Kg Lembah Jaya Utara residents stunned by discovery of charred remains of teenager
IT was a shocking find for residents of Kampung Lembah Jaya Utara in Ampang yesterday. Just metres away from their houses, in some bushes by the roadside, a dead girl was discovered with close to 80 per cent of her body burned. Her face was beyond recognition. “It was about 1.30pm when I heard a commotion outside my neighbour’s house two doors away,” said housewife Siti Fatimah Harun. “There were a lot of people gathering outside. “I thought someone had been robbed, but then I saw a dead body near the bushes in front of my neighbour’s house. I freaked out!” Snatch theft cases were common for residents there, but to discover a dead girl’s body in an area so close to home was just astonishing. “A resident had spotted the body and contacted the police,” Siti Fatimah told The Malay Mail. “Two police officers who happened to be patrolling the neighborhood were informed.” Residents could not fathom how or why the body, believed to be that of a teenage girl, had ended up in front of their houses.
By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my “Most of the clothes on the body were burnt off... the body was almost naked. It was such a horrifying sight,” Siti Fatimah recalled. Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin, who was at the scene, said the girl was believed to be between 13 and 15 years, according to the forensic team. “The body was 80 per cent burnt and unrecognisable,” he said, adding police were still trying to establish key factors of the case. “We believe she had been murdered elsewhere and then dumped here, but there is also a slight chance the body was burned here itself.” He said police scoured the area for evidence and clues but their threehour search yielded nothing. “We couldn’t find anything, no identity card... nothing.” With the body dumped so close to homes, Amiruddin hoped some of the residents could shed light on the case. “We have been interviewing residents, if they had seen any suspicious characters. So far, only one said he heard a noise like someone was walking past his house, but didn’t see anyone when he looked out.”

The resident also heard motorcycles passing by the area about 3.30am yesterday which was unusual as the neighbourhood was always quiet in the wee hours. There was also a sewage plant at the neighborhood. The charred body was found several metres away. “Our officers searched the plant but found nothing incriminating,”
said Amiruddin, adding police were also going through the area’s missing persons reports to identify the victim. The remains were sent to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the victim’s time of death. The case was classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Two-minute gold shop robbery FOUR armed men took all of two minutes to rob a goldsmith shop of five trays of jewellery in Jalan Besar, Kajang, yesterday. Two of the robbers brandished pistols, holding an unarmed security guard, five employees and a customer at bay while another smashed open the display cases about 2.45pm. They emptied the trays into a bag before escaping on two motorcycles, Kajang District Police deputy chief Supt Azman Ayob said. He said the robbers wore crash helmets and might be difficult to identify but cops will scrutinise the CCTV. The robbers are believed to be in their 30s to 40s. Azman said police recovered the hammer used to break the show cases.
Customs seize elephant tusks THE Selangor Customs Department seized 695 elephant tusks weighing two tonnes and worth RM3 million in Westport, Port Klang, yesterday. The tusks were found in one of two 20-foot containers, filled with recycled crushed plastic, that were detained in Westport last Friday but inspected thoroughly yesterday. Initial investigations showed the tusks orginated from Tanzania and were headed to China for re-export to other Asian countries. Royal Malaysia Customs Department assistant director-general (enforcement) Datuk Zainul Abidin Taib said on Aug 19, Penang Customs also seized 664 elephant tusks weighing 1.6 tonnes worth RM2.3 million. He believed the same smuggling syndicate was responsible in both cases.

Birthday cake for two
...but Bernama TV cameraman will no longer share it with youngest sister WHEN Bernama TV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor left for Somalia on a humanitarian mission on Aug 28, two days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the date Nov 14 might not have been far from his mind. As much as he was enthusiastic about his job and his love for covering humanitarian missions, it was the one date every year that was special to the 39-year-old. A peek into Noramfaizul’s biodata provided a simple logic as to why the date was so special to him — it was his birthday. But few knew this was not his birthday alone as he shared with his youngest sister. His father, Mohd Nor Md Yassin, said his son made it a point to come to the family home at Taman Serdang Raya annually for this celebration. And instead of buying two cakes, the family would buy one to be shared by the siblings, who are the eldest and youngest in the family-of-six siblings, respectively. This year’s edition of the family’s double birthday celebration could have been more special compared to the rest, as Noramfaizul would have turned 40. But as it turned out, his sister would celebrate her

birthday this year in memory of her brother who was given a hero’s burial after he was shot dead by a stray bullet in Mogadishu, Somalia. Though he admitted to being initially disapproving of his son’s work, Md Yassin said he had no regrets of Noramfaizul’s choice of career. “There were long working hours for him, but he loved the job.” This was not only the father’s
view, but also that of those who knew him from work. “He loved such work, and was enthusiastic about what he did,” said former colleague Razlan Rashid. A picture of Noramfaizul at his family home which showed him with a camera in his hands hanging from his neck and a removed facemask behind what appears to be ruined brick columns, looked very much like a picture that
defined who Noramfaizul was. Though the atmosphere at his home was sombre, there was a sense of longing in the air, with hardly a sense of regret among his loved ones. With the family accepting his passing as an unfortunate event, it was rather apparent that Noramfaizul had passed on while doing what he loved most in life. He is survived by his widow, Norazrina Jaafar, 37, and their two sons, Mohd Irfan, eight, and Mohd Naufal, three.
National Press Club comes together for a fallen comrade THE National Press Club of Malaysia (NPC) presented contributions to the family of the late Noramfaizul Mohd Nor yesterday to help fund the education of his two children. A cheque for RM3,000 was handed to Noramfaizul’s wife Norazrina Jaafar by New Straits Times Publication (NSTP) managing editor and NPC auditor Datuk Nuraina Abdul Samad at his parents' house in Taman Serdang Raya. Both the deceased's parents Mohd Nor Mat Yassin and Naemah Abd Majid were present during the cheque presentation.

Also present were NPC president Mokhtar Hussein from Bernama, deputy president Yushaimi Yahaya, who is editor-in-chief of The Malay Mail, and other NPC exco members. The contribution is to aid in the education of eightyear-old Mohd Irfan and three-year-old Mohd Naufal, and easing the burden of Noramfaizul’s 37-year-old widow, Norazrina Jaafar. Noramfaizul, 39, passed away after being struck by a stray bullet while on a humanitarian mission organised by Kelab Putera 1Malaysia in Mogadishu, Somalia.

A SPECIAL fund should be set up to protect journalists in the course of duty. This, according to Social Care Foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang, is vital in ensuring they are provided for if something untoward happens to them in the line of duty. Phang was speaking to the media present at the house of the late Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, a Bernama TV cameraman who was shot dead while on a humanitarian mission in Somalia. Those caught being cruel to animals face fines of up to RM100,000 and a jail term of not more than six months under the Animal Welfare Act to be tabled in Parliament next year -- Veterinary Services director-general Datuk Dr Abd Aziz Jamaluddin PETALING JAYA

Pet lovers hunt for 100 missing felines and 'cat hotel' owner THIS WILL NOT DO: MBPJ councilor Syed Abdul Malik said all pet shops in Petaling Jaya will be monitored from now on
HORRIFIED: Animal-lover Sheila Grewal, 35, has been giving support to distressed pet owners
WITH more than a hundred cats believed to be still missing from a "cat hotel" in Damansara Damai, about a hundred animal lovers and volunteers, including those f rom non-governmental organisations (NGOs), spent yesterday evening until midnight looking for the pets and to bring to book the people responsible. It began at a Press conference in a PJ hotel at 5pm yesterday attended by some 400 people, including cat owners who had entrusted their pets to the centrel. Animal right activists who are urging affected owners to come forward were also present The group determined that more than a hundred cats are still missing, and about a hundred animal lovers and volunteers then went to the Damansara Damai police station to convey information and to seek police help in tracking down the animals. When contacted, PJ deputy police chief Supt Meor Hamdan said police had completed investigations and submitted their report to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) for further action.

To date, more than 20 police reports have been made on the fiasco. After meeting the police, about 60 people from the group then went to the cat hotel at 11pm but found the place shuttered with nobody around. The group dispersed around midnight. However, The Malay Mail cameraman Arif Kartono who reached there at about 10pm yesterday reported seeing the family of the cat hotel owner
packing up and moving out of the premises. Cat owners who had paid for their pets to be boarded at the place so they could spend Hari Raya holidays away from home, sensed something amiss when their phone calls went unanswered. With police approval, they 'broke' into the premises on Sunday night and had a rude shock when they found 90 cats in unhygienic, inhumane conditions. The cats had suffered drastic weight
loss, dehydration and illness due to neglect and insufficient food. There were stocks of cat food around, untouched for over a week. The group then found another 70 cats in similar conditions in a nearby bungalow used by the owner. Nine cats had initially been found dead, but the fatality count rose to 13 yesterday. The hundred-odd felines still missing include breeds like Persian cats, Maine Coons and Scottish Folds. Lending support to the distressed cat owners at the Damansara Damai police station last night were Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor president Christine Chin Radford, Malaysian Animal Rights Society (Roar) president N. Surendran and representatives from Paws Mission, Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) and a new NGO called Animal Society Penang. SPCA have urged those with information on the missing cats to contact their media officer Kelvin Cheah at 017-3607212 or email kelvin. spca.gmail.com.

UNUSUAL: Leong found it strange the store owners did not bother cleaning up
SOMETHING AMISS: Wendy Chew, 45, said there had been no activity in the pet shop for the past 10 days
UPON hearing about the fiasco over the radio, Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) lecturer Nora Lina rushed back to KL last night as she had entrusted her two five-month-old Persian cats to the 'cat hotel'. "I was shocked and saddened by the news and I have not yet been able to find
out whether my two pets are okay," said Nora, 33, who reached here at 11pm. "I will not rest until I find my cats as they mean a lot to me. I have spent about RM5,000 on their upkeep." The 160-odd cats rescued from the cat hotel and bungalow are being cared for by about 20 volunteers until they are claimed
by their owners. Affected owners can look for their pets on a Facebook group page called "Kucing terbiar, Anjing jalanan" to find out which volunteer is caring for their rescued cats. Each of the 20-odd volunteers have posted pictures of the felines they are fostering on the page.

Big money in pet care JUST how much does the average owner spend on pet care, especially during holidays? After the animal abandonment incident at a 'Cat Hotel' in Damansara Damai, The Malay Mail spoke to a company offering boarding and grooming services to find out how much people are willing to fork out on their pets when they go on holiday. We charge RM18 a day for boarding and offer discounts if many pets are entrusted to us," said Raining Cats and Dogs Enterprise's Bangsar branch manager, Jeffrey Chai. "During the recent Hari Raya celebrations, we took in about 50 pets from 30 customers, as some brought in more than two each," Chai said they do not board too many pets as they have limited space and pet safety is important. Clients are expected to provide addresses, MyKad identity numbers, handphone numbers and emergency contact numbers in addition to signing an agreement with the centre. Chai said pets sent in must also have had up-todate vaccinations before the centre agrees to look after them. Some customers who board their pets also get them groomed. Fees for grooming services range from RM30 to RM50. Chai said people are willing to fork out a lot on their pets. "Some people own up to seven pets and can spend about RM2,000 to RM3,000 a month on pet food alone."
Animal lovers keep vigil at 'cat-astrophic' centre ANIMAL-LOVERS are still keeping vigil a day after police and outraged pet owners found 12 dead felines boarded at a cat hotel during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Merdeka Day break. It was reported yesterday that almost 100 cats, found covered in faeces and urine, had been neglected for some 10 days at the boarding centre at the Seasons Square Plaza in Damansara Damai. Up to seven cats had been crammed into large cages and up to five were kept in smaller ones, while others had not even been taken out of their carriers from the start. The

cages had also been stacked on top of one another with only a small window left open for ventilation. Sheila Grewal, a 35-yearold sales manager from Kota Damansara, was one of the volunteers who helped with rescue operations. "We've been giving emotional support to owners as they have become depressed over the incident," she said, adding that awareness had quickly spread through Facebook and Twitter. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) help, the rescued animals were temporarily placed in various homes. Sheila urged all pet owners to join Facebook group "Kucing Terbiar & Anjing Jalanan" so they can identify them via their photo gallery. However, their main concern is to find another 100 cats kept in an unknown location. "Records found at the shop, show roughly 300 animals were entrusted to the cat hotel during Hari Raya," she said. Earlier, Sungai Buloh residents found 100 cats abandoned at a terrace house. Neighbours were taken aback
when they read media reports. Sales clerk Wendy Chew, who works in a sticker shop, said there was a strong smell emanating from the first-floor shop in the past 10 days. "However, none of us checked it out because there was no unusual activity." Mobile phone shop assistant Leong Yau, 37, said no one appeared to be at the shop during this period. "After getting the smell, I did find it unusual the store owners did not bother to clean up," he admitted. Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) Zone 1 councillor Syed Abdul Malik A. Hamid Al Jafree, said the
operator will be compounded RM250 and monitored in future. "We found the operator only had a licence for distributing cat food, which had expired in 2009. They are not a licensed boarding house." Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) enforcement chief Subra Ellappan said they were investigating the matter. "For now, we are collecting all related police reports and are awaiting the postmortem results for the dead animals," he said. He urges pet owners involved to come forward to help their investigations.

Task force to iron out issues before lifting of ban THE two-year moratorium on Indonesians wishing to work in Malaysia as domestic help, initially expected to be lifted by Hari Raya, has been delayed. However, both countries have formed a joint task force to enforce their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the maids issue. The Indonesian Embassy's minister counsellor for information, social and cultural affairs, Suryana Sastradiredja, told The Malay Mail yesterday numerous issues had to be ironed out and looked into before the ban could be lifted. "The joint task force will also come up with solutions for existing maid-related problems or any such problems that could arise in the future. "For example, if a maid runs away without reason, the maid agency should replace the maid. However, if the agency fails to do so, there should be some sort of action taken against it. "This is where the mechanisms on the implementation of the MoU will come

He would not elaborate on who the members were but said they had not been assigned any duties yet. "Our next step would be to determine the duties and purpose of each member. Sheikh Yahya had said the deadline was decided following a meeting between both countries the week before, when they agreed the MoU, signed in Bandung, Indonesia, on May 30, would be implemented and enforced. He had said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar would make an announcement on the matter "soon". Sheikh Yahya also denied rumours the Indonesian government was waiting for the outcome of the murder case of house maid Isti Komariyah before deciding to end the ban on maids coming to Malaysia.
Controversial adman Zecha steps down
COLOURFUL advertising veteran Austen Victor Lauw Zecha (pic), who threw the Tourism Ministry into disarray earlier this year with accusations of graft and preferential treatment in the awarding of contracts, has retired as president of ad agency TBWA-ISC Malaysia Sdn Bhd. However, Zecha, when met yesterday, said he was not retiring but merely looking at slowing down. “I am significantly not retiring from ISC (Integrated Strategic Communications Sdn Bhd), just from TBWA, but even then from Sept 30,” said the 71-year-old who

founded ISC. New York-based TBWA started a joint venture with ISC in 2001 to tap the Malaysian markets. Zecha, who is of Dutch descent, refuted claims his stepping down had anything to do with the defamation suit against him by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. He is scheduled to read out an apology to Dr Ng in the High Court here on Sept 15 for allegations he made against her in an interview over radio channel BFM 89.9
on March 18. “I cannot reveal why I'm backing down (settling the case) due to legal reasons, but I must fulfill my part,” he said, explaining his apology was part of the out-of-
court settlement he reached with Dr Ng. He said his retirement was something he planned a year ago before the whole Tourism Ministry issue came to light. “I am still with TBWA-ISC until the end of this month. If my retirement was really about the case with Dr Ng, I would have stepped down much earlier." In February, Zecha caused a stir in the ministry and the advertising industry when his company ISC withdrew from bidding for part of the RM314 million annual advertising and promotions contract, citing “ambiguous” tender procedures.
ISC had monopolised the Tourism Malaysia's Western market for 12 years, with Zecha claiming credit for the “Malaysia Truly Asia” campaign. It came to light later that ISC would not be receiving the contract for another term. Meanwhile, TBWA-ISC yesterday announced a management restructuring with the appointment of its chief operating officer Aaron Cowie as managing director. Also, executive vice-president Datuk Tim Garland was named capital markets communications consultant focusing on developing Asean financial markets.

MAIL Q&A
Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria appointed as new Chief Justice effective Sept 12 to succeed Tun Zaki Azmi — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak
The Malay Mail Tuesday 6 september, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR
The reluctant Chief Justice Zaki told former PM: 'Eight reasons why I should not be CJ'
TO say his appointment three years ago raised eyebrows is an understatement. The then Datuk Seri (now Tun) Zaki Azmi was, after all, a practising lawyer representing Umno. And for all intents and purposes, he was “parachuted” into the judiciary, directly appointed to the Federal Court in 2007 and a year later, fasttracked to Chief Justice (CJ). However, Zaki, who retires on his 66th birthday on Sept 12, revealed he was a reluctant judge. “I gave the Prime Minister about eight reasons why I should not be CJ,” he said in a recent interview with The Malay Mail. Top of his mind was the fact his firm, Rashid & Lee, had the ruling party as a major client. “The first reason was that I am an Umno lawyer,” said
By Terence Fernandez terence@mmail.com.my
Zaki, adding that the then Prime Minister Datuk Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, also known as Pak Lah, during a long drive from Putrajaya to Malacca, tried to allay his fears by asking him to discharge his duties without fear or favour. Another issue Zaki was uncomfortable about, was his marital issues in 2005 which became public fodder when he took a second wife. “I explained to the PM the backlash he could expect, but I had to say 'yes' because the PM had come down to my level to ask me,” said Zaki. As he had stated previously, Zaki stressed he never sat on any cases concerning Umno. “I have not heard any Umno case or any case involving the

government politically. I don’t even constitute a panel. I tell my PCA (President of the Court of Appeal), you decide! My conscience is clear! I don’t want to pretend to do something but then do something else,” he said. But, he conceded, negative public perception was something that does not go away.
“They can say I can influence in a certain way. But what to do?” Zaki, who also answered questions from The Malay Mail readers who tweeted this writer, tried to explain his connection to Umno: “Many people don't understand me. I was the advisor to Umno. I didn't participate in politics. I
was on the disciplinary board, so whether you are Team A or Team B, I don't care. I suspended Pak Lah's relative! Of course, you have some sympathy for your client but you don't go out and campaign for them!” Zaki stressed that judges have minds of their own and he never interfered in their
decisions. One example is sensitive cases such as the “Allah” issue which was presided by a non-Muslim judge. However, he said, the early retirement of two non-performing judges was meant to send the message that judges must not only give quality judgments but must also be diligent. On graft, Zaki said improving efficiency in the court system had helped reduce opportunities for corruption. Zaki, who recovered from a heart attack in May, said he was going to slow down for a while after his retirement, but hopes to continue contributing. Returning to practise law, however, is not an option. “It's not right!” he said, in a subtle jab at senior members of the bench whose postretirement plans include being consultants to legal firms.

MAIL Q&A
Q
What is your response to critics who say the Court had lost a great opportunity to address outstanding Constitutional issues with regard to the S. Shamala case? (Shamala, 39, a former bank clerk who has moved overseas, was embroiled in a custody battle over her two sons with her Muslim convert husband.) I regret most was A What that even senior counsel did not want to see the ratio decidendi (rationale for the decision) of Shamala. What Shamala's case says is very simple: you want to get the help of the court, you come to the court first. You run away from Malaysia with your child in breach of a court order and you want the court to help you? That's not right. If we give exemption and give a decision without her coming to court, you encourage others to do the same... breach the court order, send an emissary to argue for you… if you lose, you stay back, if you win, you come back! That's why Justice Richard Malanjum said: “Tails, I win, heads you lose!” The issue of conversion was never raised. It's not that the court refused to decide. Come back here and the court will make the necessary decision. But lawyers don't see that! Perhaps for their own reasons, political or otherwise, they refuse to see the reasoning and accuse the court of evading the question! question was never Q The raised? the question was put A Yes, before the court but the court would not address the question until Shamala comes back. She has a contempt proceeding, you know?
Q
Looking at Shamala's case, we put ourselves in her place as a mother. There are no guarantees the children would not be taken or returned to her later. The court is not in the position to give those guarantees? to make it clear that A II want am not here to defend the decision. I want to further explain what the judgment was all about. I'm not here to defend the judgment. We are not obliged to defend our decisions.
Q
Are you agreeable that in the absence of a solution, since everyone from politicians to the judiciary are treating it as a hot potato — someone has to make the decision? the case comes, the A When time comes, the Court will decide. I'm confident of it, although the public or certain groups of politicians don't like it, we will decide, and we have decided. Tun Abdul Hamid
'Judge me by my deeds'
Q
In Shamala's case, one party is a non-Muslim, correct? don't know what the A Ianswer is, but we have to answer. We cannot answer hypothetical questions but once it comes before the Court, we will decide.
Q A
You were a reluctant judge, right? I gave the then Prime Minister (PM) about eight reasons why I should not be Chief Justice (CJ). The first reason was that I am an Umno lawyer! He said once I am there, decide as a judge. He said if I did not do anything wrong, I should not worry. So the PM (Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, now Tun, also known as Pak Lah) explained the plan for my succession. And I explained the backlash he could expect. But for three days I got scolding from my wife for accepting the job... but I had to say 'yes' because the PM had come down to my level to ask me, how to say 'no'? the fact remain Q Doesn't you can sever your links with Umno but not the perception? after I retire, I don't A Even want anything to do with politics. Many people don't understand me. I was advisor to Umno. Full stop. I didn't participate in politics. I was on the disciplinary board, so whether you are Team
A or Team B, I don't care. I suspended Pak Lah's relative! Whoever appears before me will get a fair hearing. I'm never interested in the individuals. Of course, you have some sympathy for your client (in this case, Umno) but you don't go out and campaign for them!
Q
When we asked Pak Lah, he defended his decision to appoint you, saying you are not from within the ranks and thus not affected by the negative perceptions heaped onto the judiciary. He was also comfortable with your work and trusted you would help in the reforms he was pursuing in regaining confidence in the judiciary. What is your view on this? was fortunate the Bar A IC ouncil took me as a member of the Bar, as opposed to someone working for the party in power. But I had to prove myself!
Q A
D o you t h i n k you have? Yes! I will not hear any case relating to Umno until I've been accepted as impartial. Throughout my years, I have not heard any Umno case or any case involving the government politically. And some cases, I don't even constitute a panel. I tell my PCA (President of the Court of Appeal), you decide! My conscience is clear! I don't want to pretend to do something but then do something else.
Q A
Doesn't the fact you are CJ evoke perceptions? I know, I know… that I can influence in a certain way! As CJ, I can say “see lah, help, help lah!” I know what you mean, but what to do?
7
was concerned, we managed a good deal and as far as the integrity of the judiciary itself, I believe there is more respect now. Independence of the judiciary is more recognised and respected now. So when in the past, parties appearing before a judge were unsure they could get a fair hearing, they can now rest assured they will. Of course, there will be complaints. Judges are humans. They have their own idiosyncrasies. Some are proprosecution, others pro-defendant. Some are called hanging judges. Some are patient, others are impatient. Just because one person is like that, it doesn't reflect on the whole judiciary. I'm also impatient. I heard six cases in 90 minutes today! But I read my case papers. If you don't read your papers and ask funny questions, of course, the lawyers will complain.
THE proof of the pudding is in the eating. In his first interview since recovering from a heart attack in May, outgoing Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi, who retires on Sept 12, tells The Malay Mail executive editor Terence Fernandez that his work over the last three years will speak for itself, whether he has been able to shed the controversy surrounding his meteoric ascension to head the judiciary. Here's the first part of the interview, with the concluding part tomorrow. Mohamad (Zaki's predecessor as Chief Justice) had touched on the issue. If you look back in history, the Court already ruled that Muslims would be dealt with by the Syariah Court but the non-Muslims weren't happy with that. They want Civil Courts to answer.

Q
Q
Your initiatives, such as KPIs (key performance indicators) and even installing video recorders, in itself, is perceived as undue influence? I thought that is A Why? transparency… transparency at its best! If the judge says something wrong or behaves improperly, it is recorded! So now there are hardly any complaints about judges or lawyers as they don't misbehave in court. The lawyers behave themselves, the judges also behave because they know their behavior will be recorded. Even I am conscious of it! You think what you want to say, you don't just say it!
Q
Are there concerns that with such initiatives where judges are made to account, one makes “popular” decisions? They have to make A No! a lot of decisions which are unpopular. Decisions are popular to one party but not popular to the losing party. What the camera prevents is judges making rude remarks and lawyers behaving rudely. Now everything starts at 9am and everybody is punctual. Even the lawyers are punctual. It is more transparent, and if there are complaints, they are on record.
Q
You feel lawyers who are politicians are the ones who usually “misbehave”? right! So now, I A That's don't get complaints of these lawyers misbehaving.
Q
Have the initiatives you introduced affected the smaller firms rather than the bigger firms that have enough manpower to cope with the swift hearing dates being set
following your fast-tracking system to clear the backlog? of the questions A Most you ask relate to justice... fast-track justice... but what about the judges? Look at the judge from Penang who went to hear a case in Kedah on his off day, but the counsel did not turn up. Like I tell the lawyers, you are collecting fees faster as your cases are being heard faster. You should not be complaining. When you lose, you say “the judge is on the take”!
Q
Under your stewardship, many members of the Bar Council entered the judiciary as Judicial Commissioners (JC). How does this augur for the morale of the career judges? from the Bar are A People quite junior, if you are good, you are promoted, otherwise you will remain. I don't believe in appointing based on seniority. It's all about merit. Of course, seniority counts but merit is paramount. But in a way, I feel everyone has accepted that if you are good, you get promoted.
Q
Did you feel that you had a lot to prove to the other judges? predecessor) Tun A (Zaki's Abdul Hamid Mohamad said to me: “Zaki, I can sit here for the next one year and just pass the time. You have to prove yourself.” For me, it is a two-pronged approach to integrity and management ability. When I took over as CJ, I was asked what are the challenges. There were two: Clearing the backlog and the integrity of the judiciary. Not so much my own integrity because mine was related to Umno. So, as far as the backlog
The perception of the judiciary was at an all-time low post-1988. Do you agree that Chief Justices since then had a hard task setting this perception right? not for me to say, it's A Itforis people to perceive. I took over in 2008, I had to change the perception, and I think I got to change the perception. They know I am a serious guy! I got two judges to retire but not for corruption, but because they were not doing their work.
Q A
And the other two who retired before you joined? Oh, that was corruption, no doubt about it! I know! Sad but true.
Q
Can we revisit your statement about “having to bribe” court officers so your files will move faster? I said it. It was recordA Yes ed, so I cannot deny, but I don't want to reopen the subject. What I said is that I paid, but I meant that my clerks had to be on good terms with the clerk of the courts. To me that was corruption.
Q
There is a fine line between public relations and corruption? it was the wrong A Maybe choice of words. Maybe I should have said that we had to do “good PR”, but it is still corruption. I see it as that! If I pay you to do your job, that is corruption. If you do something nice for me and I do something to thank you, it's OK. But if I say “Nah, do this for me, have a drink on me”, that's also corruption and it was going on very heavily. Files got lost. But now because of the efficiency, the level of corruption has reduced as we have reduced the opportunities for corruption.

No warranty for LCD Only manufacturer defects covered, camera purchaser told
ALMOST two months after buying a camera from an I-GATE Cyberstation outlet in Kajang, CHOO SANG CHOON says he found the camera's Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen damaged. CHOO, of Klang, says although he bought the Olympus VG-130 compact camera on June 11, he has not been using it often and keeps it in a leather case. "Recently, I noticed the LCD on my camera was only half-working. I can snap a picture but when I want to view the image, only half the screen would be displayed while the other half is blank," he says. When he refused, the staff there told him to send his camera to Olympus directly if he wants it fixed.

She says this is the standard warranty practice for all mobile phones and cameras that have LCD screens. No secret, theirs was an unsatisfactory meal
AFTER a hard day's work on Aug 23, HERDAWATI LATIFF was looking forward to breaking her fast with her husband. The couple only managed to buka puasa with dates and mineral water because of their busy schedule

KL: Water woes
Let's see some action on water management
IT is quite intriguing to see some parties in the water supply industry making a mantra of "we will face a water shortage" (if mega projects are not allowed to proceed) while not taking any initiative of their own to manage demand in a State such as Selangor where water consumption is excessive in the domestic, non-domestic and non-revenue sectors. Little has been done, for exam-
ple, in the last couple of years to bring down our non-revenue water which remains high at 32.5 per cent. Domestic consumers are often being chided for the high levels of consumption. While there is some truth to this, the fact is it is the usage in the non-domestic sector that has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years. Between 2005 and 2009,
domestic consumption grew by 2.7 per cent in Selangor while non-domestic consumption grew by 44 per cent. Meanwhile, the GDP for the same area grew by only 24 per cent. In this period, for the whole of Malaysia, nondomestic consumption grew by 27 per cent while the GDP only grew by 16 per cent. These figures point to our decreasing economic productivity of water. In fact, many countries
have shown it is possible to reduce overall water usage while the economy continued to expand but in Malaysia, the growth of our GDP does not even match the astronomical growth in nondomestic water usage. There is thus little justification for the massive increases in consumption by the non-domestic sector and it is this sector that is driving demand for mega projects of late, not the domestic sector.
PJ: Subang Ria Park
Time to spruce it up
RESIDENTS in Subang Jaya and USJ wish to know the latest news or development of Subang Ria Park after the Selangor Mentri Besar announced the State government will find ways to acquire the land back from Sime Darby Property. Some time in August, two women walkers were attacked by two ferocious monkeys while they were walking up a slope at the southern end of the park. They actually saw a few monkeys roaming from a distance but did not suspect any untoward incident would occur. However, the monkeys suddenly pounded at one of the women from the back and that gave her the fright of her life. Unexpectedly, she fell flat, face down on the walking track, screaming so fearfully and loud, as though she had been waylaid by snatch thieves. Her screams and shouts for help had made other walkers in the park turn their heads around to see what had happened. Unfortunately, they were unable to render any help as they were too far away at the other end of the park. Luckily for her, she did not lose consciousness, otherwise, she would have been bitten by the monkeys. When she stood up, the monkeys fled in different directions back into the woods. The question is, what would it be like if the “victims” had been children or elderly people? Of late, s ome one had dumped heaps of rubbish into the lake. The stench coming from the illegal rubbish “dump site” is a concern to walkers because they believe it is bad for health. Like it or not, all walkers in Subang Ria Park have to pass that area since the track goes around it.
NEGLECTED: The Subang Ria Park needs to be made safer for residents
Sime Darby should see to it and put a stop to all illegal dumping of carton boxes and other materials into the lake and any culprit(s) caught in the act should be given a fine, say, of RM500 each. Sime Darby, as the owner of the Public Recreation Park or rather the Subang Ria Park, and also the developer of homes and properties in Subang Jaya and USJ, has a duty and obligation to dress up the place. This Subang Ria Park had been referred to as the one of many infrastructures that, when put in place (completed), will allow residents to while away their leisure hours or spend quality time with their families. It had been used to lure buyers and promote sales of properties in the township from the very beginning, that
is, when the then UEP (now Sime Darby) launched the sales for the first and second phases of houses in the new township. Unfortunately, Sime Darby chose to remain silent about their obligations or rather what they should be doing for the park after they had sold all the homes and properties in Subang Jaya. They knew the residents or house owners and stakeholders wanted them to dress up the park, to upgrade and to maintain it as well rather than letting it stay in a dilapidated state as it is now. The walking track definitely needs to be paved. There were incidences of elderly men and women tripping and falling when they were walking up the hilly part of the track, where the roots of trees had sprung
up inside out. Some were injured and had to stay home. We only knew that it took them several weeks to recover when they returned to the park. This is something that can be avoided and a new layer of tar for the walking track will make it safer for everyone to jog or walk. A developer in USJ Subang Jaya has hinted to the walkers it is willing to resurface the track for free if Sime Darby gives the nod. This is a win-win situation for Sime Darby and the residents — an offer like that is too good to give it a pass. So, how about it, Sime Darby? Lau Bing Chairman Consumers Association of Subang Jaya
Clearly, there is a need for the non-domestic sector (industrial, commercial and institutional) to rein in its water usage. This can be done by undertaking a water efficiency plan that aims to meet industry benchmarks. In many countries, high-volume users in the non-domestic sector are required by the authorities to implement a water efficiency plan. While the authorities in Malaysia have not initiated
this yet, high-volume users can show leadership by undertaking to implement a water efficiency plan to reduce water usage. Meanwhile, is it too much for the rakyat to expect those chanting the mantra "we will face a water shortage" to do something to help reduce both excessive demand and excessive nonrevenue water? KL: Death of cameraman in Somalia
He did his best for nation
WAR correspondents, including television cameramen, face great risks in war-torn countries in reporting the latest news to their television stations or networks. Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, the Bernama TV cameraman and an experienced and seasoned professional, knew this. He was a volunteer and a member of the media accompanying the Putera 1Malaysia Club humanitarian aid mission which distributed 550 tonnes of food to 500,000 families. Noramfaizul took the risk knowing very well it could be his last assignment in his quest to provide the best news and visual images for prime-time news coverage for Malaysian viewers and the world to see. But, as fate has it, Noramfaizul died in the line of duty when he was shot and killed by a stray bullet. He died trying to give us the best visual coverage. An unfortunate shooting incident which should not have happened as he was in a vehicle being driven in a safe zone metres away near the camp where they were staying in Mogadishu. In the eyes of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Malaysians alike, Noramfaizul was a hero. A camp in Somalia
was named after him in his memory. That is good as at least the Somalians now know a Malaysian died while giving them aid for them to fight famine. It was heartwarming to see the Prime Minister and his deputy were at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang waiting for the arrival of Noramfaizul’s coffin. They also joined the solat jenazah (a special prayer for Muslims who died) with others at the RMAF mosque. The Prime Minister had shortened his trip to Perth, Australia, to pay his last respects to Noramfaizul. A classic example of what a true leader should be where the rakyat is close to his heart – individually or in a group. The cameraman was just an ordinary man in the street but the celebrity-like status accorded to Noramfaizul was unbelievable. Some say he died a martyr. So be it. My condolences to his wife, Norazrina Jaafar, and his family. Be patient and be strong. May his soul rest in peace. To injured Aji Saregar Mazlan, the cameraman from TV3, may you recover quickly. Mohd Faizal Abdullah
Help our poor first CONDOLENCES to the family, and speedy recovery to the injured. Why do we need to send our media personnel to these dangerous places? We should mind our own business and let the UN, Red Cross and other richer countries do their work. Instead of wasting so much money on these missions, why don't we use it to help the poor and
needy in our own country? I, for one, do not watch this type of documentaries and news as there is enough already in the media. Local programmes like BersamaMu, Finding Angels and others are much more interesting, relevant, and touching reality to the hearts. Once again, condolences to the family. Autobots

Council extends hour-long parking limit to more areas TWENTY months after 'successfully' introducing the onehour parking limit system in the Taipan commercial zone at USJ 10 here, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has extended the system to heavy traffic areas, such as USJ 15, USJ 16 and USJ 17, and next to be covered could be Puchong Jaya and Bandar Kinrara. "We plan to amend our bylaws under the Road Transport Act 1987 so we could extend
the hour long parking system to new areas," said council deputy president Abdullah Marjunid yesterday. "Since we launched the onehour parking system on a three-month trial basis in USJ Taipan from January 2010, we have found it to be effective as motorists have to vacate their parking spots within an hour or risk having their vehicles clamped." to park longer could use the multi-storey car park in the Taipan commercial zone. The council's public relations officer Asfarizal Abdul Rashid said once the hour-long parking system is implemented in heavy traffic areas, parking should be less of a headache. Council enforcement officer Ainul Sani said there were
1,800 parking bays at USJ Taipan and illegal doubleparking is at its worst from 11am to 2pm during working days. "Our tow trucks roam this area. Motorists who frequent this area are well aware of the risk of having their vehicles towed away if they doubleparked," he said. "USJ Taipan is meant to be a pedestrian boulevard where double-parking incon-
veniences other motorists and pedestrians alike." In a random survey at USJ Taipan yesterday, The Malay Mail found motorists generally supportive of the one-hour parking system. Kevin Nam, 35, a USJ 15 resident, applauded the council's enforcement for the one-hour parking system. "Those who do quick errands will find paying 50 sen for an hour of parking reasonable
rather than paying RM2 to RM3 per hour at private car parks," he said. "However, double-parking remains a constant problem due to inconsiderate motorists." To encourage offenders pay their current and outstanding summonses, MPSJ extended its RM10 discount period, which began earlier this year. This grace period ends later this month.
Learning from the past to move on I AM following with great amusement the on-going brouhaha surrounding PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu’s alleged communist remarks in his reference to the 1950 Bukit Kepong tragedy. The politician, amidst raging criticisms from many quarters, denied he glorified communist insurgents, labelling them as heroes, who in their attack on the police station killed 25 police personnel and their families. Mohamad Sabu, who received the backings from some Pakatan Rakyat leaders and non-governmental organisations, claimed he was misunderstood. Personally, it is amusing to see how an incident in the past — which we all, Malaysians, should learn from — has turned into a could-have-been-avoided series of heated arguments. That aside, please bear with me a story of the past about two “blood brothers”, Datuk Yeop Mahidin Mohamed Shariff and Che Dat Anjang Abdullah who fought side by side in a war but later became each other’s biggest enemy in an another conflict. Yeop Mahidin and Che Dat, better known as Abdullah CD, were cousins, born in Lambor Kiri, Parit, Perak, in 1918 and 1923, respectively. Author Noel Barber, who also penned among others the bestseller Tanamera, in The War of the Running Dogs provides a special section, titled The Cousins, to the duo in his 1971 book about the Malayan Emergency, from 1948 to 1960. As cousins, they played and went to school together. I was also told they sat next to each in class at the Anderson School (now SMK Anderson) in Ipoh, Perak. It was documented that Yeop Mahidin later went to the Malay
I Don’tCare With Muzli Mohd Zin
ON TUESDAY College Kuala Kangsar in preparation for his life in the civil service, while Che Dat entered politics when he joined the Kesatuan Melayu Muda. To cut the story short, both became freedom fighters during the Japanese occupation, sacrificing their lives and fighting ‘side by side’, under different banners but with the same mission, against the brutality of the then Imperial Japanese army. Yeop Mahidin, who was trained by Force 136, established Gerila Wataniah Pahang, while Che Dat fought under the Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Army, better known as MPAJA. After the departure of the Japanese, they were separated by their ideologies and torn apart by their passions and beliefs when Che Dat joined and later on became one of the leaders of the Communist Party of Malaya, or CPM. During the Emergency, they ended up on the opposite sides of the war. Che Dat formed the 10th Regiment of the CPM in Temerloh, Pahang, and staged a series of terror attacks in the State, including one in Kuala Kurau, Pahang, declaring it the first communist ‘liberated area’ and holding it for five days. In the same year of Bukit Kepong tragedy in 1950, Yeop Mahidin, who was private secretary to the then Sultan of Pahang, was sent to quell his cousin, Che Dat, following appeals for help from kampung folks.
Yeop Mahidin then set up the legendary Home Guards and tracked down his cousin and other CPM insurgents in the deep jungles of Pahang. From “blood brothers” and playing buddies, they turned bitter enemies. Che Dat had even sent a bullet in an envelope with a note saying they were no longer cousins and a bullet in his body would all Yeop Mahidin would get from him. They were out to kill each other. After spending months in the jungle, Yeop Mahidin managed to lay an ambush on Che Dat and his party. Che Dat, however, managed to escape with his cousin hot on his heels. They came face to face at a river with guns pointing at each other. As documented by Barber, they inexplicably couldn’t pull the trigger despite trying with all their might. Rumours had it that both were equipped with extraordinary powers. Che Dat fled to Thai border and was never a serious threat again. After the Emergency, the Home Guard was disbanded and the Territorial Army was formed in 1958, with Yeop Mahidin appointed as the first director with the rank of Colonel. Having read about them in the book, I can’t be blamed for thinking their hate against each would last forever.
After all, one of them could be a dead man at the river in the deep jungle of Pahang. But, I was wrong. Some 14 years ago, in a hushhush visit by Che Dat, surrounded by Special branch officers, to Yeop Mahidin’s rented terrace house in Puchong Perdana, I witnessed a spectacular act of forgiveness. The cousins, both in their late 70s, were hugging and crying. There wasn’t an iota of hate in the air, despite their last encounter, more than 40 years ago, with guns aimed at each other’s head. They learned from the past and they turned wiser. For what they fought for, I would want to believe, was not for self-interest. They had different beliefs then. And, time made their hearts grow fonder again. Time healed their wounds. If only our politicians can learn from the past and move on. As we move forward to build this country, we can afford to avoid quarrels over our past. Why should we touch on sensitive issues that occurred more than 61 years after the event as is the case of the Bukit Kepong tragedy? Have we not learned anything good from it? MUZLI MOHD ZIN and his wife cherish the copy The War of the Running Dogs which was personally autographed by Abdullah CD and a rare picture of Yeop Mahidin and the latter together during the visit. In the novel, Yeop Mahidin was offered to undergo military training in Britain but he sent a certain Captain Abdul Razak Hussein and Lieutenant Muhammad Ghazali Shafie instead. A BRITISH inquiry into claims of complicity in the mistreatment of alleged terrorists will examine accusations the country's spies helped with the rendition of suspects to Libya, a spokesman said yesterday. Prime Minister David Cameron set up the Gibson inquiry in July last year to probe allegations that British intelligence were complicit in the torture of extremists on foreign soil after the 9/11 attacks on the United States. The inquiry had focused on Guantanamo Bay detainees but said it would examine British links to the ousted Libyan regime after the discovery at the weekend of files in Tripoli which suggested MI6 involvement in rendition to Libya. "The inquiry is looking at the extent of the UK government involvement in or awareness of improper treatment of detainees including rendition," a spokesman for the inquiry, headed by retired judge Peter Gibson, said in a statement. The CIA used secret rendition flights after the 9/11 attacks to transport terror suspects to third countries for interrogation. Many suspects later said they were tortured. — AFP

Libyans mull retaliation for arms sent to Gaddafi
LIBYA'S new leadership has evidence Muammar Gaddafi bought arms this year from sanctions-busting traders in China and Europe, many of them via Algeria, but are split over how far to retaliate against governments who failed to stop it. Officials of the National Transitional Council (NTC) made plain that feelings are running high against neighbouring Algeria, which one described as Gaddafi's "right-hand man". Libya may also seek legal and diplomatic redress against sup-

pliers and governments. But representatives of the NTC, which is still forging its common policies two weeks after ending 42 years of oneman rule, also stressed a need to work with major powers like China, and to let bygones be bygones, be that selling the guns Gaddafi used against the rebels or CIA and MI6 cooperation with his agents. "We have gathered evidence from many sources, including the main documents that were gathered here in Tripoli, that point the finger at several
countries that had been supplying Gaddafi with weapons and arms, as well as intelligence officers," said Abdul Rahman Busin, an NTC military spokesman. China, anxious that its lukewarm stance on the uprising not cost it oil and contracts in the new Libya, responded yesterday to the publication of unearthed Libyan documents seeming to show State firms offered Gaddafi weaponry. It confirmed some staff met Libyan envoys in July without the State's knowledge.
6.6-magnitude quake hits Indonesia A 6.6-MAGNITUDE earthquake hit the northern part of Indonesia's Sumatra island early today, the US Geological Survey said. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake was too far inland to generate a tsunami. — AFP
"In July, the Gaddafi government sent personnel to China without the knowledge of the Chinese government and they engaged in contact with a handful of people from the companies concerned," Foreign Minister spokeswoman Jiang Yu said. "The Chinese companies did not sign arms trade contacts, nor did they export military items to Libya," she added, saying those Chinese involved would be dealt with "in a serious way". Jalal al-Gallal, a spokesman
for the NTC, said "I believe" Chinese assurances that Beijing was unaware of arms sales. "The persons who are trying to bring it into Libya are the ones to blame," he said. "Algeria is more to blame than the Chinese themselves, with all honesty. Even if the Chinese knew it was destined for Libya, they weren't delivering it there. "It's a mistake. We regret it very much. But we need to look forward, we need to progress, we can't dwell on these things." — Reuters
Syrian forces in deadly raids Deadly raids across Syria Arab League chief to visit Damascus in bid to help solve crisis
Obama challenges Republicans A FIRED-UP US President Barack Obama today bluntly told Republicans to "show us what you got," stiffening his rhetoric ahead of his pivotal national address on jobs later this week. Obama, seeking to restart stalled US job creation, revive the economy and his own tumbling political fortunes, issued his most strident challenge yet to rivals he accuses of putting political gain before their patriotic duty. "Yes, times are tough. But we've been through tough times before," Obama said. "I don't know about you but I'm not scared of tough times." Obama offered a glimpse of the initiatives he will offer in an address to the joint chambers of Congress on Thursday, confirming he would push for a scheme to repair infrastructure and for the extension of a payroll tax cut. — AFP

SECURITY forces launched deadly raids to crush anti-regime dissent yesterday, activists said, as the Red Cross gained access to a Damascus jail for the first time in Syria's uprising. Activists said at least 13 people were killed in the latest violence: eight in raids on the central province of Homs, four when a bus with oil workers was raked by gunfire and a man shot dead trying to cross the border into Turkey. The bloodshed came as International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) head Jakob Kellenberger ended a visit to Syria, where rights groups say 10,000 people have been arrested since anti-regime protests erupted in mid-March. A senior Arab League official, meanwhile, said secretary general Nabil al-Arabi will visit Damascus tomorrow carrying an Arab peace initiative for unrest-swept Syria. The ICRC said Kellenberger met President Bashar al-Assad before winding up his visit and announced that Red Cross delegates visited Damascus central prison in Adra suburb on Sunday. "Initially, we will have access to persons detained by the ministry of the interior, and we are hopeful that we will soon be able to visit all detainees," Kellenberger said in a statement. "This is an important step forward for our humanitarian activities in Syria," he said. — AFP

Falling marriage rates hurting kids THE well-being of Australia's children and young adults has declined sharply in the past decade and sliding marriage rates are partly to blame, a study has found, reports The Age. Spiralling rates of child abuse and neglect, of children being placed in foster care and of teenage mental health problems, including a dramatic rise in hospitalisation for self-harm, are rooted in the rise of oneparent families and de facto couples, violent or unstable relationships and divorce, the report said. ''Governments in Australia cannot continue to ignore the reality that two parents tend to provide better outcomes for children than one, and that the most stable, safe and nurturing environment for children is when their parents are, and remain, married to one another,'' the report added. About 25 per cent of children born between 1981-85 had either been born to a single mother or experienced parental separation by the age of 15, nearly three times the rate of the post-war baby boomers, the study reported.
Man jailed for 'disgusting' library act A NEW ZEALAND man who indecently assaulted a total stranger in a library by pressing his face against her buttocks was jailed yesterday for two years and three months for his behaviour. Philip Broughton, 50, indecently assaulted the woman in the parenting section of the public library in New Brighton, a suburb in the South Island city of Christchurch, The Press reported. Broughton, who has a long history of indecent behaviour and drunk driving, denied the incident happened and claimed he had been in the library "looking for books of scientific interest".
Drunk hits highway in wheelchair AN 84-year-old man, visibly under the influence of alcohol, was arrested in Norway after driving the wrong way down a highway in his electric wheelchair. The man took to the road near his home recently in the southern Norwegian town of Porsgrunn, police said. He passed through a 184-metre tunnel then turned around and took the same tunnel again before being stopped by two motorists, reports The Australian. They called traffic police, who confiscated the man's driver's licence on the spot and took a blood test.

Reaction remembered
THE moment, captured on television, is frozen in history — the shock on George Bush's face as he learns that a second aircraft has crashed into the World Trade Centre. Bush's reaction as Andy Card, his chief of staff, whispers the news into his ear that America is under attack, has become an indelible memory for many. Yet, most who were there and witnessed the drama first-hand were children — seven- and eight-yearolds at a Florida primary school — who were reading the president a story about a goat as the audacious act of terrorism happened in New York. "I'm still clear in my head about what happened," said La'Damien Smith, now an 18-year-old high-school student, who was one of 16 pupils chosen to be in the classroom of Sarasota's Emma E Booker elementary school that morning, reports The Guardian. "We were sat in the class. I remember looking up for a second and I could see the guy leaning over him, talking to him. The president had this shocked expression on his face. From that point on I was wondering what was wrong." What Bush did next was
one of the most controversial decisions of his presidency. He sat at the front of the class for seven minutes listening as the teacher, Sandra Kay Daniels, led the children through their rendition of My Pet Goat, his expression difficult to read as the lesson continued before him. When the reading concluded, Bush praised the class for their reading skills, then moved to the school's media centre next door. He took a phone call and gave a short news conference before being hustled to the airport and the safety of the skies aboard Air Force One. Later, there were calls by critics for Bush to be impeached for sitting and doing nothing for so long, having already been advised that the US was being attacked on a scale never seen before. But the children who were there remain convinced that Bush made the right decision. "He did the best he could," said Chantal Guerrero, 17, now a student at the Sarasota military academy. "For me, it was right. If he had left straight away and freaked out, that would have been the mindset he would have left for America. If he wanted the country to be

calm he needed to stay calm. I'm not sure how much he would have been able to do in the seven minutes or so that it took." Smith agrees with his former classmate. "I would have done the same. I wouldn't want these little kids, who were reading to me, to get all hyped up and go crazy about what had happened. Now I understand why he did that so everything was still calm, why he didn't jump up and leave straight away. "It was nice that he understood we were young kids and would probably have gone crazy if he had told us what had happened."

Brits 'more prejudiced against minorities' after riots
THE riots and looting that began in London and spread to other cities in England early last month have left people feeling more fearful and more concerned that "British society" is under threat, according to an academic study. The research released yesterday examined public attitudes before and immediately after the disturbances and found the four nights of violence and looting had a marked impact on people across the UK and led to a rise in prejudice towards minority groups, reports The Guardian. "Our findings suggest citizens feel more threatened, more fearful of increasing violence and vandal-

ism in their neighbourhood after the disturbances than before," said co-author Matthew Goodwin, from Nottingham University. "It also found people were more likely to feel that British culture and society were under threat following the riots." The findings are based on polling carried out by YouGov at the beginning of July, when 1,000 people were sampled, and again the week after the riots, when 2,000 people were sampled. Researchers asked identical questions about a range of issues exploring respondents' social and economic profile, their attitudes and voting intentions. "Although people did not associ-
ate the riots with specific minority groups, they were more prejudiced in their aftermath," said Goodwin. "Those who felt afterwards that their security was under greater threat were more likely to express hostile attitudes toward Muslims. "Meanwhile, those who felt afterwards that wider British society and culture were under greater threat were more likely to express hostility toward Muslims and also black and east European communities. "So, whereas the riots were not associated in the public mindset with particular minority groups, our findings suggest they have nonetheless increased prejudice in British society."
theories surrounding the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon which took place a decade ago on Sunday. Peter Rosengard, chairman of the "9/11 London project", said research in British schools last year revealed "the most incredible ignorance, confusion and misunderstanding" of the attacks. "Children have to see something to understand it wasn't a videogame, it really happened, it could have been their mums, their dads among the nearly 3,000 dead," he said. — AFP
Study to examine cause of unrest THE causes and consequences of the English riots last month, the most serious bout of civil unrest in a generation, will be examined in a study by The Guardian and the London School of Economics. Researchers will interview hundreds of people who were involved, in the first empirical study into the widespread rioting and looting, reports The Guardian. As well as surveys of those who took part in the disorder, the research will include interviews with residents, police and the judiciary, and an advanced analysis of more than 2.5 million riotrelated Twitter messages. The study Reading the Riots is supported by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Open Society Foundations.

Death of anonymity Real name demand on social networking sites may be money-minded
GOOGLE and Facebook are trying to remove anonymity from the web by forcing people to sign up using their real names and banning people who use pseudonyms. But commentators argue Internet companies aren't demanding real names to make the web a more civilised place, as the net giants say, but to exploit our information and mouse clicks for more money. In the past, Facebook has been known to ban people who use unconventional names
such as Australian Elmo Keep and, separately, US citizen Mark Zuckerberg, who has the same name as the social networking site's CEO. Now, Google is doing the same with its rival to Facebook, Google+, reports The Age. The former marketing director of Facebook, and sister of co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, believes anonymity on the web "has to go away". And Google's chairman and former CEO, Eric Schmidt, argues anonymity on the Internet is "dangerous" and
the Google+ social network is an "identity service" allowing people to know if you are a "real person as opposed to a dog, or a fake person, or a spammer". He says governments the world over may eventually put an end to anonymity online. Mark Pesce, a futurist and judge for the ABC's New Inventors programme, believes companies like Google and Facebook wanting your real name is all about power and money. "It's the powerful forcing
the less powerful to do as they say," he said. "And I don't think it will work because I think the only thing it's going to do is create more value for the pseudonymous base. "So, Google clearly wants to be a reputation broker. And they think that reputation is based around your real name and it is not. It is constructed around the set of social interactions that happen. So, they fundamentally misunderstand what's going on there or they're wilfully misunderstanding it. I don't know which."

Thousands flock to see Kate's frock
CROWDS are flocking to Buckingham Palace to see the dress worn by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding to Prince William. As the Queen takes her annual holiday, the display she described partly as "horrid", has already been visited by more than 354,000 people, the palace has revealed. For an entry fee of A$26.85 (RM84) visitors get a close-up glimpse at the Sarah Burton-designed silk gown worn by Catherine on April 29 for her world-famous nuptials, reports The Age. The tiny-waisted gown is fitted to a headless dummy, which the Queen was heard by nearby media to describe as "horrid, isn't it? Horrible", prior to the July 23 opening. Suspended above the dress is the Queen's Cartier tiara, loaned to Catherine for her big day, while nearby the bride's shoes and earrings are also on display. In a neighbouring room sits the eight-tiered wedding cake in a glass case. The palace anticipates another 500,000 visitors will pass through the gates before the opening ends on Oct 3.
Pesce says social networking companies like Google needed real names to make transactions legally binding. "A pseudonym doesn't make them money even though your reputation may be based on your pseudonym and not on your real name." He added real names conferred a lot of power. "And Google wants to be the arbiter and broker of that power so that they can be the gatekeeper on all the commerce that happens through it."
Adele still battles stage fright
HORRID? The dress on display at Buckingham Palace
ADELE'S second album 21 is set to become of the bestselling and most acclaimed of this year, and she's moved audiences to tears with soul-searing renditions of songs like Someone Like You, but the British soul superstar still battles major stage fright. "I puke quite a lot before going on stage," Adele, 22, tells British Vogue in its October issue — gracing its cover (pic) with a stunning closeup shot. "Though never actually on stage," the Grammy winner clarifies. But the pre-show puke guarantees a great performance, she said. One thing the curvy star doesn't get caught up in: Hollywood's obsession with diets and getting thing. "I've seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down," she tells Vogue. "And I don't want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me."
Partying prince to be ticked off PRINCE Harry is to receive a right royal dressing down from military superiors for his latest round of wild party antics, a British newspaper reports. London tabloids have been filled with photos of the 26-year-old third in line to the throne, taken during a recent holiday to Croatia. The shots show the playboy prince dancing, drinking shots, dive-bombing in a pool and chatting up women at a club in Hvar, with the partying lasting until dawn. "There will be words. This is custom-
ary when a (army) captain's behaviour raises eyebrows," a royal aide told Britain's Daily Star newspaper. "In a few weeks, he will go to a base in Arizona as part of his training with the elite of the elite. "He has to remember who he is and what his job is and learn how to behave. "The prince was on leave but this behaviour demonstrates that there is a question over his judgment. "Harry knows he is going to be photographed and has to use a bit of common sense."

Angelina Jolie's desert dreams ACTRESS Angelina Jolie (pic) loves the movie Lawrence Of Arabia and says it her dream to cross the Sahara desert. The 35-year-old star said she loves the film because of its setting and it is a long-held ambition of hers to trek the north African region. "I love Lawrence Of Arabia because I love the desert, reports MidDay. "I've spent a lot of time in the Middle East and crossing the Sahara is a dream of mine," said Jolie. "There's a famous quote: If it doesn't scare you, it's not worth doing. I think there's a truth to that. I love being at home with my kids. I love simple things and I wonder why I can't just enjoy them and live that kind of life. But I wouldn't be happy and I wouldn't feel my life is of much worth."
Madonna waxes nostalgic about exes PROMOTING her second effort as a film director of the film W.E. at the Venice Film Festival, Madonna, 53, acknowledged her famous exes. "I am and was attracted to very creative people which is why I married Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, two very talented directors," the singer said at a Press conference, reports Us Magazine. "They both encouraged me as a director and as a creative person to do what I did, and they were both very supportive." Back in 1989, Madonna divorced Penn, now 51, after four years of marriage. She and Ritchie, now 42, divorced in 2008 after eight years together; they have a son, 11-year-old Rocco. These days, she keeps company with boyfriend Brahim Zaibat, a 24 year-old French breakdancer.

I'll probably shop for clothes for myself once a year, and that will last me for the rest of the year. What was it that Prince said: 'Money can't buy you happiness but it can help pay for the pursuit?" contactmusic.com quoted the 30-year-old as saying. "It's nice to have places in Los Angeles and New York. I spend enough time in both that it's nice to have a home. But I don't need them."

Heroes are zer 'Sepi's leading man says he would rather be a bad
By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my
twitter @klubbkiddkl TONY EUSOFF wants to be bad. For a change. Instead of playing the good guy almost all of the time, Tony now eyes villainous characters. The reason? He does not want to look bad on screen. Huh?
“To be honest, hero roles suck. It’s hard to play a hero here. More often than not, scripts suck and they almost always end up cheesy, corny and predictable.” Obviously, hero scripts have nothing to do with Tony’s preference. Tony has not been in any feature film for three years now. He is not only pining for a return to the big screen, but also a juicy role as the antagonist. “I love to play baddies as they’re nice to play. The more the script sucks, the easier it is to play a baddie as you can go over the top and still remain plausible and believable.” But for Tony, Lady Luck hasn’t opened the door for a return to the big screen just yet. “I have not been approached for anything, and it’s sad as I would love to do more films after a lead role in 2008’s Sepi, following a guest role in Susuk.” More often than not, producers and directors rue the lack of leading men material, with only a handful becoming their favourites for a role. But Tony’s name rarely crops up despite having the goods to deliver. “I think it has a lot to do with the kind of films that are produced. I’m probably not seen as bankable. However, I have to admit that I haven’t approached anyone as none of the film genres rolling out today interest me anyway.” What he longs for, is “anything progressive, really”. Without being specific, he said he wished to do movies that challenged the norm of the usual formulaic materials. “I watched KL Gangster, and there was massive promise. I have new-found respect for Syamsul Yusof and I think he’s quite good,” said Tony, indicating his interest to work with the hotshot director.
I love to play baddies as they’re nice to play. The more the script sucks, the easier it is to play a baddie as you can go over the top and still remain plausible and believable. — Tony Eusoff Apart from the big screen, Tony misses the small screen too. For the moment, he is kept busy preparing for Enfinity Vision Media’s theatrical musical production of The Secret Life of Nora, after his recent meaty role as Curtis Taylor Jr in Dreamgirls: The Broadway Musical Sensation staged in KL recently. “I miss doing TV and the people behind it. roes guy to TV at the end of October. But I guess I can kiss film goodbye for the time being. I play Agent Farouk, the Malaysian liaison officer who receives the British intelligence agent to train Nora. “It’s a good role, and it’s close to the role played by Adibah Noor, who I am very comfortable working with,” he said of the production, which also stars Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina in the title role as well as Aznil Nawawi as the evil mastermind. Rehearsals commenced last week, immediately after completing Dreamgirls. Tony has had little time for much else since his involvement in Terima Kasih Cinta and Dreamgirls. “Theatre is progressing, and that’s good but it started emerging years too late. Istana Budaya was dormant for the longest time and it deserves the shows it is getting now. Theatre cannot be overexposed. We’re too far away to be overexposed.” And while many may gripe about how theatre is not a feasible alternative for its long schedules and small monetary pay-offs, Tony begs to differ. “From my personal experience, my theatre gigs have paid me better than shoots,” he said. “I think what’s happening now is that theatre producers have found a sound business model. I have heard Hans Isaac is the best producer post Cuci 2. “He excelled despite being fairly new to the role, and many who have worked with him have claimed they would work with him for free because of how well he has treated those who worked under him.” Meanwhile, Tony, or Anthony Joseph anak Hermas Rajiman, will continue to roll with the punches and take on whatever is thrown at him with panache.
HE might be visuallyimpared, but Taiwanese singer, Xiao Huang Chi is certainly not letting his "handicap" hinder his progress at achieving success. Like international superstar Stevie Wonder, Xiao was born blind due to a congenital cataract. And just like the legendary singer, Xiao is determined to let his singing take the world by storm, despite what the critics say. Xiao believes success comes to those who wait. And his musical journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. His recent performance at the Tiger Huang and Xiao Huang Chi Live in Genting 2011 concert proved that he is more than just an ordinary singer. Wearing an extraordinary and yet unbreakable spirit to perfect his craft has seen him awarded with praises as well as critical acclaim. At his recent stint at The Arena of Stars, Xiao revealed musical talent apart from singing. He surprised the audience by playing the saxophone. Sharing the stage that night was Tiger Huang, the Diva of Love Ballads, as she is called by her admirers. Her melodious voice was emotive and truly

mesmerising. Whenever she opened her mouth to sing, she did it with great passion. Both Huang and Xiao captured the crowds' heart without trying very hard. They simply did what they did best and their honesty shone through. Their onstage chemistry was obvious during the two-hour concert and the full-house attendance also confirmed both singers as among Asia's most popular performers.

TVB's 'Famous Five' ready to charm fans THE stage is set for the Be Charmed Live in Malaysia 2011 concert, which will be held at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands on Oct 8, and the stars have given their word that they would "bring the house down". Two of the performers from the chosen five TVB artistes, Kate Tsui and Michael Tse — better known as "Laughing Gor" — who were in Kuala Lumpur recently, promised fans "explosive nights" they would not forget. "This will be our first time doing a show together. The audience can expect to see something very different," said Tsui, a Hong Kong TVB actress. She said the promotional trip was also a casual "survey" of what fans in Malaysia would expect from the upcoming show. "Our mission is to ask local fans' opinions on what they would like to see that night. Ideas and suggestions are most welcome." Her "partner in crime", Tse is certainly not a stranger to Malaysia. He last came here
said she would not mind doing the pole dance with Tse. "I think people would really want to see him do the pole dance, " she laughed. Meanwhile, Tse who seems to have an afinity towards Malaysia, said he was trying to learn the local lingo as much as he could so that he would be able to communicate well with his fans here. "I have been to Malaysia many times. I want to learn to speak beyond "terima kasih" (thank you). Well, something like `have you eaten?'; or `you are so beautiful today', should please the fans!" he said with a laugh. There would be
a lot of choreographies. Then again, we're still planning the entire rundown. However, I can assure you it will be special," he said. As for Tsui, her training in dance would not go to waste as she will be dancing the night away too. Currently seen playing a

We have our limits when it comes to revealing ourselves in public. "However, as an artiste, I want to send out a message about `confidence, health and happiness'. I think the most important thing is to be healthy. You could still be sexy but in a healthy way,” the actress who is known for her girl-next-door image said. As part of the brand’s value, Sorella aims to instil confidence among women in Asia through Yeung’s modern and confident personality. “An undergarment to me is something very personal. Treat yourself better by choosing the right product or garment to pamper yourself.” Yeung said being the new ambassador for Sorella has been a challenge. It has been a huge step for her and her involvement with the brand has
made her more mature. "Sorella is a product I would recommend to everyone and not just to my female colleagues whom I feel safe and confident with." While work remains the most important commitment for the still-single actress, word has it that she has “pocketed” a fat cheque as the new ambassador, although Yeung was not too keen in revealing the figure. On her strategy to win this year’s TV Queen award at the annual TVB Anniversary Awards, Yeung said she would leave the matter in the hands of fate. “I have confidence in winning the TV Queen award this year,” she said. Last year, Yeung lost the title to reigning queen, Sheren Tang for her role in No Regrets. This year, Yeung's competitors, who are also her good friends, are Fala Chen and Linda Chung. “Confidence is something everyone must have. However, winning to me is not important. If I do, I will treat everyone to a
lavish dinner!” For more information on Sorella, visit www.sorella-lingerie.com or Facebook and search “Sorella Lingerie Malaysia.”

Unleash hell!
By JEREMY TAN lifestyle@mmail.com.my TO the daring among us, diagnosed with a penchant for horror, the all-new attraction at Sunway Lagoon’s Scream Park may just be the prescription to cure that need for thrills. Dubbed Horrorwood Studios,
this museum of scares features a slew of horrific monstrosities, all vividly realised in this bleak and highly stylised exhibition. Teeming with a live cast of grotesque and unnerving creatures, it’s dynamic 20minute journey hopes to marry entertainment with shrieks in an unholy union jittery enough to make Sunway Lagoon a refreshing return venture. Making familiarity a cause for fear, you will be subjected to classic horror characters from well-known scream flicks like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Aliens. “Horrorwood is the only place where we’ve gathered the darkest creatures and the greatest horrors from movies and bringing them
alive as a live presentation to you,” Sunway Lagoon chief executive officer Aaron Soo said at the project’s launch. In other words, you will bear witness to a well-designed Xenomorph effigy, jump at the sight of a chainsaw-wielding madman reminiscent of Jason Voorhees, or even the super creepy Billy from Saw. There’s even a self-contained “Zombie Apocalypse” inside, with live actors playing out their zombie roles in a mock abandoned facility. Since no horror exhibition can be complete without its own legion of zombies, this is a natural inclusion. Other attractions within Horrorwood Studios make use of 3D glasses to create a surreal visual effect, making poltergeists and the surroundings seem otherworldly. With several different types of horror themes divided by sections, each area ensures no monotone in the overall visual experience. The amount of visual expertise that was put into the attraction is of professional quality. The

museum and its interior are wellmade, and the make-up for the live cast is truly realistic. Add this with the audio and visual effects, and this attraction could frighten the lights out of anyone, and have great fun at the same time. “Sunway Lagoon is where you can feel the fear, have some fun, and it’s a great family attraction as well, even though you may get a little bit scared or jump,” said Sudden Impact! Entertainment Company chairman and chief executive officer Lynton V Harris, the mastermind behind Scream Park. Making the launch of Horrorwood Studios special was
a guest appearance by Kane Hodder, the actor who played Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th movie series. Hodder, 56, lent his acting talent during a short five-minute movie entitled Hutan Yang Seram played as part of the attraction. So, for those looking for a fright, now might be a good time to return to Scream Park, Sunway Lagoon, and let the screaming begin.

Futuristic page-turner By DARSHINI KANDASAMY darshini@mmail.com.my TITLE: The Fat Years AUTHOR: Chan Koonchung PUBLISHER: Doubleday RATING: 7/10 WHAT would you do if a whole month goes missing and no one remembers or seems to care. Suddenly, no one has anything to complain about. Chan’s The Fat Years is an interesting read. He takes hold of the current projection of China as the world’s greatest economy and molds it into the perfect platform for his book. Set sometime in the distant future, in a China that has long entered its “Golden Age of Ascendancy” and one
Overcoming challenges TITLE: Mao’s Last Dancer AUTHOR: Li Cunxin PUBLISHER: Penguin Books RATING: 8/10
that has even taken over Starbucks, The Fat Years infuses politics and history, with detective genre-style storytelling. Chan jumps from character to character, each taking turns to narrate his story, and in doing so, slowly puts the story together piece-by-piece. There are times, though when explanations on politics or economy become too longwinded and Chan appears to try too hard to remind readers the story is set in China. Still, damage is minimal and you will find yourself still guessing ahead, all the while compelled to keep turning the pages, to see if you’ve guessed right.
A MOVING tale of the quest for freedom and courage to live life according to one’s own dreams sums up Mao’s Last Dancer, an autobiography of Chinese ballet dancer Li Cunxin. The book recalls his childhood days in rural China up to his brush with international stardom as a world-class ballet dancer. Growing up in a poor peasant family during the height of China’s Cultural Revolution, Cunxin has no idea that his life is about to change when he is selected to study ballet in Beijing at the academy supported by Madame Mao. From loathing ballet to loving it with a passion, the book revolves around Cunxin as he sets out on a new path and follows
his dreams of being free to express his love for dance — amid struggles, sacrifices, love and triumphs. Written in a personal manner, Mao’s Last Dancer shows how one can overcome challenges in life and do what the heart desires. The reader gets a good picture of how life was like for those under the reign of Chairman Mao and cannot help but be inspired by Cunxin’s zest for life. —

A tale of one woman’s strength and struggles TITLE: Someone Else’s Garden AUTHOR: Dipika Rai PUBLISHER: Harper Press RATING: 7/10 SOMEONE ELSE’S GARDEN speaks volumes of truth about perceptions and adversity faced by many women across the world and, in particular,
India. Like many daughters in rural India, Mamta, the eldest of seven children born low-caste, is abused and rejected by a father who believes there is no reason to “water someone else’s garden” until she is married. Thinking she can escape the life after marriage,
Mamta begins her wedded life with hope — but is soon disillusioned and forced to leave her village, her abusive husband and quiet village to seek a better life in the city. Through hard work and lucky breaks, she is saved from becoming nameless and faceless in the bustling city but
struggles to find acceptance and make peace with her past. Provocative and very real, Rai’s powerful story of the strength of one woman determined to change her destiny despite her struggles proves to be an engaging and inspiring tale. — By ANU

Vino venture
THERE is a lot more to wine that what meets the palate. Think about wine and you will most probably have images of a cosy, fun time with family and friends. It is more than just about white wine or red, house pouring or well-established brands. Many wine drinkers like to order the more ‘’important” wines when dining at restaurants as opposed to the selection they may drink at home. If you have the capital and passion for wine, there is another venture one might consider — fine wine for investment. Vineyards Direct Malaysia is now offering Malaysians opportunities to invest in top class Australian wines. Australian wines have reportedly continued to offer investors steady and consistent returns above expectations. In recent years, funds specialising in Australian wines have gradually increased, giving double-digit annual returns. As fine wines are tangible assets, they appreciate in value when they are produced in small quantities, that is, less than two per cent of total annual wine that is produced globally. Markets for these highly sought-after wines are huge and growing rapidly thanks to demand from Asian countries. Also, the demand for fine wines in Asia has exploded in the past five years, putting more pressure on the already-small amount of wines that can be produced. With a penchant for fine wine investment and bringing wine lovers together, Vineyards Direct Malaysia recently hosted a wine tasting event at the Servcorp Virtual Office located at Menara Citibank in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. This time around, they brought wine expert, renowned Australian winemaker Dean Hewitson to local shores. Founded in 1998 by chief
fermentation and maturation to preserve its terroir or unique character. Having cut his winemaking teeth at Petaluma under the influence of its founder Brian Croser, he released the first of his Hewitson wines in 1998, exploring some of South Australia’s vineyards like the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills to establish and grow his brand. Since then, the label has attracted and captivated an audience honed on true expressions of regional terrior. Guests at the event were treated to three of Hewitson’s latest releases — the 2009 ‘Old Garden Mourvedre Barossa Valley’, the 2009 ‘Private Cellar Shiraz Mourvedre Barrosa Valley’ wines and the 2009 ‘The Mad Hatter Shiraz Mclaren Vale’ as well as canapés. The wine tasting event was the company’s second wine tasting lined up for the year with many more to come. Vineyards Direct hopes to bring more wine experts,
renowned wine makers and owners to Malaysia.

winemaker and CEO Hewitson is dedicated to producing traditionally-made, expressive wines from vineyards of South Australia. As one of the few Australian wine producers who have successfully blended tradition with innovation, Hewitson’s Mourvedre wines are ‘one of Australia’s greatest reds’. “Hewitson wines are just one of many under our fine wine investment offerings. We are delighted to be able to provide wine enthusiasts in Malaysia the opportunity to meet and greet the makers of some of their favorite wines and to offer them an option to invest in those wines at the same time,” said David Spencer, operations director of Vineyards Direct Malaysia. Hewitt’s passion for wine is evident in the way he described the process of making wine. All red wines finish fermentation in French oak barrels speciallymade and imported. Each vineyard is specifically kept separate throughout

KUALA LUMPUR: BADMINTON
Bidding time
James awaiting CNT meeting to decide on future MANY are eager to see the outcome of the BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training (CNT) committee meeting scheduled on Thursday. This is especially after top national doubles pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong had requested to train under Pang Cheh Chang instead of Rexy Mainaky. High performance director Datuk James Selvaraj is also interested to see the end result of the meeting which would enable him to gauge his future with the national set-up. Last Thursday was James' oneyear stint with BAM but he did not celebrate. His body language and intonation said it all.
By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my
Decisions had been made in the past without his knowledge. The fiasco involving Kien KeatBoon Heong is leaving him even more frustrated. Major dailies reported Cheh Chang was ready to guide Kien Keat-Boon Heong. Rexy had apparently given Cheh Chang his blessings. But it is clear James is dumbfounded as it is he and the CNT committee who are supposed to decide on such matters — not the players or the coaches themselves. His future in BAM remains
unclear as the national body is looking for a full-time high performance director. James is still an employee of Bata and his contract expires in December. It remains unclear if James will continue to serve Bata or opt to come into BAM fulltime if he is given the chance to do so. James, who attended the KLRC Hari Raya open house over the weekend, chose his words wisely when asked to comment about his future with BAM. "I'm here as a guest and I'm here to enjoy the food. I don't want to comment much about my future with BAM except that I believe I can do more for the
national body," he said. "A meeting will be held on Thursday and we will see the outcome." James was a decorated player in the 1970s. He netted the 1977 KL Sea Games bronze medal, was runner-up in the 1976 Thomas Cup in Bangkok and won the 1978 Commonwealth Games bronze medal in Edmonton. It will surely be interesting to see if James' vast experience on the courts will finally be shared with the current set of shuttlers in the national stable. Otherwise, James might just call it quits and concentrate on his career with Bata.
The duo are looking forward to qualifying for the London Olympics next year and do
not want their efforts to be in vain. BAM were represented by secretary Ng Chin Chai and general manager Kenny Goh. However, Rajasingam also said selection to represent the country is the discretion of the association, unless there is an element of injustice. "All associations have prerogative powers in selecting athletes. They have personnel to assess the candidates," he said. This will not come as good news to athletes who can only bring the matter up once they have been left out. It could be too late by then, just like in Teik Chai-Bin Shen's case.
No middle path for doubles pair
INDEPENDENT doubles pair Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen's hopes of finding resolve and moving on from their dispute with the BA of Malaysia (BAM) will have to wait. Both parties failed to find amicable solutions over two undisclosed issues when the Olympic Council of Malaysia (O CM) played mediator at Wisma OCM yesterday. "The mediation process is strictly private and confidential," said OCM Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) committee chairman Datuk Roy Rajasingam (pic). He refused to divulge any information on the matter but
By VIJHAY VICK vijhay@mmail.com.my
added both parties wanted time to reconsider the outstanding issues before coming to a settlement. The parties will meet again on Sept 13. It is learnt that Teik Chai-Bin Shen have four issues to settle. The saga was triggered when BAM dropped the pair in favour of lower ranked Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thien How from the World Championships in London last month. Teik Chai-Bin Shen are looking for clarification on the selection criteria to represent Malaysia in major meets.

Malaysia's lowly target at youth meet
MALAYSIA have set a low target for the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man starting tomorrow till Tuesday. However, chef de mission R osmanizan Ab du l l a h and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) general secretary Sieh Kok Chi both agree that there is no reason for alarms bells to ring. "The Games is generally not taken seriously as there are very few sports being contested," said Kok Chi. "The main aim for us is to expose our youngsters. Besides, the role to develop youngsters should be left to the schools." He said at school level there are already many competitions for youngsters to develop and it is here that countries shortlist athletes for the national programmes. Malaysia have set a threegold medal target, similar to the

achievement in India four years ago. The best achievement was when the Malaysians took home six gold medals in Australia in 2004. Only seven sports will be contested this time with Malaysia participating in badminton, cycling, aquatics and athletics. Of the four,
badminton and cycling would be the best bets for success. Malaysia will be sending 18 athletes, with badminton having the biggest representative. Names likes Ian James Barr and Christina Loh have been left out from swimming. Rosmanizan admitted he want-
ed the duo to compete to enhance the country's chances of winning more medals but the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia decided against it. "I can't say much about this. They probably already have training programmes they need to adhere to," he said.

If we can match them up front and get some quick ball for our backs, then we have got quality behind the scrum to hopefully do a bit of damage — Wales prop Paul James on their match against South Africa

Typhoon Habana Ace winger vows to shine for champions Springboks
SOUTH AFRICA'S speedy winger Bryan Habana has set his sights on finally eclipsing Joost van der Westhuizen as Springboks' most prolific try scorer. Habana, 28, pulled level with the legendary scrumhalf with his 38th Test try against Italy in June last year but has since drawn a blank in 10 successive international appearances. At the 2007 Rugby World Cup, he played in all seven games as South Africa bulldozed their way to glory and in doing so, contributed eight tries to equal All Black Jonah Lomu's record haul for a single tournament. Habana is now hoping a return to the World Cup stage will trigger a return to top form, starting with their highprofile Pool D opener against Wales on Sunday. "I'd like to hope so. I thought it would have happened a while ago. If I do get chosen to play, I would love to make a positive contribution to the start of our campaign," he said. If his 10-Test drought and the Springboks' disappointing Tri-Nations campaign were not reason enough to be feeling the pressure as his side

prepare to kick off the defence of their title, then there is also the weight of the nation. "We had a send-off in South Africa where 65,000 people said goodbye to us," said Habana, one of 18 survivors from the 2007 squad. "When you get greeted by the President (Jacob Zuma) and he tells you to bring the cup back — he expects you to bring the cup back. The nation is saying, 'Good luck but don't come home empty-handed'." It is against such a backdrop of expectancy that South Africa will encounter a Wales side not short on confidence following their impressive World Cup warm-up series last month. Although history heavily favours the Springboks — they have suffered a solitary defeat in 25 Tests against
Wales since 1906, the last three encounters were won by a combined margin of just 12 points. And with Samoa and Fiji — familiar World Cup opponents for South Africa — also in the Springboks' pool, there will be little respite in the race for a place in the last eight. "Playing Wales is a great challenge for first up. The Welsh are one of the most passionate and fiery sides in world rugby, and they bring a good challenge to the table," said Habana. "Everything since the New Zealand game (in the Tri Nations) has been focused on Wales. They are a tough unit. And I am not sure why we always get drawn with the
Pacific islanders in a World Cup, but it's a great challenge. They are great rugby-playing nations. "In Marseille in 2007, at 20-20 (against quarterfinal opponents Fiji), it actually felt like we were playing in Fiji. So the smaller teams always get quite a bit of support, especially in New Zealand." What the World Cup can expect from the South Africans has been widely chronicled — traditional power up front and a relentless kicking game built around their halfbacks Morne Steyn and Fourie du Preez. It is a simple but often effective approach, and one that Habana admits is unlikely to deviate from a tried-andtested routine.

Amirul Hadi wants Malaysia Cup badly
SELANGOR ace Amirul Hadi Zainal and coach K. Devan share one thing in common — the desire to win the Malaysia Cup. Amirul Hadi, 25, has seen much success over the past couple of years, especially with the national team. Devan, on the other hand, made sure Selangor had an impressive outing last season, bagging the FA Cup and Super League trophies. While the Red Giants have won the Malaysia Cup 32 times, with their last success in 2005, Devan and Amirul Hadi have yet to taste glory in the competition. Amirul Hadi started playing for the senior squad in 2006 after graduating from the President's Cup Team. Nevertheless, the Malacca-born lad believes it is high time for Selangor to win the Malaysia Cup, especially after failing to defend the FA Cup and Super League this season. Selangor are in Group D together with Kuala Lumpur, T-Team and Police. They will play T-Team in the curtain raiser at Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium tonight. "It’s not so much about the group stage but what happens beyond it. We’ve seen it happening before and we pray it doesn’t happen again this year," said
By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my
Amirul Hadi. "I’m confident we will be able to top Group D. We just hope the team will be well oiled in the critical stages." He stressed while Selangor enjoyed a string of friendly matches during the fasting month, the team are not at their best. Among the results chalked during the matches last month were a slim 1-0 win over the national team followed by a 1-0 defeat by Kelantan. "There is still room for improvement. There are no serious injuries and I expect the team to be at their best when the tournament begins." Selangor are hungry to win their 33rd title and even launched their Mission 33 campaign in a bid to motivate the players to win the cup. They also have three loan players on board — USM goalkeeper G. Jeevanathan and Harimau Muda A strikers Nazri Ahmad and Haziq Zikri Elias. However, Amirul Hadi admitted playing T-Team away is not going to be easy and the Terengganu club cannot be taken lightly. "It’s a team effort, so every one of us will need to give our best. It’s always good to be on your toes. Not only will the team

SUBANG JAYA: rugby/ Borneo 7s
Thrilling rugby 7s on show in Sabah SABAH will be the place to be later this month for rugby lovers. The ‘Land of Rugby’, as dubbed by Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, will once again play host to some of the region’s best teams in the Borneo 7s at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Sept 23-25. The Borneo 7s will see teams such as defending champions Hong Kong, Asian Games champions Japan, South Korea and China compete for the Asian Rugby 7s Series and Asia Pacific Women’s 7s trophies. The Asian 7s Series makes debut at the tournament. "It will surely be a keenly contested tournament. With points up for grabs, teams will go all out," said Sabah Rugby Union (SBU) president Velayuthan Tan. The tournament is the last of two events in the Asian circuit that offer points towards qualification for the World Cup 7s Series in Hong Kong in March. Hong Kong and last year's winners Japan are expected to take top honours. Malaysia, who placed fifth last year, are confident of improving their standings and performance this time around. Malaysia turned in a creditable performance at the Shanghai 7s last month,

reaching the Plate finals where they eventually lost to hosts China. Velayuthan said efforts are being taken to enhance the sport in Sabah. "It has been 10 years since the sport was introduced in the State and it is still growing. Hopefully the next five years can be even better."

Williams stakes her claim
American dominates Ivanovic to advance into last eight SERENA WILLIAMS reinforced her position as the over w helming favourite for US Open glory with an imposing 6-3, 6-4 win over Ana Ivanovic to reach the quarterfinals. Ivanovic's form has been much improved since linking up with coach Nigel Sears and she made excellent progress to the fourth round. But she failed to get to grips with the blustery conditions, her normally reliable forehand misfired, and she was no match for the event favourite. Williams made a positive start with a strong service hold, but the blustery conditions were a real concern for both players and Ivanovic, who has always had issues with her ball toss, surrendered her opening service game. The contest threatened to get away from Ivanovic as Williams held for 3-0 with a booming ace, but the Serbian found her range and got on the board in the fourth game. Ivanovic's movement started to improve and relishing the power offered up by Williams, she broke back to bring the contest back on serve at 3-3. Williams saved a break point in the seventh game and, as is so often the case when she comes under pressure, the three-time champion turned the tables on Ivanovic. Ivanovic was put under the microscope by some impres-
sive hitting from her opponent and her serve failed to stand up, as two double faults handed the break and Williams closed out the set in impressive fashion. Ivanovic surrendered her serve in the opening game of the second set and it proved crucial as she failed to make any inroads on the Williams serve as the No. 28 seed progressed to a quarterfinal clash with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who edged out Francesca Schiavone.
In a contest low in quality but high in drama, Pavlyuchenkova took out Schiavone 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in a match between the youngest and oldest players left in the women's draw. Schiavone has not been at her best in New York, she had to save a match point against Chanelle Scheepers, and her luck ran out against Pavlyuchenkova. The No 17 seed looked frail herself and squandered two match points in timid fashion, but she got the job done
JANKO TIPSAREVIC reached the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career at the US Open after beating Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 to progress to the last eight at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The 27-year-old bespectacled Serb, who had won just three matches in his previous seven visits to Flushing Meadows, edged a tight first set but Ferrero managed to hit back in the second despite struggling with a foot problem which required plenty of strapping. Tipsarevic broke serve in the 12th game, when Ferrero hit a backhand into the net that wrapped up the 59-min-
ute first set. Ferrero failed to convert two break point opportunities in the second set, which was decided on a tie-break, before raising his game to lead 6-2 in the tie-break and clinch the set in 68 minutes when Tipsarevic hit a return long. However, Tipsarevic managed to break Ferrero in the 11th game before closing out to love with a 124 miles per hour ace. Ferrero's resistance ended at 1-2, when he was broken to 15. Tipsarevic grew in confidence and broke a second time, to love, for a 4-1 lead. Minutes later, he wrapped up his 39th win of a career-best
year with his 20th ace. He hit 54 winners overall and converted four of 10 break point opportunities for victory in three hours and 43 minutes. He will next face fellow Serb and world No 1 Novak Djokovic. Ferrero, who lost to Andy Roddick in the final eight years ago, won 25 per cent of points on return of serve. He committed 39 unforced e r ror s , on e m ore t h an Tipsarevic, and hit eight double faults. The former world No 1, now aged 31, was playing his first major championship of the season, following time off to recover from left knee and right wrist surgeries.
Results Men's singles fourth round Janko Tipsarevic (SER) beat Juan Carlos Ferrero (SPA) 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, Novak Djokovic (SER) beat Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR) 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 Women's singles fourth round Serena Williams (USA) beat Ana Ivanovic (SER) 6-3, 6-4, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ( RU S ) b e a t Fr a n c e s c a Schiavone (ITA) 5-7, 6-3, 6-4

with a crunching forehand down the line at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Pavlyuchenkova prevailed in two hours, 41 minutes but the sloppy match featured 16 service breaks and 21 double faults, including 11 by the victor. "I tried not to let her play her game, because she's very smart and she makes me run a lot," Pavlyuchenkova said after toppling Schiavone. "But it made me stronger I think. I never try to find
excuses when I lose so I always blame myself. It was actually a bit easier here because it was a different situation. "This time I won the second set... emotionally I felt better and I felt like I could win the third set." The Russian slugger will now appear in her first ever US Open quarterfinal. "I think Anastasia is a good player. She played good," said Schiavone. "Of course I am disappointed."

Djokovic sets up all-Serbian quarterfinal NOVAK DJOKOVIC came through a stunning first set tie-break to beat Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov and secure a place in the US Open quarterfinals. Djokovic saved four set points in the tie-break and needed six of his own on his way to a 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. The Serbian world No 1 will next face compatriot Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-7, 6-5, 6-2. Djokovic racked up his 61st win in 63 matches this year but it was not without alarms for the top seed, as Dolgopolov's unorthodox game caused him problems. On a windy afternoon at Louis Armstrong Stadium, the 22nd seed kept Djokovic pinned back with his sliced backhand and, after the pair swapped breaks of serve, the first set went to a tie-break. Dolgopolov was in total control at 4-0 up but then got unlucky with a net cord, and Djokovic came racing back. Each man would have their opportunities as the crowd reached fever pitch, with Dolgopolov playing one incredible point to see off a set point by picking up a drop shot that seemed impossible, but in the end Djokovic converted his sixth break point and never looked back. He broke at the start of the second and third sets to see out a straight-sets win that had been anything but straightforward for the first 75 minutes. "It was very tricky conditions," Djokovic said in his on-court interview. "He was playing a lot of low balls, a lot of slice. I was confused on the court. But it was really exciting. Djokovic is now preparing himself for the all-Serbian quarterfinal against Tipsarevic. It's the first time in the 43 years of the Open era that two Serbs have reached the quarters of a Grand Slam. "We are great friends," Djokovic said. "This is the first time we have played in a Grand Slam. There's going to be one Serbian in the semifinals, which is great for our country. "It's not going to be easy playing him, but it's the quarterfinals and somebody has to win."

City to investigate 'cancer email'
MANCHESTER CIT Y confirmed this morning they are to hold a 'board lead review' into allegations that their top executive sent an email to their star Nedum Onuoha's mother ridiculing her cancer. The Sun reported yesterday that Dr Anthonia Onuoha, who is the defender's agent as well as his mum, received an email from the account of City chief executive Garry Cook joking about her severe cancer. "Following allegations made to the football club by Dr Anthonia Onuoha, subsequently reported in today’s media, the club can confirm that a board-led review has been launched into the matter," read a City statement. Cook denied sending the email, which appeared to be intended for Brian Marwood but was instead sent to Dr Onuoha. Cook claimed that he was on holiday in South Africa at the time the message was sent, and that it came from a staff member at the club who hacked his account as a practical joke. An internal investigation is under way. Dr Onuoha had originally emailed Marwood, with Cook copied in, about a contractual dispute between her son and the club, reading at one point: "My body might be ravaged by cancer and ongoing chemotherapy but, thankfully, my intellectual and mental capacities remain fully functional. I fail to see where any of the explanations you have offered justified the exclusion of any aspects of Nedum's Manchester City's contracted terms and conditions." The reply to Dr Onuoha, which came from Cook's email address, started off greeting Marwood, and read: "Brian, Ravaged with it!!....... I don't know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at Nike." Regardless of who wrote the message the player's mother was not very happy, and she has written to the FA demanding action. "When I opened up my emails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer," she told The Sun. "I couldn't understand how anybody could behave like that. I just cried and cried for hours."

Dreamy Aaron Wales captain Ramsey aims to stun England at Wembley
ARSENAL midfielder Aaron Ramsey believes he will be living every young Welsh boy's dream when he leads Wales out against England at Wembley in a Group G match tomorrow (2.45am). Ramsey will captain his country against the Three Lions — thus fulfilling a lifelong ambition. But the 20-year-old will not be satisfied with the honour of wearing the armband as he is desperate to become the first man to captain Wales to victory at Wembley for 34 years. "This is what every young boy dreams about and to captain my country in this situation is going to be a big honour for me," said Ramsey. "It's a derby game and everyone's looking forward to it. We have to control our emotions a bit. "But I think we all know what our responsibilities are on the pitch and hopefully we can start the game a lot better than we did last time

Wales never recovered from falling 2-0 behind inside the opening 15 minutes. "We didn't start too cleverly. I think we've come on since then and we showed that in the last game in the way that we played and the way that we attacked," said Ramsey. been another disappointing qualifying campaign. Wales won 2-1. "We have to start producing against bigger oppositions and we did that on Friday," said Ramsey, who scored the decisive goal at Cardiff City Stadium. "This will be another massive game for us and hopefully we can take in what we learned from the last game and believe that we can get something out of the game." Ramsey admitted tomorrow's match was one of the biggest of his fledgling career. "It's up there," he said, admitting a shock win would

"There's no question that they have great players playing for them, players who are in great form at the moment, and we're going to have to be alert to that and switch on and all do our jobs correctly," he said. Ramsey was part of the side who failed to stop England stars Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young running riot in Manchester United's 8-2 victory over Arsenal recently. "They're in great form at the moment and their confidence is sky high after the last few results that they've had," he said.

Now it's iPad furore for Balotelli
MANCHESTER CITY'S controversial striker Mario Balotelli has reacted to concerns over his attitude during Italy's 1-0 Euro 2012 qualification win over Faroe Islands in a Group C match last Friday. Italy struggled to impress against the European minnows after Antonio Cassano's early opener and coach Cesare Prandelli made the decision to bring on Balotelli shortly after the interval. However, the coach was not too impressed with Balotelli's attitude on the bench as the attacker paid more attention to his iPad before kick-off. Balotelli came off the bench in the 85th minute to replace Cassano after an uninspired warm-up. Reports yesterday suggested he could be dropped for the Slovenia match tomorrow in Florence (2.45am) following his antics, but Balotelli has since responded, defending his use of technology before the match. "I only had the iPad during the warmup, I did not take it with me on the

bench," he told La Repubblica. Italy team manager Gigi Riva also tried to bury any doubts over the 21-year-old striker as he tries to ease tension. "The Balotelli incident is just part of many small things that happen in any team. There is nothing to worry about," said the former international. "He played five minutes on Friday and so he could not have done any more. Balotelli always does his best in train-
ing and the coach often heaps praise on him. "Let us not create a problem for Balotelli." The Italians can seal their place in Poland and Ukraine next year if they beat Slovenia. However, Prandelli expects a tough test against Slovenia, but believes his players can pass it with determination. "It will be a tricky game for us as Slovenia will be playing their last chance to stay close to having any chances of qualifying," he said. "They have players who have excellent technical qualities and they will create several opportunities. But, we have to react with order and fluidity." Speaking of Balotelli, he said: "I have patience for Balotelli, but it all depends on him. "He understands that sometimes his actions can be viewed in different ways, but to be honest he did nothing wrong by using his iPad, everyone listens to music."

New hero relishes being a Devil
MIDFIELDER Tom Cleverley insists he is taking his rise into the Manchester United first team in his stride. The 22-yearold has burst onto the scene at Old Trafford this season following loan spells at Leicester, Watford and Wigan. Many predicted Cleverley could emerge at some point this season, and after an excellent display in the Community Shield he has since started all three of the Red Devils' league games. "Getting into the team has always been my target and I've done that now. Maybe it's happened a little bit more quickly than some people expected, but I have to carry on working hard now if I want to stay in the team," Cleverley told his club's website. "I understand there'll be squad rotation, but I want to play as many games as possible. I feel I improved during this pre-season, I'm still the same player and I'm still the same guy. Just because I'm

Changing playing styles can bring down Barca, says Platini UEFA president Michel Platini believes trying to copy Barcelona is difficult and feels the only way to beat them is by changing styles of play. Josep 'Pep' Guardiola's men appear unstoppable after winning the Primera Liga, the Champions League, the European Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup in the space of just a few months. And the former France and Juventus midfielder offered his thoughts on how to break Barca's dominance over Spanish and European football. "It's difficult to emulate Barca's brand of football," Platini told Sky Sport Italia. "I think their way of playing can only be surpassed if other teams adopt different styles." Speaking of the Italian game and its decline in Europe after losing a Champions League place to Germany from this season, Platini said: "I don't think Italian football is struggling. "I recently handed the Champions League trophy to AC Milan (in 2007) and Inter Milan (in 2010)."
Meanwhile, England coach Fabio Capello believes that it would not be long before clubs find an answer to Barca's style of play. The Catalans are considered by many to be one of the best teams ever, but Capello feels their domination is not everlasting. "Can I see anyone stopping Barca in the near future? I think so. It will be possible, because we are lucky now that we can study opponents," Capello told Fifa's website. "You can find a solution to stop Barca, by understanding their strengths. You can study a lot, looking at tapes. Some team will find the solution to beat Barca. "Also, when you win a lot, sometimes you lose something to be really focused every game, to want to win. Some players are getting older too." Barca play Real Sociedad on Saturday hoping to continue their flying start in Primera Liga following their 5-0 opening day win over formidable Villarreal.
still the same footballer who was sent out on loan to Wigan last year. The only difference is that I'm turning out for United now. "I don't feel any extra pressure. I'm just coming to train-
ing every day and playing when asked to at the weekend. "I definitely don't feel as though I've made it. I'm still enthusiastic and hungry to learn. If people are saying good things about me then that's great. It's better than being criticised! Even though you've been at United a while, the first team dressing room is new territory." Following United's link with Dutchman Wesley Sneijder, a section of fans produced a banner saying 'Who needs Wesley? We've got Cleverley' and he admits that sort of admiration is always good. "Sneijder is fantastic, but if fans think that, then I must be doing something right. I'm not from Manchester but I've grown up here and know what this club means to the fans. If they get behind me like that then I'm buzzing," he said. The comparisons to now retired United legend Paul Scholes have also been forthcoming.
"I don't think you can compare anybody to Scholes. He was a great player and an individual, and that's what I want to be as well. I want to make my own name in the game," he said. Cleverley is delighted with how United have started their Premier League campaign with three wins, but he insists that means little at this stage of the season. "Nobody wants to get too carried away, but this is a youthful squad and it's exciting to be part of it," he said. "But we have to remember we're only a month into the season and there's a long way to go. Some of us younger lads don't know what it's like to win the Premier League yet, but that's where the experience of the others comes into it. "A few older players left the club in the summer, but we've still got experience in abundance. Our young legs should mean we don't have any fitness problems either."

Gago aims to see more action with Roma
STYLISH midfielder Fernando Gago insists there were no bitter feelings on leaving Real Madrid for a loan move to Roma and he has set his sights on winning back the regular place which deserted him in Spain. The 25-year-old Argentina international left Madrid af ter b eing told it was standing room only by Jose Mourinho, as he bolstered his squad over the summer with the arrival of a number of midfielders, including Nuri Sahin, Jose Callejon and Hamit Altintop. Gago, however, asserted he left Real on decent terms as he played down suggestions he was pushed out. "I have never had any problems with Mourinho, he made his choices and I made mine," Gago told Il Corriere dello Sport. "I left Madrid on good terms. The truth is I had started well with Los Blancos by playing regularly and winning a title, but then I got injured and was never able to find space in the first team." The transition from Primera Liga to Serie A seemed straightforward, and

Gago hopes manager Luis Enrique can make the move even smoother. "Luis Enrique has innovative ideas and the fact he speaks Spanish will help me adapt even better," said the former Boca Juniors star. Meanwhile, Italian league football will begin on Friday as the Lega Serie A signed a temporary agreement with the players union (AIC) over the collective contract. A long-running dispute between the clubs and players previously saw the first week of fixtures suspended, as neither side was able to strike an agreement. The argument revolved around a new solidarity tax
which the players will pay as well as ongoing doubts over people being frozen out of their teams when failing to move on during the transfer window. But after scrambling to bre a k t he de ad lo ck, an accord has been struck, meaning Serie A will resume as normal while talks over the collective contract are frozen until the end of the season. President of the Lega Serie A Maurizio Beretta told reporters: "There was no point in behaving in this way as the clubs have gained important advantages from this new deal. It is something that is innovative," said Maurizio Beretta, who is president of the Lega Serie A. AIC chief Damiano Tommasi said the reason behind progress was the players. "If the clubs have gained an advantage it means we will have less to talk about when it comes to renewing the contract," he said. "The footballers should be praised for having had the good sense to accept the new proposals."
Benayoun gamble for Gunners ARSENAL have taken a gamble on the fitness of new signing Yossi Benayoun (pic), after it emerged he was brought in from Chelsea without a complete medical. The Israel international completed a year-long loan to the Gunners on transfer deadline day, but sealed the deal so close to the 11pm cut-off he was unable to undergo the customary examinations. Reports from Israel claim the former Liverpool ace signed and faxed his contract direct from London's Heathrow airport, where he was waiting for a plane to fly him back to Tel Aviv at 11pm so that he could join up with the rest of his national teammates.

Her husband was not there at the time. Officers said Federica rang them to report the break-in near Porto Cervo on the Italian island of Sardinia, and the men fled emptyhanded.

Carroll must cut down boozing ANDY CARROLL has been ordered for a second time to cut out his boozing. England coach Fabio Capello repeated his warning after Carroll failed to make the qualifier in Bulgaria. The £35m Liverpool striker has struggled to find his best form this season and was relegated to sub for his side’s last game against Bolton. He has been suffering from a niggling knee injury but was fit enough to travel with England, and Capello is still concerned about the player’s lifestyle.

Back in favour Lampard likely to start against Wales
ENGLAND coach Fabio Capello hailed Frank Lampard as one of their most vital players and hinted at tactical changes against Wales when they clash in a Group G match at Wemley Stadium tomorrow (2.45am). Lampard started on the bench in the 3-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia last Friday, sparking speculation his international future could be coming to an end. It was the first occasion the 33-year-old had been left out of an England starting lineup, when fit and available, for a competitive game since the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. However, the Chelsea man could return tomorrow. “Lampard is a really important player, like others that are here and some players that are not here like Jack Wilshere, Steven Gerrard and other ones,” said Capello. “I think he’s ready to play with us. I don’t know if tomorrow he will play.
ers I have ever played with. “Because of his age people tend to right him off but he is still in excellent form. His record for England has been incredible.” Terry revealed all of England’s established names are aware that there are a number of players now vying for a starting role in the set-up. “I think we all feel that in the squad, that has come in conjunction with the younger players really pushing on and playing well for their club sides. People said we maybe took it for granted, playing in the side but that has never been the case since I have been involved for England. “It is a great mixture in the squad and I think Frank will rise to the occasion and will be back in the side very soon. “We saw the other night Chris Smalling did well and Gary Cahill alongside me. Its not just Frank, we all feel pressure from the younger players for our places.”

“Probably we can change the style to a different style to the one we played against Bulgaria because tomorrow we are playing at home.” Highlighting Lampard’s importance to the England cause, the Italian said: “He is one of the important players and one of the leaders of this squad.” Capello stressed England will need to be at their best to overcome Wales, having been impressed by Gary Speed’s side beating Montenegro 2-1 last Friday. “It’s very important to win tomorrow and beat Wales. Wales are in really good form. It will be a really, really dangerous game,” he said. Captain John Terry believes it would be stupid to write off Lampard. “Write Lampard off at your peril,” he said. “I have known him an awful long time and he was disappointed about not starting but trained incredibly hard the day after and he remains one of the best play-

winner: Damiao (left) strikes as Brazil beat Ghana — AFP photo
A superb goal by Tottenham target Leandro Damiao proved to be the difference between Brazil and Ghana as the South Americans defeated the Africans 1-0 in an international friendly at Craven Cottage this morning. The youngster finished with ice-cold precision to give his side the lead in the 44th minute but Mano Menezes’ men could not press home their advantage against a Ghana side forced to play the majority of the match with 10 players. Ghana’s goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey was largely to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable with a fantastic performance. The Ghanaians were without two key players in Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew
who were both out through injury. Ronaldinho and Marcelo both started for Brazil who were seeking a much needed win. Ghana started brightly, forcing two corners in the opening minutes but failing to test goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Brazil responded well as Lucio forced a save from Adam Kwarasey in the fourth minute. Moments later Ganso left the pitch with what looked like a hamstring injury and was replaced by Elias. With the game in the balance Ghana failed to go ahead in the 12th minute. A penetrating ball from Derek Boateng found Samuel Inkoom in behind the defence. The pressure got to the midfielder and a stray touch enabled Lucio to
get to his cutback first. Brazil began to dictate the tempo after that but were opting for the long ball too often to create any clear cut chances. Ghana were fortunate to not go behind when Damiao’s lob was chalked off for offside in the 26th minute. However, their luck ran out, when Daniel Opare was sent off in the 32nd minute. Damiao, 22, struck his first international goal. On the stroke of half time his diagonal run across the backline was spotted by Fernandinho. The Shakhtar midfielder’s vision and execution in the pass was matched in the finish as Damiao struck the ball low, drilling it across Kwarasey and into the corner.
