We would like to welcome you to our 48th Annual Bull sale. It is with great pleasure that we bring you this set of bulls that we feel are the top cut of the 2024 calf crop. The quality from top to bottom is very uniform. Our goal here at Koupals B&B Angus is to breed functional, practical cattle to keep the commercial cow man in business. Cattle that can thrive in a practical environment with different management levels.
We are still very focused on the maternal side of the seedstock business as this seems to be the part that keeps us in business. As we look back, the bulls with optimum performance and carcass quality are still the ones that seem to come to the top as we concentrate on cow fertility and functionality. With any extremes you have to wonder if your investments can withstand the resources, environment, and management to breed for maximum performance and carcass merit. Many of the bulls we see in high demand soon fall after a few years once the daughters come into production. We have started to increase our ET program focusing more on high fertility and productive cows, not just numbers.
This year after much thought and discussion, two of our sons, Dan & Joey and families, have decided to branch off and have their own sale about 120 west of us. It was a tough decision but in the long run, feel it was a perfect time for them while they are young and just building their own herds. They are in the heart of cattle country and have a lot of connections out where they live. We are still working back and forth and using the same breeding philosophy.

HERD HEALTH AND REGISTRATIONS: All bulls will have been inspected by our licensed vets at Northwest Vet located at Parkston and Wagner. All vaccinations that are required are given to the bulls along with a hoof rot shot. All bulls have been bled for Brucellosis and are BVD free. They will be semen tested, guaranteed breeders and all health papers will be ordered for all bulls to be shipped anywhere in the United States. All registrations and transfers of the bulls will be taken care of by the Koupals.
DELIVERY: Free delivery on all bulls selling for $3,000 or more within a 300-mile radius, after 300 miles at cost. When delivering bulls, we may deliver to a central location spot such as vet clinics, sale barns or ranch that has agreed to be a drop off point. We ask in advance for your cooperation.
BOARDING: Save $50 per head by taking the bull home sale day. We will start delivering shortly after March 1st. If you choose not to have them delivered, a $2 per day boarding fee will be charged and you can pick them up by April 1st. Please tell the girls clerking if you are leaving them or want them delivered. All bulls left at the ranch do so at the buyer’s risk. We suggest you buy mortality insurance if leaving the bull at Koupal Angus.
RETAINING INTEREST: KOUPAL ANGUS IS RETAINING A ONE-THIRD REVENUE SHARING SEMEN INTEREST IN EVERY BULL SELLING IN THIS SALE UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE FROM THE BLOCK. FULL POSSESSION AND FULL SALVAGE SELLS ON ALL BULLS UNLESS INDICATED FROM THE BLOCK SALE DAY.
VOLUME DISCOUNT: The purchase of 5 or more bulls by a single buyer will earn a 5% discount.
INSURANCE: An Insurance Representative will be on hand to answer any questions you have on mortality and breeding injury insurance. Mortality and breeding insurance will be available sale day and two representatives will be on hand to explain and handle your needs.
GUARANTEE: We guarantee all bulls to be sound and fertile, but reserve the right to test any animal that is returned to the farm as a nonbreeder for 90 days before making an adjustment. All bulls selling for $3,000 or more will be covered at 50% minus $1,500 (salvage price at sale) if they have a breeding injury during their first breeding season. In the event of an adjustment, a replacement of equal value or credit on the purchase of another animal will be made. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bull. Please notify us as soon as possible if an injury does occur and prior to the injured bull being sold. All bulls need to be diagnosed by a veterinarian and claims made before September 1st. This is not an insurance policy nor does it cover neglect or mismanagement. Credit will not be issued on bulls that are purchased on credit.
LIABILITY: All buyers attending the bull sale do so at their own risk. Koupal Angus assumes no liability for accidents or property loss that may occur.
PERFORMANCE DATA: Current EPDs are available on each lot in addition to birth weight, 205-day weight and 365-day adjusted weight. Fertility test, scrotal measurements and ultrasound carcass data are all included in the sale book.

His mom had a bad hip so I drafted him onto a heifer at birth. He didn’t have creep feed. He was a little behind at weaning, but he is coming on strong now.
These calves are raised in different groups, some as much as 70 miles away. When calves are weaned “with any group” they are hauled home and weighed sometimes sitting as much as 6 or 7 hours. The calves that were creep fed were only fed two to three weeks of creep. The calves out of the 1st & 2nd calvers were creep fed but ate very little. We do not creep them to show big weaning weights, but just so they will adjust and have a smooth transition from mom to the bunk. The ADG may seem a little high but the start weight is the shrunk weaning weight.
Thoughts about Calving Ease:
Angus bulls have long been known for their paramount calving ease. If you are breeding heifers, Angus is the go-to breed of choice. But what about the socalled “big” birth weight Angus bulls –where do they fit in? The vast majority of mature cows calve unassisted – it is rare for a mature cow to need assistance, except for abnormal deliveries
(backwards, breech, twins, etc.). Data reported to the AAA shows that 99% of Angus cows, second calf or beyond, calve unassisted and only 1% need some type of assistance (abnormal deliveries excluded from this data). Back to the question at hand: where do the “big” birth weight Angus bulls fit in? Example: If you have a bull with a Birth EPD of +5,

he would be 3.2 pounds heavier than the average (breed average BW EPD 1.8) (51.8=3.2 pounds difference). However, his superior growth EPDs mean he will wean bigger calves and put way more money in your pocket than the average Angus bull! This relatively new index provided by the American Angus Association attempts to characterize cattle by combining maternal ($M) and terminal traits ($B) into one index. $C is heavily weighted towards the “terminal” traits found in $B, and $C has a .95 correlation to $B.
As a review of $B, it is a terminal index, comprising of the traits YW, DMI (Dry Matter Intake), Marbling, CW (Carcass Weight), RE (Ribeye), and Fat. $B is designed for herds that send all of their calves (male and female) to the feedyard, retain ownership, and hang them on a quality-based carcass-merit grid.

The 5 L’s of PROFITABILITY in the cattle business:
Live Calves: Having a live calf on the ground is the number one starting point for any profit for the cattleman. We have all seen cows that are too big or too small, but we have never seen a cow that is too fertile. Fertility is not negotiable. It is one trait you can’t get too much of. Cows that don’t breed back can’t produce a calf.
Low Maintenance should also be high on the list. An animal that is easy fleshing, moderate framed, and thrifty will keep more money in your bank account. Most cattlemen will agree that the cost of feed dips into the profit more than anything else.
Lovely Udders with small and well-spaced teats, adequate milk and strong support are necessary for a troublefree experience for a newborn calf. A newborn’s first drink of colostrum is the most important drink that calf will have. An udder that is full of mud from hanging too low or has balloon teats will discourage them from nursing. Choosing the right herd sire for replacement females is very important.
Longevity is a must. Mother cows must continue doing everything right year after year. A cattleman cannot afford to turn his mother cows over every 3 or 4 years. That old cow that has raised a calf for 10 years even though it isn’t the heaviest weaning is more profitable than the cow that raises a heavier calf but doesn’t breed back on time or comes up empty and has to be replaced every two years. His factory is not efficient.
Limit Inconsistency. By stacking generations of the same kind of balanced and predictable genetics, you have a pretty good idea what that cow will produce. The present EPD system which is a valuable tool when used with other information doesn’t have the ability to create cattle that are uniform and consistent phenotypically. Cattle with the same EPDs can look very diverse in conformation, type and structure.

Reputation feeder cattle are no accident. Information adds value. Today, buyers have access to more Angus cattle and generic “black” calves than any other type. Amid the marketing claims and hype, buyers are most likely to focus on cattle that add value to the bestknown Angus genetics.
Ownership transfers vary from traditional auction markets to direct sales to cattle feeders or feedlots. With several outlets for marketing your calf crop, documentation of the value you’ve added is key. Regardless of how and when you intend to sell, tools and strategies for capturing a higher price are available. Information adds value.
Cattlemen who raise Angus-type calves with detailed records that document no implants, antibiotics or animal-derived feeds used in production and still meet all brand specifications can qualify for Certified Angus Beef(R) (CAB (R)) brand Natural. Currently Tyson, National Beef and Niman Ranch produce more than 6 million pounds of CAB brand Natural sold each year.

I really like the thickness and look of this bull, don’t let the shorter ears turn you away from him, he was just born in that real cold snap last year.

Koupal Influence Female Sale
The Koupal’s held their 5th annual female influence sale on December 6th, 2024 at Stockmen’s Livestock. We had several customers consign their bred females for an elite sale and it was a huge success again! We sold 750 head of commercial bred females and averaged $3350 with many of the (AI) bred heifers ranging from $3500-$3700. Exciting times are among us in the cattle industry and high-quality females are in great demand. Our goal going forward is to keep making these females better every year and offering nothing but frontend type.
