the BomBer Command war diarieS Martin Middlebrook, Chris Everitt Bomber Command’s campaign started on the very first day of the Second world war and ended within a few hours of the final victory in europe five and a half years later. it was an attempt to win the war in europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians have only recently begun to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. the Bomber Command war diaries has become the standard basic work of reference on this extraordinary campaign. this edition includes retrospective observations and a new appendix.

first published to acclaim in 1985, this book is set to be a timely release, in line with the 70th anniversary of the outset of the raids, near approaching in november 2013. as in his previous books, alan Cooper has painstakingly researched all the details of the raids, telling the stories of individual crews who flew on them, of those who returned safely and those who were shot down, becoming Pows or evading capture, either returning to the uk or remaining at large in occupied europe.
during the Second world war raf Bomber Command produced a handful of remarkable pilots who won fame and high honours. the majority of aircrew, however, were young sergeants, many of whom did not survive to complete a first tour of thirty operations. this book is about one captain, flight-Lietenant Jack wetherly, dfC. it traces his development from novice second pilot of a wellington in the pioneering days of 1940 to senior captain of a halifax in wingCommander.

this book is a timely reminder that there is a lot more to this Squadron than their exploits on the dams. 70 years on, the collective achievements of the men who made up 617 Squadron are relayed, making for an impressive tribute and a celebration of the various aerial endeavours that characterise the group’s history, borne out of an intense spirit of camaraderie and an exceptional level of professionalism.
many of the 617 Squadron crews who took part in the famous attacks on the mohne, eder and Sorpe dams and also the raids on the dortmundems Canal did not return. this book takes the reader to many of the crash sites that resulted. all these sites can be visited within a week’s tour by car or public transport. the book is illustrated with then-and-now photographs of the sites, the personnel involved and the aircraft originally flown.
first published to acclaim in 1982, this was author alan Cooper’s first publication before he went on to become a prolific writer of aviation history. as we approach the 70th anniversary of the dam Buster raids, this re-print will make a timely addition to the library of any enthusiast wishing to mark the occasion, and any curious readers who wish to expand their knowledge of this key operation in world war ii history.

So rapid have been the advances in the science of aeronautics since the end of the first world war that it requires a considerable feat of imagination to cast one’s mind back over the comparatively short period of seventy years to the days when flight Commander Bartlett of the royal naval air Service was flying some of the world’s first bombers over the western front. Philip Bartlett’s account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot’s life in the dawn of aerial warfare.

the debt owed by 14th army to 656 air oP Squadron in the reconquest of Burma was immeasurable. from 1943 until the end of the war, these three flights of five tiny auster aircraft provided air observation for the whole of the army fighting the Japanese in the jungle below. Several times the author refers to the sheer exhilaration of flying over that beautiful but still unhappy country.
By the beginning of 1941 there was a fully fledged Polish air force operating alongside the raf. with 14 Squadrons it was larger than any other of the air forces from nazioccupied europe. they dropped thousands of bombs and laid hundreds of mines, flying 102,486 sorties and notching up a total of 290, 895 operational flying hours. they achieved this at a cost of 1,973 killed and 1,388 wounded. they won 342 British gallantry awards.

numerous books have been published about the first world war but few have focused on the machinations in the British parliament and the role it played in the decision to go to war. Britain, after all, could not have entered the conflict without clear approval from mPs. one hundred years on, fatal fortnight re-examines the arguments which Parliament heard against British war entry and reflects on how the world might have been had the decision gone a different way.
Sent to france with the royal flying Corps at just seventeen, and later a member of the famous 56 Squadron, Cecil Lewis was an illustrious fighter pilot of the first world war. in this vivid and spirited account the author evocatively sets his love of the skies and flying against his bitter experience of the horrors of war as we follow his progress from france and the battlefields of the Somme, to his pioneering defence of London against deadly night time raids.

this book provides a detailed overview of the battles that make up the Cotentin Peninsula Campaign, an important part of the invasion of normandy. in this work Bradham takes a different approach, focusing on the unique set of battles that had to be fought in order for the allies to secure their foothold on normandy.
it is June 1944. the allied armies are poised for the full-scale invasion of fortress europe. across the Channel, the vaunted wehrmacht lies waiting for the signs of invasion, ready for the final battle.what happens next is well-known to any student of modern history. the outcome could easily have been very different, as Peter tsouras shows in this masterful and devastating account in which plans, missions and landings go horribly wrong.
in 1940 Britain faced its biggest threat since the Spanish armada. hitler’s invasion plans were in full swing and Britain had to quickly assemble a secret resistance force. this compelling study reveals the intentions of both side, from hitler’s strategies for operation Sea Lion and subsequent occupation, to Britain’s secret plans for resistance. in telling this story Lampe relates one of world war ii’s best kept secrets and offers insight into what would have been a brutal future.

1812: napoleon in moscow, Paul Britten austin’s atmospheric second volume in his acclaimed trilogy on napoleon’s catastrophic invasion of russia. drawing on eyewitness accounts this study recreates this disastrous military campaign in all its death and glory.
this volume follows the army’s withdrawal through 800 miles of devastated countryside, crossing the horrific relics of the Borodino battlefield, fighting its way through the russian general kutusov’s successive attempts to cut it off, and winning, against overwhelming odds, the three-day battle of the Berezina crossing.
the fruit of more than twenty years of research, this superbly crafted work skilfully blends the memoirs and diaries of more than a hundred eyewitnesses, all of whom took part in the grand army’s doomed march to moscow, to reveal the inside story of this landmark military campaign. the result is a uniquely authentic account in which the reader sees and experiences the campaign through the eyes of participants at each stage of the advance in enthralling day-byday, sometimes hour-by-hour detail.
Jac weller gives a complete account of wellington’s career in india, the battles and sieges he undertook and the lessons he learned that prepared him for the campaigns he would later undertake against the best european armies.

heinz Linge worked with adolf hitler for a ten-year period from 1935 until the führer’s death in the Berlin bunker in may 1945. during his years of service Linge was constantly by his side. Linge gives an excellent eyewitness account of events.
as official ‘court’ photographer, heinrich hoffmann played a critical role in the painstaking cultivation of hitler’s public image and the glorification of the third reich. his memoirs are a crucial eyewitness source for the historian and general reader alike, offering an illuminating glimpse of the dictator’s personality.
top military historian James Lucas examines the stories of fourteen of these men: all of different rank, from varied backgrounds, and highly awarded, they exemplify german military prowess at its most dangerous.
the actions described here cover all theatres of the war, and include battle groups large and small, deployed usually to smash a breach in the enemy line or seal off an enemy penetration. it covers operations in the first dynamic years when wehrmacht forces defeated the armies of one european country after another in fast campaigns, through to the years after Stalingrad and africa as they moved towards defeat.
this gripping book tells the remarkable story of germany’s special forces – military, naval and aerial – during the Second world war. Packed with useful detail and incisive analysis, this is one of the fullest and most accessible accounts of germany’s special forces and their efforts to stave off impending military defeat.

Colonel Mike Snook
Major F M Crum
in this illuminating new history, edward Spiers, presents a selection of first-hand accounts of this epic siege. the 260 letters were published originally in British metropolitan and provincial newspapers and they provide crucial insights into the perceptions of civilians caught up in the siege; the desperate and bloody attempts to relieve the town; and the experiences of junior officers and other ranks as they struggled to cope with the demands of modern warfare.
edward Spiers, a leading authority on the victorian British army, presents here a select edition of letters from the siege of Ladysmith (1899–1900) that have not been seen since their original publication in metropolitan and provincial newspapers. the 250 letters were published in different British newspapers and provide crucial insights into contemporary perceptions of the battles that preceded the siege, the onset of the siege itself, and the desperate and bloody attempts to relieve the town.
how Can man die Better is a unique analysis ofisandlwana – of the weapons, tactics, ground, andthe intriguing characters who made the keymilitary decisions. Because the fatal loss was sohigh on the British side there is still much that isunknown about the battle. the author reconstructs the final phaseof the battle in a way that has never beenattempted before.
this book is not only a fascinating account of a military career in the early years of the twentieth century, but also an insight into the mind and character of an officer of the period. the creation of the Boy Scouts was closely bound up with issues of national character and military preparedness before ww1, and this book clearly demonstrates that link.

SurvivorS of StaLingrad
two frontS, one war
Reinhold Busch
Charles W. Sasser
the book includes first-hand accounts of soldiers who were wounded or fell ill and were flown out of the encirclement; as well as those who fought to the bitter end and were taken prisoner by the Soviets. they reflect on the severity of the fighting, and reveal the slowly ebbing hopes for survival. together they provide an illuminating and tragic portrait of the appalling events at Stalingrad.
war is the story of individuals painted into a broader tapestry of overpowering events. while examining the wider historical perspective to lay the foundation, this book relates the individual stories of the Second world war – of allied bomber pilots shot down over germany, of incredible feats of heroism and self-sacrifice, even of great wartime romances.
ChurChiLL’S underground army John Warwicker British Secret intelligence Service officers and others in the war office were never convinced that appeasement would prevent a nazi invasion. defying high-level opposition, they quietly worked instead on preemptive ‘Last ditch’ survival plans. these included a secret resistance network known as the ghq auxiliary units. it was the only one in europe prepared in advance of an enemy assault.
rommeL’S SPy John Eppler the book details german links with arab nationalists during the war: indeed, one of eppler’s contacts in Cairo was a young officer called anwar el-Sadat, later President of egypt. Before operation ‘Condor’. eppler had been the interpreter when the grand mufti of Jerusalem met hitler in Berlin, and the book gives a full description of this controversial encounter.

John Wilks, Eileen Wilks
written well over 90 years ago while the experiences of youth were still fresh in the author’s mind, this is the story of a seventeen-year-old boy from the time he joined kitchener’s army, as one of the first hundred thousand in 1914, until he found himself in hospital – an officer with the military Cross – recovering from his last wound, on the day of the armistice, 11 november, 1918. in no way a formal record of the great and terrible events it describes, this is a purely personal, almost private, account.
rommel was to become the most respected of all generals in world war two but no-one outside of a small clique in the german army had heard of him in 1917. his role at the Battle of Caporetto in 1917 where the italian army was humiliated at a catastrophic defeat has received little attention yet it was the springboard for his future success. this makes for a fascinating and important story.

Edited by Christopher Arnander Lord Crawford’s pre- and post- war diaries the Crawford Papers (edited by Prof vincent) describe his peacetime experiences and this book fills in a needy gap. his self- control must have been incredible as he found himself under the direction of far less intelligent and knowledgeable men holding more senior rank. this is a unique document which throws fascinating new light on what it meant to be a junior rank.

fighting in a somewhat forgotten corner of empire during the Second world war, the British and indian armoured regiments called upon to harness the power of tank warfare to extreme new levels did so in an effort to outwit an army until that point considered invincible – the imperial Japanese army. their collective efforts were heroic and massively effective, giving the Japanese a taste of mechanised warfare from which they never recovered. above all, this book shows to what extent the tank can prove a decisive weapon in the unlikeliest areas.

James Dorrian
Patrick Dalzel-Job
Brian Lett
A J Chapman
James dorrian has chosen to see this extraordinary exploit not through the eyes of the brass hats and the politicians but through those of the men who took part in it, particularly those whose fate it was to carry out the orders rather than give them. this lends his narrative an immediacy that bare recitation of the facts could not convey and it is no exaggeration to say that the action comes almost painfully to life in his hands.
very few men have a more exciting and dramatic story of their wartime activities to tell than Patrick dalzelJob. in 1940 using his special knowledge of north norway’s coast line he landed and moved over 10,000 allied soldiers in local boats without the loss of a single life. his many adventures included spying on enemy shipping and operating behind the lines in france and germany with ian fleming’s special force unit ‘30au’.
the Small Scale raiding force (SSrf) was formed in february 1942 by gus march Phillips with major general gubbins Soe european chief’s approval. this superbly researched book lifts the veil on a little known but highly effective special force unit and the gallant individuals who served in it.
daily life on these small ships is vividly described. the flotilla had a busy time showing the flag in the Levant and on combined operations in the aegean with the greek Sacred regiment of Commandos. the culmination of their efforts was when tony’s boat, mL838, took the surrender of the island of kos in 1945. written from the perspective of one of the “other ranks”, war of the motor gun Boats fills an important gap in the literature of the Second world war.

Philip newman, a British army surgeon left behind after the evacuation from dunkirk, spent his time as a prisoner of war in france, then germany, treating the wounded and sick – and planning to escape. after several failed attempts he got out over the wire and journeyed for weeks as a fugitive. his straightforward, honest and vivid memoir of his work as a surgeon at dunkirk, life in the prison camps and his escape attempts gives a fascinating insight into his wartime experience.
from the moment he was shot down to the final whistle, Jimmy James’ one aim as a Pow of the germans was to escape.the great escaper describes his experiences and those of his fellow prisoners in the most gripping and thrilling manner. the author made more than 12 escape attempts including his participation in the great escape, where 50 of the 76 escapees were executed in cold blood on hitler’s orders.moonless night has strong claim to be the finest escape story of the Second world war.
two officers made home runs via a tunnel dug in the open air beneath a wooden vaulting horse from Stalag Luft iii. the author, a royal air force bomber captain, was shot down over germany in 1942 and imprisoned in Stalag-Luft iii (site of the ‘great escape’ later in the war). he escaped after 10 months and, accompanied by a fellow raf officer, made his way back to england. this classic escapeand-evasion story, an exciting read and is arguably the most ingenious Pow escape of wwii.
reinhold eggers was the german Security officer during the last years at Colditz. his book is a compilation of the most spectacular escape attempts written by the escapers themselves. eggers supports the stories with extracts from his Colditz diary which ran to 26 copybooks, with stories about the german staff and their characters, and a short account of the end of his war when he became a prisoner himself.

on 22 august 1485 the forces of the yorkist king richard iii and his Lancastrian opponent henry tudor clashed at Bosworth field in Leicestershire in one of the decisive battles of english history. richard was defeated and killed. henry took the crown as henry vii, established the tudor dynasty and set english history on a new course. this lucid, authoritative and readable new history will be essential reading for anyone who is intrigued by the short, unhappy reign of richard iii and the trial of strength that destroyed him.

the great Boer war Lord CheLmSford and the zuLu war Byron Farwell the great Boer war was one of the last romantic wars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer people fighting to establish the independence of their tiny nation against the British empire at its peak of power and selfconfidence. it was fought in the barren vastness of the South african veldt, and it produced in almost equal measure extraordinary feats of personal heroism, unbelievable examples of folly and stupidity, and many incidents of humour and tragedy.
The Hon. this is a largely unknown story of a small number of British officers who led muslim soldiers in a hard-fought anti-insurgency war which has shaped today’s gulf. after outlining the historical, geographical and political background, the book describes military action in a stark and mountainous environment, including operations with irregular forces and the SaS as well as action in the air and at sea.
on the point of being demobbed from the SaS, fred marafono was recruited by david Stirling for his private security company. after Stirling’s death, fred found himself in the midst of Sierra Leone’s Blood diamond wars, and formed an unbreakable bonding with the country’s champion of democracy, Chief hinga norman, whose leadership and tragic death are integral to the story. Peter Penfold sums it all up in the book’s foreword, writing of the, ‘confidence, trust and admiration i have for this remarkable man.’
in early 1997 Peter Penfold, arrived in Sierra Leone as the British high Commissioner. this fascinating book describes not just his eventful three year tour but the background and subsequent events that placed this small country at the centre of the world stage. he gives a highly informed account of the subsequent events including the SaS operation BarraS – the rescue of the British military hostages. this is a very important account based on the most privileged knowledge.

‘Save yourselves, i’ll carry on’. these were the last known words of herbert Columbine, shouted at his two companions on the afternoon of 22nd march 1918. at 9am that morning 9 Squadron machine gun Corps had come under intense attack from a heavy force of german infantry. after several hours it became clear their position would soon be overrun so herbert told them to escape while they could. he was only defeated after the germans bought up air support and dropped a bomb on his position.

this book examines the role of the doctor in war, with reference to the western front 1914-1918. it examines the system that was developed for recruiting medical officers, highlighting the tensions between civil and military needs, and the Bma’s determination to protect the interests of the profession. Separate chapters deal with the position of medical students and the contribution of women doctors.
eugene (micky) ryan was born in ireland and studied medicine at Cork and edinburgh. after a period of private practice in London he was commissioned into the ramC in 1901 and saw active service in South africa. after meeting douglas haig in 1912 the two men’s lives became intertwined and their relationship, while primarily professional, blossomed into a friendship of mutual respect.

tom hicks’ story begins when he joins the LmS straight from school and follows his early life on the railways in the 1930s, through enlistment, training as a paratrooper, wartime service, imprisonment and his return to the LmS as an engine driver. with insightful commentary from tom’s son norman, this is the story of an ordinary soldier, who was motivated by pride in his unit. tom has recounted his experiences with a keen eye and the sense of humour that has always enabled him to triumph in the face of adversity.
the fierce struggle between the British 1st airborne division and the superior german forces in and around arnhem is well documented. this book tells of the role played in the battle for oosterbeek and the bridge at arnhem itself by the men of the glider Pilot regiment (gPr). these men were already experienced soldiers who volunteered to join the airborne forces and take the fight to the germans in a totally new regiment.
no one who has read of arnhem can have failed to have been inspired by gallantry of the 2nd Parachute regiment, which held the north end of the key road bridge over the rhine not for 24 hours for which it was equipped, but for 3 days and 4 nights. Commanded by Lt-Col frost, they beat off repeated armoured and infantry assaults by far greater numbers, until forced out of the ruined and burning positions by losses, lack of ammunition, and the failure of the whole arnhem operation.

of the tens of thousands of allied personnel captured by the victorious Japanese during late 1941 and early 1942 only a small number of brave souls attempted to escape to freedom rather than suffer brutality, starvation and very possibly death as Pows. this is an inspiring and uplifting book that demonstrates the best and worst of human spirit.
Baynes’ courage and mental and physical strength kept him alive during the 1000 days of captivity by the barbarous Japanese army. the difficulties and risks involved in keeping a diary were immense and yet Len persevered. as a result of this extraordinary feat, Len’s record is pure fact. to read his account of life and death first during the fruitless fighting and then captivity in numerous camps in Singapore and thailand is a humbling and moving experience.

when John mcewan and his regiment landed in malaya, they were all hugely confident. this evaporated in utter disbelief as the British were totally out-manoeuvered by the Japanese advance culminating, in the capture of Singapore. this is his extraordinary story, told with humility and pride, which he dedicates both to those who slaved, suffered and died in brutal conditions of the kinkasaki copper mine. an unforgettable book that must be read.
Captivity, Slavery and Survival as a far east Pow is the incredibly moving story of gus anckorn, a British soldier who was captured by the Japanese and held for over three and a half years. Before the war, gus was a magician and throughout the war, entertained both fellow soldiers and Japanese guards with his tricks. this is an incredibly moving book and will surely be considered as one of the classic far east Pow stories.

teenage tommy is a detailed account of a trooper’s life at the front, vividly recalling, for example, the privations suffered during the retreat from mons. and later, the desperate fighting to hold back the german onslaught at 2nd ypres. But this is more then just a memoir about trench warfare. Ben’s lively sense of humour and healthy disrespect for petty restrictions make this an entertaining as well as a moving story of life at the front.
the date: 14 october 1918 – a misty early morning, east of Ledegem, Belgium. young British army the author has gone behind the accepted facts to tell for the first time the true story of this gallant deserter. the book offers an insight into the way in which people of german origin were treated in australia and Britain during the first world war.
the book will contain a brief history of international rugby up to and including the first world war and there will be biographies of each player along with their individual and team photographs. details of the manner of their death, their burial place and any memorials will also be included, alongside their international playing record.
my Boy Jack? is the first biography of John kipling, woven around the extraordinary story of kipling’s search for his son. the authors, tonie and valmai holt, intrigued by this unusual and newsworthy action felt drawn into taking the investigation further. the result of their research, much of it from previously unpublished sources, found John to be likeable, humorous, extraordinarily unspoilt by his father’s fame and a remarkably good and, in his final hours, brave young officer.

in the pre-dawn darkness of 6 June 1944, the greatest armada the world has ever seen began to disembark an allied invasion force on the beaches of france’s normandy peninsula. invasion ‘44 tells the story of that assault from the day over four years earlier, and only a few short weeks after the British disaster at dunkirk, when a few individuals in the high Command began to turn their thoughts to the possibilities of an eventual return to the mainland, and the story continues up to the time when the allied beach-head was firmly established on french soil.
Preceded by a massive airborne assault, the largest amphibious operation ever undertaken began on 6 June 1944 – d-day. over a fifty-mile stretch of heavily-fortified french coastline 160,000 allied troops came ashore on the beaches of normandy. Supported by more than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft, they quickly gained a foothold in fortress europe. Packed with the first-hand accounts of those who lived or trained at Slapton Sands, the author, a military historian brought up in the area, investigates all aspects of the military exercises undertaken here.
gary Sterne has made a painstaking study of what the allies actually knew in advance of d-day and about the maisy Battery. maps, orders and assualt plans have been found in the uk, german and uS archives, many of which were not released from the top Secrecy act for 60+ years. all these combine to make this one of the most up-to-date references on the subject.

Edited by Michael Glover
in 1914 there were only two machine guns supporting a British infantry battalion of 800 men, and in the light of the effectiveness of german and french machine guns the machine gun Corps was formed in october 1915. this remarkable book, compiled and edited by C e Crutchley, is a collection of the personal accounts of officers and men who served in the front lines with their machine guns in one of the most ghastly wars, spread over three continents.
the diaries of front-line soldiers of the great war are relatively commonplace; contemporary drawings and paintings, other than those by the official war artists, are less so. what is extraordinary, even unique, about the fateful Battle Line is that it combines a journal of infantry service on the western front with sketches and finished work made at the time, often illustrating places, people and incident from the text.

Long before the first world war had dragged to its blood-soaked conclusion the belief that most of the senior officers had spent their time in comfort and safety in chateaux far behind the lines with no idea of the conditions in which the men they commanded were fighting was firmly embedded in the public mind. as the years pass by that belief has, if anything, become more deeply held. it is the purpose of this book to show not only how the myth was born and grew but how totally at odds it is with the facts.

By 1918, after three years of war, europe was weary of the stalemate and the terrible slaughter on the western front. the russian front had collapsed but the united States had abandoned her neutral stance and joined the allies. So the stage was set for what would be the last year of the great war. acclaimed military historian Barrie Pitt describes the savage battles that raged unceasingly along the western front, and analyses the policies of the warring powers and studies the men who led them.
expertly written and beautifully presented, this book of outstanding photographs, documents and art work captures the spirit of the British people as they faced and successfully came through the prolonged challenge of the first world war. with almost four hundred illustrations, the book spans the British isles and the most remote fighting fronts.

once a hussar is a vivid account of the wartime experiences of ray ellis, a gunner who in later life recorded in this well-written, candid and perceptive memoir the conflict he knew as a young man seventy years ago. his story is an honest and moving memoir of the horror of warfare, but it also reveals the surprising triumphs of the human spirit in times of great hardship. ellis’s self-deprecating humour skilfully counters the harsh realities related in a personal recollection of a war that claimed so many young lives.

what was it like to serve as an artillery officer during the Second world war? how did he view the battlefield and experience combat? and how did his work with the guns combine with that of the other arms – the infantry, the tanks? Peter Pettit’s diary, covering his entire wartime career in the royal artillery, edited and with an extensive introduction by John Philip Jones, offers a rare insight into the day-to-day existence of a gunner at war, and it is a valuable record of the role played by the royal artillery during the conflict.

the men of Britain’s merchant navy, although unarmed civilians going about their lawful business were the first to be involved with the enemy in the Second world war. Less than nine hours after the declaration of war on 3 September 1939, the donaldson liner athenia was sunk without warning by a german uboat off the west coast of ireland. from that moment onwards, British merchant seamen were constantly in the front-line in all quarters of the globe.

in february 1813 the British frigate Phoebe set out on a secret mission that would involve sailing halfway around the world to attack american settlements in the Pacific northwest. from the american perspective the war of 1812 began with disasters in its invasion of Canada, but against all expectations the infant uS navy had scored significant victories at sea.
this incident-packed career is recounted with restraint, plenty of humour and colourful descriptive power – his account of broaching and almost capsizing in an arctic winter storm is as good as anything in the literature of the sea. the result makes enthralling reading, and as the surviving veterans rapidly decline in numbers, this may turn out to be one of the last great eyewitness narratives of the naval war.

this is the narrative of a harpooner in the whale-ship Charles w morgan, whose four-year voyage in 18491853 took him from new Bedford, massachusetts, to the South Pacific and on around the world. whaling was, in effect, the first oil industry, a high-risk business where huge fortunes were to be made. haley’s is the authentic voice of those that chose its dangers.
reflecting the sailor’s traditional dislike of women on board these ships were derisively dubbed ‘hen frigates’ and although they have been the fashionable subject of academic interest in recent years, there is not much literature by the women themselves. among the first, and most accomplished, is abby Jane morrell’s account of a voyage between 1829 and 1831 that took her from new england to the South Pacific.
captain samuel samuels this is the autobiography of an american who ran away to sea at the age of 11 and charts his rise from the lowliest seaman (berthed under the forecastle) to the command of his own ship and the occupation of the luxurious after cabin.
a bookish lad who had been apprenticed to a printer, Charles nordhoff was better educated than most of his fellow seamen, and was well equipped to describe what became a three-year roundthe-world adventure. apart from its descriptions of exotic climes, much of the interest in the book lies in a boy’s view of naval life and how the ship was run.

this book, produced with the full cooperation of the hmS ramillies association, is a tribute to the ship in words and photographs, deftly assembled from a combination of interviews with surviving crew members, and carefully researched diaries and written accounts by those connected with the ship, including hrh the duke of edinburgh for whom ramillies was his first ship.
this timely release offers a comprehensive and engaging account of the life and times of this great naval admiral. ever since C.S. forester’s fictional hero horatio hornblower began to delight and enthrall readers, there has been speculation as to whether his adventures were based on the career of a real naval officer. it became apparent that he was aware of gordon when the first of his books were written, and that when he decided to expand the series he chose gordon’s career as the framework on which his hero’s life would be based.

Captain Laurence greene was gassed at ypres. he takes ten years to die. with her fiancé, Joseph, lost in france, effie Shaw spends a decade as Laurence’s cook. they share a roof, a sweet tooth and a taste for pastoral romances. Propriety, however, prescribes that their sharing end there. it is a surprise to effie, then, when Laurence bequeaths her a railway ticket, the deeds to a tea shop and a declaration of his unspoken love.
Set against the backdrop of the great war and infused with a sense of intrigue and high drama, this is a novel of unsettling force. with a keen eye for detail, oldman evokes the brutality of mud splattered battlefields and aerial combat, bringing the reader right up close to the action. as events spiral and the war continues to impact upon the investigation, peril and suspense combine to create a real sense of unease and urgency, leading towards an unexpected and fascinating conclusion.
george Bridge has a secret, a wrong he did a lifetime ago that he must confess. Back in the summer and autumn of 1918 he lived life at a pitch he never experienced again; any moment could have been his last. he was a pilot in the raf. that quiet earth is rich in the kind of ‘boys own’ descriptions of combat, but underlying the novel is an astute study of madness; the insanity of the war itself and the personal decline of tormented young Billy Love.

this enthralling piece of work by first-time novelist robert Southworth explores the avenue history could have run down if Spartacus had survived the slave rebellion in 73BC, an uprising whose aftermath didn’t deliver the remains of the famous slave leader.

david kent-Lemon presents us here with a fast paced and dynamic narrative, exploring a fascinating, dramatic and less well known corner of that extraordinary conflict – the american Civil war. the characters are finely drawn, with the balance between deceit and morality offset by courage and humour. the realism and historical accuracy of the background complete the picture.
this fast paced true story portrays an authentic evocation of nineteenth century Poole on the brink of great change. with the royal national Lifeboat Service being such a characteristic feature of sea-life around the shores of the united kingdom, this portrayal of its origin looks set to appeal widely.
in Lincoln’s assassin, Jeffrey Pennington presents Booth’s own story of flight and return, detailing how another was shot in his place as he escaped to nominal freedom and obscurity, leaving behind all his personal belongings and the stagelife he once knew. the larger conspiracy in which he was embroiled is unpicked in stylish fashion, exploring the political landscape in which Lincoln lived and died.

‘the music hall ...had no place for reticence; it was downright, it shouted, it made noise, it enjoyed itself and made the people enjoy themselves as well.’ W.J. MACQUEEN POPE including stories of a clergyman who wrote music-hall sketches, a hall in glasgow where luckless entertainers were pulled off stage by a long hooked pole, and Cockney dictionaries that helped americans understand touring British performers, this book is a hugely engaging slice of social history, rich in humour, tragedy and bathos.
a must-buy book for everyone interested in history and the scandalous behaviour of politicians across the world. andy hughes’ fascinating book guides us through centuries of political abuse – and just plain stupidity. there is definitely no shortage of scandalous behaviour. you name it and politicians have been mixed up in it somehow.

CharLeS darwin
from PoLe to PoLe
Andrew Norman
Garth James Cameron
Charles darwin did not deliberately set out to be the ‘destroyer of mythical beliefs’, some of which, in his early days as a young Christian, he had previously espoused. he was a modest man who liked to avoid controversy, yet he was to be the cause of one of the greatest controversies in the history of science and religion. how did this thoughtful, methodical scientist come to have such an impact on his time – and on ours? that is the question that andrew norman seeks to answer in this lucid and concise biography of the author of the origin of Species.
roald amundsen (1872-1928) was the most successful polar explorer of his era using sledges, dogs, ski and ships. he is mainly remembered for being the first man to reach the South Pole on 14 december 1911. his involvement in aviation from his experiments with man-lifting kites in 1909 to his death in 1928 while flying from norway to Spitsbergen has not been the subject of a detailed study until now.

SCott of the antarCtiC
Richard Sale and George Rodway
Sue Blackhall reassesses Scott’s life and the causes of the disaster that ended his and his comrades’ lives, and the extent of Scott’s personal culpability. from a previously unassailable position, Scott has became a figure of controversy, however, more recent research has on the whole regarded Scott more positively, emphasising his personal bravery and stoicism while acknowledging his errors, but ascribing his expedition’s fate primarily to misfortune.
in this fascinating study of the dramatic history of everest climbs, richard Sale and george rodway describe in vivid detail the struggle to conquer the mountain and the advances in scientific knowledge that made the conquest possible. their account gives a compelling insight into the science of mountaineering as well as the physical and psychological challenges faced by individuals who choose to test themselves in some of the harshest conditions on earth.

Surgeon at armS

Skorzeny
Lipmann Kessel
Charles McCormack
Michael Lowry, Foreword by Professor Richard Holmes in 1939 the author was posted to the queen’s royal regiment on the north west frontier chasing Pathan tribesmen for two years. his Battalion was cut off by the Japs for three weeks and was later in the thick of the action at kohima. all this is vividly described in this inspiring memoir.
Surgeon at arms is without doubt one of the most interesting and dramatic personal memoirs to come out of the Second world war. the authors professional skill was at once tested to the limit and the modest detachment with which he describes serious operations performed under appalling conditions would alone be enough to merit the reissue of the book.
weakened by hunger, thirst and ill-treatment, author Charles mcCormac, then a ww2 prisoner-of-war in Japanese-occupied Singapore, knew that if he did not escape he would die. with sixteen others he broke out and began an epic twothousand-mile escape from the island of Singapore, through the jungles of indonesia to australia.
Skorzeny was one of the most daring figures of the 20th Century. his exploits included the rescue of mussolini from his mountain prison, a brief affair with eva Peron, a blackmail attempt on winston Churchill and the kidnapping of the son of the wartime dictator of hungary. eisenhower declared him “the most wanted man in europe”. Charles whiting, who actually met Skorzeny, pieces together this truly remarkable story.

roy Close’s wartime experiences make breathtaking reading. mobilised in 1939 he was fortunate to avoid death or captivity during the german blitzkrieg and escape through dunkirk. in 1944 he operated behind enemy lines with the maquis in france, who were in open insurrection against the german occupiers.
while always dangerous and daring SaS operations are by no means invariably successful and when they go wrong, they do so very badly. this book adds valuable new information on SaS operations in ww2.
this is an action-packed account of a young irish SaS original including the early exploits of the SaS have enduring appeal. o’dowd mm served with and was respected by other originals such as Stirling, Paddy mayne, gentleman Jim almond, Lewis and Jellicoe.
early in the Second world war, Peter wand-tetley volunteered for ‘special service’. he saw action first with the newly formed Commandos raiding the north african coast and then in the fierce fighting on Crete. as well as describing his exemplary war record, Special forces Commander covers wand-tetley’s early life and his career post war.
this remarkable story of Jim almonds (gentleman Jim) is set in wartime england, the western desert, italy and france and recounts his formative role in the birth of the SaS. against a dramatic background of love, courage and high-risk adventure, it captures for the first time the real spirit of the young soldiers in the newly emerging Special air Service.

the author, a young conscript, fought with the glorious glosters at the legendary imjin river battle. heavily outnumbered by the Chinese and subjected to ‘human wave’ infantry attacks, he and his colleagues suffered the trauma of being over-run. this fighting soldier’s memoir brings home some most unpalatable truths.
