Residents arrest cable thieves
THEY thought they could pass off as Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) staff tasked with fixing a substation. However, residents became suspicious of the two men and nabbed them for attempting to steal electrical cables. The incident happened last Sunday at 10pm when the two suspects were spotted at the substation at Bandar Bukit Raja in Meru. "Residents were curious by the presence of the two youths inside the substation compound. When approached, the suspects said they were TNB staff though they were not in uniform," said a police source. "When the residents asked for their TNB authority cards, the suspects tried to flee but were apprehended." A police check revealed that the two suspects were drug addicts and intended to steal electrical cables to be sold to metal scrapyard dealers nearby. THE Sports Commissioner’s Office will be sending a letter to the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) today seeking for explanation over its controversial RM4 million "investment". The Paper That Cares, had in a probe last week, revealed MPC channelled the amount to an event management company, Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd. Checks with the Companies Commission of Malaysia showed MPC president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin and sons Idi Irwan and Ilia Ikhwan were listed as the directors of Paralimpik Ventures. Investigations showed a cheque for RM2 million was issued on April 4, 2008 and another RM2 million transferred on April 17, 2008. WHY was a staggering RM4 million invested by the Malaysian Paralympics Council (MPC) in a company helmed by its president and his sons? This is the poser raised by several council members upon learning of the investment recently. A probe by The Malay Mail revealed that in 2008, MPC had invested RM4 million in an events management company, Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd. Our investigations showed a cheque for RM2 million was issued on April 4, 2008, and another RM2 million was transferred about two weeks later, on April 17, 2008. The cheque and telegraphic transfer were allegedly signed by MPC president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin and its then treasurer, Liew Yoon Loy. It is understood the money was derived from donations and fund-raising activities carried out by MPC over the years. Sources claimed nothing on the hefty investment had been heard of since. A check with the Companies Commission of Malaysia revealed Zainal and his sons, Idi Irwan and Ilia Ikhwan, were PETALING JAYA

"Millions have been channelled out of MPC but it has not been documented. Such an investment requires the approval of two-thirds of the council, not just a handful of people." He said there was no letter of undertaking by Bank Negara

MPC executive board member Lee Sheng Chow, a blind national para athlete, said the revelation caught him by surprise. "This is news to me. "We were not privy to such information before but once this is reported to us or even published in the newspapers, we will surely investigate. "I don’t want to jump the gun but we need to know why such
a thing was done in the first place and who had consented to the deal." This latest controversy has been deemed a "double whammy" for the MPC, which was in the limelight earlier this month after several national para athletes cried foul when their monetary rewards were significantly "slashed". On June 16, The Paper That Cares front-paged a report on Malaysia's paralympic athletes who, despite finishing sixth out of 51 countries in last year's Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China, only received 30 per cent of what able-bodied athletes got in cash incentives. Special athletes used to earn RM80,000 for a gold medal, RM40,000 for silver and RM20,000 for bronze at the regional games but when the incentives were presented to them in April, the winners only received RM24,000 for gold, RM12,000 silver and RM6,000 bronze. The National Sports Council (NSC) clarified, however, that the para athletes would be better taken care of under an incentive scheme introduced this year.

MALAYSIAN Paralympics Council (MPC) president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin admitted to having channelled RM4 million to Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd in 2008. However, he was quick to add it was for a good cause. "We were promised a plot of land by the government a couple of years ago but we were informed last year the land is actually a forest reserve and we would be given another suitable location. "We invested the money as we needed the cash to grow. We just can’t dump the money in fixed deposit as the interest rates are ridiculously low." Zainal admitted there was some form of a “deal" with regards to the RM4 million but declined to elaborate. He also did not mention the government agency that had promised the land. "Our members are well aware of this project. This is an internal matter which we plan to make public once we get the approval (on the land) from the government. The money is there, rest assured. In fact, it has grown." He did not specify the amount of money projected from the investment, but acknowledged it was obtained through donations and other MPC activities in the past. "Let this not be a situation where a good deed will be seen as bad. I assure you the money is there and has grown. This will be a starting point for our building committee. Four million ringgit is not enough to build a headquarters in Kuala Lumpur." When told several MPC members claimed they were unaware of the matter, Zainal said: "We have just obtained the approval from the Sports Commissioner’s office after rectifying our constitution two months ago and will be holding our annual general meeting soon. We will discuss this matter." Zainal said MPC had been struggling to find its "own place". It is renting an office block in Brickfields now. "We want our new place to be a symbol of Malaysian para athletics."

WHILE thousands of football fans had their attentions glued to the TV screen as Malaysia took on Taiwan in a preWorld Cup qualifier match at the latter's home turf on Sunday night, another group was attracting a different kind of attention on the terraces at Taipei Municipal Stadium. A group of people, believed to be Malaysians, were distributing Bersih 2.0 flyers to spectators in the stadium after the half-time break. The flyers, written in Mandarin, allegedly urged members of the public to join them in a demonstration to be held at 2pm on Saturday. The Malay Mail was alerted to the development by a reader, who only wished to

A Facebook group titled Global Bersih 2.0 had claimed that rallies would be held at no less than 15 countries worldwide, including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others. In Malaysia, police had called on all parties not to demonstrate on Saturday, citing security concerns and warning that stern action will be taken against anyone involved.

GLOBAL Ikhwan Sdn Bhd, a multi-national business firm linked to the banned Al-Arqam movement, is unperturbed that it is being put on watch by the authorities for allegedly reviving the defunct movement. The Johor Islamic Religious Department had reportedly said it was monitoring the activities of Global Ikhwan and another group, Kumpulan Layar Bahtera, for purportedly spreading deviant Islamic teachings.
“The authorities can do as they please,” was the brief response from Fauziah Ariffin, a representative of Global Ikhwan and director of Ikhwan Catering and Restaurant. Fauziah, currently in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, was responding to a text message query from The Malay Mail. The coordinator of the infamous Obedient Wives Club did not reply when asked if there were any truth in the allegations, however, she referred The Malay Mail to an online article in Buletin Rakyat's website, in which Global Ikhwan head Hatijah Aam was interviewed. former Al-Arqam founder Ashaari Muhammad, who infamously claimed to his followers that he was a prophet. The Al-Arqam movement was banned by the Federal government in 1994 when the National Fatwa Council declared its teachings as deviant. Ashaari, affectionately known as “Abuya” to his followers, then set up Rufaqa’ Corporation Sdn Bhd in 1997, which was later closed by the authorities for allegedly recruiting new members to revive Ashaari’s teaching. He subsequently set up Global Ikhwan which today runs an assortment of businesses all over the world, from laundries and eateries to clinics and noodle manufacturing. Global Ikhwan entered the limelight when Hatijah formed the controversial Ikhwan Polygamy Club in 2009, and more recently, the Obedient Wives Club. The Obedient Wives Club caused a stir among the public when it declared that wives should be like “first class prostitutes” in serving their husband’s sexual desire.

THE authorities are bracing for various pockets of demonstrations around the city starting Thursday as supporters of the three rallies planned for Saturday start to arrive. T h e Ma l ay Mai l w a s informed that police are making contingency plans for the smaller demonstrations as intelligence revealed outstation supporters, especially from States which have their weekend on Friday and Saturday. Pe o p l e f a m i l i a r w i t h the matter said the police response will be based on existing laws and regulations. The Bersih 2.0 group — a coalition for free and fair elections — had called for a rally in the city on Saturday. In response, Umno Youth and Malay rights group Perkasa had announced their own rallies to counter the demonstration planned by Bersih. On various websites and social media outlets, Bersih activists had also announced their attention to hold demonstrations outside Malaysian missions at various foreign countries. Police had called on all parties not to demonstrate on Saturday, citing security concerns and that stern action would be taken against anyone involved. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail
Omar had been reported as saying that action would be taken against all those trying to organise the rallies, regardless of any statement or assumption made by others on police action. He said that if the rallies were to go ahead, it would jeopardise national peace and lead to chaos. On Sund ay, t he Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin made known his thoughts on the Bersih 2.0 proposed rally, saying that street demonstrations would bring more bad than good to the country. He said he had been following closely the developments concerning the planned rally and that he was confident the prime minister was capable of dealing with the situation.

Family in shock over teen's bail A GRIEVING family was in shock after an accused teenage killer was granted bail yesterday hours after allegedly stabbing their mother, the Herald Sun reports. Rosa Mercuri was knifed in front of her young daughter just after her house was pelted with eggs on Sunday night. A boy, 14, who was charged with her manslaughter was at home last night after being released from a Children's Court on unopposed bail. "I'm stunned. I'm very shocked," Mercuri's son Damian, 17, said last night. Police did not oppose bail because the accused had no convictions and they did not believe he posed a risk of reoffending.
Sir Cliff sacks loyal Girl Friday SHE is the Girl Friday who has notched up nearly 40 years of dedicated service to Sir Cliff Richard (pic). Now, however, the singer has surprisingly chosen to dispense with the services of his loyal and popular secretary, the Daily Mail reports. Gill Snow, who has worked with the singer since the 1970s, has been made redundant from his office, the Cliff Richard Organisation, based in Esher, Surrey. Snow said: "It’s over. Fined for illegal pipe connections THE Sessions Court yesterday fined a construction company RM10,000, or six months’ jail, for illegally tapping into public main pipes three years ago. Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz imposed the fine on Fong Seng Plumbing and Construction Sdn Bhd after its director Chew Chin Kim pleaded guilty to the charge, under Section 123 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006, for performing the illegal connection at a construction site at Lot 487333, PT 45266, Mukim Petaling, on July 23, 2008. National Water Services Commission (SPAN) prosecuting officer Noor Ashikin Mohamad prosecuted. Meanwhile, up to 138 water-related offences reported by the public and water operators have been taken to court by SPAN last year. The number of reported cases has substantially increased from 2009, where there were only 32. The illegal tapping of water is viewed as a serious offence and those with water-theft related information are asked to contact SPAN at 8317 9333/334/335.

Bus construction industry needs overhaul COMPULSORY seat belts in buses is a commendable move, but there is a need to overhaul the entire bus construction industry, says Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. "The seat belt requirement may not give us the desired outcomes as the bus industry here faces more critical problems," he said, noting cases in which some bus companies have resorted to seat tampering (adding more seats) to maximise passenger load which may lead
to disastrous consequences. "Other problems are noncompliance with the bus' superstructure strength to withstand impact during collisions." He said bus operators should be made to adhere to safety standards comparable with petroleum haulers. "Companies that operate petroleum haulers ensure that their drivers maintain a very high standard of safe driving and that's because these vehicles carry a precious and dangerous commodity — petroleum. Shouldn't we place the same
emphasis on buses which carry human lives?" He said there is a need to transform the entire bus construction industry in Malaysia. "We need the involvement of many parties including the engineer who designs the bus, the manufacturer who constructs the bus' body and the officer who authorises the construction. "From our analysis, the capabilities of these experts here are still inadequate." He also said that since 2008, Miros, along with other organisations, advocated the imple-
mentation of the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) code of practice to bus companies. "SHE was made compulsory to bus operators as part of their permit requirements in 2010 by the previous Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and has since been taken up by the Land Public Tr a n s p o r t Commission (SPAD)."

THE government’s new affordable housing scheme has been well-received by Klang Valley youths who are currently looking to buy their first homes. However, some feel the homes offered under the 1Malaysia People Housing Scheme (PR1MA) launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday, were too far from the city. Najib launched the first phase of the programme which involves the construction of 42,000 units of homes priced between RM150,000 and RM300,000, at 20 locations within the Klang Valley and Seremban. Among the Klang Valley locations for the first phase are Putrajaya, Bandar Tun Razak in Cheras, Cyberjaya and Putra Heights in Subang Jaya. “The programme looks
good, as I am looking for quality homes at affordable prices,” said graphic designer Jonathan Lian, 26, who is married and plans to have children soon. “There should be more options closer to the city. My workplace is in PJ and I commute by public transport, so locations like Putrajaya and Putra Heights are not convenient for me." Lian, whose household income totals RM4,000, said loans from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account and the recently-launched My First Home Scheme will help youths like himself to finance a house. Senior consultant Nevash Nair, 25, said he does not mind living far away from the city if there is efficient public transport and proper township planning.
“The government should ensure the new housing communities come with shops, schools, clinics and such for the convenience of residents," said Nevash, who is renting a place at Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong. Nevash, who earns around RM5,000 a month, said an affordable loan scheme should also be introduced alongside the affordable homes. “Most of my friends say they can’t buy a house because they can’t afford to keep up with the monthly instalments." Woman charged with cop assault A WOMAN has been granted bail after she was charged with attacking a policeman who was doused with boiling oil in Dublin on Sunday morning. Michael O’Shea was seriously injured after he responded to a call relating to a domestic dispute, the Irish Times reports. O’Shea was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries to his face, neck and shoulder. A second man injured during the incident was also taken to hospital but was later discharged. TWO years after police and the army began collaborating on joint exercises, a command post exercise (CPE) was held at the Royal Malaysian Police College (RMPC) in Cheras yesterday. Officiating the launch were Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Datuk Seri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin. The CPE's main objective is for both forces to work together to maintain the country's national security and learn from each other, as well as to help when police manpower is shorthanded. "It's been two years now since police and the armed forces started working together and the
CPE programme has benefited both parties," said Ismail. "During the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide in 2008, both forces worked as a team and also built a temporary bridge for residents to move out." Ismail said the joint exercises create better understanding between the two parties. "Under the programme, police are able to use the armed forces' training facilities and this saves RM4 million over a five-year period. "We have many other ideas we plan to execute and some have already been started, such as joint patrols in KL, Selangor, Johor and Penang. "From the feedback received, police officers are enjoying the company of their new friends from the army," said Ismail, adding he enjoys his teh tarik sessions with Zulkifeli. Zulkifeli said army officers who retire early can now join the police force. It was his first public appearance since the controversy involving him stealing money from Penny Tai, another Malaysian singer and good friend of his, broke in February. Yi said after his confession he surrendered to the police, with Tai accompanying him. "I did something embarrassing. I wasn't even aware of my own irresponsible action. A RAPPER from a wellknown hip hop group from the 90s, caught for close proximity on Sunday morning with a widow, challenged residents of the housing area to lodge another report as he defiantly returned to the house with his partner after the episode. A source told The Malay Mail that the raiding party, led by the imam of the Batu 10 mosque, as well as a representative of the mosque’s committee, was joined by officers of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS)
and police from the Batu 9 Cheras police station. In the incident, the rapper and the widow, who has two children, were said to have refused to open the door when the raiding party arrived at 4am. Entry was gained some two hours later, when the authorities were beginning their attempts to cut the grilles of the condominium unit upon receiving the permission of the ex-husband of the widow, who is reportedly the owner of the unit. The incident at the Langat
Jaya Condominium was said to have stemmed from complaints over the activities of the couple which were said to have been going on for some time. After the police report, the couple were said to have shown no remorse, and the brazen rapper even challenged residents to make another report as he continued to live in the same house with the widow. Residents of the condominium said they planned to stage another raid in response to the defiant couple.

Shamsul Yusof (pic) has gone one up on his father with his latest film KL Gangster recording a box office sale of some RM12 million. His father, Datuk Yusof Haslam, was the first producer to breach the RM6 million mark for his film Sembilu 2 in 1995. Prepaid to postpaid problem WONG SHEW FUNG feels cheated by a Maxis telemarketer after she was encouraged to convert all three of her prepaid phone lines to postpaid. The Pusat Bandar Putra Permai, Serdang, resident claims she only agreed to convert the lines after the telemarketer assured her the credit balance would be transferred to the new lines. "A few days later, my husband visited the Maxis centre in KLCC to check if my lines had been converted but a staff said they must contact their telemarketing team as this was not within Maxis' purview." On June 6, WONG received a text message say-
ing her case was closed. She says she was told her credit transfer would be reflected in the next bill but claims the amount was incorrect. WONG tried to re-convert her lines back to prepaid but was told it could only be done after six months. Rocky road to flatness
Resident asked to pay to pave, council says they're private contractors TO have a road resurfaced is usually a good thing but not when it's only halfway done. JOYCE HA says recently, contractors paved the roads near her house in SS3, Petaling Jaya. However, on Jalan SS3/8, only one-third of the road was paved, leaving several potholes untouched. "Some of the contractors hounded me to pay them several hundred ringgit to pave the area outside my house and repair the potholes along the road," she says. "I'm not going to fork out a single sen. Why should I?" JOYCE says she wrote to the local council last month via their "Aduan" (complaints) channel but has not received an answer.
● A SPOKESMAN for the Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) engineering department says they have yet to start this year's road resurfacing project. She says a contractor had just been appointed and the job scheduled to commence next month. She says the council only resurfaces critical roads due to budget constraints. On the SS3 road, the spokesman says Tenaga Nasional Berhad's contrac-
tors had paved it partially for utility purposes. "Upon completing their job, the contractors will only resurface the area they dug, such as in Jalan SS3/8." She says despite that, the council has fixed the potholes on that road. On the matter of private contractors trying to charge residents, the spokesman says the council is not linked to them. She says the council's road paving efforts would include the entrance of residents' houses out of goodwill. "But if a house entrance is the only place that needs resurfacing, we are not obligated to do it as it does not fall under our purview." She advises residents not to be duped by contractors asking money for road works. "We will send a notice to each house if our contractors are working on the roads. The council does not charge residents."

I WAS a caregiver for a patient there for some time and have seen it all. Some old people are left to fend for themselves as the family or relatives expect the overworked nurses to feed and bathe their sick 24/7. I have also been a patient at private hospitals and have to take care of myself too. Hospitals are the worst places to recuperate as all kinds of bacteria and virus are at every nook and corner, brought by the hundreds of people who walk in and out daily. — Anonymous PATIENTS are responsible for their own health. To the man who built our stadiums
KL Tan Sri Stanley Edward Jewkes (1903-2011)
IT is with great sadness Badan Warisan Malaysia records the passing of Tan Sri Stanley Jewkes (pic) on June 19, in Florida, US. Jewkes would have turned 98 this October. Jewkes served in the Public Works Department (PWD) until 1962, and continued throughout his life to speak fondly of his time working here. He established the Design and Research Branch of the PWD to ensure competent, efficient and cutting-edge engineering and architectural practices. He desig ne d St adium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and the Merdeka Park, a 10-acre park on the north side of the Merdeka Stadium, with its umbrella-shaped bandstand commonly known as “the mushroom” because of its shape, and the Merdeka Clock, a sundial incorporating the local mean time as well as the date in the zodiac calendar. In the commemorative programme for the opening of Stadium Merdeka on Aug 30, 1957, the late premier Tunku Abdul Rahman commended Jewkes for finishing the work on time. He said: "Its completion in record time is an achievement for which the engineers and contractors deserve abundant credit. I wish to thank them all, particularly Mr. S. E. Jewkes of the PWD, who spared no effort to ensure works was completed
by Merdeka Day and whose planning and engineering skill had produced such perfect results.” Designing Stadium Merdeka began on July 15, 1956, with work commencing on Sept 25. Using just a slide rule to do the drawings and engineering calculations, Jewkes made a total of 160 drawings outside of his regular office work. As soon as he completed a major design aspect or finished detailed work, he would hand the drawings over to an engineer. Jewkes was PWD director when he designed and built Stadium Negara (1962), adjacent to Stadium Merdeka and the Merdeka Park. He continued to refer to this site as an “acropolis” in the middle of the city. A multi-purpose indoor stadium to be used for exhibitions, conventions, indoor games, concerts and even ice rink-shows, Stadium Negara was built to accommodate over 10,000 people. An engineering feat of its time, with a 300-foot diameter column-free space, with an innovative concave suspended roof system with a central circular truss ring held in place by cables from a larger concentric truss ring system. Badan Warisan deputy president Laurence Loh said:
"Although I never met the man, I feel as if I know him intimately in the context of his creations, viz. Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara, having been associated with their conservation since 2003. By having to prepare the conservation plans for both the stadia, I had to study the two buildings in depth over many years, down to the most minute detail. I have walked along the corridors and through the spaces he created in search of a way to understand his thought processes. I have felt his presence in the architectural details, the muted colours, his use of art, his contemporary materials and his plans. I had the chance to study, close up, the way he designed his buildings to respond to the tropical climate and I have learnt many valuable lessons. He was way ahead of his time, a genius that walked on Malaysian soil and gave it places with a spirit of place and depth of memory." Jewkes graduated as an engineer from the Institute of Civil Engineers after which he became an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. He served under Her Majesty’s Home Guard, where he held several positions throughout

I have yet to get a maid I am happy with. Half of them are ill-prepared for the work and some are not mentally or physically fit. The agencies will show you their biodata but when they arrive, you get something different. I have lost faith in most of these agencies as their agenda is just to make money. Now when their livelihood is threatened, they try to frighten us.
Licensed agencies are not reliable and many have suffered losses. It is better to DIY, which many of my friends are doing. At l e a s t , w e g e t w h o we want and not something else. Some even fly to Indonesia to interview maids and meet their families before making a decision. This ensures the maid is happy to serve their new employer with confidence.

Ben Ali gets second jail sentence A TUNIS court yesterday sentenced ousted Tunisian president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali in his absence to 15 years in jail for possession of arms, drugs and archaeological artefacts. Thai military 'accepts' opposition win in polls THAILAND'S powerful military will respect a landslide election win by allies of Thaksin Shinawatra, who it toppled five years ago, the defence minister said yesterday, easing fears of another coup. Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra, a 44-year-old political novice now set to become the kingdom's first female premier, announced a coalition deal with four smaller parties to bolster her hold on power. Italy queries Standard and Poor's ITALY'S securities market regulator (Consob) questioned officials from ratings agency Standard and Poor's (S&P) yesterday about the timing and sourcing of a statement on the country's austerity plans. A Consob spokesman said S&P representatives answered questions for some two hours on the timing of last week's statement, which sparked fresh fears over the future of heavily indebted Italy, and the sources it was based on. They will now submit more documents and the inquiry will continue, the spokesman added. The unprecedented decision to call in S&P came after the introduction of new European guidelines that allow regulators to question ratings agency moves, Consob said on Saturday. S&P on Friday warned — while the markets were still open — that attempts by Italy to correct its public finances faced "risks," a day after the government's adoption of a €47 billion (RM205b) austerity plan. — AFP LONDON
Quit-smoking drug may cause heart problems HEALTHY, middle-aged smokers who take Pfizer's Chantix or Champix, one of the most popular quit-smoking drugs on the market, have a higher risk of suffering heart attacks or other serious heart problems, a study disclosed yesterday. British and American scientists analysed 14 clinical trials of Champix, sold as Chantix in the US and known generically as varenicline, and found the likelihood of developing serious heart problems resulting in hospitalisation, disability or death was almost 72 per cent higher in patients taking the drug. The researchers urged US drug regulators, who have already issued warnings about Chantix's safety in certain patient groups, to take note of these new findings. "I think our new research shifts the risk-benefit profile of varenicline," said Sonal Singh of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who led the research and published it in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. — Reuters

Radiohead tests China's controlled web OUTSPOKEN British rock group Radiohead, which has been critical of China's human rights record, appears to be testing the country's censored Internet by opening a Chinese microblog account. Tens of thousands of people have begun following a verified account in the name of the Oxford-based band, which was set up on Friday on Sina Weibo, the most popular microblog site in the country where censors block Twitter. "Testing the Weibo," reads the only message posted on the account. That message was forwarded by more than 10,000 people, drew nearly 4,200 comments and had attracted almost 60,000 followers by yesterday. Many Chinese Radiohead fans said they hoped the

In the past week, police have detained, questioned and released the two rabbis as part of an ongoing investigation into a book called The King's Torah, that justifies killing non-Jews under certain circumstances. SWEDISH doctors yesterday presented a new method they say dramatically reduces the risk of multiple births from in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) . The technique would help doctors determine the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby through IVF, they said. At present, fertility clinics tend to transfer several embryos to the uterus to boost the chance of a live birth, but this often leads to multiple pregnancies. "There are other prediction models, but this is the first that differentiates between the chance of pregnancy if you transfer either one or two embryos and also calculates the risk of twins," Jan Holte of the Carl von Linne clinic in Uppsala told media. With this model, "when it is time for transferring embryos, if we see that the twin risk is too high, we only transfer one embryo and we freeze the others," he explained. Over four years since 2004, his clinic transferred 3,410 embryos. Feel the excitement of surfing with the wind
WINDSURFING is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a board usually two to four metres long, powered by the orthogonal effect of the wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and comprises a mast, wishbone boom and sail. The sail area ranges from less than 3m2 to more than 12m2 depending on the conditions, the skill of the sailor and the type of windsurfing being undertaken. When the wind gets above 8-10 knots (typically 15 knots+ for recreational equipment) the board ceases to move through the water and instead planes on top of the water, skimming over the surface at much higher speeds. To make the most of planing conditions, the board needs to be smaller and can dispense with the centreboard as sufficient lift and lateral resistance are provided by the fin (or combination of fins). When planing, jibing is achieved via shifting the rig and engaging one of the rails (edges) of the board which is referred to as carving. Windsurf boards can also tack like a sail boat. Though windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal planing conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots. Beginners must develop
their balance and core stability, acquire a basic understanding of sailing theory, and learn a few techniques before they can progress from board sailing to windsurfing. Evergreen Elizaga makes his point THEY say you have to be a little crazy to be a goalkeeper — but Ecuador's veteran shot-stopper Marcelo Elizaga drove Paraguay mad with his stellar showing in Sunday's goalless draw at Santa Fe. Elizaga, a 39-year-old from the Argentine city of Moron, is a latecomer to the international stage having only made his debut for his adopted country at the 2007 Copa. But Sunday saw him leaping about like a man a decade younger as he denied Edgar Barreto, Nestor Ortigoza and Roque Santa Cruz, whose header shortly after the interval had goal written all over it until Elizaga flung himself to turn the effort away. NATIONAL media laid into five-time world champions Brazil this morning after the Selecao made a hash of their first Copa America pool match, drawing 0-0 with rank outsiders Venezuela. Although Brazil, on a hattrick of wins in the continental tournament, would have to make a similar mess of upcoming games against Paraguay and Ecuador to miss out on a quarterfinal place, their poor showing enraged the Press. Worse still, it did not escape the country's scribes that Brazil's women have been performing rather better at the women's World Cup in Germany, where the Samba Girls have already reached the last eight with something to spare. "The men's team turned in a ridiculous performance against the Venezuelans and the players left the pitch shame-faced after the 0-0 draw," stormed O Globo daily in a leader article. "Neymar, Ganso, Pato, Robinho — they all played badly," the paper moaned. "At least we have Marta," O Globo added, in a reference to
the women's star striker who has been on the rampage at their event in Germany. The paper added in an aside that the Brazilian game appeared to be going to the dogs — an ironic reference to a canine pitch invasion during the match. The dog ran at one point to the Venezuelan six yard box — about the closest anyone got to the minnows' goal all afternoon — before trudging off. "Zero inspiration" was how Folha de Sao Paulo daily saw the Brazilian showing. "The Brazilian team failed its first official test under coach Mano Menezes — and left the stadium to a chorus of boos." BRAZIL striking duo Alexandre Pato and Neymar blamed their side's lack of inspiration in front of goal for the disappointing 0-0 draw with Venezuela in their opening Group B match at Estadio Unico yesterday. The Brazilians were highly favoured to win but had just two clear chances to score throughout the game and failed to capitalise on both occasions. Pato, who crashed the ball against the bar in the first-half, said he and his teammates must move on. "I tried, but unfortunately the ball hit the woodwork. The game did not go as we expected. Now we have to forget about this game," said the AC Milan man. Neymar, meanwhile, admitted they will have to work on improving their effectiveness in attack ahead of the next match against Paraguay. "This was a good game and our team did very well. We have to work more on our finishing. We want to win, we always do. The goal did not come, but we will work this week for them to come," said the 19-year-old Santos
striker. Defender Thiago Silva lamented Venezuela's defensive approach to the game and added his side should have played wider. "We apologise, because if we had scored in the first-half, the game would have been different. Against teams who play so closed, it is hard to play in the middle, we should have played more on the wings to find more space," he said. Liverpool midfielder Lucas. meanwhile, believes Brazil were in the driving seat. "We had control of the match, for the most part, we did not let them create a lot of chances," he said. "We had that ball which the defender cleared off the line and Pato's shot against the woodwork. In the secondhalf, we committed more mistakes. Now, we have to keep on working in the next matches to play with ball possession and create more chances." However, defender Andre Santos lamented his teammates' poor finishing. "The team created a lot of chances, it was a shame that we were not able to score and win the match. The pitch was bad and
it hurt us a little bit, but we can't use that as an excuse. We have to do some better finishing," he said. Disappointed coach Mano Menezes said his players were predictable. However, he is confident they will learn from this game in order to prepare for the last two group matches. "The result was bad, because we played better than Venezuela. We had the control and the initiative of the match, but we lacked clarity in some choices, mainly to find players in the finishing moments," he said. "We were too obvious. The ball got to the players who were wide, but they were too far away from Pato and the play could not flow. That is something we have to work on during the week." He also blamed the poor condition of the pitch for the slow pace of the game, but underlined that was not the reason his side did not win. "It looks to me the pitch hindered faster play and play of more quality. However, that is not our problem. We have to look over our performance and correct our problems," he said.

ARGENTINA striker Carlos “the Apache” Tevez has confirmed Manchester City’s worst fears by saying he must leave the club to spend more time with his children, according to an interview with Britain’s Daily Mail. City captain Tevez led the north-west side to FA Cup glory and qualification for the Champions League last season but all the while did so while living apart from his young daughters. He is currently playing for Argentina in the Copa America but, in a statement published on the Mail’s website yesterday, Tevez said: “It is with great regret that I have to inform Manchester City of my wish to leave the club. “I would like to state that
