EDITOR SPOTLIGHT – MARTIN MACE, FRONTLINE BOOKS
a
side from the continuing centenaries of the First world war, 2015 also marks a number of other important anniversaries. as Frontline Books produces the finest military history publications across all eras and subjects, from ancient Greece and rome to the two world wars and the conflicts of the twenty-first century, the next few months will see a variety of exciting new releases. this year marks the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign, aspects of which are the subject of a meticulously researched and beautifully written trilogy by the awardwinning journalist and best-selling author John Hamilton. Gallipoli Victoria Cross Hero tells the moving story of Hugo throssell who was awarded the VC for his actions during the Battle of Hill 60. deeply affected by the scenes he had witnessed before, during, and after the battle, as well as his injuries, throssell became an outspoken opponent of war. He committed suicide aged forty-nine. In Gallipoli Sniper, John presents a vivid account of the merciless nature of the fighting on Gallipoli by examining the life of Billy Sing. eventually known as the ‘assassin of Gallipoli’, so expert was Sing at his work that he was considered to be the most successful sniper and most feared man on the peninsula. the last book in John’s trilogy, Fatal Charge at Gallipoli, examines one of the bravest, and ultimately most futile, actions of the dardanelles Campaign – the charge of the Light Horse at the nek in august 1915. wave after wave attacked a small stretch of the turkish trenches, but all to no avail, the attack later being described ‘nothing but bloody murder’.

with the bicentenary of the Battle of waterloo in June 2015, Frontline is launching its new napoleonic Library series. this unparalleled collection of classic works on the napoleonic wars, of which there are many more to come in the months and years ahead, will include many of the finest memoirs and studies of the period, including such invaluable works as Siborne’s Waterloo Letters and Colonel Chesney’s Waterloo Lectures. the invasion of the Channel Islands in 1940 is the subject of the first book in another new series by Frontline, ‘Voices of the Past’. By Simon Hamon, Channel Islands Invaded is the story of the muddled evacuation, of homes abandoned, animals and families left behind, of the German bombing of the islands, the fear of those remaining, and of the very first days of German occupation, told by those involved through original eyewitness accounts and contemporary commentary. Staying with the events of 1940, a new edition of Men of the Battle of Britain by kenneth G wynn, which is being published in association with the Battle of Britain Memorial trust, is due to appear on 30 June 2015. the trust acquired all rights to the book in 2010, as a result of an anonymous donation, and since then it has made many additions and amendments, as well as adding new photographs. acknowledged worldwide as the standard work of reference giving career details of the allied airmen who qualified for the “immediate” award of the 1939–1945 Star with Battle of Britain Clasp, Men of the Battle of Britain will undoubtedly be one of the major aviation publishing events of 2015.

‘one of the most valuable sources of information available on the campaign of 1815.’ First Empire
this remarkable account was controversial on its release in 1827 for its unvarnished and unsentimental portrayal of the grim war against the French in Spain, the netherlands, Portugal and France itself. a cynic with a highly developed sense of humour, the author was not afraid to criticise his superiors, be they thieving sergeants or officers who were far from gentlemen. editor Paul Cowan draws on little-known diaries and other accounts written by the author’s contemporaries to corroborate and expand on this frank but all too long neglected first-hand picture of the war in the Peninsula as it was really fought.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the British army’s victories over the French at battles such as Blenheim in 1704, Minden and Quebec in 1759, and over the Jacobites at Culloden in 1746, were largely credited to its infantry’s particularly effective and deadly firepower. For the first time, david Blackmore has gone back to original drill manuals and other contemporary sources to discover the reasons behind this.

napoleon was an artilleryman before he was an emperor. He understood the power and effectiveness of cannon and their ability to pulverise defences, reduce fortresses and destroy attacks. In return, the guns won napoleon battles. this impressive study chronicles the story of the guns and men during the twenty-three years of almost continuous warfare from 1792–1815: from the battlefields of continental europe to the almost primitive terrain of north america and of the seas, lakes and rivers that connected them.
FRONTLINE BOOKS 2015
In the ground-breaking waterloo archive series Gareth Glover has trawled through the archives of europe to unearth a treasure trove of fascinating documents – personal letters to family and friends, private journals and official reports – that have been virtually ignored in many standard histories of the period. In doing so he has provided an invaluable new source which will challenge preconceptions, disprove theories, destroy myths and allow for a complete re-evaluation of many key aspects of the campaign.

rudolf witzig entered the history books as the heroic captor of Belgium’s supposedly impregnable fortress eben emael in May 1940 – the first time that glider-borne troops were used in the war. to many people, he is also known as the commander of the battle group that fired the first shots of the tunisian campaign. remarkably, next to nothing has been written about him as an individual. this biography, completed with the full support of witzig’s widow and son, is a comprehensive history of the man and also provides important new detail on the German parachute arm that he served.
a posting to the eastern Front during world war II was rightly regarded with dread by the German soldiers. they were faced by the unremitting hostility of the climate, the people and even, at times, their own leadership. Few of them were to survive the five nightmarish years of struggle. In this classic account leading military historian James Lucas examines different aspects of the fighting from epic battles such as Stalingrad and kursk to a bicycle mounted anti-tank unit fighting against the oncoming russian hordes. told through the experiences of the German soldiers, war on the eastern Front is a unique record of this cataclysmic campaign.

although separated from the modern reader by a full century, the First world war continues to generate controversy and interest as the great event upon which modern history pivoted. this thought-provoking book explores ten alternate scenarios in which the course of the war is changed forever. How would the war have changed had the Germans not attacked France but turned their main thrust against russia; or had the Greeks joined the allies at Gallipoli? what if the americans intervened in 1915, rather 1917? expertly written by leading military historians, this is a compelling and credible look at what might have been.
the definitive account of new Zealand’s role in the disastrous 1915 Gallipoli campaign, when a Britishled expeditionary force met the turkish army in an attempt to wrest control of the dardanelles, comes alive in an updated edition, liberally illustrated and brilliantly analysed by the doyen of military historians. this new title does justice to the reality of this epic campaign, and deserves a place on the shelves of history enthusiasts worldwide.

For at least two centuries the Spartan army was the most formidable war machine in Greece; the purpose of this book is to show the reasons for this. Professor Lazenby looks first at the composition, training and organization of the army, tracing its roots back to the eighth century BC. the second part analyses some of the main campaigns – thermopylai, Plataea, Sphakteria, Mantineia, the nemea, koroneia, Lechaion and Leuktra. the final part continues the story to the end of Greek independence.
In 53BC the Proconsul Marcus Crassus and 36,000 of his legionaries were crushed by the Parthians at Carrhae in what is now eastern turkey. Crassus’ defeat and death and the 20,000 casualties his army suffered were an extraordinary disaster for rome. the event intensified the bitter, destructive struggle for power in the roman republic and curtailed the empire’s eastward expansion. Gareth Sampson, in this challenging and original study, reconstructs the Carrhae campaign in fine detail, reconsiders the policy of imperial expansion and gives a fascinating insight into the opponents the romans confronted in the east – the Parthians

the epic struggle between Carthage and rome, two of the superpowers of the ancient world, is most famous for land battles in Italy, on the Iberian peninsula and in north africa. But warfare at sea, which played a vital role in the First and Second Punic wars, rarely receives the attention it deserves. and it is the monumental clashes of the Carthaginian and roman fleets in the Mediterranean that are the focus of Christa Steinby’s absorbing study.
the history of the ‘barbarian’ peoples of europe is filled with dramatic wars and migrations. their greatest challenge was their struggle with the might of rome. the romans themselves admired the size and strength of the barbarians, which, combined with a life of hardship and intertribal warfare, made them dangerous opponents. this book narrates these clashes between rome and its tribal foes, from the foundation of rome to the battle of the teutoberg Forest in a fast-paced and accessible style.
the battle of adrianople (ad 378), in which emperorValens lost his life, is regarded as one of the worst defeats ever suffered by roman arms. ammianus Marcellinus, a contemporary, called it the worst massacre since Cannae, nearly 600 years before. Modern historians have accorded it great significance both at a tactical level, due to the success of Gothic cavalry over the vaunted roman infantry, and strategically, often citing it as the beginning of the end for the empire. adrian CoombsHoar untangles the debate that still surrounds the battle with an insightful account that draws on the latest research.

although Marcus Junius Brutus is one of the most famous, or infamous, conspirators of rome and the ancient world, if not of all time, most only know of this historical figure through the literary medium of Shakespeare’s tragedy, Julius Caesar. Furthermore, any interest in Brutus has tended to focus only on events surrounding Caesar’s murder. this biography instead considers Brutus in his historical context, gathering details from ancient evidence and piecing together, as far as possible, his whole life. as the first dedicated biography in over 30 years, this full and balanced reconsideration of this significant roman republican is long overdue.

over the years, some 20,000 books and articles have been written about alexander the Great, most hailing him as possibly the greatest general ever. However, richard Gabriel’s radical reappraisal concludes that the evidence does not support such claims. the author presents alexander as a misfit within his own warrior society, attempting to overcompensate. a thoroughly unstable character, he committed brutal atrocities that would today have him vilified as a monstrous psychopath.
the second volume in John d Grainger’s history of the Seleukid empire is devoted to the reign of antiochus III. often remembered only for losing the battle of Magnesia, antiochus is here revealed as one of the most powerful rulers of the age. Having emerged victorious from civil war in 223, his campaigns gradually reunified and then extended the empire. then came intervention in Greece and the clash with rome, leading to the defeat at Magnesia. despite this, antiochus remained ambitious to the end. when he died in 187 BC the empire was still one of the world’s most powerful states.

For much of this time, the Squadron was based in Germany at the front line of the Cold war, but it also participated in the Gulf war in 1991, in operations over Iraq from 1991–2009, in the kosovo conflict in 2000 and latterly during the war in afghanistan, firstly with the tornado Gr4 and then with the Shadow r1. today the Squadron operates in great secrecy in an Intelligence, Surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance role.

In 1945 it was announced that allied airmen who had taken part in the Battle of Britain in 1940 would be entitled to the “immediate” award of the 1939–1945 Star, with Battle of Britain Clasp. In 1958 the Battle of Britain Fighter association (BBFa) was formed, with full membership only available to holders of the award. Geoff Simpson has now been invited by the association to use these archives as the basis of a book on the history of the organisation.
during the Second world war, 156 raF men successfully escaped from German Pow camps in western europe. a further 1,975 men evaded capture after having been shot down over this same territory. Martin Bowman has drawn together tales of just a handful of these men, illustrating the bravery and resourcefulness that characterised their experiences. By bringing these stories together, Bowman is able to capture an authentic sense of the times at hand and the reality of life as an escaper/ evader during this tumultuous and incredibly dangerous time.
Martin Bowman has drawn together a selection of first-hand pilot testimonies in an effort to record authentically the experience of flying the much-mythologised wellington during one of the most challenging eras of aviation history. the book is supplemented by two plate sections of stirring b&w images.
on the night of February 23/24 1945, a force of Lancaster bombers targeted 1,825 tonnes of bombs on the central area of the German city of Pforzheim. In just 22 minutes, 17,600 people were killed and 83 per cent of the city was destroyed. this is the story of that raid, set within the wider context of the war. the final months of Bomber Command activity are explored fully and the morality, efficacy, and sheer destructive force of their offensive strategy is surveyed in detail.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT – NORMAN FRIEDMAN
d
r norman Friedman is america’s leading naval analyst and warship historian. a physicist by training, but an historian by inclination, he brings a unique combination of technical knowledge and deeply researched context to any subject he studies. His early work at the prestigious think-tank the Hudson Institute during the Cold war era gave him experience of divining the wider significance to Soviet naval policy of their warship designs – why they were built and equipped in the way they were, and what that revealed about the strategy and tactics they were intended to pursue. this search for the driving forces behind warship design became the corner stone of his approach to historical subjects, seen from the beginning in his ground-breaking first book Battleship design and development published in 1978. over thirty books later, his work is widely appreciated for its unique ability to make connections between technical, economic and political issues that explain why warships turn out the way they do, rather than simply describing their characteristics. His reputation for novel insights into even well-studied topics makes every new Friedman book an eagerly anticipated event for enthusiasts and naval historians – and few have generated so-much pre-publication comment as his latest, the British Battleship, which promises something new on one of the most popular subjects in the field.

the outcome of much of the maritime warfare in the Second World War was decided by the torpedo or the aerial bomb, making relatively recent warship types, the submarine and aircraft carrier, the new arbiters naval conflict. Yet despite this, there was a surprising number of traditional ship-to-ship engagements involving the big guns of battleships and cruisers. this book recounts some of the most important, technically interesting, or obscure of these gunfire duels in a narrative that combines pacy storytelling with an in-depth understanding of the factors influencing victory or defeat.

the attack on the British frigate amethyst on the Yangtze river by Chinese Communists in 1949 made world headlines. there was even more publicity when the ship made a dramatic escape after being trapped for 101 days. the ‘Yangtze incident’ was even made into a feature film, which depicted the ship and her crew as innocent victims of Communist aggression. the truth was more complex, and so sensitive that the government intended that some of the files should be closed until 2030. however, these have now been released and in making use of these documents this book is the first to tell the full story.

employing superb, clear draughtsmanship this book illustrates each and every detail of the rigging of typical period foreand-aft vessels.the rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex task that any modeller has to accomplish; the intricacies can be daunting and visual references limited. the author’s first book, rigging Period Ship Models, was a triumph of clarity for those needing to decipher the complexities of square rig.
the rigging of period ship models is the most complex task which any modeller has to take on, for an eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile on mile of rigging, more than 1,000 blocks, and acres of canvas. to reduce this in scale, and yet retain an accurate representation, is an awesome undertaking. this now classic work untangles the complex web, and, using some 400 drawings, the author shows clearly how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards and sails.
the practice of piracy taught english seamen how to fight and, when the nation was at its greatest peril, in 1588, it was pirates who kept the armada away from the coast. effingham, Grenville, ralegh and drake, became ‘admirals all for england’s sake’, but this highly original book argues that their deeply ingrained piratical approach to naval warfare almost allowed the armada to succeed. this is only one of a number of startling insights into the reality of elizabethan naval policy offered by this honest and eminently readable reappraisal.
the emergence of a sea-power brought with it revolutionary ship designs and new weapon-fits, all with the object of making english warships feared on the seas in which they sailed. along with this came the absorption of new navigational skills and a breed of sailor who fought for his living. Indeed, the english were able to harness the avarice of the merchant and the ferocity of the pirate to the needs of the state to create seamen who feared God and little else. Men schooled as corsairs rose to command the state’s navy and their background and self-belief defeated all who came against them.

this new book tells the story of the creation, purpose, operations and career of the Marinekorps Flandern. the Flanders harbours should have allowed the German navy to strike dangerous blows at vital British traffic in the Channel and southern north Sea but the Marine korps was unable to fulfill the great expectations of von tirpitz. the author not only explains how the German conducted operations, but also explains how the opportunites presented by the Flemish occupation were wasted away. a significant and insightful book on an important theatre of the war.
with more than 125 beautifully designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great sea battles as well as the smaller operations, convoys, skirmishes and sinkings. no other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the naval war in this period and it will become the definitive reference work for enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended across all the world’s oceans and had such a significant impact on the outcome of the war.

the Lusitania Story is the complete story of this most famous ocean liner, told for the first time in a single volume. the Lusitania is today most remembered for controversy surrounding her loss by a German submarine attack in 1915, during the First world war. It tells of the ground-breaking advances in maritime engineering that she represented, as well as a hitherto unheard of degree of opulence.

Leonard Sellers the Hood Battalion saw some of the fiercest fighting of the First world war, particularly at antwerp, in the Gallipoli Campaign and then again on the western Front at the ancre, at Gavrelle, and at Passchendaele. Len Sellers, whose interest in the Hood Battalion was first aroused when he discovered that his great-uncle had served with them, lets the participants tell their own story, having expended prodigious labour in unearthing the many first-hand accounts of the Hood’s exploits included in this book. It is indeed a tale told by heroes.

this is a reappraisal of Sir Ian Hamilton VCs controversial command of the Gallipoli campaign. the Gallipoli Campaign is generally viewed as a disastrous failure of the First world war, inadequately redeemed by the heroism of the soldiers and sailors who were involved in the fighting. a balanced evaluation of the Gallipoli gamble, and of the political and military leadership, are the challenging tasks which Peter Liddle sets himself in his new study of the campaign and the experience of the men who served in it.

as a soldier and general, statesman and empire-builder, Genghis khan is an almost legendary figure. as Chris Peers shows, in this concise and authoritative study, he possessed exceptional gifts as a leader and manager of men – he ranks among the greatest military commanders – but he can only be properly understood in terms of the Mongol society and traditions he was born into. He looks in detail at the military skills, tactics and ethos of the Mongol soldiers, and at the advantages and disadvantages they had in combat with the soldiers of more settled societies.

READ ABOUT YOUR TOWN DURING THE GREAT WAR townS and CItIeS In PortSMoutH In tHe tHe Great war Great war on 4 august 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. originally perceived as a short campaign to curtail Germanic imperialism, it developed into a four-year long war of attrition. the Great war is justifiably associated with the horrors of trench warfare and the death of a generation but history has overlooked the home fronts’ colossal contribution to victory. this is the fascinating, but forgotten story of how these towns and cities provided the sinews for war, and made a significant contribution to the comprehensive defeat of Germany.

JoHnnY get Your gun John F Tucker the author contrasts the beauties of the French countryside with the ugliness of widespread death and destruction, and paints a picture of French country life hardly less squalid than the soldiers’ own lot. But above all, he makes the reader realise what it was like to fight in the war to end all wars.these are the memoirs of one infantryman, but through his eyes a vivid canvas of the whole war gradually unfolds. originally published in 1978, this edition brings this classic book back into print for the great War Centenary and includes a new introduction from eminent author nigel Cave.

Carole McEntee-Taylor
this book tells the story of an infantry officer on the Western Front from 1915–1918, and differs from others of this genre by virtue of several features: the writer’s introspective reflections on the traumatic events in which be was involved; his shrewd character sketches of his fellow officers; his strange mystical experience on the banks of the river Somme; the poignant juxtaposition of desolation wreaked by the war and his intense love of natural history, particularly birds and wild flowers. above all he believed that the whole war was a hideous mistake.
Sydney Herbert Bywater Harris was an adventurer, a man possessed of great courage and charm, who fulfilled every schoolboy fantasy and really did ‘live the dream’. a real ‘Boys own’ adventure detailing the five wars he was involved with. a remarkable life led in an era of endless possibilities... FoLLow Me! I wILL Lead you!
Preface by André Chevrillon
Charlotte Zeepvat
In March 1915, a young French artistturned soldier went missing in action. He left behind a remarkable series of letters which, due to wartime security, had to be edited and published anonymously under the title Letters of a Soldier 1914–1915. this powerful volume was for many years out of print, but this new edition corrects that unhappy situation and provides an english speaking readership with a rare and much needed insight into what it meant to experience the Great war from the sharp end during the desperate struggles of the French army fighting for its survival in 1914 and 1915.
‘Follow me! I will lead you!’ were the last words of Lt. Col. George Brenton Laurie, who commanded the 1st Battalion royal Irish rifles and was killed at neuve Chapelle in March, 1915. He died with his revolver in hand while leading his men in an assault on the German lines. Laurie left behind a remarkable collection of letters, which provide us with a privileged insight into the day to day experience of a battalion commander and his struggles to make sense of the developing madness of trench warfare.
the Great war may have made Hodgson’s reputation as a poet but it also killed him. Like so many of his generation he was an unlikely soldier and this first ground-breaking biography explores his early life and his reasons for abandoning it and volunteering for the army. today Hodgson is remembered as one of the ill-fated 9th Battalion the devonshire regiment whose fate in the opening moments of the Battle of the Somme has become one of the emblematic stories of the most costly day in British military history.

this is the extraordinary true story of a British Commando in Burma who, cut off behind enemy lines, walked 2,000 miles towards India and freedom in 1942, but was betrayed to the invading Japanese only 20 miles short of his destination, tortured by the infamous kempeitai and finally incarcerated as a Pow in rangoon’s notorious Central Jail for the rest of the war. while not an educated man, Fred tells his extraordinary story of endurance and survival with brutal honesty. His account makes for compelling reading.
Historian and collector Michael Green shows in this fascinating and graphically illustrated book that the two wars that engulfed Indochina and north and South Vietnam over 30 years were far more armoured in nature than typically thought of. By skilful use of imagery and descriptive text he describes the many variants deployed and their contribution. this fine book brings details and images of all these diverse weaponry to the reader in one volume.

Major General orde wingate (1903–1944) was the most controversial British military commander of the Second world war, and perhaps of the last hundred years. He splits opinion among soldiers, academics and writers seven decades after his death. His exploits in ethiopia and Burma, in particular his creation of the Chindits, special forces who were trained to use guerrilla tactics behind the Japanese lines, have made him into a key figure in the history of irregular warfare. But, as Simon anglim reveals, myths and misunderstandings tend to cloud understanding of wingate’s career, and he seeks to put the record straight.

the anglo-Zulu war of 1879 still intrigues both scholars and enthusiasts alike more than 130 years after it was fought. reflecting on several years’ research, keith Smith presents a series of essays which explore hitherto unanswered questions and offer fresh insights into the key battles and protagonists of this epic conflict. He presents some surprising conclusions which differ, often radically, from more orthodox views.
this authoritative, yet hugely readable, book traces the history of the Zulus from their arrival in South africa – they were not indigenous as were the koi and San population – and the establishment of Zululand. It describes the violent rise of king Shaka and his colourful successors under whose leadership the warrior nation built its fiercesome reputation. It studies the tactics and weapons employed during the numerous inter-tribal battles that occurred.

during the Second world war large numbers of small fighting boats fought in coastal waters all over the world, be they German Schnellboote, royal naval MtBs and MGBs or american Pt boats. these ‘little ships’ developed a special kind of naval warfare and acquired the buccaneering spirit of an earlier age with the close hand-to-hand battles.Bryan Cooper’s book traces the history and development of these craft from their first limited use in the First world war and, in so doing, he captures the drama of this highly individual form of combat.
this biography draws heavily on the personal diaries of the subject, robert Hichens (or ‘Hitch’ as he was universally known). after a brief description of his early life, the book focuses on his exceptional wartime experiences. Hitch was the most highly decorated rnVr officer of the war with two dSos, three dSCs and three Mentions in despatches. He was recommended for a posthumous VC. we read of his early days in vulnerable minesweepers and the dunkirk ‘dynamo’ operation, (his first dSC). the book contains detailed and graphic accounts of running battles against the more heavily armed e-boats.
daily life on these small ships is vividly described. the flotilla had a busy time showing the flag in the Levant and on combined operations in the aegean with the Greek Sacred regiment of Commandos. the culmination of their efforts was when tony’s boat, ML838, took the surrender of the Island of kos in 1945. written from the perspective of one of the “other ranks”, war of the Motor Gun Boats fills an important gap in the literature of the Second world war.

Helpfully, the authors, Phillip and nigel, have included a number of tours of accessible sites associated with the underground war.’ Britain at war

during 1915, the western Front was established as a static line that grew into a huge network of defence-indepth earthworks. Siege conditions demanded siege tactics and as the ground was everywhere mineable, the western Front was a prime candidate for underground warfare. In February 1915, eight tunnelling Companies were created and operational in Flanders from March 1915. By mid-1916, the British army had around 25,000 trained tunnellers, mostly volunteers taken from mining communities. this is their story.
Bryan Cooper
Bryan Cooper describes the early tank actions in vivid detail, with many eye-witness accounts. He tells of the courage and endurance of the crews not just in battle but in the appalling conditions in which they had to drive and fight their primitive vehicles. Scalded, scorched and poisoned with exhaust fumes, constantly threatened with being burned to death, these crews eventually laid the foundation for the allied Victory in world war I. the book is well illustrated with many original photographs which give the present day reader a glimpse of the infancy of a dominant weapon of modern war.

In Good CoMPany
Captain J.L. Hardy DSO, MC, Introduction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Hon William Fraser, Edited by David Fraser
of all the daring Pow escape stories that have come to light in the last 100 years and immortalized by Steve McQueen in the film the Great escape, the story of J.L. Hardy has to be one of the most remarkable. a Pow for three-and-a-half years, Hardy made no less than twelve escape attempts while imprisoned by the Germans in the First world war, five of which being successful. written in Hardy’s own words, this book reads like a wartime thriller or Hollywood screenplay and his Great war story makes for fascinating reading.
In Good Company is a graphic account by the Hon. william Fraser, Gordon Highlanders, of his service in the First world war. Several times wounded, he went to Flanders in 1914 with the 2nd Battalion and commanded successively a platoon, a company, a territorial battalion and a regular battalion, ending the war as a lieutenant-colonel of twenty-eight, having survived the battles of First, Second and third ypres, arras, Cambrai and the final triumphs of 1918. In Good Company gives a remarkable insight into some of the most terrible and challenging years of the army’s life.

It was an escape from a Pow camp as daring and fraught with danger as any immortalised by Hollywood. yet the story is less familiar than most – as it concerns the only German prisoner of war to escape from captivity in mainland Britain and make it home during either world war. this extraordinary story is told in Gunther’s own words for the first time in english.
the author gave up his medical studies at Freiburg university in 1914 to enlist in the German army. His writing graphically illustrates life and death in the front line, the carnage and humour that sustained soldiers of all nationalities. westmann’s insights into the social, political, religious, economic and medical aspects of war time life are particularly revealing.

when the war was declared in august 1914, one of the first acts to be implemented by the politicians and military was a strict censorship on the newspapers. as winston Churchill said: “the war is going to be fought in a fog and the best place for correspondence about the war is London, the military sought to have one of their officers, dubbed “eyewitness”, to be the official spokesman to enable them to control what the newspapers could print. Later, diaries and letters revealed how many of them really felt and they had to bear the post-war shame of not writing the truth.

napoleon Bonaparte is often credited with saying that ‘an army marches on its stomach’. a hundred years after his time, the soldiers of the Great war would do little marching. Instead, they would fight their battles from cold, muddy trenches, looking out across no Man’s Land towards another set of trenches that housed the enemy. It is one of the remarkable successes of the war that they rarely went hungry.

in Lincoln's Assassin, Jeffrey Pennington presents Booth's own story of flight and return, detailing how another was shot in his place as he escaped to nominal freedom and obscurity, leaving behind all his personal belongings and the stagelife he once knew. The larger conspiracy in which he was embroiled is unpicked in stylish fashion, exploring the political landscape in which Lincoln lived and died.

tHe PreSent PaSt Professor Ian Hodder this updated edition of Professor Ian Hodder’s original and classic work on the role which anthropology must play in the interpretation of the archaeological record. there has long been a need for archaeologists and anthropologists to correlate their ideas and methods for interpreting the material culture of past civilisations. archaeological interpretation of the past is inevitably based on the ideas and experiences of the present and the use of such ethnographic analogy has been widely adapted – and criticised, not least in Britain.

the purpose of this book is to take what we think we know about the roman Conquest of Britain from historical sources, and compare it with the archaeological evidence, which is often contradictory. archaeologists and historians all too often work in complete isolation from each other and this book hopes to show the dangers of neglecting either form of evidence. In the process it challenges much received wisdom about the history of roman Britain.
Jonathan eaton has provided the essential volume for all students of archaeology, Classical Civilisations and ancient History by condensing the entire archaeological history of Britain into one accessible volume. this brand new title outlines the archaeological history of Britain from our earliest ancestors to the 20th Century.

Ignoring early war office advice to ‘go home and sit still’, by 1918 hundreds of thousands of women from all corners of the world had lent their individual wills and collective strength to the allied cause. this book lets these all but forgotten women speak directly to us of their war, their lives, and their stories.

the Great war was the first in our history to have a deep impact on every aspect of civilian life. In an overdue attempt to portray the real effect of the war on life at home, david Bilton examines all the major events of the period and charts their effect on everyday life for those trying to live a normal existence. extensive use is made of personal accounts and the author draws on many photographs, newspaper and magazine material and ephemera to make this very informative and atmospheric.
Simon webb explores the way in which the suffragette bombers have been airbrushed from history, leaving us with a distorted view of the struggle for female suffrage. not only were the suffragettes far more aggressive than is generally known, but there exists the very real and surprising possibility that their militant activities actually delayed, rather than hastened, the granting of the parliamentary vote to British women.

on many railways, Pacific steam locomotives provided the motive power for express passenger trains throughout much of the early to mid 20th century before being replaced by diesel and electric locomotives and high speed trains. the most famous express locomotives in the uk were from the Pacific class including Flying Scotsman, Mallard and duchess of Hamilton. this title tells the story of these trains accompanied by many fantastic b&w and colour photographs.

British railway disasters looks at the most serious railway accidents from the origins of the development of the train up to the present day. Seriousness is judged on the number of those who died. Information gleaned from various newspaper reports is compared with official reports on the accidents.
It was the railway’s titanic. an horrific crash involving five trains in which 226 died and 246 were injured, it remains the worst disaster in the long history of Britain’s rail network. the location was the isolated signal box at Quintinshill, Most of the casualties were Scottish soldiers on their way to fight in the Gallipoli campaign. the real Story Behind Britain’s worst rail disaster – when truth Joined the death toll, exposes what really happened at Quintinshill – and why.
railways kill! we forget that now as British railways are one of the safest ways of travelling. that they are so is the result of lessons learnt from history. For there have been many hundreds of railways disasters. this book looks at some of the most famous as well as some that have been all but forgotten, matching some graphic illustrations with eyewitness accounts of people who were there and the confidential reports of the accident investigators who worked out what had gone wrong.

the Brighton bombing in 1984 was the most audacious terrorist attack ever on the British Government. Certainly it was the most ambitious since the Gunpowder plot of 1605. the Provisional I.r.a. detonated a bomb at the Grand Hotel on 12th october 1984. It came very close to wiping out most of the Government, including the Prime Minister, Margaret thatcher. this is the complete story of this controversial moment in history.
elizabeth Peacock served as MP for Batley and Spen for 14 years and was one of the most outspoken politicians during her time at westminster. In this candid, honest and often very funny autobiography, elizabeth reveals what it was like to work at westminster during those turbulent years. She offers frank assessments of the men and women she worked with including Margaret thatcher, John Major and many others. a completely absorbing and insightful read.

the ten Scotland yard detectives, featured in the Guv’nors, are unique. Such a group of intrepid crimebusters will never exist again. they possessed only the most rudimentary education; none had a degree. Intuition and knowledge of their ‘manor’ counted for more than dna and databases. they worked tirelessly in the pursuit of criminals, used informants, worked on hunches and grabbed hold of investigations and shook them until every piece of evidence was unearthed. Criminals trembled when these detectives were after them because, once they were nicked, they stayed nicked.
the war years, the secret post-war Ghost Squad, the horse-doping scandals, the Great train robbery, the Bank of america robbery, Supergrasses and corruption are recounted with its scrupulous attention to detail. the book is filled with thrilling, amusing and always compelling anecdotes from the men who were there. It was the Flying Squad who inspired the popular tV series. this book reveals what life was really like in the Sweeney.
this book is an insight into the life of an ordinary guy who has led an extraordinary life, who has opened deaths door and closed it again, but still had time to smile at life as he endured the battle with cancer. Fighting his way back to return to duty at the yard with one lung and continuing his career, this is the story of guts and determination. to take on the Chinese triads in their own back yard and and come out the other side is astonishing in itself, but along with all the ups and downs in his life this ordinary guy’s approach to life is one of optimism and fun. this book will certainly make you laugh at times and cry at others, you can live his life along side him on every page.
Sixty years ago, the discovery of bodies at 10 rillington Place in notting Hill, London, led to one of the most sensational, shocking and controversial serial murder cases in British criminal history – the case of John Christie. a painstaking, scholarly reassessment of the evidence – and of Christie’s life – is overdue, and that is what Jonathan oates provides in this gripping biography of a serial killer.

what motivated John George Haigh to murder at least six people, then dissolve their corpses in concentrated sulphuric acid? How did this intelligent, well-educated man from a loving, strongly religious family of Plymouth Brethren become a fraudster, a thief, then a serial killer? In the latest of his best-selling studies of criminal history, Jonathan oates reinvestigates this sensational case of the late 1940s.

this book provides a detailed account of the men tasked with tracking down the most notorious thieves in British history. It examines the investigation in detail and asks how it would contrast with the methods used today should a similar incident take place. Geoff Platt examines what happened to these men after the investigation was closed and the effect it had on both their personal and professional lives.
railways have long held a special place in British criminal history. railways and trains create special conditions – and opportunities – for criminal acts. two legendary largescale robberies took place on the British railways – the Great Bullion robbery of 1855 and the Great train robbery of 1963 – and these extraordinary episodes are often used as examples of the ultimate in criminal audacity. But as Jonathan oates shows in this powerful selection of case studies, most railway crime is less sensational yet, in many ways, more revealing.

the story of Fred wensley, a Somerset gardener who joined the Metropolitan Police in 1888 and retired, forty-one years later as Chief Constable of the CId, is an extraordinary one. after an abortive attempt to catch ‘Jack the ripper’ by nailing strips of bicycle tyres to the soles of his boots, wensley got stuck into arresting the ne’erdo-wells of whitechapel, where he would spend twenty-five years of his service. wensley’s career was dogged with controversy; when Stinie Morrison was convicted of murder, was he, as he claimed, framed by wensley? an exciting new read.
For a hundred and twenty years, the identity of the whitechapel murderer known to us as Jack the ripper has both eluded us and spawned a veritable industry of speculation. this book names him. Mad doctors, russian lunatics, bungling midwives, railway policemen, failed barristers, weird artists, royal princes and whiteeyed men. all of these and more have been put in the frame for the whitechapel murders. where ingenious invention and conspiracy theories have failed, common sense has floated out of the window. M.J. trow, in this gripping historical reinvestigation, cuts through the fog of speculation, fantasy and obsession that has concealed the identity of the most famous serial murderer of all time.
who was Inspector Frederick abberline, the lead detective in the Jack the ripper case? why did he and his fellow policemen fail to catch the most notorious serial killer of Victorian england? what was he like as a man, as a professional policeman, one of the best detectives of his generation? and how did he investigate the sequence of squalid, bloody murders that repelled – and fascinated – contemporaries and has been the subject of keen controversy ever since? Here at last in M.J. trow’s compelling biography of this pre-eminent Victorian policeman are the answers to these intriguing questions.

the fighting was at its bloodiest in the Village of Ligny but as the darkness fell and lightning lanced out of dark rain clouds napoleon released the Imperial Guard and a whole corps of cavalry into the attack around the village. the aging Blucher was pinned beneath his horse as he desperately urged his men to hold the heights above Ligny. the Prussians though were beaten but not defeated and withdrew to the north from the scene of napoleon’s last victory to regroup.
Hougoumont & d’erlon’s attack is the second part in the explosive four part series, the waterloo Collection, which covers the entire waterloo Campaign from napoleon’s return to France and ensuing battles to his final pursuit and eventual surrender to the British. the film was shot on location on the very field of waterloo where the terrible events of this most iconic of battles took place. Brought to life with re-enactment on the battlefield by the regiments of the napoleonic Society and leading authorities on the battle, Hougoumont & d’erlon’s attack is a must for any student of warfare.
the period from mid afternoon until early evening on that terrible Sunday was the time, as wellington described it, of ‘hard pounding’. the three programmes on this disc cover the Massed French Cavalry attacks led by Marshal ney, the battle fought by the kings German Legion and the 95th rifles to hold La Haie Sainte and the adjacent sand pit. the Prussian march to Plancenoit and the bloody battle fought in and around the village is the subject of the third programme.
the climax of the battle is covered in the fourth and final disc in the series, with programmes on the final attack and defeat of the Imperial Guard and the Pursuit by the Prussians in the immediate aftermath of the battle to Genappe. the final programme in the collection covers the last battle of the napoleonic era fought at wavre, the day after waterloo and the allied pursuit to Paris. this disc also contains programmes that detail the clothing and equipment of a Highlander and a soldier of the 95th rifles.

Filmed on the ground by the Battlefield History tV team, the film takes the viewer to the scenes of the action following the resistance and the SaS in the early phases of the operation. Bulbasket’s first phase culminated with the men on the ground calling in an airstrike by Mosquito fighter bombers that destroyed eleven vital German petrol trains. In finding the enemy fuel and directing the attack a few men deep behind the enemy lines had a truly significant impact on German operations in normandy
Continuing the story of operation Bulbasket the Battlefield History tV team of soldier historians follow the development of the attacks on the railways in order to delay the arrival of crucial German re-enforcements in normandy. they find the clandestine drop zones where the main body and for the first time jeeps dropped, look at the targets (railway bridges and junctions) and camps deep in isolated forests, before examining how it all started to unravel.
Filmed in collaboration with the Bletchley Park trust, the team have been given complete access to the building and it’s official history, culminating in a complete and detailed history of the site from it’s vital use as an intelligence base to it’s conversion as a museum in 1993.

in this brilliant and profoundly moving collection of ‘farewell letters’ written by servicemen and women to their loved ones, siân Price offers a remarkable insight into the hearts and minds of some of the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the past three hundred years. Be it an epitaph dictated on a napoleonic battlefield, a staunch, unsentimental letter written by a victorian officer, or an email from a soldier in modern day afghanistan, these voices speak eloquently and forcefully of the tragedy of war and answer that fundamental human need to say goodbye.
Philip kaplan presents us here with a riveting account of the allied experience behind enemy lines, detailing the trials and tribulations experienced by the British and american airmen who were shot down in european skies during World War two, to be incarcerated ‘behind the wire’ in enemy camps. With eloquence and a clear enthusiasm for the subject at hand, the author describes how various individuals adjusted to their incarceration.
at the height of the bitter battle for mount longdon during the falklands War, 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment’s assault has stalled in the face of determined resistance. With his platoon held up by an argentine machine gun, it falls to sergeant ian mckay to act. this is the story of ian mckay: the last British hero of the twentieth century.
captivity, slavery and survival as a far east PoW is the incredibly moving story of gus anckorn, a British soldier who was captured by the Japanese and held for over three and a half years. Before the war, gus was a magician and throughout the war, entertained both fellow soldiers and Japanese guards with his tricks. this is an incredibly moving book and will surely be considered as one of the classic far east PoW stories.
