As the city is slowly surrounded, Ukrainian soldiers fight tooth and nail to keep the Russians at bay. They too seek refuge in the Azovstal factory. For more than eighty days, residents and soldiers are trapped in there like rats. The whole world follows how the resistance in the steel plant stubbornly holds out until the final surrender to the Russians in May 2022. The images emerging from the plant’s dark corridors defy description. The Red Cross speaks of an “apocalyptic” situation.
In 82 Days in Hell, Mariupol residents, soldiers, aid workers and Ukrainian intelligence testify their time in the shelters. About hunger, fear, betrayal and warm solidarity. But also about what happened afterwards to the thousands of soldiers captured by the Russians. Some are now free, others are still in prison. 82 Days in Hell provides an intense look at one of the most dramatic events of the Ukranian war through personal testimonies.
