Brother reveals disfigured sibling’s effeminate side, rues its tragic results

HIS family knew he was leading a secret life as a transvestite. Little did they expect Mohd Rafie Abdul Latif ’s (pic) close relationship with another man to lead to his features being tragically disfigured in a savage acid attack. The 28-year-old sustained horrific chemical burns to the face and body after being splashed with acid on Aug 8. His friend, who accompanied him moments before the incident, emerged as the chief suspect and has been detained.

By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my Yesterday, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters the act was believed to have been motivated by “jealousy over a lover”. The family, however, has not ruled out it is Mohd Rafie’s “soft” characteristics which could have resulted in him becoming a victim. His elder brother, Mejar Mohd Jeffry Abd Latif, revealed the family knew

about his effeminate tendencies. “We knew he was a transvestite. He has been that way for the last two years,” he said. Mohd Jeffry had initially declined to talk about his brother’s sexuality but only agreed after police disclosed the possible jealousy motive. “He had always been different even from young. “He liked to put on makeup and had lots of girlfriends. He was very close to them.”

Deadly thunderbolt!

Three States may face water shortage CONSUMERS in some areas in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will face a water supply crisis if the PahangSelangor Raw Water Transfer Project and the construction of the Air Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant are still not ready by 2014, said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) chief operations Officer Datuk Lee Miang Koi. He said currently, they were having a water supply deficit of 4.2 per cent or 186 million litres a day and that this was expected to further worsen by 14 per cent or 668 million litres a day by 2014. He said Syabas is facing difficulties in increasing water levels at reserve reservoirs in water-stressed areas and it takes 24 hours to bring things back to normal if there is a water supply disruption. He said three schemes which were approved by the government for additional water supply totalling 320 million litres a day, which was expected to be completed at the end of the year, could only meet demand for two years, based on the expected increase in demand.

Six Indonesians killed by lightning, five others injured

WITHIN a span of five minutes of heavy thunderstorm in the Klang Valley yesterday afternoon, six Indonesian workers were killed by lightning while another five, also Indonesians, were injured in two separate incidents. In the first tragedy at 2.40pm at the site of a high-end housing project at Persiaran Kerjaya in Jalan Rektor, Glenmarie, Shah Alam, three construction workers were struck dead by a lightning bolt, while three

of their compatriots suffered bodily injuries. Then at 2.45pm at Sungai Choh in Rawang, three vegetable farm workers died upon being struck by lighting while two of their compatriots survived with injuries. Shah Alam police chief, ACP Zahedi Ayob said the dead in the Glenmarie incident were identified as Mohd Nasir, 46,

Surady, 31, and Hazarin, 29, while the injured were Dasyir, 28, Rosi, 25, and Surady's wife, Som, 20. "During the thunderstorm, most construction workers went inside the workers' quarters nearby except for the six who were standing outside under a roofing," said Zahedi. The three injured were rushed to Hospital Tengku

Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for treatment, along with the remains of their dead colleagues. The Malay Mail learnt all six started working at the housing project three weeks ago. Police have classified the case as sudden death. When contacted, Glenmarie Properties group director for property, asset and construction, Siti Mariam Mohd Desa, said construction works on the project will be halted for the

time being. "We will move the workers' quarters to a safer place," she said. In the Sungai Choh incident, the five farm workers, aged 20 to 30, were in close proximity at the time. Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Affendi said: "The victims' employer said the five were busy working at the farm although it was raining heavily."

Dash for dear life Accountant outruns parang-wielding robber to safety

WHEN accountant Jeff Wong arrived home at Jalan USJ 1/27 in Subang Permai in 10pm last Saturday from an overseas trip, he became the sixth target of a parang-wielding robber who went on an hour-long rampage. And he may have ended up injured, or worse, if he did not run faster than the suspect. "After arriving by taxi, I was about to open my house gate when a man suddenly appeared from nowhere and pointed a parang at me," said Wong, 30, adding that his wife and children were out shopping at the time. "The robber, who was of dark complexion, spoke to me nicely but in a stern manner. Although I was shocked, my instincts told me to flee. I abandoned my luggage and while running as fast

By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

as I could, I shouted for help. This caused my neighbours' dogs to bark while the robber continued to pursue me." Wong said no neighbour came out of their houses but he then noticed a household having a barbeque in the courtyard where the house gate was wide open. "I had no choice but gatecrash the party which was mainly attended by teenagers and children. They were shocked by my intrusion. I yelled at them to lock their front gate and run into their house. The robber was undeterred and entered the house compound. Fortunately, by that time, the people in the house closed and pad locked

their front door." Wong said the robber, out of frustration, used the parang to break the windscreen of a car

parked outside the house. "The car belonged to the household whose occupants then rang police. But by the time

they arrived, the robber was gone," said Wong, adding police later said the same suspect had victimised five others before me, all within an hour, in Jalan USJ 1/33, Jalan USJ 1/4E and Jalan USJ 1/25. "I then returned to my house to find my laptop bag missing. Perhaps the robber took it. The bag also contained an iPad and some of my accounting firm's documents." Later that night, Wong went to the USJ 8 police station to file a report and got to meet some of the other victims of the same robber. "All of them were just as traumatised as me. I am happy my wife and children were not home at the time as the robber could have hurt them badly," he said.

Nine muggings, break-ins this year RESIDENTS in Subang Permai claim there were at least nine wayside robberies and house break-ins in their area so far this year. Roslawati Ibrahim (pic), 51, who resides in Jalan USJ 1/23, said she and fellow neighbours were nervous on learning about the recent incidents from one another. "There are several access roads into our area and we

believe this makes it easy for criminals to come and go as they please," she told The Malay Mail. "My neighbour was robbed after an intruder climbed into her house and took jewellery and laptops. Another neighbour, two doors away, lost her necklace and other jewellery when a burglar broke in through the kitchen window grill. In both cases, the break-

More suspects held in failed cybercafe robbery

POLICE arrested three more suspects in connection with the botched cybercafe robbery in Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh on Sunday morning. The suspects, in their 20s and 30s, were picked up in Sungai Buloh on Sunday night. S elangor p olice chief, DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah (pic) said one of the three latest suspects is an army serviceman. This means three of the five suspects connected to the robbery are from the Armed Forces. “We believed the gang robbed two cybercafes in Sungai Buloh and Kuala Selangor the previous day,” he said. In the 6.45am incident on

Sunday, police shot dead a robber and injured his accomplice after they tried to rob a cybercafe in Jalan Besar, Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh.

Both suspects, in their 20s and 30s, used the back entrance and the cybercafe staff thought they were regular customers and let them in. Once inside, the suspects flashed a Glock pistol and a sickle, and stormed the cashier. What they did not realise there was the presence of two police officers inside the outlet conducting a raid. When the police ordered the two robbers to surrender, a fracas ensued and one of the suspects fired several shots. Police returned fire, killing one suspect, an army staff sergeant, and injuring his accomplice, a Ranger. The injured suspect was taken to Hospital Sungai Buloh for treatment.

ins occured late at night and in the wee hours." Roslawati said after residents made several pleas to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), the latter raised a three-metre high fencing in the back alley of their houses. "That somewhat helped reduced break-ins but we still do not feel safe," she said. S. Subramaniam, 70, who has been staying in Jalan USJ 1/22

since 1995, said through sharing experiences with neighbours, they believe there were at least nine muggings and break-ins in their area this year. "Our homes are located near an industrial area where criminals take advantage of easy access in and out," he said. "We hope the authorities, including police, will take greater crime preventive measures in our area."

'My brother does not deserve this fate'

He said the family found it hard, especially when they learned he had started dressing up as a woman and began working as a perfume seller, but accepted him anyway. "I knew about his sexuality but never thought it could cause him to be taken advantage of. And here he is now, lying on a hospital bed." The family, however, do not know what relationship Mohd Rafie had with the suspect and what transpired between them. Said Mohd Jeffry: "This is hard for us to digest. As of Sunday, we thought he was a good friend and he was subsequently detained as a prime suspect. Now, police are saying the motive could be due to love and jealousy. "I thought my brother

was a victim of the serial acid-splasher. With the latest disclosure, I was obviously wrong and it was personal all along." He said whatever his brother's nature might be, he did not deserve to suffer this fate. "He is still my brother and I hope people will not judge him harshly. He does not deserve to be in this situation just because of his sexuality." Police now believed the suspect sneaked behind Mohd Rafie and splashed him with the chemical. It is believed he had then driven the victim to the hospital and concocted a story to the police. It was earlier feared Mohd Rafie had become the latest victim of the notorious acidsplasher-robber who had disfigured two other people in Sungai Besi on July 26 and last Tuesday in Cheras.

Aussies expect 50,000 job losses MORE than 50,000 jobs are expected to be lost as the Australian economy slows in the next nine months, the Herald Sun reports. The strong rise in unemployment will increase pressure on the Reserve Bank to cut interest rates to offer relief to householders and stimulate the non-mining sector of the economy. The Australian Industry Group says the loss of more than 1,000 full-time jobs and 400 contractor jobs at BlueScope Steel was 'chilling news' for Australians, 300,000 of them Victorians, employed directly in manufacturing.

New parties register for 2014 polls FIFTEEN new political parties registered for the 2014 general elections ahead of the deadline last night, Sucipto, a spokesman for the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, said. One party that had already registered with the ministry, the Indonesian Nation Sovereignty Party, withdrew its name yesterday without explanation, the Jakarta Globe reports. One of the six has denied the charges of theft, laid under the Criminal Code. Robi Tambunan, another member of the human resources department, told the Central Jakarta District Court that the scam centered on the overreporting of the amount of un-used beef. The excess meat was then sold on the black-market.

Sue for higher compensation Sg Penchala landowners can go to court if unhappy with money paid

THE eight landowners in Kampung Sungai Penchala who are unhappy with the RM2.9 million being paid by Kuala Lumpur City Hall for their lots can seek redress in court for higher compensation. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail (pic) said the Land Acquisition Act 1960 allows the government to acquire any land for any public purpose deemed beneficial to the public generally. "The eight landowners have not challenged our decision but if they are unhappy with the amount they can go to court to seek higher compensation," he said yesterday. "In fact, the landowners should be thankful as, besides the RM2.9 million being paid for their land, City Hall will spend another RM3 million for a specially dedicated road

so that residents can have easy access to the Damansara-Puchong Expressway." In May, City Hall gazetted the compulsory acquisition of reserve land involving 0.189

hectare out of 3.0 hectares of the eight lots, in order to build a new road after the original access road from Jalan Datuk Sulaiman 1 to Kampung Sungai Penchala was closed due to complaints by residents who were against its use by the developer of a housing project at Kampung Sungai Penchala. Earlier this month, the Kampung Sungai Penchala Residents Association called on City Hall to reopen the original access road as it is a public road. Ahmad Fuad said the tender for the new access road will be called next month and the project will start in October with completion by February next year. "We want a win-win situation for everybody."

Price of rice will increase slightly next year ● From pg1 "On the monthly average, demand for imported rice is about 70,000 metric tonnes, so we have more than enough to last us until slightly after the year-end." The source said rice prices would, however, increase slightly next year. "The increase will be caused by the Thai rice price hike which will be followed by other countries raising the prices of their rice as well. "The price increase also depends on market forces but it is expected to go up by 10 to 15 per cent." The source said to counter any imported rice shortages, the government was already stocking up on the commodity.

The source, however, pointed out the concern now was not so much on the price hike but smugglers capitalising on the situation by buying the cheaper local rice and re-selling it abroad. "Certain parties would take advantage of the situation because our neighbouring countries had increased their rice price as opposed to us not doing so. "They would buy our rice in bulk and sell it for a much higher price in other countries." Yingluck had said the Thai government would buy unprocessed grains from farmers at 15,000 baht (RM1,498) a tonne at harvest time in November, above the current market rates of 9,900 baht.

Hawkers fail badly on hygiene at food bazaars IT is the last week of Ramadan and people walked around traders selling food in their cramped stalls at the food bazaar in Taman Melawati. Even though the number of hawkers has halved since the beginning of the holy month, those still operating braved the heavy downpour, earlier. However, the cleanliness of this environment remained questionable especially after the shocking death of an 11-year-old girl caused by food poisoning earlier this month. Nurdini Mohamad Ali died from severe dehydration due to diarrhoea and vomiting after breaking fast with otakotak and air batu campur bought at a Ramadan bazaar near her home in Meru, Klang. An inspection by The Malay Mail yesterday revealed many hawkers still failed to wear sanitary gloves when handling and preparing food for their customers. Even those wearing sanitary gloves would handle food and

other objects like a towel, to wipe away their sweat. Food trays were also not covered properly from the hovering flies. Some hawkers did not bother about the flies settling on the food until a customer placed an order. Open ice boxes were found

placed near the drain with sugarcanes on the road, soaking up muddy water. A hawker who only wanted to be known as Maizatul told The Paper That Cares, her stall has always prioritised cleanliness while her assistant tried to swat away the flies.

“We are very clean and my hands are not dirty,” she said, despite not wearing sanitary gloves when handling the food. “My customers do not complain about my using bare hands, so it is not a problem.” Another hawker named Na-

zimuddin also maintained his stall was very hygienic while wiping his hands on his apron before rolling a new batch of murtabak. “I have been operating this stall for almost 14 years and not once has anybody complained of food poisoning from what they bought from me,” he said. Anuar, who sells fried wanton and crab sticks, said he sells only hygienically-prepared food. "It is our responsibility to ensure our customers do not fall sick," he said, while frying the wanton and crab sticks beside a drain. Kuala Lumpur City Hall health director Dr Sallehudin Abu Bakar recently said 19 per cent of the food and drinks sold at 47 Ramadan bazaars in the city were contaminated. He said that 53 out of 278 food samples collected by them around the city tested positive for E-coli and other bacteria caused by poor personal hygiene.

The principal of Rumah Titian Kasih, Sharipah Adlan, who is fondly known as Mak Pah, said: “We are very thankful to Takaful Malaysia for the contributions we received as they are indeed meaningful to all of us. We are

very touched with the support rendered by an established company like them.” Takaful Malaysia board member Datuk Sulaiman Mohd Yusof said this Raya treat for the Rumah Titian Kasih inmates was in line with the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme called Takaful myJalinan Kasih which also contributed RM38,000 to the home. “We hope to share the joy and bring a smile to Rumah Titian Kasih during this season of Ramadan,” he said, adding that Takaful Malaysia will continue its efforts in serving the less-fortunate as these acts will enhance good relationships between the corporate sector and the community. Through such CSR activities, Takaful Malaysia also hopes to foster a stronger family spirit among all its employees, while inculcating a caring value in them.

Road mix-up solved There's only one Jalan Berjaya 5, council says

THE confusion over the same road name — Jalan Berjaya 5 — being shared by two housing estates 200m apart has been solved. It arose when residents of Jalan Berjaya 5 in Taman Gombak Tambahan found out there is a road by the same name in neighbouring Taman Berjaya. Letters, parcels and bills have been going to the wrong locations although no one actually knows how the mix-up started. Then, on Aug 12, after being told he had not settled his utilities bills, SYED HARUN SYED YACOB, a resident at Taman Gombak Tambahan, contacted Hotline to voice his grievances. SYED HARUN has not only not got his mail mixed up, he was also paid a visit by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) officers, intending to cut his electricity and water supply for alleged failure to settle his dues. He claims he has sent more than 10 letters of complaint about the address mix-up to the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), the last being in 2008, but nothing has been done. ● FOLLOWING the Hotline report, two officers from the council's urban planning department visited Jalan Berjaya 5 at Taman Gombak Tambahan and also the road bearing the same name in Taman Berjaya last Friday. There are about 20 houses located on the

TAKE NOTE 1. Anyone found having done illegal renovations to a building in Kuala Lumpur will be issued a notice asking to demolish the structure within 14 days. If the owner fails to comply, Kuala Lumpur City Hall will issue a final notice under the Road, Drainage and Building Act 1974. And if the owner still does not comply with the final notice, City Hall will take action to have the structure demolished. 2. Illegal business establishments in Ampang beware. The Ampang Municipal Council will issue compounds under the Trade, Business and Industry Licensing (MPAJ) 2007 by-laws for RM1,000 each for operating an unlicensed business. 3. Keeping rivers clean is among the priorities of the Klang Municipal Council. In conjunction with the Local Agenda 21 programme, the council is collaborating with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and the Selangor Water Management Corporation (PUAS) in ensuring the rivers in Klang are clean and free of pollution.

two streets. MPS public relations officer Mohammad Zin Masoad says based on the original layout plan submitted by the developer in the 1970s, Jalan Berjaya 5 in Taman Berjaya is actually named Jalan 1. "The road where SYED HARUN stays is correct and SYED HARUN may continue to use that postal address," he says. Mohammad Zin, who says this is the first case of an address mixup discovered in the Selayang municipality, advises the affected residents in Taman Berjaya to dis-

cuss the matter. Should they wish to change the road name to Jalan 1, they must send the council an official request. “The residents should appoint a representative, as it would be easier for the council to liaise with a representative, he says. "Once we have received the letter from the residents, we will bring this up at the council meeting.” After the request is approved, the council will inform the post office of the change of road name. Mohammad Zin says the resi-

dents should be patient as the process of changing the name will take time. Contacted by Hotline, SYED HARUN is happy with the outcome. "After this was explained by the officers who came last Friday, I am relieved. Hopefully, this matter will be settled soon.” Mahani Mohamed, who shares the same address as SYED HARUN, was not at home when the council's officers visited Taman Berjaya. Her neighbour, Herman Agus, 58, says he will discuss the matter with his landlord and neighbours. "I know the difficulty faced by SYED HARUN as the postman often sends someone else's letters to my house as well," he says.

Charge waived, so name can be removed from blacklist NOORDIN YOUNUS did not receive the credit card he applied for last year but that did not stop the bank from blacklisting his name for failure to pay a RM50 charge. NOORDIN says he applied for a Hong Leong Bank credit card at a shopping mall in January last year. When he did not receive any card, he assumed his application was rejected. However, he received a bank statement in April 2010, stating he owed RM50 in government service tax (GST). "I called the bank to inform them I never received the card. The officer agreed to 'terminate' the card," he says. So he was shocked to find his name has been blacklisted when he tried to apply for a new credit card two weeks ago. "I was told my application was declined as my name was blacklisted by Hong Leong Bank in the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS) for having outstanding credit card payment of RM50." ● HONG LEONG BANK BERHAD quality and customer experience general manager Josephine Leong says the bank contacted NOORDIN on Aug 18 and 19. "He has accepted our explanation and the matter is resolved." When contacted, NOORDIN confirms the bank has agreed to 'terminate' the credit card and waive the charges. “I have to wait for two weeks for my name to be cleared from the CCRIS."

PJ: Tony Fernandes takes over QPR (Aug 19)

An inspiring feat

WITH the 54th Merdeka anniversary just eight days away, what a great way to raise the Malaysian flag and spirit with the knowledge that a Malaysian now owns the majority of an English Premier League club. Permeating the Malaysia Boleh spirit back to our former colonial masters, it is a feat all Malaysians can be proud of. After buying into our national airline company, and now Queens Park Rangers (QPR), a Premier League football club, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has really helped Malaysians to realise the old saying “Dreams do come true”. The purchase of QPR creates an opportunity for Malaysians

to achieve their dream to play in the Barclays Premier League. It is something our country can really benefit from. Being

an avid football fan, I would love to see the footballing level of Malaysia reach the level of the English Premier League. Being a student in the UK,

whenever I mention I am from Malaysia, they say AirAsia. AirAsia has become almost synonymous with our country. The brand Fernandes and his team has created speaks volumes for itself. Through the QPR buy, Malaysia’s name will now be donned in the Premier League, further putting our nation’s name internationally as the BPL is broadcast worldwide and is one of the most followed football leagues in the world. The takeover of QPR is truly a tantalising move. Being a Malaysian, I can’t wait to see what this holds for Malaysia in the years to come. I am sure, given the track record of Fernandes and his

PJ: Chinatown: Change plan or we fight, landowners declare (Aug 12)

Conduct cultural impact assessment first

THE government should conduct some kind of a cultural impact assessment in Chinatown before deciding to acquire the buildings in the area. The reasons are simple: the area is not just a cultural melting pot but also part of the Malaysian heritage and a tourist attraction. Without Chinatown, KL might not turn out to be the KL we know today. Its history can be traced back all the way to the times when the Chinese Kapitan "ruled" over the Chinese communities in the area. It will be sad if the area is demolished just for the building of the MRT station. So much

history will be lost. From one perspective, the area can be further develop to highlight the 1Malaysia spirit. In one area, you have the Chinatown. Nearby, just a walking distance away, is the famous Jamek Mosque, then also a walking distance away, there is the Central Market and also Sri Mahamariamman Temple, one of KL's oldest and richest Hindu temples. The authorities, when planning to develop any area for development, should consider its historic and cultural values and its significance to us and also generations to come. Mokhtar

Find win-win solution WHY did Prasarana hold a public hearing with landowners when they have already decided to go ahead with the construction of the tunnels? I guess this is a way for them to have something on hand to go into the file to put the record straight, to make it look fair to the public and profitable to the board. From the report, it appears the landowners are being victimised and forced to accept the decision that they have to move out. Right now, it does not look good for the landowners, not unless some elite individual or group(s) come along to give help and assistance or to help them fight the case in court. The fact is, the existing rich

historical area is a crowd-puller. Each year, millions of visitors come to have a look, feel and shop in the area. Sadly, all this will be gone the moment a part of Jalan Sultan in Chinatown is torn down to make way for the proposed MRT route. Therefore, the Chinatown community must stand firm to stop the project from taking place. It is a shame if, in the future, tourists were to asked to see the old city of KL and our reply is, "Sorry, we don’t have any old city anymore." Before sending in the bulldozers, Prasarana should find a winwin situation to resolve the issue. Lau Bing

Malaysian heritage: If Chinatown is demolished, so much of history will be lost

Stop the destruction MUCH have been reported on the proposed MRT line in Jalan Sultan to a point where landowners are now saying they are willing to "fight to the end" and take the issue even higher. My question is how destructive can you get? I am shocked to read old and unique buildings which had been there for more than 100 years are to be demolished to make way

for the underground railway station in Chinatown. If they want to, train stations can be built over the Klang and Gombak rivers. It is high time the authorities stop this demolishing mentality from destroying heritage buildings in the city. Please stop the destruction before it is too late. Peter Chan

Fight to the end I FULLY support the Chinese community on this one. Chinatown is the cultural heritage and a part of Malaysian history. It is also one of the country's biggest tourist attractions. Any further development

would just 'kill' the area. The landowners and communities there should not budge or compromise. If they have to, fight it in court. Ghost Town

Hope for Malaysian football

colleagues, Malaysia is definitely going to be an indomitable world brand. What Fernandes has done has certainly inspired me. His corporate feats and achievements have made me a proud and more patriotic Malaysian with the spirit of Malaysia Boleh burning even stronger in me. Malaysia needs more entrepreneurs like Fernandes. We certainly have got it right with AirAsia and QPR. Let’s do more corporate feats to showcase our nation’s capability and capacity. I salute your vision and achievement,Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

AS a Malaysian, I am proud Tan Sri Tony Fernandes is now the owner of English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers. Hopefully, this will also bring new hope to Malaysian football. Fernandes should manage the club the way he successfully manages AirAsia and Tune Hotel. QPR have shown positive results by winning last weekend. If they continue to perform well, more Malaysians will fly to London to watch and support the club. Congratulations.

PJ: Acid attacks spread (Aug 19)

Educate the public WE are grateful to The Malay Mail for highlighting the cases of the nonsensical use of acid to attack innocent victims. These actions are despicable and the perpertrators should be punished to the full extent of the law, and if the law is insufficient, then amend it to punish these uncivilised culprits. Laws should also be enacted to regulate the sale of such corrosive liquids and all purchases must be registered. The owners of such acids must be liable for any misuse similar to the licensing of firearms. What the general public needs to know now are ways to

react if they were to encounter these culprits face-to-face. What should someone do to neutralise the impact of such attacks? Is using a lot of water to wash away the acid a good idea? Is there any antidote that one can carry in one's handbag or pocket to help neutralise the acids if splashed to our eyes and skin? Bear in mind that these crimes can happen to anyone as long as lunatics like these are on the loose. It is better to be prepared than sorry. Concern Reader

Big rewards may help THE writer is right when he said it seems acid-splashing has become a “trend” among criminals. What once started as mere random attacks has now evolved into something more sinister — robbery. Such was unheard of before because acid attacks are usually related to cases of jealous "exes" seeking revenge, or business rivals out for vengence. Who would have thought it has become another cowardly act used by robbers. Attacking their victims using acid appears to be an easy way for them to make money. Society is now in danger and living in fear. No matter how safe we strive to become, cases like these will likely make the public more alert of their sur-

roundings and be cautious of strangers. While being safe is good, what is the point when there is no sense of freedom? To help the police catch the culprits, the public will have to take part and report activities that are out of the ordinary. A doable suggestion is to post rewards to catch these criminals and have their photographs posted everywhere — on TV, newspapers and advertising boards. If the reward is lucrative enough, I believe even "friends" will come forward to provide some leads. Reward money will entice those who have helped or abetted these criminals to come forward. Tattered and torn, they need help

LAST week, we hosted a special guest, a young mother who had given birth to a healthy baby girl three days earlier, at our house. She was special because she needed temporary shelter and proper attention and care to swiftly recover before heading for her kampung to ask for forgiveness. She was also special because she was resolute that her baby deserved a better environment to grow and live – a sacrifice that only few can understand. She gave her baby, born out of wedlock, away to a very happy couple. We were doing the couple, a close family friend, a favour by temporarily hosting her after we were approached by the former for help. They were adopting the baby and everyone thought it would be good for everyone’s interest to have the young mother recovered elsewhere. We were their best option because they knew we had managed two similar cases before. Fortunately, our current Indonesian bibik is fairly experienced in post-natal treatment to complement our hospitality, and

on tuesday moral and emotional support. The young mother, Marsha (not her real name), is a typical Malay girl, raised in a Felda settlement in Negri Sembilan. Her paper qualification is only an SPM certificate and with nothing to look forward to at her kampung, the 20-year-old girl ventured out, chasing her dreams of becoming independent, earning a living and getting married to a decent man. She ended up in Malacca working at a hotel as a support staff. Being alone in a new place, she rented a room for herself and eventually, made new friends. To cut the story short, few months later, she had a boyfriend and after a month of knowing him, she claimed that she was constantly harassed by the latter for sex, laced with

empty promises and hopes, until she gave in, several times. Things were beginning to get rosy, or so she thought. She had also thought that the paths to her dreams were already nicely laid out when her series of nightmares started. She discovered that she was pregnant. And, with no one to turn to, her only hope was for her boyfriend to be responsible for their baby. But, of course, it didn’t happen that way. Instead, she was threatened that she would be harmed if she pointed her finger at him. Shattered and ashamed, Marsha decided to get out from the place after seven months of enduring “talks” behind her back and evil eyes from the self-professed caring society in her area. Forget her parents, she said

she couldn’t even stomach to face their wrath. She even believed that she would be outcast by her own family and discriminated and prejudiced by the others who knew of her condition. In fact, she was facing it already in her neighbourhood in Malacca. She didn’t have the moral support she direly needed as a helpless young and single mother-to-be from society. She needed a new place and that was when our friend "rescued" her. It was God-sent. That aside, her story is nothing different than the two earlier cases my wife and I had handled more than seven years ago. In fact, I am not wrong to say that many others out there share the same nightmares and tribulations. We, readers, have to understand and face this. They were very naive and gullible young girls and they were out of their parents’ control out there, studying or working. Only their conscience, and religious and moral values will guide them. And, they were irresponsible

men who would do the vanishing act, the easiest way to absolve themselves, when the girls get pregnant. Some are even worse as they force the girls to undergo an abortion or dump their babies. Statistics and media reports on abandoned babies and babies born out of wedlock are enough to paint a gory picture. The latest was a case in Kajang last week where a 17-year-old student gave birth to a baby girl in her school toilet. Can we totally blame the girls, like Marsha? No, we can’t. It would be grossly unfair and shallow to do so and I don’t think I have to explain why. At the very least, she, like many others, did not kill or abandon her baby. They sought help. Some got it, like Marsha, and some, unfortunately, did not get it. The problem will continue to persist, no matter how hard we, the society and authorities, try to tackle them. But, it doesn’t mean that we can simply wash our hands, and pass comments and judgments.

Society has a bigger role to play, by understanding the big picture and not to ostracise or discriminate unwed mothers. They made mistakes and they partly paid their penance through their emotional and mental suffering. They will carry the bad memories and guilt as long as they live. But, it is sad to know that many of us are taking the holierthan-thou attitude when facing with such situations like what happened to Marsha. So, the story of Marsha is a good reminder for us. It could happen to you. Marsha, who first arrived at our house emotionally distressed, pale and confused, left for her kampung a couple of days ago in good health and high spirits. It is hoped that she gets the forgiveness, peace and love she is desperately seeking, now. MUZLI MOHD ZIN wishes readers Selamat Hari Raya and Maaf Zahir Batin in advance. Three shot during UN visit in Syria SYRIAN forces shot dead three people in Homs during a visit by a UN humanitarian team yesterday, activists said, and the United Nations said the death toll from President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown on protests had reached 2,200. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces and loyalist gunmen known as "shabbiha" opened fire after hundreds of people took to the streets of Homs to greet the UN team, which has been granted access to assess humanitarian needs after five months of protests and repression. Video footage broadcast on Al Jazeera television showed a crowd of people thronging a car and chanting "The people want the overthrow of the regime" and holding signs saying "SOS" and "We will never give up until we get our freedom." — AFP

'Terrorist' bomb plan foiled UKRAINE'S State security service said yesterday it had foiled a bomb attack in the capital Kiev after detaining three people it said were involved in the plot. The SBU said the attack had been planned for Aug 24, the former Soviet republic's Independence Day. The announcement was likely to add to political tension, already high because of the trial of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko whose supporters plan to hold a demonstration in Kiev that day. The SBU said in a statement it had prevented a "terrorist act" after operatives found a home-made explosive device stuffed with nails when raided premises rented by the suspects. "The attackers planned to carry out the bombing in Kiev or its suburbs during the celebrations of Ukraine's Independence Day," it said. — Reuters

REMNANTS of forces still loyal to Muammar Gaddafi staged a desperate stand in Tripoli yesterday as rebels fought their way into the capital but the whereabouts of the veteran leader remains a mystery. Wo r l d l e a d e r s u r g e d Gaddafi, 69, to surrender to prevent more bloodshed and appealed for an orderly transition of power, as the sixmonth-old battle for control of the oil-producing North African nation appeared to enter its final stages. Rebels say they are now in control of most of Tripoli, a sprawling coastal city of two million people on the

Mediterranean Sea but it was not clear whether Gaddafi was still in the Libyan capital. Rebels swept into Tripoli two days ago in tandem with an uprising within the city. Firefights and clashes with heavy weapons were reported, including with anti-aircraft guns, as rebels tried to flush out snipers and pockets of resistance. Hundreds seem to have been killed or wounded since Saturday but Gaddafi tanks and sharpshooters appeared to hold only small areas, mainly around Gaddafi's heavily fortified Bab al-Aziziyah compound in central Tripoli. Civilians, who had mobbed

the streets on Sunday to cheer the end of dictatorship, stayed indoors as machinegun fire and explosions punctuated some of the heaviest fighting of the Arab Spring uprisings that have been reshaping the Middle East. President Barack Obama, saying the conflict was not over yet, cautioned rebels against exacting revenge for Gaddafi's brutal rule. "True justice will not come from reprisals and violence," he said. "Above all we will call for an inclusive transition that leads to a democratic Libya," Obama said. In an audio broadcast on

Sunday before State TV went off the air, Gaddafi said he would stay in Tripoli "until the end". There has been speculation, however, he might seek refuge in his home region around Sirte, or abroad. Rebels said they held three of Gaddafi's sons, including his heir apparent Seif al-Islam. Al-Jazeera TV said that one of them, Mohammed, had escaped, adding the body of another son, military commander Khamis, might have been found along with that of powerful intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi. The battle to take over Gaddaf i's comp ound in Tripoli will be fierce but any-

one inside has little chance of escape, a rebel spokesman told Al Jazeera television yesterday. "I don't imagine the Bab Al-Aziziyah compound will fall easily and I imagine there will be a fierce fight," Abdel Hafiz Goga, spokesman for the rebel National Transitional Council, said in an interview aired by the broadcaster. "The rebels are forming checkpoints at the entrances of Tripoli and I do not think he (Muammar Gaddafi's son Mohammad) would be able to escape Tripoli, and the same applies to Colonel (Muammar) Gaddafi," he said. — Reuters

Lies 'kill' Strauss-Kahn victim's case THE hurried sex, ending with Dominique Strauss-Kahn ejaculating on his hotel room maid, may well have been forced but lies told by the maid in the aftermath doomed any chance of putting the powerful Frenchman on trial, prosecutors say. In the fullest official account yet of what happened in the Manhattan Sofitel on May 14, prosecutors said there was a good chance that the then International Monetary Fund chief sexually assaulted Nafissatou Diallo, a Guinean immigrant. But the case collapsed because the maid told repeated lies and "their cumulative effect would be devastating," prosecutors said in their 25-page motion asking the court to dismiss all charges. DNA testing "established that

several stains located on the upper portion of the complainant's hotel uniform dress contained semen that yielded the defendant's DNA," the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said in the motion. Evidence was "consistent with a non-consensual encounter," prosecutors said. Although prosecutors and police found Diallo's story entirely credible, she quickly undermined her case by lying to investigators and to the grand jury that indicted Strauss-Kahn, the motion said. One issue was her constantly changing story about what she did immediately after the alleged attack, ranging from hiding fearfully in a corridor to returning to the room to clean after StraussKahn left. Most seriously, Diallo admitted

that she had entirely made up a story during her asylum application to the United States about being gang-raped in Guinea. During one session with prosecutors, she repeated the story with so much emotion that "she cried, spoke hesitatingly, and... even laid her head face down on a table in front of her." Later, she said "she had entirely fabricated the attack." This lie, prosecutors said, made her fatally vulnerable to cross examination in court, because Strauss-Kahn's attorneys would be able to argue to the jury that she had a history of successfully making up sex attacks. "Most significant is her ability to recount that fiction as a fact with complete conviction," the motion said. — AFP

Israel gives green light to Street View THE justice ministry said yesterday it has given the go-ahead for Google Street View to start photographing streets in Israel to put on its 3D-mapping website. The decision was taken last week by Israel's data protection watchdog, ILITA, which gave Google Street View the green light to send its cars to begin the process of collecting images, the ministry said. In its decision, ILITA asked that Street View provide the public with a reliable way to request that further details be blurred after the images are published online. Men held for blackmailing Italian priests UP to 100 priests in Italy were blackmailed by two men who used Facebook and Messenger to snare them, according to a police investigation. The men, who were arrested on suspicion of blackmail on 26 July, demanded up to €10,000 (RM42,632) from priests in return for keeping quiet about erotic webcam sessions and real sexual encounters, reported Italian weekly Panorama citing judicial sources, The Guardian reports. After seizing contact lists and records of virtual sex sessions from the house shared by the men, Diego Maria Caggiano, 35, and Giuseppe Trementino, 30, police believe the priests targetted were sharing details of potential sexual partners through a private Internet forum.

'Balconing' game may kill more AUTHORITIES at Spanish holiday resorts are warning of a fresh wave of deaths from a dangerous game played by drunken tourists that involves trying to jump off balconies into hotel swimming pools. The game of "balconing" has been made popular by YouTube and social networks, with daredevil jumps into swimming pools or from balcony to balcony being filmed with the videos published on the Internet, The Guardian reports. The game also includes other dares, according to authorities, with some people falling after trying to clamber from one balcony to another or playing other drunken games without taking into account the danger of falling. There have been three deaths and several injuries from balcony falls in the Balearic islands this year.

No way back for Fukushima folk

Cabinet secretary apologises after announcing area unsafe to live in for decades RESIDENTS who lived close to the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant are to be told their homes may be uninhabitable for decades, according to Japanese media reports. The Japanese prime minister, Naoto Kan, is expected to visit the area over the weekend to tell evacuees they will not be able to return to their homes, even if the operation to stabilise the plant's stricken reactors by January is successful. Kan's announcement will be the first time officials have publicly recognised radiation damage to areas near the plant could make them too dangerous to live in for at least a generation, effectively meaning some residents will never return to them, reports The Guardian.

A Japanese government source is quoted in local media as saying the area could be off-limits for "several decades". New data has revealed unsafe levels of radiation outside the 11km exclusion zone, increasing the likeliness entire towns will remain unfit for habitation. The exclusion zone was imposed after a series of hydrogen explosions at the plant following the earthquake and tsunami in March. "We can't rule out the possibility that there will be some areas where it will be hard for residents to return to their homes for a long time," said Yukio Edano, chief Cabinet secretary and face of the government during the disaster. "We are very sorry."

Transcripts of conversations between Dr Brian Lonergan and clinical co-ordinators at AMI appear to reveal the doctor thought staff at the clinic were engaging in ''illegal'' activities by providing medical advice when they were not qualified.

The transcripts also appear to reveal racial slurs, pushy sales tactics and Dr Lonergan's fears that some medicines prescribed were dangerous, The Age reports. AMI's treatments, which have not been subjected to clinical trials, cost up to

A$5,000 (RM15,480) for a two-year course and include lozenges, a nasal spray and penis injections. In one conversation, Dr Lonergan tells a clinical coordinator to give a patient a one-year contract for penis injections even though the

Women more likely to two-time than men A STUDY has claimed though men may have the reputation for straying, it is women who are more likely to get caught up in love triangles. The poll of 2,000 people found almost a quarter of women were romantically involved with more than one person at a time, while just 15 per cent of men were involved in two-timing. And of those love triangles, about 18 per cent started on social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter, reports The Times of India. The poll also showed half of them believed you could be in love with more than one person at a time. And high earners are more likely to stray than those on lower wages. Jo Hemmings, a relationship psychologist, said that while male love rats may be the biggest cheaters, driven by lust, opportunity and a misguided sense of entitlement, it is women, who tend to have a more complex view of relationships.

man told them he had nothing wrong with him. 'He wants to improve his sex life like those silly ads say,'' Dr Lonergan said. ''So, I've told him if he wants to be like the guys in the porn movies, we can do it… Go for broke. Here we go.''

Tea, coffee, milk best healthy beverages

TAKE A COFFEE BREAK: Study shows dairy and caffeinated drinks can be good for you

A NEW study has described old-school beverages like tea, coffee and low fat or chocolate milk, as the best elixirs for nutrition, health and workout recovery. Research indicates that tea strengthens the body's immune system, reduces buildup of plaque on arterial walls, and aids in the control and prevention of diabetes. Tea is an antioxidant-rich beverage containing more polyphenols than many fruits and vegetables, according to the study, reports The Times of India. Researchers suggested coffee consumption can lower cardiovascular risks as well as lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 50 per cent. Coffee also appears to have a positive effect on neurological diseases with coffee consumption possibly reducing the risk of both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The findings also detail the benefits of whole, low-fat, and chocolate milk when it comes to overall nutrition, bone density, weight loss, muscle-building and more.

Kardashian wedding was 'awkward'

LOS ANGELES

'I'm no good at sexy'

NOT everyone had the time of their lives at Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' epic wedding on Saturday. "It was awkward," one insider admits to Us Weekly of the super-lavish bash at a private estate in Montecito, California, which was taped for an E! special airing next month. "There were 100 crew members everywhere," explains the insider, "and people kept complaining they almost got hit by five camera guys everywhere they went." Also hampering the special day was the infernal racket! "The helicopters were so loud nobody could hear the ceremony," the insider said, adding that Kardashian, 30, and Humphries, 26, wore microphones for the taping.

Down-to-earth actress Mila Kunis works hard to look convincing on-screen

Mila Kunis is "not good" at being sexy. Although the Friends with Benefits star doesn't see herself as a sex symbol, she puts as much effort as possible into intimate scenes because she hates it when actresses don't make them convincing. "I'm not good at sexy but there are so many women on the big screen who are so false you just don't buy it," the petite 28-year-old said. "There's nothing about them that you believe. It feels so put on. You can feel them mug-

ging for the camera. "It's like their face is raping me, so I know I don't want to do that." Kunis is also famously down-to-earth in real life, which she attributes to her upbringing to a poor family in the US, after her mother and father moved from the Soviet Union when she was seven. She said to The Times newspaper: "I've been doing this (acting) since I was nine. It didn't happen overnight, so I like to think I'm not in a bubble. I live a normal life.

"My two best friends: one's a dentist, one's a teacher. We talk every single day. They're not in this industry, we all grew up poor, we all fully understand the value of a dollar." Kunis added she has also seen the perils of fame first hand and knows how Hollywood can go to some star's heads. "I've seen it eat people alive. It happens often. I think people lose sight of themselves because of what they do. What I do is not who I am."

Winslet escapes fire

OSCAR-WINNING actress Kate Winslet and members of Richard Branson's family escaped unharmed yesterday when a lightning storm hit the Virgin tycoon's Caribbean island home, which was destroyed in a blaze. Winslet carried Branson's 90-year-old mother Eve out of The Great House on

Necker Island as the flames took hold in the early hours of the morning. "She (Winslet) was staying there with her children and in fact it was she who carried my mother out of the house," Branson told Britain's ITV News. "She swept her up into her arms and got them out of the

house as fast as possible." Winslet said "it's like being in a film set where you're waiting for the words 'cut' but they just don't come," the entrepreneur added. "We had a bad tropical storm with winds up to 145kph. A big lightning storm came around 4am and hit the house." — Reuters

Splitsville for teen stars

LATER, DUDE: Gomez says goodbye to Bieber

TEEN singer Selena Gomez has reportedly dumped Justin Bieber after she found out that he sends SMSes to his ex-girlfriend, singer Jasmine Villegas. "The big headline-grabbing romance is over. All Selena wants to be with now is friends," dailystar quoted a friend as saying. In May, the teen stars were snapped together during a holiday on the Hawaiian island of Maui. "She doesn't feel Justin is quite mature enough yet to be in a longterm, stable relationship. She's in the market for someone a little older and more worldly-wise," said a source. Bieber is reportedly upset after the split. A friend said: "The irony is that now she only wants to be friends. Justin is heartbroken over Selena. He's free again, even though he doesn't want to be."

HEARTBROKEN: Bieber a 'reluctant' free man now

ZAC EFRON is furious after friends trashed his home. The 23-year-old actor is away from Los Angeles for several months shooting The Paperboy and Heartland so told his pals they could use the pool at his house while he was away. However, he soon regretted his decision when his parents visited Los Angeles and went to the property only to discover a huge mess in the garden. They instantly sent him a message to say: "The place looks like a bomb hit it." A source told National Enquirer magazine: "His pals had turned his backyard into a filthy mess filled with food wrappers, cans, bottles, towels, paper cups, etc." Zac took action and his pals are no longer allowed to relax in his garden while he is not there. The source added: "Zac was totally upset, immediately ordered the locks on his gate changed, then phoned his buddies and told them their pool privileges are revoked."

SINGER Amy Winehouse's mysterious death has garnered a lot of attention on the Internet, so much so it has emerged as the most Googled topic last month, reports the Sun. Apart from the late pop star, another top celebrity name that was searched the most was that of the Beckhams' newborn daughter Harper Seven, though her dad David only made it to fifth place. New Dragons' Den telly investor Hilary Devey, 54, made a surprising entry at number two and struggling Arsenal came top among searches for football clubs.

Posh is on the mend SUPERSTAR mum Victoria Beckham recently suffered a slipped disc, the Daily Mail reports. The 37-yearold fashion designer was reportedly in so much pain that she was struggling to lift her six-week-old daughter Harper Seven. But according to David Beckham's wife's tweet on Friday, she's recovering from her injury. "Thank you for your kind messages," she wrote. "I'm feeling much better and enjoying every precious minute with baby Harper. I'm so in love." Fortunately for her, hubby David, 36, is a hands-on dad. In addition to Harper Seven, the duo have three sons together: Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and Cruz, six.

Dare to read Azwan's b

By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my

twitter @klubbkiddkl “A LOT of artistes in Malaysia are the ‘same’ as me, but they avoid this topic like a plague, and remain hypocritical!” gushes loud and extremely controversial TV personality Azwan Ali midway through an interview. “They will never admit even if you cut them up! There are so many of them in the closet!” Of course as taboo as the topic of gender preferences, trust Azwan to be flippant about dishing his takes on the subject of his recently released semi-autobiographical book Selamat Jalan Dunia. The writer interrupts Azwan, to ask if the entertainer himself doesn’t find it a tad hypocritical, in being aloof about his own life as one of the most campy, flamboyant characters in the business. “I have never declared myself as being gay, a drag queen or such. There has never been any admission that I am gay or a transvestite, as I still know how to respect the name of my family and the industry, and there is a limitation to my declarations,” he said. And yes, while much is implied in the book, expect his answers to match that in the book, where nothing is answered. “Yes, it remains a question,” he says, dodging the bullet. “Nothing affects me, and

I don’t care if people say I don’t practise what I preach. Say what you want about the book that it’s a gimmick or pure rubbish, but there’s a lot of exclusivity behind what I have shared that has never been told and it answers several questions among my followers, including the issue of Tiga Siti. “People say I’m a pondan because of being rejected by the trio of names, and I have to admit the incidents surrounding it were a nightmare for me,” he said in reference to tabloid fodder that he switched teams to bat for after failing to woo Fauziah Latiff, Ziana Zain and Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, all there whom share the first name of ‘Siti’. While he skirts a confession UNVEILED: Datuk Yusof Haslam (second from right) launching the book in style at Tamarind Springs restaurant recently

t h a t was expected by most from his writing, Azwan brushes off the pressure mounting on him to take a stand and say something straightforward for once, with merely implying it. “If you want a direct confession, all I can say is give me a break,” he says without a hint of agitation, but a signal to move on to the next question. So what makes him an authority on the topic of transvestitism to actually pen a book, when he doesn’t include

an admission that he is a bona fide queen, so to speak? “What makes me an authority on the topic? My right to share my point of view! “It’s as simple as that. I’m nowhere near an authority to talk about the topic — but it’s my right.” Undoubtedly, there are those who bought the hype of the book, but in a year worth of waiting for it to be released, they will be disappointed, as a quick read reveals the book as not as risqué as initially imagined to be. “If there are those who are disappointed with the book in not being a total tell-all, all I can say is, I expect to return home a different person from my umrah,” said Azwan who is on his third umrah in Mecca, to return only near the end of the first week of Aidilfitri. “I can feel something’s going to happen — and going to umrah for the third time, I expect the next chapter of my life to begin and this is how I chose to tread in writing this

book.” Perhaps Azwan’s writing appears more shackled for a reason. “I learnt a lot and was constantly advised to keep changing the content, to add religious bits to balance the weight of the touchy issue. “Some of it may be nonsense to some, but there are bits that require research that people can take a lot from

“My intention, is simply for those who read, to take whatever they can take from it about the lesbian, gay, bi- and transgendered.” The book at times, rambles on, and Azwan admits his meanderings in writing are a reflection of his thoughts. “Maybe it has no conclusion, or it could just be utter rubbish, but I am who I am, and I will remain so.”

I wanted to share my experience, especially with those who fall into the category of sexual preference in reference. Whoever reads my book, they can take my stories, my experiences, both the good and bad, and go ahead with it and do with it what they choose. — Azwan Ali what has been written.” So what actually possessed him to write a book? “Frankly, it has been my personal desire. I had the thought when I was in Mecca and upon returning, I sat with several ulama for advice and they said to go for it as long as my niat or intention was pure.

The book he stresses, was a personal dream come true. “The third umrah I’m heading for, hopefully will be a conclusion to finding out who I am, and a blessing for completing this book. “I brought the manuscript to my last umrah, and went around the Kaabah with it,

and this time I am going to go around it with the actual book.” Commemorating his 21st year in the entertainment industry, Azwan says his book is worth a read, if only because of his own proclamation that he is the worst artiste in Malaysia. “I am! Not in terms of controversy as there are many out there who have been the target of worse gossip, but in terms of being attacked, I have gotten the worst treatment imaginable by being publicly ridiculed and banned numerous times. “I wanted to share my experience, especially with those who fall into the category of sexual preference in reference. Whoever reads my book, they can take my stories, my experiences, both the good and bad, and go ahead with it and do with it what they choose.” His new-found love for writing will not stop at Selamat Jalan Dunia. “It’s my new passion, and yes, if I do get an opportunity, I will continue with another book. And the topic will be about my family which everyone knows, has its own stories." (Azwan’s brother is Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Gombak MP and Selangor State assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa, Azmin Ali, and his estranged sister is Ummi Hafilda, who continues to be a recurring character in local politics). “It won’t reveal too much in the sense of not respecting my family name. I won’t buka pekung or spill the beans too much, but what I write will depend on what advice I get in preparing for it.” It seems that Azwan may just opt out of the glamourous spotlights he has craved thus far. “I have long regarded myself out of the so-called glamourous world. I’ve been shunned from TV, and I know people are talking about it — and my umrah is about seeking strength. “I could just come back and totally shun this 'world' and yes, it may be a goodbye for good to this world. "I don’t know what will happen, but I will be open to changes and they may just come sooner than expected.”  SELAMAT Jalan Dunia is priced at RM21.90 and available in major bookstores nationwide.

Sweet symphony for noble cause By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my

CAMPY: Azwan is one of the most flamboyant characters in the business

FOR those at the charity recital A Celebration of Music: Butterfly Lovers and Love Songs, it was an evening of rejoicing in the sweetness of music. The musical affair was hosted by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, a not-for-profit entity that seeks to give back to society through making quality education available to deserving Malaysian students through provision of scholarships and research grants. Held at Sunway University on Friday, the two-hour charity recital featured a 12-piece ensemble from the 2011 International Ensemble of the Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA). Led by conductor Eugene Pok, the ensemble charmed the audience with their versatility and melodic innovation as they mesmerised with their combined talents on violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano and flute. The evening started off with a presentation by Sunway students from the Department of Performance and Media with their original movement piece The Growing Seeds. Then Pok gave a delightful introduction of Butterfly Lovers. Recited in a humourous manner, he recounted the famous Chinese legend of a tragic love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Known as the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet, Butterfly Lovers tells the story of how

VERSATILE: The PSPA International Ensemble led by Pok treating the audience with their combined talents Zhu disguises herself as a man to attend classes only meant for men. There, she meets Liang and they feel a strong affinity towards each other. After sometime, Zhu returns home but Liang only realises that she is a woman later on, after his visit to her home. Sealing their love for each other, their reunion is shortlived after Zhu’s parents arrange for her marriage to rich man Ma. Liang is heartbroken and soon becomes ill and dies. On her wedding day, Zhu visits her lover’s grave and bit-

terly asks for the grave to open up. Mysteriously, the grave opens up with a clap of thunder and she throws herself into the grave. Their spirits turn into beautiful butterflies and fly away together, never apart. Keeping the romantic sentiments alive, the PSPA international ensemble together with violin soloist Singaporean Grace Lee performed a violin concerto that got the attention everyone in the audience. Taking centrestage for this performance, Lee skillfully gave the audience a slice of romantic harmony composed by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao with help from the ensemble. Originally written for a fullsymphony orchestra, it is now a rare and unique chamber music, performed beautifully by the ensemble. After the short intermission, the crowd was treated to the strong vocals of Penang-born Tan Wei Han, one of the top tenors in Malaysia. Tan’s vocals got many from the audience enthralled, as he presented his take on Un Giorno Per Noi,

O Sole Mio and Granada before leaving the ensemble to play their version of Franz Schubert’s Quintet in A: D667 Trout. He came back on stage for three more songs ending with the well-known Con Te Partiro (Time To Say Goodbye) before giving the audience a chance to smile with his ensemble’s version of Charlie Chaplin’s Smile. Before calling it a night, PSPA together with the Sunway University Ensemble shared their version of Liebertango by Piazzolla. In conjunction with the charity recital, members of PSPA provided free classes to the public to improve their skills in a range of musical instruments on Saturday. All proceeds from the charity recital will be channelled to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. Launched in March 2010 by Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Abdul Razak, it carries the mandate of Sunway Education Trust, which has given out more than RM66 million in scholarships to students across Malaysia.

Close to amazing

By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my TITLE: One Amazing Thing AUTHOR: Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni PUBLISHER: Penguin Books RATING: 6/10 IMAGINE being trapped in a building with limited water, food and knowing that the next breath you take may be your last — all in the company of strangers. That is the predicament of nine individuals brought together by fate and a huge earthquake while waiting for their visas at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. When the earthquake first strikes, Uma, a graduate student who goes to the consulate to get a visa to visit her retired parents in ‘shining India’, mistakes the tremor for a cable car. Looking around, she notices

Lying schemes revealed TITLE: Is He Lying to You? What Men Don’t Want You to Know AUTHOR: Dan Crum PUBLISHER: Advantage Quest RATING: 6/10

the glum Indian woman at the reception desk, a Caucasian couple in their 60s, a young Indian man around 25, an old Chinese woman with a teenage granddaughter and an AfricanAmerican man. As they wait to be rescued or to die, they try to make themselves feel better by telling each other stories — with every one of them recalling ‘one amazing thing’ in their life. As they share secrets and feelings they have never shared before, they also reveal qualities that make them human. Engaging, dramatic and almost impossible to put down, One Amazing Thing is a book that depicts raw and real emotions of ordinary humans living their lives. If there was one flaw in the book, it is that the story is not completely over and there is no ending. One can almost smell the sequel in the air, but we may have to wait for a bit.

LIKE the title suggests, this book is one for the ladies. With the philosophy 'Don’t Just Date, Investigate', Crum reveals the howto’s of getting past the conversation and getting into the nitty-gritty of detecting deception. If you have been lied to in the past; fear you are being lied to now; or if you are concerned about being lied to in the future, this book will help you discover the

warning signs that men emanate when they communicate. Crum, who used to work with the CIA, has studied human interaction while he interviewed, polygraphed and interrogated subjects in his line of work. After spending years deciphering liars for work, he decided to use his skills for a more “personal” reason — to help his women friends figure out if their partners are lying to them. Is He Lying to You? is a revealing book by The Dating Detective that gives readers a new perspective on verbal and non-verbal signs that a person is lying, not just in relationships but also for day-to-day conversations too.

Communication challenges

TITLE: How to Communicate with Anyone AUTHOR: David Hirst PUBLISHER: Advantage Quest RATING: 5/10

COMMUNICATION can be enjoyable and fun or a nightmare of pain and suffering, as many of us often experience, especially here in Malaysia, where a shopping trip can pose a linguistic challenge between two parties. The book gives a guide to communicating, in a wide va-

riety of situations to help avoid any breakdown. When dealing with people in general, good language skills help but there is a lot more to work on. First impressions can make or break a potential relationship — having the skill of listening, questioning as well as using social intelligence in everyday interactions, help. One interesting chapter in the book is The Law of Attraction — Being Positive. This famous law asserts that we attract moods, emotions and people that are

similar to how we feel. While encouraging people to adopt the law, Hirst cautions readers to have a healthy dose of skepticism regarding his claims. He suggests that if you want to be rich, there is no point just to think about it but it is also important to act on opportunities as they are presented. There is nothing new in these chapters that haven’t been read before, but some of Hirst’s insights may be a good reminder for daily communication.

SHAH ALAM: football/ MALAYSIA CUP

Safiq's rhythm and blues Selangor must be more attack minded to win Cup, says skipper

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

NATIONAL and Selangor skipper Safiq Rahim (pic) has called on his team to find their rhythm soon in order to win the Malaysia Cup. And the midfielder knows they must add bite to their attack to be successful. Selangor finished second to Kelantan in the recently concluded Super League but failed to shine in the FA Cup. "It has b een a f r ustrating season for me and Selangor so far. I'm also disappointed that Malaysia couldn't create history and qualify for the Asian Zone of the World Cup 2014 qualifiers," said Safiq. He could not play a part in the second-leg of the qualifiers against Singapore as he was sentoff in the first-leg. However, he now wants to put all that behind and concentrate on helping Selangor win the Malaysia Cup. "We have a strong side and all the players want to improve and win the prestigious Cup. We would be underachieving if we didn't do well in this competition," he said. However, Safiq insists Selangor must not b e that conf ident

despite being the most successful side in the history of the Malaysia Cup. Selangor are one of the seeded teams in the competition. The 32-t ime w inners have b e en d r aw n w it h Ku a l a Lu mpu r, T-Team and Police in Group D.

KUALA LUMPUR: ATHLETICS

Narendran's thunder Bolt experience IT was a moment of a lifetime for S. Narendran. Not only did he get to meet the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, but also relived his memories of being an athlete. "I felt like I was an athlete again. It gave me the feeling of wanting to put on my spikes once more," said Narendran. The 25-year-old won the Puma Faas-Test against 16 competitors from across the continent in Daegu, South Korea last week. "Meeting Bolt was a greater experience than winning the

challenge," he said. The challenge is a unique street sprinting challenge where runners race against Bolt's own 100m speed record. Narendran is a former national sprinter with a personal best of 10.69 seconds. However, he had to cut his athletics days short in 2009 after suffering a shin fracture in 2007. He won three gold medals at the Asean Schools Championship in Sarawak in 2004. He emerged tops in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m.

Not her best

Kendrick's doping ban reduced

But Sharapova glad to get the win

FOURTH-SEEDED Russian Maria Sharapova admitted her 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the Cincinnati WTA title final yesterday was not her best performance. Sharapova, 24, earned her second title of the season after a triumph in Rome. She improved on her runner-up finish to Kim Clijsters here last year and gave herself a momentum boost prior to WHAT A RELIEF: Sharapova won despite a stream of unforced errors which included 11 double faults — AFP photo

the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season that starts on Monday in New York. But it was no easy matter. "Not my best tennis today, but was proud of my fight and glad to get the win," she posted on her Facebook page. An aggressive start saw Sharapova took a 4-1 lead, Jankovic went on a roll, breaking the Russian three times in a row and taking the

opening set when Sharapova double-faulted. The shift recalled last year's final, when Sharapova failed to convert three match points against Clijsters and ended up losing 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Despite a stream of unforced errors — including a total of 11 double faults — Sharapova finally took the second set, winning the last five points of the tiebreaker. "That's pretty much it, putting five points together that were well-played," Sharapova added. The third set started with six straight breaks of serve before Sharapova held for a 4-3 lead. Jankovic double-faulted twice to surrender the next game, leaving Sharapova to serve out the match after two hours and 49 minutes. "It's been a great year for me so far," said Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam champion who reached the final at Wimbledon last month. "It can always be better or worse. I'm definitely proud I've gone further than the disappointing loss here last year." Jankovic, who has battled back, wrist and ankle injuries, was playing in just her second final of the season, after her runner-up finish in Monterrey. "This match could have gone either way," she said. "I had my chances. It showed the match is not over until you shake the hand." With her game in shape, this week appeared to offer her a golden opportunity thanks to wealth of injury absences. Clijsters withdrew with the abdominal strain that will keep her from trying for a third straight US Open title. ry forced out third-seeded Victoria Azarenka. Jankovic reached the semifinals on a walkover when China's Peng Shuai withdrew with a hip injury. Despite the defeat, Jankovic was upbeat about her week. "I'm pretty unpredictable," the Serb said. "If somebody told me I was going to play a final here, I would right away sign the paper." Meanwhile, Germany's Andrea Petkovic, who is suffering from a slight cartilage tear in her knee says she will recover just in time for the US Open. "Thanks for all the nice messages, guys. I'm positive that my knee will be fine for the Open," she tweeted. — Agencies

UNITED STATES tennis player Robert Kendrick's doping ban, imposed after he consumed a pill to combat jet lag which contained a banned substance, was cut from 12 to eight months on appeal this morning. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said they accepted Kendrick had not intended to enhance his performance but said he had not taken necessary precautions, instead relying on the Internet for advice on the product. Kendrick, who tested positive for methylhexaneamine (MHA) at the French Open in May, had wanted the ban cut to three months to allow him to play at next month's US Open. The International Tennis Federation (ITF), which say the onus is on players to make sure they do not take banned substances, banned

"I'm going to London for medical examination, and come back to Valencia to say goodbye to everybody as you deserve...thanks so much! — Juan Mata VILLARREAL: football/ CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

MADRID: football/ PRIMERA LIGA

Kaka wants to stay in Madrid KAKA has ruled out a move to a quartet of clubs, including Arsenal, after insisting he is not planning to leave Real Madrid during this transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder has been a subject of transfer speculation since last summer, following a disappointing debut campaign in Spain's Primera Liga for Real in 2009-2010. The 29-year-old also spent

much of last season sidelined with injury, and there have been reports linking him with moves to his former club AC Milan, as well as Arsenal and Inter Milan. In recent days, French big spenders Paris St Germain have also been reported to be interested in the former Sao Paulo star. Kaka, however, has continuously insisted that he wants to carr y on play-

ing for Los Blancos and has once again stated his desire to gain manager Jose Mourinho's trust and win back his place in the first team. "My plan is to remain with Real and to obtain the confidence of the manager," he told Marca. Kaka's current contract with the former Spanish and European champions runs until the summer of 2015.

Act of peace Barca bid to ease Real tensions after bust up

Garrido confident of overturning deficit

VILLARREAL boss Juan Carlos Garrido is demanding total football as he reveals his recipe for success against Odense in the Champions League. Odense will have the advantage, having started their domestic season earlier, with La Liga still in hiatus following a players' strike. A 1-0 aggregate loss greets the Spanish side tomorrow, but Garrido feels they have what it takes to ensure they go through to the group stages of the competition. "There is great expectation

around this game because the whole of Spain is counting on us," Garrido told AS.com. "Something very important is at stake and this will motivate the players plenty. We are playing to get into the group stages and so, the game will be very attractive." Garrido believes the key to unlocking Odense is to play at maximum levels throughout the game. "We need to play our best football and this will be key. We have to start from here as we want to play in the Champions League," he concluded. However, Odense coach Henrik Clausen feels his players can transfer some of the motivation picked up in their 3-1 win over Lyngby in the league to hold firm in Spain. "That game was a perfect last test (before Villarreal)," he said. "We got some fresh confidence in the tank, and I got to see some more of my substitutes in action — and they performed well too. E U ROPE A N champi ons Barcelona have refrained from making an official complaint against Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho for last week's eye-poking incident, and have called for an easing of tensions with their arch rivals. B arc a and R e a l pl ay ers confronted each other on the pitch during their explosive Spanish Super Cup second-leg at the Nou C amp, w here red cards were flashed and Mourinho jabbed Barca assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye. "We have decided not to (make an official complaint

against Mourinho)," Barca president Sandro Rosell told a meeting of supporters groups this morning, who had called for the club to act. "The public have given their opinion. They are very clear that what this person did wasn't right. The (Spanish football) federation will act if they want to. "We have to act sensibly, reduce the levels of tension and try not to stir it up or we'll end up killing each other in the street. The problem isn't ours, it is theirs." Clasicos in under a month were characterised by an increasingly poisonous atmosphere between the sides, which reappeared in the second-half of last Thursday's match. Marcelo's lunging tackle on Barca new boy Cesc Fabregas sparked a melee on the touchline, and led to red cards being shown to the Brazilian, his German teammate Mesut Oezil and Barca striker David Villa. The most controversial incident, however, was when Mourinho walked up behind Vilanova in the middle of the fracas and poked him

in the eye, before strolling away as the Barca man cuffed him on the back of the head. Mourinho denied the incident had happened after the match and his spokesman Eladio Parames told daily El Mundo: "Jose doesn't ask for forgiveness. "He is very clear that he is defending Madrid. All he is interested in is his work, and to make sure that the club where he works wins as many titles as possible. "But if his rivals work with the dark arts, he is absolutely clear he will not remain impassive." — Reuters

VALENCIA striker Roberto Soldado insists winger Juan Mata's transfer to Chelsea will not cause an uproar at the Mestalla. Both clubs announced on Sunday evening they had reached an agreement on Mata's transfer to the Premier League, with a fee of around €27m. Spain international Mata, who joined Valencia from Real Madrid B in 2007, established himself as a key player at the Mestalla and his departure comes as a blow to the club, who are competing in the Champions League. However, Valencia are still trying to pay off huge debts and Soldado says Mata's sale is understandable. "We all hoped he would stay, but an offer from a tremendous club, one of the best four clubs in the world, came in, and this was a great opportunity for Valencia and for Mata," Soldado told EFE. "This was an act of responsibility and an example for the rest of the clubs who keep signing, even though they keep owing players money." Soldado also believes Valencia are in good shape after recruit-

ing the likes of Pablo Piatti, Sergio Canales and Dani Parejo during this transfer window. "The club have strengthened very well this summer, no player is indispensable and this season is no exception," he said. "This season, the squad will be more competitive than last term. In the dressing room we are convinced we can play on the same level, and our expectations will be the same as two days ago. "There are players who can do it (play in the same position as Mata) — this is their opportunity to show they can play at Mata's level," said Soldado.

Brum look at unsettled Baird WEST BROM are interested in out-of-favour Fulham defender Chris Baird, with other clubs also showing interest. Baird has found himself frozen out since the arrival of Martin Jol as manager and has not been involved in Fulham's opening two Premier League games. West Brom manager Roy Hodgson sees Baird's versatility as a big plus, in that he can play in defence and midfield, as he knows from his time as Fulham manager. Jol has made enquiries for at least four fullbacks, with Serge Aurier, Miguel Lopes, Cristian Zaccardo and Samuel Inkoom among them.

Moroccan joins Revolution NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION have signed 29-year-old Moroccan forward Monsef Zerka from Iraklis FC, recently relegated from the top flight in Greece. "We are looking forward to Monsef's arrival," Michael Burns, Revolution vicepresident of player personnel, said. "He is an experienced player who will provide us with another attacking option." Zerka was eligible to play for either the French or Moroccan national teams because of his dual citizenship and chose to represent Morocco, with whom he has earned 12 caps and scored three goals. Zerka will fill the team's sixth international player spot out of a possible eight, and will be officially added to the Revolution's roster pending visa approval.

ALAN PARDEW (pic) hailed his Newcastle United’s derby success over Sunderland then told of his determination to give the club’s fans another lift. Ryan Taylor’s superb free-kick settled the 145th derby between the two sides, with the goal giving Pardew’s side a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light. Pardew yesterday travelled to Holland to watch £6m-rated leftback Erik Pieters in action for PSV Eindhoven against Den Haag. Pieters is seen as a natural replacement for Jose Enrique, who moved to Liverpool, and when asked about Newcastle’s interest after the game, the 23-year-old said: "I’m open to this step — it seems a great challenge.

Devils strike RM195.2m training-kit deal

MANCHESTER UNITED struck a training-kit sponsorship deal yesterday, the Premier League champions saying they believed it was the first such agreement in English football. United said they had agreed a four-year contract with express and logistics company DHL. While the club did not give exact details, a source with knowledge of the deal said it was worth £40m (RM195.2m). That is more than the Old Trafford team received in the early 2000s from a shirt agreement with Vodafone, although it is less than the £80m media reports have said their existing shirt deal with insurance brokerage Aon is worth. "This deal breaks new ground in the English game," United chief executive David Gill said in a statement. "We are delighted DHL has chosen to pioneer training kit sponsorship with the club. Their global presence and

international standing are a perfect fit for the world's most popular football club." The deal comes in a month where the club has been linked with a US$1b (RM2.96b) Singapore stock market listing. United have declined to comment on speculation, but

sources with direct knowledge of the situation have said a preliminary application has been filed and media reports have said 25 to 30 per cent of the club will be sold. United won a record 19th league title last season and their on-field success has been matched by strong commercial

revenue figures. In May, quarterly financial results showed there was a 30 per cent rise in commercial revenue compared with the same period the previous year. DHL, part of Deutsche Post AG, will have their logo on training kit worn by first,

reserve and youth team players during domestic competitions. Chief spokesman Dan Johnson said the Premier League was not aware of any other English clubs having their training kit sponsored, but added the national team had a similar deal for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In addition to the DHL contract, United also announced a three-year partnership deal with Vietnamese mobile telecoms company Beeline, the latest in a string of "territory specific" agreements that has contributed to commercial revenue growth. "The (Beeline) deal will give the club's estimated 16 million fans in Vietnam a chance to see all the goals scored, as well as exclusive interviews, news and behind-the-scene access — bringing them closer to Old Trafford than ever before," United said in a news release. — Reuters

Wenger sets sights on trio, finally ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger has lodged bids for Lille’s Eden Hazard, Rennes’ Yann M’Vila and Everton’s Phil Jagielka as he attempts to bring in significant reinforcements before the close of the transfer window, reported Daily Mirror. The Gunners are said to have offered €17.2m for M’Vila and in excess of €22.9m for Hazard. The value of the latest bid for Jagielka is not known, but would presumably represent an improvement on the €11.4m proposal turned down by Everton earlier in the summer. Wenger has reportedly set his sights on midfield enforcer

M’Vila as he looks to add bite and physical presence to his side, while tricky winger Hazard is believed to have been on Arsenal's radar for the last two years. Jagielka is thought to be preferred to Bolton’s Gary Cahill by the Frenchman, who considers bringing in a new centreback his top priority. The sale of midfielder Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and likely departure of Samir Nasri to Manchester City ensures Wenger should now possess the funds to conclude all three deals, although negotiations will have to be swift with the transfer window set to close next Wednesday.

Arsenal fans have so far been frustrated with Wenger's inability or unwillingness to act decisively in the transfer market this summer, with Lille attacker Gervinho so far the only arrival of proven quality. But after a poor start to the league campaign, and Champions League qualification still hanging in the balance, Wenger now appears ready to splash the cash in order to save his side’s season. Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Robert Pires said Wenger must bring in experience to complement the promising young talent or face more of

the club’s big names wanting to leave. Besides Fabregas, Gael C l i c hy a n d E m m a nu e l Eboue have already departed this summer, with Nicklas Bendtner likely to follow. Pires, a key figure of the last Arsenal side to win the Premier League title in 2004, believes his former boss must bring in experienced players if the club are to once again compete for the biggest trophies at home and Europe. "I don’t think that they can rival the likes of City or Chelsea but you can’t win just with young players," he told French TV station Canal Plus.

Transfer speculation amuses Doyle's teammates STRIKER Kevin Doyle denied reports linking him to Arsenal and Liverpool after admitting speculation over his future causes much mirth at Wolves. The Republic of Ireland international was linked with a £10m move to Anfield in yesterday's Press, while Arsene Wenger is known to be an advocate of Doyle's talents. Juventus are also said to

have a long-standing admiration of his striking ability. Indeed, his growing harem of suitors will no doubt have been pleased with his goal as Wolves overcame Fulham 2-0 on Sunday. But the bashful marksman tried his best to laugh off the speculation. "It didn't put me off at all — it was funny. It was better being linked with those teams, I suppose," he told the Express

and Star. "I will just get on with things. The manager and the lads have a laugh at me." Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was typically forthright in his assessment of the way strikers Steven Fletcher and Doyle dovetailed during the game. "It was an awesome performance from Doyle and Fletcher. They were the epitome of the team," he said. "They

led from the front and worked the defence really hard. And Doyle deserved his goal from a fabulous performance. "He carved the first opening for himself and a couple of the lads might have been complaining he didn't lay it off, but I thought he was right to have the shot. "I think he was just knackered and off balance at the end and put it over the bar. "But his goal was terrific."

Kuyt agent confirms link INTER MILAN are reported to be looking at Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt, whose workrate and commitment to the cause, even when off form, has endeared him to the Reds' fans. Kuyt is good friends with Inter's Wesley Sneijder whose own future remains in doubt and that could have a bearing on any decision he makes. The Italian giants made an offer for the 31year-old last summer during the brief tenure of Rafa Benitez, but were fruitless in their attempts to bring Kuyt to San Siro. "Inter Milan have made an attractive offer for Dirk and he has to think about it," Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen told RTV West. "However, the two clubs have yet to agree on a deal."

Blacks Cats hunt firepower AFTER the home defeat to Newcastle, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce still believes he is short of the most expensive element — a reliable striker. They want another centre forward and ideally, want a left-sided forward, with Bruce eager to persuade Craig Bellamy to come from Manchester City. He would also still like either Peter Crouch from Tottenham or Papiss Cisse from Freiburg, with both costing around the £10m to £12m mark. Crouch would be ideal but is not keen on the north east, while the gamble with Cisse is that despite a good goalscoring record, he is not proven in the Premier League.

STORARI

CHELSEA and Juventus held talks over the weekend on the future of goalkeeper Marco Storari. The 34-year-old was once a target when he was at Fiorentina, and following his performances standing in for Gianluigi Buffon last season, Chelsea consider him an ideal addition to their squad. Juventus would like to negotiate with a deal for long-time target Alex, but Chelsea are reluctant to move the Brazilian on while they have concerns about defensive back-up. Alex is keen on a move to Juventus if they can strike a deal, but Andre Villas-Boas would need another centreback.

Stale Blues

Chelsea must add Modric to Mata's signing to shine again, says Cascarino FORMER Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes the Blues have gone stale and need Juan Mata and Luka Modric to inject some life into their side. Andre Villas-Boas' side struggled to a 2-1 home win over West Brom last Saturday, following a disappointing stalemate with Stoke on the opening weekend. Chelsea agreed a deal to bring Valencia playmaker Mata to Stamford Bridge and are still favourites to prise Modric — who was left out of the Tottenham side who faced Manchester United at Old Trafford this morning. And Cascarino says it is imperative Chelsea make both big-money signings. "They (Chelsea) need more because they're stale," he told Sky Sports. "Yes, they've got four points, but they were really poor against Stoke and they struggled a bit against West Brom. "They just looked methodical, ponderous, with no pace. Mata will inject a bit more, but I do think there is a need for someone like Modric. "He's such a class player, like David Silva. He gets on

the ball, he plays those passes, finds little gapes between teams which Chelsea have desperately needed. For me, it's all a little bit stale, and having him in the team will give them so many more options. "Mata will add to the team with his pace and ability to get a goal from distance." Sp u r s m a n a g e r Ha r r y Redknapp said Modric did not play against United because 'his head is not right'. It was also reported yesterday that Modric was on strike and told his manager he had no intention of playing for Spurs again. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is adamant that Modric is not for sale, but Cascarino says Spurs are simply delaying the inevitable and are facing a losing battle to keep the 25-yearold Croatia international. "Players try to force the issue, but don't get misled — sometimes clubs like to give the impression that a player's not prepared to play and they are ready to do business as well," he said. "They try and put all the onus on the player. I don't know the full details of the Modric case, but there's always

A Mata of urgency: Modric (left) and Mata will add much-needed pace to the Chelsea side — GETTY photo

two sides to the story — and Spurs are willing to sell him. "Once a player's head gets turned it's very, very difficult not to want to go to a club where you would win things. "Also financially, it makes a big difference. Yes, he might be earning £40,000 (RM196m) but if they can offer him £100-

110,000 a week, that's going to be tempting. And we all fail with temptation. "I think Modric has probably had his head turned and sees the move as one to a club that's probably going to win things and I think it is going to be very hard for Redknapp to keep him."

Dalglish defends spending spree LIVERPOOL manager Kenny Dalglish defended his mega spending at the club. Dalglish has spent £114m since January, but four points from their opening two games this season means not even the bank manager looks worried. Asked if he thought he had paid over the odds for any of his new players, he said: "If you want to buy any of those players, you'll pay more than I did. "You want to put a bid in? I'm not interested. "We're interested in improving and the prices we paid are what we've paid. Bold or stupid? Time will tell." Dalglish also revealed his summer spending may not be over, hinting there may be even more recruits before the transfer window closes. "It’s inevitable there will be movement and someone might come in. But I cannot foresee the future," he said.

Barry: Silva's just amazing for City MANCHESTER CITY'S Gareth Barry paid tribute to teammate and playmaker David Silva following their 3-2 win over Bolton at Reebok Stadium on Sunday. Spain international Silva, who joined City from Valencia, impressed last season after a slow start to his Premier League career, and he has picked up where he left off at the start of this campaign. He was the star of the show in the 4-0 win over Swansea last Monday, and again pulled the strings on Sunday. Barry grabbed the goal of the game against Bolton with a superb strike from distance, but he was quick to acknowledge the contribution of Silva, who opened the scoring. "Silva has started well this season," Barry told

Sky Sports. "He played fantastic for us last season and has been fantastic again in the first couple of games this term as well. "The manager (Roberto Mancini) said in the week we need to score 10 to 15 more goals than last season and we've started well with seven goals in two games. But now we need to continue that." Barry admitted that he was relieved to come away from the game with three points after Bolton fought hard until the final whistle. "We knew what kind of game it was going to be," he said. "Kevin Davies caused us a tough game and he's hard to mark. But fortunately, we got the three points and we're absolutely delighted with that." Silva was gracious in receiving the accolade but

insisted the team performance was more important. "I’m happy with the last two games and thanks for the (Man-of-the-Match) bottle of champagne, but it’s for the team," said the 25-year-old. Silva was also named as "Man-of-the-Match" against Swansea, where he also scored a goal besides creating openings for his strikers. Meanwhile, Barry believes striker Carlos Tevez still has a future at City after the Argentine made his first appearance this season in the match against Bolton. Te v e z h a d p u b l i c l y expressed his desire to leave City, but a lack of interest from teams due to the 27-year-old's high transfer fee and wage demands, prevented him from

switching clubs. "We saw last season how much we relied on Tevez, Sergio Aguero started on fire and hopefully, Carlos can be

a part of it too," said Barry. "He got a great reception from the fans and he did his bit. I’m sure he’ll get his chance."

STRIKER Danny Welbeck scored one goal and created another to inspire a youthful Manchester United team to a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in an entertaining Premier League match at Old Trafford this morning. Any doubts about manager Alex Ferguson’s decision to field a starting line-up with an average age of just 23 were dispelled just after an hour, when 20-year-old striker Welbeck headed in a pinpoint cross from 22-year-old midfielder Tom Cleverley. Welbeck’s superb backheel set up Anderson’s sweet strike in the 76th minute and Wayne Rooney added the third with a late header as the champions continued the fantastic home form that propelled them to the title last season. “We just took off in the second-half,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “It tells you we still believe in young players... more so when you see the ability they’ve got.” United, who dropped only two points at Old Trafford

on their way to a record 19th league title, maintained their perfect start after last weekend’s win over West Brom. Ferguson kept faith with the youngsters who served notice in the Community Shield season curtain raiser that they would be keeping the more established players on their toes. They did not let him down as they game set off at a fast tempo, with Cleverley sending Spurs keeper Brad Friedel, almost twice the age of some United players, diving at full stretch to keep out his eighth minute strike. Winger Ashley Young headed just wide after a great pass from Rooney as United tested a well-organised Spurs defence. Tottenham had their own chances but lacked the spark of Luka Modric, who had been left out of the team with manager Harry Redknapp saying the Croat’s head was “not in the right place” amid speculation he could be leaving the club.

The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute when defender Chris Smalling, another of the new generation at the age of 21, laid the ball back for Cleverley, who whipped in a cross that Welbeck sent powering into the bottom left corner. Bursting with confidence, Welbeck then attempted an overhead kick that landed straight in the hands of Friedel, while indefatigable Rooney — something of an old hand at 25 — went close with a freekick that Friedel did well to tip round the post. Welbeck, back at United after a loan spell at Sunderland last season, set up the second goal with a cheeky backheel to an unmarked Anderson, who sent the ball flying into the net after a move that started at the other end of the pitch. The third goal owed everything to United’s old timers with substitute Ryan Giggs unleashing a right-footed cross that Rooney headed goalwards off the top of his new hair transplant three minutes from time.

Young United keeper David De Gea will have been relieved to have kept a clean sheet after a shaky start to life in England, and made good saves off Rafael van der Vaart and Tom Huddlestone. Jermain Defoe also struck a late effort against the post. Spurs were playing their

first game of the new season after their scheduled opener at home to Everton last weekend was postponed following rioting in London. “There was nothing in the game until they scored the first goal,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “The goal just turned the game.” — Reuters

Police rescue Obi Mikel’s father

FINALLY FREED: Michael Obi (pic), the kidnapped father of Chelsea footballer John Obi Mikel sits at the office of Kano State police commissioner after he was freed today — AFP photo

THE kidnapped father of Chelsea footballer John Obi Mikel was freed this morning after a police raid in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, the police commissioner here announced. “Obi was rescued and six suspects were arrested, five men and a woman,” Kano State police commissioner Ibrahim Idris told journalists, speaking of Michael

Obi. “Obi is here with us as you can see.” No ransom was paid, Idris said, and a suspect led police to the house where Obi was being held. Obi described his Aug 12 kidnapping in the central city of Jos and said he had been beaten. A van in military colour overtook him and blocked his way as he was driving

home from work, he said. Two men in military uniform jumped out and asked him to follow them, according to Obi. “They forcefully pushed me into the van and when I asked them where we were going to, they said I should wait and see,” he said. “They wound up the window so nobody could hear me even if I had screamed.

They beat me to a pulp and only stopped when I became weak.” He said they sought a ransom of 10 million naira (RM190,300) and eventually drove him to Kano, hundreds of kilometres away from Jos. Police did not comment on whether legitimate soldiers were involved. None of the arrested suspects were members of the military. — AFP
