activities. The store opening is just the start for a busy year end period for us and the official launching of the store will be next. PASB will also be participating in 3 big education-related fairs in the next 3 months and last but not least our “Back to School season” is kicking off in October. There are also a lot of new products that we will be launching in the last quarter and we are excited to unveil them in our channels. The preparations for these marketing events and Back to School launches are being organised at the same time by the team and to borrow from our National Day theme, the #sehatisejiwa spirit is well and alive in Pelikan. So thank you all for your kind support and encouragement!

Our plan to promote the Pelikan Store is underway. Other than promoting the store through our Facebook page, we advertised it in two magazines, The Expat and Time Out Malaysia Kids for September issues. There are more advertisements planned especially when we get nearer to the launch date which is scheduled to be sometime in October so watch this space!

Living with haze, this is the sad reality of today’s world. There used to be only two certainties in life, death & taxes but now we need to add haze to the list. So how do we deal with this haze problem? We can’t seem to stop it so what we can do is learn how to live with it. Read on to learn more!
Do you really need the N95 mask?
4. Use an N95 face mask Haze is caused by tiny particulates suspended in the air, known as PM10 (10 referring to the size of the particulate matter which is 10 microns). Masks such as the N95 mask contain a special filter and are designed to keep this particulate matter out. Dr Izuan Ismail advises that ‘generally, surgical masks and 3-ply masks are much less efficient in filtering fine particles’ as they are not designed to specifically keep out particle matter that small. Keep in mind however, that the N95 masks are not approved for use on children so they should still be kept indoors as much as possible.
5 Ways To Beat The Haze The haze has made a noticeable and unwelcome comeback, smothering the city with a density that is hard to look at and harder yet to breathe through. Peaking at a reading of 119 this week on the AQI (Air Quality Index) and pushing it into the ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ category, there is certainly much to be desired when it comes to our air quality in Malaysia. What can you do to lessen its impact on you? Read on to find out. 1. Monitor the AQI or API Important if you are particularly sensitive to air pollution, these are great tools for determining the potential impact the air on any given day will have on you. Knowing what the reading is for the day can help you establish how much time you should spend outside and whether or not you need to take extra steps to deal with the haze. 2. Stay indoors when and where possible If you don’t need to go out, stay put. This rings true especially for those who are vulnerable to health complications from the haze, such as children and the elderly. Respiratory specialist Dr Izuan Ismail says that ‘even healthy people can suffer from irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, causing coughing and sneezing.’ In worse cases, ‘breathing an excess of these particles can increase a person’s risk of developing viral and bacterial infections, as well as heart and lung diseases.’ Doesn’t sound like something you want to be exposed to unnecessarily, does it? 3. Reduce your outdoor physical activity when the air quality is hazy and unhealthy As a follow on from above, if you can’t walk in it without feeling irritation in your throat or eyes, you certainly shouldn’t be running in it. Head to the gym or opt for indoor exercises instead – like this total body workout from Men’s Health, or this grueling lunge one. There are also plenty of great fitness gurus to follow on social media who post fitness vids for all fitness levels.
5. Be prepared and stay well hydrated If you are on any lung medication or are an asthmatic, ensure you’ve prepped your meds and always have those and your inhaler on you. Having a bottle of water handy will also go a long way in keeping you well hydrated and mitigating irritation in your lungs, sinus and throat. If you wear contacts, it might be wise to wear spectacles instead as contacts can dry your eyes out; coupled with the haze, they could make for a really irritating combination. To combat this, carry some preservative free eye drops to soothe your eyes when they feel parched and itchy. This article was featured in Women’s Health.com. With the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Malaysia recently reaching way above the “hazardous” levels in Muar and Ledang districts, so bad that the government has declared a “haze emergency”, many people are rushing to buy N95 masks to protect themselves against the haze. However, Malaysians need to remain calm and rational in this dire situation. Therefore, here are some common misconceptions that should be cleared regarding the haze in Malaysia: 1. Ordinary surgical masks does not serve any protection so don’t go rushing for them. 2. N95 is useful but only if it is of the right size and worn in a proper manner to be effective. 3. Short term exposure to the haze is not going to lead to bodily harm unless you belong to the vulnerable group with chest diseases, young ones or the elderly. Asthmatic patients should continue medications during this period and seek medical attention early if feeling unwell. 4. Only those who needs to be outdoors for long periods of time need to wear the N95 masks. If you are sitting in an air-conditioned office, there is no real need to wear one. Majority of people therefore do not need to be wearing N95 masks. 5. Short term exposure will not cause cancers. The best thing to do is to stay indoors with air-conditioning and seek medical attention early. Stay calm and look out for those around us. Let’s not go into panic buying of N95 masks!
