The cows are bred to start calving around February 25th. This requires a May 20th bull turn out and AI time breeding. We use cydr’s on the cows to synchronize them for a one time AI after which they are sorted for pasture and hauled to several summer pastures between ten and thirty miles from the ranch headquarters. We prefer to have the cows on their perspective pasture management groups a couple weeks prior to breeding as hauling has been known to cause the cows to skip a cycle. Weather is a factor on this operation and can have an effect on conception rates. It is crucial that we utilize top end herd bulls to clean up any repeat estrus cycles. The cows are restricted to a 60 day breeding window, any cows not pregnant after that are sold as open.
The bulls are developed here at the ranch. Because of excellent quality fall grass reserves, they were left out to utilize forage and not put on feed until late November. They were then fed a TMR ration of 2nd cutting grass hay, 1st cutting grass hay, and screening pellets. The hay is homegrown orchard grass/Timothy mix. There were no legumes fed in the ration.
The bulls are given a complete breeding soundness exam (BSE) and trich tested prior to the sale. They will be identified by their left ear tattoo and a corresponding red ear tag and a yellow lot tag. They are available for viewing at any time during the feed test November first through March first and up to sale day. On sale day they are sorted for size and growth and penned for easy access for viewing.
FEEDING AND DELIVERY
We offer free delivery within 200 miles of Wood V bar X Ranch and will begin making deliveries around April 15th. We make every effort to accommodate the buyer and conditions at their ranch prior to delivery. In addition, we will assist in delivery to locations outside the surrounding states of Idaho.
Bulls will be fed free of charge until delivery. If first delivery attempt is unsuccessful, feed costs will begin accumulating at $3 per head per day. If requested, we will continue to feed the bulls at that rate up until May first. No free delivery on heifers unless accompanied by a bull purchase. Heifers will need to be picked up within 8 days of sale.
The bulls have been on a full vaccination regiment since birth and boosted at weaning and yearling with Bovishield Gold 5, Ultrabac 8, Pillguard Pinkeye, Ivermectin Injectable and Multi min.
The bulls will be penned for viewing the morning of the sale and will remain in their respective pens during the sale. The bulls do not go through the sale ring live. We will sell the bulls in catalog order. Any changes will be announced from the block.
To better identify the calving ease potential of the sale bulls, we have adapted a simple single digit scoring system 1 through 3, utilizing birth wt. (BW), calving ease direct (CED) and actual birth wt. using the top ranking for each and breaking that into 3 categories.
A 3 CE Score indicates 1% to 20% ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW less than 75 lbs.
A 2 CE Score indicates 21% to 50% ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW between 76-86 lbs.
A 1 CE Score indicates 51% or higher ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW over 87 lbs.
As the accuracy of the EPD can also change as the bull records progeny data, this will have an influence on the CED ranking. The bulls are DNA tested for Sire identification and GGP LD for genomic enhanced and improved accuracy of EPD’s. Another indicator of Birth wt. and calving ease is the breed make up of the cow or heifer as well as environment. By breeding high CED bulls for multiple generation to the cows and their resulting progeny, more accurate predictions of calving ease can be made. However this may have a negative affect as multiple generations are developed due to a decrease in pelvic area. It is a good idea to stay focused on CEM and select females with upper percentile rankings for CEM (Calving Ease Maternal).

The heifers are from progressive breeding programs with generations of production records and genetic improvements. They are developed on a forage-based ration; bangs vaccinated and will have had all their pre-breeding vaccinations. The heifers are screened and sorted for any physical defects and potential disposition problems. This year, we welcome consignments from Albertson A bar T Ranch and Houck Brothers Farm, both long-time customers of V bar X Ranch and are both Historic Idaho Centennial Ranches.
We selected VGW Cavalry 203 from the 2023 VGW Vic Westphal Red Angus spring sale. He was featured as lot 3; his EPD profile was what we were in search of as a source of maternal, marbling, and calving ease. Both of his grandsires are well-known sources for Carcass quality and sustainability, contributing to his high ProS, Herd Builder, and Grid Master ranking. Sire to lots 3, 13, 21, 27, 28, 29, 34, 37, 38.
LEM Stockyard 2001 is an ABS stud sire that contributes extra growth with excellent calving ease and carcass traits with exceptional phenotype. Sire to lots 4, 5, 6, 14, 23.
Each Bull has a blood sample collected at weaning time, which is sent to the DNA lab for evaluation. Markers on each individual trait for each bull are identified which in turn are entered into the red angus data base and will add to the accuracy of each individual EPD for each animal. The result, (Genomic enhanced EPDs) increases the bulls EPD accuracies to the point as if they had sired a calf crop. The lab also does a parentage test which identifies the sire and dam precisely. Any potential genetic defects are also ruled out.
SUTH Propulsion 126K is another calving-ease bull purchased in 2023 from the Sutherlin Farms Red Angus bull sale. Powerfully made meat wagon that ranked in the top 1% of the breed for Herd Builder Index and had one of the highest Stayability EPDS in the sale. He scanned a 4.25 IMF, which Ratioed 172. Sire to lots 9, 10, 19, 24, 30, 31, 40, 45, 46.
Laso Superfortress B29E was the sire of 9020 who was Lot 1 in our 2020 Bull Sale. We pulled this exert from his foot note. Our lead off bull is a 76 lb. birth wt, deep-sided high marbling, IMF ratio 147 son. His 6 year old dam maintains a 359 day calving interval, IMF ratio of 107, mppa 100, on four calves, one being a 76C daughter that we retained in our herd. Sire to lots 15, 16, 32.

We selected Red River from Lautenschlager and Sons Red Angus in their 2021 Red Bull rendezvous. As thick of a Red Angus bull as I have seen anywhere. He scanned an impressive 6.13 IMF ratio 108, 13.59 REA ratio100, at 1206 lb. An upper end growth bull without a huge frame he fills all of the spaces with muscle. A flushmate sister sold at the 2020 Bet on Red sale for $16,000.
Knowing he was not a caving ease bull we put him on 2-year-old heifers and had very good success calving. We have since noticed he makes a tremendous combination with our Simmental cross cows. Let’s not overlook the maternal power in this sire as well. The Dory Jiba Cow line goes back to Leachman breeding from the early days when they produced tremendous herd Bulls. The dam is well balanced with a deep rib and capacity, very well formed udder with excellent feet and legs. Sire to lots 18, 20, 41.

His sire Bieber Deep End B597 is a popular high accuracy, growth stud ranking in the top 9% for ProS and top 5% or better for GM, WW, YW, ADG, HPG, Marb, CW and REA. ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
WW Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value)
NOTES:
YW Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
ADG Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)
MILK ..... Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
