Mother-of-three knifed four times by heartless handbag snatcher in full view of horrified patrons and staff HE came armed with a blade and evil intentions. And when mother-ofthree Wini Roswita Abdullah dared to refuse his demand to hand over her handbag, he pulled out the knife and viciously plunged it into her repeatedly in full view of the public. This was the terrifying scenario which faced 36-yearold Wini, who was stabbed four times by the maniac in the 10pm incident on Tuesday night. The insurance consultant was having coffee with a female friend at the ground floor cafe in Ampang Point an hour before the attack. Speaking to The Malay Mail from her bed in Ampang Puteri Hospital, Wini said she and her friend were having a conversation when they were interrupted by a stranger. “We suddenly realised a

By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my man in his 30s, wearing a snow cap and jacket, had approached our table. In a menacing voice, he demanded I hand over my belongings,” recalled Wini. “I was stunned. I remember asking ‘who are you, I don’t know you and why should I give you my handbag’,” she said, adding a quick glance at her friend saw her equally frozen in fear. Wini said she instinctively reached over to shield her handbag, placed in a chair next to her, as she feared the man might grab it. Instead, he brandished a knife from inside his jacket and plunged the blade into her back. “I didn’t know he had a knife and I wasn’t facing him directly. As I was bent over

my bag, I felt a blinding pain in my back and I just knew I had been stabbed.” Instead of stopping, the man continued stabbing her no less than four times in full view of shocked patrons and staff, all of whom were too stunned to react. Wini’s friend finally snapped out of her initial shock, and grabbed her own handbag and threw it at the man, who then grabbed it. “It was only then he stopped his attack. He then snatched my handbag, which I was still gripping, and coolly left the cafe.” A passer-by, who witnessed the attack from outside the shop, gave chase. He saw the attacker clamber onto a motorcycle parked in front of the shop, followed by two more men on another bike, believed to be accomplices. • Continued on pg3

Hush-hush on tender award Officials 'pass the buck' on possible breach in Tourism Ministry procedures

Doctor beheaded by his Bangladeshi gardener A DOCTOR, who worked at the Bentong Prison, was murdered and decapitated by his Bangladeshi gardener on Wednesday night. Pahang CID chief SAC T. Narenasegaran said the victim, Dr Harjit Singh, 61, who was the brother-in-law of Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh, was killed about 8pm. The suspect, who has been working with the victim as a gardener for the past three years, later surrendered to the police at 11.40pm the same night. Investigations revealed the victim was resting on an easy chair in the porch of his house near the garden, about 50m from the main road in Kampung Sertik near Bentong, Pahang, when he was attacked from behind. Police found a parang, believed to be the murder weapon used in the attack, nearby.

for the RM3 million project. The tender advertisement was published in UK dailies on Aug 10, came after the ministry was criticised for purportedly awarding the contract to Londonbased designer, James Wong. This is because Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen was reported as saying on June 6 that Malaysian -born Wong will be designing the Malaysian exhibit at the 2012 edition of the flower show after having won gold medals at this year and last year's events. The ministry's sincerity in coming up with the tender exercise at this stage comes into question as the tenders closed at noon on Aug 17 — a day before the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which organises the Chelsea Flower Show, requires the stand design to be submitted. Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Donald Lim was also coy when asked to comment. “Every ministry has to follow their own guidelines and those involved in the tender process will know the procedures well

since they have done this for many years. It would be unfair for me to comment,” he said. Transparency International (Malaysia) president Paul Low said he believes in best practices and that the Treasury has its circulars on procurements for ministries to follow. “They have to comply with the standard procedures set by MOF,” he said. Tourism Malaysia acting director-general Datuk Azizan Noordin declined comment, diverting queries to the ministry's corporate communications division. “We cannot make any comment and interfere because the tender process is still ongoing. Once the process is complete can we release any statement,” said the division’s chief, Ritzeraynn Rashid. Ritzeraynn denied the tender closing a day before RHS submission deadline was going to be a problem. “Why should the designer complain? It is the panel that should be complaining but they are not complaining,” he said.

SEVERAL bus passengers ganged up and caught a man who had allegedly hugged and fondled a female college student in the bus near Sandakan, Sarawak, yesterday. The 35-year-old suspect, who did not have any identification document on him, has been remanded under Section 354 of the Penal Code, said Sandakan police deputy chief Supt Fadzil Mohd Ali. Earlier, the 20-year-old victim boarded the bus at the terminal in the town centre about 4pm to return to her home in Kampung GumGum. The man, who was sitting next to her, started a conversation but suddenly began to hug and fondle her. The girl then screamed, alerting several passengers nearby who immediately apprehended the suspect. The bus then drove to Batu 4 police station and the suspect was handed over to the police.

THE Tourism Ministry must adhere to all procurement procedures set by the government in its tender process. This includes giving a reasonable time frame for submission of tender documents. However, Auditor-General (AG) Tan Sri Ambrin Buang said while the Tourism Ministry may have its “own procedures”, generally the rule of thumb is that all ministries and agencies must follow treasury circulars. “All government bodies, including the Tourism Ministry, must follow circulars on procurement by the treasury which contains the procedures, but Tourism Malaysia may have its own tender procedures,” he said, when contacted yesterday. However, he stopped short of saying there was a breach in procedures by Tourism Malaysia. Treasury circulars dictate that tenders need to be submitted, usually within 60 to 90 days. Ambrin was commenting on The Malay Mail’s front cover report yesterday on Tourism Ministry’s open tender for the Show Garden Designer for next year's Chelsea Flower Show, where bidders were only given seven days to submit their bids

Unwavering fortitude Converts to Islam take fasting in stride

By FAIZAL NOR IZHAM faizal.nor@mmail.com.my

FOR new converts to Islam, fasting can be a challenge both physically and mentally. But judging by the fairly new converts The Malay Mail recently met at the Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Perkim) in Jalan Ipoh, they have become accustomed to fasting throughout Ramadan. Wani Saleha Abdullah (pic), 35, embraced Islam shortly after arriving in Sabah in February 2009 and works as a part-time maid. "My very first day of fasting two years ago was very difficult

and I was only able to fast for the first week before giving up," said Wani, who lives with her Sabahan husband, a soldier, and

his son from a previous marriage, in Ampang. "Last year, I managed to fast continuously for the first two weeks and for this year, I believe I can fast the entire month of Ramadan." Wani, formerly known as Bhebyina Kibad, comes from the Philippines and was originally a Christian. "This being my third year of fasting, I have grown used to waking up early in the morning for sahur (meal consumed before fasting)," she said. Muhd Danial Abdullah, 19, is a Malaysian Chinese who converted from Buddhism to Islam in August 2009.

"When I was in Form Four and not yet a Muslim, I stayed at the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department hostel in Jalan Ipoh and learnt to fast with my Muslim friends there although not throughout Ramadan," said Muhd Daniel who hails from Johor and was formerly known as Ho Ken Kim. "So by the time I converted, fasting came naturally to me." After completing his secondary schooling, Muhd Daniel worked as a security guard for a time but is now looking for another job. Nor Sakinah Carlos Abdullah, 46, was born Gloria Carlos in the Philippines. She came to Malaysia in December 2003 and now works

as a part-time maid. "My Filipina aunt is Muslim and had provided me guidance when I embraced Islam in December 2006," said Nor Sakinah who shares a house in Kepong with an Indonesian and another Filipina, both also Muslims. "The first time I started fasting during Ramadan in 2007, my body would tremble from hunger and I got tired easily, but the religious teachers at Perkim advised me to be patient and to tough it out. I am now used to fasting and look forward to Ramadan every year as fasting teaches us discipline. For Raya this year, I will be celebrating with my friends at Perkim."

RM100 reward for whistleblowing on loan shark advertisers

IF you have information on anyone who pastes ‘Ah Long’ stickers on walls or road signages, you stand to get a RM100 reward. Pe t a l i n g Ja y a d i s t r i c t Commercial Crime Investigation chief, DSP Mazelan Paijan said the reward would only be given when the culprit has been successfully prosecuted. have not deterred from declaring war on the menace. “This is an ongoing operation and we are doing it extensively. Just look at the nuisance it poses to the public, pasting ads everywhere including road signages, mailboxes and public facilities," said Mazelan. Since the operation was launched early this month, more than 70 'Ah Long' banners and stickers have been removed by police and the council’s enforcement officers.

In the period, police conducted operations in PJ and Kota Damansara. Sungai Way and Bandar Sunway are next on the list. “Some people are cynical of our efforts saying it is pointless to tear the ads down when they'll reappear in no time. But we will not use this as an excuse to ignore the situation." This month alone, police have checked nine money lenders and discovered two were operating with expired business licences. Mazelan acknowledged police do not have the jurisdiction to

I was conscious the whole time until I was wheeled into the emergency unit," said Wini. Doctors later told her she was lucky the knife did not hit any vital organs. One of the four stabs hit the ribcage, which left her in excruciating pain. Reflecting on her ordeal, she said she was still reeling from the incident. "I am just traumatised. I feel lucky to be alive as this man obviously had no mercy at all." Wini's husband, Suhaimi Mahmood, 44, had rushed to the hospital from home

upon learning about his wife's ordeal. "I am stunned this happened in a cafe in full view of the public. You hear about snatch thieves, but nothing like this. I hope this man will be caught soon." The couple have a boy, 10, and two girls aged five and six. In her bag were personal documents, cash and credit cards. Her friend subsequently lodged a police report at the Taman Dagang police station. Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin said no arrests have been made so far. “We will interview the victim in a few days after she recovers to get a detailed description of the perpetrator." Girl's wish for Raya dress dashed forever

THE CCTV camera at the cafe where Wini Roswita Abdullah was attacked was faulty during the incident. A café staff who witnessed the incident revealed this to The Malay Mail. At the time, the staff was in the midst of closing for business. They only realised something amiss when they heard customers screaming from the outdoor seating area. “All I saw was a customer sprawled on the ground with blood everywhere and I saw two motorcycles riding off,” said one staff. None of them managed to see the attacker's face. A manager at the outlet told this reporter the CCTV system had temporarily malfunctioned during the incident.

IN FRIENDSHIP: Mohamad Salleh hands paper bags of police contacts to business operators

KL police chief's Ramadan bazaar 'walkabout' CITY police chief DCP Datuk Mohamad Salleh walked the talk yesterday when, as promised, he took his men on a "walkabout" at Bazar Ramadan Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 2 in conjunction with the police's Balik Kampung Sempena Hari Raya 2011 crime prevention campaign. Police distributed pamphlets and flyers to the public and stall operators highlighting this annual campaign requiring families who travel outstation for the coming Raya holidays to inform them of their absence to enable police patrol their vacant homes. The public could also inform

police by sending an SMS to the RakanCop hotline, with details of their house address and the period they will be away. Accompanying Mohamad in the walkabout were KL Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah, Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Bari Wan Abdul Khalid and KL Narcotics CID chief ACP Kang Chez Chiang. Bazar Ramadan Taman Tun Dr Ismail was the third and final Ramadan bazaar walkabout by KL police, after Bazar Ramadan Taman Tasik Permaisuri in Jalan Yaacob Latif in Cheras on Aug 17 and Bazar Ramadan Jalan Kuching in Sentul on Monday.

The chief suspect then drove the victim to hospital and concocted a story to police that Mohd Rafie was attacked by a motorist after a slight fenderbender by the suspect and 'the other motorist' at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman where the victim and suspect had gone for pre-Raya shopping. Mohd R af ie's family

expressed shock to The Malay Mail when they found out his friend was the main suspect. However, Mohd Rafie's family were unaware of what transpired between the two. KUALA LUMPUR: Inter-school brawl

Remanded student suspects released for exams THE three students under police remand for their involvement in an 'interschool' brawl here last week in which 40 students from three city schools were involved, have been released to sit for their upcoming examinations. KL Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said once the exams are over, the three suspects will be required to attend an identification parade before the four victims who were seriously injured. "We released the three suspects so they, along with the four victims as well as other suspects, who are all aged between 15 to 17, could prepare for their Forms Three, Four and Five exams in midOctober and early November," Ku told The Malay Mail yesterday. In the Aug 16 incident, the four victims were leaving school in the afternoon when some 30 students from two other schools, armed with iron rods, batons and

helmets, attacked the four and six other students outside the school compound. The other six were not seriously injuried. Police arrived shortly after the incident and detained a suspect while the victims' school disciplinary teacher later made a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters before informing the victims' parents. The incident led to a revenge assault by a schoolmate of one of the victims, on the same night. However, the revenge attack among students from the three schools involved did not take place as police defused the fight upon a tip-off. The victim's schoolmate, unhappy his friend was assaulted, got two outsiders to confront the attackers at a playground in Taman Melawati. The administrators of all three schools believed the attack could have been personal in nature after interviewing the respective stu-

dents involved in the brawl. However, police are yet to established the motive behind the fracas. Of the four seriously injured, one suffered head injuries that required three stitches, another fractured his right hand while two others incurred bodily injuries. A senior assistant of a school where the victims were bashed up outside the school compound, had said the school administrators spoke to students during their school assembly and managed to get some of them with information to come forward to facilitate police investigations. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Puad Zarkashi said he directed the three schools involved to discuss an action plan and to find out what transpired. He also advised the three schools to request police patrols for the time being to monitor students until the matter is satisfactorily resolved.

Africans held for murder of Japanese merchant

THREE male Africans, believed to be involved in a fatal jewellery deal that turned sour, have been detained. They are prime suspects behind the robbery and murder of a Japanese merchant at a four-star hotel room in Jalan Ampang on Monday. The three suspects were picked up by police on Tuesday at two different locations in Kuala Lumpur. A police source revealed they also recovered RM100,000 from the suspects. Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah confirmed the arrests. In the incident, one of the two Japanese merchants, bound-and-gagged, was found dead in the room at 12.30pm on Monday. His compatriot was similarly tied up but survived, sustaining minor injuries to his mouth and hands. An autopsy revealed the dead merchant, who had a heart condition, died due to head trauma caused by a blunt object. Police believe the victim and his injured friend, both in their 50s, along with a third Japanese man, negotiated a jewellery deal on Sunday with three African nationals in their hotel room. Apparently, the deal went wrong and the three Africans and the third Japanese left the room and the hotel. It is believed the Africans returned to meet the two Japanese just before or just after midnight on Sunday. The Africans knocked on the door and when it was opened, they stormed in and ferociously attacked the two Japanese, and then bound and gagged them. Both victims were apparently unconscious as the suspects ransacked the room, and took the merchants' belongings, including jewellery, cash and business papers.

The judiciary's renaissance man

THE country's outgoing Chief Justice (CJ) Tun Zaki Azmi is one man who will admit that he is not prone to making mistakes. In an interview with The Malay Mail on Monday, Zaki revealed his fears when asked to take on the job by (then) Prime Minister Datuk Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. "I gave reasons why I should not be appointed as CJ," Zaki shared in the candid interview at his office at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya. He said he feared that "old stories" with regards to his private life as well as his link to the ruling party would not make him the ideal candidate when Abdullah approached him for the job in mid-2007. It would even give critics fodder against him and those who appointed him. Furthermore, if he were to say "Yes", Zaki would be an outsider, directly appointed into the Federal Court — the nation's first. But as Zaki said: "If the Prime Minister comes down to your level and asks you to do something, how do you say 'No'?" And so the Umno lawyer and Disciplinary Board member entered the record books on Sept 5, 2007, following his direct appointment as a Federal Court judge. Following which he was elevated to President of the Court of Appeal three months later and then Chief Justice on Oct 21, 2008. When I interviewed Abdullah before Zaki's appointment in 2007, Pak Lah opined that he felt Zaki (despite the so-called "baggage") was a good candi-

ENDURING LEGACY: Some may not agree with Zaki's (left) changes to the judiciary, but others opine that he has revolutionised the Malaysian legal system. He is seen here speaking to 'The Malay Mail' executive editor Terence Fernandez in a recent interview in Putrajaya — Pic: Samsul Said

date as he was not from within the system. Hence, he said Zaki would bring fresh approaches to the judiciary, long seen as archaic and out of touch with the masses. There was also a matter of trust that was a consideration for the then premier. This included having someone he could rely on to help push through his reforms to gain back public confidence and respect for the administration and especially the judiciary. Zaki did not want to draw parallels to the judiciary, post and pre-1988 (the year of the infamous siege on the judiciary by the executive) in terms of whether the institution had re-

gained some semblance of confidence from the people. He was also conscious of the fact that his appointment further exacerbated some of the loud criticisms on the government, the ruling party and the judiciary. "I made it a point not to hear any political case, but, of course, people can say by virtue of my position as CJ, I can influence," he sighed. Zaki may have managed to silence some critics, following certain judicial decisions which were not in favour of the ruling coalition but the verdict is still out on whether he has been able to gain mass confidence. His fast-tracking of cases,

computerising case filings to reduce corruption in the court offices, unprecedented appointment of members of the Bar to the Bench and the setting up of new civil courts are among the steps he has taken to make the system work better for both counsel and clients. The notorious delay tactics of parties have also been reduced as cases are heard faster and even thrown out or given judgment in default if parties abuse the court's time. Zaki's experience as a lawyer lent itself a sense of empathy to those who deal with the courts everyday. He brought with him his years of experience being on the other side, where he had even made a controversial remark about having to "bribe" court officers to expedite his firm's cases. But whether cutting red tape, making judges more accountable for their actions and decisions may be seen as taking the judiciary into uncharted waters

of accountability, to the public at large, it must also mean ensuring justice is served. Several contentious issues were brought before the courts, such as that of S. Shamala who was fighting for custody of her two children who had been taken by her Muslim-convert husband. Many felt the court had missed a great opportunity to once and for all settle the prickly issues surrounding the jurisdiction of the Civil and Syariah courts. Zaki was quick to point out that there was a contempt proceeding against Shamala who had by then fled to Australia with her children. Here he emphasised that even the court's hands were tied: "The court can only decide on what is put before it!" The debate on whether he was one of the better CJs we have had will rage on long after Zaki's retirement on Sept 12. But what one cannot deny is

the unprecedented access Zaki had given to the public at large and what he has done for the judicial system. There are two sides to a coin and as much as he has gained plaudits for his efforts, he has also failed to convert some critics who prefer to deal with his past and focus on his political links. By his own admission, Zaki is not perfect and will have to answer for some of his decisions and actions made before and during his tenure. Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria, a career judge who is poised to take over, may want to review some of these efforts. This includes the fast-tracking which some lawyers say is a victim of its own success as cases are moved up for hearing even though parties are not prepared. But Zaki is confident that his successor will continue his efforts. As he says, being an "outsider", he felt he had a lot to prove to his brother judges. But the feedback I received from Zaki's contemporaries in the Federal Court, including Arifin, Tan Sri Raus Sharif, Tan Sri James Foong, Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin and Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong, is that he has revolutionised the judiciary. If they feel that Zaki is a tough act to follow, then surely, he must have done some things right and the judiciary is better for it. THE Chief Justice's full interview with The Malay Mail will be published the following week. Feedback: terence@mmail.com.my

SUBANG JAYA: MPSJ FULL-BOARD MEETING

Campaign success Programme to recycle cooking oil reaps rewards

By FAIZAL NOR IZHAM faizal.nor@mmail.com.my

THE campaign to encourage proper disposal of used cooking oil among Subang Jaya folk has reaped significant rewards since it was introduced two years ago. This was revealed by Subang Jaya Municipal Council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi after the council's full-board meeting at its headquarters yesterday. "For the first half of this year, we collected 14,810kg of used cooking oil. For the whole of last year, about 85,850kg was collected during the campaign," he said. Asmawi said the campaign received encouraging response with participation of about 120 eateries and restaurants under the council's jurisdiction. This year, the council also extended the programme to 12 Ramadan bazaars in the district which included USJ 4, USJ 7, SS 18, Bandar Kinrara,

Jalan Merbuk, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Puchong Perdana, Taman Wawasan, Puchong Prima, P u c h ong Ut am a , P u n c a k Jalil, Taman Equine and Seri Serdang. "We have collected 50kg of used cooking oil from the bazaars via distribution of barrels for oil collection carried out since Aug 1. Friday is the last day of the campaign for the bazaars," he said. The "Used Cooking Oil

Recycling Programme", organised by the council and CGV Industries Sdn Bhd was first launched in November 2009 with the objective of collecting used cooking oil to be processed into biodiesel and also to prevent contamination and clogging of public drains. Those taking part in the programme were given free collection barrels and incentives for each kilogramme of used cooking oil collected.

The c amp aig n, w hich began on July 1, allows the public to settle their outstanding compounds with a minimum offer of RM10 per compound.

Council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi urged the public to take advantage of this extension before action is taken against them. "The actions intended

include tracking and towing vehicles with outstanding compounds, bringing traffic offenders to court within two months of the case filing, arrest warrants

for traffic offenders who fail to attend their court hearing and sending a list of vehicle numbers to the Road Transport Department for blacklisting," he said.

Lodge objections on telco tower project RESIDENTS unhappy with the proposed construction of a telecommunications tower in Jalan Puteri 12/3, Bandar Puteri, Puchong, are encouraged to voice their grouses with the Subang Jaya Municipal Council. Its president, Datuk Asmawi Kasbi, said the council is open to complaints regarding the proposed telecommunications tower. "We will entertain all objections lodged, as long as they address specific technical issues," he said. The tower, to be built by Asiaspace Sdn Bhd on top of a Syabas water tank, is a Selangor government project to prepare for a new cellular telecommunications system. The

two-year lease agreement between the company and the State government runs from Oct 15, 2010, to Oct 14, 2012. The application for the construction was presented by the company to the Selangor Web Consortium, which acted as the Local Central Agency for applications to build telecommunications structures in the State. Asmawi said existing guidelines do not stipulate the applicant must obtain permission from local authorities. However, he said the applicant must comply with the minimum safe distance between the tower structure and residential areas, which is 20 metres.

The distance of the proposed site and nearby residential areas is 27 metres. "If residents object to the effects of radiation emitted by the telecommunications tower, they could obtain a report of a study conducted by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency and Health Ministry which concludes radiation from the structure does not endanger public health," said Asmawi. "The study indicates radiation produced by such transmitters is within the same spectrum of electromagnetic waves from home electronic equipment such as televisions and microwave ovens."

A s m aw i a d d e d c o m pounds not paid after Jan 10 will be charged the maximum rate of RM80 and no further appeal will be entertained.

Online submissions

TO speed up the approval process and create a more transparent system for all, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council's "One Stop Centres" went online on Aug 12. The council was one of five municipal councils chosen for the second phase launch of the initiative. The others are the Klang, Ampang Jaya, Selayang and Kajang Municipal Councils. Through this system, council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi said applications need not go through counters but can be done anywhere, anytime. "The online system also saves paper submissions for building, engineering or landscape plans."

Where are the tow trucks? Council says action taken against illegal parking in Pusat Bandar Taman Melawati but residents unconvinced

INDISCRIMINATE parking in Pusat Bandar Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, is causing inconvenience to the residents of Jalan Bandar Melawati, says MUHAMMAD HELMY KAMBALI. He says there is hardly any enforcement by the authorities. "Jalan Bandar Melawati is busiest during the day with vehicles queuing up at the junction that leads to the Middle Ring Road II highway. "With inconsiderate drivers parking their vehicles anywhere they like, especially around the food court, congestion is all-day now." MUHAMMAD HELMY says he has been complaining to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council on the indiscriminate parking for the past five years but no action has been taken. "There are plenty of parking bays around the food stalls.

daily AFFAIR: Indiscriminate parking, leading to congestion, happens all the time in Pusat Bandar Taman Melawati, say residents

It's just that people are too lazy to walk, even for a short distance, and they take the easy way out by parking right in front of the food court," he says. MUHAMMAD HELMY hopes the council can solve the problem.

● THE Ampang Jaya Municipal Council says action and monitoring have been carried out since early this year. "Our enforcement officers, together with personnel from the council's parking operator, Suasa

Efektif Sdn Bhd, are issuing 150 to 250 summonses a day around Pusat Bandar Taman Melawati," says a council spokesman. The spokesman says the council will not hesitate to take stern action against errant vehicle owners, in-

cluding towing away their vehicles. "We will send our tow trucks to curb the illegal parking menace." When contacted, MUHAMMAD HELMY refutes the council's response. He says he did not see

anything being done when he visited the food stalls to break fast recently. "Nothing has been done. I always drive around this area to send and pick up my daughter from school in the afternoon and evening. And I have never come across any enforcement officers or tow trucks doing their rounds." The Hotline roving team visited the commercial area along Jalan Bandar 3 during rush hour and observed several vehicles parked haphazardly by the roadside. No enforcement officers were seen, only a bumperto-bumper crawl as long as one kilometre. The congestion appeared to have been caused by indiscriminate parking near the food court and the main junction between Jalan Bandar Melawati and Jalan Taman Melawati.

Asked to pay despite waiver NURFAINIE IRDINA GANI, of Banting, Selangor, is shocked she still has to pay her Internet bill even though she had terminated her account and Celcom Axiata Berhad had offered to waive the amount due. he was reluctant to do so." NURFAINIE is upset over the latest development. ● CELCOM Axiata Berhad clarifies that there was initially an outstanding payment. "This resulted in an automated follow-up by the debt collector," says a

spokesman. "Before the customer's complaint, we had informed her on July 6 her bill was only partially waived by RM103.75 and, as previously agreed, the customer agreed to pay the remaining RM220.65 within 14 days from July 26." The spokesman says they

have addressed NURFAINIE's concerns to the debt collection agency and they will look into the matter. "We apologise for the inconvenience caused and we thank the customer for highlighting the matter," says the spokesman. The company now considers this case closed.

KL: Players leaving BAM a bane for badminton: Ahmad Shabery (Aug 23)

New talents needed

SO many players are leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) these days and things will be more difficult if this continues. We don't need these dramas and theatricals at a time when the country is in dire need of new talents. Malaysia can't forever be depending on Datuk Lee Chong Wei for its badminton titles. Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek will have a tough job ahead of him to look for the solution, and fast. Who will fill Chong Wei's

shoes? Are we nurturing enough world-class talents? If we do, are they good enough? These are among the more important questions the ministry and BAM should look into instead of quarelling among themselves and later leading to players leaving the association. I don't think the players would pack up and leave if BAM is doing its job properly. Something must be wrong somewhere within the association or the way it is being managed.

Not to sound too attached to the past, we once had a lot of top badminton players commanding worldwide respect. Why can't we have another Datuk Punch Gunalan, for instance, who was able to beat all odds despite not receiving much aid from the government but was still able to produce results? I remember a saying that goes, "In an ever-changing world, those who chose to stay put are actually moving backwards". Because of this tidak apa attitude we have, Malaysia is

left behind. Before, we only had Indonesia to worry about but now China, which has risen to "stardom" since the 1980s, is the team to beat. But from the looks of things, China is not going to make it easy for Malaysia, or any country for that matter, to beat them in the game. China will continue to be a badminton powerhouse for a long time. To move forward, BAM needs to learn f rom its Chinese counterparts and double its effort if we want to see Malaysia on top again. Mokhtar

More will leave if 'drama' continues LOOKING at the current drama surrounding the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), it appears BAM has outlived its unusefulness. If this continues, I think more players will leave the

association. I am baffled there are still statements saying it is expensive to send our athletes for overseas training and development. If we want to grow in sports, we should be willing to give our

KL: Splasher victim a ‘soft’ target (Aug 23)

No one deserves such fate I EXTEND my sympathy to acid splasher victim Mohd Rafie Abdul Latif (pic) and hope he is in good health. I also agree with his brother who said whatever his brother's sexuality might be, he did not deserve to suffer this fate. Society should not judge Mohd Rafie by his sexuality. What was going through the mind of the acid splasher when he committed the act? Didn't he think of the consequences of his action? Is he satisfied with what he has done? My prayers are with Mohd Rafie. Aini

Victim needs support of family and friends AS a result of a heinous act, acid splasher victim Mohd Rafie's face and life are scarred all in the name of "love and jealousy". I wish Mohd Rafie will be able to get the best surgeon to help him restore his face and also seek help to overcome the psychological trauma he might be undergoing now. All this, I know, is much easier said than done and his struggle will require the sup-

port of everyone around him. His family and friends will have to stick with him through thick and thin. Moreover, he will have to learn to trust again. People should not judge him because of his sexual preference but instead pray for his quick recovery. My prayers are with you and your family. Be strong. PrincessPJ

all. If the investment is sound, cost should not be a problem at all. Now that Malaysia, in a way, "owns" the English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers, the Youth and Sports

Ministry is saying as if it wants some kind of a backstage pass for its players to be trained at QPR facilities. What is happening here? Saw

Many unaccomplished missions

MANY of the missions the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) set out to achieve are not materialising. Among them are: ● To have a pool of world-class players. ● To lift the standard of women players to the same level as that of China and Korea. ● To have a bigger pool of back-up players for the men's and women's teams. ● To ensure consistent success in the international arena. ● To develop a pool of qualified international technical officials. ● To implement development programmes from grassroot to national level. ● To own fully-integrated training centres at both national and state level. ● To make badminton the sport of the country The main reasons for the "failure" is the whole management team is not focused. Many lack zeal,

commitment, ingenuity and ideas. There is no cooperation among the members of the management team. There must be a concerted effort to achieve any target, not just by having talks, rhetoric and meetings. We should have people who can commit full-time to undertake the responsibilities. In fact, the whole BAM set-up must be reshuffled and we don't need politicians heading the association. We need someone who can do the job. At the same time, the players' wellbeing must also be secure until they retire. There is no point of being praised, rewarded and paraded when the players are left on their own and neglected when they are old and unable to play anymore. Nawawi

KL: Proton-Perodua merger next? (Aug 10)

How about a foreign partner? STILL hot on the Malaysia Airlines-AirAsia share swap deal, many are talking about a possible merger between Pe r u s a h a an O tomobi l Kedua (Perodua) Sdn Bhd and Proton Holdings Bhd. As a national car user, I would prefer the idea of a merger be scrapped. I have to ag re e w it h Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh when he said the swap deal between the two local aviation companies cannot be compared to automakers as

their business modules are different. Since the car business is a numbers game, I would prefer both car companies collaborate in other matters such as marketing — especially overseas which we are still lagging behind — and parts sharing. At the same time, both companies are totally different in terms of business background, ownership and culture. It would take a lot of effort to restructure and reeducate the human capital and machineries just

to ensure the "marriage" between the two incompatible companies can work. Furthermore, a little competition between the two companies would be beneficial to the consumers. It will keep them on their to es and work hard to improve the quality of their products. On the contrary, a merger with a foreign car company would be good for Proton as it needs to make its presence known in the already saturated market, more so with China joining the fray.

China, with its vast population, market potentials and abilities, will undoubtedly in the near future become a force in car manufacturing. I did not mention Perodua here because it already has partners — Daihatsu and Toyota. To stay relevant in the future, Proton will need a foreign partner or else it will become a jaguh kampung, which we don't want. Mohd Ahmad

PJ: Saving energy

Temperature control timely move

THE recent announcement to implement immediate temperature control limits on air-conditioning in government facilities is a great step towards achieving the COP 15 commitment for Malaysia to reduce its carbon intensity by 40 per cent from the 2005 levels by 2020. This decision is timely and commendable and shows that Malaysia is “walking the talk” on managing its carbon

footprint. While the legislation for EE (energy efficiency) may not be enacted before 2013, there is no reason not to “advise” all electricity users to follow suit immediately. I believe electricity users will be happy to do so as the tariffs are expected to rise periodically, and such energy saving measures would help them reduce their energy costs, without sacrificing the

customers' comfort. Energy saving in air-conditioned premises can be further enhanced by optimally insulating them, especially as mineral wool insulation is locally manufactured. In fact, roof insulation can also reduce heat stress in premises where the need for air-conditioning is high by reducing the heat gain through the roofs, and thus eliminating the need for

artificial cooling such as airconditioning. The government has shown its intent to honour the COP 15 commitment. It is thus also time for all Malaysians to follow suit and make this Earth a better place for our future generations, reducing the cost of energy used and to counter the effects of climate change. 'Sick with power' Gaddafi could still unleash 'catastrophic event'

LIBYA'S new masters offered a million-dollar bounty for the fugitive Muammar Gaddafi, after he urged his men to fight on in battles across parts of the capital. A day after rebel forces overran his Tripoli headquarters and trashed symbols of his 42-year rule, scattered pockets of loyalist diehards kept the irregular fighters at bay as they hunted Gaddafi and his sons. Rebels also reported fighting deep in the desert and a standoff round Gaddafi's tribal home town. In Tripoli, rockets and shooting kept two million civilians indoors and gunfire rang out in the centre just before midnight yesterday. "Gaddafi's forces and his accomplices will not stop resisting until Gaddafi is caught or killed," said Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the rebels'

National Council. "The end will only come when he's captured, dead or alive," Abdel Jalil said in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi. Until then, he said, Gaddafi would not give up easily and could still unleash a "catastrophic event". In a poorquality audio tape broadcast by satellite overnight, Gaddafi, 69, urged Libya's tribes to "exterminate traitors, infidels and rats". There was no clear indication of where Gaddafi is, though his opponents surmised he was still in or around Tripoli after what Gaddafi himself described as a "tactical" withdrawal from his Bab al-Aziziya compound before it was captured on Tuesday. But Western leaders and the rebel government-in-waiting

lost no time readying a handover of Libya's substantial foreign assets. Funds will be required to bring relief to war-battered towns and to develop oil reserves that can make Libya rich. Washington was to submit a UN resolution to release an immediate US$1.5 billion (RM4.5b) for humanitarian aid. More will follow. While Libya is rich in oil, four decades of rule by personality cult has left it with few institutions of normal governance. Abdel Salam Jalloud, a close ally who switched sides last week, said Gaddafi planned to drop out of sight and then launch a guerilla war: "He is sick with power," he said. "He believes he can gather his supporters and carry out attacks. He is delusional. He thinks he can return to power." — AFP

China to have modern military force by 2020

CHINA appears on track to build a modern, regionallyfocused military by 2020, but often-touted advances like its stealth fighter jet are years away from being operational, the Pentagon said yesterday. The Defence Department's

annual assessment of the Chinese military also flagged Beijing's growing military edge over Taiwan and cyber attacks last year, including on US government computers, that seem to have originated in China. China launched its first

aircraft carrier for a maiden run earlier this month, a refitted former Soviet craft. A US official, briefing reporters at the Pentagon, said he believed Beijing was working toward building its own domesticallyproduced aircraft carrier.

The report said any domestically produced aircraft carrier would not be operational until at least 2015, if construction were to start this year. Michael Schiffer, a deputy assistant secretary of defence, told Pentagon reporters:

The major social networks are expected to offer no concessions when they meet the home secretary, Theresa May, at a Home Office summit today, reports The Guardian. Ministers are expected to row back on David Cameron's call for suspected rioters to be banned from social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook, following the riots and looting across England a fortnight ago. The home secretary will explore what measures the major social networks could take to help contain disorder – including how law enforce-

ment can more effectively use the sites – rather than discuss powers to shut them down. The technology companies will strongly warn the government against introducing emergency measures that could usher in a new form of online censorship. Attacks on London landmarks, including the Olympics site and Westfield shopping centres, were thwarted earlier this month after police managed to intercept private BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) posts, suggesting leaving networks running can provide a valuable source of intelligence and information. Twitter and Facebook are expected to outline the steps that both social networks already take to remove messages that potentially incite violence. Facebook, which has

Revamped to combat Google+ threat FACEBOOK launched a significant privacy-led revamp yesterday of the social networking site in a move that's being interpreted as a direct response to the threat posed by Google+. The site said the changes, designed to make it easier for users to control what personal details are revealed on the site and to whom, would be rolled out to users "in the coming days". Rectifying a major privacy flaw, Facebook users can now approve photos they are tagged in before they appear on their profile, The Age reports. The main change revolves around bringing privacy controls out from the cover of the settings pages and placing them next to the posts, photos and tags they affect. Almost all content on your profile will have an icon and a drop-down menu next to it allowing you to manage who can see each specific piece of content. H o w e v e r, F a c e b o o k spokeswoman Meredith Chin denied the changes were a response to Google+. "We've been working on these changes for a really long time," she said.

Woman strips naked at airport Customs A WOMAN told by Customs officers she would be searched helped them far more than they expected. Loukai Phillips, 36, stripped naked in front of the Customs officers in the middle of Bermuda's LF Wade International Airport's busy arrivals hall. "If you want to see me naked, you can do it right ******* here," Phillips declared as she stripped naked in front of passengers, including children. Her lawyer told the court his client "took her clothes off out of frustration", describing the move as "an impetuous decision", The Royal Gazette reported. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told her: “The Bermuda Customs have got a job to do and one of those is to search you in accordance with the law," before handing her a 12-month conditional discharge. “If you don’t want to be searched, don’t come through Customs,” he told her.

Surgery catfight

Aussie pageant queen denies making back-biting comment on Hawkins MISS UNIVERSE Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs (left) has denied saying Jennifer Hawkins (right) had surgery and is trying to contact the latter's management over the issue. The Perth model ignited fierce debate last weekend over whether Hawkins, one of the nation's highest-paid models and winner of the 2004 Miss Universe crown, had surgery. Biggs, who is in Brazil for the Miss Universe final in Sao Paulo on Sept 12, had said the Aussie supermodel went "that little bit too far" with cosmetic work, perthnow reports. But the 20-year-old apologised to Hawkins on her Twitter page yesterday, claiming her words were "taken completely out of context". "I just wanted to apologise to Jen Hawkins about today's article," she wrote. "I never said that about her... and words were put in my mouth. I think Jen's an amazing, beautiful woman and I look up to her. (I) hope no one thinks I really think these things of her. Feeling very awful at the moment! "Jen is a very inspirational woman to me and I would never bring her down like that. I feel horrible .... and am currently trying to get in contact with her management." Hawkins has repeatedly denied having plastic surgery since winning the title as a fresh-faced cheerleader in 2004 and has attributed her appearance to a healthy diet and exercise. Former Miss Universe Australia Rachael Finch weighed in to the debate today, saying she preferred Biggs' real beauty to how Hawkins' face had "changed". "I'm not completely against plastic surgery. I think everyone makes their own personal decision but I do believe Sherri-Lee is right when she says that natural beauty is best," Finch told the Austereo radio group. Finch added she was "not sure" if Hawkins had surgical enhancements. "She denied it, so maybe she hasn't but I love what she looks like in a picture in 2004. "Whether it might be weight loss or changes in the face in maturity, whatever it is, it looks so beautiful and fresh in 2004." Hawkins' management yesterday refused to deny the former Miss Universe had gone under the knife.

"She comes to Springfield to try to cheer up Lisa, but she can't," she added. Lisa Goes Gaga is due to air in the US as part of the show's 23rd season, which launches on Sept 25.

Paramore laugh off 'girly' comparisons

Winehouse sets UK sales milestone

PARAMORE "laugh" about comparisons between them and Avril Lavigne. The band's guitarist Taylor York said the group, fronted by Hayley Williams, used to put up a fight when people spoke about them in the same light as female singers such as Kelly Clarkson, but now they just laugh off the comparisons. He said: "Since we have a girl singer, we get compared to Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. We'll always get compared to any girl-fronted band. "We used to try to fight it and be like, 'No, we're different'. Now we just laugh about it because people are always going to compare us to people we don't think we sound like." The 21-year-old musician says the group, which includes bassist Jeremy Davis, but who lost two members Josh and Zac Farro when in December, are in "a better place" than ever before. He added to watchmojo.com: "We're in a better place than we've ever been. We're fortunate to have come out where we are and thankful our fans have been supportive through that. We have no intentions of stopping."

A SURGE in interest in the music of Amy Winehouse following her death has seen her final release become the biggest selling album of the century in Britain, figures showed yesterday. Winehouse's 2006 album Back To Black has now sold 3,259,100 copies, edging ahead of the previous record holder by James Blunt, according to the Official Chart Company. Blunt's 2005 album Back To Bedlam has sold 3,241,118 copies. It was announced yesterday music legend Tony Bennett will lead a tribute to Winehouse at an international MTV awards event in Los Angeles on Sunday. — AFP

ACTRESS Denise Richards, who recently said she would never rekindle her romance with ex-husband Charlie Sheen, would still have married the troubled actor if she had to do it all over again. "He gave me the two greatest gifts (in) our daughters! I believe people come into our lives and we learn different things. I honestly believe he has been one of my greatest teachers as far as life lessons. As painful as it all was, I would do it all again because I have amazing children," contactmusic.com quoted the 40-year-old as saying. Richards and Sheen, who have two daughters, Lola, six, and Sammy, seven, ended their marriage in 2006.

Sharing your past

Sandee Chew

WE all keep secrets, sometimes even from ourselves. The six tales revealed in A Darker Shade of Red examine the nature of the human heart and may even remind you of a secret of your own. Presented at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) from now to Sunday, the play draws on the lengths we go to on a ‘maybe’ and the strange moment in love when violence seems perfectly reasonable. Looking through a variety of lenses, the stories cross over from a saloon, a cramped confessional in a dusty abbey, to the distant future where life evolves in the darkness of space and in the locked confines of a man’s past. “We all carry with us struggles and histories that essentially make us unique and who we are. How we

By anu venugopal anu@mmail.com.my grow as human beings depend on how we deal with those difficult struggles and histories,” said Sandee Chew, one of the actors in the play. Enough, by Jude Jame, explores the myth that we are told as children, of a magical kingdom where everyone is happy; where one meets prince or princess charming and everything is hunky dory. Life is not a fairytale and neither is this story. “I was particularly drawn to Enough because the elegant simplicity of the dialogue hides a complicated undercurrent of

emotions and history that I was eager to explore and tackle as an actor. Though the Wanderer is a busier script, I play another character with history but completely no lines,” said Sandee. While in The Story of the Wanderer by Calvin Wong, the story is set in a post-apocalyptic town of Oakley, the last bastion of civilisation in the new west. Oakley has no law, one tree, a little water and is about to receive a mile of trouble. “The other plays also have similar balancing of outward and inward challenges. All the plays are about characters that have a past and are trying to grapple with something they have just discovered. Yet the setting and style of each play are very different from the other,” said Sandee, who was also in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Kaki Blue and Serangan Zombi Pertama di Malaysia. In Confessional, in times of need some turn to faith, hope and charity for others, to gain something 'happier'. A man plays Battleship with his psychotherapist, and in be-

Natalie Heng tween the hits and misses, the past emerges in layers in Games We Play. Something is strangely familiar at The Kopitiam on Jalan Sehala while a new, warlike civilisation is expanding into our space in The Git of Mercy. Directed by Marvin Wong (A Light in KL City, The Illusion), A Darker Shade of Red is a showcase of the up-and-coming in the local performing arts scene. A Darker Shade of Red is also the debut performance for five of the nine cast members, including Karanbir Hundal, Natalie Heng and Miho Yeap. The performance in the six

stories will see various theatrical styles being used across multiple genres. Despite its heavy subject matter, A Darker Shade of Red isn’t always melancholic despite its weighty subject matter. Even in the grim setting of a psychiatrist’s consultation room, a touch of dry wit punctuates the tragicomic moments that resonate all too easily with everyday life. Ticket prices are RM23 (adult) and RM18 (The Actors Studio card holders, students, disabled and for the preview). Call 03-40479000 or visit www. klpac.org for details.

By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my THERE'S a bittersweet moment, almost all too familiar in The Smurfs. Well, it isn’t just about six tiny blue creatures that are accidentally transported and end up lost in the concrete jungle that is New York City. The film is also about the human touch that is infused in it, via the involvement of a typical young NYC couple. Familiar because The Smurfs is pretty much like previous projects that utilised popular cartoon characters, particularly films like G Force and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Anyway, before blue becomes

A smurfing goo

the 'in' skin colour via James Cameron’s Avatar, children growing up in the 80s were already fascinated by the 'three-apple-high' blue-skinned creatures in white pants, who live in an enchanted forest — a creation of one Belgian cartoonist known as Peyo. Okay, it might be about the Smurfs getting their mini makeover on the big screen, while enjoying a little sight-seeing in the Big Apple. However, do expect a lot of funny one-liners and clichés, as well as worthy attempts at showing the fun side of 3D. The beginning of the film sees a promising take of the entire Smurfs’ village, but it all goes down to nothing the minute all the characters arrive in the big city.

It looks nothing out of the extraordinary. In fact, everything gets too soft to look at too. The movie should be good enough in 2D, and that extra D is when you decide to give it a try. Still, do try it at your own risk. The story is as simple as it can get. While Clumsy (Anton Yelchin) is out to retrieve one final ingredient for Papa Smurf’s magic potion, he accidentally stumbles upon the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and lets him into the enchanted village of the Smurfs. While the entire villagers are trying to save themselves, Clumsy falls into the Cave of Wonders, where a magi-

cal portal opens once every blue moon and transports him and his family into the modern New York City. The leader of the

pack, Papa Smurfs (Jonathan Winters), then attempts to bring them all back through the same channel but Gargamel threatens

gorgeous field spy Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) in a topsecret mission. Mater’s unintentional actionpacked journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan, Italy, France and England as his friendship with McQueen is tested. Unlike the first movie Cars, which revolved around McQueen becoming more grounded, Cars 2 sees Mater taking the spotlight. Just like Mr. Bean, Mater has a way of constantly being in difficult situations and giving others the opportunity to laugh at

him. An unlikely protagonist, one initially questions the need for Mater to become the main character, but as the story continues and his adventures intensify, it is clear that there is a message in this mix-up, that whatever or whoever you may be, you just have to 'Be Yourself'. To be fair, Mater sure does have a lot of personality. One can’t help but feel for the outof-place, 200 horsepower tow truck, who brings his country bumpkin innocence to big cities and becomes a laughing stock of classier cars.

Raja Gosnell, the director of The Smurfs, has the audiences’ attention by focusing on his six Smurfs — Papa Smurf, Grouchy (George Lopez), Brainy (Fred Armisen), Clumsy, Gusty (Alan Cumming) and Smurfette (Katy Perry) — who get sucked into a vortex of some sort while

he cleverly blends computergenerated-images and live action sequence. On the surface, there is little flaw — almost none on the movie’s special effect. Gosnell, who has his fair share of directing animated-live action films (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) has done quite well with The Smurfs. Gosnell is smart as he diverts the audience's attention through the non-stop action moments.

Along with the vivid international scenery and subtle jokes, the film gives away a positive experience, despite the absence of depth in its characters. Directed by John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Cars) the

film depicts the formula used by spy movies closely, in the form of cool gadgets, an annoying antagonist (Francesco Bernoulli) and close encounters. Still, there are a whole lot of colours and endearing moments in Cars 2, though not of the teary-eyed kind like Pixar’s previous hits Finding Nemo

Not so cool Conan

By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my

ONE wonders why director Marcus Nispel had to attempt to remake a classic film like Conan The Barbarian. Even if it is in 3D, there doesn’t seem to be a point in this new and ‘improved’ version of the legend. Most people are going to compare it to the 1982 version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Earl Jones, anyway. Brought to life by writer Robert E. Howard in 1932, the Cimmerian warrior thrived and evolved over eight decades in prose, graphics, cinema, television and games and has continued to be popular for his exploits in the Hyborian Age until today. Set in the pre-Christian age, the story revolves around protagonist Conan (Jason Momoa), who starts off his quest to avenge the murder of his father by the evil warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang). Zym is on a quest of his own, to put together an ancient mask and fill it with the said 'pure blood' so that he can resurrect

his wife and become a powerful god. As Conan encounters hulking rivals, horrible monsters and impossible odds, he unwittingly becomes the captor and protector of Tamara (Rachel Nichols) who is sought after by Zym and his witch daughter Marique (Rose McGowan) as they believe she has knowledge of a secret they desire to know. Conan also takes it upon himself to save the nations of Hyboria from invaders of the evil supernatural kind. Even as the voiceover starts at the beginning of the film, one senses a certain sense of doom (and not of the entertaining kind) with Conan The Barbarian. Young Conan goes about slaughtering and beheading his enemies in the first 10 minutes of the movie, all for the sake of impressing his father and earning a place among the warriors. This PG-18 rated movie is even more evident with several cuts from the censorship board throughout the movie. No doubt Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis) has

the looks to match the fierce personality of Conan The Barbarian. His sculptured body gives some eye candy to the audience and there are possibilities of him being an action star. Both Lang (Avatar) and Nichols (Alias) don’t have much screen time while McGowen (Nip Tuck), steals whatever limelight is left from Momoa, thanks to her crazy, witchy costume, complete with steel claws. While there is a whole lot of action in Conan The Barbarian, the characters are not developed enough. Even as the main character, the audience gets glimpses of his kind heart beneath his tough exterior. Monsters pop up here and there without much reason except for providing Conan more opportunities to slay. Zym’s power crazy wife is only briefly mentioned and Tamara is an object everyone seems to need. Conan The Barbarian is screening in cinemas today.

Humble start pays off for Hazama Personally, I prefer to launch individual singles before finally compiling it all into an album. This is the best way to make sure that all my material will be killers, with no fillers. — Hazama

FIVE years ago, he was rejected for a spot that should have rightfully been his. Now he calls the shots. Fast forward to the present, it’s obvious that as clichéd as it may sound, there is indeed a rhyme and reason to everything, as Hazama Mohd Azmi is now undeniably one of the more interesting talents to emerge. Hazama, as he is simply known, has taken the few years in stride, and busied himself with regular shows to improve on his showmanship and performance, apart from honing his vocals, leading up to today to prove his mettle when his time came. Finally, his voice has been heard and the incubation period is proving good for the 27-yearold who, unlike the other previous champions of Akademi Fantasia, is being more proactive in planning out his career, thanks to much humbling experience gained. Not leaving it all to his management in Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (AESB) to chart the route alone, Hazama already has set course to take his music to another level. “One of the plans I really want to work

on is starting up my own band,” he said. “The idea has stuck with me for the longest time, and right now, I think this is the best time to actually work on putting it together as I feel more comfortable performing live and in that scenario.” Thankfully, Hazama says, his management has been receptive of the idea and that ideas were being bandied about on the best way to approach the formation of the act that will back him. “I am glad Astro has been receptive to the idea and they’re discussing with the upper management on how to go about it.

“For me, getting my own band would be a dream come true, and the start of another phase of me being able to ensure that my music, is all me.” His experience with Meet Uncle Hussain (MUH) obviously will come into play, and Hazama nods in agreement at the thought. “Yes, it will. I am glad for the experience, like every other I have in my life.” For the moment though, for the immediate present, he is focused on planning his follow-up to his debut single in Cinta Teragung. “We have a few options on the direction and feel. One song I’ve recorded is a duet with Amy of Search, titled Simetrik.” Coincidentally, apart from his admiration for Amy as the frontman of the band, Hazama said it was fortunate that the rocker was also his principal for Akademi Fantasia 9. “He has never really done a duet with any reality TV show contestant, and maybe it’s also part of Astro’s strategy, but for me, it’s a golden opportunity and I am glad for this chance to record with Amy on Audi

GOOD MENTOR: Hazama says he is fortunate Amy (centre) was his principal for Akademi Fantasia 9

Mok’s song. “Another potential single is by Awi Rafael and Hang Dimas of Hujan, which is more of a ballad, that we’ve already recorded, which I am also looking forward to hearing the final product.” While many may look forward to an album, Hazama said while he was collecting tunes, it was not for packaging into a compilation for simultaneous release. “Personally, I prefer to launch individual singles before finally compiling it all into an album. This is the best way to make sure that all my material will be killers, with no fillers. “I only want the best material to make the cut for the album.” Meanwhile, his hectic schedule has the singer running ragged. “AESB has a very tight schedule for me, packed with all sorts of engagements,” he said, explaining that was also another reason why he could not be involved in the promotion of the song Pokok, which he recorded with MUH prior to entering Akademi Fantasia. “Plans have been laid out by my management, and it’s unfortunate that due to the time taken up, my schedule doesn’t allow me the pleasure of joining promotion for Pokok.” Hazama however, is secretly happy that his management has not raised the possibility of him going before the camera for anything apart from presenting his music, as the norm with products from Akademi Fantasia to take on acting and hosting. “I will not turn down opportunities that come, though I have to admit that I am more keen to focus on singing and performing alone. “My focus in on music, and I am ready to be judged no matter what people think of me or my music.”

BUKIT JALIL: ATHLETICS

Hurdler gets timely boost

Noraseela to train in South Africa ahead of Sea Games By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

NATIONAL 400m hurdler Noraseela Khalid's (pic) quest to defend her Sea Games gold medal received a major lift when the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) and the National Sports Council (NSC) agreed to send her on a foreign stint by the end of next month. "It's good to finally have an idea of how my preparations would be. It was frustrating before this, but now I have something to look forward to," said Noraseela. Noraseela, who turns 32 next month, will return to South Africa to train under Hennie Krivel. She had been receiving guidance from the South African coach for the last couple of years, and still follows his train-

ing routine today despite being across the globe. Noraseela is likely to leave after the Armed Forces Championship in Ipoh from Sept 19-21. However, it is unlikely she will compete in the meet after being advised by her physiotherapist to skip it. "I have to take baby steps in my return from an achilles injury. I am currently doing

aqua running (in the pools) and also physical workout," she added. She will start running on grass next week before she hits the hard surface later next month. "I don't want it to end up like the last Sea Games where I ran through pain." Noraseela experienced pain in her leg and was spotted limping just days before the women's 400m hurdles event at the Laos Sea Games in 2009. But following a quick "fix" by doctors from the National Sports Institute (NSI), she showed her steely side when she went on to win the gold. At the recent Asian Track & Field Championships in Kobe, Japan, Noraseela recorded a dismal 58.5s in the 400m hurdles, a far cry from her personal best of 56.02s recorded in 2006.

KELANA JAYA: FOOTBALL

Zamri vows to regain scoring touch

03-7495 1273

PKNS FC striker Mohd Zamri Hasan is facing the consequences of finishing as the Premier League's top scorer in their 2009 campaign, with teams having earmarked him as a threat. He found the back of the net 20 times in 2009, but in the recently concluded campaign, Zamri only netted 11 goals. He did miss five games due to injury but he does not feel that was the reason for his lower conversion rate. "It was harder last season because I was getting more attention from defenders. Every time I got the ball within shooting range, I see several defenders around me. "I need to put in more effort in training to improve, mainly in finishing," said Zamri. The 30-year-old admits he has a lot to improve if he were to make a mark in the Super League next season but for now, he has set his sights on the club's Malaysia Cup campaign. "We have been only training for two week since returning from Mecca. We have been rusty in our friendly matches but there are signs that the team is back to its best," he added. "Players are fighting for places

in the starting line-up and that it is good sign." PKNS paid for all their Muslim players to perform their Umrah as a reward for winning the Premier League and subsequently gaining promotion into the Super League. The team overcame Armed Forces 4-0 and KL 1-0 but was on the receiving end of a 2-0 loss to T-Team in their friendly matches over the last couple of weeks.

The Premier League champions have been drawn in Group B with FA Cup winners and Super League runners-up Terengganu, Negri Sembilan and Premier League side Sime Darby. "We must win both games against Sime Darby and hope to get points off Terengganu and Negri Sembilan. Only then will we have a chance of progressing into the knock-out round," said Zamri.

Attacking mode Hamilton, Button must be aggressive to enhance McLaren's hopes

MCLAREN want their aces Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button to take an aggressive approach when the season resumes in Belgium this weekend. With eight races to go, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel leads Hamilton by 88 points in the drivers' championship, with Button 12 further back. "There is no change of mission for the drivers — they should attack at all opportunities," McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale told BBC Sport. "We are not in a position to play a safe game. We have to give everything." McLaren began the threeweek summer break buoyed by holding off rivals Red Bull and Ferrari to score back-toback victories in Germany and Hungary, with Hamilton and Button each scoring a win. "The two victories were like scoring a goal just before half-time," said Neale. "It gives everyone a lift going into the break and you don't have that worrisome feeling on your mind. "Whilst we can draw comfort from it there is no complacency. I don't regard us having the upper hand. We still have a lot of work to do. The next few races are going to be hard-fought as Red

go on the offensive: Button (left) and Hamilton will have to push hard on Vettel (centre)

Bull, Ferrari and McLaren all have cars capable of winning races." McLaren's recent success has also been tempered by costly mistakes. Hamilton lost the lead in Hungary when he made the wrong tyre choice, while Button retired because of hydraulics problems in Germany and saw his race end early in Britain when his right front wheel was not fitted correctly in the pits.

"When you are pushing that hard to close the gap it is easy to make a mistake either reliability or operationally. We are not the only team to have problems around the pit-stops but we've had some notable ones and they are always very painful," said Neale. "We are working very hard on hydraulics, on mechanical reliability and engine reliability. The engine and exhaust programmes that have been run this year have put a huge

strain on the system as has a long season and very tight races. "What is most important for us is to win races and the only way we are going to be able to do that when the competition is as tight as it is, is to keep them (the drivers) focused on taking every opportunity that they can and for us as a team to get behind them. "Under pressure you have to keep your head cool but you have to give it everything."

Schumacher can make first class team principal, says Ecclestone

a born leader: Ecclestone (right) insists Schumacher should lead a Formula 1 team in the future — GETTY photo

BERNIE ECCLESTONE told Michael Schumacher that he should be a team principal when he decides to stop racing in Formula 1. As Schumacher prepares to celebrate 20 years in Formula 1 in Belgium this weekend, Ecclestone, who was previously team boss at Brabham, says he does not see Schumacher retiring any time soon. However, when the time does come for him to look at his next move, Ecclestone believes his long career in the sport makes him an ideal candidate to become a team principal. "I can not see Michael leaving Formula 1 until he believes that the team are not competitive and he really thinks it's time to go," Ecclestone told DPA.

"When he stops, he should run a team. With his experience and his talent, he would be first class." However, Schumacher's current team principal Ross Brawn says Schumacher should continue to focus on winning the world championship, and that it was down to Mercedes to provide him with the car to do so. "Michael is a great driver," said Brawn. "But what is not seen and what also made him a multiple world champion is his work with the team behind the scenes. If we can give him a car with the potential to fight for the championship, then I have no doubt that he will be in a position to win his eighth title."

LONDON: rugby union/ world cup

Tuilagi aims to impress for England in World Cup ENGLAND'S Manu Tuilagi has his eyes firmly set on a starting berth for England, despite cheering on Samoa against his adopted nation in the 2003 World Cup. Eight years ago, he sat at home supporting Samoa as they threatened to pull off the biggest upset of the tournament. The Samoans led England at half-time in their pool clash and a 12-year-old Tuilagi, the youngest member of a rugby dynasty, was roaring on his countrymen. The following year, Tuilagi made the life-changing move to join his brothers — four of whom are Samoa internationals — and live in Leicester. After one sensational season with the Tigers, Tuilagi is now preparing to represent his adopted country at the World Cup next month in New Zealand after being named in England's final 30-man squad. "I've never been to a World Cup before. I watched that game against England in 2003. I was in Samoa — cheering for Samoa!" said Tuilagi. "Before the start of last season my target was just to get into the Leicester first team. I didn't really think I would have a chance with England until I got called into the training squad." Tuilagi made a try-scoring Test debut in England's victory

TUILAGI

over Wales at Twickenham earlier this month, and he is pushing for a second start against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday. England coach Martin Johnson will confirm his lineup today but Tuilagi, although normally considered an outside centre, could emerge as an option for England in the No 12 jersey. Shontayne Hape is the only specialist inside centre in England's final 30-man squad. Tuilagi is as strong as England's props and his work ethic has impressed Johnson and the whole Red Rose management. "I want to get a start. I just run hard at defenders and try to break them down. It is simple but it's effective really," he said.

CHRISTCHURCH: rugby union/ tri-nations

Power-packed All Blacks in decider against Wallabies NEW ZEALAND coach Graham Henry has named a full-strength side for Saturday's Tri-Nations decider against Australia in Brisbane. Captain Richie McCaw and a host of front-line players, including Dan Carter, return for the game after being rested for last Saturday's loss to South Africa. Also recalled are tighthead prop Owen Franks, second row Brad Thorn, and centre pairing Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith. The only notable absentee is Jerome Kaino, who is rested after the South Africa match, allowing Adam Thomson to return to his favoured blindside flanker position after struggling in McCaw's openside spot

against the Springboks. "This is a tournamentdefining match for the team," said Henry. "The winners win the Tri Nations, it's as simple as that. Australia are a dangerous team to play and they will be looking to bounce back from the loss against us in Auckland, so we will have to play at our very best." The All Blacks have beaten Australia in 11 of their last 12 meetings, and are favourites to win the World Cup for the second time when they host the tournament on Sept 9-Oct 23. New Zealand are in World Cup Pool A, alongside France, Tonga, Japan and Canada, while Australia are in Pool C with Ireland, Italy, Russia and the United States.

No surprises Djokovic named top seed for year's Grand final

SERBIA'S world No 1 Novak Djokovic has been named, as expected, the top seed for the US Open on Aug 29-Sept 11. It marked the first time Djokovic was seeded No 1 for the year's final Grand Slam. Djokovic has never won the US Open but has been in great form this year — losing just two matches all season and winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal was seeded second as tournament organisers stuck with their practice of following the official world rankings to decide the seedings. Switzerland's Roger Federer, a five-time US Open winner, was seeded third, ahead of Britain's Andy Murray, the only player in the top four yet to win a Grand Slam. There were two other former champions among the 32 seeds. Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, the 2009 winner, was listed 18th while American Andy Roddick, the 2003 victor, was seeded 21st. Meanwhile, Murray felt the aftershocks of the earthquake that hit the US while preparing for the US Open at Flushing Meadows. The world No 4 was practising in New York, where a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, that originated in Virginia and shook Washington, was

Chambers hopes to exploit Bolt's form

TOP OF THE WORLD: Chambers believe Usain Bolt is beatable — GETTY photo

BRITAIN'S Dwain Chambers believes Usain Bolt's form has given his 100m rivals encouragement that he can be beaten at the World Championships in Daegu. The world and Olympic champion goes into the event as only the sixth fastest in the world this year with a best of 9.88s. "Usain has shown this season that he is a human being," Chambers told BBC Sport. "You never know what can happen. Every man has his day. We have to do our best when we are in that final." Bolt set the world record mark of 9.58s in winning gold at the World Championships in Berlin in 2009. Chambers, who has a best of 10.01s this season, said: "This guy has been dominant in

ways that were unmanageable to us as athletes. "The fact he has not been on top form does not put any doubts in my mind. He's still the number one contender. I wouldn't put anything past him." Injury has played its part in Bolt's dip in form. An Achilles tendon problem brought a premature end to his 2010 campaign, while scoliosis, a curvature of the spine he has suffered from since birth, hampered him over the winter. Bolt is unbeaten since losing to Tyson Gay in Stockholm last August, and while the American will be absent from Daegu because of injury, the Jamaican's season's best is some way off compatriot Asafa Powell's world-leading 9.78s.

DAEGU: athletics/ world championships

Gatlin promises good show despite frostbite FORMER Olympic champion Justin Gatlin arrived in Daegu for the World Championships suffering from frostbite. The 29-year-old, who won 100m gold at the Athens Games in 2004, said he contracted the problem after going into a cryogenic chamber with wet socks. "It's better than it was. It was all pussed up and blistered. It bubbled up and it stayed bubbled up for a good four or five days," he said. "The confidence is rising. I'm getting ready to get out and burn the track." Gatlin won the 100m and 200m sprint double at the 2005 World Championships but in 2006, was banned for eight years — which was later reduced to four — after testing positive for excessive testosterone. He maintains that was the result of some testosteronelike cream that was massaged into his legs. "It was night and day for me. Now I'm trying to get back to where I need to get to, which is being successful on the track," said the American.

Gatlin

He returned to athletics in 2010 with a low-key victory in Estonia, and secured his place in Daegu after being narrowly beaten into second place by Walter Dix at this year's US Track and Field Championships in Oregon. What about this unusual injury? "There is a cryotherapy chamber (where he trains) and I went in there on a hot day and had socks on and the socks were wet from sweat," he said. "I was only in there for two minutes, but for some reason the socks froze to my ankles. It felt like my feet were on fire... and it hurts to walk." Gatlin, in his first World Championships since his double success in Helsinki six years ago, will take part in the 100m and sprint relay in South Korea.

McGinley to wait for captaincy call PAUL MCGINLEY has what it takes to be a Ryder Cup captain, but the Irishman is determined not to canvass for the 2014 post. The 44-year-old has formidable credentials — all three of his appearances have been on winning teams and he sank the decisive putt to ensure Europe triumphed at the Belfry in 2002. Last year, McGinley was one of Colin Montgomerie's assistants in the dramatic victory over the United States at Celtic Manor, and he led Britain and Ireland to victory in the 2009 Seve Trophy against continental Europe. In two weeks, he will again captain Britain and Ireland's Seve Trophy squad. "I know that I'm a strong candidate and I would be extremely happy if the captaincy is bestowed on me. But it's important for me to keep my head down, try to play good golf and see how it all evolves,"

mcginley

McGinley said. "The Ryder Cup captaincy is not something you go out canvassing for. There is a long list of candidates," McGinley acknowledged. "The logical ones are Paul Lawrie, an Open champion from Scotland, with the match being played in Scotland; Miguel Angel Jimenez will be coming to that part of his career, having been a Ryder Cup vice-captain to Seve (Ballesteros) in 1997. "Darren (Clarke) has a strong case; Thomas Bjorn is another. I'm sure there are one or two I've missed too." — Reuters

FORMER Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon lashed out at the club's current administration, saying manager Jose Mourinho acts as if he was the supremo. Mourinho apologised only to the club's fans for his involvement in the fracas which broke out in the second-leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona at Nou Camp last week. Real president Florentino Perez has stayed silent on this matter, and Calderon, who has been highly critical of Mourinho's methods, believes Perez should set the example and have more control over the manager. "The president of the club is Mourinho, because the true president (Perez) has not come out in a situation which required him to do so," Calderon told COM Radio. "Perez should come out to say that Real Madrid's history does not support this kind of acts, but he has not done that because of the dependence he has right now on Mourinho.

Revengeful 'Old Lady' Buffon believes Juventus are capable of winning Scudetto this season JUVENTUS goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is confident they can return to the top of the Italian game by mounting a serious Scudetto challenge. The Turin-based club head into the new campaign with hope, rather than expectation, having finished only seventh in Serie A in the last two seasons. Juventus have signed the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal in order to improve their fortunes, and though Buffon reckons a big challenge lies ahead, he added the fans fully support the squad. "Along with this enthusiasm there is a great responsibility, because we know we have to start almost from scratch and we know that Juventus' history calls for an immediate rebirth. We have to challenge from start to finish," Buffon told Corriere dello Sport. "There is so much enthusiasm, after two bad years from Juventus it is normal that the desire for revenge is so intense.

"Juventus are ready and the fans are fond of this squad. Any fan would be a little dissatisfied after these two years, but instead there was not one day in which the training camp was not filled with people." The 33-year-old Buffon hopes to put his fitness problems behind him after being afflicted by injuries in the last couple of seasons. "I expect to play continuously. In the last few years I have not been able to train and play in a continuous manner. After I was operated on, I have never got an injury again, which is a good sign. "I feel fine and I think I have proved it in training. I hope to play at least 35 of the 38 Serie A games. I will skip the last matches because we will already have won the title by then!" said Buffon. Meanwhile, former Juventus defender Claudio Gentile has called on the club to sign Fenerbahce’s Diego Lugano ahead of Chelsea

defender Alex. The six-time Scudetto winner with the Turin side feel they should strengthen their defence, and, with both players having been linked to the club in recent weeks, Gentile admitted he would prefer the Uruguayan at the club. "Sure, the defence has to be strengthened. A winning team must be set up from the back, the department that was certainly the Achilles' heel last season,” the 1982 World Cup winner told Radio Sportiva “Lugano or Alex? Personally I prefer the Uruguayan." But Gentile feels the key to Juventus' defence is Giorgio Chiellini. "It’s good to play both roles, both central defender and fullback. And a player with great confidence can be useful when there are emergencies. Juventus cannot do without him," he said. Gentile played over 280 times for Juventus in a nine-year spell at the club.

The move has attracted criticism that Eto'o is moving simply to swell his bank balance, but Udaltsov claimed he was swayed by the club's ambition. "Our owner Suleiman Kerimov is a really big person and has real ambition. We have the ambition of playing in the Champions League and that's why we are signing the best players like Eto'o. Expensive Hazard staying at Lille

LILLE president Michel Seydoux voiced his belief that star midfielder Eden Hazard (pic) is worth twice as much as new Manchester City signing Samir Nasri and added the Ligue 1 champions have no intention to sell any players. Nasri completed his move from Arsenal to City yesterday in a deal believed to be worth €28 million and Seydoux feels Hazard's value is much higher. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has earmarke d t he 20-ye arold Hazard as the ideal replacement for Nasri, but a transfer seems unlikely following Seydoux's comments. "When you see someone like Nasri switching clubs for €28m although he only had one year left on his contract, I'd say that Eden is worth at least twice that much," Seydoux told RMC. "We are not selling any players. The team is built around Eden and we count on him. Nobody has contacted me about him, so there's no reason to think that he will not be with us on Sept 1." Hazard has a contract with Lille until the summer of 2015.

Veteran defender Luisao had a go a l s andw iche d between an Axel Witsel brace, with Benfica already ahead on away goals from the first-leg. Nasri aims to win honours with City MANCHESTER CITY'S new big-money signing Samir Nasri (pic) has set his sights on bringing the Premier L e a g u e t it l e t o Et i h a d Stadium this season. The 24-year-old finally completed a protracted £23m switch from Arsenal yesterday after a summer-long pursuit of the player by City manager Roberto Mancini. Nasri, who has signed a four-year deal with the club, becomes City's fifth sig ning of t he summer following the arrivals of Sergio Aguero, Gael Clichy, Costel Pantilimon and Stefan Savic. The former Marseille star failed to win a major trophy during his three years at the Emirates and he admits the desire for silverware played a major part in his decision to join ambitious City. "I'm here to play football

and to enjoy it and win titles," Nasri told City's website. "It's a big relief because it was a long negotiation between the clubs. I was a little bit frustrated because I told the manager I wanted to leave and do the pre-season with City so I could get to know my teammates. "But now I'm finally a City player and that's what I wanted from the start so I'm very happy. "I spoke to Patrick Vieira about the move as it was important to get advice from players who played for the club know the club very well. "Vieira said City are the place to be. It is the club of the future, they want to win everything. They have a big, big, big project." Nasri also took the time to thank his former manager and teammates at Arsenal,

saying via Twitter: "I want to thank Arsenal FC for everything this club have done for me I will always be grateful and I wish all the best to the club. "And thank you Mr Wenger and all the staff you were amazing with me and have become the player I am today because of you." Ma n c i n i w a s e q u a l l y delighted with his latest bigmoney capture and revealed he had been tracking the midfielder since his Marseille days. "He is a fantastic player, he has a great technique, a great mentality," said the Italian. "I know him from when he played for Marseille and I wanted to sign him for Inter Milan five years ago. In the last four years in the Premier League he has improved a lot and now I think he is a top player."

Barton poised to join QPR

NEWCASTLE midfielder Joey Barton looks set to join Queens Park Rangers after confirming he is undergoing a medical in London this morning. The controversial Barton travelled to London earlier yesterday for talks after QPR were given permission to speak to the 28-year-old, still available on a free transfer after falling out with the Newcastle hierarchy earlier this summer. He continues to state that he wishes to remain at Newcastle, but with only one year left on his contract and no new deal forthcoming, he believes he is being forced out. "Going for a medical now, still no contract offer from NUFC... think that just about

makes my mind up," Barton wrote on his Twitter account. "D on't want to le ave Newcastle... I've made that clear but my hands are tied."

CHELSEA confirmed that highly-rated Spain international midfielder Juan Mata has joined the club from Valencia, penning a five-year contract. It was announced on Monday that an agreement had been reached for the 23-year-old, with Valencia having accepted an offer from the Blues. Personal terms have been thrashed out since then, while a medical has also been passed. Mata is now all clear to open

a new chapter in his career in England and admits he is looking forward to getting started. "Right from the first moment there have been good feelings all around me. Training has been great and the players are a great group to train with," he told Chelsea's website. "Valencia was a big club anyway but I have left to join a bigger club, and it is all about the opportunity to win trophies and I have that here." Mata becomes manager

Barton's relationship with the Newcastle board broke down after he criticised the club's recruitment policy via Twitter. Having been forced to train

with the youth team and alone in the aftermath of that incident, Barton started Newcastle's first two games of the Premier League season after persuading manager Alan Pardew he was fully focused on the task ahead. He joined the club for £5.8m from Manchester City in June 2007, and had looked close to signing a new deal in January but talks stalled following Andy Carroll's departure for Liverpool. The contract on the table then has since been withdrawn and the player has been told he will not be offered another. The sale of Kevin Nolan to West Ham irked the oncecapped England international

further, and his comments on the Magpies' efforts to strengthen the squad this summer were not well received in the boardroom. However, Barton, arguably the club's best player last season, continued to perform on the pitch and played his part in a stormy 0-0 opening-day draw with Arsenal and last Saturday's 1-0 victory at Sunderland. Barton's departure would further anger Newcastle fans who have taken to him since his emergence from the offfield problems which saw him jailed in May 2008, and would leave Pardew with another significant hole to plug during the remaining week of the transfer window.

Andre Villas-Boas' fourth signing of the summer — following the arrivals of Oriol Romeu, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois. On his early dealings with his new boss, Mata said: "He said he wanted Chelsea this season to play more attacking football, and that I would be a big part of that. "Villas-Boas is someone who won almost everything last year and we are both here with the idea of winning lots

this season. "The plan is that I can play on either flank or even in the middle playing in between the lines of midfield and attack. I like to keep the ball and use it well, I am an attacking player and above all, I like to set up goals and score them also. "I want to adapt as quickly as possible to my new surroundings, my colleagues and this league, and I would love to win a trophy in my first season. If it can be the Premier League

then great," said the World Cup winner. Mata joins countrymen Romeu and Fernando Torres in West London and is pleased to have familiar faces around him. "Fernando got me excited about the thought of coming here. He said it would be good for me here and that me and him together could be good. I also talked to my family and friends about it as well," he said.

Hillsborough details in the open THE British government is "happy" for all documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster to be released, the Cabinet Office said this morning. Until now, ministers have failed to officially support calls for all the reports about the 1989 tragedy in which 96 Liverpool fans died to be made public. The government was considering whether to release Cabinet papers, should the Hillsborough Independent Panel ask it to as this would be a highly unusual step ahead of the 30-year rule. But after an online petition gained 100,000 signatories, ministers have said they will sanction the release of all documents the panel believe should be made public. It is understood the panel may put forward its recommendations on which papers should be released as early as the spring of next year.

UDINE: FOOTBALL/ CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Positively Gunners Wenger praises his men after sending Udinese packing ARSENAL offered underpressure manager Arsene Wenger a welcome ‘pick-meup’ this morning as they saw off Udinese in the Champions League at Stadio Friuli. This was when the Gunners ensured they will grace the group stage of Europe’s elite competition with a 2-1 victory. Goals from Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott, after Antonio Di Natale had broken the deadlock, saw the London club through 3-1 on aggregate. Wenger was quick to pile praise on his players, following a difficult period for the club. He has seen his best players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri head for the Emirates Stadium exits, but his young charges offered the perfect response to those setbacks in continental competition. “We showed belief in the way we want to play football, we kept our focus on the way we wanted to play and slowly that made the difference in the game,” Wenger told Sky Sports. “Second half it was all us and when you are 1-0 down

away from home in such an important game it is difficult to come back and I think we did that in a very positive way.” Wenger also hailed goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after seeing the young Pole pull off a spectacular save to keep out a second half penalty from Di Natale. “Wojciech is improving from game to game and he has the kind of personality that can deal with pressure and he has shown that again tonight (this morning).” The big games keep coming thick and fast for Arsenal at the moment, with Manchester United to come at the weekend in the Premier League. Arsenal will already enter that game with a number of injury concerns, and Wenger admits he is now sweating on yet another defender. “We have worries about Thomas Vermaelen after the game because he wanted to come off. “We have given a lot tonight (this morning) and it was very, very hot. We play so many big games in the first few weeks, but that will give

us confidence tonight (this morning) and we will have more belief for the game on Sunday.” Meanwhile, Udinese midfielder Giampiero Pinzi summed up his side’s disappointment but added that he was proud of their efforts. “We gave our maximum in these two games against Arsenal, maybe more than that,” Pinzi told Rai. “We are sad at being eliminated, but we can become stronger from this defeat so we can do well in Serie A. The applause from the public was very nice and emotional at the final whistle.” Udinese will now feature in this season’s Europa League.

Trabzonspor to play in Champions League TRABZONSPOR will replace Fenerbahce in tomorrow’s (12am) Champions League group stage draw in Monaco after the Turkish champions were forced to withdraw due to an ongoing match-fixing investigation. Uefa confirmed the decision this morning, hours after the Turkish Football Federation announced they had barred Fenerbahce from playing in the Champions League. “The Uefa emergency panel decided to replace Fenerbahce SK with Trabzonspor AS, runners-up

in the 2010/2011 Turkish league, in tomorrow’s draw for the Uefa Champions League group stage,” a Uefa statement said. The decision means that Trabzonspor’s scheduled Europa League qualifier against Athletic Bilbao tonight has been cancelled, with the Spanish club progressing automatically. There had been a suggestion that Arsenal could be given the additional place if they failed to win their tie against Udinese this morning based on the Uefa coefficient rankings, but this

announcement ruled out that possibility. According to a statement on the TFF website, Uefa wrote to the federation on Tuesday to demand Fenerbahce’s withdrawal, threatening wider disciplinary action against the TFF should they fail to do so. The letter was forwarded to Fenerbahce, who declined to withdraw. “In the face of this development, on Aug 24 an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors was held to discuss the threat of the TFF being exposed

to severe disciplinary sanctions if Fenerbahce took part in the Uefa Champions League this season, and it was decided to bar them from participating,” said the statement. Fenerbahce were crowned league champions last season, pipping Trabzonspor to the Super Lig title with a dramatic 4-3 win at Sivasspor on the final day. The final standings remain official, but Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim is one of more than 30 people held in custody pending trial on the matter.

Uefa said they could not allow a club who had been involved in match fixing to take part in continental competition. “The panel considered that the TFF took the right decision to protect the game, fully in line with our zero-tolerance policy against match-fixing,” said Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino. “The Turkish Football Federation have shown with this decision that they take their full responsibility in the fight against corruption.”
