. The weather is always really hot, so we know it will be hard work. But it is great to see so many people giving us their support,” Obi Mikel said.

Past decade at the Bridge Shirt history

CHELSEA have always worn blue shirts, although they initially adopted a lighter shade than the current version, and unlike today wore white shorts and dark blue socks. The lighter blue was taken from the racing colours of then club president, Earl Cadogan. The light blue shirts were short-lived, however, and replaced by a royal blue version in 1912. In the 1960s, Chelsea manager Tommy Docherty changed the kit again, switching to blue shorts (which

SINCE the club’s foundation, Chelsea have had four main crests, though all underwent minor variations. In 1905, Chelsea adopted as their first crest the image of a Chelsea pensioner, which obviously contributed to the “pensioner” nickname, and remained for the next half-century, though it never appeared on the shirts. As part of Ted Drake’s modernisation of the club from 1952 onwards, he insisted that the pensioner badge be removed from the match day programme in order to change the club’s image and that a new crest be adopted. As a stop-gap, a temporary emblem comprising simply the initials C.F.C. was adopted for one year. In 1953, Chelsea’s crest was changed to an upright blue lion looking backwards and holding a staff, which was to endure for the next three decades. This crest was based on elements in the coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea with the “lion rampant regardant” taken from the arms of then club president Viscount Chelsea and the staff from the Abbots of Westminster, former Lords of the Manor of Chelsea. It also featured three red roses, to represent England, and two footballs. This was the first club badge to appear on shirts, since the policy of putting the crest on the shirts was only adopted in the early 1960s. In 1986, with Ken Bates now owner of the club, Chelsea’s crest was changed again as part of another attempt to modernise and to capitalise on new marketing opportunities. The new badge featured a more naturalistic non-

Since then, Chelsea have always worn white socks with their home kit apart from a short spell from 1985 to 1992, when blue socks were reintroduced. Chelsea’s traditional away colours are all yellow or all white with blue trim,

that the crest should be changed again in 2004. The new crest was officially adopted for the start of the 2005–06 season and marks a return to the older design of the blue heraldic lion holding a staff. As with previous crests, this one has appeared in various colours, including white and gold.

game in the 1960s, the team wore blue and black stripes, inspired by Inter Milan’s kit, again at Docherty’s behest. Other memorable away

kits include a mint green strip in the 1980s, a red and white checked one in the early 90s and a graphite and tangerine edition in the mid-1990s. Chelsea’s kit is currently manufactured by Adidas, which is contracted to supply the club’s kit from 2006 to 2018. The contract was extended on 22 October 2010. Previously, the kit was manufactured by Umbro (1968–81), Le Coq Sportif (1981–86), The Chelsea Collection (1986–87) and Umbro again (1987–2006). Chelsea’s first shirt sponsor

was Gulf Air, agreed midway through the 1983–84 season. Following that, the club were sponsored by Grange Farms, Bai Lin Tea and Italian company Simod before a long-term deal was signed with computer manufacturer Commodore International in 1989; Amiga, an off-shoot of Commodore, also appeared on the shirts. Chelsea were subsequently sponsored by Coors beer (1995–97), Autoglass (1997–2001) and Emirates Airline (2001–05). Chelsea’s current shirt sponsor is Samsung who took over the sponsorship from their mobile division in 2007–08.

RENAISSANCE: Gullit, Vialli and Zola (1996–2000) RUUD GULLIT was appointed playermanager for the 1996–97 season, and added several top-class players to the side, including European Cupwinning Juventus striker Gianluca Vialli, cultured French defender Frank Leboeuf and Italian internationals Gianfranco Zola (whose skill would make him a firm favourite with the crowd and see him become one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players) and Roberto Di Matteo (the latter for a club record £4,900,000). They were later joined by the powerful and prolific Uruguayan midfielder Gustavo Poyet and Norwegian “super-sub” Tore André Flo. With such players, it was under Gullit and his successor that Chelsea emerged as one of England’s top sides again and gained a reputation for playing a neat, entertaining and attractive passing game performed by technically gifted players, which was informally dubbed “sexy football”, though the club’s inconsistency against supposed “smaller” teams remained. Gullit capped an impressive first season in management by leading Chelsea to their highest league placing since 1990 (6th) and winning the FA Cup, ending the club’s 26-year wait for a major trophy. The most memorable match of the run was a 4th round comeback against Liverpool, in which Chelsea, inspired by Hughes, overturned a 2–0 half-time deficit to win 4–2. The 2–0 victory over Middlesbrough in the final at Wembley got off to a frantic start with Di Matteo scoring after 43 seconds; Eddie Newton’s late goal clinched it. The win was a happy end to a season which had looked to be dominated by sadness after the death in October of popular director and financial benefactor Matthew Harding in a helicopter crash following a League Cup match against Bolton Wanderers. Gullit was suddenly sacked in February 1998, ostensibly after a contract dispute, with the team 2nd in the Premiership, and in the semi-finals of two cup competitions. Another player-manager was appointed — the 33-year-old Vialli.

Vialli began his management career in style by winning two trophies in two months. The League Cup was secured with another 2–0 win over Middlesbrough at Wembley (with Di Matteo again on the scoresheet). Chelsea reached the Cup Winners’ Cup final following a dramatic semifinal win against Vicenza. Having lost the away leg 1–0 and then conceded an away goal, Chelsea bounced back to win 3–1 on the night and go through, with Hughes again the catalyst. They won their second Cup Winners’ Cup title with a 1–0 victory against VfB Stuttgart at the Råsunda Stadium in Stockholm, with Zola scoring with his first touch having been on the pitch for just 17 seconds. Following that, Vialli led the club to a 1–0 win over European champions Real Madrid in the Super Cup at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

The Blues arrived in Malaysia on Monday but the RC Genk goalkeeper is in England going through formalities. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas told his club’s official website: “At this moment he is having a medical but has not yet agreed personal terms.” Courtois said he would develop quicker as a player if he played in Spain instead of remaining with Genk in the Belgian league. “That is better for me. I could have taken the easier option and stayed another year at Genk but I could not pass up this chance. Atletico is another world and I will have to really fight for my place but that is how it is at the top. I can learn more in Spain than in Belgium,” the goalkeeper said. “I would rather that things had turned out differently. And I will not forget where I would have been without Genk. It was more than just money involved, the footballing side of things also counted for a lot, making the step up.” The youngster admitted he was blown away when he met some of the club’s big names at Stamford Bridge.

He added: “I had to pinch myself when the goalkeeping coach gave me a tour of [Chelsea’s] training complex. I also met Villas-Boas, who knew me from a previous European match when Porto played Genk. “I was presented to the players in the dressing room. [Frank] Lampard and [John] Terry immediately struck up conversation with me. And [Didier] Drogba told me that he saw on TV how he saw me jumping over a fence during the Genk title celebrations. I also spoke to Petr Cech, two keepers together.”

By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my SHE was already in the spotlight in 2007 after being crowned Miss World Malaysia. In fact, Deborah Henry was placed in the top 16 on the world stage the same year. Now, all eyes are on Deborah, the second Malaysian to hold the Miss World Malaysia and Miss Universe Malaysia titles. The first was Trincy Low Ee Bing (Miss Malaysia World 1995 and Miss Malaysia Universe 1997), who also went on to bag Mrs World Malaysia 2009. Already touted as one of the strong Asian contenders at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil in September, Deborah certainly has what it takes to make the country proud. Born Deborah Priya Henry of Indian-Irish descent, she stands tall at 5ft 10in (178cm). She was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 in January. Preparations are underway to ensure that Deborah gets all that extra boost to make her an even stronger contender. Recently, a short Press conference was held at Sunway Lagoon where Deborah, for the first time, revealed the national coscos tume that she will be wearing at Sao Paolo. Themed as the 'Wau Factor', the costume was inspired by the unique wau bulan,, a traditional kite that has its roots in the east coast, particularly in Kelantan. The designer behind the costume is Amir Luqman Othman, who treated it as an artistic project that offers a combination of intricate designs, colours and workwork manship. "Deborah herself is the 'wow factor'. She was born to fly," Amir said. "We had discusdiscussions with her fans and we decided to use the wau bulan as the theme for the national dress.”

The national dress, which took nearly two months to complete, has quite a huge price tag too. It cost RM380,000! Well, if you want to go with style, might as well go all the way, right? While songket is used extensively in the design, the other “expensive” element and detail that enhance the entire design are precious gemstones such as the rare pigeon-blood rubies, emeralds and topaz. “The wau has come to be an artistic object which is judged solely for its beauty, its intricate designs, combination of colours, and the neatness of the workmanship. All the major elements of this graceful art form is as functional as it is beautiful,” Amir said. Among the wau's functional attributes that have been incorporated into the dress include the 'head', that is represented by the oval-shaped headgear; the 'hummer', through a dangling multi-tiered gold encrusted headpiece; and the 'eye', that can be seen through the flower-embroidered bustier made from the Royal Terengganu SongSong ket sponsored by Yayasan Tuanku Nur Zahirah. The 'wing' is reprerepre sented by Deborah's hand when she holds the tail piece. The use of songket is also apt as the luxurious fabric that really represents Malaysia and has been traditionally hand-woven in silk or cot-

ton yarns by rural Malay women here for more than two centuries. “Songket-weaving is a labourious and tedious process that requires a high degree of concentration from the weaver, resulting in a work of art that reflects the weaver’s artistic skills. This accurately represents the intricacy, effort and beauty of our Miss Universe Malaysia 2011, Deborah Henry,” said Amir. The whole piece in the end, forms an understated and elegant wau bulan that goes from head to toe. The precious stones used in the traditional-inspired dress are sponsored by Mogok

Jewels, Maizura Mahathir and Zin Oo Ko, the official jewellers for the national costume. While waiting for Deborah to, err, wow the world in September, the evolution of the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) continues. MUMO National Director Andrea Fonseka said September will also see the debut of BeautyCamp: The Search for Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 on a local television channel. “This is the first time for any country in Asia to use a reality television show as part of the selection process for a Miss Universe candidate. We will also be broadcasting the Gala Night and revelation of the Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 candidate on Nov 10,” Fonseka said, adding that BeautyCamp represents a new format of programming for Malaysian television. “We wanted Malaysians to identify with and support their Miss Universe Malaysia candidate. The most effective way to accomplish this was to bring the potential winners into their homes every week for them to know and vote for their favourites,” said Fonseka.

The show will run from September till November. The series will culminate in a twoand-a-half hour live broadcast of the Gala Night where the winning Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 candidate will be crowned. “We selected the final list of under-30 girls from over 1,000 candidates who signed up at our road shows. After a fierce audition process, the final candidates were selected for their intelligence, beauty, spirit and that special fire that we spotted in their auditions. “We hope Malaysians see these special girls for what they are — ambassadors of the country, the people and the brands that make up our wonderful nation,” Fonseka said. ● For more information on MUMO, visit www. missuniversemalaysia. com.my. By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my FROM the streets to the runway. Nope, we are not talking about America's Next Top Model here. Introducing Jaspal Fashionista Search 2011, an event that could just be the beginning of some fresh faces' modelling career. Some may see it as a clever marketing blitz by Jaspal Malaysia, but the hopefuls who were part of the search saw the event as a good platform for them to begin their career in the fashion world. The event that took place at the grand ballroom of Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur saw 20 participants strutting their stuff, witnessed by celebrities and the who's who of the fashion and entertainment circle.

The list of the more than 500 guests who turned up was impressive. Among them were such personalities as super model Amber Chia, founder of A Cut Above Winnie Loo, and popular radio DJ Jack Lim. The celebrities and big names were hosted and accompanied by Jaspal Malaysia Marketing and Retail Sales Manager Annie Wang, who was also one of the judges for the event that was looking for the top male and female fashionistas. The winners were participants who were voted as the 'most striking' in Jaspal's latest collection. The best part was, all the par-

the participants were all vying for the grand title of Fashionista and its sub-categories of Stylista and Professionalista. The prizes were attractive too — a total of RM11,000 in cash and Jaspal cash vouchers, as well as prizes worth a

Liang in the male category. Each of the them walked away with RM2,000 cash and RM500 worth of Jaspal cash voucher. They are also now eligible to try out as models for Jaspal to be featured in fashion spreads in Malaysia. De Korte and Chin also each received a Samsung RA19PT refrigerator, a full modelling course from Amber Chia Academy, product hampers from Shu Uemura and a 12-month passport to Celebrity Fitness. As for the sub-awards, the Stylista category went to Sheena Liam Yue Sheen and Peter Onah Chukwudi, while Siti Hajar Shafie and Mohd Anuar Ibrahim walked away with the Professionalista awards. Winners of the Stylista and

Fiercely loyal fashionistas ticipants were chosen among Jaspal's loyal customers (who had spent up to a certain amount in a single receipt). The event gave these ordinary people the chance to try out their luck to be the

face and model for Jaspal's latest Spring/Winter 2011 collection. "They were not just customers. We are not just a boutique, but we also set a platform where our custom-

ers got to show what they had. They were only wearing Jaspal on the street and now they had been given the opportunity to put on Jaspal's best

designs and work them on the runway. "We are immensely proud to present the winners of our first-ever Jaspal Fashionista Search 2011. It has been encouraging to see the huge response from loyal Jaspal fans and to see their joy when they did the catwalk, while gaining exposure to the glamorous world of fashion," Jaspal Deputy Managing Director Viseth Singsachathet said. total RM21,500 from sponsors Samsung Electronics, Amber Chia Academy, Shu Uemura and Celebrity Fitness. Apart from the voting system, the winner of the Jaspal Fashionista Search 2011 was chosen based on certain criteria. "Winners were selected based on physical attributes, including their height and runaway presentation as well as their personalities, personal grooming and their confidence in front of the camera," Viseth said. After all the consideration, the grand prize awards went to Wafa Johanna De Korte in the female category, and Chin Kee

Professionalista category were awarded RM1,000 cash each, plus RM500 Jaspal cash voucher, product hampers from Shu Uemura and sixmonth passport to celebrity Fitness. One of the judges who was responsible in determining and choosing the winners was Jaspal loyal customer, actor Zizan Nin who seemed very impressed with the "new talents". "It was a good and enjoyable event tonight. The fact that the contestants were actually real customers who appreciate and love the brand makes the whole event even more exciting. Now they might just be the next face and model of Jaspal!" Zizan said. He said it would be great if Jaspal could consider making the Jaspal Fashionista Search as an annual event. Zizan, who has also been Jaspal's loyal customer, said he is satisfied with the brand too. "It has been difficult for me to find well-fitting jackets or coats. Jaspal has my perfect fit. So far I am happy with the design and cut."

BP goes down when you go up HAVE you ever felt a bit dizzy after standing up from a lying position? We get this strange feeling every now and again but have you ever wondered why? A reader wrote to me after reading my article last week asking why his mother’s blood pressure, which was normal to start with, would drop everytime she stood up. I deliberately missed out on this condition called postural hypotension due to space constraint as it is quite a common complaint and is a big subject in itself. Postural hypotension happens when the blood pressure drops after standing up from a sitting or lying

By DR HAIZAL HARON KAMAR lifestyle@mmail.com.my position. It is actually quite common and can happen to anyone. It is more common in the elderly and is often mild, lasting for only a few seconds. However, longlasting postural hypotension can be a cause for concern

SUDOKU

as it may point to some underlying medical problems. In a normal situation, blood pressure does not change much when you stand. This is because of the complex reflex mechanism from the baroreceptors situated next to your heart and neck arteries that sense the drop in blood pressure from the pooling of blood in your legs on standing and then trigger your heart to beat faster and pump more blood. In addition, blood vessels will narrow, which increases resistance to blood flow and, consequently, your blood pressure too. In certain conditions, the body’s counter-regulating mechanism gets interrupted resulting in postural hypotension. The causes include: t Excess fluid or blood loss. Dehydration from vomiting and diarrhoea or extreme exercise can cause drop in blood pressure on standing. t Diabetes. Nerves that help send signals regulating blood pressure are sometimes affected in longstanding diabetes. In addition, frequent urination in uncontrolled diabetes can cause dehydra-

tion resulting in postural hypotension. t Heart problems. Certain heart conditions can lead to low blood pressure on standing. They include heart failure, slow heart rate (bradycardia) and heart valve problems. t Nervous system disorders. Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease can affect your body’s blood pressure control system. t Adrenal gland disease. Postural hypotension is a common presentation of this rare condition called Addison’s disease which is the inability of the adrenal glands to produce enough hormones thereby disrupting body’s control of water and salt. t Medications. Some medicines can cause blood pressure to drop on standing. They include blood pressure pills and diuretics. A detailed history of your mother’s complaint by the doctor is important and investigations such as blood and urine tests, ECG, various scans and tilt-table test will be ordered accordingly. Is it dangerous? It is thought that the sudden

swings in blood pressure can damage the brain in the long term giving rise to dementia and other brain disorders although there is no good evidence for this. Postural hypotension itself rarely causes any serious complications. However, if the drop in blood pressure is marked and rapid, the dizziness can be so severe that you may even faint. If you fall on your sofa or bed, it would not be so bad at all but if you happen to be walking down the stairs immediately after coming off your chair, it might not be such a pretty sight. The treatment for postural hypotension is aimed at addressing the underlying cause. If medication is the culprit, then by removing the offending drug, the symptoms of postural hypotension should disappear. If dehydration is the cause, then replacing loss body fluids will return blood pressure control back to normal. It is possible that despite extensive investigations, the cause of postural hypotension is not found. However, there are several ways to overcome the problem or at least lessen the severity. These include: t Move slowly between positions. Take your time

to stand up and do not rush to walk after standing. t Avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of plain water and keep your body well hydrated. Avoid alcohol or carbonated drinks. t Wear compression stockings. This can reduce excessive pooling of blood when you stand. t Exercise calf muscles. Exercising your calf muscles before standing up can encourage blood flow to the heart and prevent postural hypotension. t More salt in diet. Do check with the doctor before taking in more salt, especially if you also have hypertension. t Medications. Drugs such as fludrocortisones can be used to increase the amount of fluids in the circulation. If you have any questions or comments, do write to me at haizal@tropicanamedicalcentre.com. See you again next Wednesday. Dr Haizal Haron Kamar Consultant Cardiologist Tropicana Medical Centre

QUESTION

What is the cause of chest pain? HOW TO PLAY

YESTERDAY'S SOLUTION

Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

Dear Dr Haizal I HAVE been troubled by pain in my chest for the past few months. It has been about once or twice a week but of late, I have been getting it almost every day. I tend to burp a lot and I find some relief each time I do so. I have been dismissing it by saying it is just angin and nothing more serious than that and have been getting remedies from the nearby pharmacy. Now I am in my forties and I admit that my lifestyle is not exemplary. I smoke and drink and I find any excuse not to exercise. I am 15kg overweight. Yes, I am clearly at risk of getting a CHD. Is it still safe to

assume that the pain is not due to the heart or do you think I should get my heart checked too? Albert Dear Albert You need to see a doctor, and any doctor will do for a start. Self-medicating is fine to some extend but if your symptoms are no better and in fact are getting worse, then a visit to a doctor is most appropriate. What you have just described are typical symptoms of gastro-oesopheal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis. However, in view of the several risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) which in your case

are obesity, smoking and sedentary lifestyle (and I do not even know your blood cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar yet), you do run a significantly higher than average risk of getting CHD. Your doctor will need to take a detailed account of your history and then examine you. It is difficult to know what tests he will request for you. It will depend on what he or she feels is the likeliest underlying cause. If it is an acid-related problem, then the doctor will probably do a urea-breath test to detect a certain organism in your stomach called Helicobacter pylori that makes a person prone to getting ulcer. If your

symptoms are very severe, then gastroscopy may be necessary after a trial of medications. If CHD is what the doctor suspects, then you may need to go on a treadmill for an exercise stress test. This is the very least that you should have. An ECG alone may not tell the doctor much. If you need further cardiac tests then your doctor will likely refer you to a cardiologist. Sometime during your consultation with your doctor, you will definitely hear these words: “Stop smoking”, “lose weight”, “limit your alcohol intake” and “exercise regularly”. Last but not least, CHD is easily confused with GERD. If in doubt, see a doctor.

No pain, no gain KUALA LUMPUR: KARATE

Injuries won't stop Jayaseelan

CALL it occupational hazard. National karate exponent V. Jayaseelan is aware and readily accepts it. His chances of competing in the Jakarta Sea Games this year was dealt a cruel blow. He had suffered a slight knee injury during training but took the risk competing in a Sea Games qualifier and was shown the exit. It was the second time injuries put paid his hopes of competing in the Sea Games. It was the quarterfinal of the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) championship which forms the basis for selection. In 2009 he injured his shoulder while competing in German Open and had to skip the Laos Games. He is not discouraged with the whole episode. He is taking it all in his strides and accepts that injuries

JAYASEELAN

KAMpusBuzz with Kamaruzaman Ahmad mmsport@mmail.com.my

are common in any sport and a small element of good luck is vital. "I was eager to win a place in the team and in the process failed to deliver my best. But It was a worthy cause, I guess. "It was the second time that I missed going to the Sea Games. In 2009, I had qualified but suffered a shoulder injury and did not compete in the Laos Sea Games. "I was only in the team to the 2007 Korat Sea Games that won silver. This latest setback has not distracted my focus to

win honours in the immediate future," said Jaya, a Mass communication student in UPM. For the love of the sport, despite undergoing therapy Jaya competed in the individual and team event in the recent Masum Sports Carnival. He won the above 84kg category individual gold and steered his team to another gold. At 25, he is not yet ready to quit. He now await for the doctor's final reports whether surgery is required on his right knee.

SHAH ALAM: SWIMMING

Torn between two loves

SWIMMING or studies. That was the dilemma facing Raja Azlina Izzah Raja Shahrom (pic). She was one of the country's potential young swimmers having won gold medals in two successive Sukma in Kedah (2006), and Terengganu (2008). Azlina whose mother is of Chinese and Indian origin also competed in the Asean Schools' championship and Sea Age Group in 2006. In 2008, she again competed at the Asean Schools culminating in her senior Malaysian debut at the 2007 Korat Sea Games.

Destined to be another Nurul Huda Abdullah, a former Malaysian sensation, Azlina fizzled out in pursuit of her swimming interest earnestly. That was it. She decided to focus and priority to her studies but at the same time is still passionate about the sport. Azlina, 20 a first-year law student of Universiti Teknologi Mara, insisted her swimming interest has not waned. As proof she represented UiTM in the Malaysian University Sports Council (Masum) carnival recently. She specialises in 50m and 100m breaststroke with the former as her pet event.

Despite racing against national swimmers she won silver medals even without regular trainings and expert advice. "I still like swimming and want to represent the country. But studies come first. Hopefully, I would like to return to competitive swimming after I get my degree.

BUKIT JALIL: SEPAKTAKRAW

History in the making

WOMEN'S sepaktakraw player Siti Norzubaidah Che Abdul Wahab is raring to unleash her four years of experience in the sport at the World championship in Kuala Lumpur from July 21-24. She is aware the team's performances and results will go down into the history books. Why? It is an inaugural World championship of high stature and played on home turf as well. "I am honoured and very

lucky to be among the five players selected for the tournament. It is the ambition of every sportsman or sportsman to play at the highest level. After four years in the national team this is my finest moment," said Norzubaidah. "I aim to make it an unforgettable championship and want my teammates to rally strongly for a national cause." A sports science student in UiTM, Zubaidah is from Ladang Taku in Kuala Krai.

She is a versatile player and can play the role of "feeder" and "tekong". Her achievements included representing Kelantan and finishing runners-up in Malaysian Games in 2008 and 2009. Her latest exploits was in a championship in Wuhai, China last month. The national team finished runners-up and third in interregu and doubles respectively. Zubaidah, 22, said the team's target is a place in the last four.

Parenting gone wrong Let children develop at their own pace

“MY daughter can do the split perfectly and she is only five. Your daughter is 10 and she still cannot do it,” says a parent. “And my d au g hte r is being taught by a Kwai Poh (European lady)," says another parent. That was a typical dialogue heard among parents at the Gym Fun Inter Club Gymnastics Artistic and Rhythmic Carnival held at SRJK(C) Yuk Chai in PJ over the weekend. Former g ymnasts Onn Kwang Tung and Foong Seow Ting did a credible job in getting some 250 children, some as young as four, to take part in the two day event. Even national coach Natalia Sinkova, who played judge for the day, was pleasantly surprised with the number of participants. “But what happens to them? Why don’t we see more gymnasts, especially artistic gymnasts at the senior levels?” Natalia questioned. When asked of the enthusiastic parents, Natalia smiled.

FromTheSidelines with Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my

“It’s good to see their support. But I had one parent coming up to me to ask for my opinion which of our former gymnasts would make a good coach. When I asked her how long her child had been in gymnastics, she answered two weeks!” According to former gymnast and 2006 Asian Games silver medalist Ng Shu Wai, such overzealous parents are a contributing factor to why the nation has failed to produce good gymnasts for a long time. The national women’s artistic gymnastic squad only comprises five girls — Tracie Ang, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, Nur Eli Eliana, Noor Hasleen Fatihin Hasnan and Tan Ing Yueh. Ing Yueh, aged 15, is the

PETALING JAYA: SQUASH

Hoping for some 'Ong' ONG BENG HEE is raring to put on a memorable show in the on-going Malaysian Open at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil. B eng Hee had the luxury of sparring with national No 1 Azlan Iskandar and Frechman Gregory Gaultier over the past two weeks ahead of the annual tournament. “It was tough in the beginning. Azlan has been in good form and so has Gaultier. It was difficult to keep up with them but things have improved over the days,” said Beng Hee. “I’m on a better footing now. It’s been awhile since I played and I’m looking forward to a good showing.” Gaultier, ranked sixth in the world and the top seed at the tournament, is looking

to dethrone defending champion Azlan in this year’s edition. “We have many tournaments (around the world) but this (event) is good for my preparation. It’s good to play here and prepare for my next tournament in Australia.” Gaultier is expected to face Beng Hee in the quarterfinal match on Thursday (8pm). The event remains as a PSA International 50 and offers a prize money of US$50,000 (RM150,324). The women’s event, meanwhile, has been elevated to a World Series tournament and boasts a prize money of US$68,500 (RM 205,879). World No 1 Nicol David leads the cast and is set to defend her title. Among the other players keen on creating an upset include Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy, French lass Camille Serme, Australian Kasey Brown and Jenny Duncalf of England. BUENOS AIRES: FOOTBALL/ COPA AMERICA

Custodian evolves from thrashed teen to stardom FOR most people, football is a game of two halves but where Venezuelan goalkeeper Renny Vega (pic) is concerned, his Copa America experience is a tall-buttrue tale spanning three decades. Ve g a , w h o pl ay s for Caracas FC, is 32-yearsold and until this month was a perfect example of the "sporting journeyman" cliche. If he was known outside his homeland it was only to the handful of fans at Italian side Udinese, who may remember him from a non-playing spell there as a teenager while later stints at Bursaspor and Denizlispor in Turkey were barely more eventful. Wh i l e Ve g a pl aye d a blinder in the goalless opening draw with Brazil, with the Vinotinto going from strength to strength since then, his Copa America debut is one he would prefer to forget — though it is illustrative of just how far the baseball-loving nation has come in the global game. Banker charged over F1 rights sale

PROSECUTORS in Munich have charged a former senior executive at a German bank for allegedly taking bribes from Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone in connection with the sale of the bank's stake in Formula 1. Gerhard Gribkowsky, the former head of risk management at Bavarian bank BayernLB, is being charged with corruption, abuse of confidence and tax evasion, after overseeing the sale of BayernLB's commercial rights stake to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners in early 2006. A court must now decide whether Gribkowsky, who was arrested in January, will stand trial on the charges. Prosecutors claim that two Austrian companies set up by Gribkowsky received US$44 million (RM132.2m) in pay-

ments from Ecclestone and his holding company Bambino Trust. The companies, which used bogus consulting contracts, had addresses in Mauritius and the British Virgin Islands and did not pay German taxes. Prosecutors claim that Gr ibkowsky l ater us e d BayernLB's funds to pay the Formula 1 chief a commission of US$41.4 million and added a further agreement for US$25 million to Bambino Trust. Ecclestone was questioned by state prosecutors last April as part of the probe into irregular payments made during the sale and is still under investigation, prosecutors spokeswoman Barbara Stockinger said. the Brazilians. The man from Maracay was between the sticks and had a box-seat view as the likes of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo bore down on his goal — regularly and to great effect. Brazil won 7-0. This time however, Vega saved ever ything that Neymar, Robinho, Pato and company could throw at him — to the surprise of everyone except the man himself and his teammates. "We are not surprised. We came here humbly to get on with the job and that's what we're doing," says Vega. After Chile were dispatched in a historic quarterfinal triumph, Vega told Argentinian daily Clarin the Venezuelans had been fired up by what they took as the arrogance of the Chilean media. "They said the Venezuelans only know how to make soap operas. Well the game against their lot was the best soap opera!" But the previous episode had been a bit of a cliffhanger as well, thanks to Vega's stunning intervention at the "wrong" end of the field. Having beaten Ecuador in their second group game, they were already guaranteed a place in the quarters

as they went up against a Paraguay side who were not assured of further progress. The experienced Paraguayans, regular World Cup participants, were 3-1 up as the clock ticked down before substitute Nicolas Fedor reduced the deficit in the 90th minute. Then, with 93 minutes on the clock and the whistle almost in referee Enrique Osses' mouth, up popped Vega to nod down a corner for Grenddy Perozo to throw himself forward and head home, preserving their unbeaten record. "The bench told me to go up and head it and it was a good call," Vega grinned. In fact he is no stranger to rival penalty areas. Six years ago, stricken with a shoulder injury, he came on from the bench to play up front for Aragua FC and also showed similar attacking instincts on one occasion with Deportivo Italchacao. Now the Paraguayans stand between the Vinotinto and a place in the final. Can they do it? "Why not? That's what we are fighting for," said Vega. "We are improving all the time. We stopped being Cinderella a long time ago." — AFP

Catalans to flex transfer muscle at last

BARCELONA confirmed they are still hopeful of concluding deals to sign Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas. Both deals have been on-going for weeks, as the Catalans try to hammer out terms with Udinese and Arsenal respectively. Ma n a g e r Jo s e p " Pe p " Guardiola and spor ting director Andoni Zubizarreta reiterated their positions over both deals. Guardiola said Barca have enough money to sign both Sanchez and Fabregas. Although they admitted signing a striker was a priority, suggesting they would like to do a deal for Sanchez first, they also confirmed Arsenal are talking terms over Fabregas. "This year Arsenal have agreed to negotiate and we are working on it," said Guardiola. "Barca have made an offer

to Arsenal and we have time until Aug 31 (this transfer window closes) and we'll try to reach an agreement. It is easier for Fabregas in this way because he fits the template, but I know these things cannot always be done. "We will try until the end to bring him. I hope that eventually everything can be arranged. But sometimes things cannot be done. "We will fight to the end to try to get Fabregas because we believe he will improve the team and the squad." Guardiola rubbished suggestions that Fabregas may be pretending to be injured in order not to play for Arsenal during pre-season. "Fabregas has to do what Arsenal ask of him, I do not like this insinuation that he has told them he will not play. When he is well then Arsene Wenger will play

him. "He has spoken with his manager and his club and if there is the possibility of leaving he would like to come to Barca. If we do not buy him this year then that is business." Zubizarreta insisted Barca were treating Arsenal with "respect" when it came to the issue of Fabregas. "We always try to approach from positions of utmost respect. We have a style to do things," he said. On Chilean star Sanchez, both Guardiola and Zubizarreta outlined their desire to finalise the deal. "Sanchez has a lot of potential and I'm told he's a very good boy and that is close to the profile you want," said Zubizarreta. "Negotiations are in a final process. We expect a happy ending and that Sanchez is here with us soon."

Wilson given two years By HARESHDEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

INFAMOUS S i n g a p o r e a n b o o k i e Wilson Raj Perumal (pic) was convicted of bribery, forgery and illegal border crossing and sentenced to two years' imprisonment by Finnish courts. It remains unclear if Wilson had appealed the sentence. According to the Lapland District Court, Wilson netted about €150,000 (RM640,000) for fixing results in the Finnish football league since 2008. Wilson targeted a local team in the northern Finnish town of Rovaniemi. He has been in custody since February. The verdict also saw seven Zambian and two Georgian players of the team handed suspended sentences ranging from six months to 20 months for accepting bribes of €11,000 to €40,000 each to fix matches. Wilson was arrested in February after entering Finland with a fake Ghanaian passport. This was revealed during a Stadium Security and Event Management talk organised by Fifa in Kuwait in April. Wilson’s mentor, Singaporean Rajendran Kurusamy, was charged in Malaysia last month for bribing six players from T-Team in the President’s Cup (Under-21) tournament. Fifa head of security Chris Eaton had disclosed Rajendran as the person instrumental in coaching Wilson and several other individuals to fix matches in and around the region. Wilson is also said to be linked to the MalaysiaZimbabwe fiasco in 2009 which saw Zimbabwean club Monomotapa United masquerading as the Zimbabwe national team in the Warriors kit while playing two matches against the Malaysian Tigers at the Cheras Stadium. This was first exposed by Mailsport in its article "Con Deal?" published on July 13, 2009. Malaysia won both matches 4-0 and 1-0 respectively. Upon investigation, it was found that Zimbabwe FA had fired its chief executive officer Henrietta Rushwaya, who was believed to have had a hand in dealing with Wilson. The FA of Malaysia (FAM), till today, maintains they played with the Zimbabwe national team as stated in a letter signed off by Rushwaya.

THE SCORER of a backheeled penalty, who has become an Internet sensation as a result, is facing possible disciplinary action from the United Arab Emirates Football Association. Theyab Awana stole the headlines in the UAE's 7-2 friendly defeat of Lebanon on Sunday for his 78th-minute penalty, which he slotted home with his heel after running backwards towards the spot. He was shown a yellow card at the time — although his offence was unclear — and now the UAE's team manager has hinted at a sanction. Blackburn postpone India trip BLACKBURN ROVERS have postponed their preseason visit to India following last week's bomb blasts in Mumbai, the Indian-owned English Premier League club said this morning. Three near-simultaneous bomb blasts during the evening rush hour last Wednesday killed 18 people and injured 133 others in India's financial capital. Blackburn, who are owned

by the Indian Venky's company, said in a statement: "The board and the owners have agreed to reschedule until such time as further risk assessments and appraisals have been undertaken." The trip, which would make Blackburn the first English Premier League side to tour India, is now expected to take place at a later date, the club added on their website (www.rovers.co.uk).

"Safety is always our top priority and after detailed discussions with our security and legal advisors we have been left with no option other than to postpone," the statement said. Tevez's transfer is improbable

CARLOS TEVEZ'S (pic) lawyer Adrian Ruocco has admitted that the Manchester City striker's transfer to Corinthians is far from certain. The two clubs have been locked in talks in the last few days as Corinthians is desperate to wrap up a deal before tomorrow, when the Brazilian transfer window closes. Corinthians was ready to offer €40 million (RM169.9m) for the Argentine spread over the next four years. But City's request to have the first installment of €10 million paid up front appears to be a deal breaker. The Brazilian club will only receive revenue from a new television deal in January and have already told City they cannot meet the English club's request, which may prevent the move from happening. "Regrettably, judging from the pace of negotiations right now, it is improbable that we will come to any agreement with Corinthians," Ruocco told Brazilian sports website Lancenet. "The only thing that stands in the way of a deal is this matter about the first installment. But we will wait until Wednesday, that is the only thing we can do." Tevez has declared he does not want to continue at Manchester City as he wishes to be closer to his two daughters, who are living in Buenos Aires. — Agencies

Vidal will leave with club’s blessings CHILE international midfielder Arturo Vidal insists he would only leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer with the blessing of the Bundesliga club. Chelsea are the latest side to be linked with a move for the star, with manager Andre VillasBoas admitting he has other targets in mind in case their move for Tottenham’s Luka Modric fails. Arsenal were reported to be considering a bid for Vidal, while Serie A clubs Juventus and Napoli have also been credited with an interest. Leverkusen insist they will not sell to Bundesliga rivals, with Bayern Munich known to be keen, and will not lower their valuation should any team from outside Germany make an official approach. The former Colo-Colo player insists he is more than happy at the BayArena and would only depart if a deal can be reached which suits all parties. “I do not have any problem playing on for Bayer Leverkusen. I am able to see out my current contract and play Champions League football with Bayer in the new season,” Vidal told Kicker. “However, should any move take place I would only do it if every party involved would be able to leave the negotiating table with a smile on their face. I am very thankful Bayer Leverkusen handed me the chance to make a career in Europe, this is why I am longing for a perfect solution.” Vidal is already one of the stars of Chilean football. His versatility is his greatest asset. Whether playing for his club or Chile, he is both a solid defender and a capable attacker. Skilled at switching between attack and defence at a moment’s notice, providing his team with something extra on both attack and defence.

Malouda aims to make impact with Chelsea once new season starts

ATTACKER Florent Malouda is enjoying being on the pre-season tour with Chelsea but knows the Blues have to be focused to reach optimum physical condition, so they will be well-prepared for their challenge in the new Premier League season which kicks off on Aug 13. Chelsea are now in Kuala Lumpur where they will play against a Malaysian Selection at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow. And Malouda admits while the team enjoy meeting their fans from around the world, their main aim is to work on their fitness. “We are aware that the fans are supporting us all season so it is good to get that little bit of contact with them. For us it is important to win the games and then after that, what is around us is a pleasure,” he said on the club’s official website. “In pre-season though, individually and as a group, everybody has to be focused on our training and we have to get back to full fitness because we have to start well. “We know we start in the Premier League with an away game (against Stoke on Aug 14) and we know we have to be in condition to win that game and to try to be on top of the league from the beginning.” Chelsea follow the lead of Arsenal and Liverpool who have already been to Malaysia last week and Malouda expects a big turnout from

their supporters when they face the Malaysians. “There is always a big, big crowd and we play in big stadiums against teams that are really motivated so for us I think it is better when we go on tour like this,” he said. “It is good because the people want to take pictures and you sign autographs. Of course, you can’t please everybody but it is always good to have that contact. “You play in front of thousands of people and you get the opportunity to meet the people who are supporting you. On the website or on Twitter they are sending messages and so it is good to go to this part of the world. “That is part of our preseason habit and so it was good that we can train (in Asia) for two weeks. Now that we have a lot of games to play, I think for us it is better to go on tour,” said Malouda, who finished as Chelsea’s top scorer in the league with 13 goals. The 31-year-old Malouda will obviously set out to make an impact in the new season but he must impress new manager Andre Villas-Boas to get that chance of being a regular in the team. Malouda does have this healthy fight for places on his hands.
