the other side of airfix NEW Arthur Ward

there’s a lot more to airfix than many might think and this book is the first attempt to document the myriad successful lines, outside of plastic kits, which contributed to the company’s dramatic growth before a combination of factors forced it into brief liquidation in 1981. written by someone with a lifetime’s fascination for airfix and who has written other books about the better known construction kit side of the business, the other airfix is a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

air force lives Phil Tomaselli what was it like to serve as an airman in the second world war, as a pilot, a bomb aimer, or aerial gunner, or as a trainee pilot in 1913, a Zeppelin chaser during the first world war, or serve as a wren fitter in the fleet air arm or as a member of the ground crew who are so often overlooked in the history of Britain’s air arm? and how can you find out about an individual, an ancestor whose service career is a gap in your family’s history? phil tomaselli, in this readable and instructive book, shows you how this can be done. he describes in fascinating detail the careers of a group air force personnel from all branches and levels of the service.

the us eighth air the us eighth force in europe: air force in eager eagles europe: the Martin Bowman eagle spreads using narrative accounts and new it’s wings insights this book catalogues the dramatic and first-hand oral testimonies of the us army air corps’ bomber crews of the newly created eighth air force that became stationed in east anglia in 1942. it begins with shock of the unannounced Japanese attack on pearl harbor and how it affected the young men who were destined to fly and fight in europe. it is the story of the american’s first encounters with the luftwaffe, heavy nazi air defences and the wartime strictures that Britain had already endured for three years. these are their memories.

Martin Bowman

this book describes the period when the american daylight offensive faltered and nearly failed and recalls the terrible losses suffered by liberators on the low-level attack on the ploesti oilfields in romania and by the B-17s on the notorious schweinfurt and regensburg raids which entered 8th air force folklore as ‘Black thursday’. fascinating anecdotes, eye-witness accounts and the hard-won experiences of the battle-scarred american ‘fly-boys’ reveal the grim realities of air combat at four miles high above enemy occupied europe, Berlin and the ruhr.

the men who Breached the dams

the damBuster who cracked the dam

Colin Higgs, Bruce Vigar

Alan W Cooper

Arthur G Thorning

first published to acclaim in 1982, this was author alan cooper’s first publication before he went on to become a prolific writer of aviation history. as we approach the 70th anniversary of the dam Buster raids, this re-print will make a timely addition to the library of any enthusiast wishing to mark the occasion, and any curious readers who wish to expand their knowledge of this key operation in world war ii history. painstaking research went into every aspect of an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world.

on 25 september 1939 melvin young reported to no.1 initial training unit. on 15 may the order for operation chastise was issued – the raid to be flown the next night, 16/17 may. the plan for the operation was that three waves of aircraft would be employed. the first wave of nine aircraft, led by gibson, would first attack the mohne dam, then the eder followed by other targets as directed by wireless from 5 group hQ if any weapons were still available. at 02.58 gunners at castricum-an-Zee reported shooting down an aircraft and several batteries also reported firing at it. aJ-a crashed into the sea. over the north sea, guy gibson called melvin on the radio…there was no reply.

NEW

Borne of a well-established partnership between the authors colin higgs and Bruce vigar, this is an evocative and beautifully crafted piece of work that is sure to appeal to the aviation fraternity as well as serving as a memorial to the veterans whose exploits characterise this most daring and iconic of raids. as we approach the 70th anniversary of the 1943 raid, it seems fitting that we should have such an account to mark the occasion, consolidating the collective experiences of a selection of aircrew who contributed to the proceedings.

a new assessment of the life of one of the most famous and controversial airmen of the second world war, this book covers guy gibson’s sometimes troubled upbringing and the impact on him of his time at st edward’s school, oxford. in particular, the story of his career in the raf is relayed, including his stunning leadership achievement in creating no 617 squadron and leading its attack on the dams of western germany. the much discussed circumstances of his unnecessary death and the theories which have grown up around it are examined, as well as his legacy – he remains a great British hero almost 70 years after his death in a world utterly different to the one he knew.

many of the 617 squadron crews who took part in the famous attacks on the mohne, eder and sorpe dams and also the raids on the dortmundems canal did not return. this book takes the reader to many of the crash sites that resulted. they include the coast off texel, rees, marbeck, emmerich, hamm, ostonnen, the former airfield at gilze-rijen in holland and castricum-aan-Zee. the dortmund-ems canal sites are noordhorn, recke, Bergeshovede, ladbergen and den ham in holland. all these sites can be visited within a week’s tour by car or public transport. the book is illustrated with then-and-now photographs of the sites, the personnel involved and the aircraft originally flown.

this book is a timely reminder that there is a lot more to this squadron than their exploits on the dams. 70 years on, the collective achievements of the men who made up 617 squadron are relayed, making for an impressive tribute and a celebration of the various aerial endeavours that characterise the group’s history, borne out of an intense spirit of camaraderie and an exceptional level of professionalism

damBusters dvd BookaZine: damBusters no. 617 squadron raf Bomber command is world-famous for its daring raids on the mohne, eder and sorpe dams, the dortmund-ems canal and the attacks on the german ship tirpitz. this dvd slide show contains rarely seen photographs of the squadron’s aircraft, crews and other behind-the-scenes operations. each image is accompanied by a narrative from charles hewitt that conveys the location and history surrounding the subject in question.

the mission became popularly known as the dambusters raid, and was immortalised in a 1954 war film. it was one of the most famous air operations of world war ii. the spectacular, daring nature of the raid was a significant boost to British morale. But militarily, it was a failure. the squadron failed to breach the sorpe dam; and the disruption to the german war production was minimal. water supply in the ruhr valley was back to original levels six weeks later. the aircrew, however, became famous as war heroes, and the leader of the raid, wing commander guy gibson, was awarded the victoria cross.

winged warriors

Britain on the Brink

the raf’s air war in liBya

Thomas Paul McDonald

Jim Wilson

Dave Sloggett

winged warriors touches on many aspects of military service but it is not about war or war-fighting; it is about real people and their highs and lows, ordinary people who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances. it is those crews who stand out in winged warriors: true warriors in every sense of the word, blessed with an irrepressible sense of humour regardless of circumstance, a humour that was typically British and very typically raf.

the book focuses on the implications for Britain of the covert deployment by the soviet union of ballistic nuclear missiles ninety miles off the us coast. it follows the crisis as it developed in london, washington and moscow. it looks at secret planning in the uk for world war iii, and the activities of the Jigsaw group (Joint inter-services group for the study of all-out war). it also examines how close the uk went to activating ‘visitation’, the code name for the movement of parts of the British state into a secret bunker referred to in whitehall as ‘the Quarry’. Britain on the Brink also reveals the major strategic re-think the cuban crisis forced on prime minister macmillan and the British government.

the uprising in libya in the spring of 2011 took the world by surprise. the gaddafi regime’s brutal attempts at suppressing the uprising, however, soon prompted the international community to respond. nato agreed to impose a no-fly zone across libya which was led by Britain, france and the usa. for the British prime minister, david cameron, the deployment of raf and royal navy assets in support of un resolution 1973, came at a time when severe cuts to the uk’s defence spending were in the process of being enacted. with the royal navy aircraft carriers and their harrier jets no longer available, would the uk be able to mount operations 3,000 miles away?

“This book provides a very valuable insight into a period in history that has still to be adequately discovered in print.” firetrench

this is the first volume of a most impressive tribute and accurate four part work that uniquely presents a complete account of the air operations throughout ‘market-garden’ in september 1944 when British, us and polish airborne troops made a gallant attempt to seize and hold bridges across the lower rhine in holland as a springboard for crossing into germany. ‘market’ , the aerial side of the proceedings, was at the time the largest airborne operation in history. in this unprecedented and insightful account, the exploits of the first allied airborne army are relayed in full detail; supplemented with historical notes regarding the ground operations, this is sure to offer an unparalleled account of the events as they unfolded in the skies above holland.

this is the second volume in a meticulously researched four-part series that provides a comprehensive insight into the aerial exploits at operation ‘market garden’ in september 1944. in an interesting method of presenting the information, the author’s arrangement of British, american, dutch and german personal narrative interspersed with factual material offers a more personalised view of the war through the eyes of the hard-pressed allied airborne troops who were actually there in the thick of the action. time-lines detail the day to day events happening in all areas of the battle both on the ground and in the air and also add weight to the story in hand, whilst carefully selected archive images work to supplement the text perfectly.

Behind the wire sailor’ malan

E.W. Maslen-Jones

Philip Kaplan

Philip Kaplan

the debt owed by 14th army to 656 air op squadron in the reconquest of Burma was immeasurable. from 1943 until the end of the war, these three flights of five tiny auster aircraft provided air observation for the whole of the army fighting the Japanese in the jungle below. a likely explanation, if ted maslenJones is typical of his colleagues, is that they were essentially modest men who, in their own eyes, were only doing their job and were in fact rather privileged to be sailing above the canopy while the ground troops were slogging it out somewhere below them. several times the author refers to the sheer exhilaration of flying over that beautiful but still unhappy country.

philip kaplan presents us here with a riveting account of the allied experience behind enemy lines, detailing the trials and tribulations experienced by the British and american airmen who were shot down in european skies during world war two, to be incarcerated ‘behind the wire’ in enemy camps. with eloquence and a clear enthusiasm for the subject at hand, the author describes how various individuals adjusted to their incarceration. whilst some set their minds resolutely on escape, and dreamt up plots and plans to achieve this end, others retreated, away from their comrades and into them selves as the grim reality of their predicament pushed them ever deeper into debilitating depression.

malan was thirty years of age during the Battle of Britain, old for a fighter pilot, but his maturity gave his leadership a firm authority. the Battle of Britain produced many airmen of great skill and accomplishment; high achievers who made their mark in one of history’s most memorable and demanding campaigns. But only a few of these men distinguished themselves in such a way as to become legends in their own lifetimes. among the greatest of these was sailor malan. here is the story of this talented man, eloquently told by philip kaplan who manages to strike a balance between objectivity and reverence in order to commit malan’s story to paper.

horiZons – the history of the air cadets

comet! the world’s first Jet airliner

Wing Commander HR’Ray’ Kidd

Don Berliner

the concept of organizing teenage air enthusiasts into locally backed squadrons officially supported by the royal air force was first mooted in the late 1920s. the idea proved a success and thousands of youngsters were able to learn about aircraft, aerodynamics, navigation, mechanics and other subjects not taught in schools. the organization was to become known as the air training corps (atc) and as war loomed it was considered a useful raf recruitment tool to attract potential airmen and ground crew. this book looks at all aspects of the air cadet’s history and tradition, including the raf sections of the combined cadet force attached to public and grammar schools. it concludes with an analysis of what subjects and courses are currently available with many past and present illustrations.

this new volume from the respected and wellregarded aviation historian and author graham simons is sure to appeal to all aviation enthusiasts, including as it does a wide array of historical sources and archival information drawn together into one consolidated volume – the closest to a definitive study of the craft than any produced before. extensively illustrated throughout, the book features details lifted directly from enquiry and salvage reports, much of which has never been published before and offers a unique insight into the failures and tragedies that blighted the early days of development, laying down lessons that were ultimately to benefit later designs.

NEW

this is the final volume in a three-volume set covering more than 300 types of surviving world war ii aircraft. this volume includes the lessglamorous, practical crafts that were nonetheless just as vital in their way as the celebrated craft featured in the two previous volumes, focussing on surviving fighter and bomber aircraft. the aircraft featured here are those that served absolutely vital purposes, like the army’s Jeeps and trucks and the navy’s freighters and landing craft. clearly, they made the great machine work, for without the transports, trainers, gliders , helicopters, scout air-planes and the others, the fighters and bombers wouldn’t have had fuel for their engines, nor bullets for their guns, nor food for their crews.

first published to acclaim in 1985, this book is set to be a timely release, in line with the 70th anniversary of the outset of the raids, near approaching in november 2013. as in his previous books, alan cooper has painstakingly researched all the details of the raids, telling the stories of individual crews who flew on them, of those who returned safely and those who were shot down, becoming pows or evading capture, either returning to the uk or remaining at large in occupied europe. he tells of the heroism of the pilots and crews grappling with heavily -loaded bombers against night-fighters, often nursing stricken aircraft back to base, with many failing to return.

first published to acclaim in 1992, this book deals with the exploits of Bomber command during their offensive against german industry in the ruhr during world war ii. the author begins by describing the role of Bomber command and goes on to define the ruhr area and its great importance in terms of industrial output to the germans. the author provides the statistics for bombers despatched, the number which actually got to the targets and those which never made it for one reason or another. air Battle of the ruhr is a complete overview of a major aspect of the air war against mainland germany.

in July 1943 a series of heavy bombing raids virtually destroyed the north german city of hamburg. in one night alone some 40,000 people were killed largely as a result of the terrible ‘firestorm’. to this day controversy rages as to the morality of these attacks and their consequences. with his trademark thoroughness martin middlebrook has delved deep into the archives to uncover the facts. as ever he draws on copious eyewitnesses and participants – a total of 547 British, american and german.

this book looks at the origins of the world war two commands and their outline histories until 1968. the organisational change caused reequipment, base changes and increasing economic constraints – an all-too familiar story. the royal navy was now responsible for the uk’s nuclear deterrent in the form of their polaris submarines, so the raf’s v-Bomber force were now relegated to tanker operations, with the exception of the lone vulcan that was sent to the falklands conflict. this book looks at the operations that took place during strike commands existence, the aircraft they flew and the men who flew them.

By the end of the operation, the list of casualties was extensive. this important episode within the wider history of d-day is enlivened in classic Bowman fashion, featuring both extensive historical notes as well as deeply personal accounts of endurance and individual gallantry.

faBulous NEW flying Boats

John French, Edited by Anthony Dyer

Leslie Dawson

John french first took up flying in 1937 with the university of london air squadron, and this move was to signal the start of a long and varied career in flight which would see him involved in some of the most iconic wartime exploits of the twentieth century. posted to gibraltar in the midst of war, he flew sorties in support of the north african landings during operation torch, a particularly interesting episode in second world war history. his exploits are relayed in vivid, first hand detail, offering fresh insights into this period of history from a man engaged at the heart of the action.

the history of the development and operations of flying boats in the early twentieth century is a vibrant one, full of colourful characters and experimentation. in ‘fabulous flying Boats’, leslie dawson captures this spirit of dynamism, reminding us of the most successful early pioneers of the seaplanes development, including a little known and oftoverlooked rival to the wright Brothers, working to put their mutual successes in context. he goes on to describe, in clear and vivid detail, and using first hand-accounts, what it was like to be aboard one of the resulting huge passenger flying boats, as air crew and as a passenger.

voices in flight: adventurous the fleet air empires Phillip E Sims arm NEW Malcolm Smith

the author malcolm smith has been the editor of Jabberwock, the biannual journal of the fleet air arm museum, for a short while and has inherited the complete archive of editions dating back to the formation of soffaam in 1979. in browsing through these, it quickly became apparent to him that they provided a unique archive of reminiscence of the men and (occasionally) women who served in, or have been associated with, the fleet air arm since its formation in 1918. the fleet air arm were the branch of the British royal navy responsible for the operation of naval aircraft, and its history is a varied one as these accounts attest.

this is a story from a bygone age recalling the most successful flyingboat airliner ever built. designed to a specification for imperial airways, then Britain’s national airline, it carried passengers and, more importantly, mail throughout the British empire. the airliner offered luxurious travel for the privileged few, every journey being an adventure shared by passengers and crew. this is the tale of the realisation of a dream and the efforts of those who made it possible. during world war ii, the military sunderland version became an icon.

NEW cockpit from Borneo to on laughtercommander – a lockerBie silvered wings Geoffrey Leeming Gail Strever-Morkel navigator’s NEW geoff leeming belongs to an elite this well written and life group of helicopter pilots. he thoroughly researched Bruce Gibson

previously self-published by the author, this book charts the course of a dramatic career as a wing commander. living through one of the most dynamic periods in the history of military and aviation development, Bruce gibson saw events play out from his elevated aerial position. his fascinating story will appeal to a wide audience, focussing as it does not only upon aviation concerns but also on his eventful personal life.

PEN & SWORD AVIATION 2013

describes his flying experiences in under-powered,and by today’s hightech standards, basic choppers such as the single-engined whirlwinds and its successor, the wessex, whether in turbulent tropical conditions, windswept mountains or low level over raging seas. much of geoff’s flying career was in search and rescue (sar) calling for the highest flying skills and the coolest of nerves. in addition to many great sar accounts this book begins with accounts of action in Borneo in the 1960s and ends with geoff’s fascinating account of his flying involvement in the aftermath of the pan am lockerbie disaster.

biographical account of the life and times of a south african ww2 pilot (the author’s father) is sure to appeal widely. the story is by necessity highly personal, drawing on family history and changing lifestyles as the central figure fights his way through a series of challenging experiences, flying coastal strike missions in the mediterranean and north africa, then in the far east against the Japanese. the story is full of personal perspectives and gets off to a thorough and engrossing operational start.

voices from the luftwaffe cracking the luftwaffe comBat reports luftwaffe Bob Carruthers Edited and introduced by Bob codes Carruthers

"it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy ...voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders." hermann göring this is the history of the luftwaffe through the eyes of those who served in combat. the rise of the luftwaffe from the ashes of the great war is traced through recollections of luftwaffe personnel who manned the gliders and perpetuated the charade that this was a civilian undertaking. the heady optimism generated by the stunning successes of the Blitzkrieg era are soon overturned by the grim experiences of the Battle of Britain.

Bletchley park, or ‘station x’, was home to the most famous codebreakers of the second world war. the 19th-century mansion was the key centre for cracking german, italian and Japanese codes, providing the allies with vital information. after the war, many intercepts, traffic-slips and paperwork were burned (allegedly at churchill’s behest). the truth about Bletchley was not revealed until f. winterbotham’s the ultra secret was published in 1974. however, nothing until now has been written on the german air section.

By air to Battle the spitfire Bob Carruthers

Edited: Bob Carruthers

first published in 1945 and comprising a compilation of fascinating primary accounts of airborne combat as told by the very men who fought in the action, ‘By air to Battle’ is the official history of airborne operations by British paratroops in world war ii. spanning the introduction of the central landing establishment to the end of the war, we follow the heroic exploits of the British first and sixth airborne divisions. never before available in e-book form ‘By air to Battle’ is an inspiring and at times very comic description of the true events that took place at such historic conflicts as arnhem, the rhine, normandy and Bruneval as well as the airborne forces in north africa, sicily and italy. this is a must-read for any military history enthusiast.

this unique contemporary account produced from contemporary reports and debriefs provides a primary source insight into reality of being a fighter pilot in world war ii. fascinating reading for military enthusiasts and anyone interested in the true story of world war ii.

the Battle of Britain

NEW

publishEd may 2013

the Battle of Britain was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces, and was also the largest and most sustained aerial bombing campaign to that date. the failure of germany to achieve its objectives of destroying Britain’s air defences, or forcing Britain to negotiate an armistice or an outright surrender, is considered its first major defeat and a crucial turning point in world war ii. By preventing germany from gaining air superiority, the battle ended the threat that adolf hitler would launch operation sea lion, a proposed amphibious and airborne invasion of Britain. edited by emmy award winning author and historian Bob carruthers, this book encompasses the strategic, operational and tactical aspects of the Battle of Britain.

if it looks right, it will probably fly right—a tired old saying among airmen, but one that persists. think if you will of the handful of aeroplanes that most people would probably agree are the best-looking examples of all. the list is short but distinguished and the proof is in the enthusiastic common view of most pilots who have flown them—for nearly all, it was love at first sight and first flight. for most that little list includes the vickers-supermarine spitfire, the douglas dc-3, the hawker hunter, the lockheed constellation, the concord, and the north american mustang.

Martin Bowman the ‘wooden wonder’ was probably the most versatile combat aircraft that operated on all fronts in world war two and was still giving valuable service in first-line service after 1945 when it enjoyed a limited renaissance both at home, in germany and abroad until the advent of jet aircraft. martin Bowman’s well-tried and respected formula of incorporating background information with scores of raf, dominion, and overseas pilots and navigators’ personal narratives, is employed here once again to great effect.

formed in 1915, and still operational today, 14 squadron is one of the raf’s longest serving and most senior squadrons. spending the first thirty years of its operational life in the middle east, the history of this squadron is a rich one, but one which, until now, has gone largely unrecorded. napier effectively brings together all the historical scraps and shreds of stories which make up the collective history of this unit, from 1915 -1945, a period of great military and social upheaval.

following the recent unveiling of the monument to Bomber command in london’s green park, the publication of this lovingly crafted account of the exploits of oft overlooked 1 group is set to be a timely one. patrick otter combines an appropriate level of detail regarding operations, aircraft, bases and incidents, with accounts of human endurance and squadron fraternity, which works to create a thoroughly well researched account of the wartime proceedings of 1 group which is rooted firmly in humanity.

in this classic account of one of the neglected yet crucial theatres of the air war roy nesbit, himself a survivor of strike aircraft of coastal command, describes these complex battles from British and german records, assisted by first-hand accounts from some of the brave airmen who took part. he also analyses the effects of the tactics employed on the german war economy, with some startling conclusions. the result is a fascinating, clearly written and vivid history of events that were little publicized during the war for reasons of security. his book includes detailed diagrams of some of the key attacks and features some astonishing photographs taken in action.

Jack northrop’s flying wings – or to give them their more correct title, all wing aircraft – were some of the most spectacular, graceful and elegant flying machines ever to grace the skies. a design as aeronautically pure as a flying wing had huge advantages over conventional aircraft design. this advantage was that drag was reduced to an absolute minimum. as a result of this minimum drag, the performance of the flying wing became unequalled in speed, range and operating economy.

southern and west country airfields of the d-day invasion

fighters under construction in world war two

Peter Jacobs

Graham Simons

as part of the aviation heritage trail series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area – in this case west sussex, hampshire, dorset, wiltshire and cornwall. this book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favourite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included.

there has been bookshelf after bookshelf of books compiled, written and published about British aircraft, the royal air force and the activities of its pilots during world war two. tales of derring do, bravery and gallantry quite rightly litter the bookshelves and libraries, but little has appeared in print about a specific band of unsung heroes, those that designed, built and maintained the fighting equipment used to eventually defeat the enemy. featured here are images of some of the most iconic aircraft of the conflict in development.

the forgotten few

the first BlitZ

Adam Zamoyski

much has been written about the Blitz on Britain in the second world war, but few appreciate that the germans attempted a similar campaign in the first world war. the book also covers British reaction to this, covering raids on towns and cities, and describing through firsthand accounts the tragedy, heroism and pathos which the air campaign produced.

By the beginning of 1941 there was a fully fledged polish air force operating alongside the raf. with 14 squadrons it was larger than any other of the air forces from nazioccupied europe. over 17,000 men and women passed through the ranks of the polish air force while it was stationed in the uk. they shot down 745 enemy aircraft, with a further 175 unconfirmed. they dropped thousands of bombs and laid hundreds of mines, flying 102,486 sorties and notching up a total of 290, 895 operational flying hours. they achieved this at a cost of 1,973 killed and 1,388 wounded. they won 342 British gallantry awards.

Andrew Hyde

“… a clear winner from the first page. author andrew hyde does a fine job providing the reader both a wide overview of the campaign as well as up close personal descriptions of each individual attack and the results thereof.” indy squadron dispatch

a decorated first world war pilot, hans Baur was one of the leading commercial aviators of the 1920s before being pitched into the thick of it as personal pilot to a certain ‘herr hitler’. hitler, who loathed flying, felt safe with Baur and would allow no one else to pilot him. as a result, an intimate relationship developed between the two men and it is this which gives these memoirs special significance. hitler relaxed in Baur’s company and talked freely of his plans and of his real opinions about his friends and allies.

day fighters in defence of the reich presents a unique look at the german defences as they struggled to cope with the threat posed by the two american strategic air forces which were charged with destroying germany’s critical war industries and wresting control of the air over the reich from the luftwaffe. the book provides a summary of the defensive effort against each mission in the form of a brief narrative and a table of statistics for every luftwaffe unit taking part.

fire over heathrow

the Broken seal

Susan Ottaway, Foreword by HRH Duke of Edinburgh

Ladislas Fargo

one and a half minutes after take-off on the clear and sunny afternoon of 8 april 1968, the number 2 engine of Boac Boeing 707 g-arwe broke away from its mounting pylon and fell, tumbling in flames. captain cliff taylor managed an extremely smooth touchdown about 400 yards beyond the heathrow runway threshold and the aircraft came to a stop 1,400 yards further along the runway. the cabin crew had the doors open and passengers began escaping from the starboard over-wing exit and then via chutes at the forward and rear galley doors. the rear escape chute was damaged by the fire and burst but, of the 126 people aboard, most of the 121 survivors had escaped before the arrival of the main fire and rescue services. for her bravery in trying to rescue the remaining passengers on that day Jane harrison was awarded the george cross.

the Broken seal: the story of “operation magic” and the pearl harbor disaster explores the questions of why, if the united states knew the Japanese codes, did we not anticipate the december 7, 1941 surprise attack and how did the Japanese spy system in hawaii operate? as a chief of research and planning in the special warfare Branch of the office of naval intelligence, the author had access to both Japanese and american classified material to write this study. the author’s intent was to independently ascertain the validity of earlier claims that the pearl harbor attack could have been avoided.

lightning eJect flying Peter Caygill catalinas the english electric lightning entered raf squadron service in 1960 and continued flying in the interceptor role until 1988. it had a stunning world-beating performance with a top speed in excess of mach 2 and a climb rate that would take it to 40,000 feet in a little over 3 minutes. the aircraft’s safety record, however, left much to be desired. this book looks at lightning accidents and incidents in chronological order using the official accident reports, Board of enquiry findings and firsthand accounts from pilots. it puts the reader very much ‘in the cockpit’.

infamous aircraft

short sunderland

Andrew Hendrie

Robert Jackson

Andrew Hendrie

with a remarkable lifting capacity and endurance, this long-range twinengine aircraft could absorb a great deal of punishment and still return home after flights lasting an entire day and covering thousands of miles. it was employed as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft, as a bomber and torpedo-bomber, as an antisubmarine weapon, as a mine layer, as a special operations machine and as a search-and-rescue craft by day and night. it ferried stores, mail and people – many of them sick and injured – across the world’s oceans. in this book andrew hendrie tells the story of the "flying cats", of their achievements and exploits, of the heroism of many of the crews and the problems they had to endure.

many aircraft, some famous and some rare, gained a reputation for being difficult to fly and sometimes downright dangerous. this book looks at some of the worst culprits over a period spanning world war one to the age of supersonic flight.

in 1933, the air ministry issued a specification for a general-purpose four-engine flying boat capable of operating from the outposts of the empire. the result was the remarkable sunderland, built by short Brothers. this book covers the development of the short sunderland and its operation in the second world war. the sunderland’s crew’s ability to take on combats with six or more enemy fighters earned it the luftwaffe’s nickname of the "flying porcupine". the aircraft’s “maid of all work” role over the eastern mediterranean is covered in detail, and includes recces for the royal navy, evacuations from yugoslavia, greece and crete, as well as attacks on enemy submarines.

the fear in the sky

missing Believed killed

the armed rovers

Pat Cunningham DFM

Stuart Hadaway

Roy Conyers Nesbit

a profound respect for the raf aircrews of the second world war led aviation historian pat cunningham dfm to record the experiences of ten men who volunteered to risk their lives on bombing operations, for some time Britain’s only effective method of striking back. these young men came from disparate backgrounds but, having qualified in their specialist categories, were skilfully merged as interdependent crew-members. pat cunningham dfm has written this book in tribute to the aircrew association.

during the early years of ww2 it soon became apparent that the system for tracing the remains of raf aircrew deemed ‘missing Believed killed’ was totally inadequate. the missing research section (mrs) of the air ministry was set up in 1941 to deal with this problem. it collected and collated intelligence reports from a wide variety of official, unofficial and covert sources in an attempt to establish the fate of missing aircrew, using forensic or semi-forensic work to identify personal effects passed on through clandestine channels or bodies washed up on Britain’s shores.

By far the most dangerous of the raf operations during the second world war were daylight attacks on enemy shipping, yet little has been written about this aerial campaign and the brave airmen who took part. in particular the intense air-sea battles that were fought in the mediterranean have been neglected in histories of the war in north africa and italy. roy nesbit, in this classic account, sets the record straight by describing in vivid detail how a few raf squadrons were successful in destroying supplies that were vital to the italian and german armies during the fighting in libya, egypt and tunisia.

gunned as the royal hellenic air force had to when mussolini’s italy dragged greece into war on 28 october 1940. without warning, as italian forces poured over the frontier from albania, the rhaf’s paltry effective line-up of 128 battle-worthy aircraft, most of them obsolete, were pitted against the 463 fielded by the regia aeronautica, whose pilots had honed their skills in the spanish civil war. on the greek side, though, aces such as marinos mitralexis, with his audacious ramming of an italian bomber on the fifth day of the war ensured that morale in the rhaf remained high.

flying over 47 different types of military aircraft in war and peace. alastair mackie began his operational career flying wellington bombers over the north african desert war until converting to the B24 liberator. he watched the famous opening barrage at the opening of el alamein from the air and became involved in supplying the besieged island of malta together with hunting german ships in the mediterranean.

“at cambridge, as an undergraduate of st John’s, i realised that, more than anything else, i wanted to fly.” a lifelong fascination and love of flying and air-crafts is fuel for this engaging autobiography by g J christopher paul, cB, dfc; a man bitten by the aviation bug at an air display at the age of four, and thereafter a devotee. his remarkable raf career was followed by an eventful civilian career in aviation, which saw him organise rallies at places such as sywell, encouraging ‘flying for fun’.

mosQuito: menacing the reich

liBerator: the consolidated B-24

B-29: superfortress

stratofortress

Graham M Simons

Martin Bowman

Graham Simons

this book is full of first-hand accounts from the crews that flew the ‘mossie’ in its roles as a bomber, long-range reconnaissance and lowlevel strike aircraft. the author has gathered together many of the most exciting operational reports that cover the period from the type’s introduction until the end of world war ii. the text is interwoven with the background history of the personnel and squadrons, the purpose of the operations undertaken and their often devastating results.

the consolidated B-24 liberator was almost certainly the most versatile second world war Bomber. apart from its bombing role in all theatres of operation, the B-24 hauled fuel to france during the push towards germany, carried troops, fought uboats in the atlantic and, probably most important of all, made a vital contribution towards winning the war in the pacific. its most famous single exploit is possibly the raid on the ploesti oilfields in august 1943.

the Boeing B-29 superfortress was a four-engined heavy bomber flown primarily by the united states in world war two and the korean war. the B-29 remained in service in various roles throughout the 1950s. the British royal air force flew the B-29 and used the name washington for the type, and the soviet union produced an unlicensed copy as the tupolev tu-4. the B-29 was the progenitor of a series of Boeing-built bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, trainers and tankers including the variant, B-50 superfortress. without doubt there is a clear, strong requirement to ‘put the record straight’.

Boeing’s mighty B-52 stratofortress has seen continuous operational service with the united states air force since the type was introduced in 1957. the aircraft has been upgraded several times and has assumed many different new roles since it was originally conceived and then provided the key airborne platform for america’s strategic nuclear force. it is predicted that it will serve as a front-line aircraft until 2040.

upward and onward: life of air vicemarshal John Howe CB, CBE, AFC Bob cossey, foreword by air vice marshal george Black. John howe was posted to no 2 squadron saaf and sent to korea to fly with south africa’s contribution to the war in support of the un forces. there he flew the mustang f-51d fighter-bombers in front-line action during his first tour. as the political situation in south africa became more extreme he resigned from the saaf and came to england where joined the raf. during the suez crisis he operated as a forward ground controller and landed on the beaches with 40 commando.

the red air force at war: air comBat over the eastern front and korea Sergei Kramarenko sergei kramarenko was a lucky man. as a soviet fighter pilot, an ace, he fought in two wars – first against the luftwaffe, then the us air force – and survived. this is his story. in over ten years as a front-line fighter pilot he took part in a revolution in the development of combat flying. his candid, intensely personal and unflinching account gives a rare inside view of life in the red air force.

air war malta Jon Sutherland and Diane Canwell this is the story of the historic air defence of malta by the raf against the combined attacking forces of the italian and german air forces. the first air raids came on 11 July and from then on were an almost daily feature of life for the maltese occupants and the island was in a state of siege. the loss of this strategic point in the central mediterranean would threaten the major supply routes to the British army in north africa and deprive the royal navy of a vital base. this book follows the island’s wartime history, describing the heavily outnumbered raf defence against the many air-raids and how the small bomber force took the battle to italian shores.

stirlings in action with the airBorne forces Dr Dennis J. Williams this is the history of two raf squadrons who shared the task of dropping agents and supplies on behalf of the soe, took part in the d-day landings, suffered heavy losses at arnhem, dropped sas troops behind enemy lines and were involved with the rhine crossing that sealed germany’s fate in 1945. Both squadrons flew the short stirling marks iii and iv. although there was a healthy rivalry between personnel serving on 190 and 620 squadrons, there was also a deep sense of camaraderie that forged bonds between them.

Brief glory Alex Revell arthur rhys davids was shot down and killed in october 1917. he was just twenty and had been flying over the western front with 56 squadron for six months. he had entered the royal flying corps direct from eton college. in his brief operational career he was awarded the military cross twice and the distinguished service order once. in the opinion of the commanding officer of his squadron he deserved the victoria cross. alex revell has written a sensitive and deeply moving biography. it is based on letters from rhys davids early boyhood days at eton to his last letter written on the night before he died.

v weapons hunt Col Roy M Stanley II USAF (RET) this remarkable book tells, through words an images, the story of the allied discovery, understanding and campaign against the vengeance weapons. written by a trained intelligence analyst and aerial photo interpreter, the book picks out the air photographs that found the breakthrough in this vital campaign. this is a scholarly and authoritative work which lifts the lid on how allied intelligence provided the information to defeat this insidious threat before it caused not only massive destruction but the delay of the normandy invasion.

this remarkable book traces the varied fortunes of the royal air force in the 1930s, and show it readied itself for the mighty german onslaught in the summer of 1940 and won a great victory by the narrowest margins. it provides a comprehensive account of the Battle of Britain, including the day-by-day summaries of the battle. it is illustrated with photographs and maps, an appendix of the aircraft used by the royal air force and a list of all pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain from July 10 to october 31 1940.

this versatile, rugged aircraft was a joint anglo/french project and first flew in september 1968, becoming operational with both the raf and armee del’air in 1972/3. the Jaguar’s multi-role design made it easy to adapt for the ground-attack, reconnaissance, interceptor and maritime strike roles. many of the Jaguar pilot’s first hand accounts recall their involvement in war and peace. the aircraft was used extensively by both the raf and french air forces in the gulf war in 1991 and in eastern european conflicts where the aircraft distinguished itself as reliable and potent.

soviet bombers played a vital role in defeating the germans on the eastern front, yet their contribution is often forgotten. this graphic memoir should help to set the record straight. the author, a leading soviet bomber pilot who flew throughout the conflict, tells his story from the desperate days of the german assault in 1941 to the point where germany was invaded and the nazis were destroyed. he gives a vivid account of his experiences during over 300 bombing missions in the dangerous skies over russia, the ukraine, poland and germany. his story is compelling reading.
