Editorial
Hello all, happy 2017! Hope everyone had a good end of year break. We had a challenging 2016 and there were a lot of good yet difficult moments for our brand and products. Nonetheless, we feel accomplished when it comes to the positive response and feedback given by our customers through marketing events, promotions and social media. We are grateful to our distribution partners and channels that have supported us throughout last year and in giving us the opportunity to showcase and highlight the Pelikan products particularly during the Back to School periods. The brand gained better visibility and awareness amongst consumers during the promotional seasons. Many retailers including our own Pelikan Store at The Gardens Mall organized events for their customers to encourage them to try out our products, particularly newly launched stationery such as the Brush Marker 12 colours. The art classes organised at Pelikan Store were also instrumental in highlighting the brand and our products to the school children as well as the bookfairs, colouring contests and art demonstrations conducted by our retail partners. We hope to grow the art class from a small humble initiative for school children to partake in art using Pelikan products to a become a bigger movement of our marketing strategy. Another major highlight for 2016 was our online venture. Both our Facebook and Instagram pages are gaining popularity steadily with almost daily increase of followers. We get more and more interactions and queries through these pages, a sure sign that the we are reaching the right audience through them. In addition to this, we are slowly building up relationship with bloggers
and social media practitioners, especially ones that focus on art and creative lifestyle. Promoting our products through these bloggers has been very effective especially in the case of promoting our new Brush Markers. This is definitely something we want to explore more and we will work with more social media and online influencers in 2017. Last but not least, the Pelikan Store Online which was launched in November 2016 is proving to be a great buying channel for our customers who find it hard to purchase our product elsewhere. We have received orders from all over Malaysia, and we are encouraged by positive reaction by customers to the online promotions. We have bigger plans for 2017 to build our online store to be the main website portal for our Pelikan customers and we hope to engage more customers through this channel. Moving on to 2017, we are excited about the big conclusion of our Back to School Best Friends Colouring contest which offers great cash prizes and cool gadgets as the reward. The first stage of the contest will be closed soon on 31 January 2017, and right now we are receiving a flood of the last minute entries. There were so many amazing and creative colouring contests sheets received, so the judging will be really tough and interesting! The second stage is the big finale in March where the shortlisted participants will battle it out live to win the prizes. More updates on this will be shared soon so keep following us for all the latest news! Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year 2017. May the year of the Fire Rooster give you abundant health, wealth and happiness! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Yours sincerely,

Bloggers and social media practitioners are key to our marketing plans for 2017. We want to work closely with them so it is important to build a good relationship. That is why the Pelikan Marketing team jumped at the chance to visit the studio of one of the premier creative lifestyle bloggers, The Artsy Craftsy. On 17 January, we were invited by the founder of The Artsy Craftsy, Ms Shia Lynn, to visit her studio at Isola Subang Jaya, where she conducts her classes and work on her art pieces. After being shown around the studio, we sat down to discuss the possibility of further working together in the future. It was a positive discussion, we can’t reveal the details yet but we are really excited at what’s in store for us!

One of the ways to raise awareness on cancer is to share stories of cancer survivors. At World Cancer Day website, they compiled remarkable stories of cancer survivors so others can read and learn as much as possible about fighting the disease. Here’s one of the stories that were shared by the survivors themselves.
thought we would both make it. My family, my father and my girlfriend were a incredible support for us. There were more and more radiations, chemotherapies and surgeries... to make it short: it was a hard time, but we kept carrying on. I think I realised too late that things were getting worse for my mother.... she always cared about me, and didn’t talk too much about her condition. She got sicker and the tumors kept growing... while mine was in a “stable” condition, under maintenance treatment.
Cancer Survivors’ Stories - Benjamin, Germany
My name is Benjamin, I’m 27 years old and I live in a small town in the south of Germany. Until college time, my life was pretty usual. I spent lots of time studying, so I didn’t wonder why I was getting sleepy and powerless. Suddenly some friends started asking why I was so pale - I had not noticed the change myself. Things got serious, when I noticed that I lost a lot of weight. So I went to the doctor a few times. Then there was this call one morning - my blood values were very bad, and I should go to a specialist quickly. Up to this time, they thought it could be an IBD or something. So there were further blood tests, a colonoscopy, a CT and...on May 18th 2010, the diagnosis: advanced colorectal cancer, aged 20! I can’t describe exactly what feelings there were... I can’t quite remember, I suppressed a lot of stuff. The time between the diagnosis and the first surgery was a time full of tests and examination, conversations with doctors and nurses, tears and fear, despair and uncertainty. I got a combined radiation and chemotherapy in preparation for the surgery. But things even got worse. My mom got the same diagnosis, while I was in treatment. No words can describe this. It was just incredibly terrible. I’ve no idea how my father keep things going.
And then, in 2013, there was this call from my father, that mom was coming home - that was her biggest wish. To be at home with the family. Everything was arranged, but it wouldn’t be necessary...She died on Mother’s Day 2013. I can’t clearly say, if I can handle it yet, in 2017. Looking back, there is so much, I should have asked her, should have talked with her about. The farewell was way too early. Around this time, my doctors told me, that I was incurable. Not that I’ll die soon, as chemo works very good under this circumstances. I feel quite fine, but some day, the cancer will proceed. Many things have changed since then. But some haven’t. Surprisingly, my cancer still remains quiet. I responded to the colostomy well, and I got also an urostomy after another surgery - and that’s the best choice they could make - to avoid being incontinent. Late 2013, I started to read a lot of stories of other young people battling with cancer. I decided to write about my journey and my life with cancer and all of its consequences. I’ve met many younger people with similar experience: other bloggers, activists and supporters. And, I got some experiences with telling my story to magazines, newspapers, websites and even tv-shows. I am very active in social media and try to help as many other patients I can. I fight for better acceptance of ostomys. I fight for more education about colon cancer and early detection, especially for younger people. I fight for connecting young people dealing with the same issues of severe diseases.
So time goes by... my mum was operated on and myself too. She came out early from the hospital: the cancer had spread, there was further chemo needed. In my case, they could just remove the whole tumor - I was very lucky. But I got an ostomy - something I’d never heard of before.
I want to be a voice of young cancer patients and tell them that they are not alone, and they shall not lose hope! And that life can be beautiful, even with a deadly disease!
Spring 2011: I finished first treatment.... “cured” they said. I couldn’t believe it was this “easy”. But my mom was still fighting.
I am Cancelling Cancer You can. We can.
In October 2011, there was a recurrence. It felt even worse then the first diagnosis, because I knew what it meant nothing good. So, for quite some time, me and my mother went to the same chemotherapy each week. For a long time, we

01 | Herlitz Schoolbag Used For New – Visit to Rumah Kids On 5th January 2017, Pelikan Malaysia team visited the children of Rumah Kids at their home on Jalan Dato Dollah, Klang. It was great seeing all the children again; this was our second visit as the first being in March last year at their home in USJ 1, Subang Jaya (temporarily under renovation). Last year, we were there to present part of the proceeds collected from an internal Pelikan staff sale held during the Christmas celebration. This time, we were there as part of the Pelikan Store’s herlitz Schoolbag Used For New programme. Herlitz’s Schoolbag Used For New is a programme where customers donated their used bags to charity through Pelikan Store and in return, the customers were given a 30% discount voucher to purchase a new herlitz schoolbag at the Pelikan Store. The programme was originally planned for the month of August 2016 but due to the overwhelming response, we extended the programme until 31 October 2016. In the end, we collected over 50 bags, much more than what we expected! So we selected the best of the bags and made our way to Rumah Kids at Klang. Our arrival was greeted with big smiling faces and helping hands to carry all of the stuff we brought with us to their home. We were certainly made to feel very welcomed by the children and the wonderful staff of Rumah Kids. Lead by the Executive Officer of Rumah Kids Mr David Janssen, we were introduced to everyone as we explained the purpose of our visit and gave a brief introduction of the herlitz’s Schoolbag Used For New programme. As scheduled, the first activity of the day was a colouring session with all the children. The main purpose of our visit may have been to present the bags we collected, but the real highlight of the day was certainly this session - we had so much fun spending time with all the children! It was just a simple colouring activity, some colouring sheets with
some colouring tools, but what a brilliant time it was! We did some quality colouring together and at the same time got to know each other better. The colouring session was the perfect icebreaker (though admittedly with these friendly and often cheeky children, there wasn’t too much ice to break) and halfway through the session we were laughing and joking freely. Before we knew it, the colouring session was over. Cleaning up was a breeze, the older children with the help of the little ones responsibly made sure everything was cleared and back to how it was before the colouring session. It was time to present our contribution. The children were all first given goodie bags with lots of school stationery supplies from Pelikan Malaysia. Next, Mr David Janssen was presented with a cheque amounted to RM1,000 (raised from Pelikan staff during the internal Christmas sale) and the bags donated from the herlitz Schoolbag Used For New programme. We received some really good bags from this programme so thank you to those who donated, you have brought cheer to these wonderful children. Like all good things, our visit to Rumah Kids had to end. A quick photo session marked the end of the day. It was a short visit but the smiles and happy faces of the children made it a great experience for us. Until next time!
