23rdAnnual Production Sale

2 pm at the Ranch, North of Drake, ND

Sunday, February 16, 2025

Welcome Cattlemen and Cattlewomen!

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our family’s 23rd Annual Production Sale, annually held the third Sunday in February. It is because of great repeat buyers and the excellent new customers we have met along the way that we can present this offering to you. We want to personally thank all of you and we are privileged to have the opportunity to be your trusted seed stock supplier. This year’s offering consists of 71 yearling bulls, 42 2-year-old bulls, and 41 registered bred heifers. The consigned commercial female group this year will consist of: 29 commercial Angus replacement heifers from the Dockter-Jensen Ranch in Denhoff, ND, 32 F1 black baldy replacement heifers from Ryan and Stacy Bruner of Drake, ND, 17 F1 black baldy replacement heifers and 16 F1 black baldy bred heifers from Luke and Jacy Peterson of Kief, ND, 12 commercial bred Angus heifers from Chris and Annie Arnold of Denhoff, ND, 10 commercial bred Angus heifers from Mike and Jim Rott of Anamoose, ND, 18 commercial bred Angus Heifers from Reimche Land & Cattle of Martin, ND, and 12 registered and commercial Angus bred heifers from Bryan and Sonya Miller of Bismarck, ND. This will be the largest and most diversified offering to date with 300+ head that is sure to satisfy your needs!

The yearling bulls were weaned September 10th and have been developed on a ration of barley hay, alfalfa hay, triticale hay, corn silage, rolled corn, and a protein/mineral pellet specifically designed for bull development. This ration is balanced at a NEg of .46 Mcal/lb. and has produced a 3.4 lb. average daily gain since weaning on this set of yearling bulls. After sale day, the energy will be dropped further and they will be moved to a larger pen for more exercise and to create pen space for us during calving. These bulls will be in good breeding shape when they are delivered. This group of yearling bulls are all born in a 2-week period. This tight age group allows for an easy evaluation for you, the buyer. As a seedstock or commercial seller, the goal is always to produce the most even/consistent set of animals in the highest volume possible. We have certainly accomplished that in this sale. We are very proud of this set of bulls and we hope you feel the same.

The 2-year-old bulls this year are big, stout, mature bulls ready to work. Raising 2-year-old bulls is a great test to see how our breeding decisions are benefiting one step further. The power, performance, look, and genetic potential they have exhibited to this point is showing the true benefits of the critical pressure in selection we continue to put on our cowherd. Our 2-year-old bulls come either from our AI/ET program or our top herd bulls. The AI/ET bulls in this group are bred to calve the end of April. These bulls are fed a modest growing ration their first winter off the cow, then pastured on grass together as a group, and then return home in the fall. They are fed the same ration as our yearling bulls the winter preceding the sale. These age-advantage bulls have never been offered for sale, are bred, born, and developed specifically for this sale. They will give you extra reliability and increased cow coverage.

All bulls and registered heifers have genomic enhanced EPD’s and are parent verified. This provides the most up-to-date EPD’s, $Values, and also a guaranteed pedigree. The EPD’s in the catalog are as of the 1/3/25 update to the AAA database. We will provide a supplement sheet sale day with scrotal measurements, ADG and ADJ Yearling Weights.

The registered bred heifers have been ultra-sounded and sexed with complete calving information in the catalog. These heifers were out on corn stalks until December 15th when they were sorted off for clipping, and treated just as the ones we plan to calve out ourselves. Like the 2-year-old bulls, this is another phase where we can see the benefits of our breeding decisions. This is a set of heifers anyone would be proud of! These heifers will have been poured with Clean-Up II and be up-to-date on their pre-calving Scour Boss and breeding vaccinations before the sale.

Again this year, the sale will be broadcast live online through DVAuction. The individual videos of each lot will be available approximately 2 weeks before the sale. If your schedule does not allow you to be with us sale day, we hope that this option can help out. If you have any questions with this please let us know.

The cattle are available for viewing anytime, or join us at our PreSale Open House at the ranch February 8th from noon to 5 pm and receive $100 sale day credit! If you have questions please do not hesitate to call. We look forward to seeing you at the sale!

This does not cover injuries prior to the breeding season. If a problem occurs, we will provide a suitable replacement, or you will receive full credit, minus $2,000, towards a purchase in next year’s sale. The guarantee does not cover death as that is insurable. Injury or death prior to delivery of the bull is not the responsibility of Bruner Angus Ranch, also insurable. We reserve the right to a second opinion by a veterinarian of our choice.

We are offering free delivery on the bulls. For bulls going outside of North Dakota, we will help coordinate delivery to get the bulls to you as economically as we can. For all Females, it is the buyer’s responsibility to transport them to their desired location. Welcome to Bruner Angus Ranch’s Annual February Sale!

These are exciting times! With the tremendous demand and record breaking prices, it is definitely a great time to be in the cattle business. With the way prices are, I don’t even mind the winter weather. Another headlining chapter is being written at Bruner Angus because of Deep Creek Square Deal, the great young sire that Bruner’s purchased with Select Sires. His first offering will be one of the highlights in this year’s sale. Be sure to study this young sire’s offering. The balance of the offering will be as strong or stronger than it’s ever been, featuring Connealy Craftsman, Myers Fair-N-Square, Mohnen Holllywood, Mohnen Trust Fund, and more.

More than half of the offering will carry the CAB Stamp on their pedigree. These cattle will certainly produce a high quality product. I believe that our consumers keep buying because they want this excellent eating experience.

You’ll find an awesome set of 2 year old bulls again in this sale. It will be hard to find another set of two year old bulls anywhere to sell like these offered.

Registered bred heifers of high quality will be available, and the commercial open and commercial bred heifers from Bruner customers will again be offered. Some of the best you’ll find.

You’re working with an awesome family at Bruner Angus. They are very dedicated to their customers, and very passionate about the Angus breed. It’s truly a family operation, where everyone has their role and helps each other.

If I can be of help, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 701-721-0344.

Sincerely, Vern Frey

Turn Out Bull Sale

Monday, June 2nd, Rugby Livestock

Mark your calendars: Bruner Angus Ranch will be holding our 9th Annual Turn Out Bull Sale on Monday, June 2nd at Rugby Livestock in Rugby, ND offering 40 yearling and 20 2-year-old bulls ready to work, and 50 replacement heifers. Look for more info this Spring!

Your guide to our genetics

All bulls have been Angus GS tested. These genomic-enhanced EPD results are listed with each lot number in the catalog. To assist in your selection, below is an explanation of each EPD that is listed with each bull.

American Angus Association® Selection Tools

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves.

CARCASS

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).

In case of train on tracks, go East on gravel road 1/4 mile before the tracks. Go East 1 mile, turn left and go North 1 mile, then turn right on 41st

Lots 12 & 13 are an exciting set of flush brothers by the new and exciting sire Connealy Craftsman! On the hoof it is very difficult to find a difference in these two bulls; you be the judge! They are long-spined, wide-based, and have a big, square hip!

The donor dam in this flush BAR Miss Acclaim 9118 has been a big-time producer! As a first calf heifer she produced BAR Commodore 1024, the heaviest 205-day bull in BAR history at 933 lbs. and $14,500 high selling bull of our 2022 production sale. She has now had 4 natural calves with an average weaning ratio of 122 with a 378-day calving interval and at the same time being an excellent embryo producer! These bulls have the ability to improve any registered or commercial operation!

Lot 12 is an AI stud quality type of bull with the highest $M of this entire sale at +103, a +1.29 marbling, and +327 $C all while being impressive on a visual appraisal!

Yearling Bulls

Lot 17: BAR Relentless 4064 is the lead bull in a pen of bulls sired by Sitz Relentless 558J, our pick of the of the 2022 Sitz Angus spring production sale. Relentless was the highest performing Resilient son of that calf crop and has turned into a great addition to our herd bull battery. 4064 has as much depth and 3-dimensional rib shape as any bull in this offering! He carries himself well on the move and covers his tracks every step of the way. His mother has done a great job on her first 3 calves averaging a 112-weaning ratio. We will calve the first Relentless daughters this spring and they have a great momma cow look as bred heifers!

Lot 20: BAR Trust Fund 4508 is the first of a nice set of bulls this year by another great bull in our herd bull battery, Mohnen Trust Fund 6030. 4508 is a full brother to the 4th high selling bull in last years sale for $15,000. He is an exact replica of that bull from last year: big, stout, above average frame, with tremendous length! The donor dam 7075 excels in production traits like fleshing ability, great mothering ability, and milk production. The greatest part of 7075 is her easy-going attitude! She is the kind of cow that makes ranching fun. We are excited to see what this bull can do for his new owners!

BAR Trust Fund 4052

Lot 22: BAR Trust Fund 4052 is a high performing individual that holds the highest weaning weight among all natural born calves in this sale at 860 lbs. His individual performance and growth EPD’s certainly match with a +102 WW and +163 YW that are in the top 1% and 3% respectively. 4052 is out of a great young first calf heifer that knocked it out of the park with this bull! She is the type of young cow we are trying to replicate, with a quiet demeanor, a great udder, and that extra depth and thickness she passed on to her calf. Trust Fund has been used with great success in our own herd and our customers herds as a go to calving ease bull with as much performance as any performance sire we have used.

Yearling Bulls

BAR Iconic 3463

Lot 72: BAR Iconic 3463 will lead off an awesome set of coming 2-year-old bulls this year. We are very proud of these 2-year-old bulls, because it shows the depth in both our cow herd and bull battery we have put together. Each year, like the yearling bulls, they have been improving and getting better. 3463 is an ET bull that carries the CAB stamp, has a +1.12 marbling, has the highest adjusted 205-day weight in this entire sale at 906 lbs., and is one of the stoutest bulls in this entire 2-year-old group! He is a big scrotal bull, has an extreme amount of depth, and is the heaviest bull in the pen as of our last weight check! Look for this bull to make sons and daughters that improve carcass qualities without sacrificing anything down the line.

BAR No Doubt 3347

Lot 73: BAR No Doubt 3347 is one of the elite power bulls in this auction! This bull has so much length and width and it shows when he steps on the scale. The No Doubt progeny have always performed well and been high customer satisfaction cattle. We do not expect this to be any different with this one. He is a big ribeye bull and growth EPD’s in the top 15% and 20% of the breed. The dam in this pedigree is a great example of your typical Impression daughter: deep bodied, level hipped, and just produces big powerful calves! She is a natural daughter of one of our first donors ever at the BAR.

TwoYear-Old Bulls

Lot 74: BAR Scale House 3252 is another performance bull by the proven sire SAV Scale House 0845. This will be the 3rd year in a row we have had some Scale House progeny. They are always mild-mannered, easy-going cattle, with extra thickness! 3252 is a full brother to the high-selling bull in last years June “Turn Out” bull sale selling for $10,000. This bull stands on a great set of feet, and has just the right amount of heel depth. One of the best parts about 3252 is his donor dam Miss Wix 125 of SAF. She is a cow we think a lot of, being the #1 income earning cow in our history. We have 32 direct daughters working in our herd spread over multiple generations. Looking at her progeny records over the last 13 years we have registered 114 total animals out of 125!

Lots 76 & 77 are full brothers sired by Mohnen Trust Fund 6030 out of BAR Miss Traction 7075. They are also full brothers to lot 20 in the yearling division and the 4th high selling bull from last year’s sale! This mating worked with a tremendous amount of consistency. These bulls are above average frame, long-spined, and are super easy to handle. They were both born at modest birth weights and have performed near the top of their contemporary group at every check along the way. This would be a great set of full brothers to turn out together on a big set of cows or heifers!

Lot 81: BAR Stellar 3318 is the only Sitz Stellar son we will have in this offering. 3318 is an ET bull out of the MOGCK Elba 1567 donor who was our pick of the Enhance bred heifers from Mogck’s in 2019. This bull is solid from front to back and the ground up. He is a great footed bull and that matches his claw and angle EPD’s that are in the top 4% and 5% of the Angus breed, respectively. He is a big spread bull with WW and YW EPD’s both in the top 10% of the breed. Sitz Stellar has made name for himself as one of the premier female makers and we expect nothing less from this son!

TwoYear-Old Bulls

Lots 82-85 are all sons of Sitz Relentless 558J. This gives you a chance to see this sire group as older bulls and we think you will be impressed. They are big, long, stretchy made bulls that are super athletic and will be sure to cover extra cows. Relentless did a great job for us this year and you will have 18 sons in this sale to choose from between the yearling and 2-year-old division.

Lot 114: BAR Miss Raindance 3303 will lead off an awesome group of registered bred heifers! We are very proud of the quality through this entire group of heifers. We based the catalog order primarily off the order of when they are due to calve. The only reason these heifers are in the sale is they are calving out of our window for our first calf heifers. 3303 has been a favorite by everyone at the ranch all fall/winter. Deep-bodied, wide-pinned, strong-topped, and super clean fronted! She has awesome structure, great feet, and is excellent on the move. She is sired by Mohnen Raindance 1599, who has been a great breeding bull for us, we have retained multiple daughters from him back in our herd and they are very profitable! Do not miss this heifer sale day.

Lot 150: BAR Josie 3506 is the performance leader in this group of bred heifers! The heaviest weaning weighted heifer in the entire sale and the whole heifer calf crop of 2023 at BAR! She is a big framed, stout, young cow with lots of length. She is an ET heifer sired by BAR Explosive the high selling 2-year-old bull from 2021 selling to Mohnen Angus of White Lake, SD. Explosive has proven to compete with any of the top performing AI sires in the Angus breed for pounds at weaning and overall true performance. This heifer demonstrates exactly that. Bred to our new herd sire Mohnen Ambassador 113 who was the lot 2 sale feature bull of their 2024 sale.

Lot 151: BAR Lena 3395 is another heifer right off the top of the ET calves sired by Myers Fair-N-Square M39 out of our 9094 donor who is also the donor dam of the lots 1 & 2 bulls of this sale! She carries the CAB stamp, is so broody, deep bodied, and good on the move! Heifers like her hurt to let go, but cannot wait to see what she can do for her new owner. Bred later than we would like, but could be a heifer to go into a late spring calving herd or even move into a fall calving herd. 3395 has the highest WW and YW EPD’s out of this entire group of bred heifers being in the top 1% and 4% of the Angus breed. We believe this heifer has the looks and pedigree to be something special. Bred to our new herd sire Mohnen Ambassador 113 who was the lot 2 sale feature bull of their 2024 sale. Check her out sale day you will not be disappointed.

29 Black Angus Commercial Replacement Heifers

The Dockter-Jensen Ranch is providing a great set of commercial open Angus replacement heifers again this year. There will be 29 heifers in this group that are end of March and April born calves. Kerry and Kyle have always put extra culling pressure on performance and docility in their cow herd. Through years of excellent record keeping and measuring real life profitable traits, this group of heifers on October 17th had an average weight of 616 lbs. and an average weaning ratio of 103 against their entire herd! The steer mates to these heifers last year were finished at a feedlot in Iowa with excellent results. They converted 5.9 pounds of feed/pound of gain with an ADG of 3.8 lbs. through the entire feeding period. That group of steers graded 9% Select, 68% Choice, 22% CAB, and 1% Prime. This proves the carcass quality and performance in this great herd! Kerry and Kyle have always bought bulls off of the very top of our sales. A couple of the sires of these heifers purchased in 2021/2022 are: BAR Unanimous - $7,500, BAR Big Money 1252 - $8,500, and BAR Supercharger 0045 - $8,000. These heifers have had 4 rounds of shots: birth, branding, preconditioning (October), and the end of November. They have been bangs vaccinated, been poured with Clean-up, dewormed with Synanthic, had their pre-breeding shot, and been checked open and breedable. These heifers have a reputation of becoming excellent cows!

This will be a great opportunity to get the benefits of both the Angus and Hereford genetics. These heifers are bangs vaccinated, have been poured with Clean-Up, are dewormed, have been checked open and breedable, and have been reproductive tract scored. They are on a full mineral program and all of the Angus genetics here are sired by Bruner Angus bulls, so buy with confidence.
