ASSESSING YOUR DOORS Carefully assess the condition of your home’s exterior doors to determine whether they should be upgraded or replaced. Examine the door for ease of operation, loose structural joints, loose panes of glass, excessive warpage or rot. Make a draft detector to check for air leaks - smoke pencils specially designed to identify leaks and drafts are commercially available. If the door is in reasonable condition, it will be far more cost-effective to repair any defects and seal the door against air leakage than to replace it with a new unit. If a door is in very poor condition, and it is not feasible to repair it, replace it with a new unit. Even if the existing door can be repaired, you may want to replace it anyway to improve the appearance and security of your home. If the door does not have a storm door, it is recommended that one be added. The storm door will protect the main door from weather effects in winter and, if equipped with a screened, sliding window, serve as a ventilation opening in summer.
