“This is a disgrace to the spirit of Malaysian football,” the former Youth and Sports Minister told The Malay Mail after visiting Ahmad Jazimin at University Malaya Medical Centre yesterday. SENTUL district police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan said most robbery cases involve smalltime businesses. “The operators have the mindset that since they are small, they are not a target for robbers. This is in contrast with established jewellers who go the extra mile to install security features.” He said police could sug-

gest to small-time operators to invest in better security systems but ultimately, it was up to the traders themselves to decide. “We always conduct dialogues with goldsmiths and jewellers in the Sentul district. They are usually concerned about what actions police are taking to curb crime in the area.”

Small goldsmiths, jewellers shirking security measures because of cost

MANY small-time goldsmiths and jewellers often take security measures at their premises for granted and are now being tempted by robbers because of it. “The small-time jewellers often cannot afford to install CCTV systems and take up more expensive insurance policies. Even their jewellery showcases are cheap glass, not tempered glass and steel bars installed at the entrances are not enough to prevent unwanted incidents from occurring,” said Federation of Goldsmith and Jewellers Association of Malaysia deputy president Ermin Siow Der Ming. Just how easy it is to rob these outlets was proved two weeks ago when a small goldsmith shop at Plaza Idaman Shopping Complex in Jalan Gombak, Setapak, was hit. Siow said these outlets need to install adequate security measures like their more established counterparts, which usu-

ally have security guards and CCTV systems. While it might not be enough to deter robbers, Siow said the effort would at least cause some delay for the robbers and provide an opportunity for police to track down suspects. “This is a serious matter and smaller goldsmiths should not take security matters lightly." The Malay Mail conducted its own survey and found three jewellery shops in Sentul, Petaling Jaya and Jalan Puchong were not equipped with CCTV systems and had no guards. When interviewed, the owners said they were just "sitting ducks" and could do nothing to prevent the threat of robberies. They said it was expensive to hire security guards and found guidelines related to such employment troublesome. A small goldsmith shop oper-

ator, who only wanted to be known as Yip, said he had been operating in the Sentul district for more than 10 years and has never been robbed. “It is not because I do not want to put all the security measures in my premises but, my business is so small and it takes a lot of money to hire guards or install cameras. I think there’s no need for that. "Every day, I am here in the shop. Furthermore, police are always conducting patrols in this area.” Another goldsmith, who declined to be named, said while his shop may not have a security guard, he had installed CCTVs. “I can monitor the activity in my shop from the back room.” He said he was reluctant to hire security guards as he did not know whether the candidates could do the job well.

A Malaysian disgrace FAM expresses regret over firecracker incident

FOOTBALL Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Tan Sri Anuar Musa expressed regret and disappointment over the firecracker incident that led to graphic artist Ahmad Jazimin Jalaludin, 29, going blind in his right eye. "The FAM wishes to extend its sympathy to Ahmad Jazimin and his family. We are deeply saddened by the incident. "This is a disgrace to the spirit of Malaysian football. It is unfortunate there are still fans who endanger the lives of other spectators. An innocent fan has had to pay a heavy price for the foolish act of throwing a firecracker from the stands." Anuar, who is also Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) president, said this incident

had shown to the world "some of us misbehave when watching football". "Throwing firecrackers and mineral water bottles from the stands and striking players on the pitch with laser beams are dangerous acts that portray us as uncivilised fans." He said despite strict police checks, rogue fans still managed to smuggle such forbidden items into the stadium. "This is a recurring problem we face during matches and I hope Ahmad Jazimin's case will be a lesson to all." Anuar was speaking to The Malay Mail after handing over RM2,000 to Ahmad Jazimin, on behalf of the FAM, to help the distraught fan ease his burden.

"I felt a horrible sting in my right eye. I touched it and felt blood trickling down my face," he recalled. "Fragments of the firecracker got lodged in my eye and one of my friends quickly helped me out of the stadium to a waiting ambulance outside. "It wasn’t easy getting out as we had to make our way past hundreds of spectators. I was bleeding profusely by the time I got to the hospital." He said he had to undergo a five-hour surgery to contain the infection and prevent damage to the eye nerves. "I have to undergo eye checkup every two hours daily and I keep praying for a miracle to regain the sight in my right eye."

Arson leaves residents in fear

RESIDENTS of Seri Kota flats in Bandar Tun Razak are now living in fear, following the brazen act of vandals who set 15 motorcycles and three cars ablaze early yesterday morning. The incident took place at 4.30am at the parking lot of the flats while most of its residents were awake and preparing to have their sahur meals, ahead of the day's fast. "I was woken up by my neighbour, who told me the car park was on fire," said K. Yogendran 32. "When I rushed down, I saw some residents moving their vehicles away while others were trying to put out the fire. "Luckily, I managed to move my motorcycle in time as the fire was spreading fast. Later on, we learnt the fire was not an accident as one resident had seen two men on a motorcycle throw some substance that caused the fire."

The fire was put out within minutes after two fire engines arrived at the scene 10 minutes later.

we fear such incidents could occur again, " said Yogendran's cousin, M. Kumar, who also lives in the same block. Two cars and 15 motorcycles were scorched beyond repair in the fire. Cheras police chief ACP Mohan Singh said the case was now being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code. "The forensic team is trying to determine the substance used and we are looking into the motive. It looks like a work of mischief or someone trying to seek attention." Police also told the affected vehicle owners to lodge police reports soon. "So far, we have only received one report on the incident," said Mohan. The security guards at the flats couldn't help the police much as they do not practise noting down the registration plates of vehicles coming into the flat area. Mohan also urged anyone with information to contact the nearest police station.

There's such a thing as too much 'Twilight'

Fans who can't get enough of the heart-throb vampires and buff werewolves are in danger of upsetting big bad studio bosses when they hunt down images of the latest and last film in the series. The makers of the Twilight movies have sued two people they claim are responsible for leaking images of unfinished scenes from the series finale, the Herald Sun reports. A lawsuit filed yesterday by Summit Entertainment in a Los Angeles court accuses Daiana and Hector Santia, who live in Argentina, of hacking into secure computers, stealing Breaking Dawn images and posting them on social networking sites.

Ball starts rolling Talks on sex offender registration bill to resume after much delay

THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will finally have its second meeting with police to finetune the initial draft of the proposed Sexual Offender Registration Act — more than a year after the first meeting. The ministry's deputy secretarygeneral Harjeet Singh confirmed with The Malay Mail: "Yes, we will be meeting next week to fine-tune the bill. It is still in the initial stages and has a long way to go. We still need to find the appropriate philosophy behind the Act." He added the meeting will include proposing a registry SHARIZAT: Ministry eager to move forward system for sexual offenders

and a vetting process for those dealing with children. "We are talking about vetting the backgrounds of those dealing with children like bus drivers, security guards and teachers." However, several women and children's welfare groups believe the Act will not stop sex crimes and argue that making the address of the offenders public could be a violation of human rights. The NGOs further said police should concentrate on putting sex offenders behind bars first before considering how to monitor them when they are released

from prison. Harjeet agreed there was a possibility of human rights being infringed but assured relevant stakeholders would be consulted. "We have to talk to the stakeholders because at the end of the day the Act may not meet the requirements of the public." The minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was also confident of the impending talks with the police. "With regard to the Act, negotiations and discussions between police and the ministry are just about to begin. "This is a police-led initiative and the ministry is eager to move forward on the initiative."

Workshop to heal abused children

ROUGHLY one in every four children younger than 18 in Malaysia, or 2.75 million, would have endured some form of abuse every year. This figure is not only related to sexual abuse, but also includes physical and psychological abuse, said Protect and Save The Children's training and education director Noreen Preusser. What is even more worrying is that the statistical trend indicates the number is continuing to rise every year. As such, Preusser said her child's rights entity advocates the need to educate the public on the need to protect children. With such education, the heightened awareness coupled with a broad-based community approach, especially on parents, could mean more people would better understand how to tackle and solve this issue. Preusser said the worst cases were those involving sexual abuse. "Ninety per cent of sex offenders are known and trusted by the children.

The public needs to be educated on how to prevent and find the solution for this problem as it might happen to their children or relatives." Towards this end, the child's rights entity is organising a workshop on the prevention of child sexual abuse on Aug 13 and 14. "The two-day workshop will be open to all interested adults and we will share with them information which can be used and steps to take if faced with these situations." Noreen said participants would also gain a better understanding of the issue, learning to recognise possible signs of abuse and concrete tips on how to prevent such instances from escalating. "We will share with them the eight stages of how to deal with the situation and help the victim make a disclosure of the sexual abuse," Noreen said. She said children need to be

empowered to protect themselves and they can be healed, but they have to be given strong moral support by the public and family members once the abuse has been identified. "Millions of children and adults in Malaysia had been abused in their childhood. Some of them never got any treatment or therapy." She cited a case where a mother attended a previous workshop and managed to get full disclosure from her six-year-old daughter, who had been harassed by sex offenders. "That woman later contacted us and said she managed to heal her daughter, using the methods taught during the workshop." The upcoming workshop is being conducted at Swan Convention Centre, Sunway Medical Centre, Petaling Jaya. The RM250 fee is inclusive of lunch and tea breaks. Land set aside as permanent worship ground THREE locations in Kuala Lumpur have been designated as permanent sites for relocated temples. The plots at Jalan Cochrane, Setapak and Sentul have been set aside as permanent worship land for temples which will have to be relocated due to developments at their current sites. Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan told The Malay Mail the temples were

required to relocate because they are on government land which had been earmarked for development. "The process of shifting out is still ongoing. At the moment, none of the places of worship for the Chinese community or miu (temple) have agreed to move.” The authorities are facing resistance from certain temples, he said, but City Hall and the ministry have been engaging in negotiations with

the owners. "I would like to urge these temple owners, may they be from the Chinese or Indian community, to agree to shift to the places allocated for them because their current spots form part of the development of the Greater KL project." Saravanan declined to reveal the total number of temples that will have to be relocated. It was previously reported there are 121 Hindu temples and 57 Chinese temples erect-

ed on government land. In 2009, Saravanan had proposed the permanent places of worship for these relocated temples such as in new housing areas or specific spots where smaller temples can be merged. The minister said the Sri Nageswari temple was built on land owned by KTM Bhd. "After discussing with KTMB, they agreed to rent out this land to the temple permanently."

Court rejects Sexy Carol’s claim By CECILIA VICTOR cecilia@mmail.com.my THE Consumer Claims Tribunal Court on Monday rejected the claim filed by Carol Loke against the Fitness First Cheras gym demanding a public apology and compensation amounting to a full refund after the gym terminated her membership. Tribunal president Reihana Abdul Razak said: "The tribunal court has classified the matter as a defamation suit and there is no negotiation in a defamation suit at a tribunal court. The tribunal does not hear humiliation cases and does not give rulings on a public apology and refund." Reihana also said Loke should have sought compensation during the seven years of her membership and not now after it was terminated. "Right now, we are interpreting conduct or behaviour. The next issue is whether Fitness First has unlawfully terminated her membership. This is a matter that must be dealt at the civil courts.” Loke had been encouraged and advised by the Malaysian Chinese Association Public Complaints Bureau chairman Datuk Michael Chong and the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) chief executive officer Muhamad Sha'ani Abdullah to lodge the case with the tribunal. "Both Michael and Sha'ani advised me to go all out to fight for my case. They believe I had been subjected to humiliation and have every right to defend myself, gain a public apology and a full refund.” At the hearing, Loke was unrepresented while Fitness First executive assistant to managing director, Agnus Elizabeth, and gym consultant Li Yen were represented by a legal counsel. On May 24, The Malay Mail reported that Loke gym's membership had been terminated due to claims of her being too sexily dressed at the gym. Loke claimed the termination was unlawful as she was expelled due to complaints received from other gym members. The 47-year-old is now mulling whether to go ahead with the civil courts due to financial constraints.

Mad about football, or just mad?

IT was awesome, wasn't it, the Malaysia-Singapore grudge game last Thursday? Honestly, the quality of play wasn't much to shout about but the huge fan turnout, on the other hand, was simply phenomenal. I was there, with my better half who, while admittedly being almost clueless about football, was quick to accept an invitation to watch the match simply because "the Tigers need my support". We were there early, and as you had read in the papers (if you were not there to experience this yourself), the jam was really that bad. In fact, it was an infinity worst in reality. Scouring for a parking spot at the sprawling Bukit Jalil Stadium was a real pain, but who really cared. This was a national event. A historic moment. One that induced a euphoria of national pride unprecedented in recent times. Our national jerseys (definitely not cheap at RM250 each), and practically everything else that had the word "Malaysia" on it, sold like hot cakes. That, and the overcooked burgers and bottles of mineral water sold all around

'Two and a Half Men' get together THE Ashton Kutcher (pic) era at Two and a Half Men has started. "First day on the new job," the actor tweeted after arriving at Warner Bros studios in Hollywood. The whole gang got together for the first time to read through the script for the new season's hotly anticipated opener, set to be aired next month, the New York Post reports. The highly secretive episode — in which Charlie Sheen's character is reportedly killed off — will be taped this weekend in front of a live studio audience. Some have speculated the secret has been so secure because the show's creator and chief writer, Chuck Lorre, has not yet written the scene explaining Sheen's departure and Kutcher's appearance.

and in the stadium. By 6pm, we were frisked by Rela officers, who politely took away my lighter and made us drink our ice lemon tea by the gate, before making our way to the terraces. Ours were free-seating, and even two hours plus before kick-off, the grandstand was almost packed. It was really annoying that there were quite a number of vacant seats "booked" by some fans who came early for their friends still making their way to the stadium. Our exasperated look must have caught the attention of this bunch of nice girls who waved at us to indicate there were two seats available near them. As soon as we got to our seats, one of the girls gave my wife a Malaysian flag. Even before the game started, the stadium was drowning in noise, and adorned with the bright colours of supporters' jerseys, hairdos, make-ups and what-nots. The Malaysian fans were trying to outdo each other in displaying their support for the team, with one particular segment of fans visibily and verbally more creative than the rest. Sportingly, almost everybody

ForTheRecord With Yushaimi Yahaya

ON WEDNESDAY indulged in unison chants and Mexican waves. My wife was gripped by the fever. The moment she saw three men walking out of the tunnel, each with a ball in hand, she got up, screamed "Malaysia!", before turning to me to ask "sapa tu?". It didn't matter the men could very well be the referee and his assistants — everyone was in the mood to show their patriotic side that night. My wife, who for years asked what madness drove grownups to wake up early in the morning to catch a European Champions League soccer match played thousands of miles away from Malaysia, found the answer to her question that very night. It was a tremendous feeling. It was a welcome change from the "you're either with us or with them" mentality that had besieged the nation, especially in the lead-up and aftermath

of Bersih. That night, we were all one. That said, there were things we both found disturbing about our fans. While jeering and heckling are part of soccer, it did not sit well with us that some overzealous fans were running down the Singaporeans via some nasty remarks on the banners displayed, and via the chants. The jibes, especially on the naturalised Singaporeans were only to be expected, I suppose, but one banner, in particular, went overboard. Gratefully, the fans were ordered to bring it down after it was displayed by those unthinking fans for a few minutes. I will not "honour" it by telling you what it read. Both my wife and I were also uncomfortable with the incessant chanting of "losers" in reference to the Singaporean

players. It was unsporting. I concur but certainly these must pale in comparison to the anti-Semitic taunts hurled at Chelsea’s Israeli midfielder, Yossi Benayoun, during their friendly match against Malaysia on July 21. The jeering of the captain of the Israeli national team throughout the first half earned us unnecessary bad Press. It certainly doesn't augur well for a moderate Muslim nation like ours. The Football Association of Malaysia had apologised, and Chelsea and Benayoun have accepted the apology. They were magnanimous, but we should not let that incident slide away without us learning a lesson. Respect, maintaining dignity and fair play are bigger victories than an impressive scoreline. That, my fellow Malaysians, is what football should be all about... Malaysian fans should not emulate the brash attitude of hardcore soccer fans, especially those famous for inciting trouble in other countries. It's perfectly fine to be emotional but that night in Bukit Jalil was marred by the acts of some fans training what

looked like laser lights on the Singaporean keeper, bottles being hurled onto the tracks (some landing on fans on the lower segments of the stadium) and the worst of the lot, the firing of crackers. One fan, Ahmad Jazimin Jalaluddin, lost his right eye due to this act of stupidity. He was supposed to be by his expecting wife's side but ended up being apart as he sought treatment. FAM deputy president Tan Sri Anuar Musa describes it "a disgrace to the spirit of Malaysian football". He's right. I hope we have learnt a lesson or two. The proverbial ball, in as far as creating a positive culture, or just the opposite, among sporting fans in Malaysia goes, is really in our court... Chua's brave fightback

BLESSED with good looks, a muscular body and a glamorous career as a model when he was 24, Leonard Chua was the envy of his peers. However, it all came crashing when Chua had a road accident along the Federal Highway in October 2005. The accident left him with a fractured neck and lower ribs, broken right leg, crushed left ankle and damaged bladder. He was hospitalised for five months following difficulties with his speech and finger movement functions. He also suffered memory loss and was left paralysed waist down. His condition was classified as a "T1 complete high-paraplegic". “At the time, I was frustrated with life. I couldn’t accept my situation,” recalled Malacca-born Chua, now 30, in a webcam interview with The Malay Mail.

By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

“Every time I wanted to say something I was not able to because my speech slurred.” But the steadfast support from his family, especially his mother, gave him the strength to soldier on. “The power of their love gave me hope and ever since I recovered, I have wanted to help bring cheer to others who suffered like me,” said Chua who, though wheelchair-bound, was nominated as one of Malaysia’s Top 50 Eligible Bachelors by women’s magazine Cleo last year. Recently, he was shortlisted as one of 30 people who will contend for the 10 Most Outstanding Young Malaysian Award by the Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCIM) which was

founded in 1954 (the Junior Chamber movement originated in the US in 1910). "My dream is to set up a rehabilitation centre in Malacca with physiotherapy and counselling for those with spinal cord injuries like me, also stroke and brain injury victims," he said. That dream is almost a reality as Chua was selected one of the 12 beneficiaries of the TLC Promise Me Campaign Season 2 organised by KL-based Truly Loving Company (TLC) and managed by Ernst and Young Advisory Services. “Ernst and Young will help me come up with a business plan for my centre. We meet on Monday to discuss this,” said Chua. "The cent re w i l l cost RM500,000 to set up and I hope to find sponsorship for this."

Dietitians Association of Malaysia president Tan Yoke Hwa said: "I support the Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong's plan not to ban or restrict food sold at canteens, but to allow students to determine their calorie-intake through a new canteen guideline. "I would like more schools to invite dietitians to talk on health matters and help implement practical healthy food preparation classes, a la Jamie Oliver's (celebraty TV chef) style to educate children on what they should consume on a daily basis. needed daily in an interesting manner. Perhaps practical cooking classes could be part of the curriculum. "Schools play a vital part in children's upbringing as students spend close to 12 hours a day in school. Instilling good eating habits will benefit children in the long run." Stating the new canteen guidelines give parents and teachers the right means to follow up on a child's development, she suggested canteen operators modify the menu like preparing sandwiches with wholemeal bread and introducing fruit salads. Meanwhile, National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council (National PTA) president associate

prof Datuk Mohammad Ali Hassan said the government should find healthier substitutes to popular food in canteens. "There was no need for any food ban to be put in place, as long as the ministry finds a practical way to ensure students eat healthily. "Why should we limit students? If they want to eat a burger, give it to them." But, he stressed canteens should be made to provide lowercalorie alternatives such as vegetarian burgers. He also agreed that students Body Mass Index (BMI) should be calculated twice a year as a child's rising BMI could act as reminders for parents to control food

intake and weight of their children. Mohammad Ali also suggested physical exercise should be given more importance in schools.

National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng wants the ministry to come down hard on errant canteen operators.

"School canteens must be firm in what they choose to sell. Local schools have no proper monitoring of students' diet. "Both parents and teachers have a shared responsibility to instil healthy eating habits in children. I'm not saying schools aren't selling good food, but most of them take food matters for granted with the sole intention of making a profit. Last week, Dr Wee said there will be no ban on food sold in canteens despite suggestions to ban food like burgers and nuggets. The ministry thus decided to come up with guidelines to educate students on how to eat right. Dr Wee had said students' BMI readings would be recorded twice a year to check on their obesity levels.

PC World said a "psychometric consulting" firm called AptiQuant gave free online IQ tests to 100,000 people, and then plotted the scores against the browser on which the tests were taken. It found Internet Explorer users scored lower than average, while Chrome, Firefox and Safari users were very slightly above average. "The study showed a substantial relationship between an individual's cognitive ability and their choice of web browser," AptiQuant concluded.

Latar expressway extends toll-free period THE KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar Expressway) has extended its toll-free period for one more month, in conjunction with Ramadan. Its staff would also be handing out free dates and mineral water to motorists between 6pm and 7pm daily. The dual carriageway has been tollfree since it opened on June 23. The 33km route stretches from Templer's Park to Ijok in Kuala Selangor and serves townships such as as Kuala Selangor, Assam Jawa, Ijok, Bestari Jaya (Batang Berjuntai), Kota Puteri, Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, Bukit Jelutong, Sungai Buloh, Kundang, and Rawang. Developed by Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor Expressway Bhd, the expressway also provides access to the North-South Expressway and the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. The concessionaire's chief executive officer Amran Amir said motorists should take advantage of the toll-free experience. “For those with families and relatives in the communities served by Latar Expressway, we would like to encourage them to plan their holiday travels. Try out the expressway and appreciate the benefits of convenience, fuel efficiency and time saving,” said Amran.

ALTHOUGH he has a growing business with the supply of frozen food sold under the "Murtabak King" brand, RZ & RH Sdn Bhd managing director Raja Zakaria Raja Hamid, 30, still insists on running a stall at the Ramadan bazaar at Taman Tun Dr Ismail. The reason is simple. His family began their business there with a small stall almost 30 years ago and their murtabak remains a popular draw. "With more than 15 spices included in our murtabak, the recipe being a family secret, we are usually able to sell about 3,000 pieces a day. They are priced at RM3, RM6 and RM12, depending on size," said Raja Zakaria. Beyond chicken, mutton and beef varieties, they also offer seafood plus cheese add-ons. They have several stalls at

Decision day

Taman Desa Phase One Residents' Association to know fate of security barriers TODAY is D-day for the residents of Taman Desa Phase One. City Hall is to decide if Taman Desa Phase One will be allowed to retain its guardhouses and barriers placed at four out of six access roads in and out of the neighbourhood. City Hall Urban Transport Department deputy director Abdul Hamid Surip tells Hotline they will be meeting with the Taman Desa Phase One Residents' Association (RA) today, along with 19 other guarded communities, which are awaiting approval to their application to implement the new security measures in their neighbourhoods. Abdul Hamid explains that during the meeting, the communities will be briefed about City Hall’s new set of neighbourhood security guidelines. According to him, the duration between an application and its approval is usually one month. "Within that period of time, we will ask them to remove all obstacles blocking the roads. Enforcement action will be taken if they fail to comply." On July 19, Hotline had highlighted a resident’s complaint that Phase One RA, which was formed after members of the original residents association could not agree over fees for security guards, had closed the four entrances from 10pm to 6am daily to save cost. According to the complainant, the residents must travel

It was also alleged newly-formed RA has to receive approval from authorities to put up road barriers.

In response, City Hall said it has only accorded Phase One RA approval for guardhouses for three of Taman Desa's access roads — Jalan Desa Damai, Jalan Desa Ria and Jalan Desa Permai — while guardhouses for roads leading into Jalan Desa Aman, Jalan Desa Setia and Jalan Desa Murni have yet to be approved. The council had told Hotline conditions for the approvals do not allow any obstacles to remain on these entrances until guards have been allocated for them, and

action will be taken against any such obstacles. City Hall Corporate Communications Unit head Anwar Mohammad Zain said the Neighbourhood Coordination and Control Committee (JPKK), established on June 14, is carrying out a screening programme for all areas that are yet to be approved. However, on July 21, Phase One RA insisted its decision to place security barriers was because of rampant crime occurring in the neighbourhood.

• 97 guarded communities have been identified in Kuala Lumpur. • Of these, 30 have City Hall approval. • The remaining 67 are awaiting authorisation of their intended security measures. • City Hall will be meeting the 67 guarded communities in stages, beginning with 20 today, including Taman Desa Phase One.

Long wait for office pizza meal receipt WINNIE CHUA ordered pizza for her and her colleagues more than a month ago but forgot to ask for the receipt. CHUA, of Kuala Lumpur, said she ordered the meal through Pizza Hut's online service on June 29.

"The pizzas were delivered to my office at Plaza Sentral and they amounted to RM189.60," she says. However, she forgot to ask for the receipt, which she needed as proof of purchase for reimbursement by her office.

"It was an oversight on my part. So I called their customer service to enquire if they could email me a receipt,” she says. CHUA called on July 1 and July 4, and on both occasions, she was told her number would be passed to

an officer. "An officer got back to me each time to obtain further information but I did not hear from them after that. "I would assume sending me a receipt, electronically or otherwise, would not be too difficult to do."

● A KFC HOLDINGS (Malaysia) Bhd spokesman says the Pizza Hut management has taken immediate action by contacting CHUA and issuing her a receipt. "The customer service centre agents were also

advised to be more hospitable and receptive towards queries by customers," the spokesman says. When contacted by Hotline, CHUA says she received the receipt last week.

The illegal burger stall in Jalan Permata 9. The owner had failed to comply with a notice to dismantle it — Pix: SHARUL HAFIZ ZAM

THE Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) was swift to act following Hotline’s report last week on the re-emergence of illegal food stalls in Jalan Permata 9, Hulu Klang. Using crowbars and mallets, 15 enforcement officers from the council, acting under Section 46(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1973, tore down a burger stall there yesterday and brought the parts to their warehouse for storage. "The neighbourhood is frequently congested because of this corner stall," says MPAJ assistant enforcement officer Rosli Jaafar. He says the structure was

dismantled since the owner, who resides in the house next to it, does not have an operating licence. "The business usually operates from 4pm to midnight, which is the neighbourhood's busiest time. Previously, when it operated as a burger and kuey teow stall, it wasn't so bad. But complaints started to increase after they expanded the place illegally by setting up tables in front of it." Rosli says the council issued a RM1,000 summons to the owner in June, followed by a notice ordering him to dismantle the structure. Yesterday's operation was

Enforcement officers from the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council tearing down the stall and removing the parts to be taken to the council's warehouse

carried out after the owner failed to comply. Council public relations officer Salawati Anuar tells Hotline they would recommend to its Environmental Department to plant trees at the corner as a permanent solution. Hotline had highlighted the matter on Aug 5 and 17, 2010, following a complaint by a resident that a burger seller and other hawkers had set up stalls which impeded traffic in Jalan Permata 9, 10 and 11. Checks by the council a month earlier found no illegal business activity. The stall operator was also alleged to have made illegal

alterations to the road divider, cut down trees, covered drains and even modified a fire hydrant. Residents had spoken up against the congestion and expressed fear the presence of rats could cause children in a nearby kindergarten to fall sick. The council said it demolished a burger stall there in December but was not aware another two food stalls had been set up. On July 25, The Malay Mail again reported the illegal stalls had returned. Following that report, a council spokesman promised prompt action will be taken.

● THEY can threaten to cut off supply which families can ill-afford to face. The new meters they installed have significantly increased the reading which beggars the question: How do we know the meters are calibrated properly? Who can we turn to? Already, we face increased tariff, plus probable 'faulty' new meters, the consumers are paying double and TNB is still making tons of money, right? — Corrupted A car park 'too far' (July 27) ● THEY don't care if it's double-parked, triple-parked or illegally parked as long as they get to save a few steps. That's the mentality of a lot of Malaysian drivers. I think some of our drivers need to be educated on courtesy. They don't only park haphazardly, they drive like that, too. They never give way to anyone, not even pedestrians. If you try to cross the road even when they are far away, they don't slow down, they step on the accelerator and charge at you, just to have an opportunity to honk at you or scare you. They cut into your side of the road when they turn in, so you have to slow down or even stop your car, just to avoid a collision. And one more thing, they still talk on handphones or sometimes, you can even see them trying to SMS while dominating two lanes. We can't expect the police or City Hall to discipline our drivers all the time. It's about time we grow up and become civilised drivers. There would be fewer accidents and less stress for all of us. — Dan

kl: Dual cab system (June 27)

Towards better taxi service

OTHER than trying to rip off passengers or being hired on an hourly basis, are there any other reasons why cabbies don’t use the meter? Taxi drivers are prompted by passengers to fix the fare when the opening line is something like “How much to Chinatown?” If the average fare by meter is RM7, is it fair for the driver to quote RM10? If the driver has quoted a reasonable fare, is it fair of the passenger to then ask for the meter be used? Cabbies who usually use the meter may just drive off because they feel passengers who want to use the meter should not have asked for the fare. Perhaps some of these passengers do not know how to ask for an estimated fare. What about those who clearly asked for the exact fare by meter which can only be known upon

reaching the destination? Are cabbies allowed to fix fares upon request? If not, can action be taken against passengers that insist on a low fixed fare when the driver wants to use the meter? It is a fallacy for the authorities and public to think that problems are over once all cabbies use meters. Those who are streetwise are aware that meters can be calibrated to clock faster by unscrupulous workers in taxi meter companies and reset them just before inspections at Puspakom. Such unhealthy practices occur anywhere in the world and are not confined to taxi meters. Therefore, many find it safer to pay a RM10 fixed fare than RM7 by meter. The driver, too, ought to be appreciated for his honesty and taking on the risk of being stuck in traffic when the meter can register well in excess of RM10.

Those who charge several times more to rip off passengers are the ones that give cabbies a bad name. When the meter shows RM7.40 upon arrival, the passenger can hand over a RM10 note and ask for RM2 back. Telling the driver to keep the change is the encouragement they need as they go through many ups and downs daily. They are often disappointed with many executives wearing ties, some with jackets, stretching their hands for the last 10 sen, similar to collecting change from the cashier in a supermarket. On the other hand, some foreign workers show their appreciation by tipping the driver. It is not a good practice to ask how much is the fare when it is clearly displayed as it may trigger the driver to give a higher amount. One of the most effective mea-

sures that the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) should introduce is to make taxi and taxi meter companies more accountable for the action of the drivers. For example, the public can seek redress directly with the taxi companies and obtain compensation swiftly. These taxi companies are to set up customer service centres individually or pooled together at strategic parts of the city for the convenience of the passengers and operate online. Taxi meter companies should be made to play a far greater role than now as new technologies can exert some control over all drivers, whether they are renting the taxis from companies or individually owned. One method is to introduce cashless payment which would automatically compel the drivers to be in the good books in order to be credited with full payments.

PJ: Broadband penetration

End stray dog menace

make broadband infrastructure a compulsory service. But what is the point when the quality of our Internet services is so terrible? Even if the law is passed, what difference will it make if the core issue is not rectified? We can’t even get quality services in the middle of the city. I can't imagine what the situation is like in the rural areas. Last year, nine companies were assigned the 2600MHz spectrum band to roll out wireless broadband services using 4G technology by Jan 1, 2013. All these moves make it seem like the government is getting ahead of itself. What our government needs to do is improve the current levels of Internet speed and quality and then move on from there.

I AM in favour of licenced dogs kept within the compound of houses and under strict control of the owners. However, I have no sympathy for stray dogs. They are a nuisance to society and a danger to the elderly and children. They dirty the vicinity with their droppings and are prone to overturn waste-bins and dragging away plastic bags containing rubbish, tearing them apart and leaving it all over the place. Should we tolerate all this? What the authorities are doing to eradicate this menace should be lauded. Throughout the nation, they must continue to wage war against the strays. There is no harm in shooting and killing them. What about the killing of chickens, ducks, goats, cows, pigs, etc? If this is all right, what harm is there if dogs are killed, especially strays? So, let us support the authorities to eradicate the stray dog menace. The authorities should now go all-out and do their jobs without fear.

NOT SATISFACTORY: Complaints against broadband services have gone up drastically — Pic: www.tweetingfollowersite.com

Improve Internet quality first SO many companies have emerged of late catching on to the local broadband bandwagon but the services provided are far from rosy despite such stiff competition. Complaints are abundant and my fear was proven right when the Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum Malaysia (CFM) was reported to have recorded a drastic rise in the number of grouses over the past two years. Here is the rundown: In 2009, 1,324 complaints were received by CFM. The highest — 683 complaints — involved the broadband category. Last year, of the total 1,785 complaints received, those in the broadband category stood at 872. CFM said most of the complaints on the broadband category centred on the speed, which was not up to the mark, and the lack of coverage of

broadband services. The big question mark here is how can so many companies handling the services not provide decent coverage or broadband speed to consumers? I am baffled. Some of the complaints I have come across are varied and cover almost all the service providers. Some of my peers claim a certain provider gives poor service, others say another is too expensive, but most agree the lines and coverage usually deteriorate as time goes by. Just reading The Malay Mail's Hotline on the issue or engaging in any kedai kopi talk, one can also grasp the weight of the problem. But no one seems to be bothered to do something to address it. Recently, I remember Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin talking about amending the law to

Our taxi industry has remained in the backwaters for decades. It is a barometer of our society. Raising the standard of our taxi service improves productivity and the quality of life for both the people and visitors alike. SPAD’s role in transforming our public transport is a vital key to the transformation of our country. Therefore, it must be assertive over all transport companies regardless of whether they are privately-owned or government-linked, and place national interest above all else. Politicians should not stoke the emotions of taxi drivers as they can easily gang up and lay siege to the city by choking the streets. They have already been emboldened by lack of enforcement over the years and any empowerment would encourage them further.

KL: Spirit of Ramadan

Celebrate as one people PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Najib Razak, during the first day of Ramadan, urged Muslims to subject themselves to a mental and spiritual transformation so that it would not be a mere routine fasting month. He said this would be a month which would "enhance and change our life and make us more pious". "It is a month where we can develop our qualities of faith and piety," he was quoted as saying. Although the message was directed at Muslims, I feel the virtues mentioned can be adopted by all. These are universal messages. I agree we should change our lives and be more pious. Avoid wastage and, most importantly, spend wisely Like the PM said, we must forge brotherhood and unity. If we have to share food, we share and assist those in need. At the same time, we must also care for our neighbours and friends regardless of racial and religious barriers.

And I say let's be rational people. We have to because we live in a multicultural nation. Keep things in moderation. When we speak or act, we do them in a peaceful way. Do not hurt anyone. Also, communication and understanding is important. Ensure there is always two sides to a story. Do not think yours is always right but instead try to see how and what the other parties are feeling or what is troubling them, and seek amicalble solutions and answers. We have come a long way since Merdeka. In the 54 years, we have gone through many hiccups and also successes. Now is the time we embed in our hearts and minds that we are united as one Malaysia. Let us end racial discrimination and polarisation. Focus on "we", "our" and "Malaysians" and not "I", "me" and "you". Only that way can we create greater relationships as one people and one Malaysian nation.

Somali famine threat grows THE harsh drought ravaging the Horn of Africa is likely to worsen and could trigger famine in more regions of Somalia, aid groups warned yesterday as they struggle to help the millions already affected. The United Nations last month declared famine in the Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions in the south of Somalia, but rising food costs, poor or no harvests and devastated livelihoods were worsening the effects of the drought. "The next three to four months are set to worsen in Ethiopia, Kenya and parts of southern Somalia and the situation will remain classified as an 'emergency' until the end of the year," aid agency Oxfam warned Tuesday. "The whole south of Somalia is likely to be declared a famine due to a combination of worsening pastoral conditions, further food price increases and poor harvest." An extra US$1.4 billion (RM4.14b) is needed to stop the spread of famine, said Valerie Amos, the UN under secretary general and emergency relief coordinator. Some US$2.48 billion is required to help victims.

SYRIAN security forces pressed on with a deadly crackdown on dissent yesterday as the Security Council held more talks on Syria and the UN chief said President Bashar al-Assad has "lost all sense of humanity". Three more people were killed yesterday in Hama, activists said, a day after Assad's tanks shelled the city following a bloody Sunday in which about 140 people were killed in Syria, including more than 100 in Hama. The deaths have triggered a torrent of international condemnation, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (pic) vented his anger and frustration at the regime as the Security Council held a second days of talks on Syria. "Since the beginning of this situation, I have issued many statements, I have spoken to President Assad several times, and I have expressed my sincere wish and genuine wish

Around 12 million people in the Horn of Africa are in danger of starvation because of the prolonged drought that has also hit parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Uganda. Relief groups are struggling to deliver aid to drought victims and have urged donors to step up assistance to ease the suffering brought by the Horn of Africa's worst drought in decades. The UN children's agency UNICEF appealed to airlines to help fly in food urgently to the drought-hit area. "We're making an appeal to the air transport industry for

free and heavily discounted cargo space to help us transport emergency nutrition supplies to the Horn of Africa," said Marixie Mercado, a UNICEF spokeswoman. British Airways, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic and UPS have offered to transport between 15 and 50 metric tonnes a week, but UNICEF is looking to others to step forward as well. It is trying to get 5,000 metric tonnes of food from its warehouses in Europe to the region, but it costs about US$350,000 to transport 100 metric tonnes of food by cargo jumbo jet from France to Nairobi. — AFP

Congress urged to boost economy PRESIDENT Barack Obama yesterday urged Congress to turn its attention next to boosting the US economy through measures to aid job creation and increase consumer confidence. "We can't balance the budget on the backs of the very people who have borne the biggest brunt of this recession," Obama told journalists just after Senate passed a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling. "Everyone has to chip in. It's only fair. That's the principle I'll be fighting for during the next phase of this process," Obama said in a statement in the White House's Rose Garden. The president rolled out a list of measures which he said he hoped US lawmakers would focus on once they return from their summer recess in September. Cutting red-tape which has strangled small businesses, using private companies to repair the nation's infrastructure, and passing a series of trade deals stalled in Congress were some ways of stimulating

the economy, he said. "When Congress gets back from recess, I will urge them to immediately take some.. bipartisan steps that will make a difference," the president said. "They will create a climate where businesses can hire, where folks have more money in their pockets to spend. Where people who are out of work can find good jobs. We need to begin by extending tax cuts for middle class families," Obama said. And he vowed: "In the coming months, I'll continue also to fight for what the American people care most about. New jobs, higher wages, and faster e c on om i c growth." — AFP

Fossil of 20-million-year-old ape unearthed UGANDAN and French scientists have discovered a fossil of a skull of a tree-climbing ape from about 20 million years ago in Uganda's Karamoja region, the team said yesterday. The scientists discovered the remains on July 18 while looking for fossils in the remnants of an extinct volcano in Karamoja, a semi-arid region in Uganda's northeastern corner. "This is the first time that the complete skull of an ape of this age has been found. It is a highly important fossil," Martin Pickford, a paleontologist from the College de France in Paris, told a news KINGDOM TOWER At least 1,001m Roof – possible alternative energy generation

Pickford said preliminary studies of the fossil showed that the tree-climbing herbivore, roughly 10 yearsold when it died, had a head the size of a chimpanzee's but a brain the size of a baboon's, a bigger ape. Bridgette Senut, a professor at the Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle, said that the remains would be taken to Paris to be x-rayed and documented before being returned to Uganda. The country's junior minister for tourism, wildlife and heritage said the skull was a remote cousin of the Hominidea Fossil Ape. — Reuters

Case for breast-feeding

Hospitals do not support new mothers enough, study shows AMERICAN hospitals are not doing enough to encourage mothers to breast-feed their newborns, raising the risk of childhood obesity, diabetes and other conditions, according to a federal study released yesterday. Less than four per cent of the country's hospitals fully support breast-feeding, said a report issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In nearly 80 per cent of hospitals, healthy babies who are being breast-fed are given formula even when there is no medical need for it, making it more difficult to continue breast-feeding at home, the report said. Only a third of hospitals have "rooming in" policies that allow babies to stay in the hospital room with their mothers 24 hours a day, which can increase breast-feeding opportunities. Nearly 75 per cent of hospitals do not provide adequate support for mothers once

they leave, including followup visits and phone calls, the report said. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends feeding babies only breast milk until they are six months old and continuing breast-feeding for at least a year. Only 15 per cent of mothers currently breast-feed exclusively for six months, CDC director Thomas Frieden told reporters yesterday. "We're a very long way from where we need to be," he said. Failure to promote breastfeeding costs the US healthcare system US$2.2 billion (RM6.5b) annually, Frieden said. If breast-feeding is halted too early, babies have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, respiratory and ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome, the CDC said. "Breast milk does many things," Frieden said. "It is the perfect nutrition for an infant. The initial breast milk

Toppling the Burj Khalifa

SAUDI billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal launched yesterday a project to build the world's tallest tower at more than 1,000 metres in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. The project to built a tower topping Dubai's world's highest building, Burj Khalifa, will see light after the signing of a US$1.2 billion (RM3.5b) agreement between Alwaleed's Kingdom Holding Co and construction giant Bin Laden Group, the Saudi tycoon told reporters. It will take 36 months to build the Jeddah tower, said the Saudi businessman, a nephew of King Abdullah and one of the kingdom's wealthi-

est men. Alwaleed said the tower was intended to "send a message of strength" reflecting the OPEC kingpin's economic and political stability. "Our message is political," he said. The tower, which will be part of a US$20 billion project north of Jeddah, would top Dubai's 828-metre Burj Khalifa which was opened last year. The Jeddah tower will include a hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and offices. It will be designed by American architecture firm Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill. — AFP

Depressed mums put kids at risk CHILDREN of depressed mothers in developing countries are 40 per cent more likely to be underweight or stunted than those with mothers in good mental health, a study said yesterday. An estimated 15 to 57 per cent of mothers in poor countries experience depression due to poverty, marital conflict, domestic violence and a lack of control over economic resources, it said. "Our analysis revealed a positive and significant association between maternal depression or depressive symptoms and impaired child growth in developing countries," said the analysis published in the monthly Bulletin of the World Health Organisation (WHO). More serious growth deficits were found in children of mothers with more severe depression, it said. The analysis was based on

TOUGH LIFE: Women in developing nations tend to suffer from maternal depression. The problem can now be affordably treated. — Getty photo

17 studies of nearly 14,000 mothers and their small children carried out in Africa, Asia, and South America and the Caribbean. They included cases in Brazil, India and Nigeria. "Now we have a critical

mass of 17 studies from developing countries. This is the first time it has been quantitatively summarised," lead researcher Pamela Surkan of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told media.

The WHO did not provide comparative data for maternal depression in developed countries. Inadequate growth in childhood can result in reduced height as an adult, low educational performance, reduced productivity and greater risk of disease, according to the study. "Maternal depression is associated with less responsive caregiving and a lower likelihood or shorter duration of breastfeeding," Surkan said in a statement. But depression can be affordably treated in developing countries through social support, group therapy or home visits, often delivered by lay community workers, the study said. These have helped reduce maternal depressive symptoms in China, Jamaica, Pakistan, South Africa and Uganda, it said. — Reuters

Hunting for a good cause IT'S time to get into that charity mode again! So hit the road, and spread some love. To be more specific, it is time to join the Action To Mobilise All Humanity's (Atmah) annual treasure hunt and help raise funds for the less fortunate. Yes, the hunt is back for another round and this time, participants are in for a treat as well, including cash prizes totalling RM6,000 for the top three winning teams. In addition, each team will receive a goodie bag worth more than RM220. The annual fund-raising affair by Atmah began in 2009. Since then, what started off as another way to reach out to the local community has become a yearly affair, with exciting events and programmes conceptualised specially for those taking part. "It is a challenging and yet fun event with great entertainment that people should not miss. There are a lot of prizes and goodies, including a free entrance to the water theme park of our next destination as well as an eyecatching grand prize to be won," a member of the organising committee of the annual Atmah Charity Treasure Hunt, Pavanathan Kanapathipillay, said. Last year, Atmah took

By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my treasure hunters to Cameron Highlands. This year, the committee decided to bring all the participants to Bukit Gambang Resort City in Pahang. Ask anyone who has been part of the programme and you might be told how much fun the whole event is. In fact, it is more like a holiday or a getaway. "There are no specific criteria for anyone to participate in our treasure hunt. They can just come with a road-worthy car, a valid driver's licence and an open mind will do," Pavanathan said. All funds raised during the event will be the main source of financing to support Atmah's community programmes, including free tuition classes for children as well as living skills pro-

Atmah also distribute essential items like food for poor families during festive seasons. "Atmah is currently operating in a few areas in and around the Klang Valley and we hope to reach out to as many children as possible

through our projects," Pavanathan said. After 10 years in existence, Atmah's focus has remained on the welfare of people, especially less fortunate children. Established in 2001, Atmah began operating by focusing its energy and effort on communities in Kampung Medan to emphasise the importance of education among the

young. Atmah also aims to groom the young ones to be socially responsible citizens in the future. As the years go by, Atmah has also begun to spread its wings throughout the year to empower the local communities across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor with educational projects. Unlike many other com-

munity projects, Atmah's basic function is to request help from more successful individuals within the community to help the less fortunate ones. Beauty is pixel dee

By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my

twitter @klubbkiddkl THE beauty industry is notorious for retouching its ad campaigns, but not until the recent banning of UK ads has the real secret of the industry been so widely discussed. Closer to home, our most beautiful ladies of screen are adamant that while it is an "open secret", none of them could sit comfortably with the idea of getting a little triggerhappy when it comes to airbrushing. Actress Sharifah Norazean Syed Mahadzir, or more popularly known as Scha Alyahya, said it is known that retouching has been widely practised. “I just don’t think it’s a good idea to execute it to that extent. There has to be honesty to some degree, and not overdo-

ing it. The responsibility of celebrities or personalities shouldering the burden of promoting the product is heavy. "Hence, there should be no easy way out like retouching ad campaigns to the point where the individual in question doesn’t even look anything close to that in real life.” Scha, who has just renewed her contract with Bio-Essence skincare line, is adamant that such campaigns need to be testimonies to the product’s effectiveness as opposed to recreated fantasies. Actress Nur Fazura Sharifuddin agrees, being the ambassador and face of several beautyrelated products, including Lux, Nutox, Avon fragrances and Hairdreams luxury hair extensions. “It is important for a celebrity to honestly fall in love with each and every product that they’re speaking for. Being in the public eye, it’s a responsibility to your fans and followers who believe in the product because of you," she said. Personally, Fazura said she ensures every product she en-

That resulted in beauty giant L'Oreal forced to withdraw images used in its Lancome and Maybelline magazine campaigns after complaints that the pictures were deemed "not representative of the results the products could achieve" because they had been digitally manipulated. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed the pictures breached its code on misleading and exaggeration. L'Oreal's two-page advert featuring 43-year-old actress Roberts — the face of Lancome,

L'Oreal, however, insisted the picture was an accurate representation of her "naturally healthy and glowing skin”. Former Calvin Klein model Turlington, 42, promoting Maybelline's "anti-ageing" foundation called The Eraser, had parts of her face apparently covered with the foundation while other areas were left natural to show the effects of the product which promises that it "conceals instantly, visibly, precisely... covers dark circles and fine lines to help conceal crow's feet — as if erased!" L'Oreal admitted the image had been digitally-retouched to "lighten the skin, clean up make-up, reduce dark shadows and shading around the eyes, smooth the lips and darken the eyebrows". But the beauty firm said it believed the image accurately illustrated the results the product could achieve. Scrub, Strawberry Moisturizing Body Butter, and a Peace Ampoule — the complete post-wax care. “The Brazilian Virgin Kit is intended to give our customers the best waxing experience, even after they leave our store. Since we do have many customers who make wax appointments prior to a holiday or trip, the dainty tubs in the Brazilian Virgin Kit are travel-friendly,” said Janet Lim, group PR manager of Strip: Ministry of Waxing, at the launch. Also present at the makeover celebration was Strip’s Ambassador and Miss Universe Malaysia, Deborah Henry, whose hectic and beauty-related work demands that she look good every single time. “Removal of unwanted hair is more than about looking good, it’s also done for hygiene and comfort purposes. Overall good grooming helps to make you more presentable with a better image

and makes you feel more selfconfident,” said Henry. The beauty who has been waxing since the age of 14 believes it is important to go to a reputable and hygienic salon. At Strip, therapists never ever double dip for all their waxing treatments and are qualified as they undergo about a monthlong training programme at the Strip Training School in Singapore. Sweet smelling and pretty in pink, Strip’s Strawberry Wax is developed specially for first time Brazilian virgins. It packs in the healing powers of chamomile and aloe vera to calm and soothe even the most delicate skin. The creamy wax is formulated to be super soft and easy to apply. As it can be spread so thinly on the skin, it dries quickly and evenly. Unwanted hair can be removed without the discomfort caused by traditional brittle wax. Strip is now offering the Strawberry Wax Brazilian Virgin Treatment and the Brazilian Virgin Kit for only RM148 until Oct 31 while the Brazilian Virgin Kit is priced at RM55. Established in Singapore with a prominent brand presence, Strip has 32 outlets in nine cities worldwide — Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, New York, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila. Strip pioneered the concept waxing store and has grown rapidly since it was launched in Singapore in 2002. Strip’s first international outlet opened in Bangsar in 2006. The other outlets in Malaysia are at the Curve, Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall and Lot 10.

Shape up for your heart

“Ayah, I have lost one kilo!” Hasya’s eyes gleamed as she looked at me. It has only been two days of fasting and my second child was already so proud of herself. The weight loss in the first few days of Ramadan is mostly because of loss in body fluids which, more often than not, will be replaced soon after iftar. Just drink two glasses of water and you would have gained almost half a kilo in weight! For those who fast, Ramadan is actually a good time to reduce the waistline, provided we are disciplined enough. I don’t know which is more trying — to abstain from eating food during the fasting period from dawn to dusk, or to restrain myself from eating till my heart’s content when it’s time to break fast! Multi-cultural Malaysia is

By dr haizal haron kamar lifestyle@mmail.com.my a heaven on earth as far as food goes. It is a potpourri of exotic cuisines. Whilst we enjoy and take pride in our food and delicacies, we need to be aware of the health dangers posed. In fact, it is now well known that we Malaysians are not very healthy people. I am sure you would have heard on the radio and read in the papers that we are numero uno in

Southeast Asia and ranked sixth in Asia for overweight and obesity. This is very true from my observations during my trips to Cambodia and Vietnam. Not a single fat person on the streets. In a national survey in 2006, 48.6 percent of Malaysian adults were either overweight or obese. Now obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, so the rounder we are, the higher the risk of getting heart attack and stroke. So where have we gone wrong as a nation? Affluence is partly to blame. We can now afford to eat a bit more and indulge in more exotic foods now — often too sweet or contains too much salt and fat — more than ever before. We are also getting our eating culture and habits wrong. Too much time is spent eating supper in stalls and restaurants. And when there is no time to eat a proper meal because we

are always on the go, we just grab whatever we can find. More often than not, this will be fast foods and snacks. Hot fries are simply delicious but if it is all that we are having for dinner, I don’t think the fat and salt will do us any good. Our children have also begun to follow our eating habits. On top of that, the foods at the school canteens may not be the healthiest. As a nation, we are probably one of the most sedentary. Around 60 per cent of Malaysian adults did not exercise according to the same survey five years ago. When you exercise regularly, not only will you shed the extra kilos, you will also work yourself to a healthy heart and mind. There are approximately 350 million obese people and over one billion overweight people worldwide and about 2.5 million deaths are attributed to overweight and obesity. These figures are of epidemic proportions and

unless we curb obesity fast, we will see a dramatic decay in health and the rise in heart and other diseases. There are a number of ways to overcome this widespread problem. 1. I dentify the problem. Simply put a measuring tape around your waist. A reading up to 85cm (34 inches) or more for men and greater than 80cm (32 inches) for men is normal. Anything above and you will need to lose weight. 2. E at less and eat slow. Do not over-indulge. Eat what you think is just enough for you. 3. E xercise regularly. Aerobic-type exercises such as jogging, walking, cycling and swimming are generally better than resistance exercises such as weight-lifting. 4. C hoose the right foods. Avoid those high in fat, salt and sugar. 5. S upervise our children’s food intake. Fast foods and snacks should really

be an exception rather than a norm. 6. Take charge of your health. Measure your waist and check your BMI regularly. Calculate the calories that you take in and make a conscious effort to burn the extra fats. Did you know that if you are overweight, by shedding 10 per cent of your weight you can expect to reduce 10-20mmHg in blood pressure, 10 per cent in blood cholesterol, 50 per cent risk of getting diabetes and up to 25 per cent in overall mortality? So what are we waiting for, Malaysia? Shape up because size does matter! If you have any questions or comments, please write to me at haizal@tropicanamedicalcentre.com. See you again next Wednesday. To be quite honest, I did not feel any chest pain or bad symptoms during the test but my doctor was quite concerned about the results and he was going to refer me to a heart specialist. He even mentioned that I might need to have a coronary angiogram. I am anxious to know what this is and if I really need one. Mariam

Dear Mariam, Let me tell you about coronary angiogram first.

It is a minimally invasive test to look at your coronary arteries to see if any of them is narrowed or blocked. A long and thin hollow tube called catheter is passed either through the artery at the groin or at the wrist and carefully moved up to your coronary arteries. A special contrast agent or dye is then injected and X-ray images are taken to see how the dye moves through the arteries. All this is done whilst you are wide awake after a small injection with local anaesthetic numbs either your wrist or your groin. Coronary angiogram is able to give a very clear picture of your coronary arteries. Any blocks and narrowings will be immediately evident. If a blockage is found, you may be considered for

a coronary angioplasty which is the passing of a thin balloon through the catheter and inflating it at the narrowed segment of the artery. The balloon is then deflated after a few seconds and removed. An angiogram is then repeated to check if the artery is widely opened. Quite often, a small mesh-like tube called a stent is inserted to act like a scaffolding and to prevent the dilated artery from collapsing. Angiogram is generally a very safe procedure with complication rates such as stroke and heart attack being less than 1 in 1,000 cases. Having said all that, you might not need an angiogram after all. Exercise stress test is a very good way to detect coronary artery disease.

It relies on your ECG tracings to become abnormal when your heart is being stressed (by making you walk fast on the treadmill). Stress test is also cheap and widely available. As good as it is, stress test has many limitations. It can give both false positive and false negative results. This is especially so in premenopausal women where the diagnostic accuracy of the test is lower. When you meet the cardiologist soon, he or she will take into account your symptoms and presence of risk factors for heart disease, if any. If the suspicion is low, he or she may suggest alternative tests such as stress echocardiogram, CT coronary angiogram or cardiac MRI scan.

Radio airwaves for those in need By JEREMY TAN lifestyle@mmail.com.my PERHAPS for the majority among us, now is the best time to reflect on the lives of those in need. It’s the month of Ramadan after all, and besides fostering greater love, patience, humility, and servanthood towards God, all of us, even non-Muslims, should foster a greater love and care for those less fortunate. For Era FM, Ramadan is the perfect time to be filling the morning radio airwaves with the woes of troubled listeners,

making known their problems and in turn providing a helping, err, mouth. This segment is known as Merisik Khabar- Edisi Ramadhan. To those who are unaware, Merisik Khabar is a daily segment on Riuh Pagi Era, the morning section on Era FM, where listeners utilise this avenue to voice their grievances with four million people tuned in. Of course, the trio of hosts, Aznil Hj Nawawi, Ray and Hanif, in turn, provide words of comfort and advice in a bid to soothe their minds. Words alone don’t always suffice, and the segment understands this full well. In some cases, material assistance and a visitation from the radio crew is offered to those listeners in need. The Ramadan edition, now in its second year, offers a slight twist to the usual modus operandi. In collaboration with Revive Isotonik and Pepsi, this year’s Merisik Khabar- Edisi Ramadhan will

PEOPLE-MINDED: This year's 'Merisik Khabar' offers a slight twist to its usual modus operandi

highlight 20 heart-warming stories by listeners, one story for each day on weekdays all the way through Ramadan. The crew will then promptly assist these listeners and provide whatever help is necessary to alleviate the issue. Hitz FM will also be providing an extra voice to promote Merisik Khabar-Edisi

Ramadhan to their targeted demographics. The segment Merisik Khabar was named by Aznil after a song by the late Sudirman Haji Arshad, one of Aznil’s all-time-favourite singers. As he puts it, he hopes that this endeavour will “impart a helpful, loving nature and nurture among the listeners”.

Rekindling true love among businesses and target consumers by peeking into people’s conversations and ending with how to get them.

MR. PRASHANT KUMAR

CEO of Universal McCann Malaysia

A brave and agressive take on all possible analysis and perspectives towards captains of industries and their businesses. We bring you in-depth reporting on what makes their business tick based on its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

This Saturday, 10.00pm

In support of this cause, for every 1.5 litres of Revive Isotonik or Pepsi purchased, 10 sen will be channelled towards supporting the effort. To generate even greater support and contribution for this campaign, there will be four buka puasa events held at four different Giant supermarket outlets by purchasing

the aforementioned beverages. There will be one at the outlet in Bandar Puteri on Aug 5, another at the Giant in Batu Caves on the 13th, one more at Stadium Shah Alam outlet on the 21st, and the final one at Giant Hypermarket Senawang on Aug 26. Hemalatha Ragavan, the marketing vice-president of Permanis Sdn Bhd, said she was glad to be able to be a part of this campaign. “Permanis is glad to contribute to this virtue-filled effort, in giving back to the society. It is our hope and responsibility in contributing to the society,” she said. Perhaps now it is our turn, the average folk, to contribute so that the Ramadan season for the lesser fortunate will be a much more festive period. After all, we are a pretty helpful bunch, right? KHAIRUNHANISAH AZLAN HANIF, Ahmad Fadali Baharudin and Ahmad Farhan Syarif Mohd Yasin are three promising amateur golfers. All are grateful to their fathers for introducing them to the sport. They are lucky to have fathers who are supportive of their interest as golf is regarded as a game for the rich and famous. Khairunhanisah, also known as Yon, and Ahmad Farhan are students of Islamic International University Malaysia. Ahmad Fa d a l i i s f r o m Un i v e r s i t i Kebangsaan Malaysia. They are among seven student golfers picked to represent Malaysia at the World University Games in Shenzen, China, next Thursday. The trio have enough experience with Fadali enjoying a three-year spell in the Putra Cup team from 2007-2009, while Yon and Farhan made it to the podium in previous Asean University Games. Yon , w h o p l ay e d i n t h e 2008 World University Golf Championship, said: "My dad

is a keen golfer and he is fully behind my progress. My younger brothers Munir and Azhar have also taken to the greens. "Since dad has given me his blessings, I hope to turn pro soon." Meanwhile, Fadali also owes his foray into the sport to his father. However, his father has advised him to take it slow in his golf exploits. "He wants me to focus on studies and I took heed of his advice. At the end of the day, I intend to get involved in a business that has to do with golf. Perhaps also coaching." All three dispelled perceptions that golf was an exclusive DADDY'S GIRL: sport and agreed Khairunhanisah that it was now heads to China affordable and next week accessible to all.

A microbiology student at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Hwei Yih was ecstatic that she would be making her debut for Malaysia. She used all her experience to win the last slot on a four-member team from a field of six players. The 22-year-old won two matches out of five to make the cut and was ecstatic. "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would one day represent my countr y. I thought playing chess was just fun. I play chess leisurely besides representing Johor Schools' Sports Council and UKM in local competitions between 2006 and now." Hwei Yih's favourite opening moves are Queen Gambit (white) and Sicilian (black). Kluang-born Hwei Yih, who is the youngest among five siblings, hopes the experience in Shenzen will pave the way for her to compete actively in chess. "I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to friends and family members who persuaded and encouraged me to enter the pre-qualifier to Shenzen. "I have never been abroad before. I am really looking forward to it. I hope to achieve a respectable position for Malaysia in chess."

Champs to host series REIGNING champions National Defence University of Malaysia will host the first-leg of the fifth Annual Malakoff University Duathalon Series (MUDS) on Sept 24. Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaya will stage the second- and third-legs on Oct 1 and Oct 15 respectively. The public can also compete in the men's and women's open category, mixed team and men's relay and media categories. Head of Malakoff Corporate Communications Yusop Rashid said: "The key objective is to boost the duathlete community in Malaysia of various fitness levels by offering shorter distance races. "It also serves to inculcate and encourage competitive spirit as well as promote the sport in universities and the public." National Defence University, who will defend the overall title, will be

spearheaded by Chan Jun Shen, who is also the defending men's individual champion. "I hope to emulate last year's feat. I also want to redeem myself as I have yet to win any championships this year. "Seeing that I'm in final year (of studies), time constraints and lack of training has affected my performance," said Jun Shen, a mechanical engineering student. Jun Shen will not be alone in his bid to win honours for the university as last year's runner-up in the women's category, Suria Sarudin, is also in the team.

IN HOT WATER: Akmal is one of the five players

FAM must be fair in dishing out punishment

THERE is a Malay saying, kerana mulut, badan binasa. And that adage aptly applies to footballers and coaches in the country. It seems battering a person on the field has a lesser consequence than speaking against a referee or a FA of Malaysia (FAM) official. Without doubt the men in black ought to be treated with utmost respect. However, history has shown the decisions made by FAM's Disciplinary Board (DB) have been rather erratic. In 1 9 9 1 , t h e n Pe r a k team manager Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar was slapped with a three-year ban for questioning the referee's credibility. F e l d a Un i t e d c o a c h Reduan Abdullah and former Kelantan coach B. Satianathan were handed heavy suspensions and fines for apparently "speaking against

FromThe Sidelines With Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my

policy matters". Reduan was slapped with a year-long ban for speaking about the poor fitness levels of players in the M-League in 2009. Satianathan meanwhile, served a six-month suspension for questioning fixtures involving T-Team and Perlis last year. Reduan was sacked by Felda while Satianathan was redesignated as the Kelantan FA's chief executive officer for coaching and development. However, Selangor defender Khairul Annuar Baharom was only handed a three game ban despite headbutting T-Team's Haris Safwan in a Malaysia

Cup match last year. Now Perak are the latest victims to fall prey to the DB's bizarre decisions. The Silver State will have to forgo their dreams of netting the Malaysia Cup after five of their players were suspended for seven matches and fined RM4,000 each for "attacking" referee Mohd Sabri Mat Lazim in a Super League match against Sabah at the TLDM Stadium in Lumut on May 19. The five — Akmal Rizal Rakhli, third choice national goalkeeper Nasril Nourdin, Syazwan Roslan, Azmeer Yusoff and skip-

per Shahrulnizam Mustapha — had apparently disputed Sabri's decision to award Sabah a free-kick just outside the penalty box in the dying minutes of the match. The players, however, claim they did not "attack" Sabri. "Honestly, I'm afraid to say anything as I don't want to be penalised further," said Akmal. "We approached the referee to voice our opinion about his decision. That's it. I thought we would be able to defend ourselves in front of the board but that didn't happen." Apparently, FAM sent a letter to the Perak FA but the State body could not reach the players in time for response due to the break in the league. The Seladang have appealed against the decision and are now waiting for a merciful outcome. However, this leaves the

players in a fix because if Perak end their Malaysia Cup campaign prematurely, they will not be able to play in the league's curtain raiser next season. This could abe a problem if they plan to extend their contract or play elsewhere. Any form of physical aggression should not be condoned on and off the field. However, justice can only be served when those involved are given the right to defend themselves. Those in the DB should know better.

As revealed in the leading English case of R v Sussex Justices, Ex parte McCarthy: "Not only must justice be done, it must also be seen to be done."  HARESH DEOL is a Senior Journalist with The Malay Mail. JAPAN'S 40-year-old wonder woman Kimiko Date-Krumm beat newly-married Argentine Gisela Dulko 7-5, 6-0 this morning in a post-honeymoon wake-up call to reach the second round of the San Diego Open. Date-Krumm won the event in 1996 back in her first tennis life and just before she retired to eventually spend 11 years out of the game.

Easy win for Date-Krumm

Her victory in just under 90 minutes with six breaks of the distracted Dulko got Date-Krumm off to a much more promising start at this edition after losing in qualifying rounds here a year ago. She was joined in the second round by Japanese compatriot Ayumi Morita, a winner over Australian Jelena Dokic 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and second-round opponent for Serbian fifth seed Ana Ivanovic. Date-Krumm, who took five-time champion Venus Williams to three sets in their

Wimbledon second-round encounter in June, said that she had some luck in victory over Dulko, who married a Real Madrid footballer a few weeks ago. "I was confused a bit in the first set," admitted the Japanese winner, who returned to tennis in 2008 and got back into WTA play by mid-2009 after years of encouragement from her German husband. "I knew her game and how she wanted to play. When I was down 3-5 I started a small comeback. I had some mis-

takes but that was the start." Date-Kurmm said she never reflects upon the fact that she won the trophy a decade and a half ago. "It was a long time ago. I had a lot of confidence then. Of course I was much young and all of the muscles and the shots — they were better then than now. But I'm enjoying my tennis more now than I did back then," she confessed. Seeds went 1-2 in opening play with No 11 Maria Kirilenko taking the day's

first early victory as she beat Rebecca Marino 6-3, 6-2 with the Canadian troubled by back pain and needing a medical timeout. Italy's Alberta Brianti beat tenth-seeded compatriot Flavia Pennetta 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 while New Zealand's Croatianborn Marina Erakovic upset Russian number 14 Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-2. Kendrick to appeal drug ban

SAARVINDRAN: Hopes to get a call-up from Harimau Muda A

BANNED American tennis player Robert Kendrick will appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) to shorten his 12-month suspension for doping, his attorneys said yesterday. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) suspended the 31-year-old American last week after he returned a positive test result for methylhexaneamine (MHA) at the French Open. Kendrick wants his suspension reduced to three months, which would allow him to compete at the US Open starting Aug 29. Kendrick claimed he took a pill to help him cope with jetlag without knowing it contained

the banned substance. MHA, a stimulant used in nasal decongestants and commonly used by body builders, was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list last year and has since led to bans for scores of athletes. The ITF wrote in their summary that they did not believe that Kendrick took the substance as a performance enhancer. However, the Tennis AntiDoping Program holds players responsible for ensuring no prohibited substances enters their bodies, unless they hold a valid exemption for therapeutic use, which Kendrick lacked. — Reuters

Saarvindran hopes to make a difference with Selangor D. SAARVINDRAN did not have the best of times during the recently concluded Premier League season. While he was head and shoulders Harimau Muda B's best player throughout, his teammates often let him down with dismal performances in the second-half of the season. No doubt it was a learning process for the team but often enough, Saarvindran cut a forlorn figure. Now, he has an opportunity to step up a notch and test himself against more established players and the Harimau Muda B skipper vows to make the most of his chances. He has joined Selangor

on a three-month loan as his service is needed by the Giants to beef up their midfield and attack in the upcoming Malaysia Cup campaign. "I hope I can make a difference for Selangor. I will push myself to win a place in the starting line-up," said Saarvindran. However, he refused to comment when asked if he wants stay at Selangor beyond the loan period. "I still have a contract with the national set-up. It runs till December." Saar vindran is hoping to be called into Ong Kim

Swee’s Harimau Muda A squad but having already been dropped once by the latter, he should not get his hopes up. The 19-year-old should be out to impress and catch the attention of State and club sides. Since going for a couple of stints in Slovakia with the Harimau Muda A side last year, Saarvindran was asked to captain the 2010 President Cup-winning side instead of playing with Kim Swee’s boys in the Super League. The striker-cum-midfielder is already a proven goalscorer. He scored 10 for Harimau Muda B in the 2009 season

while in the recently concluded season, the Klangborn player found the back of the net six times, mostly from midfield. With Selangor’s attack still stuggling with the loss of hitman Safee Sali to Indonesia’s Pelita Jaya, it is hoped that Saarvindran will be able to contribute some goals. The Giants have also loaned striker Haziq Zikri Elias and defender Mohd Nazri Ahmad from Harimau Muda A. For these three young boys, they need to make the best of this opportunity and who knows, other teams may come knocking at their doors with contracts.

SERBIAN teen tennis player Bojana Jovanovski had two days to forget after she went to Carlsbad, New Mexico instead of Carlsbad, California for the WTA San Diego Open. The 19-year-old Serb, ranked 53rd in the world, almost missed her first-round match after she was somehow presented with an erroneous ticket to a tiny desert town nearly 1,500 kilometers short of her intended destination. The confused teenager, who played last week's tournament in

Maryland, spent the night in the New Mexico town before taking an early flight to California, where she arrived a mere 30 minutes before the start of her delayed match. "They said they were at the airport and looking for me," she explained. "I said I was the only person here." Things didn't improve much for Jovanovski once she finally got to the correct Carlsbad. She lost her first-round match against ninth-seeded italian Roberta Vinci 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. — AFP

Knowing Tiger like I do, I don't think he would come back to play unless he was ready -- Darren Clarke

NEW YORK: GOLF

Tiger out of woods I feel good now, says former world No 1

FRESH from a practice session and eager to play again, Tiger Woods says he feels better than he has in a long time ahead of his return this week from a three-month injury layoff. The former world No 1, speaking to reporters this morning ahead of this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, said the left leg pain that kept him out of tournament golf since May was behind him. "It feels solid, it feels stable, no pain," Woods said after playing nine holes at Firestone, where

he is a seven-time winner, without a noticeable limp. Woods has not competed since he withdrew from the Players Championship in May after completing just nine holes and the 35-yearold American said he was excited to make his return to the game he once dominated. The 14-time Major champion will tr y to get back into the swing of things this week at Firestone, t hen pl ay next week at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. He also hopes to qual-

ify for the season-ending playoffs for the FedEx Cup and has signed up to play the Australian Open in Sydney in November, making him a likely starter for the following week's Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. A practice round yesterday in Atlanta and this morning's nine holes pleased him. "I still haven't been in a competitive environment yet, so that's a totally different atmosphere," he said. "But the shots felt crisp, clean. I was very pleased." Woods, who missed the US Open at Congressional

and the British Open at Royal St George's because of the injury, said he had the urge to resume play last week at the Greenbrier Classic, but held off. "Docs advised that maybe I'd want to take another week of training and really start pushing it pretty hard, so I did, and I feel good now." Woods hurt his left k n e e l i g a m e nt s a n d Achilles tendon during the Masters in April but returned to competition about a month later at the Players, which he said was too soon. US Open winner McIlroy, ranked fifth in the world, picked Ryder Cup hero and partner McDowell, for the Nov 24-27 event in China, reprising a duo that was narrowly beaten in the 2009 event. "Graeme and I really enjoyed the experience at Mission Hills two years ago. We only missed out by a shot, and are looking forward to forming the Irish team again and trying to go one better this time," 22-year-old McIlroy said. The p air, b ot h f rom

Northern Ireland, were last month joined by countryman Darren Clarke as major winners, but it was McDowell that McIlroy gave the selection nod to. "There is nothing quite like representing Europe in the Ryder Cup or Ireland in the World Cup — It's a real buzz," said McDowell, the 2010 US Open winner. "We worked well as a partnership two years ago, and we can't wait to try to claim the title at Hainan Island." Masters winner Charl Schwartzel has also confirmed his participation in the biennial tournament and will pair up with last year's British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen. It a l y ' s E d o a r d o a n d Francesco Molinari won in 2009. Francesco, the highest

ranked Italian at No 23 in the world, could have selected Matteo Manassero (30th) as his partner, but opted for his brother (43rd) instead. Eighteen exempt nations out of the 28 lining up at Hainan Island have confirmed their entry. Their partners have to be announced by Aug 22. Nine more countries will qualify via regional qualifiers in Asia, Europe and South America, with the top three from each gaining exemption. As the host nation, China qualifies automatically. That's my opinion and I've had it for some time," he said at the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring. Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo had also said that he would not compete. However, it remains to be seen if the FIM-commissioned report persuades them to change their minds. — AFP

SWINDON TOWN manager Paolo Di Canio has hit out at football back in his homeland following a betting scandal that erupted this summer. The former West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday player has returned to his adopted home to carve out a career in management. And he criticised the system in Italy which has been troubled by yet another scandal, just five years after the infamous Calciopoli match-fixing saga.

"I signed (with Swindon) just when the whole betting scandal was exploding," the former Lazio and AC Milan star told Gazzetta dello Sport. "These episodes are the result of an erroneous system. In the third tier there are people with fake contracts and players paid under the table. "There are players who ask for a loan on their house but then find themselves without a salary. "Betting is just a result of this. It's morally appalling but if you've got to feed your family, you don't have a choice.

"The players pay the penalty while the organisations stay where they are." Di Canio also hit out at Italian teams' lack of faith in youth players, pointing to Alessandro Del Piero (36) and Francesco Totti (34) still playing important roles for Juventus and Roma respectively. "If Roma and Juve are still relying on Totti and Del Piero then you can understand why Italian football is in crisis," he added. "One's 34 and the other's 36 but on the pitch you need players who can run."

Lyon in for Delvin LYON chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed that the club could be about to move for Delvin Ndinga. The Auxerre midfielder recently admitted that he would welcome a switch to Stade Gerland, following intense speculation regarding his future. Lyon welcomed his comments by launching a bid for the 23-year-old Congo international and it appears the player has reached agreement over a four-year contract. Aulas insists the club will not be spending big this summer, with it important to cut costs rather than increase them, but admits Ndinga would be a useful addition to Remi Garde's squad.

Potters to nick Bendtner BENDTNER

TONY PULIS is lining up a shock £9m (RM43.3m) bid for Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner as he steps up his recruitment drive. The Stoke boss is weighing up a club record offer for Bendtner after the Denmark international’s agents made contact over the weekend. The striker will be allowed to leave Arsenal this summer after enduring a difficult season last term, scoring only twice in the Premier League. Now Pulis is ready to offer the cocky 23-year-old a fresh start at the Britannia Stadium and the chance to stay in England.

Call for united stand Striker Kuyt wants Liverpool to defend as a team

LIVERPOOL striker Dirk Kuyt admits they are shipping too many goals in pre-season but insists the competitive opener against Sunderland is their main concern. The big-spending Reds open their Premier League campaign at home to the Black Cats on Aug 13 at Anfield but questionable form in their buildup has set alarm bells ringing. A 3-0 defeat to Championship side Hull City was replicated in defeat to Galatasaray days later, and Liverpool again conceded three against Norwegian side Valerenga in a 3-3 draw on Monday. But Kuyt called on his teammates to put their heads together in order to overcome the problem before the Sunderland match. "We are letting in too many goals but the point is we have to defend like a team," Kuyt told the club's website.

"That starts from the front and we need to improve. We know we have the ability and we just need to train really hard." Next up for Liverpool is the visit of Valencia on Saturday,

Lonely boy Barton

JOEY BARTON evoked George Orwell, author of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four, as he delivered further commentary on his fallout with Newcastle, who forced him to train alone this morning. Barton was told yesterday he could leave the Premier League team on a free transfer after his stormy relationship with the St James's Park hierarchy reached breaking point. The midfielder was unhappy with

but Kuyt believes the results will be insignificant if they can begin the competitive season with a victory. "We have another practice game on Saturday to put things right. I'm sure if we do that a little bit better in the next game then we will be ready for Sunderland.

Newcastle's decision to allow captain Kevin Nolan to join West Ham during the close-season and his mood wasn't improved by the recent breakdown of talks over a new contract. The 28-year-old showed his frustrations with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and the club's directors with a series of angry posts on Twitter. And he took to the social networking site again yesterday, writing: "Made to train alone today, how predictable........." Just before that he quoted Orwell, posting: "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act." Later he revealed that he had also been fined two weeks wages for his comments. "The inevitable — 2 weeks wages fine has just arrived," he tweeted whilst adding he would appeal. Despite his troubled past, it is understood Barton is a wanted man, with several Premier League sides in the running for his services. Agent Willie McKay has confirmed a couple of top clubs have been in contact, and has stated there "won't be a problem finding Joey a home". — AFP

"I'm not concerned as it's still preseason. If we beat Sunderland in our first game then it's been a good pre-season for us," said Kuyt, whose side also shipped three goals against Malaysia and Guangdong earlier in pre-season. "We have to do a little bit more to be ready for the league but we still have time to work on things." Midfielder Charlie Adam, meanwhile, insists Liverpool can survive without injured captain Steven Gerrard. Manager Kenny Dalglish bolstered his options with Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Adam arriving to join the likes of Raul Meireles, Lucas Leiva and Jay Spearing at Anfield. "Liverpool have many other talented midfielders. I think the competition for places will be good for the club. I thrive on that type of challenge and I’m sure the other lads will as well. "I want to learn and there are some of the best players in the world at this club. So if I can learn from them I am going to improve as a player."

The 25-year-old USA i nte r n at i on a l, w ho can play in defence or midfield, was a free agent after his contract with West Ham United — who were relegated like Birmingham from the Premier League in May — expired at the end of last season. "Jonathan is a player who has got experience of playing in the Premier League and as an internat i ona l for America so he has good credentials. And at 25 he's at a very good age," Birmingham coach Chris Hughton told

t h e C h a mpi on s h ip club's website. "He is versatile and can play in a few positions. I think he will be a big asset for this club." Spector, who has signed a two-year contract, moved to England in 2003, playing three times for Manchester United. He then moved to West Ham in 2006. He made his international debut in 2004 but was restricted to the bench at last year's World Cup in South Africa. Birmingham were relegated at the end of last season but also enjoyed the high of beating Arsenal in the League Cup final — their first top level silverware since winning the same trophy in 1963 — which books them a place in this season's Europa League. — AFP

FOCUS ON CHELSEA

Warlords' battle cry Ageing Chelsea can still mount challenge under Villas-Boas

CHELSEA may have a new manager in 33-yearold Andre Villas-Boas but they are poised to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title which they lost to Manchester United last season. Villas-Boas may have tried out the 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 set-ups in pre-season matches in Malaysia, among others,

but the bottom line is that Chelsea are a well-balanced side with quality players in their fold as usual. Never mind the fact that several of them, like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry are over 30. These players are still handy with their vast

experience as the Blues aim to win all the titles at stake in the new season and this includes the elusive Champions League. There are also youngsters who can be relied upon in the long and gruelling season like striker Daniel Sturridge and rising star Josh McEachran. The 18-year-old Mc E a ch r an has b e e n impressive in pre-season and can go far if given more playing time. He is said to be one of those players who Chelsea could send on loan to gain experience but this may not b e t he case now. Brazilian defender David Luiz, who joined the club last Ja nu a r y, i s expected to

be a key figure after producing some good performances in the second-half of last season to make him an instant ''cult'' figure at Stamford Bridge. Besides his defensive ability, the floppy-haired and 6ft 2in tall Luiz is also capable of assisting the attack. Much has been said about striker Fernando Torres. Don't be surprised if he starts scoring goals. After all, he is a quality striker who may just be mentally affected by what has been said or written about his goal drought. Some say Villas-Boas will be under tremendous pressure to deliver. The Portuguese tactician and former Porto boss knows this well. He would not have agreed to take over from Carlo Ancelotti if he is worried or scared. Like some say, to be champions in sports, one has to overcome pressure. If not, forget it.

FOCUS ON EVERTON

Toffees may enjoy sweeter season

EVERTON could have finished among the top six in the Premier League last season if not for their ''slow start'' and the strikers' failure to score as often as they should. In the end, it was Aussie midfielder Tim Cahill who finished top scorer in the league with nine goals for Everton. To be fair, however, strikers like Victor Anichebe and Loius Saha were also troubled by injuries and could not really contribute that much. Now the good news for manager David Moyes and the Toffees' fans, these two stalwarts seem to have regained the kind of fitness level which can assist the club in their new season campaign. For instance, Anichebe is praying his injury nightmare is over and has vowed to start repaying the faith shown by Moyes. The Nigerian admits he suffered the lowest point of his career when he missed the opening four months of last season with an ankle injury suffered in pre-season. This time it has been more productive with Anichebe

both up front and on the flank already this pre-season, having impressed on the right of midfield for the first team in recent years. Strikers aside, Everton have plenty of quality in midfield and defence.
