Maid starved to death
PETALING JAYA
Alleged abuse victim almost skeletal, may have been denied food and water for weeks By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my ISTI KOMARIYAH, the Indonesian maid allegedly abused by her employers, might not have been beaten to death, as initially suspected. It is now believed she may have been confined, denied food, and suffered a slow, agonising death by starvation. Police, however, remain tight-lipped over the probable cause of death. Selangor CID chief SAC Adnan Abdullah said they were unable to
reveal any details until the post-mortem and test results were received from University Malaya Medical Centre and the Chemistry Department, respectively. “The relevant parties are still working on the evidence and exhibits,” he said. Adnan confirmed that Isti’s remains had been handed over to the Indonesian embassy and the body sent back to Indonesia on Tuesday

for burial. A hospital source, meanwhile, said the 26-yearold’s body was mere “skin and bones” when it was brought to the hospital. “It was shocking as she appeared almost skeletal. It seemed as if she had been deprived of food and water for several weeks and was severely malnourished.” • Continued on pg2

Tickets recalled
PETALING JAYA
Football authorities step in to halt sale of old passes for this year's matches By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my
MALAYSIA'S football authorities have stepped in to stop the sale of old tickets for matches being played this year. The Malay Mail had reported on May 12 that “unmarked tickets” were sold for the Selangor-Perak match at Shah Alam Stadium on April 16. The tickets bore the former title sponsor's name — Telekom Malaysia — as well as the old Malaysian Super League (MSL) logo and only stated "Selangor" with no mention of the opposing team or date of the match. It was reported the tickets, priced at RM10 each, were being flogged by State FA officials at the stadium for a quick buck, minutes before the kickoff. Yesterday, MSL Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Stuart Ramalingam said efforts had been taken to curb the sale of old tickets and complimentaSOME major cases of abuse involving Indonesian maids brought before the courts in Malaysia: • 2004 – Nirmala Bonat
ry tickets at football venues. MSL Sdn Bhd is as the marketing arm of the national football association. “We have recalled all old tickets from the States. They have returned the tickets to the printers. As for the complimentary tickets, there are efforts on the ground to ensure those who are given such tickets put them to good use instead of trying to make a quick buck. We can only advise them," Ramalingam said. It was also reported that complimentary tickets were put up for sale by unscrupulous State FA officials. Meanwhile, The Malay Mail learnt that MSL Sdn Bhd had initiated an Integrity campaign to be launched tomorrow. The jerseys of both teams would bear a logo encompassing the word 'Integrity' on their sleeves while the captains will sign a pledge they would not get involved in match-fixing. days before her rescue. She had wounds and bruises on various parts of her body. She never regained consciousness and died in the intensive care unit six days later. On July 19 last year, Muntik’s employer, sugarcane seller A. Murugan, 36, was sentenced to the gallows after the High Court found him guilty of murdering her.
Asked about the campaign, Ramalingam declined to disclose details. Some observers had expressed alarm the national game had to resort to such a campaign to ensure it was free of corruption. The Integrity campaign was believed to have been sparked by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into corruption activities in local football. lowing a police report lodged by the Negri Sembilan FA on May 26. As a result, the team's coach, Yusarman Yusof, was charged with 21 counts of match-fixing in the Seremban Sessions Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to giving RM24,900 as bribes to 11 players between April 19 and 22. The episode resurrected the ugly scenes of 1994, when a similar clean-up saw more than 100 players being suspended, banned or banished from their State for match-
fixing. Several national and State players were affected. However, criticism levelled at FAM focused not only at the governing body's lack of measures to curb bribery. Football observers have also taken potshots at FAM over its allegedly haphazard management, citing examples such as certain committees having only met once, and some not all, since they were appointed last August. The Vetting, Monitoring and Transparency committee met for the first time on May 13 after The Malay Mail reported it had never met. This came about after The Malay Mail obtained information a former FAM official was linked to Singaporean matchfixer Wilson Raj Perumal, and the confessions of President’s Cup players that they were approached by bookies to also fix the King’s Cup tournament last year.

"She did display bruises and several scratch marks on her body. However, we believe those injuries did not contribute to her death." The physical effects of starvation included loss of lean body mass as well as bone loss which, the source said, could explain her emaciated condition. Police sources told The Malay Mail Isti was frequently locked up in a room and lashed whenever she complained. Her employers — a 56-yearold man and his 53-year-old wife — used a balloon stick holder to whip her whenever she protested against being confined. It is learnt the couple used to operate a printing business and, later, ran a stall at a night market in Taman Sea. They have two children in their 20s. Isti was declared dead upon arrival at the UMMC at 7.50am on Sunday. She had bruises and scratch marks on her back, arms and forehead, both new and old. Her employers were called

to the Sea Park police station where they were arrested after questioning. It is learnt that police, who went to the couple's house in Taman Sea, recovered two balloon stick holders and other items said to have been used to assault the maid. Isti had been working with the couple since December 2008. Her death occurred barely days after Malaysia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indonesia on May 30, which lifted the two-year freeze on Indonesian maids into the country. Indonesian embassy information, social and cultural affairs counsellor Suryana Sastradiredja was quoted as saying his government was awaiting action and decision on the case before considering a review of the MoU. The Indonesian government has not ruled out imposing another ban on its citizens coming to work as maids in Malaysia and has called on the authorities to charge those responsible for the maid's death as soon as possible.

THE lack of proficiency in English among Malaysians, especially graduates, is not surprising as the government has allowed its usage to decline. This was the opinion of Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) president Datin Azimah Rahim on Malaysians' English proficiency not being on par with Singapore and the Philippines. “Since the abolition of English-medium schools in the 1970s, the education system as well as the usage of English started to decline in the country,” said Azimah, when contacted by The Malay Mail yesterday. “ The decline deepens w h e n t h e gove r n m e nt allowed it to be so. Now it has affected whole generations, especially those born and educated after the 1970s.” She believes the recent abolition of PPSMI (Teaching of Maths and

"Students should be given the option to continue learning the subjects in English or Malay," said Azimah. “PPSMI was introduced in 2003 and students who were in Standard 1 at the time are now in Form 3, while those in Form 1 at the time and are now in the university would be in their second year there. They
should be allowed to pursue their lessons in whichever language they prefer.” She also said a total revamp of the education system should be done gradually. "The government should capitalise on groups of people who are more proficient in the English language, such as those in journalism and medical fields," said Azimah.
“In spite of many changes in the education system over the decades, such groups of people manage to retain their grasp and deep knowledge of English. Let these groups set an example to the masses, and perhaps help move the nation forward, while fixing the issue for the masses as well.” On Tuesday, Bernama reported that an analysis of the English Language

Malaysia ranked third out of five countries in Southeast Asia in English prof icienc y. Singap ore ranked first, followed by the Philippines.

Six months too long, say ex-NS trainees By T.K. Letchumy Tamboo t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my
A PROPOSAL to extend the National Service (NS) training programme from its current three months to six months by the National Service Department has not gone down well with some former trainees and parents. Noorhayati Sulaiman, 25, a former NS trainee at Gambang camp in Pahang, said six months was too long a stint. "NS is a good training ground as it instills many values, including unity and to be more independent. However, six months is too long to undergo such training. The department has to remember that people have other commitments as well, such as furthering their studies. And the longer training period may interrupt this," said Noorhayati from Gombak. Another former trainee, Pauline Wong, 25, said the extension was unnecessary. "It is a bad idea to have hundreds of teenagers cooped up in one small camp for half a year," said the journalist. "The programme is primarily to foster national unity among youths and three months is enough time to do that. Besides, doubling it to six months would also mean doubling the costs at taxpayers' expense."
Wong: Longer stint burden to taxpayers
Wong said six months, or longer, would make sense if NS was military training. "NS is just a course where teenagers get to mix with peers of different backgrounds and races, and trainees are also pampered with proper beds, cupboards and toilet facilities," she said. Volunteer trainee Lee Suet Ling, 25, on the other hand, said the extension may be good as it could teach them to be more independent. "NS taught me so many things, such as being independent. The extension will only serve to make the trainees better. In fact, I cried when I was sent back home after three months as I had wanted to stay longer," she said. The Malay Mail spoke to parents of three former NS trainees. Lucy Ng, a 53-year-old
Chan: Safety concern at training camps
retiree, said the longer period of training would interrupt their children's study plans. "The delay in completing their studies could delay their entry into the workforce and the market now is short of youth workforce," said Ng, a former human resource manager. Housewife Chan Ah Pat, 55, said NS was not safe for children, especially if they were there for a long period of time. "When my daughter went for NS training, there was never a day that I did not worry about her safety. I was the happiest mother in the world when I found out that my youngest son was not a candidate for NS." V. Murugayee, a 50-yearold clerk, said that the NS stint should instead be reduced by half, to six weeks.
'Teach them to vote in NS'
Lee: Cried when NS ended after three months
"Better still, there should not be NS at all. I had the misfortune of seeing both my daughter and son selected for training. I never slept well while they were there as I constantly worry about their wellbeing," she said. "And as their handphones were taken away, we could not communicate with them." Murugayee said patriotism should be instilled in schools and parents dread sending their children to NS as so many unnecessary deaths had taken place there. A local daily reported that the department's directorgeneral Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said they were preparing a working paper on the proposal. Abdul Hadi had also said the recommendations on the proposal would be handed to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
THE National Ser vice (NS) Department's plan to introduce a module to enhance awareness on the importance of voting when the trainees turn 21, has garnered the support of Malaysian Youth Council secretary-general Mohd Zaidi Aziz. "Every citizen has the responsibility to vote, so it is better if youths are taught about it from an early age," said Mohd Zaidi. He said students as young as 15 should be taught about voting and it should be included in the History syllabus. "There are university students who do not know the importance of voting, so the earlier they are aware about it, the better," he said. Malaysian Indian Youth Council (Selangor) chairman Sivakumar Ramachindran said there were ways to attract young voters. "The government can bring down the voter's age limit to 18. "The Election Commission could also conduct a voting awareness campaign at public universities," he said.

The rise of child abuse awareness MALAYSIANS first became aware of the horrors of child abuse after the infamous 'Baby Bala' case which came to light in 1990. The Welfare Department's children division deputy director Fatimah Zuraidah Salleh, said this horrific case served as a trigger which led to the establishment of various child abuse defence mechanisms such as Talian Nur. "The 'Baby Bala' case was the nation's wake up call on child abuse," she said. In 1990, the country was stunned and appalled when an unconscious toddler, B. Balasundaram who was badly battered and bruised, was found dumped near the Kuala Lumpur Hospital toilet. The Malay Mail, which broke the story, reported that the 26-month-old toddler's tiny body was covered with cigarette burns and fresh abuse marks. Worse still, the boy was also sodomised. Balasundaram died without regaining consciousness two days after being found and his death led to the amendment of the Child Protection Act 1994.
Foreign maids to know who to call THE Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) plans to educate foreign maids on turning to Talian Nur in times of need. "We will hold a briefing with all maid agencies very soon to inform them of Talian Nur as it is a good avenue for maid abuse complaints to be directed at," said a senior Papa official when commenting on Talian Nur receiving 40 maid abuse calls last year. "Until now, the maids brought in by maid agencies are told to contact their respective agencies directly if they are abused by their employers. The maids are also advised to go to the nearest police station to lodge a report. But now, they will also be told about Talian Nur." The official said public awareness of Talian Nur has increased since its introduction four years ago. "Previously, there was no such system, but since the setting up of Talian Nur in 2007, it has been easier for the public to make reports about violence in the home."

Talian Nur receives 100 child abuse calls every month By T.K. Letchumy Tamboo t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my
TALIAN NUR, the hotline operated by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry for complaints on violence, abuse and natural disasters, has received an average of 100 child abuse calls per month up to April this year. Up to April 30 this year, 404 child abuse cases have been reported while a total of 480 cases were reported for the whole of last year. Statistics released by the Welfare Department reveal the bulk of child abuse cases occur in Selangor, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Johor. Although the figure looks alarming, the department does not seem to think so. In fact, it says it is a good sign. The department's deputy director, Fatimah Zuraidah Salleh said the increasing number of reports via Talian Nur indicates the public has become more aware of the hotline. "People call and alert us whenever they see signals that indicate child abuse. These signals could be as simple as crying and seeing a child alone on the street but they still call and alert us," she told The Malay Mail. Fatimah said the increasing number of calls is not some-
thing to be worried about as only a fraction turn out to be genuine child abuse cases. "Upon receiving each call, our officers check on it. More often than not, the tip-off would lead to nothing major. For example, a concerned neighbour who hears screams and shouts next door will call to alert us of possible child abuse. When we investigate, it may just be a fight between siblings but what matters here is the awareness and the concern shown by the public," she said. "We want to enhance this rapport as we want more people to make reports. As long as the public is suspicious that something is not right, especially when it comes to a child being abused, do report to us. Whether it is genuine or not is another matter altogether." Similarly, Fatimah said the number of maid abuse reports through Talian Nur has also risen. According to statistics released by the ministry, there

THE prime areas where children get hurt in most abuse cases are on their stomachs, heads, and the back of their bodies. This was revealed by the Welfare Department's children division deputy director, Fatimah Zuraidah Salleh. "Most abuse comprise stabbing with blunt objects, pouring hot water and beating the child," she said. Fatimah also said the cases reported through Talian Nur concern children aged between four to 12 years. "Many of the calls we receive are not genuine but we have to give each and every call the benefit of the doubt. We send our officers to check but if they turn out to be untrue, we advice the families not to continue to

She revealed that out of the 1,680 abuse cases, 808 cases were committed by parents and step-parents, 322 cases were by relatives, 270 cases were by the child's mother's boyfriends, 231 cases were by acquaintances including bus drivers and family friends, 26 cases were by neighbours and 23 cases were by siblings.

Landslip reprieve RM62k remedial works on Balakong's dangerous slope to be completed next week By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my
REMEDIAL works are being carried out at the landslipprone area of Desa Karunmas in Balakong especially to an unstable 22m-high slope to ensure no immediate danger is posed to residents. The RM62,500 project is a short-term solution to several landslips which occurred in the backyards of several houses at Jalan Karunmas 7. The remedial works which started four days ago, would be completed by next weekend. Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching yesterday said the repair PETALING JAYA
works would also reduce the gradient of the slope from 45 degrees to about 27 to 32 degrees. “A gabion block (reinforced wall) will be built as extra protection for the row of 11 houses 3.5m away from the slope. In addition, soil bags will be placed in the gulley at the top of the hill to address soil drainage.” Teo had gone to inspect the work site with Balakong assemblyman Yap Lum Chin, together with Kajang Municipal Council engineering de-
partment staff councillors. The works are being executed following a landslip in end-April that damaged a retaining wall which residents claim wasn't the first they had encountered. On long-term slope protection plans, Teo said a study was now being conducted by a council-appointed expert and is expected to be ready next month. “The project is expected to cost a few million ringgit. It would be awarded to a contractor in August through an
open tender and the project is expected to begin in September with completion by December. The slope will then be monitored for two years." Teo explained the recurring landslips were due to works done by an irresponsible developer. She had tried to get the errant developer to fix the problem, but to no avail. “We feel the matter cannot be delayed any further. So the council and State government have stepped in first for the sake of the residents,” she said, adding the council would also
take legal action against the developer to recover the remedial work costs. Resident Chin Nyok Yin, 67, said:“We have lived in fear. Now, with the remedial works taking place, I feel more at ease.” Taman Desa Karunmas Rukun Tetangga deputy chairman Simon Koh said the problem arose about six years ago due to landscaping done on the upper slopes. “Trees were cut down to develop the land and now there’s not even a single tree left.”

'Single ticketing system not enough' By SHAHRIM TAMRIN shahrimtamrin@mmail.com.my
A SEAMLESS journey is not all about single ticketing as it forms only one small part of the public transport system. Association for the Improvement of Mass Transit (TRANSIT) chairman Muhammad Zulkarnain Hamzah yesterday said a better transit fare structure and seamless transit interchange facilities would contribute to a truly seamless journey along with the implementation of a single ticketing system. “At present, certain short journeys require two or more transit modes. This makes it more expensive than lengthier journeys made within a single transit mode,” he told The Malay Mail. To illustrate the point, he said LRT commuters from KLCC station paid almost 50 per cent
more to get to Titiwangsa station as compared with travelling to Petaling Jaya stations even though these stations are further away. “We believe distance-based fares can be easily incorporated into Prasarana’s present ticketing system with the recent launching of RapidKL's multimodal ticketing system.” He also said the ticketing aspect should be managed by a centralised fare collection agency appointed by the Klang Valley’s own transportation authority. “We hope the future authority will compensate each of the contracted transport operators according to the quality of services rather than the amount of passengers or fares captured.” Zulkarnain also said the gov-
ernment must consider creative solutions, which could include dedicated bus lanes, priority signals, queue jumps and busonly ramps or crossings that allow fast, seamless and hasslefree train-to-bus and bus-tobus integration. “For now, TRANSIT is happy to hear commuters will no longer be required to cross multiple-ticketing barriers between main rail systems in 2013. But the core issue lies with the network integrity of the entire public transportation system in the Klang Valley.” Centre for Environment, Technology and Development chairman Gurmit Singh said a single ticketing system would be meaningless if the public transport services were not reliable.
“First and foremost, the government and transport operators should be serious about addressing the issue of reliability and connectivity as a good ticketing system is only a small component.” For a man who uses only public transport and dubbed the country’s ‘Green Man’, Gurmit said: “I wasted a lot of time just waiting for feeder buses around Klang Valley. "If we have a good ticketing system, it would be useless if the public can’t get reliable public transport services.” Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association secretary-general Muhammad Shaani Abdullah has welcomed the single ticketing effort. "It will encourage more people to take public trans-
port as city folks are always on the move," said Muhammad Shaani, who regularly takes the LRT to work. "However, a good ticketing system is not the primary reason to attract people to use public transport. Better facilities for the disabled, the operators increasing frequency of busses around the city and the government increasing the overall public transport services efficiency, will show the seriousness of encouraging the rakyat to use public transport." The Malay Mail frontpaged the article 'Ticket to ride' plans for smooth road-rail travel by 2013 when the electronic pass systems of two major transport operators merge. Syarikat Prasarana Negara
Bhd — the operator of the LRT, monorail and RapidKL bus services — and KTM Bhd, which runs the Komuter service, have confirmed they were working towards a single ticketing system. After years of having to face different ticketing systems, preparing small change for exact fare and queuing up at counters, both transport service providers confirmed a single ticketing system would materialise in 2013. Commuters approached by The Paper That Cares at the integrated stations of Masjid Jamek, Dang Wangi, Hang Tuah and KL Sentral also welcomed the news of a single ticketing system and said the system should have been implemented years ago.

Amazing Amanda Singer does well to bag awards at international music fest By EENA HOUZYAMA eena@mmail.com.my
AMANDA Imani will perform at this year’s Anugerah Planet Muzik at the Max Pavilion in Singapore next month. The prestigious invitation comes following her recent success in representing Malaysia at the International Music Festival Discovery 2011 at Bulgaria's famous sea capital Varna. Amanda won two awards at the festival: Best Young Talent by World Association of Festivals and Artists
(WAFA) and second place for Best Original Song, Selamilah Cinta from her debut album. "I was thrilled beyond expectations. All participants were technically trained in voice and instruments from a young age through renowned academies. I, on the other hand, had two weeks to prepare,” Amanda said. “I am thankful and blessed for the invaluable experiences gained where I was able to share and network with
everyone around the world,” she said. At Varna, she did well to capture the clean and green city with her charm and grace. She also took time to enjoy the city's green miracles: the Marine Gardens which are the largest in the Balkans; Euxinograd park, the former Royal Palace and the paradise of St. Constantine. Although Amanda does not have much exposure within the local entertain-
ment scene, she was nominated at the AIM 17 (2010) in the Top 5 Best Local English album category. She also received an award for her song Selamilah Cinta at the VOIZE Independent Music awards (VIMA) and featured on MTV Asia in the Asian Takeaway and GerekSeh 2010 programmes. Past Malaysian artistes to attend and win at the International Music Festival Discovery include Aizat Amdan and Mila Jirin.

Didie Alias to co-host awards show
REASON TO SMILE: Amanda with her awards
THE big regional break Fadzilah Mohd Ali (right), popularly known as Didie Alias, had been waiting for since she began her career almost 23 years ago, has finally arrived! Yesterday, she was named a co-host to represent Malaysia at the Anugerah Planet Muzik 2011 (APM) at the Max Pavillion in Singapore on July 15. APM usually appoints hosts from
the three regions participating at the awards — Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The last Malaysian host was Aznil Nawawi, in 2009. The award show was on hiatus last year for technical reasons. “For almost two weeks, I've walked around in a daze. It was surreal and such an honour to receive the phone call asking me to host such an auspicious event, especially since it is aired regionally,”said Didie. She added this may just be the biggest job ever offered to her as a host throughout her years in the entertain-

Viann Zhang excited about new movie WHEREVER mainland beauty Viann Zhang goes, rumours and gossip seem bound to follow. Like when she first burst into the entertainment scene a few years ago, there were rumours of her undergoing plastic surgery to give a little “lift” to her upper assets. The model-turned-actress then denied such rumours by posting photos of herself during childhood — insisting everything was real. In Kuala Lumpur recently to promote local movie
Start’s Good, End’s Good, she said: “I am excited to be in Malaysia. I flew in yesterday with little opportunity to experience the local culture, but all I got to experience was the heavy traffic!” She said she was looking forward to acting in the movie, as shooting will start soon in Penang. “I am not bothered by the massive cast and working with some of the more experienced people. In fact, I find it quite relaxing especially since it’s my first time to Malaysia, let alone shoot-
ing a Malaysian movie.” She was again caught up by more salacious rumours earlier this year, which romantically linked her with Hong Kong TVB actor Ron Ng. But the latter denied any such links. Fans were concerned, especially after the career of another Hong Kong heartthrob, Raymond Lam, almost got destroyed when photos of him with one of China’s top models, Mavis Pan Shuang Shuang, in a compromising position were seen on the Internet.

Left in the dark Year-long wait for Socso payment finally comes through
A MOTHER-OF-TWO from Klang suffered a double blow after meeting with an accident last year. Not only is she unable to return to work, she's been forced to wait more than a year to receive assistance from the Social Security Organisation (Socso). A. ANANTHI says before the accident, she worked in a leading financial institution in Klang. However, the accident last year left her with a spinal injury that prevented her from returning. "I have been diagnosed with multilevel degenerative disc disease and was advised to appeal for assistance from Socso.
GETS THE ACTION "My employers assisted me with my Socso application. Later, they informed me Socso wanted me to submit my application directly to them as they wanted original documents pertaining to my claim and not certified copies." On Sept 30, ANANTHI submitted her application for the "Temporary Disablement Benefit" with the documents to Socso's office in Klang. "I was informed by the customer service officer I
could make a submission for both temporary and permanent disablement benefit, since I have medical reports from both government and private hospitals. "I was told my application would be processed within 15 days to a month." Two weeks later, she called Socso, only to be informed the officer in charge of her claim was busy but would visit her soon. When the officer did visit her at her home, ANANTHI asked how much longer it will take for her claims to be processed. She was told that since she had a previous injury dating back to 2006, they would need
more time to investigate. "However, I informed the officer my application was only for the injury sustained last year." Months passed by and ANANTHI did not hear from Socso. "Each time I called them, I would be transferred to various departments only to be informed my case is still under investigation. "On Jan 11, I received a final reminder letter stating they wanted a medical report from a private medical centre. "I have never received any prior letters from Socso about the request and now I get a final reminder. "In March, they told me
they were checking if my medical certificates issued by the government hospital were related to my accident. It's baffling. How can these two items not relate to each other? "How much longer do they expect me to wait for the payment?"
●A SOCSO spokesman says: "According to the records, the insured person had an accident on Feb 1, 2010, during her journey to work. "The case has been investigated and accepted as an 'employment injury' by Socso. "The payment for a 'Temporary Disablement
Down and dirty streets of KL THE heart of the city is piling up with rubbish dumped by the very people supposed to be its front-line defence — its residents. A tourist alerted Hotline to the condition of the streets and the disappointment he felt after seeing trash scattered all over. "Malaysia is a major Southeast Asian tourist hub and what's happening is really sad," said the tourist from the UK. The Hotline Roving Team took to the streets to check out how the average Malaysian treats the streets of KL. Our team visited Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Masjid India and Jamek, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Jalan Ceylon, Jalan Hang Tuah, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Doraisamy, Jalan Bukit Nanas, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jalan Petaling and Brickfields over the past week. Although the city is looking better than it used to, shopkeepers, pedestrians and residents alike were still found littering. Our checks revealed Brickfields, the back lanes of Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Masjid India are among the dirtiest among. Shopkeepers and restau-
rant workers throw rubbish in back lanes instead of disposing waste into garbage bins provided by the local authorities. In Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, Brickfields, pedestrians seemed to be the main culprits. We came across drink packets, plastic bags, candy wrappers and styrofoam containers scattered along the walkways. In front of Angkasa Impian 2 Condominiums in Jalan Ceylon stands a City Hall signage stating Jangan membuang sampah (Do not litter) and right under it, a heap of rubbish in all its ironic glory. Our observations also found that Kota Raya is looking much cleaner, while there is still room for improvement in Jalan Masjid India.

"We can't work alone in ensuring the city is clean and the cooperation of the community is vital. A RM500 fine will be imposed by our enforcement officers on the spot when one is caught littering."
Benefit' of RM23,835 for 303 days of sick leave was paid on March 29. "In regards to the late issuance of payment, the accident was only reported by ANANTHI'S employers on Sept 30, and the case finalised as employment injury on March 29 for which payment was made on the same day." When contacted, ANANTHI confirms receiving the payment from Socso. "I am happy to finally receive my payment," adding Socso advised her she could make a permanent disability application after her sick leave ends in October.

"I booked a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne from May 5 to May 13 for two persons for RM1,382," she says. "I thought it was a wonderful offer but I was double charged the amount on my credit card. "I sent a clarification letter to AirAsia to get a refund. "I sent two emails to them on May 25 and June 1, but all I got was an auto-generated message stating the following: This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and may be privileged. I've called them and attached my bank statement in an email to AirAsia hoping they will clarify the matter soon."
● A SPOKESMAN for AirAsia Bhd says: "We have investigated the case and apologised to the client after she was double charged due to a system error." The refund was processed on May 24 and the normal refund process will take up to 30 working days, the spokesman says. When contacted, STELLA says she is glad she will be getting her refund soon.

In this section, we highlight situations that remain unresolved despite bringing them to the attention of the authorities
One month on and nothing's changed LAST month, HOTLINE received calls from residents unhappy with the road conditions in Damansara Perdana. One resident, SIMRAN RAM KAUR, had said it was terrible, no thanks to lorries from construction sites that use the road daily. "I am a regular user of the
nearby Jalan PJU 8/8. The road is in terrible condition." SIMRAN said the road is usually muddy and dirty. "This is caused by lorries carrying sand from various construction sites in the area. When these lorries pass through Jalan PJU 8/8, the sand from these lorries fall on the road, leaving tyre marks."

SANDY MESS: This is what Jalan PJU8/8 looks like every day
Today, even after Hotline highlighted the matter, the situation remains the same, despite an assurance from the Petaling Jaya City Council it would be looked into. The council's public relations
officer Zainun Zakaria says the its engineering department had identified the developers of the construction sites around Jalan PJU 8/8 and will instruct them to clean the road and wash the lorries' tyres before using the road.
Landslide jitters MEMBERS of the Mother of Dragon (Lung Mu) Temple in Jalan PJU 8/8, Damansara Perdana, are worried a landslide may be triggered by nearby construction work on a country clubhouse. The temple, belonging to the Kwong Siew Association Alliance Malaysia, is located in a former quarry. Temple adviser DATUK DR WONG SAI HOU says "Our main concern is a hillslope next to the temple as it is is being converted into a pathway for vehicles transporting materials to a cement-patching plant nearby. “The cleared pathway is located on a Class IV hill, which means it has a 45 degree slope. This can be dangerous as there seems to be poor drainage, which may result in heavy rainfall flowing directly to the temple. We hope the developers of the clubhouse can level the slope to 35 degrees so that it will be less of a threat. "We hope the authorities will not wait too long to take action." "We are also concerned about the smog coming from the cement-patching plant and want the Department of Environment (DoE) to study the pollution here." Another concern is a fourstorey basement car park being built opposite the road from the temple. "The developers have been transferring blocks of earth from that site to a nearby lake, which we fear may result in spoiling the lake altogether. “We marked the 2,222th birthday of the temple's diety last

BEING FRANK Whore in bed, lady in public (June 6)
Three magic words
HOW do we change the ways of philandering or straying husbands? There is no need for women to serve their husbands like prostitutes. Looks like the ladies from the Obedient Wives Club have forgotten the magical words: “I love you”. Club vice-president Dr Rohaya Mohamed should instead encourage wives from the club to utter this into the ears of their spouses once in a while. This may seem old-fashioned but nevertheless, this can save or enliven a stale marriage. Instead of telling women such rubbish like, “a man married to a woman who is good or better than a prostitute in bed has no reason to stray”, why not encourage wives from the club to give their husbands a hug anytime they feel like it, or when their husbands come home after a hard day’s work.
Men do not like nagging, arguments or to be henpecked. Most men stray from home to avoid these and eventually, this is how they get to know someone else, a female companion or friend, from the pubs, bars and elite joints. So, wives should refrain from nagging, throwing tantrums or shooting volleys of complaints when their husbands come home, when he is resting or having his meals. Wait for the right time when you know he will listen to you and take it one complaint at a time. For a lasting, blissful and happy marriage, both parties must give more than they take from each other. Apart from enjoying a good sex life, they must learn to forgive and forget, to trust and understand each other, and treat each other with respect. In this way, they can

Respect and love DEAR Obedient Wives Club vice-president Dr Rohaya Mohamed and spokesman Siti Maznah Mohd Taufik: I could hardly believe my eyes when I read your implication that wives who do not obey their spouses are to be held responsible for domestic abuse and the reason why their husbands solicit the services of prostitutes. SEREMBAN Consumerism in schools
IS consumerism taught in our schools? I saw this when I visited Sydney recently and it made me wonder if our children know how to buy, when to buy and where to buy. Are we teaching our children to shop wisely? Young consumers must learn what their consumer
expected to submit to the husband, he is expected to love the wife with all of his life. I do not agree that wives are abused simply because they do not “listen to their husband”. This belief is primitive, and in this day and age when we are all striving for equality between sexes, what you are implying is for us women to “bow down” to our husband's wishes, no matter what. The essential thing to remember is moderation. Husbands and wives should treat each other with respect and love and neither party should be doormats, “yes-persons” or slaves. As for your Obedient Wives Club, I
is important to learn about consumer protection, where and to whom one can lodge a report or complaint on unscrupulous price hikes, faulty items or a misleading advertisements. To our youngsters, I say stand up and be counted. Bulbir Singh
Standard of English must improve SADLY, the standard of English spoken today by some our country’s top politicians, directors and chief executive officers, as seen on the television news, is not good. The standard of written and spoken English in Malaysia has deteriorated from the level it was a few
years ago. The government seems to be encouraging the rakyat to write and speak in Bahasa Malaysia more than English, and wants most subjects in schools to be taught in Bahasa Malaysia as well. However, the end result is we get students who speak broken or sub-st andard
English. English is an international language, used widely all over the world. More and more people are using it. If we do not have a good and sound knowledge of English, how are we going to progress? shaktiman
PUTRAJAYA Biometric system
Clear causeway congestion THESE days, it seems many tourists from Singapore and other countries avoid coming to Malaysia through the causeway to avoid the constant congestion at the Johor Baru entry points. All these problems stem from the introduction of the Biometric Identification System implemented on June 1. Before this, it only took about 20 minutes to clear the causeway. Now, however, it takes about one-and-a-half to two hours. The Home Ministry and Immigration Department should work out something better to ease traffic so tour-

Facebook in photo tussle FACEBOOK is at the centre of another privacy row after bringing in facial recognition technology for its millions of users, the Daily Mail reports. The world's leading social networking website has "enabled" a function that automatically identifies people in photos without their knowledge. The feature has been expanded from the United States to "most countries", Facebook said on its official blog on Tuesday.
Nintendo launches WiiU console NINTENDO yesterday finally released details of its long-awaited WiiU gaming system - the successor to the massively-successful Wii console. The gaming giant revealed its new videogame system which will support high-definition graphics for the first time and a 6.2-inch touchscreen controller. Although tight-lipped bosses would not say how much the console will cost, gamers may be able to get their hands on the WiiU in as little as 10 months, the Daily Mail reports.

Opposition tribesmen take control of Yemen's second city
ARMED opposition tribesmen have seized control of part of Yemen's secondlargest city, Taiz located 250 kilometres south of Sanaa, security officials said yesterday, illustrating the breakdown of authority in the country amid a potentially explosive deadlock in the capital. Wit h t he wounde d President Ali Abdullah Saleh out of the country for treatment, the United States, Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni opposition are pressing for a formal end to his rule and the formation of a new government. But so far there's been little response from Saleh's ruling party, and his allies appear to be digging in, insisting the president will return soon. That has left Sanaa locked in an uneasy cease-fire between government forces
and opposition tribesmen barricaded in their positions after two weeks of heavy battles between them killed dozens. Yesterday, tribesmen collected 10 more bodies of their fallen fighters from the streets of their main stronghold, Sanaa's Hassaba district, where most of the battles took place, a tribal spokesman said. The United States fears this power vacuum will give freer rein to al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen, one of the terror network's most active franchises, behind two attempted terror attacks on US targets. In a videotape released yesterday, the deputy of slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden sought to adopt the anti-Saleh movement. "We are with you in your uprising," Ayman al-Z awahri said in the video posted
on Islamic militant websites. He warned Yemenis not to be tricked by the Americans and their Gulf allies "who want to replace one American agent with another," urging the opposition to continue until Saleh's regime falls and "they put in its place a just regime that rules by Islamic law." On a visit to Egypt yesterday, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said Washington was particularly concerned about al-Qaeda's branch gaining a greater range of operations. "It is incredibly dangerous and made that much more dangerous in the ongoing chaos," Mullen said. "I would certainly urge leaders from every side of this challenge to be calm and try to resolve the issues peacefully." — AP

One man, a 55-year-old security guard from the Bamboo Bazaar district, was trampled to death after he came out of his house to see what was going on.

Gadaffi's rape order
INVESTIGATORS have evidence that Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi ordered mass rapes and bought containers of sex drugs for troops to attack women, the chief ICC prosecutor said yesterday in the United Nations. Luis Moreno-Ocampo said he may ask for a new charge of mass rape to be made against Gadaffi following the new evidence. The chief International Criminal Court prosecutor is expecting a decision from judges within days on his request for crimes against humanity charges against the Libyan leader. "Now we are getting some information that Gadaffi himself decided to rape and this is new," Moreno-Ocampo told reporters. He said there were reports of hundre ds of women attacked in some areas of Libya, which is in the grip
of a months-long internal rebellion. More n o - O c amp o s ai d there was evidence that the Libyan authorities bought "Viagra-type" medicines and gave them to troops as part of the official rape policy. "They were buying containers to enhance the possibility to rape women," he said. "We had doubts at the beginning but now we are more convinced that he decided to punish using rapes," the prosecutor said. "It was very bad, beyond the limits, I would say." Gadaffi's regime had not previously been known for using rape as a weapon against political opponents. "Rape is a new attribute of his repression," the prosecutor said. "Now we are confirming that there was a policy to rape in Libya." — AFP

CHINESE movie stars gathered yesterday to launch a blockbuster movie celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. The Beginning of the Great Revival traces developments between the 1911 revolution that overthrew imperial rule and the establishment of the Chinese Communist Party on July 31, 1921. It is part of a series of events in China marking the anniversary. It features many of the Chinese film industry's biggest names such as Andy Lau and Chow Yun-fat, who attended yesterday's event. Director Han Sanping told a news conference the movie is better than 2009's The Founding of a Republic, which told the story of the Communist Party winning power in 1949. China Film Group is hoping for a repeat of the success it had with The Founding of a Republic which made 415 million yuan (RM193m) at the box office. Its success was helped by politically correct theatre operators who flooded their properties with screenings. The Beginning of the Great Revival is likely to receive similar treatment. Communist China's founding father, Mao Zedong, is played by Chinese actor Liu Ye, best known for his roles in the Zhang Yimou imperial drama Curse of the Golden Flower and Dark Matter, which co-starred Meryl Streep. — AP

And now, the Ustazah Fuelled by the hit imam-search series, now comes the show for the ladies
By SHUHAIDAH SAHARANI iedas@mmail.com.my BUOYED by the stellar success of the Imam Muda reality show, Astro Oasis (Astro 106) is working to have an all-women show in similar vein, titled Ustazah Pilihan. Keeping to the strict theme, it will be ‘no entry’ for guys. “We are working to ensure that only women are involved in this production, even the crew members. If possible, we also want the weekly live audience to be all women too,” said Astro Oasis channel manager Izelan Basar at the launch of Ustazah Pilihan recently. The event was officiated by deputy minister at the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim. The programme, scheduled to commence on Oct 1, will showcase 10 chosen muslimah (Muslim women) who will be groomed to be a true ‘muslimah icon’. The icon will embody
SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE: 'Ustazah Pilihan' is looking for young Muslim women with a fair knowledge of Islam and are dressed appropriately and decently at all times
the roles of an educator, a guide and a leader of Muslim women. Ustazah Pilihan will show the importance of being a responsible Islamic woman not just as a mother or a wife, but one who can hold the responsibility of an educator, a nurturer and a guide to the new generation with the ability to communicate well and articulate as well as be a wise and mature thinker. “The idea for the pro-
gramme came up after the success of Imam Muda. I believe it is our responsibility to give a fair opportunity for the women to spread their ability in dakwah activities in a more contemporary manner,” he said. “But of course, the matters of dakwah that we are trying to convey will suit the current state and circumstances and will hold close to the laws of Syarak. We hope that this format will be attractive to the masses.”
A series of auditions will be held in July. The 10 selected participants will then be placed in KL to go on a few courses to further educate them on current issues, religious knowledge and more. “All participants will be given specific tasks for the duration of eight weeks. The format will cover certain issues that are faced by women now, so it’ll be relevant to this modern society,” he said. Each week, the participants will be divided into two
groups and will be trained and monitored by a number of Mursyidah (mentors) who would in turn get advice and supervision from a Mudirah (headmaster). Marks will be given to the groups as well as individuals in a group based on their participation in the weekly group work. The audition is open to Muslim women with a fair knowledge of Islam and are dressed appropriately and decently (covering
her aurat), aged 18 until 27 years old and healthy. Those interested are required to bring their SPM or STAM certificate along. Auditions for the show will be held from 8am till 5pm, from July 9 at SwissIn, Sg. Petani, Kedah; July 15 at Hotel Sumai Suite, Kuala Terengganu; July 23 at Hotel Puteri Pacific, Johor Bahru and July 30 and 31 at Kompleks Pusat Islam, KL.
Smoke on screen THIS is a tricky situation. You have a friend who is a smoker, and you just do not want him to smoke when you're around. As painful as you would like to admit it, your friend has his right to smoke. You might also find it difficult to tell him that you can't stand the smell. Of course you also have to worry about your own health and while he smokes away, you are the one coughing non stop as your throat dries up from all the secondary smoke that you are forced to inhale. Well, you can ask him nicely and he might just respect you and put out his cigarette. However, there are also some who would just point their lit cigarette to other direction, and you are still not entirely smoke free. At the end of the day, most non-smokers will just suffer in silence. Young director Aron Koh might have the solution for you. His short film, Cinta Akhir, that features Liyana Jasmay, IZ Sulaini and Pierre Andre is a subtle campaign against smokers and it might also give you an idea of how you could approach your smoker friends. Cinta Akhir, which is part of the Smoke Free Lifestyle
Campaign (ASAP), tells a simple story about three teenagers with different lifestyles who somehow exist and share the same space. Liyana plays a cigarette peddler in a pub. She is a free spirited girl who smokes like a chimney and could not care less about her health. Along comes Pierre, a laid back non-smoker scholar, who ends up in a deep conversation with Liyana. IZ (of One In A Million fame) plays a non smoking pub singer. Iz's character leads a healthy lifestyle although he is surrounded by smokers every day. The 10-minute film, shares an interesting insight on the three individuals as their stories seem to connect with each other. They become the channels for all the subliminal messages to viewers. One subtle message includes how smoking would affect one's life — from health to relationship issues. The film was launched recently in conjunction with the world's No Tobacco Day. "I am so happy to know that our efforts in making the film as part of the campaign a success have been well accepted by
FOR A GOOD CAUSE: (FROM LEFT) Movie director, Aron Koh; Director of Disease Control Division, Dr Chong Chee Keong; Actors Liyana Jasmay and Iz Suhaily with director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Dennis Lee during the launch of ASAP Smoke free Lifestyle campaign at GSC Mid Valley — Pic: Shahir Omar
the government as well as our media friends." Koh said the ASAP is so far the biggest project in his effort to spread health messages. He said the short film will be made viral to the public. "We are not forcing people to quit smoking, but we are introducing another lifestyle that can be as fun smoke-free. I purposely chose an open ending for the film. Cinta Akhir ends with an image of a hospital. Viewers might just have all sorts of questions. Like, what actually happens to Liyana? Does it end in death? Is she diagnosed with cancer?
"Viewers would have to make their conclusion. Either way, we all know smoking is an unhealthy habit and it may lead to an unhealthy ending," Koh added. Koh is rather confident about his work and plans to send Cinta Akhir to the Pusan International Film Festival. Liyana, a non-smoker, finds her character very interesting. Since the film is compressed in only 10 minutes, everything must be done right and the impact must be felt. "As a non smoker, it was a bit difficult for me. I had to keep the smoke in my mouth con-
stantly and tried not to inhale. It's challenging. I really do not enjoy the taste or smell. I somehow managed to pull it off. "I'd like to think of this project as one of my contributions to educate the youth on how bad it might reflect on our life if we still think that it is cool to smoke," Liyana said. Meanwhile, Iz was chosen to be the official ambassador of ASAP, and he is to go all the way in supporting this healthy cause. He also recorded the theme song for Cinta Akhir, which will also be his next single. "Apart from school and uni-
versity projects, I'd never really acted professionally. I honestly feel that this short film will be a good platform for such a positive campaign. I do not smoke, not just for health reasons, but because it is unnecessary. I still can have fun and be creative without cigarettes," IZ said. —

Cinta Akhir is expected to go on air before the end of June. The ASAP team is also working on more projects which will be supported by young celebrities. Check out the full length of the short film here: http://www.asap.my

Super kids rule!
By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my THE blockbuster Super 8 is definitely a tribute to all geeks who are into sci-fi thrillers. Directed by J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek) and produced by Steven Spielberg (E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark), the project is also about passionate filmmakers who go back to old ways of making movies using the 8mm format.
At the heart of Super 8, are six kids in summer of '79 in a small Ohio steel town who share a summer dream of making their first Super 8 monster movie masterpiece. Joel Lamb (Joel Courtney) and his best friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) enlist the help of their gang Martin (Gabriel Basso), Cary (Ryan Lee) and Preston (Zach Mills) to make a movie for a film competition. Ever the passionate director, Charles gets the help of school sweetheart Alice (Elle Fanning) to be the female lead in his movie. After witnessing a horrific train accident, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth — something more terrifying than any of them could ever imagine. While the trailer may indicate that the movie is one that
involves a frightening nemesis that is all out to wipe the entire town, Super 8 is really about these young characters and how they get through their teenage troubles by using their passion for filmmaking during their unusual summer together. Well, until the movie’s sci-fi elements kick in. Going back to the days when the two filmmakers Abrams and Spielberg themselves cut their own teeth on 8mm movie-making, there is no doubt about the film’s '70s classic feel to it. With the development of music on the move (the Walkman) and '70s movie-making culture in the US, Super 8 takes us back to the times when life was simpler, especially if you lived in a small town, even though it may not be the same as the one that Deputy Lamb (Kyle Chandler), Joe’s father who goes all out to protect. One of the more stunning effects in Super 8 is the staggering chain-reaction of the train crash itself, which begins when it collides with a car on the railway track. The massive explosion is one of the more memorable scenes in Super 8, other than the kids' view of a typical, late '70s working class life in a Midwest town. Interestingly, there was no formal script when the kids were
shooting their movie in Super 8. Instead Abrams decided to leave it to the imagination of his young cast — who did a good job in these scenes (who are also mainly amateur actors). This time around, the adults take a backseat in Super 8, giving the younger generation a chance at the spotlight with their realistic acting. Their love for making movies and their passion for zombies and teenage crush go back to the essence of teenage life, especially for those born before the '80s. Sit down for a little longer to get a special surprise at the end of the movie. Super 8 starts its run in the cinemas today.
Henry’s messy crime IT seems that Keanu Reeve's career as an actor has come to an end... After watching Henry’s Crime, that is. For the past 25 years or so, Reeves has been known as one of “the” screen Gods, but for some reason, the actor has done nothing great
A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT: Reeves (above) made a poor movie choice
apart from his hits like Speed, Constantine or Matrix. Gone were the days when his on-screen presence could help boost the box office — and it has become clear that Reeves has reached his limitations. Reeves certainly needs another career boost, and Malcom Venville’s Henry’s Crime isn’t helping him in any way.
The story for one appears to be pretty low budget. That might be okay to some, but the problem is, the movie looks amateurish too. A movie with melancholic twists such as this one should have a more compelling and solid story-telling style. In Henry’s Crime, Reeves plays Henry, who works as a night shift toll collector along the highway in Buffalo, New York. A man with seemingly no dreams or purpose, Henry sleepwalks his way through life. He is unwittingly tricked into participating in an illconceived bank heist, and is thrown in jail for the crime he does not commit. There, he meets with an inmate, Max (James Caan), a con man, who likens the prison as his home. When Henry discovers that a secret tunnel at the local theatre leads to the bank’s vault next door, he recruits his former cellmate, Max to be his partner-in-crime, robbing the
bank for real. From the moment the movie starts, one would sense that it isn’t made for everyone. Henry’s Crime has that sort of "artistic feel" to it and a little something noir about it. Perhaps it’s the pacing. At one point, boredom sets in and one would wish for a more action-packed film like Speed. The movie has a lot of panning shots, which does not really suit its overall feel. It’s a tedious process to actually sit through the entire film (you'd end up looking at the watch a lot). If anything, Henry’s Crime is a felony by itself. It’s a fatal mistake to have an ensemble of A-listers together (the other being Vera Farmiga and James Caan) in a seemingly low-budget movie. While each tries to outdo the other, the cast sometimes forget to engage the audience into their characters’ lives. At one point, one gets confuse if Henry's Crime is a ro-

mantic story or a movie about bank robbery (with some real action thrown in). Surprisingly what’s good about the movie, though, is the slightly better-written script. Most of the time, the movie’s bare survival depends on the script to patch things up. However, if the story fails you, you can look forward to the witty dialogues. There's also plenty of dark humour to savour. The filmmaker could have
focussed the attention on the few lead roles, which will then help sell tickets at the box office, instead of lining more and more additional characters and extras as the film progresses. Henry’s Crime is what you might choose for a Sunday afternoon movie day out, when you don’t feel like doing anything. The end for Reeve's career? Well, he better get a great script to redeem himself. WE have it made. Rich in characters, with plenty of sun the whole year round and a variety of great food, Malaysia is certainly blessed. Our liberal stance on many things plus a rather positive socio-economic environment have also been the envy of many. All the elements have made it very conducive for many international names to work here in various film productions. Recently, Nusantara Edaran Film (NEF) announced that another project that involves international names will be shot here. The film, Start’s Good, End’s Good, will be directed by Bjarne Wong. The film be released early next year, just in time for the Chinese New Year celebration. Shooting for the new movie will start in early September in Penang, with an extensive cast that is a mix of both local and imported names. The four international artistes are Hong Kong’s Mark Cheng Ho-Nam, Daniel Chan Hiu-Tung; and China’s Viann Zhang and Julia Jiang Yu-fei. “I like Malaysia!” exclaimed Chan at the film launch recently. “I like it here because there's plenty of sun and I love the warmth here. I also love the local food — it’s very nice. I tried out the seafood at a place in Jalan Alor and I absolutely love it. Malaysia always gives me a fresh feeling,” he said. Cheng, who has been to Malaysia quite often, agreed. He said that Malaysia has changed quite a lot and is different every time he comes for a visit. “The last time I came to Malaysia for work, I noticed that it had changed quite a lot. Still, it’s a great place to

be. The local food is a must-try,” Cheng said. For those not familiar with Cheng, he made a name for himself by starring in a lot of action movies like Young and Dangerous 5, Tai Chi Boxer, A Man Called Hero and the more recent Legendary Assassins. On the possibility that the film might just be compared to Raymond Wong’s All’s Well, End’s Well franchise, Cheng said that it’s a different story altogether. “No, it’s not the same. The story is very different from one another. Out storyline is very unique and we have lots of actors and actresses in just one movie. Hopefully it will give a fresh feeling to the audiences,” he added. Chan, who previously worked with Cheng in a TV series in China expressed his excitement on working with the veteran actor again. “Of course I am very excited! The last time we worked together was during a fighting scene, and I was quite scared at that time.” For China’s up-andcoming young star Jiang, her
first impression of Malaysia revolves much about the "unique food". “I had tried the steamed lala (clams) and stingray. I had never eaten anything quite like that before!” she said. Is she pressured with the fact that she is working with such a big cast? “No. Absolutely no pressure at all. In fact, I find it quite relaxing," Jiang said. Other confirmed cast so far includes Malaysia’s Soo Winci, Cindy Chen and veteran actress Lai Ming (who was one of the original Empat Sekawan stars). Labelled as “he sui pian” or Chinese New Year film, Start’s Good, End’s Good is about four beautiful sisters, who is constantly searching for their eternal soulmates. The eldest, May, has lost all her faith in men due to the memories of her cheating father. Her sisters, Lan, Ju and Zhu must now change their older sister’s mindset and convince her to find her Mr Right. Start's Good, End's Good will join the rank of other films that
feature international names. Earlier this year, Hong Kong’s Dante Lam started rolling his camera for The Viral Factor (previously titled Against War), with various filming location in the city including Avenue K in Jalan Pinang, with the Petronas Twin Towers as the backdrop. Not long after that, local director, Adrian Teh shot The Wedding Diary in Penang, with veteran actress Kara Hui and local talent, Ah Niu as part of the cast. Only a few days ago, another local director Bjarne Wong, whose resume includes movies like Sayang You Can Dance and Possessed; announced that he will be shooting Malaysia’s first 3D horror-thriller tentatively titled The Hunter. The Hunter features local talents as well as actors from China and Taiwan. At the same time, Double Vision also announced it will be shooting two new movies, Paper Moon and Ghost Buddies, slated for release next year. Shooting has already begun for both movies. — By LOONG WAI TING

Popular 'AF' contestants return to rock the stage
By eena houzyama eena@mmail.com.my NINE years ago, Astro Ria unleashed Akademi Fantasia (AF), a reality TV talent search programme based on a successful Mexican franchise LaAcademia. It had since become one of the most watched shows in the country. The current AF season is announced to be the last, and yet, many still hold on to the memories of the past seasons. Some of the previous

contestants had since moved on to other projects, but their fans still could not get enough of them. They might not be the show's champions, but as
Enot, Raqib and Aznil
far as their die-hard fans are concerned, they remain the real stars and idols. Realising that fact, Astro decided to give all the fan favourites from the past seasons
Ika
another round of competition. The competition was also a tribute of sort to Aznil Haji Nawawi, the host for the first five season of AF as well as the current season, who has played quite a big role in shaping the show. The concert aptly titled 'Konsert Kenangan AFNil', featured contestants from the previous shows who were all competing for a car. "We chose past participants who did not even reach the final. We also chose them based on the memories and stories attached to them during their involvement in AF," producer Irwan Rauf said. At the concert, which was recorded last Sunday, all the previous AF flunkies were given the liberty to choose their own songs and choreograph their own performance.
They were judged by names synonymous to AF — former trainers Adnan Abu Hassan and vocal coach Siti Hajar as well as former resident critic Kudsia Kahar. Rosmayati Sidik or better known as Rosma (AF1) was the first to perform that night. Rosma, who is married to her AF1 sweetheart Khai, sang Bertamu DiKalbu by Jaclyn Victor. While she was the more impressive performer in the first season, Rosma was not in form at Konsert AFNil. She seemed to struggle to stay in pitch. Yet, one can't deny Rosma had matured tremendously, in terms of image and character. Next up was one of the AF2's darlings, Zarina Zainoordin, who is now a rather established actress. Zarina performed dangdut favourite Goyang Inul. It was a huge risk, but Zarina showed how confident she was as a performer. She seemed very comfortable on stage and gave the audience a fun and cheeky show. AF3 was represented by Mo-
Diddy
hamed Zulkifli Mohamed Idir, better known as Kiefli, who is also currently more known as an actor. He decided to take a risk too by singing Faizal Tahir's Mahakarya Cinta. Unfortunately, he did not seem prepared enough. Maybe he had not sung that much after AF3. Kiefli was not only pitchy but he seemed rather screechy too! Syamsul Hirdi Muhid, famously known as Diddy, was chosen to represent AF4. Fortunately, Diddy who had since established himself as an actor and a singer, did not disappoint. However, his choice of song, Broery Marantika's Biar Bulan Bicara, was a tad too safe for such an experienced singer. From AF5 was Mohamed Syawal Roslan (Syawal), who was always teased about his "friendship" with classmate Noni. Syawal chose Keris Patih's Tapi Bukan Aku for the concert. He seemed pretty comfortable and expressive on stage. Syawal had also moved into acting with his first film will be released this coming Hari Raya. Ika
Nabila Abdul Rahim (Ika) of AF6, on the other hand, should just stick to acting. Her attempt to sing Lady Gaga's Poker Face was laudable, but the overall result was pretty messy. No one understood what she was singing. AF7's representative was Nurfazelah Mad Tahil or better known as Zizi, who is now a proud member of hip hop group The Fabulous Cats. She was eliminated in the fourth week of AF7. In AF7, Zizi was known more as a rock chic. At Konsert AFNil, she decided to slow it down with Datuk M. Nasir's Suatu Masa. The next performer, Nadiawati Ainul Basir (Ain), was likened to Salamiah Hassan by Kudsia Kahar. Ain did well with her husky voice. She has good control and on pitch with her rendition of Keranamu Ku Sanggup by Agnes Monica. The last performer was Fahrur Raqib Abdul Majid (Raqib) who was recently eliminated from season nine. Although Raqib did well, the song he chose was just a little too safe as well. Singing the song Bukan Cinta Biasa by Afgan, Raqib definitely showed off his skills. The show also featured special performances by AF9 four finalists Lena, Hazama, Azri and Fina (who will compete at AF9 finale in Putrajaya this Sunday. Closing the show was Aznil's memorable performance. He sang Spoon's hit song, Rindu Serindu Rindunya. Konsert Kenangan AFNil was a rather brilliant gesture to say farewell to all AF loyal fans. It was tearful, yes, but it was also fun to watch. Who drove the car home? Well, see it for yourself this Saturday on Astro Ria at 9pm.

By zainal alam kadir alamkadir@mmail.com.my IT’S all about sex and procreation. That was my simple explanation to everything way, way back when I was not even eligible to vote. That is still my explanation to everything, even now. A friend of mine once disagreed. So, I reminded him about all the trips he took to Thailand each time he had enough money every time he got stressed out. “That’s why people work very hard right? They would want to make sure that they have enough, and having enough means they could get what they want. Ultimately people want sex. For those who can’t get it for free, they’d pay for it,” I said. I might sound a little crude but it’s the truth. Any psychology major (which I am not) will tell you that I am right. To give a little more respectability and credibility to this column (and to make me sound slightly smarter), I shall quote the Hierarchy of Needs developed by Abraham Maslow. The theory is valid till now and is used to understand human motivation, management training, and personal development. The five different stages of the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs will tell you that I am right (I love it when I am right). The most basic need in the hierarchy itself states that sex is one of them, apart from other elements like food, drink, air, and shelter. The second level includes all the safety needs (security, order, stability, law); while the third level groups elements like family, affection and relationship. Once all these are achieved, you might have your “esteem needs” includ-
ing achievement, status, responsibility and reputation. Of course the ultimate of all the hierarchy of needs is self-actualisation that would denote one’s personal growth and fulfilment. I guess, quoting the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs might just also make me sound sexier to those who are into intellectual discourses. At the end of the day, as I said, it still points to sex and procreation. Of course the word sex is mainly masked with more kosher words, like love, marriage, relationship, dating and such. All our lives, we’d put on “a show” for that very reason, to attract at least one person that could perhaps be our soul mate and ultimately, err, sex partner. I mean, why do people bother dressing up? Or dress up certain ways? What’s the point of being fashionable or stylish? Everyone wants to be noticed. No matter how timid or bold we are, deep in our heart, we’d always wish that there’s someone out there who might like you. Smart people would target others in the same bracket and those in the simpler category would go for likeminded friends and partners. One of my idols, a great male dancer guru, once shared a tip with me on how to be charismatic on stage. “Seduce your audience.” How? “Well, imagine yourself a woman and the people in front of you are all lustful males.” Gulp. How did he get this idea? “From a great Makyong teacher,” he said. I mean, the same trick was used by Elvis. He was not selling just his music. It was his sex appeal. The more the girls scream, the more money he made. That was what I told my band members too. Why do you think Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles and Lady Gaga are richer than many other talented superstars? Faizal Tahir attracted a different crowd when he was part of a nasyid group, but the moment he decided to
switch gear and change to his current “superman mode”, he manages to get more attention from the masses (of course his music is brilliant too). Aizat was a lovable pudgy boy in Akademi Fantasia 5, who got the attention of many doting mothers. The moment he slimmed down and showed his “other self”, he started to attract the attention of the younger crowd. “You know you’ve arrived if the girls (and boys) start screaming. That would tell you that you would have enough in your bank account,” I told the boys in my band when we first started our music project. To make sure that they achieved the goal, I conceptualised an entire look for them that would go with their music and their expression. Each had that individual flavour, while gelling well as a whole team. Some of the boys were initially not too comfortable with the idea, but they somehow played along. Well, you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink, and my boys were not thirsty enough, it seemed. So we moved on. Some people I know said they could not care less about fashion. They are more or less, err, anti-fashion, because the fashion world belongs to only “small-minded people” who are too insecure and in need of attention all the time. So I told them that their anti-fashion attitude itself is a fashion statement that is pretty sexy in the eyes and minds of certain people. Really, I do have friends who are more interested in geeks and nerds who do not even know how to match the right socks with their shoes. I also know quite a number of people who find tattoos sexy, while a lot of girls I know would go for wealth. I had met many who have the fantasy of dating politicians because they told me that “power is an aphrodisiac”. Go to any Dangdut club and my point can be proven easily. The number of young girls holding on to wronglyattired middle aged men will
tell you a lot. Those who are born pretty are lucky as they don’t need much to get the right attention and in the longer run their equal partners. If you’re not pretty, but you still want to get your man, learn to cook. You might have heard this from your grandmother and the elderly. “Kalau tak, macam mana nak laku (how else can you find a mate…?” They did not have to elaborate further. The truth is, the tastier your food is, the more loved you will be. The more loved you are, the more sex you might get. I mean, in accordance to our law, custom and religion. Many people that I shared this idea with thought I was being ridiculous and that I had a one-track mind and a “dirty person”. I am just merely stating the obvious, and as I said, I do not need to have a PhD in psychology to be able to share my thoughts. If you’ve watched Social Network, you’d know that my theory is well supported. Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook after a chain of events. He got dumped by his girlfriend, and he needed to come out with “next big thing” to get her attention. In fact, Facebook itself is all about the opportunity for sex and procreation. Why would Zuckerberg even include “relationship status” and “interested in” as part of the profile segment? That idea was also spurred when one of his friends asked him if he knew the relationship status about a certain girl. If you’re single, Facebook is the best way to find other single and available people. If you’re longing for the attention of your old flames, Facebook is a great way to be in touch with them. Who knows? One thing might lead to another right? Seriously, if was not about sex and procreation, the Obedient Wives Club would be redundant and I would not be bothered writing this pseudo-intellectual and pretentious piece. My status? Well, it’s complicated (and you know there’s a hidden message there too)…

Nor Saliza continues contributing after retirement

PROUD: Gombak Setia's goalkeeper going through the paces with a coach
A FORMER national hockey player, who went on to become a teacher, has gone the extra mile to give back to hockey by coaching schoolchildren. And since she took over the reins, the school has become a force to be reckoned with. When Nor Sa liza Ahmad Soobni FORMER NATIONAL: retired from the Nor Saliza did not national hockey want to part with the scene, she did not sports she loved so want to totally break much — Pix: RAZAK away from the sport she loved GHAZALI
so much. When she was appointed a physical education teacher in SMK Gombak Setia, she immediately envisioned a hockey culture in the school. "I retired from the national team in 2009 after playing in the Asia Cup indoor. Malaysia were crowned champions that year. It was the right time to retire and give way to the younger generation," she said, when met during a coaching clinic at the school. Nor Saliza knew that it would take time to nurture
a new team and bring them to compete at the schools level, but she gained new confidence when she saw the Gombak Setia students showing so much dedication. "They made my job easier as they were very enthusiastic and showed a lot of interest. Many of them showed natural talent and picked up the basics quickly." Nor Saliza then recruited 37 players for the Under-18 boys and girls teams. Training was after school. "I arranged a few friendly
matches for them, and they did fairly well. I also got some help from friends who were in the national and State teams." The SMK Gombak Setia bunch was very lucky to have had several former nationals providing them with tips. Among them was former international and Perak player M. Kaliswaran. In the first year, Nor Saliza's players did well in the Gombak district schools tournament, with both the boys and girls finishing runnersup. This year, though, both teams emerged champions. "I was so happy for my students and the school. They really did everyone proud as we never thought such success could be achieved in such a short time," she said. Eleven players — four girls and seven boys — were even picked to play for Gombak in the inter-district tournament. The four girls were Izzatun Nafsiyah Jamil, Aqilah Abd

MUHD ANWAR IBRAHIM never really took hockey seriously until Nor Saliza Ahmad Soobni was posted to the school. "We just played for fun, but when Cikgu Saliza became our coach, we started taking hockey seriously. At first I didn't even know that she was a former national player until she told us." Anwar said when he and his friends learnt about the teacher's background, they knew they had hit the jackpot as there was so much to learn from her. "She was strict during training but never gave up on us, and would teach us techniques until we mastered

"She had her own way to motivate us whenever we were trailing in matches. She would share her own expriences with the national team, and that would normally get us going. "She taught us that glory would never come easy and that there was always a price to pay, and that price was nothing but hard work," added Anwar. Two weeks ago, former international M. Kaliswaran, who still plays for TNB in
the national league, held a coaching clinic at the school as part of TNB's community programme. Said Kaliswaran: "My work was quite easy here. The hard effort had already been put into the school by Nor Saliza. The school has several talented players here. Nor Saliza has since become an icon in the school with the headmaster praising her efforts. SMK Gombak Setia headmistress Hajar Maimun Ahmad said if not for Nor Saliza's dedication, the students would not have put in as much effort. "The students started seeing Nor Saliza as a role model and that's because she puts in so much effort with them. We're proud to have teachers like her." Hajar added Nor Saliza and her students have made the school proud and she hopes SMK Gombak Setia would continue producing good hockey players.

Jawariah goes for gold in her last Sukma By vijhay vick vijhayvick@mmail.com.my
NATIONAL women's No. 1 player Jawariah Noordin looks a certain bet to continue her dominance in the sport this year. The Penangite, who is now donning Negri Sembilan colours, barely raised a sweat en route to reaching the final. The Armed Forces personnel won the singles gold medal last year in Malacca under the Penang banner. "I opted to leave Penang because I don't think I can progress under their guidance. They don't have many training s essions," said Jawariah, 21. "Negri were my only other option as I was transferred to the State."

FT braces for tough time
IT WAS smooth sailing for Federal Territories in the early round of the Sukma competition. Now, their true capabilities will be tested as the city cagers face quality opponents in Penang and Malacca in the second round. Penang, FT and Malacca are in Group X while Kedah, Pahang and defending champions Johor are in Group Y. The Federal Territories lads will play their first game of the second round against Penang today (2pm) at Maba Stadium. Pahang, meanwhile, will entertain Kedah in the other group match at 3.30pm. Malacca are tournament favourites but Penang have shown much improvement
When informed about what Azzudin said, Rajagobal pointed out contracts were normally for two years with an option for one more. A former international, Rajagobal rekindled the faith of local football fans in the national team when they won gold at the 2009 Laos Sea
as evident in their final first round game against Perak on Tuesday. "Things were relaxed in the first round but now it's going to be a rollercoaster ride," said FT coach Low Boon Hong. "We are in the Group of Death. Penang and Malacca are no pushovers and both teams have every right to play in the final. But I believe my boys too deserve a shot at the title. It's going to be an interesting race to the final." Meanwhile, Malacca continued their dominance in the second round when they defeated Penang 71-69. Defending champions Johor continued with their winning streak after managing a 10050 win over Kedah.
This is the last Sukma Jawariah will participate in as Sukma is for the Under-21 age-group. After receiving a bye in the first round, she showed no mercy to Perlis's Sharifah Syafeenaz and Malacca's Chan Jia Qi in the second round and quarterfinals respectively, winning both matches 6-0, 6-0. The only point she dropped w a s a g a i n s t S e l a n g or ' s Archnaah Rajan in the semifinal, still winning comfortably 6-1, 6-0. Up next is second seed Alyssa Boey of Selangor. JOHOR'S Muhammad Zamiruddin Jalaludin (pic) had an intuition about last night's futsal final — that he would net the winning goal. That happened with four minutes of the game left when Mu hammad s core d the only goal against Negri Sembilan. "I knew I would score. It was a matter of how many," said Muhammad, albeit a little cocky. "This means something. This is the first time futsal is included in Sukma and so Johor are the inaugural winners." Ne g r i s t a r t e d a s t h e better team but Johor were the more-discipline d side, preferring to neutralise Negri's counter-attacks and making their own forages upfront. Johor coach Lahat Dadok. "It is a great achievement to be crowned champions, considering we were merely underdogs." Meanwhile, Selangor missed out on ge tt i ng a medal when they lost 7-6 to Sarawak in the play-off for bronze. "I've not seen her play since but am confident about retaining my status as the No 1 player." Jawariah will also seek to double her joy as she partners Syed Mohd Agil in the mixed doubles final against Selangor's Juan Antonio Los Santos and S. Theiviya. Clay master Nadal feeling the strain after French Open
RAFAEL NADAL (pic) admitted he is feeling the strain of his French Open heroics after the world No. 1 kicked off his grasscourt campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden at Queen's this morning. Although Nadal was lively enough to break Ebden in the first game of each set and clinch victory in 75 minutes, the Spaniard revealed that his mind and body weren't as sharp as he would have liked against an opponent ranked 168 in the world and playing only his 11th ATP Tour match. With just 11 days until the start of his Wimbledon title defence, Nadal knows he has no time to rest but ideally he believes there should be a bigger gap between the two Grand Slams. "I had a tough Roland Garros this year. I played very long matches so my energy
levels are not perfect right now," said Nadal, who will face Radek Stepanek in the third round. "I'm here because I love this tournament, it's one of the most beautiful in the world but it also works for me to start have feeling on the grass. "In a perfect world there would be a month and a half between Roland Garros and Wimbledon but I think
it is too difficult to make changes." Nadal may be worn out already but the Spaniard's season is certain to go the full distance after he was told by ATP officials that his victory over Ebden gave him enough ranking points to secure a place in this year's World Tour Finals in November. Nadal joins Australian O p en champion Nova k Djokovic as the first players to qualify for the event, to be held at The O2 Arena in London. "It was a fantastic tournament last year for me, playing in the final, with very emotional matches. I'm very happy to be qualified and to come back again this year," Nadal added. Meanwhile, world No. 4 Andy Murray admits he is risking his dream of winning Wimbledon by playing at Queen's this week.

Hot start to Ivanovic's Wimbledon warmup FORMER top-ranked Ana Ivanovic made a stomping start to her Wimbledon buildup with a victory in less than 45 minutes in the Aegon Classic this morning. Ivanovic launched winner after winner with her groundstrokes, tearing apart Anna Tatashvili's serve in a 6-1, 6-0 win over the young Georgian who's good enough to have gained a direct entry into Wimbledon. Ivanovic was the tournament's highest remaining seed at No. 2, and the power of her best weapons suggested that despite any doubts instilled by seven months since her last title, she was a strong unofficial favourite for the title as well. She said: "I had forgotten how lovely the grass is. It's great to be back on it. I really enjoyed it." — AP

Bolt to run 200 for first time in 13 months
USAIN BOLT says he is fully focussed on the world championships as he prepares to run his first 200m race in 13 months at a Diamond League event in Oslo tomorrow. The Jamaican world recordholder said this morning it will feel strange to run the 200m but, having recovered from last season's injuries, is confident of running a fast race at the Bislett Games. "It's going to be weird but it should be good," said Bolt. "I'm definitely going out there to run hard and see what I need to improve more."
Bolt won the 100 at his first race of the year in a Diamond League event in Rome two weeks ago and is now aiming to take his recovery up another notch after missing part of last season with Achilles' and back problems. Meanwhile, South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya is also competing as she seeks to move on from having to undergo a gender test following her victory in the 800m at the 2009 worlds. Renault capable of matching big guns, says Boullier LOTUS RENAULT team principal Eric Boullier (pic) is convinced his marque stand on the brink of propelling themselves in with the big teams. They are now fourth in the constructors' standings ahead of this Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, narrowly ahead of Mercedes GP Petronas as the duo chase Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari. Although Boullier is aware his team have displayed considerable race pace, qualifying has been an issue, in particular for Nick Heidfeld, who has started in the top 10 only twice. However, come race day, Heidfeld managed to finish higher than his grid slot in each of the six races so far this season. Appreciating the hot-lap showdown on a Saturday is an issue, Boullier said: "Technical director James Allison and the guys on the race team are working really hard on this. "They have looked at the various issues and are starting to have a really clear understanding about what is missing. Our car is fast, sometimes very fast, and I'm confident we can put everything together to ensure we are quick at any given time. "There's no magic wand, though, so we'll need to put in the hours in the wind tunnel to get to where we need to." Meanwhile, Lotus Renault have been cleared to run their

black and gold livery throughout the course of the weekend. Concerns were aired that the colours could be linked to the days when Lotus were sponsored by cigarette brand JPS. Given Canada's anti-tobacco legislation, Renault were forced to contact the Quebec authorities to ensure their cars were not in breach of any regulations. "We're delighted to be able to race in Montreal in our usual colour scheme," said Boullier. "The Quebec authorities noted the current livery makes a reference to images from the 1980s when the car was sponsored by the tobacco industry. But it has also accepted the fact that Lotus Renault receive no direct or indirect financing from the industry in question. "We would like to thank them for acknowledging our good faith. We are fully aware of the stringent restrictions imposed by the law in Quebec on promotional associations with tobacco. "As a result, we will use all means available to dispel any misconceptions that our identity and that of our partners is somehow associated with this industry."
VASTLY experienced Vicente del Bosque already has the World Cup but he also now has the statistics to back up his status as Spain's most successful national team coach. Tuesday's 3-0 win over Venezuela in a friendly was his 39th success since succeeding Luis Aragones in 2008 — and he overtakes his predecessor as the coach with the most wins for Spain. Remarkably, del Bosque's team have brought up that total in just 44 matches, signalling their position as the dominant team in world football. Under
the 60-year-old, Spain won their first World Cup last year — adding to the Euro 2008 title they achieved under Aragones. Making his debut on Tuesday night was Manu del Moral, who earned his first call-up and a move to Sevilla on the back of outstanding performances for Getafe last season. Manu was full of praise for the record-setting del Bosque. "He is making history in every sense, winning everything at club and international level. He is a great professional and a great person," the striker told TVE.
Del Bosque also led Real Madrid to two Champions League successes and a pair of Primera Liga titles before being unceremoniously sacked in 2003. He has demonstrated his qualities again with Spain, and the victory in Venezuela merely confirmed Spain's mastery of the international game. Barcelona duo David Villa and Pedro put Spain 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and Xabi Alonso scored the third by half-time. Pedro also paid tribute to his boss.
"Del Bosque is a great coach and we want him to continue with us for a long time. He has achieved great things with Spain and hopefully will continue for much longer," he said. Meanwhile, Del Bosque praised his players for a positive end-of-season tour that came to an end with the win over Venezuela. He is also pleased his players are in great form heading into their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers in September and October — having defeated the United States 4-0 in Boston last week as well.

Luis Enrique out to charm Roma
BARCELONA legend Luis Enrique confirmed he has reached an agreement with Roma to become the club's new manager. The former Spain international stepped down as coach of Barcelona B last week and will succeed Vincenzo Montella. "The agreement with Roma is total," Luis Enrique told Sky Italia. "The only thing that is missing is the signature. In the next few days I will arrive in the Italian capital.
"I am delighted and enthusiastic to have joined a winning project. "I am a winner and I have chosen a winning project, otherwise I would not have left my family and my role here (in Barcelona)." The 41-year-old turned down an offer to guide Primera Liga side Atletico Madrid, opting instead to experience Serie A. "My style of football is an attacking one and a spectacular one," he said. I want
to bring so many people to the stadium. I want the fans to enjoy the team's play." Luis Enrique is not concerned by his lack of experience in managing a team. "No one knows me in Italy but in one year's time, I will be able to clear any doubts," he said. "Facts will speak for themselves. With regards to the transfer market, I will try to work with the best." Luis Enrique is expected to sign a two-year contract with
the Rome outfit. A cons or tium le d by A m e r i c an bu s i n e s s m an Thomas Di Benedetto bought Roma from the Sensi family earlier this year. Meanwhile, Barca striker Bojan Krkic is being linked with a move to Roma following Luis Enrique's announcement. El Mundo Deportivo reported the 20-year-old Spaniard is keen to follow his former Barca B coach to the Eternal City.

All is well, Quinn assures Sunderland fans
SUNDERLAND chairman Niall Quinn reassured fans of the club's ambition as Jordan Henderson closes in on his £20 million switch to Liverpool. The Black Cats on Tuesday reached agreement with the Reds over their Academy graduate and gave him permission to discuss personal terms. It is understood David Ngog could be used as a make-weight in the deal. Henderson would become the second high-profile player to leave the Stadium of Light this year after Darren Bent's January departure to Aston Villa, but Quinn promised the club are already on the trail of the players manager Steve Bruce believes will take them forward. "Jordan is a credit to himself, his family and Sunderland's Academy and everyone here wishes him the very best for the future," said Quinn. "I'm pleased that we got the deal to a level that we felt was right for our club. "We know the areas that need strengthening and the type of player we need in order to progress, and the job of bringing those players to the club is continuing at a pace." Both clubs confirmed that a deal had been agreed yesterday after days of speculation over Henderson's future. Sunderland did not want to sell their home-grown midfielder, who was due to fly away on European Championship finals duty with England's Under-21s yesterday. However, they always knew they might struggle to hold on to a youngster who has already been capped at senior level if a big club came in for him, and were determined to get the full market value in return. In another development, Sunderland are reported to have launched a triple bid for Manchester United fringe players Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Darron Gibson. The £20 million transfer fee on Henderson will at least give manager Bruce the funds he needs to re-shape his squad this summer. United boss Alex Ferguson is said to be willing to let the trip move on, with the players themselves now set to decide whether they wish to seek new pastures or fight for their places at Old Trafford.
GOALKEEPER Tim Howard (pic) hinted that he would like to see out the remainder of his playing days at Everton. The 32-year-old has spent the last five seasons at Goodison Park following his £3 million move from Manchester United in February 2007 after an initial loan spell. And the veteran shot-stopper, who was an ever-present last season, says he has no intention of leaving Merseyside and cited manager David Moyes as one of the main reasons for him wanting to stay.
"It's hard to speculate but my heart is there for the club," said the United States international. "It's a place I love to be. I don't want to leave. This game is a business sometimes so there is that side to it but I'm happy, I'm happier than I've ever been. "Part of that is the fact that we've got an unbelievable manager but again things happen and times change but the club always stay the same so I hope that I can be there," he said.

United expected to beat Liverpool, Arsenal for Jones
BLACKBURN defender Phil Jones is set to sig n for Manchester United in a £16 million (RM79.2m) deal. Although there has been no official confirmation from the Premier League champions, they are expected to beat off competition from rivals Liverpool and Arsenal to land the highly-rated 19-year-old. Blackburn have accepted an offer, and Jones was reported to have undergone a medical at United yesterday. Jones has made a huge impression at Ewood Park since making his debut in March last year. He finished last season strongly after a three-month lay-off with a knee injury and featured in the game last month that saw United clinch the title. United striker Wayne Rooney has already welcomed the prospect of Jones moving to the club. Rooney wrote on Twitter: "Phil Jones is a good young English player. One of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield too." Jones, who had been due to join the England Under-21 squad travelling to Denmark for the European Championship, will further increase United's defensive resources i f t he t r ans fe r go e s
through. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are a well-established partnership at the back. But Ferdinand has suffered from injury in recent seasons and Jones is thought to be viewed as back-up for the England interantional, e ven t houg h Jones' Under21 teammate Chris Smalling has excelled during his first s e as on at Old Trafford. With Jonny Evans and John O'She a in Ferguson's squad a s w e l l , Jo n e s ' arrival casts doubt over the future of Wes Brown, who h a s b e e n l i n ke d with Sunderland. Jones is expected to be the first of a number of new f a c e s at Un ite d this summer, with Aston Villa attacker Ashley Young, Ud i n e s e w i n g e r Alexis Sanchez and At l e t i c o Ma d r i d goalkeeper David de Gea all on Ferguson's wanted list, in addition to Luka Modric and Wesley Sneijder. Another defender, R aphael Varane of Lens, has also been linked.

N'Zogbia prefers Newcastle IN-DEMAND Wigan midfielder Charles N’Zogbia is set to snub Liverpool — because he is desperate to return to Newcastle. The French ace will leave Wigan this summer but his heart is set on St James’s Park rather than join Kenny Dalglish at Anfield. Newcastle are ready to match his £55,000-a-week wages — almost twice his current salary. And while they are unwilling to meet Wigan chairman Dave Whelan’s £12m valuation, the Geordies are optimistic a deal can be thrashed out.

Aquilani denies Milan link
THE agent of Alberto Aquilani denied reports in Italy that his client has been approached by AC Milan. The Italy midfielder spent this season on loan at Juventus from Liverpool but the Turin giants have yet to confirm if they will sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis. Milan are looking to reinforce their midfield following the departure of Andrea Pirlo to Juventus and reports in Italy have strongly linked Aquilani to the San Siro outfit this summer. "I can say that I am not aware of any interest from Milan," said Aquilani's agent Franco Zavaglia. "They are just rumours and we have had no contact with Milan. "Juventus have asked us for a few days to reflect and in the meantime, we are looking at the options in Italy and abroad. "I don't think the problem has to do with the buyout clause but rather that Juventus are looking for someone whose characteristics are more defensive." Liverpool signed Aquilani for £20 million from Roma in 2009.

ASTON VILLA striker Darren Bent insists the team will be able to cope with the loss of Ashley Young. Young is expected to join Manchester United in the next few days, with Villa set to make a profit on the £9.65million they paid Watford four-andhalf years ago. The England winger is keen on playing Champions League football but Bent believes Villa are not a one-man team. And he is hoping that England Under-21 player Marc Albrighton will fill the gap left by Young.

Jol's a coup by Fulham VETERAN Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes it was quite a coup to secure Martin Jol as the west London club's new manager. The 55-year-old former Tottenham boss finally moved into the Craven Cottage hotseat when he replaced Mark Hughes, who resigned last Thursday after just one season at the helm. Jol came close to taking over from Roy Hodgson 12 months ago, only to see Ajax block the move. Schwarzer feels Jol, who left the Dutch club in December, was definitely the right choice to take Fulham forward as they prepare for a Europa League qualifier in just three weeks.

Three more aces Redknapp wants Spurs chairman to get them to boost squad
TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp wants chairman Daniel Levy to make the three signings he feels he needs to get the club back into the Champions League. Spurs enjoyed the glamour of hosting the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan in the Champions League last season, but their poor league form towards the end of the domestic campaign meant they could only qualify for the Europa League. Redknapp has been scouring the globe for potential recruits and highlighted an experienced leader and a free-scoring striker as his two priorities. Veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel has been the only arrival at White Hart Lane so far this summer, but a deal for Brazil striker Leandro Damiao is believed to be close, while West Ham's Scott Parker and Fulham hitman Moussa Dembele have also been linked. Redknapp has lofty ambitions for Spurs and hopes Levy will sanction three "fantastic" signings to help him take the club back among Europe's elite. "I want Daniel to go out and get three fantastic players now to come in," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "You can't say that just because we didn't make the Champions League,

we're not going to improve next season. "If you do that then we're not going to get in it again. That's a fact, because you won't pass the teams that finished above you last season. "If we don't improve then they will improve. Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal — they will improve, and Manchester City... they're unbelievable. They are never going to stop improving as will Kenny Dalglish with Liverpool now. "You have to keep improving if you want to keep anywhere near those teams. I certainly feel we need three players of real quality if we are going to compete with those teams otherwise it will be very difficult." At their peak last November, Redknapp was confident Spurs could challenge for the Premier League title, but a poor run of form towards the end of the season almost cost
them the chance to play in Europe completely. Although he fears his rivals will all embark on spending sprees this summer, Redknapp insists his team can make the top four next season and even challenge for the title. "I don't see why it's not impossible to get into the Champions League again," he said. "I've said I want to win the championship with Spurs. I want to win the Premier League." Spurs striker Peter Crouch welcomed the sigining of Friedel, who made it clear that he intends to dislodge Heurelho Gomes as the firstchoice goalkeeper. "Friedel is up there with the top few goalkeepers in the Premier League so he will be a great addition," said Crouch. "I'm sure the manager hasn't finished there. He will be wanting to strengthen our side and make sure we are right up there next season.

Odemwingie's future with West Brom still hazy
WEST BROM striker Peter Odemwingie's representatives will hold fresh talks with the club over a new contract during the next few days. Odemwingie had a memorable first season for the Baggies - scoring 15 goals and playing a major role in keeping them in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has a year left of his current contract plus a 12 month option. But West Brom are keen for the player to sign an improved
long-term deal to stave off interest from other clubs. "A few days ago, I was supposed to have a meeting with the West Brom leadership on the current contract," said Odenwingie. "However, it did not take place and the meeting has been rescheduled for the next couple of days (with his representative)." Odemwingie is now on holiday in the United States and there is nothing untoward about the contract talks being
delayed. There has been intense speculation about the future of the Nigeria international since the end of the season. But the Baggies have not received an official approach. West Brom want to secure Odemwingie's services after losing the battle with Swansea for Watford striker Danny Graham who is moving to the Premier League newcomers in a £3.5 million (RM17.3m) deal.

Wenger will sign some quality players says Brady CLUB legend Liam Brady predicts Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will do "a lot of business" this summer and also believes midfielder Samir Nasri will stay at the Emirates. Arsenal saw another season which promised so much fail to deliver as their quest for honours quickly fell apart following defeat in the League Cup final to Birmingham. The Gunners have been heavily linked with Lille's Ivorian striker Gervinho and Bolton defender Gary Cahill. Brady, head of youth development at Arsenal, maintains the club will soon complete on their transfer targets. "There will be a lot of business done this year and I think we will be spending a bit more money than we have done in past seasons. I think Arsenal will spend this year," Brady told talkSPORT. However, the former Republic of Ireland midfielder maintained signing talent is never easy, given the competitive market. "Where are the players to go around everybody? It is not only the clubs in England, but also all the big European clubs are in the transfer market," he said. Nasri urged Gunners fans to ignore reports he could be on his way out. The France international has yet to agree a new deal and is said to be a target for both Manchester United and Bayern Munich. However, Brady is confident the 23-year-old will soon commit his long-term future to the Gunners. "We all rate Nasri," he said. "I believe they had extensive contractual talks but not reached a conclusion, but sometimes it takes time. "I am optimistic he will be playing with Arsenal next year." Meanwhile, Arsenal confirmed the signing of Finland Under-19 defender Carl Jenkinson from Charlton for an undisclosed fee. The Gunners have also tied England youngsters Benik Afobe and Chuks Aneke to long-term deals, along with Dutch youth

international midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup. While Arsenal fans will be expecting some bigname signings over the summer, Wenger has again kept one eye on the future with the capture of Jenkinson. The 6'1" defender, who qualifies for Finland through his mother, can play at either rightback or in central defence, an area which the Gunners were exposed last season. Charlton chief executive Stephen Kavanagh said: "This is a great move for Carl and it's difficult to stand in the way of a player when a club the size of Arsenal express interest, particularly if, like Carl, you come from an Arsenalsupporting family." Jenkinson, who has made nine appearances for Charlton after making his debut against Brentford last December, said: "I'll always be in Charlton's debt for the training they've given me since a young age. "I hope supporters will understand why I can't turn down such an opportunity, but Charlton will always have a place in my heart."

Uruguay avenge World Cup defeat against Dutch URUGUAY gained a measure of revenge for last year’s World Cup semifinal defeat by Holland as they beat the Dutch 4-3 on penalties after their friendly finished 1-1 here this morning. Uruguay’s Liverpool striker Luis Suarez opened the scoring eight minutes from time but the Dutch levelled a minute into time added on as Suarez’s clubmate Dirk Kuyt popped up to head home. However, the Dutch messed up in the penalty shootout as Robin van Persie and Eljero Elia missed their penalties and the hosts sealed victory when Alvaro Pereira made no mistake to give them victory. It ended the Oranje’s 10-match unbeaten run since losing to Spain in the World Cup final and gave Uruguay a boost just three weeks away from the start of the Copa America, which they along with Argentina hold the record of victories with 14. Uruguay, though, will be concerned by the lack of form of their iconic striker Diego Forlan, who is a long way away from the level of play he showed at last year’s World Cup which saw him awarded the Golden Ball as best player of the tournament. He was taken off in the 78th minute after a lacklustre performance. Uruguay round off their Copa preparations with another friendly against European minnows Estonia on June 23 in Montevideo. The Copa runs from July 1 to July 24 in Argentina. — AFP

‘England, here I come’ ...but which club will Lille star Gervinho play for?
LET ME GO: Gervinho leaving Lille for the Premier League — GETTYpic
IVORY COAST star Gervinho or his full name Gervais Yao Kouassi, wants to leave French champions Lille and aims to play in England despite interest from Spain. Lille manager Rudi Garcia said earlier this week they did not want to lose both Gervinho and another star in 20-year-old midfielder Eden Hazard, but conceded one could go.
Gervinho, who is being chased by Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle, now appears the most likely departure after confirming his intention to leave. The Gunners have been admiring his abilities for quite some time now. “My mind is made up, I am leaving,” Gervinho told Sky Sports yesterday. The 24-year-old, who can either play as a striker or
winger, has just one-year left on his current deal — which means Lille are likely to cash in on him this summer. “I have made my mind up. I will soon meet the club and let them know, but they understand my feelings that I want to prove myself in a top league in Europe,” he said. “My agents are moving things as I want, people know where my future lies, it is in
England.” Gervinho also wants to help Ivory Coast win the African Cup of Nations next year after he helped them qualify for the Finals last weekend. “We qualified for the African Nations Cup, we need to go for that and try to win that competition for our country, which has been suffering in the past10 years of conflict,” he said.
“Hopefully we have entered the time of peace.” For the record, the name Gervinho was given by a Brazilian coach when he was learning the tricks at ASEC Abidjan youth academy. Gervinho joined Lille from Le Mans in 2009 and has scored 25 goals from 54 matches. He has five goals from 19 matches for Ivory Coast after making his debut in 2007.
