Pellenc is undertaking a sustainable development process, aimed at limiting the environmental impact of its activities. The group is incorporating this idea across the board, from product design onwards. PELLENCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s environmental policy has the aim of reducing the impact of its activities on the environment, evaluating its development across the whole lifecycle of its products from the design stage onwards. As well as the product lifecycle, it covers the industrial system used in manufacture and the infrastructures accommodating the businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s human resources and organisation. The PELLENC group teams invest 13 million euros a year in Research & Development. The group is thus pro-active in developing standards, especially in the motor drive sector.

The motors fitted to PELLENC machines are equipped with systems intended to improve combustion efficiency and thus reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as limit the discharge of fine particles and nitrogen oxide (NOx). PELLENC’s R&D work on optimising the weight of its machines and equipment, as well as developing motor drive control systems (linking motor running to the need for hydraulic power) also contributes to cutting fuel consumption.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

PELLENC has produced a carbon report for its portable power tools, meeting ADEME recommendations, in order to measure their direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and compare them with the equivalent thermal motor tools. Results are compelling: compared to their petrol-fuelled equivalents, PELLENC portable power tools emit 120 times less greenhouse gas, and only indirectly, with regard to the electrical power they use.

Trailblazer for brushless motors and lithium-ion technology, in the last decade PELLENC has made massive investments in design, development and manufacture of a full range of “zero emission” portable power tools for maintaining green spaces and urban landscapes, fruit and olive tree-growing and wine-growing. The aim was to offer a range of tools offering the same levels of performance (power, battery life, etc.) as their thermal motor equivalents, but without direct CO2 emissions and with noise levels below the legal thresholds requiring the wearing of ear protection.

REDUCE NOISE POLLUTION PELLENC portable power tools comply with the directives: • N° 2003/10/CE relating to minimum health and safety provisions on workers’ exposure to risks from physical agents (noise); • N° 2000/14/CE, on noise emissions equipment used outside buildings.

The PELLENC portable power tools run on electricity, with brushless motors which makes them the quietest tools on the market, in contrast to petrol motor tools. PELLENC’s electrical technology reduces the number of components in the tools (no clutch) as well as the movement of mechanical parts, thus reducing noise emissions. Moreover, and unlike petrol motors which operate continuously, the PELLENC brushless motors come to a complete stop between cuts. So even its low noise level is limited during the cut, benefiting the user and the neighbourhood. PELLENC tools have noise levels below the limit set by European standards for the wearing of ear protection (<86 dB). So there is no need to wear ear defenders when operating PELLENC tools.

PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY AND PLANT LIFE PELLENC machines, equipment and tools are designed to operate using non-mineral, biodegradable oils. This is particularly important with carriers, harvesting heads and equipment for wine-growing, as well as tools such as chainsaws and pruners. PELLENC machines are designed to be as lightweight as possible, in order to reduce soil compaction and the effect on plant root systems (vines, olives, etc.) as the carriers pass by. PELLENC products comply with regulations governing use of heavy metals and toxic or hazardous substances that can harm the environment. The lithium-ion used in our battery components is not a heavy metal, and is 80% recyclable. The hydrosoluble paints used are applied in chambers with a controlled, filtered atmosphere.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY BUSINESS

For spraying, PELLENC has developed technologies to optimise dosage and reduce drift, in order to cut consumption and avoid weedkiller dispersal in the environment, thus helping to protect biodiversity. PELLENC sprayer machines and systems are designed on the basis of the following standards: • ISO 4254-6:2009 relating to safety requirements and verification in design and manufacture of carried, half-carried, towed and self-driven agricultural sprayers, used by a single operator and intended for application of weedkillers and liquid fertilizers. • NF 12761-1 and NF 12761-3, for liquid fertilizer sprayers and spreaders - environmental protection.

In 2014, PELLENC was rewarded by the Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development and by ADEME in the category “Eco-product for sustainable development”.

MINIMISING CONSUMPTION OF WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES

PELLENC has also implemented a reverse logistics policy in its distribution network, in accordance with the CHIMIREC programme, approved for collection, sorting, recycling and processing of industrial waste and equipment (batteries, tyres, circuit boards, electric cables, plastics, etc.). PELLENC’s catalogues and sales leaflets are printed by PEFC certified printers (on recycled paper).

The machines and their lubrication systems are designed to need just one-third the grease of the other machines on the market. PELLENC’s systems also aim to limit oil consumption. For example: • The PELLENC chainsaw uses a patented, smart oil flow management system. This electronic system optimises oil flow by injecting the quantity needed according to the cutting force being applied and not according to chain rotation speed. This technology enables an oil saving of up to 30 %, and thus helps reduce the environmental impact.

PELLENC products are designed to use recyclable materials as a priority, and anticipate the restrictions and requirements for product end-of-life recycling. For instance, the lithium-ion elements in our batteries can be 80% recycled on our production lines, which is currently the best recycling rate for battery cells.

The configuration of PELLENC harvesting heads and sorting systems means an average cleaning time half that needed for the equipment available on the market. This also halves the consumption of water needed to clean them each day.

PROCESSES AND SUPPLY CHAIN INCORPORATING THE IDEA OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT -

Consistent with its environmental policy, PELLENC is implementing manufacturing processes which optimise this concept of sustainable development, in particular by incorporating them into the supply chain and logistics optimisation policies.

REDUCING AND OPTIMISING PACKAGING The PELLENC group has deployed a supply chain policy aimed at cutting the quantity, volume and weight of packaging, in order to optimise transport of goods and thus limit environmental impact in terms of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This policy also helps limit the direct impact of packaging on the environment (waste output). Packaging has been removed in favour of â&#x20AC;&#x153;bulkâ&#x20AC;? wrapping for small, high-consumption supplies (screws and fittings, seals, etc.). This is also the case for medium-sized parts which are not fragile, and are simply film-wrapped.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY BUSINESS

OPTIMISE LOGISTICS FLOWS From the design stage, PELLENC incorporates the dimensional constraints associated with transporting its machines, equipment and tools to make them as compact as possible, thus optimising transport volumes. The group has invested in a special software package for maximising pallet capacity, according to destination at both national and international level, integrating internal (production) and external (distribution) flows. This software also calculates the optimal route for trucks to serve the delivery points. Together with improved packaging (bulk, skinpack, etc.) this has cut transport costs per part by 30% and reduced the impact of transport on the environment in proportion. Finally, PELLENC gives preference to maritime consolidation, for the most efficient shipment of containers. This cooperative transport service with other companies enables optimum filling of containers, and thus limits the number of shipments.

A STRONG ECO-BUILDING POLICY -

PELLENC takes account of the impact of buildings and production on energy expenditure and on the well-being of the teams working there.

PELLENC TIPS Trellising recommendations

Tension of the lifting wires

The trellising lifter works with all types of stakes except those equipped with a T bar larger than 15 cm. Quality of posts, installation, and tension of revolving threads are essential factors in proper mechanisation of vine lifting and fastening.

Several parameters: length of rows, vigour and density of vegetation, type of wire.

Three types of wire are possible: galvanised non-steel, galvanised steel, and nylon. The galvanised steel wires No. 13 and No. 16 (2 mm to 2.7 mm depending on vegetation) produce the best results. Using suitable lifting wires is a requirement for proper mechanised lifting and trellising of the vine.

Preparation for “entry into the rows”

In other cases, we recommend you install fastening stirrups and tension chains on the anchoring posts in order to determine in use the best thread tension, placing the lifting wire tensioners at the end of the rows.

Importance of cultivation techniques The ease and quality of lifting depends on the grape variety (naturally upright or falling) and the cultivation techniques of the vineyard. We recommend the "cordon" or "flat tying" for best results.

The suction roller is placed next to a feed roller. They rotate in opposite directions, grabbing the leaves. The leaves remain intact since they do not pass through the turbine.

The row tracking sensor of the SOFT TOUCH remover guarantees complete respect for the grape with its wide surface area, and a constant leaf-removing rate with its high responsiveness.

This new crushing concept allows optimum opening of the berries based on their maturity, resulting in better extraction of juices, polyphenols, and aromatic compounds. Flow rates of up to 25 tons/hour.

SELION M12 fruit-growing

The kickback sensor with electronic start-up instantly triggers the electric chain brake in the event of a fall or kickback, and is 8 times more sensitive than a petroloperated chainsaw chain brake.

With the OREGON chain, the kickback effect, if it occurs, will be much less violent than on a conventional chainsaw.

The tool's self-diagnosis system checks during first use that the electronic kickback sensor is operational. If this is the case, the machine will operate.

The double-press start-up trigger prevents accidental start-up of the chainsaw.

Feedback We have had our F100 frontal shaker for two years now and are very satisfied with its performance. The three-point pinch grip system in combination with the important clamping force allows the F100 to vibrate effectively, reducing the time spent at each tree.
