Sports Commissioner's Office to probe paralympic council over RM4m 'investment' By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my Wednesday 29 JUNE, 2011

THE Sports Commissioner’s Office will be sending a letter to the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) today seeking for explanation over its controversial RM4 million "investment". The Paper That Cares, had in a probe last week, revealed MPC channelled the amount to an event management company, Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd. Checks with the Companies Commission of Malaysia showed MPC president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin and sons Idi Irwan and Ilia Ikhwan were listed as the directors of Paralimpik Ventures. Investigations showed a cheque for RM2 million was issued on April 4, 2008 and another RM2 million transferred on April 17, 2008. WHY was a staggering RM4 million invested by the Malaysian Paralympics Council (MPC) in a company helmed by its president and his sons? This is the poser raised by several council members upon learning of the investment recently. A probe by The Malay Mail revealed that in 2008, MPC had invested RM4 million in an events management company, Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd. Our investigations showed a cheque for RM2 million was issued on April 4, 2008, and another RM2 million was transferred about two weeks later, on April 17, 2008. The cheque and telegraphic transfer were allegedly signed by MPC president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin and its then treasurer, Liew Yoon Loy. It is understood the money was derived from donations and fund-raising activities carried out by MPC over the years. Sources claimed nothing on the hefty investment had been heard of since. A check with the Companies Commission of Malaysia revealed Zainal and his sons, Idi Irwan and Ilia Ikhwan, were PETALING JAYA

Wednesday but was quick to add that they would still need a written explanation from MPC over the matter. “We will send them a letter first thing tomorrow (today) and we want a written explanation from them,” said Yassin. “We will decide on our next move once we get the explanation.” Olympic Council of Malay-

listed as the directors of Paralimpik Ventures. One person not amused by this episode was MPC council member Prof M. Chandra Sekaran, who said the issue had raised more questions than answers. "Who allowed the investment? Was it documented? How much have we made? Most importantly, who will be held responsible if the investment goes wrong?" he asked. Chandra claimed he was approached by Zainal to invest some money in the company in 2008. Chandra was the treasurer for the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) then. "We were told it was a new scheme by Bank Negara Malaysia that promises to double the investment within a year but we at the MAB did not agree to it. "Millions have been channelled out of MPC but it has not been documented. Such an investment requires the approval of two-thirds of the council, not just a handful of people." He said there was no letter of undertaking by Bank Negara

on the investment. "The manner the investment was done is unethical and we have been kept out of the loop for far too long. "Now, where is the money?" Chandra said he was eager to raise this issue at the muchawaited annual general meet-

up," Lee, who is also founder and president of the Malaysian Disabled Persons Sports Association, said. "This has to be clarified. Such dealings must be done in a transparent manner." Zainal, however, maintained the money was secure and kept

ing (AGM), which could be held soon. It was learnt the MPC had not conducted its AGM since 2005 and was only registered with the Sports Commissioner’s office in May 2008. MPC executive board member Lee Sheng Chow, a blind national para athlete, said the revelation caught him by surprise. "This is news to me. We had had many meetings in the past, yet this was never brought

aside for the possible construction of MPC’s new headquarters (see accompanying story) Meanwhile, Sports Commissioner Datuk Yassin Salleh said MPC would be hauled up to explain the matter. "We were not privy to such information before but once this is reported to us or even published in the newspapers, we will surely investigate. "I don’t want to jump the gun but we need to know why such

a thing was done in the first place and who had consented to the deal." This latest controversy has been deemed a "double whammy" for the MPC, which was in the limelight earlier this month after several national para athletes cried foul when their monetary rewards were significantly "slashed". On June 16, The Paper That Cares front-paged a report on Malaysia's paralympic athletes who, despite finishing sixth out of 51 countries in last year's Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China, only received 30 per cent of what able-bodied athletes got in cash incentives. Special athletes used to earn RM80,000 for a gold medal, RM40,000 for silver and RM20,000 for bronze at the regional games but when the incentives were presented to them in April, the winners only received RM24,000 for gold, RM12,000 silver and RM6,000 bronze. The National Sports Council (NSC) clarified, however, that the para athletes would be better taken care of under an incentive scheme introduced this year.

Follow-up action vital, say groups

MALAYSIAN Paralympics Council (MPC) president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin admitted to having channelled RM4 million to Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd in 2008. However, he was quick to add it was for a good cause. "We were promised a plot of land by the government a couple of years ago but we were informed last year the land is actually a forest reserve and we would be given another suitable location. "We invested the money as we needed the cash to grow. We just can’t dump the money in fixed deposit as the interest rates are ridiculously low." Zainal admitted there was some form of a “deal" with regards to the RM4 million but declined to elaborate. He also did not mention the government agency that had promised the land. "Our members are well aware of this project. This is an internal matter which we plan to make public once we get the approval (on the land) from the government. The money is there, rest assured. In fact, it has grown." He did not specify the amount of money projected from the investment, but acknowledged it was obtained through donations and other MPC activities in the past. "Let this not be a situation where a good deed will be seen as bad. I assure you the money is there and has grown. This will be a starting point for our building committee. Four million ringgit is not enough to build a headquarters in Kuala Lumpur." When told several MPC members claimed they were unaware of the matter, Zainal said: "We have just obtained the approval from the Sports Commissioner’s office after rectifying our constitution two months ago and will be holding our annual general meeting soon. We will discuss this matter." Zainal said MPC had been struggling to find its "own place". It is renting an office block in Brickfields now. "We want our new place to be a symbol of Malaysian para athletics."

PARENTS' groups have welcomed the government’s move to monitor the body mass index (BMI) of schoolchildren but feel more needs to be done to effectively tackle obesity among the young ones. National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council (National PTA) president Assoc Prof Datuk Mohammad Ali Hassan urged the Education and Health Ministries to make a "thorough and concerted" effort if they want to tackle the problem. “We welcome the listing of the children’s BMI in the report books but the government must make sure there is proper follow-up," he told The

THE police are defending their Special Investigation Division (D9) team for storming into an apartment at Solaris Dutamas in Jalan Dutamas where a foreign tenant was suspected of being a terrorist. The Malay Mail reported yesterday that in the incident at 1am on June 19, a Palestinian-born United Arab Emirates (UAE) national was arrested mere hours after his Malaysian wife, having quarreled with him, told police he was a terrorist and armed with a gun. The allegation

proved to be false and the foreigner was released on June 26. He then absconded on July 1 without settling rent and other arrears. The apartment owner, 42-year-old businessman Yasni Mohamad Yusof, estimated his losses at RM21,600, comprising unpaid dues by the tenant and damage to his property and theft of certain items. Sentul district police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan (pic) said: "We were acting based on the tip-off from the foreigner's

Bersih brews in Taiwan Flyers handed out in Taipei stadium alerting planned rally on Saturday

WHILE thousands of football fans had their attentions glued to the TV screen as Malaysia took on Taiwan in a preWorld Cup qualifier match at the latter's home turf on Sunday night, another group was attracting a different kind of attention on the terraces at Taipei Municipal Stadium. A group of people, believed to be Malaysians, were distributing Bersih 2.0 flyers to spectators in the stadium after the half-time break. The flyers, written in Mandarin, allegedly urged members of the public to join them in a demonstration to be held at 2pm on Saturday. The Malay Mail was alerted to the development by a reader, who only wished to

be known as Raj. Raj, a flight attendant, was in the city enroute from Los Angeles. He and his colleagues had obtained tickets for the match, and were seated among the 500-odd Malaysian fans in the stadium. He said the match had just entered the second-half when he noticed some people distributing flyers. Raj said he thought the flyers were meant to promote a restaurant. However, he noticed that the flyers were not given out to the nonChinese. He then took a glance at one of the yellow flyers passed to a colleague. “I was taken aback when I saw that it had the Bersih

The Malay Mail yesterday contacted the Taiwanese embassy in KL on whether they were aware that the rally would take place in Taipei.

An embassy staff expressed surprise at the revelation but was unable to provide any information. Attempts to contact the Malaysian embassy in Taiwan were unsuccessful. A Facebook group titled Global Bersih 2.0 had claimed that rallies would be held at no less than 15 countries worldwide, including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others. In Malaysia, police had called on all parties not to demonstrate on Saturday, citing security concerns and warning that stern action will be taken against anyone involved.

Global Ikhwan not feeling the heat By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

GLOBAL Ikhwan Sdn Bhd, a multi-national business firm linked to the banned Al-Arqam movement, is unperturbed that it is being put on watch by the authorities for allegedly reviving the defunct movement. The Johor Islamic Religious Department had reportedly said it was monitoring the activities of Global Ikhwan and another group, Kumpulan Layar Bahtera, for purportedly spreading deviant Islamic teachings.

“The authorities can do as they please,” was the brief response from Fauziah Ariffin, a representative of Global Ikhwan and director of Ikhwan Catering and Restaurant. Fauziah, currently in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, was responding to a text message query from The Malay Mail. The coordinator of the infamous Obedient Wives Club did not reply when asked if there were any truth in the allegations, however, she referred The Malay Mail to an online article in Buletin Rakyat's website, in which Global Ikhwan head Hatijah Aam was interviewed. In t he ar t i cl e, Hatijah Aam, better known as “Ummu Jah”, said that Global Ikhwan had no interest in re v i v i ng t h e Al-Arqam movement as it would be of no benefit to the group. former Al-Arqam founder Ashaari Muhammad, who infamously claimed to his followers that he was a prophet. The Al-Arqam movement was banned by the Federal government in 1994 when the National Fatwa Council declared its teachings as deviant. Ashaari, affectionately known as “Abuya” to his followers, then set up Rufaqa’ Corporation Sdn Bhd in 1997, which was later closed by the authorities for allegedly recruiting new members to revive Ashaari’s teaching. He subsequently set up Global Ikhwan which today runs an assortment of businesses all over the world, from laundries and eateries to clinics and noodle manufacturing. Global Ikhwan entered the limelight when Hatijah formed the controversial Ikhwan Polygamy Club in 2009, and more recently, the Obedient Wives Club. The Obedient Wives Club caused a stir among the public when it declared that wives should be like “first class prostitutes” in serving their husband’s sexual desire.

Police brace for illegal rallies By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

THE authorities are bracing for various pockets of demonstrations around the city starting Thursday as supporters of the three rallies planned for Saturday start to arrive. T h e Ma l ay Mai l w a s informed that police are making contingency plans for the smaller demonstrations as intelligence revealed outstation supporters, especially from States which have their weekend on Friday and Saturday. Pe o p l e f a m i l i a r w i t h the matter said the police response will be based on existing laws and regulations. The Bersih 2.0 group — a coalition for free and fair elections — had called for a rally in the city on Saturday. In response, Umno Youth and Malay rights group Perkasa had announced their own rallies to counter the demonstration planned by Bersih. On various websites and social media outlets, Bersih activists had also announced their attention to hold demonstrations outside Malaysian missions at various foreign countries. Police had called on all parties not to demonstrate on Saturday, citing security concerns and that stern action would be taken against anyone involved. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail

Omar had been reported as saying that action would be taken against all those trying to organise the rallies, regardless of any statement or assumption made by others on police action. He said that if the rallies were to go ahead, it would jeopardise national peace and lead to chaos. On Sund ay, t he Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin made known his thoughts on the Bersih 2.0 proposed rally, saying that street demonstrations would bring more bad than good to the country. He said he had been following closely the developments concerning the planned rally and that he was confident the prime minister was capable of dealing with the situation.

The number of reported cases has substantially increased from 2009, where there were only 32. The illegal tapping of water is viewed as a serious offence and those with water-theft related information are asked to contact SPAN at 8317 9333/334/335.

the more lives will be saved in accidents," he said, adding that having seat belts in express and tour buses has long been an international safety standard in European and other countries. "Other safety measures should also be mandatory, such as speed limiters in which the accelerator pedal becomes inactive when a vehicle's speed surpasses a certain limit. In this country, only a small fraction of buses have built-in speed limiters."

Azhar also said all bus drivers should undergo annual programmes to improve their driving skills and safety awareness. Yesterday, The Malay Mail front-paged a report on the implementation of seat belts in express and tour buses by 2015 as part of the government's plans to commit to international safety standards. It was also reported that full implementation of higher quality standards of bus body struc-

tures in public service vehicles is gradually being carried out by the government. An industry source had told The Paper That Cares that safety aspects of automotive and commercial vehicles production were being augmented and enhanced as part of Malaysia’s commitment to implement the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) World Forum on Harmonisation of Motor Vehicles

Regulations (WP 29) for the transport sector. All these developments are in the wake of one of the nation’s worst bus crash tragedies, at Simpang Pulai near Ipoh, Perak last December, which resulted in the loss of 28 lives, mostly Thai tourists. Initial investigations showed the bus had undergone modifications to accommodate extra seats and this compromised passenger safety.

Bus construction industry needs overhaul COMPULSORY seat belts in buses is a commendable move, but there is a need to overhaul the entire bus construction industry, says Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. "The seat belt requirement may not give us the desired outcomes as the bus industry here faces more critical problems," he said, noting cases in which some bus companies have resorted to seat tampering (adding more seats) to maximise passenger load which may lead

to disastrous consequences. "Other problems are noncompliance with the bus' superstructure strength to withstand impact during collisions." He said bus operators should be made to adhere to safety standards comparable with petroleum haulers. "Companies that operate petroleum haulers ensure that their drivers maintain a very high standard of safe driving and that's because these vehicles carry a precious and dangerous commodity — petroleum. Shouldn't we place the same

emphasis on buses which carry human lives?" He said there is a need to transform the entire bus construction industry in Malaysia. "We need the involvement of many parties including the engineer who designs the bus, the manufacturer who constructs the bus' body and the officer who authorises the construction. "From our analysis, the capabilities of these experts here are still inadequate." He also said that since 2008, Miros, along with other organisations, advocated the imple-

mentation of the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) code of practice to bus companies. "SHE was made compulsory to bus operators as part of their permit requirements in 2010 by the previous Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and has since been taken up by the Land Public Tr a n s p o r t Commission (SPAD)."

Nod for PR1MA, the new affordable housing scheme By JOSEPH KAOS JR joejr@mmail.com.my

THE government’s new affordable housing scheme has been well-received by Klang Valley youths who are currently looking to buy their first homes. However, some feel the homes offered under the 1Malaysia People Housing Scheme (PR1MA) launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday, were too far from the city. Najib launched the first phase of the programme which involves the construction of 42,000 units of homes priced between RM150,000 and RM300,000, at 20 locations within the Klang Valley and Seremban. Among the Klang Valley locations for the first phase are Putrajaya, Bandar Tun Razak in Cheras, Cyberjaya and Putra Heights in Subang Jaya. “The programme looks

good, as I am looking for quality homes at affordable prices,” said graphic designer Jonathan Lian, 26, who is married and plans to have children soon. “There should be more options closer to the city. My workplace is in PJ and I commute by public transport, so locations like Putrajaya and Putra Heights are not convenient for me." Lian, whose household income totals RM4,000, said loans from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account and the recently-launched My First Home Scheme will help youths like himself to finance a house. Senior consultant Nevash Nair, 25, said he does not mind living far away from the city if there is efficient public transport and proper township planning.

“The government should ensure the new housing communities come with shops, schools, clinics and such for the convenience of residents," said Nevash, who is renting a place at Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong. Nevash, who earns around RM5,000 a month, said an affordable loan scheme should also be introduced alongside the affordable homes. “Most of my friends say they can’t buy a house because they can’t afford to keep up with the monthly instalments." IT executive Jonathan Cheah, 35, said the scheme is a big help for people like him who are struggling to get their first property at reasonably good locations. “I’m hoping to hear more on the financing options that will be introduced with this

DANIEL RADCLIFFE (pic) has revealed that he has given up drinking after becoming "reliant" on alcohol, the Irish Independent reports. The Harry Potter actor, 21, said he has not touched a drop of alcohol since August last year, when he realised that he was not suited to the party lifestyle. Daniel said he began to think that he should be living a "celebrity life" and became "a little bit" complacent while filming the 2009 Potter adventure The HalfBlood Prince. He told GQ: "I became so reliant on (alcohol) to enjoy stuff." He said of being teetotal: "I'm actually enjoying the fact that I can have a relationship with my friends where I'm really pleasant."

Rupert: Kiss with Emma an anticlimax RUPERT GRINT has confessed that his onscreen kiss with Emma Watson in the final instalment of the Harry Potter film series would be to be "a bit of an anticlimax" for viewers. Grint, 22, and Watson, 21, will be sharing a highly anticipated kiss in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two, to be released this month. But the actor said the moment itself is likely to prove quite underwhelming to fans who have been waiting 10 years to see the two get together, the Times of India reports. "That's going to be a bit of an anticlimax," Grint says, while describing the kiss as a "small, small moment". He was asked about the long build-up to the moment, which both actors, who are close friends, knew would eventually arrive.

A joint army, police force to be reckoned with By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my

TWO years after police and the army began collaborating on joint exercises, a command post exercise (CPE) was held at the Royal Malaysian Police College (RMPC) in Cheras yesterday. Officiating the launch were Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Datuk Seri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin. The CPE's main objective is for both forces to work together to maintain the country's national security and learn from each other, as well as to help when police manpower is shorthanded. "It's been two years now since police and the armed forces started working together and the

CPE programme has benefited both parties," said Ismail. "During the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide in 2008, both forces worked as a team and also built a temporary bridge for residents to move out." Ismail said the joint exercises create better understanding between the two parties. "Under the programme, police are able to use the armed forces' training facilities and this saves RM4 million over a five-year period. "We have many other ideas we plan to execute and some have already been started, such as joint patrols in KL, Selangor, Johor and Penang. "From the feedback received, police officers are enjoying the company of their new friends from the army," said Ismail, adding he enjoys his teh tarik sessions with Zulkifeli. Zulkifeli said army officers who retire early can now join the police force. "With the experience they already have, all the army officers need to do is undergo a short course to become police officers." ISMAIL: Police and army personnel getting along well

Singer full of remorse during public confession By LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my

Yi: Thought of taking his own life

"I'm sorry" was all Yi Jet Qi could muster in his first appearance in months. In a black T-shirt and jeans with large spectacles, the Taiwan-based Malaysian singer met with reporters for a Press conference in Taman Desa yesterday. It was his first public appearance since the controversy involving him stealing money from Penny Tai, another Malaysian singer and good friend of his, broke in February. Yi said after his confession he surrendered to the police, with Tai accompanying him. "I did something embarrassing. I wasn't even aware of my own irresponsible action. "It was like I was being blindfolded by some entity and was led to commit such a stupid mis-

deed." The 39-year-old, who was solemn throughout the 30-minute conference, said he faced the most pivotal moment in both his life and career. "I was diagnosed with depression and am still under medication. My doctor advised me to take a break from song writing. "When I write, all emotions pour in and I am reminded of the turbulent days. I lost myself and I made a huge mistake. It's something I can't even control myself from doing," he said. Relating the night he confessed to Tai, Yi said he called her around midnight, asking to meet. From his tone of voice, Tai, who was asleep at that time, felt something amiss and agreed. Yi then admitted to Tai he had withdrawn NT$300,000 (RM30,000) from her bank ac-

Rapper dares residents to report him again By JOE LEE and AIZAT SHARIF mmnews@mmail.com.my

A RAPPER from a wellknown hip hop group from the 90s, caught for close proximity on Sunday morning with a widow, challenged residents of the housing area to lodge another report as he defiantly returned to the house with his partner after the episode. A source told The Malay Mail that the raiding party, led by the imam of the Batu 10 mosque, as well as a representative of the mosque’s committee, was joined by officers of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS)

and police from the Batu 9 Cheras police station. In the incident, the rapper and the widow, who has two children, were said to have refused to open the door when the raiding party arrived at 4am. Entry was gained some two hours later, when the authorities were beginning their attempts to cut the grilles of the condominium unit upon receiving the permission of the ex-husband of the widow, who is reportedly the owner of the unit. The incident at the Langat

Jaya Condominium was said to have stemmed from complaints over the activities of the couple which were said to have been going on for some time. After the police report, the couple were said to have shown no remorse, and the brazen rapper even challenged residents to make another report as he continued to live in the same house with the widow. Residents of the condominium said they planned to stage another raid in response to the defiant couple.

Shamsul Yusof (pic) has gone one up on his father with his latest film KL Gangster recording a box office sale of some RM12 million. His father, Datuk Yusof Haslam, was the first producer to breach the RM6 million mark for his film Sembilu 2 in 1995. Now, Shamsul is proving to be a generous young man and plans to reward everyone involved in KL Gangster with a bonus. This was announced by his proud father on behalf of their company Skop Production Sdn Bhd. In an interview with The Malay Mail, Yusof said Shamsul would perform the Umrah if his previous film, Khurafat, exceeded RM8 million. It

As soon as we get back to Malaysia two weeks before Aidilfitri, we will organise a thanksgiving ceremony and breaking of fast at the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) complex," Yusof said. Since the news broke, she never mentioned to anyone that it was me. She never once blamed me. I felt guilty, especially after she blamed herself for failing to see through my problem. That's the Penny Tai I know. I don't think she's even human. To me, she's a godsent angel. I will never forget that. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting her." WIDE OPEN: The unguarded substation

RESIDENTS of Sunway Damansara can cease worrying about the missing gate at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) substation as it has been replaced. TNB sprung into action after being alerted of the missing gate at the substation in Jalan PJU 3/29 by Hotline last week.

LOCKED UP: The recently installed gate

In our June 30 report "Open invitation to danger", we highlighted residents' worry about the exposed entrance, possibly removed by metal thieves. A resident, WONG MAN SOON, had said the exposed substation was a potential hazard as it is next to Palm Spring Condominium.

"Children pass the area frequently and it is an open invitation for young ones to enter the site." In our report, a TNB spokesman had assured TNB officers had taken measurements of the entrance and will be placing a new gate at the location. On June 21, The Malay

Rocky road to flatness

Resident asked to pay to pave, council says they're private contractors TO have a road resurfaced is usually a good thing but not when it's only halfway done. JOYCE HA says recently, contractors paved the roads near her house in SS3, Petaling Jaya. However, on Jalan SS3/8, only one-third of the road was paved, leaving several potholes untouched. "Some of the contractors hounded me to pay them several hundred ringgit to pave the area outside my house and repair the potholes along the road," she says. "I'm not going to fork out a single sen. Why should I?" JOYCE says she wrote to the local council last month via their "Aduan" (complaints) channel but has not received an answer.

● A SPOKESMAN for the Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) engineering department says they have yet to start this year's road resurfacing project. She says a contractor had just been appointed and the job scheduled to commence next month. She says the council only resurfaces critical roads due to budget constraints. On the SS3 road, the spokesman says Tenaga Nasional Berhad's contrac-

tors had paved it partially for utility purposes. "Upon completing their job, the contractors will only resurface the area they dug, such as in Jalan SS3/8." She says despite that, the council has fixed the potholes on that road. On the matter of private contractors trying to charge residents, the spokesman says the council is not linked to them. She says the council's road paving efforts would include the entrance of residents' houses out of goodwill. "But if a house entrance is the only place that needs resurfacing, we are not obligated to do it as it does not fall under our purview." She advises residents not to be duped by contractors asking money for road works. "We will send a notice to each house if our contractors are working on the roads. The council does not charge residents."

UNEVEN: The jagged road before it was resurfaced

I WAS a caregiver for a patient there for some time and have seen it all. BANKS will spin all kinds of yarn and sweet talk people into thinking they are getting the credit card for free. But they are in for a surprise when charges such as government tax and annual fees are included in bank statements. My guess is, the banks do not want to lose their loyal customers. — shaktiman

I AM curious about the "procedures" to prevent the patient's "bed-ridden state". How does UMMC manage that? Maybe the public relations department of UMMC or even their doctors would care to share their ingenuity with other hospitals worldwide. After all, isn't that what UMMC is aiming to be, a world-class hospital? — Anonymous

IT is with great sadness Badan Warisan Malaysia records the passing of Tan Sri Stanley Jewkes (pic) on June 19, in Florida, US. Jewkes would have turned 98 this October. Jewkes served in the Public Works Department (PWD) until 1962, and continued throughout his life to speak fondly of his time working here. He established the Design and Research Branch of the PWD to ensure competent, efficient and cutting-edge engineering and architectural practices. He desig ne d St adium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and the Merdeka Park, a 10-acre park on the north side of the Merdeka Stadium, with its umbrella-shaped bandstand commonly known as “the mushroom” because of its shape, and the Merdeka Clock, a sundial incorporating the local mean time as well as the date in the zodiac calendar. In the commemorative programme for the opening of Stadium Merdeka on Aug 30, 1957, the late premier Tunku Abdul Rahman commended Jewkes for finishing the work on time. He said: "Its completion in record time is an achievement for which the engineers and contractors deserve abundant credit. I wish to thank them all, particularly Mr. S. E. Jewkes of the PWD, who spared no effort to ensure works was completed

by Merdeka Day and whose planning and engineering skill had produced such perfect results.” Designing Stadium Merdeka began on July 15, 1956, with work commencing on Sept 25. Using just a slide rule to do the drawings and engineering calculations, Jewkes made a total of 160 drawings outside of his regular office work. As soon as he completed a major design aspect or finished detailed work, he would hand the drawings over to an engineer. Jewkes was PWD director when he designed and built Stadium Negara (1962), adjacent to Stadium Merdeka and the Merdeka Park. He continued to refer to this site as an “acropolis” in the middle of the city. A multi-purpose indoor stadium to be used for exhibitions, conventions, indoor games, concerts and even ice rink-shows, Stadium Negara was built to accommodate over 10,000 people. An engineering feat of its time, with a 300-foot diameter column-free space, with an innovative concave suspended roof system with a central circular truss ring held in place by cables from a larger concentric truss ring system. Badan Warisan deputy president Laurence Loh said:

"Although I never met the man, I feel as if I know him intimately in the context of his creations, viz. Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara, having been associated with their conservation since 2003. By having to prepare the conservation plans for both the stadia, I had to study the two buildings in depth over many years, down to the most minute detail. I have walked along the corridors and through the spaces he created in search of a way to understand his thought processes. I have felt his presence in the architectural details, the muted colours, his use of art, his contemporary materials and his plans. I had the chance to study, close up, the way he designed his buildings to respond to the tropical climate and I have learnt many valuable lessons. He was way ahead of his time, a genius that walked on Malaysian soil and gave it places with a spirit of place and depth of memory." Jewkes graduated as an engineer from the Institute of Civil Engineers after which he became an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. He served under Her Majesty’s Home Guard, where he held several positions throughout

You have to do things yourself

I have yet to get a maid I am happy with. Half of them are ill-prepared for the work and some are not mentally or physically fit. The agencies will show you their biodata but when they arrive, you get something different. I have lost faith in most of these agencies as their agenda is just to make money. Now when their livelihood is threatened, they try to frighten us.

Licensed agencies are not reliable and many have suffered losses. It is better to DIY, which many of my friends are doing. At l e a s t , w e g e t w h o we want and not something else. Some even fly to Indonesia to interview maids and meet their families before making a decision. This ensures the maid is happy to serve their new employer with confidence.

Putting nation in jeopardy TAKE the lead and condemn the proposed street demonstration. The mass media must get together and highlight on their front pages the disaster and chaos that will follow such a situation. The leaders/organisers must understand and realise they are putting the nation in jeopardy by their actions. There is no such thing as a peaceful demonstration or rally on the streets. From past experiences, we all know how such events can turn ugly and cause disturbances to the innocent rakyat. Street demonstrations are

not for Malaysia. This has back-fired in several countries causing loss of life, destruction to property and interfering with people's livelihood. We must learn from them and live peacefully instead of creating tension and problems. If a d emonst r at i on is necessary, have it inside a hall or stadium and not on the streets. The majority of Malaysians hate unrest of any kind. We all want to live in a stable and peaceful country. Anandh

VETERAN academic writer and journalist Adibah Amin and former Bernama news editor Musa Scully received the highest recognition for their outstanding contributions to journalism in the country at the NPC-Naza Awards 2011 presentation at Hotel JW Marriot in Bukit Bintang last night. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak presented the

NPC-Ambank Media Legand Award to Adibah and the NPC-TM Lifetime Achievement Award to Musa. Both winners received RM10,000 and a plaque each. Adibah, 75, told The Malay Mail that her fondest memories in her career came from writing columns in The New Straits Times (NST) for 12 years. "What gave me the most joy

"Working at NST holds a lot of fond memories for me in particular," she said. NPC-TM Lifetime Achievement Award winner Musa Scully was equally proud on being recognised for his work. "But what pleases me even more is to see people who used to work with me and for me become successful in their careers," he said. Musa, 69, does not believe in slowing down with age. He still works as a sub-editor at an online portal. Musa said he began his career as a journalist for the Straits Times in 1962 and then went on to work for The Malay Mail for several years. He eventually joined Bernama when it was launched in 1968 and became their first chief reporter as

Thai military 'accepts' opposition win in polls THAILAND'S powerful military will respect a landslide election win by allies of Thaksin Shinawatra, who it toppled five years ago, the defence minister said yesterday, easing fears of another coup. Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra, a 44-year-old political novice now set to become the kingdom's first female premier, announced a coalition deal with four smaller parties to bolster her hold on power. The election and its aftermath is a major test of Thailand's ability to emerge from a long political crisis triggered by Thaksin's 2006 overthrow that last year saw the country's worst civil violence in decades. Thailand's outgoing defence minister, himself a retired general, said that the army accepted the election outcome, easing fears of fresh military intervention in a country that has seen almost as many coups as elections. Prince William 'crash lands' Sea King helicopter PRINCE WILLIAM splashed down on a Prince Edward Island lake yesterday in a massive Sea King helicopter for an emergency water landing drill, on the fifth day of a landmark Canadian tour with his wife Catherine. William, whose day job is a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot in Anglesey, Wales, was taking part in a "waterbirding" exercise midway through the British royal couple's official visit, after arriving for a private reception in nearby Charlottetown, capital of Prince Edward Island, on Sunday evening. The controlled landing procedure was developed in Canada in the event of engine failure while military helicopters scout for enemy submarines or during search and rescue operations. Italy queries Standard and Poor's ITALY'S securities market regulator (Consob) questioned officials from ratings agency Standard and Poor's (S&P) yesterday about the timing and sourcing of a statement on the country's austerity plans. A Consob spokesman said S&P representatives answered questions for some two hours on the timing of last week's statement, which sparked fresh fears over the future of heavily indebted Italy, and the sources it was based on. They will now submit more documents and the inquiry will continue, the spokesman added. The unprecedented decision to call in S&P came after the introduction of new European guidelines that allow regulators to question ratings agency moves, Consob said on Saturday. S&P on Friday warned — while the markets were still open — that attempts by Italy to correct its public finances faced "risks," a day after the government's adoption of a €47 billion (RM205b) austerity plan. — AFP LONDON

Quit-smoking drug may cause heart problems HEALTHY, middle-aged smokers who take Pfizer's Chantix or Champix, one of the most popular quit-smoking drugs on the market, have a higher risk of suffering heart attacks or other serious heart problems, a study disclosed yesterday. British and American scientists analysed 14 clinical trials of Champix, sold as Chantix in the US and known generically as varenicline, and found the likelihood of developing serious heart problems resulting in hospitalisation, disability or death was almost 72 per cent higher in patients taking the drug. The researchers urged US drug regulators, who have already issued warnings about Chantix's safety in certain patient groups, to take note of these new findings. "I think our new research shifts the risk-benefit profile of varenicline," said Sonal Singh of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who led the research and published it in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. — Reuters

16-year 'Potter' partnership ends HARRY POTTER author J.K. Rowling (pic) said yesterday she had ended her 16-year association with the literary agent who helped to launch the multi-million-selling series of books about the boy wizard. Christopher Little began working with Rowling in 1 9 9 5 , a lt hou g h it to ok until August 1996 to find a publisher for her first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Their partnership lasted through the seven-book s e r i e s , w h i ch s ol d 4 0 0 million copies and made Rowling into one of the richest women in the world. But just days before the final film based on the books hits the big screen, the author confirmed their working relationship had come to an end, without giving any further explanation. "We can conf i r m t h at J. K . Rowling has terminated her association with the Christopher Little Literar y Agency," said a statement from a public relations agency on Rowling's

behalf. "This was a painful decision, especially as Ms Rowling had actively sought a different outcome for some weeks. However, it was not taken without good reason and it finally became unavoidable." Har r y Pot te r and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the final film in the epic saga starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, has its world premiere in London on Thursday. Rowling laid down her pen, and Harr y's magic wand, when she finished the seventh book in 2007. But the author has yet to let go of her creation. Last month she unveiled an interactive website featuring new material about Potter's world, and an nou nc e d t hat h i s a d v e ntu re s would be sold as e-books for the first time. The free website, www.pottermore.com, will go live from July 31 for one million Potter fans who pass a special online challenge, and to the general public from October. — AFP

Radiohead tests China's controlled web OUTSPOKEN British rock group Radiohead, which has been critical of China's human rights record, appears to be testing the country's censored Internet by opening a Chinese microblog account. Tens of thousands of people have begun following a verified account in the name of the Oxford-based band, which was set up on Friday on Sina Weibo, the most popular microblog site in the country where censors block Twitter. "Testing the Weibo," reads the only message posted on the account. That message was forwarded by more than 10,000 people, drew nearly 4,200 comments and had attracted almost 60,000 followers by yesterday. Many Chinese Radiohead fans said they hoped the

account was a sign the band might be planning their first concert in mainland China. "I wish I could see you in my lifetime," one fan commented. However, a tour seems extremely unlikely in China, where Beijing must approve all bands before they perform. An official green light would be unlikely for Radiohead, w ho have pl aye d Tib et Freedom concerts and supported jailed democracy activist Liu Xiaobo, the winner of last year's Nobel Peace Prize. Chinese authorities have become even more cautious about allowing Western music acts to perform since Iceland's Bjork closed a 2008 show in Shanghai by shouting "Tibet!" at the end of her song "Declare Independence". — AFP

It had officially been declared "Lady Gaga Day" in her honour, with 6,000 people packed into an open air theatre on a humid night and another 40,000 watching on a huge screen outside. "I had such a wonderful time last night. I couldn't believe so many people came there," she told hundreds of eager reporters squeezed into the ballroom of a hotel in Taipei. Organisers had previous-

ly expected a turnout of 4,000 fans, known as "Little Monsters", at the gathering, which was part of a promotional tour of Taiwan for her new album Born This Way. "I played almost an hour and 20 minutes. Normally my concert was about two hours, so the performance last night was almost a full concert," Lady Gaga said, adding that she had sung nine songs rather than four. Violent book debate

New method reduces multiple-births risk in IVF

Israelis protest questioning of rabbis behind racist publication SOME 2,000 religious Jews demonstrated outside Israel's Supreme Court yesterday, protesting against the recent arrest of two leading rabbis who allegedly endorsed a racist book. In the past week, police have detained, questioned and released the two rabbis as part of an ongoing investigation into a book called The King's Torah, that justifies killing non-Jews under certain circumstances. The arrests have sparked violent protests and a raging debate about whether the rabbis are above the law and the limits of religious freedom of expression. "I have come here to bring the message that the laws of the Torah are above the laws" of the State, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, a controversial rabbi from the northern city of Safed, told media. Eliyahu outraged many people last year when he issued a religious ruling that said Jews

should not rent or sell property to Arabs. At yesterday's protest, several leading rabbis addressed the crowd from in front of a banner reading: "For the honour and independence of the Torah. Protesting against the arrest of the great rabbis." On the sidelines of the protest some were selling copies of the book, which has been banned for sale in Israel. Others wore stickers bearing the slogan: "The King's Torah — It's my code of ethics." But many also said they did not support the message of the book at all, but had come to support the rabbis. "I came because I am shocked that they arrested our rabbis," said Daniel Dannon, 19, a Yeshiva or seminary student. "But most of the people here are against this book which is an embarrassment and should never have been published." The King's Torah has stirred up controversy since its publication last year. In August,

its co-author settler rabbi Yosef Elitzur was arrested on suspicion of incitement to violence. But he was freed without charge days later after a court found that police had not followed proper procedure. The book reportedly says babies and children of Israel's enemies may be killed in certain circumstances since "it is clear that they will grow to harm us".

SWEDISH doctors yesterday presented a new method they say dramatically reduces the risk of multiple births from in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) . The technique would help doctors determine the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby through IVF, they said. At present, fertility clinics tend to transfer several embryos to the uterus to boost the chance of a live birth, but this often leads to multiple pregnancies. "There are other prediction models, but this is the first that differentiates between the chance of pregnancy if you transfer either one or two embryos and also calculates the risk of twins," Jan Holte of the Carl von Linne clinic in Uppsala told media. With this model, "when it is time for transferring embryos, if we see that the twin risk is too high, we only transfer one embryo and we freeze the others," he explained. Over four years since 2004, his clinic transferred 3,410 embryos. The model helped slash the rate of twins in IVF pregnancies from about 26 per cent in a preceding four-year period, to 1.9 per cent. — AFP

SO things are not looking too good in the office and all you could think of is an escape. At home, nothing much is happenning and staying in Kuala Lumpur for the entire weekend can just induce you to commit suicide. Outside, the traffic is not going to improve and you're stuck in a roundabout in your own mind. You do not have much time though, and you do not have the fund to 'run' that far. The solution is simple. If you have your own car, all you need to do is start the engine and drive south. The destination? Try Malacca. What? You don't think it's a good idea? Well, rest assured that you are in for a great ride. Think about it, if you have an X amount of money to spend outside the country, you might just get a so-so holiday with perhaps an average accommodation with that neither-herenor-there kind of experience. Chances are, the big bulk

The Majestic Malacca LOCATED in the Heritage Site of Malacca, this hotel features an outdoor pool and a spa. Its spacious rooms come with floor-to-ceiling windows and free WiFi. Situated along the banks of the Melaka River, The Majestic Malacca Hotel is one kilometre from A’Famosa. Fitted with wooden flooring, rooms at The Majestic Malacca feature marble bathrooms with a luxurious bathtub and rainshower. Comforts include a flat-screen TV and a minibar.

Guests can exercise in the hotel’s fitness centre or relax with a massage at the Spa Village Malacca. The hotel’s library offers a quiet spot for reading. Local specialities such as Nyonya cuisine are featured at Majestic Malacca Hotel’s The Mansion Restaurant. It might be a little pricey for some, but the experience is worth every sen. Right in front of the entrance is the Malacca river, and across it is Kampung Morten (it was featured in Entrapment, the movie that stars Catherine Zeta Jones

and Sean Connery). Yes, from The Majestic, you can also catch a boat to enjoy Malacca by river (day and night).

Casa Del Rio IF you take the boat ride from The Majestic area heading towards the popular Jonkers and Heeren area, you're definitely not going to miss this brand new boutique hotel called Casa del Rio. It is the only hotel located directly on the banks of the stately Melaka River. Casa del Rio, Spanish for 'Home by the River', is, as the Press release describes it, “a mansion of opulence” ideally located on Jalan Kota Laksamana, only a twominute walk from the popular Jonkers Walk and the heritage attractions of Malacca. Casa del Rio is the newest addition to The Boutique Collection by HPL Hotels and Resorts (the company also manages the Hard Rock Hotels and Concorde Ho-

tels). This is a perfect getaway for everyone – in particular busy working executives (especially those with 'issues' at the office), families and groups of friends looking for a peaceful sanctuary to call their ‘home away from home’. The hotel boasts a buildup of 66 guest rooms and suites, split level bedrooms and private balconies; all overlooking the Melaka River. You know what? Hard Rock Cafe is also expected to be opened in Malacca within the next couple of years and the site is also pretty near Casa del Rio. penchant for nostalgia. You should also be reminded that it has been 600 years since the Portugese took over Malacca (1,511 to be exact), and your trip might also be a great way to re-acquaint yourself with a place that is seen as the beginning of so many things. If you've never been to that historical State (where everything started), you'd definitely get the kick out of discovering all the things that you might not get by just reading your geography or history book. As well-travelled people would tell you, it is not really about the destination, but the experience and the entire journey that might just make all the difference. Anyway, it takes less than half an hour to get to Malacca, and if you do not intend to drive, there's always the bus and the taxi. Then decide on the right place for you to stay. The X amount that might have been spent on flight ticket, could now

be used to check in at among the most luxurious places in Malacca. Once you are settled, you can walk, drive, try the boat ride and just about anything that you'd do when you're travelling elsewhere. With the Malacca Government efforts to create a more conducive environment for tourists and travellers, you're bound to be greeted with pleasant surprises. By the way, excavations are still taking place in some parts of the city and you might just be witness to new discoveries. Food? Well, you'd be mad if you think that Malacca has nothing much to offer. If you love mingling with the crowd, enjoy the night market at Jonker's Walk and you'd definitely feel uplifted. Malacca's night life is very much alive and kicking too. Still, let's find you a nice place to stay first. Here are a few suggestions (these places are currently among the hotspots for many foreigners too):

The Stable THIS might be one of the best kept secrets of Malacca. The Stable is yet another sanctuary in the hub of Malacca’s historical precinct, between Heeren Street, once a narrow street filled with wealthy colonial residences and the famous Jonker Street. The Stable is a smart, witty and charming reinvention of what used to be a horse stable (built during the 16th century Dutch occupation of Malacca). ORIGINALLY built in 1882, this historic Peranakan house has been renovated and is now one of the most popular hotels in the Malacca area. The hotel houses elegant rooms and is located on Hang Jebat Street, which is renowned for its antiques and great restaurants. Each room is spacious and comfortable with all the neccessary amenities. It features Helonica Garden Café which is perfect for sipping afternoon tea and the main restaurant Galeri, serving fine international and local dishes as well as imported wine. Hotel Puri Melaka features a Spa Centre which is located in the grounds of the hotel and is a great way to relax and pamper yourself after a long day. The hotel is a restored Peranakan house which once belonged to the decendants of an eminent philanthropist and rubber plantation owner, Tan Kim Seng. Extending 100 metres long, its distinct characteristics are its beautiful and intricately decorated façade and the impressive length of the house. Located in the heart of Malacca’s UNESCO World Heritage site, the 1941 pre-war art deco building has been restored into a stylish abode epitomising a new luxury. It is smart, pared down and tampered with healthy dose of wit and charm while maintaining its old world quaintness. Deeply flavourful, fragrant dish IF you are wondering what best describes the Ayam Serai Wangi, the latest sensation to arrive at The Chicken Rice Shop, imagine a dish which fits right smack in between the Ayam Masak Merah and Rendang Ayam. The dish created by renowned chef, Datuk Ismail Ahmad (Chef Ismail) encapsulates the aroma and flavours of lemongrass infused with ginger roots and spices. “I was inspired to use serai or lemongrass as it is a widely used ingredient in many Malaysian dishes and many enjoy the unique flavour and fragrance it brings to a meal. I feel that customers would enjoy this new offering, which is made using a number of traditional Malay spices and quality ingredients,” Chef Ismail said. Such strong flavours are

By Eena Houzyama eena@mmail.com.my best accompanied with the simple yet tasty chicken rice, and served with a side dish of tofu with oyster sauce, soup of the day and perhaps some vegetables of your choice. But whether you are eating for one, two or as a family of four, be assured that The Chicken Rice Shop offers

customers a variety of meal packages to choose from. For those curious to know how long it took Chef Ismail to create the Ayam Serai Wangi, well, he admitted of having put the dish through multiple stages of tasting to ensure the best quality is presented to customers. “Quality control is very important in order to ensure the best taste possible, so the dish went through a number of trials and quality testings before I was fully satisfied with the taste,” he said. The Ayam Serai Wangi promotion will be available at your nearest The Chicken Rice Shop till end of July.

Operating in a market, where people most essentially want faster, slimmer and more powerful mobile devices, the Samsung’s GALAXY S II has become the most anticipated smartphone by far. The build up to its arrival has far superseded that of pop culture, its icons and the pop music in itself. The Samsung GALAXY S II has, even before making its official footing, established a culture — creating a desire for consumers to be part of the larger Samsung GALAXY S II race.

The expectation of its arrival in Malaysia has been long awaited; as global conversations of its features, style and iconic representation is vast and extensive on the World Wide Web. The few fortunate enough to review this second coming have sung its praises as “the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might just be the best smartphone to date.” Around the world, this telephonic phenomenon garnered over three million pre-orders within just a onemonth period. At home in Korea, the launch of the Samsung GALAXY S II exceeded expectations queues in the thousands from early in the morning, of excited consumers waiting to be part of the Samsung

GALAXY S II culture, flooded most major Samsung retail outlets, causing more buzz than anticipated. But what is it that puts this android in such high demand, with amazing reviews from all around the world? The Samsung GALAXY S II is purported to be the fastest android ever released. Pumping at the heart of this communications beast pulses a dual-core-processing powering the Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform, enhancing the users rich multimedia and data communication features. The ultra clear screen is the next-generation SuperAMOLED-Plus, made from Corning’s Gorilla Glass which is damage-resistant, environmentally friendly and super responsive to the touch of the

finger. Not only is the Samsung GALAXY S II the fastest and clearest smartphone ever, it is also the slimmest and lightest ever. The Samsung GALAXY S II proves that now, where smartphones are concerned, you don’t have to be a ‘trekkie’ or a ‘techie’ to be this ‘trendy’. With a user-friendly interface, high powered speed and crystal clear images all packaged in lightweight yet super strong housing, there is a little wonder why this gadget has become the talk of the town. The Malay Mail Tuesday 5 JUly, 2011

It's in the name By Eena Houzyama eena@mmail.com.my TITLE: Can We Use Allah in the Bible? — A Quranic Perspective AUTHOR: Anas Zubedy PUBLISHER: Zubedy (M) Sdn Bhd RATING: 3/5 WHEN one talks about God, there is always a religious sensitivity that comes along with the term. However, this book explores the notion of using the term 'Allah' within the Bible and how it is ultimately the best term to refer to God. Many strongly religious

Muslims may not agree with the use of the term within any other religious

books. However, Zubedy takes into consideration all various reasons which support the use of 'Allah' in describing God. Not only taking readers on a journey to understand the various religions and races in Malaysia, the writer also explains the essence of Islam as a religion and the truth which the Quran speaks of God and Muslims. If you are curious to find out what claims this author makes, read the book with an open mind and be prepared to disagree. As with everything in life, to each his own opinion.

It all started with a spook Title: The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide Author: Stephenie Meyer

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company Ratings: 5/10 IF you like vampire's myths and legends, even if you've not bitten into the Twilight craze, you will find this book an interesting read. The book starts with a 65page interview with Stephenie Meyer, conducted by author Shannon Hale. The chat between two author friends in Q&A format tells more about Mayer, how it all started, her inspirations and more. You might feel like writing your own bestseller after reading this chapter.

sudoku

The book also tells the background stories of the Cullens. Unfortunately, much of it you already know from the movies. However, fans of the fanged ones can get the chill out of reading about the other vampire biographies of the Volturi, the Denalis, the Romanians, the Egyptians, the Amazons and the Nomads. The book is a good companion to your Twilight saga. For those who are curious but not at all crazy about the series, this book has enough information for you to pose as a Twilight fan, although God knows why you'd want to do that. — By SHUHAI-

Title: The Disappearing Spoon Author: Sam Kean Publisher: Little, Brown and Company Rating: 4/10 IN contrast to its rather simplistic title, The Disappearing Spoon consists of deep tales of “madness, love and history of the world” revolving around the periodic table of elements. Comprising five different parts, the first gives an orientation to the whole book, going from each element column by column and row by row, before moving on to deeper, more complex details of elements — including the history, theories and bag of tricks each element is attached to. While Kean portrays the well-known period table using a cast of characters with stories and illustrations highlighting the physical world, it is not something that is easy to decipher — unless of course one is a scientist or has an affinity with the world of rubidium, europium or xenon. The Disappearing Spoon is not a book one can get into quickly, as it requires time and even more, an interest in science and elements in the periodic table. — By Anu Venugopal

The FA of Penang will be lodging a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission against the team's management — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR

Blues exposure for youngsters

PROEVENTS chief executive officer Julian Kam (pic) dropped the biggest hint yet that Chelsea may not take the field against Malaysia's strongest, or widely known as "Raja's boys". Chelsea fans should not fret as the English Premier League side will still play at the National Stadium on July 21. Their opponents are likely to be the national Under-23 side coached by Ong Kim Swee.

"We (ProEvents) have had a meeting with FA of Malaysia and national coach K. Rajagobal and concluded we will take the nation's best interest into consideration," said Julian. "We have a squad of 30-40 players. This match could be a chance for the younger players in the team to gain exposure." For those who have been following our national team closely, such a hint is not a surprise. Malaysia's two-legged victory over Taiwan on Sunday meant they will play Singapore in Round 2 on July 23. It is unlikely Rajagopal will risk any of his players for an exhibition match just two days earlier. As a result, we could see our Olympic squad take the field against Chelsea. ProEvents are also the tour promoters for Arsenal's and Liverpool's visit to Asia. Our national senior team would probably be given a run-out against the two English giants on July 13 and July 16 respectively.

Celcom look to increase appreciation for national team By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

IN 1982, The Malay Mail took a giant step towards winning the hearts of local football fans. Prodded by a reader, The Paper That Cares started a drive to collect RM1 from each willing citizen to pay for more live telecasts of the World Cup matches in Spain. The People's Live Telecast Fund (PLTF) was set up with the aim of collecting at least RM60,000 for one "live" telecast and this had to be done quickly. Each day, The Malay Mail listed the names of all new donors and their contributions, and they included the King and the Prime Minister then! P LT F r e a c h e d p a s t RM300,000, enough to pay for four "live" World Cup 1982 telecasts, specifically on June 29 (England vs Germany, the score was a boring 0-0), July 5 (Soviet

There is another facility just a stone's throw away — the 3C Complex. 3C stands for C hi ldren Cre at iv it y Center and is managed by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ). There are activities at 3C almost every weekend, which are all listed on its Facebook page (Kompleks Tiga C). There are several restaurants and cafes in the area. The owners of the two-storey mall are planning to set up another establishment nearer Kuala Lumpur soon. If badminton, tennis or squash isn’t your thing, SportsDirect.com also has a wide selection of camping, fishing and trekking equipment for the adventurous few. Golf lovers can take a look at some of the latest clubs at MST Golf Plaza located within. Subang residents have a lot happening at their doorstep. It is high time they make full use of the facilities and become a more healthy community.

After the World Cup, a fifth "live" telecast of the Fifa World All-Star charity match — in aid of Unicef — on Aug 7 in the United States was shown. And on those glorious nights, the pride-inducing phrase Ditaja oleh Rakyat Malaysia (Sponsored by the people of Malaysia) was flashed, and announced, over RTM. Due to the intense interest shown by Malaysians in 1982, the live telecasts of the World Cups in 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002 were all sponsored by the corporate sector and Malaysians no longer had to

contribute a single sen. That stunning deed, which saw Malaysians from all walks of life coming together, was recalled by Celcom CEO Datuk Sri Shazalli Ramly when the tele-communications giant launched their "Who Will Win" campaign yesterday, in conjunction with the Arsenal and Chelsea Asia Tour 2011. "We want to do what The Malay Mail did. This campaign was made possible by Celcom, sponsored by the people," said Shazalli. Shazalli pointed out "sponsored" did not mean cash in this context. "It is passion," he stressed. "I hope we can succeed in instilling the confidence of the public in our national football team."

Under the campaign, Celcom will host a mobile voting challenge for customers to be part of the best events in the country. The campaign kicks off with the tour of the two English Premier League clubs. "We would be giving customers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and the best seats in town. All they have to do is participate in the interactive activities offered by Celcom," added Shazalli. Celcom will be looking to create an awareness about our national team. "Look at the successes of our national footballers in the Olympics and World Cup qualifiers. We must get behind them and motivate the players further."

Homesickness hits Lai Kwan

NATIONAL swimmer Chui Lai Kwan may be concentrating on her preparations for the World Championships later this month but she admits to being home sick. The 21-year-old only visits her hometown in Sandakan, Sabah twice or thrice in a year. "My family are all there. I miss spending time with them," said Lai Kwan. S h e admitted the preparations

for the championships and her studies would be much easier if her family were close but insisted this is a sacrifice she must make. The national 50m freestyle record holder dismissed having any pressure in the build to the world meet in Shanghai. "I've been to the C o m m o nw e a l t h G a m e s before. Although it is not as massive as this (World Championships), it was still a big stage for me then," she added. "It was a good experience. I will condition my mind the same way

I did for the Commonwealth Games." It was at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games that Lai Kwan recorded a new national record and her personal best. She clocked 26.03s in the 50m freestyle. At the Guangzhou Asian Games that followed, she recorded 26.08s. Both her times were below the Olympics invitational qualifying mark of 26.15s. She is not keen to rest on her laurels as she hopes to swim below the Olympics automatic qualification of 25.27s. "Hopefully swimming with world class swimmers can push me to go faster," Lai Kwan concluded. Wozniacki stays on top despite failure

DENMARK'S Caroline Wozniacki (pic) remains on top of the women's singles rankings, which were released yesterday, in spite of her failure once again to land a Grand Slam title. The 20-year-old has now spent 38 weeks in the No. 1 position but has only ever reached one Grand Slam final — the US Open in 2009 — and was knocked out in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Petra Kvitova's reward for winning Wimbledon was a move up one place to seven in the world, while the woman she beat in the final, Maria Sharapova, also edges up one place to No. 5. French Open champion Li Na slips two places to No. 6. The biggest mover in the women's rankings was German Sabine Lisicki, a wildcard entry at Wimbledon where she went

on to lose to Sharapova in the semifinals. Lisicki, who had reached 22 in the world before an ankle injury interrupted her progress last year, moved up from No. 62 to 27. Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic was confirmed as the new world No. 1 when the ATP rankings were released. Djokovic, who beat Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final, was already guaranteed to move ahead of the Spaniard following the Serb's semifinal defeat of Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga. It ends Nadal's 56-week rein since he took over from Roger Federer on June 7, 2010. Not since Andy Roddick in the week of Jan 26, 2004 has anyone other than Nadal or Federer been ranked No. 1. "This is an amazing achievement to get to the top spot, especially with rivals such as Rafa and Roger," said Djokovic. "They made me work so hard and made me improve every day. There are no words to express how good they are but I always thought that I could become No. 1 one day. Both the belief and the hard work took me there." It is the natural culmination of an extraordinary first half of the year for Djokovic who has now won 48 of 49 matches in 2011 and claimed eight titles, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon. At 24 years, 1 month, 12 days, Djokovic is the 25th player since the rankings began in 1973 to hold the No. 1 position and the first Serb to do so. — AFP

KUALA LUMPUR: extreme sports

Feel the excitement of surfing with the wind

WINDSURFING is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a board usually two to four metres long, powered by the orthogonal effect of the wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and comprises a mast, wishbone boom and sail. The sail area ranges from less than 3m2 to more than 12m2 depending on the conditions, the skill of the sailor and the type of windsurfing being undertaken. When the wind gets above 8-10 knots (typically 15 knots+ for recreational equipment) the board ceases to move through the water and instead planes on top of the water, skimming over the surface at much higher speeds. To make the most of planing conditions, the board needs to be smaller and can dispense with the centreboard as sufficient lift and lateral resistance are provided by the fin (or combination of fins). When planing, jibing is achieved via shifting the rig and engaging one of the rails (edges) of the board which is referred to as carving. Windsurf boards can also tack like a sail boat. Though windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal planing conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots. Beginners must develop

their balance and core stability, acquire a basic understanding of sailing theory, and learn a few techniques before they can progress from board sailing to windsurfing. Initial lessons can be taken with a windsurfing school, which exist in reasonable numbers in most countries. With coaching and favorable conditions, the basic skills of sailing, steering, and turning can be learned within a few hours. Competence in the sport and master y of more advanced manoeuvres such as planing, carve gybing (turning downwind at speed), water starting, ju mpi ng , and more advanced moves can require more practice. In Malaysia, there are various location available for windsurfing. To d a y, t h e windsurfers sail at Putrajaya, Port Klang, Penang, Johor Baru, Port Dickson, as well as Kuantan. Lessons are availa b l e throughout these locations. More information is available at http://www. oxbold.com/windsurfing-malaysia. htm.

Evergreen Elizaga makes his point THEY say you have to be a little crazy to be a goalkeeper — but Ecuador's veteran shot-stopper Marcelo Elizaga drove Paraguay mad with his stellar showing in Sunday's goalless draw at Santa Fe. Elizaga, a 39-year-old from the Argentine city of Moron, is a latecomer to the international stage having only made his debut for his adopted country at the 2007 Copa. But Sunday saw him leaping about like a man a decade younger as he denied Edgar Barreto, Nestor Ortigoza and Roque Santa Cruz, whose header shortly after the interval had goal written all over it until Elizaga flung himself to turn the effort away. His saves had reporters comparing him with some of the alltime greats, not least Poland's 1970s star Jan Tomaszewski — whom former Derby and Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough once famously called a "clown" — only to see the keeper deny England a place in the World Cup finals. Appropriately enough, Elizaga, who plays for Deportivo Quito, is nicknamed El Polaco (the Pole). Others know him as El Muro (The Wall). — AFP

Media slam 'Selecao' as Chavez salutes Venezuelans

NATIONAL media laid into five-time world champions Brazil this morning after the Selecao made a hash of their first Copa America pool match, drawing 0-0 with rank outsiders Venezuela. Although Brazil, on a hattrick of wins in the continental tournament, would have to make a similar mess of upcoming games against Paraguay and Ecuador to miss out on a quarterfinal place, their poor showing enraged the Press. Worse still, it did not escape the country's scribes that Brazil's women have been performing rather better at the women's World Cup in Germany, where the Samba Girls have already reached the last eight with something to spare. "The men's team turned in a ridiculous performance against the Venezuelans and the players left the pitch shame-faced after the 0-0 draw," stormed O Globo daily in a leader article. "Neymar, Ganso, Pato, Robinho — they all played badly," the paper moaned. "At least we have Marta," O Globo added, in a reference to

the women's star striker who has been on the rampage at their event in Germany. The paper added in an aside that the Brazilian game appeared to be going to the dogs — an ironic reference to a canine pitch invasion during the match. The dog ran at one point to the Venezuelan six yard box — about the closest anyone got to the minnows' goal all afternoon — before trudging off. "Zero inspiration" was how Folha de Sao Paulo daily saw the Brazilian showing. "The Brazilian team failed its first official test under coach Mano Menezes — and left the stadium to a chorus of boos." O Estado de Sao Paulo said the team lacked a cutting edge. "They lacked attacki n g o o mp h . T h e revamping of Brazil disappointed," the paper commented in allusion to a hoped-for new dawn under Menezes, who replaced Dunga after last year's World Cup. O Estado said the dog's appearance summed

things up. "When the most important moment of a football match is the entrance of a dog onto the pitch to milk the applause of fans then that gives you an idea of the quality of the match," the paper commented. Lance sports daily, noting that Venezuela are nicknamed the Vinotinto — red wine in Spanish, owing to their burgundy kit — said: "Brazil tasted a bitter red and disappointed." Conversely, the Venezuelan Press were elated at their team's showing. "A golden point," chorused El Nacional and El Universal, while Ultimas Noticias

was fulsome in its praise. "The Vinotinto really gave us something to enjoy," the paper said. President Hugo Chavez, making a surprise return home after surgery in Cuba to remove a cancerous tumour, also got in on the act via the new media, using his Twitter account to praise the players. "What a tremendous showing by the Vinotinto! How proud we are of you boys! My best wishes to our coach Cesar Farias and to all of you," Chavez tweeted. — AFP MATCH HIGHLIGHT: A dog invades the pitch — AFPpic

This is our time, warn Brazilians ing hard and our objective is to be world champions for the first time." But despite having one group game left against Equatorial Guinea the Samba Girls' eyes are already on the final eight where they will face either the United States, the world's top team, or fifth-ranked Sweden. Captain Aline, 29, said: "The United States are very strong and physically very good. Sweden are also very strong, they have extraordinary technical qualities and very fast players. "But we're a team who are very strong, disciplined, focused and who worked well marking (Sunday). It's all the fruit of hard work paying off," she added. The heartbreak of four years, notably a painful 2-0 final defeat to Germany, remains raw. "We often talk about going so close four years ago," said midfielder Maurine, who plays with Marta at the Western New York Flash.

"Now we are looking for this to be our time and are working hard towards our goal." Marta said: "Our quarterfinal rivals, Sweden or the United States, will have a lot of problems even if they're strong teams because we're ready and we've come here to be world champions." Despite praising Marta's "genius" Brazil coach Kleiton Lima s a i d that only a team effort would suffice. "Brazil play with eleven, all the players strive. She (Marta) plays in the final line of attack and for that reason she is the one in charge to finishing off, but the momentum comes from elsewhere." — AFP

INTER MILAN defender Maicon (pic) has hinted he could be set to move to Real Madrid, claiming he will speak about a transfer after the Copa America. Maicon, 29, has been attracting the attention of the Spanish giants for some time and almost made a €35m (RM152.6m) move to the Bernabeu last season but negotiations fell through. However, with his contract up at the end of the coming season, the Brazilian has insisted he is happy in Italy for the time being, but that he has something to say about Madrid. "I am happy at Inter, but we will speak about Real Madrid and Inter after the Copa. I want to win a trophy with Brazil and this is my only objective right now," he said.

For veteran Formiga, playing her fifth World Cup, it is finally time for the South Americans to lift the title. The 33-year-old was on the team that finished runners-up to Germany four years ago and lost the past two Olympic titles to the United States. "It's been a long road, we can't rest and can't let up, we have to continue working hard, like we came here to do, and trusting that we can continue eliminating our rivals," said Formiga. ridiculous: Brazil look sluggish against Venezuela — AFPpic

BRAZIL striking duo Alexandre Pato and Neymar blamed their side's lack of inspiration in front of goal for the disappointing 0-0 draw with Venezuela in their opening Group B match at Estadio Unico yesterday. The Brazilians were highly favoured to win but had just two clear chances to score throughout the game and failed to capitalise on both occasions. Pato, who crashed the ball against the bar in the first-half, said he and his teammates must move on. "I tried, but unfortunately the ball hit the woodwork. The game did not go as we expected. Now we have to forget about this game," said the AC Milan man. Neymar, meanwhile, admitted they will have to work on improving their effectiveness in attack ahead of the next match against Paraguay. "This was a good game and our team did very well. We have to work more on our finishing. We want to win, we always do. The goal did not come, but we will work this week for them to come," said the 19-year-old Santos

striker. Defender Thiago Silva lamented Venezuela's defensive approach to the game and added his side should have played wider. "We apologise, because if we had scored in the first-half, the game would have been different. Against teams who play so closed, it is hard to play in the middle, we should have played more on the wings to find more space," he said. Liverpool midfielder Lucas. meanwhile, believes Brazil were in the driving seat. "We had control of the match, for the most part, we did not let them create a lot of chances," he said. "We had that ball which the defender cleared off the line and Pato's shot against the woodwork. In the secondhalf, we committed more mistakes. Now, we have to keep on working in the next matches to play with ball possession and create more chances." However, defender Andre Santos lamented his teammates' poor finishing. "The team created a lot of chances, it was a shame that we were not able to score and win the match. The pitch was bad and

it hurt us a little bit, but we can't use that as an excuse. We have to do some better finishing," he said. Disappointed coach Mano Menezes said his players were predictable. However, he is confident they will learn from this game in order to prepare for the last two group matches. "The result was bad, because we played better than Venezuela. We had the control and the initiative of the match, but we lacked clarity in some choices, mainly to find players in the finishing moments," he said. "We were too obvious. The ball got to the players who were wide, but they were too far away from Pato and the play could not flow. That is something we have to work on during the week." He also blamed the poor condition of the pitch for the slow pace of the game, but underlined that was not the reason his side did not win. "It looks to me the pitch hindered faster play and play of more quality. However, that is not our problem. We have to look over our performance and correct our problems," he said.

Paraguay not consistent enough, says Martino

FANCIED Paraguay showed "the best and worst" in the 0-0 draw with Ecuador in their opening Group B match yesterday. So says their coach Gerardo Martino (pic). "The first 20 to 25 minutes, Paraguay were great. We could have capitalised on the advantage then but in the end of the first-half we saw the worst and we lose the possession of the ball, did not press as we did at the beginning," he said. "After the break, we controlled the game and created several scoring opportunities, and this pleased me," he said. Then Martino revealed he will not change the first-11 who played yesterday for the tough match against Brazil

on Saturday. The Paraguayans, who made the World Cup quarterfinals in South Africa last year, had most of the scoring chances against Ecuador but just failed to break through in an end-to-end clash which was exciting but lacked finishing.

Argentine supremo Grondona backs Messi

ARGENTINIAN FA president Julio Grondona defended Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi (pic) in the wake of Argentina's disappointing 1-1 draw with Bolivia in their opening Group A match last Saturday. Messi often faces criticism that he fails to reproduce his fantastic Barca form when wearing the national jersey

but Grondona feels the Ballon d'Or winner is not to blame for their poor start to the tournament where they are gunning for a record 15th title. "Messi never puts in a bad game. Those who are surrounding him are the ones who should be blamed. He starts to drop deep to look for the ball because he doesn't get it from his teammates," Gron-

dona told Radio Del Plata. Grondona went on to discuss Argentina's chances at the tournament and insists the team can bounce back from the draw against Bolivia. "I still have hope. I wouldn't have liked a scoreless draw, but 1-1 is not bad. We played with our heart. Everything is very even in football these

days. It's difficult to play your first match against a team who have nothing to lose," he said. Argentina face a tricky task against Colombia in their second match on Thursday (8.45am). The Colombians, led by ace striker Radamel Falcao, defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in their opening match.

Family first for Tevez LONDON: Football/ PREMIER LEAGUE

Striker says he must quit Man City to spend time with children

ARGENTINA striker Carlos “the Apache” Tevez has confirmed Manchester City’s worst fears by saying he must leave the club to spend more time with his children, according to an interview with Britain’s Daily Mail. City captain Tevez led the north-west side to FA Cup glory and qualification for the Champions League last season but all the while did so while living apart from his young daughters. He is currently playing for Argentina in the Copa America but, in a statement published on the Mail’s website yesterday, Tevez said: “It is with great regret that I have to inform Manchester City of my wish to leave the club. “I would like to state that

I have great respect for the club, their supporters and the owner, Sheikh Mansoor, who has been nothing other than respectful to me. “I hope that the people understand the difficult circumstances I have been living under the past 12 months, in regards to my family. “Living without my children in Manchester has been incredibly challenging for me. Everything I do, I do for my daughters, Katie and Florencia. I need to be closer to them and to spend more time with them.” Tevez’s daughters currently live with their mother, Tevez’s estranged partner Vanesa, in Buenos Aires. “I need them to be happy because my life is about

them now. I need to be in a place where they can adapt. “Being captain of Manchester City, qualifying for the Champions League, winning the FA Cup and finishing as top-scorer last season has made me very proud. “I hope that most of the City fans will understand that I have given them my all on the pitch and that my dedication to the City cause has been 100 per cent on the pitch.” Tevez added: “I have no doubt that the players and management of City will achieve great success in the future.” It is understood Vanesa and the children struggled to settle in Manchester and returned to Argentina. Tevez, in an interview with

the Mail in Buenos Aires, said: “It is great being here but it is going to be even more difficult to go back now. “It’s great now, enjoying spending time with my family but it will be tough to go back. Being back here means I can cuddle my daughters. It’s a difficult situation when I’m not here.” City manager Roberto Mancini has repeatedly insisted that Tevez, who previously played for the club’s local rivals Manchester United, will stay at Eastlands. The club’s FA Cup final win against Stoke gave City their first major piece of silverware in 35 years. — AFP

Thousands greet homecoming hero Djokovic

TENS of thousands of people gathered in front of the Serbian parliament here this morning to greet Novak Djokovic (pic) after he won his first Wimbledon crown and became the new world No. 1. Mostly young people filled Nikola Pasic Square, carring Serbian flags and

placards reading “Nole we love you” and “Nole the king!,” referring to Djokovic’s nickname. Private television channel B92 showed footage of an open-top bus with Djokovic and his team aboard on the way from Belgrade airport to the city centre.

The bus was forced to slow down as the highway was crowded by cars honking their horns while thousands of people cheered him along the way. The double-decker, escorted by a dozen police vehicles, passed on its way through the main Terazije square amid a

carnival atmosphere. The culmination saw a thrilled and smiling Djokovic appear on a stage set in front of the parliament, carring the Wimbledon trophy, where the ecstatic crowd gave him a rapturous reception. “He is the pride of Serbia and Serbian people,” said

a teenage girl, who came for the occasion from the town of Novi Sad, some 80 kilometres north of Belgrade. “Lucky is the mother that gave birth to such a hard-working and gifted boy,” said Milorad Veselinovic, a man in his fifties. — AFP
