Believe it or not, women are very capable of and enjoy casual relationships, as long as there are no gray areas. -Faye Brennan

This may come as a shock to a lot of guys, but girls think about sex. A lot. Heck, we crave it – and when we go lengthy times without it, it drives us nuts. So, if we don’t have anyone special in our lives at the moment, we may be just as psyched as guys to travel down the road of casually hooking up with someone. By casual, I mean no commitment, no lovey dovey dates or phone calls, just straightforward, consistent sex with someone. I know, shocking. But how women approach casual hookups may be a little different than how guys approach them. Most women see it as a strictly physical thing – a fun means to an end that doesn’t require batteries and actually talks back (ok, that's a bit harsh). Nine times out of ten, we genuinely want to keep it this way, and avoid the confusing, gray areas that come with real relationships. Men may find it hard to believe, but women with the right intentions really do enter casual hookups to just keep things light, fun, and sexy. We like to use Samantha Jones as inspiration. In order to keep the casual hookup separate from a real relationship, we expect guys to follow a certain set of unspoken, yet extremely important rules. These are all common sense guidelines that keep the sex carefree and string-free. If he breaks these rules, he confuses the sh** out of us, and then the ―casual‖ part flies out the window and suddenly, we don’t know what we’ve gotten ourselves into. Since no guy (or girl) entering a casual hookup wants that, here are the rules we expect the guy to follow: 1. Don’t call or text unless it’s to hookup. We don’t want to hear how your day was or worry about your big work deal that just fell through, because we have enough to worry about in our own lives. The reason a casual hookup is so liberating for most women is because we don’t feel the need—at all—to take care of the guy and his problems. He’s not a boyfriend, he’s just the guy we roll around in the sheets with from time to time. The only moment we should be thinking about him is when it’s 1 a.m. on a Friday, we’re wearing our hot lingerie underneath our dress and have had one too many martinis.

2. Be

up

front

and

honest.

Casual hookups involve no commitment, which means both parties are allowed to see other people. However, they should be very up front and honest about it, especially if they’re also sleeping with these people. This is a health issue, and a serious one at that! Women expect that if our casual hookup is sleeping around, he will tell us up front so that we can make up our own minds whether or not that’s cool with us. We’re not going to get all jealous, psycho-girlfriendy on him, so there’s no reason for him to lie or omit this really important information.

3. Don’t

do

coupley

things.

In order for a casual hookup to truly work, dates and hanging out outside the bedroom are big no-nos. If we’re at a party with a bunch of mutual friends, or if it’s a quick drink at the bar before heading back to his place, then fine. Other than that, women do not want to be taken out to dinner or spend significant one-on-one time with their hookup because it gets really confusing, really fast. Immediately, thoughts come to mind such as, ―Is he developing feelings for me? Does he want to try to date me now?‖ etc. Trust us when we say we do NOT want to enter this gray area.

Page 10

4. Be respectful. Yes, this relationship is based around sex – a very primal, physical act. However, both the guy and the girl in the casual relationship should treat each other with respect. This takes some feeling out in the beginning of what’s okay, not okay for each person (No, it’s not okay for you to leave the nanosecond you finish), and then to be mindful of these preferences. Also, the amount of effort being put into the casual hookup should be equal unless otherwise specified. If we’re always making the treck to his place and arriving an hour late to work every Wednesday, we’re going to start resenting him, and vice versa. 5. Check the emotions at the door. Which brings us to the last rule: resentment is an emotion, and there is no room for emotions in a casual hookup. It’s harsh, and seems a bit unnatural to some, but it’s true. This is probably the most difficult part about these situations, because over time, you can’t help if you develop feelings. That’s why it’s important to address these feelings (out loud) as soon as they crop up in order to avoid one helluva mess. This tends to be the reason why not all people are cut out for casual hookups – the chemicals that get released during sex, including oxytocin and phenylethylamine, make it hard to not feel emotionally connected to a sexual partner.

But, that's the name of the game, folks! It's called "casual" for a reason – and, as long as the guy follows these rules, casual it will stay!

Where are all the Good men?

I know many guys are probably saying. “Yo, I’m right here,” but where have you been all MY life? On a serious note though, I hear women complaining time after time that there’s a shortage of good men out there. Yes studies, and censuses have shown us that indeed there are more women than men out there, it doesn’t mean that there’s a shortage LADIES! In order for you to get a good man, you have to be a good woman as well! You can’t just “ole talk” with friends all the time and keep saying there aren’t any good ones, and at the same time don’t ever settle for less than your worth, this applies to the men also. If you portray yourself in a certain way, some men instantly brand you in a category, example: wife material, young and naïve, slutty etc. It is your responsibility as a woman to give yourself the same respect that you will expect from a man. No one’s saying not to look sexy, but Ladies there’s a fine line between being sexy, and selling something, catch my drift? When you as an individual can learn to respect you and your body, it will be noticed by any man. Oh and one more thing Low self esteem is a BIG turn off for any man! cept you no matter what, flaws and all! This part right here is for all you ladies who are waiting on “prince charming” WAKE UP! Your life is not a fairy tale so stop trying to live by these silly slogans we have learnt as little girls! Sometimes we as women set these high standards that not even the best man on the earth can fulfill (that’s if the best man on earth exists). Again no one’s telling you to settle for less, but at the same time you need to be realistic. You sit down on your butt all day, and yet still you want a man with a “Big wok.” You haven’t been to church since old year’s night, but you want a God fearing man who knows the bible from front to cover. You don’t have ANY money in your bank account, but you want a man with “Plenty money.” This is a famous one, you don’t want a man with any children, and you have two “pickney” of your own! If you want those things listed above you need to develop some sort of ambition and get to work on your future. This is the 21st century; women are bringing in the paper too! Times are way too hard for one person alone to be contributing; it takes two hands to clap. The same way we have standards, the good men who you have claimed “missing” have standards as well, and they just haven’t found the person that meets it yet! Written by: Mahalia Joseph

9 THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A COWORKER

My Dad gave me some good advice about topics that are verboten in the workplace: "Pretend you're in church, but leave God out of it." What he meant was, if you wouldn't say it to your pastor, don't say it to your co-worker. And while it might be a little extreme in our current societal atmosphere, it's a good rule to keep in mind. 1. "I've got this rash on my stomach. Wanna see?" Unless you need to provide a

medical reason for missing work, it's not a good idea to discuss health issues with your co-workers. Your recent surgery, for example, might be interesting to you, but to your colleagues it's a prime example of too much information. Not only can you destroy co-worker relationships by getting too personal, but you might also cause other problems if your correspondent has a weak stomach.

Don't curse and don't trash-talk your coworkers. Mind your business manners in the office and attempt to maintain a constant air of professionalism. Even if the other people in your office don't observe these rules, you should rise above the crowd and find better ways to express yourself. 4. "You wouldn't believe the chick I brought home last night."

2. "If a guy named Joe calls, tell him I was Whether it's your spouse or a one-nightstand, intimate relationships are best left transferred to the New Zealand office." You might simply be trying to dodge your behind when you walk through your office best friend or your brother-in-law after an door. Your coworker relationships are fragile, and any objectionable content they see on your Facebook page or Twitter account or blog might find itself in the hands of your boss. And the last thing you want is to alienate the people you work with every day.

It might be perfectly acceptable to talk religion or politics, or any other issue in your office, but don't be the first to bring it up. In fact, wait until it becomes a frequent topic of conversation and until you've figured out what level of sharing is considered acceptable.

This is something I've started noticing more and more often. Don't make jokes about mental illness or issue uneducated diagnoses. When you hate your job, every moment in the office is a temptation to walk out the front door and never look back. I feel your pain. I've held innumerable jobs over the years that have made me want to tear my hair out in frustration, and I understand the desire to simply cut the dead weight. So how do you know it's time to quit your job? If the economy is in the toilet and your industry is suffering, is it worth the risk? And how should a man recognize the last straw? You're being mistreated. I don't mean you're given more work than everyone else or your boss won't issue the promotion you've been waiting for. I mean true mistreatment. If you're working overtime without being compensated or you've been the victim of discrimination, start a job search now. Your family suffers. I'm a strong believer in making sure that family comes first. If your job is getting the way of your relationship with your wife and/or kids, you might need a new job. Guys, myself included, often wear blinders when it comes to their careers. Take them off, look around, and evaluate how your job affects your family.

MAYBE IT TO QUIT: W SIGNS YOU NEW J

You're stuck. Maybe you took the job thinking you'd get transferred to your ideal department, or perhaps you were promised a promotion that never arrived. Whatever the case, it can be detrimental to your overall morale to stay in a job where you feel under-utilized or under-valued. Start thinking about finding a new job. You're bored out of your mind. When I'm bored, I get careless and I make mistakes. Most men respond that way to work that doesn't challenge them. They start working by rote, just going through the motions, and that's not good for you or your employer. You might want to start a new job search if every day feels like your primary school math class. Others are dropping like flies. Watching other people on the job can help you decide when it's time to quit. If you hate your job and your colleagues are running for the hills, it's probably time to find something new. This often precedes a major upheaval within a company, and you should heed the signs. You spend your free time on Caribbean Jobs. If you're spending every free minute combing through the classifieds and job search sites, you should listen to your gut. Your mind and body are telling you to get out, and it's probably best to listen. This doesn't mean you should hand in your resignation tomorrow, but you might want to start actively pursuing a new job search.

May 2011

You've got a better offer. Men are creatures of habit, and we often allow comfort to dissuade us from great opportunities. If you are given a job offer that comes with a better position, salary, and work environment, don't let fear put the kibosh on your future happiness. Jump at the chance after you investigate the offer and decide if it's something you want.

'S TIME WARNING U NEED A JOB

It's scary and disruptive to look for work, but sometimes it's necessary. When you hate your job, you project that displeasure onto the people you work with (as well as your family), and it's better to find a new job now than to get fired down the road. If you are on the hunt for a new job, know that it's easier to find a job, when you have a job, so start looking while you are still holding your current position. Job-hunting is not what it used to be, and you need to have a plan of action for future employment. Update your resume and cover letter, stay organized and be patient - finding a new job, can be a ‘job’ in itself. Below are a few guidelines to help you find that new job.

1. Identify ideal criteria. It is important to identify what would

make you happy. Is it a shorter commute, better benefits, more money, better hours? What ever it is, you need to figure out what you are looking for and refine your search according to those likes and dislikes. This will make your search more clear and will also save you time.

2. Do not rush the process. Just because you received an offer for a job, does not

mean you have to accept. Don’t jump at the first offer. If the offer meets your criteria, great. But if it doesn’t, don’t be afraid to turn the offer down or negotiate, especially concerning the details that matter to you.

3. Give appropriate notice. If you find a job that better suits you and accept an offer, remember to give appropriate notice (two weeks are customary) to your current employer. You don’t want to burn a bridge, so be sure to transition your work and do your best to effectively wrap up your time there. Regardless of the economic climate and industry health, it is important to start new job search the smart way. Don't quit until you've found something else, and don't jeopardize your employment until you've got a back-up plan.

10 THINGS THAT CAN MAKE YOUR LOSE YOUR JOB By: Candace Augustine

1. Disrespect It If you're at an entry-level job, there's a good chance that you're a lot smarter than the stuff your boss makes you do, and that you normally dress a lot better than your dorky

no. Blame it on your ultrastrict boss (even if your boss is the coolest guy in the world). If you really want to do something nice for your friends, take them out for coffee with one of your paychecks. 3. Show Up Late, Even Once

work uniform. Who cares? You're here to earn cash and experience, not to use your brain or look good. Play along, because as lame as you might feel at work sometimes, it can't be lamer than getting fired

Work isn't like school, where being tardy gets you a warning or a little detention time. If you're late to work, your boss could fire you on the spot - especially if you're new to the job and haven't had a chance to prove your worth yet. If you're naturally a late person, learn how to counteract it by setting your alarm clock extra-early and giving yourself way too much commute time.

2. Give Freebies to Your Friends Your pals might try to benefit from your newfound employment by asking for free food and discounted goods. And why shouldn't they? If you get caught, they won't be the ones 4. Complain About Your Job who get in trouble. When they on Facebook beg you for freebies, just say Don't assume that your boss

(or a coworker who's out to get you) never checks your Facebook account. People have been fired for saying that their job was boring and making jokes about their company, and someone even got turned down for a job because he complained about the company on Twitter before he was hired. Why give your boss such an easy reason to fire you? If you really feel the need to complain, do it privately. 5. Be the Weakest Link Look around your workplace. Are you the laziest, joking-est, most slacking-off person there? If you are, your boss knows it too. Step up your game by showing up to your shifts a little early, smiling a little more around the customers and never, ever letting your boss catch you hanging around doing nothing.

6. Talk Back to Your Boss If your boss says something that wounds your pride, it can be one of the worst feelings in the world. But most entrylevel jobs don't exactly encourage independent thought, so if you want to keep earning that paycheck, keep your mouth shut and save your venting for when you get home. Even if you don't plan on staying at your job for long, keep your boss on your good side so you can use her as a reference on your next job application. Yes, it might take a little acting on your part, but that's all part of working for a living. 7. Skip Work (and Get Caught Doing It) This should be a no-brainer, but if you play hooky from work one day, don't get caught. Stay far away from your place of work and avoid seeing any of your coworkers (even the ones who are usually on your side). And don't be like this guy or this girl who

Page 27

posted Facebook status updates on their sick days proving they weren't really sick. 8. Get Into It with a Coworker You might not like all of your coworkers, but if you want to keep your job, you've got to swallow your pride, keep your head down and avoid any confrontations that could get in the way of your work. If you do get into an argument, don't run to your boss - try to solve it on your own. Your boss is more likely to fire anyone who's causing trouble than play babysitter to his employees.

tracking software that allows her to see exactly what sites you're looking at. I know you want to check your email, but it's not worth the risk. 10. Give Yourself a Bonus When you're working for minimum wage, it's tempting to give yourself some free perks (otherwise known as stealing from your employer). You might think that after that 10-hour shift, you've earned a free sandwich or tshirt or whatever, but try to resist the temptation. You've agreed to work at your job for a set wage. If you don't like it, look for a higher-paying

job instead of taking it out on your current one. Stealing is 9. Use Your Computer for illegal, unethical and plain old Non-Work Stuff If your job gives you access to trashy. a computer, then never, ever use it for anything other than work stuff unless you have permission. Even if your boss isn't looking over your shoulder, she might have installed

A Case of Misjudgment…

I Think Not Well we all know the usual traditions are or what God intended it to be as the man to marry a woman. But now we‟re starting to have same sex marriages for both males and females which bring mixed reviews. However things have gotten stranger as there are now marriages between humans and animals! Now I always say once you love the person then nothing should stop you from wanting to be with that person but in this case it‟s just asking too much. This estranged event took place in India, the land of the Kama Sutra. It was held at a traditional Hindu ceremony at a temple in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The groom in question was a 33 year old Indian farmer named Selvakumar, and he was to wed the supposed dog name Selvi (female dog of course). Now what he saw in Selvi is still unclear but his main reason for his audacious actions was because it was to atone for stoning two other dogs to death and stringing them up in a tree 15 years ago. So it‟s bad enough he wants to marry a dog but he slayed two when he was a teenager to! It leaves me to wonder what more he can possibly do. Only he knows, but he believed the act cursed him and he had been suffering ever since according to what he told Hinduism Times. Now they say „what goes around comes around‟ and it seems that this case isn‟t any different because after the slaying and stoning, Selvakumar got his legs and hands paralyzed over time. He also lost his hearing in one ear, and his speech was impaired. He

May 2011

Page 41

probably got what he deserved for his inhumane act but nonetheless all his mishaps could just be due to him being unlucky. With doctors unable to help him, Selvakumar turned to an astrologer who told him he was cursed by the spirits of the dogs he had killed. At least now I know not to kick a dog again far less kill them. But he could only undo this curse unless he married a dog and live with it, the „soothsayer‟ warned. So his family members who supported the healing of his curse went out to find a stray female dog that was then bathed and clothed for the wedding occasion. Selvi the bride was then brought to the temple by village women and a Hindu priest conducted the ceremony. It leaves me to think the obscurities he may have faced or the difficulties in making the priest or people believe he wanted to marry a dog. It‟s amazing yet sad at the same time but Selvi was adorned in an orange sari and flower garland. The Hinduism Times said that the groom and his family then had a feast, while the dog got a bun. Now you just married this woman, sorry dog, and with her being your wife she just got a bun? You could have at least given her, her own table with some more food. But apparently the dog saw it from my perspective and attempted to make a bolt for it but she was tracked down and returned to her new „husband‟. If dogs could only speak I wonder what she would have said being brought into this against her will. “The dog is only for lifting the curse and after that, he plans to get a real bride,” a friend of the groom said. Whatever the case is I don‟t know but he chose to marry the dog and I can‟t say anything about it now. But the chances in this happening in Trinidad seem highly unlikely. People are superstitious here but I haven‟t heard any story to this extent, as yet that is. But for now things seem normal but if this does happen in Trinidad it would be very interesting as to why the person would marry a animal.

New Beginnings Those of you who are nearly finish with exams or school are probably wondering what you’re going to do. Well you could either feel to stay home and sleep whole day like me or get a job to make some money. Now the sound of getting some money sounds really nice but so does sleeping in whole day. After all those years of school and then life with exams, sleep and parties would be the only thing in my head. If only life could be so, but in reality it isn’t sadly. We have to get up and work for our money in some form or fashion so honestly we should start thinking on what we think is our best option at this time. Whatever your circumstances are make sure and don’t put too much stress on yourself. After all we’re still young and should enjoy every minute of it so we could still go that party that everybody talking about or have somebody in mind we probably really like. You could probably stay in with your parents and save money which could be easier than leaving your parents house as soon as you’re finished with school. Yes sadly we can’t exactly do our own thing because it’s still not our house but soon enough once you save well you’ll be making your own rules in your own house soon. But with age also comes maturity and responsibilities. After all we are the future of tomorrow and so we should be prepared to handle all what life has to offer. So here are some tips and helpful reminders that we can remember while beginning life as an adult. This is where the parents come in, while we were under their roof they help nurture and groom us for the world outside. So while we may be excited about life on our own we still have to be cautious about a few things. Firstly we look at money. It’s just paper right? No it’s much more and for that fact it can cause enemies, injuries or even bring death. So we should be careful of how we use and spend our money. Even when it comes to borrowing and lending. Next when we go out on our own we obviously would need a place to live and in order to maintain or attain that place we need a job. If you ask many people today if they rather go back to the days when they were in school over working, many would rather going back to school. It just goes to show that life seems more demanding in the future than it is now while in school.

Whether you do choose to stay in your parent’s house or go out on your own, you still have responsibilities that you need to attend to on a regular basis, as our actions as adults would have greater consequences compared to when we were teenagers or as young children in primary school. Then we have to look at the people we keep company with. This is important because the people around you influence the person that you may become. I’m not saying to forget all your friends who are more negative than positive but instead pay more attention to the type of things that they do that won’t help you. This would help you to know when to and not to be around them. The world today is filled with people who are greedy, presumptuous, self pride, deceiving and people who would do anything to get what they want. We have to be on our p’s and q’s at all times because as mentioned earlier the consequences carry a greater effect. Having examined all of this, it may seem that some may not want life on their own now but then your hiding from living a life that you should. This is why I rather sleeping and parties any day. But in order to get to those parties I also need the money and not all of our parents are wealthy enough to support us our whole life. So we have to earn that money and we also have to realize our own potential. We were put here to achieve things because each and every one of us has some sort of potential and if we decide to waste it on needless things or don’t use them at all then were just robbing ourselves of the joys we can receive in the future. As one person puts it, ‘You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing in which you think you cannot do.’ With all the experience and wisdom we gain in life after school it can truly benefit us and leave us thinking that we attained something special. Life would never seem easy and trust me life after school is never easy, no matter how much support you receive because your input in your own life is always important. Time waits on no one so go out there with the purpose of being prepared for anything that comes your way and in the end you would have achieved your personal goals of whatever it may be. And at the same time enjoy your youth because you’re never going to get it back.

Somehow I find myself bubbling with anxiety and anticipation, this time every year, because I identify with every guy or girl who has marked the date for “grad” as we know it in Trinidad or “prom” for our American counterparts.
