Chameleon is different from the rest.

As you can see, he is all white! That’s because he doesn’t like colors. Can you guess what’s in his tummy?

Chameleon only wants to eat white things. Popcorn, macaroni, whipped cream and mashed potatoes. But green veggies or red fruit? He doesn’t want those. No, no, NO!

Take this adorable picture book about positive nutrition with you to the dinner table, because thanks to this colorful story, your picky eater will learn to discover new food. Bite by bite and flap by flap.

A delightful story by Lynn Pinsart, based on a recipe by children’s dietician Vicky De Beule, with juicy illustrations by Henk van der Gugten.

MALI AND THE BUTTERFLIES

Marc de Bel & Stephanie Dehennin

It’s Mum’s birthday.

Dad has baked a big cake.

But what cute little animals suddenly come fluttering in?

Mali wants to take a closer look.

Or even grab one.

So she tries, sometimes literally tumbling from one adventure into another.

Luckily, she has good guardian angels... er, - butterflies.

Flanders’ favorite children’s author Marc de Bel and children’s and science illustrator Stephanie Dehennin join forces in a new adventure for the very young that celebrates the splendor of nature.

AND THEY LIVED

Elisabeth Lucie Baeten & Flore Deman

Once upon a time, there was a book full of wonderful stories about princesses who finally get to decide their lives for themselves. None of them desperate, silent or looking for a prince, the princesses do pretty much whatever they want in this fairy tale book.

Ariel does not want to dance ballet, but prefers water polo.

Sleeping Beauty is far too tired for an unsolicited kiss.

Did you know that Rapunzel sometimes hates her long hair quite a bit?

And Belle’s Beast might be angry for a good reason.

This book shows girls, boys and everyone who reads it that the princesses themselves have always been the heroes of the fairy tale. They star in their story, which is sometimes big and sometimes small. Not as they were, but as they could be.

AND THEY STILL LIVED

Elisabeth Lucie Baeten & Flore Deman

Did you know that Cinderella is much more than just sweet and nice?

And that Aladdin is afraid to be completely himself? Pinocchio is different from his friends, from head to toe.

And Snow White has thousands of fans, but she still feels lonely.

In this book, the stories are wonderful and real. Never does anyone say “and they lived happily ever after”.

Princes and princesses are ordinary people, each of them wishing for something very important: to be allowed to say what that think, to be honest and free. And you get to be there, on the front row.

More than 20,000 copies sold!

A groundbreaking book filled with fairy tales for a new generation of children and their parents.

MY TEAM

Senne Misplon & Julie Vangeel

Lio moved to the big city last summer. Today is the first day at their new school. With a nervous heart and a trembling tail, Lio sets off to find new friends on the football pitch. But when Lio asks to play with them, the children are confused. They are playing boys against girls, but which team does Lio belong to?

In My Team, norms about boys and girls are questioned in an original way. This book is the ideal conversation starter to talk about ideas and prejudices about gender on a child’s level.

Senne Misplon raises awareness about gender and sexual diversity from his expertise and lived experience as a transman. His mission is to make gender a story of all of us. He makes his debut as a children’s book author with My Team

Julie Vangeel studied Illustrative Design at SintLucas Antwerp. She brings to life the most diverse things with her remarkable style; from birth cards to advertising campaigns.

SNOW EVERY DAY

Amira loves snow and sports. Every day she happily zooms on her board over ridges and mountains.

During her first snowboard competition she notices as she slides down the slopes something very strange.

Fans are cheering, but not for her. Not even for her friends. That’s odd, isn’t it?

Her friends are real snowboard heroes. She rarely saw such a big difference.

It’s not fair, but look: according to some, girls and boys are not the same at all. Amir and her friends therefore come up with a plan, because everyone knows that things cannot continue like this.

THE LONELIEST WHALE IN THE WORLD

Lilja lives in a lighthouse at the top of the world. She is the keeper of the northern lights. Her daddy is often away. He measures and weighs the water, counts the fish, animals and plants, and looks for wonders at sea. After each voyage, he gives Lilja a shell. Her collection grows bigger and bigger. One day, daddy tells her about a whale that always swims on his own. Other whales cannot hear his song and so they don’t see him as one of them.

When Lilja stays home alone again, it is quiet in the lighthouse. Until suddenly a song sounds from one of the shells. Is it the whale and is he singing to Lilja?

This classic is an ode to happiness and the power of imagination.

Kim Crabeels writes texts for picture books, bedtime stories, trivia and audio books for children aged four to fourteen. But adults love her upbeat style with a sensitive twist as well. With her stories, Kim warms the hearts of young and old. She also works as a cultural programmer for young audiences in Leuven: a fascinating cross-pollination of jobs in which fantasy and children always play the leading roles.

Sebastiaan Van Doninck grew up in a foster home, on his parents’ farm. He worked on numerous illustrated picture books that have been translated in more than 26 countries. He has won the Boon Audience Award twice, among other awards. In recent years, he has been using autonomous practice more as a breeding ground for paintings, drawings, graphics and ceramics.

A SMALL WORLD HISTORY IN 100 BIG DATES

Why did Cleopatra hide in a carpet and did Alexander the Great sit in a tent crying? How did Marco Polo end up in prison and Joan of Arc at the stake? How does the Great Wall of China differ from the one in Berlin?

Roll up your sleeves, pick a year from this book and get ready to be surprised. You might know what happened in 1492 or 1789, but who made the most difficult decision of their life in 1633? Travel from the hanging gardens of Babylon to the temples of Angkor Wat and from the dark ages of the Crusades to the Age of Enlightenment. Along the way, you’ll meet well-known people such as Julius Caesar or Napoleon, and meet fascinating ones like Ana Nzinga and Manuele Sáenz. The adventure begins with Lucy learning to walk on two legs and ends when Greta Thunberg takes the floor at the climate summit.

A small world history in 100 big dates is more than just a historical fact book. Barbara De Munnynck tells real stories – with a tantalizing beginning and a clear punchline. Isabelle Geeraerts connects the stories in a pleasant way, and the full-page, popping illustrations make it complete.

This history of the world is not a dull list of important dates. It’s a treasure chest filled with wonderful tales.

WHAT REALLY WORKS FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE HIGHLY ANXIOUS

Wendy de Pree & Inge Voets

This is a practical guide in which you discover what anxiety can do to children and to you, the ten things these children need the most, and how you can support and guide them in these needs. The book offers concrete tools and simple strategies, so that as a (grand)parent, teacher, therapist, or counsellor, you can find out what really helps the child to be more (self-)confident in life.

The child’s relationship with the adult is the main focus, because children learn primarily by imitation and experience. By investing in the connection, tranquility and your own relationship with fear, the child will feel free to face its own fears. It can then move forward towards a meaningful life, with its fear under control.

What Really Works aims to support parents, teachers, therapists, … in addressing socio-emotional issues and challenges with children. Each guide: – starts from a clear description of the issue or challenge (e.g. ADHD, AUTISM, being highly gifted or very anxious), – identifies the 10 most important needs of a child with this challenge, – shows you how to recognize these needs in behavior, – and offers concrete tools and strategies for dealing with these challenges.

THE CHRISTIE MURDERS

Dominique Biebau

In the dozing village of Moledale, anything rarely happens. That changes when the local library receives some anonymous packages containing books by British author Agatha Christie. What at first seems like the work of a lame prankster soon becomes bitterly serious when crimes occur in the village, that undeniably have something to do with the books.

The ladies of Reading Club With Thrilling Fingers throw themselves onto the case. Can they prevent deaths?

The Christie Murders is an ingenious crime novel with a big nod to the Queen of Crime.

“A successful homage to Agatha Christie. The seemingly so loosely composed story is cunningly crafted.”
– DE VOLKSKRANT
“Biebau writes witty, playful and very recognizable.”
– DE STANDAARD

Dominique Biebau has well earned his place in the Dutchlanguage thriller world. With Russian for Beginners, he won both the Knack Hercule Poirot Prize 2019 and the Gouden Strop 2020. His most recent book The Mole Party was also critically acclaimed and landed on numerous shortlists.

I GO TO THE SHEEP

Marieke De Maré

This is a story about fathers, mothers, and children, but above all and especially about five people.

One of them often goes to the sheep, another one fights insects, another one makes images of wax. Someone lays dead, and another one looks at nothing.

In everything they do, a question pops up that is never asked out loud. Why do they feel so inseparable from one another, and most of all they want to be able to tell others: “We’re doing fine.”

I Go to the Sheep is about silence, watching, holding on and letting go. And also about loving to live. But how do you do that again?

“What one cannot talk about, one must remain silent about. With Marieke De Maré, that silence just becomes very talkative.”

★★★★ – DE

STANDAARD
“Just like in her debut, Marieke De Maré digs into the sadness deep within her characters with a great deal of relatable humor.” ★★★★ – KNACK

Marieke De Maré invents, writes and narrates. She has the ability to see beauty in the most vulnerable moments and loves to share it with others. In 2020, she debuted with the novel Hump, which received raving reviews. I Go to the Sheep is her second novel.

HONEYEATER

Every single day, Turkish-Belgian Sibel deliberately misses her flight home from Istanbul Airport. She does not feel truly at home in either country and wants above all to get to grips with the memories of her dead Turkish father and rediscover her language. She kills time by rigorously observing other passengers or caring for a stray sniffer dog. Sibel is under observation herself, too, by security man Ömer, who follows her on his screens. He decides to protect her, as a father might.

Then Sibel meets Wernicke, a pilot as displaced as she is, who loses his job, his language and his health. Sibel, Ömer and Wernicke all live illegally at the airport. They have their own baggage and seem incapable of real communication. A snowstorm extends their awkward interaction for a while, but ultimately their parting is inescapable.

“The atmosphere is vaguely reminiscent of Ben Lerner, Samuel Beckett and also the early Peter Handke.”

Tulin Erkan grew up in Ostend with a French-speaking mother and an English-speaking grandmother. She spent her summers with her father in Turkey. When people describe her as half, she feels mostly double. In her debut Honey-eater, she virtuosically strings together language and memory into a condensed whole.

OVEN DISHES

Wim Ballieu

Oven dishes are the gods of comfort food. They are a nostalgic feast for your taste buds and food for the soul. For granny’s cuisine survives all culinary hypes and is invincible in its simplicity. (And in its bechamel sauce.) In this book, Wim Ballieu collects 60 favourite oven dishes. Vegetarian, or with meat or fish, but above all: packed with vegetables. Using local ingredients, he creates recipes for every season. Because anyone who thinks you can only eat casseroles in winter is sorely mistaken (and is missing a lot in life).

EVEN MORE OVEN DISHES

Wim Ballieu

A casserole a day keeps the doctor away. That’s what chef Wim Ballieu thinks. It doesn’t always have to be the classic chicory rolls (although there’s nothing wrong with that either), because with a handful of fresh vegetables and the occasional fish or meat, you can put a bowl of delicious food on the table in no time. Easy to make, even easier to wash up!

In this book, Wim Ballieu collects his 60 favorite casseroles. Vegetarian, with meat or fish, and above all: packed with vegetables. With ingredients from home, he creates recipes for every season. Want to bet that the plates are empty?

Wim Ballieu is a chef, entrepreneur and TV maker. He grew up in his parents’ butcher’s shop, but the butcher’s son wanted to become a chef and an entrepreneur. Today, he runs the successful Balls & Glory chain, presents Bal National on Belgian njam! TV channel and has just launched his latest concept Wim’s Deli, which focuses on the classic casserole.

DELICIOUSLY SIMPLE

Did you know that, on average, it takes half an hour for a takeaway to arrive at your home? And that in that same amount of time you can perfectly put something delicious on the table yourself? Life seems to be getting busier and busier and ready meals and take-away have never been so popular.

With this book, foodie Manon Van Aerschot wants to show that things can be done differently. She shows you easy-to-prepare dishes that challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, but for which all the ingredients can be found in your regular supermarket. Less is more, without sacrificing freshness and taste.

TRAYBAKES

Quick and healthy cooking on the griddle

Do you also want to save time in the kitchen? Less stress and especially less dishes? Then let yourself be surprised by these traybakes, or: dishes that you prepare entirely on one baking tray or in one oven dish. Traybakes are the ideal solution for those who don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. You cut the ingredients, mix them with some oil or a sauce, flavor them with spices and ... ready! The oven does all the work. No fuss, hardly any dishes and you get those golden brown toasted edges for free!

Stefanie Baert bundles more than 60 recipes for surprising and varied traybakes for every moment of the day: from a deliciously sweet breakfast to nutritious snacks, and from quick lunches to a dish full of comfort food.

GRAND INTERIORS

Geoffroy Van Hulle

Grand Interiors is an immersive ‘grand tour’ of the grandiose interiors of Geoffroy Van Hulle. The Belgian decorator lets us have a look inside exuberant private homes, from Knokke to New York.

In his unpretentious interiors, he sprinkles generously with colors, patterns and exoticism. “Nowhere in my interiors is the distance to a bookcase, fireplace or bar cabinet more than five steps”, he says. With the bravado of his teachers Cecil Beaton and David Hicks, he designs dazzling sets for everyday theatres.

Geoffroy Van Hulle is a decorator. Furnishings by his hand can be found from Paris and Amsterdam to New York. His style is maximalist and cosmopolitan. He does everything guided on intuition. Feeling decides. Sense of beauty. Sense of harmony. Sense of grandeur. As he himself puts it: “Pure simplicity is a very complicated matter.”

WITH KAFKA IN BERLIN

With Franz Kafka in the minefield that is Berlin.

Germany is plagued by political violence and whooping inflation when Franz Kafka settles in Berlin in late September 1923. In the city of his dreams, he aspires to build an independent writing life. Although his tuberculosis exhausts him, the 40-year-old Kafka dismisses his bachelorhood to live happily with his new great love, the liberated East Jewish Dora Diamant.

Yet Kafka’s break-up with Prague, the city that is a metaphor for everything that stands in the way of his emancipation, is not total. Underneath, the confrontation with his tyrannical father, who does not understand his son’s writing, continues unabated. No wonder power is the theme that dominates Kafka’s entire oeuvre.

With Kafka in Berlin offers a special look into the material and intellectual problems Kafka and Dora had to face at the three Berlin addresses where they lived. Which German publishers does he want to work with? What does the magic of Berlin consist of? And whether his parents can’t get him the Prager Tagblatt instead of sending him soap?

Piet de Moor is a journalist, publicist and author of novels and essays. Among other things, he wrote the essayistic reportage book Twilight. The author lives and works in Berlin.

1942

Herman Van Goethem

1942 is a turning point in World War II. From November on the Nazis are suffering heavy losses. All over the West, from London to Washington, governments and their civil servants are shifting policies. Herman Van Goethem has brought this crucial year back to life. He has written a compelling chronicle of everyday life in Antwerp, Belgium.

This book is more than a reconstruction of a forgotten war year. It offers a new way to elucidate World War II, which reaches far beyond the pitch-black year of 1942. Set against this startling background, the author recounts his search for the past, and for the acceptance and denial of what came to pass.

PAUL VAN OSTAIJEN

Matthijs de Ridder

An impressive biographical source, a lucid cultural history and, above all, a tribute to the poet who wanted to change the world. Paul van Ostaijen’s life was over in a flash. He was barely thirty-two when he died all alone in a small Walloon sanatorium in 1928. A century on, his oeuvre still captures people’s imagination. Paul van Ostaijen drove Dutch literature almost singlehandedly into the fast and extremely violent twentieth century. He tried to reinvent every genre he tackled. Every book he started had to be totally different from what already existed. This uncompromising attitude did not make his life easy, but it turned him into one of the most beloved poets of Dutch literature. In this first full-fledged biography, Matthijs de Ridder brings ‘zot polleken’ to life. With great enthusiasm and an eye for historical detail, De Ridder tells the compelling story of a life that crossed a few pivotal moments in history. During his years of research, Matthijs de Ridder collected a lot of new material. He also found a youthful impetus for the novel Bob and the unknown grotesque ‘Ecce Europa’, which appears here for the first time.

THE SEVENTIES

Reconstruction of an eventful decade Frank Van Laeken

The 1970s were directional, both for those who were young then and for those with both feet in the present. Cold War. Terrorism. Energy crisis. Climate concerns. Abortion. Topics then and now.

In addition, there were unique events. The first state reform was carried out. Northern Ireland had its Bloody Sunday. In America, Nixon resigned after the Watergate Scandal. The Beatles and The Bee Gees dominated the charts. The Flemish watched massive amounts of Dutch television. Rock Werchter was organized for the first time. Belgian soccer clubs were (almost) top of the league in Europe.

Through a detailed reconstruction of what happened then (and how it was reported in our media at the time), Frank Van Laeken paints an overall picture of a decade that was at least as fascinating as the much vaunted sixties. Not an academic account or historical treatise, but a book that lives, as if it were 1970 again.

US, ROMANY

A rare visit to a closed world

Margot Vanderstraeten

Everyone has an opinion about the Romany. No one knows them.

Us, Romany puts the door of this closed and excluded community ajar based on a hundred or so short and long personal encounters. What we see is at times poignant, shocking and harrowing, and at other times disconcerting, hopeful and full of joy and humorous. What we find is always a mirror.

Margot Vanderstraeten is writer and journalist. Of her ten books, Mazzel tov, which is an insight into the daily life of the - also very closed - Orthodox Jewish community, was an international success. It appeared in eight languages and had reprints in all countries. In Belgium and the Netherlands more than 65,000 copies are sold. Mazzel tov ’s successor, Minjan, has so far appeared in Hungarian, Polish, Czech and Brazilian-Portuguese.

82 DAYS IN HELL

Joanie de Rijke & Jasper Christiaens

February 24, 2022, one o’clock in the morning.

On the eastern side of Mariupol, loud explosions sound. Even before Putin officially announces his “special operation” in Ukraine, Russian military forces launch the attack on the strategic port city on the Sea of Azov.

In the days and weeks that follow, thousands of residents flee to the shelters of steel and blast furnace company Azovstal, the beating heart of Mariupol. As the city is slowly surrounded, Ukrainian soldiers fight tooth and nail to keep the Russians at bay. They too seek refuge in the Azovstal factory. For more than eighty days, residents and soldiers are trapped in there like rats. The whole world follows how the resistance in the steel plant stubbornly holds out until the final surrender to the Russians in May 2022. The images emerging from the plant’s dark corridors defy description. The Red Cross speaks of an “apocalyptic” situation.

In 82 Days in Hell, Mariupol residents, soldiers, aid workers and Ukrainian intelligence testify their time in the shelters. About hunger, fear, betrayal and warm solidarity. But also about what happened afterwards to the thousands of soldiers captured by the Russians. Some are now free, others are still in prison. 82 Days in Hell provides an intense look at one of the most dramatic events of the Ukranian war through personal testimonies.

Joanie de Rijke has worked as a reporter in war zones many times. She published articles and books about her experiences.

Jasper Christiaens is a director with a penchant for human stories and emotions floating beneath the surface. Bitten by war journalism, he wants to tell the stories of war victims himself. Together with Joanie de Rijke, he travels to Ukraine to record the testimonies of Azovstal survivors.

OUR WAR TOO: DIARY FROM UKRAINE

When everyone left Kiev right after the Russian invasion, he went there. As a producer for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), he would be in charge of the logistical tasks in Ukraine. That was the plan: Bruno Beeckman as the man behind the scenes of war reporting. But when he first arrived in Kiev in late February, almost all journalists were already gone. So he did it himself and, in his calm and thoughtful voice, went to tell the stories from the war front.

Bruno Beeckman has been going to war fronts for almost thirty years, wherever that front may be: from Afghanistan and Iraq, over Chechnya and Mali, to Syria and Libya. But this war is different. For him, and for the world. What is truly at stake, is autocracy versus democracy. Are we willing to fight for our democratic values? For Beeckman, it is clear: this is our war, too. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, he has been in Ukraine for over 250 days. This is his war diary.

A unique war diary

Bruno Beeckman is an EnglishRussian translator and interpreter. In 1991 he moved to Moscow where he would stay for eleven years. With his wife and their three children, he’s lived in Thessaloniki, Geneva and Washinton D.C. Since 1993, Beeckman has been working as a freelance producer and reporter and he can be seen on Belgian news broadcasts, as well as on public television in France, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. He has covered numerous wars and conflicts. Beeckman prefers to call himself a peace journalist and a desperate optimist.

FIGHTING FOR LOVE

An unconventional take on conflict and partner violence

People who have in some way experienced escalating conflict and partner violence find themselves with recurring questions. How is it that we love each other so much but hurt each other so much at the same time? Is there something wrong with me? What about the children? Will this ever pass? This book answers seven recurring questions from a remarkable angle. It shows that violence and love can be two sides of the same coin.

Out-of-control quarrels and violence scare us. They mask the inner pain of love behind a harsh exterior. Violence arises from tension that grows between two people when they lose the safe connection with each other. This book describes this intense issue from the inside and provides tools to not only look at it differently, but to deal with it in a different way.

One in four adults will experience partner violence in their lifetime. This book brings the experiences of these couples into conflict. It is a story little told, but true for the majority of these couples.

A story of longing, powerlessness, love and loss. For anyone who faces tension, conflict and escalation in couples from near or far.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF TOTALITARIANISM

In The Psychology of Totalitarianism, world-renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet deconstructs the societal conditions that allow this collective psychosis to take hold. By looking at our current situation and identifying the phenomenon of “mass formation” a type of collective hypnosis he clearly illustrates how close we are to surrendering to totalitarian regimes.

With detailed analyses, examples, and results from years of research, Desmet lays out the steps that lead toward mass formation.

In addition to clear psychological analysis and building on Hannah Arendt’s essential work on totalitarianism, The Origins of Totalitarianism Desmet offers a sharp critique of the cultural “groupthink” that existed prior to the pandemic and advanced during the COVID crisis. He cautions against the dangers of our current societal landscape, media consumption, and reliance on manipulative technologies and then offers simple solutions both individual and collective to prevent the willing sacrifice of our freedoms.

“Mattias Desmet’s [theory of mass formation hypnosis] is great… Once I kind of started to look for it, I saw it everywhere.” – Eric Clapton

“Mattias desmet’s theory of mass formation is the most important lens through which we can understand the coV id -19 pandemic and the social aberrations that accompanied it. in The Psychology of Totalitarianism, desmet explains how and why people will willingly give up their freedom, how the masses can give rise to a totalitarian leader, and – most importantly – how we can resist these phenomena and maintain our common humanity. This is the most important book of 2022.”

THE LEADER. THAT’S US.

This is a book full of practical wisdom for anyone who cares about themselves, the people around them and the world. In short, for leaders. Because contrary to what many people think, leadership is an everyday thing. Everyone is a leader in some way, not just those with a lot of power or those who are at the top of the chain of command. The conductor on the train is a leader. The young person who curbs the nuisance of a group of friends in the park. The daughter who calls a family council. The classroom teacher. The tour guide. The steward in the soccer stands. The influencer on social media... They all show leadership.

The Leader. That’s Us. is the result of 15 years of research and collaboration with leaders in numerous contexts. It is also the result of 58 years of life experience. That combination makes the insights in this book practical and lived-in. They are lighthearted, accessible and anything but superficial. Useful insights, that are divided into five areas: leading yourself, leading people, leading groups, leading change, leading life.
