SUMMER 2017
BY MARYBETH BRUST ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT PEMBROKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
WHY SUMMER LEARNING IS IMPORTANT
Children who practice their reading and math skills during the summer months improve literary and academic performance, develop a love of reading and solving problems, and avoid the dreaded "summer slide". We believe that student and family choice, as well as continued practice throughout the summer, provides students with a readiness to succeed in future academic work. We are asking families to assist us by encouraging our students to practice reading and math throughout the summer. By setting aside a little bit of time each day to practice reading and math, your efforts will enable us to maintain the progress students made this year, and assist us in starting strong in September. Please use this guide as a resource to partner with us and engage our students in reading and math throughout the summer break.
IDEAS TO SUPPORT SUMMER LEARNING HAVE A PLAN Create a summer learning plan with goals and daily activities that students can perform for a set amount of time per day.
REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOR
Set up motivational incentives to keep your child excited about learning. Give lots of praise as kids ultimately want to make their parents happy! Celebrate their achievements with them as they learn a new skill.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Simpler plans are easier to manage. You don't have to be a teacher to help your kids continue to learn over the summer!
SUMMER READING Studies show that access to books during the summer prevents a drastic loss in reading skill. Pembroke students in grades K-6 also have access to LexiaCore5, an online reading skills program throughout the summer months. CREATIVE WRITING JOURNAL Who doesn’t love those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer? As parents we welcome this time of year when our kids can finally kick back, relax, and just be kids – play outdoors, while away the days, break out of the routine of school and just let the days unfold. We also think about all the progress our young scholars have made throughout the last school year – and wonder how much of the knowledge and new learning they’ll retain. One motivating way to enhance what kids experience during the summer while reinforcing and applying previous learning is by taking a little time to reflect, in writing, on all summer has to offer. This summer journal is designed to be a stimulating, creative, fun vehicle that will empower children, not only to chronicle their best days and experiences, but to look at and record even the most ordinary events in extraordinary ways – in other words, to “see with author’s eyes”. In it they’ll be reminded how to capture vivid little slices of life using the writing skills they’ve practiced throughout the school year. Each activity includes an optional summer art project to enhance the writing and further preserve their summer musings. In addition to the kid-friendly suggestions/instructions in the Summer Musings journal, we include a Parent Tips Sheet to help you gently guide, encourage, and inspire your young summer author. Children will participate by writing in their own “Summer Musings Journal” provided – a wonderful summer resource that can become a treasured keepsake in the future. Directions and suggestions precede each writing activity. Simply look over the directions, offer your child some casual guidance, or let your young author go to it on his/her own! The good news is, each writing activity can be approached again and again, every time the young author has a new summer experience! For example – the writing activity titled “Summer Scene” can be used every time the young author visits a new summer place – the seashore, forest, canyon, lake, etc! For added fun, provide your child with a zippered plastic bag that will hold their journal and art supplies: safety scissors, glue stick, markers, crayons, colored pencils. Take this “Author’s Kit” along on vacation and family outings.

SUMMER MUSINGS FOR KIDS! THE SUMMER MUSINGS JOURNAL WILL HELP YOUR CHILD TO: Collect mementos to scrapbook along with their writing. Provide a small history of the interesting person they are today. Impress future generations with their insights and writing ability. Create a treasure of a book for reminiscing Add original artwork to enhance their writing. Allow them to relive their summer days all year round!
Hard to believe, but someday your child will be old! Grown up. They will probably have a car and a job, and a whole serious life. They might even have kids who will think of them as a “grown-up”! Kids who are off from school for the summer will want to hear all about summer in the “olden days” when they were a kid! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a really special book, an ancient treasure of an account that chronicles a long-ago summer? Have your child carry their Summer Musings Journal with them whenever you’re headed out for some summer fun. Put it in a plastic zip lock bag with: • a couple of pencils • colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons • a glue stick • a pair of small, safe scissors (optional) • stickers and stamp pads
