Malcolm Smith

Carole McEntee-Taylor

Mike Rosel

Sydney herbert Bywater harris was an adventurer, a man possessed of great courage and charm, who fulfilled every schoolboy fantasy and really did ‘live the dream’. a real ‘Boys own’ adventure detailing the five wars he was involved with. a remarkable life led in an era of endless possibilities …

Lest we Forget? in the case of captain robert alexander (alec) Little, australia’s greatest ‘ace’, it would seem that we did. this eminently researched and reverential history charts the course of an impressive career cut tragically short. in line with the centenary anniversary of the start of the First world war, it serves as a timely reminder of just one of the many skilled and tragically doomed young pilots of early twentieth-century aviation history.

Following in the same style as his previous book of Fleet air arm recollections, malcolm Smith has collected a compendium of reminiscences from pilots who flew for the royal navy and the royal marines during the First world war. he includes first-hand testimonies from pilots manning early seaplane stations and an enthralling account from F.J. rutland who became the first pilot to take off in a Sopwith Pup from a platform on the roof of one of hmS yarmouth’s gun turrets.

Utilising images drawn from his large personal archive of photographs, Franks profiles some of the greatest and most notorious aces, as well as the aircraft in which they flew.

this new publication from michael Belafi offers some truly intriguing content. Photographs of the mighty Zeppelin at all stages of development feature in a publication that aims to chart the entire course of the airship’s history, exploring each facet of its history, and concludes by assessing the legacy of rigid airship development, still felt to this day.

in comparison to their British and German counterparts, the French airmen of the Great war are not well known. yet their aerial exploits were just as remarkable, and their contribution to the war effort on the western Front was equally important. that is why ian Sumner’s vivid history of the men of the French air force during the war is of such value. he tells their story using the words of the pioneering pilots and observers themselves, drawn from memoirs, diaries, letters, and contemporary newspapers, magazines and official documents.

Jack Sheldon and Nigel Cave

Nigel Cave and Jack Sheldon

Jerry Murland

authors nigel cave and Jack Sheldon tell the story of the men who fought over the unremarkable undulating ground that was to become firmly placed in British national conscience ever afterwards. when, in october 1914, the newly created German Fourth army attacked west to seize crossings over the yser, prior to sweeping south in an attempt to surround the BeF, two things prevented it. to the north, it was the efforts of the Belgian army, reinforced by French troops, coupled with controlled flooding of the polders but, further south, the truly heroic defence of Langemarck, for three days by the BeF and then by the French army, was of decisive importance. the village stood as a bulwark against any further advance to the river or the town of ypres. here the German regiments bled to death in the face of resolute allied defence and any remaining hope of forcing a decision in the west turned to dust.

at the end of october 1914 an increasingly desperate Falkenhayn, aware that his offensive in Flanders had stalled, decided to make one final effort to break through the allied lines south of ypres. Pulling together a large strike force, the socalled army Group Fabeck, he launched a violent offensive designed to capture the messines ridge and to use this dominating terrain as a springboard for a further advance. inadequately resourced, assembled in a rush, this thrust was soon in trouble. confused fighting in the wooded areas to the south of the menin road slowed the advance and initial attempts to gain a foothold on the ridge failed. a supreme effort by the men of the 26th infantry division ultimately brought about the capture of the town of messines and similar heroics by the Bavarian 6th reserve division led to the fall of wytschaete, but it was all in vain. yet again a valiant allied defence had buckled, but not broken.

this new title looks at the effect of the increasing width of gap that existed between the two corps of the BeF, the apparent impotence of Sir John French and GhQ that was revealed as the retreat continued and the essential role of the regimental officer in keeping units together.the book is divided into 3 stages and each stage is the subject of a detailed car tour that takes the battlefield tourist to each of the locations described above. the book is supported by over 120 maps and photographs and two appendices.

Paul Reed

here we have a series of walks designed to take the visitor across this most heavily fought-over part of the western Front. the ‘immortal salient’ has had its fair share of guide books, but this one takes the reader across the landscape in the way that ‘tommy’ would have seen it on foot. Paul reed is a leading military historian specialising in the two world wars. he has worked as a researcher and battlefield guide, and is the author of several books on the great war.

this battlefield guide and history will focus mainly on the events of attack that fell on the British sector of the front between the 27th – 1st June 1918, although the offensive which also befell the French forces will not be totally neglected. this area had been a French held sector since 1915 and the French had fought one of its major engagements of the war here in 1917, the ill-fated nivelle offensive. French monuments and cemeteries dominate the landscape. the British were also here in 1914, and they too have left reminders of their relative brief presence. however, the actions fought here early in the war tend to be found mainly to the west of the sector.

the Battle for mametz wood is normally associated with the endeavours of the 38th welsh division and was the first of those great battles to secure possession of the woodlands of the Somme. the author looks at events after the 1st July, but also relates the story of the 17th northern division who attacked the quadrangle, a defensive system guarding the western approaches to the wood. also related is the demise of both generals commanding these divisions who were sent home. written by an experienced and respected author, this book covers a neglected yet accessible area on the Somme front.

the kaiSer’S BattLe Martin Middlebrook at 9.30am on 21 march 1918, the last great battle of the First world war commenced when three German armies struck a massive blow against the weak divisions of the British third and Fifth armies. it was the first day of what the Germans called the kaiserschlacht (‘the kaiser’s Battle’), the series of attacks that were intended to break the deadlock on the western Front, knock the British army out of the war, and finally bring victory to Germany. in the event the cost of the gamble was so heavy that once the assault faltered, it remained for the allies to push the exhausted German armies back and the war was at last over.

Germany’S hiGh Sea FataL FortniGht FLeet in the FirSt Duncan Marlor worLd war numerous books have been Admiral Reinhard Scheer in his own account of the war in the north Sea, first published in 1920, admiral Scheer, the German commander at Jutland, gives his own explanation for the failure of either fleet to achieve the decisive victory expected of it, particularly the failure of his own operation plans that resulted in the battle of Jutland. this book is an invaluable account of one of the most important theatres of the First world war, written by one of its most senior commanders.

over the toP Peter Tsouras, Spencer Jones

published about the First world war but few have focused on the machinations in the British parliament and the role it played in the decision to go to war. Britain, after all, could not have entered the conflict without clear approval from mPs. one hundred years on, Fatal Fortnight re-examines the arguments which Parliament heard against British war entry and reflects on how the world might have been had the decision gone a different way.

although separated from the modern reader by a full century, the First world war continues to generate controversy and interest as the great event upon which modern history pivoted. this thought-provoking book explores ten alternate scenarios in which the course of the war is changed forever. how would the war have changed had the Germans not attacked France but turned their main thrust against russia; or had the Greeks joined the allies at Gallipoli? what if the americans intervened in 1915, rather 1917? expertly written by leading military historians, this is a compelling and credible look at what might have been.

‘this is a wellresearched, detailed and compelling story.’defender magazineBilly Sing was a small, dark man – and a deadly killer. when, as a member of the australian imperial Force 5th Light horse, he was thrust onto the narrow strip of land held by the australians on Gallipoli, he witnessed the terrible effects of the turkish snipers and decided to fight fire with fire. Using a simple Lee enfield .303 rifle, Sing began to pick off unwary turks who exposed themselves. this a vivid account of the merciless nature of the fighting in the Gallipoli campaign from an award-winning journalist and bestselling author.

NEW

Using the letters and diaries of those who fought and died in this famously futile action, awardwinning journalist and best-selling author, John hamilton takes the reader on a journey from the rush to recruit in august 1914 when war was declared, through the training camps to the unforgiving terrain of Gallipoli and the unbending turkish defenders, and finally to that fateful morning and that fatal charge.

the son of a former Premier of western australia, hugo throssell, volunteered to join the imperial australian Force which was shipped to Gallipoli in 1915. he was a member of the 10th australian Light horse which fought in a dismounted role in Gallipoli. he was involved in the famous charge of the 10th Light horse at the Battle of the nek and the Battle of hill 60 where his actions saw him being awarded the victoria cross. meticulously researched, and beautifully written, this is a moving tale of heroism and patriotism which ended in sad and disturbing circumstances.

FiGhtinG the Great war at Sea

Phillip Pattee

Norman Friedman

the naval story of the First world war is so often told in relation the the north Sea and the war in europe, but in this new book the author concentrates on the royal navy’s offensive operations further afield and argues that they were not, as often portrayed, unnecessary sideshows but absolutely critical to Britain’s very survival. a finely researched and written book for both naval enthusiasts and historians.

this radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing it describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapon technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. combat produced many surprises: some, like the impact of the mine and torpedo, are familiar, but this book also brings to light many previously unexplored subjects, like creative new tactical practices and improved command and control.

this important new work describes how the imperial German navy, which had expanded to become one of the great maritime forces in the world, second only to the royal navy, proved, with the exception of its submarines, to be largely ineffective throughout the years of conflict. this is a fascinating and perceptive analysis of a whole era, and it contributes substantially to our understanding of the war and its consequences – consequences, sadly, that helped pave the way for the third reich.

NEW

Leonard Sellers the hood Battalion saw some of the fiercest fighting of the First world war, particularly at antwerp, in the Gallipoli campaign and then again on the western Front at the ancre, at Gavrelle, and at Passchendaele. Len Sellers, whose interest in the hood Battalion was first aroused when he discovered that his great-uncle had served with them, lets the participants tell their own story, having expended prodigious labour in unearthing the many first-hand accounts of the hood’s exploits included in this book. it is indeed a tale told by heroes.

the third volume deals with the controversial clash between the German high Seas fleet and the British Grand Fleet and Battlecruiser Fleet at Jutland and its immediate aftermath, and the author’s intricate charting of this great battle is still recognised and a major step forward in our understanding of the events.

the fourth volume covers the period from Jellicoe’s arrival at the admiralty to deal with the U-boat menace until his dismissal a year later. mounting losses brought about the introduction of the convoy system and the turn of the tide in anti-submarine warfare. the volume also looks at the beginnings of naval aviation.

this last volume describes the royal navy’s final triumph. the convoy system brought rewards and the US navy arrived in european waters. the striking 1918 raid on Zeebrugge was a big morale booster, and in november 1918 Beatty received the surrender of the German high Seas Fleet. in June the following year the Germand scuttled their fleet at Scapa Flow and so came to an end a major era in naval history.

this collection of thought-provoking essays by arguably the 20th century’s greatest naval historian was first published in 1974, but their continuing relevance fully justifies this reprint. it opens with a stimulating reappraisal of the naval attack on the dardanelles, the success of which would have made the disastrous Gallipoli land campaign that followed completely unnecessary. marder identifies a number of relatively minor issues that made a failure of what was in reality a great strategic opportunity to shorten the war.

the battlecruiser hMs hood is one of the great warships of history. unmatched for beauty and charisma, unequalled for size, for 20 years the she was the glory ship of the royal Navy, flying the flag across the world in the twilight years of the British empire. here, in words, photos and colour artwork, is the story of her life, her work and her people, from the laying of her keel on the Clyde in 1916 to her awful destruction at the hands of the Bismarck in 1941.

this new book tells the story of the creation, purpose, operations and career of the Marinekorps Flandern. the Flanders harbours should have allowed the German navy to strike dangerous blows at vital British traffic in the Channel and southern North sea but the Marinekorps was unable to fulfill the great expectations of von tirpitz. the author not only explains how the German conducted operations, but also explains how the opportunites presented by the Flemish occupation were wasted away. a significant and insightful book on an important theatre of the War.

in this new book the author details their design and construction, and traces the full service history of each ship, recounting their actions, largely from first-hand German sources and official documents, many previously unpublished in english. a superb series of full-colour, speciallycommissioned computer graphics show full length profiles and topdown views of each ship in precise and clear detail.

together, the book and letters offer a fascinating insight into the life of a First World War artillery officer. lucidly written in a candid style, thorburn shows excellent observation, description and narration skills. While amateur Gunners itself is worthy of reprint, when combined with thorburn’s private letters and historical context from author ian ronayne, this book offers a unique look at a gunner’s experience during the Great War.

Billy Congreve was an exceptional soldier and an exceptional man. By the time he was killed on the somme in July 1916 at the age of twenty-five he had been awarded the Dso, MC, and the légion d’honneur, and for his many deeds of gallantry on the somme, a posthumous vC. terry Norman carefully edited his diary to set his story in the context of the war, and thus provide an exceptional picture of what an officer thought of the conduct of the war side by side with his personal grief at the loss of his friends and the wastage of human life.

During 1915, the Western Front was established as a static line that grew into a huge network of defence-indepth earthworks. siege conditions demanded siege tactics and as the ground was everywhere mineable, the Western Front was a prime candidate for underground warfare. in February 1915, eight tunnelling Companies were created and operational in Flanders from March 1915. By mid-1916, the British army had around 25,000 trained tunnellers, mostly volunteers taken from mining communities. this is their story.

written by captain a. radclyffe dugmore of the king’s own Light infantry, this personal memoir provides an excellent account of the Great war up to the Battle of the Somme. a wide ranging and perceptive relation of events, radclyffe dugmore’s pedigree as a professional writer shines through. this new re-print of radclyffe dugmore’s classic volume is a worthy addition to the primary source literature of the Great war, and casts new light on the experiences of the brave men who saw the terror of the Battle of the Somme first hand.

‘Follow me! i will lead you!’ were the last words of Lt. col. George Brenton Laurie, who commanded the 1st Battalion royal irish rifles and was killed at neuve chapelle in march, 1915. he died with his revolver in hand while leading his men in an assault on the German lines. Laurie left behind a remarkable collection of letters, which provide us with a privileged insight into the day to day experience of a battalion commander and his struggles to make sense of the developing madness of trench warfare.

The Hon William Fraser, Edited by David Fraser in Good company is a graphic account by the hon. william Fraser, Gordon highlanders, of his service in the First world war. Several times wounded, he went to Flanders in 1914 with the 2nd Battalion and commanded successively a platoon, a company, a territorial battalion and a regular battalion, ending the war as a lieutenant-colonel of twenty-eight, having survived the battles of First, Second and third ypres, arras, cambrai and the final triumphs of 1918. in Good company gives a remarkable insight into some of the most terrible and challenging years of the army’s life.

the Gallipoli campaign is generally viewed as a disastrous failure of the First world war, inadequately redeemed by the heroism of the soldiers and sailors who were involved in the fighting. But before the first landings were made, the concept of a strike at the dardanelles seemed to offer a short cut to victory in a war without prospect of end. what fuelled and what drained morale during the eight months of extraordinary human endeavour? a balanced evaluation of the Gallipoli gamble, and of the political and military leadership, are the challenging tasks which Peter Liddle sets himself in his new study of the campaign and the experience of the men who served in it.

harry askin was 22 when he enlisted at nottingham in September 1914 and was sent to train with the royal marines at Portsmouth. he set sail with the mediterranean expeditionary Force in late February 1915. on 25 april he was towed ashore to Gallipoli. So began a nine month ordeal of constant fighting and shelling on that bare and desperate Peninsula. in this diary he captures the atmosphere of danger and death. harry was among the last to withdraw and his reward was to be sent to the western Front. again he was wounded. this is a stirring memoir which paints a vivid picture of the horrors of war.

this is a reappraisal of Sir ian hamilton vcs controversial command of the Gallipoli campaign. hamilton has often been criticized for this failure and seen as the stereotypical British general clinging to outdated thinking. this fresh assessment, drawing on original archival research, shows that hamilton did display some progressive ideas and a realization that warfare was rapidly changing. Like all generals of this period he faced the challenge of unprecedented technological and tactical revolution as well as the political and media battle. it is as a case study of command in these circumstances that this book will be most valued.

Soldiers were bombarded with Field regulations, airmen with the latest updates about airborne early warning, bomb sights and radio navigation and sailors with material that helped them identify enemy aircraft and submarines and told them how to operate the new ship board weapons to destroy them. this book is concerned with the plethora of printed ephemera that was designed to educate, instruct, inform and entertain.

napoleon Bonaparte is often credited with saying that ‘an army marches on its stomach’. a hundred years after his time, the soldiers of the Great war would do little marching. instead, they would fight their battles from cold, muddy trenches, looking out across no man’s Land towards another set of trenches that housed the enemy. it is one of the remarkable successes of the war that they rarely went hungry.

the FateFUL BattLe Line

FiGhtinG on three FrontS

SniPinG in France

George S Duncan

Edited by Michael Glover

Major D.D. Ogilvie

the diaries of front-line soldiers of the Great war are relatively commonplace; contemporary drawings and paintings, other than those by the official war artists, are less so. what is extraordinary, even unique, about the Fateful Battle Line is that it combines a journal of infantry service on the western Front with sketches and finished work made at the time, often illustrating places, people and incident from the text.

this classic account, based on wartime diaries, written by major d. d. ogilvie, details the absorbing story of how the Fife and Forfar yeomanry evolved over the course of the war, and presents a rare primary source record of a hard fighting battalion that saw action on three fronts.

available for the first time in years, this is a new edition of the classic account by the adventurer and big game hunter who developed and ran the British army sniping programme in the First world war. when the war started in 1914, Germany’s edge in the sniping duel on the western Front cost thousands of British casualties. Sniping in France explains the methods hesketh-Prichard used to reverse the situation and help win the sniping war.

the book’s representation of haig is unremittingly positive; he is the British commander who rose to new heights with each succeeding crisis & brought us in the end to victory. duncan became aware, that in recent years many writers have presented to the public a portrait of haig which is so distorted as to be essentially false. this personal memoir is therefore designed to redress the balance.

Captain J.L. Hardy DSO, MC Introduction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Edited by Joy Cave

of all the daring Pow escape stories that have come to light in the last 100 years and immortalized by Steve mcQueen in the film the Great escape, the story of J.L. hardy has to be one of the most remarkable. a Pow for three-and-a-half years, hardy made no less than twelve escape attempts while imprisoned by the Germans in the First world war, five of which being successful. written in hardy’s own words, this book reads like a wartime thriller or hollywood screenplay and his Great war story makes for fascinating reading.

charlie ("Ginger") Byrne was a typical young "tommy" who had no liking or aptitude for writing, but at the age of 82, sound in body and having a mind blessed with total recall, he was persuaded to tell his story to an interested and observant listener. Joy cave has achieved the transition into print of charlie’s war, set down in the form in which he related it, with an added commentary on the larger events in which, like so many of his generation, this humble soldier found himself caught up.

Henry Gilbert Nobbs

numbering over five million men, Britain’s army in the First world war was the biggest in the country’s history. remarkably, nearly half those men who served in it were volunteers. 2,466,719 men enlisted between august 1914 and december 1915, many in response to the appeals of the Field-marshal Lord kitchener, by then a natural hero. the book will be of interest not only to those studying social, political and economic history, but also to general readers who wish to know more about the story of Britain’s citizen soldiers in the Great war.

Peter Simkins

this is the astonishing autobiographical account of henry Gilbert nobbs, an extraordinary man of inexhaustible energy whose memoirs will forever provide one of life’s enduring monuments to the human spirit. dedicated to his ever loving wife, the harrowing memories and experiences of nobbs at the Battle of the Somme and after are captured here in a rare account of what proved to be one of the most ultimately futile battles and the agonising aftermath.

Based largely on source material from school archives and histories, it looks at school life in those war years, boys with their futures on hold and the prospect of death always very close.

Forty-eight old Boys from magdalen college School, oxford were killed in the carnage of the Great war. Six of the boys are immortalised by the names of the six houses of the School. Jack Sheldon the book employs a similar format to the German army on the Somme 1914–1916 and the German army at Passchendaele; the greater part of the text is based on the words of the German participants themselves.

this new volume in the longrunning images of war series features the actions of the imperial German army at ypres from 1914-15.this volume also features a chapter on adolf hitler’s service during the Great war, which both began and ended in the ypres salient.

this book demonstrates, at trench level the individual soldier of the German army was capable of fighting extraordinarily hard, despite being outnumbered, outgunned and subjected to relentless, morale-sapping shelling and gas attacks.

this latest work by expert Jack Sheldon describes the event of Spring 1917 from the defenders’ perspective. in particular it reveals the methods the Germans used to smash the French attacks and oberst Fritz von Lossberg’s transformation of the defences in the arras front.

this book incorporates a wide range of images that encompass the actions of the German infantry and their supporting artillery. Portraits of the German troops are contrasted with surviving images of captured British prisoners of war.

it was an escape from a Pow camp as daring and fraught with danger as any immortalised by hollywood. yet the story is less familiar than most – as it concerns the only German prisoner of war to escape from captivity in mainland Britain and make it home during either world war. this extraordinary story is told in Gunther’s own words for the first time in english.

in 1913 Julius koettgen, a pacifist and a socialist, was drafted into the ranks of sapper battalion no. 30. he dutifully fought in the ranks of the kaiser’s armies during 1914 and 1915 and saw action in France and Belgium where he describes the terrible events which were to become known as ‘the rape of Belgium’ and details the extent of the fighting including being forced to form part of a firing squad.

the years 1914 to 1918 saw europe engaged in a conflict involving a greater area and a greater number of men than history had ever before recorded. in this book, captain cyril Falls, known in British academic and governmental circles as an expert in military history, discusses the military side of world war i in the light of its battles, tactics and weapons; its problems of supply and transport; its armies and their commanders. the engagements in the many theaters of war in europe, asia and africa are described in vivid detail, but particular attention is focused on the western Front, where the principal and decisive battles were fought.

this is much more than just another book to add to the thousands on the Great war. it sets out to fill a gap. written for the layman by a layman (who is also an articulate and experienced battlefield guide) it summarises the key events and contributions of key individuals, some well, others unknown but with a story to tell. to get a true picture of this monumental event in history, it is necessary to grasp the fundamentals, be they military, political, social or simply human. the slaughters at verdun, Somme and Passchendaele are no more than statistics without the stories of those that fought, drowned and died there.

rise of the tank will be concentrated on the period of the development of the tank and its use in the First world war. Using the resources of the imperial war museum, the national archives and the tank museum, rise of the tank contains lots of information available on the development and use of the early tanks as well as personal reminiscences of those who fought in them.

this well written and evocative memoir was originally published under the tile ‘a company of tanks’ it constitutes a wonderful primary source and is an invaluable addition to the library of anyone with an interest in the evolution of the tank as a decisive weapon on the battlefield. highly detailed, but nonetheless accessible this superb new illustrated edition is greatly recommended for serious enthusiasts and casual readers alike.

Bryan cooper describes the early tank actions in vivid detail, with many eye-witness accounts. he tells of the courage and endurance of the crews not just in battle but in the appalling conditions in which they had to drive and fight their primitive vehicles. Scalded, scorched and poisoned with exhaust fumes, constantly threatened with being burned to death, these crews eventually laid the foundation for the allied victory in world war i. the book is well illustrated with many original photographs which give the present day reader a glimpse of the infancy of a dominant weapon of modern war.

the author reconstructs the tank actions that took place between late September and november when the Somme offensive was closed down. his account gives a vivid insight into the actions and experiences of the tank crews, and it shows the appalling dangers they faced as they maneuvered their machines towards the enemy. essential reading for anyone who wants to follow in the tracks of the tanks as they lumbered across the battlefield nearly 100 years ago.

an innovative new history of conscientious objectors during the First world war. drawing on previously unpublished archive material, karyn Burnham reconstructs the personal stories of several men who refused to fight, bringing the reader face-to-face with their varied, often brutal, experiences.

we know that millions of soldiers were scarred by their experiences in the First world war trenches, but what happened after they returned home? Suzie Grogan reveals the First world war’s disturbing legacy for soldiers and their families. how did a nation of broken men, and ‘spare’ women cope?

the issue of military executions during the war has always been controversial and embargoes have made it difficult for researchers to get at the truth. now these two writers give us a vast amount of information. they show that trials were grossly unfair and incompetent. many of the condemned men had been soldiers of exemplary behaviour, courage and leadership but had cracked under the dreadful strain of trench warfare. this acclaimed book is the authority on this shameful saga.

conscientious objectors of the First world war: a determined resistance tells the stories of remarkable men. it looks at who they were, why they took the stand they did and how they were treated. to bring their voices and experiences to life, ann kramer, has used extensive prime source material, including interviews, memoirs and contemporary newspapers. working from these she describes what it was like for cos to face hostile tribunals, be forced into the army, defy army regulations, be brutalised and endure repeated terms of imprisonment.

when the war was declared in august 1914, one of the first acts to be implemented by the politicians and military was a strict censorship on the newspapers. as winston churchill said: “the war is going to be fought in a fog and the best place for correspondence about the war is London, the military sought to have one of their officers, dubbed “eyewitness”, to be the official spokesman to enable them to control what the newspapers could print. Later, diaries and letters revealed how many of them really felt and they had to bear the post-war shame of not writing the truth.

the Great war of 1914–1918 was the world’s first total conflict. it drew the whole population into the war effort as never before. the armed forces recruited on a scale that was previously unimaginable, and the munitions industries drew more and more citizens into the labour market. the entire national economy was thrown onto a war footing. the local newspapers of those years provide a unique picture of these momentous changes, and reporting the Great war uses their words to recapture the experience of the time.

Letters from the trenches reveals what people really thought and felt during the conflict and covers all social classes and groups – from officers to conscripts, servicewomen to conscientious objectors. Jacqueline wadsworth skilfully uses the letters to tell the human story of the First world war – what mattered to Britain’s soldiers, sailors and airmen and their feelings about the war; how the conflict changed people; and how life continued on the home Front.

this book tells the story of an infantry officer on the western Front from 1915–1918, and differs from others of this genre by virtue of several features: the writer’s introspective reflections on the traumatic events in which be was involved; his shrewd character sketches of his fellow officers; his strange mystical experience on the banks of the river Somme; the poignant juxtaposition of desolation wreaked by the war and his intense love of natural history, particularly birds and wild flowers. above all he believed that the whole war was a hideous mistake.

the book will be an extraordinary collection of stories told by six veterans themselves but also through the author’s memories of them: the remarkable, the sad, the funny, the moving. it will also feature an outstanding collection of photographs taken of the veterans as they were, as soldiers during the war together with recent images of almost all of these men, taken at home, back on the western Front, at the final veterans’ reunion, and at various investitures

Portraits of the British troops are contrasted with German prisoners of war and the endless battle to get the supply columns through to the front.

this new volume in the long-running images of war series features the actions of the British army at ypres from 1914–15. rare photographs illustrating the optimistic men of the BeF in the act of mobilization and transport to France are contrasted with photographs from the battlefield during the opening phases of the campaign, which culminated in the four-year struggle for the ypres salient. the photographs are accompanied by a fascinating text, featuring Bruce Bairnsfather’s personal description of the conditions endured by the men in the rudimentary trenches on the ypres salient during 1914-15 as the early phase of the battle for ypres raged around them.

a rare and vivid account of life on the Battlefields of the Great war, with the British army on the Somme details the experiences of war journalist william Beach thomas. one of only five men chosen in 1915 to document the war from the western Front, thomas was in the terrifying and unique position of supplying the people of england with a glimpse of the Somme.

the First world war changed the history of the world and is used as a marker for modern day history. its importance cannot be understated as it not only changed the way wars were fought, but influenced history. Up until the First world war, battles had usually been fought between two armies and not involved civilians. with the outbreak of the Great war, this all changed as military leaders looked to inflict as much damage as possible. this title covers the events that led up to the Great war, with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and disagreements between various european countries over alliances that they had made.

there is no better way to experience the devastating effect the Great war had on europe and history than visiting the battlefields themselves. visiting the Battlefields of the Great war will also contain details of the major battles, the men who fought in them and the outcome. it will be highly illustrated with many contemporary and modern day maps so its easy to see what happened where and how to find these sites now.

historian Jerry murland has researched and visited the scenes of desperate actions during late march 1918. he describes in graphic detail the battles fought by British, irish and South african regiments in the area from St Leger in the north to La Fere in the South. he unearths the extraordinary stories of unit and individual courage. he also examines the work of the royal engineers who blew bridges and disrupted lines of communication. this original approach covers battles that in many cases have only been described briefly in official histories.

when the call to arms was made in 1914 and the years of war that followed, it was answered in droves by young men including test and First class cricketers. the machine guns and gas of the western Front and other theatres did not discriminate and many hundreds of these star performers perished alongside their lesser known comrades. the author has researched the lives and deaths of over 200 top class cricketers who made the ultimate sacrifice. he includes not just British players but those from the empire. the enormity of the horror and wholesale loss of life during the Great war is well demonstrated by these moving biographies.

the unrestricted U-Boat war threatened the very survival of Britain, whose reliance on imported food and war materials was her achilles’ heel. this is a full study of the dramatic and daring raid, in stark contrast to the static trench.

the raid on Zeebrugge was a bold and daring attempt by the royal navy to avoid further suffering on the high seas. the author came across a unique collection of photographic plates, which had belonged to alfred carpenter, captain of hmS vindictive – one of the ships that played a key role in the raid on Zeebrugge – and are featured in this brand new title. this book is a tribute to the British soldiers, sailors and marines who laid down their lives for the freedom of Belgium.

this classic history of the Great war at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements – battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea – with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. Geoffrey Bennett brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the allied navies’ vital contribution to victory.

we also Served is a social history of women’s involvement in the First world war. dr vivien newman disturbs myths and preconceptions surrounding women’s war work and seeks to inform contemporary readers of countless acts of derringdo, determination, and quiet heroism by British women, that went on behind the scenes from 1914-1918. ignoring early war office advice to ‘go home and sit still’, by 1918 hundreds of thousands of women from all corners of the world had lent their individual wills and collective strength to the allied cause. this book lets these all but forgotten women speak directly to us of their war, their lives, and their stories.

this recently discovered memoir gives an intimate glimpse into the Great war service of Beatrice hopkinson, a territorial Forces nursing Service Sister, who remained steadfastly and true to her profession as she nursed through shot and shell. this diary gives rare insight into the realities of Front Line nursing through the eyes of someone who had never anticipated working for the army but who, when her country called, willingly and steadfastly answered.

this is a new edition of this classic book which includes, in its over 700 postcards, many new, powerful propaganda images from nations on both sides of this epic conflict. all are faithfully reproduced from the original, whether in dramatic black and white or in exuberant colour and they are all at least 100 years old. But this is not just a picture book. this handsome and fascinating book uses hundreds of the immensely popular picture postcards of the ‘14-’18 period to document the course and effects of the Great war, with all its dramatis personae, its humour, suffering, patriotism, sentimentality and fervour.

the Great war was the first in our history to have a deep impact on every aspect of civilian life. in an overdue attempt to portray the real effect of the war on life at home, david Bilton examines all the major events of the period and charts their effect on everyday life for those trying to live a normal existence. extensive use is made of personal accounts and the author draws on many photographs, newspaper and magazine material and ephemera to make this very informative and atmospheric.

raleigh was Professor of english Literature at Glasgow University and chair of english Literature at oxford University. on the outbreak of the Great war he turned to the war as his primary subject. his finest book on the subject is this, the first volume of the war in the air, which was an instant publishing success. Professor Sir walter alexander raleigh has attained classic status as a result of this mighty work and this legendary volume ensures his status as a military author par excellence.

albert Ball’s individuality and his insistence on fighting alone set him apart from other fighter pilots during world war one. his invincible courage and utter determination made him a legend not only in Britain but also amongst his enemies, to whom the sight of his lone nieuport Scout brought fear. this is his story.

Alex Revell arthur rhys davids was shot down and killed in october 1917. he was just twenty and had been flying over the western Front with 56 Squadron for six months. in his brief operational career he was awarded the military cross twice and the distinguished Service order once. in the opinion of the commanding officer of his squadron he deserved the victoria cross. alex revell has written a sensitive and deeply moving biography.

Pioneer battalions, created as an expedient in 1914, were a new concept in the British army. intended to provide the royal engineers, with skilled labour and to relieve the infantry from some of its noncombatant duties, Pioneers became the work horses of the expedentiary Forces. this book traces the reasons behind the creation of these units, the work they performed and the dramatic transitions many of them had to undergo.

with the creation of the territorial Force in 1908 the battalion was re-designated as the 7th Battalion. it went to France in april 1915 with the rest of the northumbrian division seeing action almost immediately at the Second battle of ypres. in 1920 when the territorial army was reformed it was re-raised in its original role as infantry. the story concludes on 10 december 1936 when the 7th Battalion became the 47th (durham Light infantry) a.a. Battalion r.e. (t.a.), whose personnel went on to serve in the Second world war.

he tells the story of the war as the gunners themselves saw it, focusing on the first few months of warfare which were fundamental to the conduct of the campaign. the gunners may not have always shared the trench experiences of the infantry in the front line, but they were in the thick of the action, and success or failure depended on them. the personal testimonies of those who served with and supported the guns provide a vital insight into the colossal tragedy and drama of the war from the artilleryman’s point of view.

although the Brigade has received little attention since its disbandment following the war, chemical warfare in world war i has been mythologized, sentimentalized and vilified. taking a new look at the reality of poison gas warfare in world war i and the role of the Brigade, the author exposes the myths perpetuated over the years by novelists and misinformed sentimentalists and challenges prevailing views.

this book gives the history of development and innovation of concrete bunkers, pill boxes, blockhouses and general concrete constructions during the First world war. many of these structures – some showing obvious signs of war damage – still exist in France and Belgium today.all the existing structures, with photograph (except for some which are impractical, because of dense vegetation,) are shown within.

LiaiSon 1914 Edward Spears thanks to his fluent French edward Louis Spears was sent in mid august 1914 to liaise between Field marshal Sir John French and the French high command. in the weeks that followed, events moved at lightning speed and decisions were made without consulting or informing their counterparts. it fell to Spears to update the British of their ally’s moves. without modern communication this often involved Spears travelling on clogged roads between head quarters. clearly his efforts were appreciated; he was made a chevalier de la Legion d’honeur and awarded the military cross (he was wounded four times).

Edward G.D. Liveing and Sir Philip Gibbs the 1st July 1916 was the blackest day in the history of the British army when 60,000 unsuspecting men of the British 4th army advanced into the teeth of a hurricane of German fire. the vivid eyewitness account of the battle from the soldier’s point of view is provided by edward Liveing of the London regiment. also on the field that day and engaged in filming the battle for posterity was cameraman Lieut. Geoffrey malins, who produced the famous documentary film of the battle. these two contrasting accounts provide a remarkable insight into the chaotic events as they unfolded on the battlefield.

the Battle Book of ypres, originally published in 1927 and now presented again as a special centenary edition, comprises a chronological account of the fighting in the ypres Salient during the First world war, followed by a useful and unique alphabetical reference to the events in and around each hamlet, village or wood – names familiar to those who fought or followed the course of war all those years ago, names now once again lost in insignificance.

From the moment the German army moved quietly into Luxemburg on 2 august 1914, to the armistice on 11 november 1918, the fighting on the western Front in France and Flanders never stopped. there were quiet periods, just as there were the most intense, savage, huge-scale battles. this volume concludes with Field marshal Sir douglas haig’s fascinating despatch, originally published in 1919, on the execution of the fighting on the western Front.

only a week after joining the 8th durhams in april 1915 Private herbert tustin was captured at the Battle of ypres. he describes the horror of trench warfare, his treatment on being taken a Pow and the three day train journey into Germany. there followed 16 months captivity at rennbahn Pow camp with its hunger, hardships, brutality, work regime, friendships, humour and the different national characteristics of fellow Pows. this is one amazing story of war.

Personal accounts of the Great war experiences of British soldiers are well known and plentiful, but similar accounts from the German side of no man’s land are rare. this highly original book vividly describes the wartime lives and ultimate fates of ten Saxon soldiers facing the British in Flanders, revealed through their intimate diaries and correspondence. this ground-breaking work is illustrated with over 300 mostly unseen wartime photographs and other images, recording the German experience of the war in human detail and giving a rounded picture of how the Saxons lived and died in Flanders.

Gary Sheffield, Foreword by Peter Simkins

Robin Prior & Trevor Wilson

Dan Snow & Mark Pottle

Gary Sheffield is one of the most versatile and stimulating of military historians at work today. For 25 years, in a series of perceptive books and articles, he has examined the First world war from many angles – from the point of view of the politicians and the high command through to the junior officers and other ranks in the front line. morale and command presents in a single volume a range of his shorter work, and it shows his scholarship at its best.

this is a history of world war i, seen through the eyes of Sir henry rawlinson, a middle-ranking commander who frequently acted under General haig. By examining rawlinson’s role in the war, the authors are able to follow the actual events of the battlefield and show how they related to the strategies of the high command.

the never-before-published papers of General Sir thomas d--oyly Snow provide a remarkable insight into the mindset of the Great war commanders. despite being severely injured during the First Battle of the marne – when his horse fell and rolled over him, cracking his pelvis – Snow served at some of the most important battles of the western Front.

Under Lord derby’s scheme, and in response to kitchener’s famous call for a million volunteers, local communities raised (and initially often paid for) entire battalions for service on the western Front. their experience was all too frequently tragic, as men who had known each other all their lives, had worked, volunteered, a-nd trained together, and had shipped to France together, encountered the first full fury of modern battle on the Somme in July 1916. many of the Pals battalions would not long survive that first brutal baptism, but their spirit and fighting qualities have gone down into history – these were, truly, the cream of Britain’s young men, and every single one of them was a volunteer.

the Great war affected everyone. at home there were wounded soldiers in military hospitals, refugees from Belgium and later on German prisoners of war. there were food and fuel shortages and disruption to schooling. the role of women changed dramatically and they undertook a variety of work undreamed of in peacetime. meanwhile, men serving in the armed forces were scattered far and wide. in this new series, extracts from contemporary letters reveal their heroism and give insights into what it was like under battle conditions.
