One more year SPAD to give operators 12 months to offload their 30-year-old vehicles

SCHOOL bus operators will be given a year to replace their vehicles which are more than 30 years old when the lifespan ruling is implemented. The grace period, however, will only be allowed if the old buses pass Puspakom safety checks. Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad said the grace period was given so operators would not have to rush to buy new school buses when their old vehicles reached the 30-year age limit. He, however, declined to say when the ruling would be imple-

By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my mented. It is expected the ruling will be enforced from next year as the re-registration period for commercial vehicles, including school buses, is due to end on Sept 30. School bus operators have voiced opposition to the new ruling, cautioning there will be chaos if it is implemented immediately as most of the 25,000 vehicles serving the industry have reached the age limit.

Both operators and drivers had called on SPAD to give more time and money to replace old school buses, claiming they did not earn enough to replace the old vehicles. Azhar said SPAD viewed the continuing use of old school buses as a serious safety issue, citing the commission’s survey that some 2,000 school buses in Penang and Johor were more than 35 years old. It was probably this reason operators in both States had solicited the help of politicians from both sides of the divide to pressure the government to cancel

the age-limit ruling. Azhar said Malaysia was probably the only country in the world which allowed school buses that were more than three decades old to be on the road as the average lifespan for these vehicles in developed countries was 10 years. He said SPAD was entrusted to transform the country’s land transport and so it was baffling for the body to be facing opposition from the school bus industry which seemed eager to maintain the status quo. • More reports on pg2

Back on the road again SPAD: Owners can opt for second-hand school buses

SCHOOL bus operators do not need to buy new buses when their vehicles are retired upon reaching the 30-year age limit. They can opt to purchase second-hand buses, even 20-year-old ones, which they can operate for another 10 years. L and Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad said there was no ruling or guidelines preventing operators from purchasing secondhand vehicles to continue with their operations. He said second-hand buses

cost between RM30,000 to RM80,000. Azhar was commenting on claims by school bus operators that the 30-year age limit ruling for school buses will be detrimental to the industry. They claimed the ruling, if implemented, would result in chaos as most of the 25,000 vehicles serving the industry reached the age limit. Operators and bus drivers had called on SPAD to give time and money to replace old buses. They claimed they

did not earn enough from the business to be able to replace their old buses. Azhar said SPAD inherited the 30-year age limit from the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB). He said back in 2006, CVLB mandated school buses must be retired after 20 years of service. However, the limit was raised to 30 years in 2009 following pressure by bus operators. Azhar said bus operators were "testing the waters" and were trying to pressure the government into scrapping the age limit on school buses altogether.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE: Second-hand school buses may return to the road for another 10 years

Operators reject year-long grace period offer THE olive branch offered by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) of a year-long grace period for school bus operators to replace 30-year-old buses with new ones has been rejected by the operators. Describing it as "nothing new", the operators are still holding out for financial aid to facilitate the purchase of new buses. Federation of Malaysian School Bus Drivers Association adviser Amali Munif R ahmat said the one-year grace period was previously offered by the Commercial Vehicle

Ministry. They are playing with words and we are frustrated with SPAD's attitude,” he said. School bus operators are opposed to the new ruling, cautioning there will be chaos if it was implemented immediately as most of the 25,000 vehicles serving the industry were of the 30-year age limit. Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Bumiputra School Bus Operators Association chairman Ahmad Fauzi Murad

said if the government was adamant in implementing the policy without financial packages, they would not rule out a strike as a last option. “We only earn so much. We have families to feed. We want the government to create a fund to help us. If not, we are forced to stop operations in KL and Selangor. "The students will not have transport to schools and illegal vans will emerge in the light of government decisions

made without discussions with stakeholders,” he said. National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council president Assoc Prof Datuk Mohamad Ali Hassan agreed with SPAD’s argument that continued use of old school buses could raise safety issues. “Our concern is safety of drivers and children under their care. We believe 30 years is enough time for a bus to be on the road and the government must be firm on this matter. The government also should not give that kind of instruction and not help the bus operators and driv-

ers. A special scheme must be introduced to allow operators to buy new buses on installment basis,” he said. He said the government cannot expect to enforce new regulations while ignoring the welfare and interest of drivers. He suggested buses that pass Puspakom’s inspection must be allowed to continue operating. “If an old bus has been tested to be road-worthy it should be allowed to continue service for another five years. Within that timeframe, an operator can buy a new bus,” he said.

Meanwhile, a source at the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) said the Uniform Building Bylaws (UBBL) 1984 must be amended first before the government could implement the AC ruling. "To allow an AC to be appointed, the UBBL must be amended or revised. Hell of a cat 'hotel' 100 pets rescued, another 200 found in house

By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my

THOROUGH LOOK: The volunteers checking for more animals through a window of the Sg Buloh house at 2am this morning

POOR PET: One of the cats with a gaping wound on its neck taken from the pet boarding centre

IT was billed as a cat "hotel" run by feline lovers, so what pet owners and volunteers found yesterday came as a massive shock. Inside the centre located at Damansara Damai, were 100 cats, most of them in unhealthy condition and many suffering from drastic weight loss in just a week. Nine dead cats were also found. Three hours later, the owners and volunteers went to a house where another 200 cats, many of them hungry and dirty, were rescued. The drama unfolded about noon when the cat owners, back from the long Hari Raya break, sensed something wrong at the centre. One of them, Azli Mohamad, 35, who had sent three of his cats to the centre eight days ago, said he felt suspicious when his phone calls went unanswered. "I kept on calling the pet hotel but there was no answer. When I went there today, I saw many other pet owners waiting but the place was closed," he said. Some of the owners, who were joined by volunteers, decided to break into the centre because they could hear the cats meowing in distress. "They had no choice but to do that. Even the security guards and police who were at the scene agreed they should should go in and rescue the cats," said Azli. In addition to the dead cats, about 90 — still kept in their animal carries — were found in two separate small rooms which looked like offices rather than a pet boarding centre.

"There was a terrible stench when the shutter was opened and the place was a mess. It seemed like the cats were living in hell and I don't think they were given any food at all," said one of the owners, Shazana Mahazir, 25. The f reelance graphic designer, who found her cat, was shocked to see its condition. "My first thought was to take it to the vet immediately and while I was leaving, I saw another two cats looking so weak I just had to take them along," she said. The veterinarian in Brickfields was shocked to see her cat's condition and said that if it had stayed on for another day or so, it could have died. Shazana had paid about RM230 for her cat, Fat Fat, to stay at the centre for eight days. "I was told Fat Fat would be kept in a private room and that

it would be well taken care of. From the website, the place looked very luxurious. "I could not stomach seeing the condition of the cats; it was an ugly sight. I can't believe that people could treat the cats this way." Shazana said Fat Fat's weight dropped from 3.9kg to 3.4kg and its body temparature was 45 degrees. Another owner said his cat was so skinny he could see "bones bulging out with only a thin layer of skin". The cats which died were believed to have starved. The owners and several volunteers lodged a report at the Sungai Pelong police station. Police detained a man in his late 20s, believed to be the owner of the centre. At 3pm, the owners and volunteers, accompanied by police and the detained man, went to a house in Desa Moccis, Sungai Buloh, where

200 more cats were rescued. "That cats appeared hungry and dirty. The police took them to the police station and later allowed the owners to take them home," said Shazana. Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Supt Meor Hamdan confirmed that nine police reports have been lodged over the incident "The first report we received was a complaint from a worried cat owner who said that when police arrived at the scene, they decided to cut the lock and enter the premises to help the cats," he said. Meor said police would investigate why the pets had been left unattended and will take a statement from the staff of the centre. He said once the police had completed their investigation, they may hand over the matter to the Veterinary Services Department.

Volunteers to the rescue

HORRID ORDEAL: A volunteer sits with another poorly cared for feline after the rescue operation

ALTHOUGH they were not their cats, about 100 pet lovers who had heard about yesterday's incident joined hands to rescue the animals. "I went to the pet hotel when a friend told me about it. I just wanted to help in any way I could," one of the volunteers, who only wanted to be identified as Sheila, said. Sheila told The Malay Mail the owners and volunteers managed to rescue about 90 cats at the centre. "Nine cats were found dead

and the others seemed like they had not been fed for days. We immediately started a collection and bought cat food, which was high in protein, and fed them first," she said. About 40 of the cats were claimed by their owners and the rest were taken home by the volunteers themselves. "We will care for the cats until we can locate the owners," said Sheila. Another volunteer, Zizi Yusof, in her 30s, said she

and other volunteer had created a Facebook page and posted pictures of the cats that are being temporarily cared for by the volunteers. "We will post on the page pictures of the cats and the contact details of the volunteers taking care of them," said Zizi, who took home three of the cats. Early this morning, about 30 volunteers returned to the house in Desa Moccis, Sungai Buloh, where 200 cats were rescued earlier.

"We had heard rumours there were still some cats missing and they could be in the house. So, we returned to the Sungai Pelong police station and asked the police officers if we could lodge another police report," said Zizi. "The officers were very helpful and decided to follow us to the house again to check if any cats were left behind." The volunteers did not find any cats.

Getting combat ready Preparations vital before entering war zones

BLUE bulletproof vests and safety helmets are a must for media personnel on assignment in war-torn countries. Newsmen are also advised not to travel in convoys of government military lorries and vehicles as they are targets for rebels and terrorists. Counter Terrorist expert and the Southeast Asia Regional director for the International Association for Counterterrorism and Security Professionals, Andrin Raj, said in war zones areas like Somalia, rebel groups assume anyone seen with the government or its army are their allies. Bernama TV cameraman, Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, 40, who was part of a humanitarian mission to famine-stricken Somalia, was killed in a shooting incident in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, on Friday afternoon. Malaysian newsmen from travelling in vehicles embossed with Jalur Gemilang as it could be easily mistaken for a United States flag. "There are factors that must be viewed seriously before sending newsmen to life threatening areas. If you look at the BBC or CNN journalists or cameramen who are deployed to war-torn countries, they always move with Special Forces Unit (SFU). "They wear blue bulletproof vests and helmets marked 'PRESS' sanctioned by the United Nations when entering areas of crossfire. They travel in convoys guarded by the SFU and travel in vehicles marked 'PRESS' without flags or misleading symbols," he told The Malay Mail yesterday. "In these situations, our National flag could be mistaken for the US flag. From a distance, one can't be sure. The weather can also distort the image of the flag. Parties must minimise risk THE death of Noramfaizul Mohd Nor brought back a flood of memories for The Malay Mail's executive editor Terence Fernandez (pic) based on his own experience in Baghdad, Iraq, eight years ago. Fernandez, who was a member of the government-sponsored Joint Media Team Malaysia covering the invasion of Iraq by Allied Forces in 2003, almost lost his life in an ambush t h at k i l l e d t wo and injured three, including two Mercy Malaysia doctors. “We had limited training and was on a plane within a week of being told of the mission,” said Fernandez. “Our mistake was traveling in vans bearing Syrian number plates. “Someone forgot to replace the number plates which was a cardinal rule when traveling in Iraq as foreign-registered

vehicles are viewed with suspicion.” Fernandez said they entered a Shi'ite neighbourhood which was engaged in gun-battles with soldiers of fortune from Syria. “The moment they saw the plates, they started firing, ignoring the prominently-placed banners and stickers on the vans stating 'Malaysia' and 'Doctors' in Arabic,” he said. Fernandez said it was not enough for newsmen alone to undergo training, as it is also pertinent for the organisers themselves, in this case Kelab Putera 1Malaysia, underwent some form of orientation. “This is because newsmen are placed at the mercy of organisers whom they trust cared for their well-being and did the preliminary groundwork before bringing them to Mogadishu.”

assume them as enemies and will launch an attack," Andrin said. He said these precautions are not a 100 per cent assurance but it helps minimise the chances of getting injured. "Newsmen from BBC and CNN get a month's training before they are deployed to crisis areas. They are taught to identify areas they cover and they given basic combat movements when they are in crossfire situations," he said. He said if Malaysian journalists were to be sent in the future for such assignments, the government must ensure newsmen are taken care of by the country they would be covering. Andrin, who is also director of Stratad Asia-Pacific Strategic Centre that organises programmes for countering terrorism and combat zone movement, rules said those who need more information can go to www.stratad.net. "Stratad offers PreDeployment Training for outof-theatre education and orientation to everyone, including civil servants, diplomats and military personnel.

Can't keep a good man down London riot victim Asyraf to continue his studies in the UK

LONDON riot victim Muhamad Asyraf Haziq, the 20-year-old Malaysian student who made world headlines after being assaulted and robbed on Aug 8, has recovered from his injuries and will be staying put in the UK. His mother Maznah Abu Mansor told The Malay Mail she and two other family members flew to London to see Asyraf in mid-August and found him in good spirits. "Doctors had to insert a metal plate in his jaw but he was able to talk and due to

his speedy recovery, they had taken out the plate earlier than expected," said Maznah, 47. "We asked Asyraf whether he wanted to return to Malaysia but he decided to stay in the UK and has gone back to college there." Asyraf is a f irst-year accountancy student at the Kaplan Financial College (FTC) London. "He told us he never thought of quitting despite what hap-

pened to him and he's determined to complete his studies there and succeed," said Maznah. "We now feel at ease after visiting him. He assured us he would be extra careful and told us not to worry about him any more." Before leaving for London on Aug 13, Maznah told The Paper That Cares she would persuade Asyraf to come home and continue his studies here, although she would leave the final decision to him.

Maznah, her 49-year-old husband Rossli Harun, a building safety officer, and Muhamad Fitri stayed in London for a week. Their trip was sponsored by Umno. During their visit, the Malaysian High Commission arranged for the family to watch the BWF World Badminton Championship finals between

Datuk Lee Chong Wei and China's Lin Dan on Aug 14 at the Wembley Arena Indoor Stadium. "This is the first Hari Raya where Asyraf is not with us but he told us he would celebrate Raya with his fellow Malaysians in London," said Maznah. On Aug 8, Asyraf was cycling through Barking in east London to join his friends for breaking-fast when he crossed paths with a 50-strong mob of rioters, apparently on their way to loot a

retail park. He was approached by a gang who attacked him and stole his bicycle. He was repeatedly punched and kicked. A second group, on the pretext of helping him, robbed him of his wallet, handphone and PlayStation Portable (PSP) player. ‘Monkey’ Malaysians vs ‘dirty-minded’ Iranians THE taxi driver, that so-called trusty barometer for public opinion, was used as a major source by "trustworthy" Time magazine in its latest edition to depict Iranian exiles in Malaysia: “Iranians are dirtyminded people — they come here to drink and take drugs and wear their shirts open like women.” Then, the writer, John Krich, as if to justify narrow-mindedness, quotes an Iranian living here: “We bring 2,500 years of culture, but here 100 years ago they were still in the trees with the monkeys.” Further, Krich callously mentioned an unnamed Iranian exile who claimed his countrymen have had to bribe the police every time they wanted to have a party. Stereotypical and xenophobic remarks, if any — and they sparked sharp online exchanges between Malaysians and Iranians when there is little or no on-ground animosity between both. Probably, the worst locals assume of Iranians is the continuing naive attempts by traffickers to smuggle drugs into our country. So, allow me to pursue with bulldog determination the article, "Iranian Exiles Flock East to Multiethnic Malaysia" in the latest edition of Time, a fundamentally serious news magazine, which is taken seriously by serious people. First, the so-called "Malay" cabbie who labelled Iranians dirty-minded and then the Iranian living here who made the monkey taunt. For all we know, the cabbie was a foreigner, as we all know

some cabs are driven by aliens who speak the language well — well, at least some. I wonder: Is this cabbie an enlightened source to comment on the rising number of Iranians fleeing their country’s harsh religious regime to Malaysia? Okay, Time would argue he is Malaysian. Then, I would contend a cabbie is not a credible authority on the life and aspirations of foreigners in our country. The Iranian is named as Abed Rangamiz, the host of GEM-TV, a privately owned, Dubai-based illegal satellite station that apparently beams the modern world into Iran from Kuala Lumpur. Abed declared Malaysia generously gave him a visa but having fled a harsh religious regime, he chose to discredit the people of the country that gave him a second home. I wonder: Why would the TV host be spiteful to the very nation that, in his words, “freely gives us (Iranians) visas, the others being Turkey and Turkmenistan” by making chauvinistic remarks that could compromise his position and that of the satellite TV business? I can’t fathom how Putrajaya would have given work permits to some 60 Iranian exiles, including Abed, to operate a bootleg satellite TV station that, according to Time, dubs Brazilian soap operas, Japanese cartoons and American music videos into Farsi, the language of Persia (Iran). Br ibing t he p olice to hold a party?

NEWS TO ME: Excerpts from the questionable 'Time' article

I wonder: Why and when did Iranians, or for that matter, any other foreign nationals living here, have had to bribe the police every time they wanted to have a party? Being the nocturnal creature I am, I have come across that odd cop who throws his weight around in a club but I have yet to come across foreigners paying the local police to party. While I can’t disagree with Krich that most Iranians in Malaysia bask in the comfort of a life free from ideological pressures, it seems to me he stretches out in a "timely" feeling of power, of being right at a "well-timed" epicen-

tre of gossip. As a regular clubber, I am humbled Krich views Kuala Lumpur as the base for frequent "Persian disco nights" and glitzy concerts by famed singers. The city is far from it. So, what if there are clubs that dedicate a day each week to “Iranian Night” and feature Iranian deejays and music? I don’t know of any club doing this but so what if there are? What if there are African nights in a club? Aren’t expatriates and students from these countries entitled to their kind of entertainment? Or are such nights only meant

for American and European nights? Krich’s claim of singers calling for the overthrow of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a performance in Kuala Lumpur last March to celebrate the Iranian New Year was quickly dismissed by my Iranian educationist friend Aased Ahmed as a “tiring attempt to create a rift between Iran and Malaysia”. Aased should know because he attended every event to celebrate Nowruz Persian New Year, including the only highprofile concert at the Putra World Trade Centre on March 27 that featured Iranian pop singer Googoosh. Aased said Time magazine’s intention to mock the Iranian administration and craft Malaysia as "utopia" for exiles flocking our country fell flat. Personally, I love having different cultures around but it should not be at the expense of the parent culture. To stay competitive, Kuala Lumpur must be what New York is to the United States — a global centre of business, culture and innovation, none of which can be achieved without the people of all nations working and living here. How would Malaysians abroad feel if they were similarly branded acrimoniously? We should never fail to see migrants as people who have their own families and aspirations. I know of many who make the effort to get to know them, learn from them and help them succeed alongside us. Aren’t we all proud when

Malaysians do well abroad? Surely, that must be partly because there were locals there who got to know them, believed in them and helped them succeed. I am not denying Malaysia has a problem with foreigners converging on neighbourhoods and creating social havoc. I am not denying the city centre resembled a foreign land over the long holidays. I agree our security and social networks are being invaded by "aliens" who are not investors or people who can fill our brain drain society. Possibly, the more beneficial migrants will, in time to come, be happily settled and become pillars of the community. Who knows, they may even become valued members of their local neighbourhood watch. But to be prejudiced, racist, small-minded and blind to the humanitarian aspects of such alien developments is not being a true Malaysian. I will never meet all of the some 50,000 Iranians living in Malaysia but, like some of us, they and other foreigners are challenging language barriers and other social factors to call Malaysia home. Finally, I wonder Mr Krich: How do men wear their shirts open like women? Just how does a woman wear her shirt open? FRANKIE D'CRUZ is editorat-large of The Malay Mail. Motorcycle nuisance

Mechanics turn one side of Jalan Bukit Angkasa into 'workshop' area

SARAH JUHARI, of Kuala Lumpur finds motorcycles parked by the side of the road along Jalan Bukit Angkasa a nuisance as they block the left lane of the road. “There are workshops along the side of the road near where Jalan Kerinchi meets Jalan Bukit Angkasa. The mechanics park the motorcycles on the side of Jalan Bukit Angkasa and block the left lane,” she says. According to SARAH, the mechanics sometimes go so far as to fix the motorcycles on the road itself. She says traffic from Jalan Kerinchi and turning left down Jalan Bukit Angkasa often grinds to a

FAIRUZ CHRISTOPHER ABDULLAH, of Kuala Lumpur, suspects someone has created two fraudulent Celcom accounts in his name and, as a result, he has been billed more than RM2,500. FAIRUZ, 28, says he lost his

halt as cars and motorcycles must merge lanes because of the obstruction. SARAH, who takes the route daily on her way back home to Pantai Hill Park, says she has been involved in several nearaccidents because of this. She says that after the last incident, in which she nearly collided with a car at the junction, she wanted to tell the mechanics they were blocking the lane. “There were a few of them and they shouted at me and started to behave aggressively. I got scared and drove off," she says. SARAH hopes Kuala Lumpur City Hall will do something about the problem.

● CITY HALL says it is aware of the problem and is monitoring the situation. A spokesman says City Hall is taking action against vehicles parked along the road and on the curb as they are deemed a public nuisance. Between January and July this year, 586 compound notices have been issued to vehicles parked illegally at the location. “City Hall will take follow-up actions and continue to monitor the situation from time to time.” When contacted, SARAH says she is not satisfied with the answer provided by City Hall as she feels it should take tougher action.

In both accounts, he says, his late mother’s name had been falsified. FAIRUZ says he had previously approached Celcom to clarify the issue but the procedure had been too tedious. "I had already made a police

A spokesman for the company says: “Our investigation reveals this is a fraudulent case and we have informed FAIRUZ we have given him a rebate, totalling RM2,557.77.” FAIRUZ confirms that Celcom has contacted him,

stating the issue has been resolved However, he says Celcom is not able to disclose who had created the false accounts. FAIRUZ is waiting for a settlement notice which Celcom says will be posted to him.

‘Adopt my dogs’ (Aug 22) ● I DON’T know much about dogs but I know my dogs. Mongrels are actually pretty smart if trained and not that difficult to look after compared to pure breeds. I used to have 12 mongrels in my house and they were all very gentle and loyal. My mongrels even scared away people who wanted to burn our house down one night. Neighbours said my dogs were barking at our door trying to alert us but we were dead asleep and, luckily, the men went away. At that time, we didn’t know of any training but the dogs just acted according to their instinct. Pure breeds

KL: Road safety

KL: 'Jaga kereta' nuisance (Aug 30)

4Es for safer driving

PUBLIC transportation expert Prof Dr Abdul Rahim Nor said recently the only way to overcome incompetent driving is to revise the driving school syllabus. Bearing in mind that anyone who has to sit for an exam will naturally focus on passing rather than learning, revising the syllabus alone may not produce the desired outcome. Competency-based-training (CBT) for work-based learning may be more suitable as it has no fixed time-frame. Some can be certified competent within a short time while others take longer. However, implementing CBT for awarding of driving licences would pose new challenges. As for road safety, the experts tell us that education, engineering and enforcement are the three major factors. I would add "example" to make it "4Es" and offer some suggestions to make them more effective. ● First, education. It includes road users such as motorists, cyclists and pedestrians plus the authorities. Many of those entrusted with public responsibilities lack the expertise or care as custodians. The approval criteria for locally-built truck and bus bodies are one example. ● Second, engineering. I am waiting for the day when motor vehicle manufacturers connect a wire from the horns to the headlights. Think about how many collisions could have been avoided and lives saved, if the headlights would automatically flash when the horn button is pressed in an emergency. Warning sounds can hardly be heard in noisy environment such as when the stereo is at full blast or in heavy rain. Uncovered potholes not only damage tyres and suspension but also cause accidents as drivers either brake or swerve suddenly to avoid them. Motorists respond similarly upon sighting a badly repaired stretch or puddle on the road. ● Third, enforcement. The authorities should not overspend to hire an army of enforcement officers or wait for sufficient budget to install thousands of static cameras. Without having to spend another ringgit, traffic offenders can be caught on mobile cameras instead of allowing them to get away with impunity.

Society parasites

I WAS asked to pay RM10 to park my car at a metered parking lot in Taman Miharja, at 12.30am. I refused to pay and decided to drive away because I just wanted to take away teh tarik from the mamak shop. The teh tarik is RM1.50 but I had to pay RM10 to park at a town council metered parking lot in the middle of the night. But the jaga kereta boy refused to give in and chased after my car and insisted I paid him and he threatened me.

Shocked, I responded with some obscenities and threatened to call the police. Only then did he back off. They are just parasites of society which should be dealt with severely. I've heard these boys are just "employees" of the gangsters in the area. It is a kind of "protection fee" you have to pay for entering their territory and the problem is bigger than you think. Dan

Send them to jail THIS has been a nuisance for the past 50 years. I recall seeing them since very young and the nuisance still persists. This is not right and the government has failed miserably here. How about imposing a three-

year jail term for jaga kereta boys as fines are not solving the problem? Perhaps the police should start rounding up the culprits and charging them in court. It's that simple. Soni

KL: Woman killed in ambulance incident (Sept 1)

Switch to better vehicles DON'T GAMBLE WITH LIVES: Pledges put up by road users at the launch of a road safety campaign

The Royal Malaysian Police, Road Transport Department and the Land Public Transport Commission should appoint private corporations to hire camera crews to videotape traffic offences. As payment is based on the evidence submitted, the exercise is not only self-funding but also highly profitable. ● Fourth, example. Upon getting their driver’s licence, what was learnt in driving school is quickly thrown out the window, as new drivers would ape other motorists to show they are just as good. However, most will end up just as bad by following others to stay cool. When traffic lights take too long to change and there is no oncoming traffic, the head of the queue driving off often lead the rest to follow. The first car switching to the emergency lane in congested traffic is bound to open the floodgate. Under ideal conditions, driving at high speed is not dangerous. Rushing is the cause of reckless driving and is unsafe at any speed, including reversing. Inconsiderate driving is due to poor driving skills and attitude. They are all contagious and can only be stopped with radical measures. Offenders caught on camera or by patrol officers should be given a 30-day period to report at any Road Transport Department.

They are to be interviewed and if necessary, undergo counselling to curb their bad driving habits or training to improve their driving skills. Millions of summonses issued have not proved to be deterrence. Perhaps the fear of having to spend time for counselling or training would induce many motorists to behave behind the wheel. T h e l i fe s t y l e s of m any Malaysians indicate they give scant regard to death or ill health as 60 per cent of the adult population is overweight or obese due to overeating and lack of exercise. Convenience and enjoyment are given greater importance. It is common to see illegal or double parking as walking a short distance can be too much hard work. A little effort often separates the difference between success and failure, but many stop short. Road safety measures must take into account such common behaviour in order to be effective. Meanwhile, can we act on what we already know, including the pointers given by Prof Dr Abdul Rahim Nor, who is also Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Social Development and Environmental Studies head? Road safety has always been the flavour of the week, come any major festival or road disaster.

Talk is cheap and, sadly, so is life on Malaysian roads. Nevertheless, Malaysians have also shown to be deeply caring. Rescue teams have no qualms risking life and injury in search of missing persons or bodies, regardless of who the victims are. We can be equally generous and wasteful with our food, money and time. The Malaysian paradox can be quite fascinating and disgusting. Road safety can only be transformed when motorists are made to realise they cannot gamble with lives such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or using the hand phone. Rehabilitating repeat offenders should include visits to the casualty wards of hospitals and prison quarters to drive the point home. Viewing documentaries on the heartaches of broken families and pains of limbs and lives lost in road accidents would also help. Drivers must constantly be aware that they are handling a potential killer machine and their behaviour on the road reflects who they really are. Lack of courtesy in our society is clearly manifested on our roads. As such, greater importance ought to be in place to promote better driving and road safety in Malaysia, benefiting both the locals and visitors alike. YS Chan

VEHICLES used as ambulances should be reviewed. Some are just vans which may not be suitable for use as ambulances as they are not made for high-speed driving and may lack many safety features available in high-end models.

Also, the sirens used for ambulances should be made louder for all drivers, including those in air-conditioned vehicles, to hear. The police sirens are much more better. LL

Emergency lanes not used IT was reported that even stalled vehicles are not to be parked in emergency lanes as they are strictly to be used by emergency vehicles only. In my 20 years of driving in Malaysia, never have I once seen the emergency lanes used

by ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles; they would rather weave in and out of traffic. What's the point of having rules or laws when the authorities can't enforce them? Unbelievable

NEW LOVE: Singaravelu brought Rocky, which resembled a young Johnny, home last November

Puppy love

Tampin family whose dog Johnny was killed now have new pup Rocky IT HAS been a year since the senseless killing of their beloved dog Johnny. Now his family have finally been able to open their hearts to a new puppy. While he would never fully take Johnny's place, S. Singaravelu, 56, said Rocky the pup has helped the family cope with their tragic loss. The father-of-four told The Malay Mail the family was still mourning the unexpected death of Johnny, who was allegedly shot by officers of the Tampin Municipal Council last year. The family had no plans to get a new dog as they felt no pet could replace Johnny. That is, until Singaravelu first laid eyes on little Rocky. "In November, I visited a friend whose pet had just given birth. One of the puppies looked exactly like Johnny

when I first found him at a market near my house. My heart was filled with nostalgia. "I immediately knew that I had to have that puppy," he said. His friend initially refused to let Singaravelu have it, but after much persuasion, the former relented. When he brought the puppy home, his entire family took to him within hours and now Rocky's presence has helped ease some of the pain of Johnny’s passing. "We love Rocky but we will never forget Johnny, who can never be replaced," the security supervisor said. Singaravelu said the family would be placing some of Johnny's favourite food at his

grave at a plantation in Alor Gajah, Malacca. Singaravelu added that until today, no authority has admitted that Johnny was brutally shot. On Sept 28, The Paper That Cares highlighted Singaravelu’s claim that his two-year-old licensed dog had been shot

inside the compound of his son’s home. He said he found his dog missing on Aug 24 last year, and had trailed three Tampin Municipal Council vehicles he spotted leaving the area that day. When they stopped in Taman Batu Belang, Singaravelu purportedly saw Johnny's bloodied remains inside one of the vehicles but was allegedly not allowed to take the carcass, only the dog's licence. He reportedly said the officers claimed to have shot Johnny because of complaints by neighbours. A traumatised Singaravelu then lodged a report at Tampin police station. The next day, he was shocked to find Johnny's carcass in a jungle near Taman Batu Belang. He then brought the remains back and held a

small funeral. Four months later, Tampin Municipal Council refuted allegations its enforcement officers shot the licensed dog within a private compound. A probe by their internal investigation committee reportedly showed the dog-shooting

operation stemmed from complaints by the public regarding dogs roaming the area. Council secretary Zulhilmi Marzuki had told The Malay Mail the committee concluded the enforcement team had performed their duties within existing laws and regulations.

'Contagion' at film fest

Al Pacino's 'blank' future

Movie on lethal virus mimics real-life scenario

FROM Hong Kong to Chicago and across to London, the world descends into chaos when a lethal virus sweeps the planet in Steven Soderbergh's thriller Contagion, screening at the Venice Film Festival. "Contact with another person will likely seal your demise. You cannot be courageous, or you'll die," said actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays one of the first victims of the killer bug, which leaves riots and hysteria in its wake. Released in the midst of a real-life banking crisis, with riots across parts of Europe and growing fears of biological terrorism, the film depicts a breakdown in trust across all parts of society that evokes

contemporary anxieties. The Academy Awardwinning director said he had been drawn to the idea of showing people struggling with a real-world problem, especially one with a ticking clock, where the stakes could not be higher. Paltrow's on-screen husband, Matt Damon, watches helplessly as his wife returns from a trip to Hong Kong with flu-like symptoms which quickly worsen, leaving him to protect his 15-year-old daughter alone, as fear grips the world. "Day Two" is when it all begins, with close-up shots in an airport of hands touching mouths, glasses and doorknobs, waiters sneezing and

victims travelling home to fall ill in London, Hong Kong and Minneapolis. The story's multiple threads criss cross as the World Health Organisation and US Centres for Disease Control scramble into action, while activist blogger Jude Law sniffs out the story and accuses the authorities of a cover up. "Steven's movies don't leave any fat on the bone. The pace mirrors the progression of the infection itself and how things spiral quickly out of control," Damon said. Acts of heroic selflessness in the midst of the pandemic are overshadowed by violence as people fight each other for food rations and bleak scenes where survivors wander gar-

bage-strewn streets and arm themselves against looters. Based on real scientific research and advice from world-class experts in the field of infectious diseases, the film shows how "a virus could infiltrate the population in staggering numbers," said producer Michael Shamberg. In its wake, "the familiar suddenly becomes unfamiliar and you're afraid to go back into your own house and see your friends." Script writer Scott Burns said the idea for the killer epidemic was partly based on research into how the real-life outbreak of SARS in China in 2003 likely developed and spread from Hong Kong's livestock wet markets. — AFP

Eddie Murphy front-runner to host 84th Academy Awards BRETT Ratner is producing the 84th Academy Awards ceremony this year, and apparently Eddie Murphy (pic) is the person he will be putting forward to host the awards to Academy president Tom Sherak. It should not come as a huge surprise to learn Ratner is favouring Murphy, as the pair recently worked together on upcoming comedy Tower Heist, a kind of every man's Ocean's Eleven, according to Deadline. With his background in stand-up comedy, Murphy could certainly bring a bit of much needed energy to the proceedings, not to mention a welcome smattering of 'edge.' Some rumour sites are reporting Murphy's role as a done deal, although there is no official confirmation yet. Oscars favourite, Billy Crystal, is expected to be involved in some capacity. Eddie Murphy received a Best Supporting Actor nomination from the Academy for Dreamgirls in 2007. Tower Heist opens on Nov 4.

A M E R IC A N mov i e st ar Al Pacino said his future was "blank" and criticised his latest directorial effort, Salome yesterday, ahead of the film's public screening at the Venice film festival. The Godfather star is in Venice to receive the "Glory to the Filmmaker" award for artistes who have left an original mark on contemporary cinema, but said he had "no idea" where he had been going with his latest work. "I didn't know where I was going, I'm confused," he said about Salome, a documentary and feature film melange based on Oscar Wilde’s play, the biblical tale of Salome and King Herod which explores the destructive use of sexuality. Pacino becomes both creator and protagonist, as he do cuments the challenges of making the film, while playing himself, King Herod and, in one scene, Oscar Wilde, with rising star Jessica Chastain in the role of Salome. His obsession with Wilde, an Irish writer who was imprisoned and sentenced to two years hard labour for gross indecency with other men, underpins the film. The Help' tops 'The Debt' at box office IN the movie world, The Help, a drama about AfricanAmerican housekeepers employed in the US south before the Civil Rights era, topped weekend box sales for a third straight week, industry estimates showed yesterday. The Disney film brought in an estimated US$14.2 million(RM42.1m) in receipts, only slightly less than the previous weekend, for a total to date of US$118.6 million, according to initial figures from movie data tracker Exhibitor Relations. The film, a largely unheralded summer hit, comfortably held off The Debt, an Israeli espionage thriller starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren, which grossed US$9.7

million in its first weekend. The Debt is the latest hit from the critically-acclaimed Focus Features label that produced and distributed low-budget successes The American and Syriana, both starring George Clooney. Apollo 18, about a disputed 1974 mission to the Moon, opened in third place, returning US$8.7 million, and Shark Night 3D took fourth, with US$8.6 million, according to the preliminary figures. SHISHAN (Libya)

No way out

Talks fail for surrender of Libya loyalist bastion NEGOTIATIONS for the surrender of Muammar Gaddafi's forces in the Libyan town of Bani Walid failed yesterday and will not resume, an official said, opening the way for a military attack. "I am leaving the military commander to resolve the problem," said Abdullah Kenshil, the chief negotiator for the anti-Gaddafi National Transitional Council (NTC). The town southeast of Tripoli is one of the last strongholds of pro-Gaddafi fighters where at least one of the ousted despot's sons is reputed to be hiding. Kenshil said the fighters had wanted to come out with their weapons but were refused. "They demanded that the revolutionaries enter Bani Walid without their weapons," he added, charging that it was a pretext for an ambush. Kenshil also said Gaddafi himself, his sons and many of his family had been in Bani Walid, without specifying when. Some had left but two

of Gaddafi's sons, Saadi and Mutassim, are suspected of still being there. Negotiations through the intermediary of tribal leaders began several days ago with the hope of taking Bani Walid without bloodshed. Meanwhile NTC military spokesman Ahmed Omar Bani confirmed earlier reports of the death of Gaddafi's son Khamis, and said that the son of the strongman's spy master Abdullah Senussi, was also killed. "I can confirm that Khamis and Mohammed Senussi were both killed around Tarhuna," he told reporters in Benghazi, adding that Khamis had been buried near Bani Walid and Mohammed in southern Libya. Khamis, 28, the youngest son of Gaddafi, commanded a brigade seen as the most effective and loyal force of the Libyan leader. Rebel fighters captured its base south of Tripoli in fierce

Home trial wanted for Gaddafi IN London, Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) spokesman Guma alGamaty said that when captured, Gaddafi should stand trial in Libya and not at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague that has issued an arrest warrant for suspected crimes against humanity committed during the uprising. "The ICC will only put Gaddafi on trial for crimes committed over the last six months," Gamaty told BBC television. "Gaddafi is responsible for a horrific catalogue of crimes committed over the last 42 years, which he should stand trial for and answer for and he can only answer for those in a proper trial in Libya itself." Gamaty said it would be up to the court to determine whether a death sentence was appropriate for Gaddafi, but added: "The court will be fair and just and will meet all international standards. "It will be a fair trial — something that Gaddafi has never offered any Libyans who criticised him over the last 42 years." Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini warned against too thorough a purge of Gaddafi appointees in the Libyan apparatus, pointing to the chaos that had ensued in Iraq when even low-ranking officials of Saddam Hussein's Baath party were stripped of their jobs after the 2003 US-led invasion. — AFP

fighting last week. Bani Walid is the heartland of the powerful Warfalla tribe, which made up the core of Gaddafi's army and was given top political positions within the regime. But it has split over whether to back Gaddafi or not, said tribesmen who have sided with the NTC and are among the NTC forces besieging the town. Kenshil said earlier that the pro-Kadhafi forces numbered between 30 and 50 men, "very well-armed, with machineguns, rocket-launchers and snipers." Anti-Kadhafi fighters had previously moved to within 15 to 20 kilometres of Bani Walid with a view to launching an assault if the talks broke down. Civilians coming from Bani Walid said most of Kadhafi's forces had now fled, taking their heavy weaponry with them into the surrounding mountains. — AFP

Flash floods in Louisiana after storm Lee hits TROPICAL Storm Lee yesterday brought torrential rains and flash flooding to the US Gulf Coast after making landfall near New Orleans, the latest bad weather to batter the country. Louisiana's governor declared a state of emergency, saying flooding was the state's "primary concern" after Lee came ashore 80km southwest of Lafayette, packing sustained winds of 45mph. T he Mi am i - b as e d Nat i ona l Hurricane Center said the storm was slowly moving northward and was expected to turn east-northeast later yesterday, a week after Hurricane Irene battered America's east coast causing devastation. President Barack Obama, speaking in Paterson, New Jersey where he viewed damage, met with distraught residents and was briefed on response and recovery efforts, pledged that "all those communities that have been affected" by storms would be supported. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency in several counties, urging residents to not underestimate the impact of Lee. Tornado warnings were also issued from Louisiana to Florida as the storm's powerful winds knocked down power lines and blocked roads with fallen trees. Oil companies on Saturday evacu-

Chile mourns plane crash victims CHILE yesterday declared two days of national mourning for today and tomorrow after rescuers gave up hope for 21 people believed killed when an air force plane crashed off Robinson Crusoe island in the Pacific. The tragedy has prompted nationwide grief and only four bodies have been recovered since the CASA 212 turbo-prop plane, believed to have been thrown off course by strong winds, went down late Friday during a failed attempt to land. The search resumed yesterday but Chilean officials said earlier there was no hope of finding survivors as all on board would have died on impact. Thousands gathered at state broadcaster TVN to remember daily morning talk show host Felipe Camiroaga, who was traveling to the island with a crew to report on reconstruction efforts after a massive earthquake and tsunami caused devastation last year. — AFP

Haiti faces political setback HAITI'S caretaker prime minister warned that day-today government in the quakeravaged country has been snarled by a political impasse between the new president and an opposition-controlled parliament."Cohabitation is too sophisticated for Haiti," said Prime Minister JeanMax Bellerive told media on Saturday. "The system is appropriate for countries that have strong, well organised political parties." Nearly four months after Michel Martelly was sworn in as president of Haiti on May 14, the popular former singer, elected by a wide margin, has not yet succeeded in putting his own government in place. GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel's party suffered an electoral setback in her home State yesterday, two years before a national vote. Key opposition parties took votes from her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) in the poll, the latest in a string of poor election results this year. According to exit polls released by TV channel ARD, the CDU won 23.3 per cent in elections in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, an embarrassing decline on the 28.8 per cent they won in 2006. As expected, the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) was the strongest party, with 36.6 per cent of the vote. — AFP

A night of Carnatic music By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my FANS of traditional music were in for a treat when India’s most well-known musicians graced the stage at Merdeka Hall, Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, last week. The Charity Gala Premier featured a long but enriching experience of musical delights of the Carnatic kind. In its sixth edition, India Beat 6, as it is known, was a collection of artistic talents from India. Many of them were considered the forerunners of his or her own

ENTRANCING: Shobana enthralls audiences through the intricate steps of the classical dance

discipline. In the past 15 years, similar concerts had been held five times in Kuala Lumpur but this year's concert was the biggest one yet as it featured 14 top carnatic artistes from all over India. Organised by Datuk Dr P. S. Nathan, president of Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress, the two-day musical affair was also aimed at raising funds for the the Temple of Fine Arts Kidney Dialysis Centre and the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress. While they are well-known in India, these top artistes had never had the chance to perform together in their homeland. Brought together to perform for India Beat 6, these musicians wowed both new and loyal Carnatic music lovers alike over two days of blissful

deep-rooted music in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The concert was also aimed at educating youths about classical Indian music and the Tamil language, which is declining in interest, particularly among those below 45. Although many in the audience consisted of the older generation, it was heart-warming to see many youngsters at the gala premier charity concert. Many were dressed in traditional Indian attire, embracing the theme of the night. Among the highlights of Friday evening’s performance were the nine artistes performing on western instruments (mandolin, saxophone, guitar, violin and piano) with the exception of Maestro Shashank, who played the Krishna-ageold Indian instrument — the flute. Considered one of the best bamboo flautists around, Maestro Shashank stole the limelight during the first performance of the evening. The talented flautist, who has collaborated with big names like tabla master Zakir Hussain and guitarist John McLaughlin, showed he could make it work with Akkarai Subhalaakshmi (violin), Bakthavathsalam (mridangam) and Radhakrishnan (ghatam). Collectively

(and individually), the foursome gave the audience an insight into South India's classical music. The next performance saw the vocal talents of Sikkil Gurucharan (grandson of Sikkil Kunjumani, eldest of the internationally acclaimed flautists Sikkhil Sisters) collaborating with pianist Anil Srinivasan (a classical pianist from Columbia University, New York). Having worked together in the past, the musical chemistry between Anil and Gurucharan

was evident and moved many in the audience. In the following performance, fans were treated to a rousing routine by two percussionists — Bakthavathsalam (mridangam) and Radhakrishnan (ghatam) as they combined beats with guitarist Prasanna. Having performed at over 20,000 concerts across the world, Prasanna demonstrated his undisputed skills on guitar while Bakthavathsalam and Radhakrishnan’s

second act gave percussion fans among the audience a highly rhythmic experience. While the show was lengthy, fans were kept at the edge of their seats listening to the allure of Carnatic sounds. The musicians themselves showed unbridled passion. When the India Beat 6 show continued for a second day, it drew great interest from many Bharatanatyam fans in the Klang Valley. Before the world famous Shobana Chandrakumar took to the stage, Kadri Gopalnath (saxophone), Kanyakumari (violin), Bakthavathsalam (mridangam), Radhakrishnan (mridangam (ghatam) and Rajashekar (ghatam (morsing) entertained the (morsing audience. But all eyes trained on Shobana as she entered the stage. As one of the highlights of the year’s programme, the actress and Bharatanatyam dancer mesmerised the audience with her dance skills. Together with Radha Badri (vocals), Srividya (nattuvangam), Ramakrish(nattuvangam nan ((mridangam) and Venkatasubramaniam (violin), the Shobana gave the audience a chance to enjoy the combination of movement and music. But music once again took the spotlight with the skills of Mandolin Maestros U Shrinivas and U Rajesh (mandolin) with Bakthavathsalam ((mridangam) and Vijay Ghate dangam (tabla) who ended the (tabla second night and the performance of India Beat 6 with gusto.

Spotlight on Yuna WELL, what do you know? Yuna, the YouTube sensation who captivated many with her uplifting compositions, is creating history of her own. The young singer-songwriter who is currently based in Los Angeles, and working on her first international release is going to have her own showcase at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP). She is going to be among the selected few who have been chosen to be a part of DFP’s Spotlight series. Yuna’s showcase on Sept 13 at 8.30pm will also mark the beginning of DFP’s new season (2011/2012). For her debut performance, she has carefully hand-picked songs that will showcase her musicality. The repertoire will include Cinta Di Hari Raya, Fears & Frustrations, Come As You Are, Memo, Cinta Sempurna, Gelora Jiwa, Penakut, Rocket, Let Love Come Through, Coffee and

Gadis Semasa. She will be backed by her band comprising Farhan Fadzlishah (guitar), Efry Arwis (bass), Adil Ali (drums), Mohd Said Shafiq (second guitar) and Adam Shahrir (keyboard). Yuna was discovered on Myspace before becoming a household name. The DFP showcase will certainly be a great milestone for the singer-songwriter whose real name is Yunalis Zarai. Yuna started out by writing poetry when she was 14. Five years later, she began writing songs when a friend taught her how to play simple chords on the guitar. She also took piano lessons when she was seven. Most of her songs are in English, although she tries to write more Malay songs. With folk rock, acoustic and alternative elements, she is inspired by the music that

she grew up with such as The Cardigans, Fiona Apple, No Doubt, Garbage, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Silverchair and other bands of the 1990s. Yuna’s meteoric rise into the local independent scene is largely owed to the strong following she gained through her Myspace Music account. It is hard to resist the charm she enthuses in her music, causing her daily listenership to increase significantly, which is an astonishing feat by a local act. Performing at many concerts and gigs since the release of her Demo in 2008, she then took the nation by storm with her debut EP of the same title that same year. Her latest CD entitled Decorate, was released last year and it was recorded both in Kuala Lumpur and Los Angeles. Yuna has made notable

Astro’s marketing style, however, raises questions as well as eye SO have all of you had your fix of satay, ketupat, lemang, beef rendang and more over the Aidilfitri period? We bet you have. And, speaking of beef, we’re having one too with some folks at Astro. After the critically-acclaimed release of P.Ramlee... Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti : Satu Indiepretasi — a project spearheaded by XFM, the 100 per cent Malaysian content radio arm under Astro’s AMP, it looks like the vultures have

started circling. Now we hear another “Indiepretasi” is rolling out and though while the first act featured the hottest names among the independent and crossover acts to tingle the senses of music lovers — this time, there’s a seriously strange mix of names. Perhaps due to the success of the “Indiepretasi” branding, some powers that be at Astro appear to have “hijacked” the project. And while it is worth celebrating the

names that are in like Tilu, Drama Bingit, Najwa Mahiaddin, Azlan & The Typewriter, we can’t help but question the inclusion of several other names. Indeed, just what is so “indie” about names like Suki Low, Hafiz Suip, Adira Suhaimi and Hazama Azmi, despite their immense talents? The inclusion of the final three names can be seen as a desperate attempt by Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (the supposedly-defunct,

Starring Zizan Razak, Juliana Evans, Jue Aziz, Dottie and Tai, the film managed to attract more than 200,000 to the cinemas on the first two days. Actor Gambit Saifullah ruffled a few feathers among his following when he likened some of his fans to “dogs and pigs”, and called them shallow in a status update over social networking site, Facebook. Needless to say, he got an earful and deleted the comment. Shortly after, within a day or so, Gambit made a general apology and also specifically to his fans saying that he should have been more matured and behaved more professionally. You think?

Not lost in translation MISS Fabulosity made everyone’s holiday period a tad sweeter when she tweeted Aidilfitri greetings, and then followed them up with National Day greetings to Malaysians. This is not the first time Kimora has revealed her fascination for all things Malaysian. The former model, author, and former president and Creative Director for Phat Fashions has, over the last

couple of years, fervently tweeted greetings especially to Malaysians. She also randomly communicates with Malaysian followers in smatterings of Bahasa Malaysia. Meanwhile, some of our local celebs proudly communicate solely in broken English — go figure.

Generosity on the ‘rice’

JAMAL: Big-hearted gesture

WHILE most celebrities just tend to pose for photos at the most opportune of moments with orphans and such in the lead-up to celebrations such as Aidilfitri, singer Jamal Abdillah showed what a truly generous soul is made of. He prepared over 1,500

It looks like local talents will always be considered unworthy of headlining acts, even if the show is supposed to feature Malaysiana. THERE’S a first time to everything. For new South Korean up-andcoming star, Bang Sung Hoon, being an actor wasn’t what he initially had in mind. The 28-year-old had always wanted to be a professional swimmer, competing in international events. However, due to an unforeseen incident, Sung Hoon had to let go of his dream. For the new actor, when one door closes, another opens. “After my dream to be a professional swimmer was shelved, I instantly knew I wanted to be an actor. Through the help of my agent, I was able

to fulfill my dream,” he said. Set in the modern society of Korea today, New Gisaeng Story tells a tale about Dan Sa Ran (Im Soo Hyang), who is a dance major in a local college. Wherever she goes, she draws attention, particularly from men, who are mesmerised by her beauty. However, her life has been a series of uphill battles after the death of her mother. She then falls for Da Mo (Sung Hoon), who comes from well-to-do family, but can only watch helplessly as the La La (Han Hye Lin), who also comes from a rich family, tries to win over Da Mo’s heart. At the same time, Sa Ran’s

EPIC: A scene from 'New Gisaeng Story'

SO one of the gossips bandied about of late is that this actor is definitely making a comeback. After tying the knot, we hear his significant other had imposed that he give up his craft totally — out of suspicion he might be

interacting with other women. Of late, however, the wife has taken a step back and has allowed him to continue screenwork— but not before imposing several rules. This includes no physical contact of any sort with female counterparts before the camera, while scripts have to be vetted for romantic content to ensure hubby doesn’t get too intimate with female co-stars.

potential to become a popular gisaeng (a performer similar to Japanese geisha) is discovered by Buyonggak, the last Gisaeng house in the country. There she will live through the romance, sadness and pain that only these entertainers for the rich will experience. Lady luck was definitely smiling on the actor when he was chosen to play the male lead in the new Korean drama New Gisaeng Story. “My character, Ah Da Mo is someone who is very bold and full of confidence. The character hides his true feelings, which is quite similar to my own personality. However, I have my utmost respect for all the women out there, and it’s not like what the drama has depicted,” he said. The actor also said it had been an honour playing Ah Da Mo in New Gisaeng Story. “I gave my 100 per cent to bring my character to life, and this being my first drama, I did not know how to act,” he joked. “It sort of helped me not to be nervous sometimes.” Sung Hoon also talked about his most demanding moments

more like being in a volcano. The night was filled with warmth, fuelled by Yeung’s highly energetic performance. Yeung changed into eight different costumes at least to make her performance truly unforgettable. Each costume change depicted the mood of her set of songs. Amidst the crazy lighting and awesome choreography, Yeung hit all the right chords with her great vocal skills. Her voice might have been described as subtle, but still, it managed to pack a few “deadly” punches that vibrated throughout the hall, especially during slow numbers and ballads. The singer also turned one segment of the show into a “mini karaoke” game by letting her fans pick and choose whatever songs they wanted to hear. The hardcore fans especially, kept requesting songs (and more songs), and Yeung pleased them all. She even sang tunes that were not in the initial rundown. “It’s indeed great to see all of you here. I know some of you drove for an hour from the city

to see me. Thank you for coming. Really, thank you for coming and for your support all this while,” she said as she bowed gratituously. Another highlight of the show was when Yeung challenged herself to play a pink electric guitar during a fast tempo song. The short but sweet “jam session” with the accompanying band got the fans into shouting frenzy. The pinnacle came right before the night was over. It was during the final encore when Yeung changed into her last costume —a black satin dress with black blooming flowers. The dress, which resembled a traditional Chinese qipao, was a nice touch in this last segment of the concert. She sang in the most perfect of pitches too. Yeung, who showed onstage charisma, sang 30 of her own songs. While many thought the concert was too short, the effect was certainly lasting. Everything moved at a steady pace. Her third stop of her world tour was certainly unforgettable. If only there were two or three shows during the leg, many more would get to enjoy her music. No? — By LOONG WAI TING

Cartoons come to life on stage By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my WHO would have guessed that a world of Toontown would resemble the realities of life? In Steve Yockey’s Cartoon, there are plenty of politics, scheming and violence in Toontown, much like everyday life. Directed by Kelvin Wong, who came up with the sketchcomedy routine Indicinelive!, the colourful production is the first of its kind to play outside the United States and

LOOKALIKE: Jabar as Suitor

performed with punch in the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac). Played through a series of TV episodes, Cartoon is a ludicrous, hilarious response of the powers of media, politics and consumer giants through an in-your-face satire of a totalitarian world. Set in the ubiquitous Toontown, the clockwork world of its citizens changes when the mischievous urchin Trouble, steals the oversized sledgehammer from the bratty,

Hitler-esque Esther, who uses it to command her subjects. As theme songs come to a halt, paranoia and violence is rampant as a band of mismatched cartoon stereotypes go on a wild goose chase while finding themselves increasingly stuck in an existential rut. If this sounds like a lot to take in, then that is exactly how it feels at the beginning of the play. Colourful toonizens wake up at the sound of the alarm clock, assume their

TOONIZEN: Tan as Rockstar (left)

positions and sing and dance along to the annoyingly chirpy theme song, not once but twice. Just when you wonder what is going on, the action starts and things kick up a notch from there. With a name like Trouble, it is hardly surprising that he turns Toontown topsy-turvy, but he has his reasons too. Fed up with the monotonous life they lead under the thumb of girl-scout lookalike Esther, he takes matter into his own hands. Unknown to him, his crazy actions cause the toonizens to question their freedom and Esther’s authority. What is interesting in Cartoon is that while the characters may look like your typical cartoon characters, they are certainly a lot of more. With thoughts and attitudes that reflect real life and its frustrations, their dialogues are a lot deeper than it seems. Watching Cartoon is like stepping into an alternative universe where things are

AUTHORITY FIGURE: Ng as Esther (right)

familiar albeit with a touch of zaniness. The unique experience is further enriched with cartoon characters we have grown up with. One thing is evident as the play progresses. Violence, at the end of the day, is closer to us than we think. The cast of Cartoon are energetic, vociferous and colourful even though it was a dark comedy. Presenter and host Grace Ng stands out as

Esther, with the ability to blurt out advertisements seemingly at the speed of light. Other cast members give good presentations of their cartoon alter-egos including Alexis Wong, Lorna Hoong, Jabar Laura, UiHua and Freddy Tan. Both Amanda Ang and Matthew Ong are credible new comers, as indie singer-songwriter Rashdan Harith’s cameo appearance caused quite a stir among music lovers.

The end of Meet Uncle Hussain? By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my

CHANGING PARTNERS: Taja (fourth from left) with some of his former and current band members

nied the rumour. “After Hazama parted ways with us, we were forced to recruit someone else as we had already committed to an appearance with TV3’s Muzik Muzik. “After running through a few names, Nubhan was selected based on similarities to Hazama’s vocals with regards to the context of Pokok.” Nubhan, however, is not a choice of a fixture for MUH because despite Taja's praises for his potential, the singer is not vocally apt to execute the repertoire of the band. “He can carry Pokok, but he won’t be able to carry other MUH songs, so we have to consider that, in making him a temp. Otherwise, it would be more cruel to go on and make him look bad for not being able to measure up to the others who have interpreted our songs so well.” So just what are MUH looking for in a vocalist, and why is it so difficult to lock one down to front the band? “We know our strength is our awareness in ensuring our vocalist would be able to shoulder the burden of responsibility, which is to have the vocalist ‘represent’ the band. “The vocalist is at the forefront of everything, and because of that belief, Untukmu, Drama King and Pokok were certified hits.” The difficulty he said, arose from the fact that none could be seen as capable enough to shoulder the responsibility. “We know real talents don’t come forward, and those who

want the limelight are mostly just in it for that. “We want real thinking singers, like Faizal Tahir for example, who is able to bring something extra to the songs. If we don’t get a vocalist by the next Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL), that’ll be the end of the road for MUH.” The deadline will thus comes at a time when the band will be rolling out a reality show. “The reality show is our last attempt to try and salvage things, and I hope we can get a vocalist who will fit the bill so we can to keep the band going. “Due to the the TV station’s schedule, the search for our new singer will only go on next year, after AJL and that is why we still have to continue putting out singles, with Nubhan temporarily filling the spot.” No band can claim such misfortune, and Taja may have an answer as to why. It may be because of the band being named Best New Artistes at the 16th Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) in 2009! “I guess it is because we won Best New Artiste,” he laughed. “Isn’t that award jinxed?” There may be truth in that urban legend as most winners disappear without a trace post the validation. Taja laughs some more, and said the real reason would most probably be simpler and less superstitious. “I think the problem is that we’re on our own, without any sort of financial support, and we’re also very critical in looking for a vocalist who is out-

standing and different.” Meanwhile, Taja said with the emergence and dominance of new and fresh acts, the rift between the old and new school of music in the local music industry was ‘dangerous’. “When there’s something new, the elders will always find it hard to accept. But the new talents themselves have to know how to better themselves, and not remain static and continue to innovate. But everyone is in danger of that, of being static and not progressing. “The elders are mostly comfortable with the past and just cannot accept change.” It is a known fact that the networking among the new breed of singer-songwriters and indie crossovers into the mainstream is a boon to the business, but the separation between them and the veterans is hurting the business. “The fact remains that the seniors shouldn’t put down newcomers for whatever lack of technical knowledge. “Back then, you had to learn the ropes of arrangement and such, but now with technology, there’s a shortcut when it comes to experience and know-how and I think that’s not a real problem to the point of disrespect. Basically if they mean well, they wouldn’t be putting newcomers down.” With some amount of ‘discrimination’ towards the new school of acts in Malaysian music, Taja warned of a "brain drain". “The best part is when it

Yuna Room Records are good examples of indie labels. However there are many who open one at a whim without proper planning, just based on the individual’s name. “And yes, many of them do need to brush up on their necessary skills and knowledge too.” He also said audiences too need to understand their role in development of music in Malaysia. “Audiences have to change, as we don’t have a culture of appreciation. I mean, songs that have not been mixed or mastered can actually become hits, which is a joke. “That’s the difference between us and Indonesia — appreciation.”

HOW TO PLAY Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

FRIDAY'S SOLUTION

TEN years with no album in sight, and yet a string of hits that would make even the most seasoned campaigners in the music industry turn green with envy? Meet Uncle Hussain (MUH) has the bragging rights to one of the few acts who fit into that bill. Saddled by endless controversies, especially regarding the departure of their frontmen over the past few years, the possible untimely demise of the band was always in the air. Or so the critics would think, though in recent days, it wouldn't be too bad a guess. Band leader and guitarist Nik Mustaza Nik Mustapha, otherwise known as Taja agreed that the band’s day may just be numbered. That is, IF their last ditch attempt to secure a permanent vocalist by next year fails. Sitting down with The Malay Mail, Taja said disbanding MUH was a thought that had crossed his mind. “It has come to me several times that that would be the easier choice, as I really am frustrated. Still, thinking of how far we have come, with so little at our disposal, MUH is a brand that has come a long way to establish itself and it would be a shame to end it all.” “Even though we haven’t even had an album, we’re lucky that our singles have always been well-received.” With a sigh, MUH will trudge on a little longer even if it continues with being "unlucky" for personal reasons. “If nothing else, personally I look at MUH as a platform for my songs to be heard,” said the much sought-after composer after a string of offerings that have struck a chord with local music lovers — the latest being Pokok. MUH is now on to their fourth vocalist fronting the act, after Lan pulled out and formed Azlan & The Typewriter, with Black being unable to commit due to his own personal career schedule. Hazama is now tied to Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd after winning Akademi Fantasia 9 and Nubhan only being a temporary filler to help the band promote Pokok. Despite the many rumours that Nubhan was the band's choice to settle the score with Hazama who "deserted" them, Taja shook his head and de-

comes to that — the alienation of newcomers, the young generation will struggle and end up going places. “Going against the grain is never easy, but the likes of Yuna and Hujan have proven their hard work is starting to show with acceptance beyond the Malaysian market alone.” However that means, Malaysia will musically continue to be stuck at the same level, as progressive and innovative acts feel more snug and at home abroad where they are being appreciated, without regards to local music industry politics. New acts too, should learn a thing or two, pointed out Taja. “Not everyone can open a label, and Morning Rocket and

WELCOME ABOARD: Kam (centre) is delighted that KLRC has been able to rope in Fairuzizuan (left) and Zakry

PETALING JAYA

Is Razif back?

Former badminton ace in hot seat to coach doubles team at KLRC THE focus was supposed to be on Fairuzizuan Tazari and Zakry Abdul Latif announcing their partnership with KLRC. Instead, many were fixated with former national badminton ace Razif Sidek. As Razif joined BA of Malaysia (BAM) high-performance director Datuk James Selvaraj at the KLRC Hari Raya open house yesterday, speculation was rife that the former doubles expert could be coaching the doubles team at KLRC. After all, Razif played 'Cupid' b etween Fair uzizuan-Z akr y and the club. He also gave the duo pointers for their training programme as Fairuzizuan and Zakry pledged their commit-

ment of earning enough points to secure a spot at the London Olympics next year. The other full-time doubles pair in KLRC are Gan Teik Chai and Bin Shen. Razif told The Malay Mail about his intentions to serve the club. "If there is a possibility, why not? I've done this (coaching) before and would like to contribute back to the sport," he said. "I'm here to help Fairuzizuan and Zakry. I could play an advisory role or follow the players for tournaments... it all depends

on what KLRC and the players want." Razif is no stranger to the coaching scene. He guided Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock to win the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Sadly, he did not see eye to eye with BAM then and left the stable. He tried to make a comeback within the national body but failed. "They (BAM) don't want to understand me... but it's okay," he said. The only form of coaching he does today is by molding his seven-year-old son Muhammad Fazriq. He hopes Fazriq would continue the Sidek legacy.

RAZIF

KLRC director Datuk Seri Andrew Kam welcomed the prospect of Razif playing a more important role in the club. "There's always room for discussion. Razif was a formidable player himself," said Andrew. "We are very open with our approach. At the end of the day, it is about developing the sport we love." The focus then quickly turned to James as the coaching and training committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday. Could James be jumping ship as well? "The meeting will allow me to gauge my future with BAM," said James, without elaborating further.

'We just want to move on'

We just want to close this chapter and move on. I think that's best for all parties concerned — Gan Teik Chai

COULD there be a happy ending after all? That will be answered when the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) play mediator between KLRC doubles players Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen and the BA of Malaysia (BAM) at Wisma OCM today. Teik Chai and Bin Shen are hoping for a positive outcome but stopped short from revealing their expectations. They were disappointed after BAM dropped them in favour of lower ranked Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thein How from the World Championships in London last month. Z akr y-Thein How lost to Taiwanese pair Fang Chieh Min

and Lee Shen Mu in the second round of the world meet. BAM could end up compensating the pair by sponsoring them for several tournaments till the end of the year. This also occured during Roslin Hashim's predicament not too long ago. BAM had then funded Roslin, who was also an independent player, for a l l t he remaining Super Series tournaments throughout the year after they accidentally omitted his name from two Super Series tournaments in May 2007. An apology from the national body could also help soothe the pain. "We've informed BAM and

OCM of our grouses and expectations. I don't want to reveal what we have discussed but I do hope for a good outcome in the meeting (today)," said Teik Chai. "We just want to close this chapter and move on. I think that's best for all parties concerned." Bin Shen, meanwhile, maintained this episode will not sour their relationship with BAM. "We will work together with BAM in the future. If BAM require our services, we will surely help. "We are playing for the country. And at the end of the day, it is about representing Malaysia," he said.

BACK ON TARGET: Haslisa is determined to bounce back from being left out of the Jakarta Sea Games

The end of season break has rejuvenated us, says Mohd Nor SIME Darby FC captain Mohd Nor Ismail (pic) is hoping they can pull off an upset or two in the Malaysia Cup. The KL-based club have been drawn alongside FA Cup champions Terengganu, Negri Sembilan and Premier League champions PKNS. On paper, the two Super League sides, Terengganu and Negri, are fancied to progress into the knock-out stages but Mohd Nor, 29, believes in his teammates. "The end of season break has rejuvenated us. I am confident my teammates can rise to the challenge," he said. "We have been gelling more as a unit and the players are comfortable with the strategies planned for the

Malaysia Cup." However, he admits it will be an arduous task considering PKNS will be out to make a statement of intent for their Super League campaign next year. PKNS beat Sime Darby home and away in the league but only by narrow margins. "We are not far off compared to them. We only lost by a goal in both the matches we've played so far," said Mohd Nor. Sime Darby were only formed last year, with their journey being a fairytale one. The club finished top of the

Web crash bane to fans

THE two official websites for Malaysian football is non-existent! Not that there never was one but the websites just cannot be accessed at present time. This startling fact cropped up when The Malay Mail tried to retrieve information on the Malaysia Cup. "This Account Has Been Suspended" was the message on the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) website, www.fam.org.my. Media and Public Relations Committee chairman Datuk Subahan Kamal

was unaware of the situation. "The problem is probably with the main server. Anyhow, there are more important issues that we n e e d t o a d d re s s , " s a i d Subahan. With the dwindling of attendance during local matches, an up-to-date and running website is needed so that fans can obtain information easily. Meanwhile, the official website for the league and cup matches, www.malaysiansuperleague.com, carried the following message: "This

domain is parked, pending renewal, or has expired". The Super League website is run by FAM's commercial subsidiary, Malaysian Super League Sdn Bhd. Its CEO Stuart R amalingam told The Malay Mail: "Our IT team are aware of this and are working to get it back online as soon as possible. Hopefully, it is back running tomorrow morning." Apparently, such occurrences was nothing new. An insider at FAM told The Malay Mail that it is also possible the websites crashed due to heavy traffic,

just like how it did when Malaysia played Singapore in the World Cup 2014 Asian Zone qualifiers in July. With the Malaysia Cup starting tomorrow, it is rather embarrassing that no official information can be retrieved through the virtual world. The only resort is through betting websites and local sports blogs. However, some of these c annot b e relie d on as Malaysian football has a tendency of having impromptu changes to fixtures such as kick-off times.

Down but not out By KAMARUZAMAN AHMAD kamaruzaman@mmail.com.my

LACK of consistency caused national shooter Haslisa Hamed to miss the Jakarta Sea Games in November. The Ipoh-born lass, 25, was booted out in favour of her more illustrious teammates Nur Suryani Taibi, Nur Ayunie, Nur'ain Ibrahim and Muslifah Zulkifli. ''I was not able to maintain my consistency and lost out on a place in the team for Jakarta. I achieved the qualifying mark in the Tun Haniff Trophy last month but was informed that it was too late," said Haslisa. "I was told that the national shooting body had already submitted the names of the team in the rifle category. "Another factor was the

inconsistency in my performances this year compared to the other shooters," said Haslisa, who is attached to the Royal Malaysian Navy. However, she is not losing sleep over it despite winning a goal (team-rifle prone) and bronze (3-position rifle) in her Sea Games debut in Korat two years ago. She was also a team member at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last year and now hopes to qualify for the Asian championships in Kuwait in October. But first she has to earn it by doing well in the Southeast Asia Shooting Association (Seasa) championship in Laos and in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy in Malacca next month.

Lorenzo shows who's boss CHAMPION Jorge Lorenzo ended Casey Stoner's winning streak with a dominant victory in the San Marino Misano yesterday. Australian Stoner had won the previous three races but could only finish third, with Dani Pedrosa second. Lorenzo took the lead at the first corner and held on to cut Stoner's championship lead to 35 points. "I really needed this victory. The last two races were a nightmare for me but this gets us back on track," Lorenzo told BBC Sport. Italian Marco Simoncelli finished fourth while Briton Cal Crutchlow came home in 10th. Stoner said the punishing

Jamaica Bolt to history Anchorman Usain helps Caribbeans smash relay record

SPRINT superstar Usain Bolt anchored Jamaica to a new world record of 37.04s as they won the men's 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Daegu yesterday. The Jamaican team, who also included world 100m champion Yohan Blake, outpaced France and St Kitts and Nevis. The United States of America crashed out after colliding with Britain, who dropped the baton, on the final changeover. Bolt, the double Olympic sprint champion and world record holder, teamed up with Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Blake to better the mark of 37.10s the Jamaicans ran to win gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Bolt, who ran the thirdleg in Beijing, took over the anchor role in the absence of injured former world record holder Asafa Powell and helped set the only world record at the 13th World Championships. "For me, it was just to go out there fast," said the 24-year-old. "We did just that. I am proud of my team. I am happy with myself. I enjoyed being the anchor. I had a little problem with my Achilles. I can't run the bend. It was decided I would run the anchor. Blake ran a great bend. I am happy with that." The 200m world champion also told BBC Radio 5: "We're natural born athletes. It's all about running fast. As long as we got the baton round, I had no doubts." On whether the best has yet to come from him, he said: "Definitely. As long as I get my season right, there's going to be great things." The controversy behind the Jamaicans occurred when America's third-leg runner Darvis Patton clipped Britain's fourth-leg athlete Harr y Aikines-Aryeetey as he came into the changeover zone. Patton tumble d w hi le Aikines-Aryeetey was put off his stride and the incoming Briton Marlon Devonish threw away the baton.

Moody warning for English rookies

ENGL AND captain and flanker Lewis Moody warned their young bloods they will need to grow up fast in New Zealand. He was in New Zealand previously as a member of Sir Clive Woodward’s 2005 Lions, and he admits it still gives him nightmares. "We can expect the toughest environment possibly imaginable for a rugby player," Moody told Daily Mirror. "My best way of describing the mood is that rugby in New Zealand is like football is in England — massive, the dominant sport. "We’ll get opinions from everywhere, from everyone — it’s rugby, rugby, rugby. You need to be strong. "Sometimes, you just have to be able to step away from that, which is why it’s great that we’ll have wives, partners and families coming over. It gives you normality," said Moody, also known as 'Mad Dog Moody'. In 2005, the Lions got thrashed 3-0 in the Tests, accompanied by the usual Kiwi gloating. Moody endured that misery, but was injured and missed the desperate 2008 England tour, tainted by

Moody

nproven accusations of rape u against a handful of young players. It was another grim affair on the field as well, as the series was lost 2-0. England head coach Martin Johnson is determined to treat his squad as adults. There’s no official booze ban, but the players know if they betray his trust they will be flying home before their hangover has gone. Moody accepts 2008 put down a serious marker for England squads in New Zealand. "Yeah, definitely. It served a good purpose to make us realise what it’s like to play in a place where rugby is the biggest and most popular sport," he said.

"The dangers are something that, as professionals, you’re all aware of. And, as individuals, we trust ourselves and we trust each other completely. We won’t be falling into any traps. "History shows that you just have to be sensible, professional athletes and get on with your job." Another lesson has been learned from England’s football team, and their ludicrous isolation policy during the 2010 World Cup in South A frica. Moody said: "You sometimes need things to be as normal as possible, rather than being surrounded by rugby, by each other and completely engulfed in it. "You need that time to step away — and you need to see your families." Moody, a hero of the 2003 World Cup triumph and a key member of the side who defied all predictions to reach the 2007 final before losing 15-6 to South Africa, hopes to lead the side in their opening Pool B match against Argentina on Saturday. Defence coach Mike Ford confirmed that Moody and scrumhalf Ben Youngs — recovering from knee injuries — will be in contention.

Loane backs Wallabies to come good

KILLER REPLACEMENT: Bolt anchored Jamaica to a recordbreaking win in the 4x100m relay final in Daegu in the absence of the injured Powell — AFPpic

"I don't think I went too soon," said Aikines-Areetey. "I felt someone hit me and then saw someone tumble over. As to why Marlon couldn't get the baton to me, I've no idea. "I just want to say sorry it happened. Two years ago, I anchored the team to bronze. I had visions of that again." In the women's 4x100m relay, the USA's individual 100m champion Carmelita Jeter held off Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown on the anchor-leg to win in a time of 41.56s. The Jamaicans took silver in 41.70s with Ukraine third in 42.51.

Meanwhile, Mariya Savinova produced a rousing finish to pip South Africa's Caster Semenya in the women's 800m final. Russian Tatyana Lysenko upset world record holder Betty Heidler to win the women's hammer. Lysenko, who returned from a two-year ban for doping in 2009, threw 77.13m on her third attempt to beat Germany's Heidler on 76.06m with China's Zhang Wenxiu third with 75.03m. The United States topped the medals standings with 12 golds, ahead of Russia with nine and Kenya with seven.

LEGEND Mark Loane says Australia may be coming good at the right time and has urged them to load up on their lineout at the World Cup. The world No 2 ranked Wallabies leave for New Zealand tomorrow and play their first pool game against Italy five days later. The Australians will be in upbeat mood after recording wins over South Africa and New Zealand in their last two games and winning their first Tri-Nations title in 10 years. Former captain and No 8 Loane, who played 28 Tests between 1973 and 1982, knows all about droughtbreaking efforts. He led Australia to their first Bledisloe Cup win in 1979 and was optimistic about the prospects of the current squad. "I think they may well be coming good at the correct time and I think we’ve got a pretty good draw," Loane told AAP, after he received the Joe French award for significant

contribution and service to Australian rugby. He targeted the lineout ahead of the scrum and breakdown as the key battleground for possession. "I think it revolves around the lineout because it’s very, very difficult at the breakdown to get it back, the scrum feed goes with your feed, kick-offs go with the kick-offs, where are you going to get the ball back?" said Loane. "You can only really get it back from the lineout. It’s fraught with difficulties at the breakdown, and you can get penalties or not, it’s a raffle. I would like to load up the lineout, I think we’re capable of doing that. We need to take three or four jumpers into a final." Loane believes Australia have sufficient tall timber to pursue that policy, especially with the international reemergence of 197cm tall No 8 Radike Samo. He feels the much scrutinised Wallabies scrum will

hold its own and that the backs contain the linebreaking talent to uphold Australia’s reputation in that area. "I think we have those backs. Australian backs are always the most creative backs in the world, they do love running rugby," said Loane. "It appears to me that the way defensive patterns are now, that they are very very solid. "But they are straight line defence like rugby league and if you actually break through like Will Genia did to set up that last try of ours (in last week's Test against New Zealand), there’s a lot of space there." Loane is not a fan of the modern day law that allows up to seven replacements in a game. "The fact that you have 22 players rather than 15. I would really like to see it, (and I know I am) a voice in the wilderness, revert to a 15-a-side game where you actually fatigue people," he said.

NEW YORK: TENNIS/ US OPEN

Scare for Nadal

Queasy Penetta moves into quarters ITALIAN Flavia Pennetta followed up her win over Maria Sharapova with a hard-fought victory over 13th seed Shuai Peng to reach the US Open quarterfinals this morning. Pennetta survived a major wobble at the end of the second set to win 6-4, 7-6, (8-6). Serving for the match at 6-5, Pennetta appeared to vomit at the back of the court before being broken. Pennetta, 29, then fought back from 5-0 and 6-2 down in the tie-break to set up a meeting with Angelique Kerber of Germany. Kerber defeated Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-4, 6-3, but the real drama was in the Louis Armstrong Stadium, where Pennetta had to dig deep to reach the last eight. Clearly feeling unwell on a humid day in New York, she bent over at the back of the court before recovering her poise.

"I was feeling really bad," said Pennetta. "I think it was because it's really humid. And also, when you are there you have a lot of emotion. "My body just needed to breathe, and I started to have the sensation of throwing up. With nothing inside, nothing came out." After receiving a time warning from the umpire, Pennetta failed to convert a match point with a wayward backhand. Peng looked certain to force a decider when she earned four set points but could not keep her game together, mishitting a forehand attempted winner. Pennetta recovered, winning five points in a row, and sealed victory when Peng missed an easy volley. The Italian fell in the quarterfinals in 2008 and 2009 but will fancy her chances of reaching the last four when she takes on the unseeded Kerber.

The 21stseeded American didn't have his serve broken and faced only three break points. He had just 16 unforced errors to Benneteau’s 36. However, the match was not as plain sailing as the American would have wished for, although it did seem that way in the beginning. Roddick appeared to be cruising in his third round match with Benneteau, leading two sets to love and seemingly on course for another last 16 berth. However, his French opponent battled on and had the third set in his sights when leading 6-5 and winning the first point on Roddick's serve. Roddick desperately needed to win the next point, and he did not falter. The pair dished up a classic, trading from the back to both flanks and cracking the ball at lightning pace. As the rally went on, and on, the crowd watched with bated breath, with

Spaniard collapses with cramp at post-match conference DEFENDING champion Rafael Nadal collapsed with cramp during a news conference after his third round win over Argentina's David Nalbandian this morning. The Spaniard, 25, had won the match 7-6 (5), 6-1, 7-5 in hot conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He was talking to the Spanish media after the match when he slumped back in his chair and slid to the floor. Medical staff were summoned and after 15 minutes of treatment, he resumed the news conference. "It was just cramping in the right leg, in the front and in the back. It was very painful, that's all," said Nadal. "I will train normally on

Monday. It was just a normal cramp that could have happened anywhere, but it happened in the Press room. Anywhere else, nobody would have noticed." Nadal will play Luxembourg's Gilles Muller in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows tomorrow. The world No 2 and his Argentine opponent produced some scintillating tennis, mostly in the third set, but too many errors from Nalbandian were his undoing. Nadal began strongly, holding both of his first two service games to love, while Nalbandian opened his serving with a double fault. The 2003 semifinalist soon grew into the match, however, and in the

fifth game broke Nadal's serve courtesy of a pair of excellent two-handed winners. Nadal looked frustrated at potentially letting a set slip for the first time in the tournament, but he responded when Nalbandian tried to serve the set out by hitting a sensational forehand winner down the line en route to breaking back. It went to a tie break, in which Nalbandian's third double fault of the set gave Nadal the initiative and he took it. Nadal kept the momentum by breaking Nalbandian in the opening game of the second, via another double fault from the Argentine. The second set was a far more straightforward affair,

with yet another double fault in the opening game from Nalbandian setting the tone, and Nadal cruised to a twoset lead. Nalbandian came back with intent at the start of the third by breaking Nadal in the opening game, only for the No 2 seed to break right back immediately. The pair exchanged breaks once more as they approached the business end of the set, which looked headed for another tie-break. However, two lethal forehand winners from Nadal on Nalbandian's serve gave him three match points, and Nalbandian yet again double faulted to hand his opponent the win.

approaching match. I know what they have got. So I'm going to try and match that, you know, and do better. But if they play well, all credit to them." The Serbian realises she will have to play better than she has all year if she is to upend Williams. "I think with all the work

I've done, you do gain confidence," said the 23-yearo l d Iv a n ov i c , w h o h a s reunited with her trainer, Scott Byrnes. "Obviously when you win, you have more confidence, you enjoy competing much more. That's something that I gain back. It makes a big difference because you don't doubt so much when you step on the court and you can play a lot freer." While much of the crowd rooted for home-country girl Stephens, Ivanovic's enthusiasm was infectious. After breaking Stephens to 4-3 in the second set by short-hopping a pretty forehand down the line, she jumped up, twirled twice, fist pumped, nearly started dancing and then broke into her huge smile. Playing on the big stage in Ashe Stadium and showing off her best stuff felt very nice.

Ana won't give up without a fight

Benneteau eventually flailing a backhand drive wide of the tramlines after a 43-shot trade off. Roddick lost in the second round at Flushing Meadows last year and in the third round in 2009. Benneteau, who got in on a wild card, had to retire in the second round of the 2010 Open with a left wrist injury and missed the rest of the season. The Frenchman upset 10th-seeded Nicolas Almagro in the first round this year. Roddick next faces fifthseeded David Ferrer.

ANA IVANOVIC has won the French Open, reached the final of the Australian Open and the semis of Wimbledon but has never reached the quarters of the US Open. The engaging Serbian has a shot to do so this year, but her foe in the fourth round today will be Serena Williams, who has come into the tournament as the favourite and now looks like an even heavier one after she knocked out No 4 Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Ivanovic, who beat nervous US teen Sloane Stephens on Saturday 6-3, 6-3, behind a barrage of searing forehands, has not hit her top form yet but said she is feeling more comfortable on court under her coach of six weeks, Nigel Sears, and is not planning on laying down for Serena. "She can play well," Ivanovic told the tourna-

Fletcher: Focus on Lithuania match

SCOTLAND captain Darren Fletcher urged his side to put the recent refereeing controversy behind them and focus on finishing their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a flourish. Craig Levein's men were leading 2-1 late on against the Czech Republic in a crucial qualifier at Hampden on Saturday when Jan Rezek appeared to dive in box. However, referee Kevin Blom pointed to the spot, much to Scotland's dismay, allowing Michal Kadlec to level the scores. Bl om t he n a d d e d to

Wales can stun Three Lions, warns Ramsey WALES captain Aaron Ramsey warned England they are now playing with a hint of arrogance after their stylish 2-1 win over Montenegro last Friday. Ramsey will lead Garry Speed's outfit against England at Wembley tomorrow imbued by his first win as skipper in a competitive fixture. The 20-year-old has now fully recovered from his horrific injury and again playing with the elegance and panache that earmarked him for stardom during his time at Cardiff. "To beat Montenegro was a great victory for us," he told Daily Mail. "We needed that to make us believe we can actually produce these sorts of results. "We played really well for 60 minutes. We're not used to being 2-0 up, so it was a new experience in the last half hour, but we did well to hold on. "I felt it was a more confident and arrogant display. In the last couple of games, we haven't started off very well. But we did this time and it was nice to see the lads start with a high tempo. "We settled quickly and everyone was confident." Wales' task will be made more difficult, however, as their talisman Craig Bellamy is suspended, as is the industrious David Vaughan. "It is disappointing for Craig and David to miss the game at Wembley," said Ramsey. "I thought the booking for Bellers (Craig) was very harsh. The guy has gone down easily and has kidded the referee. But we have the team and players to fill in."

Scotland's frustration when he failed to award a penalty at the other end when Christophe Berra appeared to be tripped in the area. The draw means the Scots remain five points behind second-placed Czech Republic in Group I and face an uphill struggle to qualify. Fletcher is angry and frustrated with the display by referee Blom, especially as the Dutchman refused to explain his decisions to him, even in his role as captain. "It was bitterly disappointing because we feel it wasn't

a penalty and the ref gives it," he said. "Then we go up the other end a couple of minutes later and we have a stonewall penalty not given. I can't really understand it. "You work all week, train hard, work on tactics, put the effort in as the lads put into the game and for it to be decided by a referee, football matches shouldn't be that way. "I tried to speak to him the whole day and it was just a blank look and a 'go away', which is disappointing because usually as captain

you get to speak to referees. "They are a little bit more lenient towards captains and you can ask them questions, but he just wasn't interested the whole game." Despite the dismay at the decision Fletcher urged his team mates to put it behind them and focus on beating Lithuania tomorrow. "We can't think it's bad luck or anything like that, we just have to pick ourselves up for this match," he said. "You can't go into the game too angry. We just have to refocus ourselves, pick ourselves up from the

disappointment, get the fans behind us like they always are at Hampden, and pick up the three points. "The Czechs have got two difficult games but if we don't do our job then what they do is irrelevant. "We don't want it to be us not doing our jobs and then find out they have dropped points which meant we could have qualified. "We have to finish with a bang and not a whimper. We can't give up, we have to keep battling while there is still hope," said the Manchester United man.

England still need veteran midfielder, says Walcott ARSENAL winger Theo Walcott believes England teammate and midfielder Frank Lampard still has a role to play for the Three Lions. L a mp a r d ' s l o n g - t e r m future with England has come into question after he started on the bench for England's 3-0 win over Bulgaria last Friday in a Group G match of the Euro 2012 qualifiers in Sofia. It was the first time in four years Lampard was dropped from a competitive fixture that he has been available to play. C o a ch Fabi o C ap el l o warned L ampard and England's senior players that they are not guaranteed a place in his side, sparking speculation that the Chelsea man may no longer feature in the Italian tactician's plans. However, Walcott, who started against Bulgaria, believes Lampard still has a lot to offer and that compe-

tition for places is good for the squad. "Frank is an experienced, great player. Ever yone's spot is up for grabs," said Walcott. "There's so much competition, with everyone playing every week for Premier League teams. You need to be on your toes and if you're playing well the manager will pick you. "Frank's got plenty to offer still. "Being professional, the players just get on with their jobs. There's no sulking if you're on the bench — you just want to go out and prove the manager wrong." Walcott, at the same time, insists he is unfazed about his three-year international goal drought for England. The 22-year-old has not scored for England since a stunning hattrick in a World Cup qualifier in Croatia on Sept 10, 2008. "I'm scoring goals for my club. Hopefully I can take

that to international level. It will come. A lot of players don't score for their countries," said Walcott. "Being only 22, people think I've been around for a long time. I'm not putting too much pressure on myself because, apart from the goals, everything else is going well."

Van Persie enjoys free role with Holland

ROBIN VAN PERSIE hinted he would like a free role for Arsenal, after his four-goal salvo in Hollands' 11-0 thrashing of San Marino in a Euro 2012 match last Friday. The 28-year-old is usually used as the main striker for the Gunners, but Holland coach Bert van Marwijk asked

him to do something different in the qualifiers. He played behind lone frontman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and responded by finding the target four times in the rout. Van Persie revealed he had enjoyed playing in a new position.

He told OnsOranje: 'This game (against San Marino) I had a free role. That was fun," he said. "But at Arsenal I play as the striker, that's what I do every day." However, van Persie also admitted he did not know whether van Marwijk would continue with the experiment

for tomorrow's game against Finland. "It's the coach's decision. We must judge it match by match," he said. Another Arsenal man to enjoy international duty was new boy Park ChuYoung, who scored a hattrick for South Korea in a 6-0 victory over Lebanon in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.

LONDON: football/ premier league

I am no Judas for moving to Chelsea, says Meireles RAUL MEIRELES insists he is no "Judas" after trading Liverpool for Chelsea. A shock written transfer request submitted in the final hour before last Wednesday's deadline paved the way for the Portugal midfielder to make the switch to the Blues. It also brought criticism from sections of the Liverpool support, but 28-year-old Meireles defended his conduct and stressed it was not motivated by money. "These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool. It was a fantastic year," Meireles told Radio e Televisao de Portugal. "People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that. I will explain it later. Things are still fresh." Meireles had fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool after manager Kenny Dalglish's recruitment drive saw Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson added to an already-congested central midfield area. Despite the exit on loan of Alberto Aquilani and Joe Cole, Meireles had no hesitation in linking up again with Andre Villas-Boas, who he previously played for at Porto. "I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there," said Meireles. "The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles." Meanwhile, another of Chelsea's new signing, Romelu Lukaku, was omitted from their 22-man Champions League squad. With only 17 non-homegrown players allowed by Uefa, the 18-year-old striker, will not be able to feature in the group stages. Given only four of the eight homegrown players can be "association trained", England U-21 leftback Ryan Bertrand is another not included. However, promising young midfielder Josh McEachran will be available as the 18-year-old is set to be part of Chelsea's 'B' list. Chelsea's other summer signings Oriol Romeu, Juan Mata and Meireles are all in the 22-man squad. Regulations for the domestic Premier League are different, and would see Lukaku counted as one of Chelsea's U-21 players, so not part of the 25-man quota.

Torturing Giovani Dos Santos unhappy with Redknapp's treatment

FEELING MISTREATED: Dos Santos has made clear his disappointment at being unable to secure a move to Sevilla over the summer — AFP photo

TO T T E N HA M att a c ke r Giovani Dos Santos was left "disappointed, sad and angry" by manager Harry Redknapp's decision to pull the plug on his move to Sevilla. Dos Santos has struggled to establish himself at Spurs since joining from Barcelona in 2008 and has made just 10 appearances in the Premier League. It is almost a year since the Mexico international last featured for Spurs and he had hoped to secure a move to Sevilla this summer. "To be honest I already felt at another club, Sevilla, and we had already completed more than 50 per cent of negotiations," Dos Santos told Sport. "Almost everything had been agreed but with half an hour to go Spurs changed their minds, something I found very odd. "I was ver y surprised Redknapp changed his mind, given that in the three years I've been with Spurs, he has not used me or had confidence in me. I hope this time he is honest and tells the truth when I talk to him about where he would like me to play. "Both myself and my agent have been left disappointed, sad and angry at the way Spurs have acted and after such a long time without having any confidence in me I am now going to get my chance, which seems strange. "Even so, I mean to take

this opportunity out of respect to the Spurs' fans and also because of the professional I am." Dos Santos, 22, has been included in Redknapp's 25-man squad submitted to the Premier League for the first-half of the season. Meanwhile, playmaker Rafael van der Vaart hopes he will be back in "one to two weeks" despite Spurs' prognosis that he will miss six. Van der Vaart suffered a hamstring during the latter stages of Spurs' 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City recently. He has since been diagnosed with a hamstring tear after an MRI scan and Spurs confirmed they expect him to be sidelined for around six weeks. He missed Holland's 11-0 thrashing of San Marino last Friday in a Euro 2012 qualifying match and will also sit out tomorrow's away clash against Finland. "It feels okay now," van der Vaart told De Telegraaf. "I hope in one to two weeks to make my comeback. "The past has proven that I can quickly recover from such an injury." Spurs' next Premier League game is against Wolves on Saturday, with Redknapp's men then facing PAOK Salonika in the Europa League before welcoming Liverpool to White Hart Lane on Sept 18.

Bent, Richards out of England squad DARREN BENT and Micah Richards have both returned to their clubs after being ruled out of England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales tomorrow due to injury. Bent had not been able to train in the build-up to last Friday's win over Bulgaria after picking up a groin problem. And with director of football development Trevor Brooking confirming that Bent did not train yesterday either, coach Fabio Capello decided there was little point keeping the Aston Villa man. It is thought that Manchester City defender Richards has suffered a hamstring injury.

Modric saga still haunts Spurs

BARCELONA: football/ primera liga

Barca claim they got Fabregas on the cheap

BARCELONA vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu believes the club's €29m (RM121m) acquisition of Cesc Fabregas was "a very good deal" for the Catalans because the Spain midfielder is worth double that amount. Fabregas, 24, completed his protracted return to his boyhood team last month — eight years after leaving to sign for Arsenal as a teenager in 2003 — and has made an impressive start to life back in Catalonia. He scored a stunning goal in the European Super Cup against Porto and also scored against Villarreal on his Primera Liga debut, prompting Bartomeu to observe

FABREGAS

that the World Cup winner's real valuation is closer to the €60m the Gunners initially demanded than the €29m — which could rise to €40m — they eventually got. "The transfer of Cesc was a very good deal for us,"

Bartomeu told Sport. "The price on the open market wouldn't have been €29m, but he lowered his value by saying that he really wanted to go to Barcelona. "His real price was what Arsenal initially asked — at least €60m. "The fact that we announced in advance that we would only spend €45m this summer worked to our advantage. Clubs were already aware of our position." Bartomeu also remained hopeful that manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola, who has guided Barca to three straight Primera Liga titles and two Champions League crowns since taking over in the sum-

mer of 2008, will commit to the club beyond this season. "He's very smart and he will say when he's ready to talk," said the vice-president. "We will give all the tools so that when we talk it will be very difficult to say no." Meanwhile, reports claimed Barca had reached a pre-contract agreement with Santos for Brazil teenager Neymar to sign in two years' time — something the Brazilian club deny — and Bartomeu was coy on the topic. "He's a great player and young. There are European clubs who want him. It is Barca's obligation to follow young talent who will be good."

TOTTENHAM fear they will not be able to hold onto Luka Modric (pic) for much longer, despite warding off interest from rival clubs during the summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea set to return with new transfer bids in January. Reports suggest that officials at Spurs believe the Blues, who bid £40m for Modric on deadline day, and fellow admirers United, will return to battle it out for the Croatian playmaker's signature. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy knocked back several bids for Modric from Chelsea, but given the player's well-publicised comments calling for a move to Stamford Bridge, Andre Villas-Boas is not expected to give up his pursuit of the 25-year-old. Alex Ferguson is also keen on the player and, having missed out on Wesley Sneijder in the summer, could attempt to outbid Chelsea when clubs are allowed to trade again after the turn of the year.

Improving Cahill delighted with Terry combination in defence

BOLTON’S Gary Cahill believes his partnership with John Terry in the heart of defence worked well during England’s 3-0 win over Bulgaria in a Euro 2012 qualifying match in Sofia last Friday. Cahill, who scored his first international goal in the match, was preferred to Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott to partner captain Terry. And ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Wales at Wembley, Cahill says Terry can help improve him as a player. “I thought it worked really well, and as a whole team we defended really well. Playing with somebody as talented as Terry will no doubt bring my game along and I’ll learn a lot from him,” said Cahill. He also hailed the contribution of rightback Chris Smalling, who made his debut against the Bulgarians, and midfielders Scott Parker and Gareth Barry, who were given the nod to start ahead of Frank Lampard. “It’s nice as a centreback to have the two holding midfielders, even just to bounce the ball off and get it back. It gives you that protection there which was fantastic,” said Cahill. “I thought Smalling did fantastically well. It was different to Manchester United games. A lot of the time when Bulgaria broke down they left three up front which didn’t allow him to get forward as much as he would have liked to, but I thought he

defended really well. “He was confident as ever and he looked really good, and he talks a lot alongside you which obviously helps.” On whether there is a new generation starting to emerge in the England team, Cahill said: “I think so. I’ve been around the squad a little while, and I had to bide my time for my opportunities. “Seeing the squad now with the young players coming in, there is a good blend with the experienced professionals that are still here. So it bodes well for England, and there is some great competition at the moment. “The squad are young and the young boys are in really good form for their clubs. Long may that continue, and I think if it does then you will see a younger England squad.” What about the match against Wales? “With us being at home, we would like to think we will have a lot of possession, but it is going to be a difficult game. We will try to get a good result on Tuesday off the back of the game last Friday,” said Cahill. With Wales defeating Montenegro 2-1 last Friday, England need four points from their final two Group G matches to qualify for Euro 2012. “The table is looking healthy at the moment, and Wales did us a favour. We have got two big games coming up, but we will approach them in a similar manner,” said Cahill.

Kolo wants early action after drug ban

MANCHESTER CITY defender Kolo Toure hopes to return to action against Wigan at home on Saturday with a determination to prove what he already knows, that he can perform without diet pills. The former Arsenal man has returned to training and is available for selection again after serving a six-month ban. Toure was suspended from all football activity after admitting he had inadvertently taken bendroflumethiazide in some water tablets, packaged

as dieting pills, that he obtained through his wife. He knows there will be some observers who question whether his displays for City were affected by the use of the tablets. That is despite the independent commission, which assessed his case, being satisfied the 30-year-old Ivory Coast international did not intend to enhance his sporting performance or mask the use of a performance-enhancing substance.

“I feel 24-, 25-years-old. I want to show all the people that think Kolo Toure needed tablets, water tablets, to be a better footballer,” he told City TV. “I just want to show them and that’s what I will do. I will give 100 per cent in every single game to show those people I don’t need water tablets to be a strong man. “I’ve been in this league for almost 10 years now, being unbeatable with Arsenal, doing a lot of good games. I just want

to show them.” Toure said he had only taken one week away from training during his suspension. He was not allowed to join in with sessions at City until last month, due to his ban, but trained alone and with fitness experts in England, Ivory Coast and in New York. Now he is eager to make up for lost time by playing a key role for City. “Sometimes when you come every day to training you can’t realise how big it is to be a

footballer,” said Toure. “I just realised how much we are lucky to be footballers and be able to play for a football team like City. To be able to come back and train with the team, come into the training ground, it’s great.”
