ALAN BRISTOW: HELICOPTER PIONEER

ON AND OFF THE FLIGHT DECK

Alan Bristow with Patrick Malone

REFLECTIONS OF A NAVAL FIGHTER PILOT IN WORLD WAR II

Alan Bristow, founder of Bristow Helicopters, died seven days after completing his autobiography. He was a truly remarkable man; his full-page obituary was published in The Times and The Daily Telegraph. As a merchant navy officer cadet during the war Bristow survived two sinkings, played a part in the evacuation of Rangoon and was credited with shooting down two Stukas in North Africa. He joined the Fleet Air Arm and trained as one of the first British helicopter pilots, he was the first man to land a helicopter on a battleship and became Westland’s first helicopter test pilot. Out of that grew Bristow Helicopters Ltd, the largest helicopter company in the world outside America.

Henry ‘Hank’ Adlam Hank Adlam began his naval flying career in 1941, his first operational posting was to the newly-formed No. 890 Squadron. The squadron’s first operational role was to protect a convoy sailing from New York and bound for Greenock. Their major task was to protect the ship’s squadron of Fairey Swordfish anti-submarine aircraft and to destroy any long-range Lufwaffe FW Condor reconnaissance patrols that were transmitting convoy positions to the waiting Uboat wolf-packs. For the rest of the war Hank was involved with many convoy operations which saw him in numerous theatres of war.

FLEET AIR ARM CARRIER WAR Kev Darling This is the story of British naval flying from aircraft carriers, from its conception in World War One to the present day. It includes the types of aircraft and the men who flew them, the carriers and the evolution of their designs, the theatres of war in which they served and their notable achievements and tragedies. It traces navy flying from the early days of the biplane, through the rapid developments during World War Two to the post-war introduction of jet-powered flight. The British inventions of the angled flight deck and vertical landing jets revolutionised sea warfare and allowed the carrier to play a vital part in many recent land wars when naval aircraft flew in support of Allied land forces.

FIGHTING FOR THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION MEMORIES OF A SCOTTISH LEGIONNAIRE Alex Lochrie Despite not speaking French, the author joined the Foreign Legion in Paris. Once accepted, he was sent to Southern France for training and then on to Corsica to become a paratrooper. He served in former French colonies in Africa, saw action in the First Gulf War, evicting Saddam Hussein from Kuwait and in Bosnia and Sarajevo. This is a rare memoir that lifts the veil of mystery and myth from the modern Foreign Legion. The author is not given to exaggeration - there is no need for it. A gripping read.

THE KGB’S POISON FACTORY

HELMAND MISSION

Boris Volodarsky In late November 2006 the world was shaken by the ruthless assassination in London of Alexander Litvinenko. The murder was the most notorious crime committed by the Russian intelligence on foreign soil in over three decades. The author, Boris Volodarsky, who was consulted by the Metropolitan Police during the investigation and remains in close contact with Litvinenko’s widow, is a former Russian military intelligence officer and an international expert in special operations. The author proves that the Litvinenko’s poisoning is just one episode in the chain of murders that continues until the present day. Some of these assassinations or attempted assassinations are already known, others are revealed here for the first time.

1st Royal Irish Battlegroup deployed to Afghanistan’s Helmand province as part of 16 Air Assault Brigade in late spring 2008. For six months they fought the Taliban while training the nascent Afghan National Army (ANA) One company deployed with 2 PARA Battlegroup in the Sangin valley while another company was involved in heavy fighting transporting a generator for the Kajaki dam. Professionalism, high levels of trust and the unique humour of Irish soldier ensured a successful if stressful tour and accomplished their missions. Superbly illustrated, this is the stirring and inspiring story that conveys what our troops in Afghanistan are experiencing. Compelling reading.

WE HOPE TO GET WORD TOMORROW

SAGITTARIUS RISING

GHOSTS ON THE SOMME

Cecil Lewis

Alastair H. Fraser, Andrew Robertshaw and Steve Roberts

Gerard, J.L., & Christine Garvin This fascinating collection of letters traces the exchanges between a young subaltern on the front, Gerard ‘Ged’ Garvin, and his mother and father at home. Correspondence was eagerly awaited by all. Ged savoured letters home like ‘Jim Hawkins trickling the doubloons through his fingers’. Equally, his mother and father at home were always fearful that each letter they received would be the last. In a letter J. L. Garvin sent to his son on the 21 July 1916 he wrote: ‘Of course there’s no fresh letter from you and we didn’t expect it. But we hope, all the same, to get word tomorrow . . .’ Ged was killed the very next day. He was just twenty years old.

‘Classic . . . the definitive account of aerial combat – full of passion and poetry’ – Max Arthur, Independent

‘The Battle of the Somme’ is one of the most famous, and earliest, films of war ever made. The film records the most disastrous day in the history of the British army - 1 July 1916 - and it had a huge impact when it was shown in Britain during the war. Yet this book is the first in-depth study of this historic film, and it is the first to relate it to the surviving battleground of the Somme. This painstaking exercise in historical reconstruction will be compelling reading for everyone who is interested in the Great War and the Battle of the Somme.

Sent to France with the Royal Flying Corps at just seventeen, and later a member of the famous 56 Squadron, Cecil Lewis was an illustrious fighter pilot of the First World War. In this vivid and spirited account the author evocatively sets his love of the skies and flying against his bitter experience of the horrors of war as we follow his progress from France and the battlefields of the Somme, to his pioneering defence of London against deadly night time raids.

THE GREAT EDWARDIAN FIGHTING ADMIRALS OF NAVAL FEUD WORLD WAR II Richard Freemen The celebrated clash between the aristocratic and hot-headed Admiral Lord Charles Beresford and Admiral Sir John Fisher, Britain’s greatest naval reformer, makes for riveting reading. Both men wished to be First Sea Lord. When the prize went to Fisher, Beresford was determined to unseat him. He plotted attacks in Parliament, leaked state secrets and courted public opinion. No one dared act against him until he overstepped the mark victimising a rear-admiral. A Cabinet inquiry dismissed the charges against Beresford but failed to support either man. Fisher resigned and Beresford’s career was over. A definitive and authoritative account.

David Wragg Seapower was crucial to the outcome of the Second World War. The U-Boat campaign almost brought Britain to her knees; the Arctic convoys kept Russia in the War; Pearl Harbor brought America into the conflict; allied naval supremacy made the D-Day landings possible. This book examines decisive roles in the war, 15 key naval commanders of both sides. The author covers five British (Pound, Cunningham, Ramsay, Horton, Somerville) and five US admirals (King, Nimitz, Spruance, Halsey, Fletcher), three German (Raeder, Doenitz, Lutjens) three Japanese (Yamamato, Nagumo, Koga) and two French (Darlan, de la Borde). Compelling reading for Naval enthusiasts.

THE CRUEL SEA RETOLD THE TRUTH BEHIND MONSARRAT’S EPIC CONVOY DRAMA Bernard Edwards Bernard Edwards tells the factual historic story of the three convoys that Montsarrat based his famous novel on. The first two, Convoy OG 71 sailed from Liverpool for Gibraltar in August 1941 and Convoy HG 73, Gibraltar for Liverpool in September 1941, suffered terrible losses and only one U-Boat was damaged. The tables turned during December 1941 with the HG 76 convoy from Gibraltar. Commanded by Captain Walker, no less than five U-boats were sunk for the loss of seven British ships. This book is a thrilling account of naval action played out in the midAtlantic.

A CONSCRIPT IN KOREA

KOREAN ATROCITY!

Neville Williams

FORGOTTEN WAR CRIMES 1950-1953

The author, a young National Serviceman, went to Korea with the 1st Battalion The Welch Regiment as part of the Commonwealth Division. Tasked with holding a line north of the 38th Parallel, conditions were unimaginably grim due to harsh weather and enemy action. Artillery exchanges were often fierce. The Chinese were a resourceful determined enemy, never missing a chance to edge forward even if it meant serious casualties and fighting patrols clashed regularly. This graphic memoir is a no-holds-barred insight into life at the sharp end and the thoughts of an intelligent and resourceful young man unwittingly caught up in a desperate conflict.

6

Philip D Chinnery No war crime trials were held after the Korean War but, as this book reveals, there is evidence of some 1,600 atrocities and war crimes against the United Nations troops. The bulk of the victims were Americans but many British servicemen were tortured, killed or unaccounted for. Much of the carefully researched material in this thought-provoking book is horrific but the stark truth is that those North Koreans and Chinese responsible went unpunished. Many POWs were not released until two years after the end of hostilities. As the US Government insisted on a news black-out, questions are raised as to what has been done to find the missing.

MIG MENACE OVER KOREA Yuri Sutiagin and Igor Seidov, Edited and translated by Stuart Britton Nikolai Vasil'evich Sutiagin, the top-scoring Soviet air ace of the Korean War, flew his MiG-15 in lethal dogfights against American Sabres and Australian Meteors. He is credited with 22 'kills'. Yet the full story of his extraordinary achievements has never been told. Only now, with the opening of Russian archives, can an authoritative account of his wartime exploits be written. The authors use official records, the reminiscences of Sutiagin's comrades and his wife's diary to reconstruct in vivid detail the career of one of the great fighter pilots.

HE WAS MY CHIEF

THE MEMOIRS OF ADOLF HITLER’S SECRETARY Christa Schroeder As secretary to the Führer for the duration of the Third Reich, Christa Schroeder was perfectly placed to observe the actions and behaviour of Hitler, along with the most important figures surrounding him. Her memoir does not fail to deliver fascinating insights: she notes Hitler’s bourgeois manners, his vehement abstemiousness and his mood swings. She also reflects candidly on political and military developments from the earliest days of the regime through its final collapse. This is, without any doubt, one of the most important primary sources from the pre-war and wartime period.

WITH HITLER TO THE END

AT ROMMEL’S SIDE

Heinz Linge

Erwin Rommel, Hitler’s so-called ‘Desert Fox’, is possibly the most famous German Field-Marshal of WWII. He is widely regarded as the one of the most skilled commanders of desert warfare and, in contrast to other leaders of Nazi Germany, is considered to have been a chivalrous and humane officer. Rommel’s adjutant, HansJoachim Schraepler, was by his side in North Africa for ten crucial months in 1940–41 and his letters provide a unique picture of this period. Alongside his insights into the military campaign he reflects on Rommel’s character: his dynamism and tactical skill, and the ‘cult of personality’ which surrounded him.

FROM THE WOLF’S LAIR TO THE BERLIN BUNKER Heinz Linge worked with Adolf Hitler for a tenyear period from 1935 until the Führer’s death in May 1945. During this time Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler’s household and was constantly by his side. Through anecdotes and observations, Linge recounts intimate details of Hitler’s daily routine; his eating habits, his foibles, his sense of humour and his private life with Eva Braun. He also provides an eyewitness account of events leading to that fateful day in the Berlin bunker: he was one of the last to leave the bunker and was responsible for guarding the door while Hitler killed himself.

A WATERLOO HERO

NAPOLEON 1814

FIRE OVER THE ROCK

Friedrich Lindau

Andrew Uffindell

Friedrich Lindau was a remarkable soldier of the King’s German Legion. He served with distinction under Wellington from Lisbon to as far as Bayonne, and was involved in all major engagements, including Albuera, Badajoz, Salamanca and Vittoria. Most notably, he fought and was captured at La Haie Sainte. He also had a reputation as a notorious forager, looter and was said to have killed a civilian while on leave in 1814. A Waterloo Hero is the first ever translation of his diary. Lindau’s account is unique: no other private soldiers took part in so many engagements and recorded their experiences.

In 1814, after two successive years of defeat in Russia and central Europe, Napoleon was faced with the ultimate disaster - an Allied invasion of France itself. The conduct of the intense, fastmoving campaign that followed has been widely hailed as one of his greatest feats as a commander, yet it has rarely been described fully and objectively. Andrew Uffindell, in this gripping and original study, reconstructs the campaign, reassesses Napoleon's military leadership and provides a masterly account of a campaign that helped shape modern Europe.

THE GREAT SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR 1779-1783 James Falkner The great siege of Gibraltar was the longest recorded in the annals of the British army. Between 1779 and 1783 a small British force defended the Rock against the Spanish and the French who were determined to take this strategically vital point guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean. In this, the first full study of the siege for over 40 years, James Falkner draws on a wide range of contemporary sources to tell the exciting tale of a huge and complex operation.

BEST OF FRAGMENTS FROM FRANCE

CARMARTHEN PALS

THE STEEL OF THE THE BANTAMS Sidney Allinson DLI

Steven John

John Sheen

By Capt. Bruce Bairnsfather', Compiled and edited by Tonie & Valmai Holt

The Carmarthenshire Battalion was raised in 1914 as part of Kitchener’s expansion of the regular army by 500,000 men for the duration of the Great War. The first 200 recruits came from Bolton, strangely enough, but later they were mainly drawn from the County and Wales. In 1915 the Battalion, part of 38 (Welsh) Division completed training and crossed to France in December. The Battalion fought with distinction notably at Givency, Mametz Wood and in the Ypres Salient. In 1918 the Pals suffered terrible losses at Ancre and the Canal du Nord. A worthy addition to the Pals series.

2nd Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry was brought up to strength and went out to France in September 1914, where it fought at the Battle of the Aisne, before moving north to Flanders. In fact the battalion was in action immediately that war was declared in August 1914, when a detachment based at South Shields boarded a German steamer on the River Tyne. The book includes many unpublished letters and diaries of both officers and men and photographs from the Regimental Archives as well as roll sof officers and men and a list of gallantry awards.

Bruce Bairnsfather (BB) was the most famous cartoonist of WW1 and his soldier characters Old Bill, Bert and Alf, faced with sardonic good humour everything that the Germans, the mud and their officers could throw at them. The cartoons reproduced in this collection were originally drawn for The Bystander, a popular weekly magazine, in the Great War. Their effect on the public was so dramatic that Bystander sales soared. The organisation decided to publish the first 43 of his cartoons in an anthology called Fragments from France. Published to conincide with the 50th Anniversary of Bairnsfather’s death in September, and acknowledging his contribution to the war in combination with raising funds for Help for Heroes.

During WW1 the British and Canadian armies recruited over 50,000 men well below the Army's 5ft 3ins height minimum to serve as front-line soldiers. Eventually there were over 20 British ‘Bantam’ battalions and two Canadian. The author contacted over 300 survivors of the Bantams, to gather many firsthand accounts. This book describes the patriotic fervour which enabled mass recruitment and their operations. English and Scottish Bantams fought along the Somme front, while Welsh Bantams helped win the Battle of Bourlon despite hideously large casualties. Soldiers from now-forgotten Canadian units also served at Vimy Ridge and in later battles.

PEGASUS - THE HEART OF THE HARRIER Andrew Dow The conception of the Pegasus engine in 1957 upset all the conventions of aircraft design. It was previously usual for aircraft designers to seek a suitable engine, but this was an engine that sought an aircraft. The aircraft that resulted was the famous Harrier that is still in front-line service with air forces around the world including the RAF and US Marine Corps. This book takes an in-depth look at the engine’s original design concept, initial production and flight testing. It then goes on to explain how the developments and improvements have been made over the ensuing years and includes experiences of operational combat flying, both from land and sea.

SWIFT TO BATTLE: 72 FIGHTER SQUADRON RAF IN ACTION

6 GROUP BOMBER COMMAND

Tom Docherty

6 Group was born out of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), which called for the formation of 25 Canadian Squadrons in Britain. The Canadian vision was of a Canadian force operating independently alongside Bomber Command in the manner of the American 8th, but skilful negotiating by the British resulted in Canadian Bomber squadrons operating within the RAF under RAF control but funded by Canada. On the 1st of January 1943 most of the existing RCAF squadrons were brought together on stations in North Yorkshire and County Durham to form 6 Group. By the end of the war 14 squadrons were operational and one other had been posted to the Pathfinders. After an uncertain beginning the Group became an efficient and valuable contributor to Bomber Command's campaigns.

This second of three volumes traces the history of 72 Fighter Squadron during the second half of WW2. The aircraft flown, operational personnel and missions flown are fully described with firsthand accounts from pilots and both air and ground crew. Having been operational in the European theatre during the early years of World War Two, the squadron moved to North Africa in support of the Tunisian campaign and were reequipped with the updated Spitfire IX in 1942. They then assisted the Allied 8th Army as it advanced through Italy and France, being based in Malta and Sicily prior to the invasions. When the Germans surrendered they were sent to Austria. It was here that the Squadron disbanded.

THE ROMAN CONQUESTS: ITALY

NEW

Ross Cowan This first volume of an exciting new series tells how Rome went from just another Latin town under Etruscan rule to a free republic that gradually dominated all her Italian neighbours. The author describes three centuries of desperate struggles for survival against Italian neighbours and invading armies from further abroad (including that of Pyrrhus of Epirus) and the Roman army that evolved to emerge triumphant. With such formidable enemies so close to home Rome's survival, let alone her eventual greatness, was never a foregone conclusion.

THE ROMAN CONQUESTS: MACEDONIA AND GREECE

PUBLISHED NOV. NEW

Philip Matyszak This is the third in the Roman Conquests series and one of those with the most obvious appeal. While Rome was struggling for her very survival against the Carthaginians in the Second Punic War, Philip V of Macedon attempted to take advantage of their apparent vulnerability by allying with Hannibal and declaring war. Once Carthage was defeated, the Romans were free to turn their full attention to settling the score. The stage was set for the clash of two of the most successful military systems of the ancient world, the Roman legions versus the Macedonian phalanx.

CROMWELL’S WAR MACHINE THE NEW MODEL ARMY 1645-1660 Keith Roberts The New Model Army was one of the bestknown and most effective armies ever raised in England. Oliver Cromwell was both its greatest battlefield commander and the political leader whose position depended on its support. In this meticulously researched and accessible new study, Keith Roberts describes how Cromwell's army was recruited, inspired, organized, trained and equipped. He also sets its strategic and tactical operation in the context of the theory and practice of warfare in seventeenth-century Europe.

CULLODEN THE HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE LAST CLAN BATTLE Edited by Tony Pollard In the battle at Culloden Moor on 16 April 1746 the Jacobite cause was dealt a mortal blow. The power of the Highland clans was broken, and the image of sword-wielding Highlanders charging into a hail of lead delivered by the red-coated battalions of the Hanoverian army has passed into legend. Yet our perception of this critical episode tends to be confused by mistaken, sometimes partisan views of the events on the battlefield. So, what really happened at Culloden? In this fascinating and original book, a team of leading historians and archaeologists reconsiders every aspect of the battle.

CAVALIER AND ROUNDHEAD SPIES INTELLIGENCE IN THE CIVIL WAR AND COMMONWEALTH Julian Whitehead The crucial part played by intelligence and espionage techniques - by spying – in Britain during the Civil Wars and the Commonwealth has rarely been studied, yet it is a key to understanding the dangerous politics and the open warfare of those troubled times. In this fascinating and original account, Julian Whitehead traces the rapid development of intelligence techniques during this, one of the most confused and uncertain phases of British history.

LOST SOULS OF THE RIVER KWAI

ESCAPE TO FREEDOM

EXPERIENCES OF A

The Author was shot down in his Wellington bomber on his third operational mission. Captured shortly after he was interrogated in Dulag Luft before being sent to Stalag Luft 1 on the Baltic where he stayed from April to September 1944. As the noose tightened on Germany, Tony and his fellow kriegies were kept on the move. He describes the increasingly harsh conditions they all endured, including the infamous Long March of the winter of 1945. He twice escaped, the second time successfully reaching the Allied Second Army.

BRITISH SOLDIER ON THE RAILWAY OF DEATH Bill Read with Mitch Peeke This is the moving story of a young man who found himself along with thousands of his comrades in the nightmare of Japanese captivity. Unlike so many (it is said that one Commonwealth POW died for every sleeper laid) Bill lived to tell the tale. Indeed it is remarkable that this story has not been told before, so graphic are Bill's memories of the hardships and horrors as well as the courage and companionship. The book goes on to describe how the experiences of those years have affected his life since.

CHURCHILL’S DESERT RATS IN NORTH AFRICA AND ITALY

THE BRITISH ARMY IN FRANCE AFTER DUNKIRK

OPERATION BLUECOAT

Patrick Delaforce, Foreword by Major General Patrick Cadingley

Patrick Takle

The latest in the acclaimed Over The Battlefield series this superbly illustrated book describes the attempted breakout from the Normandy bridgehead by Dempsey’s 2nd Army in July 1944. Using many previously unseen air photographs the main narrative of this book spans the initial break-out by the British XXX Corps and VIII Corps from Caumont the armoured battles and desperate German counter-attacks of 4 – 6 August, the German defence of Estry and their withdrawal from Normandy. The book also examines Monty’s refusal to seize Vire, the disputed Anglo-American border and the BLUECOAT’s impact on the German Mortain offensive.

This superbly researched book covers the early campaigns and battles that earned The Desert Rats their name and fame. It was at El Alamein that 7 Armoured Division and Montgomery’s Eighth Army turned the tide. The successful completion of the North African campaign led to the invasion of Sicily and the long slog up Italy. The Desert Rats were at the forefront of these campaigns. Many famous names were associated with the Division, such as Field Marshal Lord Carver and Major General Pip Roberts. This fine book is enhanced by many first hand contributions.

After the Dunkirk evacuation, many thousands of British troops remained in France. Churchill, desperate to keep the French in the War, decided to form a second BEF of these, reinforced by a second Corps commanded by General Alan Brooke. He also ordered scarce RAF fighter squadrons to France. Had these been lost the Battle of Britain might have had a very different result. Realising the hopelessness of his mission Brooke delayed for as long as possible. This is the fascinating story of a disaster that could have been so much worse had Churchill had his way.

THE DEVIL’S ADJUTANT

MEN OF STEEL

STEEL INFERNO

JOCHEN PEIPER, PANZER LEADER

THE ARDENNES AND EASTERN FRONT 1944-45

I PANZER CORPS IN NORMANDY

Major General Michael Reynolds CB

Steel Inferno provides a unique insight into the experiences of 1st SS Panzer Corps, one of only two units in the German Army which bore Hitler’s name. Though the Allies could never forget or forgive the attrocities the Wehrmacht and SS troops commited, many admired the Panzer Corps, and one compared fighting with them to ‘fighting with tigers’.

Major General Michael Reynolds CB Much has been written about Jochen Peiper, though it is unlikely he would have been heard of outside Germany but for the infamous massacre near Malmedy, Belgium. Peiper is now revered and generally accepted as a brilliant solider. This meticulously researched book explores Peiper’s youth, his career with the SS, the now famous trial of the officers and soldiers of the Leibstandarte.

Aware of the need to create more divisions for his army and under constant pressure from Heinrich Himmler for more troops, Adolf Hitler chose this moment to order the formation of a new SS Panzer corps. This meticulously researched book documents the actions of the Corps throughout the last offensives of the war.

SHAN HACKETT

THE AIRBORNE BATTLE

GLIDER PILOTS AT ARNHEM

Martin Middlebrook

Major M L Peters & Luuk Buist

Roy Fullick

The Battle of Arnhem was a rare losing gamble by Montgomery, involving the bold use of three airborne divisions to capture crossings of the three major rivers between the advancing Allies and the plains of northern Germany. Using the technique he has perfected over twenty-five years of military study, blending meticulous research based on original documents with the personal experiences of more than 500 participants, Martin Middlebrook describes the Battle of Arnhem from start to finish, from one end of that complicated battlefield to the other. This is a masterly summary, by a superb historian, of a glorious defeat.

This book describes the role played in the battle of Arnhem by the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR). The GPR were predominantly SNCOs trained to fly the assault gliders. From the moment they landed on Dutch soil they were involved in the fierce fighting around the shrinking perimeter. Eventually the GPR survivors marked the escape route across the Rhine for the battered remnants of 1st Airborne Division. In so doing they suffered extensive losses from which the Regiment never fully recovered. This book tells their story in the words of the men themselves.

'Shan' Hackett is remembered by his own and succeeding generations for a variety of achievements and attributes. A superb fighting soldier, he served with the Trans-Jordan Force, had fought through North Africa and was involved in the formation of the Long Range Desert Group, the SAS and Popski's Private Army. He went on to raise 4th Parachute Brigade which he commanded with flair at Arnhem where he was wounded and captured. He escaped and got back to British lines. He rose to high rank filling key command and staff appointments in the British Army and NATO. This is his story.

SECOND YPRES 1915

MACHINE-GUNS AND THE GREAT WAR

THE GAS ATTACK

TANK ACTION IN THE GREAT WAR

John Lee

B BATTALIONS EXPERIENCES 1917

Paul Cornish

Ian Verrinder

The machine-gun is one of the iconic weapons of the Great War – indeed of the twentieth century. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. During a four-year war that generated unprecedented casualties, the machine-gun stood out as a key weapon. In the process it took on an almost legendary status that persists to the present day. Paul Cornish, in this authoritative and carefully considered study, reconsiders the history of automatic firepower, and he describes in vivid detail its development during the First World War.

The mist of poisonous gas that drifted across no man's land from the German trenches opposite the Ypres salient on 22 April 1915 caused ghastly casualties and suffering among the unprepared defenders, and it opened up a huge seven-mile gap in the defensive line. It also signalled the beginning of a new and frightful era of industrialized warfare. John Lee's graphic and perceptive reassessment of this milestone in the history of the Great War is one of the few fulllength studies of the event to have been published in recent times.

Harry Moon served on the Somme with the Royal Sussex before transferring to B Battalion Machine Gun Corps in January 1917, (later the Tank Corps) to serve in MK IV Tanks. His first tank action was at Messines and the 3rd Battle of Ypres followed in July 1917. After descriptions of fascines and wire clearing equipment trials he gives a thrilling account of the mass use of armour at Cambrai. Disaster was to follow at the attack on FontaineNotre-Dame on 23 November where there were 70% casualties. A very rare Great War tank memoir with many previously unseen photos.

THE ART OF LEADERSHIP

VICTORIA’S GENERALS

Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery of Alamein

Edited by Steven J Corvi and Ian F.W.Beckett The senior British generals of the Victorian era - men like Wolseley, Roberts, Gordon and Kitchener were heroes of their time. As soldiers, administrators and battlefield commanders they represented the empire at the height of its power. But they were a disparate, sometimes fractious group of men. They exhibited many of the failings as well as the strengths of the British army of the late nineteenth-century. And now, when the Victorian period is being looked at more critically than before, the moment is right to reassess them as individuals and as soldiers.

Few people over the last century are better qualified to discuss leadership than Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. He does this through case studies that include political (for example Cromwell, de Gaulle and Mao), military (Haig and Wavell) and industrial figures such as Nuffield. In his inimitable way Monty analyses their leadership qualities and it should come as no surprise that he does not hesitate to highlight perceived deficiencies! First published as The Path to Leadership in 1961, this edition contains an additional and contentious comparison of Churchill and Eisenhower. The current Viscount’s Foreword explains the fascinating story behind this piece.

CHURCHILL AND THE NORWAY CAMPAIGN Graham Rhys-Jones On 9 April 1940, the German Armed Forces seized Norway and Denmark in an operation remarkable for its precision and boldness. The Chamberlain War Cabinet was caught on the hop and responded with ineptitude. While this book examines the making of grand strategy it is first and foremost the story of this ill-fated campaign. It describes the attempts of naval and military commanders to respond to daily shifts in government policy and to grasp the methods of a new kind of enemy, one which seemed willing to take extraordinary risks and which had regained a level of tactical mobility not seen since Napoleonic times.

BRITISH MILITARY MEDALS A GUIDE FOR THE COLLECTOR AND FAMILY HISTORIAN Peter Duckers British Military Medals traces the history of medals and gallantry awards from Elizabethan times to the modern day and it features an expert account of their design and production. Campaign and gallantry medals are a key to understanding and exploring - British and Imperial military history, and to uncovering the careers and exploits of individual soldiers. For over 200 years these awards have marked the wars, campaigns and battles fought by British and Imperial forces across the world.

BUSINESS IN GREAT WATERS

THE U-BOAT WARS OF 1916-1945 John Terraine In this study of submarine warfare, the author explains why Winston Churchill wrote "the only thing that ever frightened me during the war was the U-Boat peril". Until it had been overcome, the Anglo-American entry into Europe in 1944 would have been impossible. John Terraine concentrates on the combatants themselves, both German and Allied, but does not overlook the three main factors in the equation - the political, the military and the technological, as well as the intelligence, the weapons and the devices both sides employed in order to outwit each other. He also focuses on the fighting men on either side, seeing the action from "where it was at".

THE BATTLE OF NORTH CAPE Angus Konstam On 25 December 1943 the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst slipped out of Altenfjord in Norway to attack Artic convoy JW55B which was carrying vital war supplies to the Soviet Union. But British naval intelligence knew of the Scharnhorst's mission before she sailed and the vulnerable convoy was protected by a large Royal Naval force including the battleship Duke of York. In effect the Scharnhorst was sailing into a trap. One of the most compelling naval dramas of the Second World War had begun. ...A fast read with suprising twists and turns’. Casematepublishing.com

CAPTAIN OATES SOLDIER AND EXPLORER

GUNTHER PLÜSCHOW

Sue Limb and Patrick Cordingley

Anton Rippon

'I am just going outside and may be some time.' With these words, on 17 March 1912, Captain Oates walked out to his death in an Antarctic blizzard and won a place for himself in history as 'a very gallant gentleman'. Yet, as Sue Limb and Patrick Cordingley reveal in this new edition of their classic biography of the man, there is much more to Captain Oates’s life than his final famous act of self-sacrifice. Their work is, as Sir Ranulph Fiennes noted, a ‘fascinating character study of a quintessential British hero'

Gunther Plüschow of the German Imperial Navy holds a unique place in history - during the First World War he was the only German prisoner of war ever to escape from the British mainland and make it all the way back to the Fatherland. Yet, although his daring break for freedom in 1915 is astonishing in its own right, Plüschow was much more than simply an escaped POW. He was also a fearless aviator who flew against the British and Japanese in the Far East, and he was an explorer. In Gunther Plüschow: Airman, Escaper, Explorer, Anton Rippon tells this extraordinary tale in vivid detail.

MONS, ANZAC AND KUT AN MP (LT COLONEL THE HON AUBREY HERBERT MP) Edited by Edward Melotte Already a diplomat and MP, Aubrey Herbert’s eye-sight excluded him from military service in 1914 but he attached himself unofficially to the Irish Guards and became an honorary Lieutenant. Wounded and briefly captured in the Retreat from Mons, he went on to Egypt before landing at Gallipoli, where he personally arranged a temporary humanitarian truce. Later in Iraq, his efforts to buy the release of the beleaguered British garrison at Kut failed. This acclaimed memoir, originally published anonymously, describes his experiences, the characters he came across and benefits from a full Introduction and additional entries.

THE SIEGE OF KÜSTRIN 1945: Gateway to Berlin

HITLER'S PANZER ARMIES ON THE EASTERN FRONT

HITLER’S DEFEAT ON THE EASTERN FRONT Ian Baxter

Tony Le Tissier

Robert Kirchubel

Drawing on rare and previously unpublished photographs accompanied by in-depth captions, the book reveals how the battle of Kursk was the beginning of the end and how this led to the Red Army recapturing huge areas of the Soviet Union and bleeding white the German armies it struck. As the Red Army launched its long awaited summer offensive on June 1944, German forces were forced to withdraw under the constant hammer blows of ground and aerial bombardments the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, with diminishing resources, withdrew across a devastated Reich and fought out their last battle around a devastated Berlin.

The unexpected arrival of Soviet troops at the end of January 1945 at the ancient fortress and garrison town of Küstrin came as a tremendous shock to the German High Command - the Soviets were now only 50 miles from Berlin itself. The Red Army needed the vital road and rail bridges passing through Küstrin for their forthcoming assault on the capital, but flooding and their own high command's strategic blunders resulted in a sixty-day siege by two Soviet armies which totally destroyed the town. Tony Le Tissier, in this graphic and painstakingly researched account, has recorded events in extraordinary detail.

Hitler's panzer armies spearheaded the blitzkrieg on the Eastern Front. They played a key role in every major campaign, not simply as tactical tools but also as operational weapons that shaped strategy. Yet no previous study has concentrated on the history of these elite formations in the bitter struggle against the Soviet Union. Robert Kirchubel's absorbing and meticulously researched account of the operational history of the panzer armies fills this gap in the literature.

PRIVATE BEATSON’S WAR LIFE, DEATH AND HOPE ON THE WESTERN FRONT Edited by Shaun Springer and Stuart Humphreys Until recently James Beatson was one of the millions of forgotten soldiers of the Great War. But after 90 years his diary has been rediscovered, perfectly preserved, and his story can now be told. It is a moving, intensely personal and beautifully written narrative by an extraordinary young man who witnessed one of the darkest episodes in European history.

FAMOUS Richard Van Emden and Vic Piuk Famous tells the Great War stories of twenty of Britain's most respected, best known and even notorious celebrities. They include politicians, actors, writers, an explorer, a sculptor and even a murderer. Many would become household names. The authors have discovered the exact locations where these celebrities saw action. They tell the story of how J.R.R Tolkein led his men over the top on the Somme, where C.S Lewis was wounded and invalided home, and how Basil Rathbone won the Military Cross for a trench raid (while dressed as a tree). Each story is examined in detail with pictures taken of the very spot where the actions took place. There are maps of the area that will guide enterprising readers to walk in the footsteps of their heroes.

LAST STAND AT LE PARADIS Richard Lane 2nd Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment with the BEF saw the first actions of World War Two and won the first gallantry awards. They also suffered the first British officer fatality in action. In May overwhelmed by the German offensive elements of the Battalion were surrounded at Le Paradis. After surrendering, ninety-nine men of the Battalion were marched to a paddock where their SS captors massacred them in cold blood. Miraculously, there were two survivors who helped bring the culprits to justice after the war. This is the story of the events that led to this atrocity. ‘A well-written and informative book’. PRISONER OF THE RISING SUN Stanley Wort In this moving account the author describes his part in the Battle for Hong Kong and his capture. In due course he was shipped to Japan in a Japanese ‘hell-ship’. In Japan he and his fellow POWs were used as slave labour. Treatment was brutal and, although many died, the their spirit was never broken. He experienced a major earthquake and was on the receiving end of a B29 fire raid. In August 1945 he witnessed the Japanese listening to their Emperor announce the surrender. This highly readable and compelling memoir contains a tribute to his American liberators.

THE DEVIL’S WORKSHOP A MEMOIR OF THE NAZI COUNTERFEITING OPERATION Adolf Burger One of the most remarkable episodes of WWII was the Nazi attempt to forge currency and trigger the economic collapse of the Allies. In this extraordinary memoir, the sole surviving Czech counterfeiter Adolf Burger describes his wartime experiences as an inmate of several concentration camps and reveals how, under unthinkable circumstances, he became part of the largest counterfeiting operation the world has ever seen. Supported by hitherto unseen documentation and photographs, this is a shocking account which sheds fresh light on the calculated barbarity of the Nazi war machine. The book served as the basis of the award-winning film The Counterfeiters.

PRISONERS OF THE KAISER

THE LAST POW’S OF THE GREAT WAR Richard Van Emden Over 170,000 British Soldiers were taken prisoner by the Germans during the Great War. Prisoners of the Kaiser is the first book to comprehensively examine the plight of those captured. The veterans talk openly about their experiences, giving us a powerful insight into life behind barbed wire over ninety years ago. Their stories are perceptive, often heart-rending, sometimes funny, and certainly poignant. Their words are complemented with a truly remarkable collection of documents, illustrations and photographs.

THE GREAT BOER WAR Byron Farwell The Great Boer War was one of the last romantic wars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer people fighting to establish the independence of their tiny nation against the British Empire at its peak of power and self-confidence. It was fought in the barren vastness of the South African veldt, and it produced in almost equal measure extraordinary feats of personal heroism, unbelievable examples of folly and stupidity, and many incidents of humour and tragedy. The Great Boer War is a definitive history of a dramatic conflict by a master story teller and historian.

QUEEN VICTORIA’S LITTLE WARS

A CAVALRYMAN IN THE CRIMEA

Byron Farwell

Philip Warner

This is the story of what Rudyard Kipling called ‘the savage wars of peace’. Throughout Queen Victoria’s long reign there was not a single year in which, somewhere in the world, British soldiers were not fighting for her and her Empire. It tells the fascinating story of the little known and extraordinary small wars, and of the men who fought them. But, engrossing as these small wars are – and they bristle with bizarre, tragic and humorous incident – it is the officers and men who fought them that dominate the book.

Richard Temple Godman, a young officer in the 5th Dragoon Guards, wrote letters to his family throughout the Crimea campaign. He took part in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade and in numerous other engagements, yet brought his three horses back unscathed. Godman’s dispatches range from the pleasures of smoking Turkish tobacco and hunting wild dogs, to the pain of seeing friends and horses die from battle and disease. He writes scathingly about rivalries between the Generals, inaccurate newspaper reports and medical inefficiency. His letters provide an unrivalled picture of what it was really like to be in the Crimea.

GENTLEMEN IN KHAKI AND CAMOUFLAGE Major General John Strawson The British Army has seldom not been on active service during the 20th and early 21st centuries. General Strawson has updated his well reviewed Gentlemen in Khaki to include its involvement in Iraq, Sierra Leone, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Recognising that it is their courage, commitment, skill and perseverance he concentrates on the commanders and Tommies. At the same time, rather than describing battles in detail, the author focuses on issues as the army’s size and structure, its lack of Government support and appropriate equipment. He pulls no punches and this is a thought-provoking and informed book.

JAPAN’S GESTAPO

POLAND BETRAYED

‘THE KEMPEITAI REIGN OF TERROR’

‘THE NAZI-SOVIET INVASIONS OF 1939’

Mark Felton The Kempetai exercised virtually unlimited power throughout the Japanese Empire. The author reveals their criminal and collaborationist networks. They ran the brutal POW gulag system, slave labour, including 'Comfort Women' drawn from all races. Their record of reprisals against military and civilians amounted to genocide on a grand scale. Of particular distaste are revelations of ‘Maruta’ vivisection and biological and chemical experiments on live subjects. The author’s disturbing text contains survivors’ first hand testimonies about this most evil organization. He examines how the guilty were bought to justice and the resulting claims for compensation. Not for the faint hearted.

David G. Williamson Hitler's attack on Poland in 1939 was the first brutal act in six years of world war, but the campaign is often overshadowed by the momentous struggle that followed across the rest of Europe. David Williamson, in this timely and thought-provoking study, reconstructs each stage of the battle in graphic detail. He looks at the precarious situation of the Polish nation caught between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, reconsiders the pre-war policies of the other European powers, particularly France and Britain, and assesses the state of the opposing armed forces before the Germans launched Operation White.

AUSCHWITZ DEATH CAMP

STALINGRAD VICTORY ON THE VOLGA

THE CRUSHING OF POLAND

Ian Baxter

Nik Cornish

Ian Baxter

The concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau was the site of the single largest mass murder in history. Over one million mainly Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in its gas chambers and countless more from disease and starvation. Auschwitz Death Camp is a chilling pictorial record of this infamous establishment. Using some 250 photographs together with detailed captions and accompanying text, it describes how people lived, worked and died at Auschwitz. The book covers the men who conceived and constructed this killing machine, and how the camp provided a vast labour pool for various industrial complexes erected in the vicinity.

The Soviet victory over the Germans at Stalingrad was decisive for the war on the Eastern Front and for the Second World War as a whole, and the story of the long, bitter battle on the banks of the Volga has fascinated historians ever since. While it has been the subject of countless histories, memoirs and eyewitness accounts, the gruelling reality of the battle on the ground, in the shattered streets and buildings of the city, has rarely been recorded photographically. And this is the great strength of Nik Cornish's selection of unforgettable images, in this fine Images of War edition.

Hitler’s invasion of Poland in August 1939 was the first demonstration of Blitzkrieg tactics – the ruthless use of armour, mobile infantry and air support. The brave but inferior Polish army was overwhelmed by this awesome display of military power. Official German photographers accompanied the triumphant Nazi forces on their victorious advance which first seized the key part of Danzig and then Warsaw, all within one month. The Crushing of Poland captures the drama and raw aggression of the Campaign in photographs and full captions. ‘If early WW2 history interests you then you’ll like this inexpensive reference source’. ESCAPE, EVASION AND REVENGE Marc H Stevens Peter Stevens was a German-Jewish refugee who escaped Nazi persecution as a teenager in 1933. He joined the RAF in 1939 and after eighteen months of pilot training he started flying bombing missions against his own country. He completed twenty-two missions before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Nazis in September 1941. To escape became his raison d'être and his great advantage was that he was in his native country. He was recaptured after each of his several escapes, but the Nazis never realised his true identity. This is the story of a heavily conflicted young man, alone in a world that is in the midst of destruction. It is at once a sad yet uplifting tale of thankless and unheralded heroism.

THE FORGOTTEN FEW THE POLISH AIR FORCE IN WORLD WAR II Adam Zamoyski By the beginning of 1941 there was a fully fledged Polish Air Force operating alongside the RAF. With 14 Squadrons it was larger than any other of the Air Forces from Nazi-occupied Europe. Over 17,000 men and women passed through the ranks of the Polish Air Force while it was stationed in the UK. They shot down 745 enemy aircraft, with a further 175 unconfirmed. They dropped thousands of bombs and laid hundreds of mines, flying 102,486 sorties and notching up a total of 290, 895 operational flying hours. They achieved this at a cost of 1,973 killed and 1,388 wounded. They won 342 British gallantry awards.

FROM DOGFIGHT TO DIPLOMACY Author Donald MacDonell, Editors Lois MacDonell and Anne Mackay MacDonell's service career began in the 1930s. Shortly before the war he became a Squadron Leader and worked at the Air Ministry during the Phoney War. When hostilities commenced he became CO of No 64 Squadron. Awarded a DFC, he was given command of a squadron at Leconfield to train urgently required pilots. Eventually he was shot down over the English Channel and rescued by a U-boat, this resulted in a lengthy period as a PoW in camps throughout enemy occupied Europe and Germany. During this period he was involved with the famous 'Wooden Horse' escape and was eventually freed by advancing Russian troops.

OPERATION DRAGOON THE INVASION OF SOUTHERN FRANCE 1944 Anthony Tucker-Jones Operation DRAGOON, the Allied landings in the south of France in August 1944, is often seen as a sideshow supporting Operation OVERLORD, the crucial D-Day landings in Normandy. And often the operation is criticized as an expensive diversion of men and equipment from the struggle against the German armies in Italy. Yet, as Anthony Tucker-Jones shows in his new indepth study, Dragoon and the subsequent Allied advance across southern France were key stages in the liberation of Europe, and the operation had far-reaching political and military ramifications.

THE BATTLE FOR BURMA THE PEGASUS AND Roy Conyers Nesbit ORNE BRIDGES The struggle of British, Commonwealth and American-Chinese troops against the Japanese in Burma was one of the decisive campaigns of the Second World War. British India was threatened by the Japanese advance, the fate of the British Empire in the East hung in the balance. The tropical climate – dense malarial jungle infested with vermin and swept by monsoon rains – made the fighting, for both sides, a remarkable feat of arms. Yet the war in Burma rarely receives the attention it deserves. Roy C. Nesbit, in this highly illustrated account, traces the entire course of the campaign.

Neil Barber The glider-borne operation to capture Pegasus Bridge has an established place in the annals of warfare. It was a superbly daring, brilliantly executed ‘coup de main’ assault. Equally brave was the seizure of the Orne bridges by airborne forces and the defence against ferocious German counter attacks over a prolonged period. The author uses extensive personal accounts to cover events and operations from Ranville in the East to Benouville in the West and the fierce fighting by 7th, 12th and 13th Parachute Battalions and the Commandos and the Warwicks. Ideal as a tour companion or straight read.

THE GREAT GERMAN ESCAPE

SAS OPERATION BULBASKET

REPORT ON EXPERIENCE

UPRISING OF HITLER’S NAZIS IN BRITAIN’S POW CAMPS

Paul McCue

Report on Experience is an incisive and compelling memoir, written by a quietly heroic author. This brilliantly-written work provides an insight not just into the mind of the author, but the prevailing attitudes of wartime Britain and Europe. In simple but effective prose, Mulgan traces the Allies’ path to World War II and the widespread reluctance of the population to accept the reality of hostilities. Throughout, this is not just a factual account but a story told poetically with spirit and insight. This new edition of the work has an introduction by the acclaimed SOE historian Professor M R D Foot, together with a foreword by John Mulgan’s son Richard.

Charles Whiting Throughout the Second World War there had been a potentially lethal Trojan horse inside Britain; from Comrie in Northern Scotland, down to Devizes in Wiltshire, in every city, in every race course of any note, in every football ground, were German POWs. Nearly a quarter of a million of them in fact; fit, virile young men, and a goodly number of them fanatical National Socialists. Now what would these young men do if they were armed and given a plan which transcended merely escaping? This is the gripping story of their abortive mass escape plan and the covert operations that went with it.

P E N & S WO R D M I L I TA RY H I S TO RY 2 0 0 9

On D-Day 6 June, 1944, a team of 55 SAS were dropped by parachute in enemy-occupied France with the task of disrupting the movement of German reinforcements north against the Allied invasion of Normandy. Using hitherto classified documents the author tells the full story of Operation BULBASKET. He traced the surviving main participants and, from their various but often contradictory accounts and much careful detective work, has managed to piece together what really happened in those dramatic eight weeks. This has to be one of the most remarkable and controversial stories written about the Second World War.

BRITISH DESTROYERS Norman Friedman Written by America’s leading authority, this is an objective but sympathetic view of the difficult economic and political environment in which British designers had to work, and benefits from the author’s ability to compare and contrast the US Navy’s experience. Norman Friedman is renowned for his ability to explain the policy and strategy changes that drive design decisions, and his latest book uses previously unpublished material to draw a new and convincing picture of British naval policy over the previous seventy years and more. Hugely successful with enthusiasts and professionals alike from its first publication in 2006, this is the book’s third edition.

ASSAULT LANDING CRAFT

THE BATTLE OF THE NARROW SEAS

Brian Lavery

Sir Peter Scott

The landing craft assault, or LCA, was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its early development, and describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. Finally, it describes the part it played in the many operations in which it took part.

This is the story of the struggle for the control of the narrow seas of the Channel and the southern North Sea during the Second World War, told by Sir Peter Scott who, as a MTB commander, saw action against the enemy throughout the course of the War. This book is much more than a memoir and tells the whole story of the wideranging conflict against the Germans, fought in the congested waters of the Channel. Actions against convoys and E-boats, often under the shadows of French cliffs, the attack on St Nazaire, and the defensive and offensive roles taken on by MTBs during the D-Day landings are just some of the events covered in the book.

FOREIGN PLANES IN THE LAST DAYS OF THE SERVICE OF THE LUFTWAFFE Manfred Griehl LUFTWAFFE

LEGEND OF THE LANCASTERS

Jean-Louis Roba No airforce in the Second World War would make more use of captured planes than the Luftwaffe. With this in mind, Jean-Louis Roba has undergone a considerable amount of work in tracking down hundreds of aircraft used by the Luftwaffe and illustrating their uses, careers and eventual fates. More than just an account of the Luftwaffe’s use of captured aircraft, the book debunks myths about how prepared the Germans were for war in 1939, and shows how important even such an unreliable source of supplies as captured planes would become to the Luftwaffe. Translated into English for the first time, Roba’s investigative work gives a rare opportunity to see British and American planes repainted in German colours and symbols.

This book is a riveting account told in ten big chapters of the young RAF crews who flew Lancasters in RAF Bomber Command from 1942 to the end of the war in Europe. It is unique in that the story is told using first person accounts from RAF aircrew and German night fighter crews who fought each other during raids on occupied Europe and Germany from 1942 onwards. There is reaction too from German civilians who survived amongst the rubble, carnage and fire in the towns and cities of the ThirdReich as Bomber Command sought to destroy the enemy’s will to wage war.

P E N & S WO R D M I L I TA RY H I S TO RY 2 0 0 9

The end of WWII was a remarkable period in military and aviation history. The eclipse of the piston-engine, the introduction of electronic detection equipment, rockets and airborne weapons in previously unknown quantities changed the face of the air war and paved the way for post-war developments in aviation technology. Many details of this crucial phase of the war remained hidden for years in top-secret files, but in this fascinating new history Manfred Griehl makes use of recently declassified sources, alongside his own vast collection of photographs, to provide a fresh look at the story of the Luftwaffe.

THE BATTLE OF LOOS

THE GERMANS ON THE SOMME

Philip Warner

David Bilton

Loos is a small mining town in northern France. But in September 1915, it was the centre of one of the most intense and bloody battles of the First World War with 60,000 casualties. The intended breakthrough was not achieved although some 8,000 yards of enemy trench were captured. Yet if the initial gains had been exploited the course of the war might have been different. The author has gathered many survivors’ accounts and diaries, including that of Sir John French, and through their words reveals a truly horrific tale lightened by the heroism of the participants.

This highly illustrated book covers the activities of the German Army on the River Somme during The Great War including the initial fighting in 1914 prior to the arrival of the British Army. The 1916 Allied Offensive resulted in the German withdrawal but only at a terrible cost to both sides. There is a wealth of splendid, fully captioned photographs, authoritative general text and a useful chronological order of events. What makes this splendid book so different is the author's successful attempt to view events through German eyes.

THE GERMAN ARMY AT CAMBRAI

SHOT IN THE TOWER

Jack Sheldon

The first reaction to Leonard Sellers fascinating account of the spies who were executed in the Tower of London during the First World War is likely to be one of amazement at their ineptitude. Not one of them seems to have had any proper training or any idea of how to set about the job. This, of course raises the intriguing question: how many others were there who did know what they were up to and managed to escape detection? Whether they deserved their fate, or indeed the niche in history which this book gives them, is for the reader to decide. What cannot be denied is that their collected histories make remarkable reading.

Jack Sheldon’s latest book in his acclaimed ‘German Army’ series concentrates on German aspects of the bitter battle of Cambrai November/December 1917. Making full use of primary source material he first covers the defensive battle 20 – 29 November followed by the counter-attack which saw the German Army regain not only most of the ground lost and more besides. Many other battles are described in detail and the experiences of the fighting man will be of most interest to many.

DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH WARSHIPS 18601906: A PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD Nicholas J Dingle Illustrated with almost 200 official admiralty photographs, many previously unpublished, this book traces the development of Royal Naval ship design through a period of immense change. These years saw the gradual transition from sails to steam and screw propulsion; from wood to steel construction; from fixed broadside armaments of bronze muzzle-loaders to turret-mounted steel breech-loaders and torpedoes. The period closes with the launch of HMS Dreadnought, which overnight rendered all existing ships obsolete.

It combines the standing features of regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. Intended to make interesting reading as well as providing authoritative reference, there is a strong visual emphasis, including specially commissioned drawings and the most recently released photographs and artists’ impressions. For anyone with an interest in contemporary naval affairs, whether an enthusiast or a defence professional, this annual is set to become required reading.

BRITISH WARSHIPS IN THE AGE OF SAIL 1603 - 1714 Rif Winfield The seventeenth century saw the transformation of Britain from a minor state on the fringes of Europe into a global economic power, whose interests were protected and promoted by the largest navy in the world. The character of this navy was forged by a bloody civil war, three fiercely disputed conflicts with the Dutch, and the first of many wars with the French. With its unique depth of information, this is a work of the utmost importance to every naval historian and general reader interested in the navy of the sailing era.

THE STORY OF HMS REVENGE

CARRIER OPERATIONS IN WORLD WAR II

Alexander Stilwell

David Brown

Between Drake’s Revenge and the Polaris submarine, the most recent Revenge, are glorious years of the Royal Navy. Revenge was at the Armada, the Azores, Trafalgar and Jutland and today works menacingly in the depths with weapons capable of terrible destruction. Other Revenges included the 25,000 ton battleship with eight 15 inch guns The first Revenge would have comfortably fitted across its beam. More than about the ships themselves, this book describes the commanders and crews, captures the flavour of life on board and the actions in which they were involved.

Between 1939 and 1945 the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm grew from a small force into a powerful strategic weapon, and David Brown here describes their activities in the Home, Mediterranean, Eastern and British Pacific Fleets, together with Forces created for specific operations; he then describes carrier operations in the Pacific between 1941 and 1945, the greatest maritime war in history. This new work contains material from two published volumes, and from a third which remained unpublished at his death; it now provides the most detailed single-volume account currently available of British, American and Japanese carrier operations in World War II.

THE FOURTH FORCE Geoff Puddefoot Set up in August 1905, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary was originally a logistic support organization, part of the Navy proper but run on civilian lines, comprising a miscellaneous and very unglamorous collection of colliers, store ships and harbour craft. Just over a century later it has evolved beyond recognition: its ships compare in size, cost and sophistication with all but the largest warships, and the RFA itself has developed into an essential arm of all three Services. This book charts the veritable revolution that has overtaken the RFA since the end of the Second World War. New technology and techniques reflect the rapid growth in the importance of logistics in modern warfare, while the broadening role of the RFA is to be seen in the history of its operations, many of them little known to the public.

LAND GIRLS AND THEIR IMPACT

THE HISTORY OF 30 ASSAULT UNIT

Ann Kramer

Craig Cabell

The impact of the land girls cannot be ignored. It was not just that women were working and farms had more women than men, women who were not part of the family or, for some of them, had even lived in the countryside before – but women were wearing trousers and filling in for men, some of whom would never return from war. For the women, their time as land girls changed their lives and how they viewed their own role in society and the family. Using original interviews and photographs from some of these land girls, historian Ann Kramer delves deeper than any previous study to understand the role of the land girls both during and after the Second World War.

Of the many WW2 special forces units such as SAS, SBS, Phantom and Commandos, 30 Assault Unit remains the most secretive and exclusive. Formed by Ian Fleming, 30 AU’s mission was to penetrate and operate behind enemy lines, capture by whatever means necessary vital intelligence and feed it back to London where it could be assimilated and acted upon. 30 AU included mavericks such as Patrick Dalzel-Job (the model for Fleming’s James Bond). The author has trawled archives and interviewed veterans to piece together the history of this elusive special forces unit which achieved results disproportionate to their size.

HITLER’S GULF WAR

DIARY OF A BOMB AIMER TARGET LEIPZIG

Barrie G. James

Campbell Muirhead Edited and annotated by Philip Swan

During the spring of 1941, on an isolated, indefensible airfield 55 miles from Baghdad a group of poorly armed and outnumbered RAF airman equipped with obsolete aircraft, together with a few soldiers, outfought the much larger and better equipped Iraqi forces who were aided by the Germans and Italians. The engagement would prove to be the first real defeat of the Germans in World War Two. This book is based on the research into a wide range of official, academic and public sources. It uses reported American, British, German, Italian and Iraqi dialogue to produce this remarkable account of a thirty day war in Iraq in 1941, how it played out and how it set the scene for Iraq’s turbulent future which has come to haunt the West.

36

Campbell Muirhead kept a meticulous diary of his wartime RAF service from the day that he set forth to train as a pilot in Canada and the USA in 1942 to the end of his wartime service with 12 Squadron Bomber Command. The book is particularly emotive as he wrote in the common parlance of those wartime days and truly reflects the emotions, fears and feelings of those caught up in that mighty conflict. His diligent observations of life in the RAF from joining-up, crossing the Atlantic and training in the New World bring back wartime life as it really was. His descriptions of the perils of flying on bombing raids deep into the heart of Germany truly reflect the many different aspects of life in a front-line squadron in a way that can only be told by one who was there.

THE RAF’S DISASTROUS RAID OF 19/20 FEBRUARY 1944 Alan Cooper Seventy-nine heavy bombers failed to return from the catastrophic raid on the industrial city of Leipzig on the night of 19/29 February 1944. Some 420 aircrew were killed and a further 131 became prisoners of war. It was at that time by far the RAF’s most costly raid of World War II. This book analyses what went wrong. From the outset poor navigational and meteorological briefings had hindered the bombers attempts to locate the target and confusion reigned.

SAILING INTO THE PAST

SHIP MODELS FROM KITS ADMIRAL BYNG

Editor Jenny Bennett

Dr David Griffith

Chris Ware

Until recently, there was little practical knowledge of the ships of the distant past. We could only surmise as to the manner in which a Viking ship sailed or how fast a Greek trireme could be rowed. The building of accurate replicas over the past generation has changed all that, and what has been learnt about the ships and boats of our ancestors has radically changed our perceptions of sailing and voyaging. This beautifully-illustrated new book charts those discoveries. A fascinating work which offers the most accessible view yet as to how the ships of our seafaring forebears affected the manner in which they traded, fought and explored.

New techniques in injection moulding and resin casting have transformed the humble kit which and resulted in a new form of the hobby, mid-way between traditional build-from-the-box and the time-consuming demands of fabricating everything from scratch. The innovative techniques now required are comprehensively demonstrated in this new manual which is written for those wishing to achieve the best results in the 1:700 to 1:350 range of scales, and its step-by-step approach takes the reader through the complete building of two models, one plastic and one resin.Written by an award-winning ship modeller, it is a showcase for the modern approach to the hobby.

Born the son of Admiral George Byng, John Byng seemed destined for a shining career in the Navy. He saw his first fleet action as a Captain's Servant, aged just 14, was Post Captain at 23 and by the outbreak of the Seven Years' War had risen to Admiral of the Blue. But then his failure at the Battle of Minorca (20 May 1756) earned him accusations of cowardice. His trial and execution were the hottest topic of the day and his reputation has never recovered. Chris Ware reassesses Byng's whole career, untangling the politics surrounding his trial to see if his poor reputation is justified.

HITLER’S NAVY Jak Mallmann Showell This important reference book is an indispensable guide to the ships, organisation, command and rank structure, and leaders of the Kriegsmarine, and helps explain why it was such a potent force. A detailed text, augmented by photos, maps and diagrams, studies the German Navy from the Treaty of Versailles to the collapse of the U-boat offensive and the demise of the Third Reich. This magnificent work is based on the author’s 1979 title The German Navy in World War Two but the illustrations have been extensively revised. A classic work of reference for a new generation of readers.

THE GERMAN INVASION OF NORWAY Geirr H Haarr This new book documents the German invasion of Norway, focussing on the events at sea. More than most other campaigns of WWII, Operation Weserübung has been shrouded in mystery, legend and flawed knowledge. Strategic, political and legal issues were at best unclear, while military issues were dominated by risk; the German success was the result of improvisation and the application of available forces far beyond the comprehension of British and Norwegian military and civilian authorities

NEW

BLACK FLAG Lawrence Paterson On the eve of Germany's surrender in May 1945, Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz commanded thousands of loyal and active men of the U-boat service. Still fully armed and unbroken in morale, enclaves of these men occupied bases stretching from Norway to France, where cadres of U-boat men fought on in ports that defied besieging Allied troops to the last. At sea U-boats still operated on a war footing around Britain, the coasts of the United States and as far as Malaya. One of the last but most dramatic acts of the naval war, the story of how the surrender was handled has never been treated at length before. This book uncovers much new material about the process itself and the ruthless aftermath for both the crews and their boats.

SNIPER ACE

FROM THE EASTERN FRONT TO SIBERIA Bruno Sutkus Throughout World War II, German snipers were obliged to carry a ’Scharfshützen Buch’ which recorded every kill. Each success noted had to be verified by a witness and signed by a superior officer. The journal of Sutkus is one of the only such books to have survived the war. It records more than 200 kills, placing him as one of the war’s most successful snipers. A large part of his journal is reproduced for the first time here, providing a unique, up close and personal account of sniping on the Eastern Front.

BATTLEFIELD SNIPER

ASSAULT ON GERMANY

Lt. Col. Tom C. McKenney

THE BATTLE FOR GEILENKIRCHEN

Jack Hinson never planned to become a deadly sniper. A prosperous and influential Kentucky plantation owner in the 1850s, Hinson was devoted to raising his growing family and working his land. Yet by 1865, Hinson had likely killed more than one hundred men and had single-handedly taken down an armed Union transport in his one-man war against Grant's army and navy. By the end of the American Civil War, the Union had committed infantry and cavalry from nine regiments and a specially equipped amphibious task force of marines to capture Hinson. They never caught him. This is a unique sniper story previously untold.

Ken Ford The Anglo-American battle for the Geilenkirchen salient in November 1944 was infantry warfare at its worst, and it is described in vivid detail in this new edition of Ken Ford’s classic study. The onset of winter saw the Allied advance from the Normandy beaches forced to a halt on Germany’s doorstep. The clock had been put back to the days of the Great War – the Allies had arrived at the Siegfried Line and were forced to attack the fortifications from the hell of the trenches.

STAND BY FOR ACTION

THE WHEEZERS & DODGERS

COCKLESHELL COMMANDO

THE WAR OF THE GUN BOATS

William Donald

Gerald Pawle

Bill Sparks

Bryan Cooper

This record of varied and almost incessant action ranks among the most thrilling personal accounts of the war at sea. In Norway in 1940, as second-in-command of a Black Swan class sloop, the author experienced the nervous strain of operating in a narrow fjord under heavy air attack. His next task – in command first of a corvette and then a destroyer – was escorting East Coast convoys against the menaces of E-boats, enemy aircraft and mines; he later took part in the landings at Anzio and the Normandy landings in 1944. An unputdownable memoir.

This is the fascinating story of the Admiralty’s Department of Miscellaneous Weapon Development, the so-called ‘Wheezers and Dodgers’, and the ingenious weapons and devices it invented or perfected. The development of these inventions, the triumphs and disasters, is told with panache and humour, while imaginative and eccentric figures emerge from every page.

One of only two survivors of the famous Cockleshell Hero raid, Bill Sparks' war and post-war career has never before been told in full. In this gripping book, he describes not only his part in Operation FRANKTON, the daring Gironde raid, and his escape back to Britain, but how he fought with the Greek Sacred Squadron thereafter. Operating in small groups they raided and liberated islands in the Aegean Sea. Always something of a military maverick, Bill's memoir is truly action-packed.

During the Second World War large numbers of small fighting boats fought in coastal waters all over the world, be they German Schnellboote, Royal Naval MTBs and MGBs or American PT boats. These 'little ships' developed a special kind of naval warfare and acquired the buccaneering spirit of an earlier age with the close hand-to-hand battles. Bryan Cooper's book traces the history and development of these craft from their first limited use in the First World War and, in so doing, he captures the drama of this highly individual form of combat.

COUNTDOWN TO VALKYRIE

ESCAPE FROM THE THIRD REICH

THE VENLO INCIDENT

Nigel Jones

Sune Persson The Swedish Red Cross expedition to the German concentration camps in March–April 1945 was the largest rescue effort inside Germany during WWII. Sponsored by the Swedish Government and led by Count Bernadotte of Wisborg, the mission became known for its distinctive buses. Each bus was purposefully painted entirely white except for the Red Cross emblem on the side so that they would not be mistaken for military targets. This is the first book to tell the full story of this remarkable and hazardous operation. The first English edition of a Swedish-language work, this book includes new material from the PRO and photographs of the bus journeys which have never been published anywhere before.

In November 1939, the Nazis used the so-called Venlo Incident as a pretext for invading the Netherlands. Following orders from Himmler, two British intelligence officers, Sigismund Payne Best and Richard Stevens, were captured from the Café Backus in the town of Venlo. Best had been trying to contact German officers plotting against Hitler. When Best met the three agents – including Walter Schellenberg – he was carrying with him a list of British agents who were working in Europe. When he arrived at the café, which was just over the Dutch border, he realised he had walked into a trap. Hitler used the incident – together with the Elser bomb plot – as an excuse for war with the Netherlands. As Nigel Jones explains, the incident was crucial in making the British suspicious of dealings with anti-Hitler resistance.

‘A thrilling account of the incredible assassination conspiracy' Military Illustrated On 20 July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg flew to meet Hitler at a military conference, held at the Wolf’s Lair headquarters in East Prussia. He carried with him a briefcase containing two bombs. If he had been able to detonate both bombs the Führer would have died and the war would have ended. The complete story of this plot, and other attempts on Hitler, are detailed in depth by the award-winning writer and journalist Nigel Jones. His ground-breaking account takes in new material from conspirators’ relatives and the book includes an Afterword by Berthold Stauffenberg – the son of the would-be assassin.

THE GERMAN 88

HITLER’S ROCKETS

THE MOST FAMOUS GUN OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR

Norman Longmate

Terry Gander The German 88 mm guns became the most famous and feared artillery pieces of the Second World War. They appeared in a whole series of forms ranging from anti-aircraft to anti-tank and tank-guns, including several self-propelled platforms. Although primarily anti-aircraft guns they gained an awesome reputation as anti-tank weapons, a reputation that remains to this day. Terry Gander, in this in-depth, highly illustrated study, tells the story of the 88.

42

On 8 September 1944, the first V-2 rocket – the forerunner of the ballistic missile – landed in Chiswick. Between then and 27 March 1945, more than a thousand landed on British soil, killing nearly 3000 people and seriously injuring thousands more. Arriving at supersonic speed, without warning, they did enormous damage and had a serious effect on morale. Using contemporary documents and protagonists' accounts Longmate tells the story of this remarkable weapon, revealing the lengths the Luftwaffe went to in producing them, the damage they caused and the enduring legacy of the rocket technology

THE FLATPACK BOMBERS THE ROYAL NAVY AND THE ZEPPELIN MENACE Ian Gardiner The Zeppelin threat spurred the British government into creating the Royal Flying Corps, and it was this ‘menace’which led Winston Churchill and the Royal Navy to bombing these airships on the ground. Thus in 1914, the Royal Naval Air Service pioneered strategic bombing. Moreover, through its efforts to extend its striking range in order to destroy Zeppelins in their home bases, the Royal Navy developed the first true aircraft carriers. This gripping book, written by the author of In the Service of the Sultan, is the story of those largely forgotten early bombing raids.

FAMOUS FACES OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

BARE FEET AND BANDOLIERS

Steve Hurst This book tells the tragic story of the largely neglected Spanish Civil War through the eyes of writers, artists and musicians involved. The author describes the roles of figures such as Arthur Koestler, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, George Orwell, Esmond Romilly, Martha Gellhorn (Hemingway’s lover), Salvador Dali and the spies Kim Philby and Anthony Blunt. It follows the war from the rebellion of summer 1936, through Seville, the Aragon Mountains, Madrid, Malaga, the arrival of the International Brigades in 1937, the destruction of Guernika by the Condor Legion, and Barcelona and Franco’s victorious march.

WINGATE, SANDFORD, THE PATRIOTS AND THE LIBERATION OF ETHIOPIA David Shirreff In 1941 Colonel Orde Wingate with his Gideon Force of British Commonwealth troops and local Patriots, who had resisted the Italian occupation, advanced into Italian-occupied Ethiopia to restore Emperor Haile Selaisse to his throne. David Shireff, who was there, gives an evocative and impressive account of how Wingate, through bold and imaginative command, defeated the larger Italian forces. Shirreff also explores the role of Brigadier Daniel Sandford, now an almost forgotten commander, in organizing his Mission 101, the sustained rebellion of the Patriots. A splendid and unusual memoir. 43

MALTA GC Jon Sutherland and Diane Canwell The Siege of Malta during World War II was one of the greatest dramas of the conflict. Bereft of vital defending aircraft, guns and ammunition this small island endured a succession of air raids from the Italian and German air forces. Valetta was virtually destroyed, the inhabitants took to living in the hills and caves as their houses lay in ruins. Food was scarce and the islands only salvation and survival depended on the arrival of the Allied convoys which themselves were constantly under attack as they dodged their way across hostile Mediterranean seas. This book contains unseen photographs taken during the siege and dramatically shows what life was like for the population and the troops and pilots who so valiantly defended Malta

DUXFORD AND THE BIG WINGS 1940 - 45

ALONE I FLY

Martin W. Bowman This is a pulsating account of the young RAF and American fighter boys who flew Spitfires, Hurricanes, Thunderbolts and Mustangs during 1940-45. It is unique in that the story is told using first person accounts from RAF, German and American ‘Eagles’ who fought in the skies over England in the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940 and the great air offensives over occupiedEurope from 1942 onwards A host of incredible first-hand accounts by British, Polish, Czech, German and American fighter pilots permeate the action and describe the aerial battles as only they can. This unique book also includes many accounts and photos that have not previously been seen before.

After several years at sea, Sgt Bill Bailey arrived in Cairo in 1942 as a new recruit to the RAF, hoping to fulfill his ambition to fly bombers. Within hours of his arrival he is sent on his first bombing mission as second pilot in a 104 Squadron Wellington. The aircraft was hit by enemy gunfire and suffered continual loss of altitude as it struggled to return to base. In thick cloud over a vast expanse of barren desert the aircraft hit a rock outcrop and disintegrated. Bill came too lying alone on a precipitous ledge and soon realized that he was the sole survivor. If he was to live he had to find help. To walk in temperatures of over 100 degrees proved impossible, so he trudged over seemingly endless dunes at dusk and dawn, his energy gradually fading. This story of one man’s struggle to survive is an inspiring story.

CAPTAIN COOK’S WAR AND PEACE

THE FOUR DAYS’ BATTLE OF 1666

THE AGE OF THE SHIP OF THE LINE

John Robson

Frank L Fox

Why was James Cook chosen to lead the Endeavour expedition to the Pacific in 1768? As this new book shows, by that date he had become supremely and uniquely qualified for the exacting tasks of exploration. This was a period when who you were and who you knew counted for more than ability, but Cook, through his own skills and application, rose up through the ranks of the Navy to become a remarkable seaman to whom men of influence took notice; Generals such as Wolfe and politicians like Lord Egmont took his advice and recognised his qualities. Highly readable and displaying much new research, this is an important new book for Cook scholars and armchair explorers alike

On 1 June 1666 a large but outnumbered English fleet engaged the Dutch off the mouth of the Thames in a colossal battle that was to involve nearly 200 ships and last four days. False intelligence had led the English to divide their fleet to meet a phantom threat from France and although the errant squadron rejoined on the final day of the battle, it was not enough to redress the balance. Like many a defeat, it sparked controversy at the time, and has been the subject of speculation and debate ever since. It makes for a thoroughly engrossing story, and one worthy of the greatest battle of the age of sail.

Jonathan R Dull This new book, by the distinguished historian Jonathan Dull, looks inside the workings of both the Royal and the French navies of this tumultuous era, and compares the key elements of the rival fleets. Through this balanced comparison, Dull argues that Great Britain’s final triumph in a series of wars with France was primarily the result of superior financial and economic power. This accessible and highly readable account navigates the intricacies of the British and French wars in a way which will both enlighten the scholar and fascinate the general reader.

LIGHTNING UP Alan White Alan White had an exciting and successful RAF career and his love of flying shines through this account of his experiences over the years 1953 to 1987, roughly the period of the Cold War. He pulls no punches and records faithfully his failures as well as his achievements. His account is full of interesting flying detail and of the internal workings of the RAF during those Cold War years.

A TRENCHARD BRAT AT WAR Thomas Lancashire & Stuart Burbridge Thomas Lancashire joined the RAF in 1936 and became one of the famous ‘Trenchard Brats’ at RAF Halton. He was first posted to 7 Squadron in 1939, flying Whitley bombers but decided to advance himself to become a flight engineer on the new Stirling heavy bomber. He was posted to 15 Squadron at Wyton and completed a full tour. He later joined 97 Squadron flying Lancasters. On his ninth raid of this tour his aircraft was attacked by a night fighter over Belgium but he successfully baled out and was eventually picked up by the Resistance and handed to an escape line. Eventually the group of evaders was betrayed by a German agent and placed in captivity, ending up in Stalag Luft IV at Mühlberg.

TIGER CUB A 74 SQUADRON FIGHTER PILOT IN WWII Christopher Yeoman and John Freeborn Acting Pilot Officer John Freeborn was posted from Flying Training School to join the already much-acclaimed 74 ‘Tiger’ Squadron at eighteen years of age. ‘A’ Flight’s Commander was a well built, handsome South African man named Adolf ‘Sailor’ Malan. John flew many operations with 74 Squadron in Spitfires during the early years of the war and The Battle of Britain; he was awarded the DFC for his efforts. On 17 February 1941, John Freeborn learnt that he had been awarded a bar to his DFC. At that time he had destroyed twelve enemy aircraft and damaged many more.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTABLES Tracy Martin Foreword by Christopher Biggins Christmas collectables are bought all year-round by dedicated collectors. There is a huge following for Father Christmas collectables whether it’s snow globes or cake ornaments and the book is divided into chapters to reflect the wide array of goods available. OLD-FASHIONED REMEDIES: FROM ARSENIC TO GIN Dr Rob Hicks Dr Rob Hicks is instantly recognisable from his TV and radio shows and raids the kitchen and bathroom to show old-fashioned but effective ways to get better and stay healthy. In an age when many of us are looking for more natural remedies, Rob explores two angles – what do you need to fight particular illnesses such as arthritis or bad breath and what do kitchen staples (e.g. garlic) help to beat. He also looks at past disastrous cures, including mercury for whitening the skin and teeth and belladonna for ‘curing’ fevers. A fascinating book which will appeal to those who want to know more about what they’re eating and its benefits, or want to fight illness naturally.

ENGLISH ECCENTRICS AND THEIR BIZARRE BEHAVIOUR

THE PRIVATE DIARIES OF THE HISTORY OF TEA Claire Hopley ALISON UTTLEY

David Long

Alison Uttley is the author of children’s classics such as Little Grey Rabbit and Sam Pig, as well as her country books for adults, but her private diaries from 1932-71 reveal a darker side to the famous storyteller. Alison’s self-obsession and delusion mingle with beautiful descriptions of the world around her. The diaries reveal her relationship with her main illustrator, Margaret Tempest whom she detested whilst she abhorred Enid Blyton, whom she called a ‘vulgar, curled woman’. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in Alison Uttley, her writings and the complexities of her often tragic life. ‘The diaries chart Alison’s rise as a best-selling author and are fascinating’. Manchester Evening News.

A fascinating insight into eccentrics from the socially inept to the plain bizarre, including the philosopher Jeremy Bentham who thought that every man could become a statue of himself after death – far more interesting than ancestral portraits. Author David Long has delved into the darkest corners of English history to introduce many new cases of strange behaviour which will have you laughing out loud, with sections including builders, hoarders and foodies. Some of their architectural legacies suggest that being eccentric isn’t always a folly! Full of quirky information and a section on loony laws, this is a great read and present.

Denis Judd

Whether used for flirtation or a reason to bring key characters together, this delightful book explores our relationship with tea through fiction, including the works of Jane Austen and J.K. Rowling. Divided into chapters to include a brief tea history, romantic teas and tea parties (from the infamous Boston Tea Party to the bizarre Madhatter’s Tea Party), Claire Hopley takes us on a walk through the long, dark teatime – of literature. The recipes recreate dishes based on those in some of our favourite books.

JACK THE RIPPER: QUEST FOR A KILLER

DNA CRIME INVESTIGATIONS

BRITAIN’S MOST NOTORIOUS HANGMEN

M J Trow

Stephen Wade

Stephen Wade

For a hundred and twenty years, the identity of the Whitechapel murderer known to us as Jack the Ripper has both eluded us and spawned a veritable industry of speculation. This book names him. Mad doctors, Russian lunatics, bungling midwives, railway policemen, failed barristers, weird artists, royal princes and whiteeyed men. All of these and more have been put in the frame for the Whitechapel murders. Where ingenious invention and conspiracy theories have failed, common sense has floated out of the window. M.J. Trow, in this gripping historical reinvestigation, cuts through the fog of speculation, fantasy and obsession that has concealed the identity of the most famous serial murderer of all time.

When Professor Alex Jeffreys worked with Leicestershire police on the Colin Pitchfork case in 1986, a revolution started in the application of forensic expertise. Since then there have been several major cases in which long-standing murders and rapes have been revisited by teams of ‘Cold Case’ detectives. With new DNA sampling in their armoury, officers throughout the land are having successes when reinvestigating serious crimes. Cold cases are hot again. Stephen Wade has gathered together most of the highprofile cases of recent years - and several obscure ones - examining the nature of the crimes, the investigation highs and lows, and the triumphs of new forensic work.

Britain’s Most Notorious Hangmen tells the stories of the men who worked with their deadly skills at Tyburn tree or at the scaffolds in the prison yards across the country. Most were steeled to do the work by drink, and many suffered deeply from their despised profession. Here the reader will find the tale of the real Jack Ketch, the cases of neck-stretchers from the drunks like Curry and Askern, to the local workers of the ropes, Throttler Smith and the celebrated Billington and Pierrepoint dynasty. Along with some of the stories of famous killers are the bunglings, failures and desperate lives of the notorious hangmen.

MISCARRIAGES OF JUSTICE John J. Eddleston To face a trial for murder must be a terrifying prospect, all the more so when you know that you are innocent of the charge. How much more horrific must it be then, when you know that should you be found guilty, the sentence must be that you will lose your life at the end of a rope? All of the cases reviewed in this book involved one or more individuals who were put on trial for taking the life of a fellow human being.

UNSOLVED LONDON MURDERS: THE 1940s AND 1950s

UNSOLVED LONDON MURDERS: THE 1920s AND 1930s

Jonathan Oates

Jonathan Oates

Among the shocking cases of violent death Jonathan Oates reconstructs in this, the third volume in his series on unsolved murders in the capital, the killing of 5-year-old Eileen Lockhart, the strangulation of a young woman whose body was found in a bombed house in 1941, the mysterious Cranford Park murder, the assassination of Countess Teresa Lubienska, and the strangulation of Elizabeth Figgs who was possibly the first victim of the Nudes Murderer. Also featured is a re-examination of the notorious case of Timothy Evans, the Welshman who was hung in 1950 for the murder of his infant daughter.

In this companion volume to his bestselling Unsolved Murders of Victorian and Edwardian London, Jonathan Oates has selected over 20 haunting, sometimes shocking cases from the period between the two world wars. Included are the shooting of PC James Kelly in Gunnersbury, violent deaths associated with Fenian Conspiracies, the stabbing of the French acrobat Martial Lechevalier in Piccadilly, and, perhaps most gruesome of all, the case of the unidentified body parts found at Waterloo Station.
