A total of 140 officers from Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Immigration Department, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) probably “ruined” their breakfast but the authorities were merely doing their job.

At 11am yesterday, seven stalls were torn down by City Hall for operating illegally and for setting up illegal structures without permission.

TRADERS, taxi drivers and business operators heaved a sigh of relief at the unexpected decision of the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) organisers to continue its rally for electoral reform in a stadium instead of the streets.

Taxi driver Wong Chi Keen, 45, from Bukit Bintang, said he was in favour for the rally to be held in a stadium.

Vimalan Balan, 30, an assistant catering manager said the rally planned in a stadium would not disrupt day to day activities.

"Holding the rally in a

stadium is a much better option and freedom of speech will not be suppressed."

However, Zuraidah Mohd Yusof, 48, a housewife from Danau Kota, said any sort of rally was not appropriate.

"They should call it off. Don't do it in the streets or in the stadium.

Our country is a peaceful country. It has always been that way sine Independence."

Cops: Bersih link to weapons find

"BERSIH will never resort to terror tactics," said Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) steering committee member Dr Wong Chin Huat when commenting on police allegations that a discovery of weapons caches in KL and Selangor yesterday was linked to the coalition's rally in the city on Saturday.

"We have said from the beginning that our gathering will be a peaceful one, no matter where it is held."

TO overcome the collection problem faced by Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK), the government plans to integrate sewerage charges with the water bills, says Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui (pic).

"Those who refuse to pay their IWK bills are mainly from low-cost housing areas," Chin told The Malay Mail.

"Perhaps they cannot comprehend the sewerage billings because they cannot see the work done by IWK even though they flush their toilets. To overcome this, we are working on various payment mechanisms, including merging the sewerage charges with water bills.

"However, this will take time as IWK sewerage systems and treatment plants need to be streamlined into regional locations instead of the current practice of having oxidation or stabilisation ponds in housing estates."

Chin said Klang Valley residents will be the first to have an integrated billing system under the Greater Kuala Lumpur Plan and River of Life project.

SEWERAGE bill defaulters still owe a staggering RM717 million to Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) from January 1997 to May this year.

"Last year alone, arrears stood at RM208 million but we achieved a 51 per cent collection rate," said IWK chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Din (pic).

"However, RM717 million is still owed to us from January 1997 to May this year. Most defaulters reside in low-cost flats, apartments and condominiums, along with food operators, retailers and office premises. Some don't pay up because of tenant and landlord disagreements over who should pay and of course, there are also defaulters who

have abandoned their houses or other premises."

He said whenever IWK covered new areas, arrears increased.

"New house owners wait months before paying their sewerage bills and we often have to send them reminders," Abdul Kadir told The Malay Mail.

"On an annual average, we take over 200 new sewerage treatment plants."

Despite the mounting arrears, he said collection rate has improved.

"In the first five months of this year, we achieved an 82 per cent collection rate.

"Last year, our collection rate for KL was 60 per cent and for Selangor, 45 per cent. So far this year, our collection rate

has gone up to 89 per cent for KL and 79 per cent for Selangor."

He said affordability should no longer be an issue as the standard rate is RM8 per month (or 27 sen a day) and for villages only RM3 a month (10 sen a day). For low-cost housing, it stands at RM2 (seven sen a day).

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we lowered sewerage charges for low-cost premises and villages, provided complimentary sewerage services to places of worship and repaired malfunctioning private sewerage facilities at a total cost of about RM54 million a year.

"We are adopting a win-win approach for users with sub-

stantial arrears by letting them pay in instalments," said Abdul Kadir, adding defaulters can call IWK at 1-800-88-3495 or email care@iwk.com.my for assistance.

"We only resort to legal action after all our reminders and efforts by our debt collectors have failed."

Defaulters: My neighbours don't pay

WHEN it comes to paying Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) bills, some do not feel the urgency to do so, and The Malay Mail set off to find out why.

Reasons for their indifference varied from "my neighbours don't pay" to never having received the bills at all.

Lim Chee Wai, who lives in an apartment in Bandar Putra Permai in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, claimed he has never paid a single IWK bill before.

"I have seen IWK tankers coming

here to clear the septic tanks but I don't pay because I have never received a bill from them," he said.

"Perhaps someone else is paying a collective bill but nobody has asked me to pay."

Lim's neighbour in the same apartment building, who preferred to be known only as Tan, said he stopped paying IWK bills three years ago.

"I found out my neighbour never paid his IWK bills and never got into any trouble," he said.

Jonathan, an owner-occupier of a

double-storey house in Taman Sri Gombak said he stopped paying IWK bills as well.

"A few times when IWK bill collectors came knocking, I told them I am just the tenant and they never bothered me after that."

Alice, a Petaling Jaya resident, said they should not have to pay IWK at all.

"We are paying taxes and assessment rates, along with water and electricity bills. Isn't that enough?"

Agent refutes claim of prompting maid to kill her employer

THE agent of a teenage Indonesian maid who assaulted her employer on June 28 has refuted the maid's allegation that the agent had instigated the maid to “kill” her employer.

"I am shocked the maid attacked her employer and refute what the maid alleged, as I never asked her to harm her employer," said the agent, who preferred to be known as Marrisa.

"The maid was a new recruit and it was also her first time in Malaysia. In the month the maid was working with the employer, they

appeared to get along well."

Marrisa said the last time she met the maid and the employer was when both visited her agency to collect some of the maid's belongings.

"Their visit was about a week before the attack and I asked the employer and the maid whether they were happy with each other and both said that everything was fine.

"Police have recorded my statement and I am helping them locate the person who recommended the maid to

US pistol export deal to Malaysia put on ice

A TENTATIVE deal to procure some 3,000 semi-automatic pistols for the police from a United States manufacturer is on tenterhooks as the company had failed to obtain an export permit from its government, say people familiar with the matter.

T h e Ma l ay Ma i l w a s infor me d t hat Smit h & Wesson, the famous US-based firearms manufacturer, had clinched the tentative deal with the Home Ministry for the procurement of 3,000 units of its M&P9 9mm semi-automatic pistol in early 2010.

However, the ministry had imposed a pre-condition that a legal contract will only be signed once Smith & Wesson obtained an export permit from the US State Department.

The Wall Street Journal last Thursday reported on its website that Smith & Wesson had reported in an annual earnings regulatory filing that it was still under investigation by the US Justice Department (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for potential violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bans bribery of foreign officials to get business. Smith & Wesson first disclosed the investigation in its 2010 10-K filing.

"The investigation... caused us to make substantial changes in our foreign sales personnel and foreign representatives,

modify our processes and cease sales in certain foreign countries," the company said last Thursday. "These actions have had and can be expected to continue to have an adverse effect on the level of our foreign sales."

The deal with the Home Ministr y, if it had gone through, would be worth around RM7.8 million.

Smith & Wesson, which took part in the Defence Services Asia 2010 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in April last year, is represented in Malaysia by a local business-

According to sources, the tentative deal involving the M&P9 was clinched via direct negotiations like the 2006 deal by the Home Ministry which had police adopting the Walther P99 and US-made Carbon 15 and 308 Bushmaster rifles.

According to the DOJ, the charges were in conjunction with a massive two-year sting operation set by the FBI.

The victim's husband said: "Marrisa visited my wife during her hospitalisation to explain she never asked the maid to attack my wife."

SPAD: Public transport’s 2020 goal achievable

THE government's plan to get at least 40 per cent of Kuala Lumpur's population using public transport by 2020 is an achievable target.

This is the opinion of L and Public Transp or t Commission (SPAD) chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad, who felt the target is plausible if all upgrading initiatives undertaken to improve the country's public transport system are completed by then.

"The current 35km Light Rail Transit (LRT) AmpangKelana Jaya extension lines and the Mass Rail Transit (MRT) projects in the Klang Valley mu s t b e c om pleted first before more people can use public transport."

Currently, 17 per cent of KL’s population are using public transport, according to a study by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu).

"There are nine years left to achieve the target.

By then, the population would have increased and as part of urbanisation, more people would move into the city. Car prices would also have risen and more people would rely on public transport. These factors would contribute towards reaching the target."

However, Association for the Improvement of Mass Transit (Transit) chairman, Muhammad Zulkarnain Hamzah, felt the government's target would be impossible to achieve considering the current progress of the public transport system.

"In the Sixth Malaysia Plan, the government had wanted to increase public transport usage to 50 per cent but we haven't even achieved half the proportion.

"The government is also targeting to up the current 17 per cent usage to 25 per cent by 2012.

That's a huge leap, so let's not look that far first. Let's wait and see if next year's target will be achieved before anything else.”

He said there should be a proper transportation support system for the LRT and MRT lines before such targets are set.

"When they talk about public transport, they are only concentrating on LRT and MRT. What about buses that are the support system needed for these trains? We can have the most efficient LRT and MRT but without a proper support system, they would be pointless."

Muhammad Zulkarnain said local authorities should also be proactive in shaping good public transport instead of leaving everything to the Federal government.

SYAHIDAH: Hopes to go to the US for surgery

LECTURING at a private college gives Syahidah Ishak much pleasure but things changed when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour a year ago.

"I love to share my knowledge with students but I can no longer carry on teaching," said the Klang-born Syahidah, 33, who requires funds to undergo surgery abroad.

"I first had hearing problems two years ago but did not think much about it until I lost the ability to hear from my right ear."

She thought her right ear was clogged and tried to clean it up but that did not help.

"I then borrowed a friend's earphone to listen to music and that's when I realised I had become deaf in my right ear," she said.

Syahidah, who stays in Ampang, had a medical check-up last July only to learn the awful truth.

I did not want to reveal that to anybody. When my parents found out, I apologised for not wanting them to worry," she said, adding that her parents were pensioners.

"If I have sufficient funds, I want to undergo surgery in the US by September," she said, adding that she has resorted to selling T-shirts, umbrellas and lamps adorned with the apple motif.

"Since last July, I have been worried sick and unable to sleep properly. I have problems closing my right eye and have to cover the eye with a patch."

"Having studied in Canada and learning first-hand about how the petroleum industry works, I believe I would be able to make a contribution to both Petronas and Malaysia," said the 23-year-old honours graduate from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada where he specialised in geophysics and minored in economics.

"Petronas is hoping to broaden their business market in North America, specifically off the coast of British Columbia in Canada where they are partnering with Canada's Progress Energy Resources Corp to explore shale gas assets. And over in Sudan, Petronas is developing oil and gas reserves."

When The Malay Mail first

interviewed Mubeen in March last year, he was in his third year as a Bachelor of Science undergrad and a lot has happened since then.

"During my final semester, I had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant at the same university and was also selected as a representative of the university to present my undergraduate research at numerous conventions in Canada".

And in May, he attended field work organised by the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG) in Calgary, Alberta for the second time.

AFTER ten years, City Hall has finally come down hard on illegal stall operators in Taman Bunga Raya, Setapak.

Seven stalls were demolished by 140 officers from City Ha l l, Immig rat ion Department, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela).

The stalls, located at Jalan Malinja 2, operate until 4am causing daily congestions in the area.

A spokesman of Taman Bunga Raya's Rukun Tetangga,

who declined to be named, said they were happy City Hall demolished the stalls.

"We have nothing against them doing their business but residents are unhappy because their stalls operate even after midnight.

"Often times there are about 200 vehicles parked in the area raising security concerns."

However, one of the demolished stall owner claimed he was not given any notice by City Hall.

"I will apply for a new licence to open back my stall," said the trader who sold western food for more than five years.

City Hall Petty Traders and Hawker Management Department officer Izzul Fikri Mohd said the stalls were demolished as most traders were operating without licenses.

Rapper and partner to face 'khalwat' charge in December

THE 31-year-old rapper from a well-known 90s hip-hop group who was caught for khalwat (close proximity) last Sunday morning, will be charged together with his divorcee partner of the same age, in court on Dec 13.

A Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) spokesman said the rapper would be charged under Section 29 (1)(a) of the Selangor Syariah Criminal Enactment 1995 while the

woman under Section 29 (1) (b) of the same enactment.

Following The Malay Mail report yesterday, more details of the raid were made known in a police report lodged by Cheras Batu 10 mosque imam Raslan Samsudin, 62, who had led the raiding party comprising three Langat Jaya Condominium residents' association members, a mosque committee member, the police and JAIS officers.

According to Raslan’s police report, the group began knocking on the unit door at 5am before they finally broke it down at 6.30am and discovered the couple in compromising circumstances, apart from the fact they are not married to each other.

Yesterday, The Malay Mail reported about the brazenness of the rapper and his alleged relationship with the mother-oftwo, who were reported by the

condominium's residents.

After he was caught, the rapper allegedly returned to the condominium and challenged residents to lodge another report about him and his partner, as the couple continued to live in the same unit, purportedly owned by the woman's exhusband.

Residents said they planned to stage another raid in response to the couple's defiance.

Honing skills to produce world-class human capital

THE 20th SkillsMalaysia and 5th MySkills competitions held from July 3-6 and from today till Saturday respectively, are aimed at recognising and selecting skilled Malaysian youths in a long-term attempt to produce world-class human capital, says Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who officiated the opening ceremony for both at the Centre for Instructors and Advanced Skill Training (CIAST) Auditorium in Shah Alam yesterday.

The competitions are meant to improve participants' technical and vocational training (TEVT) so that highly skilled workers will increase from the current 28 per cent to 33 per cent by 2015, and to 50 per cent by 2020.

"This will be the foundation for achieving a high-income economy in accordance with the government's 10th Malaysia Plan, and such emphasis will help produce employees who are dynamic, responsive, competitive and successful," said the minister.

"We also hope to change people's perceptions towards skilled work and to encourage improvements in participants' potential and career prospects to the point it may eventually earn international recognition."

Winners will have the opportunity to represent the country in the Asean Skills Competition

2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and if they succeed there, will then be considered for participation at the World Skills Competition (WSC) 2013 in Leipzig, Germany.

A total of 183 participants qualified this year for SkillsMalaysia and 96 for Myskills, which are being held simultaneously at four venues — the Malaysian Construction Academy's (ABM) Central Branch in Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at Serdang,

Selangor, Wood Industry Skills Development Centre (WISDEC) Olak Lempit at Banting, Selangor and MARA College (KKTM) at Balik Pulau, Penang.

Twenty-six skill areas are featured in SkillsMalaysia, and 15 in MySkills which include electronics, web design, beauty therapy, cooking, IT network systems administration, bricklaying, wall and floor tiling,

Boom gate 'politics' Exco member's office denies meddling in city council work

AN UPROAR has emerged over the case of a boom gate in Mutiara Damansara falling onto a car — and the alleged interference of a politician in council work.

Questions have been raised as to why the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) did not remove the boom gate despite the matter being brought to its attention by complainant JAMES WONG and Hotline in our June 16 report.

In the latest development, a source from the council explains that it has issued notices to all residents associations to dismantle boom gates which are illegal or risk having them removed by the council.

"It's not that we do not want to take any action against illegal boom gates but there is too much red tape," says the source, who has declined further comment.

Meanwhile, Hotline has learned the council's enforcement unit had tried several times to demolish illegal boom gates under its jurisdiction but had allegedly been stopped by officers from a politician's office.

A puzzling event SHE had been looking forward to taking part in a puzzle competition with her son at the GLC Open Day at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre but it turned out to be a sorry experience instead.

LOW CHOOI HONG says the event website had listed the competition to be on June 24, the first day of the event, and registration was to start at 10.30am.

Eager to win the attractive prizes offered, mother and son arrived from Gombak at 8.30am.

"At 10am, when we were permitted to enter, we learned the competition had been cancelled," LOW tells Hotline.

Disappointed, the 48-year-old says she tried asking around as no announcement was made to inform the public about the change.

"Everyone I asked said they

didn't know and they were trying to contact people to find out."

Finally, a woman who claimed to be the event manager told LOW the cancellation was a final decision.

"I asked for her name card and she reluctantly gave it. Her position wasn't stated in the card, so I questioned her. She wasn't pleased. She shouted for security on her walkie-talkie to get me out of the place," alleges LOW. "I was merely asking her questions and she had to embarrass my son and I by shouting for security?"

LOW says she is unhappy the organiser had cancelled the event with no prior notice. Even the crew were clueless on the changes.

"We wasted two hours for nothing and only left about 12.30pm

"I don't think whoever that's stopping the council's work are from my office. I have no knowledge of such an incident," the Bukit Lanjan assemblyman tells .

She says "one cannot simply say if the boom gates are legal or not" as talks on the guidelines are ongoing.

"To comment further on the issue, one must know the current situation of the talks. At present, MBPJ is one of the hardest (councils) to get approval for boom gates. Despite the problems faced, we are still discussing the matter and trying to find the best guidelines."

On the issue of JAMES WONG, she says: "Our office is not aware of his troubles. We would like to invite him to come to our office to discuss the matter. We are willing to be the mediator in this case, given that JAMES has all his documents and reports ready for us to review."

"I tried to reload my card using the ticketvending machine on board a RapidKL bus on April 15. The payment was successful but the amount was not credited into my card," says MELISSA HEW of Kuala Lumpur.

She tells Hotline she has been calling Touch ‘n Go Careline ever since.

HEW claims she was told at first to wait 30 days and to call again if she did not receive the

After 30 days, she called customer service numerous times but did not get a response.

COMING SOON: RIMA College says Nicole will not only get her replacement certificate but it will also pay the cost of renewing it

NICOLE THONG has been a part-time secretarial student at RIMA College since December 2008.

She says she successfully completed her course and sat for her final exam in October last year.

"I obtained a result of Pass with Credit shown on the result slip but the college has lost my certificate," she tells Hotline.

NICOLE says that after meeting a RIMA College staff member at their headquarters in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, she was

promised the college will request for a new certificate from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

"This was two months back. Each time I called the staff member, he kept giving me unconvincing reasons such as the person responsible is on medical leave or not in the office, or his officer is not coming to the office or the officer 'never got back to me'," she says.

To make matters worse, she says, the certificate will

expire in September and she will only be able to use it for a few months despite paying her fees in full.

NICOLE wants the college to provide her with the certificate soon.

● RIMA College spokesman Dev Raj says: "We have sent in a requisition for a replacement of NICOLE's certificate to the LCCI branch office in Kuala Lumpur."

He says he has been informed by the branch that it will take four to six

weeks to obtain the certificate as it needs to be sent from their London headquarters.

Asked about payment to renew the certificate, seeing that NICOLE has not been able to use it for the past year, Raj says: "RIMA College will take up the responsibility in getting her certificate and will pay for its renewal."

When contacted, NICOLE says she is happy someone from the college is finally attending to her problem.

Wrong app-roach (July 4) CLEANLINESS is important, and for an establishment to open its doors for business, it should ensure that the food is completely clean. If it does conduct regular pest control, and somehow this roach just happened to fall into the pizza, then yes, it is an accident but can’t be disregarded.

Planning for city with soul

KL River of Life masterplan

THE River of Life project is bound to revitalise and transform the Klang and Gombak rivers along the 10.7km stretch within the city centre.

Significantly, Kuala Lumpur is the Malay name for a confluence where two muddy rivers meet.

A much earlier proposal to rehabilitate the rivers and exploit their economic value was mooted under the KL Linear City project, which did not take off.

Would it be a tall order now to transform these rivers into iconic waterfronts on par with waterways in cities like Amsterdam, London, Melbourne and Paris by 2020?

Perhaps a reality check is in order. What we have are two small rivers, no wider than a canal. On dry days, it would be difficult to row a small boat over some shallow parts.

Moreover, the river is treated as open sewage by those lacking in civic consciousness.

Mercifully, rain falls at regular intervals, washing away dust and debris and swelling the rivers after a downpour. Until the SMART tunnel project was completed, flooding was a common occurrence.

The colour of the Klang river has remained dark yellow, much like our famous teh tarik, from the time tin was discovered in Ampang in 1857 that led to the founding of Kuala Lumpur.

The International Masterplanning Competition that attracted 22 bids with five shortlisted for voting by the public will ensure the success of the river beautification and development.

However, the river cleaning component may prove to be as challenging as maintaining a first-world infrastructure in our third-world mentality.

It will have to start with the rivers upstream by educating the people and controlling the industries.

It would also be meaningless to showcase pristine water within the city but allow the river to remain at its present deplorable condition downstream. As such, the State government and local authorities should act in tandem to upgrade the entire length of the Klang River.

The river can come to life with fishes and activities such as river cruises, motorised barges and houseboats for tourists. The riverbanks should be paved for walking, jogging and cycling.

Marathon runners can run here instead of on city roads, disrupting traffic. With some imagination instead of money, any local authority can create a huge media buzz by making good use of rivers that run through their jurisdiction.

On stretches with little economic value, the riverbanks can be planted with Banyan trees. These unique trees have roots sprouting from their

branches and upon reaching the ground, would grow into solid trunks.

As such, the branches can be led to grow sideways, running parallel to the river. It is Bonsai in reverse. Planting the first tree and announcing to the world it will eventually be spread over a kilometre would generate great interest.

Rights groups cite case of woman's torture, virginity testing

THREE rights groups sued the head of Egypt's armed forces yesterday for trying a female in a military court and said she was tortured and forced to undergo a virginity test.

The woman, whose age was not specified, was one of 17 female protesters rounded up on March 9 when the army cleared demonstrators from Tahrir Square in Cairo, epicentre of the protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The rights groups said the female was tried before the military court without knowing what charges she was facing. All the female protesters were sentenced within four days of their detention, they said.

The girl "was exposed to the worst kinds of humiliation, torture and violation to the sanctity of her body to the extent of inspecting her virginity within view and earshot of army

prison workers", the groups said in a statement that did not give her name or age.

The case against the head of the armed forces and other unnamed individuals was filed with an administrative court by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, the Nadeem Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture and the Hisham Mubarak Law Centre.

Amnesty International gathered statements from some of the women who spoke of virginity tests, beatings, electric shocks and strip searches while being photographed by male soldiers.

Maid sues NY Post for 'hooker' report THE hotel maid who accused former IMF chief Dominique StraussKahn of sexual assault sued the New York Post and five of its journalists for libel yesterday for reporting that she was a prostitute.

The 32-year-old Guinean immigrant accused the Post of publishing defamatory articles between July 2-4 "in an apparent desperate attempt to bolster its rapidly plunging sales."

The Post said in a statement: "We stand by our reporting."

The suit filed in Bronx state court seeks damages to be determined at trial for articles it said the Post knew were false or should have known were false before they were published.

On Friday prosecutors called into question the woman's credibility for a series of lies about her background including a false story

about being gang-raped on her application for US asylum.

The case against Strauss-Kahn appeared to be unraveling, and he has vehemently denied the charges, but a seven-count indictment against him remained in effect.

Saudi Arabia tank sale raises ire of German opposition GERMAN opposition parties and some ruling coalition members were up in arms yesterday over reports that the government wants to overturn its export rules and sell hundreds of tanks to Saudi Arabia.

This followed press reports that Saudi Arabia is about to buy 200 Leopard-2s, Germany's main battle tank which is also produced under licence in Spain.

Germany, which has declined for over 20 years to sell such heav y weapons to Saudi Arabia because of conc e r n s ov e r human rights and fears for Israel's security, refused to conf irm the report.

But the Suddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) paper reported the deal is already done and both Israel and the US signed off before the final decision was made on June 27.

"Everyone will understand that the Israeli government is in agreement. Otherwise, there would have been an official protest," the paper quoted a government source as saying.

132-year-old mystery solved Broadcaster David Attenborough's garden gives up a 'ghost'

A MURDER mystery dating back to 1879 was finally resolved yesterday when a skull unearthed in BBC legend David Attenborough's (pic) garden was formally recognised as that of a woman murdered by her maid 132 years ago.

Julia Martha Thomas, a wealthy widow aged 55, was killed by her 29-year-old housekeeper Kate Webster very close to Park Road in well-to-do Richmond, but her head was never found.

The case became known as the 'Barnes Mystery', which gripped London at the time.

Webster, a convicted thief

and fraudster, chopped up Thomas with an axe, boiled the remains and gave the dripping to local children to eat.

A box containing human flesh was found in the nearby River Thames days after the killing and one of the victim's feet was found on an allotment.

Webster was tried and executed, but the head was never found until it was unearthed in October by workmen building an extension at the home of Attenborough,

the face of BBC natural history programmes for more than 50 years.

Thomas lived at almost exactly the same spot as the 85-year-old broadcaster, while the garden where the skull was found used to be the site of a pub said to be a favourite of the killer.

Alison Thompson, the west London coroner formerly identified the recovered skull as that of Thomas. She recorded a verdict of unlawful killing and the cause of death as asphyx-

iation and head injury.

After reviewing records of the murder from the time of her death, along with census records and radiocarbon testing, the investigating officer was able to provide the coroner with compelling evidence that the skull was indeed Thomas's.

"This is a fascinating case and a good example of how good old-fashioned detective work, historical records and technological advances came together to solve the 'Barnes Mystery'," said Richmond borough police commander Chief Superintendent Clive Chalk. — AFP

The Ananta collection, on the other hand, is “Seiko’s word for dedication to perfection”. Ananta, which is Sanskrit for 'infinite', has its design inspired by the katana, a Japanese sword. The Chronograph Diver’s version of this collection is posed as the leading watch in Seiko’s Commemorative Collection, and there’s only a limited amount of 700 pieces for the discerning connoisseur.

Besides the Ananta Diver’s watch, which is designed to be extremely durable, there are two other Ananta models that will appeal to the less outdoor demographics. The Automatic

Heart attack: What you might want to know and can occur at anytime, even in your sleep.

By dr haizal haron kamar lifestyle@mmail.com.my After discussing some common questions on high blood cholesterol last week, I feel a discussion of a heart-related topic along a similar vein would be appropriate for this week. I choose heart attack — a deadly condition that kills more Malaysians than any other disease, even in women.

Let me share with you some common questions about heart attack that I keep getting from my patients and a brief response to each.

1. How do I know if I have a heart attack?

Heart attack happens when one of the coronary arteries becomes blocked completely by a sudden formation of a blood clot, thereby stopping blood flow and causing damage to the heart muscle. You will experience a sudden severe pain in the chest, usually central but occasional on the left, radiating down the left arm and up the neck and jaw associated with profuse cold sweats. You may have difficulty in breathing. The pain typically lasts longer than 20 minutes

I have had diabetes and high blood pressure for many years. I underwent a full medical checkup at the end of last year and was referred to a cardiologist after failing my stress test. An angiogram was done and, to my surprise, one of the three main arteries was totally blocked.

The other two were apparently okay. This came as a shock to me as I have never had any chest pain. The doctor did not do any angioplasty or send me for bypass. Instead he asked me to continue with my medications as I was ‘fine’ with no symptoms. I sought a second opinion and the other doctor advised me to have an angioplasty.

2. What do I do if I have a heart attack?

Get help quick! Call 999 to get the ambulance or ask someone to do it for you.

Time is muscle – meaning the longer you delay treatment, the more extensive is the damage to your heart muscle.

If there is a delay in getting the ambulance over, get someone to drive you to the nearest hospital, not the clinic, as the latter is not equipped to handle heart attack cases.

Swallow an aspirin on your way to the hospital if you have one handy. I will explain more on aspirin later.

3. What is the treatment for heart attack?

As heart attack stems from a blood clot in the coronary artery, giving a drug that can dissolve the clot would make perfect sense. A cheap and very effective medicine is aspirin. At low doses, aspirin prevents platelet cells from sticking together causing a blood clot. Another effective method is thrombolysis and one of the commonest ‘clot-busting’ drugs used in our hospitals is Streptokinase.

Aspirin alone has been shown to reduce death from heart attack by 23 per cent and a combination with Streptokinase lowers it further to 42 per cent.

Of late, coronary angioplasty has increased in popu-

larity. Here, a patient with a heart attack is given aspirin but not Streptokinase. Instead, he is brought straight to the cardiac catheterisation lab for an emergency angiogram and angioplasty. The blocked artery can be directly visualised and then opened up. Primary coronary angioplasty, as it is called in the setting of an acute heart attack, is more effective than thrombolysis but the drawback is that it is only available in big hospitals with catheterisation lab facilities.

4. Am I at risk of getting heart attack?

If you have any of the following, you are at risk of getting a heart attack: positive family history of premature coronary heart disease, old age, male gender, certain ethnic groups, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, obesity, abnormal cholesterol levels and sedentary lifestyle. The first four are non-modifiable risk factors – that means we cannot do anything about them.

The remaining ones are modifiable factors and you should address these conditions if you have them. The more risk factors you have, the higher is your chance of getting coronary heart disease and heart attack.

5. What is the difference between heart attack and heart failure?

You know what a heart attack is by now, I’m sure. Heart

failure is when the heart fails to do what it is supposed to do, which in essence is to pump blood to the circulation. Usually, this is because the heart has become weak and the commonest cause of this is an extensive damage to the heart muscle from a heart attack. Other causes of heart failure are heart valve abnormalities and problems with the heart rhythm.

6. Can I get heart attack again?

Yes, you can. A person who has had a heart attack is more likely to get another one compared to someone who has not had any. This is why ‘secondary prevention’ is vital.

Remember the modifiable risk factors we talked about earlier.

You have to make sure that every single one is addressed to accordingly. Take your medicines religiously and pay your doctor a visit regularly.

7. Do I have to be on medications for life?

Yes. There is no cure for coronary heart disease. You also have to lead a healthy lifestyle and visit your doctor regularly.

Anuar J Dear Anuar J To get a completely blocked coronary artery without any symptom is not uncommon.

This can happen if the blockage happens over a period of time. A blockage which starts as minor gets more severe as the atherosclerotic plaque builds up. Imagine a river that becomes narrow with time. Water will somehow find its way to reach the other end of the river via small streams bypassing the blockage.

Likewise in a human’s heart.

When the coronary artery gets progressively blocked, small blood vessels are created to ensure adequate blood supply to the heart muscle. These small

blood vessels are called bridging collaterals. In an angiogram, only the main arteries and their major branches are seen but the collateral blood supply is usually invisible to the naked eye. There is a body of opinion that as long as a person has no symptoms, then there is no need to open up the blocked artery as it is assumed that adequate blood supply reaches the affected heart muscle. But there are often instances where the collateral blood supply is not sufficient and the person is symptomatic with angina despite being on full medical treatment. It is then justifiable to do angioplasty or bypass surgery to blood vessel(s) concerned.

Then there are some who just do not get chest pain even when they have a heart attack. This rather bizarre phenomenon is found among those with diabe-

tes. In this case, symptom is not a good indicator for the need to intervene with angioplasty or bypass surgery. For this group of individuals with ‘silent symptom’ of heart disease, and you are probably one of them, there are tests that can determine if opening up a 100 per cent blockage is likely to give you clinical benefit or just the risks (of angioplasty) without the benefit. They include stress echocardiogram, myocardial perfusion scan and stress cardiac MRI scan.

What I have just said probably confused you even further. Opinions vary and, sometimes, there is no one right answer.

However, in every situation, there is usually one best answer, although it may not be immediately evident. Sit down with your doctors again and get them to explain the reasons for their opinions.

ELEVEN events were called off due to a lack of participation.

Shocking as it may sound, that was the predicament faced by the Selangor Amateur Athletics Association (SAAA) which hosted the 72nd Selangor Open at Bukit Jalil over the weekend.

Among the events axed were the women’s 800m, 3000m and the 4x400 men’s and women’s relays. This is the first time so many events have been scrapped from the meet.

The organisers claim there weren't enough entries in the events as the two-day meet only drew some 150 athletes.

So it comes as no sur-

prise only four meet records were broken.

National women's discus thrower Yap Jeng Tzan broke the meet record after recording a distance of 45.52m while national walker Lo Choong Sieng clocked 44:22.17s to break the men’s 10km walk record.

The other two recordbreakers were Singaporean Scott Wong, from Wings Athletic Club, who broke the men’s discus record with a throw of 45.22m, and Navy lass Rahilah Othman, who broke the women's shot putt record with a throw of 13.45m.

“We didn’t get a good response from the other State AAAs. Only Negri Sembilan sent a contingent,” said Yogasveran.

“I’m surprised as we have three Singapore teams here (Swift Athletic Club, Wings Athletic Club and Singapore AAA). We even had runners from Botswana, Qatar and Maldives but not our local runners.”

Selangor AAA, however, kept their end of the bargain only to be disappointed by the lack of support from the people that mattered most — the athletes.

YOUNG guns Universiti Pergur uan Su lt an Idr is (UPSI) are the new Ma l ay s i a n Un i v e r s i t y Sports Council (Masum) softball champions.

Formed last January, the UPSI softball team, aka Teachers' Club, bundled out favourites and defending champions Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in the men's category.

UPSI captain Amir Asayuti Hamin, who set

up the team, said the success was unexpected.

"O ur te am compr is es of rookies. Except for me and two others — Abdul Hafiz Khaidir and Hafiz Abdullah — the others have little experience," said Amir.

"Last year, I played for Masum while Abdul Hafiz a n d Ha f i z re pre s e nt e d Kedah and Selangor respectively at Sukma recently.

"In our debut last year,

we reached the Masum sports carnival quarterfinals. This year we emerged champions.

"We hope to continue with our winning streak in the UPSI Softball Open Championships in November, which is open to clubs and State teams."

UPSI defeated UiTM 9-2 in the semifinal and edged UPM 4-3 in the final. For their efforts, the university rewarded the team with

RM1,000.

Deputy Chancellor Prof Dr Aminah Ayub topped up another RM500 to show her appreciation.

Overall, UPSI emerged fourth out of 20 public universities, emerging champions in silat, chess and softball.

Amir s aid t he te am's success contributed significantly to UPSI's key performance index in cocurriculum activities.

U N I V E R S I T I P E R G U R U A N SULTAN IDRIS (UPSI) of Perak are new Masum women's chess champions — thanks largely to two experienced players, Kwan Tszee Yeung and Guan Xin Ting.

Together with five others — Siti Hajar Salikan, Ezzaidah Sazali, Siti Nurashikin Ahmad, Nur Farahin Ahmad and Izza Hasrina Ismail — UPSI beat seven other teams to win the title.

UPSI's only defeat was to Universiti Malaya (UM) by a 3-1 margin. They still emerged champions for chalking up more victories while UM recorded several draws.

"This is my first competition since arriving in Malaysia last year. I f irst studied in a private college in KL before enrolling in UPSI," said the 21-year-old Business Management student.

"I really had a good time playing but was not given the task to play against UM's best chess player."

And Selangor are determined to net all three points against Perak in Ipoh tonight.

However, even a win will not ensure Selangor will be able to retain their title as Kelantan and Terengganu are also in the running to clinch top spot.

“We have no choice but to win,” said Selangor ace Hardi Jaafar.

“We are quite confident.

It has been an exciting season and we have to wait till the final match to decide the winners. This is good for the league.”

Hardi, a former Perak player, stressed there would be no personal sentiments when he takes on the Seladangs.

“That’s a long time ago… there’s no such attachment as I now play for Selangor and want Selangor to win.”

Hardi admitted the Red Giants would have only themselves to blame for allowing the other teams to catch up during the latter stages of the league.

“We had a bad patch and failed to shake out of it. We slowly got back into our groove but still, we wasted many opportunities.

Tottenham spur grassroots development

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR are coming to Malaysia.

No, not their football team but the English side's development programme.

They will be collaborating with the British International School of KL (BISKL).

Malaysia already have coaching programmes tied up with Arsenal and Liverpool via the Arsenal Soccer School and Liverpool's link with the KL Football Association.

However, Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt insisted the club's involvement in Malaysia would be something different.

"It is easy to franshise an academy to locals. Just give them the club's suits and a little training and the academy is good to go," said Mabbutt.

"Kids will surely improve under any sort of coaching but the question is whether such improvement is sufficient to take them to a higher level."

Retired ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (pic) was in Kuala Lumpur yesterday as part of the club’s English Premier League Asian trophy tour.

“I hope this trophy stays at Old Trafford for as long as it can,” said van der Sar, as he eyed England’s most coveted trophy.

The 41-year-old hopes the signing of David de Gea as his replacement was the right one.

“I’ve not decided on what I will do next but coaching is an option,” he added.

Van der Sar visited the Hublot Store, United's official timekeeper, to launch the ‘King Power Red Devil’ watch.

KL was the Dutchman’s first stop as he was not part of MU’s earlier tour stops in Hong Kong, China, Jakarta and Bangkok. Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Park Ji-Sung took turns visiting the four countries but had to report back for pre-season training.

Van der Sar will take the trophy to Singapore tomorrow before returning it to Manchester on Friday.

Gerrard disappointed to miss Asian tour STEVEN GERRARD was ruled out of Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia in order to continue his rehabilitation from a groin operation.

The 31-year-old midfielder will continue his individual recovery programme at the Reds' Melwood training ground while the majority of the squad fly out to China on Sunday ahead of their first friendly two days later.

"I'd really been looking forward to travelling out to China, Malaysia and Singapore and meeting first-hand as many of our fans as possible," Gerrard told the club's website.

"I'm really sorry that I won't now be able to do that.

"But after sitting down and talking with the medical experts and technical staff, it's been decided that the best course of action is for me to continue my rehabilitation programme at Melwood.

"It's disappointing I won't be with them, but I'm sure the lads who go out there will put a great

show on for our fans."

Gerrard underwent an operation in March to correct a troublesome groin problem which had been affecting him for some months. He was ruled out for the remainder of the season and last month Gerrard hinted he may not be fully fit for Liverpool's early friendlies.

He returned to training with the rest of the squad at Melwood yesterday but was not involved with the main group of players.

"Gerrard and the medical team have done fantastically well so far and they are in the final stages of getting him back to full training," said manager Kenny Dalglish.

"I'm sure there will be supporters disappointed that Gerrard is unable to be with us in Asia, but I'm sure the same people will appreciate the importance of Gerrard giving himself the best possible opportunity of being fit to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign."

MAYBANK yesterday emerged as Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) new main sponsors.

BAM will receive RM6m for the first year followed by RM7m for the next five years.

Mailsport first reported the collaboration last October.

However, BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh stressed car-maker Proton will continue to support the national body.

"Our partnership with Proton remains and we are glad to also work with Maybank," said Nadzmi.

Maldini considers return to football

LEGEND Paolo Maldini (pic) admits he would consider returning to AC Milan following his retirement from football in 2009. The 43-year-old former defender left the Italian champions following a successfilled career which spanned over two decades.

And, having spent the last two years outside of the game, Maldini believes he still has plenty to offer, but not in a playing capacity.

"For now I am working as a father, a difficult job, but if I receive an interesting offer then I could return to working in football," he told Il Girno.

"Football is my passion, my life and I know Milan like the back of my hand.

"If there are the right conditions I would be very happy to come back to the team I love and give back, in part, the many things I received," said the former captain.

Previous reports suggested the former Italy international could return to San Siro as a director.

Maldini began his Milan career in 1978 as a youth and turned professional in 1985.

He won a hoard of trophies including seven Italian titles, and five European Cups during his time at the club.

Meanwhile, Milan have completed the signing of Porto defender Ricardo Ferreira on a free transfer, according to Sky Italia.

The 18-year-old defender was being followed by several clubs across Europe after establishing himself as a core member of Porto's youth ranks.

Ferreira joins Milan for nothing following the expiry of his contract with Porto, who have also been deprived of FC Brasov-bound defender Hugo Sousa.

The Portugal Under-19 international will reportedly be part of Milan's pre-season training camp, after which manager Massimiliano Allegri will decide whether to include him in the squad for the next season.

GERMANY defeated 10-woman France 4-2 in in Moenchengladbach this morning to win Group A. The Germans will now face Japan while England take on France in the quarterfinals.

This six-goal thriller saw goals from Kerstin Garefrekes, Inka Grings (two) and Celia Okoyino da Mbabi for Germany while Marie-Laure Delie and Laura Georges replied for France.

The opening exchanges were even, although Germany shaded possession and were twice called offside when they would have been in on goal.

France seemed to be coming into the game more but their momentum was ended when Germany opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

Babett Peter executed a freekick from the left wing which was met by an onrushing Garefrekes who evaded her marker and powered a header past Sapowicz and into the top corner of the goal.

Any nerves the Germans were suffering from in front of a full

house were blown away by the opener and then completely banished seven minutes later with the second.

France had responded to the first goal reasonably well and had won a corner but the delivery was poor and Germany broke with Simone Laudehr who found herself by the left corner flag and then swung in an inch perfect cross to find Grings who got in front of Renard and made no mistake with a header from six metres out.

Germany were in complete control now and although they did not really threaten again in the first-half they dominated possession, while France were really showing nothing in the final third.

The second-half started at a slow pace and it looked like France were going to settle for second place in the group until out of nowhere they got a goal back.

picked out substitute Delie who simply had to divert the cross into the corner of the goal.

Suddenly it was game on and Germany woke up, Grings firied a freekick into the sidenetting before a mistake from France handed the advantage back to Germany.

In the 64th minute Grings slid an excellent ball in to Bajmaraj who was in on Sapowicz, the goalkeeper seemed to panic and threw herself at the incoming German, completely taking her out, and conceding a penalty. The referee then had no option but to produce a red card to Spaowicz.

Substitute keeper Celine Deville came on to face the penalty but could do nothing about Grings's effort which restored Germany's two goal advantage.

That seemed to have killed the game off, but again it was a corner that provided France hope.

It was Soubeyrand again who put in the corner kick in the 72nd minute and this time it was Georges who she picked out and her bullet header put the game in the balance yet again.

Then Germany who closed out the game well and eventually went two goals ahead again.

Grings was involved again as she flicked on a cross from the left to find Celia Okoyino da Mbabi at the back post, she calmly controlled and then fired a volley back across Deville and into the corner of the goal to finally kill the game off.

Lavezzi on City's radar MANCHESTER CITY are planning a £27m bid for Argentina international and Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Another Argentine hitman Carlos Tevez stunned City on Monday by insisting he wants to quit the club. It means manager Roberto Mancini will have to move quickly if he wants to replace Tevez.

Lavezzi, 26, is valued at £27million by his Italian club and it was revealed last month that City have already held talks about bringing him to Manchester.

As a young player in Argentina, he was hailed as "the new Diego Maradona" because of his skill and chunky build.

ELLEN WHITE scored a superb goal as England beat Japan 2-0 in Augsbug this morning to finish top of Group B. The Japanese had impressed in their opening two matches but were outplayed by England, who scored a second via substitute Rachel Yankey midway through the second-half to secure the points.

Captain Faye White and midfielder Fara Williams were both rested by England manager Hope Powell, whose side started well.

England went ahead in the 15th minute when Karen Carney picked out White with an inch-perfect through-ball and the Arsenal striker made no mistake in lobbing Ayumi

Young dos Santos says sorry for sex scandal BARCELONA'S young midfielder Jonathan dos Santos apologised for his involvement in the prostitution scandal which rocked Mexican football ahead of the on-going 2011 Copa America in Argentina.

The 21-year-old was one of eight players who were dropped from the Mexico squad after it was discovered that prostitutes had been invited into their pre-Copa base in Quito.

"I'm here to face the music. I have committed misconduct. I am very sorry for what I did and I apologise to the team, my teammates, the entire coaching staff and people of Mexico. I'm here and I assume responsibility," dos Santos said on Barca's website.

"I have to apologise to my club, and to my family. I have a very clean record — nine years at the club and there has never been any problem with me."

Dos Santos said his behaviour was an isolated incident and added he will take part in several projects as recompense for his actions.

"I have always been disciplined but we are all human beings — we've all made mistakes. I've decided to participate with the Barcelona foundation and also do something in Mexico to offset the damage."

Dos Santos was fined €3000 (RM13,000) and will face a six-month suspension period of international football.

Uruguay's hero unhappy with draw against Peru

STRIKER Luis Suarez may have struck fancied Uruguay's equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Peru in their opening Group C match at Esatadio del Bicentenario yesterday but he was far from happy.

Paolo Guerrero had earlier put Peru ahead with a cool finish after beating an off-side trap in the 23rd minute before Suarez turned saviour with his

strike just before half-time to earn the Uruguayans a point.

"We knew Peru weren't going to give us anything, like all the national teams," said Suarez.

Suarez was sent through into the box off a fine pass from midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro and the Liverpool star slid to poke the ball into the right side of the net to the relief of his teammates and their fans.

"Being a striker, it is nice to score, but it is not satisfying to give everything and not win," he said.

Suarez was easily the best player on the pitch as he created problems to the Peru defence once he was in the danger zone.

"We don't look for excuses. We had some chances.

Perhaps they were more clear in the second-half, but we don't have to look for excuses," he said.

Now there is pressure on Uruguay, who have to face formidable Chile in their second match

on Saturday (6.15am).

Suarez's fellow striker Diego Forlan gave Peru credit after holding the 14-time Copa America champions.

"They have a very good national team and we knew that they play well," said the Atletico Madrid man.

He was also asked if he expected a difficult contest.

"In all honesty, no. We didn't know it was going to be a difficult game and that it could get complicated.

They scored the goal on us and then luckily, we could draw level," said Forlan.

"I had a clear chance (created by Suarez) that would have been the second goal but it didn't happen, and then they closed the space well and dropped way back.

In this competition, if you don't take advantage, you suffer."

As for criticism regarding the tournament's lack of excitement in terms of play thus far — with four draws and eight goals in six games, Forlan expects an improvement in match quality.

"We hope it opens up and better games come from it," he said. "There are very good players and big national teams, and for that I believe it's going to get better," he said.

Sanchez: Being cool was key in win over Mexico

CHILE ace attacker Alexis Sanchez (pic) claims his side knew they could score against Mexico, and staying calm was the reason for their 2-1 comeback win in their opening Group C match at Estadio del Bicentenario yesterday.

The Mexicans, represented practically by their Under-22 side, stunned the Chileans when Nestor Araujo struck in the 40th minute.

But goals from substitute Esteban Paredes and Arturo Vidal in the 66th and 73rd minutes gave Claudio Borghi's men full points and a bright start to their campaign.

Sanchez revealed that his 46-year-old coach had words of wisdom at half-time to change their fortunes after the break.

"We talked about staying calm, that the goal would eventually come. It did, and then we had a chance to make it 2-1," said the Udinese star, who is said to join Spanish giants Barcelona during this transfer market.

Chile will now play Uruguay in a crucial match on Saturday (6.15am) and Sanchez hopes his team can reproduce the performance they had against Mexico.

"We will play the same way we played against Mexico.

All of our rivals are difficult to play against," he said.

Meanwhile, Mexico star attacker Giovani dos Santos questioned their tactics after the defeat. The 22year-old was a lone figure up front and could not do anything much as he was not well supported with his teammates busy defending.

"I think the way we planned out our game tactically was to blame. We had to play the ball along the ground more with more people upfront — I think that's the reason why we lost. We knew Chile would be tough," said the Tottenham man.

Mexico will take on Peru next on Saturday (8.45am) and badly need the three points to get back into contention for a place in the last eight and dos Santos acknowledges that an improvement is required.

"It'll be a different match, and we hope to do better in order to obtain the victory," he said.

Meanwhile, playmaker Matias Fernandez could miss Chile's match against Uruguay after limping out of the match yesterday.

"The situation with Matias is a bit complicated," said Borghi. "He didn't pull a muscle, so we don't know exactly what the problem is, but according to the doctor we have to wait 48 hours to see."

Fernandez made a bright start against Mexico but faded in the second half. If he cannot face Uruguay his natural replacement would be Jorge Valdivia, although he too is recovering from injury.

Bojan poised for new challenge with Roma Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic indicated he is on the brink of leaving the Primera Liga and Champions League winners.

The Spaniard has been strongly linked with a move away from Barca after failing to establish himself as a first-team regular at Nou Camp.

Roma, who are now managed by former Barca B boss Luis Enrique, are the likeliest destination for the 20-year-old, with the Serie A club’s sporting director Walter Sabatini admitting a deal was close on Monday.

While Bojan admitted to be on his way out of Barca, the Spain international refused to tell whether he will join the Italian capital side.

“This is a bittersweet feeling, reaching this point is not easy, but someday it would have to happen,” he said.

“I feel privileged for all I have done at the age of 20, for breaking through Barca’s youth ranks and for all I have left to do.

“I have not spoken with Luis Enrique, but I know he is interested in me and it is an honour there are teams interested in my services.”

Meanwhile, Getafe president Angel Torres claimed Bojan turned down the chance to play for the Madrid-based club so he can follow Luis Enrique to Roma.

Torres revealed how his side tried to challenge Roma by making a bid for the striker.

COLOMBIA star striker Radamel Falcao is the man who can send Argentina packing in a vital Group A clash at Brigader Lopez Stadium to-

The Lionel Messi-led Argentina did not have a bright start when they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw

by Bolivia in their opening match last Saturday, increasing the pressure they are especially facing from the home fans.

Argentina must win this match against the Colombians or find themselves out of the quarterfinals.

Colombia, after defeating Costa Rica 1-0 in their first match, are now out to scalp their more-fancied opponents who are eyeing a record 15th title.

Falcao is taking a cool approach on his mission to stun Argentina though.

“It will be a great match.

Argentina have good players and are bound to win.

Therefore, it will be a good show and something more fun than we have seen in this Cup,” he said.

“Argentina are the hosts and will seek victory, precisely because they drew the first game. We got the three points, something we value highly and that gives us peace of mind. We do not have the despair that they have, but we have the same pressure to win,” said the Porto goal-machine.

Fellow striker Adrián Ramos, scorer of the winner against Costa Rica,

said Argentina always play to win.

“So we have to think a lot about what we will do,” he said.

Defender Cristian Zapata, who was on the bench for the Costa Rica match, said it is a very important game and Colombia are playing to qualify for the second stage. This is enough warning for Argentina.

Argentina coach Sergio Batista, meanwhile, reasserted his faith in the side’s faltering attack after the disappointment against Bolivia.

The much-vaunted offensive trio of Messi, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Carlos Tevez did not shine against Bolivia where they failed to play coherently as a unit.

It was only the entrance of Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero which galvanised the team and led to a stunning equaliser by the Atletico Madrid striker, after Edivaldo Rojas had given Bolivia a shock lead.

Batista said he would make just one change from the opening match to face Colombia.

“I am going to keep my team stable, I don’t like to change from one game to the next. We will give the strikers another chance. Aguero is doing great right now, but you wait and see. I will field the same team, after that we’ll see,” said Batista.

He said his only switch would see fullback Pablo Zabaleta starting for rookie Marcos Rojo — with veteran Javier Zanetti switching to

the left flank.

“We are convinced that this is our formation, despite the disorder which hit us the other day and the desperation to win,” said Batista.

But he can always change his mind by starting with Aguero in place of Lavezzzi.

Batista revealed he talked to Messi after the Bolivia game and counselled him to stay further up the pitch in order to perform his central striker’s role to perfection.

“I was seeing Messi on the wrong side of the halfway line, and that cannot happen.

He has to play in the last quarter of the pitch, there cannot be midfielders ahead of Messi,” he said.
