Many difficult times have occurred for cattle producers. We are dealing with one of the driest years on record, followed by a very dry year last year. We are very thankful for the cattle genetics that we have developed over the last 55 years. We have had zero tolerance for cattle that have problems of any kind. We strive for trouble free genetics that last for many years. Due to the fact that our cattle have already been put through a rigorous test, they are able to survive much better than most. In the same year of dealing with extreme drought, we are also dealing with skyrocketing input cost. Our cattle have also already been developed for minimal input cost.
This will be our second year of doing a 100 percent online sale. We feel that this type of sale will give every one of our customers equal opportunities of purchasing any of our offering. Bidding will start December 10th and close on the 12th. Please check out our offering on either billpelton.com or diamonddangus.com. Our forage developed, long yearling bulls represent fertility and durability. Most were conceived in the first heat cycle and all were developed on grass hay, salt and mineral. We don’t hide shortcomings behind concentrate feed, foot trimming or hair spray. We demand fertility, good feet, soft temperament, good scrotal and eye appeal. Since the majority of our customers are commercial producers, these bulls are bred and developed for real world condition. Their daughters will become some of your favorite cows.
My father taught me many years ago that any time a person puts too much “emphasis on one trait then, something else important is lost”. So, life is too short to make too many mistakes in the cattle business. I will never forget this great advice. So, what you will find at Diamond D Angus is not extreme in anything, except, EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL.
Hope to hear from you, Mark DeBoo

In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying linebred bulls. The benefits include:
1. If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifites these traits. A line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull.
2. Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits.
3. The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put thorugh a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine.
This is only a prediction by Diamond D Angus. This is not a guarantee. The sire provides only 1/2 of the genetics in determining birth weight.
We calculate adjusted wean efficiency for each cow/calf pair. Adjusted wean efficiency is computed as the ratio of the calf’s adjusted 205 day weight to the cows adjusted weight. The adjusted cow weight is estimated by a process of rating each cow’s body condition and giving her a score. A score of “5” is the median (no adjustment taken), 80 pounds is subtracted from her wight for a score of “6” and 80 pounds is added to her weight for a score of “4”. By adjusting cow weights to equal body condition scores, it rewards cows that produce a bigger calf while maintaining her own body condition. Adjusted cow/calf ratio is shown for each sale bull in the catalog.
Diamond D Angus feels it’s very important to record temperament and udder scores. There are no EPDs on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it’s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don’t meet the standatds we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve the docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which triats you want or need. Many years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from 1-5 in each category. Each of our bulls was given a score for his dam’s udder at time of birth. this anda score for his temperament are listed with each bulls data.

The Pinebank SE9D and 10D are ¾ brothers. Unfortunately the 9D had an injury that ended his life. Fortunately the 9D has left us with some very good daughters. The mother to both 9D and 10D was my favorite cow when I visited the Pinebank herd in New Zealand. I believe that even when people are uncertain about what bull or cow to concentrate on, just by looking at a pedigree and knowing the number of good proven cows and bulls in it, it is a good yard stick on what the offspring will do. Structure and feet are second to none on these good Pinebank 10D sons. Sons selling include 19Y,51Y, 103Y, 115Y, 128Y and 137Y. Average birth weight was 74 pounds.

The DDA Pondera 10u is a bull that was sold at our 2018 sale and we had the opportunity of buying him back. He has grown into one of my favorite herd sires. He was a younger and smaller bull that threw into the multi sire breeding group that ended up siring many calves. This tells me a lot about a bull when he is capableof that. He has Lodge of Wye in his pedigree many times. Also, mother to our great DDA Galetea 859 who is mother to a herd bull we use heavily for multiple years, DDA Great Plains 57R. The DDA Galeta 031 is also the mother ot our DDA B&T 18k. I love the fact that DDA Just Right 30U has sired 12 sons that made it to our sale. As you are able to see, he is a DDA Lodge E5H. No question about the quality of the E5H daughters. They look like the DDA Melisa 824 cow, who stayed in production until she was 22 years old. You will find her in almost every pedigree, here at Diamond D Angus. Grandmother on mothers side will wean here 13th calf this fall. She is a DDA Fahren 21X who is also related to DDA Melisa 824. The sons selling that are sired by DDA Just Right 30U are, 5Y, 32Y, 50Y, 65Y, 76Y, 82Y, 90Y, 100Y, 109Y, 120Y, 162Y, and 184Y. Longevity in our herd indicates many things about an animal. First of all any time an animal gives problems, she is gone. If she loses a calf she is gone. If she has a runt calf she is gone. If she has feet or structure problems she is gone. If she has udder or temperament problems, she is gone. If she does not breed back quickly she is gone. So with that said any time a cow is old, and still here, she has passed a rigid test. We have identified the mother, the grand mother and great grandmother as a cow family that has passed the rigid test. We saved sons of the great Hana 940, DDA Bar Lad 177U and DDA Alliance 142V. The 177U was born when the 940 cow was 18 years old and the 142V she was 19 years old. Cattle selected for the most in anything typically are the most in that trait because they were selected for the most. However any time an animal is the most in one thing they have lost a very important trait or traits in order to be the most in something else. Sons selling of 177U are 20Y, 24Y, 26Y, 38Y, 70Y, 77Y, 87Y, 92Y, 104Y and 117Y. The average birth weight on his 10 sons selling is 73 pounds on mature cows. The 48Y is a sone of DDA Alliance 142V.

The DDA Boss 88U has a mother that weaned 17 natural calves here at Diamond D Angus. She was 17 years old when 88U was born. Function and Longevity is what is most lacking for many cattle producers. Chasing extremes in whatever is popular has destroyed what made Angus famous in the first place. We make sure that is not happing here. The mother to this good bull has Pinebank in both sides of here pedigree. The Pinebank herd in New Zealand also is selecting for function and longevity. The thing that most impressed me at Pinebank was the number of old granny cows they had. Like us they never sell a cow just because she is old. In fact those old granny cows have already proven their ability to stay in production.

In a good maternal sire you will find maternal goodness in every line for many generations. The higher the number of lines filed with good maternal genetics the higher the likelihood of this bull producing good females. So this is why it is important to choose your genetics from someone that has been doing this for many generations. Buy from Diamond D Angus with the knowledge; this is not a new direction for use.

I see Pinebank on both sides of this good pedigree. Bill Hodge called me many years ago and he mentioned that they had two brothers out of the same cow that they were looking to sell. At that moment I felt I was not willing to buy any bull, especially not seeing their mother is what I told Bill. He said in response, Mark you have seen the mother to these two bulls. So he sent me the photo that I sent him many years previously, he said I would recognize it because I was the one that took the photo. So I looked at the photo he emailed me and I see my favorite cow I saw at the Pinebank herd. She was 17 years old at the time of the photo I took. Bill had a photo of the same cow he took about 10 years before the one I took. It was clear to me that this conversation was going to cost some money. I am very happy that we bought both the Pinebank SE 9D and Pinebank SE 10D.

Not many pedigrees you will find cows that were born in 1983 still in a 3 generation pedigree and have zero embryo offspring in it. This is what I see in Diamond Henretta 368 who stayed in production until she was 20 and her daughter DDA Hana 940 who had DDA Bar Lad 177U at 18 years old. We also kept her next son 142V. Diamond Henretta 368 was one of many good cows here at Diamond D Angus when I returned home in 1988. There is no question the 38Y will produce great trouble free daughters that will last for many years.

The mother to our DDA Great Plains 57R was sold as a donor to Loyning Angus and Wyatt DeVries. She is a nearly flawless cow. One of my very favorite cows in the herd. When I sold the 859 cow she was somewhat elderly and sometimes elderly cows have a dif ficult time producing embryos. So in the sale I decided to flush her the first time just to make sure we was able to collect embryos. The 0668 that shows up as sire to dam in this pedigree is the sire that I chose to use on her. I see the same Melissa cow family as that is in our DDA Melissa 824 on very bottom of this pedigree.

I see our DDA May 059 in this good pedigree; she is the same cow as the mother to our DDA Boss 88U. She weaned 17 calves here at Diamond D Angus.

A great pedigree on DDA Pondera 110Y, who scored very high marks on our critique list. The 0668 and 27C are the sire to some of our favorite old cows in our herd. Keep every daughter the 110Y produces. I look at a pedigree like a group of cows. The more good animals in the pedigree, the higher the likelihood of that bull siring good daughters.

There is no question about fertility, drive and durability on DDA Great Plains 57R. Due to Diamond D Angus has been multi sire breeding and DNA testing for parentage there is no question about the breeding ability on a sire. The sons from this type of breeding will have the ability and drive to sire more calves than that hot AI sire that has never seen a cow.

We have very good marks on our critique for the DDA Pondera 149Y. To no surprise his sire is DDA Pondera 10U, who is sired by the great female producing sire 0668. On the mother side of the 149Y is a daughter of DDA Freeman 80R, who is a half-brother sister mating to our DDA Melisa 824. He also has DDA Fahren 21X and the DDA Ginna 850, who is the mother to DDA Fahren 58F. Who was sold to Oak Lane in North Dakota.
He is the sire to many good females there. Fortunately we had a little semen froze and he is the sire to a few good cows here.
