Michael Forrest By bringing together many threads of information, including extracts from British intelligence sources that had previously determined that a naval attack alone would not succeed, this definitive work examines the flaws of winston churchill’s strategy and identifies the inadequacies of pitting warships against shore fortifications.

the Battle of Jutland was the greatest naval engagement of the ww1, if not any war. this is a fresh account of this historic naval engagement, offering fascinating insight into the events proceding the action, the tactics during the battle and the political and military fall-out. the book draws on released official records and includes personal accounts.

written with insight and authority by the man who commanded the naval forces, this book provides a fascinating insider’s view of an operation that did not always run smoothly but whose results look all the more impressive when compared with the recent history of iraq.

this book also takes a close look at the disaster which befell her and, with the help of leading experts, the authors examine the circumstances of her loss and try to determine why this magnificent vessel was lost in a mere eighteen minutes.

here the aurthors show that many trials were grossly unfair and incompetent. Many of the condemned men had been soldiers of exemplary behaviour, courage and leadership but had cracked under the dreadful strain of trench warfare. this acclaimed book is the authority on this shameful saga.

as the author makes very clear, a totally unnecessary cloud of secrecy has for years enveloped all the documents relating to first world war courts martial. Many, indeed, have simply disappeared. here, surviving papers are now available for public inspection.

according to the official records of the British army a total of 346 officers and men were summarily executed at dawn following their convictions by courts martial in the field between the outbreak of the first world war and the end of March, 1920. this book reveals for the first time the grim and sometimes horrific details of these trials and executions.

‘it is a soldier’s tale cut in stone to melt all hearts’. thus winston churchill wrote in his introduction to a P herbert’s novel The Secret Battle, a book inspired by and quite clearly based on the execution of Sub-Lieutenant edwin dyett of the nelson Battalion, 63rd (royal naval) division on 5 January 1917, for desertion in the face of the enemy.

recent books, many by Pen and Sword, such as Shot at dawn have highlighted the shocking cases of young British soldiers in the great war being executed by their own side. all too often their trials were cursory and the evidence flimsy. this scandal has appalled right-minded people of all polotical pesuasions. this book examines in depth the case of a young Jewish boy, aby Beverstein who enlisted in the Middlesex regiment.

Pollard was a natural soldier who believed himself (correctly as it turned out) to be invulnerable. he revelled in combat and unlike the vast majority of his peers claimed to enjoy going into action. this extraordinary mindset is borne out by his well documented acts of selfless courage. this is a fascinating study of a courageous patriot who saw action throughout the great war.

Military historian terry crowdy has edited dean’s letters and diaries, never previously published, adding additional notes and material from official reports to give the reader context. the result is a moving, often amusing and inspiring portrait of a little-known hero of two world wars.

Surprisingly, this is the first biography of this most remarkable man, for which ann clayton has been given access to all the family papers. these include hundreds of his letters, but she has also unearthed eyewitness accounts of his bravery which, typically, he was at pains to gloss over.

in Liverpool local heroes tend to be drawn from football or the music business or from the period when the city was one of Britain’s greatest ports. although it has produced many military heroes, only double vc winner noel chavasse has had the recognition he deserves. Robin Prior & Trevor Wilson this is a history of world war i, seen through the eyes of Sir henry rawlinson, a middle-ranking commander who frequently acted under general haig. By examining rawlinson’s role in the war, the authors are able to follow the actual events of the battlefield and show how they related to the strategies of the high command.

the never-before-published papers of general Sir thomas d’oyly Snow provide a remarkable insight into the mindset of the great war commanders. despite being severely injured during the first Battle of the Marne – when his horse fell and rolled over him, cracking his pelvis – Snow served at some of the most important battles of the western front.

this is the first part of a planned four-volume series focusing on a hitherto largely neglected aspect of the great war on the western front – the war underground. the subject has fascinated visitors to the battlefields from the very beginning of battlefield pilgrimages in the years immediately after the armistice.

Sir John norton-griffiths was one of a breed of adventurer, pioneer, entrepreneur and soldier whose like is very seldom seen. always a controversial figure, he died in mysterious circumstances. this is the story of a true maverick, a formidable force and legend wherever he went.

when wwi froze into a static line of trenches stretching from the north Sea to the Swiss border, the most obvious means of protection was some form of shell-proof shelter which from which fire could be returned in safety, hence the development of the pill box. this is their history.

Simon Jones’s graphic history of underground warfare during the great war uses personal reminiscences to convey the danger and suspense of this unconventional form of conflict. he describes how the underground soldiers of the opposing armies engaged in a ruthless fight for supremacy.

in this, the first comprehensive survey of this exciting new field, andrew robertshaw and david kenyon introduce the reader to the techniques that are employed and record, in vivid detail, many of the remarkable projects that have been undertaken.

this first volume covers many facets of the history of the royal navy during the pre-war decade, including the economic and political background such as the 1906 Liberal government hostility towards naval spending.

this second volume in the series begins with the embarrassing escape of the german ship goeben, before moving on to the defeat at coronel, soon avenged off the falkland islands. Marder then turns his attention to the humiliation of the dardenelles.

the third volume deals with the controversial clash between the german high Seas fleet and the British grand fleet and Battlecruiser fleet at Jutland and its immediate aftermath, and the author’s intricate charting of this great battle is still recognised and a major step forward in our understanding of the events.

the fourth volume covers the period from Jellicoe’s arrival at the admiralty to deal with the u-boat menace until his dismissal a year later. Mounting losses brought about the introduction of the convoy system and the turn of the tide in anti-submarine warfare. the volume also looks at the beginnings of naval aviation.

this last volume describes the royal navy’s final triumph. the convoy system brought rewards and the uS navy arrived in european waters. the striking 1918 raid on zeebrugge was a big morale booster, and in november 1918 Beatty received the surrender of the german high Seas fleet.

this is much more than just another book to add to the thousands on the great war. it sets out to fill a gap. written for the layman by a layman (who is also an articulate and experienced battlefield guide) it summarises the key events and contributions of key individuals, some well, others unknown but with a story to tell.

geoff Bridger’s great war handbook answers many of the basic questions newcomers ask when confronted by this enormous and challenging subject – not only what happened and why, but what was the great war like for ordinary soldiers who were caught up in it. his comprehensive survey of every aspect of the soldier’s life is an essential guide for anyone who is eager to gain an all-round understanding of the nature of the conflict.

Matthew Richardson, Foreword by Peter Liddle the opening battles on the western front marked a watershed in military history. a dramatic, almost napoleonic war of movement quickly gave way to static, attritional warfare in which modern weaponry had forced the combatants to take to the earth. these dramatic developments were recorded in graphic detail by soldiers who were eyewitnesses to them.

the great war illustrated 1914 covers the outbreak of hostilities, the early battles, the war at sea, forming of the great trench line stretching from the coast to the Swiss border and ends with the xmas truce. Some images will be familiar – many will be seen for the first time by a new generation interested in the months that changed the world for ever.

the research for this book commenced in 1988 while the author was serving in the army. in the past the author spent many days on the first and Second world war battlefields wondering precisely where the victoria cross actions took place. he resolved to find out.

the author was one of the most significant characters in the history of naval aviation, winning a vc in wwi during a hair-raising career as a pilot and later playing a major part in crucial developments like arrestor gear, deck barriers and the ‘island’ superstructure during the inter-war years. his active and hugely important life in aviation is related with charm and humour – a compelling memoir.

with a Smile and a wave provides a vivid picture of the squalor and danger of war, the backbreaking hardship of trench life and of the challenges of pioneer air fighting. it draws extensively on captain Liddell’s own letters and diaries and exposes the character and courage of the man in his own often compelling and moving words.

this fascinating book was written by the brother of Lanoe hawker vc dSo as a tribute. for a better insight into combat air operations hawker vc – the first rfc ace is unlikely to be surpassed, thanks to the extensive use of first-hand accounts.

this intriguing book recounts the stories of eleven spies, who were shot in the tower of London during world war one.

rupert Brooke’s short life was filled to brimming with drama and romance. today he is the best known of that extraordinary group of British Poets of the great war. tragically his life was cut short but not before he produced arguably the finest poetry of the twentieth century, the best examples of which are in this book, along with his biography.

the wipers times was the Private eye of the Ypres Salient during ww1. edited, while under bombardment, by a battalion commander in the Sherwood foresters, written by soldiers actually in the trenches and distributed by ration-wagon and ammunition-mule. the paper bears vivid witness to the shocking realities of trench warfare.

Jack Sheldon’s latest book in his acclaimed ‘german army’ series concentrates on german aspects of the bitter battle of cambrai november/december 1917. Making full use of primary source material he first covers the defensive battle 20–29 november followed by the counterattack which saw the german army regain not only most of the ground lost and more besides.

neil weir died in 1967, but it was not until 2009 that his grandson, Mike Burns, discovered his diary among some boxes he had been left, and learnt that his grandfather had served as an officer in the 10th Battalion argyll and Sutherland highlander throughout the first world war. in the diary, and the accompanying letters we hear the authentic voice of a first world war soldier and get an insight into his experiences on the western front and elsewhere.

guardsman frederick noakes fought on the western front for the last 18 months of the great war. in 1934, he wanted to write up his ‘adventures’ while his memory was still ‘undimmed’, using the letters he wrote home during 1917–1919 as the basis for the memoir. his articulate and effective prose gives a voice to the average soldier in the trenches.

John MaSefieLd’S great war

Gerard, J.L., & Christine Garvin

Dr Philip Errington

this fascinating collection of letters traces the exchanges between a young subaltern on the front, gerard ‘ged’ garvin, and his mother and father at home. correspondence was eagerly awaited by all. in a letter J. L. garvin sent to his son 21 July 1916 he wrote: ‘of course there’s no fresh letter from you and we didn’t expect it. But we hope, all the same, to get word tomorrow …’ ged was killed the very next day. he was just twenty years old.

John Masefield wrote four books on the great war: gallipoli, the old front Line, war and the future and Battle of the Somme. these have been acclaimed as perceptive and beautiful crafted works, which bring home the full horror and hopelessness of war. this is the first opportunity for historians and general readers to purchase all four in a handsome yet reasonably priced volume which is collectable.

the war on western front from 1914 to 1918 remains one of the notoriously great tragedies of the twentieth century. Paddy griffith’s short history of the conflict provides an accessible primer to an enormous and fascinating subject. his account concentrates on the part played by British expeditionary force and the americans in the conflict.

book explains what part the British expeditionary force played in bringing world war i to an end. tim travers shows in detail how an allied victory was achieved. he focuses on the British army on the western front in relation to the themes of ‘command’ and ‘technology’, drawing on a wide range of sources from archives in three countries.

author’s history of the world war, 1914–1918, and first published in 1936, world war i in outline is a compact but comprehensive history of the “war to end all wars.” divided into five parts representing each year of the war, Liddell hart discusses the war on land, at sea, and in the air while skillfully incorporating the political events occurring at the same time.

in this authoritative and readable account the authors, drawing on all the information now available, describe how the Joint force came to be sent, the sometimes acrimonious discussions between the allie and the varied events which led to some later disillusionment in the italian political scene.

zillebeke’s small churchyard military cemetery provides the inspiration for this charming piece of military and social history. the outcome is a fascinating and moving book that emphasises the indiscrimatory nature of war.

rommel’s role at the Battle of caporetto in 1917 where the italian army was humiliated at a catastrophic defeat has received little attention yet it was the springboard for his future success. this makes for a fascinating and important story.

this was one of the most decisive and clear-cut campaigns of the great war. Yet the performance of the ottomans has often received less attention than that of the allied army they defeated. this perceptive new study, concentrates on the ottoman side of the campaign.

in this classic book, Peter Burness provides the best account ever published of the formation and training of the Light horse regiments, the battle itself and a careful consideration of how the suicidal charges were allowed to continue when any hope of success was lost.

although it reads as a novel, Sniper Jackson can be justifiably viewed as ‘faction’ weaving true events around a mythical character. this was a commonplace method of writing at a time when many serving or ex-soldiers did not want individuals or events in their books to be identified, and many used pseudonyms to conceal their identities.

H Hesketh-Prichard, DSO, MC

Dennis Showalter & Harold Deutsch in this expertly written book, historians suggest what might have been if key events during the war had gone differently, from the Munich crisis to the dropping of the first atom bomb, including hitler’s declaration of war on the united States and the d-day landings.

in this account the author covers the wide canvas of war, from off duty moments in grubby estaminets and brothels, to life in shell torn trenches, going over the top with equally terrified yet resigned comrades, being a casualty, to periods of numbing boredom. Superbly crafted and phrased this will be a revelation to even the most informed student of the great war. Private x writes with complete honesty and avoids sentimentality.

the first mass attack by tanks, supported for the first time by aircraft of the royal flying corps, at cambrai on 20 november, 1917 achieved a breakthrough against the hindenburg Line. the defeat of germany at last seemed possible. this fine book examines all aspects of the affair.

the author reconstructs the tank actions that took place between late September and november when the Somme offensive was closed down. his account gives a vivid insight into the actions and experiences of the tank crews, and it shows the appalling dangers they faced as they maneuvered their machines towards the enemy. essential reading for anyone who wants to follow in the tracks of the tanks as they lumbered across the battlefield nearly 100 years ago.

harry Moon served on the Somme with the royal Sussex before transferring to B Battalion Machine gun corps in January 1917, (later the tank corps) to serve in Mk iv tanks. his first tank action was at Messines and the 3rd Battle of Ypres followed in July 1917. after descriptions of fascines and wire clearing equipment trials he gives a thrilling account of the mass use of armour at cambrai. a very rare great war tank memoir with many previously unseen photos.

trench warfare was not an aberration of the western front. rather, it was a watershed in the upheaval in warfare which started in the 1850s. the book examines the evolution of trench warfare, technologically and tactically, from the crimean war to the korean war, during which time developments in military technology often advanced far beyond tactical thinking.

ian Passingham’s graphic new study draws on a wide range of original german, British and french sources, and it features previously unpublished eyewitness accounts and photographs.

reeling from the huge losses in earlier battles, the german army was in no shape to absorb the impact of the Battle of Messines and the subsequent bitter attritional struggle. as this book demonstrates, at trench level the individual soldier of the german army was still capable of fighting hard, despite being outnumbered and outgunned.

Jack Sheldon

Foreword by James Beach

using his skill at archival research, Sheldon describes how the 1915 experience shaped the german approach to the cataclysmic battles that lay ahead, leading to the ultimate, previously unthinkable defeat of the kaiser’s germany.

By drawing on a very large number of german sources, many of them previously unpublished, Jack Sheldon throws new light on a familiar story. “An extremely useful book that deserves a place on the shelves of everyone interested in WW1 …” gary Sheffield

Britain’s hospital ships were armed and repainted in drab colours, and sailed in protected convoys. germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas. the author describes the political and naval aspects of this saga.

Loos is a small mining town in northern france. But in September 1915, it was the centre of one of the most intense and bloody battles of the first world war with 60,000 casualties. the author has gathered many survivors’ accounts and diaries and through their words reveals a truly horrific tale lightened by the heroism of the participants.

the Battle of the Lys, fought in april 1918, was critical for the allies and for germany. the outcome of the great war hung in the balance. as chris Baker shows, the declining force of the german attack revealed deficiencies in material, organization and morale that led to their ultimate defeat.

Massacre on the Marne is a graphic reconstruction of the experiences of a small closely knit group of fighting men – the 2/5th Battalion of the west Yorkshire regiment – in the great war. fraser Skirrow records how they learnt the painful lessons of trench warfare and became a highly efficient fighting unit.

in addition to a full run of the Lee Magazine, the author has drawn on a wide range of archive sources that include unpublished letters, diaries, memoirs and newspapers. fromelles 1916 gives an unrivalled insight into the life and times of an english village in the first world war – a way of life swept away for ever by the changes ushered in by the conflict.

Hugh Cecil, Peter Liddle facing armageddon is the first scholarly work on the 1914-18 war to explore, on a world-wide basis, the real nature of the participants experience. Sixty-four scholars from all over the globe deliver the fruits of recent research in what civilians and servicemen passed through, in the air, on the sea and on land.

Passchendaele is one of the most evocative names associated with the great war. for over 80 years, the battle has epitomized pointless slaughter on an unimaginable scale. Yet, as Martin Marix evans demonstrates in this gripping and perceptive reassessment, some common assumptions about the course of the battle – and the ways in which it was fought – are mistaken and should be looked at again.

this presents, in one superb volume, the complete technical history of British capital ship design and construction during the dreadnought era. More than 500 photographs and line drawings illustrate the text.

freshly illustrated, this second edition is a timely tribute to the gallant pioneers who created the legacy of dogged courage, determination, and standards of excellence which remain the proud hallmarks of the royal navy’s submarine service today.

Based largely on original research, this sophisticated book is more than a catalogue of the weapons, offering insight into some of the most important technical and operational factors influencing the war at sea. in this respect it is more broadly significant than its title might suggest.

this is a dramatic and littleknown story of the first world war, when the actions of a few men shaped the fate of nations. under the leadership of a few brilliant, audacious men, they unleashed a series of raids that threatened Britain’s war effort and challenged the power and prestige of the royal navy.
