PELLE PETTERSON: WORLD CHAMPION AND LEGEND Starting with an internship at Volvo, he became a designer icon for both the automobile and boat industries. Pelle Petterson’s passion for the sea was awakened in Kullavik, Sweden, which was to propel him into a marine career. This is the story of the greatest legend of our time in sailing and industrial design. Amongst his designs you can find Volvo’s sports model P1800. The vehicle became a cult. Today the P1800 is an icon for the entire automobile world, as well as products ranging from Watches to a Stena Passenger ferry. More than 100.000 boats have been built after Pelle’s designs including the Nimbus and Maxi Yachts.
ON THE PODIUM
DESIG HERITAGE
Pelle Petterson’s sailing career has given him two Olympic medals and dozens World Championship medals in sailing races. He is also a two-time challenger in the America’s Cup, one of the greatest races a sailor can take part in. Among all his awards, there are some that stand out from the others. Winning Star World Championships and being awarded a prize by King Gustav V in person after winning the Kungakannan sailing race in Särö four times. He received the Royal Institute of Technology’s Great Prize in 2004 and H. M. the King’s Medal 12th size for special merits in 2011.
Cecilia Petterson, daughter of Pelle Petterson, is the founder and designer behind the clothing company Pelle P. The brand is based on Pelle´s lifestyle and his accomplishments as a top level sportsman. Cecilia grew up around sailboat racing and on the ski slopes with her dad. She studied at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, USA.
AMERICA’S CUP has had a special place in the family since Pelle Petterson was behind Sweden’s first challenge for the cup, which took place among the classic twelves in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1977. Pelle took his whole family to the United States and was involved in two challenges there, both as designer of the boats and as helmsman. In 2010, Pelle P became the official clothing supplier of the Swedish America’s Cup Challenger Artemis Racing. America’s Cup is innovative and fearless, where you are challenged every second and the design is tested in it’s true environment by top athletes - we call it TRUE EXPERIENCE.

TECHNOLOGY WATERPROOFNESS & BREATHABILITY The waterproof/breathability of fabrics is typically describes with two numbers. The first is in millimeter (mm) and is a measure of how waterproof a fabric is. In the case of a 20k or 20,000mm fabric, if you put a square tube with inner dimension of 1”x1” over a piece of said fabric, you can fill it with water to a height of 10,000mm before water would begin to leak through. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric. The second number is a measure of how breathable the fabric is, it’s normally expressed in terms of how many grams of water vapor can pass through a square meter of the fabric from the inside to the outside in a period of 24b hours. In the case of a 20k fabric, this would be 20,000 grams. The larger the number, the more breathable the fabric.
