FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

Many thanks for all your efforts relating to the Toy Fair. It was a good idea to show the flag and keep people aware of our existence as a club.

There is little for me to say at this stage, other than to thank all those members who have done something for the Club in 2022 and to wish all who read this all of the best over the festive season.

May 2023 be a good one for you and those close to you.

The AGM is on 28 January 2023. It will be held in Mike Parson’s garage at 10:00

Please make every effort to attend. By then there will be decisions to be made in respect of our joining the Loco Society and the building of the Clubhouse. At present discussions are under way with the Loco Society Committee and I await feedback from them.

All of the best, Mike Smout

Closure

This was the first time that PEMRC participated in this event which is presented quarterly. We were fortunate to have been allocated the entire stage of the main hall of the German Club and we needed all of it and more… Mike Smout demonstrated DCC running with his portable layout, Roel and Mike Smith exhibited their dioramas; Graham Chapman his wooden locomotives whilst Roel had hoped to sell some of the inventory he markets on behalf of others. There was a good turnout at the venue despite the weather. P E was blessed with good rains the night before and there was still a light drizzle when we brought our items to the hall. Thank you to Rob Butler and Etienne Terblanche for assisting and all other members who showed their support during the day. The other exhibitors bar one, were all commercial traders with packaged goods mostly cars.

The organisers presented us with a laser cut award for our participation:

“I opened this video and saw slide after slide of the GD in ways and views I had never seen before. Were these from John's private collection or a member of his operating crew? It has now been 49 years since John's passing, and to see fresh views of his masterpiece is truly special. Thank-you!

“All these photos and more can be seen at G D Lines, for free. Many are John's, but we also have many taken by visitors and operators. Many were donated by the family”.

If it looks familiar it is because Tertius had last year sent a copy of the article about this layout which was reproduced from Continental Modeller to the WA group.

You would not have guessed that the modeller resides in Germany and that the inspiration for this safari based bush layout came from an article in the German MIBA magazine which featured the SAR models made by CMD Models of Austria.

BACHMANN BIG HAULER BIRTHDAY TRAIN

A large scale tank car model was cut open to display an N scale train

A friend’s grandson had an upcoming birthday, and a photo my friend shared inspired me to build this model. It began as a Bachmann Big Hauler tank car to which I added an N scale interior and train. This is the picture that inspired the project.

My friend’s grandson Anderson is fascinated with trains. Anderson is standing in front of Magma Arizona RR No. 6 at the McCormick Stillman Train Park in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Magma Arizona RR was a short line that served copper mining and ranching customers until 1997.

I already had the Arnold N scale locomotive and tender.

I repainted it to match Magma Arizona No. 6. The decals were made for me by Bedlam Creations. I found the figures at a hobby shop and modified them to represent Anderson and his brother Casey, then placed them in the cab.

The tank car started out as a G scale Bachmann Big Haulers single dome tank car. I disassembled it and laid out the area to be cut out, then used a motor tool to remove the plastic. Finally, I sanded it to the finished shape. I built up the interior with shaped foam covered with plain paper towel pieces and joint compound until I had a shape I liked. I made the bridge from stained strip basswood. When I was satisfied with the interior I used craft paints to layer on washes and highlighted details with dry brush techniques.

The large scale track is from LGB. To get everything to fit into the acrylic display case I used, I attached the track to 1/8″ birch plywood, then mounted it to the display base. I used Woodland Scenics ballast on both the large scale and N scale track segments.

I wanted the model to look like it has been out in the weather for years, so I used Vallejo paint, stain, and washes in various earth and rust tones on the entire model. I placed chocks on the wheels and trucks to keep the tank car from moving after it was mounted to the base.

I already had the N scale freight cars, but I repainted the yellow tank car, then added Andersons decals to it and the large scale car. Tichy Train Group supplied the Andersons decals.

There are four ties on the display base to attach the clear acrylic case cover. The ties are basswood, with cut-off pieces of LGB track resting in Ozarks Miniatures tie plates.

I wasn’t really concerned about accuracy for the markings for this project, so I used some G scale decals I had left over from K4 Decals. A little more weathering and a clear flat coat of paint and the Bachmann Big Hauler birthday train was finished. I hope you’re inspired by this project to try something similar yourself. Like so many I have loved all types of modelling from an early age. My interest in trains probably started around 30 years ago. Now that I am retired, I have the opportunity to devote more time to the hobby.

General arrangement drawings like this one were rarely used during construction of the loco but usually drawn after completion of the build as a record of the design.
